Ready for the next chapter Breisch looks back on nearly a decade with Batavia Chamber of Commerce

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Roger Breisch is about to leave the top Batavia Chamber of Commerce post, but you wouldn’t know it by the way he speaks so enthusiastically about the organization’s future.

The chamber website is undergoing its second relaunch in eight years (the first was in 2006) to allow for better integration with Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, Breisch said, as he was sitting in the chamber office in downtown Batavia. Breisch, 62, said social media is something that will play a bigger role for the chamber and local businesses, and he is ready to have someone else lead the way for that and other initiatives.

Breisch has decided to leave the chamber after nearly a decade as executive director. Batavia Access Television Station Manager Holly Deitchman was announced Jan. 22 as Breisch’s successor. His final day on the job will be Friday.

While Breisch figures out the next chapter of his life, he is content with knowing that many businesses over the years wanted to invest in the organization.

“As we brought value to the community, people just naturally showed up and said, ‘That’s what I would like to be a part of,’” Breisch said.

One of the ways Breisch made the chamber an enticing brand was to help start the Batavia Women in Business group. The St. Charles Chamber of Commerce urged Breisch to start a women’s group in Batavia because the St. Charles women’s group was a success. Breisch reached out to businesswoman Jeanne Harms about forming the group, and eventually Batavia Women in Business held its first lunch event in February 2005.

Breisch worked hard to bring businesses from Batavia’s eastside industrial park to the chamber, Harms said.

She also spoke of his ability to bring the chamber and government entities together.

Breisch estimates that he attended at least 200 Batavia City Council meetings since he joined the chamber in July 2004. He praised the council, city staff and Batavia MainStreet for the support of businesses, especially during the Wilson Street Bridge reconstruction in 2007 and 2008.

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said the same for Breisch in December, saying Breisch “has been a driving force on the whole idea of downtown redevelopment and strengthening the city’s industrial base. He has helped us see wider horizons.”

Breisch showed the city a different perspective through his philosophical front-page

columns in the Batavia Chamber newsletter. The larger questions of “Why we do what we do?” and “What is the meaning of business?” perplexed some but were praised by others, Breisch said.

Attorney Kevin Drendel, partner at Drendel & Jansons Law Group in Batavia, was one of the people who looked forward to reading Breisch’s column. He connected with Breisch’s message that there is more to life than making money.

“Roger has a business background, but he brought a much bigger picture of the world to the chamber of commerce than simply a business focus, and I liked that. That drew me in,” Drendel said.

Even with his achievements, Breisch said that despite chamber membership growing over the years, it did not grow to his expectations.

When he started in 2004, there were 200 members, and as of January 2014 there were about 280. With a pre-recession peak of 350 members in

2007, Breisch said he wished there were currently 400 members or more.

Breisch suspects there might be a disconnect between himself and some business owners because of his philosophical take, but he doesn’t get to hear about

it much.

“Life is short – if you have something to say, say it,” Breisch said of his columns.

As Breisch looks to do more writing and decides his next move, he is confident that Deitchman will lead the chamber in the right direction. He considers Deitchman a friend and said she will do well because she knows practically everybody in Batavia.

Indeed, he said it is those very residents that will make saying goodbye hard for him.

“I think I’ll miss the people in the chamber, the members, more than anything else,” Breisch said.

Batavia School Board votes to drop out of online consortium

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Voicing concerns about the $96,450 price tag, Batavia School Board members Tuesday voted 4-3 to drop out of a consortium designed to provide online learning opportunities for students.

Batavia School District 101 is the second school district to drop out of the consortium.

Earlier this month, Kaneland School District 302 voted against remaining in the consortium because of the high cost of participation to move on to the second phase of the consortium.

Voting “yes” were Batavia School Board members Melanie Impastato, Jason Stoops and Sue Locke. Voting “no” were Batavia School Board President Cathy Dremel, Vice President Gregg Hodge and board members Jon Gaspar and Tina Bleakley.

Locke took several minutes before casting her vote.

While she also was concerned about the cost, Locke said it was an important initiative.

“I think it is important that we do some kind of online blended learning,” she said.

Gaspar also agreed with the importance of the initiative.

“I think it is a great start-

ing point,” he said.

After voting to drop out of the consortium, Batavia School Board members directed staff to explore other options.

“I do believe there are other options out there in terms of partnering with different districts,” said Brad Newkirk, the district’s chief academic officer.

Batavia school board members had previously voted to enter into an intergovernmental agreement with Kaneland School District 302, Indian Prairie School District 204, Naperville Community Unit School District 203 and Wheaton-Warrenville Unit School District 200 as part of an online/blended learning consortium. Batavia was the first district to sign the agreement.

The topic of online learning came up last spring after Batavia and other school districts in the area rejected a proposal by Virtual Learning Solutions to start an online charter school. Batavia School District 101 had raised several concerns, including that the proposal did not contain goals or pupil performance standards to be achieved by the charter school and that the proposal failed to demonstrate that the terms were economically sound for the charter school and the district.

She loved to travel and recently visited South Africa with her Comparative Human Rights class, a very moving experience for her. She also loved animals and was an avid gardener.

She is survived by her beloved husband, David; her children, Hannah Ressinger of New York and George Ressinger of St. Charles; her parents, Bert and Pat Higgins;

Autopsies conducted

through the coroner’s office can provide insight into what caused the death, Assistant State’s Attorney Joe Cullen said. For example, he said, it can show whether illegal or prescription drugs were involved; whether the death was a result of an overdose or heart attack; and, in car crashes, the angle of impact.

Certain elements – such as

toxicology reports – can take a few weeks before the results are known, she said.

Cullen noted that in his 20-plus years of experience, he has never experienced a problem between the police and coroner. Aurora Police Chief Greg Thomas said his staff also reported a positive relationship with the coroner.

