Park district programs benefit mind and body

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com At Pottawatomie Community Center, it’s not unusual to see warriors standing near happy babies, cobras chasing cows, dolphins sliding alongside fish and bridges raising for boats.

What’s going on? Ohhhhmmmm. Welcome to the practice known as yoga.

What other fitness regimen has such colorful descriptions?

Where else could one stand as tall as a tree, soar like an eagle or sink into a chair?

This ancient discipline has been around for thousands of years, yet arguably seems to be the hot new thing.

Glamorous cover girls credit it as the secret to their youthful good looks, while magazines from Time to Good Housekeeping tout it as one of the most beneficial forms of exercise available.

With programs suitable for all ages, from teens to seniors, the St. Charles Park District can be a haven for anyone wanting to incorporate this time-honored physical, mental and spiritual discipline into their daily lives.

Yet many people are intimidated by the concept, carrying the notion that one already has to be as limber as Gumby before they can walk in the door.

Not so, said certified yoga teacher Nancy Wedemeyer, whose introductory Yoga 101 class gently guides practitioners of all ages and abilities through stretching, strengthening, relaxation and rejuvenation movements.

“Yoga is a practice that is available for everyone and anyone,” Wedemeyer said. “You don’t have to be physically fit. You don’t have to have a certain body type. You just have to have an openness to learning.”

This heightened sense of awareness of one’s inner being and exterior surroundings is part of what turns people who would never describe themselves as athletes into devoted practitioners of a fitness regimen that can be every bit as strenuous and challenging as the most complex, fast-paced sport.

This combination of might and mindfulness is the foundation of the park district’s Power Flow yoga program, a course that focuses on the progression of body movements and development of breathing techniques that combine to reduce mental distractions

and increase physical abilities.

“Yoga is great for building that mind-body connection,” said registered yoga teacher Kristen Kauke, who leads the program on Wednesday nights from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

“So much of what we do on the mat can apply to everyday life,” said Kauke.

“Yoga can bring relief and healing to all kinds of emotional issues while it also helps build strength and flexibility.”

Building strength and flexibility, of course, are underlying goals of many sports disciplines, from weight lifting to swimming, golfing to cycling.

They’re also the foundation to living more active and independent lives as one ages.

Aimed at both the serious athlete and senior citizen, two park district programs – Yoga for the Athlete, and Chair Yoga – offer ways to increase energy levels and stamina, agility and balance, mobility and acuity, to maximize performance whether on the athletic field or in one’s own home.

Indeed, yoga is a fitness practice that is supremely adaptable to age, ability, location and requirements.

Whether it’s the goal of building stronger muscles for a seasoned hiker, or the restorative support demanded by a stressedout executive, yoga brings an increased confidence in one’s physical body and an emotional and mental comfort that enriches every moment on and off the yoga mat.

“There is a wonderful saying that yoga finds you when you need it and yoga meets you where you are,” Wedemeyer said. “You don’t have to have a certain set of criteria when you start. Yoga will help you be the best version of you that you can be.”

DETACHMENT ISSUES Certain individuals are at increased risk for “retinal detachment,” which occurs when the delicate lightsensitive membrane (retina) separates from the back of the eye. People with a high degree of nearsightedness are susceptible to this problem because their eyes are longer than average from front to back. Others at high risk for retinal detachment are those with a family history of the condition; cataract- and glaucomasurgery patients; and diabetics (who are at risk for “diabetic retinopathy,” which leads to the formation of new blood vessels on the retina). While retinal detachment is a medical emergency, approximately 90% of cases are treatable. Early detection of symptoms such as the appearance of persistent flashes of bright light should prompt immediate treatment.

P.S. One warning sign of retinal detachment includes the appearance of an unusual amount of black dots (“floaters”) in the field of vision; a dark curtain spreading across the visual field; and new, unexplained blurred vision.

Campton Hills man declines extradition from Indiana Patzer charged in Delnor Hospital incident

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com A Campton Hills man, who was captured Tuesday night in Hammond, Indiana, declined extradition Wednesday to Illinois, Geneva Police Cmdr. Julie Nash wrote in an email Wednesday afternoon.

An extradition hearing was held in L a k e C o u n - Justin Patzer ty, Indiana, on Wednesday morning for 30-year-old Justin Patzer. He was charged with felony domestic battery, domestic battery and aggravated assault following an incident with a relative that caused a temporary lockdown Tuesday at Delnor Hospital in Geneva.

Nash wrote it was her understanding that to get Patzer back to Illinois, a Governor’s Warrant will have to be obtained from Indiana.

THE PUSH FOR FREE TUITION Obama’s plan for community colleges will face obstacles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com With his recent proposal to provide tuition-free community college, President Barack Obama has placed such schools in the spotlight.

And community colleges are glad to be part of that national conversation, Waubonsee Community College President Christine Sobek said.

Sobek, who also serves on the American Association of Community Colleges Board, said overall reaction about the president’s tuition-free plan has been positive and supportive.

“The president’s proposal is just a wonderful affirmation of the important role of community colleges across the state and nation,” she said.

Obama unveiled the America’s College Promise proposal Jan. 9 and again touched on it last week in his State of the Union address.

