or the past week, I have been on a winter break, and I spent much of my time skiing, ice skating, sledding and taking walks in the snow.

Thursday morning, it was back to the business of photography, and I found many people in Kane County digging out from the 7 to 9 inches of the white New Year’s

Kane County health department urges radon testing KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – January is National Radon Action Month, and the Kane County Health Department – in conjunction with the Kane County Healthy Places Coalition – recommends testing for the presence of radon, one of the leading causes of lung cancer.

Testing kits are available for $15 from the Kane County Health Department and Kane County Development Office.

Kits are available at the Kane County Development Office, 719 S. Batavia Ave., fourth floor, Geneva, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Most local hardware stores also carry the kits.

Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that nat-

urally occurs from the breakdown of uranium.

Rocks and soil can contain uranium. Radon gas can enter through cracks into such buildings as homes and schools, exposing people to the radiation. Because of the Midwest’s geology, homes in Kane County have the potential for higher levels of radon.

The science of soap

Sugar Grove woman offers 41 fragrances

S

UGAR GROVE – Sue Czer heated some hard fats in a bowl, waiting as they melted and hit the magic temperature of 100 before she poured in liquid vegetable fats.

Wearing safety goggles and protective gloves, she carefully poured a clear mixture of lye and water into the liquid vat of fat and stirred with an immersion blender.

As the clear liquid fat blended with the lye, it began looking golden and milky.

After a few minutes, Czer – pronounced Caeser, like the salad – knew it was ready because it achieved “trace” – a property when the mixture is like soft pudding and forms droplets that remain on the surface for a moment.

Then it’s ready for fragrance or other ingredients, like oatmeal, to be mixed in.

This is the saponification process, when molecules of fat and lye split apart and become glycerin and soap.

And it all happens in the corner of Czer’s basement in Sugar Grove, where she makes soap, scrubs and lotion bars and sells them through her company, Prairie Soaps and Salts.

She sells them at eight to nine craft shows per year, as well as wholesale under other labels, such as to a beekeeper who wants to sell soap made with his honey under his own label.

The new year signals the beginning of replenishing the various types of soap she sells.

“I just got through with all the Christmas shows,” Czer said. “And so now what I’m doing, I’ve got to make

all my soaps that I’m going to need in the spring for the spring shows coming up.”

Soap-making began as a hobby for Czer, 59, who made bars as little gifts for Christmas.

“Then all my relatives said, ‘You should sell these,’” she said.

Czer said she studied the chemistry of soap-making for two years, looking at recipes, procedures and ingredi-

ents before she left her sales job of 20 years to embark on a second career of making soap and selling it through her own business.

This was five and a half years ago and Czer said she

never looked back.

Czer said she offers 41 soap fragrances – from unscented to lavender, pomegranate to lemongrass mixed with rosemary to this day’s spicy fragrance of bay rum.

After the last mix of fragrance is mixed in, Czer poured the liquid soap into a square frame that will make 24 bars of soap. She covered it with plastic wrap and took it to another part of the basement to further insulate it for 24 hours.

Then Czer turned yesterday’s batch out of the frame and begins cutting it into bars, using a double-handled knife to make slices and a crinkle knife for vegetables for a decorative edge.

“After 24 hours, it’s a little harder than a loaf of Velveeta cheese,” Czer said, demonstrating how the long knife cuts the loaf of soap into bars.

The bars will be allowed to cure in a tray for 30 days before she sells them. The lye settles down during the curing process so the soap won’t burn. Then she measures the pH value of each batch of soap, Czer said.

In chemistry, pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline a substance is on a scale from 0 to 14. Anything less than 7 being more acidic and anything above 7 being more basic or alkaline.

“My pH level is always between 7 and 8, which is that of tap water,” Czer said. “So between a 7 pH and 8 pH level is [neutral], like Switzerland. It’s nothing. It’s not too acidic. It’s not too oily. This way it’s good for your skin.”

Special Geneva library meeting rescheduled

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Library Board rescheduled a special meeting from Thursday night to 7 p.m. Monday at 127 James St., Geneva.

The special meeting is to consider the hiring of a temporary adviser to the library

director. According to the agenda, the board is expected to take action after a closed session for personnel.

Board member Steve Andersson has said that he expected the board majority would approve a contract with a person who would be an adviser to the library director.

8LOCAL BRIEFS Course offered at Elgin Community Church ELGIN – “Perspectives on the World Christian Movement,” a 15-week course, will be offered again in Elgin on Tuesday nights from Jan. 14 to May 6.

Gregory Freeman, owner of DeKalb-based All-Star Heating and Air Conditioning, agrees a programmable thermostat is the way to go. But there can be drawbacks if the thermostat is set too low because heating the house will take longer and become more expensive.

Freeman suggests if people have an existing furnace that they regularly change the filters every 30 to 45 days.

They should have the furnace regularly cleaned and checked to ensure it is working at maximum efficiency.

“It’s like your health or automobile, you have to maintain it,” he said.

Other ways people can save on energy is keeping a home well-insulated by not only blocking cold air from doors and windows but also fans, vents and plumbing underneath sinks.

Close doors to rooms that are not in use and clear radiators, registers, air returns, baseboards and furniture of dust and other obstacles.

One commonly held myth about gas utility companies is that they cannot turn off the service during the winter season.

Companies can shut off service if temperatures are expected to stay above 32 degrees for the next 24 hours.

“If people are behind on their bills, they shouldn’t

think they’ll get a break in the winter,” Chilsen said.

