Kaneland passes on STEM school opportunity SUGAR GROVE – Calling it “one of the most difficult” decisions she has had to make in a decade, interim Kaneland Superintendent Renee Goier on Monday recommended against the district joining a STEM partnership school at this time.

School board members were in agreement with Goier, and the district will not pursue the opportunity to join the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School on the Aurora University campus.

“It is hard to pass it up, but it comes with additional cost to the district,” Goier said at the school board meeting at Kaneland Harter Middle School.

She added that it really is a five- or six-year commitment. In a memo to board members, Goier noted that “with the uncertainty of

She said the district instead will continue to explore other STEM opportunities. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.

At a previous meeting, administrators described the opportunity as “unique.”

The school is open only to districts that have students with Aurora addresses. It was touted by state leaders before its creation. In 2013, then-Gov. Pat Quinn, in a news release, commended

“the entire Aurora community for collaborating on this effort to ensure our students get a unique educational experience that will prepare them for 21st century careers.”

If officials chose to join, the cost to the district would have been estimated at $375,000. The plan would call for Kaneland to have 50 students at the school, as well as two teachers. Board member Peter Lopatin at a previous meeting asked whether there could be a better use of such money for STEM education.

On Monday, he said “thank you” to Goier.

Teresa Witt, the board vice president, said it would be a good opportunity “if we had that money to spend.”

“The reality is, we don’t have the money,” she said.

Gale Pavlak, the board secretary, said it would

be better to have a plan to incorporate STEM education to all Kaneland students.

She said it “just doesn’t sound right” to limit participation to 50 students.

Board member Veronica Bruhl said she would have wanted to explore the opportunity to join the STEM school. She called it “such a special thing … a once-in-alifetime thing.”

“Who knows if we’ll ever have this opportunity again?” Bruhl asked.

Goier said it is possible there would be another chance to join.

“Hopefully, the opportunity is there if we see a need for it in the future,” Goier said.

Batavia School Board looks at improvements Two boilers, stadium track need to be replaced at Batavia High School

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia School Board members on Tuesday discussed what work needs to be done in Batavia School District 101 as part of the district’s building and grounds capital improvement plan.

Overall, the buildings in the school district are in good

shape, said Pat Browne, the district’s director of buildings and grounds. The capital improvement plan is updated each year.

“We have quality buildings in Batavia,” Browne told school board members. “We don’t have overwhelming concerns.”

The plan lists $3.8 million in high priority projects for

fiscal year 2015-16.

The condition of Batavia High School, originally built in 1965, was rated as “poor” in the capital improvement plan.

The plan noted that significant systems will have to be replaced in the building in the next few years, including two main boilers and multiple air handlers.

In addition, the stadium track at the high school is deteriorating rapidly and needs to be replaced, according to the plan.

The average score for the

district’s buildings is 4 percent, which is considered being in good condition, Browne said.

Staff will bring recommendations to board members in February on what the district’s priority projects should be.

Voters in November soundly defeated Batavia School District 101’s $15 million capital improvement referendum. The district wanted to issue up to $15 million in alternate revenue bonds to fund the projects.

The plan would have in-

cluded the installation of a synthetic turf field at Bulldog Stadium and would have added a second multi-use synthetic turf field.

The project carried an estimated $7.6 million price tag, including $4.7 million for the multi-use synthetic field. The $4.7 million price tag included a $2.9 million underground stormwater detention system and $490,000 in sports field lighting.

The referendum also sought voter approval for capital projects throughout the district.

Campton Hills man in custody Faces charges of battery, assault in attack at Delnor Hospital

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A 30-year-old Campton Hills man was taken into police custody in Indiana on Tuesday night, hours after he was involved in an incident that caused a temporary lockdown at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, according to a news release from the city of Geneva.

According to the release, Justin B. Patzer has been charged with felony domestic battery, domestic battery and aggravated assault. The release indicated he was taken into custody at 8:45 p.m. by the Hammond Police Department after Geneva police secured charges for an arrest warrant. Geneva police advised authorities in Hammond that Patzer might be in Indiana.

The release indicated that Patzer would be taken to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department in Crown Point, Indiana, for an extradition hearing to take place today.

Patzer had been wanted in connection with an assault and car crash that took place Tuesday morning at Delnor Hospital. Earlier Tuesday, Geneva police said he was wanted on warrants for disorderly conduct, battery, aggravated assault and leaving the scene of an accident, all related to his visit to the hospital.

Police on Tuesday morning said Patzer was 31, but later clarified that he was 30.

Officers were dispatched at 9:35 a.m. Tuesday to the hospital, 300 S. Randall Road, Geneva, for reports of a man running through the hospital brandishing a knife, the news release states.

Patzer attempted to choke the relative, pulled out a knife and made threats of violence, according to a news release.

Patzer then fled the hospital about 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, and no knife injuries were reported, the release states.

The hospital campus and attached buildings were placed on lockdown for about 90 minutes, searched and cleared, according to Nash.