“By the end of this decade, two in three job openings will require some higher education,” Obama said during the State of the Union. “And yet, we still live in a country where too

many bright, striving Americans are priced out of the education they need. It’s not fair to them, and it’s not smart for our future.

“That’s why I am sending this Congress a bold new plan to lower the cost of community college – to zero.”

While community colleges recognize the benefits of such a program – such as drawing attention to the validity and the importance of the institutions and the higher education system – it’s difficult to say if they would want it, said Karen Hunter Anderson, executive director of the Illinois Community College Board.

“It depends on how it’s rolled out,” she said.

Because it is not yet known what might be approved – if the proposal is approved at all – community college officials contacted for this story had limited comments about the proposal’s feasibility.

“There are still many unknown factors yet,” Anderson said.

Nothing released so far indicates an age restriction on the program, Sobek said, expressing her excitement that it could let working adults upgrade their careers with a chance to return to college.

Should the increased accessibility to college lead to more enrollments, Waubonsee would be ready, Sobek said.

Waubonsee has expanded its facilities as part of its 2020 College Master Plan, she said, noting the addition of campuses in Aurora and Plano, as well as investments in technology.

Anderson said community colleges also would want to ensure students are college-ready and are on a career path or have a plan that would ensure their success.

“Priorities for community colleges in Illinois are not that we get more students but that we have success with our students,” Anderson said.

One of the “key challenges” of the free-tuition proposal is funding, Sobek said.

“Clearly, if the student is not paying tuition there would have to be that replacement of revenue,” she said, explaining Waubonsee’s revenue comes from tuition, property taxes and minimal state support. “Where would those replacement dollars come from?”

Elgin Community College President David Sam has expressed similar concerns.

“The challenge is being able to get the financial resources to make it happen,” he said when Obama first announced the proposal.

“However, with some discussions I’ve had with legislative people in D.C., there are some indications that the White House will really be pushing for this, and some of them think that some form of it may have a chance of getting through,” she said.

“I’m not optimistic that it will get through Congress but not as convinced as others that it has no chance.”

Two fires snuffed in Batavia KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Batavia Fire Department extinguished two fires on the city’s west side, one Tuesday night and one Wednesday morning, according to two news releases issued Wednesday.

Fire crews were dispatched at 7:44 p.m. Tuesday for the first incident, which turned out to be two garbage cans on fire in a garage in the 1300 block of Brandywine Circle, the first release states.

They were dispatched to the other incident at 6:06 a.m.

Wednesday in the 1300 block of Georgetown Drive.

No injuries were reported in either incident, according to the releases.

Fire crews at the incident Wednesday on Georgetown Drive found an exterior wall burning behind an air conditioning unit at the rear of a home. Police units on the scene used a dry chemical fire extinguisher to control the fire, the second release states.

Fire crews removed siding and drywall to check for any fire extension. The city’s electric department secured power to the home, its building department surveyed the damage and then the home was secured, according to the second release.

Structural damage after the fire was estimated at $10,000, and damage to contents was estimated at $1,000, the release states. The fire appears to have started in or around the electrical disconnect box for the air conditioning unit, according to the release.

The Tuesday night garbage cans fire was not considered to be suspicious, but it remains under investigation.

The fire first was knocked down with a pump can and then fully extinguished. The garage walls and door opener had heat damage from fire, but no cost of damage was provided for the incident.

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 recorded its highest mark ever in parent satisfaction during its annual Parent Satisfaction Survey, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

Of the 1,954 responses to the survey, 86 percent said they either were “mostly” or “very” satisfied with their child’s school, the release states.

This year’s level of parent satisfaction topped the previous highest mark of 84 percent, which was recorded during the 2012-13 school year, according to the release.

This is the third time in the past six years that the district has reached a new high mark in parent satisfaction.

The district has conducted the survey every year since 1992-93, the release states.

District 303 received its highest mark ever in parent satisfaction at the middle school level – 88 percent – which topped the previous high mark of 85 percent

during the 2012-13 year.

Among elementary school parents, the level of satisfaction is 88 percent, which matches the high mark reached in 2012-13.

The 79 percent satisfaction mark among high school parents is the second-highest mark ever, topped only by the 80 percent mark from the 2013-14 year, according to the release.

“Our thanks to all the parents who took the survey,” St. Charles Superintendent Donald Schlomann wrote in the release. “The feedback we get from this survey is very important to us, especially the additional comments where parents voice their concerns about some very specific issues. I read each comment that is generated by this survey.”

The survey was conducted through the district website – www.d303.org – during the week of Dec. 8-17. All district parents were asked to fill out a survey at the proper grade level for each of their children who attend District 303 schools, the release states.

When the woman went to a hospital the next day, she found out she had a fractured orbital bone in her right eye, court records show.

GENEVA – Kane County Coroner Rob Russell’s proposed budget amendment for 2014 is about to get another look.

The Finance Committee, which declined to act on the budget adjustment in October, voted Wednesday to send it back to the Judicial and Public Safety Committee.

