had the opportunity to spend some time last week with Geneva High School student Kayla Mickelsen. Kayla also happens to be a contestant on this season’s “American Idol.”

In addition to finishing her

senior year at Geneva, Kayla works several jobs. She’s a baby-sitter; piano teacher; hostess and server trainee at Nobel House restaurant; and an ice cream scooper at Graham’s Fine Chocolates and Ice Cream in downtown Geneva.

Needless to say, I had more than a few opportunities to document her life in Geneva.

During a piano lesson that I sat in on, I could tell her young charges absolutely adored her.

Geneva is lucky to have such

an amazing – and talented – woman as the city’s ambassador throughout her “American Idol” and Hollywood journey.

BATAVIA – The Batavia Public Library has announced that its One Book, One Batavia selection for 2016 will center on fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.

The annual community-wide reading program was established when the library opened its newest building at 10 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia, according to a press release.

“The Hound of the Baskervilles” by Arthur Conan Doyle is the 14th book to be

celebrated with programs, authors and guest speakers, the release states, noting events are planned for February and March.

According to the release, the free programs are as follows: • A book discussion facilitated by Adult Services Manager Stacey Peterson is set for 7:30 p.m. Feb. 9. Registration is not required, but participants are asked to read the book in advance.

• The library’s Inclusion Movie Night program, which is for teens and young adults

of all abilities and their families and friends, will feature a showing of a PG-13 movie based on a younger Holmes at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23. Registration is not required.

• “Footprints of the Hound: Exploring the World of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the Baskerville Legend” will be presented by speaker Timothy Johnson at 7 p.m. March 1 as part of the New Lyceum Lecture Series.

Registration is required.

• A classic version of “The Hound of the Baskervilles” movie will be shown at 7 p.m.

March 7 and 2 p.m. March 13.

Registration is not required.

• Those Were the Days Radio Players West will perform the Sherlock Holmes short stories “The Speckled Band” and “A Scandal in Bohemia” at 7 p.m. March 17. Original scripts from the radio performances of 1945 will be featured. Registration is required.

Out-migration from the state of Illinois hits 6 digits

kcraver@shawmedia.com The annual stream of people leaving Illinois for other states hit a new six-figure milestone last year, according to U.S. Census records.

For the first time, the annual loss of Illinois residents to outmigration exceeded 100,000 people, according to census data.

About 105,200 more people left Illinois than arrived, according to census data released for the period between July 2014 and July 2015.

While an influx of 37,600 residents through international migration, and a natural population growth of 52,207 pared the Land of Lincoln’s total population loss to 22,194 people, Illinois still led all 50 states in population loss. At the same time, every other state in the Midwest showed a net popula-

“People don’t feel good about Illinois right now. They see the state as being on the wrong track. Maybe there’s a job opportunity somewhere else, or maybe the grandkids are someplace else.”

The hearing, which was continued from Dec. 17 last year, was held at the Geneva Public Works building to accommodate a larger crowd.

bschory@shawmedia.com Tom Fezzey said his first colonoscopy just before Christmas last year was no big deal – and the results showed he did not have cancer.

“They found one benign polyp and cut it out,” said Fezzey, 63, a Sugar Grove resident. “And then the doctor instructed me to come back in five years. That was it.

Theoretically, I’ll live a longer and better life – and not have to go with a colostomy bag.”

Fezzey’s results were good news. According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, colon cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in men and women and the third most common cause of cancer deaths in the United States.

Because screening by colonoscopy is the most important tool in looking for cancer and catching it early, a national initiative called “80 percent by 2018” seeks to have 80 percent of U.S. adults age 50 and older to be screened regularly for colorectal cancer by 2018. One or two of every 100 men age 60 years old today will get colorectal cancer by the age of 70, according to the CDC. A colonoscopy is a screening for colorectal cancer that involves a preparation day of no food – except clear liquids and Jell-O – and drinking a liquid colon cleanser. The next day, a gastroenterologist guides a scope through the rectum and colon to look for polyps, cancer and other disorders of the bowel.

The American Cancer Society, the CDC and the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable – an organization co-founded by cancer society and CDC, are leading the campaign. The campaign began in March 2014 during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

“If you are turning age 50 this year, talk to your doctor about getting screened for colorectal cancer,” Dr. Lisa Richardson, director of CDC’s Division of Cancer Prevention and Control wrote in an email. “Colorectal cancer screening tests can find cancer early when treatment is more effective and can find abnormal growths in the colon and rectum, so they can

be removed before they turn into cancer.”

