On page 10 of the Jan. 22 edition of the Kane County Chronicle, the status of opposition to a proposed alcohol and drug treatment center was misstated. Campton Hills passed a resolution opposing it, but officials have not presented it or testified at the ongoing Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals hearings. Last year, Campton Hills, Plato and Campton townships passed resolutions against the county’s process for the proposal.

Peace breaks out in Batavia

People sing, shake hands, show goodwill at Peace Bridge event

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Peace broke out in Batavia on Sunday, as a small crowd of people shook hands, sang songs and lit candles.

They gathered on a pedestrian bridge, known as the Peace Bridge, in the middle of the Fox River on a clear, brisk evening.

Moonlight fell on the group as they sang songs of peace, such as John Lennon’s “Imagine” and “Peace Train” by Cat Stevens.

The event, billed as a celebration of peace, was orchestrated by Batavia barber Craig Foltos, who was instrumental in having the large “Peace on Earth” letters displayed on the bridge each holiday season since 2008.

Elburn trustees again deny village administrator’s resignation

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – For the second consecutive week, members of the Elburn Village Board voted down Village Administrator Erin Willrett’s attempt to resign.

By a 5-1 vote on Monday night, trustees denied the resignation and separation agreement. Last week’s vote was 4-2 against the resignation, with Ken Anderson and John Krukoff voting to approve the resignation. On Monday, Anderson was the only trustee voting in favor.

Krukoff, Bill Grabarek, Dave Gualdoni, Pat Schuberg and

Jeff Walter voted against it.

After the meeting, Willrett said she would have no comment. Asked whether she would remain in her role through her term, which runs through the end of April, she again answered, “no comment.”

Trustees quickly left after Monday’s vote. Last week, those who voted against the agreement indicated that they would not be in favor of paying the terms of the separation agreement.

Copies of the proposed separation agreement were handed to members of the media after the meeting.

According to the terms,

which were not approved, Willrett’s “last physical day of work” would have been Jan. 29. She would have continued to be an employee of the village through April 30 “and be paid using her accrued unused vacation hours, accrued unused sick hours and 240 hours of paid administrative leave.” It indicated that she had accrued 191.5 hours of unused vacation time and 96 hours of unused sick time.

Last week, trustees who voted down the resignation indicated that they expected Willrett to remain in her role through the end of the fiscal year. They said they were not critical of Willrett’s performance but some indicated they wanted to go in a different direction.

The topic was the only item on Monday night’s agenda. Board members went into closed session and emerged at 7:40 p.m.

St. Charles OKs homes on site once eyed for apartments

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A 22.6-acre parcel once eyed for apartments instead will be home to nearly 80 single-family houses.

The St. Charles City Council last week gave Corporate Reserve Development Partners LLC the remaining approval it needed to proceed with revised plans for a vacant lot north of Woodward Drive in western St. Charles.

It is part of the Corporate Reserve of St. Charles.

In addition to 78 homes, the site will include a connection to the Great Western Trail, a network of sidewalks on both sides of the street and a 1-acre park, which will be given to the St. Charles Park District, according to the city.

Third Ward Alderman Bill Turner said the neighbors support the development, which is near the Regency Estates and Remington Glen subdivisions.

Site work on the project could begin as early as this coming construction season, Planning Division Manager Russell Colby said. He noted the developer then could apply for building permits in the fall

Geneva’s Kayla Mickelsen makes her mark on ‘American Idol’ On the Web

alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Maybe you saw Kayla Mickelsen on stage during the 2013 Geneva’s Got Talent competition during Swedish Days.

Over the years, you might have watched her perform with the Geneva High School jazz choir or varsity choir.

She also was on stage in three school musicals.

Perhaps you saw her national TV debut this month, earning her golden ticket to Hollywood on “American Idol.” Mickelsen, an 18-yearold senior at the high school, can be expected to get significant TV time in the next two weeks, as Hollywood week footage airs on the Fox TV show. This week, there will be a one-hour episode Wednesday and a two-hour episode Thursday. Both will start at 7 p.m.

Mickelsen cannot reveal how she fared during Hollywood week, but she can say that the experience was “very intense.” A group of 24 will make it out of Hollywood to the next round.

“You don’t get a lot of sleep at all,” she said, adding that viewers “could probably expect to see a few tears, out of lack of sleep or whatever.”

