Bringing Kory Home effort set in Elburn Kaneland teacher aims to adopt special-needs child from Europe

ELBURN – A fundraising effort – Bringing Kory Home – aims to help the family of a Kaneland High School teacher in the quest to adopt a 3-year-old boy from Europe with special needs.

The event will start at 5 p.m. Feb. 27 at the American Legion, 112 N. Main St., Elburn. The event includes a drawing and a dinner, and there will be raffle prizes.

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla Nora Tomasik, a special education teacher at Kaneland, her husband, Patrick, and their sons, Patrick, Caden and Eli. In a story that appeared in the Kane County Chronicle in September, Nora Tomasik learned about Kory while she was reading about National Down Syndrome Day. She came across a photo of a boy who she said looked like her youngest son.

The more she learned about the situation, the more she wanted to help. But she also found that the adoption would cost at least $25,000. A

GoFundMe effort had raised $2,550 as of Tuesday afternoon.

The Elburn event will raise funds to help cover the cost. Tickets will cost $25 each, and each ticket includes a meal and a beverage.

There will be no more than 400 tickets sold, and there will be 20 winners, with prizes ranging from $50 to $250.

Annette Theobald, who runs Paisano’s Pizza and also Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill in Elburn, became involved in the fundraiser. Theobald has helped organize many other fundraising events in the area. She said could understand what the Tomasiks are facing, as Theobald has two adopted children.

“Adoptions in general

are not cheap, having gone through two myself,” Theobald said.

Theobald said there is room for one additional table sponsor. She said tickets to the event would be available at Old Second National Bank, 749 N. Main St., Elburn, and at Paisano’s, which is at 106 N. Main St. in Elburn.

Theobald credited the American Legion for its help, offering the building rentfree and helping sell raffle tickets at the event. Also, the legion’s women’s auxiliary will bring desserts, Theobald said.

STC Capital Bank, which has two offices in St. Charles and one in South Elgin, was established by a group of bankers and investors who aimed to build a community

Geneva family to climb for children’s hospital fundraiser

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Nowak family of Geneva will be climbing 80 floors – 1,643 steps – on Sunday at the Step Up for Kids stair climb at the Aon Center in Chicago.

This will be the family’s eighth year participating in the fundraiser for the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, Kristen Nowak said. Their team, Jerry’s Heart Racers, is named for their son, Jerry, 10, who was born prematurely at 37 weeks. Jerry Nowak has faced many health challenges – and will continue to the rest of his life, Kristen Nowak said.

This year, Jerry Nowak was named “patient champion” for the fundraiser.

“We would not be a family of five if Lurie did not exist. It means everything for us, and to say Jerry is the patient champion – it makes us proud that he is still here. Jerry Nowak was born at Central DuPage Hospital, with transposition of the great vessels – meaning his heart his valves were switched, and he was not pumping oxygen-

ated blood through his body, Kristen Nowak said.

At Lurie, he had life-saving open-heart surgery and was put in a medically induced coma for five weeks, Kristen Nowak said. He has developmental disabilities, autism and mild cerebral palsy. He had a second heart surgery at age 3 to replace his pulmonary valve and likely will have another surgery in the future, she said.

“We’ve just been patients at that hospital multiple times a year. The doctors that take care of him are part of our family,” Kristen Nowak said.

Their team includes 30 members. The team includes Kristen, Jerry, C.J. – Christian Junior, 13 – and Katy, 6, the children’s father, St. Charles resident Christian Nowak – as well as extended

family, friends and co-workers, Kristen Nowak said. Jerry Nowak can go about halfway, then his parents share carrying him the rest of the way, she said.

Overall, the event is expected to have 25,000 participants and to raise more than $700,000. The money raised will support the family services department, which provides emotional and physical support to families going through serious medical issues such as her son’s, Kristen Nowak said.

“When your child is in the hospital, the hospital becomes your home,” Kristen Nowak said. “They made sure I had food, that my other son – who was 4 – had toys to play with and was occupied. They not only took care of Jerry, they took care of our whole family.”

