‘Let the Good Times Bowl’

WHAT: The St. Charles Mothers’ Club will have a bowling fundraiser, “Let the Good Times Bowl.” It is an event sponsored by the club, a nonprofit service organization, to provide funding to women, children and families in need in the Fox Valley area. Experts ‘cautiously optimistic’ at 2015 Economic Forecast

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Business and city leaders in Kane County on Thursday said there were a number of indicators that showed positive signs for the economy in 2015.

“I am cautiously optimistic about the economy for a variety of reasons,” said Rita Tungare, director of community and economic development for the city of St. Charles.

Tungare was one of six panelists at the 2015 Economic Forecast, held Thursday at the Q Center, 1405 N. Fifth St., St. Charles. The event, hosted by the Kane County Chronicle, aimed to give the roughly 165 attendees insight into where the economy is headed and the biggest opportunities and challenges the panelists see facing their industries.

Many of the panelists said they look to the unemployment rate as an indicator of where the economy is headed. The unemployment rate in Chicago is trending down compared to 2013, said Mike Lee, the event’s keynote speaker and president and CEO of KCT Credit Union.

Don Cummings, founder of Blue Haven Capital LLC and a Geneva alderman, said he looks to unemployment, interest rates and taxation.

Although Cummings is worried a change in revenues will affect housing and education, he said some businesses appear to be faring well. A few contractors told the city they had too many jobs to bid on a recent Geneva project, Cummings said.

The panelists did concede that some sectors, such as manufacturing, never will recover from the economic downtown. They spoke about how manufacturing jobs have moved from within the country to Mexico, China and now southeast Asia.

To counter a sluggish economy, Lee offered several guiding principles that helped turned things around at KCT Credit Union since he took over there about 18 months ago. The principles included change, networking, branding and more.

“We can make Kane County economic proof,” Lee said.

“We can have people live their lives right and have the security of financial freedom.”

SUPER BOOST AT ROSARY Booster club aims to replace burned bus with funds raised from Super Bowl party

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com Mary Lou Kunold said a November call to her phone went something like this: “We’re by the outlet mall – the bus is on fire,” Bill Schalz, Rosary High School girls swimming coach, said to Kunold, Rosary’s athletic director, during the call.

That bus was one of four used by Rosary High School’s athletic department to take students to and from events. During a return trip from a state swim competition, a rod on the bus blew out, oil splattered and flames were seen from outside the front of the bus, Kunold said.

Rosary students and staff escaped safely, but the bus did not. The Rosary High School Boosters hope they can raise enough money to replace it at the 35th annual Super Bowl party Sunday at the Turf Room, 1033 Kilbery Lane, North Aurora.

“This is our biggest event of the year,” said Mike Haddad, the booster club’s vice president.

The booster club will have all of the Turf Room to itself for the party, where paying guests will watch the big game throughout the building on more than 25 HDTVs, some of which will be specially placed in the restaurant just for the event, said Parker Grabowski, the Turf Room’s owner.

The booster’s previous Super Bowl party at the Turf Room in 2014 was too crowded at 320 people, so this year organizers have capped the event at 280 tickets, Haddad said.

Haddad said there were about 50 tickets left as of Thursday afternoon, and today is the last day to make reservations online at rosaryhs.com/superbowl. Tickets will not be sold at the door on Sunday, Haddad

Between reservations, specially named “super tickets” that will replace a traditional raffle and board squares, the club hopes to raise enough to replace the bus. A brand-new bus will cost between $50,000 and $55,000, so the school might consider trying to buy two used buses instead depending on their condition and the funds raised, Kunold said.

The remaining funds will go toward the club’s ongoing donations to the school’s athletic department.

Booster members decades ago came up with the idea of a Super Bowl party to raise money for the school. The party was held on school grounds until the event became too big for the space, Kunold said.

“It finally grew to the point that there was a TV between every table,” she said.

Some of the booster club’s members are Turf Room patrons, so they suggested it could be the next Super Bowl party site. Turf Room owner Parker Grabowski was happy to oblige.

staff and bartenders volunteer their time during the party. The Turf Room benefits from the party, as well, because people from many different communities get to experience the restaurant, he said.

The club’s 2014 Super Bowl party – its first at the Turf Room – raised about $45,000, Haddad said. The club’s first-ever Super Bowl party at the school raised between $7,000 and $8,000.

“We want to see them do better than last year,” Grabowski said of the booster club’s efforts.

GENEVA – In honor of Valentine’s Day, Chef Alain Roby of the All Chocolate Kitchen in Geneva has added a new candy sculpture to his repertoire.

Made out of 948 pounds of white chocolate and sugar, “Eros” – the god of love – was sculpted for Food Network’s “Outrageous Foods” program, set to air Feb. 7. The completed statue was unveiled Monday, according to a news release.

To honor the occasion, All Chocolate Kitchen will host a viewing party at 3 p.m. Feb. 8 for the Food Network segment.

During the event, guests can catch a behind-the-scenes look at the making of “Eros,” and take pictures with Roby and his newest chocolate creation.

Judge orders primary election in Campton Hills

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com A Kane County judge Thursday cleared a path for six Campton Hills candidates, including two writein candidates, to be part of a Feb. 24 primary election.

Judge David Akemann ordered that the candidate certification submitted by the village Jan. 5 be accepted as if it had been filed Dec. 18, the date by which candidates had to be certified for the primary.

Akemann also ordered the primary election be held and that Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham comply with election law as closely as possible with the time remaining.

The Kane County Clerk’s office estimated that holding a Feb. 24 primary will cost about $140,000, a figure that was disputed by some of the

other attorneys involved in the case. Akemann asked that Cunningham find ways to reduce the cost of the primary to the public.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Joe Lulves, the office’s civil division chief, represented Cunningham at the hearing.

