Informing students about journalism I spoke to a few dozen students about my job as editor of the Kane County Chronicle during Career Day at Central High School in Burlington on Friday.

As part of my presentation, I passed out a short survey that asked students why they were interested in learning more about journalism on Career Day. “I want to go into journalism!” one student wrote with enthusiasm.

“I’m a good writer and wanted to see what it takes to do it at a professional level,” wrote another.

“I read the Chronicle,” stated another.

Those who have a passion for writing, love meeting new people and want to learn more about the word around them are good candidates for journalism.

Kane County courtroom picture could lead to charges, report says

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com S T . C H A R L E S T O W NSHIP – A person accused of taking pictures of Kane County court proceedings could face such charges as disorderly conduct and contempt of court, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

A deputy was called to the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township on Jan. 15 to assist court security with an incident that happened in courtroom 305, police reported.

Court security reportedly saw a subject take pictures with his cellphone during an armed robbery hearing.

Authorities confiscated the Samsung Galaxy S and found numerous pictures of the defendant, an assistant state’s attorney and Judge Susan Clancy Boles, police reported.

Police reported the phone also contained images of the subject and others in possession of loaded handguns and rifles.

Two assistant state’s attorneys told authorities that because of the circumstances, the subject could be charged with disorderly conduct and contempt of court. Sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said Friday the case remains under review with the State’s Attorney’s Office.

He said it should be no surprise that photography, video taking and talking on cellphones are prohibited in courtrooms, as signs are posted with those rules.

“Even we are supposed to turn our phones off,” Gengler said. “It’s pretty strict.”

••• Finally, I attended the opening night performance of “42nd Street” at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora last Saturday.

I was blown away at the opening tap-dance routine, which was my favorite part of the show. But the whole production kept my attention, made me smile and made me wish I went to the theater more often.

School District 303 runs out of salt, official says

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles School District has run out of salt.

It’s uncertain what effect that might have on school activities, or when the district will receive additional supplies of salt.

Jim Blaney, the spokesman for School District 303, said of the district’s salt supply, that it “is low to the point of being out.”

He said district officials were aware of the National Weather Service forecast for Monday that calls for “areas of blowing snow” with a high of 4 below zero.

But he added that “in the end, decisions are based on actual conditions.”

However, the district, like other local school districts, did announce school closings a day in advance during the deep freeze that took place in early January.

Blaney said such decisions are about “can we safely transport students to and from school. That doesn’t change. That’s always the case.” He said the district shares its salt supplies with the city of St. Charles, but he could not speak on the status of St. Charles’ salt supplies.

GENEVA

County wants to sell Sixth Street site for new library

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva Library District trustees are considering the purchase of the former Sixth Street School, 210 S. Sixth St., Geneva, as a site for a new library.

Trustees this week discussed the site and approved hiring Polach Appraisal Group of Wheaton for $5,500 to do an appraisal of the property, which currently is owned by Kane County.

The library district had planned to buy the property in 2004 for $1.02 million as a new library site, but county officials at the time did not finish the paperwork, and the deal did not go through.

The building currently houses the Regional Office of Education.

Kane County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the county is ready to sell the building to the library district as part of a process to consolidate the space it uses.

“If the [library] board wants to go to that location, it seems like a wonderful place for a Geneva library,” Lauzen said. “I’d be delighted to work together with the library. I have respect and affection for [library board President] Esther Steel.”

The library has the right of first refusal when the county would sell the property. According to county records, the board formalized the library’s right of first refusal Dec. 12, 1989. Lauzen said the county has not put the building on the market yet while waiting to see what the library district will do.

“There have been two previous – perhaps outdated – appraisals, and we are in the process right now of receiving the current appraisal,” Lauzen said. “How I understand this is supposed to work – we bring ours, they bring theirs and we sit down and come to an agreement.”

Lauzen said as the county is serious about selling the property, officials have given the library 60 days to get an appraisal and then to negotiate a sale price.

“If the library wants to move forward, we are very serious.

We will do everything we can to accommodate them and be good public partners,” Lauzen

said. “We all serve the same constituency. It’s a gorgeous, safe, centralized location, and I’m very happy to work for a good conclusion. If it does not meet their needs, we will offer it to somebody else.”

The regional school office would have to move, but Lauzen said to which county property is not established yet. The former school, built in 1924, is on a 90,000-square-foot lot with a 24,332-square-foot, three-story building.

Library Trustee Bob Shiffler said his concern was buying a site without knowing what size building to put on it.

“I do not have another site in mind,” Shiffler said. “I am not sure how long it would take to put a building plan together, but if we have to do it in 60 days, we have to get started real soon.”

Library director Matt Teske said the board plans to meet with architect Michael Mackey again about a building plan for a new library, but has not set a date yet.

Setting out proper banquet for birds Over the years this space has been used to discuss birdfeeding dos and don’ts on a number of occasions. But with the winter weather we’re experiencing – with no end in sight, I might add – I figured it couldn’t hurt to revisit the topic once again.

Many people have called over the past couple of weeks, worried about our feathered friends and asking for advice on what to offer as part of a birdie buffet. But before we get into the nitty, and gritty, I want to issue a disclaimer. Hanging out a birdfeeder is like putting out a party invitation; the only difference is, you have no control over the guest list. That succulent suet cake may be just as irresistible to a squirrel or raccoon as it is to the woodpecker for which it’s intended.

The good news is, there are certain things you can do to, if not control, at least influence who or what comes to feed on your seeds. And you don’t have to hire a feathered bouncer to do it.

GOOD NATURED Pam Otto The first step you can take actually begins not at the feeder, but at the feed store. You know how at the butcher shop you can choose between the bargain cuts, all fatty and gristly, and the fancy cuts, with their picture-perfect marbling and soft-as-butter texture? Even if you knew nothing about meat, you probably could tell that one hunk is better than other just by looking at the price.

It’s the same with birdseed.

Some seed mixes are loaded, not with fat and gristle, but with “filler” grains that most birds want nothing to do with. Milo, for example, is a bulky seed with little nutritional value. It’s cheap to produce though, and it takes up lots of space, so you’ll find it in quantity in many

Getting back to the banquet, another must-have at the birdseed buffet – especially in winter – is suet cakes. Packed with high-calorie fat, these blocks provide the energy birds need to survive winter’s extreme temperatures.

As with birdseed, it pays to read the label when purchasing bird suet. Look for the words “beef kidney suet” on the label; this sort offers more quality calories than tallow or shortening. Also, if you’re tempted by suet cakes with tasty-looking nuts, fruits and seeds, make sure those added ingredients don’t outweigh the suet itself. While enticing, these garnishes aren’t as nutrient-dense as suet and might cause your suet cake to fall apart or erode away more quickly during a winter storm.