Fermilab to bring science to life during Family Open House

BATAVIA – If your child wants to see the effects of liquid nitrogen up close and personal, Fermilab is the place to visit this weekend.

The national laboratory for particle physics research will open its doors to families from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday during its 11th annual free open house, said Spencer Pasero, head of Fermilab’s Office of Education and Public Outreach.

“Our job is … to get students and their parents connected to the lab, asking questions about physics [and thinking about the] smallest particles of matter and biggest structures of the cosmos,” Pasero said.

Several activities in Wilson Hall have been arranged to spark interest in students of all ages.

Jerry Zimmerman, a cryogenics engineer known by students as “Mr. Freeze,” will demonstrate the “cool” effects of liquid nitrogen during several cryogenics performances throughout the afternoon.

Hands-on exhibits will be available, with scientists standing by to answer questions.

High schoolers from four area schools – including St. Charles East – will illustrate physics principles to younger students through their own exhibits during a “physics carnival.”

Tours of the remote operation centers, from which many of the lab’s experiments are controlled, will take place as well. Operators will be at their stations ready to discuss their jobs as visitors pass through.

Additional tours will require reservations, including one to see the 50-foot-wide Muon g-2 electromagnet that was transported from Long Island to the lab in 2013.

Robin Bjorkquist, a graduate student at Cornell University who has been at Fermilab since July, will lead the Muon g-2 tours. Through her

graduate work, the 28-year-old helped disassemble and reassemble the electromagnet and is passionate about the experiment.

“One of the things I think is so neat about it is we build these really large machines full of special detectors and special electronics, and it takes years to design the

equipment we need, and the whole reason is to measure the universe on a scale that is much smaller than what any of us experiences in our daily lives,” she said.

Witness testifies no correlation between treatment centers, crime

bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – A residential drug or alcohol treatment center would not create more crime in the area, an expert witness testified Tuesday at a continuing zoning hearing on a proposed alcohol and drug addiction treatment center near Campton Hills.

Maxxam Partners LLC is seeking a special use permit from the Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals to convert the former Glenwood School

for Boys, at 41W400 Silver Glen Road, into a 120-bed private pay, luxury treatment center.

Leslie Hendrickson, who holds a doctorate in sociology, said he compiled data from existing studies and updated them.

“I am not adding much interpretation,” Hendrickson said. “Concern about crime around the location is a common theme. … It’s a very common problem.”

Residents near the proposed treatment center have

said they feared there would be an increase in crime from those in the facility.

But Hendrickson said the studies he compiled show there is no correlation between crime and substance abuse centers – whether they are outpatient, residential or a combination.

Studies measured the location of crime using GPS, longitude and latitude to study the relationship of crime to business types in a given area, Hendrickson said.

GENEVA – The Geneva Public Library Board could vote to buy the former Sixth Street School property this week, if trustees get final details from Kane County officials.

The action to approve confirmation of the contract terms and closing preparations for the purchase is listed on the agenda for the regular meeting, which is at 7 p.m. Thursday at the library, 127 James St., Geneva.

Library board President Robert Shiffler said library officials are still trying to fi-

nalize details with county officials.

“We have some final details to come to an agreement on, if we get a response from the county with additional details,” Shiffler said. “If we do not hear back from the county, we will not act on it this week.”

A year ago, the library board adopted a resolution to buy the property, at 210 S. Sixth St., from the county for $1.5 million as a site for a possible new building.

The county had used the former school site for the Regional Office of Education. It has since been moved out, and the building has been demolished.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Mothers Club is now taking applications for the 2016 Sherry Costello Memorial Scholarship Award. This scholarship provides money to women who are currently earning a college degree in an effort to better themselves and their families.

All winners are determined based on need and academic merit. Each award can range from $500 to $4,000 and must be used strictly for educational expenses (such as tuition, books and fees). All funds awarded will be sent directly to each award winner’s college or university.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Kane County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for its 2016 Citizens Police Academy, which begins in March, according to a news release.