For their part, ComEd officials offer financial assistance programs to customers struggling with electricity bills, such as Residential Special Hardship grants, ComEd Helps Active Military Personnel and Non-Profit Special Hardship programs. Details on who qualifies for the assistance programs are available through www.ComEd.com.

Paul Callighan, ComEd spokesman, said that the average monthly bill for a residential customer on the ComEd energy rate is about $73. For customers who use Nicor Gas Co., the current gas cost was 40 cents per therm this December, compared to 45 cents per therm for December 2012, according to its website.

Another myth customers have on energy costs is that nothing can be done to cut back on the costs.

Chilsen pointed out people can use www.cubenergysaver.com, which can give customers money-saving plans for free.

He said if people are in danger of losing their heating service during the winter, they can contact the Citizens Utility Board and have their rights as a customer explained, along with access to the necessary resources.

“The No. 1 part of being a utility customer is knowing your rights,” he said.

When it comes to cutting down on winter heating costs, Jim Chilsen recommends not making your home work harder than necessary to make you comfortable.

Chilsen, Citizens Utility Board spokesman, said there are many little things people can do that can make a big difference on their gas bill.

The Citizens Utility Board, a nonprofit organization that represents utility customers’ interests, knows several ways customers can save on energy.

“Nobody would say their gas bills are low,” he said.

“While it’s good news that gas prices have been relatively stable in the last few years, people are still struggling to pay their energy costs. Practicing energy efficiency at home is still a necessity.”

In fact, the U.S. Energy Information Administration is predicting the cost of heating a home in the Midwest with natural gas will increase almost 12 percent this winter, while remaining the most cost-effective option.

The average household in the Midwest will spent $713 heating a home with natural gas from October through March, compared with $974 for homes heated with electricity and $1,584 for those heated with propane, according to the administration’s December forecast.

Last year, the average Midwest household spent $638 heating a home with natural gas, $955 heating a home with electricity and $1,333 heating a home with propane.

No matter the energy source, customers can cut costs by buying a programmable thermostat that will adjust the home temperature automatically at different times throughout the day.

People can save up to 3 percent on their heating bill for each degree lowered on the thermostat, according to the

Temperatures poised to plunge below zero

alagattolla@shawmedia.com Many Kane County residents have spent much of the new year shoveling snow. And while weather officials say some additional snow is likely in the next few days, the big news after that will be very cold weather.

Temperatures could remain below zero, from Sunday night through Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Meteorologist Ed Fenelon said the last time temperatures were below zero for an entire day was on Jan. 15, 2009.

“We’ll get a significant arctic blast of air on Monday and Tuesday,” Fenelon said. “It’s going to be brutal.”

With the high temperature on Monday forecast to be 8 below zero, and the low Monday night expected to be 18 below zero, it sets up a potentially difficult return to school for local students who have been off on a holiday break.

Jim Blaney, spokesman for St. Charles School District 303, said district officials will monitor the weather. But Blaney said it is unlikely that the district would make an early announcement about whether school would be in session.

“We are well aware the forecast for Monday is for temperatures below zero,” said Blaney, who stressed that district officials always keep an eye on the weather, and that safety is the top priority. But as far as making determinations, “we wait for the conditions that are present,” he said, adding that, generally speaking, any announcements would take place early Monday.

A news release from the city of St. Charles acknowledged that “dangerously cold temperatures” would be in the area, and officials wanted to caution people “that if you must go out and be in the elements, to please dress for the weather.”

As for the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day snow event, the National Weather Service issued 24-hour snow totals that showed St. Charles received the most snow in the area – 9 inches.

The weather service indicated that Sugar Grove received 4.8 inches of snow, but the village’s public works department said that number should be 8 inches. Other numbers include Elburn and Geneva at 7.5 inches, North Aurora at 7.2 inches and Batavia at 6.7 inches.

Fenelon said because there was significant lake-effect snow, the numbers will vary wildly from area to area. For instance, Gurnee measured 18 inches of snow.

Snow is not in the forecast for today, but on Saturday, the forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of snow in the afternoon.

“We’re still analyzing that storm, but certainly there could be a few inches of snow,” Fenelon said. “Folks are going to want to monitor that.”

There is a slight chance of snow Sunday, and then the cold begins. Sunday night’s low is 10 below zero, and after a frigid Monday, Tuesday’s forecast calls for a high of 3 below zero and a low of 11 below zero.

Wednesday’s forecast high is 14 degrees above zero.

Russell said he decided to unveil the logo at the Herrington Inn because of its historical significance. It was the site of the county’s first courthouse and where county officials, including coroner, were first elected, he said.

He said he intends to present the new logo to the Kane County Board at an upcoming meeting.

GENEVA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell on Thursday unveiled a new logo to represent his office.

“Our new identity will go a long way in communicating our message,” Russell said to a small crowd gathered in Geneva at the Herrington Inn. The coroner’s office has long been represented by a logo portraying the hand of a higher power holding the scales of justice. A bundle of wheat also was depicted.

“It didn’t signify anything for Kane County,” Russell said. “It didn’t signify the [coroner’s] office at all.”

Russell enlisted the help of St. Charles resident Ethan Pollard, a third-year graphic design student at Judson University, to update the logo at no cost to taxpayers.

Pollard, who described the project as a “fantastic opportunity,” said the logo was the result of several months’ work.

As a nod to the first coroners, Russell said, the logo includes a knight kneeling at a headstone. Rays of sunlight

To the Editor: I find Walt Zlotow’s letter to the editor (Kane County Chronicle; Dec. 27, 2013) quite touching. Mr. Zlotow expresses deep concern for Republican primary gubernatorial candidates state Sen. Bill Brady, state Sen. Kirk Dillard and state Treasurer Dan Rutherford (a combined 57 years of Springfield service) because political newcomer Bruce Rauner is a very successful, self-made businessman who is also running for Illinois governor.