Russell, who is in his second year as coroner, said he was happy to hear that.

“There is no issue between me and law enforcement,” he said.

Village officials approved an economic development agreement with Ace developer Mark Driscoll of DriBar Illinois LLC, Batavia, where it will pay $10,000 of the required $19,000 Kane County Road Impact Fee. The agreement also provides that the 1 percent general sales tax will be forwarded to the developer at a rate of 100 percent the first two years; at 75 percent in the third, fourth and fifth years; and at 25 percent for the sixth and seventh years.

Eichelberger said the maximum in the sales tax provided would be $100,000.

Driscoll was unavailable for comment, but in the economic development agreement, he said that without the support from the village, the Ace project would not be possible.

The village is projected to retain $122,500 in new sales tax revenue during the first seven years of Ace being open.

Eichelberger said the village will receive 100 percent of its nonhome-rule sales tax, which is also levied at 1 percent.

Electrical fire damages apartment in Batavia

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – No one was injured in an electrical fire Tuesday afternoon at the Lorlyn of Batavia Apartments.

Firefighters at 3:24 p.m. responded to the fire at 1005 Lorlyn Circle in Batavia, on the apartment complex’s third floor. Damage was estimated at $600 to the apartment and $1,000 to its contents.

When firefighters arrived,

the occupants had already put out the fire, which had started under a bed. There were two people in the apartment at the time.

“There was significant smoke,” Batavia Fire Chief Randy Banker said.

Banker said it appears that moisture and water caused an unused outlet to arch, catching a comforter and other material on fire. He warned residents to “always keep furniture and other items away from outlets.”

After the seventh year of sharing general sales tax with the developer, the village will receive 100 percent of the sales tax.

Eichelberger said a fair projection once the store is in its eighth year would be $30,000 to $40,000 a year in sales tax revenue.

“That is significant for the village,” Eichelberger said.

Interim Economic Development Director Walter Magdziarz said though the company has not committed to a specific number of employees, the estimate is 25 to 30.

“To be open by July 1 is the desired goal,” Magdziarz said. “And then have a formal grand opening by Labor Day.”

SUGAR GROVE – When an Ace Hardware store opens in Sugar Grove this summer, residents no longer will have to trek to other municipalities to pick up hammers, saws or water heaters.

The 16,040-square-foot building is planned for 160 E. Galena Blvd., the northwest corner of Galena Boulevard and Capitol Drive.

It will be the village’s first hardware store of any kind, on track to be built and open

by July 1, officials said.

“It’s very exciting,” Village Administrator Brent Eichelberger said. “It’s significant for the village.”

To illustrate the local need, Eichelberger said he had to buy a bolt two months ago.

He went to the three big box stores – and they did not have it.

“I went to Ace in Batavia on Randall and told the guy what I wanted. He said, ‘Follow me – here you go,’” Eichelberger said. “They had exactly what I was looking for. I thought that was kind of interesting.”

In addition to the traditional items at a hardware store, Sugar Grove’s Ace is expected to have a robust lawn and garden section, as well as a pet food supply area that will emphasize premium products, Eichelberger said.

Four seek GOP nomination for 50th District

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com There will be no shortage of candidates vying to succeed retiring state legislator Kay Hatcher in the Illinois House of Representatives.

The March 18 primary will decide which of the four Republican candidates – Julie Cosimo of Oswego, Beth Goncher of Aurora, Keith Wheeler of Oswego and Bill Keck of Sugar Grove – will compete for the 50th District state representative post in November’s general election.

Former Yorkville mayor Valerie Burd is the sole Democrat seeking the office.

Wheeler, a 46-year-old small business owner, challenged Hatcher in the 2010 primary. He said the issues that were critical four years

ago remain critical. Illinois, he said, needs to create more jobs. His work with the Kendall County Food Pantry – he chairs the board of directors – has brought him closer to the issue, he said.

“I see the numbers,” he said.

Wheeler said he has developed a four-pronged plan, which he will release under the title “Illinois Jobs for Illinois Families.” Components include making Illinois affordable for business and conducting a forensic audit of state spending, he said.

Goncher, 43, also wants to focus on jobs.

The single mother said she has seen jobs in Illinois disappear as her teenage son has grown.

Through her work as a longtime legislative aide for State Rep. Tim Schmitz, Goncher said she understands how the legislative process works, knows the issues and knows how people

feel about the issues.

Cosimo, meanwhile, oversees the career development office at Benedictine University and helps students and alumni get into the workforce. She founded and ran a small business earlier in her career.

“I know what challenges small business owners go through,” she said.

A strong education system is key to developing an attractive and successful workforce, said Cosimo, 47.

She said she would be dedicated to creating legislation establishing a comprehensive workforce readiness and job creation plan that prepares individuals to enter the workforce and meets the needs of employers.

Because of a broken ankle, Cosimo said she hasn’t been as visible in the cam-

paign as she would like to be. She noted she intends to quit her full-time job if elected.

Keck, who served as Kane County auditor for 20 years, believes his auditing experience can make a difference, he said.

He noted his concern about the state’s finances prompted him to run for state representative.

Other issues Keck, 74, said he would like to tackle include pension reform, balancing the budget and improving efficiency. He expects he would be able to work across the aisle, he said.

“Hopefully, I can be effective,” Keck said.

The 50th District covers much of southwest Kane County and northern Kendall County.

Busy building

Sports, community events, tests keep middle school site buzzing

alagattolla@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – When Elburn Boy Scout Troop 107 needed a new space for its meetings and its pinewood derby, it found a perfect spot that many other local groups are using – the building that previously was Kaneland Middle School.

Chuck Miller, the troop’s chairman for the derby, called it “a great space for what we’re doing.”

“The old venue just wasn’t working out, and this was available,” Miller said. “It turned out to be a great space.

