Former Kane County sheriff George Kramer dies at 81

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Former Kane County sheriff George Kramer is being remembered as someone who had a love for people and took the time to listen to them.

George Kramer, who served as Kane County’s sheriff from 1978 to 1986, died Saturday. He was 81. He is the father of Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer, who was sworn in last month as the new sheriff.

“He was a very big man,” former Kane County sheriff Pat Perez said of George Kramer. “He probably had the biggest hands I had ever seen.

He was a very imposing figure physically. But people didn’t fear him; they respected him.

He had a way of disarming people, just the way he conducted himself.”

Pete Perez, Pat Perez’s father, served as undersheriff during George Kramer’s two terms in office.

A visitation for George Kramer is set for 3 to 8 p.m.

Friday at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31), Batavia, according to Moss’ website. Funeral services will begin with prayers at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Saturday before proceeding to Holy Cross Catholic Church, at 2300 Main St., Batavia, to celebrate Mass at 10 a.m., according to the website.

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell also expressed his condolences.

Judge denies motion 3 hurt after Route 25 crash in Geneva to dismiss Campton Hills election case

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com A Kane County judge Monday denied the Kane County clerk’s motion to dismiss a case involving Campton Hills residents trying to get on the April 7 consolidated election ballot.

Judge David Akemann denied Jack Cunningham’s motion for judgment on the pleadings, which had been submitted and argued

by Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Joe Lulves, the office’s civil division chief.

Akemann also asked that Nicholas Girka, a Campton Hills write-in candidate, and John Strauss, the Campton Hills interim village clerk, be present for the case’s next court date on Thursday.

“Clearly, we need all the players involved in this,” Akemann said Monday during a hearing at the Kane County Courthouse on Third Street in Geneva.

Harry Blecker, a current Campton Hills trustee and candidate for village president, and three trustee hope-

fuls – incumbents Laura Andersen and Sue George and newcomer Michael O’Dwyer – filed court papers Jan. 16, asking a judge to give Cunningham specific orders related to their candidacies.

The requested orders include accepting candidate certification for Blecker, Andersen, George and O’Dwyer as submitted by the village on Jan. 5, deciding whether any primary elections are necessary and advancing the candidates to the April 7 consolidated election for any offices for which a primary election is not required.

Girka on Dec. 24 filed to run as a write-in candidate for village clerk. Akemann on Monday allowed the village’s only other write-in candidate, Steven Galloway, to intervene as a party in the proceedings over Lulves’ objection.

Lulves said the County Clerk’s Office would be ready to proceed with any court orders it receives, but he would have to confer with office officials to discuss the possibility and cost of conducting a primary election in Campton Hills.

“We had to pop a door to get someone out of the vehicle,” he said.

Three ambulance units, two from Batavia and one from St. Charles, also responded to the crash scene, Kriwanek said.

Geneva fire crews cleared the scene by 7:20 p.m., and Geneva police opened up the roadway about 10 minutes after that once the Geneva Public Works Department salted the city’s entire stretch of Route 25, Kriwanek said.

Batavia and St. Charles police departments did not report any significant weather-related crashes in their cities on Monday.

GENEVA – Three people were taken to Delnor Hospital after a multiple car crash Monday afternoon shut down part of Route 25 in Geneva, said Fred Kriwanek, a Geneva Fire Department battalion chief.

Geneva fire crews were dispatched at 5:29 p.m. Monday for the crash, which happened on Route 25 north of Fabyan Windmill and south of Fox Run Drive, Kriwanek said.

Citing HIPPA law, Kriwanek declined to release any information about the nature of the patients’ injuries that were transported. The three patients were from three dif-

ferent vehicles, he said.

Kriwanek said Geneva police were investigating the exact cause of the crash, but he said he noticed the road was slippery after he arrived on scene. The National Weather Service at 4:44 p.m. Monday had issued a freezing rain advisory for the area.

At least two of the cars involved in the crash had left the roadway, and three cars in all were towed from the scene, Kriwanek said. One of the vehicles was a small Pace bus, but the only person inside at the time of the crash was the driver, he said.

“The crash pretty much shut the road down itself,” Kriwanek said. “It was closed down for almost two hours.”

Restaurant Week event to showcase city’s eateries

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A time to eat with wild abandon has arrived in Geneva, where duck confit is on the menu at Atwater’s, Chez Moi has individual quiche and Geneva Ale House has fried pickles and pretzel bread pudding.