Now let’s get gritty. Grit is another element you may wish to add to your banquet.

Although not a food, it is an essential part of feeding for seedeaters. Because they have

no teeth to crunch their food, birds rely on grit in their crops to grind seeds in preparation for digestion.

You know those birds foraging along roadsides after the snowplow passes through?

More than likely, they’re after the dirt and sand those blades have churned up. You can make their job easier by scattering grit beneath your birdfeeding station, or placing it on a platform feeder.

Choose from commercially prepared grit, available at feed stores, or sand, if that’s what you have on hand. Some avid birdfeeders also recommend crushed eggshells, but be sure that the shells don’t harbor salmonella bacteria. Shells from boiled eggs are fine as-is, but if they’re from raw eggs you should bake them at 250 degrees for 30 minutes before crushing and “feeding.”

One final tip addresses the timing of your party. The species of birds that come to feeders are diurnal, or active during daylight hours. Yet some of your feeding area’s

biggest party crashers – namely raccoons and opossums – are nocturnal, or active at night. Even deer, which can do a number on feeders and your birdseed budget, usually feed at dawn and dusk and not peak daytime hours.

So, if you’re finding your feeders are a mess come morning, do the easy thing and bring them in each evening.

If you don’t want to bring them all the way inside, and risk drawing mice or other critters into your porch or garage, get a metal box or some galvanized garbage cans (which also are great for storing birdseed). Weigh the top down with a brick or two and, ta-da, the problem of midnight feeder marauders is solved.

Just be sure to hang the feeders back up again the next day, so the party can begin.

Although some birds, such as doves, pheasants and wild turkeys, seem to be attracted to milo (take note, our east St. Charles friends who actually do have turkeys at their feeders) most songbird species shun it and kick it to the ground. There it sits, attracting the attention of starlings and other party-poopers. If you don’t like these guys at your feeders, spend a little bit more on your seed; get the tender filet instead of the chewy shoe leather.

One seed you can’t go wrong with is black oil sunflower. A 50-pound bag might cost you $40 or more (less if you find a sale) but you’ll be rewarded with visits from all sorts of delightful guests – chickadees, nuthatches, finches and woodpeckers, to name a few.

It’s true, black oil sunflower seeds are popular not only

with birds, but also mammals – particularly squirrels.

If you would rather not have squirrels come to your party, try swapping sunflower seeds for safflower. Squirrels don’t care for it, but many songbirds do. If you do decide to try this method, be sure and introduce the safflower gradually, mixing it in with the sunflower seeds and slowly increasing the ratio. Just as you would be suspicious if your favorite restaurant switched menus overnight, so, too, are birds.

Another common method of deterring squirrels has been to add ground cayenne pepper to the seeds.

Squirrels can taste and feel capsaicin, the chemical that gives the pepper its heat, but birds cannot. However, studies have shown that even though birds lack the nerve endings needed to feel the pepper in their mouths, they still can have a bad reaction to the dust if it gets into their nose or eyes. Hence, this method is best avoided. Good party hosts don’t spatter their guests

Audit shows surplus in STC City cites cutting about 12 percent of expenses from fiscal 2008 to 2010, generating revenue KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – An audit of St. Charles’ last fiscal year shows the city continued its recent trend of posting a surplus in the general fund.

The audit by Sikich LLC. showed St. Charles ended fiscal 2013 with $39.5 million in revenues and $38 million in expenditures, resulting in a surplus of about $1.46 million in the general fund, according to a city news release.

The release noted that apart from a small deficit in fiscal 2011 at the height of the Great Recession, St. Charles has posted a surplus in the general fund since 2008.

According to the city, it accomplished this by cutting nearly 12 percent of expenses from fiscal 2008 to 2010 and by generating revenue.

Examples include the 2 percent alcohol tax and adjusted fees for building permits, special events, towing, vehicle impounding and administrative charges related to arrest bookings.

Meanwhile, the city reported its property tax levy remained steady while program and service levels were maintained.

“The expenditure reductions we established in fiscal years 2009 and 2010 during the economic downturn continue to benefit St. Charles citizens,” Finance Director Chris Minick said in a written statement. “[Fiscal year] 2013 expenditures remain $4.7 million lower than [fiscal year] 2008 levels, and the city’s tax levy has been held steady for five consecutive years.”

She was born Dec. 15, 1967, in Hammond, Ind. Jill grew up in Munster, Ind., and graduated from Munster High School in 1986. She attended the University of Illinois. She was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority and the gymnastic team.

After graduating from the University of Illinois, she became a flight attendant with American Airlines from 1992 to 2011.

Not too late to protect against flu Though illness is widespread, shots still could be effective

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Although the ideal time to get a flu shot is early fall, registered nurse Stephanie Farrell said it is not too late for individuals to protect themselves against the illness.

“You can still have the virus circulating as late as May,” said Farrell, a nurse in Cadence Health’s Community and Health Outreach Department.

“We are not too late.”

The most recent data from Centers for Disease Control indicate much of the United States was affected by widespread influenza activity for the week ending Jan. 18, and Illinois has been no different.

In Kane County, seven cases of flu-related intensive care unit admissions and no deaths had been reported as of the week of Jan. 5, according to the Kane County Health Department.

The Illinois Department of Public Health has reported that most of the hospitalizations and deaths affected those 50 and older. In Kane County, the age range was 22 to 74, with an average of 48, according to county data from the week of Jan. 5.

Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue and, more so for children, vomiting and diarrhea.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, flu activity has been widespread since late December.

“The strain of flu that is predominately circulating in Illinois and the country has historically been a more severe strain causing more hospitalizations and deaths,” the state agency reported in

In Geneva, 23 detached single-family homes were sold traditionally in December, up from 20 sold during that time in 2012, according to the data.

Traditional median home sale prices decreased slightly from 2012 to 2013 in Geneva, dropping from $355,451 to $350,000.

The number of detached single-family homes sold traditionally in St. Charles increased to 48 in December, up from 31 sold in December 2012. In addition, median home sale prices of those types of homes increased

to $328,000 in December, up from $260,000 in December 2012.

Traditional sales of detached single-family homes in Batavia dipped slightly to 11 in December, down from 14 in December 2012.

But median home prices for detached single-family homes in Batavia increased by 8 percent from December 2012 to December 2013, going from $303,000 to $329,750.

At the same time, there

have been fewer short sales than in the past.

For example, the number of short sales of detached single-family homes dropped by 17 percent in Batavia in December compared to the previous year.