Mr. Zlotow seems to be a fervent Democrat whose blogs on a local media website clearly define his political leanings. Is his newfound concern for the opposition a heartfelt epiphany in which he has awakened to find the state of Illinois in dismal shape on several fronts and believes longtime incumbent Republican politicians are the answer to the massive problems facing this state? Has he lost faith in the current state leadership? Does the fox have the same profound empathy for the chickens in the hen house?

Mr. Zlotow’s remedy for Rauner’s lead in fundraising and spending is a classic Democratic solution – Bruce Rauner should give each of his opponents a million dollars to give them some hope.

The price of art may be more than you think The upstairs toilet kept running. Because – when it comes to plumbing – I’m as useful as a pocket knife in a logging camp, I called our handyman.

“I don’t want to tell you what it was,” he reported after 10 minutes, embarrassed his expertise solved the problem so easily.

That’s why we pay him.

His education and experience make fixing stuff look easy. If I’d started operating on the toilet’s internal organs, in seconds the patient would have hemorrhaged, flooding the first floor.

Next day, someone called my wife, Tia, asking if she did ink drawings of people’s houses, because a friend wanted one.

“Of course, she’ll pay you,” the woman added, per-

haps expecting Tia to demur.

When I heard about this conversation, a slow burn began. “By payment, she probably meant a Peanuts card and a $10 gift certificate to Crate and Barrel. Imagine telling an orthopedic surgeon’s receptionist when checking in for a hip replacement, ‘Of course, I’ll pay you.’”

I should have stopped there, but the flames spread.

“She should have said, ‘How much do you charge?’ to let you know she valued your training and talent.”

Painters aren’t the only artists who get no respect; pretty much everyone in the arts receives similar treatment. When people discover I’ve published a few stories and poems, teach English or facilitate a writers group,

They think critical and creative skills descend like manna, not from what’s often long and costly academic coursework, as well as years of practice and study in the field.

tempt me to shake them until they cry, “OK! How much for developing the character arc? Whaddaya charge for smoothing rough transitions? What’s it cost for fine-tuning my sonnet’s iambic pentameter?”

When questioned why Winston Churchill wanted England’s arts budget increased while Nazi bombs fell on London, he responded that it would be to remind people what they’re fighting for.

As poet William Carlos Williams tells us, “It is difficult to get the news from poems, yet men die miserably every day for lack of what is found there.”

Sure, toilets need fixing.

But so do our dreams, our passions, our souls. Here’s a New Year’s resolution for

you – next time you invite a published novelist to “fix” your children’s story or offer a water colorist the chance to “do a little sketch” of your prize-winning mums, don’t assume they’ll be happy with a jaundiced happy face coffee mug.

Instead, inquire, “How much do you charge?” and be glad if it’s not as much as a new hip.

As of November, Illinois unemployment sits at 8.7 percent, fourth-highest in the country, while the national rate is 7 percent.

The state economy is gaining about 6,000 jobs a month, compared to the 18,000 jobs Illinois was losing per month during the height of the recession, said Greg Rivara, Illinois Department of Employment Security spokesman.

“That’s a big swing,” Rivara said.

Rivara attributes falling unemployment to an improved housing market, better debt ratios and increased consumer confidence – a factor helped by Congress’ recent budget deal.

He said he sees no reason that those trends won’t continue in 2014, continuing to drive down unemployment, albeit gradually, while growing the economy.

“You’d anticipate that growth is going to continue,” Rivara said.

Economist Fred Giertz of the University of Illinois agrees with the assessment that unemployment should continue to drop in the coming year.

But he tempered his enthusiasm.

“In essence, it’s good news with where we are now, but it’s not particularly good news with where we should be at this stage in an economic recovery,” Giertz said.

He anticipated that the national unemployment rate would drop below 7 percent, and that Illinois could dip below 8 percent, “if things go well.”

Some think the figure could be affected by Congress failing to pass an extension to its longterm unemployment benefits program, which expired Dec. 28.

Put into place in 2008, the benefits were providing feder-

al help to those unemployed for between 27 and 73 weeks.

Even if an extension had passed, the final tier of benefits would have been cut out in Illinois, eliminating those unemployed for more than 63 weeks from the program, Rivara said.

urlington Central girls basketball players descended on St. Charles Bowl for a surprise New Year’s Eve practice Tuesday morning.

Although she ultimately rolled the best of the 11 Rockets assembled, junior forward Alison Colby still admitted, “I think we left a few dents in the floor.”

The trip came on the heels of DundeeCrown’s daunting Charger Classic, a tournament in which BC absorbed the first blemishes to its won-loss record this season. Picking up splits seemed a natural salve after Central finished 2-2 as the only Class 3A team among 16 in the Classic field.

“It’s going to help us a lot in the long run, definitely, with patience and maturity on the court,” Colby said.

BC, 11-2 entering tonight’s Big Northern Conference East home game against Richmond-Burton, started 9-0 behind much of the same nucleus that steered the program to the IHSA Class 3A Hoffman Estates Supersectional last season.

With a few exceptions, the Rockets closed most of those victories with the outcome far from doubt and each starter on the bench, including sizable spreads against Harvard (47 points), Genoa-Kingston (45), Rock Falls (44) and Crystal Lake Central (43).