The free 10-week course aims to provide citizens with an opportunity to learn how policing works in their community and gives participants a behind-the-scenes perspective into the many facets of law enforcement, the release states.

It will address such topics as traffic laws, crime prevention, identity theft, scams, patrol, investigations, corrections and gang identification, according to the release. It indicated that each topic is developed and led by a sheriff’s

deputy.

“This course is an excellent resource for the teachers, community leaders, neighborhood watch leaders, elected officials, or students pursuing a degree in criminal justice,” the release states.

Sessions will be held Wednesdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. beginning March 23, according to the release. Most courses will be held at the Prisco Community Center, 150 W. Illinois Ave., Aurora, although three will be at the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, 37W755 Route 38, St. Charles Township.

The program ends May 25.

Evelyn Marie Hardt Barrett, passed away January 23, 2016, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin and friend resided in Batavia, IL, and Fontana on Geneva Lake WI. Evelyn who was born in Lily Lake, IL, was a long-time resident of St. Charles, where she met and married her husband Bill and reared her family.

After graduating as the valedictorian of Elburn High School, Evelyn graduated Northern Illinois University, where she attended on a full academic scholarship and was a member of the Mortarboard.

Her spirit of participation and volunteerism continued in St. Charles, including serving as an officer of St. Patrick’s Parish Women’s Club, president of St. Charles Junior Woman’s Club and as a member of the Delnor Hospital Auxiliary. Evelyn enjoyed attending bridge parties and was a member of numerous bridge clubs, playing scrabble with her family, doing crossword puzzles with her grown grandchildren whom she continually outwitted and avidly reading everything in print throughout her life.

She is preceded in death by husband, William (Bill) Barrett; parents, Peter and Della Hardt; brothers and their spouses, Richard (Clara Stonecipher) Hardt and Robert (Shirley) Hardt.

Police: Teens ID’d in burglary at Wredling Middle School

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Three bored teens spent their Saturday night at a St. Charles middle school, where they caused at least $2,500 in damage, police said.

St. Charles Deputy Chief David Kintz said the boys – two were 14, one was 15 – climbed through a Wredling Middle School window that was ajar about 8:30 p.m.

He described it as a crime of opportunity that involved “clearly a lack of thinking.”

“It was just out of boredom,” Kintz said, noting the boys were in the building for a couple of hours. “It was something to do.”

Damage inside the school affected several classrooms, offices and the library, Kintz said.

He noted the $2,500 damage estimate was conservative and did not include cleanup costs.

Several tables, ceiling tiles, computer accessories, a vend-

ing machine and two Android phones were damaged, he said.

Additionally, he said, a fire extinguisher was discharged, and a wall clock that is part of the building’s public address system was pulled down.

“We think it still works,” Kintz said.

He said the teens are also accused of stealing a laptop, two Chromebooks, two iPads and two Android phones, which a class uses as robotic controllers. The items since have been recovered, he said.

Police were called to the school about 1:30 p.m. Sunday after a custodian discovered the damage, Kintz said. Video surveillance helped authorities identify the teens, who are St. Charles School District 303 students but do not attend Wredling, Kintz said.

He said they and their parents are cooperating.

St. Charles police plan to review the case with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office on Wednesday.

GENEVA – The Horn Steel Company in Geneva recently built a 3-ton cube of steel called “Skycube,” currently on display at the Elmhurst Art Museum.

Betty Horn, the widow of William C. Horn, whose grandfather founded the company, said artist David Haskins designed it for Horn Steel to build.

“You can view the sky straight ahead without looking up,” Horn said. “It’s an 8-foot by 8-foot cube.”

How Flint, Ferguson, New Orleans and Baltimore are connected

The Washington Post Flint, Ferguson, New Orleans and Baltimore – cities now inseparable from the national news stories centered there – became calamities for separate reasons.

