Big week for events at Chronicle EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Gresey Educating the community about the dangers of heroin and other drugs. Forecasting what the local and regional economy will look like in 2015.

Those are two heavy – but important – topics.

And both were the focus of events the Kane County Chronicle was involved with this past week.

First, the Chronicle partnered with the group Chris Walk Against Substance

Abuse to host “Straight Talk About Drugs” at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre on Tuesday.

Second, the Chronicle hosted its first Economic Forecast forum Thursday at the Q Center in St. Charles.

While the subject matters of the two events were markedly different, they share at least one thing in common – both impact the lives of Kane County residents.

And that helps the brand promise of Shaw Media, the company that owns the Chronicle.

The brand promise is made up of three points: to provide relevant informa-

tion and marketing solutions, and to be community advocates.

When the Chronicle hosted an anti-bullying forum at Kaneland High School in 2012 with its sister paper, the Daily Chronicle in DeKalb, and the Kaneland School District, it also was seeking to fulfill that brand promise.

We received positive feedback regarding that event. And – as illustrated by this past week – we’re looking to host more events in the future.

LOCAL BRIEFS Arcadia Trading Inc. recalls Red Thread Fish The Kane County Health Department is advising residents that Arcadia Trading Inc. of Brooklyn, New York, is recalling all packages of Red Thread Fish because the fish have not had their entrails removed, described as uneviscerated.

The product comes in a 7-ounce, heat-sealed plastic bag, states a news release from the health department.

No illnesses have been immediately reported in connection with the problem, states the release, but the recalled Red Thread Fish was distributed nationwide in supermarkets.

Uneviscerated fish have been linked to outbreaks of botulism poisoning.

Masters of efficiency, red foxes and coyotes walk in direct register, meaning they place their hind feet directly on top of the prints left by their front feet. This trait means their tracks typically proceed in a straight line. In this photo, taken as a light snow was falling, the tracks themselves are indistinct but the straight trail the animal left, combined with a stride length of 20 inches, is diagnostic. These tracks were made by a coyote.

Tracking books will tell you that fox tracks are smaller than coyote, and that both coyote and fox prints are oval in shape while dog prints are more round. (Cat tracks tend to be round too but, as you’ll see in a future column, are a different animal altogether.

No pun intended.)

If you’re more of a facts and figures person, you can use these measurements for

reference: • Red fox: 1½ to 2¾ inches long, and 1¼ to 2 inches wide; stride length of 13 to 18 inches.

• Coyote: 2½ to 3½ inches long and 1½ to 3 inches wide; stride length of 17½ to 26 inches.

• Dog: Less than 1 to greater than 4 inches long and less than 1 to greater than 4 inches wide, or basically all

Unlike their wild relatives, our pet dogs have been conditioned to expect a bowlful of kibbles at the end of their day. Efficiency of movement and energy conservation are the last things on their minds.

As we learned last week though, tracks aren’t the only signs animals leave behind.

As you study your mystery prints, be sure to check for other evidence too: Scat – Thanks to a digestive system meant to wring every last nutrient from a meal, fox and coyote scat has a decidedly twisted look.

Contents this time of year tend to be mostly fur and bones. (This feature will vary throughout the year, with berry seeds being the most obvious component in summer, and apple and plum skins in fall.) But most distinctive, to my eye anyway, is the “flourish” at the end of each deposit. Reminds me, every time, of the swirl on a serving of soft-serve ice cream.

over the board; stride length varies widely, as well.

The trouble is, some foxes are quite large, and some coyotes can be quite small, leading to quite a bit of overlap. So, what I tend to rely on more than measurements is context. That is, where are these tracks you’re working so hard to decipher?

Are you in a natural area that has several hundred acres of open space? Chances are, you’re looking at either coyote or dog.

Are you in a neighborhood that has houses with porches, decks and/or sheds built up a foot or so off the ground?

Probably either a fox or a dog.

I’ll admit, at this point these answers are really still just guesses. Unless you can see the actual animal that’s making the tracks, you’ll need to ask a few more questions: Do the tracks go in a straight line? If so, then your options are either coyote or fox.

Are the tracks just all over the place, with no rhyme or reason? Yes? Then you can be pretty sure you’re looking at

Years ago – and I’m talking 40 to 50 – if you encountered dog-like paw prints in the wild in our area, chances were good you’d found just that – the tracks of Canis familiaris, the domestic dog.

At that time, our other most common canine species, Vulpes vulpes, the red fox, was becoming increasingly rare because of an epidemic of sarcoptic mange, and Canis latrans, the coyote, had yet to explode on the scene.

Then, as we moved into the 1980s, things began to change. Coyotes, which had been in Illinois all along, but not in great numbers, started to become more prevalent. To give you an idea of relative numbers: State wildlife management records show that, in the mid-1970s, about 3,000 coyotes were taken, or harvested, annually; by the early 1980s, however, that figure had climbed to 10,000 annually.

Coyotes continued to expand their range throughout the 1990s, while red foxes battled to recover. The mange crisis had passed but much of their territory, especially in rural areas, had been taken over by coyotes.

Nowadays in the Tri-Cities, it seems like these two types of wild canines have come to an uneasy truce, with foxes claiming in-town yards and neighborhood parks as their turf, and coyotes, for now, patrolling toward the outskirts.

All of this is my own very long-winded way of saying that, today, if you notice dog-like tracks in your yard, a park or forest preserve, you can count on the track being made by one of three “suspects:” coyote, fox, or their cousin – and our companion – the domestic dog. The question is, how do you tell the difference?

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – In presenting J. Thomas Von Lunen with the 2014 Batavia Citizen of the Year award Friday, Batavia Public Library Director George Scheetz said Von Lunen is someone who always is willing to lend a hand.

“He is willing to help anyone in any capacity,” said Scheetz, who nominated Von Lunen for the award.

