POLICE PROBE DEATH IN GENEVA Few details emerge after death of 53-year-old man

GENEVA – Yellow tape surrounded a house Friday in the 0 to 100 block of Crissey Avenue, and police vehicles were parked near the home.

Officials were investigating the death of a 53-year-old man, Eduardo Gutierrez, but as of Friday evening, there were few details being released.

According to a news release from the Geneva Police Department, officials received a request for a well-being check Thursday and arrived at the home at 6:19 p.m. Thursday to find Gutierrez dead. His wife was home at the time, but police said the well-being call was made by someone who was not inside the home. Gutierrez’s wife was provided medical attention, “as standard protocol,” then taken to a local hospital for additional evaluation, according to the release.

and with the assistance of the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, the warrant was executed at 2:30 a.m. Friday.

Geneva police Cmdr. Julie Nash said the investigation continues to determine the cause of death. The release indicated that there was no one in custody.

“There is no reason to believe there is any danger to the public,” Nash said.

According to a news release issued by the Kane County Coroner’s Office, an autopsy was performed Friday at the Kane County Morgue, but the preliminary cause of death

When was the last time you played “Connect the Dots?”

I remember Grandma Erickson giving me a book of those kid-friendly puzzles, and spending hours under her dining room table – the best place to play, when you’re 4 – trying to find the “1,” then the “2,” and so on until, glory be! A picture would emerge: A snowman. A flower. An elephant.

Now, the cool thing about being a naturalist is that I get to play “Connect the Dots” even today – just not under the dining room table.

Other than that, the concept is the same; the steps are just a little more subtle.

Instead of having numbers, the “dots” are various elements in our environment.

Connecting them involves knowing a little bit about nature – the plants and animals around us – and how various actions and reactions affect them.

The final trick is being able to put them together in the right order, so that a clearer picture of what’s happening in our natural world begins to form.

Want to know why coyotes are so successful in our area? All you have to do is connect the dots.

Lately, the “dots” I’ve been working on have to do with coyotes.

Their breeding season is nearly upon us, and with it will come an increase in sightings. (Fun fact: Coyote-pet conflicts are not always hunger related. ’Yotes can view any canines, including domestic dogs, as threats to their future offspring and won’t hesitate to enforce territory boundaries.)

Some people are supportive; others are fearful.

Clearly, it’s time to connect some coyote dots, to see what sort of a picture forms.

But first, I need to add a couple of disclaimers.

One, I’m not trying to say coyotes are good, or coyotes

are bad. In nature, there is no good or bad; everything just “is.”

Second, I’m no expert. But I do have access to the Internet and know where to click.

Here in the Chicago area, we are fortunate to be part of one of the longest-running and most comprehensive studies of coyote behavior in urban and suburban environments, the Urban Coyote Research Project.

velopments have restrictions on where and how fences can be built. Meant to prevent eyesores and create open vistas, these rules simultaneously have created vast areas of open space where wildlife can travel unimpeded.

Now, this is not to say a coyote can’t scale a fence – they can and do, even clambering over 6-footers when particularly determined. But a complete lack of fences just makes roving that much easier. What makes it all even better? Many lot lines are delineated by trees and shrubs, which provide excellent cover for animals of all types.

Trash collection day. With the advent of waste haulers providing curbside toters with lids, garbage day is less of a boon for wildlife than it used to be.

But there still are those instances where lids go missing, cans get tipped, bags get torn; also, some people still use open bins for curbside recycling.

This refuse creates a smorgasbord of smells, as well as the possibility of free food.

If you want to see a coyote, drive around on garbage night.

Geneva teen’s ‘Idol’ run continues

alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kayla Mickelsen’s run on “American Idol” will continue into next week’s episodes. During a two-hour episode that aired Thursday night, Mickelsen was shown to have advanced past the group rounds. Mickelsen’s time on the air was brief, but she wrote in an email that she was happy with the way the group rounds went.

