People, pets and a pitch to readers EDITOR’S NOTEBOOK Kathy Balcazar Pets kept popping up in the newsroom Wednesday.

Not literally (although that would have been super fun). Rather, it was the topic of pets.

First, I received a call from a freelancer who made mention that she used to write a pet column. She asked whether the Kane County Chronicle would be interested in publishing such pieces in the future.

I told her to send me some clips and that we’d consider the idea.

Second, I received a lighthearted email from Gil Rangel of St. Charles, who – with a mission of spreading some joy – wanted to share a zany photo of his puppy, Bella.

“This is our pup, Bella, who encountered some winter static electricity,” Gil wrote. “What reader is not going to look at this picture and laugh!”

Gil noted that Bella also belongs to Laura and Gabrielle Rangel.

St. Charles re-establishes its North Star with strategic plan

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – About 14 months ago, City Administrator Mark Koenen said, St. Charles was in a position of needing to “re-establish what our North Star is.”

To do that, the city embarked on a process to update its strategic plan, which identifies goals, priorities and an action plan for the future of St. Charles.

The city gathered input through interviews, focus groups, community workshops and the 2013 resident priority

survey.

A representative from Sikich, which helped the city with the initiative, shared highlights with aldermen Tuesday. The updates included a new mission statement, a set of guiding principles and shortterm and long-term goals.

“This is a big night,” Koenen said.

Greg Kuhn of Sikich said the mission statement was updated to Heritage-Community-Service-Opportunity.

“Four words, but I think four very meaningful and powerful words when you put them together,” he said.

Respect, engagement, sense of community and accountability were chosen as the city’s guiding principles.

“These are very meaningful phrases, and they should guide your work going forward,” Kuhn said.

Short-term goals included promoting and facilitating the development of such commercial assets as Pheasant Run and the former St. Charles Mall site; finalizing the police facility study; and encouraging creativity, innovation and sound policy decision-making.

Long-term goals included developing three new revenue

sources in five years; developing a rental and business licensing program; and filling vacant parcels on Main Street.

Kuhn acknowledged that time, resources and opportunities prevent the city from accomplishing every goal immediately.

“You can’t tackle them all at once,” he said.

Once the strategic plan is approved by the St. Charles City Council – that is set for Feb. 1 – the next step will be developing an action plan, which addresses timetables and who will be responsible for what, among other issues.

On Thursday night, I heard something I haven’t heard in several weeks: The whohuh-who-whoo-whoo of our nocturnal neighbor, the great horned owl.

Although they hooted and hollered their way through most of the late fall, their courtship period, lately I hadn’t heard much from the Bubos – my nickname for the great horned pair that dominates the avian territory around Davis School in St. Charles.

Bubo virginianus, you might recall, is the scientific name for great horned owls, or GHOs, a species that is common throughout our area.

Pairs mate for life and, even though bonded, still will go “courting” as they prepare for breeding. They select a nest that already is made – a redtailed hawk nest, squirrel nest, or even a large tree cavity – and get down to the business of raising a family just as winter hits its peak. While you’re warm and snug, while outside temperatures are 0 or below, Mom GHO is incubating eggs.

When you’re dry and safe in the midst of a blizzard, Dad GHO is bringing food to his growing family.

Then in spring, when you venture outside on those first warm days, the baby Bubos are fledging and preparing for life on their own. Timing, as they say, is everything, and in this case it couldn’t be more perfect – for the owls. Springtime is when most other birds and mammals are just starting to rear young, so prey, in the form of immature animals, typically is abundant; and their inexperience is a boon for young owls, whose hunting skills often need lots of honing.

County – but for the species as a whole. Its range stretches from northern Canada throughout the United States and into Central and South America.

Back to the Davis School owls. … Their courtship over, the pair had largely been silent these past few weeks. Thursday night however, something was up. I’m wondering if an owl with a neighboring territory encroached too far into the Bubos’ home range. Whatever the reason, the hooting was considerable.

Clearly, the big birds were worked up about something, and I was glad that “something” wasn’t me. GHOs have long, sharp talons that make quick work of prey; powerful feet – purported to have a grasp stronger than that of a bald eagle; and a bill designed for ripping and shredding.

