Bingo rules at Lions Club party Clubs throughout the region take part in Ski for Sight event

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – After hearing “N-42” called out during a bingo session Sunday at the Elburn Lions Club, Sheila Vleck pressed her fingers down a row on her special plastic Braille game card. When she reached the final number on the row, she recognized it as 42 and placed a bingo chip on top.

Bingo in Elburn was one of the final stops of a weekend-long festival called Ski for Sight, in which participants enjoyed a party in Sycamore on Friday night, outdoor activities in Shabbona on Saturday, a banquet and dancing in DeKalb on Saturday night, and then a choice of bowling in Sycamore or bingo in Elburn on Sunday. Elburn then hosted a lunch to close the event.

It was the 32nd year the event had taken place. In Elburn, Chris Halsey, the first vice district governor for Elburn’s region, called out numbers for game after game as participants played on their special cards, with help from the young members of the Elburn Leo and Junior Leo clubs. Vleck sat at a table near the back, helped by Junior Leo member Aubrey Broz, who did everything from serving drinks to pointing out numbers to taking out Vleck’s service dog, Rhea, for a walk when it was needed.

Vleck said she enjoyed playing bingo at the event each year – something she has done for 15 years – but she said she could not enjoy playing bingo on a regular basis.

“I couldn’t do this,” she said, smiling. “I couldn’t take the pressure. I do this for fun.”

Some at the event showed emotion when they won. Andre Williams, who won the first game, was clapping and celebrating with Elburn Leo Club member Zach Strayve.

Others enthusiastically shouted out “bingo” when they won, and then collected a small cash prize.

Carolynn Werline, from the DeKalb Lions Evening Club, said she has heard that Ski for Sight is the highlight of the year for many participants.

Werline said it was a good weekend for the event, since

there was plenty of snow.

“This is good weather,” she said. “There are weekends when we should have called it ‘Hike for Sight.’ ” Cheryl Lee, of the Elburn Lions Club, said she has been helping to run the Elburn stage of Ski for Sight for about nine years. She praised the involvement of the younger members, saying it was “a good thing for them” to help

Students show off knowledge at ‘Disaster Blaster’

By CHARLES MENCHACA editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – About 75 students and their parents gathered at Fermilab on Saturday to show off miniature versions of some epic events.

The students, ages 6 through 9, formed 15 teams to participate in the second annual Batavia Junior First Lego League Open House.

For the 2013-14 theme of “Disaster Blaster,” teams explored natural disasters and used Legos and motorized parts to display the effects that a disaster can have on communities.

resonated further with the students when one of their weekly meetings was canceled in October because of inclement weather, said Dee Karabowicz, open house organizer and operator of the first- through thirdgrade divisions of Fox Valley Robotics.

“I think disasters really thrill people – learning about them is very interesting,” Karabowicz said. “This topic … is a real-world topic for them.”

Each team was allowed one disaster to focus on and whether team members wanted to portray it before, during or after its presence in a community. Most students, such as Nathan Kilmer, 9, chose to portray

a natural disaster in the act.

Kilmer, a third-grader at Heartland Elementary School in Geneva, explained for his Mass Destruction team how they used one motor to move a tornado made of black Legos toward a house and another motor to move the house off its foundation to represent the tornado’s force.

Kilmer liked this year’s theme better than last year because he said it involved more mechanics.

“I like how we always work together and always make something that’s pretty good,” Kilmer said.

His team’s model, poster board and presentation were

the result of about 32 hours of teamwork Sundays from September to this month. The Masters of Disasters team worked a similar schedule to complete their volcano.

The Masters team used bright red Lego pieces to represent the melted liquid rock known as magma. Then magma is called lava when it rises to the surface, said Hannah Kraus, 8, a second-grader at Munhall Elementary School in St. Charles.

While some of her teammates were undecided about another year in junior robotics, Kraus plans to continue participating.

angerously cold temperatures Monday shuttered schools across the area, and blowing and drifting snow caused whiteout conditions in western Kane County.

Blowing and drifting snow Sunday night into Monday caused dangerous driving conditions.

Winds on Sunday night were clocked as high as 54 mph at Aurora Airport in Sugar Grove, and gusts were around 30 mph Monday.

Kane County remains stuck in a deep freeze. The arctic temperatures will hang around again today, with a wind chill warning in effect until 9 a.m. Wednesday.

The conditions made for a difficult day for the Kane County Sheriff’s Department.

“We were just trying to get cars that were abandoned out of the way so plows could get through,” said Lt. Pat Gengler, the Kane County Sheriff’s Department spokesman. “With the blowing and drifting snow, the plows are having a hard time keeping up. We have some areas with

Schools previously were canceled during an arctic blast earlier this month. All Kane County forest preserves and facilities will remain closed today because of the extreme weather conditions.

District nature programs have been canceled. Gates will remain locked at all preserves to keep both the public and staff safe in the sub-zero temperatures and double-digit wind chills.

are going through more salt this winter compared to previous winters. “Since October, we have used 2,500 tons of salt,” said Kevin Stahr, Geneva’s communications coordinator. “On the average, we use about 2,000 tons of salt.”

But this hasn’t been an average winter.

Through Jan. 26, the area has seen about 33 inches of snow, making it the third-snowiest January on record and the fourth-snowiest month ever, according to the National Weather Service.

The city of Geneva has 1,000 tons of salt left and can always order more, Stahr said.

“We’re still going to provide plowing services and keep our residents safe,” he said. “That is of upmost importance.”

Wednesday, as temperatures are forecast to rise to the high teens.

This winter has been unusually cold – from Dec. 1 through Jan. 25, the average temperature has been 20.3 degrees, making it the 13th-coldest winter dating to 1872, according to the National Weather Service.

Those who must spend any time outdoors are being urged to wear layers of warm, dry clothing and to cover exposed skin as protection from frostbite. Delnor Hospital’s emergency department Monday didn’t treat any patients for weather-related issues such as frostbite, hospital spokesman Chris King said.

Despite the frigid temperatures, there hasn’t been much of an increase in people using the services of the Lazarus House homeless shelter in downtown St. Charles, which is a designated warming shelter.

“Over the past week or two, the number of people here have increased a slight amount,” Lazarus House Executive Director Liz Eakins said. “But nobody has taken advantage of Lazarus House as a warming shelter. This tells us there are enough smart people that are not wandering the streets in this weather.”