“Group rounds were so fun, and they’re notorious for being terrible,” she wrote. “However, I was blessed with such an amazing group and zero drama. I think that the lack of drama in our group is probably to blame for our lack of screen time.”

Volunteer named Batavia Citizen of the Year

asloboda@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Upon recognition as the 2015 Batavia Citizen of the Year, Joanne Spitz Friday said she will cherish the night forever, as it is a “tremendous honor.”

However, she made it clear from the start of her speech that Joanne Spitz her recognition isn’t hers alone.

“It’s not an evening about me. It’s an evening about we,” Spitz told the crowd gathered at the Lincoln Inn for the Batavia Chamber of Commerce’s annual awards dinner. “Nothing I do is done alone.”

She said that the event, titled “Inspire 2015, A Celebration of Those Who Inspire Us,” is named what it is for a good reason.

“You all inspire me,” Spitz said.

“Joanne has spent the last 20 years tirelessly volunteering,” McNally said.

Several Batavia businesses also were honored at the event.

Seven received the Ole Award in recognition of their contributions to the improvement of Batavia: Challenger Lighting, Emergent Safety Supply, Wendy’s, Crosstown Pub, Aldi Inc., Chicago Expert Importers and BP Pride Oil. Because the committee choosing the award winners were impressed with the quality of projects completed the past year, four other businesses received recognition.

Bradley Olsen’s mother to speak at missing persons memorial

ksmith@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Sue Olsen’s worst fear came true when her 26-year-old son disappeared from a DeKalb bar and never came home.

Now, nine years after Bradley Olsen’s disappearance, his mother continues to line the streets with his photograph and the question that has never left her: “Do you know what happened to Bradley?”

“This is unbelievable,” Sue Olsen said. “Days and weeks and months and years just turn into your worst night-

mare.”

On Sunday, Sue Olsen will join the families of missing people across Illinois as they mourn the 20th anniversary of Rachel Marie Mellon Skemp’s disappearance. The then-13year-old was last known to be at her Bolingbrook home in 1996. The gathering will take place at BJ Ward Elementary School, 200 Recreation Drive, Bolingbrook, and will include a balloon release and a reading of the names of 200 missing people, including Bradley Olsen.

“Just imagine waking up and coming home, and realiz-

ing that your loved one is gone, and you can’t find them,” Sue Olsen said.

In 2010, DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Miller issued a presumptive death certificate for Bradley Olsen, at the family’s request. But police have never stopped looking into his disappearance and regularly get new information, the case’s lead detective, DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said.

“We’re still looking into the case. We’re still interviewing people,” he said. “We’re constantly getting tips. Every month, every month and a half, somebody will call with

information that we’ll look into.”

Sue Olsen will speak at the memorial Sunday, along with Casandra Cales, whose sister, Stacy, has been missing since 2007, Shelia Bradley-Smith, whose two nieces, Diamond and Tionda, have been missing from Chicago since 2001; Amy Michelle McGinn, whose father has been missing from Bolingbrook since 1996; Jeff Skemp, Rachelle’s Marie Mellon Skemp’s father; and Sharonrose Zane-Neu, whose sister, April, has been missing from Frankfurt since 1977.

“People of all ages, all races,

color, creed – everybody goes missing,” Sue Olsen said. “It could happen to any family.”

Every poster, billboard and banner she erects in his memory has gotten her one step closer to finding the truth about her son’s disappearance, she said.

Redel encourages anyone with information and Bradley Olsen or any other missing person to come forward, no matter the circumstance.

“The public can help so much with these cases,” Sue Olsen said. “Don’t ever think that any little bit of information is not big enough to help.”

There was police activity at the home during the day, but the area was quiet by late morning. A woman who lives near the house, on Oak

Street, said the scene had been busier through Thursday night and early Friday.

By Friday morning, there were TV news helicopters flying overhead, and streets had been blocked off in the area, she said.

The neighbor described

the activity as “a shock.” She said she had known the couple to be friendly and helpful.

She said they would help neighbors rake leaves and perform other yard work.

