Shops on East Main Street to get new life Franky’s Red Hots plans to move into the former Wendy’s

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A doughnut shop and a hot dog joint are expected to bring new life to two shuttered stores on East Main Street in St. Charles.

City planner Matt O’Rourke said it’s nice to see the reinvestment along East Main Street, which recently was reconstructed from Seventh Avenue in St. Charles to Route 59 in West Chicago.

The Wendy’s near Dunham Road was one such business that closed during construction, but the building soon will reopen as a different restaurant. Crews have been working since November to transform the building at 2526 E. Main St. into a Franky’s Red Hots, which offers such fare as pizza, beef, gyros, hot dogs and ribs.

The West Chicago resident said he always has been looking for a second lo-

cation, and the site on East Main Street near Dunham Road caught his eye. Unlike his Addison location, he said, the St. Charles store will have a drive-thru.

East Main Street might also get a Dunkin’ Donuts.

O’Rourke said the franchisee looking to put a Dunkin’ Donuts on Route 38 also is interested in the former Qdoba at 2701 E. Main St., which neighbors a T-Mobile store.

“When I think about that space, it’d be tough to get another restaurant in there,” O’Rourke said. “It’s nice that somebody’s looking at doing that.”

The Plan Commission and St. Charles City Council are expected to review a request for a drive-thru stacking space reduction, O’Rourke said. The ordinance requires that 15 spaces be provided, he said.

The issue could come to the Plan Commission as early as next week, O’Rourke said.

City sets lease agreement District 101 with farmer in Maple Park looks to update schools’ facilities

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The Batavia School Board is looking at the needs of the district’s facilities for the next four years.

School board members Tuesday reviewed the district’s comprehensive capital improvement plan, which details facility needs from 2014 through 2018. In February, staff will recommend to the board on what projects should take priority for the 2014-15 school year as part of the capital and staffing plan.

The major update to this year’s plan is the incorporation of the athletic field improvements at Batavia High School.

However, only the components of that plan that were deemed a safety concern received any type of early priority, said Pat Browne, the district’s director of buildings and grounds.

Improvements to the varsity baseball field at Batavia High School are underway after several groups have committed funds to the $190,000 project.

In October, Batavia School District 101 Board members approved agreements with Batavia Youth Baseball, the Batavia Bulldog Boosters, Batavia-based Eagle Concrete and the Batavia High

School baseball team, which are committing funds to the renovation of the field’s backdrops and dugouts, estimated to cost $190,000.

The improvements got underway in November. All the work is expected to be completed by late March or early April, which is when the varsity baseball team’s season begins, Batavia High School Athletic Director Dave Andrews has said.

Andrews said it was a priority to do the baseball field improvements first because of safety concerns over fencing around the field, which are going to be addressed.

The district improvement plan also details the work that needs to be done at the different schools in the district, including at Rotolo Middle School, where the rear parking lot is deteriorating quickly, according to the report.

Work also is needed at other schools such as J.B. Nelson Elementary School, where the plumbing system needs to be improved to prevent building leaks.

GENEVA – Aldermen acting as the Committee of the Whole unanimously approved a two-year lease agreement with a Maple Park farmer for 286.4 acres at Prairie Green Preserve.

Under state law, the city can enter into two-year leases.

Steve Pitstick Farms of Maple Park just completed a two-year lease agreement for the 2012 and 2013 crop seasons.

Officials said Geneva accepted two sealed bids to lease the farmland and at $375 a acre, Pitstick’s was the best, cost-wise, for a total cash rent of $107,400.

The other bid from C and C Farms was for $236.33 and

$239.33 per acre for the 2014 and 2015 seasons, respectively, officials said.

Third Ward Alderman Dean Kilburg said with commodities projected to be weaker in 2014 and 2015, “this is a good lease for the city and one that I will support.”

The City Council will take final action on the lease agreement.

City staff also noted that Pitstick “has used environmentally sound farming methods” at the Prairie Green Preserve.

“Over the years, Mr. Pitstick has developed a unique knowledge of the … site and maintains a compatible use relationship between the prairie/wetland areas of the site and farmed areas,” according to a staff memo.

Pitstick said he has been farming that acreage for 10 years and is careful not to use chemicals near the sensitive wetland areas.

“We use all the approved chemicals that are available – but only as needed – and we limit the amount that we use,” Pitstick said. “They’ve brought in some species of plants in the wetland, and they’re sensitive to anything.

We’re very respectful of that.

We watch the applications.

Pitstick said he typically grows crops that are half corn and soybeans, though last year because of market conditions with regard to ethanol, he grew corn only.

Varboncoeur is the nun in charge of the Servants of the Holy Heart of Mary, where a convent, business office and retreat center are set back from the road, right next to The Holmstad on Batavia Avenue in Geneva Township.

With her feet clad in flipflops, toenails arrayed with red nail polish, Mason is in charge of vocation ministry, welcoming novitiates and organizing retreats.

“We are a small order,” Varboncoeur said. “At one time, we were in 11 states, but now we are only in Illinois right now. We are an international community. ... We started in France in 1860 and came here in 1889, so we are celebrating 125 years this year.”

Although its provincial center is in Kankakee, the local convent is known as a community, Varboncoeur said. Its particular calling is to be a formative community, meaning women who think they want to join the spiritual life of a sister live there and try it out.

“That is our reason for being here,” Varboncoeur said.

“If a woman is interested in joining us, she would most likely begin right here.”

Varboncoeur herself was in the original group of novices who came to the convent in 1956. She left to go to Kankakee where she worked in a hospital as a medical technician before coming back to the Geneva Township convent in 2003.

“My official work was formation directress, working with women who would be interested in joining the order,” Varboncoeur said. “For women to learn about the congregation, religious life, spirituality,

deepen her spirituality. All the things that would prepare her to be able to make vows at some point. ... It’s kind of like the orientation years.”

Their days begin with individual prayer. Each is responsible for her own breakfast and lunch, and they take turns making dinner. They eat their evening meal together.