The weather has not changed the homeless shelter’s operations, she said.

“We are open 24/7, regardless of the weather,” Eakins said. “For us, it’s business as usual.”

Public works departments are trying to keep the roads safe for motorists, even as the arctic temperatures present a new challenge.

“Our salt is pre-treated prior to application to help it be more effective in the colder temperatures,” St. Charles Public Services Manager Chris Adesso said. “We also have had staff working continually the past few days addressing blowing and drifting snow.”

Police: Chicago man charged in robbery

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – A 27-year-old Chicago man remains in jail on a $300,000 bail after being charged with armed robbery Saturday at the Batavia Pantry, 929 E. Wilson St. Antwann L. Hunt, 27, has a listed address of the 1300 block of South Spaulding Avenue in Chicago, but police said he was staying at the Batavia Apartments in the 1100 block of East Wilson Street, Batavia.

Hunt has been charged with Antwann L. armed robbery, Hunt aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and resisting a police officer and causing injury.

A knife and more than $300 in cash were found where Hunt had been captured, Batavia Police Detective Kevin Bretz said.

The robbery took place at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the store, Bretz said.

A clerk suffered minor injuries after a brief struggle with Hunt, who had a knife.

The clerk was treated and re-

leased at the scene.

“You don’t want to put up a fight with anybody that is armed,” Bretz said. “Money can be replaced.”

Hunt also was injured during the struggle with the clerk. He was treated at an area hospital for minor injuries to his nose and hands. In addition, a Batavia police officer was injured during a foot pursuit that took place after the robbery. The police officer was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.

“He had received a lower-body injury that was non-life-threatening,” Bretz said.

Hunt also was charged with causing a child to be endangered, a misdemeanor.

Police said Hunt left three children, ages 6, 4 and 1, alone in an apartment while the incident took place.

This is the second robbery at Batavia Pantry in as many months. In December, offenders took a laptop computer from the store and about 200 cartons of cigarettes.

Bretz said the two robberies are not related. Last month’s incident was not an armed robbery.

Trial in fatal crash to start

By ANDREA AZZO aazzo@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The families of Tim Getzelman and Alexis Weber try to honor the memories of the 21-year-olds who died in a car crash almost three years ago in positive ways.

On the first anniversary, they hosted a blood drive. Last year, they encouraged friends and community members to do something nice for someone else through a Random Act of Kindness day.

They plan to repeat the Random Act of Kindness Day – T-shirts for the event were sold to benefit Casey’s Safe Haven in Elburn, a rescue for dogs and horses – but first they have to sit through the first part of a criminal trial for the 48-year-old Sycamore woman who was driving the pickup truck that collided with Getzelman’s four-door sedan.

“This is really going to be incredibly painful and difficult for both our families, as well as for friends and community,” Tamara Getzelman, Tim’s mother, said in a written statement. “It has been a long process that has now taken us to a trial … finally … it will be now three years on Feb. 21.”

Patricia Schmidt, of the 28500 block of Brickville Road, will stand trial before DeKalb County Presiding Judge Robbin Stuckert on charges of reckless homicide and aggravated reckless driving. She asked that Stuckert, rather than jurors, decide her fate.

Schmidt has been free since posting $50,000 bail April 6, 2011.

The trial, originally expected to start Monday, was pushed back to today because

weather concerns closed the DeKalb County Courthouse on Monday. The trial will pick up again March 3 through 5.

About 5:30 p.m. Feb. 21, 2011, Schmidt was driving south on North Main Street in Sycamore when she collided with Getzelman’s vehicle, which was traveling east on Peace Road.

Schmidt’s attorney, Gregg Smith, did not respond to calls and emails requesting comment, but Assistant State’s Attorney Phil Montgomery said Schmidt had a pre-existing seizure condition.

Prosecutors have said evidence suggests that Schmidt suffered a seizure or blackout in the crash and that they plan to argue that her medications were never at an appropriate level to drive. Stuckert agreed with prosecutors Nov. 15 that Schmidt’s medical condition wasn’t an affirmative defense, meaning it did not relieve her of responsibility for her actions, if she did commit reckless homicide or aggravated reckless driving.

“It’s our position she shouldn’t have been driving a car as a result of her medical condition,” Montgomery said.

If convicted of reckless homicide, the more serious charge, Schmidt could be sentenced to probation or up to 5 years in prison. She had been charged with aggravated driving under the influence, which is punishable by between 6 and 28 years in prison, but prosecutors dropped those charges Sept. 4 because they did not think they could prove them beyond a reasonable doubt.

Prosecutors dropped the aggravated DUI charges because the prescription drugs found in Schmidt’s blood did not exceed the prescribed

doses, DeKalb County State’s Attorney Richard Schmack said last week in a letter to the Daily Chronicle. Under his predecessor, former State’s Attorney Clay Campbell, prosecutors “consulted three independent labs and found no qualified expert would testify that Schmidt was under the influence,” Schmack wrote.

“To [pursue the DUI counts] would have totally undermined the state’s credibility in pursuing a conviction based on reckless conduct, rather than impairment,” Schmack said.

Montgomery said the state will call witnesses of the crash, medical personnel and police officers to testify during the trial.

Meanwhile, Getzelman’s and Weber’s families aren’t the only ones who remember the couple. Getzelman was seven months away from earning his associate degree to become a firefighter, and Weber, a Kaneland graduate, who wanted to become a teacher, supported Feed ‘Em Soup, a nonprofit organization that has a children’s section called Lexi’s Corner in her honor.

They were outstanding citizens who each wanted a career dedicated to giving back, said Sycamore Assistant Fire Chief Marc Doty, who knew both victims.

“That was their dream,” Doty said. “That says a lot about those two. Not everybody is willing to do that.”

Getzelman, a Sycamore graduate, was hired as an intern to the Sycamore Fire Department on Sept. 15, 2008, and had a license for basic EMT. A memorial site was dedicated to the couple July 15, 2012, at Sycamore Fire Station No. 2, 2100 Frantum Road, Sycamore.

DOWNS, Kan. – Thomas George Moulding, 68, of Downs, Kan., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kan. He was born April 14, 1945, in Geneva, the son of George and Audrey (Millett) Moulding.