“Not saying that they were easy, but we were more relaxed and the win came easier. We didn’t have to worry and really aim to score at the end,” Colby said. “It was kind of practicing plays and different situations, just to prepare us for when a tight game comes at hand.”

Mother McAuley offered more than a dress rehearsal Dec. 26 in Central’s Classic opener.

Navigating a shooting display from Mighty Macs’ guard Elizabeth Nye – who drilled five 3-pointers en route to 26 points – Central entered the fourth quarter trailing by seven. It never came closer, as McAuley sprinted to a 9-0 run to start the quarter.

More of the same happened in Monday’s consolation championship loss to Maine South. Central actually led by five early in the fourth quarter before a 12-0 Hawks run quickly reversed the momentum. The Maine South game came on the heels of BC’s six-point victory against St. Charles North in the consolation semifinals.

“Every game was close or it had good competition, so we had to play strong throughout all four quarters,” sophomore forward Sam Pryor said. “So we definitely had to learn to play well together down the

Central won its first four postseason games by 10, four, 25 and 23 points before eventual 3A runner-up Vernon Hills scored a 38-31 victory in the supersectional last season. The Rockets played in the McHenry Tournament in December 2012, but coach Mark Smith was quick to act when Classic officials extended an invitation in the spring.

The Rockets aren’t done investing in their future, either, as visits to Class 4A programs South Elgin (Jan. 14) and Fremd (Jan. 28) await before the 3A postseason begins Feb. 17.

Fremd is 12-2 entering the weekend, including a fifth-place finish at the Montini

Christmas Tournament. South Elgin, another Montini entrant, took Geneva to overtime earlier this season.

“Coach Smith does a great job preparing us,” Pryor said. “He teaches us to never take a team lightly, and I think that’ll come in handy during the season.”

The Rockets realized playing at DundeeCrown would be a measuring stick before the tournament, and affirmed the same thing afterward.

A little less than 24 hours later, they went bowling.

“We’re trying to keep it fresh,” Smith said.

On a team that’s envisioned postseason success for almost a year, he might as well.

With Oakland excelling on the big league level – manager Bob Melvin is 237186 in two-plus seasons and also guided the A’s to the playoffs in 2012 – Scarsone’s advancement might have hit a temporary hitch.

That wouldn’t be the

worst fate for the Anaheim, Calif., native, who helps former Giants and Angels closer Greg Minton run an indoor hitting facility in Arizona during the offseason.

“Bob Melvin is very open and willing to talk and listen and answer questions and ask questions. He makes all of his coaches feel that they have an equal amount of contribution, which is important,” Scarsone said.

“Because just being in the room and not feeling like you have anything listened

to is frustrating, because we’ve all been in the game a long time.”

They can dance: St. Charles North drill team members spent much of their winter break working with – and impressing – professional dance choreographers.

A contingent of 23 North dancers traveled to Memphis ahead of Tuesday’s Liberty Bowl between Mississippi State and Rice. The North Stars earned their share of accolades before performing as part of the halftime show during Mississippi State’s 44-7 victory.

North earned a sportsmanship and spirit team award, while senior MaryKate Purcell was recognized as individual MVP. Dancers from high schools across the country put in a handful of eight- to nine-hour days training and learning choreography before the gameday festivities, which included a parade down Memphis’ storied Beale Street.

“It was fabulous. It far exceeded all my expectations.

It was so much fun,” North coach Nancy Prentiss said.

“The girls had a great time, but it wasn’t just a fun trip

for them. They did a lot of dancing.”

Harrell finds inspiration: Aurora Christian senior guard Johnathan Harrell fielded almost as many well-wishes as questions Monday night as he spoke with reporters after the Eagles’ third-place finish at the Plano Christmas Classic.

A little more than three days earlier, Harrell learned his older brother, Jarred, had died in a head-on car crash after watching him play at Plano.

Older sister Janella went to intensive care but is expected to recover fully.

Harrell admits the outpouring of support from the ACS community and other schools has made him emotional, but credits his Christian background for stabilizing him on and off the court. “ ‘Difficult’ is not synonymous to ‘destructive,’ ” Harrell said.

Then-Cougars manager Steve Scarsone sported a light black blazer to the club’s 2009 winter banquet.

The color was noteworthy because it wasn’t gold or red or any other eye-popping shade chosen by real-estate agents everywhere.

Scarsone had dabbled in the home-selling biz before returning to baseball, a former Major League infielder itching to climb another ladder. The parent Oakland Athletics offered him the chance, and Scarsone only keeps moving up.

He’s made stops in Advanced-A and Double-A since managing the Class-A Cougars five years ago. This season will mark Scarsone’s second in charge of Triple-A Sacramento (Calif.).

“The A’s have been great about promoting me and getting me up to the higher levels,” Scarsone, 47, said.

“The feedback from this past season was very positive.”

Sacramento finished 79-65 in 2013, two games behind division champion Las Vegas. In other leagues, the River Cats likely would have advanced to the playoffs, but the Pacific Coast League has four divisions and is tied into an overall Triple-A Championship Series against the International League champion.

A handful of players Scarsone managed for much of the season – first baseman Daric Barton, right-hander Sonny Gray and catcher Stephen Vogt – contributed to the A’s American League West title, boosting their skipper’s worth.

8SPORTS SHORTS Batavia’s Faulhaber bound for St. Olaf v’ball Batavia senior setter Audrey Faulhaber has verbally committed to play collegiate women’s volleyball at NCAA Division III St. Olaf (Minn.) College, Bulldogs coach Lori Trippi-Payne wrote in an email Thursday.