This legendary strength has enabled the GHO to extend its menu of possible prey to more than 500 species, including such diverse animals as rabbits, mice, bats, skunks … and other owls.

Yep, the two other species we’ve profiled in the past couple of weeks, the barred owl and the screech owl, both are preyed upon by GHOs. In case of barred owls, the GHO is more likely to take eggs or nestlings; however, even adult screech owls – which top out around 10 inches in height and 6 to 8 ounces in weight – are easy prey for the 2-foot tall, 3-pound GHOs. Which brings us to the results of our informal survey of barred and screech owl sightings within the Chronicle’s distribution area. As of Thursday, we are at 12 people

who have either seen or heard barred owls recently. The number of people seeing or hearing screech owls is at three, although I heard from another four people who, like myself, “used to” hear screech owls but have not for several years.

As we’ve said many times before in this space, populations of all species rise and fall as conditions change. Right now, things seem to be favoring great horned owls and barred owls, while screech owl num-

bers seem to have dipped. Time – and any phone calls or emails to report a sighting – will tell how these owls sort things out amongst themselves in our suburban landscape.

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Mark Bernard remembers the first time he became aware of Meagan Seals, known as the “miracle baby.”

Meagan Seals has fought through birth defects that were so severe, her family said doctors prepared them for the worst. Her mother, Luellen Seals, said it was suggested that the pregnancy be terminated. But she said that never was an option. Instead, Meagan Seals was born. In November, she celebrated her sixth birthday.

Bernard, who runs Rustic Road Farm in Elburn, said he saw a previous story about Meagan Seals in the Kane County Chronicle, and it inspired him. He noted the Facebook page called “Meagan Seals Miracle Baby.” He went to a fundraising event and met Luellen Seals. And now, Rustic Road Farm carries Luellen Seals’ tea product – Teatoxergy.

Bernard said he has a brother who, like Meagan Seals, has had to endure many medical issues – “they didn’t give him much of a chance to live,” Bernard said – but is now in his 30s.

“People don’t realize, who don’t have a child or a family member where this happens … really how special that child is,” Bernard said.

Luellen Seals said she always has known that about Meagan, her fourth child.

When the family found out during the pregnancy that Meagan Seals faced brain development issues, Luellen Seals said there was never a thought of stopping the pregnancy. She said her daughter has four different brain conditions.

There have been difficulties, Luellen Seals said. Last year, she said Meagan Seals had a stroke during a surgery, and that has led to some setbacks. For instance, Meagan Seals had been eating some foods on her own, but now is doing most of her eating through a feeding tube.

She said Meagan Seals’ left side had been her stronger side, but now her left side has been weakened. She said her daughter had been waving hello and goodbye, but that doesn’t happen anymore.

Mostly, however, she said she feels grateful. She said she’ll take her daughter with her to many places. Bernard said he enjoys their visits to Rustic Road Farm. Luellen Seals said her other children don’t even treat Meagan as if she has a disability. She said they accept her and play games with her and enjoy time spent with her.

She said she is hoping her tea business will grow and allow her to spend time at home with her daughter. She said she treasures all of the time she has with her.

“I want to be home with her,” Luellen Seals said. “Her life is short, and we know that.”

GENEVA – As the Geneva Chamber of Commerce launches its second annual Geneva Restaurant Week, which runs from Monday to Jan. 31, the choices just keep adding up.

EvenFlow Music and Spirits, at 302 W. State St., is offering a rosemary pork burger for lunch. Nobel House, at 305 W. State St., will have a half slab of smoked ribs and lobster tail for dinner.

Sweet Natalie’s Gluten-Free Bakery, at 228 S. Third St., has coffee and several desserts as the options.

There will be 18 participants. The restaurants will offer lunch, dinner or both for $19 or $39 as price points, chamber spokeswoman Laura Rush said.

“The restaurants can do whatever they want with those price points,” Rush said.

“Some are per person; some are for two. Some are just entrees, and some include drinks.

Some have five levels, and you choose from each level. We’ve got price points across the board, tastes across the board – a really nice variety.”

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – More than 20 years ago, Batavia’s rapid population growth triggered a state statute that increased the size of the City Council to 14 members from 10.