One was a natural disaster (made worse by human error), another a wholly man-made crisis. The two others began with police violence, but in disparate settings: the newly impoverished suburbs and the long-distraught inner city. Flint and New Orleans were failures of infrastructure, Baltimore and Ferguson a collapse of human relationships.

“On one level,” Henry Louis Taylor said, “they all look and appear to be very, very different.”

But, argues the professor of urban and regional planning at the University at Buffalo, it’s about time we begin to talk about them in the same breath. “These are places that are left behind, forgotten,” he says.

“They’re places we’ve gotten very good at shielding from view.”

Together, he argues that these cities – and recent events there – point to the endurance in America of structural racism, of minorities disproportionately left vulnerable to the economy or the environment, of communities abandoned by taxpayer dollars, public interest and government oversight.

“Flint is what I call ‘a throwaway city,’ ” Taylor says, to take one example. “It was left by the big industries. It was left on its own, by the state, by taxpayers, by the county.”

And then such places must strike terrible financial bargains – ticketing residents in Ferguson to generate money, downgrading the water supply in Flint to cut costs. The same shortage of funding also affects schools. The quality of schools alters children’s futures.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

Those children remain in poverty as adults. And their own families live with the environmental costs of decades-old decisions on where to put highways, factories and power plants.

These kinds of places are frequently home to minorities. And they often exist, too, within larger regions that do have resources – but where the neighbors have been quite ingenious in making sure they don’t have to share them.

“Across the board, when we start to probe deep into these forgotten places, we start to see a trend emerge,” Taylor says. “We start to see the different ways in which racism impacts African-Americans, and we also see the different ways where it impacts the places where they live.”

In the heat of an unfolding news event, it appears as if we’re looking at something else, or something smaller – a problem of Environmental Protection Agency leadership or aging pipes or bad apples among police officers.

“We’ll see police brutality in Ferguson, and we’ll see police brutality in Baltimore or Cleveland, but we’re confused about the places,” Taylor says. “Well, in Ferguson, you had whites in control. But in Baltimore, you had blacks in control, so maybe that’s not racism, maybe that’s something else. We’re not sure exactly what we’re seeing.

Or you see Flint, and people are really confused, because we don’t know what’s going on. Maybe those were just a bunch of bad decisions people made, and it doesn’t have anything to do with race.”

What we should be seeing, he suggests, are links among all of these events and the larger structures that contributed to them.

To the Editor: It is time that we all acknowledge that we have failed to help families in the troubled neighborhoods of Chicago. Political lip service and payments to the connected and to those with their own personal financial agenda has done nothing to solve the problem.

There are many good, hardworking families in these neighborhoods, but many have lost hope that things will ever get better.

What can be done to give them hope: 1. Effective police protection that can be trusted.

Police need to walk the neighborhood beats again.

It’s not enough to drive in a police car. Police must get to know the families, and the families need to get to know the police if they are to trust them.

Neighborhood schools must be made safe.

2. Jobs, jobs, jobs! Goodpaying jobs are needed.

Not long ago, there were many manufacturing, automotive and other employers, who now have left for many reasons. We need to give businesses incentives to come back. This is a crisis that requires solutions “from outside the box” and that requires true nonpolitical leadership. Leave your political agenda and leave your political spin. In exchange for an agreement to hire a minimum number of area residents and an agreement to stay open for an agreed term, Illinois and Chicago need to establish an enterprise zone with reduced taxes and fees, as well as the right for businesses to be able to reject unionization. What do we have to lose – it just might work!

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

3. Establish before- and after-school programs in each public school. Provide educational, social service and athletic programs.

Partner with park districts or nonprofit groups to provide the services.

4. Hire high school students to clean up the neighborhood. Require neighborhood cleanup services for all nonviolent offenders on probation or on parole.

There is much more we can do, but this would be a start. We have lost many generations by not doing anything. Everyone deserves hope, no matter where you live.

‘Just keep working at it’ Persistent North wins home finale

kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North girls bowlers typically treat the party room at St. Charles Bowl as a multipurpose facility.