The coroner’s office went over budget by about $123,000 last year. Officials have said the bulk of the extra expenses came from five areas – per diem ($32,220), autopsies ($37,705), DuPage County fees ($35,130), financial consulting

($7,600) and fuel ($7,212).

The coroner has outsourced forensic operations to DuPage County since mold was found in the morgue in June. Russell this week said he expects the morgue will reopen next week, on Feb. 6.

Because of the Finance Committee’s inaction on the budget adjustment last year, Robert’s Rules of Order prevented Russell from bringing a resolution about the overage to Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting Jan. 15.

The issue is of concern because some bills need to be paid, Russell has said.

The Judicial and Public Safety Committee is next set to meet Feb. 20.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County Board members have taken the first step toward cutting the sheriff’s budget in order to make up a projected $1.4 million loss the sheriff brought upon himself.

The Finance Committee on Wednesday unanimously recommended approval of an ordinance that would cut Sheriff Donald Kramer’s budget by $225,000 in response to the loss of revenue from the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

“This is really a short-term solution,” Committee Chairman John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, said.

The sheriff’s 2015 budget includes $2.5 million in revenue from housing federal inmates, but Kramer – who was sworn in Dec. 1 – reduced that population by 43 because of staffing concerns.

The County Board was not consulted about that decision, which equals a budgetary loss of $115,523 a month or $1,386,276 a year, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick said.

“It is a gigantic hole we are in,” board member Cristina Castro, D-Elgin, said.

Usually, Onzick said, budget adjustments are prompted by factors outside department heads’ control. In this situation, he said, revenue voluntarily was forfeited by the sheriff, so it should be balanced by an equivalent cut to his expenditure budget.

He said that amount is about two months worth of the forfeited revenue or about 10 percent of the total revenue budgeted for that program.

The ordinance, which needs two-thirds support of the County Board, also states the sheriff must provide a monthly report about the U.S. Marshal’s revenue and out-ofcounty housing costs to the Judicial and Public Safety Committee.

Onzick said the Finance Committee will continue to monitor the revenue and determine if more budget cuts are needed.

Castro noted more additional situations might arise, as Kramer has said he eliminated the office’s grant writer.

She pointed out that the sheriff’s budget includes $270,000 in grant revenue.

“This is a fluid situation,” Hoscheit said. “We need to work together to solve this.”

Kramer was not at Wednesday’s meeting, and no one from the sheriff’s office volunteered to speak when invited.

Kaneland preparing anti-nepotism policy

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – As Kaneland School District 302 prepares to update its policies, School Board members this week hammered out details on a new anti-nepotism item.

Last year, board member Tony Valente had requested the establishment of such a policy. He has said he isn’t against the practice of hiring people who are relatives or acquaintances of existing Kaneland employees, but he said he wants to be aware such relationships exist.

“It doesn’t mean we won’t hire them,” Valente said.

At this week’s School Board meeting, interim Superintendent Renee Goier presented a draft of the policy, which had been up for discussion at previous meetings. The policy would state that relatives would be defined as spouses, children, sisters, brothers, mothers or fathers.

Among the points in the policy: • No employee would be permitted to participate in the hiring of – or recommend the hiring of – a relative.

• One relative may not supervise another relative or work in a position that would control the function of another relative.

• Relatives will not be involved in evaluating each other’s job performance or in making recommendations for salary adjustments and other employment decisions.

• Any pre-existing relationship would be exempt, but if

the employment relationship would be changed so the conflict no longer existed, the policy would apply to future employment decisions.

• Pre-existing relationships could be subject to restrictions if they were to create difficulty for supervision, evaluation, security or morale.

Goier said at the next board meeting, set for Feb. 9, school policy updates would be presented.

Also at the meeting, the board received an update from officials with Cenergistic, an energy conservation company. The district has a five-year contract with Cenergistic in an effort to cut energy costs.

Dan Clark, the district’s energy specialist, said progress has been made with electricity savings, but there is much work to be done in the areas of natural gas, water and sewer.

Figures showed a savings of $10,235 in electric costs from September to November 2014.

However, Clark said the costs of natural gas and water and sewer “rubbed out” the progress made on electricity, and there were no net savings. The district pays $9,000 a month for Cenergistic’s services, and Associate Superintendent Julie-Ann Fuchs said there are guarantees in the contract to protect the district.

Board members said they understood it was early in the process, but they said they hoped that Cenergistic would involve students in the future.

Board member Peter Lopatin said he would not want to give “short shrift” to student engagement.

Cleaning out my childhood With no extravagant events in the near future and with the weather being a repetitive painting of gloomy-gray nothingness, the winter doldrums are surely upon us. So, on a rather dull, predictably miserable-looking Sunday, my mother suggested I clean out the closet in my bedroom to see if there were any items I wanted to give away.

OK, this will be an easy process, I thought. I bet I have a ton of unimportant clothes and old toys that I can part with.

I suspected most of the garments I wanted to donate were packed away in the depths of my closet, so I pushed aside multiple hangers holding my current clothes to get to the buried treasure. Within seconds, I discovered the holy grail of my childhood attire. Tops with gems and dancing monkeys bounced out at me, and capris with dazzling multicolored butterflies appeared. They all called my name, begging me to keep them hanging up for just a few extra years. So, of course, I kept them.

