2 Health agency plans radon awareness event, contests KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com As part of National Radon Action Month, the Kane County Healthy Places Coalition and Kane County Health Department will be promoting two contests for school-aged children to raise awareness of the dangers of radon.

Winners of the contests could win a cash prize and see their projects used in statewide and national radon awareness campaigns, according to a news release from the health department.

A poster contest is sponsored by the American Lung Association. It is for students ages 9 to 14 and is open until March 1. First-place winners will be awarded $200 and be entered in a national contest, with the chance to win $1,000.

The annual statewide radon video contest is being held. Illinois high school students and classes can create a 1-minute video public service announcement or commercial that will increase public awareness of radon gas and encourage people to test their homes. The American Lung Association and Illinois Emergency Management Agency, in partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5, is sponsoring a video contest for Illinois high school students. Top prize for the video is $1,000. Videos are due Wednesday.

Even though he was a novice at turkey bowling, Brian Darflinger of St. Charles said he was more than up for the challenge.

“I am just happy no one got hurt,” he joked.

CAMPTON HILLS – Threeyear-old Elena Hamilton pitched fake snowballs at holes where a wooden snowman’s buttons should be, while her parents, Eric and Amanda Hamilton of Campton Hills, stood by and encouraged her.

Then Eric Hamilton tried with a real snowball, packing a good round one and, pitching it with a quick underhand throw, smacked it right through one of the snowman’s button holes.

Corron Farm’s Winter Wonders event Saturday brought out about 70 people, including the Hamiltons.

“It’s just nice to come to support what they are trying to do here,” Amanda Hamilton said.

“And it’s a beautiful day to be outside in winter.”

The Corron Farm Preservation Society, partnering with Campton Hills, Campton Township and Campton Township Parks and Open Space, hosted a day of outside winter activities as a fundraiser for replacing the roof on its barn, which was built in 1835, organizers said.

Volunteer Carol Stolte, who is part of the village of Campton Hills’ community relations committee, was in charge of the snowball toss, encouraging families like the Hamiltons to give it a go. Organizers came prepared with 25 face snowballs in case there wasn’t enough snow for real snowballs.

Winter Wonders also included a wagon ride, woods walk, making s’mores and learning about snowshoeing, among other activities, attracting a steady stream of local families.

Justin and Katlyn Eggar of Campton Hills brought their 9-month-old baby, Karys, all bundled up in a carrier held close to her father’s chest. Justin Eggar said his mother invited them.

Saints deliver fourth straight UEC crown

Who needs the “WE ST. CHARLES” chant when you can assert yourself over several hours?

The Saints did just that during this weekend’s Upstate Eight Conference tournament at Geneva, rebounding from a regular-season dual loss to UEC River champ Batavia to earn their fourth straight conference team crown.

Seniors Keone Derain (152 pounds) and Ramon Lopez (170), now part of three championship teams, captured individual titles as East cemented 10 top-five finishes in all.

“Our goal coming into this

was kind of to show everyone,” Derain said. “We lost to Batavia. That’s not who we were.

So we wanted to come into this tournament and show people who we were. That we’re St. Charles East and not just some Friday night dual team, you know.”

Like Batavia, which recently returned to full health and placed fifth in the 16-team field, East contended with injuries when the teams met Dec. 12 in St. Charles.

Lopez and fellow finalist Joe Ruffino (106) were among the Saints who missed the dual, a 35-18 Bulldogs win.

On Saturday, Batavia claimed a finals rematch from that night when Dylan Uzumecki handled Will Leite in a 7-2 decision at 220.

“We knew at the time we weren’t 100 percent,” Saints

coach Jason Potter said. “We had to just make sure we kind of got it together at the end. I think this just shows that all that work we did throughout the year is starting to pay off when it counts.”

Batavia boasted eight topfive finishes, including its triumvirate of battle-tested, upper-weight practice partners.

Uzumecki and seniors Mitch Krusz (second, 285) and Noah Frazier (fifth, 195) tangle every afternoon.

With Saturday’s results, they’re a collective 66-18 this season.

“We’re all pretty close,” Uzumecki said. “We’re pretty even when we go at it.”

Frazier proved equally diplomatic in discussing the setup, and why not? Before the finals started, he was named the UEC’s Ed Washington Sports-

manship Award winner.

Former wrestling and football teammate Connor McKeehan, a 2014 Batavia grad, earned the same honor last season.

“We’ll have to have a sportsmanship duel, I guess,” Frazier grinned.

Host Geneva (eighth) and St. Charles North (ninth) both had one individual champion.

The Vikings’ Colin Parsons saved his most dominant bout for last, defeating Glenbard East’s Scott Szabo by 14-5 major decision for the 132-pound title.