Nancy Thunberg, managing broker at Coldwell Baker in St. Charles, is pleased with the data results.

“We are looking at a more normal market,” Thunberg said. “We have had such a

depressed market in the past few years. There’s a lot of pent-up demand.”

Thunberg said she is optimistic the trend will continue. She noted that between the third quarter of 2012 and the third quarter of 2013, the net equity for residential real estate across the nation rose by 2.2 trillion.

“People are getting equity in their homes again, instead of being under water,” Thunberg said.

SUGAR GROVE – The village of Sugar Grove received notice that Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services raised the village’s general obligation bond rating three notches, from A+ to AA+, the village announced in a news release.

There is one rating higher, that being AAA by Standard and Poor’s. This rating increase reflects Standard Poor’s overall assessment based on their research and analysis of the village.

A key component of the research consisted of Sugar Grove’s per capita buying income for 2017 being 161 per capita of the U.S. and a per capita market value of $90,520.

OPINIONS OUR VIEW: THUMBS UP/THUMBS DOWN Thumbs up to those who keep local school districts in mind when making donations.

There is no shortage of worthy organizations that rely on the generosity of the public. It is hard to go wrong donating to virtually any of them.

Our local schools seldom are top of mind when deciding what to do with unneeded items. But, in many cases, schools are an excellent match for some of our unneeded belongings.

The Kane County Chronicle cited several examples this week of local people helping out schools, including a Sugar Grove man who donated books, a fish tank and furniture to John Shields Elementary, and a tennis-loving St. Charles family that contributed dozens of rackets to the physical education department at St. Charles East and St. Charles North.

The key is to donate items that are in good condition and serve a purpose in a school setting. That can be a long list. Call or email your local principal if you have questions about what is appropriate.

We often bemoan the substantial burden school districts place on taxpayers. Donating spare belongings is not going to drastically reverse that predicament, but any way that schools’ needs can be met without taxpayers paying the price is a win-win.

Thumbs down to anyone abusing handicapped parking spaces.

Effective Jan. 1, fines went up both for drivers misusing disability placards and for physicians falsifying disability applications.

Financial punishments should not have to come into play to convince people not to game the system when it comes to handicapped spots, but if extra teeth to these fines helps dissuade a few more people, so be it.

“Our goal is to ensure that disability parking spaces are available for those who truly need that access to conduct their dayto-day activities,” Secretary of State Jesse White said in a statement. “My message is simple: If you don’t belong there, don’t park there.”

Since 2011, in Geneva and St. Charles alone, about 600 tickets have been issued for handicapped parking violations, although a small percentage of those ended up being voided. That is disconcerting.

Many of us have no idea how trying life can become on a daily basis while dealing with a disability. If you’re among that fortunate group, be grateful, and have the decency to respect this common-sense law.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A visible and direct impact To the Editor: Even barnyard philosophers need to have their facts straight if they are going to make fun of science.

Recently, a Big Rock resident made fun of global warming by saying how the Arctic icepack grew (Kane County Chronicle; Jan. 11, 2014).

However, the U.S. Navy, a much-respected organization, says otherwise.

According to information in the Wall Street Journal in its Jan. 12 edition: “Military scientists steer clear of saying why the ice is melting. ...

But the military views the retreat of the ice as fact. ‘Climate change has had a visible and direct impact

on the Arctic region,’ concludes the forthcoming Navy strategy proposal.”

With that being said, I can but assume that the water in big Rock is still bad.

Not on the right track It appears that Geneva Library Board Trustee Susan Shivers is the only one on the board with good common sense.

Our family has lived in Geneva for almost 50 years, and over the years we have made modest donations to the library.

But no more – not until they get their fiscal house in order.

And from what I read in the paper, it doesn’t sound like they are on the right track.

That is ridiculous I do not understand why the Geneva Library [District] has a consultant.

Why does the library director need help?

If he cannot handle the job, get someone else – $100,000 a year? That is ridiculous. I can’t see it.

If the GOP wants to win the governor of Illinois, they must stop mentioning Rauner’s money and get to the issues that are affecting Illinois.

Tuning in An Illinois legislator was on the radio today.

His biggest concern seemed to be Metra’s weather-related problems.

He then discussed raising the state’s income tax because our’s is not the highest.

Is he aware that not all states even have an income tax?

Then he discussed taxing services.

The most obvious one is to tax Internet purchases.

You hear very little about this, and I do wonder why.

Like the guy said, it’s hard getting up at 3 o’clock in the morning and not having a vacation for three years.

Heaven forbid that the public schoolteachers just can’t get ahead in this world while the rest of us do without.

It’s not only vacations.

This was a great little business that I am going to miss.

There are too many businesses moving out of Geneva and Batavia.

Man pleads guilty to sexual contact with three minors KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com A martial arts instructor has pleaded guilty to having sexual contact with three minors, including incidents that took place in Kane County.

Dean C. Fuerstenberg, 45, most recently of Minnesota, pleaded guilty Friday to three counts of criminal sexual assault, each a felony.

Two counts were relative to acts that took place in Kane County.

The third count Dean C. was relative to Fuerstenacts that took berg place in DuPage County.

The court proceedings took place at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, where Fuerstenberg has been held for the past two months.

On Nov. 19, Fuerstenberg suffered serious and permanent injuries while he was in custody at the DuPage County jail, according to a news release issued by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Relative to the Kane County charges, between June 2003 and November 2005, Fuerstenberg took advantage of his po-

sition of trust, supervision or authority as a karate instructor at a South Elgin martial arts school and engaged in sexual acts with two minors who were younger than 18.

Relative to the DuPage County charge, between May 2002 and May 2006 at a Roselle martial arts school, Fuerstenberg engaged in sexual acts with a victim who was younger than 18.

“Mr. Fuerstenberg was more interested in taking advantage of his position to satisfy his perverted needs than he was in looking out for the best interests of the children that he was responsible for mentoring,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said, according to the news release.

“His acts were disturbing, self-serving and unconscionable.”

The sentence is 7½ years for each Kane County count, to be served consecutively, and 10 years for the DuPage County count, to be served concurrent with the Kane County sentence.

According to Illinois law, Fuerstenberg must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. Fuerstenberg receives credit for at least 731 days served in the DuPage County jail.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia NORTH AURORA – The village is taking a second look at requiring residents to keep recreational vehicles behind a solid 6-foot fence after recent complaints from residents.

The requirement is part of the village’s new zoning code that went into effect in January 2013. Recreational vehicles include boats, campers, motorhomes, snowmobiles

and utility trailers.

According to the village ordinance, recreational vehicles and trailers can only be parked on a residential driveway from noon Friday to noon Monday year-round, as well as April 15 through April 30 and Oct. 1 through Oct. 15.