Police later determined in the investigation that Patzer left the hospital campus in a red 2004 Dodge Caravan, according to the release. The minivan had some damage

on the front-end passenger side. Patzer was involved in a crash with another car while leaving the hospital campus, Nash wrote in her email.

He said the first thing he saw when he walked into the hospital was a female police officer with her hand on her gun.

“When I walked in, they tried to push me into the cafeteria,” Cunz said.

Cunz said he wasn’t given details about the situation, only that the hospital was on lockdown. He said he was allowed to go to his doctor on an upper floor, but shortly after telling staff what was going on downstairs, the upper floor went on lockdown as well.

“My reaction was, ‘What’s going on?’ ” Cunz said.

What once was an in ner-city drug used by experienced drug users is now a high school drug found in the Chicago suburbs, he said.

But, he said, tackling heroin means tackling other drug use – namely Vicodin.

“If you can stop the Vicodin, you can stop the heroin,” Talbot said Tuesday during the Straight Talk About Drugs presentation at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre.

Funded by the Aurora-based Dunham Fund, the event was presented by Chris Walk Against Substance Abuse and the Kane County Chronicle.

It coincided with National Drug Facts Week, which ends Sunday.

Compared to when he began his law enforcement career in the 1970s, today’s drugs are cheaper and more potent, Talbot said.

For example, he said, $10 in the 1970s would buy people four hits of heroin with a 3 to 3½ percent purity.

Now, he said $10 pays for 12 hits that are 63 percent pure.

Synthetic designer drugs, such as those marketed as bath salts or potpourri, also are more potent than the plant-based drugs they are replacing, Talbot said.

“Young people have no idea how powerful and dangerous these new synthetic drugs [are],” he said, noting it is difficult to regulate them because new versions continually pop up.

Talbot encouraged parents in the audience to talk to their kids about the dangers of drug abuse because statistics show that is the No. 1 effective anti-drug program.

“Make that talk tonight,” Talbot said.

Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer agreed, sharing his experience with his own children.

“It starts out at home,” he said.

But, he added, “There is no perfect message to make this stop.”

Kimberly Groll, a licensed clinical professional counselor, offered suggestions for what parents should do if they suspect their child is using drugs.

Steps include determining the right course of action, speaking to the child when the child isn’t angry or under the influence and let the child know what you expect, she said.

She said parents also have the right to check their child’s phone and room.

“Be a nosy parent,” Groll said.

If treatment is part of the solution, she said, know what the counselor or therapist is qualified to treat, and match the treatment with the behavior or drug.

“One size treatment does not fit all,” she said.

When the snow hits, the St. Charles Park District plow crew and sidewalk crew know they better get up early SPONSORED BY

By Stephanie Kohl According to Jeff Goodrich, assistant superintendent of parks, whenever it snows, the plow team knows to arrive by 5 a.m. The team is responsible for the plowing of 17 different park district sites, including 5 of the main rental facilities where events and programs are scheduled. The sidewalk crew is responsible for keeping the sidewalks clean at these same sites.

In addition to making sure all the park district’s parks and facilities are clear of snow. The St. Charles Park District also preps and maintains its ice rinks and sled hills.

The St. Charles Park District has ice rinks at Langum Park, Timber Trails Park, Davis Park and Lincoln Park. Hockey is only allowed at Langum Park.

“Preparations started in December to construct the sides and liners,” Goodrich said. “Then

we had to wait for the cold weather to fill them with water.”

Every day, park district staff visits each rink and shovels the snow off and sweeps the shavings off. The rinks are resurfaced as necessary. Goodrich said the Langum Park rink is resurfaced about three times each week because it gets such high use. The other parks, he said, are resurfaced about twice each week.

“We want to make them as smooth as possible,” he said.

Both Langum Park and Timber Trails Park are also home to sledding hills. Goodrich said safety fences are installed on the hills in November. The fences are intended to direct where sledding should occur. The sled hills are open as soon as they are covered in snow.

Goodrich said while the parks do have sled at your own risk warnings, the hills are inspected daily. Debris are removed and jumps are broken up on a daily basis.

2 charged after police interrupt car burglary

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Two men in their 20s are facing criminal charges after a St. Charles police officer interrupted an apparent burglary on the city’s east side, according to a St. Charles police report.

Ryan M. Kitowski, 22, of St. Charles, and Nicholas Michael Humbles, 20, of the 3N400 block of Oak Road, West Ryan M. Chicago, were Kitowski charged Saturday with burglary from a motor vehicle.

Humbles also was charged with possession of a controlled Nicholas substance.

According to Michael the report, an of- Humbles ficer was on patrol in the area of Weber Road and Larson Avenue about 4:30 a.m. Saturday and saw a black Dodge truck with a door open

and a pair of legs sticking out of it on a driveway along Larson Avenue.

As the officer slowed, someone reportedly ran away from the driveway and onto Weber Road.

The person inside the truck, later identified as Kitowski, exited the vehicle as the officer walked up the driveway and complied with orders to get on the ground, police reported.