He served in the United States Marine Corps from September 1962 until March 1966. He graduated from Batavia High School in 1963. Thom worked as a lineman for Kansas City Power and Light for nine years and was a highway inspector for the State of Kansas for 25 years. He was united in marriage to Dixie Carl on April 14, 2001.

Thom was a member of the Horton VFW and American Legion and also the Marine Corps League Mount Suribachi Detachment.

He is survived by his wife, Dixie; son, Lincoln T. Moulding of Downs; daughter, Karma (David) Fisher of Trenton, Mo.; three stepdaughters; a stepson; three grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; four sisters, Judith (Gary) Sutphin, Anita (Roy) Karp of North Aurora, Sylvia (Larry) Chiplis of Batavia and Mary (Tim) Morrow of Aurora; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Adopted in 2006, the existing board policy states teachers may give homework to aid in students’ educational development and should not be assigned for disciplinary purposes. Additionally, it asserts that class time should not be used primarily for homework completion.

McConnell’s policy also stated homework is to be graded – with grades added to the student record – and returned so students can see what they have learned and still need to learn.

Turriff said teachers disagree that homework should be graded.

“Homework is a time to

make mistakes,” she said.

Parent and teacher Jenny Santos said feedback on homework isn’t always helpful. Stickers and grades don’t help students understand their learning targets, she said.

Board President Steve Spurling described the policy as “too much micromanagement.”

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 continued to receive a passing grade from parents in its annual survey conducted last month.

Mark Pomplun, the district’s executive director of assessment and accountability, presented highlights of the results to the school board’s Community Relations Committee on Monday.

Nearly 2,400 parents – along with about 950 employees and 9,700 students – participated in the survey, which is done to support school improvement.

On average, parents gave teachers, their children’s school, curriculum and buildings high marks, as each category scored above a 4.0 on a 5.0-point scale.

The Board of Education, however, ranked the lowest of seven “graded” categories, falling into the C to B range. It earned a 3.76, down from 3.87 the previous year.

Board members acknowledged the grade later in the meeting when considering a request from St. Charles Education Association President Pam Turriff.

Turriff asked that board members “adopt” specific schools, meaning they would occasionally visit, attend events and tour buildings.

“We are proud of what we do as teachers,” Turriff said.

To cover the district’s 17 schools, board President Steve Spurling said it would require the seven board members to take on multiple schools.

“We’re spread pretty thin as it is,” he said.

Corinne Pierog acknowledged an increased board member presence could boost public perception about the board and suggested members visit schools and attend events voluntarily.

“It’s a commitment that we make to each other,” she said.

Other board members agreed and noted they could share their experiences during board meetings.

In presenting her proposal during the Policy Committee meeting, Judith McConnell emphasized the importance of homework, describing it as an “uncostly way” of improving student learning.

Her policy calls for homework to be assigned regularly and appropriately and states that it should not be done in class.

“We’re foolish to ignore this opportunity to increase the learning time our children have,” McConnell said.

North Aurora to crack down on drunken drivers KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – The North Aurora Police Department on Monday announced it will conduct special patrols this Super Bowl weekend cracking down on drunken drivers and seat-belt law violators.

“We are reminding everyone that if you choose to drink and drive in North Aurora this weekend, you will be arrested,” North Aurora Police Chief David Summer said in a news release. “If you plan on drinking alco-

hol while cheering on your team, pass your keys to a sober driver before the Super Bowl party begins. Motorists also can anticipate tickets for ignoring the seat-belt laws.”

Designating a sober driver and not letting friends drive drunk are just two of several steps to help avoid a tragic crash or an arrest resulting from drunken driving, Summer said. Other tips include: • Call a taxi, use mass transit or call a sober friend or family member to get you home safely • Use your community’s

designated driver program.

• Report drunken drivers to law enforcement.

• Spend the night where the activity is being held.

• Always buckle up.

“We will show zero tolerance for [drunken] drivers,” Summer said.

“So remember, designate a sober driver before the party begins.”

IMSA taking applications for college prep program AURORA – The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy is taking applications from Illinois ninth-grade students passionate about math and science for consideration to its three year (grades 10 to 12) advanced college preparatory program.

Admission to IMSA’s teaching and learning laboratory is competitive, with about 250 students invited to live on campus out of about 750 applicants.

IMSA is a state agency and tuition and most room and board expenses are provided by state funds.

No student is ever refused because of inability to pay.

Aldermen hire firm to upgrade treatment plant

The company, CDM Smith, will do a facility plan update to evaluate the aeration system and identify improvements; evaluate phosphorus removal alternatives; and evaluate capacity improvements for

the wastewater treatment plant, officials said.

Superintendent of Water and Wastewater Bob VanGyseghem said the additional services are needed so the city will comply with new phosphorus limits set for the city and other Fox River communities, as determined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under the Clean Water Act. The city’s new national pollutant discharge elimination system Permit requires this, he said, because

“As the years have gone by, we’ve made less money from our concerts and other events,” said Vogelsberg, a former 3rd Ward alderman in Geneva. “We’ve made more [money] with Sub 5 Century cycling events. This is perfect, to pass off the reins to Davis Phinney.”

The Paul Ruby Foundation began raising money in

2007 with its annual concerts for a cure and other events, and it has donated more than $750,000, Vogelsberg said.

Vogelsberg said by the end of this year, the local charity should hit the $1 million mark in donating to ongoing Parkinson’s research at Northwestern University.

GENEVA – A 63-year-old Rutland Township woman was injured Saturday in Geneva when she was struck by a car and knocked 8 to 10 feet east of the crosswalk while crossing the street at the corner of North First and West State streets, police said.

Bonnie L. Pollworth, of the 14N600 block of Timber Ridge Drive near Elgin, was hit when she crossed West State Street in the crosswalk from south to north shortly before 10 a.m. Saturday, according to a crash report.

Pollworth was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva with a laceration to the back of her head, left shoulder and leg and lower back pain, according to the crash report. She remained hospitalized Monday, according to the hospital.

The driver of a 2010 Mazda 3, Megan K. Cardile, 26, of the 1000 block of North Bennett Street, was making a left turn from North First Street to continue east onto West State Street, when Pollworth was walking across the street, according to the crash report.

Pollworth told police she thought the driver saw her and was slowing down so she could cross the street, according to the report. However, as Cardile continued to turn left, her car struck Pollworth as Pollworth still was in the crosswalk.