Parsons hadn’t faced Szabo this season, but knew he had to compete with urgency either way.

“The kid really, really pushed me and I was just fighting to not get gassed,” Parsons said. “I just had to keep a good attitude and keep fighting.”

While Parsons improved to 30-6, North’s Chad Reynolds now stands at 17-11 after taking what even he called an unexpected run to the title at 160.

A sophomore, Reynolds capitalized on his first conference tournament – he missed last year’s varsity tourney with ringworm and the JV competition was snowed out – punctuating the weekend with a 4-3 decision against West Aurora’s Rashann Ford for the title.

“I didn’t think my record was that good, to be honest,” Reynolds said. “I lost about 11 or so. So when I came back and I won this, I was really shocked.”

Reynolds’ breakthrough marked just one bright spot for the North Stars.

North, struggling with numbers, illnesses and injuries, entered only five wrestlers, but each placed in the top six.

just to keep them out of their rhythm,” Drumtra said. “I thought both defenses [zone, man] worked pretty well and we hit some key shots. We shot the ball pretty well. Katie got to the basket. That’s huge when they don’t really have an answer to try to stop her.”

The switch to the zone defense especially limited Geneva’s free throw attempts.

“We stayed in that for a while,” Drumtra said. “That was key; keeping them off the foul line in the second half was huge since it seemed like they were there an awful lot in the first half. And that stops us to in transition; the clock is always stopped and you can’t get running.”

Loberg’s 14 points led the Vikings, while Janie McCloughan had 13 points and seven rebounds. Abby Novak had seven points and seven rebounds, while Stephanie Hart pulled down four boards and added seven points.

Kyra Washington had a quiet night on offense for East, finishing with seven points, but made a difference on the glass, pulling down 13 boards.

Claussner credited her big night, and the big win, to the team coming together at the right time.

“We just came together as a team,” she said. “Our last couple losses we were playing individually. Our biggest thing tonight was coming in as a team and have everyone contribute to overcome a team like Geneva. We had to really come together, and that’s what we did.”

While their moves on the court may not have been as well-designed as the drill team’s, the Saints boys basketball squad employed a routine that paved the way to a 70-36 win against the Wildcats in an Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

East worked the ball inside to Cole Gentry and Jack Bronec. They in turn would pass the ball back to the perimeter for a 3-point attempt.

The sequence worked so well that 18 of the team’s 23 baskets were treys.

“They were keying in the paint trying to stop Cole’s drive and get [Bronec], so that left the guys outside wide open,” East coach Pat Woods said. “So we took what that gave us.”

Said West Chicago coach Bill Recchia: “We ran into a buzzsaw tonight. They didn’t miss very many shots. They attacked the basket well, kicked the ball out well and responded well to any pressure we put on them.”

Nine different Saints drilled 3-pointers, led by Gentry and Jake Asquini. Gentry scored 15 of his game-high 21

points from beyond the arc while Asquini drained five treys for his 15 points.

“I was just shooting when I was open,” Asquini said. “My teammates did a good job of finding me.”

Eighteen 3-pointers is not a program record, Woods said.

“We just take them, we don’t count them. I think we’ve been around that mark before,” Woods said.

On the other end of the court, the Saints defense stymied the Wildcats main scoring threats, brothers Mike and Tai Bibbs, limiting both players to two points. West Chicago only sank 11 baskets, with seven coming in the first half.

“We were just trying to harass their guards and get a lot of ball pressure on them,” Asquini said. “I thought everyone who guarded their top guy, Mike Bibbs, did great on him.”

East (16-2, 8-1 UEC River) opened the game with four straight 3-pointers and led, 197, after the first quarter.

West Chicago (5-11, 3-6) opened the second quarter with a 8-2 run and pulled within 21-17 midway through the period on a Tai Bibbs basket.

The Saints responded with a 10-1 run to end the quarter and take a 31-18 halftime lead.

East continued the 3-point barrage in the third quarter, scoring 15 of its 21 points on treys. The only 2-point field goals came on a long two by Gentry and layup on a steal by Mike Vyzral (six points).

GENEVA – Inside Geneva’s Mack Olson Gym on Saturday night, with the confined space afforded via the smaller venue, everything was magnified.

Moved to the smaller gym to accommodate the Upstate Eight Conference wrestling meet, the St. Charles East girls basketball team had no reservations, knocking off Geneva, 66-54, to hand the Vikings their first UEC River loss.

“They played really well together; that’s a tough environment to play in,” Saints coach Lori Drumtra said. “I thought they did a nice job at handling everything that Geneva threw at us.”

East held Geneva’s Grace Loberg scoreless in the second half after giving up 14 to the sophomore center in the first half. Freshman guard Margaret Whitley was held to just five points.