A three-year varsity player, Faulhaber helped Batavia to 20 victories and a berth in the IHSA Class 4A Addison Trail Regional final in her senior season.

St. Olaf – located in Northfield, Minn., and nicknamed the Oles – is led by longtime coach Cindy Book, who is entering her 22nd season at the school. Book boasts more than 700 career victories.

Sycamore, NIU alum Schepler back in NFL Jason Schepler had been working out in his hometown of Sycamore, just waiting for

another opportunity in the NFL. That opportunity has come, as Schepler signed a two-year contract Monday with the Tennessee Titans. The deal is effective March 1.

Schepler, a 2008 Sycamore graduate and former Northern Illinois tight end, was with the San Francisco 49ers during training camp last summer, and played during the preseason before being part of the last round of cuts.

He was used in the hybrid tight end/fullback position with San Francisco and said he will be in the same role with the Titans.

“I’ve just been staying home and working out, hoping for a call,” Schepler said. “I’m so thankful I got this opportunity in Tennessee.”

Schepler, 23, said he plans on working out at NIU before traveling to Nashville, Tenn., in the

spring, and that the strength and conditioning coaches have put together a plan for him.

Having earned one of Tennessee’s 90 offseason roster spots, Schepler said he’s in a better spot than he was after going undrafted last spring. Schepler originally earned a minicamp tryout with San Francisco, signed a deal and was cut before being brought back for training camp.

This time around, he has a roster spot from the start.

“It feels better knowing I’m

going to be out there for some time,” Schepler said. “It’s just a great opportunity for me.”

Blackhawks lose in OT in Crawford’s return UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford was good as ever in the third period Thursday as the Hawks erased a two-goal deficit and salvaged a point before Kyle Okposo scored in overtime to give the New York Islanders a 3-2 victory.

Crawford, making his first

appearance since suffering a groin injury Dec. 8 against Florida, didn’t face his first shot until nearly four minutes into the game, when he turned aside a Matt Martin shot on a twoon-one.

Crawford (31 saves) was relatively sharp early on, the only quibble being a few loose rebounds. He finished very strong, though, playing his best in the third period after Ben Smith tied the game 1:50 in.

That my glass is half empty.

That my fridge is filled with sour grapes.

But think of it this way: If it were your money, would you have written the check? Would you have asked Cutler to join you for a stroll down Tony Romo Road?

If so, why?

Because you lacked better options, at least in the near term? Because other teams such as Dallas and Baltimore had spent funny money on quarterbacks, too?

Or because you honestly, truly believed Cutler could deliver a Super Bowl title?

Cutler’s overall price tag of $126 million is frightening and Alfonso Soriano-esque, but the number that matters most is $54 million. Essentially, the Bears owe Cutler an average of $18 million for each of the next three seasons, according to Fox Sports’ Alex Marvez, and nothing beyond that is guaranteed unless the Bears retain Cutler.

That option would have bogged down the Bears’ salary cap in 2014, whereas this deal can be spread out to allow the Bears more wiggle room to sign players this spring.

“I can’t speak for every player, but you reach a certain point, what’s the most important part of your career?”

Cutler said. “Do you want to say, ‘Hey, I made X amount of dollars,’ or say, ‘Hey, I won championships?’ …

“We’re here to win championships, not to make so and so amount of dollars. That was my thought process. Wheth-

er it’s $15 million or it’s $22 million (a season), it’s hard to spend all that in your lifetime.

It was a funny line, which Cutler directed toward his celebrity wife, Kristin Cavallari.

She sat near the front corner of the room and quickly walked out with her husband after the news conference ended.

If the Bears decide to keep Cutler for the duration of his contract, then he would remain on the lakefront through the 2020 season. That’s one season longer than Aaron Rodgers’ contract, which is set to expire after 2019 in Green Bay. You know Rodgers, right?

He’s the quarterback with one Super Bowl championship, five playoff berths and a 9-3 record as a starter against the Bears.

Now probably would be a bad time to mention that Cutler is 1-8 against Green Bay. Predictably, Bears general manager Phil Emery defended his quarterback.

“Jay doesn’t have to be better than Aaron Rodgers,”

And there’s the key word: Championship.

If the Bears win a Super Bowl with Cutler, the price tag will be worth it.

If they don’t, it won’t.

In the meantime, for better or worse, they’ll be paying Cutler like a Super Bowl champ.

Cutler’s deal, which the Bears announced Thursday at Halas Hall, should help him cover the grocery bills for, oh, forever. According to the SunTimes and a ton of other media outlets, Cutler signed a seven-year, $126 million contract with $54 million guaranteed.

Not bad for a guy with one playoff win in eight NFL seasons.

Bears answer offseason questions quickly LAKE FOREST – When Bears general manager Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman met with the media Thursday morning, it was presumably to summarize and put a bow on the 2013 season, and set the table for a very busy offseason as prelude to 2014.

When Emery opened the session with the news the Bears had signed four-year contracts with cornerback Tim Jennings and offensive guard Matt Slauson, and a seven-year deal with quarterback Jay Cutler, the Bears’ roller-coaster ride of a 2013 regular season was temporarily relegated to afterthought.

The single-biggest question facing the Bears organization has been answered, and answered emphatically.

The championship hopes of this current generation of Bears players, and the coaching and front office careers of Trestman and Emery, have been entrusted to one of the

most controversial players in the NFL. Can a player still be a great prospect after eight years in the league? The Bears apparently believe the answer is yes.

There is no question about Cutler’s arm, release, mobility or athletic ability.

He has all the tangibles to make himself an elite quarterback in the league.

But why hasn’t it happened over his first eight seasons?