One in three adults between 50 and 75 – about 23 million people – are not getting screened as recommended, according to a press release from the campaign. Geneva gastroenterologist Dr. Tarun Mullick, who belongs to the American Gastroenterology Association, said waiting for symptoms of colon cancer means it’s too late.

“Our absolute emphasis is on screening,” Mullick said.

“We are missing about 50 per-

cent of people who should be screened right now. I want everyone in the U.S. to get screened. I think it really saves lives.”

Mullick said as part of his office’s community awareness campaign, he speaks to groups such as the Kiwanis, the Rotary and at various churches. Mullick said his office does a big push during March, which is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, with blue ribbons and pins and outreach.

“I want to try to drive down colon cancer, and one of the tests we do is this. It’s very important,” Mullick said of the colonoscopy. “It’s one of those gratifying things, to prevent a colon cancer rather than give a diagnosis.”

While Delnor Hospital in Geneva, part of Northwestern Medicine, is not part of the initiative, practice manager Amy Eimerman said

the gastroenterologist physician group also does its own promotions for colonoscopy screenings.

“It breaks the unease about colonoscopy, [which is] rooted in fear,” Eimerman said.

“We help people get over that, coaching people through it.”

The recommendation is to get a first colonoscopy screening at age 50, but Fezzey, an attorney with a solo practice in Wheaton, said he waited because of his insurance.

“I would have been required to meet the deductible out of my own pocket,” Fezzey said. “Now that the Affordable Care Act pays for preventative screenings at 100 percent – without a deductible – it was a no-brainer.”

Fezzey said he supports the initiative to get more people screened through colonoscopy.

“I wish people understood how simple, painless, and how pleasant the whole procedure was,” Fezzey said. “I didn’t feel a thing. They treated me like royalty. It was a thoroughly pleasant experience from top to bottom.”

Census numbers are not the only ones showing a continued exodus from Illinois. Yet again, the annual survey from United Van Lines, the nation’s largest mover of household items, put Illinois near the top for more

people moving out than moving in.

The Missouri-based company’s 39th annual survey released this month showed that two-thirds of residential moves in Illinois were people leaving, putting it third behind New York and New Jersey. Fifty-four percent listed jobs as a prime reason for moving, while almost 20 percent listed retirement, which is telling to an extent because Illinois does not tax retirement income.

But while it’s easy to pin the increased flow of people out of Illinois on its sorry state of affairs, Yepsen said it is part of a long and ongoing trend of people moving out of the Northeast and Midwest to the South and

West. The most recent Census estimates bear that out – the 10 states with the most people inbound are southern and western states.

While lawmakers can’t legislate the weather, Yepsen said there are many steps they can take to slow down the flow of people leaving for better opportunities.

GENEVA – Two voting options for the primary election – by mail and early voting – will be delayed because of ongoing objections to several presidential candidates, the Kane County Clerk’s Office announced Thursday in a news release.

Early voting and voting by mail originally were scheduled to open Feb. 4.

The primary is March 15.

The release indicates the ballots and voting machines will be available by Feb. 17, the beginning of grace period

registration. By this time, most challenges seeking to remove candidates from the ballot should have been decided, the release states.

In the release, Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham stated that ballots might be available before Feb. 17. If so, he added, his office will notify the public through a news release, its website and its social media accounts.

“It’s unfortunate that the compressed filing calendar for presidential candidates and the circumstances of these objections will likely delay our receiving final certifications

from the State Board of Elections and affect the opening of voting statewide,” Cunningham stated. “Once final certifications are received, we will move as quickly as possible to finalize ballots, program machines and open for voting.”

Those trying to vote when ballots are unavailable will be offered an application to vote by mail or the opportunity to vote early when ballots are available, according to the release.

CRYSTAL LAKE – Strengthening the Affordable Care Act, improving the economy and establishing a budget that looks long term were some of the priorities laid out by five Democrats vying for the chance to appear on the November ballot.

The candidates for the 6th and 14th Congressional districts laid out their visions and answered voter questions over the course of an hour and a half at the first of five League of Women Voters forums, which took place last week at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake.

