Fox River fire district to seek tax rate increase Board president: Funds needed to buy new equipment, raise firefighters’ pay

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District’s board has voted 5-0 to seek a tax rate increase on the April 7 consolidated election ballot.

Board President Jim Gaffney said the increase is being sought so the district can pay its firefighters higher wages, buy more equipment, meet the costs of maintaining its two firehouses and to set aside money if officials decide to establish a third firehouse at Crane and Bolcum roads in St. Charles Township.

The district, which serves residents in Wayne, Campton Hills and St. Charles Township, already owns the land that would be used for the third firehouse, Gaffney said.

The question asks voters in both Kane and DuPage counties if the extension limitation should “be increased from the lesser of 5 percent or the percentage increase

in the consumer price index over the prior levy year to 12.5 percent for each of the levy years of 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019?”

The ballot question also contains an explanation of how much additional tax would be collected each year, showing small staggered increases over five years, Gaffney said.

Gaffney said the increased amounts, to be collected on a house with a fair market value of $100,000, would be estimated to be $8.11 in 2015, $8.80 in 2016, $9.54 in 2017, $10.34 in 2018 and $11.21 in 2019.

“We want to bring wages up for a standard of living for firefighters,” Gaffney said. “We want to get them in a medium class of salary. Our firefighters start at $34,000, in comparison to other area districts, which start at $43,000 to $50,000.

What we are shooting for is a living, working wage in the $58,000 to $64,000 range, by seniority.”

Though he said the pay scale would be on the lower side of average, Gaffney said it would help the district keep experienced firefighters and paramedics.

A house with a fair market value of $100,000 now pays $96.13 in taxes to the district, Gaffney said. The district takes in $2.4 million in property taxes a year.

If the referendum is approved, it would bring in an additional $293,000 in 2015, $367,000 in 2016, $412,000 in 2017, $464,000 in 2018 and $522,000 in 2019, Gaffney said.

The first two years of the increase would be aimed at increasing wages and being able to pay a full-time deputy chief, he said.

In the third year, the district would start a reserve fund for future equipment and then put money away for building needs and repairs, and possibly the third station.

“By the end of the five years, we should be solid,” Gaffney said. “Then we can continue on and take down the debt, keep firefighters and be in good operating shape.”

That debt is the $1.9 million bond issue that allowed the district to get established.

Gaffney said the final payment on that loan is scheduled for 2028.

The referendum question will be filed Tuesday with the Kane County clerk, Gaffney said.

Historic Geneva Theater building sold Price is nearly $3.7M; broker says ‘Everyone knows that marquee’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Theater building, which is at 319 W. State St. in downtown Geneva, recently sold for nearly $3.7 million, records show.

“It’s the first time in over 40 years that the most iconic building in Geneva will have a new owner,” said Jake Finley, a broker with Conlon Commercial, who handled the sale.

The building’s former owner, the Carol M. Boose Building Trust, sold the property to Geneva Theater Building LLC on Dec. 1, 2014, for $3.68 million, according to county property records.

“A group of investors in Chicagoland who love Geneva and love the building bought it,” Finley said.

The theater was built in 1924. Its facade features a restored marquee, which was shown in “Road to Perdition,” a 2002 Depression-era gangster movie starring Tom Hanks, he said. The Boose family trust removed the theater during a renovation in the early 2000s and created a multi-use office building, Finley said.

“They kept the historic landmark that is still used in community promotions and events for the betterment of the city only,” Finley said.

“Anyone who knows Geneva, knows this building. Anyone who knows the western suburbs, knows this building. Everyone knows that marquee.”

Records show Carol Boose received an Historic Preservation Award for Excellence in Exterior Renovation last year from the city of Geneva.

The new owners plan to respect the historic nature of the building and focus on adding value to current tenants, the city, residents and the tourists that visit Geneva each year, Finley said.

The building’s tenants include Geneva Ale House, First State Bank, Subway, Firehouse Pizza, Geneva Shoe Repair, Weaver Partners, The Sugar Path and Valley Acupuncture, Finley said.

In another Geneva sale last year, Finley represented the buyer of the former Plass Appliance store at 1881 S. Randall Road. The 11,500-square-foot, bank-owned building was sold for $1.2 million to 1881 Part-

Mayor voices concerns about signs

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – With spring just a few months away, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke believes that aldermen soon should discuss the issue of temporary signs that pop up around the city during warm-weather months.

Schielke spoke to aldermen at Tuesday’s City Council meeting about the signs, which he said create clutter

throughout the city.

“People have taken it upon themselves to put signs in the city’s planters along Wilson Street,” Schielke said. “I think we need to talk about that.”

He also said people have tried to erect signs in the war memorial in front of the Newton House at Route 31 and Wilson Street. In addition, Schielke said that the intersection of Randall Road and Wilson Street “has become a sign haven” at times.

“I think we need to have control over it,” Schielke said.

The city has various sign regulations. One rule prohibits signs being placed on any property without written consent of the owner or owner’s authorized agent.

The regulations are designed in part to “preserve the beauty and the unique character of the city of Batavia and to protect the city against visual blight,” according to the city’s sign code.

There I was, living in my own home in Creston, IL and managing just fine. I had my good friends, my loving family and a home I enjoyed. Then it happened. One day you wake up and you think to yourself, “Hey. I’m not as young as I used to be.”

It kind of sneaks up on you and before you know it you start considering what the options might be as you face those big Charlotte Berg retirement decisions. My children live out of state and I knew that I wanted to stay near my friends, church and my community activities so my search began. I already had some dear friends living at Oak Crest and after visiting decided that the on-site availability of health care, location and surroundings were the perfect fit for me. Now, I was faced with the dilemma of making the decision to actually move.

So, I called up Oak Crest with some pretty specific requests. I wanted an apartment on third floor, looking north, near my cousin. Feeling pretty confident that my requests would not be easily filled, I sat back and relaxed. Imagine my surprise when mere weeks later I received a call telling me that my every wish was granted. I moved in and have to tell you I couldn’t be happier. I enjoy my apartment; I love my neighbors and I can participate in any number of events and activities throughout the day. As my Oak Crest neighbors and I say, “Be careful what you wish for at Oak Crest, because they just might come true.”