“We didn’t want Whitley to get going, and I think we kind of contained her a little bit,” Drumtra said. “Make somebody else beat you, that’s kind of our theme, make them have to make those shots.”

The Saints (13-7, 6-2 UEC River) traded leads with Geneva (16-6, 10-1) throughout the first half before sophomore guard Samantha Munroe was fouled with 0.6 seconds remaining in the half and the Saints down, 27-26.

Munroe knocked down both free throws for her first points of the half as the Saints retook

the lead.

“I think as a team it really increased our momentum and kept the energy and intensity level up,” Munroe said. “We just looked for the open person and played together so well and that’s how we play the game.”

The momentum shift carried over into the second half, where Munroe knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points, second-best only to Katie Claussner’s 30, which tied a career high.

“That was a huge momentum shift,” Claussner said, referring to Munroe’s last-second free throws. “Instead of going in down one, we went in up one and that was great. Props to her, she had a fantastic game.”

Munroe nailed back-to-back 3s early in the third quarter to extend the Saints lead to 36-30.

“I think I was allowed – Katie does a really good job on drawing people in and pushing it out – so I had a little more time to release my shot,” Munroe said.

But the Vikings, playing their third game in as many nights, clawed back into it and trailed, 45-42, heading to the fourth quarter.

Cued by Claussner, the Saints opened the fourth quarter with 12-4 run to finish with the 12-point win.

Drumtra pulled Claussner and Kyra Washington aside and switched defenses multiple times in the second half, limiting Geneva’s quality looks as well as its trips to the foul line.

Dear Abby: I joined a weekly prayer group with women from my church. As a young mom, I appreciate having the opportunity to get out of the house and socialize with other adults, and all the women are nice.

We use an online sign-up to schedule who will host each week. The trouble is, all of the other members have much larger, nicer homes than mine. There’s always space for everyone to sit, and a basement for all the kids to play in while we’re occupied. I’d love to host, but I’m afraid having all those people in my house would be an embarrassment.

No one has asked why I haven’t hosted yet, but I’m getting worried about what to say if someone does. Dear Abby: We have a couple of daughters who have told us we must take off our shoes if we visit them. Although I’m not sure of their reasons for this, I do know for sure that we have never tracked any kind of dirt into their house when we visited. In fact, our shoes are always clean.

I have very sensitive feet.

I cannot even walk outside barefoot. On top of that, my feet get cold if they aren’t covered. I have always worn house slippers at home if I didn’t have shoes on.

In a discussion with my wife, I suggested that their request was both inconsiderate and disrespectful. I also said they should provide alternatives to shoes for visitors if they expect guests to remove their shoes. What is the proper etiquette in a situation like this? – Cold Feet in Iowa Dear Cold Feet: A person does not have to track “dirt” into a house to carry germs on the soles of one’s shoes. If guests have walked on a sidewalk or driveway where someone has walked a dog or spat, then I can see why a parent might want shoes removed.

Good manners in a case like this would be to cheerfully cooperate with your hosts and, if slippers are not provided, to bring a pair over that you can leave for the next time you visit.

Dear Abby: We have a 27-year-old nephew who lives at home with his parents. He is a good guy, but he doesn’t drive. He has no physical or mental impairments that we are aware of, and all of his numerous family members have offered to teach him. But his nonchalant attitude toward learning has made everyone give up.

We live in a big city with poor public transportation, and his job is far from home.

Catching the bus to work is unsafe and takes hours, and daily cab fare isn’t cost effective. We know his parents aren’t happy transporting him back and forth, and we think they need to push him toward more independence. His social life is limited to family events, and dating is out of the question.

As we all know, defense is the hardest part of the game. Some players, when the declarer, carefully count losers and winners, and work out a sensible line of play. But as soon as they go on defense, they stop thinking and play the first card that comes into their minds.

No doubt you do not fit this picture, but your partner is a textbook example. So this week we are going to try to help your partner’s defense, which will greatly improve your results.

There are a few important “rules” to follow. Which one does this deal highlight?

West is on lead against four hearts. Which card should he choose?

North’s four clubs was a splinter bid. It announced four-card heart support, at least game-going values and a singleton or void in clubs.

West apparently has two sensible leads: the diamond queen and spade two. However, the dummy surely has at least five diamonds.

With 4-4 in the red suits, North would almost certainly have responded one heart, not one diamond. Also, not leading an opponent’s suit will be right most of the time. West should select the low spade. And here is the key point: When leading a suit partner has not bid, a low card from length guarantees at least one honor in that suit.

Here, therefore, when declarer plays dummy’s spade nine, East should win the trick with his jack.

The only honor East cannot see is the king, and West must have it. Next, East cashes his spade ace and leads another spade. Then, he waits for the setting trick from his trump holding.