Now, a Batavia alderman is proposing that the city return to a 10-member council and wants voters to decide the issue in a referendum.

Third Ward Alderman Kyle Hohmann said the council is simply too large and that a reduction will improve the quality of discussions and make the body more productive.

“We have heard at times from staff and the citizens of Batavia that they feel the council is too large and feel it should be reduced for a variety of reasons surrounding productivity,” Hohmann said.

At a council meeting earlier this week, Hohmann made a formal request for a referendum question to be drawn up. He was joined by 2nd Ward Alderman Martin Callahan.

Currently, the city is divided into seven wards, each represented by two aldermen.

Hohmann’s plan calls for four wards, each with two aldermen, as well as two council members elected atlarge from anywhere in the city.

Each of the four wards would include a portion of the downtown, in contrast to the existing situation in which most of the central business district is within a single ward.

Fifth Ward Alderman Lucy Thelin Atac said if aldermen are going to contemplate a reduction, they should consider having the entire council elected atlarge.

Hohmann’s 3rd Ward colleague, Alderman Dan Chanzit, said he is opposed to the reduction, believing that the existing system provides better representation.

Mayor Jeff Schielke agreed, adding that the council’s current size helps in doing the city’s work.

“Given the volume of business we are doing here, I think it’s beneficial to have 14 aldermen,” Schielke said.

Schielke cautioned aldermen that they could find themselves running against each other for the reduced number of seats.

Hohmann, noting that aldermanic candidates frequently run unopposed, said the increased competition would be beneficial.

CAMPTON HILLS – After 18 years of worship services, weddings and baptisms, the Rev. John Rodgers will retire from the Congregational United Church of Christ in Campton Hills.

The church, at 40W451 Fox Mill Blvd., will host a celebration of his retirement at 2 p.m. Sunday, and welcome the church’s new senior pastor, the Rev. David Pattee.

This event is free and open to the public, but donations are appreciated.

The Prairie Brass Band will perform, followed by desserts in Rodgers Fellowship Hall.

“It was a marvelous time to be the minister of this congregation,” Rodgers said. “It’s a wonderful congregation ... and we found it enjoyable, as well as meaningful.”

A pastor for 42 years in total, Rodgers said he served at

five congregations previously, including 14 years at St. Matthew United Church of Christ in Wheaton.

While he was the pastor at Congregational United Church of Christ, the church moved in 1998 from its 160-year-old building in St. Charles – where Lazarus House is located – to its current location in the Fox Mill subdivision.

“We helped get it [Lazarus House] started the last year we were there, while we were building a new facility in Campton Hills,” Rodgers said.

“That was the biggest change.

We went from a membership of 300 to a little over 1,000 in those years after moving out.”

Rodgers said he has seen the change in the church, its growth and the expansion of its programs and staff.

“We try to do things in the

community to be more mission focused,” Rodgers said.

One example of that is “’Jesus Has Left The Building,” a program of good works and community outreach, he said.

“We do not go to church [on that Sunday], we go to work – at the forest preserve, at a clinic, the library, the park district. For two hours, 300 people get a lot of work done,” he said.

Rodgers said his hope for the church is that it would maintain its presence, mission and focus.

“Our goal statement is increasing our love for God and neighbor, and part of that is we always emphasize and continue to expand our understanding of, ‘Who is our neighbor?’ “ Rodgers said. “We try to be a voice within the Fox Valley of tolerance, acceptance and understanding and education.”

In retirement, Rodgers said he and his wife, Susan, plan to move to Chicago, live there for a year, and then likely will remain in the Northern Illinois area.

ST. CHARLES – Tickets are available for CASA Kane County’s annual Children’s Champion Celebration set for March 5, according to a news release.

Tickets are $150 and may be purchased by calling the CASA Kane County office at 630-232-4484, the release states.

It indicated that proceeds from the event – the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year – will help support the more than 600 abused and neglected children that CASA Kane County serves as appointed by the courts.

With the theme of venetian masquerade ball, the gala will feature dinner, dancing and an auction at the Q Center at 1405 N. Fifth Ave. in St. Charles, according to the release.

