BHS drama learning life lessons in ‘Little Women’

BATAVIA – What do you do when you have many talented female drama students and not enough roles in a typical play to divvy out among them?

You choose a literary piece that has nearly all female leads and write your own adaptation.

That’s what director Joshua Casburn did after contemplating this year’s winter production for Batavia High School.

Casburn and his wife, Heidi, co-wrote a stage version of Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women,” which will be performed by BHS students at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday – with an additional 2 p.m. performance Saturday – in the Black Box Theatre at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, 1201 Main St., Batavia.

“One thing I find is there aren’t very many plays in theater that are geared toward great parts for women,” said Casburn, a BHS English teacher. “We have so many girls, and they’re all so good.”

By adapting one of the most important coming-ofage novels in American history, Casburn said he was able to provide suitable roles for many of his female students, while also introducing the drama group to an important theater tool: workshopping.

“In workshopping, [you take] a piece of writing and have actors go through it and give you feedback,” Casburn said. “We cut and added scenes, which we couldn’t do if we had done another play – we’d be breaking copyright laws. [This way, we gave] the kids an experience they’ve never had before.”

Adapting “Little Women” – which follows four sisters as they learn life lessons in 19th century New England – wasn’t easy.

“[It] was a little frustrating because we had to memorize new lines,” the 17-yearold said. “[But] I think it really taught us how to be able to adapt and focus and pay attention. It also helped us develop our character more because the scenes gave us more information about our characters.”

The Civil War-era characters already have shaped the actresses’ lives, said 17-yearold Tori McKeenhan, who will play the March girls’ mother, Marmee.

“Marmee … is always in control of herself, never cross or angry,” McKeenhan said. “She hides her emotions very well, which is hard for an actress to suppress anything. My teachers

know immediately if I’m totally lost – I just show it. So … I like how Marmee has changed my perspective a little bit. She is calm, cool and collected; at least, she tries to appear that way. I’m more like that now.”

“Little Women” also will star senior Jamie VandenOever as Jo March; sophomore Meghan Tucker as Meg March; senior Sarah Heylmun as Beth March; junior Abby Weiss as Louisa May Alcott, the narrator; senior Mikkel Knutson as Laurie Lawrence; senior Billy Bernardoni as John Brooke; and others.

editorial@kcchronicle.com There is, perhaps, a certain irony in not driving oneself to the Chicago Auto Show, but thanks to the St. Charles Park District, car nuts and gearheads of all types can enjoy this popular annual event without having to gas up the car and fight traffic to get there. Whether you’re window shopping for a new family van, indulging fantasies of a midlife-crisis sports car or checking out the latest in transportation technology, the Chicago Auto Show is the place to be for all things automotive.

“It’s a fun family outing,” said Josh Williams, recreation supervisor for the St. Charles Park District. “The registration fee is very reasonable and covers everything from tickets to the show, round-trip transportation and parking.”

The park district will host its trip to the auto show Feb. 14, departing at 9 a.m. Residents ages 5 to 12 and 60-plus get in for $25, while those ages 13 to 59 pay $29. The trip departs from – and returns to – the Pottawatomie Community Center in St. Charles, making for a stressfree day of browsing the newest and most impressive cars the industry has to offer.

EYE-OPENING FINDING

As nearsightedness becomes nearly epidemic among school-aged children, researchers are looking for possible causes and treatments. While this refractive error can be easily corrected with prescription eyeglasses/contact lenses, new research reveals that the eye drops used to dilate the pupils during an eye exam may also play a role in reducing nearsightedness. Atropine drops work by blocking the chemical acetylcholine, which relaxes the ciliary muscle of the eye and causes the pupil to dilate. Researchers also found during a 5-year trial involving 400 children that atropine eye drops in a low concentration (0.01) percent also slowed the development of myopia in 60 percent of children who received the drops. This promising finding may pave the way for new treatments.

P.S. Recent research suggests that children who are encouraged to play outdoors in natural sunlight are less likely to develop myopia than children who stay indoors and concentrate on computer screens and hand-held devices.

ST. CHARLES – An event that has celebrated the spirit of home improvement, renovation and transformation for more than 30 years is set to return to St. Charles next month, according to a press release.

The Old House New House Home Show is planned for Feb. 12 to 14 at Pheasant Run Resort, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for those older than 62, and free for those younger than 18, according to the release. It indicated that a portion of the proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley and the ReStore in Elgin.

Parking is free.

According to the release, the following workshops are included with admission:

• Decorating Trends will be presented daily at 11 a.m. by Deb Goetz of St. Charles-based Deb Goetz Interiors. Explore colors and styles with this designer to give a home a new look.

Burdened by electronics, St. Charles eyes ending recycling program

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The last of the Tri-Cities is on the verge of ending its electronics recycling site for Kane County due to an inundation of materials, which staff said is not only creating a burden on employees, but is also posing safety concerns.

Meeting as the Government Services Committee, St. Charles aldermen on Monday unanimously supported terminating the program after environmental services manager John Lamb outlined its recent challenges.