Von Lunen was given the award during the Batavia Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards dinner, “Inspire 2015, A Celebration of Those Who Inspire Us!” Von Lunen, a Batavia Library Board trustee since 2007, humbly accepted the award.

“I’m proud to be part of the community and call Batavia home,” said Von Lunen, who has lived in Batavia since 1979.

Von Lunen said when he moved to Batavia he “wanted to belong to Batavia and actively contribute to the community.”

Von Lunen, 68, has worn many hats in the community. Along with being a library board trustee, he has been a member of the Rotary

in fundraising with the Rotary Club has helped support numerous local projects and initiatives. The list includes the Peg Bond Center pavilion, Bulldogs Unleashed, the Batavia Riverwalk boardwalk and gazebo, Batavia High School’s Interact Club and an annual scholarship

program for graduating seniors at the school.

His activities also have included work with Hesed House in Aurora, bell ringing for The Salvation Army, serving as an usher at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Batavia and volunteering at Lazarus House in St. Charles.

During the event, five Batavia businesses also were honored as 2014 Ole Award winners.

Scat, scent, burrows all key in identifying animal tracks • GOOD NATURED Continued from page 4 To differentiate between fox and coyote scat, I use a “rule of thumb.” If the scat’s circumference is wider than my thumb, it’s probably from a coyote.

Narrower than my thumb, it’s likely from a fox.

Also, because scat is a way of communicating as much as it is a means of relief, coyotes and foxes tend to leave their “marks”

in the center of paths and trailways. By way of contrast, dogs, whose scat is round and has a grainy texture, tend to step off-trail when it’s time to “take a break.”

Scent – When you’re out and about and you think you’re smelling a far-off skunk, think again.

Red foxes will often mark areas with a scent that is remarkably skunk-like in nature.

It’s not as strong though and, to me, somewhat

sweeter than the pungent odor of a ticked-off Mephitis mephitis. (Fun bonus fact: Skunks’ scientific name comes from the Latin Mefitis, a goddess who embodied the noxious gases emitted by swamps and volcanoes.)

Burrows – February is mating season for foxes and coyotes, which means April is when offspring will be born.

Before that time, females of both species will be on the lookout for suitable sites for their natal dens.

Sometimes this quest involves excavating a burrow; sometimes it means taking over one dug by a woodchuck or other type of burrower; and sometimes – for foxes especially – it may involve the space underneath a deck, porch or backyard shed.

These dark, quiet recesses mimic the conditions of underground dens but offer the particular advantage of requiring little or no work on the part of the expectant mother.

These spaces also are very appealing to a number of other local mammals, including raccoons, skunks and opossums – species will be profiled in next week’s Good Natured column.

Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress’ most recent attempt to get more information about the state’s charges against King through a bill of particulars was denied by Hallock on Jan. 23, according to court records.

During the case’s next court date on Feb. 26, Sams and Childress are expected to have a witness list and prepared exhibits for the trial, as well as any written stipulations, according to the status order.

Several people already had been subpoenaed to appear for the trial, including various Geneva Fire Department paramedics, Elk Grove Village police officers and an Illinois State Police forensic scientist, according to court records.

A trial for a 2014 Geneva murder case once again has been postponed, according to court records.

Kane County Judge James Hallock on Thursday granted a motion to continue Shadwick King’s case and begin his jury trial on March 2 instead of Monday, according to a written status order.

This is the second time Shadwick King King’s trial has been rescheduled from its original Dec. 8 start date.

Hallock on Nov. 19 approved a request from Assistant State’s Attorney Greg Sams to move the trial to February.

King, 47, was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen. King is accused of killing his wife by an unspecified means of asphyxia and then placing her body

parking deck to reopen Sunday KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Although work still is needed on the new tier of the Third Street commuter parking deck, the structure’s first two levels are set to reopen Sunday, the city announced Friday in a news release.

The daily fee remains $2.

“We thank our commuters for their patience during the past six months of construction and are pleased to provide them with this additional parking when the third level opens later this spring,” Geneva City Administrator Mary McKittrick stated in the release.

The release indicates the new third tier is substantially complete, but it needs to be sealed, striped and painted once the weather is warmer.

Landscaping will be among other work done then.

The $4.5 million third tier expansion will provide 180 parking spaces, bringing the facility’s total to 540, according to the release. The Metra-funded expansion was done to accommodate parking that will be lost as part of Union Pacific’s future plans to add a third rail line, the release states.

To keep the work on schedule, the Geneva City Council authorized Sunday construction hours during the month of January. The construction contract allowed work on Saturdays.

“We are delighted with the outcome of the project and appreciate Metra’s grant funding for this endeavor,” McKittrick stated in the release.

With the parking deck’s reopening, Pace bus will end its free shuttle from the temporary commuter parking on South Street at the First Baptist Church and the baseball field parking lot near public works, according to the release. The shuttle’s last day of operation is Monday.

David Lee Olson, of Woodinville, WA, passed away quietly on Jan. 25, 2015. He was surrounded by the love of his family and friends.

David was born in LaCrosse, WI, on Sept. 9, 1939, to Don and Eileen Olson. Dave’s family moved to St. Charles, IL, where he would live most of his early life. He was a graduate of St. Charles High School. He served in the U. S. Army 1958-1961, married the former Karon Haack at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Batavia and started his

family.

In 1965 he moved then to Kirkland WA, where he owed and operated Tip Top Tree Service; he loved working outdoors and driving around in his red truck. Dave retired in 1998, he and his wife resettled in Woodinville, and began traveling yearly to Palm Springs.

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, he enjoyed fishing, golfing, coaching, and watching sports, and always had a good joke. He was a friend to everyone, He was survived by his wife of 56 years, Karon; his two children, and grandchildren; and countless friends he meet along the way, he leaves warm memories Think of Dave as living, in the heart of those he loved. Nothing loved is ever lost, and he was loves so much.