These are some of the offerings from 21 restaurants participating in the first Geneva Restaurant Week, continuing this week through Super Bowl Sunday. The restaurants will offer lunch, dinner or both for either $19 or $39 – a dine-on-the-nines concept, said one of the organizers, Michael Olesen, owner of Stockholm’s, 306 W. State St., Geneva.

Olesen credits Laura Rush of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce with coming up with the idea of those two price points to encourage dining at Geneva eateries.

“It’s a 20 percent to 25 percent discount,” Olesen said. “It’s a good value for our guests.”

Olesen and other restauranteurs talked about doing a restaurant week during a meeting after Festival of the Vine, Rush said.

“St. Charles does it, Naperville does it and Chicago does it,” Rush said. “Why not us?”

A committee spearheading the promotion looked at the city’s diverse array of restaurants, Olsen said.

“We wanted to give each one the maximum flexibility in how they wanted to showcase the way they present their food,” Olesen said. “ ‘Dine on the nines’ allows each to do – literally – whatever they want in terms of those price points.”

The organizers changed up how Geneva would do things, compared to other communities that also do a restaurant week, he said.

“A lot of places make you buy tickets in advance. We wanted to make this very guest-friendly,” Olesen said.

Rush said all anyone has to do is show up at one of the 21 restaurants and say, “I want the restaurant week special.”

“You do not have to sign up in advance – just show up and try a few places maybe you’re not used to,” Olesen said.

The event will encourage people to try a restaurant they have not visited before, Rush said.

“We definitely want Geneva people to go,” Rush said. “We are encourag-

By Denise Freese Snow is a blast to play in, but have you ever wondered how it is made? Learn all about snow at the free winter exhibit “The Science of Snow” at the Peck Farm Park Orientation Barn in Geneva through February 28. The exhibit is free and open Monday – Saturday: 10:00 am – 4:30 pm.

The exhibit is made up of photos, text, and 3-D paper snowflakes. Educational videos of and about snow are shown on a loop and there is an indoor igloo for children to experience.

Trish Burns, Manager of Peck Farm Park and her staff did extensive research while creating the exhibit. “We try to make all our winter exhibits educational, hands-on and fun,” said Burns. Visitors will learn about how snow forms, the variety of snowflakes, and the way each snowflake forms. “It is quite interesting, snow does not fall white,

it picks up the light and that is what makes it white”, said Burns. Information about the largest local and national snowstorms is displayed against the wall, giving children the opportunity to see how they measure up as they stand against the wall.

An interactive game teaches visitors how animals adjust to winter. “To add some fun to the exhibit, we created soft snowballs to create an indoor snowball fight for kids and families to participate in.

Plus, as long as there is snow outside, a variety of activities and events are planned for visitors to participate in,” said Burns.

In addition, the newly renovated History Gallery, located inside the Peck Farm Park House is open to visitors. The interactive gallery offers something for all ages, including a short documentary of the Peck’s family’s history and iPads that show the family’s biography. Rush: ‘We hope it’s a success’

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A late delivery and inadequate installation twice postponed the reopening of the Kane County morgue, which is why Coroner Rob Russell said he is hesitant to place a timeframe on the new target date.

But, he said Monday, the facility should be ready next week, on Feb. 6.

“That is my hope, my goal,” Russell said.

The morgue, which is on the Kane County Government Center campus in Geneva, has been closed since mold was found there in June.

The mold – which ultimately was deemed as not toxic

– prompted Russell to temporarily outsource forensic operations to DuPage County, a measure that contributed to his office going over budget last year.

However, a Jan. 6 delivery date for the equipment delayed the reopening to Jan.

15, and that goal was missed because of inadequate installation.

Crews from Mechanical Inc., which has a contract with the county, were assembling the freezer Monday, Russell said, comparing the process to that of putting together a Sauder desk.

“They’ve got all week to do this,” Russell said.

Russell said it will be a relief to have the morgue operational again. But, he stressed, the improvements are a temporary fix.

“We can make do for five years,” Russell said, noting the office will outgrow the facility at some point. “Hopefully, that doesn’t get lost in translation.”

Marie Ebel Clark, a beloved teacher to many, and an inspiration to us, all passed away on January 19th 2015, in Capistrano Beach, California.

Marie lived in St. Charles, Ill until recently when she moved to California (a place she loved and called home). Marie was a teacher in the St. Charles Elementary School District for over 30 years.

Marie loved the children she taught and spoke fondly of her teaching days just as the children she taught speak lovingly about her. Marie “an impeccable dresser” loved to travel, visit museums, go to the symphony, and read in her spare time.