Items up for bid include private, upscale dining experiences; destination vacation packages; Chicago sports tickets; and VIP theater packages, the release states.

According to the release, the winners of the grand raffle don’t need to be present to win, and raffle items may be viewed on the CASA Kane County website, www.casakanecounty.org. Raffle tickets are $20 each or seven for $100 and may be purchased by calling the organization.

Two couples – Ron and Elena Onesti of the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles and Tim and Marcia Kellenberger of Kellenberger Electric – will be recognized at the event as its honorary chairs and the Children’s Champion award recipients, respectively, the release states.

“It was an easy decision when selecting our two honored couples this year for the CASA gala, Executive Director Gloria Bunce stated in the release. “They are people in our community who go above and beyond in support of our most vulnerable youth in our community. Less transparency last thing Illinois needs

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s task force to streamline government and lessen costs came out with its report earlier this month.

The group’s official name is the Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandates Task Force.

Nowhere in that name do we see anything about reducing the people’s right to know what their government is up to.

That would be the end result, however, of one proposal to give local governments the option to post public notices online, rather than in local newspapers.

Public notice advertising protects the public’s right to know what local governments are doing – when they meet, what they spend their money on, when budget hearings are planned, what public works projects they are seeking bids for, when they plan to hold elections and so forth.

Some government officials apparently believe the money they must spend to keep the public informed about their activities through public notice advertising is not worth it.

If their goal is to keep more of the public in the dark, they might be right.

(Public notices are billed at a discounted ad rate, by the way).

Their proposal would replace public notice advertising with postings of information on government-controlled websites, which are viewed by far fewer people than those who read newspapers. The poor, elderly, minorities and the disabled are less likely to have online access, so they could be effectively blocked from that information.

proposal is local governmental websites have shaky compliance records about posting information that, by law, they already are required to post.

The Citizens Advocacy Center studied more than 750 websites of public bodies in Illinois. Only 73 percent complied with posting notices of upcoming meetings; 57 percent complied with posting proposed meeting agendas; and 48 percent complied with posting approved meeting minutes.

Would local governments’ compliance records for posting public notices be any better?

We doubt it.

The public should not be forced to hunt through county, city, school district, park district, township, community college, library district, fire protection district, and other government websites for public notices that might or might not even be there – not when the current system works much better.

Along with finding public notices printed regularly in local newspapers, the public also can find them on a website operated by Illinois newspapers for the past five years – publicnoticeillinois. com.

The one-stop, free-access, searchable website has copies of all public notices printed in Illinois newspapers.

This one-two punch is a powerful, efficient tool for Illinoisans who want to keep an eye on how their hard-earned tax dollars are spent.

After all, corruption and government have too often gone hand in hand in our state – much to the dismay and disgust of the public.

Less transparency about the workings of government is the last thing Illinois needs.

Bulldogs junior scores 19 off bench to boost Batavia

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Colin Cheaney knew from the moment he took his first shot of warmups that he was ready to go.

The minute he came into the game, he wasted no time in checking that theory.

Cheaney drilled his first 3-pointer on his way to a game-high 19 points to boost the Batavia boys basketball team past St. Charles North, 63-49, for an important road

win in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division.

The 6-foot-3 junior made his first three shots off the bench – all from behind the arc – on his way to a career-high in points.

“I was talking to a couple of the guys before the game, and was just like, ‘I’m feeling it tonight,’ ” Cheaney said. “(North) was focusing on Canaan (Coffey) a lot, and that just gave me open shots. I am usually put in the game for offense, and know my role. The

coaches tell me to shoot with confidence when I see a look, and that’s what I did tonight.”

The win keeps the Bulldogs (15-6, 7-0 UEC River) perfect in conference and continues to build momentum for a stretch of difficult road games ahead.

Batavia travels to a challenging road opponent in Quincy (12-4) today.

Cheaney also showed he wasn’t just a threat from the outside.

Vikings stop Sabres, avenge defeat

editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – In the first half of Friday’s game between Streamwood and Geneva, the scoreboard resembled more of a “three-yards-and-a-cloudof-dust” football game than a boys basketball contest.

After scoring only 18 points in the first half, the Vikings’ offense finally cracked the Sabres’ defense for 39 in the second half. Geneva pulled away for a 57-33 win in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play.