She said they were longtime residents of the area, having lived there for more than 15

years. She said the couple was “as sweet as sweet could be.”

“That is a shock,” she said of all of the activity at the house and the death investigation, though she added, “we really don’t know what went on.”

In a news release, Kane County Auditor Terry Hunt this week announced that the P-card transaction report is available on the growing library of financial information at www.KaneCountyIL.OpenGov.com.

Fox River Fire Chief DeLeo resigns

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District board of trustees this week accepted the resignation of its fire chief, Carl DeLeo. Board attorney Kenneth Shepro said DeLeo resigned via email Thursday, and the board unanimously accepted the resignation that night at its meeting.

Shepro said it was the third time DeLeo resigned since he was hired in September.

DeLeo replaced the previous chief, Greg Benson, who retired in October 2015.

“It’s more of a pressure-filled position than he anticipated,” board President Robert Handley said. “We wish him well. We don’t have any ill will.”

DeLeo said he would not comment about his resignation.

“The plan [DeLeo] put together is essentially a sound plan, and I presume we will implement it or some version thereof,” Handley said. “I’d love to have them all full-time with benefits and the works, but to have full-time benefits, you have to pay more than 27 cents (per) $100 (equalized assessed valuation) while [other fire districts] are paying $1 per $100 or $1.10 per $100.”

staffing model is necessary because residents voted against a proposed tax increase referendum. In December, the board decided not to seek another referendum.

“You can’t have a gourmet meal at a McDonald’s price,” Handley said. “I want to get us as good a service as we can get with taxpayer money, and that has been our goal since Day One.” District officials will either have a captain take over or get an interim chief until they can hire a new chief, Handley said.

“We’ve had some inquiries already,” Handley said.

Just ask a Batavia elementary school student.

The students were the teachers Thursday evening as Batavia School District 101 hosted a Tech Luau at J.B. Nelson School.

Nearly 60 students demonstrated their technical skills to adults who frequently were dumbfounded by what they saw.

“The students are making the decisions about what to present,” said Hoover-Wood School teacher Theresa Fontana. “It’s good to see them take ownership of their projects.”

ST. CHARLES – Cassie Yankula cuts hair for a living at Great Clips in Campton Hills. However, in April, she will have her brunette locks completely shorn off to raise money for St. Baldrick’s, a charity that funds pediatric cancer research.

“Can’t wait to participate April 2,” the Maple Park resident posted on her Facebook page.

“I’m doing it because I feel like childhood cancer isn’t talked about as much as adult cancer and needs more awareness,” said Yankula, 23.

In the message on her St. Baldrick’s fundraising page, Cassie Braves The Shave, she expands on that: “Being a hairdresser who sees so many people, not only in my own chair, but in the salon in general, I felt that going bald would be a great way to get that conversation started!”

Yankula had raised $270 toward her $3,000 goal as of Friday afternoon, according to her fundraising page – but there is still time to raise money for the event to be held at Alley 64, 212 W. Main St., St. Charles.

This is the fourth year April Schippers of Montgomery organized the St. Baldrick’s event in honor of her son, Isaac, who was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma in 2011, when he was 5.

“It’s the most common form of brain cancer in children,” said Schippers, a first-grade teacher at Davis Elementary School in St. Charles School District 303.

“He had brain surgery, 30 days of radiation to his brain and spine, and nine rounds of chemo. He’s been clear since the day of surgery.”

Isaac is one of five children chosen as an ambassador for St. Baldrick’s, she said.

“We’ve raised $113,000 over the last three years,” Schippers said.

Enough said.

Ground-level decks. Thousands of homes in our area have these adjuncts, which are great for entertaining and often function as additional living space.

But if their sides aren’t protected by heavy-gauge hardware cloth, buried a foot underground, they also will function as a ready-made shelter for anything from rodents, opossums and skunks to feral cats, red foxes and more.

These animals can be both directly and indirectly linked to coyotes.

Bird feeders. Who doesn’t love to see birds feeding on seeds, nuts and suet? But birds are only one of many critters taking advantage of these offerings.