A large red gym bag reportedly lay next to the truck.

Kitowski claimed it was his friend’s bag and that they were looking in their friend’s car, according to the report.

The homeowner, however, reportedly told police he didn’t know Kitowski and hadn’t given anyone permission to be in the truck. The center console had been rifled through, but the only thing missing was change, according to the report.

Humbles was arrested later that day, according to police.

Online records for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office indicated Kitowski and Humbles remained in custody Tuesday afternoon.

LILY LAKE – Sheriff’s deputies called to assist another agency at a Lily Lake business found several expended fire extinguishers and a broken window, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

The deputies were dispatched to a business in the 44W300 block of Route 64 near Route 47 at 5:36 p.m. Thursday to assist the Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District, which was there for a fire alarm, according to the report.

Several discharged fire extinguishers were inside the business, and the floor was covered in a dry chemical powder, police reported.

Additionally, police reported, a fluorescent light fixture and ceiling tile were knocked down in the corner of the lobby, and a window was broken near a staircase to the office.

Police reportedly found a brick at the bottom of the stairs.

An outside wooden staircase led to the broken window, police reported, noting there were fresh footprints in the snow and an expended fire extinguisher on the ground.

Two more used fire extinguishers were found along Route 47 below the Great Western Trail overpass, police reported.

Nothing was reported missing except for the fire extinguishers, according to the report.

Early on in his life, George became a stellar athlete and excelled at football. He attended Marmion Military Academy from 1947-51 and in 1995 was inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. George also received the Centurion Award from Marmion in 2010. After graduating high school, George attended Dayton University on a football scholarship. He returned home after a year to help on the farm and would not return to college until the early 70’s when he attended Waubonsee Community College, and continued on at Lewis University to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement.

The love of football and sports kept George actively involved in semi-professional football and professional wrestling throughout the late 50’s and early 60’s. He played for the Aurora Clippers and the Elmhurst Travelers and enjoyed a great relationship with a number of notable local heroes. He is also remembered by many for the years of wrestling in the Midwest area as “Tiny Kramer.”

Behind every great man is an even greater woman, and George met up with that fantastic lady after high school. Trudy (Bark) grew up in Sandwich, Illinois and was introduced to George through mutual friends. They married in 1953, shortly before George entered the Army, and they resided at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. There, they started their family while stationed on the base.

Then in 1994 Aurora University gave him the Lifetime Achievement Award and inducted him into the Hall of Fame.

Until the time of his death, he was many times asked why he didn’t retire. His answer was always the same: “Because I love selling.”

A memorial service was held March 28, 2015, at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, 102 South 2nd Street, Geneva, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Make a Wish Foundation.

ST. CHARLES – Illinois Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Todd Maisch said he believes that Amazon’s announcement that it will start collecting sales taxes in February as part of a new state law will be helpful for local retailers.

“Competition with Amazon now has gotten a little better,” Maisch said during Tuesday’s Illinois Chamber Update Luncheon at Pheasant Run Todd Maisch Resort in St. Charles.

The event was presented by the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce Legislative Committee, in conjunction with the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, St. Charles Chamber of Commerce, Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce and Bartlett Chamber of Commerce.

Maisch spoke about the challenges facing businesses today.

One of those issues is workers’ compensation, which he said must be reformed.

“We need to take on that issue,” he said. “It’s time for a game changer.”

He also is opposed to any legislative effort to boost the state’s $8.25 an hour minimum wage.

There has been an effort to increase the state’s minimum wage to $10.65 an hour by 2016.

“We already have one of the highest minimum wages in the country,” Maisch said. “Raising the minimum wage is a job killer.”

New state Comptroller Leslie Munger spoke about some of the challenges facing the state, including $6.7 billion in unpaid bills. Gov. Bruce Rauner recently appointed her to the post after the death of Judy Baar Topinka, who had been elected in November to her second term as comptroller.

“I have my work cut out for me,” Munger said. “I believe we have to bring fiscal responsibility to our state. We have to live within our means. It is our duty to spend every dollar wisely.”

SUGAR GROVE – Sugar Grove residents will be able to plan their outdoor activities in the coming months better with the next brochure they receive from the Sugar Grove Park District.

The park district previously published three brochures – one for the fall, one for the summer and one for the spring.

The district will continue to publish three brochures, but the next brochure will be a spring-summer brochure.

“We are still doing three, but we have kind of shifted the months,” said Karen Pritchard, the district’s superintendent of recreation. “What it turned out is that in the summer, we really didn’t have as many things in the brochure.”

The district’s fall brochure will cover the park district’s programs from August through October, and its winter brochure will cover the months of November, December, January and February, she said.

Parents who won’t vaccinate kids put others at risk, too

By PETULA DVORAK The Washington Post The parents who are against vaccines for measles, mumps, rubella and other childhood diseases have proved a point – and it’s a scary one. They are no longer just putting their own kids at risk. By taking their unvaccinated children to the happiest place on Earth and touching off a measles outbreak at Disneyland, the anti-vaxxers put hundreds of other children in jeopardy, too.