“There’s a lot of things going on in the program that obviously weren’t the intention of the program,” Lamb said.

He briefed the aldermen on the program’s history, which began in 2012, the same year the state banned electronics from landfills.

In 2015, the city stopped getting revenue for the electronics, and Batavia and Geneva closed their drop-off points, leaving St. Charles and West Dundee as the only collection sites in the county program.

St. Charles has received an influx of materials, which are sometimes left at the closed gate after hours and have been freezing to the ground, Lamb said.

He noted that items not included in the program, such as TV stands and furniture, have also been left.

GENEVA – Kane County continues to polish and tighten its credit card policy, a topic that arose last year after County Board members cried foul over activity by the coroner.

Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick on Wednesday presented the Finance and Budget Committee with a proposed beefed-up policy – it went from one page to three – that put current practices into writing and addressed topics the existing policy doesn’t.

Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the work has made a good policy better.

“I would like to emphasize that this whole process is a polishing and tightening of the existing policy,” he said.

Discussions about the county’s credit cards – or procurement cards, as they are also known – began at the committee’s October meeting. Members were upset Coroner Rob Russell used his P-card to avoid the standard approval process for promotional items. Russell later reimbursed the county with a personal check.

The proposed policy, which was only considered for discussion Wednesday, outlines restrictions regarding the

issuance and use of P-cards as well as who is responsible for various aspects of the program.

“The county recognizes that a procurement card facilitates the purchase of certain goods and services, but also increases the risk of unauthorized purchases,” the proposed policy states.

“Therefore it is the intent of the county to minimize this risk by limiting the number of procurement cards issued to the fewest number of employees in each office and department or group of departments as is practical and by setting individual and monthly transaction limits on each card to the lowest levels that will accommodate the procurement need.”

Auditor Terry Hunt stressed that P-cards provide another way for the county to buy items already budgeted.

Sometimes, he said, it’s the only payment option available or can let departments make purchases online that would be more expensive through other means.

“It is a system that’s worked well for many years,” he said.

Since late November, the number of P-cards have decreased from 84 to 68, Hunt said, noting the reduction was voluntary.

Gov. Bruce Rauner on Wednesday gave his second State of the State address before the Illinois General Assembly.

He touched on a variety of topics, including jobs, property tax relief, term limits and the criminal justice system.

He also shared 10 long-term goals for education.

His full speech is available at illinois.gov. Here are some excerpts: • “To bring good jobs to Illinois, we have to make Illinois a place where it is good to do business. We must fix our workers’ comp system, labor regulations, liability costs and property taxes that make us uncompetitive and push job creators out.”

• “We need to regain public trust. We need to restore employer confidence that Illinois is a safe place to do business, so they will invest more here, growing more high-paying jobs and expanding our tax base. That starts with fundamental changes – term limits and redistricting reform.”

• A bipartisan commission that proposed reforms to the criminal justice system “recommended we enhance rehabilitation programming in our corrections system, and implement risk/needs assessments and evidence-based programs that target underlying issues that contribute to criminal behavior, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy and substance abuse treatment. These and other reforms will lead to fewer victims of crimes, a better pathway back for ex-offenders, and safer communities for all.”

School board OKs $1.4M proposal for high school

A tag-team of high school coaches and physical education teachers spoke to the board, describing canceled games and other scheduling problems at the school grounds because of poor con-

The synthetic turf would provide athletic teams with a reliable practice area they now lack, faculty members said.

Playing fields were sacrificed to the expansion of the high school building several years ago, Inglese said, leaving the school with little space for use by athletic teams, physical education classes and the marching band.

“We knew there was going to be a day of reckoning,” Inglese said.

There was no mention by school district officials of a petition that had been circulated by Batavia resident Sylvia Kepple, and signed by 221 district voters, calling for a referendum on the turf proposal.

However, Batavia resident Michelle Olache – who unsuccessfully ran for a school board seat last year – addressed the board, imploring members to put the issue on the ballot.

BATAVIA – Batavia High School will get a synthetic turf field after all – and just in time for next fall’s football season.

The school’s athletic faculty and the booster club teamed up Tuesday for presentations before the Batavia School Board, convincing board members that an artificial turf field is needed and affordable.

The board responded with a 7-0 vote to approve the plan, calling for the synthetic turf at Bulldog Stadium and a resurfaced running track circling the playing field.

“This begins a transformation we’ve needed for decades,” football and track coach Dennis Piron said.

In 2014, Batavia voters rejected a $15 million bond referendum that included artificial turf for the high school, among other improvements.

This time, the district plans to fund the turf project without a referendum, instead relying on money that are already available and a pledge of $500,000 from the booster club.

Moreover, the district expects to save somewhere between $85,000 and $100,000 by doing the track and turf projects at the same time, said Tony Inglese, the district’s chief financial officer.

Thunderous applause erupted when the board voted to award construction bids totaling $1.4 million.

The work is expected to begin May 15 and should be completed by Sept. 1, said Pat Browne, the district’s building and grounds director.