The North Stars stretch there before home meets and convene with coach Lindsay Madej after competing.

On Tuesday more than other nights, North had cause to haul in some tables and inflate a few balloons. The North Stars topped St. Charles East, 2,8332,678, defeating the Saints for the first time in three seasons while rolling a season-best series.

“We’re always striving to get more pins. We’re striving to get more spares,” North senior Jessica Miller said. “We just keep working at it.”

Host North earned four of a possible five Upstate Eight Conference points in the dual, winning the second and third games to then gain two points for the best overall pinfall.

East edged North, 926-925, in the opening game, but the North Stars maintained their resolve and remained upbeat.

What else is new?

“Absolutely, energy is a huge thing,” North Stars sophomore Alyssa Byers said.

“Helping each other out still.

Making sure if you’re missing by a little bit, telling each other what you can work on, what you can do with this. Asking each other and just getting advice.”

The Saints enjoy a similar collaborative. Third-year coach Tom Cole, who competed at Sandburg during his prep days, began the season with a mix of experienced and novice bowlers.

Cole found the best strategy was to begin with the basics.

“They did great. We’ve been practicing all season for, essentially, meets like this,” Cole said. “Something that we know is going to challenge ourselves. Something that is really going to push forth our girls’ abilities. And I think that they shined through today.”

East junior Emma Vitallo led the team with a 677 series, 11 pins ahead of freshman teammate Meagan Markovich, who had the Saints’ high game with a 227. Sophomore Cassie Cartee had a 528 series, and a late scoring change to her Game 1 score helped vault East past North.

“Everything kind of comes into place, and that’s what they’re working on,” Cole said.

Knights lose nail-biter

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Bailey C r i m m i n s w a s d o m i n a ting inside, and the Kaneland girls basketball team scored 14 first-quarter points against a Sycamore team that sometimes doesn’t yield that many in a half.

But the Spartan defense clamped down, Crimmins scored four points the rest of the way and Sycamore beat the Knights, 47-41, on Tuesday in a pivotal Northern Illinois Big 12 East matchup.

“She has given us fits for a long time,” Sycamore coach Brett Goff said. “She’s just a big load inside, and does a very good job using her body, establishing position in the post, right next to the post.

I should give my girls credit, she about fouled out all of us, but luckily we have three pretty good centers to throw at her.”

Chloe Goff, Taiya Hopkins and Kayley Aase rotate on Crimmins, settling down late with the benefit of extra help defense, Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said.

The Knights found themselves in foul trouble throughout the second half, reaching the double bonus with 3:32 left in the third quarter.

“When we had different personnel, we started standing a little bit and they were able to help,” Colombe said.

“When you don’t have a lot of movement, that help can stay there longer and longer.

So we need to move the ball more and have people cutting, because sometimes we would get caught passing in the perimeter and standing.”

After the Spartans (16-4, 8-1 NI Big 12 East) scored the first basket, Kaneland (16-3, 5-3) scored 14 of the next 18 points and led, 19-15, at halftime.

Down six, Sycamore scored the next eight points.

“We had opportunities, even in the last minute or whatever it was, we had a drive to rim and the ball went in and out,” Colombe said. “I thought we had some good looks at the end. But the free throws, sending them to the line, they got into the double bonus real early.”

After making 2 of 5 free throws in the first half, Sycamore went 15 for 16 in the second half.

“We talked about that at halftime – if you get the opportunity, you have to take advantage of it,” Brett Goff said. “We’re shooting over 70 percent for the year, which is the best any team I’ve ever had has done. We did a lot better in the second half,

from a variety of people.”

Kylie Modaff heated up in the second half for the Knights, finishing with 15 points, 12 of them on 3-pointers. Vanessa Gould led Kane-

land with four rebounds as Sycamore finished with a 2521 edge on the boards despite the Knights having a 16-11 edge at halftime.

Lauren Goff led the Spartans with nine points as seven Sycamore players had at least five points. Chloe Goff had four rebounds to lead Sycamore.