Lulves had no comment about possible cost-saving measures after the hearing because he said the ruling had just occurred, and he referred a Kane County Chronicle reporter to the County Clerk’s office.

Four of the six candidates who attended the hearing were pleased with Akemann’s ruling. In a separate January proceeding, the Campton Hills Electoral Board upheld the petitions of four candidates who filed for the primary in November when they were challenged by current village President

Patsy Smith.

“We didn’t anticipate [the legal battles], but you just kind of have to deal with things as they come up,” said Harry Blecker, one of the challenged candidates.

Blecker, a current Campton Hills trustee and candidate for village president, and three trustee hopefuls – incumbents Laura Andersen and Sue George and newcomer Michael O’Dwyer – filed court papers Jan. 16, asking a judge to give Cunningham specific orders so their candidacies could be recognized.

John Strauss, the Campton Hills interim village clerk, did not turn in the candidate certifications until Jan. 5, the first weekday after the Campton Hills Election Board ruled in favor of four candidates on Jan. 2.

Attorney Mark Schuster, who represented Strauss at the hearing, said Strauss had

no bad intentions in the matter.

Akemann on Monday allowed one of the village’s write-in candidates, Steven Galloway, to intervene as a party in the proceedings over Lulves’ objection. He also summoned the only other write-in candidate, Nicholas Girka, to the proceedings.

Girka, who is running as a write-in candidate for village clerk, spoke on his own behalf Thursday, since he was not represented by an attorney.

“I turn to your wisdom and understanding,” Girka said to Akemann during the Thursday hearing. “The names of those who wish to run for office should be on the ballot.”

Akemann also asked that the County Clerk’s office make him aware of any issues in regards to conducting the primary.

Batavia consultant pleads guilty to DUI Aiston will serve 3 weekends in jail as part of plea agreement

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Batavia Economic Development Consultant Chris Aiston on Thursday pleaded guilty to an amended count of driving under the influence of alcohol, a misdemeanor, as part of a plea agreement.

Aiston, 56, of Geneva, had been charged with felony DUI after a crash took place at 11:21 p.m.

Jan. 22, 2014, in the 1500 block of East State Street, Geneva. As p a r t o f t h e Chris Aiston plea agreement, Aiston will have to serve three consecutive weekends in the Kane County Jail, pay a $2,200 fine and complete treatment for alcohol abuse.

He also must attend a victim panel about the consequences of drunken driving.

This was his third DUI arrest. Aiston was convicted of DUI for a 1986 offense in DuPage County and in 2000 for an offense in DeKalb County, according to Illinois Secretary of State spokesman Dave Druker. Aiston’s driver’s license later was reinstated in both cases.

Aiston apologized for the events leading up for his arrest last year.

“It was an inexcusable error in judgment by deciding to drive home after dinner where I consumed alcohol,” he said. “Frankly, I’m

ashamed of it. It’s been a year, and I’ve learned a great deal from it, I believe. I thank God that nobody was hurt.”

Aiston said he knows his license could be revoked. But Aiston said if that happens, he still would be able to fulfill his duties as economic development consultant for Batavia.

“I fully expect to be able to do my job in accordance with my contract,” he said. “And that’s my intention.”

According to the accident report, Aiston was driving west in the curb lane in the 1500 block of East State Street, approaching Kirk Road, when he attempted to stop but slid on the slush on the road and rear-ended another car, causing that car to rear end a third car.

He recently sent a letter to Batavia aldermen offering to resign if they requested it.

That hasn’t happened.

The Batavia City Council in August 2013 voted to hire Aiston as an independent contractor for economic development services. Third Ward Alderman Dan Chanzit said he supports keeping Aiston in the position, noting Aiston’s arrest did not happen while he was on business for Batavia.

“He’s done such good work for the city in the short amount of time he’s been with us,” Chanzit said. “I would absolutely defend him. Everyone has their demons.”

Aiston also is the former economic development director for St. Charles.

Vote set on issue next month

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School Board members are set to vote Feb. 24 on whether Batavia School District 101 should become a part of the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School based at Aurora University.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. Batavia School Board members on Tuesday discussed the issue.

“The goal is to increase student achievement in math and science,” Batavia School Superintendent Lisa Hichens told board members.

The school is a partnership of Aurora University and West Aurora, East Aurora and Indian Prairie school districts. Oswego School District had been part of the partnership, but later withdrew.

As proposed, 50 Batavia students from third through eighth grade would go to the school. In

BATAVIA – Kane County Sheriff’s Office officials have issued a traffic alert for Saturday morning in the Batavia area because of funeral services planned for former Sheriff George Kramer.

Officials expect large crowds and are asking citizens to be patient as the procession travels from the church to the cemetery. The funeral begins at 10 am. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2300 Main St., Batavia.

Pam was born on May 2, 1953 in St. Charles, to her parents, Lester and Dorothy Norris. She graduated from the University of Denver with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Biology in 1975. She dedicated her life to raising her children. She served on the Board of Trustees at St. Anne’s Episcopal School from 1994 until 2005; she served on Board of Trustees at Kent Denver as well.

SUGAR GROVE – Students and parents in Kaneland School District 302 will see changes in the district’s Web-based student information system, which will begin before the next school year.

The school board voted, 6-1, this week to approve a three-year contract with Tyler Technologies for the upgrade, with Pedro Rivas voting against it. Rivas had been concerned about the district locking itself into a threeyear commitment.

Tim Wolf, the district’s director of technology, said the district needed to do an upgrade because the current vendor, SchoolMaster, was bought by Tyler Technologies. He said Tyler would be retiring the SchoolMaster system.

During recent board meetings, Wolf has presented board members with information they requested, such as costs associated with the upgrade.