Whatever the result, Mickelsen is excited about her musical future and enthused about her life in Geneva. She created headlines by describing herself as an “ice cream scooper,” referring to her work at Graham’s Chocolates. She also works at Nobel House in Geneva, where she said the plan is for her to start performing live music. She hopes to attend Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee where she intends to study commercial voice and learn about writing songs.

She said she appreciates the support of the community and her family. Her father, Kraig,

accompanied her to San Francisco for her “American Idol” audition. Previously, she auditioned twice for “The Voice,” but she said she never was able to advance far enough to be seen by the celebrity judges. And although she said she never really saw herself as a competitor on “Idol” – she said she doesn’t see herself as a pop star – she did dream of it.

“I always sang,” she said. “I would always make my friends do fake ‘American Idol’ in the basement with the karaoke machine.”

Andrew Bordoni is Mickelsen’s guitar teacher, and he

said she is a quick learner.

She started taking lessons two years ago, and Bordoni said she has “really grown a lot as a guitarist.” She credits her piano background for helping her learn guitar. She also teaches private piano lessons.

Bordoni said he knew she had auditioned for “American Idol,” but he had no idea how she fared.

“As soon as she showed up on the screen, and I saw her with the guitar, I literally jumped out of my seat,” Bordoni said.

He said he was impressed with what he saw.

“She was doing her performance, and she owned it like she had been doing it for 20 years,” said Bordoni, who called her “really, really talented” and creative.

Grace Chorneyko and Mickelsen say they are best friends.

Chorneyko said they met while working at Graham’s. Chorneyko, from Batavia, now goes to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. When her best friend headed to Hollywood, Chorneyko was there to watch her.

“She’s never been shy with singing,” Chorneyko said. “She loves to perform. She has a music room in her house, and she likes to sing and practice.”

Chorneyko recalls a day at Graham’s when Mickelsen got out her guitar and starting singing for her while they were doing homework. Chorneyko said she was a bit teary-eyed watching her friend on “American Idol.”

Erin Novotny met Mickelsen when they were in middle school. She said they were in choirs together, and – at one point – out of the blue, Mick-

elsen sent her a Facebook message, asking her to do a duet at a party. Since then, their friendship has grown. Novotny said they also work together at Graham’s. She was at a viewing party Mickelsen hosted for her first “American Idol” appearance. Novotny said she is excited for her friend.

“She was not afraid to express herself,” Novotny said.

“She has her own fashion sense. … She’s very confident.

It’s a good thing. She’s always been that way.”

Novotny said she is happy Mickelsen is seizing her opportunity and making local appearances. Mickelsen was invited to join “The Voice” finalist Jeffery Austin on stage at his recent show at The Arcada in St. Charles, but a travel snag prevented that. Nonetheless, she can look forward to playing at Nobel House, and she said she has performed the national anthem at her brother’s football games.

“People in the Tri-Cities have found out who she is,” Novotny said. “It’s such a big deal.”

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The chairman of the Active River Task Force called on city leaders Monday to take an “aggressive, proactive leadership role” in a project that aims to create a lively riverfront with attractions both on the water and off.

Many St. Charles aldermen – including Steve Gaugel of the 4th Ward, Rita Payleitner of the 2nd Ward and Dan Stellato of the 1st Ward – said they liked the proposals John Rabchuk presented.

The plans included recreational activities on the Fox River as well as paths for bicyclists and pedestrians, meet-

ing places, improved fishing and an area where children with disabilities can get to the river.

“This is a project for generations,” Payleitner said.

She noted that St. Charles doesn’t have a train station or major highway.

“But we have a river. Let’s use it to our advantage.”

Others – including 4th Ward Alderman Jo Krieger, 2nd Ward Alderman Art Lemke and 1st Ward Alderman Ron Silkaitis – said the Seventh Avenue creek project also deserves priority. Residents have been affected by flooding along the creek, they said.

Money also was an overall concern.

“When I hear, ‘The city

needs to get involved,’ I hear, ‘The taxpayer needs to pay for it,’ ” 5th Ward Alderman Maureen Lewis said.

Rabchuk acknowledged that a lot – including the cost – still is unknown.

“Nothing’s firm at this point,” he said, noting actual construction is years away.

But redeveloping the riverfront could have the potential of attracting upwards of $250 million in investments in the downtown over five years, Rabchuk said, stressing that was a rough estimate and not a guarantee.

“This project is a project to build and create a new lifestyle for downtown St. Charles,” he said. “It will change St. Charles for the better.”