Seeing shredded shrubbery? Oh! Deer!

GOOD NATURED Pam Erickson Otto Walking along a woodland edge recently, I couldn’t help but notice how the tips of so many low branches – on shrubs and trees alike – looked really ragged. Frayed.

Shredded, even.

The damage was consistent, beginning at the base of the plants and continuing up almost as high as my head.

As I surveyed the scene, my brain played a little trick on me. What first came to me as the thought “Oh dear,” slowly morphed into the realization, “Oh! Deer!”

These chewed off – or, more accurately, torn off – twigs are a distinctive sign known as deer browse. Because the white-tailed deer, the native ungulate, or hooved mammal, we have in our area, have no upper incisors, they grab and pull as they forage. The result is vegetation that, at best, looks like it got a bad haircut, and, at worst, dies from the abuse.

Other top signs our resident deer leave behind: Tracks: Deer have “cloven,” or split, hooves, and leave behind prints that are vaguely heart-shaped, but with a

5 inches in length for large bucks. Also, you may notice that the same deer leaves two different-sized hoofprints.

Because the front legs bear more of the animal’s weight, the front hoofprints will be larger and deeper than those of the rear.

Scat: Depending on diet, deer scat can appear as piles of individual, acorn- or oblong-shaped pellets (typical in winter, when food is low in moisture) or soft clumps (in spring and summer, when vegetation is lush).

Trails and paths: Long, straight paths form in areas that deer visit frequently. Vegetation will appear trampled and stunted, and paths will become worn into the substrate. Mike Quinn, are this year’s nominees for the 2014 North Aurora Police Officer of the Year award.

The award will be presented Tuesday at the North Aurora Lions Club’s annual awards banquet at Fox Valley Country Club in North Aurora.

This award has been pre-

sented annually since 2005.

Police supervisors provide the nominations, and the Lions Club will choose the winner.

Voss became the department’s first evidence technician in 2012. As a member of the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, Voss worked two homicide crime scenes in 2014, according to a news release from the North Aurora Police Department.

Voss has been a member of the police department for 23 years and is assigned to the day-shift patrol.

McCoy is a veteran officer often leading in self-initiated activities, according to the release.

Earlier in 2014, new owners took over a local hotel, and McCoy recognized that several known gang members, known to be associated with drug-related crimes, had taken up short-term residence at the hotel, the release stated.

Through his efforts and in cooperation with other officers, he was able to compile a list of gang members and associates staying at the hotel, which allowed officers to better monitor the situation and alert the new owners to the propensity for problems.

McCoy has been a member of the department for nine years and is assigned to the evening-shift patrol.

Peat has been with the department for more than two

years. He joined the North Aurora Police Honor Guard and quickly took an active role in community events, the release stated.

His role has evolved to include being an active member of the Kane County Honor Guard, which performs throughout the county.

Last year, he was selected for the position of traffic officer, which involves addressing traffic problems through the village by coming up with workable solutions, the release stated. In addition, he typically plans traffic control for special events, such as parades and North Aurora Days.

Quinn was promoted to sergeant in July 2014. While on patrol, he was the first to

arrive at a gas station to find a man who was not conscious or breathing, the release stated.

Quinn noticed “track” marks on the man’s arms, which indicated that he might have just overdosed on heroin, the release stated. He administered a dose of Narcan, which negates the effects of heroin, and the man began to revive.

It was the opinion of those on the scene – officers and paramedics – that the man would have died if not for the lifesaving efforts of Quinn and the paramedics, according to the release.

Quinn has been a member of the department for eight years and is assigned to the evening-shift patrol.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – An Aurora man who broke into the home of an 83-yearold World War II veteran and stabbed him to death eight years ago must serve 55 years in prison, according to a news release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Hector M. Mauricio, 28, of Aurora, was sentenced Friday

by Circuit Judge Susan Clancy Boles.

According to state law, Mauricio must serve all of the sentence. He will receive credit for the 7½ years he already has served in the Kane County Jail and in prison.

He had pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in the 2007 death of Aurora Township resident Roscoe Ebey in September 2010.

SHIRLEY ANN COHEN Born: May 8, 1919 Died: Jan. 21, 2015 Shirley Ann Cohen (nee Silver) of St. Charles, Illinois, died on January 21, 2015. She was 95 years old.

Shirley was born on May 8, 1919, in Belvidere, Illinois. She married the love of her life Marvin Cohen, of Elgin, Illinois on June 15, 1943.

Marvin truly cherished her. After 53 wonderful years of marriage, her beloved Marvin, passed away in 1996.

Shirley was the dear daughter of the late Dorothy and Louis Silver of Belvidere, Illinois the founders of Louis Silver Scrap-Iron Metal. She

is survived by her daughter, Linda Cohen of St. Charles; and by two brothers, Allen Silver and Morton (Elaine) Silver of Belvidere.

Shirley, a loving homemaker, was known for her baking skills.

Her immaculate kosher home was often filled with the aroma of her ‘one-in-a-million’ banana cake and scrumptious brownies. In addition to baking, she also enjoyed cooking, reading biographies, knitting, needlepoint, gardening, and aquatic classes at Delnor Health and Fitness Center. She was alert, healthy, trim, always impeccably dressed and a very generous person who would never divulge her age.

Shirley was a lifetime member of Hadassah, a member of the Fox Valley Order of Eastern Star Chapter #265, (she was Esther), and a former pink- lady volunteer at Delnor Hospital. She thoroughly enjoyed living in St. Charles.

Funeral services were held at Shalom Memorial Park, 1700 West Rand Road in Arlington Heights, Illinois at 1:00 p.m. January 22.

Antlers: These bony structures, which basically are extensions of a buck’s skull, emerge each spring and are shed each winter – usually in December and January in our area.

Now is a great time to spot recently shed antlers. However, please remember that it is unlawful to remove any natural objects, including antlers, from parks and forest preserves. And if you go hunting for shed antlers on private property, make sure you first obtain the landowner’s permission.