The booster club is ready to donate $200,000 this spring and an additional $300,000 over the next three to five years, club president Bill Hilliard said.

The $400,000 that the board had already budgeted for the track resurfacing will be included in the finance package.

Under a financing plan developed by Inglese for consideration by the board, about $200,000 would be transferred from a student activity fund, while the final $300,000 would come from projected budget surpluses.

NORTH AURORA – Those wanting to own a piece of North Aurora history soon will get their chance.

The village, which is replacing its red street signs with blue street signs, plans to sell the retired signs for $5 each. Proceeds will benefit North Aurora Days.

Village Administrator Steve Bosco described it as a win-win situation – it requires little effort from staff and satisfies a request from the public – that capitalizes on a unique opportunity.

“It’s so rare that these types of things happen,” he said of changing the village’s street signs at once. Usually, he said, signs are replaced as needed.

North Aurora is replacing the red signs to be in compliance with federal regulations.

People began requesting the old signs after discussions about the project began last fall, Bosco said, noting their reasons vary for wanting the objects. Some want the sign for the street they grew up on or where a relative lives, he said, while others simply like the street name or want one bearing their name.

“I don’t think there’s going to be a rhyme or reason to it,” he said.

Because weather has hampered the village’s efforts to replace every red sign, North

Revisiting Disney World 15 years later

I am a pretty lucky girl. My dad dragged my family to all the coolest vacation spots when I was less than 10 years old.

Whether it was seeing the astonishing Mount Rushmore or the flashy lights of Las Vegas, it seems I cannot even remember half of the greatest vacations I have ever been on simply because I was so young when I went. My brothers and I thank my father so much for this, as it is a major blessing.

In 2001, when I was about 4 years old, my dad had the ingenious idea to take my family to Disney World. It was a great time, my mother always told me. I can clearly remember pictures my parents took of me and my brothers standing in front of Cinderella’s castle or hugging Chip and Dale at Mickey Mouse’s breakfast. My dad even shot videos of my family walking around the park and waiting for a “Lion King” musical extravaganza to begin. I can specifically recall watching one video clip where I was giggling and delightfully dancing with my brother while listening to a music performer.

Yet, going on rides, visiting gift shops and taking in of all the little details, and the overall appearance of Disney World are a memory to me. It appears I actually don’t really remember anything from that trip other than the parts that were either photographed or recorded on video.

Now, I know I enjoy making fun of my dad about how he so frequently took my family on trips when I was a kid and could hardly remember them, but I know many families do quite the same. Families visit plenty of vacations spots when children are younger because the kids are excited about going to new places, and – at such a young age – most of the children aren’t in a phase

Just a few weeks ago, during my winter break from college, my family and I traveled to Orlando, Florida. Yes, we spent one whole day at Disney World.

We went on as many rides and attractions as we wanted, grazed the little Disney shops, watched the nighttime light parade and took in the beauty around us. The last time my family had been to Disney was 15 years ago, yet, going this second time around just seemed so much more pleasing. Even though I went as an 18-yearold – and my brothers at ages 19 and 22 – we all enjoyed just strolling around the park without worrying so much about going on every ride or complaining minute after minute about how we were dying to drink a juice box.

Realistically, I’m sure I probably had a fascinating day at Disney World when I was about 4. I may not remember how I felt when I met Snow White the first time around, but I’m sure my little heart was gleaming with joy. Disney World is a place for all ages, no matter what anyone believes.

Visiting a second time was truly enchanting.

Kasich has one good reason to root for Clinton

Hillary Clinton has an unlikely supporter rooting for her to win Iowa: Republican presidential candidate John Kasich.

OK, before dismissing this incongruity as irrelevant inside baseball, hear the political logic.

Kasich, the mainstream Republican, and Bernie Sanders, the socialist Democrat, are in a quiet but intense struggle to win over New Hampshire independents, who can vote in either party’s primary.

If Sanders wins the Iowa caucuses, the nation’s first presidential contest on Feb. 1, it may galvanize more of these independents to pick a Democratic ballot so they can vote for him eight days later in New Hampshire. If that happens, some polls suggest it could doom Kasich.

Independents make up more than 40 percent of New Hampshire’s elec-

torate and are expected to comprise over a third of primary voters there on Feb. 9. They can decide on election day which primary to vote in.

Granite State independents historically have been motivated less by ideology than by the persona and character of the candidates.

In surveys, Sanders, the senator from neighboring Vermont, is more popular with independent New Hampshire voters than Hillary Clinton. He’s running ahead of her now; getting a healthy chunk of the independent vote might assure a substantial victory. The two are locked in a tight battle in Iowa.

But Kasich, who isn’t trying to compete in Iowa, has focused heavily on New Hampshire independents, especially women, both in advertising and campaign appearances.

A recent poll by the Boston radio station WBUR found that of all the

candidates on both sides, only Sanders and Kasich have net favorable approval ratings from New Hampshire independents, while suggesting a large number remain undecided.