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – About 60 people packed the Fox River and Countryside Fire Protection District meeting Monday to state their concerns with a staffing plan they said would result in fewer fulltime firefighters and possibly longer response times.

So many people came to the meeting at Station 2 in St. Charles Township, officials moved it to the apparatus bay.

Paul Ross, formerly a captain on the department, chastised the board for considering such a plan.

“As I began to see the shortcomings in his [Fire Chief Carl DeLeo] proposed plan, I offered suggestions to try to mitigate the concerns that I, and other officers, had, as well as serious

“The department has a 75 percent turnover rate for part time staff and today, after employing 50-plus part-time members, we have nine that are still with the department,” Ross said.

District resident Julie Riffle of Campton Hills criticized the board for suggesting to pay firefighters “less than someone working at McDonald’s.”

Board President Bob Handley said the part-time staffing model was necessary because the district had to cut costs by $200,000 to $300,000. Handley said the staffing model proposed for the Fox River district is the same one used by Pingree Grove, McHenry, Evergreen Park and McHenry.

“This model is not going to leave the distrcit any less safe,” Handley said.

‘A garden of all seasons’ Winter tour of Fabyan Japanese Garden draws a crowd in Geneva

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Because the Fabyan Japanese Garden is considered “a garden of all seasons,” Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley hosted a winter tour Saturday in the Fabyan Forest Preserve in Geneva.

About 40 people braved the January cold to take the tour.

“Why are we out here in the winter?” asked Margaret Eagan, assistant director of Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley. “Because in Japanese culture, they believe that the garden blooms not only in the springtime, but it also blooms in the winter. There is a flower called sekku. So when snow mounds on the plants, they say that the snow blossoms into what they call a sekku.”

the time they moved from Chicago to Geneva in 1907, they had purchased about 350 acres, Eagan said.

In 1910, the Fabyans wanted a Japanese garden, most likely based on an exhibit at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, also known as the Chicago World’s Fair. At that fair, countries from around the world were asked to have exhibits that really told more about their countries, Eagan said.

The Fabyans hired a Japanese landscape designer, Taro Otsuka, to create their garden, she said.

“There are different types of Japanese gardens,” Eagan said. “This is a tea garden with a tea house. ... This is truly a place of peace and tranquility.”

The Fabyan Japanese garden, just less than an acre, includes evergreens and gingko trees, bridges, hills, water features, a waiting bench cham-

ber and a tea house, Eagan said.

The waiting bench chamber is where a visitor would wait to make the transition from the outer garden to the inner garden, she said. This waiting bench chamber – where visitors were invited to hot tea and cocoa after the tour – has a round window on one side and a square one on the other, Eagan said. The tea house has the windows reversed.

Batavia resident Leanne Feuerborn said she appreciated the explanation of what the different elements in the garden mean in Japanese culture.

“I visited it, but I never really had an explanation,” Feuerborn said. “It’s been delightful and especially pretty with the snow on the ground, I think. It’s a place of serenity, even with so many people here. … It’s just lovely. I feel like I could be in Japan.”

Preservation Partners will host additional winter tours through the Fabyan Japanese Garden at 1 p.m. Feb. 7 and Feb. 27 at the Fabyan Forest Preserve, 1925 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva. AURORA – A Batavia man suffered an injury that was not life-threatening in Aurora early Saturday, moments after another man was fatally shot, according to an Aurora Police Department news release.

Although both incidents happened near La Quinta De Los Reyes, a bar at 36 E. New York St. in Aurora, police reported Saturday that it was not yet clear if they were “definitely related.”

Police responded to the bar about 1:40 a.m. for a shots fired call that indicated a person was down in a parking lot behind the establishment, according to the release.

Upon arrival, police reportedly found at least 100 people in the parking lot and surrounding areas, shouting and fighting. At the same time, the release states, police found Marcus Holland, 36, of Aurora, lying on the lot suffering from gunshot wounds.

It appeared Holland was shot more than once by someone who was on foot and who immediately left the scene by an unknown mode of transportation, the release states.

Holland reportedly was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe shots rang out after two groups of people from inside the bar began arguing and fighting once outside, according to the release.

It indicated there had been a large party inside.

A 22-year-old Batavia man was stabbed just outside the bar within moments of the gunshots being fired, according to the release.

The suspect in the stabbing reportedly was described as an African-American man in his early 20s, 5-foot-10 and 150 to 170 pounds. He reportedly wore a black, white and red hooded sweatshirt with a white shield on the front.