Some believe the problems have been his coaches and supporting casts. Others believe it’s been his attitude and personality.

Realistically, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

All that matters now is whether Trestman can leverage Cutler’s tangibles and help him perform on a consistent basis like a Brett Favre. Cutler never will be a surgeon like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady or Aaron

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Rodgers. That’s just not his style.

Favre won a Super Bowl and multiple MVP awards, and stylistically he’s the elite quarterback Cutler’s unique skill set most closely matches.

To his credit, Cutler insisted Chicago is the only place he wanted to be and that the only way he was wading into the free-agent marketplace was if the feeling wasn’t mutual.

Now he has to win.

will not prove to be his best position in the NFL. It should be good news to Bears fans that Emery now is acknowledging that, but there also has to be concern that those mistakes could be compounded by what they do next.

The GM and coach talked about finding ways to take advantage of McClellin’s “special skills,” and Trestman indicated that conceivably could be at strong-side linebacker either in the Bears’ 4-3 defense or in a 3-4.

Although Trestman indicated he thinks the Bears have the expertise and coaching ability in the building to play a 3-4, and that they’ll consider all options, it still is very unlikely the Bears make the switch in defensive schemes.

Because Trestman and Emery both were effusive in their praise of Lance Briggs and belief that he will continue to be a Pro Bowltype weak-side linebacker, it

appears that could leave McClellin and Bostic competing for the strong-side spot.

Although Trestman and Emery avoided making definitive statements about anything, both were adamant they will get younger on defense.

When I asked Emery if the natural extension of that was that it bode poorly for the futures of veteran free-agents Charles Tillman, D.J. Williams, James Anderson, Jeremiah Ratliff and potential salary-cap casualty Julius Peppers, he responded that wasn’t the case at all.

Because those four and Briggs are the oldest players on the defense, it is at best case a puzzle as to how the Bears get younger without replacing some or all of them with younger players.

Resolutions: Easier said than done This time of transition from one calendar year to another has a number of challenges.

There’s not so many occasions to write out the date since computers have absorbed that task. Even so, should you might sometime write a check or personalize a birthday card – it’s good to practice the new digits “14.”

Try thinking “Columbus” for the century with the two starting numbers or “Valentine” for that calendar marker for sweethearts.

Now, as far as resolutions go, it’s probably a good plan to pause and reflect on vows taken last January before investing in fresh promises. Did you really get more exercise? Were you less judgmental? Did the garage get more organized?

The corollary is that once you have done your self-assessment it is applicable to enter this political campaign season with a check on promises made in exchange for your vote. Hmm ... .

There’s probably folks who have been too busy for resolutions or who do not see

To those special people who were on the job while we were with our families celebrating the holidays, first responders, caregivers, retail clerks, food servers, snow crews, you have a chance now to resolve to relax and feel appreciated.

To those who market those pharmaceuticals and at the same time reveal a distressing amount of side effects, why not resolve to simplify the process by including the symbolic skull and crossbones and dollar signs to amplify the mixed messages?

Perhaps it is sour grapes, but someone should tell him that accessorizing raccoon with road kill skunk and coyote is not fashion forward.

Remember – it is 2014.

Farm bureaus donate more than $9K to food bank

The funds will be used for the food bank’s Milk to My Plate program, which has the goal of providing a constant supply of milk to Northern Illinois Food Bank network partners at a consistent, affordable price.

Grand Caravan continues as Dodge minivan workhorse Competitors are few in the traditional minivan class of vehicles but the competition is fierce.

Honda has the Odyssey, Toyota the Sienna, Nissan the Quest, Chrysler the Town & Country and Dodge the Grand Caravan. The Chrysler and Dodge products are stablemates under the Chrysler Group ownership banner.

There are other competitors that offer three-row, seven-passenger seating, but these vehicles, such as a Mazda CX-9, do not have the interior load capacity of 140 to 150 cubic feet of the traditional minivans.

Load capacity in the CX-9 barely surpasses 100 cubic feet.

One of the old traditional favorites is the Dodge Grand Caravan, a traditional minivan that has been on the market since 1984. In fact the Grand Caravan started the minivan craze and celebrates its 30th anniversary with the 2014 model. Ask at a dealership about 2014 30th anniversary trim levels.

In powerplant, suspension, interior and exterior measurements, the Grand Caravan mimics its upscale Town & Country stablemate.

Since it has less alluring trim in its base form (such as leather seating surfaces, power liftgate and second and third row windows), the Grand Caravan costs less.

Grand Caravan prices start at $19,995 and top out at $30,000 while Town & Country prices start at $30,765 and can rise to $41,500.

The test Grand Caravan arrived with cloth trim for seating surfaces, and, since it was a $26,695 SXT model, the front seats were operated by power and they were heated.

Other upgrades to the SXT from the base Grand Caravan AVP model were power adjustable brake and gas pedals, power sliding rear side doors,

All models are powered by a 3.6-liter, 283-horsepower, 24-valve V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine is capable of towing a 3,500-pound trailer.

SXT features an overhead set of roof rails that can safely carry 150 pounds.

The crossbars, when not in use, fold down into the side rails. A seven-passenger minivan, the SXT’s two rear rows of split and fold seats can disappear to create a flat floor creating a 144-cubic-foot storage area.

The third row folds backward manually and into a deep cargo well. The sec-

ond row has the company’s patented Stow ’N Go feature.

Pull a lever and down they go, flipping forward into the floor. Market research show the Stow ‘N Go feature is key to bringing customers into showrooms.