Measles on this level hasn’t been seen in the States since the 1970s. So far, the disease has spread to 11 states and Mexico, infecting about 70 people in less than a month. Also making a comeback: whooping cough and diphtheria.

Bravo, anti-vaxxers. You’ve gone beyond sowing post-Super Bowl fear in 2012, when 14 people were infected with the measles after unvaccinated kids visited the Super Bowl Village in Indianapolis. Now you’ve tainted Disneyland, too.

Maybe this is all a stealthy attack on the mainstream stuff that some of the organic, cage-free, Buddha-mama, mindful-parenting philosophies shun? Is a mac ‘n cheese factory next? An orchestrated sneezing attack on every McDonald’s?

Diphtheria for every child in the Chuck E. Cheese’s ball pit?

This didn’t have to happen. In 2004, there were just 37 measles cases in the United States. Ten years later? We saw 644, according to Pediatrics, the medical journal.

It’s all about fashionable philosophy, not changes in medicine.

The measles, mumps and rubella vaccine wigs out some parents because about a decade ago, people started to assert a link between immunization and autism, fueled by the studies of a now-disgraced British doctor, Andrew Wakefield.

Problem was, study after study refuted Wakefield’s autism research. And in 2011, the British medical establishment withdrew its endorsement of Wakefield’s study and labeled his data bogus.

There are few cases in which doctors have decided that a child would not do well medically by being immunized.

Some religions are against vaccinations, too. For those people, schools allow exemptions so that children can attend school at their own risk.

Refusing to immunize puts the rest of us at risk. And unless there is sound science and the guidance of a good doctor, it’s a pretty bogus way to hedge a bet in that game of parenting roulette.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ‘THE INTERVIEW’ REVEALED To the Editor: Buoyed by recent cyber attacks, the true perpetrators of whom remain unknown, one lone nut-job dictator claims victory against an electronics giant.

What was gained and what was lost has not been disclosed.

A poorly written, amateurishly acted, comedic action movie promoted by a ne’er-do-well Hollywood duo pitched to a major film studio. The retribution aimed in cause of said movie depicts the leader in a buffoonish light and laughable demise. The company seizes an opportunity to make lemonade from lemons: promoting the movie heavily.

Dictator also promotes himself heavily – threatening even greater chaos against the organization, government and anyone else, for that matter, who dares to attend showings.

The film company cries many crocodile tears in response to

the proposed attack.

The Western press, eager to vilify any real, perceived or imaged bogeyman, jumps on the story with all the bluster it musters! Hollywood types, only those of current importance, weigh in en masse in defense of the film, studio and constitutional rights purported to be in imminent danger of being lost.

The iconic studio replies by acquiescing, pulling film for the safety of the populace.

A new savior is born!

Even our own president takes the bait and weighs in on national news. He decries the studio’s release cancellation, chiding constitutional protection and advises: blah, blah, blah, blah, BLAH. Studio reconsiders – free publicity now fever pitch – releasing the film at Christmas only to select theaters. Many sold out hours before.

Results: 1. Dennis “The Worm” Rodman

made no appearances in defense or offense of his dictator buddy.

2. Dictator got much free publicity, and in his game, there’s no such thing as bad press.

3. Film studio’s weak and poorly scripted film, which critics lambasted, now given more free attention than a major blockbuster could have garnered.

4. The dynamic duo of writers and actors certainly are now handed another opportunity, whereas previously, such a bomb would have relegated them to the back of the class, wearing the dunce cap.

5. Company makes bank on that which would have been a sure loser!

6. Perhaps the next movie could involve our own leader, an Arab king or even Vladimir Putin.

Saddled with foul trouble, Van Bogaert felt especially drained as Kaneland chased Sycamore while trying to prevent another Spartans trip to the free-throw line.

“It’s hard. It’s very hard to not be able to foul them,” Van Bogaert, a senior forward, said. “You’ve just got to count on your teammates at that point.”

Kaneland ultimately closed a 29-point gap from an earlier loss to the Spartans to seven, falling, 53-46, after being outscored, 18-7, in the fourth quarter.

The Knights knew that counted for something. That it wasn’t a Northern Illinois Big 12 East win especially stung.

“The lesson that we learned is we’ve got to finish off games,” Knights coach Ernie Colombe said, “but certainly we also kind of learned that we’re capable of playing with teams like that.”

Sycamore (20-2, 9-1 NI Big 12 East) trailed for much of the second half as Kaneland (13-7, 3-5) capitalized on fierce man-to-man defense and an attacking offense.

Seven weeks ago in Sycamore, the Spartans cruised past the Knights, 49-20.

On Tuesday, Kaneland surpassed its earlier output on Morgan Weber’s three-point play midway through the second quarter.

“I think we really did a good job of keeping our composure,” Spartans senior guard Bailey Gilbert said. “We were a young team a few years ago, but now it’s really nice to see us get over the hurdle and start to play smart and play as a team, and I think that’s what got us the win tonight.”