Barbara and a group of classmates started a get-together named Clubbies and have rotated homes to visit, play cards and reminisce for the past 68 years. Besides caring for her family and husband at home, she helped her husband operate their appliance repair business for over fifty years.

Vandals target outdoor lights in Campton Hills

The Campton Hills Police Department has fielded several reports in the past month about broken lights at subdivision entrances and on residents’ property.

Most recently, a member of the Hunter’s Hills Homeowners Association reported Jan. 24 that three floodlights were damaged near the subdivision’s monument sign at

Brown Road and Hunter’s Hill Drive, according to a police report.

The lights appeared to have been struck, possibly by a baseball bat or similar object, police reported.

On Jan. 19, someone with the Westwoods Homeowners Association reported that seven of 10 yard security lights had been damaged last week at the subdivision’s entrance at Route 64 and Westwoods Drive, according to a report.

The damage reportedly looked intentional.

Broken lights also were

reported Jan. 2 in the 7N100 block of Ridgeline Road and Dec. 29 in the 40W700 block of Fox Creek Drive.

According to a report, 10 landscaping lights had been ripped out of the ground, and some Christmas lights were pulled out of the trees at the Ridgeline Road residence.

Three of the landscaping lights, with a total value of $150, were reported damaged.

Damage was estimated at $500 at the Fox Creek Drive home, which had two broken outdoor coach lights, according to police.

Task force picks design team to develop Fox River plans

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A task force focused on maximizing the potential of the Fox River has selected a design team to help carry out that goal.

The St. Charles Park Board on Tuesday unanimously approved the Active River Task Force’s selection of a team headed up by Naperville-based Hitchcock Design Group, said Holly Cabel, St. Charles Park District director of parks and recreation, on Friday.

The task force, working through the park district, will negotiate a contract for professional services with the team, Cabel said. The park district, the city of St. Charles, the Kane County Forest Preserve and the St. Charles River Corridor Foundation all are represented on the task force.

The task force is focused on maximizing the Fox River’s potential through recreational activities or other features

that also could bring an economic boost to St. Charles and the surrounding area.

The teams’ ideas include white water courses, floating botanical gardens, wind surfing, art displays and more, John Rabchuk, task force chairman, said.

The design team will be paid using funds contributed by the park district, city and River Corridor Foundation, as well as the $46,250 grant received from the Kane County Riverboat Fund, said Cabel, who also is the foundation’s president.

The Hitchcock Design-led team was one of four teams that made presentations to the task force during the first week of January. Rabchuk said the team’s members previously have worked on other water-based destinations, including the Naperville Riverwalk.

“We’re very pleased with the types of projects they’ve done in the past,” Rabchuk said.

Anderson said police protection takes up 58 percent of the village’s general fund budgets. Trustee Bill Grabarek said police pensions took up about $122,000 of the general fund last year. The discussion of the budget timeline for 2015-16 is on Monday’s committee of the whole agenda, and Grabarek said “now is the time to start talking about it.”

Officials said the village has had such an issue since it reached a population of 5,000.

The village exceeded that figure in the 2010 U.S. Census. In 2012, residents rejected a referendum proposal to create a new property tax levy specifically to fund police pensions. Instead, the village has had to use property tax revenue that goes to cover services, such as street maintenance and salaries, to pay for the pensions.

“Absent a referendum, that’s basically it. … We had a failed referendum in the past. What do we do? Do we privatize? Do we do some sort of cooperative with another municipality? Trustee Dave Gualdoni said it’s vital that village residents show up to Monday’s meeting to learn about the situation.

Gualdoni said he is against disbanding the police department.

He said there should have been previous public discussion about the issue.

“This is a very important thing that the public should be a part of,” Gualdoni said. He said he has talked to residents, and “I haven’t talked to a single person who thought this was a remotely good idea.”

Anderson said the issue “hasn’t been a secret.” He said he called the trustees and told them about investigating the situation “and that’s what I’ve done.” He said “one of the prerequisites is that the coverage would basically remain the same.”

ELBURN – Police coverage in the village could change significantly in the future, as officials seek solutions to pay for the pensions of Elburn’s police officers.

Among the possibilities would be the disbanding of the village’s police department, and Village President Dave Anderson said he has reached out to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office for an initial discussion on the issue. If Elburn were to take that step, the sheriff’s office would provide coverage to the village.

The board meets at 6:45 p.m.

Monday at Elburn Village Hall, 301 E. North St., Elburn. The item is listed on the agenda under the mayor’s discussion points, listed as “discuss police coverage.”

Anderson stressed that no action will be taken at Monday’s meeting, and at this point, he is only “looking for answers and for ideas.”

Taking stock after incident in Geneva A disturbance Tuesday at Delnor Hospital created hours of anxiety and disruptions at the hospital and beyond.

In retrospect, it could have been much worse.

We were mostly encouraged by the way law enforcement and hospital officials handled the tumult created after Campton Hills resident Justin B. Patzer was sought on multiple warrants stemming from an incident with a relative that caused a temporary lockdown at the hospital.

Patzer, 30, eventually was apprehended the same night in Hammond, Indiana, and now faces criminal charges of felony domestic battery, domestic battery and aggravated assault.

A lot of diligence, cooperation and communication went into ensuring a bad situation didn’t spiral into a true disaster.

This was a legitimately frightening situation.

Police rushed to the hospital around 9:35 a.m. after reports of a man running through the hospital brandishing a knife. It’s not much of a reach to envision panic spreading, but those responding seem to have effectively contained the alarm.

Ideally, Patzer would have been caught before leaving the state, but the bottom line is a peaceful resolution was reached. Kudos to all law enforcement agencies involved for making that happen.

We also commend the level of communication throughout the day to the news media and – by extension – the public.