Police issued Cardile a warning notice for failure to yield to a pedestrian.

A potential plan to fight poverty in U.S. THE WASHINGTON POST A higher federal minimum wage is a key plank of President Barack Obama’s anti-inequality platform, and he is likely to repeat that popular proposal in his State of the Union address. Phasing in a raise from $7.25 a hour, the current level, to $10.10, as Obama suggests, would help many hard-pressed, low-income Americans.

But it’s easy to overstate the impact. First, there’s the risk a higher minimum would reduce employment in some lowwage industries, albeit marginally. Second, a federal increase would be partially redundant in the 21 states and the District of Columbia where the minimum is already higher than $7.25; these jurisdictions account for more than half of the nation’s population. The largest state, California, will have a $10 minimum by Jan. 1, 2016. Third, 80 percent of the beneficiaries would not be poor, according to a recent report by Isabel Sawhill and Quentin Karpilow of the Brookings Institution. Indeed, 30 percent of them live in households earning above $60,000.

If Obama and Congress want to maximize the benefits to struggling working people, they’ll pair action on the minimum wage with reforms to the government’s largest benefit program targeting the working poor – the Earned

Income Tax Credit. The EITC provides an annual wage supplement to workers based on their earnings, their marital status and how many children they have. Over the years, it has proven highly successful at boosting work effort and reducing poverty. But it remains incomplete; the most salient defect is the EITC’s treatment of single, childless workers, who remain eligible for at most $487 a year. By contrast, the maximum benefit for a family with three children is just more than $6,000 a year.

It won’t be cheap to boost the EITC, whose total cost at present is over $60 billion a year. But, as Sawhill and Karpilow pointed out, a higher minimum wage would save the government money because of recipients’ reduced need for federal benefits, and some of those savings could be applied to the EITC. They also argue for better targeting of the EITC by nearly quadrupling the maximum benefit to single, childless workers and by shifting resources to workers with younger families as opposed to those with more, older children. The boost to young singles would come at the slight expense of those over 39.

They also would eliminate marriage penalties in the current law. Overall, the Sawhill-Karpilow proposal would reduce the poverty rate by 1.1 percentage points without any additional cost to the government.

In the letter, Mr Hultgren, like so many Republicans these days, used the occasion to attack the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare.

A little history about the ACA may surprise, as well as enlighten.

Initially, it was Republican President Richard Nixon, who back in the 1970s, put forth the idea that eventually led to the ACA. Later, the Heritage Foundation, a Conservative think tank, promoted a plan

that would require all American families to buy health insurance from private insurance companies, the so-called “individual mandate,” to which modern-day Republicans so strenuously object. More recently, Republican Mitt Romney put the Heritage Foundation plan, including the individual mandate, into law in Massachusetts, apparently with great success.

When Mr. Hultgren and Republicans attack the ACA, they are attacking the only plan that Republicans/conservatives have ever promoted to make health care accessible and affordable to all Americans. So, if they are against universal health care, against a

public option and against their own health care plan – which retains the role of private insurance companies – what are they for?

Based on their rhetoric and their actions, it seems like they just don’t give a hoot about making health care accessible and affordable to all Americans, especially the roughly 50 million who were uninsured and the millions more who were underinsured and now have a chance for coverage under the ACA. It’s far from perfect, but it’s a lot better than nothing, which is what Republicans are proposing.

A CREATIVE APPROACH North Stars’ fundraiser aims to uplift weights facility

ob Pomazak’s extensive strength and conditioning background was one of his chief selling points when St. Charles North hired him last year as the school’s new football coach.

Now, Pomazak plans to put his stamp on the school’s weight room with a creative fundraiser.

On Saturday, Pomazak is helping oversee the school’s “1st Annual Pennies 4 Pounds Lift-A-Thon,” in which dozens of North student-athletes will record lifts in the bench press, squat and power clean, with per-pound pledges helping raise money for what Pomazak envisions as substantial upgrades to North’s weight room.

“When I got here in February, we came in and kind of took a look at the facility itself, and it’s a great space, there’s plenty of room, we’ve got these high ceilings – but really looking at one of the major needs we had is probably getting more racks,” Pomazak said. “When people see racks, they think of straight power lifting, but in today’s day and age of strength and conditioning, racks can be used as self-contained areas for athletes to train. You can do a lot of station work at them.”

Pomazak emphasized the fundraiser is designed to benefit all North students and athletes, not only the football program. Creating a more versatile and inclusive weight room is a central part of Pomazak’s goal in the coming years.

“A lot of our training was done in the hallways,” said Pomazak, who was strength and conditioning coordinator at Elk Grove and also holds those duties at North. “Kind of what we’re looking to do is make this a one-stop shop where you feel like you can have your whole program in here, and you can get

At least 60 North student-athletes are expected to participate in the Lift-AThon, representing several different sports.

North football junior running back Nick Edlund likes the creative approach the school is taking with the fundraiser.

“It’s definitely a lot more interesting, a lot more kind of motivating than just going door-to-door and just selling raffle tickets or something like that,” Edlund said. “You pretty much reel in how much money you lift that day. It’s an interesting twist to it and I think it motivates a lot more kids to try and challenge themselves to go and raise money for a good, winning program.”

North’s boosters organization is helping orchestrate the event. Boosters president Tom Mullally said an event

“Being that it’s our inaugural, we’re certainly doing everything we can to shed as much light onto it as possible because I think if it’s suc-

cessful this year, it gives us a great foundation to build on it year over year,” Mullally said.

Batavia revamped its weight-training facility a few years ago, and the Bulldogs’ football program – coincidentally or not – has enjoyed a historically successful run since, including the school’s first football state championship last season.

Referring to Batavia, Pomazak cited a “direct correlation between their physical strength and their emotional investment in their team.” North has missed the playoffs four straight seasons, going 5-4 in Pomazak’s debut in 2013.

“I think that type of team-building is something that you just can’t replicate,” Pomazak said. “I really think if you get that in place and you get the equipment in place and kids start to buy into that atmosphere of this is the place where you do win championships, I think you’re only going to get more kids out for your program, I think you’re going to have stronger kids who are coming out and I think more committed kids.”