All recreational vehicles and trailers can be stored on residential properties only if they are located within a fully-enclosed permanent structure or are screened from view by a

solid wood fence or masonry screen wall at least 6 feet in height.

In addition, only one recreational vehicle or trailer can be permanently stored on a residential property and must be parked or stored on a hard surface.

The village stopped enforcement of the rule regarding screening about two weeks ago after receiving numerous complaints from residents, North Aurora Village Admin-

istrator Steve Bosco said.

“We are doing research on what other municipalities are doing,” Bosco said.

The issue will be up for discussion at the Village Board’s

Finalists announced for N. Aurora police award KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com NORTH AURORA – North Aurora police officers David Parr and John (Jake) Kerlin are this year’s nominees for the 2013 North Aurora Officer of the Year award.

The award will be presented Tuesday at the North Aurora Lions Club’s annual awards banquet at Gaslite Manor in Aurora. This award has been presented annually since 2005.

Police supervisors provide the nominations, and the Lion’s Club chooses the winner.

Parr was assigned to the fleet maintenance team in 2011 and is responsible for making sure that routine maintenance is on schedule and making decisions on what equipment to purchase for the new squads.

“Officer Parr has grasped this role and made it his own by developing his own style of managing the task,” according to a police department news release. Parr has been a member of the North Aurora Police Department for 16 years and is assigned to the night shift patrol.

Kerlin was nominated for the award in part for the actions he took on Nov. 5, when he was dispatched to check on the well-being of an elderly citizen.

Upon arrival, he found that the electricity had been turned off to the home because of a miscommunication with billing, the release stated. He assisted in resolving the problem; however, power could not be restored until the following morning, according to the news release.

The temperature would be dropping during the night, and the woman lived alone with no immediate family in the area. Kerlin offered to drive her to a hotel in the area and pay for the room out of his own pocket. The woman declined, since she did not want to leave her home.

Kerlin then took measures to ensure the woman would be able to reach out to emergency services should she need help during the evening. Since she had no working phone, he bought a plug-in phone with his own money and then found the woman’s phone service was disconnected.

He then was able to arrange for a neighbor to loan the woman a cellphone and also to keep an eye on her for the evening. The next day, he returned to check on the woman and found that the power had been partially restored but that her furnace was not working. He contacted a furnace repair company for her and arranged a time when they could come and look at it.

To ensure the resident would have the support she would need in the future, he arranged for Senior Services to contact her.

Kerlin has been a member of the North Aurora Police Department for 13 years and is assigned to the evening shift patrol.

Junior guard Ashling Davern, arguably the most active North Star as she shadowed Batavia standout Liza Fruendt, suggested she’d kept some adrenaline in reserve had the game extended beyond regulation.

As it was, Davern did just about enough despite the result, a 63-57 Batavia win that marked the Bulldogs’ tightest margin of victory in eight league games.

Fruendt finished with a team-high 20 points for Batavia (16-6, 8-0 UEC River), but did so in the face of constant pressure.

“I was able to play as hard as I was because I knew that my teammates had my back and that they would be on my help-side the entire time,” Davern said. “And that’s probably the biggest thing. North coach Sean Masoncup branded the team’s defense “The Special,” and called it a collection of a number of principles, albeit without naming them. One was visibly a diamond- or box-and-one.

After Fruendt crossed midcourt – usually with Davern on her hip pocket – another North Star or two encroached to force Fruendt into making a decision.

“We worked as hard as they did, if not harder,” Masoncup said. “That’s a talented team. They have a lot of weapons.”

North (10-11, 4-4) led as late as 4944 with about 4:30 to play as junior forward Nichole Davidson (gamehigh 26 points) continued to assert herself inside. Morgan Rosencrants (12 points, 12 rebounds) provided an important secondary option.

Fruendt still was in single digits with just more than five minutes to play in the game, but helped turn the Bulldogs’ final deficit into a 5049 lead with her speed in transition.

She added two second-half 3s after a rough start from the field.

“We kind of weathered the storm,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said. “I told them there’s no magic play we

needed to do to all of a sudden throw in. We have good basketball players.

Fruendt collected three first-half fouls, a rarity in a brilliant recent

stretch of scoring that included a career-high 51 points in a Jan. 17 win at Geneva. Referees whistled her third foul late in the second quarter amid a top-of-the-key scrum for a long rebound of a missed Fruendt 3-pointer.

Although consistent box-outs were a struggle in stretches, North challenged each loose ball, as the team continued adhering to Masoncup’s up-tempo brand of play.

Batavia missed sophomore guard Bethany Orman in that regard. Sidelined with a concussion, Orman was replaced in the starting lineup with freshman Mackenzie Foster, who helped spell Fruendt as a ballhandler at times.

Trailing by the final margin, North committed a turnover with 7.8 seconds left, prompting Masoncup to stop sending Batavia to the line. That strategy aside, the North Stars insist they aren’t done, long-term.

“We’re just going to keep going off of how well we played together and how hard we played and just keep going,” Davern said. “We have a game against Larkin [today], that we’re going to take it to them and that is just going to help us as we play Batavia again and we match up with Geneva again and eventually to regionals. So it’ll be great.”

AURORA – St. Francis has seen great success in recent postseasons by playing hardnosed, man-to-man defense, winning loose-ball battles and making gritty plays in crunch time.

The Marmion boys basketball team copied that formula nicely Friday, rallying past the Spartans in the second half for a 59-53 Suburban Christian Conference Blue victory.

“The big word this week was probably toughness,” Marmion senior point guard Michael Sheehan said. “We knew they were going to be physical. We had to match their physicality and be even more physical, and that’s what we did tonight.”

Sheehan’s 3-point shooting turned the game’s tide during the third quarter.

He made all four of his 3-point tries in the quarter as the Cadets turned a 28-21 halftime deficit into a 42-41 lead entering the fourth.

Sheehan also made his first 3-point shot of the fourth quarter, triggering a timeout from a frustrated St. Francis bench.

For the night, Sheehan made six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points.

The St. Charles resident’s 24 points were a career high, Cadets coach Ryan Paradise said.

“Mike can shoot the ball,” Paradise said. “He has to do so many things for us. He’s the leader of our team, he’s the captain, he’s usually guarding the other team’s point guard. With the pressure St. Francis puts on you, Mike didn’t come out once the whole game. That wore him down. So sometimes he’ll have an off shooting night where he’s having to guard the best player on the other team and handle the ball, and as a point guard, that wears on you.”