It’s wide open with plenty of room. It’s working out perfectly for us.”

The building, which sits on the campus of Kaneland High School at Meredith and Keslinger roads, no longer functions as a middle school, but it is full of life nonetheless. Community groups, such as the Scouts and youth sports organizations, use it – especially in the winter. The high school’s athletic teams use the gym for practices. The Fox Valley Career Center has fire science classes there. And ACT and PSAT testing for high school classes often will take place there.

The history Since the fall of 2009, all of the middle school students in Kaneland School District 302 have attended Harter Middle School in Sugar Grove. A referendum in 2008 cleared the way for the building of Harter, and, since the district was anticipating great growth, it was renovating the Meredith Road building with the intention of operating two middle schools.

But by the end of 2008, facing an increasingly difficult economic situation, board members decided to have only one middle school, the new one in Sugar Grove, built for more than 1,200 students.

Cheryl Krauspe, who was a member of the board then and now is the school board president, said officials had to quickly shift from a mindset of preparing for tremendous growth to the realization that

the growth wasn’t coming anytime soon. And while she said there has been criticism from some residents since then, she added that “if we had not passed that referendum, we would still be asking for it today.” She said Harter has significantly more space than the Meredith Road site, which now can serve as many as 850 students, and that the previous site needed renovations.

And now, she said, the district has an updated building that stands ready to be used when the growth does come.

Superintendent Jeff Schuler called the building “an asset that I do think the district will need at some point in time.”

For instance, the plans for Elburn Station, approved last year by the Elburn Village

Board, potentially could double the village’s population over 20 years.

“Our student population is going to grow again,” Schuler said.

While many residents refer to the building as “the old middle school,” district officials do not, instead calling it the Kaneland Middle School at Meredith Road, or Meredith Road Middle School. In the future, it could be used as an extension to the high school, an additional middle school or another use, depending on what needs the district might see in the future.

of scheduling the groups that use the Meredith Road Middle School. She said the building initially was closed as the renovations were completed, but after that, activities resumed.

And they continue.

“The gymnasium is used every night of the week, all day Saturday and all day Sunday,” Fuchs said. She said officials have found it to be an ideal place for testing.

“The facility provides a very quiet setting and a classroom setting for the students,” she said.

She called the building “a beautiful facility, absolutely” and said it gets inspected each year to make sure safety codes are met. The kitchen area is closed, however, as it is not needed. She said renova-

tions included a new roof and a classroom addition, some lighting improvements and a replacement of the gym floor.

She said renting the building out to community groups does provide “a small amount of income.”

“It helps to offset some of the utility costs,” Fuchs said.

She said the Fox Valley Career Center is in the process of implementing a program that could meet in the building. She said it’s helpful to have the space available and that it’s good to have the space available for when trends will show a future need. Right now, she said, there is no such trend. But the facility is useful.

“We’re very fortunate to have the space,” she said.

She has been free since posting $50,000 bail April 6, 2011.

Prosecutors called eight witnesses Tuesday: four witnesses who were at the scene of the crash, both victims’ mothers and two police officials. Witnesses at the scene said Schmidt’s vehicle appeared to be speeding at above the 45 mph limit just before the crash.

Meanwhile, Sycamore police detective Daniel Hoffman estimated Getzelman was driving 24 mph a second before the crash. But Schmidt’s lawyer objected to that testimony, saying devices recording crash information obtained from both vehicles was not tested for their proficiency. Stuckert sustained those objections.

In a recorded interview with police April 6, 2011, Schmidt said she was taking multiple prescription medications for conditions such

as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. She declined to tell police which, if any, medications she took the day of the accident. One of those medications, lorazepam, has drowsiness listed as a side effect.

But Schmidt told police she never had a seizure while driving and that her seizures weren’t the type where she loses consciousness, has convulsions or falls, said George Maness, a former Sycamore police officer on scene on the day of the crash.

Montgomery played police interviews recorded from both before and after Schmidt was arrested.

Schmidt’s memory during both interviews seemed fuzzy yet consistent. She repeatedly said in the recorded videos she did not remember what happened.

“I have bits and pieces, but I’m not sure what happened first,” Schmidt said in the first interview.

In the second interview, Schmidt said she remembers

switching on her windshield wipers after hearing a report on the radio that there was a black ice warning in the area.

“That’s the last memory I have until I was sitting in a ditch,” Schmidt said.

When Schmidt was later brought in for questioning, Maness asked her off the cuff whether she had any seizures in the past. Schmidt replied that her last seizure was Feb. 6, 2011, 15 days before the crash, Maness said.

Both victims’ mothers, Dawn Weber and Tamara Getzelman, testified briefly.

Weber, with tissues in her clenched hand, began to cry when prosecutors asked her when her daughter was born.

“I saw her last at 10 a.m.

Monday, Feb. 21, 2011,” Weber said. “We were in the kitchen, and she was getting ready to go to breakfast with her friends on her day off.”

The case will continue at 10 a.m. March 3. Prosecutors expect to call accident reconstruction experts to the stand as the trial continues.

SYCAMORE – Jennifer Schopfer found no pulse on Tim Getzelman and was unsure if she found a pulse on Lexi Weber when she came upon a fatal car crash about 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21, 2011.

But Schopfer, an off-duty nurse, had a short conversation with Patricia Schmidt when she approached the pickup truck that had collided with Getzelman’s white Pontiac Grand Am, Schopfer testified Tuesday.

“I asked if [Schmidt] was OK, and she said, ‘I’m fine,’” Schopfer said. “[Every] question I asked was either an, ‘I’m fine’ or ‘no.’”

Whether Schmidt really was fine is at issue a trial that started Tuesday and will continue March 3.

Schmidt was diagnosed with a seizure condition three years before the fatal crash, and doctors told her not to drive or operate heavy machinery while she was taking

her medication, DeKalb County Assistant State’s Attorney Phil Montgomery said.