The candidates included Amanda Howland and Robert Marshall in the 6th District and Jim Walz, John Hosta and Jesse Maggitt in the 14th District.

The winners of the Democratic primaries will go on to face either incumbent Republican Rep. Peter Roskam or his challenger, Gordon Kinzler, for the 6th District seat, or incumbent Republican Rep. Randy Hultgren, who is running uncontested in the Republican primary, for the 14th District seat.

Howland, the chairwoman of the College of Lake County and a civil rights and employment attorney, laid out her main issues as putting together a budget and priorities aimed at building the middle class by addressing income inequality, minimum wage and Social Security issues, and getting Congress to put together a budget and take a look at the tax code.

Marshall, a doctor with St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee,

proposed lowering the age people qualify for Medicare to 62 in an effort to ensure that those who often have difficulties finding jobs still have access to insurance. He pointed to campaign finance reform as his other priority, suggesting matching donations for candidates who receive under a certain amount to help level the playing field.

The Affordable Care Act was a named as priority of two of the Democratic candidates for the 14th District.

Maggitt, a U.S. Army veteran and a business operations efficiency manager, called the Affordable Care Act “phenomenal” and called for strengthening it. He also pointed to making sure the federal government has a viable budget as another priority.

Hosta, a Spring Grove resident and business owner, also pointed to the Affordable Care Act, but he called it a “nice start” that needs to be improved, specifically through lowering the costs of prescriptions by introducing more generic drugs and allowing insurance companies to go nationwide.

His real focus, however, was raising tariffs to protect U.S. industry, a move he said would bring jobs back and has been successful in the past.

Walz proposed raising the minimum wage to a “living wage,” which he said would help the economy by putting more money into the hands of consumers, and strengthening Social Security, adding that, “Nobody should have to worry after decades of working hard, providing for their family, hopefully sending their children to higher education.”

Kane County sheriff works to replace aging X-ray machines

The St. Charles Township facility is among the county buildings affected by aging and inoperable X-ray machines used to screen visitors’ belongings, such as billfolds and closed containers, he said.

Kramer has addressed the issue with Kane County Board members, who supported his request to buy X-ray scanners at this week’s Finance and Budget Committee meeting.

“As you know, this is an emergency purpose,” Kramer said, adding none of the courthouses have backup machines.

He shared a report by Court Security Officer John Hammond, who evaluated the X-ray equipment. According to the Jan. 14 report, three of the seven machines are out of service, including one at the judicial center and one at the Kane Branch Court.

“The machine at the Juvenile [Justice] Center is barely functioning, can display only in black and white imagery and is unable to have a date programmed in it past the year 1999,” the report states.

GENEVA – Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois discontinued one of its two health exchange plans for 2016, a move that affected 37,000 patients who went to Northwestern Medicine facilities, including Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

Blue Cross discontinued its Blue PPO for 2016 for individual and family purchasers, spokeswoman Mary Ann Schultz wrote in an email.

“It remains an option for small group business and employer health care plans,” according to Schultz’s email.

“This is part of an overall national trend to move away from PPO plans that come with high costs to consumers and offer little in the way of coordinated care. Current Blue PPO providers were offered contracts to continue with our Blue Choice Preferred PPO.” Northwestern Medicine spokesman Chris King said the plan change resulted in a more narrow network of hospitals and affiliates that did not include Northwestern’s four hospitals, medical groups and convenient care centers, about 60 locations in all.

Center in Maywood and Rush University Medical Center in Chicago also were not included, King said.

“When we found out we were not invited to participate in the new Blue Cross product for 2016, we sent information to 35,000 patients across the Chicagoland area that had that product last year, that would no longer be covered this year,” King said. “We kind of blanketed the Chicago area.”

According to Schultz’s email, 173,000 members who had the Blue Cross broad PPO were affected.

“Those people could either choose a different plan or choose another insurance carrier’s plans,” according to Schultz’s email. “We strive to provide affordable, sustainable plan choices for our members.”

King said when a patient comes to Delnor for treatment, a procedure or surgery, officials are careful to check the insurance, so the patient does not have sticker shock from an out-of-network cost.

“We did not have anyone come through our doors willing to pay out-of-network,” King said. “People who choose these plans are trying to make a decision that is smart financially.”