If Kasich, who is governor of Ohio, gets a healthy chunk of these voters, he’d be well positioned to finish second or third in the primary, behind Donald Trump but ahead of the other establishment candidates. That probably would keep him in the race in March – when 21 states have primaries and many delegates are at stake – perhaps as the mainstream alternative to Trump and Ted Cruz.

If he doesn’t do well with New Hampshire independents, Kasich acknowledges, his candidacy is dead.

He was supported by an average of just 2.8 percent of Republicans nationally in recent polls.

Brad Lawrence behind camera for Google Virtual Tours

ccasey@shawmedia.com There is something about windmills that has always fascinated Brad Lawrence.

The fascination began while spending time as a graduate student at Erasmus University in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Lawrence eventually had the idea to turn that passion virtual.

The Sugar Grove native holds the position of a “Google trusted photographer” and recently completed a Google Virtual Tour of Fabyan Windmill in Geneva. He used high dynamic-range photography on a digital single-lens reflex camera, or DSLR. The camera was placed on a tripod with a panoramic head.

This helped Lawrence capture each of his shots at a 360-degree view. The images, also known as photo spheres, get linked together using a particular Google software known as Google Street View.

“The tour starts around the outside of the windmill and simulates the actual, physical guided tour of the Fabyan Windmill,” Lawrence said. “This windmill is so unique, and I love everything about it. I was really excited doing it and love how it turned out.”

The tour, which was finished during fall 2015 and took around four hours to shoot, allows people to click their way through each level of the Fabyan Windmill, including a look at the top levels – where the capstones are located; an area normally off limits to the public.

Lawrence also said he was excited to have this tour completed in time for the Fabyan Windmill’s 100th anniversary of being located on the Fox River.

Speaking of location, when Lawrence first began to shoot the windmill project, he was partially delayed due to work being done on the structure. While at first it

seemed frustrating, it turned into a blessing in disguise, he said. The time of year played perfect into showing off Lawrence’s

favorite part of the virtual tour.

“The day I photographed the windmill, everything seemed like it was perfect,” Lawrence said. “The tour allows you to go out on the second level’s stage. The views are just spectacular. We had really interesting skies that day – there were awesome clouds, and it was way better that it got delayed to the fall. I absolutely love the views from the stage.”

Another reason Lawrence thought the idea for the windmill tour would be good was Colonel George Fabyan himself. With Fabyan’s passion for cryptography – the writing or solving of codes – Lawrence felt as if Fabyan would have been in large admiration of Google Virtual Tours.

“He would have loved this,” Lawrence said of the deceased former owner of the Fabyan Windmill. “The combination of his cutting-edge cryptography combined with the unique Google Street View technology is so appropriate.”

Though taking the photos took four hours, Lawrence said “moderating the tour” – where he actually goes through the software looking at the placement of the

panoramas to make sure everything is in the correct position – takes much longer than actually photographing it.

Lawrence did learn more about the windmill during his time putting the virtual tour together.

His discussions with the miller, the operator of the windmill, put some emphasis on Fabyan’s care for the structure.

“Windmills are normally like factories,” Lawrence said. “I was told that George Fabyan put a lot of time and effort into making this look really exceptional. It was his pride and joy. This was one of my favorite tours that I’ve done because it’s such a unique structure.”

The Fabyan Windmill joins a list of others places where Lawrence has completed a virtual tour. Other spots include Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva (home of the Kane County Cougars), Blackberry Historical Farm in Aurora (done in conjunction with Bob Lockwood of Full Armour Studios) and the Batavia Depot Museum.

Lawrence’s list currently totals 13 tours, with optimism for many more in the coming year.

FATHER KNOWS BEST Conroys adapting well with dad as coach

ccasey@shawmedia.com Ethan and Mason Conroy did not have the traditional childhood when it came to playing sports.

Sure, the two played just about everything there was to play, but they did so without their father being around much.

Their dad, Joe, was a member of the Northern Illinois women’s basketball coaching staff throughout most of their childhood.

But after recently being named head coach of the boys basketball team at Kaneland, Joe Conroy decided to bring both Ethan and Mason to Kaneland, from DeKalb, to play basketball for him this season.

“It really was a family decision,” Joe Conroy said.

“When they were young, I really wasn’t around much with me coaching collegiately, so I really didn’t get to spend too much time with them. To be able to be on the court, in the gym every day doing something we all love to do has been really special.”

Ethan, now a senior at Kaneland, played on the varsity team during all three years at DeKalb.

He was called up during the Chuck Dayton Holiday Tournament and postseason as a freshman and was a fulltime member of the varsity team as both a sophomore and junior.

It wasn’t exactly the easiest transition for Ethan and Mason, a junior, to switch schools.

But Ethan said once he knew they could make it happen, the decision almost made itself.