Left on the ground, shed antlers serve as an important source of calcium for a number of woodland creatures, including mice, voles, chip-

munks and squirrels. Older sheds will often bear the marks of the gnawing action of these animals’ constantly growing incisors.

Look for places that have steady food sources and good hiding places, and you’ll probably find signs of deer – maybe even the animals themselves. Bear in mind, though, that deer are crepuscular, which means they are most active at dawn and dusk.

Open woodlands (those that have been maintained via prescribed burns and invasive brush removal), cornfields and even yards – especially those with birdfeeders – in exurban and rural areas are likely to support somewhere between several and many whitetails.

Campton Hills cancels 2 Village Board meetings

Batavia-area moms invited to open house

CAMPTON HILLS – Campton Hills officials on Friday canceled a rescheduled Village Board meeting, the second time in a week that a meeting had been canceled.

The regular meeting was canceled Monday because of the lack of a quorum, which is the minimum number of members required to attend.

The rescheduled meeting on Friday night also was canceled, Trustee Harry Blecker said, because all of the meeting’s business could be conducted at the next regular meeting in February.

“We looked at it and said, ‘There isn’t anything we can’t put off until the next regular meeting,’ ” Blecker said. “There was nothing that needed to be done like now. We just thought we’d be better off saving village money and everybody’s time.”

The next regular Campton Hills Village Board meeting is Feb. 3.

BATAVIA – Mothers looking to become involved in the community and meet other moms are invited to a new member open house for the Batavia Mothers’ Club Foundation.

Anti-gay group sued college over flier restrictions

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – A federal judge has ruled against Waubonsee Community College after two members of an anti-gay group in July filed a federal lawsuit against WCC, claiming their free speech was violated when they were not allowed to pass out fliers at the college.

Wayne Lela and John McCartney, members of the group Heterosexuals Orga-

nized for a Moral Environment, filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court on July 16. The suit said their right to free speech was violated when they were not allowed to distribute fliers at the college’s Sugar Grove campus last year.

“Allowing plaintiffs to exercise their First Amendment rights on WCC’s campus does not amount to the college endorsing [the] plaintiff’s views or speech,” U.S. District Judge Robert Gettleman wrote in an opinion and order he issued this week. “In fact, as plaintiffs point out, the United States Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has publicly stated that its policies should not be carried out in ways that impair First

Amendment rights.”

Gettleman granted Lela and McCartney’s motion to preliminarily prevent WCC from denying them access to the campus for purposes of leafleting. They now must submit to the court on or before Monday a written proposal for a reasonable time, place and manner for leafleting, according to the order.

Gettleman on Wednesday is set to make a definitive preliminary injunction order. In response, Jim Sibley, WCC’s executive director of marketing and communications, wrote in an emailed statement: “While we await the court’s final determination, we consider this a matter of pending litigation. Waubon-

GENEVA – The Illinois Department of Natural Resources will provide $1.1 million to remove a dam structure from the Fox River in Geneva, specifically the causeway at the Fabyan Forest Preserve.

The funding will cover costs for engineering, removal and shoreline restoration.

An intergovernmental agreement between the Kane County Forest Preserve District and the Department of Natural Resources was ratified by the forest preserve commission Jan. 13.

Monica Meyers, executive director of the forest preserve district, said in a statement that the agreement comes at a perfect time.

“We’re already working at Fabyan Forest Preserve on an island improvement project right now,” she said.

“The causeway removal would have been the last part of that project, but we couldn’t move forward until funding was secured.”

Portions of Route 25/Stearns Road between the railroad tracks and Gilbert Road will be reduced to one lane from 9 p.m.

Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday to permit the delivery of bridge deck beams to the project.

Traffic will be reduced to one-way travel controlled by flaggers, with several full traffic stops for up to 15 minutes or longer.

The public is asked to avoid the area during this work and seek alternate routes when possible.

Motorists affected by this night work are advised to pay attention to the flaggers and exercise caution while traveling through the work area.

More time for public comment Participation from the public should be valuable to the officials who represent them. So what a wonderful dilemma Batavia City Council members had recently, when they debated over when public comments should be allowed at their meetings.

Should the comments come at the beginning of the meeting, as a convenience to visitors who might not be able to stay for an entire meeting? Should they be allowed at the end of a meeting, so those interested in speaking may listen to discussion of the issues and then make a more informed comment?

How about both?

It is possible to have such

comments allowed twice, even for items not listed on the meeting agenda. That’s standard at some board meetings, such as in Kaneland School District 302. At Kaneland meetings, it’s not unusual to have different visitors speaking at both the early and late opportunities during a given meeting.

It’s important to note that not every board is fortunate enough to have such a dilemma. The system works best when residents and others affected by the board discussions want to show up and speak. And they should be heard.

It’s a credit to Batavia officials that they recognize

the importance of welcoming feedback from residents and other stakeholders.

Public comments previously were welcomed at the end of the board’s meetings, but that portion since had been moved to earlier in the meeting.

Batavia Alderman Michael O’Brien, who favored moving comments to the end of a meeting, said: “I would not like anyone to feel that they are unable to speak to us as a body. We should listen to the people we work for, the residents.”

We feel that way, too. And two opportunities to speak would represent the best solution.

The absurd reality of child-care costs

An analyst said she just barely broke even.

“Yes! That’s me. I’m losing money going to work today.

But I’m late! Can we talk later?” said another woman rushing to the office after dropping her kids off at a day-care center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

The fourth mom I talked to was so underwater, the family simply couldn’t afford for her to work. So she quit her job as a fraud investigator for a financial institution because child care would have consumed so much of her paycheck.

This is the absurd reality so many middle class families face, and it’s especially devastating for working mothers.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

That’s why about 15 minutes into Tuesday’s State of the Union speech, women across the country – Republicans, Democrats, independents and apolitical sideliners – whooped and hollered when President Barack Obama acknowledged the child-care crisis.

“It’s time,” he said, “we stop treating child care as a side issue, or a women’s issue, and treat it like the national economic priority that it is for all of us.”

Yessss, we all said.