I’m next in line to exit through a big box store’s white security monolith. My cart overflows with groceries, Duraflame logs and a new pair of 13-wide Reebok running shoes (whose potential I will continually disappoint).

Suddenly, a stentorian KONKKONK-KONK warns of a dense fog closing in, or a nuclear reactor meltdown.

“Oh, great,” I surmise upon reflection, “this bozo in front of me is trying to lift a pack of Juicy Fruit.”

Allowing the reprobate back up, I think about how much I hate this alarm. If not for being able to find nonfat, plain Chobani yogurt, mulch-sized bags of songbird seed and generic sugar-free cough drops under one roof, I’d shop elsewhere.

Get KONKed here, you want to throw your hands against the wall, feet spread and without your one phone call or lawyer present, confess not only to robbery, but knowingly leaving remnants of scrambled egg in the frying pan when putting it away in the cupboard.

Up until then, shopping had been delightful. When the employee scanning my merchandise picked up twin woodpecker suet bricks, we chatted about our respective back deck birdfeeders fueling squirrel obesity and high blood pressure, as well as serving up juncos for a hawk’s fast-food fly-through.

When the KONK sounded, I’d been imagining a Trump-Palin presidential ticket, putting me in mind of “House of Cards – Duck Dynasty Style.” Now, however, I think about the guy who got caught. “Poor sap. He should have taken a page from Mexican drug lords and tunneled his way out.”

My flight cleared for takeoff, I roll forward to freedom – when braked by a KONK-KONKKONK. “What? Who? Me?” I silently scream and turn around, expecting the Terminator, missile launcher lodged under stumpsize biceps. Instead, a slight,

All around me, expressions – more imagined than real – accuse me of meaning to topple Adam Smith capitalism and resurrect antediluvian hunt and gather. I smile, hoping it conveys the absurdity of the charge, not the shame of guilt.

“Over here,” Grandma directs me, cool as a school-crossing cop.

In a dim corner out of a 1940s’ Chandler noir, I expect moonlight leaking through Venetian blinds to shadow my clothes like striped prison garb.

She asks for my receipt. I remember throwing it into one of a dozen plastic bags, which I paw through like a coyote after garbage.

“Probably the shoes,” she says, scrutinizing the items like Madame Defarge consulting her knitting.

“How often does this happen?”

I ask.

“A lot.”

I wonder if a defamation of character suit would encourage them to fix the system, but, craving daylight, I give up the idea of challenging the only person who can release me without further embarrassment.

“Yup, the shoes,” she announces, passes a thick, gray wand over the shoes and sends me on my way.

Outside, I inhale escape’s fresh air and vow never again to buy shoes there. Maybe that way I’ll get across what I’d like to yell at that bully: “Don’t tread on me.”

Retreat on postal reform THE WASHINGTON POST The Senate could not have chosen a more appropriate title for last week’s committee hearing on the nation’s troubled postal system: “Laying Out the Reality of the United States Postal Service.”

Witness after expert witness explained just how desperate that reality is. In the age of email and text messaging, first-class mail, the Postal Service’s most profitable product, is in terminal decline: Down 35 percent over the past decade, according to Megan J. Brennan, the postmaster general.

Package delivery, though growing, is less profitable per piece and not nearly enough to offset the death of first-class.

The result, according to James E. Millstein, a former Obama administration Treasury Department official who helped government-led restructurings of AIG and Ally Financial: If the Postal Service were a pri-

vate company, “it would undoubtedly be viewed as insolvent.”

Grim as these financial facts were, the most depressing reality to come out of the hearing was a political one: Fundamental postal reform is moribund.

Yes, “stakeholders” represented at the hearing – postal unions, USPS management, paper producers, mailers – testified in favor of a bill that would accomplish two important objectives.

It would modify the current onerous annual requirement to pre-fund several billion dollars’ worth of postal retiree health benefits and shift Postal Service retirees from a separate plan onto Medicare, which they already support with payroll taxes. And it would extend a two-year-old 4.3 percent “exigent” postal rate increase that’s set to expire in April. Letting it lapse would cost the USPS $2 billion per year.

Reformers have capitulated on fiveday delivery for letters, even though two-thirds of the public would be willing to sacrifice Saturday mail, according to a 2015 survey by the Program for Public Consultation at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy.