“I definitely wanted to come with,” said Ethan Conroy, the Knights’ starting point guard. “You always wish to play for your dad when you’re a little kid. I wasn’t sure if it was a possibility, but once it was, there was no doubt that I wanted to come play for my dad my

Although Joe Conroy did not coach his kids at a younger age, what did help the transition was the fact that he coached both Ethan and Mason, along with current Knights Ryan David, Jake Gomes and Jake Hed, as part of the DeKalb-based DC Hoops AAU team.

Joe Conroy knows that adding two new members to a high school basketball team, especially the coach’s children, isn’t always smoothest transition, either, but he did

speak to how well it has gone up to this point.

“I’ve had coaches come up to me and say you can’t tell Ethan and Mason are new to the team,” Joe Conroy said.

“That speaks volumes about the character of the kids at Kaneland High School. It’s the reason that I wanted them there with me.”

Joe Conroy admitted it can be difficult at times to not correct his sons a bit more than others at times, but said he has never been a coach to treat players differ-

ently. Mason Conroy could attest to that.

“He’s actually pretty equal on how he treats guys,” Mason Conroy said. “It’s pretty equal across the board. Sure, maybe he knows how to push Ethan and I a little because he’s our dad, but he’s been really good about that.”

Mason Conroy, also a guard, has come off the bench this season. He’s had to adjust to the difference in minutes from game to game, but has loved having his father as his coach.

“I’ve liked it a lot,” Mason Conroy said. “He knows how to push me, knows how I play and can put me in the lineup how he wants. It’s been a lot of fun, to be honest.”

Then comes the aftermath.

While all three Conroys agreed that it’s just about impossible to completely escape basketball at home, they all feel things get handled in a much less intense manner.

However, when asked if the critiques about their individual game gets brought home, Joe Conroy knows fairly early how the boys feel he’s going to react.

“They usually choose to ride home with their mother,” Joe Conroy said with a laugh. “So that’s the separation. But when I get home, they want to know. ... They want to know how they did, what they can improve on.

We watch film a lot. It’s not just Ethan and Mason, though. Every kid on this team in invested.”

Even though he’s gotten chances throughout his coaching career to reach the collegiate level, Joe Conroy hinted that his first year at Kaneland might be one of his more rewarding gigs yet.

“Not one kid on this team isn’t willing to sacrifice himself for what we’re trying to accomplish as a team,” Joe Conroy said. “It’s a special team I’ve gotten the chance to coach. Between that and having my kids to go every step of the way with me, it has been awesome.”

But arithmetic isn’t the only orderly thing about a group that includes the club’s top two point scorers. They fall in with each other off the ice, too, enjoying movies and table tennis, among other activities.

“I think that has a lot to do with it,” Versich said. “We hang out quite often, and I think that really translates out on the ice.”

Coach Dan Muse first put the trio together during a preseason tournament in Yekatarinburg, Russia, as the Steel represented the USHL and USA Hockey at the Junior Club World Cup. Each skated with different lines when the season began in late September, but little was lost in translation once “9-10-11” regrouped before the league’s holiday break last month. Laczynski, of Shorewood, has 12 goals and a team-best 27 assists in 31 games. His 39 points are a club high, nine ahead of his nearest pursuer, Duhaime. Versich is one of six Steel forwards who averages a half-point per game, entering the week with five goals and 13 assists in 35 games.

Minute by minute: Backup goaltender John Lethemon surged past starter Daniel Vladar in minutes and games played when Vladar recently missed extended time to compete for the junior national team in his native Czech Republic.

Vladar, a third-round pick of the Boston Bruins in the 2015 NHL Draft, has since returned stateside, but Lethemon is steeled in the knowledge his development took a fast track.

“I thought I got to build a lot of confidence being able to play more games back-toback,” Lethemon said. “It only

helps you as a goalie to develop more and get used to those different types of situations.

Lethemon is 11-10-2-0 with a 2.90 goals-against average and .903 save percentage. Vladar is 4-6-1-3 with a 2.20 GAA and .920 save percentage.

“Now that he’s back, we both just keep working hard in practice, pushing each other and trying to get this team more wins,” Lethemon said.

Lethemon will look to keep boosting his résumé at Michigan State next season.

He grew up about an hour east of the school’s East Lansing, Michigan, campus and entertained early ideas about starring for the hockey team courtesy of his aunt, an MSU graduate.

“She kind of brainwashed me, if you will, at a young age,” Lethemon said. “She al-

ways said when I was young, wouldn’t it be cool if one day you played for them. And it was always my dream to play for them, and I was always a huge fan growing up. So when I got the opportunity, it was really a no-brainer for me.”

Bittersweet deal: Defenseman Karlis Cukste, of Latvia, lost a captain but welcomed a countryman when the Steel traded Marcel Godbout to Madison for fellow forward Haralds Egle this month.

Cukste, 18, grew up knowing of Egle, but shared playing opportunities were slim because Egle is one year older.

“It’s definitely a good feeling when I heard he was coming here,” Cukste said. “It was kind of hard to lose our captain, but we have to live with that. It was during hockey. It happens. But it was kind of cool that somebody I knew was coming.”