Don’t worry; I did manage to donate some of my old things.

Cleaning out my closet, I felt fulfilled giving away old shirts I hadn’t worn since the teeth in my mouth were still falling out. A few McDonald’s toys also landed in the donation mountain. At the end of my closet clean-out, I felt content knowing I would be giving a few extra goodies to children in need, rather than keeping them to accumulate dust.

And although I donated a decent portion of my childhood away that afternoon, I realized just how many items from my younger years that I’m not ready to part with just yet (or ever). For instance, since I was a born, I’ve slept with this

BEFORE THE DIPLOMA Denise Cartina “baby blanket” of mine. It’s made up of a mixture of soft pastel colors, and it even has buttons on it. When I was little, I’d clip the blanket on me like it was a cape. Thankfully, it’s still in good condition, because if anything were to happen to that thing, endless tears would be shed. I’ve also had this white, tiny pillow since I was a baby. It rests perfectly in the corner of my bed with me every night. If my parents think I’m giving up those two items anytime soon, they are so wrong. But don’t be fooled by my childhood hoarding, because I could always get rid of my Barbie dolls and their 30 suitcases of clothes right now.

However, I’ve decided to hold onto my precious Barbies and hand them off to my future kids.

I spent too many hours playing with them as a kid to let anyone else touch them. And I cannot forget to mention my most loved plush pink rabbit name Harry.

I carried that little guy around with me so much that he started to fall apart (luckily my grandma sewed him back together), so giving him away is never a possibility.

Ultimately, I have trouble giving away some of my most precious childhood things. I can only imagine how much tougher it’ll be the day I decide to move out of the house. ...

Apple’s domination shows no sign of stopping

By KATIE BENNER Bloomberg News Apple revealed blockbuster quarterly financial results Tuesday that were so big, so surprising and so good that the Internet strained to put the results into context, with one tweet wondering merely, “Did Apple buy the world yet.”

The company sold a record number of iPhones – around 34,000 iPhones every hour, 24 hours day, for the entire first fiscal quarter. Sales grew to $74.6 billion in the quarter, from $57.6 billion a year earlier – a jump that is like tacking on all of eBay’s annual revenue and then some in only three months. Profit jumped more

than 37 percent to $18 billion.

Yes, at some point, that kind of growth will flatten, or the margins will come in.

Apple’s markets will become saturated with jumbo iPhones, or a product line – just like the iPod – will become obsolete.

A new killer device will have to be found and sales will dip while the company tries to concoct a new, shiny piece of industrial design magic.

That’s what you call a cycle – the business world equivalent of the circle of life.

Worrying too much about it now ignores what Apple has done and why the company remains such an important force in tech innovation.

Apple has created products

that work so well that customers aren’t just snapping them up in record numbers; customers trust its products to ease them into tech trends that have yet to blow them away – such as fitness tracking and cars that run apps – and get them to adopt tech trends they’ve been slower to adopt, such as mobile wallets and connected home devices.

What will be interesting to see is how the Apple halo continues to light up so much of the tech landscape, then see what takes off and succeeds before that light inevitably dims.

Batavia resident Laura Cianci pens first book about. I decided to write the book that I did, that started in Chicago – where I am from – but most of the action took place in China.

So, all of the places in the book and all of the information relative to China is all authentic. If someone wanted to go to Shanghai today after reading the book, they would immediately start finding places that are in the book.

And they would also know some of the history of China, because I included that in the book as well.

BATAVIA – The storyline of “Silent Witnesses” – Batavia resident Laura Cianci’s first book – revolves around former FBI agent Alex Hayden, who – while in a town in central China – uncovers a research facility conducting experiments outlawed the world over and now has to find a way to get the evidence out of the country.

The fictional book was inspired, in part, by Cianci’s own experiences living in China during the severe acute respiratory syndrome crisis that started in 2002. “Silent Witnesses” is available as an e-book on www.amazon.com, www.barnesandnoble.com and through Apple.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to her about the book.

Eric Schelkopf: I see you reference the blizzard of 2011 in the book and the impact it had on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. Did you want to add a touch of realism to your book?

Laura Cianci: All the action in the book takes place in places that exist. Chicago is a city where the action started.

I just used some of my personal experience to give me the background for the story.

Schelkopf: Do you think by doing so that it draws people into the story more?

Cianci: I think it makes people feel like it is more realistic. It’s a mystery that is taking place in places that they know.

I think that it just makes a connection with them. And if they don’t know Chicago, it might interest them in the city of Chicago.

Schelkopf: How did you come up with the idea for “Silent Witnesses?”

Cianci: I’m a journalist, mind you.

And, as a journalist, I was living in China. I was a business expert working on the Shanghai Daily.

And then the severe acute respiratory syndrome hit China. It seemed like every foreigner that was living in China left.

People were walking around with masks on, and most people didn’t go out unless they had to go to work. Most of the department stores closed or had no business. All of the restaurants had pretty much no business at all.

People just stayed very close to home because they were worried about getting the disease.

So, I was in China and most of my work had pretty much frozen up. I had always wanted to write a book, a fiction book. I think lots of journalists want to write books but don’t have the time.