That is an important component of crisis management, too.

While the handling of the incident seemed to generally go well, we hope all involved take stock of how the day played out and determine whether there are improvements to be made in the future. As unpleasant as this episode was, it could serve as a valuable teaching opportunity.

It is not often, thankfully, that such tense scenarios play out in the Tri-Cities. But menacing circumstances can come about anywhere.

Tuesday reminded all of us how important it is to be alert and well prepared.

Through the implementation of new technologies and streamlined operations, wait times at driver-services facilities have been significantly reduced. My job is not done, and we will be rolling out new initiatives that will further improve customer service.

To make the roads safer, we toughened our DUI laws, which are now considered the best in the country. Since 1999, drunk driving fatalities have dropped by 60 percent. But we didn’t stop there.

Nationally, the leading cause of death for teens is traffic crashes.

We revamped the licensing program

for new teen drivers. The result: Teen driving deaths in Illinois have dropped by over 57 percent.

That’s good, but let’s be clear – I’m still not satisfied. One death is one too many.

That’s why I will be reconvening our traffic safety task force to further improve road safety initiatives.

Before closing, I want to remind your readers that I served our country as a paratrooper in the Army’s 101st Airborne Division. We had a saying there: When you jump out of an airplane, you don’t go half way; you go all the way.

That’s the way I live my life. I never quit.

And that’s why I thank the people of Illinois for the opportunity to continue serving them over the next four years.

I am responding to “We’re better than that” in Sound Off, about how we should set an example for our children.

Everything is about the children. I’m a senior citizen. What about the people who robbed in Batavia? What are they learning in high school? Or aren’t they learning? They’re just with their cellphones. As for the children … the parents are responsible for the children. Once they become 19, they’re not responsible anymore. Most of the children, as I see my nephews and nieces, they are into their iPhones and iPads. When they come over, they don’t talk. They’ve got their heads in it and ask what to eat.

That’s it. To me, that’s rude. At the dinner table, put away your iPads and cellphones. You don’t need to keep looking at it like my niece, who is 13 years old. That is ridiculous. Parents, be parents.

But few high school teams consistently put as dangerous a quintet on the floor as the St. Charles East boys basketball team does, and Batavia became the latest opponent Friday to lack the necessary defensive answers.

The Saints scorched the nets again for an 81-72, Upstate Eight Conference River win.

“You’re forced to guard five and do it well every possession,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said of facing East.

East coach Pat Woods said the Saints (17-2, 9-1 UEC River) have encountered a variety of defensive gameplans this season, but his team’s quality shooting, ball movement and uncommon depth have carved up opponents’ best-laid plans.

“They’re successful sometimes at getting one or two people out of the game,” Woods said. “Like [Batavia] did a great job on Jake Asquini tonight, but we had [Mick Vyzral] step up, Jack (Bronec) played great and Cole (Gentry) played well. It’s hard … to close down five guys. And it’s tough to play zone against a team that shoots it well.

We’re preparing for a lot of different looks in practice just in case something happens, but I wouldn’t want to guard us, let’s just put it that way.”

“It really gives our guys who can attack the rim a great chance because they can’t really help off our shooters,” Clodi said. “So guys like Cole and Jeremy (Champine), it gives them a lot of space to work with, and once they get by their guys, [defenders] are forced to help, and then you’ve got guys who are

shooting in the corners that are wide open and can knock them down.”

Batavia (13-11, 3-7 UEC River) fared well enough offensively but couldn’t string together enough stops to gain serious traction. The Bulldogs’ defensive woes surfaced from the get-go as East zoomed to a 10-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

“I don’t understand how we can beat a great team if we’re going to chase 10 in a blink,” Nazos said.

Bronec, a senior post player, set the tone for the Saints by muscling up for 10 of his 14 points in the opening quarter, when he also grabbed five rebounds.

“He was awesome,” Woods said.

“Jack had a great game tonight. That’s exactly what we need from him going forward.”

Gentry scored 20 points to fuel the uptempo Saints while Vyzral included a trio of 3-pointers among his 15 points.

Batavia senior forward Chasen Peez led all scorers with 21 while point guard Kamontez Thomas scored 12 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter as the visitors forced Woods to re-insert Gentry with less than a minute to go to stabilize the game. Bulldogs junior guard Canaan Coffey was 9 for 9 from the foul line and scored 11 points.

The Bulldogs trailed, 41-29, at halftime and never were in strong position, but Nazos – noting Batavia could face East again at the IHSA Class 4A Geneva Regional – took solace in a more competitive showing than when East blasted Batavia, 76-57, in December.

“We were better here today than last time we played them,” Nazos said.

“If we play them again, let’s make the same stride and let’s see where we’re at.”

Both teams return to action today as the Bulldogs face another formidable foe, West Aurora, in the nightcap of the Bulldogs’ annual Night of Hoops while East plays Naperville North in a 2 p.m. matchup to be contested at Geneva.

Cougars, D’backs bond ‘a turn of fortune’

kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Arizona Diamondbacks farm director Mike Bell and special assistant to the general manager Bob Gebhard dined at the Country House after their first visit with Cougars brass at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in September.

Time permitting, they plan another outing there this weekend.

The dealings between the Cougars and their new player-development contract partners have been substantial over the past four months, but doesn’t it say a mouthful that D’backs officials already relish the club’s favorite nearby haunt?

“Something that turned out to be something of uncertainty and concern turned out to be just a turn of fortune,” Bell said.

With respect to the restaurant’s ostrich burger, he was referring to Arizona’s budding relationship with the Cougars after 17 seasons in South Bend.

On Friday, that bond developed before fans’ eyes as the Cougars hosted a “Meet the Diamondbacks” banquet that included a question-and-answer session with Bell, Gebhard and first-time manager Mark Grudzielanek, a longtime Major League infielder.