Marie is survived by her son, Glen aka: Chip (Karen) Clark; grandsons, Elijah (Colleen) Clark and Jay Jeskie; great granddaughter, Bridget Clark; sister, Katherine “Kack” Brown; brother, Clarence “Buddy” Ebel; and many nieces and nephews.

Marie will be laid to rest off the Coast of Orange County, California.

Local schools celebrate Catholic Schools Week

BY ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – It didn’t take Holy Cross Catholic School eighth-grader Catheryn Middendorf long to come up with reasons why she enjoys her school.

“I like how friendly the people are,” she said. “The teachers make learning fun.”

Catheryn and other students at Holy Cross Catholic School wrote essays about why they loved the school as part of Catholic Schools Week, which is being celebrated this week.

This year’s theme is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”

On Monday, the school’s eighth-grade students were mentoring to the second-grade students. Catheryn said she works with the younger students once a month.

“I like helping them with their skills, so they can get a better education,” she said.

Second-grade student Meadow Estrada, 8, of North Aurora wrote in her essay about how she likes to learn about God. “I like going to church every day,” Meadow said. “I like the teachers. They are really nice.”

BATAVIA – Before Sunday, Sookie Lehman of Batavia never had tried to knock down bowling pins with a frozen turkey.

The experience proved to be a challenge.

“I needed all four bumpers,” she said, laughing.

Lehman and others participated in Sunday’s Turkey Bowl event at The Range restaurant in downtown Batavia. The event raised money to help fight breast cancer.

“It was definitely fun,” Lehman said. “It’s for a good cause and something different to do.”

Fourteen teams participated in the event, which is in its first year. Organizer Brenda Bertrand said she was pleasantly surprised by the turnout.

“I think it’s a good turnout for the first year,” Bertrand said.

She said she also was thankful temperatures were in the 30s all day.

“You have to keep the turkeys frozen,” Bertrand said.

“The weather was perfect for turkey bowling.”

Dale Evansen of Batavia is a pro at turkey bowling, having done it several times before.

“Keeping warm is the challenge,” he said.

Brisk winds on Sunday made it feel colder than it was.

Fortunately, participants could warm themselves in a heated tent next to the makeshift bowling lanes. Evansen said the event is “a good time.”

“This is fun,” he said.

“What’s better than throwing a frozen turkey?”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Threeyear-old Elena Hamilton pitched artificial snowballs at holes where a wooden snowman’s buttons should be, while her parents, Eric and Amanda Hamilton of Campton Hills, stood by and encouraged her.

Then Eric Hamilton tried with a real snowball, packing a nice round one and, pitching it with a quick underhand throw, smacked it right through one of the snowman’s buttonholes.

Corron Farm’s Winter Wonders event Saturday drew about 70 people, including the Hamiltons.

“It’s just nice to come ... to support what they are trying to do here,” Amanda Hamilton said. “And it’s a beautiful day to be outside in winter.”

ton Township and Campton Township Parks and Open Space, hosted a day of outside winter activities as a fundraiser for replacing the roof on its barn, which was built in 1835, organizers said.

Volunteer Carol Stolte, who is part of the village of Campton Hills’ community relations committee, was in charge of the snowball toss, encouraging families, such as the Hamiltons, to give it a go. Organizers came prepared with 25 artificial snowballs in case there wasn’t enough snow for real snowballs.

Winter Wonders also included a wagon ride, woods walk, making s’mores and learning about snowshoeing, among other activities,

attracting a steady stream of local families.

Justin and Katlyn Eggar of Campton Hills brought their 9-month-old baby, Karys, who was bundled up in a carrier held close to her father’s chest. Justin Eggar said his mother invited them.

“We walk out here a lot, so we wanted to come and support the cause,” Justin Eggar said, as he and his wife prepared to have some coffee from Luau Coffee – a shop in Campton Hills – in the warming shed.

“We love Luau Coffee,” he said.

Dona Eggar, his mother, also of Campton Hills, was taking a break in the warming shed.

“I love the open space,” Dona Eggar said, praising Campton Township for buying the Corron Farm property in order to preserve it. “I take walks here all summer. This is the first time I’ve come in winter.”

How can we best prepare our students for the next stage in their education, or careers? Most of my input was directed by discussions I had with business owners and the quality of interns and “newbies” that are in the workforce now. Many employers are concerned about work ethic. They are experiencing a drop in ontime and motivated staff.

Many manufacturers have been struggling with finding blue collar employees.