I sat down, and I thought about all the different things I would like to write

how a company that couldn’t do things in the United States or couldn’t do things in other countries could go to China and set up shop and not have the same controls that they would have if they were in the United States doing it.

The ideas for the story actually came from living in China, because of the way the government there tends to suppress information. The government in China tends not to tell the public everything. If you’re on the Internet, they block you if you use certain words.

It was sort of a jumping off point for a thriller. In the book, the government isn’t really doing anything to stop what’s going on.

Schelkopf: The book is getting a lot of good reviews. Are you surprised by how many people are really liking this book?

Cianci: I really was surprised at some of the reviews. I know there was one person who reviewed it, and he found he couldn’t put it down after he got into it.

Schelkopf: Are you working on another book?

Cianci: Yes, I’m working on a sequel to “Silent Witnesses.” I hope to have the sequel finished by the end of the year.

A reader who really enjoyed the book would end up wanting to read the second book.

Washington wine’s minerality runs deep It was a wine discussion that pleasantly evolved into a geology lecture.

When I sat down for dinner with Erik McLaughlin, the vice president of sales and marketing at Seven Hills Winery, located in Walla Walla, Washington, he raved about the unique soil and the impact it has on wines from the area.

Dark ‘No Way to Treat a Lady’ a smart choice for season opener

By TOM WITOM planitkanenews@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – “No Way to Treat a Lady,” the dark musical comedy thriller based on a novel and movie by William Goldman, proved a smart choice as it opened Fox Valley Repertory’s 2015 season over the weekend.

Though set in 1970 and somewhat dated, the play’s unseemly mix of murder and mirth presents the kind of escapist story that makes it easy for audience members to get carried away.

Director John Gawlik’s strongvoiced, four-member cast never misses a cue in this entertaining, fast-paced show that takes place in New York City where a serial killer is on the loose.

Ryan Naimy is a standout as the villain Kit, an unemployed actor hellbent on outshining the recognition accorded his late mother, a cruel woman who was totally obsessed with her acting career. He seeks to find notoriety in the press by going on a killing spree, strangling unsuspecting women while proving himself a master of disguise and adept at altering his voice to suit circumstances.

While posing as a clergyman, Kit strangles his first victim, a grieving middle-aged Irish widow.

Little does the woman realize how literal were the words of the song (“Only a Heartbeat Away”) he sang ostensibly to comfort her. Among other identities Kit assumes include a dance instructor, French waiter, cable repairman, pizza delivery guy and cross dresser.

The killer also develops a tenuous relationship with the police, giving anonymous phone tips on his latest victims to Detective Morris (Moe) Brummel, played by Christopher Davis, who becomes obsessed with solving the case and bolstering

While canvassing for possible witnesses, Brummel interviews the vivacious, self-assured Sarah (Kellie Cundiff). She is captivated by the cop who she finds graceless, not much on looks and no clothes horse, describing him as “a nice change of pace.” It doesn’t take long for the two to become an item.

Rounding out the cast is hard-working quick-change artist Flora (Carol Rose Durkin). She plays every one of the slain victims, as well as Brummel’s overprotective Jewish mother, into whose apartment he moved on a temporary basis when his father died – 18 years ago.

One of the funniest scenes finds Brummel, full of foreboding, introducing his new girlfriend Sarah to his mother.

The lyrics by Douglas Cohen to such songs as “I’ve Been a Bad Boy,” “So Far, So Good” and “So Much in Common,” while likeable, hadn’t enough staying power to linger long in my memory bank.

Dan P. Conley’s minimalist set felt a little cramped but got the job done and allowed more focus to be directed to Christie Kerr’s choreography, Marley Wooster’s lighting and Kimberly G. Morris’ costume designs.

Saints’ seniors return to St. Charles East, lead squad to state tourney

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com A memorable season for the St. Charles East boys bowling program likely would not have been possible if not for a pair of returning Saints.

Seniors Dom Strauss and Robert Olsen are finishing what they started at East after both spent portions of their high school careers elsewhere. Olsen transferred to DeKalb as a sophomore before spending his junior year in Peoria, Arizona, while Strauss attended a prep school in Montana as a junior.

The Saints leave today for downstate O’Fallon and will compete Friday and potentially Saturday in the IHSA state tournament at St. Clair Bowl.

Both Strauss and Olsen are part of the core five bowlers to propel the Saints to the state berth.

“Life happens,” East coach Steve Dessauer said. “We always knew about them, always knew what they were doing out there and the [family circumstances] and stuff and always hoped they’d come back. They came back with open arms almost like they didn’t miss a beat.”

Olsen considers East his favorite among the three high schools he’s attended. He said he lobbied to return to the area for his senior year, moving in with his father during the summer.

“I’d definitely say East would be,” Olsen said. “It’s been a good school. I liked it freshman year, and then just to come back and be able to bowl with the guys again, it’s really nice.”

Olsen was a JV bowler for the Saints as a freshman and said instruction he received when living in DeKalb helped him make a substantial leap toward the 200-bowler he’s become as a senior. Olsen and junior Cole Cartee have gone back and forth for the No. 4 and No. 5 spots in East’s lineup, while Strauss (216 average) and brothers Aaron and Dean Mudlong have paced the Saints.