Fans who recall Grudzielanek’s days as the Cubs’ gritty second baseman from 2003 to 2004 should appreciate his equally blue-collar approach to managing. The Cougars will open their 25th season in Geneva against visiting Cedar Rapids on April 9, but bring on that bus trip to Burlington, Iowa, three days later and the rest to follow.

“I look forward to that,” Grudzielanek, 44, said. “You’ve got to start out wherever you’re going to start out at. And I’m not the one that’s going to say, ‘Hey, I deserve this or that.’ I’m going to earn everything that’s going to happen.”

“I will tell you, when those fans walk in this stadium, they’re going to be blown away with the changes. And we couldn’t be more proud than to have that happen with the Diamondbacks, because we’re planning on spending the

next 25 years with them. This is not a short-term date; this is a long-term relationship, and we’re going to do it right.”

Arizona is coming off a lengthy PDC marriage with South Bend, which since has partnered with the Cubs, the Cougars’ parent club for the past two seasons.

Just a few days removed from cruising to the 2014 Midwest League title, the Cougars found themselves searching for a new suitor.

Bell admitted he and Gebhard went in cold to the early phases of the courting process, but a bond between the D’backs, Froehlich and Cougars general manager Curtis Haug developed quickly.

The D’backs presented the Cougars with a pitch book in late September, and the response still resonates with Bell.

“The way the email was written, you almost started to recognize the connection right away,” he said.

Nate Navigato said the Vikings refused to let up offensively and that mindset doesn’t change, regardless of the score.

“We just have to keep it on, keep going,” Navigato said.

“Even if we’re up by 20 or 30 we have to keep it going. In tougher games we’re never go-

ing to let up then, so we can’t let up now.”

Navigato led the Vikings with 13 points, while Loudon Vollbrecht added nine.

Guard Jordan Vedder added 11 points off the bench, taking full advantage of his playing time in the fourth quarter.

“It’s a big opportunity,” Vedder said. “Big opportunity. I was not expecting to come out so hot. I was feeling good, wanted to do what I could.”

The 10-game winning streak was far from Ralston’s thoughts. The extra rest for

the starters could be beneficial for the Vikings with the UECDVC “Challenge” matchup this evening.

“I’m not worried about 10 in a row, I’m not worried about 19-2,” Ralston said. “I’m worried about our next game.

That’s what we worry about.

We take it one game at a time and focus on that. Right now our focus is on trying to get ready for Glenbard North and our preparation for that.”

The Vikings will take on Glenbard North at 6 p.m. tonight before resting until a big matchup with St. Charles East on Thursday.

“It’s going to be a good game,” Navigato said. “We have to come out focused tomorrow and get a win. Then we’ve got (St. Charles) East next week, and that’s going to decide conference, so it’s going to be a great week and we’ve got to get ready for that.”

WEST CHICAGO – Bolstered by a strong defensive performance throughout, the Geneva boys basketball team cruised past West Chicago on Friday night for its 10th straight win.

Geneva (19-2, 8-1 UEC River) was able to rest its starters for the entire fourth quarter by virtue of a 23-point lead after three, allowing the bench to close it out in the Vikings’ 63-36 win.

“It was nice to be able to get the bench in,” Vikings coach Phil Ralston said. “A, it’s good for morale, and B, we’re able to rest some players and get them ready for our game tomorrow night (against Glenbard North). If we take care of our business, we want to make sure everyone gets rewarded with some play, and we’ve

been able to do that several times this year.”

West Chicago (5-13, 3-7 UEC River) struggled to get open looks in the paint, where Geneva’s interior defense continued to benefit from a major height advantage and forced the Wildcats to look outside for baskets.

Geneva’s suffocating defense earned it a 29-10 lead at the half after giving up just two points in the opening quarter.

Ralston singled out the defensive pressure caused by Geneva’s various defensive sets as chief among his team’s successes on the night.

“I thought the pressure we put on them, even their shots that normally would be open shots, there was so much pressure leading up to that that they were rushing the shot,” Ralston said.

Knights boys roll to 17-point victory after girls team edged by 1

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland basketball teams split their Northern Illinois Big 12 East doubleheader with Morris on Friday.

While there was little doubt about the outcome of the boys game, which the Knights won 59-42, the girls contest wasn’t decided until the final buzzer, a 44-43 Knights loss.

Ryan David’s first basket of the night, a 3-pointer from the right wing two minutes into the contest, gave the boys squad its first lead at 3-2, and the Knights surged from there.

Kaneland (9-9, 4-3 NI Big 12 East) led, 12-5, after the first eight minutes and 21-16 at halftime.

The Knights pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Redskins (14-7, 5-4), 22-8, to

take a 43-24 lead into the final quarter.

Dominating the boards and containing Austin Patterson, Morris’ top scorer, were the keys to Kaneland’s victory.

The Knights outrebounded the Redskins, 34-17, and held the senior guard to five points.

“Give a lot of credit to Tanner Robertsen and Mitchell Groen,” Kaneland coach Brian Johnson said. “[Patterson] is a phenomenal shooter, and they played excellent defense on him. They followed him the whole game.”

Johnson called the win, which put his squad at .500 for the first time this season, “definitely a total team effort.”

said. “He just kept hitting the boards and made some nice shots as his best game by far of his high school career.”

David led all scorers with 21 points, and Vaca scored 17 points, all in the second half.

Douglas scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds.

“The first half, I started off slow,” Vaca said. “I decided to pick it up. In the third quarter, I tried to be more aggressive going to the rim.”

The Knights trailed, 14-4, after the first quarter. The Knights narrowed the deficit to 25-19 at halftime.

Kaneland took its first lead, 32-30, with 5 seconds left in the third quarter on a Camri Conley trey from the top of the key.