All the animals that might

be inclined to live under a ground-level deck, plus deer and raccoons and, yes, even coyotes themselves, can find something to eat at a wellstocked feeding station.

Vegetable gardens. With all the focus on eating locally produced foods, more and more people are growing their own vegetables. Although some of these gardens are fenced, many others are not. More free food! Rabbits, especially, like to graze in gardens. And guess what animal accounts for a high percentage of coyote diets? Yup, bunnies.

Feral and outdoor cats. In short, the Tri-Cities have many, many feral cats. We also have many, many people who let their pet cats outside.

Either way, there are many, many porches, decks and garages with bowls of cat food on them.

Sometimes, it’s this food that acts as a lure for coyotes, and sometimes it’s the cats themselves.

Okey doke, I think that’s enough dots for now.

When you connect them, you see we’ve created acres of barrier-free open space that comes with a bonus of vegetative cover.

We’ve supplemented this space with weather-proof shelter, and plentiful food that is free for the taking – with no gunshots to fear.

The next time you hear someone saying we have too many coyotes and that something has to be done, maybe you could offer up a few of these dots, connecting them as needed.

Maybe even add a few of your own. The picture that emerges will show the ideal conditions we humans have created. Can you really blame coyotes for taking advantage of such paradise?

Curing cancer requires easier access to genetic data BLOOMBERG VIEW Vice President Joe Biden’s yearlong push to cure cancer by marshaling the resources of the federal government no doubt will involve every kind of cancer study and devote much effort to bringing new investment – public and private – to the work. In one critical corner of cancer research, however, a lot of progress could be made with little new spending, if Biden would help clear a few obstacles.

This is the effort to learn more about which of the so-called variant genes in human DNA cause cancers to start growing.

Knowing this, medical scientists could better tell who is at risk and how to prevent and treat the disease. Today, researchers know only a fraction of those variant genes because they lack access to crucial genetic data. Biden could help them get the information they need.

Oncologists typically gather data from just a small share of their patients, and usually only about the tumors themselves, which – in turn – offers only a small share of the genetic information scientists could use. By sequencing more of the genetic code (or even the entire genome) of more people with cancer, doctors could get a clearer view of the variant genes involved.

Insurance companies, which typically only cover the genetic sequencing of tumors, would have to pay for gathering this additional data. But if Medicare paid for more genetic testing, private insurers undoubtedly would follow.

The next challenge is to make it easier for researchers to gather that data. The main hurdle here is a 2002 federal rule that prevents patients’ medical data being released without their consent, or unless certain conditions are met. The idea was – and is – to protect patients’ privacy. An update to the rule could make clear that hospitals and doctors’ offices are legally able to share patients’ genetic data with researchers.

Patient privacy still would be a concern, of course, so expanding access to the genetic data would need to be paired with steps to better shield people from having that data used against them. Stricter penalties for data breaches would help, although no system is airtight. And the categories of prohibited genetic discrimination would have to be expanded.

A 2008 law prevents health insurers and employers from discriminating against people based on genetic information.

Insurers writing policies to cover life, disability and long-term care should face the same restriction, because in these areas the risk of unequal treatment through no fault of one’s own is just as great.

Another barrier to getting cancer researchers the data they need is logistical: Electronic health records often are incompatible. That means that even when doctors or researchers want to share information, they can’t easily send it along; these data sets can be massive and thus difficult to dispatch via fax or email. Congress could help here by setting higher standards of interoperability for health-data software.

Since Biden’s “moonshot” was announced, many correctly have pointed out that a cure to cancer is unlikely this year.

But the vice president can bring medical science a big step closer to the goal.

Talking turf The play is in the playbook.

Batavia School District 101 approved a plan Tuesday night that calls for the installation of an artificial turf field at Batavia High School. The plan also calls for the resurfacing of the stadium track that circles the playing field.

Cost for construction?

About $1.4 million.