Marmion (9-10, 3-1 SCC Blue) scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter to go up, 49-41, but a driving basket by St. Francis guard Zach Prociuk drew the Spar-

Sheehan scored only three of his 24 points in the first half, and it looked like it might be another rough shooting night for the senior, who said he’s been up-anddown with his stroke this season.

“Sometimes it gets in my head, but I have a great coaching staff that tells me to shake it off and keep shooting,” Sheehan said. “That’s what I did tonight, and it finally paid off.”

The Saints trailed, 31-28, midway through the second quarter before Cole Gentry, who finished with 17 points, took rebounds coast-to-coast on consecutive possessions to put East in front to stay.

“We started off pretty slow,” East sophomore James McQuillan said. “We didn’t really have the energy at the beginning. It took us a little while to get the energy, but when we did everybody started to contribute and it ended up being a nice team win.”

from beyond the arc for the Saints’ first five points of the night. He finished with 18 points, hitting on all seven shots he took from the floor.

“James played great,” East coach Pat Woods said.

“He was perfect from the field, only missed two free throws, but a solid game overall. … He got a lot better defensively. We’re trying to get him to use his hands more and I thought he did a good job of that.”

left side to start East on a 9-0 run to close the first half, which ended with the Saints up, 44-34.

“Asquini hit a couple big 3s and Cole brought the energy again,” McQuillan said.

“Everybody kind of just followed Cole’s lead and we just stepped up our game and it paid off on the scoreboard.”

East scored the first six points of the second half to break the game open and continued to expand the lead throughout the final two quarters. Junior guard Zach Manibog, starting in place of the injured Dom Adduci, scored nine of his 11

points in the third quarter.

His 3-pointer from the right corner extended the Saints’ lead, 61-38, midway through the period.

After getting to the basket with relative ease against East’s man-to-man defense in the first half, the Sabres (2-21, 0-8) were held to eight points in the third quarter.

ELGIN – An explosive offensive first-quarter effort put the Larkin boys basketball in control Friday night against Batavia.

The Royals burned the nets for 25 first-period points as they defeated the Bulldogs, 64-40, in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division contest.

Larkin (16-3, 7-0 UEC River) scored the first 12 points of the game. Batavia scored its first basket at the 4:35 mark in the first quarter on Danny Pieczynski’s 3-pointer from the right corner.

Reserve Ryan Olson scored the only other Bulldog points in the first eight minutes on another 3-pointer. The first quarter ended with Batavia trailing, 25-6.

Olson led all Bulldog scorers with nine points.

Larkin controlled the glass and capitalized on Batavia turnovers to take control.

The Royals outrebounded the Bulldogs, 14-3, in the first half. Batavia turned the ball over 11 times in the first

16 minutes.

Guard Kendale McCullum led the Larkin attack.

He scored 10 of his gamehigh 21 points in the first quarter. McCullum also assisted two Christian Negron dunks with ally-oop passes.

“We came out and got jumped in the first couple of minutes.

We gave up 25 points Micah Coffey i n t h e f i r s t quarter, and that’s just not going to work with what we want to do,” Bulldogs guard Micah Coffey said. “We allowed them to kind of bully us when we were on offense and we weren’t able to get into a rhythm.”

“The guys were ready to play. If you were to tell me this 24 hours ago that we would come out and play the way we did [in the first quarter], I would have been proud,” Larkin coach Deryn Carter said. “Seeing it and being a part of it, I am more proud than I can explain. We are going through a lot with a lot of guys out, shuffling

lineups. To have guys come who haven’t played a lot of minutes and perform at a high level is a real testament to how hard they work.”

Play in the second quarter was more even as Batavia (6-12, 1-7) scored 14 points to Larkin’s 18 and trailed, 43-20, at the half.

Both teams came out flat in the third quarter, which ended with Larkin leading, 51-25.

“We fought pretty well in the second half, but we’ve got to come out and play a full game,” Coffey said.

“Give credit where credit is due, Larkin is a very good team,” said Batavia coach Jim Nazos, whose team flirted with an upset over the Royals when the teams met in Batavia. “We got a lot of things to get better at. That’s it, plain and simple. That’s the only attitude we can take coming away from a game like tonight. The good thing is we play tomorrow.”

The Bulldogs host UEC River conference foe Elgin tonight.

GENEVA – As is the case with most wins, the Geneva boys basketball team walked off the floor after defeating Elgin, 69-61, with their heads held high.

But it was during the game that Vikings’ coach Phil Ralston thought his team was looking down too much as Geneva often tried to dribble around Elgin’s trap defense, which forced 26 Geneva turnovers. While Elgin was quick defensively, Ralston pointed to spurts in the second and fourth quar- Nate Navigato ters as to how Geneva should have broken down the Maroons’ relentless defensive attack.

The Vikings (16-4, 5-3 Chris Parrilli Upstate Eight Conference River) scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter – all but one on pointblank lay-ups – to pull away from the pesky Maroons. Nate Navigato scored seven of his team-leading 18 points during the early stages of the fourth quarter to help Geneva open up a double-digit advantage.

“They did some nice things defensively, but I think we were very careless; 26 turnovers – a lot of it had to do with us being careless with the ball,” Ralston said. “I thought we passed out of it and did some nice things to pass the ball – made two, three passes and got layups. I think it was more or less the problems we had with careless passes.”

Elgin’s scheme defensively was to try and trap a Geneva ball-handler after he crossed the midcourt line. Once trapped, a third Elgin (6-12, 2-4) defender would look for the Geneva player most likely to get the next pass and go for a steal. Along with steals

at the initial trap, Geneva was frustrated with the third Elgin defender who made steals and subsequent outlet passes for easy layups.

The Maroons nearly pulled even with that formula, getting back-to-back steals and layups from Isaiah Butler to pull within 44-43 with 2:04 to go in the third quarter. Geneva responded with an 8-2 run over the last minute of the quarter with a Chris Parrilli back-door layup extending Geneva’s lead back to 52-46 after three.

“We didn’t handle the pressure as well as we wanted to, but we did some nice things as well,” Parrilli said. “We had a lot of back-door opportunities and started playing smarter offensively. We started moving the ball better against their trap and started looking for other guys. We saw a lot of good opportunities over the top and we just need to keep doing that.”

The Vikings finally solved the Elgin trap in the fourth quarter, shooting a perfect 8 for 8 from the floor while shoring things up defensively themselves. During Geneva’s 11-2 run to start the fourth quarter, the Elgin offense settled for five straight 3-pointers that missed as the Vikings opened things back up.

A Parrilli back-door layup from Pace Temple gave Geneva its biggest lead of the night, 67-51, and put the finishing touches on what was a great fourth quarter for the Vikings.