No one is even talking about the obsolete regulatory structure that ties down the USPS like Gulliver among the Lilliputians. Instead, “reform” has been defined down to include such cash-generating gimmicks as shipping beer and wine through the mail.

FINDING THE RIGHT FIT Commits, future commits reflect on college choices

ccasey@shawmedia.com Colin Thurston posted a picture on Twitter of himself and Kyle Niemiec at Chuck-ECheese when they were in preschool for Niemiec’s birthday.

The two have been friends for a number of years and that friendship will get a chance to grow even further. Though both called it just a coincidence, both Batavia seniors recently committed to Butler University.

“It’s a cool kind of coincidence,” Niemiec said. “But we both had our separate list of schools. I always told my parents that I wanted a school that fits me ... academics first and football second. With Butler, I get the best of both worlds. Everyone told me ‘you’ll know’ when you step on the campus and that was definitely Butler for me.”

Niemiec was a Kane County Chronicle First-Team quarterback selection after passing for 2,753 yards and 24 touchdowns with just four interceptions. Niemiec is also the starting shortstop on Batavia’s baseball team.

Thurston, a linebacker, proved his value both vocally and by his play on the field.

His 95 total tackles were a team-high in 2015, also earning him KCC First-Team honors.

“It was sort of a thing where we both visited and were texting about it,” Thurston said. “I loved the school, the environment and guys on the team were cool. I texted

Krusz (Batavia), Pace Temple (2015 Geneva grad) and Matt Loberg (Geneva) as Butler Bulldogs next season.

Both don’t expect much given to them at Butler, though they’ve found success with the same mentality at Batavia.

‘Mom, Mankato’s the one’:

Justin Taormina knew instantly.

There were schools the Geneva running back had already visited and had planned to visit, but none of that mattered once he took a visit to Minnesota State University-Mankato.

After spending an evening with currently players, meeting all of the coaches, and learning that he could be an immediate asset to the team come the 2016-17 season, Taormina was all in.

Mudlong: You know, I think just being able to shot well in the morning and then coming back in the afternoon knowing we typically bowl better in the afternoon, that was kind of a bonus.

Druley: How come you guys usually fare better in the afternoon?

Fueled by senior Cole Cartee’s perfect, 300 game and a deep cast of keglers overall, the St. Charles East boys bowling team won the IHSA Lake Park Sectional at the Roselle Brunswick Zone this past weekend to advance to the state tournament at St. Cole Cartee Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon.

State competition begins today, with 24 teams and individual from non-qualifying teams comprising the field. After six games today, the top 12 teams and top 30 individuals will advance to Saturday’s finals, where bowlers will roll six additional games, three each in the morning and afternoon.

Kane County Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley spoke with Cartee and Saints junior Dean Mudlong about the team’s bid to improve on last season’s fourth-place state finish and other topics.

Druley: What do you remember about last season at state?

Cartee: I remember just

the excitement of the whole thing, being at state for the first time as a team. And so now, we’re going back a second time, two years in a row.

It’s going to be a lot of fun down there, and I expect us to do well. … Individually, I did not do too well at state last year. I finished with an average of a 170-something.

And so this year, I’m looking to top that by a lot.

Mudlong: I honestly remember just having a lot of fun, and I’m really looking forward to going this season with the team I have now.

Looking forward to having fun. For the tournament it-

self, I’m just going to make my own shots, try to keep my head in the right place.

Druley: To what extent has this season felt quick considering the confidence and the way everyone focused on state early on?

Mudlong: This season, I feel like now that we’ve actually made it to state, I feel that we’ve put in so much work and we know like, ‘OK, we’ve got this,’ and we can do well down at state. … Knowing that we deserve to be with the other teams that are as good or we’re as good as, we know it’ll be a little more competitive. There will be a little more nerves. But after the first couple shots, I think we’ll be OK.

Druley: How much did they

Cartee: I think they kept

the same pattern, and so it was just kind of the same shot for the two days. And then the pattern just breaks down over time. So there will be that time Saturday when it’s really breaking down.

You’ve just got to be ready for it.

Mudlong: When the patterns break down – I mean, I know our coaches help us pretty often – but usually, we’re able to line up pretty fast. It depends on what house you’re at, if it breaks down quicker or slower. … Usually we can read off of each other depending on who’s bowling.