When I bring this up in mixed company, the conversation typically revolves around the suburbia mentality of parents wanting their kids to be doctors and lawyers. How do we redirect that focus?

Let’s consider the fact that manufacturing in the United States has had its ups and downs, but it is here to stay. So, how do we fill the shifts at those work stations in the industrial park? Let’s work from the top down. Do

Yes. Does the high school offer vocational programs that fit the trades that are in demand? They are working on it; many are available, but enrollment is down.

When adolescents are preparing for high school, how do the parents react when they say they want to take a vocational class instead of an AP class? It depends on the household, but I have a sense that the parents are pushing the AP class.

My gut tells me that the problem lies in our society.

So, let’s broaden the conversation.

Let’s ask our kids what they have a passion for and how can we guide them to the right path. Do we want our kids to go to college, get a degree, incur – on average – a $33,000 loan and not have a sensible career path when they graduate? Oh, and don’t

forget, they will probably need to move back home.

Just consider that manufacturing is skilled labor. CNC operators need trig-level math skills to succeed. Pretty impressive.

I think back to my grandfather and father, who both retired from Chrysler Corp. and were always able to put food on the table, take family vacations and never paid a student loan.

My brother and I were the first generation to graduate from college. I now have two boys of my own, 5 and 9 years old.

One wants to be a monster truck driver, and one

wants to be a drummer.

Neither of those seem realistic to me. But, who knows?

When the time comes, and they are selecting classes for their freshman years at Batavia High School, I promise I will look to the back of the student handbook for the vocational classes. Are you with me?

There are several factors that impact the success of a business – quality of product, quality of service, the business plan, growth strategy and the list goes on and on. Unprepared THE WASHINGTON POST More than 13 years after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, in a world still menaced by terrorists and in a city at risk of attack as few others, how is it possible that basic radio communications used by the District of Columbia’s first responders could fail in an emergency?

How could the district’s transit system be unprepared to ventilate smoke from a subway tunnel?

What other lapses in preparedness will the region’s residents discover, and will it take an emergency to discover them?

Those questions arise from the Jan. 12 tragedy in which smoke from an electrical meltdown filled a six-car Yellow Line train in a tunnel near Metro’s L’Enfant Plaza station, leaving one woman dead and more than 80 passengers requiring hospitalization.

Among the lessons of 9/11 was the peril posed by lack of coordination among the agencies that might be called upon to prevent and respond to an emergency. Yet now it appears that even in managing a tool as basic to emergency response as radio communications, the right and left hands of those entrusted to ensure safety in subway tunnels were strangers.

According to Metro’s acting general manager, Jack Requa, the fire department had failed to inform Metro when it encrypted firefighters’ radios. The result, he said, was that the radios, unsynched to Metro’s tunnel relaying equipment, were all but useless, and firefighters below ground could not communicate with commanders above ground.

D.C. officials, for their part, dispute that explanation of the communications failure, saying the encryption issue is a canard and that the fault lies squarely with Metro, which had failed to fix problems of which it had been informed.

As if the finger-pointing weren’t sufficiently groan-worthy, what seems clear is that all involved already aware were that the radios were not functioning, owing to an incident five days earlier, in which firefighters responding to a debris fire, also near L’Enfant Plaza, discovered something was amiss.

It took a week for Metro and the fire department to unravel the problem, by which time the tunnel smoke disaster had taken place.

The District of Columbia’s homeland security agency, in a report released late Friday, put its finger on the real problem – namely, that the city remains at risk of “larger, more complicated incidents to occur in the future, where agency roles and responsibilities may be stressed in more challenging ways.”

Translation: What will it take to ensure that Metro and other major public agencies (including the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority) are truly prepared to coordinate with local police, firefighters and other first-responders in the event of an even more dire emergency?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR GAMBLING IS A NIGHTMARE To the Editor: The following is in response to a letter to the editor written by Michael Gelatka, president of the Illinois Gaming Machine Operators Association, and Kevin Gelatka of G3 Gaming that ran Jan. 9 in the Kane County Chronicle.

Let’s start with calling it what it is – “gambling.” “Gaming” is classier, sexier, smacks of family fun, but no mistaking, the raw term is gambling, which is what I will use here.