“We finally found it there in the fourth quarter as we got our bigs in it because we definitely had the height advantage,” Temple said. “It was close and credit to them. We just started to relax and really find our rhythm and get it to our scorers.”

Butler led all scorers for Elgin with 22 points, with 14 of those coming in the second half.

Parrilli shared team-high honors with Navigato, scoring 18 points, while Justin Durante added 12.

North goalkeeper Larsen regroups, picks Bowling Green A couple months of additional anxiety could end up paying off long-term for St. Charles North boys soccer goalkeeper Billy Larsen.

Larsen committed this week to play college soccer at Bowling Green after originally choosing Manhattan in the fall.

The North senior’s Big Apple visions unraveled quickly as follow-up discussion between his family and the Jaspers’ coaching staff prompted financial concerns that could not be resolved.

Larsen is a fan of New York City and has family there, so the snag hit hard.

“I was mostly frustrated not with myself, but the whole situation at hand,” Larsen said. “For an athlete to go through everything and commit, and then have someone tell him you can’t do what you’re dreaming of. …

It was a period of frustration, and then a period of acceptance, and then getting back on my feet, knowing every-

thing that I’ve trained for, it’s not over yet.”

Larsen went back to the drawing board for Round 2 of his recruitment. This time, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, Benedictine University and Hope College (Mich.) emerged as finalists.

Larsen, who plans to be a pre-med student, thought Bowling Green’s combination of quality academics and Division I Billy Larsen soccer was the way to go, and he committed Wednesday to the Falcons.

“Bowling Green produces more professional players and they have a better overall record than Manhattan has, so kind of looking back on it, I’m glad things worked out with Bowling Green instead of Manhattan in terms of academics and soccer, but socially I would have fit in at both places, and I loved both

Another perk of the change in plans: Larsen now will play alongside – and likely room with – Geneva senior midfielder Beck Nebergall, who also has committed to Bowling Green. Larsen and Nebergall are longtime club teammates with Campton United.

Larsen has a pair of younger brothers, Joshua and Jackson, who are both in North’s soccer program, although neither are goalkeepers. He said going to Bowling Green instead of Manhattan will “save some financial frustrations and what could kind of catch up with me in the future.”

He just took an official visit to the school earlier this month, and committed to play football there Thursday.

Still, his experience in a multifaceted attack throughout high school encourages the Kaneland senior tight end he’ll be fine. While moving the ball doesn’t figure to be as seamless as it could seem back home, Slamans is confident he can put himself in whatever position he needs to.

“I feel like it has helped with being in a good program like Kaneland,” said Slamans, who navigated an injury-plagued senior season.

“I think it’ll definitely help in the future with knowing how to get things done and go out and win some football games.”

Western Illinois, part of the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision, could use the jolt. The Leathernecks finished 4-8 in 2013 and are seeking their first winning season since 2010.

If the program is to return to prominence, Slamans could leapfrog some friends along the way.

Kaneland sophomore guard Dylan Vaca was expected to be a big contributor to the Knights boys basketball team this season, but the sharpshooter from Sugar Grove has seen his progress stalled by a broken right wrist. Vaca, however, hopes to return to the Knights’ lineup soon to boost Kaneland for the stretch run. In this week’s Weekend Chit-chat with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab, Vaca discusses his recovery timetable, what he’s been working on while wearing a cast, and sizes up the Knights’ leadership. The following is an edited transcript:

feels and everything, I’m going to try and get back around two weeks after the 30th, when I get my cast off. So I should be back around middle of February.

Tell me about the play when you got hurt.

Where are you at with your (wrist) health?

Well, we were in our first game at the Plano Christmas tournament Dec. 26th. We were playing Newark, and at the end of the second quarter, I was guarding their point guard, and I took a charge, and I kind of just fell back and landed on my wrist trying to brace my fall. I just landed wrong with all that weight. I hadn’t broken a bone before. … It hurt really bad and I couldn’t play the rest of the game, and I went to the doctor afterward, and he said it was broke.

I’m really at the last stage.

What’s it been like to have to sit these several weeks?

It’s been hard. It really stinks sitting out this many games, especially in the middle of the season. … You just want to be out there playing and helping the team but I’m just excited to get back to playing and looking forward to the rest of the season.

What’s rehab like? What can you really be doing now?

Right now I have my cast on, so I go to practice and work on my left hand because that’s one of the things I really need to work on. So I can get my left hand better, but after my cast is off, I don’t think I’ll need much rehab for my wrist. I think I’ll just have to wait a couple weeks until it strengthens back.

When you do return, what do you think you’ll add to the mix?

When I return, I hope to add more shooting to the team because that’s something we need. We have John (Pruett) attacking the rim and leading the team right now. I think when I get back, I can add more depth to our shooting and hopefully add more scoring, but we have had some kids on the the team step up.

Ty Carlson has hit so many big shots this year. How clutch is that kid?

Ty is a special player. He’s a three-sport athlete, he’s always in shape, always busy with sports. That just shows you how hard he works. In practice, he just wants to take that shot. He’s always one of the first ones in the gym practicing his shot, so he deserves it. You can tell he puts a lot of work in.

What are you most looking forward to about the rest of the year?

Just getting back with my team and finishing out the year strong, trying to win the conference and hopefully go farther in the playoffs this year because we have a really strong senior class this year.

I’m hoping we can get a lot farther.

DeKALB – It’s tough for Peter Deppe to remember exactly how many kicking camps he went to last summer.

He calls that period of time “camp season,” where he goes around and shows off his skills. Hundreds of specialists from around the nation do the same thing, fighting for the few precious scholarships that are offered to special teamers these days.

“I would say about seven to 10 [camps this past summer],” said Deppe, a senior punter and kicker at Almont High School who’s in town for his official visit to Northern Illinois. “It was a lot. It was a busy summer.”

Deppe verbally committed to NIU halfway through the 2013 season, as the Almont, Mich., native was impressed with the program’s recent winning tradition. Over the summer, he spent his time going to various camps around the Midwest, including the Kohl’s National Invitational Scholarship Camp in Wisconsin.

It’s a prestigious event where players have to earn an invitation, and where the Kohl’s staff will choose the participants for the Under Armour All-American Game.

Kohl’s hosts numerous showcase camps, and according to their website, 93.5 percent of FBS programs have at least one specialist on their roster who has attended a Kohl’s camp.

“You have to be there,” Deppe said of the scholarship camp.

At the camp, Deppe and the other punters were charted on distance, hang time and get-off time – the period from where a punter catches a ball to when he kicks it.