The Knights held the lead until a Jessica Ponce (12 points) layup with a minute left to play, making the score

41-40. Morris widened its lead to 44-40 on a three-point play

With 30 seconds left, Kaneland freshman Jenni Weber (11 points) swished a 3-pointer from the left wing that put Kaneland behind by one.

After the basket, the Knights (13-8, 3-6) forced the Redskins (16-7, 7-3) into a turnover with 20 seconds to go. But Kaneland failed to get a shot off in the final seconds.

Turnovers were the difference, Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said.

The Knights committed 25 to Morris’ 10.

“Turnovers killed us tonight,” Colombe said. “If you have 15 less shots in a one-point game, there is the game.”

Kaneland post player Bailey Crimmins led all scorers with 15 points.

The North Stars’ five forfeits told the story for the home squad as much as the lopsided score on the scoreboard.

“We’ve got injuries and we’ve got holes,” North coach Ben Hummel said. “There are not a lot of good things to say about tonight.”

Hummel felt one bright spot was the performance of Noverini, who won at 132.

More than any opponents, Hummel is battling a numbers game right now.

“We just don’t get enough kids who go out for the team,” the second-year coach said.

Hummel looks at St. Charles East as a role model.

“That is the kind of team that I would like us to grow into,” Hummel said. “If we keep working and getting better and get more numbers, I think we can get there.”

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE O’FALLON – Given its whereabouts this weekend – the IHSA state meet at St. Clair Bowl – the St. Charles East boys bowling team is habitually within striking distance.

After a solid day at Friday’s preliminaries, however, the Saints are in sound position for a potential trophy, to boot.

East rolled a 6,213 over six games and ranks eighth among the 12 teams that made the finals cut. That’s 275 pins behind leader Machesney Park Harlem and 141 off the pace of third-place Stevenson.

Dom Strauss (1,357) paced East, while brothers Dean Mudlong (1,288) and Aaron Mudlong (1,281) were next.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East wrestling team appears to be peaking at just the right time.

Fresh off its fourth Upstate Eight Conference tournament title, East was brimming with confidence heading into Friday night’s dual meet against St. Charles North. Five pins and five forfeits did nothing to dent that confidence, as the Saints easily topped the North Stars, 68-8.

“We came ready,” Saints coach Jason Potter said. “We did what we had to do. It will be interesting to see what we can do at regionals if we put the work in.”

IHSA regionals are Feb. 7.

Potter was as impressed with the two Saints wrestlers who lost Friday than with his winners.

Geneva competitive dance coach Amy VanWegenen routinely lauds the Vikings’ professionalism and work ethic. Those attributes have especially come in handy this season, as the program bids to defend last season’s IHSA Class 2A state title.

Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley caught up with VanWegenen before the Vikings competed in Friday’s state preliminaries at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. An edited transcript of their conversation follows in the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat:

How has the preparation been this week?

It’s been very solid.

They’re excited, and they’ve been working very hard.

They’re really ready to try to go defend their crown from last year. They’re really motivated. We lost some great dancers from last year, but we’ve got really good new dancers. … We have 12 returning dancers and graduated eight.

Is it a quiet confidence among the girls who are back?

Do they talk much about last year?

We try to focus on this year more, because I know last year we got first place, but this year is just so different.

It is motivational, though, to have 12 girls back who know

what to expect and have that feeling of winning from last year and realizing what it takes. ... I’ve had really good senior leadership. ... They’ve been really good role models.

So they do the things that I ask. They don’t complain about things. And as they do that, the other team members follow and do the same thing.

How has the buzz hit the student body at Geneva from what you’ve sensed?

I think everyone’s really proud of them. At all the basketball games when we perform, they’ve been responding and been very positive. We hosted the Upstate Eight Conference competition this year, and we had really good support from the school then, as well.

How much longer are the competition dances than what you might perform at a halftime show?

So just a little longer, maybe.

When did you notice the team hadn’t lost anything off its work ethic?

Oh, right away. I’m just really proud of the way they’ve worked this year. They haven’t let themselves get in their head or get cocky or anything.

That can be easy to do going off of how last season was. But they’ve really dialed in and

really focused on improving between each competition.

And they remain confident and that’s helped them. But they are very hard workers, and they’re very deserving of the awards they’ve got and the first-place trophies they’ve got this year. … They worked really hard during the summer, and then once competition season started [in October], I liked how they hit the ground running with that.

… I had a good feeling from the start that they’d be doing well.

Gymnasts often talk about different apparatuses at different gyms. Is there anything like that with your sport?

You really do transfer it to wherever you go. … The competitions all have categories, so it’s kind of like whatever your strengths are, that’s what your strengths are.

Temple’s route leads him to Butler football Pace Temple was tugged in many directions when it came to his college football recruitment.

Should he chase college football’s big-time and accept a scholarship offer from Wyoming or make an all-out push to walk on at NIU? Should he follow his older sister, Mady, a track and field athlete at DePauw, to the Greencastle, Indiana school?

Ultimately, the Geneva senior receiver found clarity in a similar fashion to a handful of other Tri-Cities athletes in recent weeks – with a visit to Butler. On Thursday night, Temple made public a decision he’d arrived at a few days earlier, committing to the Bulldogs.

His visit to Butler earlier this month overlapped with

Geneva teammate and defensive end Matt Loberg, who announced his Butler intentions earlier this week. Temple played wide receiver and defensive back for the Vikings but expects to focus on offense with the Bulldogs, a Division I Football Championship Subdivision program.

“You step on campus and really it’s just a Pace Temple great feeling,” Temple said.

“It’s got a small school feel, from the way teachers interact with their students and everything that small schools can offer, but it doesn’t feel small.

It has a great campus. It’s just a real wonderful place to be.

Several of Temple’s local rivals can relate. Butler’s roster is beginning to have the look of a Kane County Chronicle Football All-Area team.