Living in Arizona might sound appealing for many of Olsen’s classmates this time of year but Olsen said, “I love the cold” and was eager to return to his Midwestern roots. Once he did, Olsen impressed his teammates with the progress he’d made while away.

“To be honest, he was nothing special freshman year,” Strauss said. “He was on JV, averaged 160 maybe, and then I came back this year [from Montana] … and I was extremely surprised with Rob’s capability.”

While bowling was a club sport for Olsen in Arizona, Strauss took a year away from the sport in Montana after rolling for the Saints as a freshman and sophomore.

Strauss said stepping away from the sport for a year wasn’t all bad.

“It’s a very competitive sport, and at the level I’d been bowling at, I needed a break from it, so it was nice [to have one],” Strauss said.

Also an experienced wakeboarder, Strauss has fought through a labrum injury this season. He postponed surgery

until after the season so he could bowl his senior year.

While the Saints are unfamiliar with St. Clair Bowl, Strauss said the team’s adjustment should be eased by using the state oil pattern during practice this week.

They’re also scheduled for a practice session in O’Fallon this afternoon.

Strauss predicts it’s “going to be a scorefest” at the state

tournament, with Machesney Park Harlem and Rockton Hononegah among the favorites.

“I’ve got high hopes,” Strauss said. “I’ve been going around telling people and telling myself that I’m going to win state. It’s far out, but I’d love to do that. But I’d really like to place top 10, top 20 individually and I’d like to be top five as a team.

“We’ve got a very strong team this year, and we’re capable of winning it, and it’d be awesome to win it, but we’ve got some tough competition for sure.”

Dessauer said he’s confident the Saints will have some big performances this weekend, and “if it’s all five of them, watch out.”

Wrapping up their Saints careers in downstate glory marks a heck of an ending for a pair of Saints who have come full circle.

“I knew that I was coming back, Dom was coming back and that we had three or four good people that were still in line for varsity,” Olsen said. “I had a feeling we’d go far and at least make it to state. At least. This was our year.”

Still, Ralston expects an entertaining day of basketball and a potential springboard to future events.

Hosting an NHL preseason game would be among the rewards if Fox Valley wins the Kraft Hockeyville competition, a program that has migrated from Canada to include a United States contest for the first time in 2015.

Should Fox Valley earn the U.S. Hockeyville title, at least one Hawks player will be familiar with his temporary preseason digs. Finnish forward Teuvo Teräväinen, recently promoted from the American Hockey League, skated in Geneva as part of a prospects camp in June and has been part of similar events in the past.

“Even if we don’t win this,” Sobucki said, “we’re getting people excited about hockey in general, and skating.”

Until March, he’ll do his part to pump them up even more.

AURORA – The Rosary girls basketball team rallied to top Nazareth Academy, 33-29, on Wednesday in nonconference action.

Quincy Kellett led the Royals with 19 points and made all 13 of her free throws.

Rosary held Nazareth scoreless during the second quarter but Nazareth went ahead, 26-20, after the third quarter, forcing the Royals to rally during the final quarter.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Aurora Central Catholic and Wheaton Academy combined to attempt 17 times as many 3-pointers as free throws in the first half of Wednesday’s boys basketball game.

Before you go imagining how many 3s two Metro Suburban West teams can squeeze into 16 minutes of clock time, consider the Chargers’ Will Courter was the only one to go to the line during that period.

Courter missed the chance to convert a three-point play then, but the Chargers didn’t exactly exile him. Prone to live or die from the perimeter, ACC still channeled some inside chops to diversify things in a 58-45 win.

“I think we needed that,” Chargers senior forward Mario May said. “Those layups, those are hard-earned points.

Once we got it inside, it’s easier to go inside-out versus outside-in.”

ACC (9-9, 3-3 Metro Suburban West) fell behind by five points early in the third quarter, but quickly used an 11-0 run to seize control.

The spurt included a hand-

ful of 3-point attempts – the Chargers shot 7 for 24 from beyond the arc overall – but ACC did most of its damage behind precision cuts from the wing to the basket.

Early defensive adjustments from Wheaton Academy (4-15, 1-4), especially forward Evan Williams, warranted it.

“They’re a real aggressive team, so we talked all night about how we’d have to hit back cuts, and that’s just what we did,” May said. “They were playing passing lanes great, so we knew we’d have to do something different.”

ACC shot 45 percent to Wheaton Academy’s 38 percent. Warriors guard Bryce Sandberg led the team with 11 points, while Williams followed with nine.

The Warriors, who trailed by a point at halftime, opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 35-30 lead with 5:49 remaining in the period. Wheaton Academy, which lost its seventh straight game, scored only 10 points the rest of the way as the Chargers rotated smoothly in their 2-3 zone defense.

“That’s all we’ve been working on is defense, defense, defense,” said ACC guard Mac

Cowen, a sophomore from Geneva. “Just drilling it in practice and bringing it into games.”