The Batavia man was treated at a hospital in Aurora for an injury to his back, police reported, noting he was released.

“A concrete motive has not been established in either the shooting or stabbing,” police reported. “Most of the people at the scene were uncooperative and hostile with police; however, investigators have cultivated some leads.”

Kids would rather play Xbox than make money shoveling

WASHINGTON – Snowzilla has gone, leaving behind confused snowfall estimates, regrettable junk-food decisions, an incubating October baby boom and a lingering sense of dread for many parents.

The work ethic of our kids: Where is it? Where are the entrepreneurial snow shovelers?

For generations of enterprising children, snowflakes may as well have been dollar bills, y’all, falling from the sky.

Ding-dong, scoop, shovel, scrape, ka-ching!

Kids jostled to be the first to ring the doorbells of the snowed-in, the $5 driveways added up and that new Atari Defender game cartridge, those rainbow Vans – yours and yours.

But in 2016? Not so much.

“3 ft of snow and NO kids knocking on doors to make money shoveling on a Sunday! What does that tell you? Sad state of affairs,” tweeted CNN analyst and retired NYPD detective Harry Houck.

“By the way, where are all the neighborhood kids wanting to make money shoveling snow?” bemoaned Roberta Rinker, who had zero doorbell rings from children in her neighborhood in Silver Spring, Maryland, and a huge shoveling job ahead of her.

All over social media, folks were telling kids to get off their Xboxes and get to work.

“Man where the young bucks at ... all this snow. Kids ain’t makin’ no money,” tweeted Real Talk N’ Sports, a local sports podcast.

A few folks were praising their hard-working kids.

“I got them outside to help me shovel, but then they just ended up playing in the back yard,” said the toughest, strictest dad I know, a square-jawed guy who manages construction sites.

In some places, kids were even discouraged from turning hard work into cash.

A couple of teens going door to door in New Jersey last year were stopped by police for operating without a license, just like the summertime lemonade-stand crackdown.

Politicians actually debated whether kids should have to get a $450 business license to shovel Old Lady Johnson’s walk down the street before passing a bill giving them special permission to shovel.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie signed it into law last week, just in time for the snow.

See, kids, some folks have to fight for the right to free enterprise.

The state of Illinois reportedly has more than 260 accounting systems.

No economic system can function effectively with so many accounting systems. Also, Illinois – according to some reports – has the second highest property tax in the country. With so many accounting systems, how could the state’s revenue be allocated correctly?

And, how can any accountability occur?

More taxes and more laws are not going to fix the state alone; those are only smoke and mirrors.

Our main issue is that Illinois continues having the same, old recycled politicians running the state for more than 30 years.

Example: Michael Madigan is the longest sitting Illinois speaker of the house and is the chairman for the Democratic Party of Illinois. This is a major conflict of interest for the residents of Illinois.

Everyone should be aware that there are only two reasons why the state budget has not passed.

‘MAKING A STATEMENT’ Deep Bulldogs dethrone St. Charles East

kdruley@shawmedia.com WEST CHICAGO – Several Batavia wrestlers searched for a certain discounted concession stand item after the Upstate Eight Conference tournament concluded Saturday.

No question, a UEC championship plaque satisfied the Bulldogs’ inner hunger, but hot dogs beckoned, anyway.

Spoils flowed all around as Batavia unseated four-time defending tourney champion St. Charles East, scoring 248 points to the runner-up Saints’ 233 in the 14-team event. A competition with a bit wider gulf – East 37, Batavia 16 in a UEC River dual two weeks ago – helped stir the Bulldogs to the top of the podium.

“Ever since the dual, we’ve been talking about coming back here and beating them, making a statement,” Bulldogs junior 138-pounder Seth Winkle said. “And the dual loss still hurts, but this helps us get over it a little bit.”

Winkle placed third, striking in the middle of a remarkable run that saw Batavia earn a top-six finish at each of the 14 weight classes. Mike Doranski (132), Nick Benson (170) and Dylan Uzumecki (220) won titles.

East featured four champions – Joe Ruffino (106), Justin Benjamin (113), Anthony Rubino (126) and D.J. McDermott (152).

That’s a junior, a freshman and two seniors, respectively.

“We don’t have that many seniors in the program this year. … We’ve had a lot of young guys step up a lot,” McDermott said.

One of the veterans, Rubino, was voted the conference’s most outstanding wrestler.