The district would pay

$18,096.89 for the first year, which is what the district currently pays, but there will be one-time costs associated with the upgrade – $6,837 for project management, $4,785 for importing the data and $9,791 for training. The three-year deal shows potential costs for training in the second and third years, but Wolf said it was possible that training would not be necessary beyond the first year.

Currently, parents and students can use a system called Kaneland Konnect – via the district’s website and a downloadable app – which can be used to view information, such as homework assignments, grades, transportation details and more. That now will switch to the Tyler SIS Suite.

“This will replace Kaneland Konnect,” Wolf said.

Work must be done to prepare for the move. Wolf said the new version of the app has not been released.

He said those in the district likely would be able to download the app in July. Wolf said it would “look different

because it’s a different system.”

He said there will be updates for Kaneland families in the future, but details haven’t yet been workout out.

South Elgin woman guilty in heroin death editorial@shawmedia.com

Prosecutors presented evidence that on April 4, 2013, the victim, 24-year-old Abbey Nordmeyer of South Elgin, contacted Nielsen and asked her to bring heroin.

The release indicated Nielsen and co-defendant Nicholas Allen, 23, of Batavia, had driven to Chicago earlier and bought heroin, then arrived at Nordmeyer’s South Elgin home, and the three ingested the heroin and went to sleep. When Allen and Nielsen awoke at about 11 a.m. the next day, Nordmeyer was dead, and an autopsy determined that Nordmeyer died of a heroin overdose, the release stated.

On April 4, 2014, Allen agreed to a sentence of eight years in IDOC in exchange for a guilty plea to drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony. Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles set Nielsen’s next court appearance for 1:30 p.m. March 11, in courtroom 305 for motions and sentencing. Nielsen faces a sentence of between six and 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Nielsen remains in the Kane County jail, where she has been held since her arrest in lieu of $150,000 bail. Bond was revoked upon conviction.

The case was prosecuted by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorneys Nicholas Gaeke and Debra Bree.

A 25-year-old South Elgin woman was convicted by a jury Wednesday of drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony, according to a news release issued by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Andrea R. Nielsen faces at least six years in prison for supplying heroin to an acquaintance who died from ingesting it, the release indicat- Andrea R. ed, adding the Nielsen jury deliberated for about 40 minutes before it reached its verdict.

“We are keenly aware of the toll that heroin is taking on our families and our community,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon stated in the release. “Heroin is a horrible drug that has devastating consequences, and in this case is a reminder of the dangers that come with illicit drug use. I hope that those who are using heroin in our community will get help, but when someone dies because of heroin use, those who provide the heroin will be held legally accountable.”

When I mentioned to a friend that I was thinking about a column on the subject, she sent me the essay “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Backpack.” “ ... I had been taught about racism as something which puts others at a disadvantage,” Peggy McIntosh admits, “but ... not to see ... white privilege, which puts me at an advantage.”

She lists 26 perks enjoyed by whites, including the media focusing primarily on their interests; most grocery stores catering to their tastes; when presenting cash, checks or credit cards, their skin color enhances, not hurts, their reliability; and that “flesh”-colored bandages

match their skin.

All 26 advantages came to mind when recalling two letters in the Kane County Chronicle.

A Geneva man posits: “ ... living the life of a thug is not a role in Hollywood. Being a member of a racial minority and/or financially disadvantaged is not ... an excuse to break the law.”

No, it’s not an excuse to break the law; rather, breaking the law is at least partially a result of growing up in violent, impoverished neighborhoods, nonwhite and white.

Instead of explaining away illegal behavior with a one-size-fits-all answer, this letter writer might attempt to understand the complex psychological and sociological reasons that lead to such behavior.

Entire races and socioeconomic classes living on the edge of boil, impatient to tear down commercial and religious structures they rely on? Doesn’t history teach, rather, that all races produce a relatively few disorderly malcontents?

If the Genevan wants to cast stones at those guilty of tearing down walls supporting the public’s well-being, why not heave them at profit-driven millionaire CEOs of financial institutions whose greed helped fuel 2008’s financial meltdown?

Another letter writer states police officers are

authorized “to use whatever force is necessary to apprehend law-breakers.” Sounds like the Batavia writer is confusing a John Wayne movie for enlightened 21st-century law enforcement.

He next shares his perfect record of complying with the law when questioned.

Admirable behavior, but, if he’s white, to imply his run-ins with authorities mirror those of nonwhites, particularly blacks, suggests naiveté – or a denial of the facts, available here: www.dosomething.org/ facts/11-facts-about-racial-discrimination.

Mark Twain’s advice – never let facts get in the way of a good story – might apply to spinning a yarn, but not when trying to understand other races and cultures.

How easy to generalize from one to the many.

Statistics enlighten us to truths obscured by fear and ignorance, but numbers can’t breathe. My next column recounts the story of someone of mixed race who grew up in poverty. He may help those of us who need it to take the challenge of walking a mile in Cherokee moccasins before criticizing Native Americans.

Because we didn’t arrive here by ourselves. To borrow from colleague football coach Barry Switzer’s line: “Some people are born on third base and go through life thinking they hit a triple.”

Could fingerprinting finish voter ID laws debate?

BLOOMBERG NEWS Fingerprints can now be used to unlock smartphones, car engines, even guns. Why not ballots, too?

A New Mexico legislator proposed that his state’s election officials study the feasibility of a biometric voter identification system. The idea is simple enough: Rather than require voters to show a particular type of document that not everyone possesses, the law could require election officials to collect a piece of information – a finger image or an eye scan – from all voters, which would confirm their identity at the polls.

The political appeal of the idea is clear: Republicans would have the ID laws they claim are needed to protect

against voter fraud. And Democrats would have a system that doesn’t disproportionately hurt minorities and the poor. Both parties could declare victory in the war over voter ID and move on. To be sure, it would be an expensive way to prevent a crime that is all but nonexistent: voter impersonation. If that were the only rationale, it would be hard to justify the cost.