“I applauded. I cheered,” said Erin Hackney, 35, the fraud investigator who quit her job to stay home with her kids, now ages 9 and 6, in Burke, Virginia. “Because women and the value of the work that women do is constantly undervalued in our society.”

She loved her job. And she

was good at it. And she hated leaving.

So, what’s wrong with a little time off to be with the kids? Scrimp and save a little, make do, detractors say.

Raise your kids, and once they’re in school, go back to work.

It’s just two or three years off, said my family members who wanted me to quit working.

But it’s never that simple.

The mommy-track penalty ends up with huge, long-term costs.

Two years off usually means a complete career rebuild.

One year away from some highly skilled jobs is like a 10year hiatus.

The state of American child care?

It’s a mess, a mishmash of pricey day-care centers with waiting lists a mile long, in-

home day-care operations that are either homey, sketchy or both, and insanely expensive nannies and au pairs who are totally out of reach for most people.

It’s friends and family picking up the slack, and quiet prayers while racing down the highway shoulder to pass the traffic jam and make the pickup deadline.

Meanwhile, study after study shows these are some of the most crucial developmental years for children, and we either make it financially impossible for parents to stay with them or we pay caregivers less than we pay janitors to nurture our country’s future.

We need America to know how absurd this is.

We also need to know that America can do this – and has done it before.

I love that Obama men-

tioned the wartime nursery schools where Rosie the Riveter dropped off her kids so she could go rivet.

Check out some of the footage of women in shipyard coveralls and pin curls dropping their children off at these day-care centers. It was considered a patriotic duty to put your kids there, and the curriculums at 2,500 centers were educational, inspiring and nurturing. Kids got snacks and hot meals, and some even brought mom home a roast chicken wrapped in foil so she could rest up in the evening after a hard day at the factory. All in the name of war.

It’s time that we put this much care, importance and universal consideration – men and women – into caring for our children.

But now, it has to be in the name of our future.

Some need home phones This is in response to “That is ridiculous.” I have disability, and I spend all day long at my computer. I have to have a regular house phone in case I get sick. My cellphone is so small, I can barely find the numbers sometimes. I think some people should think before they speak.

What a friend It was bad enough that President Obama snubbed Paris and other delegates of the world by not marching in a show of unity against Islamic terrorism. But the best was yet to come. This week, United States Secretary of State John Kerry brought James Taylor with him to Paris to serenade the French ... with “You’ve Got a Friend.” Seriously, you can’t make this kind of stuff up.

However, to vilify an elected official using such paltry and offensive language shows a lack of civility and a bankrupt vocabulary. It is normal to expect that kind of vindictive language and rancorous animosity from America’s bitterest foreign enemies. But Americans are expected to behave better. No president, regardless of political party, actions or race, deserves to be subjected to such invective or criticized by such hurtful language of a personal nature.

As Americans, we’re better than that. And it’s incumbent upon all of us to speak more respectfully of the president, and, by doing so, set a better example for our children.

As far as how to save money, I think the simplest thing to do is to stop calling so many people when you don’t even need them.

The last two times I was called for jury duty, I was told I had to sit there. After sitting for three hours, they sent half of us home – 50 people. They didn’t need that many. Why not have the cases come in on Monday, and those who elect to have a jury trial, have the jury part of it start on Tuesday? Sure, it would be a little more effort for the attorneys, but it would not inconvenience so many people.

Then, if you don’t need so many, you don’t even have to ask them to come.

I realize it’s still kind of a headache to not know if you’re going to be needed for that week, but it would really improve things.

Then you wouldn’t have to call in so many people and having to pay them. I would strongly encourage them to stop wasting the time of so many citizens when, routinely, they’ll call 100 people and end up needing no more than 20.

5 charged in Batavia burglaries KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Five Naperville residents were charged in a series of car burglaries in Batavia that took place early Friday morning.

Christine L. Flood, 19, of the 1000 block of North Mill Street; Amanda E. Gonzalez, 20, of the 1100 block of North Mill Street; Julian P. Pecoraro, 19, of the 500 block of Cassen Road; Brennan M. Rafferty, 19, of the 700 block of Bennedetti Drive; and Austin J. Smith, 21, of the 1800 block of Hilltop Court, were charged.

Each will face seven felony counts of burglary to a motor vehicle, according to a news release from the Batavia Police Department.

They were taken to the Kane County Jail to await a bond call hearing set for today.

At 3:51 a.m. Friday, a resident of the 600 block of Blackhawk Drive observed two people attempting to gain access to a neighbor’s vehicle, the release stated.

The resident confronted the pair, who ran away and got into a car, police said.

According to police, the resident took note of a partial license plate number from the car as it left, and called 911 to report the incident. Responding patrol units located the vehicle, and an officer stopped it in the 400 block of Main Street.

An investigation revealed that the car was occupied by five people, as well as numerous proceeds from recent vehicle burglaries, police stated. Police say the suspects had been burglarizing unlocked cars throughout the Tri-Cities area.

The Batavia Police Department recovered a large number of stolen items and is asking anyone who had items stolen from their vehicle to contact their local police department to file a report. Police said the investigation will remain active as additional victims come forward to claim property.

In response to the recent coyote articles, here are some facts and opinions about coyotes. As an avid hunter/trapper of deer, rabbits and pheasants, there is a drastic difference in the population numbers than the last 10 years. Where I used to see good numbers of all mentioned species, rarely is an outing where I see more of these animals vs. coyotes. Coyotes have and are growing at a blistering pace.

If you think it’s four or five, it’s more like six or seven. The only solution before some innocent child – playing outside, maybe enjoying a snack – is injured or possibly attacked, is to humanely destroy a controlled number of these extremely cunning, vicious and predator-free animals.

Hindsight is 20/20. Let’s be smarter than the coyote, before it’s too late.

Makindu has come a long way Congo native making his mark for Ramblers after gaining eligibility

OOSEHEART – Mooseheart boys basketball’s Ceda Makindu doesn’t talk a lot of trash on the court.

But at least Makindu now has that option.

Neither playing basketball nor turning phrases in English were possibilities for the Congo native when he came to Mooseheart in October 2012, but the past 2-plus years have been filled with victories – in the classroom, on the basketball court and in the courthouse.