“Then after dishes, we have our prayer in the chapel [using] the official prayer of the church,” Varboncoeur said.

“There are prayers for each day of the week for four weeks.

And then we start over again.

Sometimes nuns have outside jobs, such as when Varboncoeur worked at Mercy Center and ministered there.

Now she works at the convent in vocation ministry, which includes going out to schools and colleges to share the vocation with young women.

“We tell everybody – every single person, every Christian – [they have] a call from God. And the call is about living a particular way of life,”

To meet the needs of the 49 hospitals served by the Heartland Blood Centers, almost 600 units of blood are needed every day. Individuals can donate blood every 56 days.

To be a blood donor, people must be at least 17 years old, or 16 with written parental permission, weigh at least 110 pounds, be symptom-free of cold, flu and allergies and be in general good health.

“We want to thank our loyal blood donors,” Moeggenberg said. “We need all blood types at this time.”

Myriah R. Rogers, of the 500 block of Illinois Avenue, was charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, a felony.

Charges against Rogers were authorized Monday.

Rogers was released from the Kane County Jail on

Tuesday after posting $3,500 bail.

Her next court date is Feb. 6.

Rogers and the victim, who is a 21-year-old Batavia man, met around 8:40 p.m. Jan. 10 in the 100 block of First Myriah R. Street, police said.

Rogers “They knew each other,” Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said.

“She called him. They were going to meet.”

As he was getting in Rog-

ers’ car, an unknown man grabbed the victim from behind, Bretz said.

“There was a short scuffle, and he was able to wiggle out of his jacket, which contained a cellphone and car keys,” Bretz said. “He took off running.”

Bretz said that Rogers “made some statements to Batavia police that were enough to lead us to believe there was a robbery in the making.”

Police are investigating the robbery.

The cold and snowy weather has dealt a blow to the area’s blood supply.

“This winter, blood collections are down from last year because of the weather,” said Jill Moeggenberg, the Heartland Blood Centers spokeswoman. “We need healthy blood donors to donate as soon as possible.”

The independent, nonprofit blood center serves 49 hospitals in a 12-county region in Illinois and Indiana, including Delnor Hospital in Geneva and Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora.

More than 2,000 units of blood have been lost in January because of the weather, along with an increase in illness-related cancellations, Moeggenberg said. January is National Blood Donor Month, and the need for blood is especially urgent because it is the highest transfusion month of the year.

A Schaumburg teenager charged in connection to multiple vehicle burglaries in St. Charles Township must pay about $3,500 in restitution, according to Kane County court records.

The restitution requirement is among numerous terms and conditions Rebecca A. Olson, 19, must fulfill as part of a deferred prosecution agreement with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Judge Marmarie J. Kostelny accepted the agreement Tuesday. It is in effect through July 2015.

If Olson meets all the terms

and conditions, the pending charges against her – three counts of unlawful use of a credit or debit card and one count of unlawful possession of a credit card – will be dismissed, according to the Second Chance Program agreement.

Failure to comply could result in Olson’s termination from the Rebecca A. program, and Olson her case may be returned to court for prosecution, the document states.

The Geneva Public Library is acting out a farce Don’t get me wrong. I love the Geneva Public Library.

Like with a best friend, I often hang with it after school.

However, when a loved one begins behaving erratically, like, say, a Justin Bieber, those closest to the poor soul need to say something.

In a farce, the audience laughs at characters blind to their own ineptitude. What follows is a Spark Notes summary of the plot played out at GPL. The curtain opened on a library board thinking that buying a factory where contaminants were manufactured would make a good reading room. GPL contracted to buy the Cetron building, pending environmental inspection. The board withdrew its offer when the inspectors emerged glowing (just kidding).

Soon afterward, newspapers announced library Director Matt Teske would reveal GPL’s future. Excited to hear concrete plans for a refurbished or relocated library, instead I ended up watching a PowerPoint wish list, including giant picture windows, enclaves for teens and a cozy café.

Poor, poor, pitiful me.

Expecting the final act, I sat through a treacly overture.

The board then granted Teske a leave of absence that started in mid-November and put Assistant Director Peggy Carlson in charge, although she reportedly did not want to be named interim director. Upon his return, Teske resigned as director at $110,000 a year, and the board immediately appointed him as (a second) assistant director at $86,000 a year.

RIVER TOWN CHRONICLES Rick Holinger Meanwhile, the board had hired Marilyn Boria, a temporary management consultant, at $60 a hour for 15 hours a week. When Teske resigned, the board voted her interim director. If you’re doing the math, that makes three administrators doing the job Carlson performed solo during Teske’s absence.

To paraphrase Luigi Pirandello, this absurdist drama was unfolding like “A President and Six Board Members in Search of a Direction.”

A seventh board member, Susan Shivers, exposed the emperor’s nakedness, voting against the triumvirate, declaring, “We never had or

needed two assistant directors in the past.” Shivers further maintained that Teske had “ … been on the job six or seven years and either he can get it right by now or he cannot.”

Touting decorum over blunt appraisal, board member Bob Shiffler called her comment “inappropriate.”

Many community members disagreed. The Kane County Chronicle Sound Off included: “I support Susan Shivers’ comments ... ,” and, “If [Teske] cannot handle the job, get someone else ... .”

In the final scene, the play’s protagonist, board President Esther Steel, delivered a stunning monologue, stating neither Carlson nor Teske wanted to act as director. The Chronicle summarized that Boria would be a part-time interim director, requiring Teske to “step up

and fill the void,” Steel said.

“Matt knows he’s going to [be] primary acting director even with Marilyn there ... . He will be, in a lot of ways, still the director. Marilyn is the boss when she is there.”

So … who’s in charge?

Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a darn; I’ve grown weary trying to figure it out.

Maybe what this play needs is a new casting call.

If not, the farce could turn tragic.