The Spartans defeated the Knights for the second time this season, leaving Sycamore and Yorkville as the only one-loss teams in the conference. The Foxes beat the Spartans earlier this season.

“We came out slow, but after the first quarter we played pretty well,” Goff said. “To beat a team like Kaneland twice, they’re awfully good. We’ve played pretty well in at least two games this year, and got the better of them, I guess.”

NOTEWORTHY Vikings ‘sharing the ball’ and successes

An 8-0 record in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play suggests otherwise, but Geneva has encountered hostility during its latest run to the top of the league standings.

Take, for instance, the early stages of the second half of a 55-43 home win against St. Charles North on Jan. 19.

“When we started to get a lead and then the game started to slip away, they needed to start pressing,” Geneva sophomore guard Margaret Whitley said. “At first, we kind of freaked out at it a little bit, but then I think as we started slowing down and coming on, we hit the open man and got down

Once more, adjustments have boosted the Vikings while maintaining their standing as a Class 4A contender. Or, as North coach Sean Masoncup calls Geneva, “a factory.”

Geneva is 7-1 in the new year, losing its lone game, 54-47, to Indiana Heritage Christian in a showcase at Fremd three weekends ago.

The Vikings are 17-3 overall and primed to make another postseason push under coach Sarah Meadows.

“We’re obviously upset with our losses, but we’ve learned from them, and I think it’s made us better overall,” junior post Grace Loberg said.

“We’ve been sharing the

ball really well and getting it into Grace, getting it inside,” Whitley added. “And when they start to double her, then we get outside looks. It’s good that we have both the inside and outside games. … No matter who you’re playing, you need to be able to play both.”

Masoncup and the rest of the Vikings’ River foes can attest to that all too well.

“We have to continue to strive to be what they are, and that comes from putting together four quarters,” Masoncup said.

Royals take battle of Edgelawn

Aurora Central Catholic juniors Sabrina Ganofsky and Alex Johnston once attend-

On Monday, they united to nearly defeat their newly shared nemesis.

The Royals trailed, 31-25, at halftime of the nonconference game but began their push to secure Edgelawn Drive bragging rights with a 12-0 run in the third quarter.

Hot start boosts Vikings

St. Charles East • Senior • Wrestling Why he was selected: Rubino won each of his three bouts at the Upstate Eight Conference tournament over the weekend to capture the 126-pound title.

126-pound East wrestler Anthony Rubino earned an Upstate Eight Conference tournament title and was voted the league’s most outstanding wrestler Saturday. Today, he’s the Kane County Chronicle/St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week. Rubino (31-6) caught up with Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley to discuss his season to date and his bid to improve on last season’s fifth-place finish at the Class 3A state tournament.

Here’s an edited transcript: Describe your mindset.

You’re always so dialed in.

I mean, when I’m warming up, it doesn’t matter who I’m wrestling. I’ve just got to go, go, go. That’s how I wrestle.

How have you felt about how things are going for you

“I felt good warming up,” the 6-foot-8 senior said. “We were able to work the ball inside-out, and I got some shots to go in.

My teammates did a great job in getting the ball to me.”

Fuzak led the Vikings (18-5) with 20 points for the game.

South Elgin assistant coach Chuck Fed, filling in for head coach Jim Cook, who had a family emergency to handle, said the Vikings took the game to the Storm.

“Geneva came ready to play.

They attacked us in the first half and all game,” Fed said.

“They attacked us instead of us attacking them.”

The Vikings did not come out with the same laser focus to start the second half.

Ralston called two timeouts within the first three minutes of the third quarter, feeling that his squad lacked intensity.

“At halftime, we said we had to work on keeping our focus.

We talked about some of the cuts not being as crisp as they should be to nit-pick a little,” Ralston said. “Then we came out and let them go crazy. …

Three times down the floor, we didn’t run any offense at all.”

Even with their third-quarter struggles, the Vikings still led by 23 points heading into the fourth quarter.