The vote in favor was a shutout – 7-0. Now it’s time to execute the game plan.

A pledge of $500,000 over five years has been made by the Batavia Bulldog Boosters.

Additional funding will come from monies the district already had budgeted for the track resurfacing, as well as other areas.

While there had been some opposition to this type of project in the past, the plan now is moving for-

ward. At this point, how can the community help?

The booster organization will continue to raise funds. It is prepared to donate $200,000 this spring and another $300,000 over the next three to five years, according to club president Bill Hilliard.

District 101 residents can contribute to the cause or be on the lookout for volunteer opportunities to help the Batavia Bulldog Boosters group in its quest to raise money.

Although the boosters already have aligned a mighty offense, they could face a challenging defense in some areas.

The economy is ever-so-slowly recovering, and many people still are being conservative with their personal finances.

In addition, voters in 2014 soundly defeated

District 101’s $15 million capital improvement referendum – a decent chunk of those referendum funds were slated to be used for the installation of a synthetic turf field at Bulldog Stadium and adding a second multi-use synthetic turf field.

Although it may take time for the booster club to raise what it has pledged toward the project, district officials have noted that working cash funds would cover the club’s pledge over the next three to five years.

Come Sept. 16, area residents very likely could see the Batavia Bulldogs football team taking a new synthetic field. Physical education classes and other school groups will be able to use the field as well, such as soccer teams and the marching band.

There I was, living in my own home in Creston, IL and managing just fine. I had my good friends, my loving family and a home I enjoyed. Then it happened. One day you wake up and you think to yourself, “Hey. I’m not as young as I used to be.”

It kind of sneaks up on you and before you know it you start considering what the options might be as you face those big Charlotte Berg retirement decisions. My children live out of state and I knew that I wanted to stay near my friends, church and my community activities so my search began. I already had some dear friends living at Oak Crest and after visiting decided that the on-site availability of health care, location and surroundings were the perfect fit for me. Now, I was faced with the dilemma of making the decision to actually move.

So, I called up Oak Crest with some pretty specific requests. I wanted an apartment on third floor, looking north, near my cousin. Feeling pretty confident that my requests would not be easily filled, I sat back and relaxed. Imagine my surprise when mere weeks later I received a call telling me that my every wish was granted. I moved in and have to tell you I couldn’t be happier. I enjoy my apartment; I love my neighbors and I can participate in any number of events and activities throughout the day. As my Oak Crest neighbors and I say, “Be careful what you wish for at Oak Crest, because they just might come true.”

NEW YEAR, SAME EXPECTATIONS Kane County Cougars excited for second year with Diamondbacks

ccasey@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County Cougars brought in the beginning to another season, which happens to be the team’s 25th anniversary, with its “Meet the Diamondbacks” night Friday night.

The Cougars welcomed in first-year manager Mike Benjamin, Arizona Diamondbacks Vice President/Special Assistant to the General Manager Bob Gebhart, and Diamondbacks Director of Player Development Mike Bell to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Though not brand new to baseball – coaching the Rookie League AZL Diamondbacks and serving 13 years in the Major Leagues – Benjamin is certainly optimistic and excited about the opportunity he’s been given.

“I like it here a lot,” Benjamin said. “I’m definitely looking forward to this opportunity and getting things started.”

Just because the Cougars saw a first-round exit in the Midwest League playoffs this past season, owner Dr. Bob Froelich still said he considered the Cougars the “best team in the Midwest League.”

He wasn’t the only one excited and thrilled about the way the organization’s first year as an affiliate of the Diamondbacks went.

“We were really excited about coming here,” said Gebhart, who enters his 52nd year working in baseball (12 with the Diamondbacks). “I really think it worked out great. Dr. Bob and (wife) Cheryl, (General Manager Curtis Haug) and the entire staff treated our players like we hoped they would. We were happy with having went 30 games over .500. We wish we would have walked away with a ring, but these kids are our future and it’s so important that they get to play at a place like Kane County.”