“There are going to be guys that are in there that are much bigger backs in the power game and I’m probably going to be more for zone [plays] and other types of things to get me in open space,” Scaccia said.

Remaining a Bulldog at Butler – a Division I, nonscholarship Football Championship Subdivision program – is a plus for Scaccia.

“Still going to have a ‘Dog Pound’ there, so that’s cool,” said Scaccia, who plans to study human movement and health sciences. “Unfortunately I’m going to have to wear blue and white, but it’ll be good.”

Butler plays in the Pioneer Football League, which also houses Drake, another of the finalists for Scaccia’s services.

On Sunday, Scaccia became the second Class of 2014 Batavia player to make a college commitment after Anthony Thielk earlier

chose Minnesota State, and Monday, Zwart and Millette became the third and fourth, each selecting Whitewater.

Whitewater has won the D-III national title four of the past five seasons, and Zwart could see why on his visit last weekend.

“Mostly their facilities compare to a small D-I school,” Zwart said. “If you look at their school and all the football stuff you have there, you would be surprised it’s a D-III school.”

The 6-3, 190-pound Zwart caught 37 passes for 698 receiving yards and five touchdowns as a senior.

He said he might room at Whitewater with fellow Batavia receiver Rourke Mullins, who also plans to attend the school.

Zwart’s pool of potential roommates with B-Town ties expanded Monday night when Millette also chose Whitewater.

Millette had 17 tackles for a loss among his 54 total and also had 7½ sacks.

Cultivating more depth is the biggest objective entering the season’s final month.

“Just focus on the small things that we’ve been thinking about all season. The small things that you work on to set your goals,” Burke said. “Turns, starts – all the things that are going to make the difference.”

Naturally, those things get repetitious, but with tapering soon to be on the Cadets’ mind, they can refuel and go from there.

“I think we’re a lot faster than people think we are and our relays are a lot better than people think they are,” Fergus said. “We’re really an underrated team.”

Concession craziness: If there’s one thing that can uproot a rowdy student section in the heat of a possession-for-possession basketball game, it’s this: Free hot dogs and pizza slices.

Such was life as the nightcap of the Geneva-Glenbard North girls/boys doubleheader wound down Jan. 21. Geneva public address announcer Jason Santo trumpeted the good news midway through the fourth quarter, sending a number of students scattering from their seats.

Most only missed about 45 seconds of clock time, as Glenbard North called a timeout shortly thereafter.

Things only got better when the Vikings closed out the Panthers, 55-53, on a pair of Nate Navigato free throws in the final seconds.

Wisconsin-Whitewater netted a pair of recent commitments from the Batavia football program, and nearly landed a third.

While Batavia all-state running back Anthony Scaccia chose Butler over UW-Whitewater and others Sunday, two of Scaccia’s Batavia classmates – r e c e i v e r Anthony Jordan Zwart Scaccia and defensive lineman James Millette – chose Whitewater, the reigning Division III national champions.

Scaccia was deeply enthused by Butler before his senior football season began, and stayed true to those feelings despite a late push from Whitewater that gave the big-play running back pause.

“It was actually really hard,” Scaccia said. “It was kind of stressful this past week because Whitewater is a great school and they made it hard for me because, originally, I thought I was going to Butler and after I [visited] Whitewater, it got me thinking. I had to do all the pros and cons about these schools and kind of narrowed it down to a couple things that in the end would make me go to Butler.”

Scaccia, the Kane County Chronicle co-Football Player of the Year, played a huge role in propelling Batavia to its first football state championship in 2013, rushing for 1,913 yards and 28 touchdowns while also supplying 313 receiving yards and seven TDs through the air.

He was a Class 6A allstate selection.

Despite his build, the 5-foot-7, 150-plus pound Scaccia was a workhorse at times for Batavia and anticipates a potentially more

A school assembly had run late, prolonging athletes’ arrivals. Although it was minor, the extra time spent in their seats allowed the Cadets valuable extra time to recharge.

“We haven’t placed as high as we had last year, but I feel like we’ve been working a lot harder this year,” senior Jack Fergus said. “We’re swimming most of our meets pretty tired, but we’ve done pretty well for how tired we’ve been in all the meets. I think we’re going to be fine.”

Unlike St. Charles East, which is openly aiming to eclipse the school record of 616,000 training yards in one season, Marmion isn’t going wild on that front.

More than double practices – which Schalz traditionally has avoided – the fatigue stems from an increased focus on weight training.

Marmion holds “dry land” workouts in the weight room two or three times a week, while also stressing calisthenic repeats.

“We’ve definitely stepped it up [from past seasons],” senior Mike Burke said.

“And definitely, the intensity has been stepped up a ton.”

Runner-up finishes at the Naperville North college events meet (Dec. 28) and Sandburg Invitational (Jan. 18) suggest Marmion is rounding into form as the state series approaches. The Cadets finished seventh at state last season but lost part of their core to graduation, including Minnesota freshman Jon Thielen.

NOTEWORTHY This week marks arguably the most critical juncture in the Upstate Eight Conference River race, with both St. Charles schools set to take their second cracks at conference-leading Larkin.

St. Charles East is first up Thursday against the visiting Royals, and the Saints then have another marquee home matchup Saturday against Geneva.

“I call it a season-defining week for us as far as the regular season,” East coach Pat Woods said. “I mean with two of the top four [teams in the conference], one obviously being the best, and one hanging around in Geneva, we have two of our top three opponents this week, so we’ll know by Saturday where we stand and figure out if we still have a legitimate shot or if we’re out of it and have to start working toward regionals. But I feel good about where we’re at and the direction we’re headed, so I think it could be an interesting week.”

Larkin (7-0 UEC River) has a two-game lead in the loss column on St. Charles East (6-2 UEC River) and St. Charles North (5-2 UEC River), which the Royals will visit Saturday.

Geneva is 5-3 in the conference and still has a game at Larkin slated for Feb. 14.

In the first round of conference play, Larkin survived stiff challenges from Geneva and North but handled East relatively easily, winning, 82-65, Dec. 5 after building an 18-point halftime lead.

Woods, however, thinks the Saints are a much better

The Saints’ preparations for Larkin were somewhat hampered by weather-dictated school closings Monday and today, canceling practice. But anticipating that possibility, Woods said the Saints fit in an extra workout Sunday before conducting a youth clinic.