“We set the game back about a half century in that first half,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “But defensively, I can’t complain too much.

They made sure that the shots that they took were contested, and we didn’t make too many mistakes.”

Streamwood (4-18, 1-7 UEC River) was content to swing the ball side to side and probe the defense with possessions that lasted more than a min-

ute at times. Geneva (16-5, 4-3) used its size advantage to bother shots on the perimeter and collect rebounds, which limited Streamwood’s second-chance opportunities.

“I don’t care if they want to run five-minute possessions; as long we don’t break down defensively, that doesn’t bother me one bit,” Ralston said.

Bennett Fuzak led Geneva with 11 points, while Matt Johnston and Dominic Navigato added nine each. The Vikings had 11 players score and were 15 of 18 from the free-throw line.

Brendon Marton led the Sabres with 10 points, and Jaleel Jenkins contributed nine points and six rebounds.

Geneva avenged an earlier loss at Streamwood – the Sabres won, 50-47, Dec. 4 – and the difference came as the Vikings didn’t wilt in the face of Streamwood’s full-court pressure, which led to more effectiveness on the offensive end.

“We did not come into their

place thinking it was possible to lose the game,” Ralston said. “They made shots that game, and they didn’t make those same shots today.”

The first quarter was a slog for both teams, as neither offense could gain traction in the halfcourt setting. The Sabres took a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter after Marton, a sophomore, shook his defender with a crossover and nailed a jumper from the free throw line to end the quarter. The game was scoreless for nearly four minutes to open the game until Fuzak converted a layup plus a foul.

Geneva’s bench provided a boost to end the first half, as Johnston and Jordan Vedder nailed a pair of 3-pointers before halftime to give the Vikings an 18-13 advantage at intermission. The pair combined for 11 of the team’s 18 points in the half.

The Vikings’ lead bal looned to double digits in the second half. Fuzak drilled a 3-pointer right after halftime

and shots finally started falling for Geneva once Streamwood went to a zone.

“Breakdowns on defense and nothing falling on offense, that’s not a good combination,” Streamwood coach Paul Kowalyszyn said.

“That’s a good team over there. You can’t do stuff like that against them.”

“We started getting the ball inside. Once we got the ball inside, then our outside shots started falling. A good inside-outside game,” said Fuzak, who added six rebounds. “We found the open man a lot. It was a pretty even scoring night.”

While the Sabres continued to play hard by inducing tie-ups and diving on the floor, their shots weren’t falling enough to keep pace with the Vikings.

“Every little mistake we make, good teams make us pay,” Kowalyszyn said. “I thought the boys played hard.

Batavia coach Jim Nazos has seen the growth in Cheaney from a point in the beginning of the season when not too many people knew he could be such a threat.

“Colin’s kind of got that mentality where he’s fearless in a lot of ways,” Nazos said. “I think the stronger he gets and the more he plays, he’s going to get better and better.”

Cheaney’s first 3 gave the Bulldogs a 13-10 lead, which they took into the second quarter. Batavia never let the North Stars (3-11, 1-6) get back to tie or take a lead. Cheaney was joined in double figures by seniors Kamontez Thomas (13 points) and Coffey (11).

Nazos said despite North’s

early-season struggles, the hosts put forth one of the better efforts his squad has gone up against.

“They are a very good team.

I do really believe that,” Nazos said. “They have these stretches where things get away from them, but I like their guys.

They play hard and can score.

There is no give with them.

I think they are a team that still has a lot of wins ahead of them. I really do.”

The lapses Nazos spoke of have been inescapable for North coach Tom Poulin. After reviewing film of games back to the first of the season, he said there are those stretches that things seem to get away from his group.

That stretch happened in the third quarter when his team was outscored, 14-5. The North Stars trailed by 18 – 4325 – after three quarters.

“We really do have those stretches almost every single game,” Poulin said. “Every game that we’re competitive in, there’s a stretch where

North saw a sign of light at the end of the tunnel as senior guard Mikey Schroeder found his shooting stroke in the fourth quarter. Schroeder has struggled with his shot of late, but finished with 16 of his

team-high 18 points in the final quarter.