Schmidt, 48, of the of the 28500 block of Brickville Road, is accused of reckless homicide and aggravated reckless driving in connection with the crash at the intersection of Route 23 and Peace Road in Sycamore.

If convicted of the more serious charge, reckless homicide, she could Patricia be sentenced to Schmidt probation or up to 5 years in prison. Getzelman, a 21-year-old Sycamore High School graduate, died at the scene, while Weber, a 21-year-old Kaneland High School graduate, died shortly after.

Politicians weigh in on State of the Union speech

and EMILY COLEMAN ecoleman@shawmedia.com U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, and State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, held differing views of President Obama’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday night.

In a statement, Foster said he supported President Obama’s State of the Union Address, especially Obama’s agenda to support working families and his call to action.

“Everyone deserves a shot at the American dream – to get a good education, a job that supports a family, and a place to call home,” Foster said in a prepared statement.

“Unfortunately, for too many, that dream is becoming harder to achieve. Our country succeeds when our middle class succeeds and it is critical that our policies support working families.”

Foster criticized Congress’ failure to act on critical issues, such as unemployment insurance, raising the minimum wage, commonsense gun control laws and comprehensive immigration reform.

Oberweis said the president was “trying to be upbeat” but cautioned that “the devil

is always in the details.”

For example, Obama mentioned closing loop holes and wanting to help entrepreneurs that are “positive sounding and that most of us at first blush would agree with until we start looking at the details.”

But he’s done so many things that hurt entrepreneurs, including raising taxes and through Obamacare, and that made things uncertain, Oberweis said. Obama also talked about energy independence and increased oil production – something Oberweis said happened “not because of his actions, but despite them.”

Oberweis pointed to not allowing drilling on public land and the Keystone pipeline, which would improve oil transportation.

Oberweis called it “a little disingenuous.”

Regarding raising the minimum wage, Oberweis said, everyone believes someone who is willing to work should have an opportunity for a new job “but we can’t forget the real world fact that nobody believes that a head of a family of three or four people can take care of that family on minimum wage. It was never intended to be that way.”

The minimum wage was intended for entry level jobs,

for young workers, he said.

Raising it “would make it more difficult [for young people] to get a job and learn basic skills so they can go on to get better jobs so they can gain in knowledge and experience. …

Our government restrictions and interference has made it more difficult, especially for African-American youths, to get good jobs.”

Also, U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, said he agreed with Obama that “we need to get Americans back to work” but added that “unfortunately, the president shares the mentality in Illinois and Washington to spend money we don’t have and force burdensome regulations on the businesses providing jobs to middle-class families.”

And U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, said Americans want change. “Instead of dividing up an increasingly shrinking slice of the pie, let’s join together in growing the whole economy for the benefit of all Americans.”

Obama’s State of Union highlights executive power THE WASHINGTON POST WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama sought Tuesday to restore public confidence and trust in his presidency after a dispiriting year, pledging to use his White House authority with new force to advance an agenda that Congress has largely failed to support.

In his fifth State of the Union address, Obama challenged lawmakers to work with him to achieve breakthroughs on large-scale initiatives to overhaul immigration laws and provide more benefits to American workers, including a higher minimum wage and an extension of long-term unemployment insurance.

But he also sketched out more than a dozen ways in which he intends to use executive powers to try to boost the economy, a recognition by the president that he is running out of time to achieve his goals in the face of hardening Republican opposition.

“What I offer tonight is a set of concrete, practical proposals to speed up growth, strengthen the middle class

and build new ladders of opportunity into the middle class,” Obama said. “Some require congressional action, and I’m eager to work with all of you. But America does not stand still – and neither will I. So wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, that’s what I’m going to do.”

In the course of his speech, Obama laid out what aides described as an “optimistic” view of where the nation is headed, calling for a “year of action.”

To that end, Obama announced a list of executive actions that he will pursue in the coming months aimed at slowing the widening income gap among American families, actions the White House has called a top priority for the year. Among them were plans to raise the minimum wage for federal contract workers from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 an hour by 2015, create a new government-backed private retirement savings plan and speed up implementation of a previously announced program to connect schools to broadband wireless.

NSA can’t justify phone-record collection program BLOOMBERG NEWS

costs. By now it’s obvious that the oversight of this phone program was insufficient. The benefit of having the records in the first place, however, was always couched in more practical terms by the NSA and its supporters in Congress – it was helping thwart terrorist attacks.

The NSA has asserted that bulk data collection has played some role in disrupting 54 “terrorist events.” Of those, only 12 involved the phone-data program in some capacity. The privacy board examined each in detail.

In the only case where the program may have helped the government identify a terrorism suspect, there was no threat of an attack on the United States and no reason to conclude that a bulk data-collection program was necessary to determine the

connection.

None of which is to say that the program could never prove useful. The privacy board found that bulk collection has some limited benefits. It can help investigators find leads on existing suspects (almost always by corroborating information they already have), and it can help confirm that a foreign terrorist plot does not have a U.S. connection, thus helping conserve law-enforcement resources.

But all this comes with clear drawbacks. The program is objectively intrusive, unpopular with the public and legally dubious.

In addition, the simple act of collecting and storing so much personal information on citizens – in secret, without probable cause – erodes the very notion of American

liberty.

For all that, if the program were essential for stopping terrorist attacks and saving American lives, it might still be worthwhile.

Yet almost everyone who has looked into the program in detail has concluded that it isn’t an essential tool in preventing terrorist attacks and that it has demonstrated little or nothing of unique investigative value. A review group appointed by the president in August came to roughly the same conclusion as the privacy board on this score.

So have two members of the Senate intelligence committee. So did a federal judge.

After seven years of evidence, in other words, the basic premise used to rationalize this program has never been validated. What’s left to justify its costs?