Woods said Saints standout guard Dom Adduci – who has missed East’s past two games with a mild groin strain – practiced Sunday and

Bulldogs lose Peez If Batavia is going to reverse its struggles anytime soon, it will have to happen without dynamic junior forward Chasen Peez.

Peez has missed the past three games and likely will be sidelined an additional three-plus weeks with what coach Jim Nazos described as “a stress reaction” in his back. Nazos said the good news is the condition was diagnosed before it became a full-blown stress fracture.

“Everybody kind of picks it up to replace the 16 points and the eight boards [Peez was averaging],” Nazos said. “You feel bad for him personally to have to be out. I really thought he was making strides in other ways other than just scoring and rebounding. He was making strides defensively and in practice, but those things happen and you move on.”

After falling to Elgin for the second time in a week Saturday, Batavia fell to 6-13 overall, 1-7 in the

St. Charles East captures six individual championships en route to a team title

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Elgin High School sold discounted mattresses in its foyer Saturday, a fundraiser that tempted some wrestlers competing for Upstate Eight Conference titles in adjacent Chesbrough Fieldhouse.

“Over the break, I was going to go to the mattress and take a little nap,” St. Charles East senior 138-pounder Isaiah Vela said, “but ….”

It was probably best Vela didn’t give in. After winning the UEC team title behind six individual champions, the Saints aren’t nearly ready to rest with next month’s state series on deck.

“Wrestling is kind of like a roller coaster; there’s highs and lows,” East 145-pounder Jake Mende said. “At the end of the year, we’re always trying to peak, and I feel like this is the first step in that. And I feel like from now on, we should be getting better and better, so that’s our goal.”

Anthony Rubino (113), Ryan Valesh (132), Keone Derain (152) and Ramon Lopez (160) joined Mende and Vela atop their respective podiums.

Lopez earned his title with a fall, while the rest of his teammates won on decisions.

Batavia (Connor

McKeehan, 220) and St. Charles North (Kolbe O’Brien, 106) also produced champions.

Batavia’s Noah Frazier was second at 195.

The Bulldogs finished fourth out of 14 teams, but collected their first accolade earlier in the day when McKeehan – who captured his first career tournament title – was named the event’s Ed Washington Sportsmanship Award winner.

O’Brien, 30-5 in his debut season, continued a strong run with a fall and two tight decisions in his tournament bouts.

Geneva’s top finisher was runner-up Mike Huck, who challenged Mende for the third time since last season’s conference meet but suffered his third loss in that span, a 4-3 decision.

At 160, Batavia’s Jake Birkhaug encountered an even more immediate case of déjà vu, having just defeated Streamwood’s Darell James – his opponent in the fifth-place match – 1-0 last week.

Birkhaug scored a 6-0 decision this time despite a tender right shoulder he aggravated Friday.

“My right arm doesn’t have the strength it usually does,” Birkhaug said. “I was able to bait him into shooting instead of shooting myself, so that was able to offset some of that.”

Despite cut in hand, Vikings’ Seberger pours in 20 points

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – It was going to take more than a cut right hand to slow down Morgan Seberger on Saturday night.

The Geneva senior scored 20 points to lead the Vikings to a 63-56 victory against St. Charles East in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division girls basketball battle.

Seberger said she injured her shooting hand early in the second quarter.

“It got a little cut and it kept bleeding,” she said. “First, they had like this weird little bandage on it and at halftime I got it wrapped up. I had to go shoot [before the start of the third quarter] to make sure it felt right.”

Geneva (15-5, 6-2 UEC River) needed Seberger’s hot hand to fend off a determined effort by the Saints (10-13, 3-6), who benefited from some pretty torrid shooting of their own from the likes of Kyra Washington (16 points) and Chloe John (10).

Washington, a 6-foot-1 junior, buried a 3-pointer from the left side with three minutes left in the first quarter to give East its largest lead of the night, 14-6.

“Washington had a nice game,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said. “They just work hard. They’re just a scrappy team. I told the kids, ‘This is a team that can outwork you if you let them.’ And they showed that they could do that.”

The Vikings responded to the eight-point deficit with a 9-0 run, capped by five straight points from Seberger on a steal and layu,p and a 3 from right of the key. Seberger connected from 15 feet with six seconds left in the quarter to put Geneva ahead, 17-16.

The Vikings still were up by one at the half, 29-28, but Washington sank a 3 from the top of the key at the start of the third quarter to put the Saints back in front.

Santos, a 6-1 senior, scored all nine of her points in the second half and the Vikings also got contributions inside from 6-2 freshman Grace Loberg (13 points, seven rebounds), 5-10 junior Janie McCloughan (nine points, four rebounds) and 6-0 junior Abby Novak (seven points, seven rebounds).

“Kyra lit us up,“ Seberger said. “[But] then Sidney would hit a shot, I’d hit a shot, we’d have Grace go up for Morgan a layup, Abby Seberger go for a layup.

It was just exciting to finally get going late in the game.”

Loberg scored inside to give the Vikings a 43-35 cushion midway through the third, but East refused to quit. John hit a 15-footer with four seconds left in the quarter to pull the Saints within 48-46.

East coach Lori Drumtra said she was pleased with her team’s effort, especially in the absence of standout point guard Amanda Hilton, recently lost for the season with a knee injury.

“It’s taken us awhile to [learn to] play without Amanda, but I think, especially Katie [Claussner] has really started to take over that spot,” Drumtra said. “And Kyra’s playing better. I mean, I don’t take those two off the floor.”

Claussner, a speedy 5-5 junior guard, slashed her way to 13 points.

Switching from a zone to a man-to-man defense, the Vikings did a better job containing her in the second half. The Saints, on the other hand, had no answer for Seberger, who got open against both zone and man looks.

She scored from the right baseline at the start of the fourth quarter, then knocked in a 3-pointer from the wing with less than three minutes to play to give Geneva its largest lead at 60-50.

Trip could bring out Hawks’ best

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com The Blackhawks left the tundra of Chicago for the relative “warmth” of Calgary on Monday, embarking on their annual ice-show trip as Disney invades the United Center.

It usually means lighthearted talk about bonding on the road, playing freely without the distractions of home life, playing Mario Kart in the hotel and gathering as a team to watch the Super Bowl.

But the mood was decidedly different this time around.