Wheaton Academy returned home for the first time since the school’s annual Winterim Christmas break. This year, the Warriors’ sojourn included a trip to Tennessee, in which they lost 15- and 14-point games, respectively, to Ensworth in Nashville and Brentwood Academy in Memphis.

Warriors reserve guard Luke Manske drained two 3s from the right baseline in the second quarter, giving the team a spark.

The Warriors have won games by nine, 14, 56 and 40 points this season. They’ll get their next chance when conference rival Riverside-Brookfield visits Friday night.

the years a very respectful relationship and he’s done a remarkable job.”

And Belichick is a Carroll guy, too.

“Good. Great. Not a coach in the NFL I respect more than Pete Carroll,” Belichick said. “He’s a tremendous coach. He and I have kind of come up together in roughly the same era. We’ve both been defensive coordinators, we’ve both been head coaches. I have a ton of respect for what Pete does as a coach, how good of a fundamental teacher he is, the way his teams play.

Of course there are the other similarities.

Belichick was found to have violated league rules in “Spygate” and was fined $500,000, and the Patriots lost a first-round draft choice.

Now he is implicated, although not charged in, the deflated footballs incident, and many are calling him a

I guess they both are cheaters, but only the Patriots coach is being branded with the scarlet “C” this week. Is that because Belichick has won so much more than Carroll, or because Carroll is so much more media friendly?

Kraft is one of the most

respected owners in the NFL. Has he gotten there by employing cheaters?

Kraft doesn’t think so, and said this week about the latest scandal surrounding his team: ”I want to make it clear that I believe, unconditionally, that the New England Patriots have done nothing inappropriate in this process or in violation of NFL rules.

“Tom, Bill and I have been together for 15 years. They are my guys, they are part of my family. And Bill, Tom and I have had many difficult discussions over the years, and I have never known them to lie to me. That is why I am confident in saying what I just said.”

Carroll actually spoke out in support of Belichick on the under-inflated balls issue.

“I’m much better versed today than I was a week or so ago. I never checked on the whole process of how our footballs were handled until this week. I can empathize with Coach Belichick in that same way. I never have, so I

PHOENIX – It is impossible to experience a Super Bowl week without every story line and all of the minutest details surrounding every individual involved in the game going under the microscope and coming out analyzed to death.

So it surprises me that little or nothing at all has been written or said about the relationships and similarities between Seattle coach Pete Carroll, New England coach Bill Belichick and New England owner Robert Kraft.

Have we all forgotten that Carroll was the head coach of the Patriotss from 1997 to 1999 compiling 10-6, 9-7 and 8-8 seasons, making two trips to the playoffs and that Belichick was his successor?

Carroll is a huge fan of Kraft to this day.

“Robert [Kraft] was a really good partner to work with back in the day,” Carroll said.

“He gave me an opportunity that I will always be grateful for. He also sent me out the door, too, and I remember that. We’ve maintained over

Batavia grad Grizaffi a 3-point specialist for NCC Quiet maybe, but fearless and reliable are two better adjectives to describe Miranda Grizaffi.

The former Batavia Bulldog and North Central College sophomore basketball player is a valuable piece of the puzzle to a team that’s won 17 of its first 18 games, one of the Miranda team’s trusted Grizaffi 3-point specialists. The guard’s made more shots from behind the arc than anyone else on the roster and ranks fourth on the team in 3-point percentage, cashing in on 43 of her 136 attempts so far this season.

It means she’s averaging more than seven 3-point shots a game, but when you make better than 31 percent of them, that’s not a trend anyone wants to see stop.

“Miranda’s a really nice 3-point shooter for us,” NCC coach Michelle Roof said.

“When we saw her play in

high school, she had such good mechanics, quick release. And we knew that if she got the ball behind the arc, she was going to do good things with it. Coming in, she had a really great freshman year, especially in our conference. It’s tough to play as a freshman in the [College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin]. She made a lot of big shots for us, really in crucial moments. She shot the ball well, still working with her a little bit on the rebounding aspect, and she’s getting better, getting smarter defensively. But she’s been a primary 3-point threat, not just for us but in the CCIW, too.”

“Yeah, I’m one of a few [3-point shooters]. All we do is shoot the 3, everyone shoots the 3, but we’re the main shooters,” Grizaffi said.

“I started off really well. I was shooting really well in the beginning. And I’ve just kind of been in a slump, but I’m trying to get back right now.”

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber Roof said the team is constantly looking to get Grizaffi the ball, and it makes sense.

The sophomore has been making tons of long-distance shots for some time now, and she’s not afraid to keep shooting, which Roof said is the key to Grizaffi breaking out of that slump.

That fearlessness is why the team is constantly trying to get the ball into Grizaffi’s hands because an awful lot of those shots are going in.

“Whenever she’s on the floor, we’re trying to find her,” Roof said. “And she knows that anytime there’s daylight – sometimes even with a defender closing out on her – she always has the green light to take the shot.

From right when she came in her freshman year, she just doesn’t have any fear when it comes to shooting against

defenders. If she has six inches, she’s going to get the shot off, and she knows that we have confidence in her to take that.”