Schroeder tried to help North get back in the game late, but never saw his team draw within less than 10 points after a Jarod Karom 3-pointer midway through the fourth.

Not many UEC River coaches expected any team to go unbeaten in the conference this season. But when asked why he thinks the Bulldogs continue to find ways to win, Poulin gave a simple explanation.

“They believe,” he said.

“They have gone through tough times, but they believe in what they do as a system.

They play together very well.

That’s believing in each other. They believe in what they do one possession at a time. It goes a long way, and when you have success that just snowballs.”

Batavia still holds a twogame lead atop the River Division with road games against Geneva (three losses in conference), Larkin (two) and St. Charles East (two) still to play.

You had connections with both of the other inductees, correct?

Yes. When Taylor was a freshman, I also coached her older sister, Caty, who is currently our freshman A girls basketball coach. I coached Taylor all four years and have known her since middle school. She used to come to our summer camps, so I’ve known her for quite some time. I coached Tom’s daughter, Dori, for her junior and senior years on varsity.

Do you keep in contact with Taylor much anymore?

She lives out of state (in South Carolina), is married and has a 1-year-old, so it’s tough. I’ve seen her around a few times when she has been back, but I haven’t spent lengthy amounts of time with her in some time. The last time I saw her was at her sister Caty’s wedding.

For me, that’s what I miss most. That camaraderie with fellow coaches and players. I still keep in touch and have gone to weddings of former players. So the kind of continuation of that connection is really special. The girls felt the same way, too. Sure, we remember the records and accomplishments, but it’s the team dinners, the bonding, the friendships that we’ll remember and cherish most.

Yes, as many as I can, whether they are home or

Yes, absolutely. This past July was five years cancer-free. Obviously, a cancer diagnosis is not a club you want to be a part of, but for me personally, it changed my outlook on life. I appreciated those relationships in the past. But now, those parents and girls I coached that were such a huge part of my support system when I got sick, have continued throughout.

They always ask how I’m doing and just that care and concern. ... It’s inspirational to me.

Did you have a coach that you looked up to during your time coaching or even still to this day?

I read all of the books from (former Tennessee women’s coach) Pat Summitt and (Duke men’s coach Mike Krzyzewski). I loved watching their games to see how they handled certain situations.

Whether it was down two, end of game or whatever, just watching how they would approach game situations. I knew I could learn a lot from how experts do it.

We had some special years.

My second year, we were 26-4 and won a regional at home for the first time at the (Class) AA level. That was a fun ride, making it to the sectional final and seeing all of the school and community support begin to develop. Then obviously, 2009, heading down to state.

We didn’t win a game there, but the experience itself was amazing. That supersectional game, to get to state, having that community support and the feeling of getting something done we had always dreamed about for so long.

For it to actually happen and have fans there was pretty amazing.

What did it mean to you to hear that you’d be inducted into the Geneva Hall of Fame?

Former Geneva girls basketball coach Gina Nolan had to know this day was coming.

At halftime of the Geneva boys game against Batavia on Feb. 5, Nolan will be inducted into the Geneva High School Hall of Fame. Joining Nolan in the Class of 2016 will be her former player and the program’s all-time leading scorer, Taylor Whitley, as well as current principal Tom Rogers. In her seven seasons as head coach, Nolan guided the Vikings a 173-38 record, including a trip to the state tournament in 2009 as part of a 32-2 season. During her time as coach, Nolan also was diagnosed with breast cancer, which eventually forced her retirement from coaching in 2011. Still a teacher at Geneva, Nolan caught up with Kane County Chronicle sports reporter Chris Casey in the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat to talk about receiving the honor and much more.

Cartee, East boys bowlers keep aiming high Senior Cole Cartee rolled a career-best 1,368 series Jan. 16 in an IHSA regional at St. Charles East’s home boys bowling lanes.

No doubt, there’s something about Bowling Green Sports Center in West Chicago, but Cartee and the Saints are equally confident the Brunswick Zone in Roselle can double as a comfort zone during today’s Lake Park Sectional.

“It’s just all the practices,” Cartee said. “We’ve practiced a lot. Spare shooting. Strikes.