But in addition to freeing voters from photo ID requirements, it would bring other benefits. In states where felons are not allowed to vote, for example, biometric images could be cross-checked with prison records to identify anyone who is illegally registered. A biometric ID also would allow election officials to make their

notoriously unreliable voter rolls more accurate.

Training poll workers to use the technology would be a challenge. But it would not be insurmountable, as other countries are showing. From Brazil to Yemen to the Philippines, biometric voting is spreading.

Africa, where voter integrity has long been a problem, has been an early adopter.

Elections that use biometrics haven’t always gone smoothly.

When voters have trouble using the finger scanners, as happened in Brazil’s recent presidential election, long lines of frustrated voters can result. As the technology improves, however, biometric voting systems will become more efficient – and increasingly standard around the world.

Each rotation had finished apart from the Vikings’ turn on the floor exercise.

Geneva scored 146.7 team points to check a conference title off its lofty January-February to-do list. The score, 1.7 points short of matching a season high, topped the runner-up St. Charles co-op (138.8), thirdplace Batavia (134.8) and the rest of the seven-team field.

Ginsberg, the defending IHSA all-around state champion, won each event to earn the conference all-around title. Her 38.1 final score edged her older sister, Grace, by two points, and accumulated

by virtue of victories in the vault (9.5), uneven bars (9.7), balance beam (9.45) and floor exercise (9.45).

Her all-around mark fell four-tenths of a point shy of matching her season and career high, while her bars score was a personal best.

“I was thinking that if I just came in, had a clean meet and hit everything, I’d be good,” Ginsberg said.

Geneva and the St. Charles co-op entered the night as the favorites to vie for the title, renewing a rivalry that’s taken on special sizzle this season as both programs aim to improve on separate state runs in 201314.

On Jan. 21, on the same Mack Olson gym apparatuses on which they competed Thursday, the Vikings edged

the co-op, 148.4 to 145.95, the gymnastics equivalent of a shootout.

St. Charles coach Amy Lill pinpointed struggles on two events as the culprit. She joked they might gave her premature gray hair at age 35 considering how much the team has worked on them, but also was optimistic about recovering for the looming state series.

“We had a lot of mistakes on bars and beam,” Lill said.

“I just have to figure out how to pull those events together.”

Emma Grace Redmond-Mattucci finished third in the all-around with a 34.75., 0.2 points better than Batavia’s top all-arounder, fifthplace Megan McGee.

“We’re kind of where we want to be right now. ... Hopefully, we can hit our routines and keep that up. We did have a few falls and missed connections.”

From here, the Tri-Cities teams will disperse to separate IHSA regionals next week. Batavia travels Tuesday to Wheaton Warrenville South, Geneva hosts its own competition on Wednesday and the St. Charles co-op competes Thursday at York.

Each regional serves as a feeder to the Glenbard North Sectional on Feb. 10. Regional-winning teams automatically advance to sectionals, along with two at-large teams within the sectional complex who compile the best scores among non-champions.

Individual advancement to sectionals progresses similarly. The top five finishers in each event and the allaround earn sessional spots, with the next 12-best athletes from the sectional complex moving on as at-large entries.

Kellett sparkled early for the Royals, scoring 11 of her team’s 13 points in the first quarter and assisting on the other basket.

But the Eagles, who trailed, 13-5, after the opening quarter, soon switched to a matchup zone, which seemed to slow Kellett’s rhythm, and no other consistent offensive options materialized for Rosary.

“We were allowing a little bit too much penetration,” Wilkie said. “It wasn’t necessarily our defenders’ fault, it was our help-side defenders’

fault. … I wasn’t real confident that they could shoot the ball that well so we decided to switch it up in the second quarter.”

Galbato led Aurora Christian with 11 points and Brown added nine. Tokars scored all six of her points in the final quarter.

“I told them in the locker room that was really the quintessential team win,” Wilkie said.

The win gave Aurora Christian two out of three victories against the Royals this season, with the Eagles taking both of the conference matchups.

AURORA – Aurora Christian girls basketball coach Burney Wilkie considers senior forward Natasha Brown arguably the premier rebounder in the state.

Brown added fresh evidence in support of her coach’s claim Thursday, snaring 17 rebounds to help Aurora Christian grind out a low-scoring Suburban Christian Conference battle over Rosary, 38-29.

The Eagles outscored the visiting Royals, 18-5, in the fourth quarter to snare the win.

bounding were substantial components of Aurora Christian’s closing kick. With 2:20 to play in the fourth quarter and her team leading, 33-29, Brown blocked a shot and corralled the deflection to put her team in prime position to close the game.

The younger brother of former Marmion state champions Nico and Johnny Jimenez placed second at 160 pounds, delivering once more as a fill-in as the team navigates injuries to Nate Jimenez juniors Trace Carello (high ankle sprain) and Matt Ferraro (hamstring).

“He’s been doing a great job stepping up for the guys that are injured. He’s been punching guys in the mouth, which is all you can ask for,” junior 132-pounder A.J. Jaffe said. “He’s been wrestling real tough. … I mean, coming in as a freshman at 160 pounds is a hard thing to do, and he’s not wrestling like a freshman. He’s wrestling like an upperclassman.”

Nate Jimenez (12-7) watched and later sparred with many of his current teammates at “The Barn” at SCN Youth Wrestling in Campton Hills.

Whether he joins them when the Cadets begin the Class 3A state series at the Batavia Regional on Feb. 7 has yet to be determined.

Cadets co-coach Ryan Cumbee expects Carello will be healthy for regionals, filling the spot at 160, but still is closely monitoring Ferraro – who

would compete at 152 if healthy – with counterpart Donny Reynolds. Jimenez is certified at 152.