To ask Kaneland, a technical foul against Weber with 3:44 remaining took a considerable toll, too.

Gilbert had just hit a layup that tied the game at 42 when referees ruled a technical after Kaneland’s protest of a noncall on a physical play under the basket.

Colombe said he asked officials whether profanity had been used and was told no. Gilbert, who scored 12 of her gamehigh 24 points from the free-throw line, swished the next two foul shots for a 44-42 Spartans lead.

“It’s not an excuse. That’s just what happened,” Colombe said of the call.

“Both teams, I thought, played well. Two good teams playing very well tonight.”

Sycamore seized further control when Taiya Hopkins finished the bonus possession with a basket, ending a long stretch of Spartans passes and cuts.

“Instead of forcing up our first good shot, we waited for a great shot,” Sycamore coach Brett Goff said.

Lauren Goff (11 points) and Hopkins (10) joined Gilbert in double figures for the Spartans, who shot 38 percent from the field.

Kaneland shot 36 percent. Weber paced the Knights with 10 points, while Van Bogaert (nine) and Bailey Crimmins (seven) were next.

Both teams traded buzzer-beating 3s to end the first two quarters, with Sycamore finding Gilbert as the first eight minutes concluded before Weber nailed a long 3 before halftime, providing a 26-25 lead.

On either instance, Colombe and Brett Goff stalked the sideline, watching the other team’s crisp ball movement and barking “SHOOTER!” whenever the outside threat appeared to create even the slightest breathing room.

Turns out the Knights keyed on Lauren Goff while the Spartans monitored Weber’s younger sister, Jenni, who had

a crucial four-point play late in the third.

Although both teams executed the plan, the end results proved that taking anything for granted wasn’t a safe bet on this night.

Kaneland played its first three conference games over a weeklong stretch in December.

The Knights boasted an IC Catholic Prep Thanksgiving tournament title then, but players still were getting acclimated to their styles and the rotation. Vanessa Gould, Emily Grams and Morgan Weber weren’t in the lineup in the first Sycamore game.

A run of 10 wins in 13 games followed Kaneland’s early conference binge and coincided with a few Knights’ return to health. Colombe and players praised the energy and execution at practices and vowed to continue pushing for a smooth transfer on game nights.

The result notwithstanding, Tuesday was no different.

“I think this game helped us come together as a team,” Van Bogaert said. “We played together very well. A lot better than we have all year. Probably our best game. We didn’t win, but. …”

The trend continued Saturday when the Saints handed the host Vikings their first league loss, but it’s likely first-place Geneva won’t sweat things for too long. Games against struggling U-46 foes Streamwood, Larkin and Elgin are all that remain on the Vikings’ conference schedule.

Burlington Central braces for Broncos ... eventually Burlington Central girls basketball coach Mark Smith mentioned the Rockets’ 201415 rematch with Montini moments after the Broncos ended BC’s state title hopes in March.

Indeed, the same programs that dueled in a memorable, defense-first Class 3A state semifinal at Illinois State’s Redbird Arena in Normal will meet Saturday night in Lombard. But Smith still is challenging players to maintain focus on the here and now – namely Big Northern Conference East games against Johnsburg (Tuesday) and at Marengo (Thursday).

“We just want to make sure we don’t look ahead to Montini and take care of business in the conference games,” Smith said.

Barring any setbacks this week, BC could ostensibly start the same lineup that battled the Broncos in a 34-26 loss in Normal.

Guard Sam Cruz, out for much of the season with a broken hand, returned to the rotation earlier this month. Cruz, Sam Pryor, Alison Colby, Kayla Ross and Shelby Holt were on the floor to begin the semifinal.

“Having Sam Cruz back gives us a little more depth and some defensive stability, I guess,” Smith said. “She’s quite a sturdy defender.”

BC, which entered play Tuesday at 17-3 after a 28-6 finish last season, has long relied on its ‘D’ in Smith’s three seasons.

After the Montini game, Central finishes the regular season with four conference contests, including three at home.

“We’re playing well and we feel good to finish up January and get ready for that final push to the playoffs,” Smith said.

Melby, also a Warriors volleyball player, is slated for postseason surgery on the ring finger. In the meantime, she’s adapting to the tape while adjusting her offensive mechanics.

“It’s kind of in a way helping me,” she said. “Because I need to keep my guide hand more straight, so it’s helpful.”

Loberg, Krusz add to Butler’s local recruiting ties It’s not exactly surprising that the first person Matt Loberg saw when he showed up for his Butler football recruiting visit wore a Bulldog sweatshirt.

But this shirt wasn’t Butler navy.

Loberg, a Geneva senior defensive lineman, didn’t realize that his visit to Indianapolis on Martin Luther King Day would coincide with one for Matt Batavia senior Loberg offensive lineman Mitch Krusz, but there was Krusz as Loberg strolled into the meeting area to begin his visit.