Decker ‘loving’ freshman year at DePaul ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber While the weather outside stays frightful in the Chicago area, Kyle Decker is still running hurdles.

The track season has two sides – indoor and outdoor – and fortunately while it’s freezing cold, athletes are able to compete inside.

For Decker, a St. Charles East product who runs hurdles at DePaul University, running inside and running outside certainly have their differences. Indoor racing provides a benefit now, but it won’t be long before athletes will compete outdoors again.

“The main differences I can think of are just physical events,” Decker said. “The

hurdle events change altogether. It’s 60 meters inside and 110 and then 400 meters outside. But as far as weather conditions go, you have to be in the mindset that everyone’s competing under the same conditions, so it’s not like you’re at a disadvantage. You really just have to be mentally in it for outdoor and just get ready for the race that you’re running.”

Decker, a freshman at DePaul, dealt with the differences between inside and outside for years. But the biggest difference he’s facing now is the difference between high school and college, a jump in the level of competition that has been somewhat intimidating.

“I ran throughout all of my four years of high school, so I’m used to high school meet atmospheres, but the

to get used to,” he said. “You’ll be in your lane and you’re running against huge Division I schools, and it can be intimidating, very intimidating.

And there’s even professionals at meets, but you’ve just got to stay in the zone and focus on your race and just do what you’ve been doing for the last four years of your life.”

Away from the track, the transition hasn’t been quite as challenging. The biology major is loving his classes, loving the campus and loving the general feeling of college life.

“The adjustment’s going really well for me personally,” Decker said. “I’ve gotten really good grades. I love my major. I’m a biology major hopefully going to pharmacy school. I’ve been doing very well adjusting socially. I love the campus of DePaul and the city atmosphere. It’s a great fit

for me.”

It’s just year one of college for Decker, but things are going well. And he’s not putting any limit on his goals for this season.

“For personal goals, I’d say I really want to place at the conference level,” he said.

“I’m looking to place top three even, try to get that first-place win for the 60-meter hurdles.

And as a member of the team, my main goal is just to contribute as much as I can to the hopeful conference champion at DePaul for indoor track and outdoor. I’m really looking forward to the rest of our competition season.”

22 Benefits of mammograms are less in woman ages 40 to 49

Dear Readers : In yesterday’s column, I answered a question from a 47-year-old woman who had never had a mammogram and wondered if she should have one. She had heard one group of experts – the American Cancer Society (ACS) – had recently changed its recommendations on this issue.

The reader’s question raises a broader issue: What are the benefits of regular mammograms and what are the risks for a woman like her? A screening test, such as a mammogram, looks for early signs of a disease.

It aims to catch the disease in a curable stage.

That’s the benefit.

But not everyone has the same benefit. A woman is more likely to benefit from a screening test if her risk of developing the disease is higher.

For example, a woman whose mother or sister has had breast cancer is at higher risk for getting breast cancer herself.

Such women often begin mammograms before age 40. The new guidelines we talked about in yesterday’s and today’s columns apply only to women at average risk.

Another important factor that affects a woman’s risk of breast cancer is her age. Breast cancer is fairly unusual in women age 40-49, but becomes more common after age 50. So the benefits of mammograms are less in women age 40-49 than in women age 50-59.

How great are the benefits in women age 40-49, like our reader who asked the question?

My Harvard Medical School colleagues Drs. Nancy Keating and Lydia Pace estimate if 10,000 women turning 40 were screened each year for 10 years, about 200 cases of breast cancer would be discovered.

However, in about 100 of those 200 women, the cancer would be so slow-growing it would

Unfortunately, the opposite also is true: Some of the 200 women in whom cancer is discovered will die anyway, because the cancer already has spread by the time it is discovered. My colleagues estimate, of the 10,000 women who get annual mammograms, five will be saved from premature death caused by breast cancer. That’s the benefit of annual mammograms in women age 40-49.

Now let’s look at the risks in these 10,000 women receiving annual mammograms. In about 6,000, a suspicious spot will be seen on the mammogram.

That is, 6,000 women will live for some time with the fear they have cancer.

They will have a repeat mammogram.

About 1,000 of these repeat mammograms still will look suspicious.

This will lead to a biopsy, which is stressful and uncomfortable.

The biopsies will find about 100 women have a cancer that is at risk to spread. That is, 100 of the 6,000 women who were told they might have cancer will prove to have a cancer that is truly fearful.

Now, to your question, dear reader. The new ACS recommendations say a 47-year-old woman of average risk for breast cancer, and without a past mammogram, should get one.

I’m hopeful my description of the risks and benefits will help your decision.

Young adults who move often or leave home for college are more likely to meet people of different backgrounds.

Also, few communities are religiously homogeneous anymore, so even high school students living at home have the opportunity to form bonds with people of other religions.

When 200 teenage girls were asked their opinions on religion and dating in a teen magazine survey, 97 percent said religious influences may have a greater impact when it comes to marriage.

The key to a successful interfaith marriage is a mutual commitment to respect completely each other’s convictions and traditions without putting pressure on a mate to convert.