“Truth be told, if Matt’s not 100 percent, we have a decision as coaches,” Cumbee said. “Because we’ve got a freshman who’s working his butt off and getting better and then we have an injured junior. We still need to win our regional tournament as a team if we want to go on and continue in the [team dual] state series. So it’s going to be a tough decision to make.”

Polaris packs a punch Five St. Charles North athletes entered the Upstate Eight Conference tournament this past weekend at Geneva.

Led by Chad Reynolds’ title at 160, each one finished in the top six, propelling North to a ninth-place showing among the 16-team field.

“That just shows how deep we are,” said North Stars senior Ethan Fredericks, who took fourth at 170. “We might not be a giant team … but we have a small group of guys, we’re really close and we make each other better every day. And that’s what really counts, especially in this type of atmosphere.

These kids we wrestled aren’t bad.

These are state-qualifier type kids.”

Again battling with numbers concerns, North has forfeited four of 14 bouts during most duals this season, and was contending with some illnesses and injuries at conference.

North’s incumbents from past sea-

sons – including Kolbe O’Brien (third at 106), Conrad Noverini (sixth at 132) and Steve Collins (second at 138) – appreciate coach Ben Hummel’s dedication and ongoing bid to grow the program.

“Last year, a couple of us placed, and this year we had two in the finals, two [third-place matches] and another [fifth-place match],” O’Brien said.

“Guys want to win and wrestle more.”

BATAVIA’S BIG GUYS What happened: Batavia’s lone UEC champion, 220-pounder Dylan Uzumecki, hailed from the top of the lineup, and was flanked by 285-pound runner-up Mitch Krusz and fifth-place finishers Noah Frazier (195) and Jake Birkhaug (170).

Frazier, Krusz and Uzumecki challenge each other each day in the mat room.

“They always say you need great partners in the room to push each other. That’s how you get better,” Frazier said. “It’s awesome. Every day, it’s a duel.”

Batavia’s victory ultimately set the Bulldogs on course for a UEC River title, but East struck with 10 top-five individual finishes at the conference tournament to maintain its recent stranglehold on the UEC team crown.

“Winning this tournament’s a big deal, a big deal for our confidence, I think,” Saints coach Jason Potter said.

“Splitting the conference in half and having dual meets is fine, but I mean, anything can happen. My hat’s off to Batavia. They wrestled us fantastic that night, you know. I’d love to wrestle them again, but it’s not going to happen, so the only way that we were going to try to salvage the season is come in here and dominate this thing and try to do our best. I think our kids did a great job.”

In addition to competing, the Vikings are tasked with helping move mats to the contest gym and deconstructing the setup once the final awards are distributed. “Everyone kind of knows what they’re doing now,” said Geneva’s Colin Parsons, who won at 132 pounds. “So we set up pretty quick.”

Raanta, Teravainen are new odd couple

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com ANAHEIM, Calif. – Antti Raanta and Teuvo Teravainen were strolling through a mall near Marina Del Rey on Tuesday afternoon, popping into six or seven shoe stores in search of colorful Nikes, then thinking better of it as they imagined their less fashion-forward North American teammates finding them in kangaroo court for their flashy European style.

“If you’re wearing a pink shirt or something to practice, you know how the guys are,” Raanta said. “You always have to buy the black T-shirt and blue jeans. It’s a little boring.

Maybe we have to go back to Chicago and buy those shoes and start bringing a little color to the team.”

As they wrapped up their shopping trip, they were speaking Finnish as they walked past a man eating lunch in the food court. He picked up his head and in a gruff voice growled, “Where you guys from?!” A startled Teravainen quickly said, “Finland” and the two scurried away.

Teravainen turned to Raanta and asked, “Next time, should I say Russia?”

Move over, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. The Blackhawks have a new odd couple – the outgoing, ever-smiling 25-year-old Raanta and the quiet, reserved 20-year-

old Teravainen.

Raanta has taken the rookie under his wing since he was recalled Jan. 2. They drive together to the airport. They hang out together on the road. They discuss the latest news and results from the Finnish pro league, the Liiga. And when Teravainen gets a little shy around others, Raanta takes particular fun in Antti Raanta embarrassing him by making something up and forcing Teravainen to have to use English to deny it.

And while Andrew Shaw got some sun in Teuvo the Dominican Teravainen Republic, Ben Smith got some time with his family back in Connecticut and five other teammates got the spotlight in Columbus, Raanta (who’s saving money for his wedding this summer) and Teravainen (who’s still living out of a hotel) spent their All-Star break in Chicago playing video games. Mostly FIFA 15 soccer for Xbox, because Teravainen spent most of training camp wiping the floor with Raanta in NHL 15.

“We do all stupid things,” Teravainen said with a smile.

While Raanta gets to act like

a kid again, Teravainen has benefitted even more from the friendship. He credited Raanta for helping ease him into the NHL lifestyle, and into the “joking club” in the dressing room. When Teravainen first showed up in Chicago last spring for three games, he was overwhelmed and kept to himself. In training camp, he was a little more comfortable.

Now, he’s just one of the guys.

On the ice, he’s shown all the qualities that made him such a touted prospect. He has two goals and two assists in his last five games, and both Joel Quenneville and Stan Bowman have raved about him, and believe he could be in the NHL to stay, even when Kris Versteeg comes back from injury. His daring charge through traffic in the neutral zone and offensive zone set up Andrew Shaw’s go-ahead goal in the third period of Wednesday night’s eventual loss to the Kings.

His boldness is coming through in other ways, too.

“He’s already chirping guys like [Shaw] does now,” Raanta said. “When you talk Finnish with him, you can see that he’s also outgoing. He’s a really funny guy. So it’s good to see him coming out of that a little bit and getting along with the guys so good, so I don’t have to be there all the time. It’s a great thing to see. He’s smiling here, and he’s enjoying it.”

