CHARLES – The University of Illinois Extension and Home and Community Education will be offering the workshop “Grandparents Have an Important Role in a Child’s Life” from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Feb. 4 at 535 S. Extremely cold weather cancels school Kaneland first in area to cancel school; St. Charles School District 303 cancels after-school activities

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com School is off for today at all public schools, and at Kaneland School District 302, district officials suggested that families should make childcare plans for Tuesday, as well.

The Kaneland district was the first in the area to call off school because of the extremely cold weather that is forecast for today and Tuesday.

Geneva School District 304

also has called off school for today. Batavia School District 101 also will have no school on today, the district announced on its website. It said no decision had been made yet for Tuesday.

In St. Charles School District 303, it was noted that schools would be closed because of weather conditions and that all after-school activities would be canceled.

Schools in Central School District 301 will be closed.

Rosary and Marmion high

schools will not have school today.

Faith Christian School in Geneva is called off for today, as is Immanuel Lutheran School in Batavia. Holy Cross Catholic School in Batavia is closed today, and its message indicated that Friday would now be a full day of school.

The temperature was expected to dip below zero late Sunday, with a low of 6 below zero, according to the National Weather Service. It then is not expected to go back above

zero until Wednesday.

Today, a high of 4 below zero is forecast, with wind chills as low as 29 below zero.

The forecast low for tonight is 22 below zero, with wind chills as low as 38 below zero.

Tuesday promises more of the same, with a high of 4 below zero and a low of 12 below zero.

Kaneland officials sent out an email to parents and posted a notice on its website – www. kaneland.org – stating that its schools, as well as the Fox

Valley Career Center, would be closed today “because of the severe weather conditions predicted for the morning and throughout the day.”

The school board meeting set for today also was canceled.

Regarding Tuesday, the district said “families are advised that it may be necessary to make child-care plans for that day, as well,” though a decision about whether school would be open on Tuesday isn’t expected until today.

Students showing off their skills at ‘Disaster Blaster’

By CHARLES MENCHACA editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – About 75 students and their parents gathered at Fermilab on Saturday to show off miniature versions of some epic events.

The students, ages 6 through 9, formed 15 teams to participate in the second annual Batavia Junior First Lego League Open House. For the 2013-14 theme of “Disaster Blaster,” teams explored natural disasters and used Legos and motorized parts to display the effects that a disaster can have on communities.

The natural disaster theme resonated further with the students when one of their weekly meetings was canceled in October because of inclement weather, said Dee Karabowicz, open house organizer and operator of the firstthrough third-grade divisions of Fox Valley Robotics.

“I think disasters really thrill people – learning about them is very interesting,” Karabowicz said. “This topic … is a real-world topic for them.”

Each team was allowed one disaster to focus on and whether team members wanted to portray it before, during or after its presence in a community. Most students, such as Nathan Kilmer, 9, chose to portray a natural disaster in

Kilmer, a third-grader at Heartland Elementary School in Geneva, explained for his Mass Destruction team how they used one motor to move a tornado made of black Legos toward a house and another motor to move the house off its foundation to represent the

tornado’s force.

Kilmer liked this year’s theme better than last year because he said it involved more mechanics.

“I like how we always work together and always make something that’s pretty good,” Kilmer said.

board and presentation were the result of about 32 hours of teamwork on Sundays from September 2013 to this month.

The Masters of Disasters team worked a similar schedule to complete their volcano.

The Masters team used bright red Legos pieces to represent the melted liquid rock known as magma. Then magma is called lava when it rises to the surface, said Hannah Kraus, 8, a second-grader at Munhall Elementary School

in St. Charles.

While some of her teammates were undecided about another year in junior robotics, Kraus plans to continue participating.

“I’m into Legos and building stuff,” Hannah said. “We have a whole Lego table that we use at home.”

The students will continue to show off their creations through February at a few more open houses, Karabowicz said.

Bingo fun at Lions Club party Clubs throughout the region take part in Ski for Sight event

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – After hearing “N-42” called out during a bingo session Sunday at the Elburn Lions Club, Sheila Vleck pressed her fingers down a row on her special plastic “Braille” game card. When she reached the final number on the row, she recognized it as 42 and placed a bingo chip on top.