Study: 1 in 8 U.S. children obese by kindergarten age

By MICHELLE FAY CORTEZ Bloomberg News One in eight children in the United States is obese when entering kindergarten, with the ratio increasing through the elementary school years, a nationwide study found.

By eighth grade, 1 in 5 U.S. students is obese and another 17 percent are overweight, according to the study released Thursday by the New England Journal of Medicine.

Most of the increase takes place before fifth grade, giving researchers key information about the obesity epidemic among American children and the ages at which they are most vulnerable.

Obesity more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents from the early 1980s, although researchers say the rates may now have plateaued.

The condition puts people at risk for diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, stroke and arthritis. First lady Michelle Obama has focused on childhood obesity, urging food companies to make healthier products and encouraging more exercise with her “Let’s Move” campaign.

The study found that 5-year-olds carrying extra weight for their age were four times more likely to become obese during the elementary school years. Almost half of those who developed obesity were overweight when school started. The reverse also was true: among overweight kindergartners, only 13 percent were normal weight in eighth grade.

The findings suggest obesity develops mainly in children who are already overweight and tapers off over time, as the pool of susceptible students is exhausted, the researchers said.

“We speculate that obesity-prevention efforts that are focused on children who are overweight by the age of 5 years may be a way to target the children who are most susceptible to becoming obese during later childhood and adolescence,” said the researchers led by Solveig Cunningham of Emory University’s department of global health in Atlanta.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The researchers analyzed data from 21,260 kindergartners enrolled in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study in 1998. More than 9,000 were followed through the eighth grade, providing a representative sample of the 3.8 million children the same age across the U.S. “This cohort is of particular interest because they were growing up during the 1990s and 2000s, when obesity became a major health concern,” the researchers said.

Researchers didn’t have information on weight until the children entered school or what happened after eighth grade, making it impossible to track the full trajectory of the obesity epidemic in the group, they said.

It’s also not clear if similar patterns were seen among U.S. children who entered school in subsequent years, they said. In the study, a child was considered overweight if they were above the 85th percentile for weight and obese if they were above the 95th percentile as calculated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Previous research suggests obesity develops in the U.S. at a rate of 2.5 percent a year from adolescence to adulthood.

“The most common call, in our world, is marriage.

And we have people who are single, that is another call.

And a call to religious life – consecrated religious life – or a call to ordained life – that’s priesthood or permanent deacon,” Varboncoeur said. “Every single person is called by God to one of those ways of life.”

Among the programs the nuns host is the Servant Companion of the Holy Heart of Mary, for women who want to live in community with the sisters for up to five years.

“We’ve had a couple of women who participated in that program – one who stayed for four years and one for one year,” Varboncoeur said. “And then they went back to their own homes.”

Mason said the program is meant for women who want to deepen their spirituality and are interested in the religious life – but not permanently.

“We continue to try to find ways to share the gift that we have of our spirituality,” Varboncoeur said.

Another relatively new program available for men, as well, is called Consecrated Laity. It is for a single, widowed or divorced person who is called to make a vow of celibacy. Four women ranging in age from 30 to 80 are in the six-month preparation period for this, Varboncoeur said.

“I thought in our culture, this is not going to work. But these women are so committed to the call to experience ... this vow,” Varboncoeur said. “It’s a private vow for a year at a time. At the end of a year, they wouldn’t have to continue.”

The community shares everything in common. Mason, who is the community treasurer, explained that when sisters work outside the community, their salaries are contributed to the congregation. And when they retire and receive Social Security, that, too, is contributed.

“Everything is belonged in common,” Mason said.

“We do not own anything individually. If one community does not have same kind of revenue coming in to assist in taking care of the bills, then it is supplemented by another community – because it all goes into the same pot.”

Among the changes and challenges the church faces, Varboncoeur said: “There are many different perspectives, from the far left to the far right. In my frame of mind, the church is broad enough to encompass all of those.”

And the possibility of women’s ordination? “Maybe,” Varboncoeur said. “I don’t know that it will happen in our lifetime.”

Mason said the church’s issues are something to pray about.

“If you don’t talk about these things, you’re not going to grow,” Mason said. “We do both, pray about it and talk about it. And we try to do what we can [to help] others in our environment to become holy. That’s our job.

That’s our purpose – to help one another reach heaven.”

Larkin shatters Saints’ title hopes

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The Larkin boys basketball team’s mastery of Tri-Cities teams continues, with St. Charles East’s conference title hopes the latest victim.

The Royals remained unbeaten in Upstate Eight Conference River play and swept the regular season series over host East on Thursday, topping the Saints, 64-55.

Superior defense and rebounding led the way for Larkin as East’s potent offense misfired most of the game.

“It’s a little frustrating,” East senior forward AJ Washington said. “When you go into the game, you know it’s going to be a big game, you’ve got to treat it like a championship game. They’re a great team. You’ve just got to know you’ve got to play harder and put everything on the line.”

With the win, Larkin (173, 8-0 UEC River) took a large step toward repeating as con-

ference champions.

“Unfortunately, I think we played ourselves out of the conference title tonight, but as I put on the board in [the meeting room], there’s regionals ahead,” said East coach Pat Woods, whose team also fell behind victorious St. Charles North in the conference picture.

A miserable third quarter of offense – with East standout Dom Adduci on the bench for much of it with three fouls – saddled the Saints with a 4433 deficit entering the fourth quarter. East was 1 of 11 from the field in the third quarter and only marginally better in the fourth, drawing no closer than seven points on a pair of occasions early in the quarter.

East (12-9, 6-3) stayed in it for a half – longer than when the teams met in Elgin in December – but couldn’t buy a basket from anywhere for prolonged stretches of the second half.

Returning from a twogame injury absence, Adduci

led the Saints with 20 points.

Like his teammates, though, Adduci was cold for much of the second half, missing his first eight shots from the floor.

Four Royals starters were in double figures while only two were for East, with Washington (12 points, 11 rebounds, three blocked shots) providing his customary high-energy performance.