PHOENIX – It was a brief meeting at Halas Hall, but Bears cornerback Charles Tillman walked away with a great feeling – a sense of excitement for what’s ahead for his beloved team.

“I saw some people; I saw everybody,” Tillman said Thursday of a recent visit to Halas Hall. “I just think it’s a good year to get excited about Chicago Bears football.”

Those people would include new Bears coach John Fox and general manager Ryan Pace. Tillman said it was a brief introduction, consisting of small talk and some pleasantries for about 30 to 60 seconds But “within those 30 seconds, it was all good,” said Tillman, who is in Phoenix as part of the NFL Honors awards show as last year’s Walter Payton Man of the Year winner.

NFL circles have been abuzz over the Bears’ decision to hire Fox. There has been an overflow of compliments for the move – including some unsolicited praise – throughout Super Bowl week.

It’s a move that’s definitely won over Tillman and linebacker Lance Briggs after two tough, injury-filled seasons after the firing of Lovie Smith.

Just when it looked like other teams could offer better situations for Tillman and Briggs, the arrival of Fox, and to a lesser extent, Pace, have led to hopes for more time in Chicago.

“I echo what Lance said [on Wednesday],” said Tillman, who was brought back in 2014 on a one-year deal with a $2.25 million base salary.

“I think it was a great hire.

I think Chicago Bears fans should be excited about what the Bears are doing from the GM all the way to the position coaches. I think they’ve made some great moves.

“I thought it was thumbs up, four stars. I thought it was a great move on (president) Ted Phillips and (chairman) George McCaskey. I thought it was a great hire on their part. I think they’re moving in the right direction to get Chicago Bears football back to where it was.”

Like Briggs, Pace has questions to consider with Tillman. He’s entering his 13th season and there are durability concerns after tearing his right triceps.

“I feel good,” Tillman said.

“Rehabbing, but I feel awesome, like I’m ready to go.”

Still, there’s been an unmistakable sense of rejuvenation in Tillman and Briggs’ words this week, especially when talking about Fox. “Two Super Bowls, two different teams,” Tillman said. “He’s done really some good stuff. He’s got a great résumé.”

Tillman and Briggs both believe they can play on and would like to for Fox, although their futures are very much uncertain right now.

“Yeah, I’d like to be in Chicago,” Tillman said. “I’m feeling good, feel great. I’ve been there 12 years. It would be 13 now. I don’t know. We’ll see what happens.”

Gronkowski could be greatest TE when done PHOENIX – Even more than it spotlights great players, the Super Bowl spotlights great personalities. When a great player also has a great personality special things happen.

Rob Gronkowski is something special.

Tom Brady says of the Patriot known simply as Gronk, “He’s got a great personality. He’s really been pretty consistent since he got to our team. I remember seeing him on draft day, he and his family jumping on the stage, and that’s still the way he is.

“I was joking, I don’t think he’s ever had a bad day in his life. He always seems to have a great time.”

Seahawks linebacker Bruce Irvin sees the same things as Brady, but doesn’t enjoy them as much. “He’s big, fast, I mean he’s Gronk.

He’s an All-Pro, [6-foot-6] guy.

He can run. It’s Gronkowski.

He likes to party. What else do

you want me to say?”

Actually, Irvin summed it up pretty well but there also is this. Gronk could be on his way to being the greatest tight end of all time.

Over five seasons and 65 games Gronkowski has totaled 308 receptions, 4,379 yards, 54 touchdowns. In six playoff games he’s added 31 receptions, 469 yards and five touchdowns.

Gronk’s regular season totals work out to 4.8 catches a game, 67.4 yards and .83 touchdowns, and his playoff numbers are better.

Tony Gonzalez is the most prolific tight end of all time and his career averages over 271 games are 4.9 catches a game, 55.8 yards and .41 TD’s a game, half Gronkowski’s scoring prowess.

Just for grins Bears fans Mike Ditka’s averages are 2.7 catches a game, 36.8 yards and .27 TD’s.

Health has been an issue

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush for Gronk, but he is completely recovered from ankle, knee, forearm and back injuries that plagued him from 2012 – 2013, and he won’t turn 26 until May 11.

What does he say about his image as one of the most fun – loving, enthusiastic and talented players in the game?

“I mean, I just go out there and do my thing and do what I do. If that’s the case, if that’s what it’s looking like, then it’s a good thing, obviously.

“Gameday is such a good feeling. You just look forward to it all week, and it’s an honor to be out there on Sundays.

You’re having a blast out there in front of everyone and playing with your teammates.

I feel like the game of football takes away all your – anxiety,

stress – it takes away everything because it’s such a great game, and you just think about what you have to do out on the field in the moment.”

Asked if Brady’s right, that he’s never had a bad day Gronk said, “Oh, yeah, I mean I definitely have, no doubt.

But I mean, when I come into work I don’t like it to affect anyone if I’m having a bad day. Who hasn’t? If you go to work, you want it to always be clean, always want it to be a positive atmosphere in there, for sure.”

He does take some exception to the idea he’s all parties and God – given gifts.

“I mean, I would say I’m a little underrated, for sure.

People sometimes just look at me like I just go out 24/7. It’s pretty funny.

“I just laugh it off, but really, at the same time, throughout the week many times during the season, I don’t even step foot out of my house. I

just chill and make sure I’m taking care of my body and making sure I’m doing what’s right to get ready for the next day at practice because I always put that No. 1.

“I love the game of football, and as I grow, and as I’m getting older, and as I’m maturing more in this league, I feel like football just keeps getting more and more important to me.”