“It’s amazing,” Makindu said. “I can talk to people, I can write by myself, I can go anywhere in America and I can defend myself in English.

“When I came here I used to use Google translation, and it was hard. … It was hard for me to say ‘hungry,’ and it just translated into French.

It’s amazing now I can talk to people and take care of my own business.”

Makindu, a senior, is playing his first season for the Ramblers and only was added to Mooseheart’s active roster after winning a legal challenge Dec. 1 regarding his eligibility status in accor-

This year, Makindu is much more, working his way into the starting lineup despite minimal exposure to the sport growing up in Congo. He worked out with the Ramblers in the past but coach Ron Ahrens said the athletic, 6-foot-4 forward still faces a steep learning curve since he came into the season lacking game experience.

One of his early pitfalls was becoming infatuated with the 3-point shot.

The St. Charles North junior guard’s history of being gunshy no longer is being tolerated by North girls basketball coach Sean Masoncup, so she’s letting it fly, with great results. On Friday, Helsel made 4 of 5 shots from beyond the 3-point arc to help the North Stars roll past Streamwood for a 70-40 Upstate Eight Conference River win.

“In the past I was always more of a distributor, but this year he’s like ‘OK, Kyla, you actually need to start shooting this year,’ and he just started getting mad, so I was ‘OK, I’m going to start shooting,’ ” Helsel said. “And I ended up making them, so I was like ‘OK, great.’ ” Masoncup said Helsel is shooting around 40 percent from 3-point land this season.

“We’ve really been begging her to shoot,” Masoncup said.

“Because when she shoots and [Ashling Davern] makes hers … that opens up the floor for

Morgan (Rosencrants) and Claire (Jakaitis). If we can do those things, we’re a tough team.”

And then there’s No. 33, Nichole Davidson. Davidson, who surpassed 1,000 career points in a win this week against Hoffman Estates, is on her way to hitting more round numbers after scorching the Sabres for a game-high 24 Kyla Helsel points, 16 coming during the first half.

While Davidson did much of her damage attacking the rim and drawing fouls, Helsel scored 12 of her 14 points from deep.

Helsel said she’s much more confident in her perimeter stroke this winter.

“Actually over the summer we had a 10,000 shot club – we had to shoot 10,000 shots throughout the summer,” Helsel said. “I did it, and I obviously improved my shot.”

Davidson and Helsel were among four North starters to reach double figures, with Jakaitis and Davern adding 11 points apiece.

Guard Cayla Hawkins made four 3-pointers and the Sabres canned six through the first three quarters but their shooting touch deserted them as the game spiraled out of control late. Streamwood was within 37-29 early in the third quarter.

The Sabres typically are a strong rebounding team but couldn’t keep tabs on all of North’s size under the basket.

“We knew that was going to be a problem because we started a small lineup, and we hoped that we could get away with it,” Sabres coach George Rosner said. “We also knew that because of the way they play, they were going to press us, so we tried to put the best press-breaking lineup in there, which is our smaller lineup, and then we’re giving

away something.”

Masoncup viewed Friday’s matchup as a potential “trap game” after North (15-7, 6-3) recently played high-stakes conference games against Geneva (a loss) and St. Charles East (a win). But North’s focus tightened as the game unfolded.

“That whole second half, from what my coaches tell me, I don’t think we didn’t let them in the paint, and that what was our job. We didn’t do it in the first half,” Masoncup said.

“And then the other big thing is we made the extra pass.”

Masoncup, also North’s boys tennis coach, spent his afternoon being honored as coach of the year by the Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association in a lunch ceremony at the Vaughan Athletic Center in Aurora.

“It was a great day,” Masoncup said.

Makindu hails from Kinshasa, Congo, the African nation’s capital city of more than 7 million people. Congo “has been at war or something like it for a generation,” as described in a 2014 National Geographic article about the country’s many troubles.

Makindu said, “we don’t really have a good situation there,” so he was eager to embrace a U.S. education, which he hopes to continue in college.

St. Francis enjoyed a slim, 34-30, edge on the glass but limited the Eagles – who have a penchant for the perimeter – to 8 of 24 shooting from long range.

“Oh, yeah. There were possessions that game where I was like, ‘Wow. We’ve gotten so much better since the last time we played them,’ ” Shaw said. “It’s really surprising. It’s really great to hear that, to feel that.”

In the girls game, Eagles junior forward Gabi Galbato, one of three Geneva Middle School North products in the team’s starting lineup, scored each of Aurora Christian’s nine points in the first quarter. Only two other Eagles even attempted field goals during that span.

Rebounding ace Natasha Brown snapped the streak with a pair of free throws with 6:21 remaining before halftime, but those marked the Eagles’ lone points of the second quarter.

Aurora Christian (14-7, 1-4) ultimately endured a scoring drought of 11 minutes, 23 seconds before Galbato split a pair of free throws late in the third.

“Our girls, they’ve been

playing really solid defense recently,” Spartans coach Mike Phillips said. “So they came out and did it again.”

St. Francis sophomore Mia Mazza drilled two treys in the first half to complement a dominant transition game that persistently hounded Eagles’ ballhandlers. The Spartans (127, 2-1) essentially seized command on a sequence with just less than two minutes to play in the second quarter.

Moments after freshman guard Christine Fasana swished a baseline jumper, she swooped in for a steal and converted a three-point play.

“Yeah, we do have a lot of young starters this year,” Mazza said, “and I think that’s really been helping the team. They bring a lot of intensity to the game.”

Another Spartans freshman, Antwainette Walker, helped the hosts build a 31-11 halftime lead after a shaky start.

Walker scored all six of her points before the break while contributing defensive energy and challenging Brown, who recently eclipsed 1,000 career rebounds, on the glass.

WHEATON – Only four other school banners flank St. Francis’ on a side wall in the Spartans’ Spyglass Center.

If there’s an upside for boys and girls basketball teams in the Suburban Christian Conference, it’s this: Coaches need not preach the importance of short memories. The schedule promotes them just as well.