In addition to Temple and Loberg, offensive linemen Mitch Krusz (Batavia) and Brennan Bosch (St. Charles East) are part of Butler’s 2015 recruiting class, joining a team that already includes former Batavia dynamo Anthony Scaccia, a running back, and quarterback Matt Shiltz, of St. Charles North.

“I think it goes to show just that we play in a great conference,” said Temple, a 6-foot-2, big-play threat. “There’s a lot of guys who have gone to Butler and had great success, a lot of guys there now having success and will continue to, and I think the guys who have committed from this class are going to go on and do some great things.”

Temple, also a basketball starter for Geneva, played a prominent role in restoring Geneva football’s winning ways. He caught 56 balls for 918 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior until tearing an MCL during the Vikings’ IHSA Class 7A quarterfinal loss to Cary-Grove.

After zeroing in on smaller schools late in the recruiting process, Temple considered

Butler, Dayton and DePauw.

He envisioned thriving in Butler’s spread offense and loved the message from Bulldogs coaches about being able to multitask on campus while still being pushed from a football standpoint.

“It was definitely the coaching staff,” Temple said. “I was impressed with all of them and just how much they love Butler and how much they bring in guys and really shape them to not only become better football players but better men. I know how great Butler is for my academics and life after football, and that was huge.”

St. Charles North girls soccer goalkeeper Shelby Stitz lost her father, Craig, suddenly in 2014 to a heart attack, but not her dreams for scholastic and athletic achievement that he cherished. Stitz and her two younger siblings continue to exceed expectations.

Stitz earned partial scholastic and athletic grants because of her dedication in the classroom and on the pitch.

She plans to start nursing school at Lewis University in the fall.

WEEKEND LIFE ‘It’s my job to be the sturdy standpipe’ Last Friday night, when I calmly, but firmly, texted my 16-year-old that he needed to come home from his busboy job “now,” and that I “wouldn’t budge,” he said to the restaurant’s bartender: “Hey, Victor, you know that one building that wasn’t burnt down in the Chicago Fire? That’s my mother.”

Ha! My friends agreed that this was high praise, coming from a teenager.

But I’ve got a confession to make. I was just tired.

Really, people, it was past my bedtime.

Noah usually buses tables on Sundays from noon to 8 p.m. (for a slightly tamer crowd of patrons); however, he took the Friday shift as a favor to a co-worker. At 10:20, though, when I realized that I was ready for some shuteye – and that 10:20 was plenty late for a 16-year-old to be working – I told him to come on home. He balked, citing his desire not to shirk responsibility (which I admire!), but it seemed to me that

So, I scrambled over to the DMV website, and there it was in black in white. Hallelujah! My kid may be an expert debater, but I’m no slouch, myself. I was so thrilled I had an Illinois statute to back me up, I could have kissed Jesse White.

As for my being as impervious as the Chicago Water Tower, the structure that famously remained standing as an inferno swirled about and virtually destroyed the Windy City in 1871.

Geesh, this may very well be the nicest thing anyone’s ever said about me. This water tower, which once housed a sturdy standpipe designed to equalize water pres-

sure, still stands as a celebration of endurance and recovery. Sounds a lot like parenting, no? Hard work, a lot of soul-searching and flexing, and gritty endurance. A hearty helping of equanimity helps, too; that firm-footing and faith in the value of even-tempered composure that enables one to really weather the storms – or fires – that may come over the years.

Ha! Noah likely had none of this stuff in mind when I set and stuck to my limit, Friday night, but hey, it’s my take-away. (Shh, don’t tell him, but he unwittingly emboldened me further. Someday, perhaps when he’s a parent, I’ll thank him and return the favor.)

The thing is, he grinned as he related his water-tower metaphor, so I’m thinking this was another instance of a kid being glad on the inside for a limit.

Know what I mean? It probably wouldn’t have been cool to admit his relief to his co-workers. (He’s the

youngest employee of this establishment.) But, for now, he’s got his water-tower mother to play the heavy.

I’m down with that. I’m his mom. It’s my job to be the sturdy standpipe.

Noah never complained, but school plus work equals a long day for a kid.

And for a parent. Yeah, I know, we’re just getting warmed up. Those days – and long, sleepless nights, when I’ll have older teenagers wanting to come home after midnight – aren’t far off for this household. For now, though, Jesse’s got my back.

The irony? Soon after Noah arrived home Friday night, he hit the hay. By then, after water-tower metaphors and consumptive fires and Chicago history ran amok in my head – and all over my keyboard – I was wide-awake, grinning ear-to-ear myself. Yup, weary as I was, I couldn’t sleep a wink. There’s the rub.

House shares Peck Farm’s legacy KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Now that the restoration process of the historic Peck House at Peck Farm Park in Geneva is completed, the property is open to the public.

Using the Public Museum Grant awarded by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the park district restored the front porch of the historic Peck House and redeveloped its exhibit space.

The front porch historic renovation, which was completed in September, returns the house to its full grandeur and provides more program space for field trips, Scout groups and summer camps, according to a news release.

Now, the interior of the house includes a history gallery, welcome center and gift shop.

The history gallery focuses on the Peck family and its legacy to Geneva and the surrounding area. Some highlights include a replica of the silo; an interactive family biography wall that includes four generations of the Pecks; and a short documen-

tary that outlines the story of the Peck family travels from Vermont to Illinois, which led to Pecks becoming one of the premier sheep ranchers in the country, states the release.

The welcome center allows staff to greet visitors as they enter the house.

Information in the room allows visitors the opportunity to learn what Peck Farm Park has to offer and provides a variety of souvenirs.

“Peck Farm Park is the jewel of the Geneva Park District and provides visitors from the region a unique look at the history of sheep ranching in Illinois,” said Trish Burns, manager of Peck Farm Park, in the release.