“Let’s look at the short term,” coach Joel Quenneville said after a disheartening 3-1 loss Sunday to the Winnipeg Jets. “Let’s look at Calgary.

Let’s be angry about what happened.”

Angry, frustrated, disappointed – the only momentum the Hawks are bringing with them is negative momentum.

Consecutive losses to the Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild and Jets have all but erased the good vibes from the Hawks’ sweep of the Anaheim Ducks and Boston Bruins on Jan. 17 and 19. It’s hardly

a crisis, but the Ducks have extended their Western Conference lead to seven points and the St. Louis Blues have reduced the Hawks’ lead in the Central Division to one point and have three games in hand.

And this trip promises to be a tough one. After visiting the Flames, the Hawks play the Vancouver Canucks, then run the California gantlet – San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings and Ducks – before playing a solid Phoenix Coyotes squad and heading into the Olympic break.

“Look at it on paper, it’s some tough buildings and some big games,” said Quenneville, who’s looking for more energy than the Hawks had in their brief two-game trip last week to Detroit and Minnesota. “We didn’t have that pace that we’re accustomed to, and we’re going to need it going forward.”

The difficult nature of the trip might work to the Hawks’ advantage. Aside from the fact that they’ve fared well on recent lengthy trips – 5-1 on the circus trip in November, 4-0-2 on the ice-show trip last season – they’ve been at their best

against the best.

“We always seem to rise to the occasion when we’re playing these top teams, and then sometimes we let off the gas, it seems,” winger Kris Versteeg said. “But whoever we’re playing on this road trip, whether it’s a young, energized team in Calgary or Anaheim or L.A., we’re going to have to play the same way every game.”

That means more energy, sounder defense and crisper offense, the kind of effort they got away from the past three games. As captain Jonathan Toews put it: “We need to get rid of these bad habits and get rid of them fast.”

That’s because the Hawks have only six games left to get back on track before the Olympics. They won’t play another game at the United Center until March 4, returning from the break with a road game against the New York Rangers, followed by the game against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Soldier Field.

“It’ll just be that much more exciting when we do come back,” goalie Corey Crawford said. “We play good on the road. We’ll be fine.”

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Sewing was as important as cooking in centuries past. The most valuable things in an 18thcentury American home were linens, bedcovers and drapes.

The wealthy could import fabrics from Europe. The average family made their own fabric.

They raised sheep or plants, sheared the sheep or harvested the plants, and went through many steps to make thread, color it and weave it into cloth.

Then the cloth had to be cut and sewn into clothing or household items. So it is not surprising that the sewing supplies in a well-to-do home were stored in a special sewing worktable in the main room. The women of the household could take out the fabric and sew whenever there was time. It often was a winter job done while sitting near a fireplace. Most sewing stands looked like small tables and stood about 28 inches high, the height of a desk. There was a drawer to hold sewing tools, needles, thread, scissors and measuring tape. Many were made with a large fabric bag hanging below the drawer, accessible when the top of the table was lifted. It is a form not seen in the average 20thcentury home, so when the bag is missing from a table, collectors may not realize they’re looking at a sewing table with a missing part. An October 2013 Skinner auction offered an early 19th-century sewing table missing its original bag. The maple and mahogany worktable with an attractive patterned top sold for $3,900.

kitchen canisters that are the color of mother-of-pearl. They’re decorated with gold trim and red roses. There are six large canisters labeled Coffee, Rice, Oatmeal, Flour, Sugar and Tea; six smaller canisters for spices labeled Ginger, Cinnamon, Cloves, Nutmeg, Allspice and Pepper; and two cruets labeled Oil and Vinegar. The marks on the bottom are “Ditmar Urbach” above a star, the letter “Z,” an image of a wing and “Made in Czechoslovakia.” When were they made and how much are they worth?

A: The mother-of-pearl glaze on your set was popular in the 1920s. Sets like yours sell for about $200 to $400. The pottery where your set was made was founded in 1882 as Brothers Urbach in Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia, Austria (now Trnovany, Czech Republic). In 1919 it merged with Ditmar and became Ditmar-Urbach. 1. Daft Punk does not break character under any circumstance.

Even upon winning the biggest award of the night, album of the year, the helmeted French duo behind last year’s still-inescapable “Get Lucky” didn’t ditch their signature headgear.

This is impressive not just in terms of commitment to character but also because it had to be hot in those helmets after nearly four hours, right?

The duo stayed silent when winning major awards for record of the year and best pop duo/group performance, letting collaborator Pharrell Williams speak on their behalf. And when their name was called for album of the year, the “robot” duo shared an embrace and accepted their trophies but remained wordless and under their helmets.

2. Speaking of Pharrell Williams ... what was the deal with his hats?

If you want to get people talking, this is probably the one question to ask. Anyone who watched will have opinions, jokes and comparisons to other famous hats. Like Arby’s, which was happy to play along. And there was no shortage of opportunities to talk about the hat, since Pharrell – the vocalist on “Get Lucky” – took the stage with Daft Punk every time the duo won an award.

3. It looked like it was going to be Macklemore’s night, but it was only kind of his night.

The Seattle rapper – along with his trusty sidekick Ryan Lewis – seemed poised to be the big winner after he swept the rap categories in the pre-telecast awards ceremony. In winning best rap performance, best rap song and best rap album, he beat out the likes of Drake, Eminem, Jay Z, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar.

Not exactly weak competition. And while there was the expected win for best new artist, the “Thrift Shop” star was shut out of the other major categories.

But on a night filled with spectacle performances, it was Macklemore’s performance of gay-rights anthem “Same Love” that stood out, thanks to the – sweet? gimmicky? both? – actual marriages of 33 couples (billed as gay, straight and of mixed ethnic backgrounds) who officially tied the knot during the performance. Oh yeah, Queen Latifah was the officiant and Madonna came out to sing, as well.

4. Get to know Lorde and Kacey Musgraves.

If you’ve been paying at least sort-of close attention, you already know who these two young female performers are. Lorde is the 17-yearold New Zealander whose breakout single “Royals” remains an unstoppable force; Kacey Musgraves is the 25-year-old Texan who has emerged as country music’s brightest new star. Both had big nights. Lorde gave a typically bewitching performance of “Royals” early in the evening and took home awards for song of the year and best pop solo performance. Musgraves gave a sweet and straightforward performance of her hit “Follow

Your Arrow” before taking home the award for best country album. In that category, she beat out Taylor Swift, who might be losing her magic touch.