Bingo in Elburn was one of the final stops of a weekend-long festival called Ski for Sight, in which participants enjoyed a party in Sycamore on Friday night, outdoor activities in Shabbona on Saturday, a banquet and dancing in DeKalb on Saturday night, and then a choice of bowling in Sycamore or bingo in Elburn on Sunday. Elburn then hosted a lunch to close the event.

It was the 32nd year the event had taken place. In Elburn, Chris Halsey, the first vice district governor for Elburn’s region, called out numbers for game after game as participants played on their

special cards, with help from the young members of the Elgin Leo and Junior Leo clubs.

Vleck sat at a table near the back, helped by Junior Leo member Aubrey Broz, who did everything from serving drinks to pointing out numbers to helping to take out Vleck’s service dog, Rhea.

Vleck said she enjoyed playing bingo at the event each year – something she has done for 15 years – but she said she could not see herself playing bingo on a regular basis.

“I couldn’t do this,” she said, smiling. “I couldn’t take the pressure. I do this for fun.”

Some at the event showed emotion when they won. Andre Williams, who won the first game, was clapping and celebrating with Elburn Leo Club member Zach Strayve.

Others enthusiastically shouted out “bingo” when they won, and then collected a small cash prize.

Marty Hutchings sat at Vleck’s table. He said he participated in the cross country skiing, and that some went hiking on Saturday, as well.

He said it was a good time, and

that he had been coming to the event since 1995. Carolynn Werline, from the DeKalb Lions Evening Club, said she has heard that Ski for Sight is the highlight of the year for many participants.

Werline said it was a good weekend for the event, since there was plenty of snow.

“This is good weather,” she said. “There are weekends when we should have called it ‘Hike for Sight.’ ” Cheryl Lee, of the Elburn Lions Club, said she has been helping to run the Elburn stage of Ski for Sight for about nine years. She praised the involvement of the younger members, saying it was “a good thing for them” to help out.

Werline said people come from regions such as Chicago and Rockford, helping the Lions Club fulfill its devotion to helping visually impaired individuals. She said that devotion comes from a 1925 speech, available at www.lionsclubs. org, in which Helen Keller appealed to the Lions for help.

“Are you going to say no to Helen Keller?” Werline said.

Zonta Club offering scholarships The Zonta Club of St. Charles-Geneva-Batavia offers a scholarship to enable girls who complete the sixth grade in June 2014 to explore the world of mathematics and science and their importance in many career fields.

The scholarship covers a one-week session held in July 2014. Math and Science Camp will be at a local university.

Applicants must have permanent family residence for 12 months before the application deadline within the following school districts:

ST. CHARLES – Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley will host a program on U.S. citizenship from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles. Maureen E. Kelly, an immigration attorney, and Beatriz Rosa, who is Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley’s student liaison and teaches citizenship classes for World Relief in Aurora, will host the event.

Attendees will have an opportunity to talk individually with the hosts before and after their presentation on U.S. citizenship.

Saints just ‘getting better and better’ St. Charles East captures six individual titles en route to team championship

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com ELGIN – Elgin High School sold discounted mattresses in its foyer Saturday, a fundraiser that tempted some wrestlers competing for Upstate Eight Conference titles in adjacent Chesbrough Fieldhouse.

“Over the break, I was going to go to the mattress and take a little nap,” St. Charles East senior 138-pounder Isaiah Vela said, “but …”

It was probably best Vela didn’t give in. After winning the UEC team title behind six individual champions, the Saints aren’t nearly ready to rest with next month’s state series on deck.

“Wrestling is kind of like a roller coaster; there’s highs and lows,” East 145-pounder Jake Mende said. “At the end of the year, we’re always trying to peak, and I feel like this is the first step in that. And I feel like from now on, we should be getting better and better, so that’s our goal.”

Anthony Rubino (113), Ryan Valesh (132), Keone Derain (152) and Ramon Lopez (160) joined Mende and Vela atop their respective podiums.

Lopez scored his title with a fall, while the rest of his teammates earned decisions.

Batavia (Connor McKeehan, 220) and St. Charles North (Kolbe O’Brien, 106) also produced champions.