Druley: How often do you guys practice with the girls team at Bowling Green?

VanWagenen, who coaches the Geneva competitive dance team, will take the undefeated Vikings to the U.S. Cellular Coliseum for the IHSA Class 2A state finals beginning today.

While the state competition is in just its fourth year, Geneva has its eyes on an unprecedented third consecutive state title. The Vikings are the only team in the state to have already won multiple titles.

Last year, Geneva opted to go the contemporary jazz route, utilizing Lorde’s cover of the Tears for Fears tune, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” which was featured in the second movie of the “Hunger Games” trilogy.

This year they’ve performed a pair of outstanding routines, one lyrical and one jazz. Both were exceptional during previous competitions, but the lyrical one should give them their best chance of winning.

“At our first competition we got a deduction for our jazz routine but still took second place,” VanWagenen said.

“We really only lost to ourselves this year with our lyrical getting first and our jazz getting second, so we’re fortunate to have two really strong routines.”

During sectionals and at state, teams are only allowed to perform one routine.

“It was a pretty easy decision,” VanWagenen said.

“We didn’t flip-flop back and forth. Even when we did the

Despite already bringing home a pair of state titles, the Vikings remain hungry for a third one. What helps is that their routine is different from a year ago. Plus, the team set a goal of going undefeated.

“They wanted to do well this season and get to state, but by the time they got their second and third wins, they said they now wanted to go undefeated, as well,” VanWagenen said. “The last two years we hadn’t done that.

We’d have a few bumps in the road, but by the time we got

to state it had all worked out.

Now, they’re trying for a perfect season.”

The team includes seniors Olivia Balsey Saltus, Diana Brognia, Elena Cramer, Madeline Emma, Mary Kafer, Mary Kate Kaufman, Nicole Rinne and Gabrielle Weron, lone junior Nicole Serra, sophomores Susan D’Onofrio, Alexis Pender, Carly Ruggeri, Julianna Severino, Mackinzie Sheridan and Lyndsey Gerbec and freshmen Kasey Murphy, Jeanine Wagner and Amanda Werner.

Brognia, Cramer, Emma, Kafer, Rinne and Serra have all been on the prior two teams that brought state trophies back to Geneva.

“That would really be awesome. It’s one of our goals and we definitely want to place in the Top 3,” VanWagenen said.

“We’ll see. Whatever happens, you cannot deny the undefeated season we’ve had. That’s something we can always celebrate because we’ve never done that before.”

“My body’s been beaten up pretty bad this year. I was out for, like, 12 matches, and my shoulder is finally back to full strength,” Mike Doranski said. “So just go out and wrestle hard.”

Dylan Doranski placed fourth at 126, as each of the Bulldogs’ 14 athletes finished in the top six of their respective weight class.

“You’ve just got to want it,” Mike Doranski said. “When kids really want to go out and they want to win for their team, they will.”

“The coaches told me they think I could start as a freshman,” Taormina said. “They said it wouldn’t be handed to me, which is totally understandable. I’m exited to work hard, but yeah, they said they could see me playing a big part right away.”

24 Adequate sleep essential to

mental and physical health

Dear Dr. K: Between my young kids and a full-time job, I’m lucky if I manage five hours of sleep a night. My husband says I’m running on empty. How much sleep do I really need?

Dear Reader: You’re not alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the percentage of adults sleeping fewer than six hours a night has increased by 31 percent since 1985. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Stuart Quan, professor of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School. He noted the many negative consequences of insufficient sleep.

Even occasional sleep deficiency makes a person more irritable and depressed. It slows reaction times and negatively affects mental and physical performance. In fact, 18 hours of continuous wakefulness has the same adverse effect on reaction time as being legally drunk. Adequate sleep also is needed for optimal learning and memory; staying awake all night impairs the learning of new information.

Being chronically sleep-deprived exacts a toll as well. One and a half weeks of just six hours’ sleep a night can have the same impact as staying awake for 24 hours straight.

Inadequate sleep also negatively affects your health. People who have sleep deficiency are at higher risk for developing high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and earlier death. In addition, inadequate sleep leads to increased hunger and a greater tendency for weight gain.

So how much sleep do you need? The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend adults get at least seven hours of sleep a

Getting fewer than six hours of sleep, they note, is associated with worse health outcomes. (There is not enough evidence to say whether getting between six and seven hours of sleep a night is bad for health.)