After the camp, Kohl’s rated the 6-2, 190-pound Deppe as the No. 7 punter in the nation. Deppe said he had interest from schools like Michigan State, Rutgers, Notre Dame and Iowa State, and NIU’s interest began when he went to the Hus-

Some of the other top-rated punters on Kohl’s list are committed to places like Ole Miss, Alabama, Michigan State, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

However, as highly rated as Deppe is, he will not be on scholarship as a true freshman. Instead, he’s getting a preferred walk-on spot and the plan is to be on scholarship as a redshirt freshman in 2015.

With schools limited to 85 scholarships, earning a scholarship as a freshman specialist can be difficult, especially when a school is already using one on a punter. That’s the case with NIU and senior Tyler Wedel.

Deppe said earning a scholarship right away depends on the school and what its need is.

Deppe, who said he did not have a punt returned his senior season at Almont and had 12 of his 19 punts land inside the 20-yard line, doesn’t think redshirting is a bad route.

“I’ve heard from Jamie Kohl, I’m good friends with him. He basically runs the whole Kohl’s kicking operation,” Deppe said. “He said it’s good to get into a school and for your first year redshirt and be the backup, just kind of get into the swing of things and roll in the next year and be the starter. I feel like that’s why this is such a good option for me.”

The Thompson Middle School eighth grade A boys basketball team completed a perfect season Jan. 16, defeating Haines Middle School in the finals of the Two Rivers Conference tournament to finish the season with a 24-0 record. The team won three tournaments, adding championship trophies from the Al Miller Classic in November and the Jackson Middle School Tournament in December. Thompson added a third after rallying from a 17-15 halftime deficit against Haines in the Two Rivers Conference finals to claim a 43-37 victory. Kids wrestling club starting in Geneva Geneva is starting a kids wrestling club. Coaches from Geneva High School and both Geneva North and Geneva South middle schools are volunteering as coaching staff as well as several dads in the area.

Coaches will work with the kids on their technique and

overall performance.

There will be several tournaments for the wrestlers to test themselves against local competition.

Practices will be in the wrestling room at Geneva High School and will start Tuesday and run through May 22.

The Geneva dance team won the Upstate Eight Conference title Jan. 18 at Metea Valley. All schools besides East Aurora competed at conference and 10 of the teams (Geneva included) did two dance routines. Geneva came in first with Neuqua Valley placing second and St. Charles North coming in third.

Coach Amy VanWagenen said of the team, “I could not be prouder of the Geneva varsity dance team becoming the Upstate Eight Conference champions on Jan. 18. Our goal was to place in the top three at conference and they worked so hard to accomplish that. Their work paid off, as they came in first place.

College uses sly tactics to solicit potential students Here’s an excerpt of an email my son received this week from the director of admissions at a Midwestern college: “Subject: Thank you again, Noah Dear Noah, Thank you for responding to my earlier message!

I appreciate your enthusiasm, and I am looking forward to staying in touch with you. Whether it’s sending along a guide that will help make your college search more successful or answering a question you may have, I enjoy helping ambitious students like you …

Thank you again, Noah!”

Nice email, but for the fact that Noah never actually responded to any “earlier message,” from her or any other college admissions officer. This wasn’t the only such email he received from her, either.

Last week, he received one thanking him for requesting her school’s admissions checklist, though he never requested it when it was offered in another email she sent, dated the day before.

What’s up with that?

In fact, it seems this isn’t the only school using such tactics to reel in pro-

TALES FROM THE MOTHERHOOD Jennifer DuBose spective students. We’ve gotten similar emails from other institutions, but Noah has yet to reach out in any of the ways claimed.

He’s a sophomore. We’re just beginning that exciting climb up the steep learning curve toward college, and, while we expected communication from prospective schools (our email address was shared with a database of college soccer coaches, but they’re not the ones sending these emails), we didn’t anticipate running into this kind of yucky recruiting ploy.

With college costs soaring and parents and students second-guessing how much they will invest and how deeply into debt they’re willing to go – given the reality that the prospect of finding a job upon graduation is currently so low – I understand that schools may be feeling the pinch.

That’s no excuse, though, for using

thinly-veiled marketing techniques designed to inspire eager, overwhelmed young people to engage in dialogue, and, in fact, a relationship under false pretenses. This process is challenging enough for kids and their families without prospective institutions of higher learning injecting even more elements of anxiety.

What kid needs to suffer an, “Uh oh, did I really send this woman a message?” moment?

The mama bear in me was not pleased.

With Noah’s permission, I drafted a reply to this admissions officer and expressed my concerns.

“My kid’s 15,” I added, “so yes, at this stage of the game, I’m the gatekeeper.

Your employment of such tactics only reinforces this decision.”

I also expressed that I was genuinely curious to know her thoughts on this subject, and asked if she was aware that she was quite likely turning off other prospective students and their families, too.

I have yet to hear a reply.

Did we blow it? Should we have been flattered by such efforts? I don’t think so. Don’t get me wrong, Noah’s a great

kid and a decent student, but fooled into feeling flattered? Not so much. Insulted, maybe. It may seem like a small thing, but think about it – isn’t it sad when someone is willing to blatantly deceive another just to get their attention?

This experience has served as another teachable moment of sorts in my efforts to help my kids to become critical thinkers and consumers. They don’t need to feel desperate to be courted – not by brands, potential friends or even, God forbid, the “holy grail” of American dreams – prospective colleges.

Perhaps this school really is a good fit for my son, but hey, if the behavior of their director of admissions is any indication, I kind of doubt it.

I suppose I should be grateful. That’s one less school visit we’ll have to make, after all.

When you go with your gut and your gut says “this stinks,” you gotta listen.

The return on that investment is worth it, every time. That, my friends, is an education worth getting.

‘Hours’: Paul Walker gives touching performance in one of his final roles

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post “Hours” is a small film, and would likely not be getting the modest attention it is were it not for the untimely death of its star, Paul Walker, who was killed in a car crash last November at age 40. Best known for his participation in the “Fast and Furious” action franchise – the seventh installment of which is reportedly being rewritten to accommodate the actor’s death – Walker always has projected a stolid, if less than electrifying, presence.

That remains the case in “Hours,” in which he portrays a frantic new father in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. In his quiet, workmanlike way, however, the performer creates a stirring portrait of paternal devotion.

Set in a New Orleans hospital, “Hours” is the story of Nolan Hayes (Walker) and his attempt to keep his newborn daughter alive after he is left alone to tend to her malfunction-

ing ventilator when the entire staff and all other patients are evacuated.

Aside from some brushes with armed looters, a stray dog and a rescue helicopter scared off by snipers, Nolan literally spends most of the film, which spans about two days, cooped up in a hospital room cranking a manual generator to keep his child breathing. In between cranks, he talks to the baby, who can’t breath on her own yet, about her mother (Genesis Rodriguez).