The house serves to preserve the history of the Peck family, but also provides open space and recreation opportunities to visitors. Visitors can set off on a footpath and bike trails winding through the area landscapes the Pecks would have seen in 1843.

Visitors to the park can climb the stairs of the observation silo, marvel at the wonder of the Butterfly House and play with their family at Hawks Hollow Nature Playground.

Pumping device helps heart patient waiting for transplant Dear Doctor K: I have severe heart failure. My doctor wants me to consider an LVAD. What do I need to know?

Dear Reader: Heart failure is a condition in which the heart cannot pump efficiently enough to meet the body’s need for blood.

It needs help; it’s too weak to do the job. Medicines can strengthen the heart, but only to some degree.

Ultimately, the only solution may be a heart transplant.

What about when medicines aren’t enough, and there isn’t a heart available to be transplanted? Increasingly, left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are being used as a “bridge” to transplantation.

An LVAD is a battery-driven pump that is implanted in the chest. It pumps oxygen-rich blood around the body. In so doing, it helps perform some of the work that normally must be done entirely by the left ventricle (the bottom left chamber of the heart).

In other words, it helps take the load off the left ventricle.

An LVAD consists of a pump, a control system and an energy supply. The pump can be located inside or outside the body. The control system and energy supply remain outside the body. (I’ve

A heart transplant can be performed only when there is a healthy heart available. For that to happen, someone must have died of something other than heart disease and have a healthy heart. Furthermore, that person must have agreed in advance to allow their heart to be given to someone else, should they die.

Finally, the potential donor must be immunologically similar to the person who needs the heart.

If not, a transplanted heart would be rejected by the recipient’s immune system.

Because of problems with the availability of organs for transplantation, 18 people die each day waiting for organ transplants.

LVADs help keep some people alive until a donor heart becomes available.

Other heart failure patients may not qualify for a heart transplant because of medical conditions that disqualify them.

For these patients, an LVAD may be used to lighten the extra burden on the heart and give them more time. With this additional support, the other conditions may improve enough for the person to become a transplant candidate.

In the future, I expect that LVADs will increasingly be used as a permanent alternative to transplantation. But they do carry serious risks. For example, an infection can develop where the line to the battery pack exits the skin. In addition, blood clots can form. This requires ongoing use of blood-thinning medications.

But these drugs, in combination with other changes caused by the LVAD, increase the risk of excess bleeding. The dual hazards of clotting and bleeding increase the risk of stroke.

Despite these potential risks, LVAD technology is continually improving. Fortunately, you have available to you today a treatment that was not available several decades ago. I wish you the best.

According to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, soaped hands must be rubbed vigorously for at least 10 seconds to suspend the microorganisms (germs) before rinsing them away.

Warm water is best. Hot water could damage the skin. Germs tend to accumulate around cuticles, beneath fingernails and in the creases of the hands, so concentrate on these areas. It is virtually impossible to keep hands germ-free, but there are times when it is critical to always wash hands: • Before you handle or eat food • After you visit the bathroom • After handling uncooked food (especially all types of meat) • After handling money (if you are fortunate enough to have any) • After blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing into your hand • After playing with a pet • After handling garbage Germs accumulate on hands as you perform daily activities. By not washing hands, you can acquire or pass on a host of ailments, from the common cold to serious diseases such as dysentery (intestinal infection) or hepatitis (inflammation of the liver). Most cases of diarrhea and

My grandma always tells me I’m lazy and that when she was young she had to get up at 5:30 every morning to help feed the animals on the farm before school.

She tells my parents that maybe I’m on drugs or drinking because sleeping till 9:30 a.m. just isn’t normal. Well, I’m not doing either of these things, and it’s my body that tells me I need the rest. But on school days I’m always up at 6:30 because my first class is at 8 a.m.

Teens, more than any other age group (except infants), need extra sleep.

Teens are growing at a rapid rate, which puts stress on their bodies, so they need the extra sleep just to stay mentally and physically fit. It’s always better to have an extra bit of sleep than not to have enough.

That is sometimes true at the bridge table, but occasionally you can “control” what your partner does with your signals. For example, you are defending against a spade contract and badly need partner to shift to a heart. If you can make a discard, an unnecessarily high heart would ask partner to lead that suit. You hope this controls his play, but you cannot be sure. Maybe partner has his own plan in mind. If you can take total control, do so.

In this deal, South is in four spades. West leads the diamond ace. When East signals with his nine, West cashes the diamond queen and continues with the diamond king. What should East discard?

North might be tempted to rebid two hearts, hoping partner can steer into no-trump with a diamond stopper. Two hearts, though, is a reverse, which “guarantees” longer clubs than hearts. Two no-trump accurately describes the nature – balanced – and high-card power – an excellent 17, 18, 19 or a poor 20 points – of the North hand. Also, it is in theory game-forcing.

East would like a heart shift at trick four. But the heart four might not look high to his partner.

Similarly, the club seven might not look low, discouraging. East should take control. He should ruff his partner’s winner and cash the heart ace. Then there is no danger that the contract will make.

Note that if the defenders do not take the first four tricks, South runs for home with six spades and four clubs.

Carriage Oaks Retirement Community is a beautiful senior independent living community for seniors aged 55-plus.

Located in the beautiful Fox River Valley area with many local amenities and services at 1500 S. 14th St., St. Charles, Carriage Oaks offers a great deal for active seniors.

Carriage Oaks is a nonprofit corporation that is democratically governed by an elected Board of Directors, comprised of both residential members and representatives of its sponsors—the city of St. Charles and St. Charles Township, as well as Carriage Oaks management company, Essex Communities, based in Omaha, Nebraska.

If they choose to, residents at Carriage Oaks can be very involved with the day-today operation of the community— serving on the Board of Directors, running the coffee shop, doing gardening in the six raised garden beds, as well as serving on several committees.