To the Editor: This month, more people were killed and injured at a theater in Florida and a school in New Mexico. Almost every week someone is killed by weapons legally carried into malls, theaters and other places.

The Second Amendment right to bear arms is apparently more important to fanatics than the safety of innocent Americans. Assault rifles and semi-automatic pistols with high-capacity magazines are everywhere.

So, next time you see someone that looks a little weird or is in a rage over losing his job, you better run because he probably has a gun and might shoot you.

And, of course, the NRA wants you to have a gun in order to “defend” yourself from someone who should have had a background check (and might have failed).

You can blast each other and increase the chances of killing or wounding bystanders in a big shootout.

Of the many questions that still surround the National Security Agency’s vast global spying operations, one seems especially pertinent – do they actually work? That is, have they helped to prevent terrorist attacks against Americans?

In the case of the NSA’s phone-data program – in which the agency vacuums up information about essentially every call made

by Americans – it’s getting harder and harder for the government to answer yes.

The latest evidence comes from a report last week by the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board, an independent federal agency established on the recommendation of the Sept. 11 Commission to balance the right

to liberty against the need to prevent terrorism.

The board – which had access to classified information – offered this blunt assessment: “We have not identified a single instance involving a threat to the United States in which the telephone records program made a concrete difference in the outcome of a counterterrorism investigation. Moreover, we are aware of no instance in which the program directly contributed to the discovery of a previously unknown terrorist plot or the disruption of a terrorist attack.”

In evaluating the NSA’s stunning surveillance capabilities, revealed by former contractor Edward Snowden beginning last June, the question always should be whether the benefits are worth the

PICKING UP THE INTENSITY East senior Vela eyes finishing touches on his career

I

saiah Vela grinned Saturday at the suggestion he has been putting on a St. Charles East wrestling singlet for longer than four seasons.

His poise out of the gate made it easy to overlook Vela’s youth.

A fourth-place finisher as a freshman 119-pounder at the Class 3A state meet, Vela delivered on the slight hype that preceded him into the Saints’ mat room.

He returned to Champaign just once after that, however, increasing the urgency for a final pursuit of the podium that begins with the South Elgin Regional on Feb. 8.

“I have big goals for myself. I’ve been having big goals for the past four years,” Vela said. “But this year, I’ve really stepped up my game.

I’m ready for state.”

Now competing at 138, Vela improved to 33-3 with a three-match sweep at the Upstate Eight Conference tournament at Elgin this past weekend.

He earned falls in his first two bouts before defeating Waubonsie Valley’s Jimmy Davis, 6-3, in the championship match, benefiting from his aggressiveness on the edge.

Vela’s individual title was one of six for the Saints, who won the UEC team title for the second straight season.

Vela spotted such potential in the offseason – in both himself and the team – which spurred him to a more vocal role than before.

Vela figures there wasn’t much to trumpet about an injury-plagued sophomore year. A 37-win junior season in which he advanced to state at 132 but was eliminated in wrestlebacks reignited the conversation.

Yes, it’s possible to get a few words in between the usual fare of “Disturbed” or rap songs that blare during Saints practices.

“As a senior, Isaiah’s really picked it up. I would say this is probably his best year,” said classmate Jake Mende, the UEC champion

at 145. “Most of us guys were wrestling together since we were little kids, and now that we’re all together senior year, you know, this really means a lot for us.”

Saints coach Jason Potter increased the offseason emphasis on weight training, which especially benefited Vela.

After swinging between 132 and 138 as a junior, Vela will stay put at 138, where he has more bulk than many opponents.

Saints starters believe they have a mental edge entering bouts, too. After East went 9-2 in the final round at conference – the team also produced two third-place finishers and one fifth-place wrestler – there might be something to that notion.

“Just as a whole, I think it was a great performance to finish matches and train through stuff, and we weren’t satisfied sitting through little leads, trying to hang on,” Pot-

ter said. “In the middle of the year, you’ve got guys hanging on to one-point leads and not continuing to wrestle.”

Without stepping on Potter’s feet, that’s the kind of stuff Vela found himself policing in the early season.

“When kids are slacking, you know, I keep telling them to push themselves,” he said.

“It’s what you do in practice that will show on the mat.”

Vela’s losses – twice to Marist senior Mario Leveille, once to St. Rita senior Mike Falco – came against athletes who are part of different sectionals. It’s likely Vela would have to avenge those defeats in a possible state tournament berth before turning his attention to uncertain college plans.

Vela knew as much as he assessed the sting of each bout. He has learned much more. Four seasons aren’t quite 10, but they’re more than enough to harden someone.

A shoulder impingement limited Crosby to 13 starts and 57⅔ innings with Triple-A Toledo in 2013, so he’s especially encouraged to find his new regimen providing a “night and day” difference.

Last month, the Tigers announced plans to move Crosby to the bullpen. Although he made three spot starts in June 2012, struggles and injuries that prompted Tommy John elbow surgery earlier in his career ultimately steered the organization’s decision.

Crosby from joining the Tigers on their winter caravan and fan fest during the weekend.

• Fellow Cub collaborators, the Kane County Cougars, will not host a “Meet the Cubs” hot stove banquet this weekend.

The event’s traditional complement, an adult coaching clinic featuring coaches from the Cubs and Cougars organizations, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday inside the upper deck level at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

The Class-A Cougars will begin their second season of a two-year player development contract with the Cubs on April 3 at Quad Cities, with the home opener scheduled for April 8 against Fort Wayne.

BATAVIA – David DeJesus will wear a darker shade of blue on his cap and uniform in 2014 than most of last baseball season. On Saturday afternoon, a handful of grade-schoolers clad in Cubs gear looked the other way.

Then again, many youngsters gazed at the turf or a side wall of ProForce Sports Performance Training, anyway, as DeJesus’ clinic concluded.