No matter the motivation, both Spartans teams responded to early-season road losses to Aurora Christian on Friday. St. Francis’ boys pulled away after halftime in a 66-52 win after the girls rolled, 47-19, to open a doubleheader.

“It really gives us a chance to focus more on a core amount of teams and not a lot of different teams,” said Spartans senior forward Mike Shaw, of Wayne. “You really can tell the teams and what they do.”

After the half, the Spartans boys (10-8, 2-1 SCC) channeled their best sequence of man-toman defense against the Eagles (9-5, 2-2) to date.

St. Francis shrugged off Eagles guard Wes Wolfe’s 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer and immediately began creating distance from its 31-27 lead at the break.

“They just get in your face and really pressure you hard.”

Aurora Christian junior RD Lutze said. “And when they pressure you that hard, they also have good help-side, so if you drive it, they’re right there.”

Turns out none of St. Francis’ energy was lost on the offensive end. A common second-half sequence found the Spartans snaring a rebound, then briskly pushing the ball up the floor.

Junior guard Gabriel Johnson (21 points), Shaw (12) and junior forward Nick Cooney (nine) spread the wealth as finishers. Jake Wolfe sparked Aurora Christian with 11 points, while Pat McNamara and Zach Singer scored eight apiece.

Marmion closes strong to top Montini

From the moment he stepped on the field for the first time in 1953 right up through last season when he would drop by the ballpark with that big smile and little-kid enthusiasm, Ernie Banks enjoyed a love affair with Wrigley Field and its fans unlike any other in baseball.

He was Mr. Cub and no other player in franchise history – or in the club’s future – will ever be adored in the same way.

Banks died Friday in Chicago, according to Mark Bogen, who represents the Banks family. Banks’ wife, Liz, will hold a news conference at noon Sunday.

He would have been 84 on Jan. 31.

The baseball world lost one of its biggest boosters.

“I just remember Ernie was never in a bad mood,” former Cubs manager Dusty Baker said in 2013.

Hobbled Esp helps push Cadets past Suburban Christian rival

“I said, ‘Relax. We have been here before – 3:21 to play and down by four,’ ” Currie said.

The Cadets took a deep breath and responded, outscoring Montini 9-1 the rest of way to escape with a 52-48 victory.

Two big tip-ins by senior center Evan Pickard help to put Marmion ahead and senior forward Jake Esp sealed the game with three free throws in the last 8.6 seconds.

“I really don’t get nervous,” Esp said of the pressure situations. “I like going to the freethrow line up by one or down by two with 10 seconds left. “

Esp was sidelined all week with an ankle injury and was questionable for Friday night’s contest. He wore an ankle brace, and while not having a lot of mobility, was able to play the majority of the contest.

It was a Jake Esp tough shooting night for Esp, who made just two shots from the floor and finished with 10 points. He shot an airball on a 3-point attempt as Marmion tried to rally in the fourth quarter.

“It hurts,” Esp said after the contest. “It started to chafe toward the end. It bothered me when shooting. I couldn’t push off.”

But still Esp found a way to score seven fourth-quarter points for the Cadets.

Over the holiday break Canaan broke the York Jack Tosh Holiday Classic tournament record for most 3 point field goals made.

Joe Myhre is a swimmer for St. Charles North and the men’s swimming and diving co-captain.

He was the Neuqua Valley Invitational Champion in the 50 free and 100 free, Neuqua Valley Dual meet winner in 100 back and 50 free, Metea Valley Dual winner in 100 free and the Stevenson Invitational winner in the 50 free.

Dom has led the St. Charles East Bowling Team with the highest average this year and helped the team set the state record for highest team score in a match this year.

Senior, Abby Novak, averaged 15 points, 12.75 rebounds and 2.25 blocks at the Montini Christmas Tournament.

WEST CHICAGO – Geneva freshman Stephanie Hart was money on her first four shots from the field and her eight first quarter points helped propel the Vikings to a 48-25 Upstate Eight Conference River win on the road Friday against West Chicago.

“I just kept attacking the basket and I was driving, trying

to get other people open. I just kept playing basketball,” Hart said of her performance.

Her coach, Sarah Meadows, approved.

“We’ve been wanting Steph to get more offensive-minded,” Meadows said. “She came out with a different mindset tonight, and it was nice to see.”

The Vikings took command in the first. After the Wildcats tied the game at 2 apiece, Geneva opened up a 15-2 lead with 1:55 to go in the opening quarter, forcing the Wildcats to take their second timeout.

“They are obviously a good team, they are starting to put things together,” West Chicago coach Kim Wallner said of the Vikings, particularly of their full-court press. “They antic-

First-quarter run paces Vikings past Wildcats

Former St. Charles High soccer standout Anne Poulin (class of 2000) is among the four-person St. Charles East Fighting Saints Hall of Fame class that will be honored before today’s 6 p.m. boys basketball game against West Chicago.

Poulin, a Batavia resident, remains active in soccer as a club coach with Strikers Fox Valley, an assistant girls high school coach at St. Francis and maintains connections in college soccer and through the regional Olympic Development Program. She also is active with multiple soccer-related charitable organizations. Poulin, whose brother, Tom, coaches boys basketball and softball at St. Charles North and sister, Ruth, coaches girls soccer at North, spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab for this week’s Weekend Chit-chat. She touched on her glory years with the Saints (which included four straight IHSA state titles), her injury-shortened college career at Arizona State and her family’s ties to North. The following is an edited transcript:

How would you characterize your high school soccer playing experience?

It was great. Can’t complain about the experience I had and the four years I was able to spend with my teammates, and the success of winning four times was pretty special.

How well prepared for college soccer did you feel after your time at St. Charles?

CHARLES’ ANNE POULIN ical units. … But that was my first big trip in realizing how great the sport is, how it transcends language barriers and borders and everything else. … I realize having played and knowing the game a little bit was a door opener. … Of course you roll the ball out on the field and kids are going to come. It’s a great way to galvanize efforts and start conversations and help (improve communities).

How much pride do you take in the coaching achievements of Ruth and Tom? Yeah, St. Charles can’t get rid of us, I guess. You have three Poulins coaching in the area.