Senior guard Kendale McCullum had a game-high 22 points for Larkin and played a leading role defensively in keeping East’s guard tandem of Adduci and Cole Gentry (seven points) from clicking as much as usual.

“What’s good is they’re similar to us, me and [Derrick] Streety,” McCullum said. “So we know how to defend guys like that. … They do a good job of handling the ball and finding the open guys, so we’ve got to keep our eyes on both of them at all times.”

The usually deep Saints struggled mightily off the bench, as no East substitute

scored until guard Jake Clodi scored five points in the final 3:13 of the game.

East recovered from a turnover-plagued first quarter to head into halftime trailing by one, 31-30. The Saints made their first three 3-pointers of the night but it proved to be a faulty indication of the shooting night to come.

“I was waiting for it to click,” Woods said. “Because usually once we start going from the outside, it’s contagious. Unfortunately, it was contagious the opposite way.”

The Saints regularly failed to finish drives and convert put-backs against a formidable Larkin front line that includes brawny freshman Christian Negron (10 points, 12 rebounds) and senior Andrew Jones (10 points, nine rebounds). The Royals out-rebounded the Saints, 44-29.

Both teams have substantial conference tests awaiting Saturday as Larkin visits St. Charles North and East welcomes Geneva.

Elgin drilled just four of its 17 3-point attempts in the first half, but still had a flair for the clutch.

While the North Stars handled the Maroons for the majority of both opening quarters, Elgin’s ability to beat the buzzer stunted at least a portion of that momentum.

Ryan Sitter trimmed North’s first-quarter lead to five points before Butler (23 points) hit a 3 that pulled Elgin to within 38-27 at the break.

The North Stars struck from distance four times themselves in the first half – on seven attempts – displaying their range, if only to spread the wealth from an effective inside game.

Callaghan contributed 10 points and nine rebounds by halftime en route to finishing with 13 and 14, respectively. There also were

consistent spurts of energy from coach Tom Poulin’s big men off the bench, including Camden Cotter and Johnny Davern.

North eventually overtook Elgin with its stamina and a 20-for-23 effort from the free throw line. It all added up to the team’s fifth win in six games, while helping exorcise the memory of the North Stars’ most recent game before Thursday, a 90-55 loss at St. Charles East.

Larkin defeated the host Saints, 64-55, on Thursday.

North lost by 15 at Larkin in mid-December and has been itching for its next chance

ever since.

“Our kids know Larkin pretty well, and it’s a big game for us. They’re a stateranked team, and we feel like we can compete with stateranked teams,” Poulin said.

“We need to go out and walk the walk instead of talking the talk. ...

“That’s a big-game environment at home for us, and it’s the toughest challenge in our conference. It’s the toughest challenge in the area. So you can’t ask for anything more. That’s why you play, is to be able to have an opportunity to compete against somebody like Larkin.”

GIRLS GYMNASTICS: UPSTATE EIGHT CONFERENCE MEET

Vikings set new bar, win league meet

By IAN MATTHEWS editorial@kcchronicle.com NAPERVILLE – It seems each time the Geneva girls gymnastics team has reached its peak, a new bar is set with a high score. Coming into Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference meet, Vikings coach Kim Hostman had high hopes, but Geneva posted a school-record score of 149.15 to exceed all expectations.

The remarkable score makes the Vikings a serious threat at the state meet.

The familiar names were all on the scoresheet for Geneva in Claire Rose Ginsberg, Dom Brognia and Grace Ginsberg, but it was the depth that helped the Vikings push past runner-up St. Charles and the old school mark that made Hostman most happy.

“We had such an amazing [meet], we worked really hard all week as I’ve been

pushing them all week and obviously it paid off,” Hostman said. “We stuck almost every landing; the girls have been working so hard on them. They’re supporting each other, which is key.”

Hostman was nervous about Geneva’s start on the beam, but strong showings from the Ginsberg sisters, Brognia and Clare Scatterday provided the perfect launch point for the meet.

“We had a couple of falls that we counted and we were still really strong,” Hostman said. “We had a lot of difficulty on connections but if we clean up that, we’re right on track.”

Along with the high score, Claire Rose Ginsberg continued her solid season, capturing the conference championship with an all-around score of 38.05, beating out teammate Brognia by .35.

“We added a few new skills for her so that obvious-

ly helped on the all-around,” Hostman said. “Obviously that paid off for her. She’s young but everyone has been rallying around her.”

Geneva has quite the duo with Claire Rose Ginsberg and Brognia, who took second in the all-around at 37.75.

Brognia took first in the uneven parallel bars (9.35) and second in the balance beam (9.6) and floor exercise (9.4).

Claire Rose Ginsberg took first in the vault (9.6), floor (9.65) and third in the balance beam (9.55).

ELGIN – Thursday’s boys basketball game between St. Charles North and Elgin ended with North point guard Alec Goetz harmlessly clutching the ball near midcourt.

Nothing flashy for the North Stars, but nothing nightmarish, either.

Elgin beat the buzzer in each of the first three quarters of the Upstate Eight Conference River Division game, staying pesky throughout. In their first action in nearly two weeks, the North Stars took a 70-61 win and exhaled.

“I think that it’s a function of us not playing for a while,” North guard Jake Ludwig said. “We were getting tired of practicing against each other, trying to get stuff out of our system. We definitely have got to get that better for Saturday and Larkin. I’m glad we won, though.”

Ludwig laid out the bottom line for North – which hosts conference-leading Larkin on Saturday – moments after being blunt with his own play down the stretch.

Elgin (7-12, 3-5 UEC River) erased an 11-point halftime deficit at the end of the third quarter and was trading punches with North until Ludwig took over. After Isaiah Butler banked in a 3 to tie the game at 61 with just less than three minutes to go, Ludwig scored the game’s final nine points.

“I just told myself I don’t want to lose,” said Ludwig, who finished with 16 points. “I decided it’s time to start playing. Got to get this win.”