ProForce owner Chris Browning incorporated strength training stations after DeJesus – now a Tampa Bay Rays outfielder after spending 2012 and part of 2013 with the Cubs – happily lent his expertise alongside a few minor leaguers.

“Just to get these guys out and be around other professionals, they can learn something, pick something up and maybe that’ll get them to the next level in their career,” DeJesus said. “We just want to be tools they can use, and we’re excited to help them out.”

DeJesus, who lives in Wheaton during the offseason, is planning a second clinic from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 8. The event is designed for players in grades five to 12, and will be divided into middle and high school groups.

Blending in with the ProForce staff and clientele for the past 3½ years, DeJesus credits Atlanta Braves minor league outfielder Dan Brewer for introducing him to Browning and his staff.

A Lyons Township graduate now residing in Chicago, Brewer lived in Batavia with his mother when the New York Yankees drafted him in 2008.

“I feel like I keep moving farther and farther away from Batavia, but keep coming out here,” Brewer said. “I wouldn’t train anywhere else.”

Former East football coach back in UEC Ted Monken took over a St. Charles East football program that was looking to restore its tradition after slipping once St. Charles High split.

Monken then moved on to brand-new Metea Valley, which had no tradition, period.

And now? Monken is returning to the Upstate Eight Conference football coaching ranks at West Chicago, a school with a modern tradition about as bleak as they come. The Wildcats have had two winning seasons since 1978.

Monken, who said he learned he had the West Chicago job last week, framed the degree of difficulty of his latest coaching gig as a plus.

“It’s great being at those places where kids are hungry for success, where people are starving to be pointed in the right direction, and hopefully when you win those games, it means that much more,” Monken said.

Monken coached at St. Charles East from 2004 to 2008 before leaving to launch the program at Metea, where he spent just two seasons. He said he’s worked in sales since resigning at Metea after the 2011 season.

The short duration at Metea raised eyebrows considering the Monken family’s deep coaching roots – his father, Bob Monken, is in the Illinois Football Coaches Association hall of fame, and his brother, Todd, is a Division I head coach at Southern Mississippi – but Monken said he remains on good terms with former colleagues and administrators at Metea, and pursued a chance to make more money in the private sector.

“It’s a good thing to have a lot of friends but it’s also a lot of people you have to explain things to,” said Monken, who led the Mustangs to a 4-5 record in Year 2 of the program’s existence. “I’ve been doing that a lot the last couple years, but it’s just something I wanted to try.”

Monken unsurprisingly missed coaching and is set to reacquaint himself with the UEC. After West Chicago relocated to the UEC from the cutthroat DuPage Valley Conference last year, the Wildcats

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab will move to the UEC’s River Division in 2014 as West Aurora and Glenbard East join the conference, meaning Monken’s Wildcats will compete in the same division as the Tri-Cities schools.

But West Chicago will also become division-mates with Elgin, Larkin and Streamwood, programs more comparable to West Chicago. That’s encouraging to Monken, who said “If it’s constantly David and Goliath, you can’t always sell everybody we can be David. You want a fair fight once in a while.”

Monken said it’ll be important to have a degree of early success, much like he did in his first year at East after the Saints went 1-8 the season before he took over. Monken’s first East team went 4-5 before making the playoffs each of the next four seasons.

“That is everything,” Monken said. “You can get everybody excited, you can do big, fire-up speeches and all the great things you want to do anytime you take over a program to get people believing in your philosophy and what want to do, but if you don’t win some games, it’s going to be very difficult to keep that momentum.”

Monken, who was defensive coordinator at St. Norbert College and Wheaton Warrenville South before arriving in St. Charles, said he’s hoping to make West Chicago his home for the long-haul.

“For the most part it’s all been about my family and doing what’s best for my career, so I feel even though my resume is a little long, that there’s a valid reason that each move has been made,” Monken said. “I’m getting older, I’m 45 and I’m tired of moving, so I’m really hoping to make West Chicago my last stop. I’d love to do something special there.”

Sputtering against the Vikings in the teams’ first meeting Jan. 10 is one of the catalysts for North’s recent run.

“The Geneva game was definitely a real change for our team in a way that we look at how we play and how important it is to play together,” Davern said.

“Because in the Geneva game, we were

all thinking about the [back] of our jersey, which we can’t do that if you want to be successful. So we definitely took it to use in the future games.”

Hot shots Wheaton Academy’s Jamie Netzley and Molly Thorson combined for 30 points in Saturday’s home win against St. Francis behind a pretty impressive collaborative effort.

Netzley, a sophomore guard, and Thorson, a junior forward, drilled 9-of-16 3-point attempts in the game.

Thorson, who has impressed coach Beth Mitchell with her athleticism, had been hurt for much of her career before this season, fighting through a hand injury and a broken clavicle.

Sidney Santos shifted from the frontcourt to the backcourt once again when Geneva teammate Michaela Loebel suffered another knee injury last month.

The 6-foot-1 Santos, a projected center at Oakland (Mich.), followed the same path in November 2012 after Loebel, a Nebraska soccer recruit, tore her ACL four games into her junior season.

“When I switched into the role, I was definitely more prepared for it because of last year,” said Santos, a senior.

“It’s a whole team thing. We all have to step up since Michaela’s not there.”

Santos credited Vikings Morgan Seberger and Abby Novak for helping her transition to point guard. Even when she was coming up as a highly touted freshman – a rise delayed by her own season-ending knee injury entering her debut campaign – coaches touted Santos’ ballhandling ability.

“She’s just so selfless that she doesn’t care that she has to do it,” Vikings coach Sarah Meadows said. “We just need her to stay on the court, you know.

And we’ve talked about it. She’s got to stop fouling. She’s more valuable on the court than maybe even giving up two points. But I think she’s doing a solid job.”