He improved to 31-6 with a 3-0 tournament run that culminated with a title-bout victory

“I’ve been wrestling with Kolbe since sixth grade, so I knew he was going to be tough,” Rubino said. “I just had to handle him. Send a message, you know.”

O’Brien, 28-2 as a junior, only has lost to Rubino this season. They maintain a friendly rivalry after first encountering one another as kids competing for SCN Youth Wrestling.

“I mean, it’s a tough loss, but I’ll see him again Friday (in a dual at North) and then probably again at regionals, too,” O’Brien said. “So I like my chances to get back at

him.”

Democracy aside, many Bulldogs lent their would-be votes to Benson as conference MVP. Or at least standout performance of the tournament.

Trailing West Aurora’s Joe Griffin, 11-3, in the third period – a score that included separate near-falls from the Blackhawks senior – Benson saw an opening.

His resolve kicked in, too.

“You can’t ever quit in a match,” Benson said.

To be sure, Griffin learned the same lesson when Benson secured a fall at 4:26.

“I saw that he was tired and decided to go for a throw there,” Benson said.

Although he won his title bout by a 5-4 decision, not via fall, Geneva senior Alex Crowe used similar urgency to secure the Vikings’ lone title, at 195.

Crowe topped West Aurora’s Josh Mayhew, a firsttime opponent, by sprawling away from Mayhew’s shots and working to move into takedown position. As Geneva coach Tom Chernich advised from matside, “HE SHOOTS, YOU SCORE!” “[Mayhew] was kind of taking bad shots, so I knew I could get behind him,” Crowe said.

“I was quick enough to.”

Speed and agility weren’t as valuable for some programs after the awards cere-

mony ended. East and Batavia were among those who stuck around for team pictures.

Host West Chicago faced the task of helping disassemble the tournament, including taking the podium to a storage room down the hall.

The Bulldogs would have liked to squeeze a few more bodies into their photos. The missing group, however, was not without credit.

“Even our JV guys and our freshmen, they push us all the time and are challenging us and making sure we keep our spot and everything,” Winkle said. “It’s amazing having all of them. ... It just shows how deep we are, I guess.”

NOTEWORTHY Poulin hopes North Stars ‘don’t stop believing’

Tom Poulin believes in his team. Despite St. Charles North’s 3-11 start to the season, the coach says his team is close. He’s not the only one.

Batavia coach Jim Nazos says the North Stars are pushing toward more success, as well.

“They have a lot of wins ahead of them. I really believe that,” Nazos said after his Bulldogs beat North on Friday night.

But as much as Poulin believes in his team, its system and the players he’s put on the court, he has been persistent about making sure he’s not alone in that belief.

After 10 previous seasons of coaching boys basketball at North, this might be his most challenging.

“We were talking about that (after Friday’s game). Are we confident? Do we believe in what we do and how we do it?

Do we believe in each other?

ROSELLE – Twelve turns, 12 strikes, one rendezvous with perfection.

St. Charles East senior boys bowler Cole Cartee rolled a perfect, 300, game during Saturday’s Lake Park Cole Cartee Regional at the Brunswick Zone, helping the Saints to a team title and a return trip to the IHSA state meet.

Cartee was quick to laud his teammates’ accomplishments after reaching his sport’s individual pinnacle. Then again, how couldn’t they be the first thing on his mind when the group engulfed Cartee immediately after his final strike?

“I could not get past them all because I was just being mobbed,” Cartee said.

Cartee shared a lane with the rest of the Saints, who won the 12-team event with an overall pinfall of 6,423, 193 pins ahead of runner-up Lake Park. Cartee’s 1,420 series over six games was second individually. Juniors Dean Mudlong (1,344), Andrew Culbertson (1,291) and Kyle Middendorf (1,205) were next for the Saints.

The sectional featured 137 bowlers who completed at least one game, but the house still managed to catch wind of Cartee’s ongoing feat.

“I just kind of realized the further I went, the more people were starting to hush down and get quiet,” said Cartee, whose previous high game in competition was a 290. “Then people started surrounding me. So it started getting nerve-racking, but I just stayed calm.”

Following seasonlong protocol, the Saints still shouted, “Si,” the Spanish word for “yes,” after each team strike.

“We just like to maintain the atmosphere it was before so people don’t get psyched out about it,” Cartee said.

The Saints will compete in the state tournament at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon, which begins Friday and concludes Jan. 30. East finished fourth at state last season.

“My buddy Nate has handled the spot really well at 106, so it’s kind of like he sets the tone for me,” Kedzie said. “It just helps the team out more if I go 113.”