My dad’s in the equestrian field but he’s a clinician and a judge and teacher in his own right. …

My mom is a teacher. … We all help kids or sort of do something along those lines as far as teaching or leading or helping youths in some aspects, whether in a classroom or through sports or whatever it may be. It’s a cool little tradition to have all of us involved with youths and trying to affect them positively.

Do you still feel a strong bond Incredibly prepared. We with the Saints with all family ties played at a pretty high level in terms of high school soccer, so it you have going at North these was an easier transition I think days? than most are able to have going to college.

What did you take away from the concussion issues that became a problem for you in college? Did you learn something from that?

No, I think maybe more looking back, as far as my experience. It was a different time, so many years ago, but now as a coach, maybe it’s made a difference as far as how to prepare those kids and how to teach them to [protect themselves] and all that good stuff.

What motivated you to become so involved on the charitable front?

I took a trip through a separate organization that was involved in Malawi in south Africa right around the CONCACAF tournament when they were hosting it in South Africa.

I laugh because everyone asks which school did you go to; I still say ‘St. Charles’ because it was only one. It’s funny to hear people talk about the rivalry and this and that but it’s still great to go to the stadium and see [trophies and memorabilia] or All-American stuff, and being part of that and leaving our little mark when the school split. We got out of there just in time.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE BURLINGTON – Holding only a slim lead against Rockford Christian in Friday’s fourth quarter, the Burlington Central girls basketball team turned to an old standby to earn a familiar result in Big Northern Conference East play.

BC turned up its defensive intensity in a 50-41 victory, then kept it up down the stretch.

“We had them turn the ball over quite a bit in the second quarter,” Rockets coach Mark Smith said. “We got some turnovers in the press … and then it became pretty comfortable the rest of the way like that.”

Central (16-3, 7-0 BNC East) relied on a balanced offensive attack led by Sam Pryor (14 points) and Kayla Ross (10).

Already touting depth as one of its many strengths, BC

recently has welcomed more, as Sam Cruz (hand), a key member of last season’s Class 3A state tournament team, returned to the rotation earlier this month.

The Royal Lions outscored the Rockets in the fourth quarter, but BC’s 18-5 run in the second quarter ultimately turned the tide.

“They scored a few buckets at the end,” Smith said. “It was a 15-point game most of the game, and then we had to maintain that lead throughout the game.”

WEEKEND LIFE Change: Something to rely on Tuesday night, Holly and I got online to register her for high school.

Piece of cake, I figured. I got through the process with Noah, three years ago, so how hard could it be?

We completed the demographic and contact information, and answered the permissions questions, most of which related to technology issues. And then we reached the “Alcohol Based Hand Sanitizer” permission.

I checked “no.”

My girl shrieked and dove for the keyboard. That’s when the wrestling started.

“The use of the Hand Sanitizer is to promote good hand hygiene practices prior to your student’s lunch,” the online form stated. “This is an initiative to help stop the spread of germs that can make your student and others sick. According to the Centers for Disease Control, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are a safe, effective and accepted component of any hand hygiene program to reduce the spread of infection. I hereby give permission for my student to use Alcohol Based Hand Sanitizer.”

“No,” I decided, Tuesday night, because I had it in my mind that this sanitizer also contains triclosan, an

But, from what I’ve found, there isn’t any triclosan in alcohol-based hand sanitizers. I thought there was, though, Tuesday night, and probably would still, had I not fact-checked that point for this column.

My poor kid! I’ve been discouraging her from using alcohol-based hand sanitizer for over a year, a bone of contention that has become a source of some silliness between us.

(Hand-washing still gets my vote, but, sadly, it’s all hurry, hurry, in school, these days.)

Wait ’til she gets home and hears what I learned while she was at school. Oh boy.

Tuesday night, though, we laughed

uproariously as we wrestled to uncheck my “no” and wondered if Batavia High School has hand-sanitizer police roaming the halls. You know, to make sure that kids whose parents don’t approve don’t sneak a squirt.

I was laughing so hard my eyes watered, but, really, maybe it’s because this kid is stronger than she looks?

No kidding, I had to pull the “mom card” to get her off me.

What’s that thing wrestlers say when they have to throw in the towel?

Yeah, I had to “tap out” (aging back and all …). We made such a ruckus I’m surprised the neighbors didn’t call the police.

“I wonder what Noah’s friends think?” Holly asked, as she ventured into the next room to find out who her brother was playing with on his gaming system via an Internet connection headset and microphone that allows his buddies and him to share strategy with each other – and, as it happens, to hear what’s up in each other’s houses. It’s a beautiful thing.

This time, it was just Christopher.

You know, the neighbor kid. Already knows we’re nuts, so nothing new lost there. He came in handy a moment later, though, when Holly and I moved on to the course selection

page and I became confused about the science options. She’s already slotted to take a biology class, but I wondered what happened to the environmental science class Noah took as a freshman with Mr. Renz, which he loved.

“They changed it,” Christopher (a current BHS freshman) said, through Noah’s headphones. Ah, and here I thought I was just getting the hang of high school.

By the time we got to the electives page, Holly and I were beyond help – but we had to pull it together and even choose alternatives to those electives, should her first choices be filled. Tough call.

“Phone a friend,” I finally suggested. I was giddy. My baby’s getting ready for high school and I’ve resorted to quoting gameshows.

Parenting isn’t for sissies, people.

So many other exciting possibilities await her, too. She’s got her eye on becoming a member of the Bulldogs girls soccer team, in fact, but you never know, she has become an expert wrestler. I do what I can.

Paramount Theatre turns in stellar version of ‘The Who’s Tommy’

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com AURORA – As an longtime fan of the band The Who, I had misgivings when it was first announced that the band’s iconic album – “Tommy” – was being made into a Broadway play.

I was concerned that the album’s story would get watered down on stage and that the album’s message would be too complicated for theater.

Perhaps those worries were shortsighted. “The Who’s Tommy” debuted on Broadway in 1993 to rave reviews. The production was nominated for 10 Tony awards and won five, including awards for best choreography and original score.