Her play might demand her the ball, but Grizaffi isn’t exactly the most vocal player on the team. She’s quiet, Roof said, although the coach added Grizaffi’s game isn’t quite as silent and that the sophomore is always ready to make a big shot.

“Well Miranda’s always been quiet,” Roof said.

“That’s one thing that from high school hasn’t changed too much. She really just kind of steps back and lets our juniors and seniors lead.

And we have really strong team leaders in our senior class this year, so she just steps back, does whatever’s asked of her. And when the time comes for her to step up and hit a big shot, she’s always ready and willing to take it.”

But even with that lowkey demeanor, Grizaffi said her confidence has improved

Couple that with all the winning the Cardinals are doing of late – they’re the 22ndranked team in the latest USA Today Sports Division III Top 25 poll – and it’s been a pretty good year for Grizaffi & Co. “Last year, I wouldn’t say we had the best team chemistry. Not everyone worked together. And this year, everything is just clicking,” Grizaffi said. “The freshmen that came in, they picked it up really quick. Last year, I don’t think we picked it up as quick. Everything has just clicked this year. Myself individually, my confidence has gone up a lot this year from last year.”

Whenever I have a cold, I reach for whichever medication treats the most symptoms. My wife says that’s not safe, even if the medication is available over the counter.

Is she right?

Dear Reader: Your wife is correct. Clearly, you should listen to her more often.

Painkillers, decongestants, antihistamines and combination remedies – even those available over the counter – can sometimes cause health problems. They can interact with other drugs and can interfere with existing conditions.

When choosing a cold medication, read the list of active ingredients. Older adults in particular should pay close attention to the following: • Decongestants narrow blood vessels, which can help reduce inflammation in your nasal passages.

The risk – decongestants are also stimulants, which means they can increase your blood pressure. They can increase your heart rate and cause anxiety or insomnia. These drugs can cause problems for people with heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes. That’s because in-

What to do – check with your doctor or pharmacist before using them.

What to do – do not take more than the recommended dose listed on the product. Also, don’t take high doses for several days.

If you’re taking a combination drug, check the ingredients for acetaminophen. If it’s listed, don’t take any other drugs that contain acetaminophen. And don’t have more than one alcoholic drink a day while taking acetaminophen.

• Antihistamines decrease the production of histamine, a substance that leads to runny nose, watery eyes and sneezing.

They can make you sleepy and are frequently found in nighttime cold remedies to help you sleep.

The risk – older adults don’t break down this medication well.

If you take it at night, you might feel groggy and confused even hours later. This can lead to falls and injuries when you get up to urinate in the middle of the night, or in the morning on awakening.

What to do – avoid medications with antihistamines, unless your doctor says they’re OK. Finally, a word about combination medicines. These drugs contain several medications in one dose. They may include a painkiller, a cough suppressant and a decongestant. But you may not need all of the medications. Treating symptoms you don’t have exposes you to medicine you don’t need. That unnecessarily puts you at risk for side effects. To minimize the risk, choose cold remedies that treat only the symptoms you have.

Don’t allow the father to return Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and have a 9-month-old son. The baby’s father (we’re not married) also lived with us because I thought I loved him. He was verbally abusive to me. He’s also involved with drugs, both as a user and a seller.

About a month ago I kicked him out because he refused to stop smoking in the house. I refuse to have my son breathing secondhand smoke.

I have since moved in with my grandmother, and I have a good parttime job. Granny is an excellent sitter and really loves baby Tyler. I’m really happy for the first time in a long time.

Last week, my son’s father called and said that he wanted us to be a family again and that he has eliminated all his bad habits – smoking and drugs. He said he would get an “honest” job if I took him back and that he misses our son. I really don’t know what to do. Dear Nameless: Fasting, especially for teens, is not recommended for weight reduction. All fasting diets involve the loss of muscle tissue as well as fat. This could be dangerous during the teen years, when the body is developing and undergoing rapid growth spurts. It should be adding, not subtracting, lean tissue. There is also evidence that fasting may produce a loss of bone tissue and, again, teens run the risk of stunting their natural growth.

A regimen of proper exercise, diet and rest may take a little longer, but it’s the safest weight-loss method.

Over the last two days, we have seen that defensive leads in the middle of a deal may transmit important information. But that is, of course, also true of the opening lead. It should throw light on the leader’s holding in that suit.

In this deal, for example, what should West lead against three no-trump?

Inexperienced players holding that North hand always want to show their diamond suit. When asked if they want to play in five diamonds, rather than in three no-trump, their answer is usually along these lines: “Oh, no, but I just wanted to tell my partner about my suit. I will bid three no-trump next.”

This, of course, is illogical thinking. You mention a suit when you think it could be the right strain for the final contract. Here, there are far, far more deals in which three no-trump makes and five diamonds fails, than the converse.

Length rules in no-trump. West should lead a heart, not a spade.

But as the suit is so weak, he must choose the nine, top of nothing.

This should steer East in the right direction. South will presumably take the first trick and run the diamond nine. East might duck this trick and take the next with his diamond king, but then he ought to shift to the spade 10. Here that works beautifully, gaining the defenders one heart and four spades.

Remember to lead high from an unbid suit without an honor in that suit.