Cougars fans get a fairly complete rebuild of the roster from year-to-year. With promotions and newly drafted players, the Cougars have a new look on a yearly basis. Though anyone wearing a Cougars uniform will look different with a complete logo rebranding taking place in the offseason.

Bell was able to shed some light on the early expectations of what type of players Cougars fans can expect to see donning those new-look uniforms.

“You’ll probably see a lot of (Short-A Hillsboro) guys here,” Bell said. “There is going to be very good, young

pitching here, especially starting. As far as position players go, you’ll see some Hillsboro guys and maybe a few repeat guys from last year. But a lot of people down here do a good job of finding guys, whether it be from the Independent League or what have you.

“We’ll continue to look at things as needs become evident, but you want to put together teams that are going to win as many games as possible.”

Winning has been something that the Cougars and its fan base have become accustomed to, especially over the last couple of seasons. Despite

that first-round exit in the Midwest League playoffs last season, the Cougars did finish as one of the better teams in the MWL a season after winning the league’s title in 2014.

With that winning tradition, Benjamin is happy to be part of an organization that not only wins, but provides resources with the experience of Gebhart, or former St. Louis Cardinals manager and current Diamondbacks Chief Baseball Officer Tony La Russa.

“We sat down with Tony in a meeting that was supposed to be 15 minutes, and two hours later we were still

taking notes,” Benjamin said with a laugh. “It was really great for me being a first-time manager last year ... to hear his thoughts and how he went about things. These guys have been around the game for a long time, so talking with them has been a big help for me.”

The results will show once April 7’s season opener swings around, but it was safe to say when Gebhart and Bell left Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Friday night that they felt proud and a continued excitement to have the Kane County Cougars as its Class-A affiliate.

East dominant in victory over North Saints shut out North Stars in final dual of regular season

editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – It was all St. Charles East Friday night in its last dual wrestling meet of the season against crosstown rival St. Charles North.

The Saints shut out the North Stars, 74-0, in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual.

East also secured sole possession of first place in the River Division with the win.

Standings are based on teams’ division dual meet record.

The Saints finished with a perfect 6-0 mark.

“Our goal this year was to win our side of the conference,” East coach Jason Potter said. ”We fell short last year.”

The host North Stars, who only have 11 wrestlers on their roster, were unable to field a full slate of wrestlers and forfeited at six weight classes (106 pounds, 126, 182, 220 and 285).

“Obviously it’s a challenge. We work hard with the kids that we have and try to prepare them as best as we can,” North coach Ben Hummel said. “East has a really good team and some of their best kids are at our best kids’ weight classes.”

East wrestlers won three matches with pins.

Ben Anderson won at 120 pounds with a fall at the 4:51 mark.

Senior DJ McDermott took the 152-pound match on a pin with 58 seconds left in the first period.

“East (and) North is a rivalry and we really wanted to come out, dominate and get the shut out,” McDermott said. “And that’s what we did.”

Teammate Malik Hatch earned the third fall of the night with a second period pin at 3:46.

The North Stars’ best opportunities were in the 145and 195-pound matches.

East senior wrestler 145-pound match. The sophomore tied it up 3-3 in the second period. Testa led briefly in the third period with an escape, but Derain earned a near fall to prevail, 5-4.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first period of the 195-pound contest, North junior Spencer Binning pulled ahead of East’s Drew Conn in

the second round, 3-2, with an escape and a takedown. Conn earned a reverse in the last frame to win the match, 4-3.

“We have a week to practice before next week’s regional and try to get better and hopefully those one-point losses will turn into wins,” Hummel said.

In a quirk of scheduling, East and North had their last dual after the conference meet, which was held last weekend. Batavia edged out East for the conference meet title. Potter had no concerns about last week’s loss causing a letdown on Friday.

“If anything I knew it would be the opposite,” Potter said “We knew we would be fine tonight. Our guys were motivated by not coming through last week, especially our seniors.”

Coffey, Bulldogs hold off Streamwood

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – When the Batavia boys basketball team has needed a clutch basket this season, it has turned to its senior guard Canaan Coffey, and Friday night was no different.