For the uninitiated, “Tommy” tells the story of a boy who witnesses his father murder his mother’s lover upon his surprise return home after being released from a World War II prisoner of war camp. He becomes deaf, dumb and blind, turning to pinball as a form of communication.

The character of Tommy is played by three people: Peyton Owen plays 4-yearold Tommy; Ricky Falbo plays 10-year-old Tommy; and Devin DeSantis plays an adult version of Tommy.

Owen and Falbo turn in such credible performances that it is easy to have sympathy for Tommy’s circumstances and the teasing that he endures. And DeSantis has

the charisma and vocal chops to play the adult version of “Tommy.”

DeSantis meets the challenge of stepping into a role created for Who lead singer Roger Daltrey. While DeSantis doesn’t erase the memory of Daltrey in the role, he does make it his own.

Meghan Murphy also brings plenty of manic energy to the role of the Acid Queen, and the stunning sets take a starring role in the production.

“The Who’s Tommy” will run through Sunday, Feb. 15.

Surgery can both cause and treat abdominal adhesions Dear Doctor K: I had abdominal surgery last year. Soon after, I started experiencing severe pain and swelling in my abdomen. It turns out I have abdominal adhesions. I’d never heard of them.

What are they, and how are they treated?

Dear Reader: Abdominal adhesions are bands of fibrous scar tissue. They can cause organs that are normally not connected to stick to one another or to the wall of the abdomen.

Abdominal adhesions most commonly develop after abdominal surgery. Less often, adhesions form in people who develop an infection or other type of inflammation in the abdomen.

In most patients, adhesions do not cause any symptoms. In a small number of people, however, they do. Some people appear to inherit genes that make them more likely to form adhesions.

Some are just unlucky: Adhesions form in a location that makes them more likely to pinch and block the intestines.

In any event, the fibrous bands of scar tissue can block the intestines either completely or partially. This blockage is called a bowel obstruction. It can cause cramping abdominal pain.

More significant intestinal obstruction can cause: • Severe, cramping abdominal pain; • Nausea and vomiting; • Swelling of the abdomen; • Inability to pass gas and absent or infrequent bowel movements; • Signs of dehydration. These include dry skin, dry mouth and tongue, severe thirst, infrequent urination, fast heart rate and low blood pressure.

Rarely, a portion of the bowel twists tightly around a band of adhesions. This cuts off the normal blood supply to the twisted bowel, causing “strangulation.”

That section of bowel begins to die. When this emergency happens, immediate abdominal surgery is required to remove the adhesions and restore blood flow to the bowel.

During surgery, a surgeon removes as much as possible of the scar tissue causing the

blockage. In performing the surgery, the surgeon often spots other adhesions besides the ones causing the blockage. The patient is already under anesthesia and the abdomen has been opened.

Therefore, other adhesions also are removed to prevent them from causing trouble in the future. (I’ve put an illustration of surgery to remove adhesions on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

So, surgery is both a cause of, and a treatment for, abdominal adhesions. When surgery is done to remove an intestinal obstruction caused by adhesions, the surgery can cause adhesions to form again and create a new obstruction. Laparoscopic surgery, in which several small incisions are made instead of one large incision, can reduce the risk of abdominal adhesions.

So, the surgeon’s decision on whether to perform surgery can be a complicated one. When adhesions are causing strangulation, however, it’s not complicated: Surgery is not only necessary, but often lifesaving.

Mom cleans out of boredom Dr. Wallace: Will you please give your opinion on this major disagreement between my mother and me? Every now and again, my mom goes into my room while I’m at school and does a major “cleaning.”

When she does this, she takes down my posters (and sometimes throws them away), reads my personal diary and goes through the contents of my drawers and even the pockets of my coats and jackets. I don’t know what she’s looking for, but she never finds anything, and I don’t think she has the right to go through my things when she is “cleaning” my room.

I’m on the honor roll at school and I’m definitely not into drugs or alcohol, so she has no reason to snoop. Plus, I don’t think she needs to do any additional cleaning because I keep my room very tidy and do not need her to clean.

When I talk to her about this she always says that she just gets bored sometimes and therefore “cleans” to keep busy. I have asked her not to do this, but she just doesn’t listen.

She not only snoops through your personal belongings, but she takes your posters down and even destroys some of them. This is completely unacceptable.

All teens deserve privacy and trust until that trust is broken. Only in the case of a teen’s irresponsible behavior is extra monitoring (or “snooping”) warranted.

It left several years ago, but now you have “teen fat,” and the time has come to change your eating habits and lose at least 20 pounds. If you keep eating the way you are now, you will wind up exactly like your mother and father – grossly overweight. And it will also affect your health.

It’s imperative that you have an appointment with your family doctor for a complete physical exam. Then your doctor will recommend a nutritionist who will offer a healthy and delicious eating plan and suggest some exercises for you. And it would be wise for mom and dad to do the same.

Now for the answers to the bidding and opening-lead questions in my Christmas Competition.

3. Look at only the South hand.

After opening one spade, what would you rebid after partner responds (a) one no-trump? Three spades, game-invitational (but there is a case for four spades, hoping to buy a good dummy). (b) two clubs? Three hearts splinter bid, or, if you do not use that gadget, four clubs, which is forcing. You hope partner can control-bid (cue-bid) four diamonds. (c) two diamonds? Three spades (or three clubs). (d) three spades (game-invitational limit raise)? Four clubs, control-bid. (e) four clubs, a splinter bid showing at least four-card spade support and game-going values with a singleton or void in clubs?

Four hearts, control-bid. (f) four spades? Pass (a tad cautious) or five clubs (control-bid) or six spades (throwing caution to the wind).

4. Look at only the West hand.

What would you respond after partner opens (a) one diamond?

One heart (but there is a case for raising diamonds to try to make it harder for the opponents to bid spades). (b) one heart? Four hearts (a weak freak) – sock it to ’em. (c) three hearts? Anything but pass! I like four no-trump, Blackwood. I guess my second choice would be six hearts.

5. Look at only the East hand.

North opens one no-trump, and South raises to three no-trump.

What would you lead? Heart six, second-highest from a weak suit when the top two cards are not touching.