The former Grammy favorite went home empty-handed.

5. It is still Beyonce’s world and we are still just living in it.

It may seem like eons ago, but way back at the beginning of the show, Queen Bey kicked things off with a commanding and seductive performance of “Drunk in Love.” Everyone in the audience seemed to be basking in her presence; even when husband Jay Z emerged for his verse, he seemed to be simply be doing the same. For 8 p.m. on CBS, it was pretty risque.

6. The show was long. Far, far too long.

There is absolutely no reason that show needed to be nearly four hours.

Dedicating the telecast to performances instead of awards makes sense, but it would have been OK to trim a few.

More than a few. We’d all be just fine and a little less tired if, say, Hunter Hayes, John Legend, Metallica/Lang Lang and Keith Urban/Gary Clark, Jr., didn’t make the final cut. This was the double-LP of awards shows, and there are always too many tracks on double LPs.

Now that I am healthy again, I’m ready to return to work and move to a new home, but I am encountering severe resistance from my parents.

As I have recovered, our situation has gone from my parents helping me to my assuming the majority of the household responsibilities.

My parents say they know I want to go back to work and know it will be good for me to be independent, but because of their own health concerns they need me to stay.

I have always felt a strong responsibility toward my family, but I know that not having a home to call our own limits the personal growth of my children and me.

I have been offered a great job in another state that would allow me to provide well for my children, but I feel crushing guilt for even considering

Febrile seizures in kids usually have no long-term effects Dear Doctor K: My 9-month-old daughter had a seizure last time she had a high fever. The pediatrician said it could happen again.

What do I need to know?

Dear Reader: The medical term for what your daughter experienced is febrile seizure. I was taught that febrile seizures are caused by a high fever or a sudden rise in body temperature. The effect of the higher body temperature makes the brain “irritable” and causes a seizure. But in the last few years, we’ve learned it may be more complicated than that.

Some childhood seizures are caused by a new infection with a common virus, called human herpesvirus-6. This virus infects most children at a young age and remains in their bodies for the rest of their lives.

When a child first is infected with this virus, it travels to the brain, where it causes a fever – and may cause chemical changes in the brain that lead to seizures.

We don’t know how many febrile seizures are caused by this virus.

We do know that severe febrile seizures that don’t end promptly often are caused by the virus.

What is a seizure? The brain’s nerve cells communicate with each other by giving off tiny elec-

(On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put an illustration of what electrical activity in the brain looks like normally and during a seizure.)

Depending on where in the brain the seizure starts, and whether the electrical firestorm travels to another part of the brain, seizures have different effects on the body. Some seizures cause a person to temporarily lose consciousness. Some cause different muscles in the body to twitch or jerk uncontrollably. Others just cause temporary strange behavior.

As your doctor mentioned, many children who have had a febrile seizure will have another one. One of the best ways to prevent one is to prevent a high fever. If your daughter develops a fever, have her drink plenty of water and fruit juices to prevent dehydration. Give her ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or

acetaminophen (Tylenol), but not aspirin.

You cannot stop a seizure once it starts. If your daughter has a seizure, the following can help keep her safe: • Place her on her side or stomach on a safe, flat surface, such as the floor. Keep her away from furniture or objects that may cause injury.

• Tilt her head to the side to prevent choking.

• Do not restrain her, or put anything between her teeth.

• Observe her carefully so you can describe the events to your doctor.

• If the seizure lasts longer than about five minutes, call your doctor.

Otherwise, call your doctor after the seizure is over, to arrange an appointment if necessary.

It can be extremely distressing to watch your child experience a seizure. Fortunately, most children outgrow this condition, and febrile seizures generally are not harmful and do not cause longterm problems.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and a senior in high school. My parents were divorced last year, and I decided to live with my mother because I think my father is to blame for the split.

My mother has a boyfriend. He’s a nice man and I like him very much. He’s from California and plans to move to the Los Angeles area in a month. My mother will move too, and they want me to go with them. I love my mom, but I want to stay here and graduate with my classmates.

Dear Nameless: I usually encourage parents to let their children graduate with their classmates, if at all possible.

In your case, however, I don’t think it would work, since you have no relative with whom you could stay other than your father. You’re faced with a dilemma that has no ideal solution.

Dr. Wallace: My parents suspect that my 19-year-old brother is using cocaine because he has been acting very weird lately and my mother found a white powder substance in his room. She flushed the stuff down the toilet.

We have talked to my brother about his possible cocaine use, but he denies it. All he’ll admit to is smoking pot once in a while.

We need to know the symptoms of cocaine use so that we can get help for him if he’s using it.

Ecstasy is a synthetic hallucinogenic drug and is popular to drug users because of its ample availability and its low price. Constant use of ecstasy can cause brain damage. Any dose can cause anxiety, nausea, sweating, teeth clenching and muscle cramping, and in some cases, even death.

Raves are late-night parties that can hold a large group of people.

Besides dancing, drug usage (including ecstasy) is prevalent at rave parties.

Alfred North Whitehead, an English mathematician and philosopher who died in 1947, said, “It requires a very unusual mind to make an analysis of the obvious.”

What some people see as obvious, others find unusual. Take, for example, today’s deal. Look at the North hand. Your partner opens one heart; you respond one no-trump; and he rebids two clubs. What would you do now?

It looks obvious to raise to three clubs, game-invitational.

But you would do that with a weaker hand. For example, take two of the low clubs and make them low diamonds. You would still raise to three clubs. This hand, though, is more powerful.

In fact, if you had had kingqueen-jack-sixth of clubs and the diamond king, you probably would have responded two clubs, not one no-trump, planning to rebid three clubs. How can you show a very good three-club raise?

By rebidding two spades. This cannot be natural, because you would have responded one spade, not one no-trump, with length in that suit. And it says nothing about your holding in spades.

(The same call can be used if opener rebids two diamonds and you have excellent support for that suit.)

In this instance, South, with those wonderful aces, should continue with three spades to describe his distribution, and leave three no-trump as an option should North have strong diamonds. Here, North would probably bid four clubs and South would raise to game.

As you can see, five clubs needs either the heart finesse or the club finesse to work. But three no-trump has no chance with the club finesse failing.