I may have heard “Happy Days Are Here Again” crooning in the background as the Gelatkas regurgitated statistics as the antidote for Illinois’ budgetary woes, a regular economic panacea. One only needs to look at Atlantic City, where reckless gambling saturation resulted in massive socioeconomic and ethical fallout to communities, businesses and fam-

ilies. Local businesses fail, or some report a 30 percent to 50 percent decrease in sales, when money is forfeited to gambling venues, as opposed to stimulating the economy. Child welfare agencies report increases in child neglect and endangerment in the form of decreased household funds, to abandoning children at home or in parking lots to go gamble. Not far behind is increased bankruptcy, homelessness, crime and suicide.

I have statistics, too, and at the end of those numbers are decimated lives. Please ask yourself, in what world is it acceptable that for any industry to win, its patrons must lose? This industry, which our government not only promotes but encourages, has built a public policy around inducing residents to gamble away their hard-earned money to fund their coffers. Does that not seem like a glaring and dishonest juxtaposition?

The argument for job creation is certainly valid. However, consider at last report there were roughly 7,000 employees in Illinois gambling, a small number proportionally to those negatively affected by this industry. Thousands of jobs were lost when Atlantic City casinos imploded! It’s only the beginning.

Gelatkas, you say video gambling is strictly regulated by the Illinois Gaming Board, yet they can’t find a way to protect the now nearly 12,000 individuals on the self-exclusion list from the 4,600 venues available for them to now fail, a list certainly to exponentially grow with gambling permeation.

Gambling is a nightmare, sold as a fantasy with broken promises all around. It’s only a matter of time.

Versatile junior boosts Warriors Netzley, who played at Haines, leads team with 16.8 points a game

EST CHICAGO – Jamie Netzley missed two weeks of Wheaton Academy girls basketball last season when her chronic back trouble resurfaced.

She returned feeling invigorated and proved equally effective in the next girls soccer season. That didn’t mean Netzley was content.

“It’s good for my body,” she said, “but I don’t like taking breaks.”

A South Elgin resident living in District 303, Netzley grew up loving many sports. Because the junior can’t envision a day where that won’t be the case, she happily presses on as the Warriors’ point guard and center midfielder, fatigue be darned.

“It’s great, especially the two sports being basketball and soccer,” Netzley said. “Because soccer is constant running, no breaks in the game. So that helps me in the offseason, staying in shape, doing both club soccer and basketball. And also doing soccer here and basketball here.”

“Here” refers to Wheaton Academy, where Netzley entered Monday as the Warriors’ leading scorer at 16.8 points a game.

That average is more than twice that of Netzley’s nearest teammate, Elizabeth Melby (8.3 points a game). For that reason, the Warriors hardly mind that Netzley often spends more time with athletic trainer Nicole Medieros than anyone else on coach Beth Mitchell’s team.

Netzley might need a few extra moments to get loose before practice, but that element seems to disappear during games. She’s shooting 40 percent from the floor overall – including 51 percent from inside the 3-point arc – helping Wheaton Academy to an 11-5 record.

“She’s a great player,” Warriors senior forward Christina Garrison said.

“She’s been working really hard. Just her ability to score is very great, and we appreciate her on our team, especially this year.”

Netzley has started at point guard since her freshman year, boosting her scoring average from 6.8 in 2012-13 to 9.9 last season ahead of her current breakout campaign.

As a junior, she has finished in double figures in all but one of the Warriors’ 16 games, matching a career high with 30 points in a 44-42 win at Lisle in December.

ble-drive offense, which increases Netzley’s vulnerability to contact. If she does get tangled up, Netzley usually rises to her feet with a grin.

“It takes a toll on her body,” Warriors assistant coach Jen Lee said, “but at the same time, she’s so good and takes care of herself.”

Considering her commitments to Campton United club soccer and Illinois Hoop Dreams AAU basketball once her respective high school seasons end, It’s fair to wonder when Netzley might sit still.

She recently took a break from the court – well, running around it, anyway – while watching the host St. Charles

North girls defeat St. Charles East earlier this month.

Although she was home-schooled after fifth grade, Netzley still competed for Haines Middle School, where North Stars assistant Jeff Otterby was her eighth-grade coach. She knows several student athletes from both St. Charles high schools through club sports, and would have attended North had she not selected private school.

Upon entering Wheaton Academy, Netzley befriended St. Charles resident Abby Olson, an eventual basketball and soccer teammate and carpool companion. Olson graduated in 2014, but the two remain close.

“Being a freshman, I was, of course, scared of everyone,” Netzley said, “but then playing both sports with her, I really warmed up to her.”

Netzley and several Warriors describe this year’s team as the closest group they’ve been a part of at any level.