With Geneva starters on the bench for the fourth quarter, the Storm (11-11) outscored the Vikings, 25-11, in the last eight minutes to close the final deficit to single digits.

Storm sophomore Anthony Lynch outscored the entire Geneva squad in the fourth quarter, recording 14 points. Lynch had 16 points for the game.

Fuzak said the Vikings need to work on finishing games.

“We need to keep our heads in the game,” Fuzak said. “We need to keep our foot on the gas pedal.”

“They deserve this. The Batavia community deserves this. And the school board and the booster club partnered up and did what’s best for the kids. I don’t know what more you can say.”

FieldTurf USA Inc. will install the turf surface, while Hoppy’s Landcaping, Inc. replaces the track.

Construction likely will begin in May, Andrews said. The Batavia girls soccer team plays its final home game May 12, the final scheduled spring activity at Bulldog Stadium, Andrews said.

The first football game on the new turf tentatively would be held Sept.

16, when the Bulldogs host Elgin. Bat-

avia opens the 2016 football season with three successive road games.

Andrews said he does not expect Batavia to lose any home football games if inclement weather delayed construction.

How have you liked the team dynamic? There are a few freshmen doing well along with the veterans.

We’ve been being good mentors to the freshmen … in our lineup. … It’s good for the whole team, especially when, down low, our guys are winning and it helps us build the momentum for later on.

Does it feel like your senior year state series?

Yeah. I’m ready for it. I probably have one of the toughest brackets in the state, I’m willing to say. But I’m ready for it and ready to take on whoever comes in my way.

GENEVA – A stellar first half paced the Geneva boys basketball team to a 69-60 win against South Elgin Tuesday night.

The Vikings hit five 3-pointers, four by Bennett Fuzak, in the first 16 minutes of action, building a 43-21 halftime lead in the Upstate Eight Conference crossover.

“That may have been as good a half of basketball as we have played all season,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said.

“On offense, we executed plays.

We got what we wanted. On defense, we got turnovers.”

Geneva led, 23-12, after one quarter with Fuzak scoring 10 points and Jordan Vedder adding two three-point plays.

Fuzak also led the Vikings in scoring in the second quarter with two 3-point field goals.

Batavia approves turf project BATAVIA – In a unanimous 7-0 vote Tuesday, the Batavia School District 101 Board approved a contract to install artificial turf at Bulldog Stadium over the summer, district spokesperson Sue Gillerlain confirmed.

The district also will replace the stadium track as part of a project estimated to cost $1.42 million.

The Batavia Bulldog Boosters are prepared to donate $500,000 over five years.

“Obviously, I’m extremely happy for our student-athletes,” Batavia athletic director Dave Andrews said.

• Women age 55-74. Both guidelines recommend mammograms every two years (with one exception, mentioned next).

• Life expectancy less than 10 years. The ACS no longer recommends regular screening mammograms if a woman has an illness or condition that gives her a life expectancy of less than 10 years.

• Breast examination by doctor. The ACS previously recommended doctors perform regular physical examinations of a woman’s breasts to feel for suspicious lumps. Based on a lack of evidence this finds cancer at an early and curable stage, it no longer recommends this practice.

Why do the experts have different opinions on these questions? For example, why does the ACS recommend a mammogram every year for women aged 50-54, whereas the USPSTF recommends it every two years?

Because of new evidence.

The ACS commissioned a large study involving more than 15,000 women. They found in premenopausal (but not postmenopausal) women, the tumors that were discovered during an every two-year mammogram program were larger and more advanced than those tumors discovered during an every-year program.

Indeed, if mammograms and examination of the breasts by the doctor might catch a cancer at an early, curable stage, why not simply do them? I’ll give you my answer to that question – and to the question you asked me – in tomorrow’s column.

Dr. Wallace : I’m engaged to a wonderful fellow named Clarence.

We are both high school graduates and we plan to be married this coming June.

We both have jobs. I am a hairdresser and he works in his uncle’s construction business.