Once the Class 2A Rochelle Regional rolls around on Feb. 6, Kaneland coach Joe Orosco said Kedzie will be down at 106.

“We try to keep Nate at 106 for duals,” Joe Orosco said.

“We try to do the best job, score as many team points as we could, so we kept him at 106. Kedzie will go at 106 at regionals, but he’s kind of turned it on. We just have to get him in that right frame of mind all the time.”

Kaneland finished sixth in the team standings. Nathan Orosco, George Strang (152) and Colin Gussman (182) took second in their respective weight classes.

GIRLS BASKETBALL Geneva 66, St. Charles East 57:

At St. Charles, Geneva finally pulled away from East in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter to win the game. The

Upstate Eight Conference River Division rivals were tied or within a point of each other at the end of the first three quarters.

“They played us tough the first time, too. It was almost the exact same game – onepoint, three-point game all three quarters,” Geneva coach Sara Meadows said. “In the fourth quarter, we just talked about how we had to pick it up a notch. Try to separate ourselves and go.”

“As my assistant coach said, we played really well for 30 minutes,” East coach Lori Drumtra said. “We just have to learn how to close out the final two minutes.”

The Saints took a brief lead, 46-45, 50 seconds into the last quarter on Kelly Rinker’s fifth 3-pointer of the night. The junior guard lead East with 19 points.

Geneva (17-3, 8-0 UEC River) retook the lead on its next trip down the floor when Stephanie Hart canned two free throws. East (8-13, 4-4) was able to stay within three points, trailing, 58-55, at the 1:48 mark of the fourth quarter. Geneva then scored eight unanswered points to put the game away.

“We work really hard through this whole season to get here and we can’t give it up now, so I knew we had to pick it up [in the fourth quarter] and get the ball inside,” said the Vikings’ Margaret Whitley, who led all scorers with 27

points.

Batavia 53, St. Charles North 38: At Batavia, seven sec-

ond-half 3-pointers, four by Jessica Koch, keyed the Bulldogs. Koch, a senior, was held to just two points in the first half, but ignited a 10-0 Batavia run to start the third quarter with two quick baskets from behind the arc. She finished with 14 points for the game, one behind Hannah Frazier’s team lead.

“I was able to get going in the second half,” Koch said.

“The first half was not too good, but my teammates told me keep taking shots.”

The Bulldogs (17-5, 6-1 UEC River) turned a 16-15 halftime deficit into a 19-point lead late in the fourth quarter. Batavia’s Hailey Orman added two second-half 3s and finished with three for the game. Elena Cabrera had the Bulldogs’ other second-half 3-pointer.

Morgan Rosencrants pulled down 14 rebounds for North (12-7, 4-4). She added nine points and a steal for the North Stars. Claire Jakaitis led North with 10 points in limited action due to being in foul trouble much of the game.

Rosencrants and Anna Davern also had foul issues.

“We had all three of our bigs on the bench at one point,” North Stars coach Sean Masoncup said. “That’s tough.”

Kate Greenaway (1846-1901), an English artist, often is called the creator of picture books. As a young girl, she drew watercolor pictures of children dressed in oldfashioned clothes in a nearby village. She created a pattern, made the dresses and bonnets, and dressed models to pose for her drawings. The romantic style was immediately successful, and soon she was illustrating cards, calendars, books and almanacs, earning both fame and fortune. She soon started writing the poetry for her books. The Kate Greenaway look became so popular it was copied in dress patterns, dishes, napkin rings, glassware and, of course, picture books. Collectors today like the original books and drawings and also collect the lookalikes. The world she created reminds people of the joys of childhood and more innocent times. So it is not surprising that a figural napkin ring sold at a James Julia auction in Fairfield, Maine, in 2015 for $533. It featured two Greenaway-type girls in a tree, and because it was a “double,” it had added value. *** Q: I have an Avon apple-shaped candle holder that is about 50 years old. It’s gold-painted glass. The top half of the apple comes off so you can put a small candle inside the bottom half. It’s about 5 inches high and 4 inches wide. Is it worth anything?

A: Avon made this Golden Apple candle holder in 1968 and 1969.

Avon started in 1886 as the California Perfume Company. The name Avon was used beginning in 1929.