Goetz (19 points) and forward Jack Callaghan (13) joined Ludwig in double figures. The extra options were a boon for the North Stars (12-6, 6-2) as the Maroons ramped up their speed and full-court trap after halftime. North shot just

Batavia wrestler Birkhaug ‘a different athlete’ Batavia junior 160-pound wrestler Jake Birkhaug shoots every day during the season.

There isn’t a basketball in sight.

“Swore it off,” Birkhaug said. “No more.”

This time, Birkhaug is honoring the shot as the offensive backbone of only one sport after losing his sophomore season to a broken right ankle suffered Jake Birkhaug during a pickup game. The Bulldogs couldn’t be happier. Birkhaug enters tonight’s home dual against Kaneland with 20 victories and is fresh off a fifth-place finish at the Upstate Eight Conference tournament.

His comeback hasn’t come without incident, however.

Birkhaug strained his right shoulder last week, which affected his tournament run

but isn’t feared to hinder him during next month’s state series.

At conference, the condition also worked in his favor.

Facing Streamwood’s Darell James in the fifth-place bout, Birkhaug won, 6-0, behind a sly style that hinged on baiting James into working his offense before sprawling to execute a counterattack.

Birkhaug extended a successful recent history with James, which included a 1-0 victory Jan. 17 in a UEC River dual. His effort at the conference tournament helped Batavia to a fourth-place finish in the 14-team field.

“Going from not wrestling last year to coming back into the room, I’ve become a different athlete entirely,” Birkhaug said, “and for the better.”

Soto set for big roll: IHSA winter state tournaments kick off this weekend, bringing the first of many tales of long-term dedication coming to fruition.

QUICK READ Kevin Druley Geneva senior Jason Soto fits into the “dialed-in” category, to be sure. He just hasn’t resided there as long as some peers.

“As a kid,” Soto said, “I might have bowled a handful of times until freshman year.”

Not far removed from teaching himself to bowl – much like his father, Mark – Soto will descend on the IHSA boys bowling state tournament at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon beginning today. His average has hovered between 210 and 215 this season.

Soto’s supporters include Vikings coach Jordan Zimberoff, who never met a youth league he didn’t like growing up but attended Glenbard South years before the first bowling state series in 2003.

“I’m glad that they’ve been

able to expand the opportunities,” Zimberoff said.

And how. The IHSA added a regional component to the traditional sectional-state format this season as 202 schools entered the state series – double the ’03 total of 101.

While 19 of the 24 state qualifying-teams hail from along or north of the Insterstate 80 corridor, the drive south is a familiar one for Chicago area bowlers.

Jason Soto Zimberoff hopes Soto’s success makes St. Clair Bowl or Rockford’s Cherry Bowl – site of next month’s girls state tournament – a destination for any Geneva students on the fence about extracurriculars.

“We’re very much used to taking people who are just recreational bowlers and trying to turn them very quickly into someone who can com-

pete on the high school level,” Zimberoff said.

STCE Special Olympics b-ball back in action: The St. Charles East Illinois Special Olympics basketball team is set to face the Saints’ boys varsity at 6 p.m. Tuesday in one of the school’s latest community-building traditions.

In 2012, coach Pat Woods’ club filled in as the opposition when an ISO team from Naperville District 203 was unable to travel. The game was part of the schedule in 2013, and included raffles, cheerleaders and a bunch of Saints Superfans at full-throat.

In addition to creating a 16-driver playoff bracket, NASCAR also recently announced design changes to make cars more aerodynamic along with changes to qualifying.

“I think it’s absolutely a shot in the arm,” said Scott Paddock, the president of Chicagoland Speedway, who spoke by phone from NASCAR’s meetings in Charlotte, N.C. “I think these are game changers.

“I think everyone can understand a bracket format in the playoffs. Now, for the casual fan, this sport has become much more easy to understand. Any time you’re talking round-by-round eliminations – think of the NCAA tournament – that creates additional intensity and excitement, week to week.”

As one of those casual fans, I’m glad I can stop worrying about a point system that never made sense.

Here’s a rundown of how the new bracket will work.

VIEWS Tom Musick Starting Sept. 14 at Chicagoland Speedway, the top 16 drivers from the regular season will compete for the opportunity to host the Golden Radiator Hose. OK, so maybe I made up the name for the championship trophy, but it’s safe to say that the winning driver will make a trunk full of money.

The 10-race format remains in tact, but the details have changed in a big way. After the first three races – Chicagoland, New Hampshire and Dover – the bottom four drivers will be eliminated and 12 will remain in the championship hunt. After the next three races – Kansas, Charlotte and Talladega – the next four bottom drivers will be eliminated and eight will remain. After the next three races – Martinsville, Texas and Phoenix –

only four drivers will remain.

Get it? Got it? Good.

The final race at Homestead-Miami will be winner take all among those four drivers. No advanced math, no complicated formula.

If you blow your engine or get a flat tire or somehow manage to hit a deer, then you’re out of luck. As is the case with the Super Bowl and the NCAA championship game and many other big events, you have to perform at your best when it matters most in order to be crowned the champion.

“Under the old system, a driver could finish fourth, fifth or sixth and say today was a good day,” Paddock said. “Now, the priority and the premium is on winning. I think you’re going to get a lot of Cinderella stories.”

And increased ticket sales, which is a great thing for tracks such as Chicagoland.

old McHenry resident said he races about 20 weekends a year at Rockford Speedway with his old-school, 1977 Monte Carlo that used to be popular among legendary drivers such as Dale Earnhardt.

Although NASCAR’s new format could diminish the importance of consistency, Hardesty said, it also could draw in more casual fans because it’s simple to understand.

“I think it’s definitely trying to draw more people in,” Hardesty said. “I know our crowds [in Rockford] have been down the last couple of years.”

But spirits are up.

It’s easy to see why.

“This is a very historic and significant day for the sport and for the fans,” Paddock said.