He is everything I ever dreamed of for when I marry and both of my parents love him, too.

He has been a perfect boyfriend and I’m sure we are “the perfect couple” and my parents also agree.

The only thing that disturbs me right now is my grandmother’s attitude.

She lives with us and she is basically a nice person but she is often opinionated. She does not think I should marry this young man because of his name.

And the best way is to bring the two of them together in a casual way and let her get to know him.

Once she sees his good qualities, she may realize that her granddaughter is about to marry a really terrific guy.

It is possible that this will not work but it’s worth a try.

If she thinks making fun of his name is “telling the truth,” she may not be on very firm ground mentally.

If she doesn’t show any positive change in her behavior, you should have the family meeting with your mom and dad and discuss how distressing and hurtful her comments are to you and get them to lay down the law to her.

You can’t always be shielding your boyfriend from Grandma’s remarks, so it may be necessary for you to warn your fiancé that Grandma is a mean-spirited old lady that no one listens to any more.

Dr. Wallace : I’d like to respond to the letter from the 16-year-old girl who came home an hour late from a date and the girl’s father was so mad that he almost hit the guy when he walked her to the door.

My parents have taught me that I am responsible for my life and if I come home late I’m the one to blame, not my date.

I’m 17 and I try to behave responsibly.

If this girl breaks curfew on a regular basis, it’s possible she isn’t mature enough to be dating, regardless of her age.

Unless the guy forced her against her will to stay out, he is not the one to blame. –

Dear Dr. K: I’m a 47-yearold woman who never has had a mammogram. Some experts recommend I get one, but others do not. I understand the American Cancer Society recently updated its recommendations about breast cancer screening.

Does it say I should have a mammogram? If so, which experts should I believe?

Dear Reader: I’m surprised when people are bothered by medical experts having different opinions.

Expert politicians, expert lawyers, expert architects – experts of all kinds disagree with each other all the time.

Why? Because it is rare for the “truth” of any question to be clear beyond dispute.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) previously recommended women begin getting mammograms at age 40. On the other hand, another expert group – the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) – recommends mammograms begin at age 50. That difference has confused many women. The good news is the ACS recommendations published in October 2015 bring its advice closer to the advice given by the USPSTF. So it’s a bit less confusing.

Before I summarize where the two expert committees agree and where they differ, please understand we’re talking about recommendations only for the average woman – not a woman at higher risk for breast cancer. Also, I’m talking about only these two expert committees, although there are several other expert committees with slightly different recommendations.

• Women age 40-44.

Neither the ACS nor the USPSTF now recommends regular mammography in this age range.

• Women age 45-49. The ACS, but not the USPSTF, now recommends mammograms every year.

• Women age 50-54. The ACS recommends mammograms every year, but the USPSTF recommends mammograms every two

Certainly in all this time you could have picked her up. A blanket “come anytime, just call first” isn’t a proper invitation – particularly if the person doesn’t drive.

If you prefer she not be an overnight guest, I don’t think your fiancé should force it.

And if you prefer she not meddle in your relationship with her son, I hope you made it clear to her when she “scolded” you. Of course, it wouldn’t have happened if her son hadn’t tattled to her – which should be a glimpse of what marriage to him may be like if you don’t get this straightened out now.

Dear Abby: I have been married for 10 years. Four years ago, while waiting for our divorce to be finalized, I decided I’d start dating online and suggested my wife do the same. We were still friends, so I didn’t think it was crossing any boundaries.

My online dating efforts were met with peculiar results. All of the six women I connected with either stood me up or made excuses why they couldn’t or wouldn’t meet me in person. Out of frustration I began dating my wife again, and we canceled the divorce proceedings.

About a year after we got back together, my wife confessed the women I had reached out to online were all fictitious personae she had constructed with the intent of exhausting my search efforts. It worked.

We now are filing for divorce again, and I’m worried she may do the same thing.

Given that trumps were 2-2, the defenders could not stop declarer from taking five hearts, three diamonds, one club and a spade ruff in the dummy.