Coffey was on fire in the fourth quarter against Streamwood and his 28 points and six 3-pointers were Canaan enough to hold Coffey off the Sabres, 54-52, in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division contest.

“He had a big game and we needed it. It just seems that way. If we’re in a dogfight, you look up and see that he’s got whatever he’s at,” Batavia head coach Jim Nazos said. “It’s one of those games, late January, where we just found a way to win. If we’re going to be the team we want to be, you’ve got to do that from time to time.”

Streamwood had a chance to tie the game with Jake McGlone at the free throw line, trailing by two with 0.8 seconds remaining. McGlone,

Leading by one with 6.2 seconds left, Coffey nailed the first of two free throws for his 28th point of the night – a season-high – but missed the second foul shot. McGlone collected the rebound and was fouled after going coast-tocoast before coming up short at the free throw line.

“We knew going in that they were going to be a tough team. They hang through with teams and that’s exactly what we had tonight,” Coffey said. “But we came out the tougher team in the end.”

With the performance, Coffey is now only 24 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

He’ll have a chance to eclipse the milestone Saturday night when Batavia hosts Lake Zurich.

“To see the finish line right now is really cool,” Coffey said. “I can’t really worry about it though, just have to keep playing the game as it is.”

“I looked at my assistant coach at the time and said, ‘That’s going to bite us in the butt,’” Streamwood head coach Paul Kowalyszyn said.

“We’ve seen it happen over and over. That’s what kills

you. You have opportunities and it’s a heart-breaker. I know the kids are going to be devastated.”

Streamwood (4-21, 1-7) got a monster performance from Jenkins on the offensive glass as the senior finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while guard Joey O’Halloran added 17 points.

From the very start, it appeared as if it was going to be a classic performance from Coffey, an Illinois Wesleyan commit. He scored the first eight points for Batavia, including a pair of 3’s.

Coffey really got hot in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs found themselves in a dogfight. He drilled a three from the top of the key with 5:38 left to tie the game at 40, then two more threes on back-to-back possessions in a 23-second span to give Bata-

On the girls side, the Vikings hosted Larkin, defeating the Royals handily, 82-45, in a UEC River contest.

The game was tied at 38 after three quarters.

‘Hairspray’ gets audience on its feet “You can’t stop the beat!” No kidding, not if Tracy Turnblad has anything to say about it.

The bubbly, guileless teenager is played by the perfectly-cast Amelia Jo Parish, who shines in director Amber Mak’s musical “Hairspray - The Broadway Musical,” playing through Feb. 21 at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora.

Set in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1962, “Hairspray,” based on the John Waters’ hit film of the same name, depicts the struggle of one bubbly teenager’s wishes to realize her own dream of dancing on “The Corny Collins Show,” the popular television dance showcase.

While naturally preoccupied with nursing an age-appropriate crush on a handsome regular in the show, Link Larkin (Henry McGinniss), the plus-size Tracy ends up an overnight sensation and anti-establishment activist for racial justice, too.

“I’m all for integration,” the irrepressible Tracy announces.

Fortunately for my daughter, who is slightly less fond of public displays of enthusiasm than I am, I wasn’t alone on my feet by the performance’s end. We can all be grateful for that.

The researchers estimated the CRP tests would have prevented only one heart attack or stroke for every 400 to 500 people screened. In other words, the CRP test added little information about cardiovascular disease risk in the average person, beyond what the standard risk factors already showed.

Several authoritative groups recommend the test be performed in people who are at intermediate risk for heart disease based on other risk factors: high blood pressure (hypertension), smoking, high levels of LDL cholesterol, diabetes, or close relatives who have developed heart disease at a young age.

The logic in this recommendation is straightforward. If you are at high risk, according to these other risk factors, knowing your CRP level won’t change your doctor’s advice. I’m a good example. I am at higher risk than the average person my age for a heart attack, and my CRP level was normal. But if I had used that as an excuse not to follow a healthy lifestyle, I’d have been unwise.