Mitchell has helped foster that atmosphere by selecting four captains – Heidi Engebretsen, Garrison, Melby and Netzley – and stressing the ability “to serve others but also be able to be served,” Netzley said.

In recent weeks, Mitchell incorporated yoga and kickboxing with weight training as alternate workouts to basketball. Turns out they’re equally taxing.

Said Netzley, in an all-too-familiar refrain: “I was sweating at the end of it.

That’s for sure.”

Jake Hlava made four tackles in his first game at Northern Illinois’ Huskie Stadium in DeKalb 14 months ago.

On Sunday, he eagerly took the next step toward padding those stats.

A Batavia senior linebacker and the Kane County Chronicle’s 2014 Football Player of the Year, Hlava has committed to NIU as a preferred walk-on, returning to the site of the Bulldogs’ Class 6A state championship victory in 2013.

“That is kind of where it all started,” Hlava said, “so that’s pretty cool.”

Although he was a contributor to a deep Batavia ‘D’ during the state title season, Hlava emerged as an impact player as a senior.

His 13½ sacks in 2014 estab-

lished a new program record, as Hlava charged in on blitzes about 50 percent of the time, according to defensive coordinator Matt Holm’s estimation.

The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Hlava also weighed a scholarship offer from Western Illinois and visited a handful of other schools, but ultimately embraced the consistent attention from NIU, a perennial power in the Mid-American Conference, that started last spring.

“One thing I liked about NIU was they recruited me from the start,” Hlava said, “whether it was a scholarship or not. …

They always recruited me from the start, they always showed interest in me, even when their spots filled up.

“Really, it was just a factor of it just felt right. When I was there, I just didn’t want to leave this place. All the people, the coaches were great. The players

He has maintained a diligent workout schedule since the Bulldogs’ season ended in November, shuttling between the Batavia weight room and Batavia-based Pro Force Sports Performance Training.

“It’s all been a grind,” Hlava said. “I’ve really been pushing myself more than ever before, because college is going to be such a big jump.”

Hlava’s commitment capped a busy recruiting weekend for Batavia. Senior offensive lineman Mitch Krusz ensured he’d be a Bulldog for a few more years by committing Saturday to Football Championship Subdivision program Butler.

Krusz, also a standout wrestler who’s 21-2 at 285 pounds, helped the football team to a fourth straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division title.

Geneva senior defensive end Matt Loberg announced his commitment to Butler on Monday.

East swimmers channel learning experiences QUICK READ Kevin Druley St. Charles East junior boys swimmer John Tarpey counted two separate youth movements afoot at the Norris Center last week.

First, there was the legion of St. Charles Swim Team club athletes filing in for practice under dramatic circumstances, the conclusion of the Saints’ 93-93 tie against St. Charles North on Jan. 20.

That result – the first tie among the schools in 15 dual meetings but also East’s second nondefeat – roused the Saints’ underclassmen, too.

“These younger guys, they see how close we are and that there’s just a little bit more that we need to get there,” Tarpey said. “Just one good swim away.”

If the Saints and North Stars had their druthers, officials would have given in to athletes’ chants of “ONE-MAN SWIM-OFF!” immediately after North’s victory in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay.

In any event, East realizes there’s plenty to absorb from this dual and others before it meets North again at the Upstate Eight Conference meet at Waubonsie Valley in two weekends.

The teams also will vie for sectional supremacy when East hosts a 10-team field Feb. 21.

“I personally think the key is we have to take what we learn here at these meets – and we’ve had a lot – so that’s a lot of racing experience in just a few days – and we also have to apply that into our practice,” Tarpey said.

“So we take what we’ve learned here, we go, and we have to hit it hard the next morning or the next afternoon or whatever time we have until our next meet and just hope we can get it down by sectionals here.”

Pool play: East and North hosted separate boys swimming duals Thursday.

The competition proved anything but equal.

North defeated the Elgin/ Larkin co-op, 136-50, while East fell to Metea Valley, 106-80.

With the Mustangs set to

leave the UEC for the DuPage Valley Conference next school year along with established powers Waubonsie Valley and Neuqua Valley, such results as the former could be common as the league transitions.

“Aquaticswise, the conference shift is going to cause both East and us to have to really search outside of the conference for meets to Rob compete as well Rooney as really help this conference grow,” North Stars coach Rob Rooney said.

The West Chicago/Batavia co-op continues to emerge while producing collegiate swimmers – including 2014 Batavia graduate Karsten Cook (Valparaiso) – and there’s also budding interest in the sport at Geneva.