“This is as excited as I’ve seen folks for a long, long time.”

How about The (Even More) Amazing Race? The Sweet 16 Bracket of Left Turn Lunacy? Or maybe we could call it the Ballad of Burnin’ Rubber?

Fine, so there’s probably a reason why I am not a marketing consultant.

But the reality is that NASCAR took a big step forward Thursday regardless of whether it comes up with a catchy, “March Madness” type of moniker to describe the new Chase for the Sprint Cup. The changes will carry big implications in Joliet, where the Chicagoland Speedway will serve as the first site of an elimination-style tournament to determine the champion driver.

Jordan Delegal played linebacker at Northern Illinois from 2009 to 2011 and now works for Paragon Marketing Group in Chicago. Shaw Media talked with Delegal about college football reform and Northwestern’s recent attempt to form a union. The following is an edited transcript:

Why do you support the Northwestern football players’ recent efforts and attempt to unionize?

I support them because we relate on so many different levels. There comes a time where enough is enough.

We have all these different documentaries that talk about [the NCAA], all these investigations that happen from the players’ side of things.

But nobody really comes at the guy making the rules.

Especially for them to come together for a real policy, not just for money.

Was this something you had heard about or talked about when you were playing at NIU? At NIU, we’re a little bit different than Northwestern.

We’re a smaller school, so the funding is a bit different. It’s a bigger conference versus a smaller conference.

It’s a little bit different when you hear it from somebody who has all those things that we don’t have. It’s the difference between the haves and have-nots. When somebody actually speaks out about it on a smaller scale, people kind of dust it under

the rug, but when somebody’s on a bigger scale and is a part of those [BCS] conferences, people start listening then.

We spoke about it, but there weren’t many things we could do about it as a player and as a smaller mid-level conference.

Everybody talks about it from high school to college, but once you get to college it’s a little bit different. They are talking about it now and providing awareness.

What are the main issues, from a player’s perspective, that need to be fixed?

One is the medical side.

There are a ton of guys that put it all on the line to be great in a sport. Obviously, you want the medical portion of it because we put our body out there on a daily basis.

Two, not only medical, but the professional development.

A lot of guys who come out of school, if they graduate ... a lot of these guys aren’t ready for the real world.

It’s not typical for a student-athlete to have those internships, those externships, those different opportunities where they are able to exercise their business skill sets and professional skill sets.

That’s something that needs to be looked into, as well.

Those are my two solid standpoints. I don’t think we need to just outright pay people for what they do, but we need to provide a network of former athletes ... or even business owners who love to hire student-athletes, where

they are able to get these guys and develop them professionally. It would be like Business 101.

I prepared for what I knew was coming, but some guys still don’t prepare for it.

You mention the missed opportunities you have in getting internships and externships, is that because you had summer training and football-related activities?

Do you know NIU teammates who are struggling with health issues or professionally?

A large portion of it is those voluntary, but mandatory, practices that we have in the summer. We’re really not able to go home. ... Everybody’s situation is different.

For the redshirt freshmen guys, they want to play that next year because they are development guys, so they’ll stay [on campus.]

For other guys, you want to stay a step ahead of competition, so there may be a [position competition] that you want to get ahead in.

They don’t realize that these internships make sense, as well. At the time, you really don’t focus on it because your main goal is to win the league, win your conference championship, go to the best bowl game and then ultimately go to the NFL. You’re not really thinking about those

I will never speak names, but not only at NIU, but guys who are from Miami, who put all their eggs in one basket and they are struggling. They are struggling professionally because they can’t find jobs that fit their initiatives. But then I have some guys who are doing a great job, who are going to medical school, who are trying to be doctors and trying to be lawyers. It really depends on the person.

I could never say because of football I wasn’t able to accomplish my dreams. No, not at all. It is because of football, I was able to go to college and expand my mind. I used this vehicle to get out of my parents’ situation. I’m from a very bad neighborhood in Miami, Fla., and I was able to get out of there because of this game and I love this game.

Now do I think things could’ve been different, yeah of course.

You have to live in the moment and try to do the most networking that you can, and if the NCAA can mandate different programs to where they can grow players over the summer or in the spring or somehow, that would really help the future for these guys.

Do you think eventually players will get a share of the money down the line?

They need to. It’s a billion-dollar industry that’s driven off of unpaid employees. Think of any established company that you’ve ever seen that didn’t pay their employees or the coverage of their employees when they put them out to work every single day.

What [Northwestern is] doing is incredible and I applaud them and I stand with them because they are taking the best route possible. It’s not just the money, they are talking about the long-term effects of football that some guys really still do feel.

Would you support NIU’s team taking similar measures to Northwestern?

Of course I would. I’m a Huskie for life.

Big sporting events ahead Very soon now we’ll join the millions who will be turning eyes toward Sochi and the Olympics.

Regrettably, there are serious threats, which will cause some to change travel plans.

Coverage of security measures may take time away from the color and pageantry of the events.

The games might have been scheduled for Chicago (how safe can you get?), but it was not to be.

Yet, there may be an opportunity at hand. Offer an alternative competition right here in the Fox Valley!

At such a late date, it may not be possible to replicate some of the traditional events. So, you might want to join the movement by suggesting some alternatives.

Ideas so far include pothole slalom, black ice speed skating, trash can bobsled, snow ball rolle bolle, and – the crowd-pleasers – public urination relays and legislator’s snow ball fights.

A former Aurora resident, Powell dove into the international

classical music world at age 18 as a violinist and spent her artistic life elevating the taste of Americans and exploiting the gramophone as a way to spread her music, according to a news release.

Powell was given the award in L.A. on Jan. 25, along with other notables, such as the Beatles and the Isley Brothers.

8NEIGHBORS BRIEF Bad weather increases need for doners Heartland Blood Centers is asking for immediate blood donations, as bad weather across the area continues to negatively impact the blood supply.