And if you are at low risk, according to these other risk factors, finding you have a high CRP level won’t lead to any additional testing or treatment that is likely to help protect you. But if you’re at intermediate risk, knowing your CRP level can be valuable.

Dr.Wallace: I’m in the 10th grade and I like school and get good grades. The only activity I participate in is French Club, which meets after school for an hour once a month. During the meeting we speak only French (or try to) and watch films about the French culture and history. I really enjoy the French Club and learn a lot.

When my mother was in high school, she was very active. She was a cheerleader, president of the pep club, student body vice-president, and a lot more. She also participated in team sports. Dear Dr. K: Both my parents had heart disease, so I’m worried I might get it. A friend said I should get a CRP test, but my doctor hasn’t ordered one.

Should I ask him about the test?

Dear Reader: The answer is controversial.

For full transparency, I should say that this test was developed and studied by a colleague of mine at Harvard Medical School, and revenue from the test comes to my colleague and to the hospital where I practice.

The C-reactive protein (CRP) blood test measures inflammation in the body.

What does that have to do with heart disease? We now know many heart attacks and strokes occur because cholesterol-rich plaques of atherosclerosis rupture. When that happens, blood clots form that can cut off the blood supply to part of the heart or brain. Plaques rupture because of inflammation inside them.

Like most tests, the CRP test is valuable in some people, but not all. A valuable test is one that tells us there is value in taking some particular action: having an additional diagnostic test, taking a particular treatment or adopting a healthy lifestyle.

A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2012 found that checking CRP levels may not be valuable in the average person. (And, unless you are from Lake Wobegon, there is a chance that you are an average person.) The review article looked at 52 studies that included 240,000 people. The researchers added the CRP results to standard risk factors, such as diabetes or high cholesterol. Using all of this information, they classified people by

Today’s deal is an example of that.

How did South plan the play in five clubs after West led the heart king?

South’s bidding left something to be desired.

Ideally, North-South would have ended in three no-trump, which would have made with at least one overtrick.

Over two hearts, South should have cue-bid two spades to show a very strong hand.

Then, when North in desperation rebid three clubs, South could have cue-bid three spades to ask for a spade stopper.

North, if a trusting partner, would have bid three no-trump – mission accomplished.

South starts with 10 top tricks: one heart, two diamonds and seven clubs.

He must take a spade trick – but how?

Declarer wins with his heart ace, draws trumps, and pauses to consider the spade situation.

He knows from the bidding that the suit is either 5-1 or 6-0. If it is 6-0, playing low to dummy’s queen works fine. If the split is 5-1, that is also successful if East’s singleton spade is at best the jack.

But if East has the spade ace or king, South must duck the first spade trick. Which is the right play, and why?

Remember the opening lead: If West had started with the spade aceking and heart king-queen, he would have led the spade ace, not the heart king. So South should lead a spade from his hand and play low from the dummy.

Misc. Bags & Boxes Additional special unit cost - the City is requesting a time and equipment rate, per day, for cable removal and scrapping from an existing duct bank. The deliverable for this work is that the cable is pulled out of the duct, mule tape installed in the duct, and the scrap cable piled up in an assigned area at the Public Works facility. The City would provide a crew to cut the cable in the manhole and attach the contractor's pulling means. The Contractor will not be required to enter a confined space. City will procure any required ROW permits, and will provide flaggers should lanes need to be blocked. Contractor is responsible for other traffic control and protection. The preferred method of removal would be the utilization of a specialized piece of equipment that pulls the cable out, chops it in pieces a few feet long, and drops it into a dump truck. The pieces of scrap cable would be transported to our Public Works facility and dumped in a specially assigned area. Alternatively, a Contractor could pull out using other means and coil or chop, and then load and deliver. Using the special equipment cable chopper, the work is estimated to take 15 days. The City may choose to award this part of the work to a different contractor than the substation work. The City expects this work to be done in April or May, 2016.