Players who are 6-6, 265-pound and run 4.65 40-yard dashes and have hands the size of A2000’s are surely rare but to many of his teammates. his “never a bad day” personality is just as important.

All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis said, “He’s energetic, very energetic. He loves life, and that’s Gronk. He’s always having a blast.”

Plans for NFL Draft slowly starting to take shape BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush

More online PHOENIX – A bunch of us Chicago folks got a bit of a break Wednesday after three long days of New England and Seattle overkill.

It was the 2015 NFL Draft Celebratory Reception, co-hosted by the Chicago Sports Commission, Choose Chicago and the Bears. The key to the event seemed to be Choose Chicago, and to be honest, it took a little web surfing after returning to my room to figure out just exactly who and what that is.

According to the website, ChooseChicago.com, it’s the official destination marketing organization for the city of Chicago.

Launched by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, its mission is to bring regional, national and international business and leisure visitors

Apparently Emanuel’s vision was to restructure all tourism sales and marketing activities for the city under a single, streamlined agency.

Beyond that, it seems Choose Chicago is most responsible for convincing the NFL to bring the 2015 NFL Draft to Chicago this spring, from April 30 to May 2.

The Chicago Sports Commission was launched in 2011 and then became part of Choose Chicago when it was formed in 2012. The Sports

Commission’s mission is to recruit and support high-profile, major sporting events to the city that generate economic impact and positive exposure for Chicago.

It seems likely all this launching and planning might have been a result of the 2016 Olympic bid not going so well.

A number of us from the Chicago media who attended were hoping to get all kinds of details on just what this big draft shindig is going to entail, but it seems not all of that has been worked out yet.

Although the draft will be in Chicago this year, it still is the NFL’s show. Apparently, a couple of other minor projects, like Super Bowl XLIX this weekend here in Phoenix, have to get staffed and completed before the league dives headlong into its plans for Chicago.

The NFL Experience is a five-day show that takes place every year at the Super Bowl, and is part NFL Merchandis-

ing Flea Market, games and activities for kids and their families that might include running 40-yard dashes, passing, receiving and touch football drills, kicking field goals and other games, and skill tests related to Pro Football, concerts and special events.

The league, the city and the Bears couldn’t be more

excited about it, and shortly after the final gun of the Super Bowl, we’re all going to get hit with a marketing blitz that will tell us everything we need to know.

CAMPUS NOTES Notre Dame Christopher Humes II of Geneva has been named to the dean’s list for the University of Notre Dame’s College of Science for outstanding scholarship during the fall 2014 semester. Students who achieve dean’s honors at Notre Dame represent the top 30 percent of students at their college.

College of William and Mary Sarah Beth Rabin of St. Charles was recently named to the dean’s list for the 2014 fall semester at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. In order to achieve dean’s list status, a fulltime, degree-seeking undergraduate student at the university must take at least 12 credit hours and earn a 3.6 grade-point average.

GreenField residents donate blankets to Project Linus KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 19, residents of GreenFields of Geneva made fleece blankets for charity.

Approximately 60 residents and volunteers hand-tied 50 blankets and donated them to Project Linus, a nonprofit organization that collects new blankets and afghans handmade by “blanketeers.”

“Dr. King devoted his life to helping create a better world. MLK Day is known as a ‘day on’ rather than a ‘day off,’” said Rebecca Sytsma, activities coordinator at GreenFields, in a news release. “We recruited GreenFields residents, along with volunteers from throughout the area, to collaborate on a wonderful service project.”

The blankets are distributed to children who are ill, traumatized or otherwise in need, according to the release.

“Since it was a school holiday, we had

a lot of kids helping out,” said Sytsma.

“The residents of GreenFields are very service-oriented in general, and this project was particularly appealing because of the intergenerational component. And the resulting blankets were colorful and cozy.”

GreenFields is a retirement community, offering independent living, assisted living, memory support, rehabilitation and nursing.

Record number of visitors tour Mooseheart holiday lights show KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com The 2014 Mooseheart Holiday Lights Show set a record for the number of visitors that viewed the lights display.

The display, which was open from Nov. 28 through Dec. 31, was viewed by 10,133 car-loads of visitors, which was 2,000 more than the previous best, established in 2012, according to a news release.

rector Gary Urwiler said in the release that last year’s Holiday Lights Show averaged 298 cars per night through its 34-day run.

The most popular days were when Santa Claus made an appearance at the fieldhouse, states the release. Santa Claus’ visits saw a surge to 1,000 cars per night, Urwiler said in the release. But everyday saw a steady stream of visitors that traveled the 1.8mile loop through the campus.

Santa Claus sat for free photos while crafts and activities took place in the fieldhouse. Free cookies and hot chocolate also were served.

“That’s a pretty remarkable number for the four-hour span the show is open on those nights,” Urwiler said in the release. “When you see families come to the fieldhouse at 6 and stay until 9 and enjoy the craft tables and bounce houses, as well as Santa, it is really great to see.”

In the release, Urwiler

said the 2015 show is already planned, and will open Nov. 27 and continue through Dec. 31, giving visitors 35 days to view the lights display.

“I think people like to take the opportunity to slow down for a bit during the holiday season,” Urwiler said in the release. “The bottom line is this was a great year for us to see sizable growth. It inspires us to continue this outreach, to invite people onto the campus and to let them see what lies beyond the gates.”

University of Evansville Melissa Barber of Batavia, Kyle Gesell of Geneva, Riley Horlock of St. Charles, Jessica Jakubaitis of Batavia and Eric Meuer of Elburn earned a position on the University of Evansville Dean’s List for academic achievements during the 2014 fall semester. To make the dean’s list, a student at the university must earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

James Madison University Meghan Elizabeth Niski of St. Charles has been named to the dean’s list at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, for the spring 2014 semester.