According to Heartland Blood Centers CEO Dennis Mestrich in a news release, approximately 2,000 units of blood have been lost in January due to the severe temperatures and an increase in illness-related cancellations.

Included in this number was the cancellation of some 21 mobile blood drives.

In order to rebuild the blood inventories that

Evo model of Mitsubishi Lancer sprints to glory If racing along interstates is your delight, then the Evolution (“Evo”) model of the Mitsubishi Lancer should be considered.

It can sprint, plus zig and zag, in controlled fashion with the best of the small road rockets. The Evolution looks the part, too, with an exaggerated rear spoiler, twin round tailpipe tips, wide performance tires on 18-inch alloy wheels, an aggressive black mesh grille, hood vents, front fog lights, side air dams and a low slung carriage.

The speed and looks come at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $34,995, not including a $795 delivery charge, for the GSR model. An MR model costs another $4,000 and differs in that it has bixenon and not halogen headlamps, a more inclusive sound system, a sixspeed automated transmission (with paddle shifters) instead of a five-speed manual, and Bilstein shock absorbers.

In media testing the Evo has sprinted from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.9 and 5 seconds.

Braking from 60 mph to a stop took 113 feet. These figures are impressive even when compared with V8 powerplants controlled by the most advanced of braking systems.

The GSR and MR share the same turbocharged, 2-liter, dual overhead cam, 291-horsepower, inline four-cylinder engine. The GSR’s slightly better performance time is due to a smoothly shifting five-speed manual. The MR has the dual clutch automated six-speed manual that functions as an automatic.

Brembo brakes are huge with 13.8-inch discs in front and 13-inch in the rear. The front discs are controlled by four-piston calipers and the rear ones by two pistons. It is little wonder that the braking distance on dry pavement is so short.

In fuel usage, a tested 2014 Evo GSR weighing 3,527 pounds averaged 19.3 miles per gallon. Driving was aggressive

back is not in the same class.

Besides the exterior looks, the car has an interior of Recaro leather and suede. The Evolution remains a four-door, five-passenger, four-cylinder compact sedan with several drawbacks. They are a small trunk (6.9 cubic feet), plastic trim on dashboard and door panels, and a steering wheel that tilts (manually) but does not telescope.

At a price of $35,000 to almost $40,000, the Evo is the most expensive in the Lancer lineup (ES, SE, GT, Ralliart, Evo), and this could act as a deterrent to ownership. An ES is half the price of an Evo. Convenience features on the Evo include power windows (express up and down for driver),

power door locks and unheated exterior mirrors. Front seats move manually. Cruise control and redundant audio switches are mounted on the steering wheel. Meter gauges are colorful and sporty.

Intermittent wipers, remote keyless entry, cruise control, air conditioning and dual visor vanity mirrors are standard, as are a 12-volt accessory, multiple cup and bottle holders, reading lights and a six-speaker sound system serving AM-FM-SiriusXM satellite radio, compact disc and MP3 players and a USB port.

Safety includes a four-wheel antilock braking system, traction and stability controls, tire pressure monitoring system, child seat tethers and anchors,

rear door child safety locks, seven air bags (front, sides, overhead, driver’s knee), and headrests accompanying seatbelts.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles and five years or 60,000 miles on the powertrain. Roadside assistance is provided for five years and unlimited mileage during that time.

Tuners might dress up the Evo with optional exterior trim pieces such as $107 chrome side mirror covers, $250 mud flaps and $900 side skirts. On the interior they might choose the optional $170 aluminum shift knob or the $290 aluminum and leather shift knob. An ash cup costs $25 and a cigar or cigarette lighter $36.

‘Gloria’: Making love and mistakes

By STEPHANIE MERRY The Washington Post Whether you’re 16 or 65, new relationships stir up the same sparks of excitement and the same lapses in judgment. That’s the gist of “Gloria,” the delightful Chilean drama about middle-age love between characters who have maturity on their side but still prove we’re all amateurs when it comes to relationships.

Paulina Garcia practically pops off the screen as Gloria, a woman whose bubbly buoyancy can’t quite mask her loneliness. Her two adult children don’t always call her back, but she stays busy with work and yoga. Most nights, she heads to the local disco where she usually ends up swaying solo on the dance floor, her sex appeal nearly obscured by oversized plastic glasses.

It’s there she meets Rodolfo (Sergio Hernandez), a recent divorcé who picks her up with the brightly disarming line, “Are you always this happy?”

Despite a fumbling first conversation, the buttoned-up businessman and Gloria quickly settle into a serious

relationship that includes dinner parties with friends and paintball target practice, passionate sex and poetry readings for two.

At first, things are easy. But while Gloria fully embraces new experiences and people, Rodolfo is cagey. He won’t even tell his two daughters he has a girlfriend. And before you know it, spiderweb cracks emerge in a foundation that seemed effortlessly solid.

With the exception of Nancy Meyers’ movies (“It’s Complicated,” “Something’s Gotta Give”), love stories about 50- and 60-year-olds are a rarity onscreen, and nudity with middle-aged actors is practically unheard of. We’re so used to seeing young, lithe bodies stripping down in movies that a glimpse of naked humans who look like actual people can be a little jarring. But there’s a point to writer-director Sebastian Lelio’s naturalism: Gloria and Rodolfo experience the same awkwardness and electric charge as any new couple, regardless of how many times they’ve been around the block.

The film’s great revelation is Garcia, who’s best known in her native

Chile for theater acting and directing.

She’s a master at conveying nuances of emotion. When Rodolfo takes a call on his cellphone during the middle of their first date, her firmly plastered smile imparts both an extreme effort to seem happy and a simmering annoyance.

Gloria is a complex person, and the movie takes its time revealing her.

Even a tiny scene of routine, where Gloria slathers on a thick veneer of night cream before bed, rounds out her character: She’s a woman who cares about her looks even while she hides behind huge glasses.

There are a few missteps in the movie, including a discordant moment of jealousy.

But for the most part, “Gloria” is a day brightener of a character study about finding someone new and making the same old mistakes.