If the second and third rows remain upright, storage space is 33 cubic feet. With the third row stored in the well and the second row seats upright, cargo space expands to 83 cubic feet.

This is lots of room for a family of four to sit in the first two rows and store baggage, bicycles and other vacation items in the rear load floor.

The sides of this van are relatively straight to make storage of clumsy items easier. A 4-foot-by-8-foot sheet of plywood fits in nicely, for example when the rear seats are stored to create that flat load floor. A refrigerator would,

too. Dodge has not succumbed to the aerodynamic curvature look for this minivan.

Other upgrades on the SXT include 17-inch alloy wheels and a larger floor console.

Standard power features are heated and power exterior mirrors, power door locks and rear-quarter vent windows, keyless remote entry, cruise control, dual zone air conditioning and heating front and rear (three zones), second row seats that recline, fold into the floor or can be removed, an overhead console, front floor console, body-colored door handles and side molding and a six-speaker sound system serving the radio, a compact disc player and an auxiliary audio jack.

Fuel economy usually is determined by driving habits, weather and road conditions, and weight of cargo and occupants on board.

During the test week, without towing a trailer, the SXT model averaged 20.9 miles per gallon of gasoline.

The driving was equally divided between city and highway with two persons aboard.

Unleaded regular fuel is recommended for the 20-gallon tank. The Environmental Protection Agency has this minivan as averaging 26 mpg on highways, 18 mpg in the city and 21 mpg in combined usage.

Safety features include airbags in front, the front sides, the driver’s knee and overhead for three rows. There are active head restraints for all seven seat belt positions, stability and traction controls, a tire pressure monitoring system and a four-wheel antilock braking system.

This is a comfortable minivan with adequate leg room in all three rows. Obviously, the most leg room is in front but the second row also can comfortably accommodate 6-footers.

The third row is confining but easy to get to as the second row buckets flip up and out of the way via a lever.

Although a big vehicle, steering was tight and easy.

The suspension system with struts in front and a torsion beam in the rear kept the vehicle on an even keel. There was some wind and engine noise in the SXT’s cabin, but nothing significant.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles and five years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain and 24-hour roadside assistance.

The parent Chrysler Group officials are aware of the minivan competition but keeps its practical outlook in mind.

The Grand Caravan may be a little long in the tooth and won’t win too many points for style, but it is priced right, especially the SXT, and could serve a family for many years.

Julia Roberts is long past her days of starring in two, three, even four movies in a year.

Nowadays, by choice – the choice of raising a family – she limits herself to one starring role a year (2012: “Mirror Mirror,” 2011: “Larry Crowne,” “2010: “Eat Pray Love” and some ensemble work in “Valentine’s Day”).

It’s safe to say she’s the second lead in the dysfunctional family melodrama/dark comedy “August: Osage County,” chewing up the scenery right behind the devouring of scenery by her idol Meryl Streep.

Roberts plays Barbara, who she describes as the “oldest and least appreciated sister” in the Weston family.

The setting is the Weston home, where cancer-riddled, pill-popping, fouledmouthed mom (Streep) continues to dominate everything and everyone when the family comes together after dad (Sam Shepard) commits suicide.

Roberts recently spoke about her role as well as the awe and respect she holds for Streep.

Ed Symkus: Have you seen the film yet?

Julia Roberts: I just did, and I sat between [costars] Dermot Mulroney and Julianne Nicholson. I think I cut off Dermot’s circulation, just squeezing his hand with excitement to see what everybody did. It’s such a great ensemble, and even though there were a lot of scenes that we were all in together, my favorite one is at the bus station with Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Chris [Cooper]. To watch the way they did that was just heartbreaking. That’s why you want to go and see what your friends did so perfectly.

ES: There’s already a lot of talk about what’s being referred to as the “fish scene,” where you and Meryl really go toe-to-toe in emotional intensity. Could you talk about putting that scene together?

JR: The rhythms and the performance of it is terrifying. I think the word “fish” is in the scene like 175 times (laughs). But here’s the thing, here’s the crux of the biscuit, if you will. We worked our butts off, because there was no other way to do it. I’ve never worked so hard in my life! And I’ve given birth to three children! It

And we discovered that the only way to climb it was holding hands, whether we liked it or not. We would work all day, and go home and shower, then all run to Meryl’s house, and start practicing for the next day.

Because you had to have that momentum going, otherwise it would just leave you. And it was the best acting experience of my life. I don’t know how they did it eight times a week [in the play], without some kind of rehab after. Our experience was a treasure box of discovery for me, and at the top of the heap was Meryl Streep, who showed that it is about working hard.

Because I’ve never seen anybody work harder than she works. She doesn’t [just] snap her fingers and be a genius.

She really is just the hardest working girl in the room. And I was so grateful to see that up close.

thought we’d be together and having tea, speaking in fabulous accents, and all dressed up, looking very chic. And then there we were, and I’m sweating and I have on a big butt pad. So, that wasn’t what I had in my dream. But it was amazing, and I think that at the end of every day, coming out of the truth of the Weston family, and into our own truths of who we are together, there was always a hello and a kiss and an “I love you,” and that was really the elixir that I needed to come in the next day and to climb over the next table to choke her in the next way.

It’s very scary to do that kind of stuff. You have to feel really safe with that person. She’s not only sublime and superior in her work, she’s such a beautiful person that she sees not only what I need as an actor, but what I need as a girl in the world. And she provides all that, all the time.

ES: You’ve said many times in the past how much of a Meryl fan you are. Did the experience of finally acting with her live up to your expectations?