The company has made many figural bottles, jars, figurines, children’s toys, jewelry and other items. The Golden Apple candle holder came with a perfumed candle and originally sold for $6. They sell online today for about $5-$15. *** Q: When my mother returned from Japan in 1945, she brought several Japanese items. Among them were two jigger-style cups, which, when held up to light, had a shadowy Japanese lady’s head inside on the bottom. I would love to find out their value and if they would be of interest to Japanese collectors.

A: Your cups are for serving sake, a Japanese rice wine. The faces on the bottom are those of Geishas. The images are called lithophanes, derived from Greek words that mean “light in stone” or “appear in stone.” Pictures were carved into beeswax, then used to make a plaster-of-Paris mold for the porcelain slip that formed the lady’s head in your cup. Where the picture is lightest, the porcelain is thin; where it is darkest, the porcelain is thick. When you look at them, they seem to be uneven surfaces, but hold them to light, and three-dimensional pictures appear. Japanese Geisha lithophane tea cups or saki cups were popular souvenirs for soldiers and travelers

were popular in the 1930s and ‘40s.

18 Direct current stimulation’s

effect on brain still unproven

Dear Dr. K: I saw an ad for something called a “tDCS brain-stimulating device.” It supposedly helps improve memory and thinking. Is it worth a try?

Dear Reader: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) transmits a current into the brain through electrodes (little metal plates) on the forehead or scalp. The current is weak; it comes from a 9-volt battery (the size used in a smoke detector). People who undergo tDCS may feel their scalp tingle and hear a humming noise. Doctors can control whether the current activates – or suppresses – the neurons in your brain that lie beneath the electrodes.

The technique of tDCS has been tried on and off for more than 100 years.

The technique is different from another increasingly used technique called transcranial magnetic stimulation.

I spoke to Dr. Daniel Press, a neurologist with the Berenson-Allen Center for Noninvasive Brain Stimulation at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

He says that brain stimulation, if used carefully, looks promising. That’s especially true if combined with other therapies. Several studies are underway to see if, and how, tDCS can be used to sharpen mental skills and treat symptoms of mind-body disorders.

For now, tDCS is only FDA-approved to speed the absorption of certain medications through the skin. But it is being used “off label” to treat many other conditions. These include: • CHRONIC PAIN: tDCS may be effective for treating nerve pain. This includes back and leg pain, pain and numbness in hands and feet caused by diabetes, and fibromyalgia.

• DAMAGE FROM STROKE: Early research suggests that tDCS may improve a person’s ability to move

• EATING DISORDERS: In early studies, tDCS has reduced episodes of binge eating and bulimia in women with those eating disorders.

• MEMORY AND LEARNING: Many recent studies have evaluated the effect of tDCS on people’s ability to perform mental tasks.

Studies have focused on tasks that involve recognizing visual patterns, recalling lists of unrelated words or doing math problems. Overall, the results indicate the technique is most likely to improve mental function when used together with other types of training, such as learning new systems for remembering names.

Some manufacturers are selling tDCS devices directly to consumers.

But these devices aren’t regulated by the FDA, and there is no guarantee they are safe or effective. I would avoid them.

I also would avoid going to a doctor who uses tDCS without studying its effects. It is an unproven treatment, though adverse effects seem to be few (temporary nausea, headache, irritation of the skin under the electrode).

More important, tDCS is of unproven value. For that reason, the thing to do, if you’re interested in trying tDCS, is to enroll in one of the many clinical trials seeking volunteers.

Mother who failed to love her own child is the real loser in life Dr. Wallace: I’m writing in response to the letter from the 13-year-old girl who wanted to know if she should move in with a married sister because her mom was hateful and unloving.

Her mom constantly made her feel bad because she claimed it was her fault that her marriage had failed. I want to thank you for telling her to move to her sister’s home where her sister was hoping to give her a better life and had been encouraging her to move in with her family.

I’m 65 years old and my mom is 86. I’m her primary care giver and she is nice to me now, but my earliest memory of my mother was when she told me that her life would have been much better if I had never been born and she even told me I was an overgrown ox. I was always the tallest girl in my class and usually also taller than all the boys.

My grandparents were always kind and loving toward me and had even suggested that I live with them because they had plenty of room and truly loved me. My mother was an unloving and unloved person and I was a total disappointment to her.

Some women should never have been mothers. As the Good Book says, “Honor thy mother,” but it doesn’t say we have to like her. – Nameless, Harrisburg, Pa. Nameless: It was terribly dif-

ficult for you to grow up with an unloving mother (thank goodness they are the rare exception!) However, I can tell from your letter that you have risen above your unhappy childhood and have become a compassionate, caring adult, bestowing love even on the mother who rejected you so long ago.