“We weren’t the best of friends Mitch for the past four Krusz year by no means but that’s all part of the rivalry,” Loberg said. “Once we

got there we said that was [in the past] and we were looking forward to a bright future.”

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound Loberg announced his commitment to Butler on Monday night, about 48 hours after Krusz did the same.

Butler had plenty of Tri-Cities flavor on its roster in 2014 – including former star Batavia running back Anthony Scaccia, a freshman last season – and much more is on the way. The Division I, Football Championship Subdivision program might be able to justify setting up a satellite recruiting office in Kane County with its recent flurry of commitments (Krusz and Loberg follow St. Charles East offensive lineman Brennan Bosch).

Standout Geneva senior receiver/defensive back Pace Temple also has Butler on his recruiting radar.

“I’m not quite sure what he’s thinking right now,” Loberg said. “I know he has a

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab few options in mind. I’m hoping he goes to Butler, but it’s all his decision. We’ll see what he decides.”

Loberg said he and his family received encouraging feedback on the Bulldogs from former Geneva defensive back Sean Grady, who recently concluded his career at Butler and has returned to Geneva’s program as a lower-level coach.

Loberg’s younger sister, Grace, also was somewhat of a resource. Grace Loberg, a sophomore, already has her college decision out of the way, having committed to the Wisconsin women’s volleyball program.

“She didn’t want me going anywhere crazy and I didn’t want her going anywhere too far, either,” Loberg said. “ …

We’re very close. She’s a great sister, and we talk about stuff a lot.”

Loberg, who had nine sacks for the Class 7A quarterfinalist Vikings as a senior, also took recruiting visits to DePauw (Indiana) and Wisconsin-Platteville.

While Loberg will have to do some relationship-building with his former Batavia rivals, he’s already on great terms with an aunt and uncle who Loberg said live only a block from Butler’s campus in Indianapolis. Loberg said they’d been lobbying for Butler for quite a while.

“I stayed at their house the night before [the visit],” Loberg said. “They said they’d be at every game, so that was pretty awesome to have them there.”

Same school, different sport: St. Charles North baseball senior pitcher Sam Hubbe also is Butler-bound.

hander said Butler hit all three of his major criteria – a Division I program, not too far from home and a respected engineering program.

He said he reached out Tuesday to Butler pitching coach/recruiting coordinator Miles Miller and head coach Steve Farley to share his decision.

“They’re very terrific, very cool – they were very nice to me and my family,” Hubbe said.

Hubbe, who takes pride in his “12-6 curveball,” becomes the third, current Division-I recruit in North’s baseball program after fellow pitcher Cory Wright (Kansas State) and catcher Kyle Khoury (Morehead State) made previous decisions.

Knights’ AD to serve as interim coach

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland High School’s athletic director will serve as the school’s interim softball coach in the spring.

The Kaneland School District 302 Board on Monday approved the move, making Peter Goff the Knights’ softball coach for the upcoming season. The board voted 5-2 in favor of the move, with Tony Valente and Pedro Rivas voting no.

The position had been vacant since previous coach Brian Willis was removed from the role in the fall. Willis remains as a physical education and driver’s education teacher at the school.

After the move to remove Willis as coach, several players and parents showed up to support him. Despite that, Willis was not reinstated as coach.

Goff said he had eight years of softball coaching experience at Ashton-Franklin Center and Sterling. At Sterling, he was the head coach and had a three-year record of 63-47 and won regional championships in 2004 and 2005.

“I do have experience at it,”

Goff said, adding that, for one interim season, “it’ll be fine.”

Monday night’s board decision originally had been part of the consent agenda, items that would be approved without discussion.

Instead, it was moved to an executive session after the regular Peter meeting. When Goff board members ended their executive session, they announced the decision. Goff will receive a stipend amount of $7,896 for serving as interim softball coach.

Valente said he had “serious concerns” about having an athletic director serve as a head softball coach.

“He has duties that are going to go ignored,” Valente said, adding that “voting yes for this would hinder our programs.”

Valente said it was “not best practice to have an administrator to be a coach.”

“This is not something I’m supporting,” Valente said.

Goff said he would not com-

ment on Valente’s statement, but he said he knew of other athletic directors who have simultaneously served as coaches. He said he once served as a dean of students and also a head basketball coach.

“Nothing will miss a beat,” Goff said.

Teresa Witt, the board vice president, said she appreciated Goff “stepping up in a difficult circumstance.” She said it was possible the school might otherwise not have a softball coach.

Witt said the district had exhausted all other possibilities.

Gale Pavlak, the board secretary, added that it was “important that the girls are allowed to have their season, and we need to go forward.”

The Knights will enter the spring with high expectations as several returners are projected to supply leadership for a team that won 20 games last season.

Goff said there will be varsity, sophomore and freshman teams, and there will be some junior varsity games as well.

“There was always going to be a season,” Goff said.

ELGIN – Geneva boys basketball coach Phil Ralston trusted his bench guys to finish off Elgin.