JR: To work with Meryl Streep is a

Low-tech solution gets good results for nosebleeds Dear Doctor K: My son suffers from occasional nosebleeds.

What’s the best way to stop a nosebleed?

Dear Reader: Many people suffer from nosebleeds. I tend to get them this time of year when the air is cold and dry, as it irritates the normally warm, moist surfaces inside the nose.

Most nosebleeds occur when a blood vessel in the nose’s soft cartilage leaks. If your son is like most people, his nosebleeds probably stop quickly. Sometimes, though, if the nosebleed is more severe, he may need medical attention.

A recent research study looked at treatment options for serious nosebleeds.

It found that simpler and gentler options work just as well as more invasive efforts. They also have fewer negative side effects and cost less.

More invasive options include using electricity or heat to burn a bleeding blood vessel, surgery to tie off the bleeding blood vessel, or injecting a plug of material into the artery to block its flow.

My colleague Dr. Mary Pickett at Harvard Medical School has

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff reviewed medical studies of nosebleed treatments. She tells me that a low-tech option – a good, strong pinch in the right place – will often do the trick. Specifically, she recommends the following technique to treat a nosebleed at home: • Nod your head forward. This prevents the flow of blood from going down the back of your throat.

• Place your thumb on one side of your nose and your forefinger on the other side, up near the bridge. Slowly slide them down to the sudden “drop-off” where the bones give way to cartilage.

• Pinch your thumb and forefinger together, and hold.

• Pinch with enough pressure to press both sides of your nose firmly against the septum – the cartilage in the middle of your nose. The tissue on either side of the nose puts pressure on the bleeding blood vessel, which is usually on the septum.

• If the bleeding slows or stops, you are pinching in the right

place. If not, start over, and pinch lower or higher.

• Hold the pinch for a minimum of five minutes before you release.

You may need to repeat this again for another five-minute session.

One final thought, prompted by a patient I saw not long ago.

The patient was in his mid-40s and had never had nosebleeds in the past.

But he had suffered from three of them in the past week, and they didn’t always stop with the technique I’ve just recommended.

I diagnosed a blood condition (low platelets) that, fortunately, was treated and cured.

This is rare, and blood tests are rarely necessary in people with nosebleeds. But even common problems can sometimes have more serious causes.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and have stopped smoking. I haven’t had a cigarette in over a week, and I won’t ever smoke again. That’s a promise I made to myself, and I will keep it. I’m a very strongwilled guy.

I still have nine full packs of cigarettes, and my uncle offered me $25 for them, but I hate to contribute to his nicotine habit. I had intended to destroy the cigarettes so they wouldn’t bring harm to anyone else.

Your opinion will be appreciated. – Kenny, St. Paul, Minn.

Dear Kenny: First of all, congratulations for being smoke-free! It wasn’t easy, but it was a very good decision.

One option is to destroy the cigarettes, and there is symbolic value in doing so.

Another option – since your uncle would get his cigarettes anyway – is to give him the nine packs and give the $25 to the American Cancer Society.

That way, the money would go to the cause of helping others who are addicted to cigarettes and who are eager to eliminate the powerful nicotine habit forever.

Dr. Wallace: I live with my mother and father. My dad is a good man and works hard to support my mother and me, but he finds it very difficult because my mother has evolved from a social drinker into a full-blown alcoholic.

She doesn’t get drunk every day, but she drinks every day and it causes my dad and me a lot of concern.

She admits that she is addicted to alcohol, but tells us she can’t control herself and knows she will be addicted until the day

I keep telling her that she can be cured if she would find help, but she says she is beyond help. Isn’t it possible for Mom to go to some sort of hospital where she can be cured of drinking? Dad and I would do anything to get Mom back to what she once was.

Dear Nameless: There is no “cure” for alcoholism, but your mother can join millions of Americans living an alcohol-free life as a recovering alcoholic.

One of the best self-help organizations to keep an ex-drinker free from alcohol is Alcoholics Anonymous. But nothing will help Mom until she wants that help. Do all in your power to get Mom to become part of this group.

I would recommend that you become a member of Alateen, a group that helps teens cope with parents and friends whose lives are affected by alcohol.

Find the local group in your telephone book.

Best of luck to you and your family.

Your story is heartbreaking, and I hope Mom listens to you and finds the courage to break free from her addiction.

My boss has offered to pay for me to have weight loss surgery.

Try to paint the wrong picture

One of the arts of defense is painting the wrong picture of a deal for declarer. He thinks the cards lie one way when they actually lie differently.

The International Bridge Press Association Gidwani Family Trust Defense of the Year award was won by Fredrik Nystrom from Sweden. The journalist prize went to Micke Melander from Sweden.

The deal occurred during the 2012 World Mind Sports Games (formerly World Team Olympiad) final in Lille, France. (These were held too late to be considered for that year’s awards.) A natural auction led to South’s playing in four hearts. West led his third-highest club.

The contract did not look too testing. South, expecting to lose at most two hearts and one diamond, won with dummy’s club ace (East dropped the queen, promising the jack as well) and played a trump to his king.

West took his ace and returned a low club. Declarer ruffed away East’s jack and continued with the heart jack. What did Nystrom (East) do after winning with his queen?

South, Cezary Balicki from Poland, the world’s 14th-ranked player, needed to get to his hand to draw East’s last trump. We can see that he could have done that in diamonds. However, East cashed his diamond ace, then led his spade nine.

To declarer, it looked as though East had begun with a singleton diamond ace. South, thinking that he had to enter his hand by ruffing the third round of spades, won with dummy’s spade queen and tried to cash the spade ace. East’s ruff was a considerable shock.