Everything. Just knowing that there’s some guy behind you that if you fall down, they’ll be able to pick you up and carry you on.”

Cartee topped West Chicago’s Anthony Hernboth by 34 pins for individual champion honors, continuing a recent hot stretch that included a 1,315 series Jan. 9 at the Lake Zurich Invite.

East, which has not been shy about its lofty state series aspirations throughout the season, won the 13-team regional by 191 pins.

Juniors Dean Mudlong (1,223), Kyle Middendorf (1,180) and Andrew Culbertson (1,162) followed Cartee, the program’s lone senior.

“I’m really proud of my guys up to this point. I know we’re a pretty young team … and to see everyone coming up, stepping up to the plate, I’m really proud of everyone,” Cartee said. “And I’m really proud of all my coaches sticking with us. There have been some rocky times in the past, but I think that we’re going to come out of this pretty high.”

East took third among 12 team’s at last season’s state tournament. A top-six finish today would send the Saints back to state at St. Clair Bowl in downstate O’Fallon, where the two-day event begins Jan. 29.

Warrior laurels: Operation Warrior Wishes, a St. Charlesbased nonprofit organization that helps wounded veterans and their families attend sporting events nationwide, looks to gain a greater share of the spotlight one day before the Super Bowl.

On Feb. 6, the Pro Football Hall of Fame will recognize Warrior Wishes, founded by father and son tandem Craig and Matt Steichen, at the Hall’s annual Merlin Olsen Luncheon. The lunch will be held at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square Hotel.

“We’ve always had a little bit of cooperation with the teams, but now that the Hall of Fame itself reached out to us, maybe that’s the next stepping stone, if you will,” Craig Steichen said. “We’re obviously a small charity and people know where we live, but it’s starting to get a little bit of legs.”

The Hall of Fame assisted Warrior Wishes in providing tickets for a small group of veterans to attend Super Bowl 50. Since the organization’s inception in 2012, Warrior Wishes has helped 1,700 veterans attend more than 400 sporting events. About half have been NFL games, Craig

‘As long as all is well with your soul’

Sometimes it’s not clear, even the day a column is due, what I should write about. Typically a thought’s been brewing and percolating, sometimes for weeks, until the ideas arrange themselves just so, ready to be poured on the page. Other times, I’m feeling impassioned about a crisis, or am pondering one of my kids’ milestones.

Those columns practically write themselves. This week, however, nothing urgent came to the fore, and so I cast about, deliberately seeking something that might be meaningful. To someone.

“What needs to be said, this week?” I asked, of no one in particular. Almost immediately, I recalled a conversation I recently had with another mom.

It really moved me.

We’re chatterboxes, this mom and I. Whenever we get

together, which isn’t often, it seems a kind of relief. Do you know what I mean? We share what we’ve been up to, sure, but we also share how we feel about it. This time we talked about our lives, which are different in so many concrete ways, and about the choices we each have made over the years.

Choices that perhaps might not fit, for the other, or for another mother, but which work – for us and for our children. We know this to be true because we feel the rightness of our choices within our own guts.

Not our mothers’, our spouses’ or our neighbors’ guts, but our own. If you’ve been a parent for any length of time, you know the difference. And you know the value of such choices and the uneasiness you feel when you haven’t quite made peace with them.

You make the choices you can live with (and if you discover you didn’t, then – by golly – girl, change your mind!), and then you rejoice in the gift of this peace. Which reminds me of an apparently innocuous comment made to me by another woman a few years ago, someone I encountered just once, just for a few minutes, as she helped me with an order at a store. I haven’t spotted her since, but her words have stuck with me. Heck, if I knew what I said that prompted her comment I’d tell you, but I’m sure it was

something innocuous. Her words, though, inspired and true, seemed sent from another place directly to me.

“As long as all is well with your soul,” she said. I know divine intervention when I see it, and will never forget it.

Whatever your choices – whether it’s breast vs. bottle, to work or to not work (outside your home), to keep a home worthy of Better Homes and Gardens or to pursue other, more interesting (to you) pursuits (in my case, just like that hilarious meme floating around online, of that harried housewife who’s unable to keep up with the chaos, my housekeeping style is best describe as “there appears to have been a struggle”), or even something more significant, your choices are yours – and your children’s – to live with.