Santos awaits her next test tonight, as she’ll play opposite Fenwick point guard Jade Owens, a Creighton recruit. The Vikings-Friars nonconference series has been a regular for Geneva of late.

“Those games are more fun to play in because you have nothing to lose and it’s always a hard-fought battle,” Santos said. “They always have great players, so it’s always a good game.”

Lopez’s father, also named Ramon, was an accomplished wrestler in his day at Streamwood High School. How much momentum do you feel like you have

going into regionals now?

It’s a lot of momentum because we knew this would be kind of a really good gauge on how we do at regionals because it’s pretty much the same tournament minus a couple of teams and of course adding Glenbard North. …

Coming into this tournament we know we’d be able to carry it into regionals, hopefully.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some tricky homework, who would it be and why?

I’d have to say probably Vinny Mugnolo, even though he’s injured, or Jason Weber, who’s in and out of the lineup, too. I know that they’re pretty smart in school, too, and I know they’d help out a lot, and they’re always there with some witty comments here and there, and always helping us out on and off the mat.

The monster is back in ‘I, Frankenstein’

By TIM MILLER More Content Now Frankenstein’s monster is back, and, boy, is he one sullen son of a gun.

In “I, Frankenstein,” he’s 200-plus years old, and looking pretty good for his age, scars and all. But if he thought dealing with a mad scientist and excitable villagers was tough, now he’s really in for it. There’s a war between gargoyles (think of them as unattractive angels) and demons (think of them as demons) going on, and our living-corpse protagonist is caught in the middle.

No wonder he’s grumpy.

Played by Aaron Eckhart, the monster – or, “Adam,” as he’s called by the

gargoyle queen (Miranda Otto) – gets to channel his anger as a kick-butt action hero.

He soars through the air, punching and kicking and killing gargoyles and demons like an oversized video-game ninja. That is, when he isn’t delivering pronouncements like “I am like no other,” and other cornball lines (“Descend in pain, demon!”) that provide unintentional chuckles.

In fact, it’s hard to believe Eckhart and the other actors – which include Yvonne Strahovski (formerly of TV’s “Chuck”) as the modern-day scientist who becomes Adam’s love interest and Bill Nighy as the top demon – can deliver the over-the-top dialogue with a straight face.

For that reason, “I, Frankenstein”

is best viewed as camp – though it’s not quite campy/funny enough.

It’s also not at all scary, and the story is uninvolving. And while it’s fun to watch gargoyles perched on top of a cathedral come to life, the special effects are – surprise! – excessive and ultimately boring.

Even the great Nighy can’t save this one.

• “I, Frankenstein,” a film based on the graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux, received two out of four stars. The film stars Aaron Eckhart, Bill Nighy and Yvonne Strahovski. It is written and directed by Stuart Beattie. The film runs 93 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sequences of intense fantasy action and violence throughout.

Husband’s plumbing results in leaky marriage Dear Abby: I have been with my husband for 19 years. I offered his plumbing services to a married couple I work with. While he was fixing the problem, he became friendly with their adult daughter. She was lonely and I knew the family, so I wasn’t concerned.

Their relationship developed into something more and we separated. He ended their friendship and we reconciled.

Things were going great, but she continued to contact him. He has suddenly decided he can’t live without her friendship and has decided to divorce me in order to continue it with her. He swears it’s platonic, but something he can’t live without. He hopes we can “still be friends.”

My question is how to move on from this. I have to see her enabling parents every day at work, and all of this happened under their roof. I feel betrayed on every level, especially by my husband, who was my best friend. Every aspect of my life, including my job, has been affected.

Have you any advice for moving past this without all of the anger I carry? I don’t want to leave my job. It pays well and the

Cardiac rehab involves more than simply exercising Dear Doctor K: My father recently had a heart attack. His doctor recommended cardiac rehab, but he refuses to go because he “already has a gym membership.”

How important is cardiac rehab?

Dear Reader: Cardiac rehabilitation is a safe, proven way to reduce risk factors for heart disease.

Dr. Daniel Forman, director of the exercise testing lab at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, feels strongly about the subject. He says that for reducing deaths and increasing quality of life, cardiac rehab exceeds any pill or procedure.

Like your father, many of my patients push back on the idea of cardiac rehab. They too wonder why they can’t just go to the gym.

But there’s a lot more to cardiac rehab than exercise.

Cardiac rehab is a structured program. It does include exercise, but it is initially done in a medical setting, under close observation. As a person ramps up the exercise, the reaction of the heart is being monitored. Exercise is heart-healthy, but it has to be started slowly and gradually increased.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff In my experience, most people who have had a heart attack are not like your father. They don’t just go back to the gym, like your father would like to do.

On the contrary, they are afraid to exercise again after a heart attack – and failing to exercise regularly only increases their risk of another heart attack. My patients who have had that fear are greatly reassured to learn that cardiac rehab provides the opportunity to exercise in a safe environment.

A cardiac rehab team may include a physical therapist, a nurse, a nutritionist, and a psychologist or social worker. The team assesses an individual’s risk factors for heart and blood vessel disease. Then the team members work with the patient to: • Teach and support lifestyle changes. These include weight control, a heart-healthy diet and quitting smoking.

• Develop a tailored exercise

plan. They’ll also help the patient get started, and help integrate exercise into daily routines.

• Monitor and help control blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.

• Assess mental health problems related to heart disease and provide counseling.

• Improve communication with doctors and other health care providers.

If your father is worried about the cost of entering a cardiac rehab program, tell him that Medicare and many other insurance plans cover cardiac rehab programs. Patients generally qualify if they’ve had a heart attack, angina, angioplasty or stents, open-heart surgery or a heart transplant.

I hope you’ll be able to convince your father to enter cardiac rehab. He will enjoy it and he will learn how to protect his heart – and it will likely give him more years of good health.