West Aurora and Glenbard East, UEC newcomers in 201415, both offer boys and girls swimming, but don’t quite provide the litmus test of facing “the Valleys” yet.

“Traditionally, it’s been a really strong swimming conference,” Rooney said.

“Hopefully, we can help those other schools grow. The coaches have been extremely eager to learn, so we’ll see what happens.”

Eyes on Geneva: New Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek and Arizona Diamondbacks executives Bob Gephard and Mike Bell will Mark be among those Grudzielanek on hand at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark Friday as the Cougars host a “Meet the Diamondbacks” hot stove event.

The 2015 season marks the Cougars’ 25th in Geneva as well as the inaugural campaign of a two-year player-development contract with Arizona. Gebhard, a club vice president/special assistant to the general manager and Bell, Arizona’s farm director, met with Cougars’ brass in September when the Cougars ended a PDC relationship with the Cubs.

Despite his ties to the Midwest and Chicago, Grudzielanek, a Milwaukee native and Cubs second baseman from 2003-’04, represents the new-

comer to the equation. He’s in his first season as a manager at any level, having successfully networked at December’s baseball winter meetings in his hometown of San Diego.

“I’m looking forward to being on the same page with these guys, making sure we understand everything and just have a good collective partnership where we get things done,” Grudzielanek said. “Set up schedules and things like that. Just to kind of get a handle, get a little more comfortable.

“Because I’ve got just so many thoughts going around in my head about things. I’m very organized and try to be right on the money with everything, times and things like that.”

Friday’s event, which features a question and answer session and all you can eat buffet, starts at 6 p.m. and is expected to conclude by 9.

The Saints did just that during the Upstate Eight Conference tournament at Geneva, rebounding from a regular-season dual loss to UEC River champ Batavia to earn their fourth straight conference team crown.

Seniors Keone Derain (152 pounds) and Ramon Lopez (170), now part of three championship teams, captured individual titles as Keone East cemented Derain 10 top-five finishes in all.

Carvings of birds, especially ducks and other wild species, are collected by those who consider the best examples to be art, while other examples are to be used as decoys when hunting. While both types of decoys can be found at antiques auctions and shops, most are sold in auctions or shows that specialize in decoys, wood carvings and related pieces. The best of the 20th- and 21st-century carvers are famous, and collectors can name the most talented. A stone carver named Charles H. Hart (1862-1960) hunted and made decoys for his brother and friends. At first Hart specialized in just a few species, including black ducks, Canada Geese, goldeneyes and mallards. About 1900, he started making a stick-up black duck that had detached wings that flap and a head that could be turned.

Hart was soon selling his birds to stores in Boston. In the 1930s, when the country was fascinated by the explorations in Antarctica, he began carving penguins. Most had applied flippers and color showing at the neck of the black and white birds. He made them in all sizes from about 6 inches to 4 feet high. Today, because of the movies “Happy Feet” and “Madagascar” featuring penguins, there is renewed interest in the penguins and the work by Charles Hart.

The 8-inch-high birds have been auctioning for $400 to $750. *** Q: I bought a secondhand Ethan Allen drop-leaf side table back in

1967. It’s still in very good condition. It’s maple and in a typical Early American style. It’s marked “Ethan Allen” and “Baumritter.” Why Baumritter? And what is the table worth?

A: The furniture company we know as Ethan Allen was founded in 1932 as Baumritter Corp. The owners were Theodore Baumritter and his brother-in-law, Nathan S. Ancell.

The company, based in New York City, made and sold housewares and decorative items the first few years. It didn’t start manufacturing and selling furniture until 1939, three years after the partners bought a closed furniture factory in Beecher Falls, Vermont. The company named its Early American line of furniture “Ethan Allen” after the Revolutionary War hero from Vermont. The company’s name was changed from Baumritter Corp. to Ethan Allen Industries in 1972. Your table is an early one if it’s marked “Baumritter,” but it’s not an antique. Still, the table is well-made and solid and could sell for $100 to $250. *** Q: I have a gasoline ration card from July 10, 1942, that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. It has a large capital letter “A” and the words “Basic Gasoline Ration, United States of America, Office of Price Administration” on the top. My grandmother’s name and address and the make, model and date of her car are written in ink. Is this worth anything or just a piece of the past?