No one else’s.

As for the other mom and me, we marveled at the notion that our choices could be so different, and yet be so “right.”

Both ways of being, of mothering, are true and viable. To someone who doesn’t take the time to dig past the surface of our stories, this might not seem the case, but that’s OK. We know our stories. We get it.

All is well with our souls.

As for why this message needed paying forward this week, who am I to question it?

There are so many mysteries in this fantastic universe. If it was meant for you, I hope it helps.

In a heavy, medium pot, melt the butter over medium heat, and when it bubbles and froths, add the sliced onions.

Cook the onions for 30 to 40 minutes, stirring regularly, until they have colored a bit, but most important, until they smell truly delicious. Add the celery and cook for 5 more minutes. Then bundle up the thyme, parsley and bay leaf in some kitchen twine and toss that in, too. Add the chicken stock, increase the heat to bring to a boil, and turn the heat down to simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in the cream.

What do doctors learn from pulmonary function testing? As in your case, they can learn whether you have signs of asthma. They also can determine if you have chronic obstructive pulmonary (or lung) disease, known as COPD or COLD. This condition is seen most often in longterm smokers. They also can measure the severity of a group of diseases that make the lung stiff, known collectively as chronic restrictive lung disease.

You should hear back about the test results within a week. If your doctor finds that you do have asthma, he or she may ask you to do your own simple pulmonary function testing at home.

To do this, you use a peak flow meter. This is a small tube that you hold in your hand. You blow into it as hard as you can. With this home test, as with the spirometry test, it is really important that you try as hard as you can. Otherwise, it may indicate a problem that leads your doctor to prescribe treatment you don’t need.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, any change in skin color that occurs after being in the sun, whether a burn or merely a tan, indicates the sun’s ultraviolet rays have damaged the skin.

There is no such thing as a healthy tan.

Although some salons claim tanning beds are safer than the sun because they emit minimal UVB rays (the type of ray believed to cause skin cancer), they still can cause serious skin damage, according to the CDC. Tanning beds emit mostly rays often referred to as the “wrinkle rays,” which have recently been shown to also play a role in skin cancer.

This year more than a million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed and the most serious form of this disease, malignant melanoma, will claim 9,200 lives. Sun damage during childhood and the teen years can increase one’s chances of developing malignant melanoma later on.

When measuring the value of television viewing, it’s not only the time spent before the TV screen but also the quality of the programs you view. Milton Chen at the Center for Lifelong Learning feels that teens who watch moderate amounts of television – especially educational programs – can still be excellent students. But those who watch an excessive amount of television are unable to spend adequate time on their schoolwork and thus become underachievers.

Moderate TV viewers – those who view between one and two hours a day – have enough time for other productive activities.

While television viewing can have a negative influence on students, educational programs can reinforce positive values and impart knowledge on innumerable subjects.

Watching television isn’t a problem in and of itself, but becoming addicted to it is.

Dear Dr. K: My doctor ordered breathing tests to see if I have asthma.

He didn’t tell me what it’s like to go through this. Can you explain?

Dear Reader: The tests your doctor almost surely is referring to are pulmonary function tests. The tests are painless. You breathe in and out through a tube that is connected to various machines.

One of the tests, called spirometry, measures how forcefully you can inhale and exhale while taking as large a breath as possible. Give this test your best effort. If you don’t, the test result can make it look like you have a problem. And then the doctor may order treatment you don’t need. So try hard.

A separate test will measure how much air your lungs can hold. It also measures how much air is left in your lungs when you breathe out as much as you can. This may be done in one of two ways. One way is to have you inhale a small amount of a specific gas (such as helium).

Another way to measure your lung volume is for you to sit inside an airtight cubicle.

You breathe in and out through a pipe in the wall. Your breathing will cause the air pressure inside the box to change.

This pressure change is measured and used to calculate the amount of air you are breathing.

Your doctor also will want to measure how efficiently your lungs deliver oxygen and other gases to your bloodstream. To measure this, you breathe in a small quantity of carbon monoxide (too little to do any harm). The amount of carbon dioxide you