Ralston’s faith ultimately was rewarded, although not without a few nervous moments as Geneva took Tuesday’s Upstate Eight Conference River matchup, 72-53.

The Vikings led big, 57-34, entering the fourth quarter, but the Maroons made major headway during the fourth quarter, closing within 62-52 at the 2:51 mark.

Rather than re-insert his regulars, Ralston watched his reserves steady themselves.

Jordan Vedder made a pair of free throws to put the Vikings up 12, and a Jack Dreyer 3-pointer with 1:17 to go removed any remaining doubt as the Vikings (18-2, 7-1 UEC River) won their ninth straight game.

“I just got done telling them, I said the perfect game for me is not about our margin of victory,” Ralston said. “It’s did we win, did we play well and then were we able to get everyone

on our team into the game, and maybe with an opportunity to score. We had that tonight.

“Was I happy how we were early in the fourth quarter? No. That’s why I called the timeout, wanted to get our guys settled down, get focused, have them regroup, and then I think it’s important for those guys to have closed out that game.”

Geneva, the conference’s biggest team facing arguably the smallest in Elgin, unsurprisingly pounded the Maroons on the glass.

Geneva’s 18-5 lead after the first quarter had plenty to do with a 16-3 rebounding advantage and the simple put-backs it enabled.

The Vikings’ biggest post players – Chandler Fuzak, Loudon Vollbrecht and Mike Landi – powered the visitors early. Fuzak, a 6-foot-10 senior, went 5 for 6 from the floor and had 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.

“It felt good,” Fuzak said. “It came from crashing the boards and getting some quick, early buckets, and then my team just started looking for me more.”

Here’s an edited transcript of his conversation with Chronicle sports reporter Kevin Druley:

that I wanted to get this competition. … I’ve just been talking with [Saints coach Jason] Potter a lot, about how to go through it, but I just wanted to go after it.

Is a 10-pound difference in your opponent pretty noticeable or subtle?

I definitely felt the size difference a little bit, but I think it helped me a little bit, because I didn’t have to worry about digesting food, you know. I didn’t have to suck down stuff. I was kind of used to it and felt real quick.

Have you determined which class you’ll compete in for You’re getting used to this state series? drill with Keone, right?

No. Not yet. Either 160 or 170.

Yeah. We’ve both been on three What were you able to do of these teams. It’s been nice. when you were injured in the You’re certified at 160, but early season? what made you decide to It was a thumb injury [from bump up to 170? football]. I was running and doing I bumped up because I knew leg drills, just staying in shape.

PHOENIX – Rob Ninkovich has made the journey from high school football star to NFL journeyman, and after being cut three times and suffering a serious knee injury, he has become one of the MVPs of the New England Patriots defense.

At heart, however, he is still just a South Side Chicago guy.

Ninkovich was born in Blue Island, and his family moved to New Lenox when he was in seventh grade.

“When I first moved there, five minutes one way was a lot of cornfield, and then the other way it’s pretty populated,” he said during Super Bowl Media day. “It’s kind of right on the edge of being in the middle of nowhere and being in the suburbs. It’s grown a lot since I’ve been there.”

Ninkovich wants none of the star routine when he comes home to visit. “I like to just be a normal guy. They don’t treat me any different than they did when I was roaming around the neighborhood and playing basketball in my front yard.”

But when it comes to Rudy’s Gym in Shorewood, Ninkovich is a superstar.

Rudy’s has been owned and run by Francis “Rudy” Ruettiger for more than 35 years, and if you haven’t put two and two together yet, his brother Daniel is the “Rudy” of Notre Dame and Hollywood fame.

And this “Rudy” claims Ninkovich as one of his star pupils.

That’s what Ninkovich did, to become a star at Purdue and get drafted in the fifth round by the Saints, and to overcome the knee injury that almost cost him his pro football life.

“Yeah, it’s an unbelievably special place that’s played a big part in my career,” he said.

“At first, I went there just to work as hard as I could just to be able to play this game, and then it’s been huge for me rehabbing after the injury and all the other things I’ve gone through.

I asked Ninkovich if he ever sees any of Rudy’s stories in his own struggles to get where he is today. “Yeah there’s no question I see a little bit of those guys (Francis and Daniel) in my story.

“I still love the movie. I’m not going to lie. I watched it last week before the game just to get me going. I’ve been watching that movie since I was a kid.”

To hear the self-effacing star tell his own story isn’t as dramatic as the movie, but ... “I didn’t have too many offers when I came out of high school, so I had to go to the junior college route,” he said.

“That was a challenge. Going to Purdue, Anthony Spencer and Ray Edwards were already starting there, so I had to kind of jump in that group of talented football players.

Then getting into the league, I had to overcome being cut, a couple of injuries and just keep fighting.”

There is no question anymore that Ninkovich has arrived. On Sunday, he’ll celebrate his 31st birthday by playing in Super Bowl XLIX, and every “Rudy” in Chicago will be pulling for him.