Mom, who has died in childbirth, appears in flashbacks and as a ghostly apparition. Nolan also rushes around the abandoned building looking for medical supplies, growing increasingly desperate as time passes.

As it does, Walker’s performance – along with the film – gets more and more engrossing.

Sure, the setup is kind of gimmicky. The ventilator’s balky battery will only hold a charge for a few minutes, which means that Nolan must constantly rush back and forth

between his infant’s side and whatever mission he’s on: tracking down more saline, flagging down help, trying to fire up the ignition of an ambulance with a flooded engine.

The fact that the character also has to provide a running commentary on the action is also a bit annoying, especially when the similarly themed “All Is Lost” proved that a spoken monologue under emergency circumstances is not just unrealistic, but dramatically unnecessary.

Still, the gimmick works, thanks to Walker’s surprising ability to explore – and to reveal – his character’s interior life. Compared to the “Fast and Furious” films, “Hours” is a chamber piece, but Walker wrings real pathos out of his instrument.

• “Hours” received two out of four stars. The film is rated PG-13 and contains brief violence, drug abuse, mild sensuality, some crude language and mature thematic material. It runs 97 minutes.

Text announcing pregnancy causes concern Parents want teen to Dear Abby: My daughter, who recently turned 21, sent me a two-word text message, “I’m pregnant.” She has been dating a marijuana-smoking young man for less than a year, and I’m disappointed by this outcome.

Her sister, who is a year older, already has two children by two men. No, they weren’t raised by a harlot. I adopted them when they were early elementary-aged children. It’s not my fault. I’m disgusted by their choices.

I haven’t talked with her yet. I won’t try to lecture her or tell her how she should live her life. I feel it would be best to say nothing if I can’t be positive. Suggestions? – Disgusted In The South Dear Disgusted: It would be better if you said nothing to your daughter while you are angry, or you may say something you will regret. Dear Abby: I’m about to be 17 and just started living with my mom after being a runaway for three months. During that time, I made friends with people who were not good for me. However, I still feel I need to cling to these people and be there for them.

As I write this, one of the girls I was closest to is in prison and will be there for a long time. I have to pretend to be fine and act as if I don’t care for her, but I do, desperately. Late-night snackers are prone to gaining weight Dear Doctor K: Is it true that eating late makes you gain weight?

Dear Reader: I’d heard the same thing for decades, but I wasn’t sure it was true. I had to do some research to answer your question.

Several recent studies have looked into this question. The results were not unanimous, but most studies show that eating late in the day does contribute to weight gain and other health problems.

In one study, researchers found that eating a big breakfast and a small dinner is better for weight loss than eating a small breakfast and a large dinner.

Ninety-three women with metabolic syndrome participated in this study. (Metabolic syndrome is a set of risk factors that increases your risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other health problems.) The women were randomly assigned to different diets. Group 1 ate a 700-calorie breakfast, 500-calorie lunch and 200-calorie dinner. In contrast, Group 2 ate a 200-calorie breakfast, 500-calorie lunch and 700-calorie dinner.

After 12 weeks, the researchers measured weight loss in both

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff groups. Women in Group 1 lost significantly more weight than women in Group 2. The women in Group 1 also had lower insulin, glucose and lipid levels. This shows that this eating pattern benefits overall health, as well as weight loss.

A problem with late-night eating is that most people tend to overeat at that time. We eat out of boredom, or fail to adjust our daytime calories to allow for a nighttime snack. Nighttime snackers are more likely to develop unhealthy eating habits, which can lead to weight gain.

Another factor that may come into play is the body’s circadian rhythm, or sleep-wake cycle.

One study suggested that our body processes food differently at different times of day. Another recent study, by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, found that the body’s circadian rhythm makes us hungrier in the

evening.

I’d bet the main reason that calories late in the day are burned less efficiently has to do with circadian rhythms. We 21st-century humans (the Homo sapiens species) and the Homo erectus and Homo ergaster species that preceded us go back 1-2 million years. Until the last few hundred years, all but the most affluent of us didn’t have much light after the sun went down. That must have meant that we ate during daylight and went to sleep soon after sunset.

I assume that over those 1-2 million years our bodies adapted to that reality. Our bodies probably are built to burn energy most efficiently at the time of day – for most of our history – we ate.

Whatever the mechanism, eating late at night does appear to contribute to weight gain.

If you’re trying to lose weight, put an end to those late-night snacks.

Dr. Wallace: I’m in the 12th grade. I love music, and after I graduate, I plan to major in education at the University of Illinois with an emphasis on music because I want to teach high school music and be the marching band director.

My only concern is that high schools in some areas of Illinois are freezing teacher’s salaries and have talked about cutting back music and athletic programs. It has been difficult passing school bond initiatives because homeowners don’t want tax increases.

My parents want me to major in mathematics. They think it will be much easier to be employed as a math teacher rather than a music teacher. I really want to be in the music field, but I wouldn’t be unhappy teaching mathematics. Since you are a former high school principal, which do you think would be in my best interest? – Nameless, Geneva Dear Nameless: School funding is often touchand-go and fraught with uncertainty because it pits school districts against homeowners who are always, and understandably, wary of tax increases.

Sometimes, in order to dramatize the necessity of a funding increase, school districts will confront the community with the possibility of having to eliminate popular programs, such as music and athletics. Occasionally, cuts in these programs really do take place, but usually the school district finds a way to keep them going.

My advice would be that you give yourself an extra measure of security. Major in music, with a minor in math at the university.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace That way, you have the flexibility of dual proficiency. And don’t forget that high schools always have plenty of teachers, but only one band director. This is a highly competitive position.

Dr. Wallace: My boyfriend and I have been together for two years.

We are both 18 and are in the 12th grade. He is a terrific baseball player, and he thinks that after he graduates, a major league baseball team will offer him a contract to play in the minor leagues in their farm system.

Of course, I’m also hoping that a team offers him a contract and that he will eventually make the major leagues.

But on the other hand, I’m worried that he will be having girls throwing themselves at him.

Girls love professional athletes, so it will be easy for him to see hundreds of girls while I sit at home wondering about his off-the-field activities.

We have discussed this, but my boyfriend said that he is going to concentrate 100 percent on baseball and that he won’t have time to fool around with girls. How can I cope with this possible problem? – Nameless, Miami, Fla. Dear Nameless: You’re being attacked by the green-eyed monster, otherwise known as jealousy. The only solution is trust. When your boyfriend tells you that he will concentrate on hitting curves, not chasing them, believe him.