Why does sleep deficiency impair the functioning of the brain? We don’t know for sure but recent scientific studies have revealed a surprising possibility.

The cells of the brain, like cells throughout the body, produce waste material. This waste needs to be removed from the brain, and then eliminated from the body. These recent studies have found the brain might be much better at flushing out the waste when it is sleeping. If the brain needs seven to eight hours of flushing every night, but it gets only five to six hours, the waste could accumulate.

It’s not easy to get more sleep in today’s 24hour society. You’ll need to make a real effort to make better lifestyle choices. For example, choose to go to bed earlier in the evening instead of staying up to watch TV. Also, make sure you’re not doing anything to sabotage the time you do spend in bed. Exercise regularly early in the day, avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime, and keep your bedroom cool.

By doing so, you’ll boost the chances the time you do spend in bed won’t be spent tossing and turning.

U.S. sex education very insufficient Dr. Wallace: My 17-year-old cousin recently came to visit our family from Sweden. We are the same age, so naturally we talked about boys and eventually, sex. I was really shocked to hear how liberal the Swedish teens are when it comes to sexual activity. My cousin told me she has had sex with five boys and some of her girlfriends have been even more sexually active.

She also told me condoms are available free of charge both at school and at health clinics throughout Sweden.

She was really surprised when she learned American teens are so much more conservative with their sexual activity.

ester, Minnesota Devin: Not all countries have the liberal sexual mores of Sweden, but generally speaking, European teens are far less conservative in this area than North American teens.

The United States, however, has the highest percentage of teen pregnancies in the industrial world. Why is this?

Because the attitude in most European countries today is it’s all right to be sexually active as long as condoms are used to protect against sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. This message is conveyed in the schools.

The job of sex education in the U.S. still is left mostly

I even lie in bed at night and think of all the fun times this guy and I had and how foolish I was to break up with him.

But now I’m thinking that it would be best for me to move in with my dad and his wife. I can always move back with my mother if she ever decides to get rid of her creepy boyfriend.

When one is writing up bridge deals, one can get so involved in a particular theme that one can miss an alternative line of play or defense that is either worthwhile or better.

For example, in this deal from a world team championship, South played in two spades after making (by partnership agreement) a game-invitational jump guaranteeing at least a six-card suit.

West started the defense with his two top diamonds and, being an observant fellow who saw his partner’s high-low, led the diamond jack. East ruffed, but what did he do next, and has anything else struck you?

When one defender gives his partner a ruff, the card he leads sends a suit-preference signal to tell partner which suit to return after ruffing. Here, the diamond jack was West’s highest remaining diamond, so he was asking for a heart shift. If East had obeyed and led a low heart, the contract would have failed. South could have ruffed, but he would have run out of trumps before the clubs were established.

He would have won only six spades and one club. (East erred by leading a trump.)

Did you notice that West had an easier defense? At trick three, he could have cashed the club ace, then led the diamond three. If East had ruffed and returned a club for West to ruff, later East would have scored the club queen for down one.

However, this defense would have been fatal if declarer had 6-2-3-2 shape with king-queen-10-sixth of spades and ace-doubleton of hearts. Yes, that was unlikely, but West’s original defense was right because it accommodated both layouts.

Dear Abby: I’m a male in my early 50s. As a shy 21-year-old, I had minor surgery to straighten a small (but at the time, to me, ginormous) hump on my nose. I didn’t tell many people, and it boosted my confidence.

Although I can’t say I regret it, looking back I don’t think it was really needed. I met my wife a few years later and didn’t think it was important enough to mention, which doesn’t bother me.

What does bother me is my daughter, 23 and happily married, is complaining about the small hump on her nose and seriously contemplating surgery to fix it. She says she’s the only one in the family with such a nose. Her husband and my wife, neither one of whom are fans of minor cosmetic surgery, are urging her to not do it. I have kept my mouth shut so far.

I hate bringing something up I’ve kept from my wife all these years, yet I have this nagging feeling I’m betraying my daughter by not telling her she has the nose I was born with. I also worry she’ll find out and feel betrayed if I say nothing. Am I obligated to tell her? Am I a jerk if I don’t? Does she have a right to know about her father’s true nose? – Indecisive Dad