South had a so-so hand for a three-level weak jump overcall, but the vulnerability was in his favor.

West’s three-spade response showed the values for a single raise. (With game-invitational strength, he would have jumped to four spades; and with game-forcing power, he would have cue-bid four clubs.)

Then North adopted a bad tactic: If you are willing to go to five clubs, do it immediately; do not give the opponents extra bidding space. Also, after East showed his second suit, and West retreated to four spades, North ought to have doubled and probably gone plus 500.

If West had led the spade ace, five clubs doubled would have failed. But when he led a heart, South took full advantage. He won with dummy’s heart ace and continued with the heart queen.

East defended well by playing low, but South discarded a spade.

That scenario was repeated at trick three: heart jack not covered and spade pitched.

Then declarer correctly led dummy’s last heart, and even though East played his king, South threw his last spade. A moment later, declarer got into his hand with a spade ruff to take the club finesse and ended with plus 550.

Special to The Washington Post In 2016, Pantone invites you to reconsider your feelings about pale pink and blue.

Instead of remembering them as stuffy or relegating them to nurseries, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director for Pantone Color Institute, suggested pairing the pastel “colors of the year,” Rose Quartz and Serenity, with the bold colors of recent years. It will make both feel fresh.

As the world’s foremost color-trend watcher, Eiseman had noticed blush pink and a soft periwinkle blue popping up on runways and in interiors, but it was a retrospective for 20th-century American painter Agnes Martin at the Tate Modern in London that arrested her attention. “I was just taken aback,” Eiseman said of Martin’s work, which used pale color washes in abstract forms.

“It was an unexpected usage of color in a grid or in striping, and yet it has this quiet, soft inviting feel about it.”

But it’s the pairing of these soft pastels with other colors that really has Eiseman jazzed.

Take a rich chocolate or modern aubergine, for example, and add a blush pink or a lighter blue (don’t stress over matching Rose Quartz and Serenity exactly), and you have something new for the new year, a fresh start. And isn’t that what trends are all about?

What’s cooking in kitchens for 2016?

The Washington Post Are you spending three hours or more in your kitchen every day?

According to the just-released 2016 Houzz Kitchen Trends Survey, nearly twothirds of homeowners spent more than three hours in their kitchens doing things such as watching TV, entertaining, eating and reading, in addition to the traditional cooking and baking.

The annual kitchen survey by the online source for home remodeling and design polled more than 2,400 U.S. homeowners who are planning or recently completed a kitchen renovation project.

The survey is a snapshot of what American homeowners are cooking up in one of the most popular rooms in the house. In terms of how much

a kitchen renovation costs these days, the survey showed that 39 percent of renovating homeowners spent $25,000 or less on kitchen renovations and 30 percent are spending more than $50,000.

So what are the hottest trends? We took a look at the 28-page survey and here are some of the results worth noting and stashing in the “kitchen remodel” online folder.

• Wood floors rule. The survey revealed that 34 percent of the participants chose hardwood (one exception is in the South, where porcelain or ceramic tile is the top choice).

Engineered wood came in at 12 percent nationwide. And you thought cork was the hottest thing in your cul de sac – only 2 percent chose cork floors.

• Keep the walls neutral.

As you mop up from the holidays, it’s a good time to take stock of any damage that may have been done to your entertaining essentials.

Inspect your dinner plates, wineglasses, flatware, tablecloths and napkins, as well as your serving pieces, to see whether you need any repair work done. Or perhaps you should budget for some additional salad plates or water goblets for next year. Maybe your menorah has one wobbly holder that needs to be reattached.

Perhaps your grandmother’s damask tablecloth has a small tear that should be mended.

The post-holiday period is one of the busiest times for Replacements, Ltd., the McLeansville, N.C.-based behemoth of old and new china, crystal and silver patterns. The company has been in business almost 35 years and stocks a warehouse the size of eight football fields with 12 million pieces. It also

has a restoration department that repairs flatware, crystal and china.

The busiest time for Replacements is October through January. Customers order extra plates and cordial glasses and then the hotline staff gears up for the post-holiday emergency calls, according to spokeswoman Lisa Conklin.

“The day after Thanksgiving is huge,” Conklin said. “And on the weekend after Christmas, we received lots of calls from people wanting to replace pieces they had broken themselves.

Then there are those who were at someone else’s home and broke something belonging to their host. They all want to get it replaced before the next round of entertaining.”

The Shahs chose a Silestone quartz center island with “waterfall” sides that extend the surface to the floor for a clean, modern look. of traditional homes and yet has been drawn to contemporary-style homes when looking on Web sites such as Houzz.

Said Uptal: “I went to the University of Texas and lived in Austin for a while, which is a really progressive city, and that’s where I got a taste for contemporary style. Our

biggest priority was an open floor plan with an open kitchen because we both love to cook. We also needed to be in a place with good schools.”