A: During World War II, gasoline, tires, sugar, meat, shoes and other items were rationed. Gasoline rationing began in 1942 and lasted until World War II ended in August

1945. Gas rationing was meant to reduce driving so the supply of rubber and gas could be used for military needs. The car owner received a ration book with coupons that had to be redeemed when buying the gas. A sticker with the appropriate letter was displayed on the car’s windshield. Most people were issued the “A” sticker and card, which allowed three or four gallons of gas a week. People working in the war effort who needed to drive to work were allowed up to 8 gallons a week and had a “B” card. “C” was for doctors, nurses, ministers, mail delivery, farm workers, construction workers, and several other groups, “E” for emergency vehicles, “R” for non-highway farm vehicles, “T” for truckers, and “X” for members of Congress and other special groups.

A: Phoebe Stabler (1879-1955) was an English sculptor best known for her pottery figures. She also made figures in bronze and stone.

Bronze figures made by Stabler have sold for over $1,000 at auction. A 13-inch bronze Madonna and child with John the Baptist, made by Stabler in 1907, sold for $3,686 in 2012. * ** Q: I have a pewter chick and cracked eggshell figural napkin holder that’s been in our family well over 80 years. Can you tell me who made it and its value?

A: Napkin rings were fashionable from 1869 to about 1900. Most were made of silver plate, though sterling silver, porcelain, glass, wood and other materials were also used.

Silver-plated figural napkin rings are popular with collectors today. Several companies, including Derby Silver Co., made figural chick and egg napkin rings. Most figural rings with silver plating in good condition sell for $100 to $300. ** * Tip: It can be hard to thread a needle, especially with the old pure cotton thread that should be used for repairing old fabric. So what should you do? If you’re the “average person” in the United States, you should reduce your daily sodium intake. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the average person consumes 3,436 milligrams of sodium each day.

In contrast, the CDC recommends that no one consume more than 2,300 milligrams (about a teaspoon of salt) per day.

However, if you are 51 years of age or older, or if you are an African-American of any age, or if you have high blood pressure or diabetes or kidney disease, you

should consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day. That covers the majority of adults in the U.S. Start by paying attention to how much sodium is in the foods you eat. You can find this information on food labels. (I’ve put a table showing the top 10 food sources of sodium in the American diet on my website, AskDoctorK.com. Avoid these foods, or at least go light on them.)

Watch out for hidden sodium, too. Some foods that are high in sodium may not taste especially salty. Examples include breakfast cereals, bakery muffins, energy and sports drinks.

Also pay attention to potassium. In contrast to sodium, more potassium in your diet helps keep blood pressure in check.

Many fruits and vegetables, like bananas, oranges and grapefruit, are naturally low in sodium and are good sources of potassium.

The CDC recommends that people consume 4,700 milligrams of potassium each day from food (not supplements).

Dr. Wallace: I always enjoy reading your advice to teens, and it is always sound and helpful and I have even used your expert advice several times myself.

But I do disagree with your opinion that alcohol is evil. It isn’t the alcohol that is evil, but those people who abuse the alcohol that are evil. I also feel that lawmakers must think that something magic happens at midnight on the eve of a person’s 21st birthday. It doesn’t seem fair that those under the age of 21 watch those 21 and older enjoy an alcoholic drink, but can’t have one themselves.

I’m 19 and have been consuming alcohol responsibly for two years.

I drive myself to parties and I usually have a drink, but no more than two, and then drive myself home. I’ve never had a problem driving after drinking responsibly, but I hate to hear people talking about “don’t drink and drive”!

Alcohol also has an effect on the driver’s vision and even one drink can alter depth perception.

At the bridge table, defenders should do a lot of high and low to win style and scorecard points.

When defenders use normal signals and discards, an unnecessarily high card is encouraging and the lowest card is discouraging.

But when leading a suit, the opposite applies. A low card from length guarantees at least one honor in the suit and announces a desire to try to win tricks in that suit. But with a weak suit, one leads high.

How do those agreements apply in this deal? South is in three no-trump, and West is on lead.

A reliable rule is never to play in two no-trump with a long suit opposite some fit. Either get into the suit at the three-level (if possible) or go for three no-trump.

West leads the spade five.

Declarer takes East’s 10 with his king and plays a club. What should West do now?

South is marked with the spade queen, and almost certainly East would have raised spades with four-card support. So West needs to get East on lead for a spade return through declarer.

The only hope, despite South’s bid in the suit, is the diamond ace. West should shift to that suit and must lead the nine, his highest card denying interest in that suit. (See tomorrow’s column for the antithesis of this.)

East wins with his ace and leads his spade seven, top of a remaining doubleton. Now the contract goes down two.