The big life loser was your mother, who failed to love her own child and stunted herself as a human being.

Dr. Wallace: I’m planning my 15th birthday party and I’ve sent invitations to 15 girls. Six of us usually do some fun things together and live near each other, but sometimes one girl (who is the least popular) is ignored and left out of some of our activities.

Now, two of these girls have said they didn’t like the idea that I invited her, and said they might not come if she will be there. I like these girls and would like them to be at my party, but I would not feel good if I had to tell this girl she couldn’t come. What do you think I should do? -- Nameless, Pittsburg, Kans.

Nameless: It’s your birthday and your party. You made out

the guest list hoping all the girls would come. If some of them choose not to attend, that’s their concern, or possibly their problem. Those who show up will have a wonderful time, and those who don’t will miss out.

You did the right thing by inviting this girl. Don’t even consider revoking her invitation. That would be cowardly and cruel. Your two snobbish friends are applying peer pressure to get their way. Don’t have any part of it!

Dr. Wallace: My parents eat a lot of fruit, but they always peel off the skin of fruit such as pears, apples, plums, apricots and peaches. They think the skin contains a lot of harmful chemicals. I like to eat the skin on my fruit, but I don’t want to get sick. Is the skin safe? -- Kenny, Little Rock, Ark. Kenny: If properly rinsed (held under running cool water for 30 seconds), the skins are safe to eat and they provide needed fiber. An average-sized apple with the peel provides about five grams of fiber; half a cup of applesauce contains less than half that amount. Fiber is also important because it helps maintain normal body functions and may reduce the risk of cancer.

Some bridge players, when faced with a guess or two, rely on their card reading or human frailty. Others prefer to stick to mathematics.

In today’s deal, South pushed into seven hearts.

After West led a trump, and East discarded a diamond, how should declarer have planned the play?

North’s two-no-trump response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise, promising four or more hearts and at least game-going values. South twice used Roman Key Card Blackwood to learn that his partner had one key card (the diamond ace), the heart queen and the club king -- nice!

South seems to have to find the club queen, since he can ruff his two low spades in the dummy and dummy’s diamond seven in his hand. So the original declarer drew trumps ending in his hand, then led the club jack.

He assumed that if West had the club queen, he would cover or would think about it.

However, when West played low smoothly, South won with dummy’s king and returned a club to his 10 ... and went down one. Well-defended, West.

The mathematician sees that he can also get home with four spades, five hearts, one diamond, two clubs and a club ruff in the dummy after discarding two clubs on the third and fourth spade winners.

When there are two suits missing the queen, the best play is to cash the ace and king in the suit with the greater number of cards (here, clubs), and if the queen does not fall, to finesse in the other suit (spades).

Since West had a doubleton club queen, that would have worked.

My sisters were 15 and 16. The older one was not happy; the younger one loved having a baby sister.

As fate would have it, my mother died when I was 7 years old. My father was too old to care for a child, so my older sister, the one who hadn’t been thrilled with my arrival, and her husband became my “parents.” Not every day was perfect, but my life was very blessed.

My sister, whom I called Momma, became ill in her 60s, and my brother-in-law, whom I called Daddy for the rest of his life, also had health problems.

I became their “legs” for many errands. When Daddy died I became Momma’s primary caregiver.

I would like those two girls to know that the little “intruder” may just be the one who takes care of them someday.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Dear Abby: When I was a junior in high school, my mother told me she was pregnant. I was disgusted and angry, and I told her so. As I reflect back on it, I’m mortified that I could be so cruel. After giving it more thought, I realized I was annoyed to think my parents were sexual beings.

Teenagers that age are just coming to terms with their own sexuality. They can also be somewhat selfish and self-absorbed. While it may be a family matter to some extent, it really is between the mother and father.

My little brother is very close to me now and, more important, close to my children, who are nearer in age to him.

Dear Abby: I just read the letter from “Expecting in Canada” (Sept. 8) and am disappointed in her daughters’ reaction to her pregnancy, as were you.

My own mother announced she was pregnant with my baby brother when she was 42 and my sister and I were in college. Now, 46 years later, I can say he is one of the best things that ever happened to our family. He took great care of both my parents as they grew older and was with them when each passed away. My sister and I are very close to him, even though we nicknamed him “the crown prince” and teased him because that’s how my parents treated him.