Batavia’s Noah Frazier was second at 195.

The Bulldogs finished fourth out of 14 teams, but collected their first accolade earlier in the day when McKeehan – who notched his first career tournament win – was named the event’s Ed Washington Sportsmanship Award winner.

“That was really neat, you know. It’s another one of those things that just reminds me of why I do the sport,” McKeehan said. “It’s a grueling sport, you know. You go through periods of time where it’s like, ‘Why am I doing this?

Why am I here?’ Winning that award and then finally winning a varsity tournament, those are two big reminders of, ‘This is why I wrestle. This is why I do this sport. This is why I stuck with it. This is why I’m still around.’ ” O’Brien, 30-5 in his debut season, continued a strong run with a fall and two tight decisions in his tournament bouts.

“I’m confident with what I’m doing,” he said. “The new coach [Ben Hummel] has helped, and it’s competitive in practice.”

Geneva’s top finisher was runner-up Mike Huck, who challenged Mende for the third time since last season’s conference meet but suffered his third loss in that span, a 4-3 decision.

Mende won, 2-0, when East defeated Geneva in mid-December as part of its second consecutive UEC River duals sweep.

“I thought Mende controlled the pace of the dual meet, and I thought Huck controlled the pace of this meet,” Vikings coach Tom Chernich said. “A good match.”

At 160, Batavia’s Jake Birkhaug encountered an even more immediate case of déjà vu, having just defeated Streamwood’s Darell James – his opponent in the fifth-place match – 1-0 last week.

Birkhaug scored a 6-0 decision this time despite a tender right shoulder he aggravated Friday.

“My right arm doesn’t have the strength it usually does,” Birkhaug said. “I was

able to bait him into shooting instead of shooting myself, so that was able to offset some of that.”

A little while later, McKeehan escaped being pinned to his own shoulders when he sprawled instinctually off his back and on top of Neuqua Valley’s D.J. Warkenthien late in the bout.

McKeehan insisted he didn’t know the score entering the third period – it was 6-4, Warkenthien – and sounded like he was of similar mind in assessing his path to a fall in 5:40.

“It’s one of those things where I’m not really sure if I did that as much as the wrestling side of me just kind of took over, and there it went,” McKeehan said. “I caught him in a funky place and I didn’t

even think I’d be able to keep him there, and then I ended up pinning him. I don’t know.

That was just, ‘Wow.’ ” Several East fans showed their own excitement over a banner day in which nearly half the team captured one of 14 conference titles.

Plenty of smiles and pictures went around, but the Saints still were telling themselves they wanted the same scene in Champaign (individual state tournament) and, ideally, Bloomington (dual team state).

“We’re looking pretty strong as of today,” Vela said.

“Hopefully, we come out on top.”

After that, lying down will be acceptable. The Saints will probably want the nearest mattress, anyway.

East coach Lori Drumtra said she was pleased with her team’s effort, especially in the absence of standout point guard Amanda Hilton, recently lost for the season with a knee injury.

“It’s taken us awhile to [learn to] play without Amanda, but I think, especially Katie [Claussner] has really started to take over that spot,” Drumtra said. “And Kyra’s playing better. I mean, I don’t take those two off the floor.”

Claussner, a speedy 5-5 junior guard, slashed her way to 13 points on the night.

Switching from a zone to a man-to-man defense, the Vikings did a better job containing her in the second half. The Saints, on the other hand, had no answer for Seberger, who got open against both zone and man looks. She scored from the right baseline at the start of the fourth quarter, then knocked in a 3-pointer from the wing with under three minutes to play to give Geneva its largest lead at 60-50.

Seberger said the Vikings are looking to close out the regular season in strong fashion with an eye toward an extended postseason run.

“We just want to keep working together and get everyone on the same page to help us get through February and maybe into March,” she said.

On Saturday, North will conduct a “Lift-a-thon” fundraiser, with the goal being to raise funds to buy new equipment. Football coach Rob Pomazak and North’s boosters are among the ringleaders of the project.

Kaneland finishes sixth at conference meet KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE STERLING – Kaneland senior 285-pound wrestler Justin Diddell capped a solid week with a Northern Illinois Big 12 championship Saturday.