Students who earn dean’s list honors at the university must carry at least 12 graded credit hours and earn a grade-point average of between 3.5 and 3.899. Niski is a junior, majoring in marketing.

Davenport University Colleen Lullo of St. Charles has been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2014 semester at Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. To achieve the dean’s list, a student at the university must maintain a minimum 3.5 grade-point average.

Dear Abby: Last week, I had a seizure in front of my fourthgrade students. This has never happened to me before, so I had never spoken to my students about such a thing. I want to write them and their families a letter expressing my apologies, thanking them for their kind thoughts and giving basic advice on how to handle a seizure. Is this appropriate? If so, how do I start the letter?

– Appropriate In New Jersey Dear Appropriate: Before writing the letter, check with the principal of your school. Because you now know that you are prone to having seizures, I think it makes sense that your students should know what one is, and what to do in case it happens again in the classroom. Some seizures can be almost unnoticeable, while others can be quite severe. If yours are severe, a student should imme-

Dear Abby: My daughter has always been very independent. She had a normal childhood with the usual friends and events, nothing traumatic that I know of. She is a pretty girl with a funny personality and is very bright.

The issue is, she is 18 and has been on only two dates. She shows no interest in forming any sort of romantic relationship.

A ‘charley horse’ can occur for any number of reasons Dear Doctor K: Over the past few months, I’ve been experiencing severe “charley horses.” What causes them? How can I prevent them?

Dear Reader: Almost everyone has a “charley horse” at some point in his or her life. These are muscle spasms in which a group of muscles involuntarily contracts. This causes pain and inability to use those muscles.

Stretching typically stops the cramp. But you may continue to have soreness for several days.

Often charley horses develop for no clear reason. They can happen while sleeping, or they may develop if you stay in one position for a long period, as in writer’s cramp.

A variety of conditions are associated with such muscle cramps. They include: • Exercise, especially with dehydration • Pregnancy • Kidney disease (particularly patients being given dialysis) • Low potassium (this can result from taking diuretics for treatment of either high blood pressure or heart failure) • Low calcium • Low magnesium • Hyperventilation (breathing too fast) • Hypothyroidism (underactive

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff thyroid) • Certain medicines. These include drugs that treat conditions ranging from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease to high cholesterol, osteoporosis and asthma.

• Muscle disease If your cramps are unexplained, severe, prolonged or frequent, you should see your doctor.

Depending on the cause of your muscle cramps, you may be able to prevent them: • If you’re getting cramps during exercise, drink water before and during exercise. This should prevent cramps due to dehydration. If drinking water alone is not enough, salt tablets or sports drinks may help replace minerals in your body.

• When you get cramps during exercise, stop your activity to stretch and massage the affected muscle at the first sign of a spasm.

Use heat to relax the muscle when the spasm begins. Ice may help after the first spasm and when the pain has improved. If the muscle is still sore after heat and ice, try a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory

drug (NSAID), such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) to help with pain.

• If you have recently started a new medicine that could cause muscle cramps, ask your doctor about switching to a different medicine or adjusting the dose.

• If you have an underactive thyroid, you should be taking synthetic thyroid hormone. This should correct many symptoms, including the cramps.

• If your potassium, calcium or magnesium levels are low, taking supplements and correcting the underlying reason for your deficiency may help.

In more severe cases, your doctor can prescribe medications to help prevent spasms. In people who get repeat cramps for no clear reason, and whose kidneys are functioning normally, I often still prescribe potassium and magnesium supplements. That’s true even if a person’s blood levels of these minerals are normal. There aren’t good medical studies of whether this practice is beneficial, but it’s been my experience that it sometimes helps.

Seems that mom favors brother Dr. Wallace: When I was reading the letter from a teenage girl who complained that her mother favored her brother over her, it made me think about my own situation. Even though you didn’t think it was a big problem, it was to her, and it is to me. My brother is only a year older than I am but he has more privileges and can get away with anything. I am a good student and am in lots of student activities at school, and I never cause my parents any problems.

I got my driver’s license a year ago but only once was I allowed to drive the family’s second car to school. I couldn’t even drive it when I had to stay late and would be too late to ride the school bus home. But my brother seems to have the use of the car any time he wants it. In fact, he has even used the car to ditch school and go to the beach!

When it comes to chores, my brother has it easy. He takes the garbage out after dinner and mows the lawn once a week. My job is to set the table for dinner and wash and dry the dishes every night. If my mom is sick or has a meeting out of town, I even have to cook dinners and do the laundry.

We had a slumber party the other night, and we were discussing this and my friends all agreed that their moms show favoritism to their sons and sometimes treat their daughters like servants.

My suggestion is for

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace you to document the instances of what you feel is favoritism for a week.

Then when you bring the topic up again with your parents, do so without anger or accusation. Stick to the facts, and maybe you can turn things around in your family.

Dr. Wallace: My fiance is a wonderful person.

He is kind, honest and respectful of others. He has a good job and is taking college courses at our local community college.

He is a serious student, and his goal is to graduate from college.

Mario’s parents separated when he was 10 years old because his dad was sent to prison for a very long time for a very serious crime. His mother did a wonderful job raising him by herself.

He graduated from high school, was an all-star soccer player, and was never in any trouble. We love each other, and there is no doubt that he and I will become husband and wife.

I love my mother very much, but she does not always see things clearly.

Once in a while she is a pain. Mom is not happy that Mario and I are in love and want to marry soon. The reason is that she believes that criminal traits are inherited and that if we marry and have children, chances would be high that they would have criminal tendencies.

People are not born with criminal traits. Crime is a learned behavior.

Finally, if South wins the first trick and attacks clubs, West should duck one round and take note of East’s discard of the diamond 10 on the second round.

West shifts to that suit, and a spade through South results in a satisfying down two.