Taking a wait-and-see attitude would be a big mistake. Her complexion problems are unlikely to improve without medical assistance, and the sooner problems are treated, the easier and less costly the treatment will be.

A healthy complexion for a teenage young lady is of prime concern.

Dr. Wallace: I’m in my third year of study at Harvard University. I was an honors student in high school and my university grades are excellent. I plan to enter the law profession and then go into politics when I complete all my necessary education.

Recently, I read about a study that found that students with low gradepoint averages consume more than 11 drinks per week while students with the highest gradepoint averages consume four drinks per week or less. I dispute this finding. I have a 3.75 grade-point average and I enjoy between 14 and 21 beers a week. Many are consumed while doing schoolwork in my dorm room. Does this mean that I would have a better than 3.75 grade-point

People and institutions waste a lot of time, energy and money trying to “scientifically” discover what makes humans tick. Dear Sean: I have a better idea about helping the poor and downtrodden that you are so concerned about. Just think of the staggering amount of money wasted on drugs, tobacco and, yes, liquor. If these wasted funds were directed to those in need, we’d solve the problem of global poverty in a few weeks.

It doesn’t take a lot of time and money to determine that excessive drinking by college students interferes with studies and causes GPA’s to bottom out.

There are exceptions to every rule, of course.

Congratulations on being lucky enough to be one of those exceptions.

You have excellent grades and I wish you success as you pursue your career aims.

If you’re really curious whether your grades would be even higher if you cut back sharply on your drinking, why don’t you try it? My fear is that you can’t. Anyone who puts away as much alcohol as you do on a weekly basis is likely addicted to it.

Outside the tournament world, many players do not know the unusual response to make with the North hand in today’s diagram. After South opens one spade and West makes a takeout double, what should North do?

If West had passed, North would have bid three spades, a game-invitational limit raise. But when righty doubles, now a jump raise is best played as pre-emptive, showing four-card spade support and a weak hand. This, one hopes, will make life much harder for the fourth hand.

To invite game with four or more trumps, respond two no-trump. (This should be called Truscott, after Alan the deviser, who lived in England at that time. But it is often known as Jordan, after Bobby the advertiser of the idea in the United States.)

Note that any strong, balanced hand without four spades begins with redouble, promising 10 points or more.

Here, over two no-trump, East would pass and South would jump to four spades, keeping his club suit hidden.

West leads the heart king: four, 10, ace. South will probably draw trumps ending in his hand and play a diamond to the jack.

East wins and continues hearts.

South ruffs the third round of that suit, leads a club to the queen, discards two clubs on the high diamonds, and concedes one club trick.

Patriotism will take center stage Assembly to feature Cornelison, Medal of Honor recipient, three-star general MAPLE PARK – Jim Cornelison is known for his rousing rendition of the national anthem before Chicago Blackhawks games, with fans at the United Center cheering throughout the song.

But when Cornelison belts out the anthem in March at a patriotic assembly at Kaneland High School, the assembly’s organizer said he expects a different environment. Rudy Keller, Kaneland’s interim athletic director, said he has brought in Cornelison for such events at other schools, and he said students understood the difference between a veterans assembly and a Blackhawks game.

“We asked the students to be quiet,” Keller said. “It’s a different atmosphere than the United Center.”

Keller is planning the event for 8 a.m. March 17 at the high school, which is at 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.

He said he is putting it together to remind students that “every day, you should support the red, white and blue,” and that “patriotism is not

Although Cornelison might be the local celebrity whose name jumps out, Keller is excited about the veterans who will be at the event. Allen Lynch, a Medal of Honor recipient, will be the keynote speaker. Lt. Gen. Randall Rigby, a three-star general, also will appear.

Keller said the event will honor three “gold-star families” from Kaneland, each celebrating a soldier who “gave the ultimate sacrifice to our country” – Robert Domena from the Kaneland Class of 1990, Richard Wormdahl from the Class of 1963 and Edwin Turk Jr. from the Class of 1962.

Also, Leslie Hill from the American Chamber Opera will sing “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless

America,” and Keller said he will be inviting “as many veterans from the community that I can find” to be part of the assembly. He said he wants them to embrace the opportunity “to be in the presence of a Medal of Honor recipient. … It’s such a rare occasion to be in the presence of a Medal of Honor recipient.” He said local veterans should feel free to contact him via email at Rudy.Keller@ kaneland.org.

Keller said he has worked with many of the participants in the assembly before and is excited about the event. And if Cornelison is kicking it off, he has a history of getting others pumped up.

“He is the guy,” Keller said.

“There is nobody who does the national anthem like Jim Cornelison.”

‘Laramie Project’ at Kaneland An additional performance of “The Laramie Project” will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Black Box Theatre in the Kaneland High School auditorium, 47W326 Kelsinger

Road, Maple Park. Last week, a snowy forecast canceled the first performance of the Kaneland Arts Initiative’s winter theater production, but the show went on the rest of the weekend.

The event is presented by the KAI, in partnership with the Kindness Campaign, a group that has sought to spread its message – “Be Nice.

Be Happy” – in response to bullying in the Kaneland School District. A discussion will follow the presentation.

The entrance is through door 32, which is north of the entrance. KAI is not able to accept debit or credit cards.

Those attending should pay with cash or a check. The cost is $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens.

“The Laramie Project” is a drama that depicts the account of the townspeople in Laramie, Wyo., after the death of Matthew Shepherd.

Education in Action Kaneland Elementary District Spelling Bee In December 2013, each of the four Kaneland Elementary Schools hosted a spelling bee for their 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Each school nominated 10 students from each grade level to participate in the competition. The top 10 students from the building spelling bee moved on to the district level spelling bee, which was held on Thursday, January 16th, 2014. The top 3 spellers at each building also received a medal for their achievement.