Heart attack recovery time keeps getting shorter Dear Doctor K: I am 59 years old. I recently came home after being hospitalized for five days for a mild heart attack. I feel great – but my doctor says he doesn’t want me to go back to work for another six weeks, even though my job mostly involves sitting at my desk. I like to stay busy and feel ready to return to the office.

Please advise.

Dear Reader: The treatment of heart attacks has come a long way in the past 30 years. Doctors can now open blocked coronary arteries with angioplasty balloons and stents or “clot-busting” drugs.

We can use stress tests and echocardiograms to classify patients as low-, intermediate- or highrisk when they are discharged from the hospital. And patients go home with medications that reduce the likelihood of another heart attack.

With today’s treatments, people leave the hospital much sooner. Only a couple of decades ago, the typical heart attack patient spent weeks in the hospital, much of it on strict bed rest.

In most hospitals today, patients who have a heart attack without additional complications are out of bed in a day. They’re walking in a day or two, on a

But, as in your case, many patients are advised to stay away from work for four to six weeks.

That’s a big improvement from the eight- to 12-week prohibitions of the past. But is it really necessary?

To find out, doctors in Australia randomly assigned 142 patients to return to normal activities, including work, either two or six weeks after their heart attacks.

All the patients had been classified as low risk before leaving the hospital, and all received standard medical care, as you did.

Over the next six months, the patients did well. The patients who returned to work earlier did not have a greater number of heart problems – repeat heart attacks, heart failure or deaths.

So this one study suggests that people at low risk after a heart attack may be able to return to work sooner than six weeks.

While training in internal

medicine, I cared for a patient with a heart attack. His cardiologist had ordered that he lie flat all the time, even to pass his urine or have a bowel movement. After five days, he told me this was driving him crazy. He asked if he could just sit up and dangle his legs off the side of the bed, and I agreed. Nothing bad happened – to him.

However, when the cardiologist found out, he hit the ceiling.

To make matters worse, he was one of the most famous and accomplished cardiologists of the 20th century – and I was not.

But on this matter, many studies since then have shown that he was wrong.

My take-home lessons from this experience: In the absence of evidence, the judgment of even the finest doctors can be wrong.

There is no substitute for actually studying what is the best way to treat a medical problem. So ask your doctor if he would reconsider his advice about when to return to work.

Finding a loving mother Dr. Wallace: I’m not a teenager. I’m a 41-yearold mother and I’m addressing this email to all the parents who read your column. I was the mother of a wonderful, intelligent and beautiful young daughter who was suddenly taken from me on a snowy winter night two years ago. She died instantly when another car skidded on the icy road and hit her car head-on.

I have accepted the fact that it was an unavoidable accident. It was determined that no speeding, drugs, nor alcohol were involved and she had been wearing her seatbelt.

What I am now feeling is the thought that maybe I could have been a better parent. She brought home outstanding grades, and I usually said something like, “How come you got a B+ in math?” instead of, “I’m really proud of you for getting five As and a B+! That’s a super report card!”

She always did her chores, but I was usually too busy to tell her, “Thanks for helping,” or, “Good job in the kitchen!” When she saved her babysitting money and bought me a very special Christmas gift, I thanked her, but I should have thrown my arms around her and said: “Thank you for such a lovely gift, and you earned the money yourself! I’ll treasure this vase forever!” And I do, but I now shed a tear whenever I think about how I gave only a simple thank you.

She asked for a puppy for her birthday, but I told her pets were a lot of trouble to care for. I now wish I had said, “OK, I know you’ll love and care for your pet.”

I remember when she asked to borrow my

You can only imagine the way I feel now. I should have said, “Enjoy the sweater because everything I own is also yours and I love you.”

Then on the last day of her life, she said, “I’ll see you later, Mom,” and my last words to her were, “Drive carefully, but don’t be too late or you’ll be in big trouble.”

I should have told her that I loved her with all my heart and soul and that she was the main reason for my happiness.

Oh, if only I could turn back the hands of time! I can’t do that, but all the parents of children who are reading this do have that precious time.

Parents: Always treat your children with respect, kindness and love, and guide them with wisdom so they can mature into wonderful adults.

Also remember that if a defender leads a suit that has never been played, even in the middle of the deal, choosing a low card from length guarantees at least one honor in that suit and announces a desire to try to win tricks in that suit.

Given that intro, how should the defenders card to defeat three no-trump after West has led the spade five?

As mentioned yesterday, don’t play in two no-trump with a long suit opposite some fit. Either get into the suit at the three-level (if possible) or go for three no-trump.

Exactly as in yesterday’s deal, South takes East’s spade 10 with his king and plays a club, putting West back in.

West knows that South started with the top three spades and that, despite declarer’s bid, the defenders must try to collect four diamond tricks. At trick three, West must shift to the diamond two, his fourth-highest card showing interest in cashing tricks in this suit. Then East should win with his ace and lead back the diamond 10, the higher of two remaining cards. As you can see, that works perfectly.

If West had wanted East to return to spades, he would have led a high diamond, not his lowest.