• “Gloria” received three out of four stars. The film is rated R and contains sexual content, some graphic nudity, drug use and strong language. It is in Spanish with subtitles and runs 110 minutes.

Heart failure is manageable, sometimes unpredictable Dear Doctor K: My doctor says I have heart failure. Are there symptoms I should be looking out for that would indicate my condition is getting worse?

Dear Reader: The term “heart failure” is often misunderstood.

People think it means their heart is going to suddenly stop pumping. When that happens, that’s not “heart failure”; it’s a cardiac arrest – and it’s fatal unless the heart can be restarted. In heart failure, the heart continues to pump, but it’s just not pumping as efficiently as it needs to.

The heart does just one thing, but that thing is of life-or-death importance. It pumps blood to every cell in the body. The blood carries sources of energy (like oxygen and sugar) to each cell, and it carries away from each cell its waste products. That needs to happen constantly, every second of your life.

When the circulation of the blood is not as efficient as it should be, a person develops symptoms. The most common are fatigue, shortness of breath and swelling in the legs.

The fatigue and shortness of breath are caused by lower-than-normal levels of oxygen

And that’s caused by a failure of the kidneys to make as much urine as they should, due to the poor circulation of blood through them. Heart failure is often a manageable condition. Taking medications, balancing exercise and rest, following a low-sodium diet and being careful about fluid intake can help keep it in check.

But heart failure can be unpredictable. After a long stretch of being under control, it can flare up, and even require a hospital stay.

Sometimes these flare-ups come from out of the blue, caused by an infection or a medication.

Most of the time, though, they creep up, announcing themselves with subtle changes, such as

being more tired than usual or quickly gaining several pounds.

Call your doctor if you notice any of these warning signs of heart failure: • Sudden weight gain (2 to 3 pounds in one day or 5 or more pounds in one week). The extra weight comes from the buildup of fluid, not from extra fat.

• Increased swelling in the feet or ankles.

• Swelling or pain in the abdomen.

• Shortness of breath at rest, or increased shortness of breath with exercise.

• Discomfort or trouble breathing when lying flat.

• Waking up at night feeling short of breath, and having to sit up to catch your breath.

• Increased fatigue.

Most important, stay in close communication with your doctor and health care team. Together you can catch changes in your condition early and help avoid complications.

Dr. Wallace: Jose is 19, and I’m 18 and will graduate from high school this coming June. At that time, Jose and I plan to get married. I get good grades, but I don’t want to go to college. I want to be a wife and a mother.

Jose works for his uncle repairing automobiles.

He is very good at it and earns enough money to support a family.

I had planned to attend a community college for accounting and then, if all went well, transfer to Texas El Paso University, but love got in the way. My parents are unhappy that I will not be attending college because they are both professionals. My dad teaches at Texas El Paso University, and my mother is a principal of an elementary school.

Dr. Wallace, this guy is my true love and he feels the same about me. We have our minds made up, and nothing short of death will change our decision. Do you see anything that could be wrong with Jose and I becoming husband and wife this coming June or July? – Maria, El Paso, Tex. Dear Maria: I see nothing wrong with marrying Jose after you graduate as long as your marriage won’t disintegrate due to financial hardship. But I would also urge you not to give up on college. Marriage doesn’t bar you from taking college courses and pursuing a degree.

Dr. Wallace: I read your column all the time, and I’ve noticed letters from teens who are harassed and teased because they are overweight. I can’t help but remember the case of a 14-year-old girl who was overweight and was

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace called names by her own family. In fact, her father frequently called her a blimp and her brother referred to her as a whale.

I have the opposite problem. I’m 13 and have a very slender build. I do not have an eating disorder. I have a healthy appetite. It so happens that I also have a very high metabolism rate.

Because I’m slender, I’m often the butt of someone’s joke. I’ve been called Olive Oyl (Popeye’s girlfriend) as well as Slim, Bony, Skinny and Bean Pole.

My mother says I should ignore these rude comments, but I find that difficult to do. Probably the most irritating thing is to be called “skinny.”

Slender people dislike that tag the same way heavy people dislike “fatty.” I hope you print my letter. The slim people of the world will be grateful. When people are harassing me or making fun of me, I promised my mother I’d do my best to ignore them. But what do I say to those who call me “skinny,” but don’t realize it upsets me? – Beth, Louisville, Ky. Dear Beth: Simply say that instead of being referred to as “skinny,” you would prefer the term “slender.” Most people will respect your request. Of course, it’s difficult to be subjected to verbal harassment by ignorant people, but Mother is 100 percent correct. When you ignore these insensitive louts, they’ll eventually turn their attention elsewhere.

Daisy Donovan, an American-born English television presenter, actress and writer, said, “All Bridget Jones did was give us a word for it [living alone] – singleton – which was the worst possible thing.”

In bridge, though, being able to show a singleton is sometimes the best possible thing a player can do. Look at today’s North hand. After South opens one heart, what should North respond?

The North hand is strong enough to force to game. It contains 14 support points (11 highcard and three for the singleton, given the known nine-card or better fit) and only seven losers (the number for a raise to game).

If you use the Jacoby Forcing Raise, you could respond two no-trump, but it is much better to jump to four diamonds, a splinter bid announcing at least game-going values, four or more hearts and a singleton (or void) in diamonds.

That reduces South’s losers to three: one spade, one heart and one club. He now knows that, if necessary, he can ruff his low diamonds on the board. South then uses some form of Blackwood to find out that his partner has the missing aces and spade king (never splinter with a singleton king) and bids seven hearts. After West leads the diamond king, how should South plan the play?

The only danger is a 4-0 trump split. If East has all four hearts, declarer is down. But if West has them, South is safe as long as he starts with his trump king (or queen), keeping dummy’s ace and 10 over West’s jack.

When East shows out, declarer finesses in hearts through West and claims all the tricks via two spades, five hearts, one diamond and five clubs.