Concannon, who has experience in custom home building, helped the Shahs recognize that they needed to broaden their search beyond North Arlington

to find a home that fit their budget and space needs. Utpal said they met with a lender and established a budget of $480,000 for the home purchase and $500,000 for the renovations.

“We lost out on so many homes because we were competing with all-cash offers,” Kinjal said. “When Genevieve

brought us back here, we couldn’t believe the house was still on the market. I waited outside while Utpal looked at the inside and I realized that the backyard was exactly what we wanted, with these huge oak trees and a level lawn, perfect for kids.”

Utpal said that if the house had been in better condition or in North Arlington, it would have cost at least $100,000 to $200,000 more.

The Shahs, along with their 8-month-old son, Kabir, recently moved into their home in Falls Church, which is close to subway stations, restaurants, entertainment, and two farmers markets, all of which are enticing to the Shahs. In addition, Utpal said the neighborhood met their priority for a good school district.

In addition to creating a contemporary house that meets their needs, the Shahs wanted an energy-efficient home with healthy air for their growing family.

“We did a blower test on the house when they bought it and the result was a score of 220, which is way above the norm of 100,” Moore said. “We’ll do another test soon, but we think it should be around 75 or so with all the energy-efficient features we put into the house.”

Moore said that many of the green features in the Shahs’ house didn’t cost more to install, such as sealing the ductwork and adding extra insulation. He said that many small energy-efficient building techniques add up to as much as a 20 percent increase in energy efficiency. The Shahs chose a tankless water heater for energy efficiency because it’s more compact than a conventional water heater. The home also has LED lighting, high-efficiency Andersen windows, and a high-efficiency heating and air-conditioning system.

The 3,100-square-foot California contemporary house in Falls Church, Va., is ideal for Utpal and Kinjal Shah’s tastes and needs. But that was hardly the case when the couple first saw the then-1,460square-foot rambler before its major makeover.

“When we first came to this house, I walked in the front door and right out the back because it smelled so terrible,” Kinjal Shah said.

“The people who owned it must have smoked packs of cigarettes every day for decades,” she added. “The place smelled like cats and dogs, too.”

The Shahs told their real estate agent, Genevieve Concannon, director of the custom homes division at Smith Schnider real estate development in Arlington, that the house wasn’t for them, although their plan was to buy a fixer-upper.

“The house was in bad shape and even had a gap in the floor that you had to jump over because beetles had eaten through the floor joists,” Concannon said. “But we eventually ended back there after months of frustration because I knew that the footprint of the house and the beautiful backyard would work for them.”

Like many millennials, the Shahs were ready to move out of their one-bedroom condo and start a family in a larger home.

Although they had a healthy budget for house hunting, they also had some specific ideas of the type of home they wanted.

They were open to a fixer-upper that they could convert into a California contemporary-style place. Utpal, 36, works at the U.S. Patent Office and Kinjal, 34, is a federal contractor. Both work in Northern Virginia.

“We hoped to stay in North Arlington for the schools and because we liked living there,” Utpal said. “We couldn’t find a contemporary home in that area that fit our budget, and everything that we did see was either an old Colonial or Craftsman-style place that wasn’t our style.”

“They were interested in tapping into a male audience that in the past five years or more has been taking more of an interest in their clothes,” said Emil Corsillo, 36. “These same guys who were now focusing on shopping for clothing could also become important housewares customers.”

About 61 percent of renovators painted their walls one of three colors: gray, beige or white. The outliers liked green (10 percent) and yellow (8 percent).

• Storage is key. The most valued functional aspect of a kitchen is storage, the survey found: 60 percent of

75 percent of those surveyed were going with stainless for the new appliances in their updated kitchens. (White came in at 10 percent and black at 8 percent.)

• And who said granite was out? Although design divas

may turn up their noses at granite (“so 1990s”), it’s still the most desirable and practical choice out there. For 45

percent, the popular natural stone was installed as their new countertop material. Runners-up: engineered quartz (26 percent) and quartzite (14 percent).

The heat burns and weakens the fibers, and can also melt manufactured fibers, such as polyester. If the damage is slight you might be able to improve the look. Brush the area to remove any charring.

If the tablecloth is washable, rub liquid detergent into the scorched area. Launder. If the stain remains, bleach with an all-fabric nonchlorine bleach.”

“We can reshape it, polish out any of the marks,” he said. “The problem may be later, in that a spoon that we fix will be a lot shinier and nicer-looking than your other old flatware.” This type of repair usually starts at $35 and goes up, Brettell says.

• A chipped crystal champagne flute: Grinding crystal is risky business: If there is a hairline crack in the crystal that you don’t see, your glass may break on the wheel, Brettell said. But if you have a simple chip on the rim of a wineglass, chances are it can be smoothed out. At Awesome Metal, the charge is $35 and up. At Replacements, crystal repair starts at $16 plus the cost of round-trip shipping to North Carolina.

• A burned copper saucepan: Brettell said he can probably save your pot and polish up the outside to make it look beautiful. He can also replace the lining if needed. The cost would depend on the size of the pot and the damage.