Diddell, who committed to the Indiana State football program earlier in the week, scored the Knights’ top finish

and earned falls in each of his three matches, including a win in 3:21 against DeKalb’s Alex Roach in the title bout.

“Justin had an awesome tournament,” Knights coach Monty Jahns said. “He’s moving much better. He’s moving his feet, he’s using his hands and he’s taking his opportunities when he gets them.”

Kaneland finished sixth in the 12-team race, 2.5 points ahead of host Sterling.

Austin Parks placed third at 160, Matthew Redman was fourth at 126 and Adam Mish took fifth at 113.

“It’s respectable for us,” Jahns said. “We ended up probably where we thought we’d be.”

ST. CHARLES – It was going to take more than a cut right hand to slow down Morgan Seberger on Saturday night.

The Geneva senior poured in 20 points to lead the Vikings to a 63-56 victory against St. Charles East in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division girls basketball battle.

Seberger said she injured her shooting hand early in the second quarter.

“It got a little cut and it kept bleeding,” she said. “First, they had like this weird little bandage on it and at halftime I got it wrapped up. I had to go shoot [before the start of the third quarter] to make sure it felt right.”

Geneva (15-5, 6-2 UEC River) needed Seberger’s hot hand to stave off a determined effort by the Saints (10-13, 3-6), who benefited from some pretty torrid shooting of their own from the likes of Kyra Washington (16 points) and Chloe John (10).

Washington, a 6-foot-1 junior, buried a 3-pointer from the left side with three minutes left in the first quarter to give East its largest lead of the night, 14-6.

“Washington had a nice game,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said. “They just work hard. They’re just a scrappy team. I told the kids, ‘This is a team that can outwork you if you let them.’ And

they showed that they could do that.”

The Vikings responded to the eight-point deficit with a 9-0 run, capped by five straight points from Seberger on a steal and layup and a trey from right of the key. Seberger connected from 15 feet with six seconds left in the quarter to put Geneva ahead, 17-16.

The Vikings still were up by one at the half, 29-28, but Washington sank a 3 from the top of the key at the start of the third quarter to put Morgan the Saints back Seberger in front.

Sidney Santos scored from beyond the arc a short time later to finally put Geneva in front to stay. Santos, a 6-1 senior, scored all nine of her points in the second half and the Vikings also got contributions inside from 6-2 freshman Grace Loberg (13 points, seven rebounds), 5-10 junior Janie McCloughan (nine points, four rebounds) and 6-0 junior Abby Novak (seven points, seven rebounds).

“Kyra lit us up,“ Seberger said. “[But] then Sidney would hit a shot, I’d hit a shot, we’d have Grace go up for a layup, Abby go for a layup. It was just exciting to finally get going late in the game.”

Loberg scored inside to give the Vikings a 43-35 cushion midway through the third, but

Dear Abby: I’m a 14-yearold girl going on 15. I am half-Mexican. In the Mexican culture, a girl’s 15th birthday is the year in which she becomes a woman. Most girls have a “quinceanera” party for this birthday. But these celebrations cost a lot of money – almost as much as a wedding.

I have been debating whether or not I should have one. My mom says she would rather put the money toward my college fund. It is true that at the bridge table, producing an unusual bid might not be a good idea if it is going to flummox partner into making an error. But if you have discussed the situation before, you can safely produce the unusual.

You deal and open three hearts.

With the opponents retaining a respectful silence, your partner responds four diamonds. Assuming this is natural and forcing, what would you rebid?

What does four diamonds promise? Many teachers use the expression “six and 16” – at least a six-card suit and 16 high-card points. Also, typically, responder is very short in opener’s suit, especially when that is a major.

How should opener react?

With no support for responder’s suit, he may rebid his own suit or three no-trump (if legal, of course). With moderate support, like a low doubleton (or perhaps honor-doubleton with an unappealing hand), he raises responder’s suit. But with good support (any three cards, or honor-doubleton and an appealing hand), he shows a side-suit singleton (or void).

In this deal, North should rebid four spades. And that is just what South wants to hear.

He can now leap majestically to six diamonds.

Note that even after a club lead and trump shift, the contract is laydown. South takes one spade, one heart, eight diamonds and two spade ruffs on the board.
