meet between St. Charles East and St. Charles North, I took advantage of the 500yard freestyle event and saw the swimmers’ teammates with their counters at the end

of the lanes.

I liked the way that some of the team members in charge of counting the laps were standing, then kneeling. And the lines of the lanes added

to that sort of geometric look, which I was immediately drawn to.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ cast member Dovolani coming to Batavia

So, it’s going to be a lot of fun.

Schelkopf: Do you feed off the energy of the audience?

Dovolani: Oh, big time. We want the audience to participate.

We want them to be a big part of it. We want the audience to get up and dance on their feet. We get them dancing, and we get them talking to us.

We want them to perform as much as we do.

Schelkopf: Of course, you’ve been with “Dancing with the Stars” since the second season, and you won the Mirror Ball trophy in 2012 after 14 seasons. What was your

reaction to winning?

Dovolani: If I say it was like a dream come true, it would be an understatement. But it was quite amazing because that season was the all-star season.

So for Melissa Rycroft and I to even make it through to the final was amazing, let alone winning it.

What felt good is that all the dancers felt like they won with me. It was an incredible and amazing ride.

Schelkopf: Why did you think you won that season?

Dovolani: I think it was the hard work. We never looked back. Every week, we danced as if it was our last week.

You couldn’t hold anything back. You had to go out

there and just put it all out there. There was never really a moment where you could say, “I’m going to save it for the next week.”

Because if you did that, there would be no next week.

Schelkopf: Have you had a favorite dancing partner on the show?

Dovolani: Well, I could easily say Melissa was my favorite because I won with her. But I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful people, like Leah Remini, who is one of the funniest women I’ve ever met.

All of my dance partners I have had fun with. Even in the most difficult situations, I found something that inspired me or I knew that I

was inspiring somebody at home to get up and go and try and dance.

Schelkopf: Of course, you are returning in March for the next season of “Dancing with the Stars.”

There was talk you would be a judge, but you’ve decided to return as a dancer. Why do you want to dance again?

Dovolani: I’m 41 years old, and I still love what I do. I love to dance.

Once you cross over to the judge’s side, say goodbye to your dancing. And I’m not ready to say goodbye to my dancing yet.

My kids are at the age where they can still enjoy their dad performing and doing things. I’d rather do my talking with my body then criticizing my friends.

I think there will come a time where I will want to be a judge, but it’s not now.

And when I do become a judge, I know that I can bring positive criticism to the table, and encouraging type of criticism.

I know how much work goes into putting yourself out there and all the insecurities that you have to overcome.

Schelkopf: For people thinking of taking up dancing, what words of wisdom do you have?

Dovolani: Don’t wait. Get out there and do it.

Your life will change tremendously. Dancing opens up these doors that no other sport does. It gives you passion, it gives you joy.

It gives you everything that you could ever want, and it keeps you active. It is the best form of exercise.

You don’t even realize you are exercising.

BATAVIA – Professional ballroom dancer Tony Dovolani is a familiar face to fans of the TV show “Dancing with the Stars.”

Tonight, Dovolani and fellow “Dancing with the Stars” cast member Anna Trebunskaya will take the stage at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, 1201 Main St., Batavia, as part of “Ballroom with a Twist.” The show starts at 8 p.m., and tickets are available at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre’s website.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to Dovolani about the upcoming show.

Eric Schelkopf: You’ve been doing these shows all across the country. What do you like about the experience and what should people who come out to the show at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre expect?

Tony Dovolani: I love that we get to connect with the audiences all over the country, because a lot of times you are in front of cameras, and you don’t know who is watching you and what it means to them, and why they follow you.

So for me, it’s great to be able to go and meet the audience, and really get to talk to them, and have them [give] us questions. And sometimes, we will bring them on stage.

It kind of reminds you of why you do this, you know?

Schelkopf: What should people expect at Friday’s show?

Dovolani: Well, what they should expect is all three reality shows – “American Idol,” “So You Think You Can Dance” and “Dancing with the Stars” – all of us in collaboration together really bringing it to the stage and bringing it in front of them.

You may see it on TV, but it’s nothing compared to seeing it live. Live is just a little different feeling. You get the emotion and the power of the song, the power of the dance.

And it’s just a lot of fun.

THE MISSION: GRADUATION College programs aim to help students make it through

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com Getting high school graduates to go to college isn’t much of a problem here.

Within 16 months of receiving their diploma, 80 to 88 percent of the Class of 2012 from the Batavia, Geneva, Kaneland and St. Charles school districts had enrolled in a two- or four-year college, compared to 73 percent of graduates statewide, according to the Illinois Report Card.

But whether those students have or will become college graduates is harder to predict.

The National Center for Education Statistics reports 59 percent of first-time, fulltime students who began seeking a bachelor’s degree at a four-year institution in fall 2006 obtained the degree at that school within six years.

The graduation rate is even lower at two-year public colleges. The Chronicle of Higher Education reports that in 2010 the rate was 19.4 percent in Illinois, just below the nationwide average of 20.4 percent.

HURDLING OBSTACLES As much as faculty want students to succeed, Roeger recognizes that students at

ECC may face challenges while working toward a degree.

Many students juggle classes with work, she said, and some might feel pressure to take another job or more hours to contribute to their family’s income.

College can be particularly daunting for first-generation students, who might not understand the time commitment to school, what to expect from professors and what classes they’ll need, Roeger said.

And students not yet ready for college-level classes have even more standing between them and graduation, she said.

“The greater and steeper your climb, the more unlikely you are to complete a college degree,” Roeger said.

Just as Waubonsee has taken steps to help more students reach commencement, so too has ECC. Roeger said the list includes the Summer Bridge

program for students who jut missed placement into college-level coursework; Early Alert, a team effort by faculty, administrators and support staff that aims to boost student retention and graduation rates; and College 101, which is required for all first-time, full-time college freshmen.

Offered since 2006, Roeger said the one-credit course teaches students strategies and behaviors that contribute to success in college.

Students not only learn about the services and support programs the college offers, she said, but they also are asked to think about why they’re going to college, what factors could get in their way of completion and how they will address those potential challenges.

Students who complete the course are 50 percent more likely to complete college, she said.

“Our goal is college completion,” Roeger said. “That’s why we’re here.”

Investigators looking into cause behind North Aurora house fire No one injured in fire Wednesday

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – Investigators continue to look into the cause of a fire that damaged a two-story house in North Aurora on Wednesday.

North Aurora firefighters at 5:07 p.m. Wednesday were called to a fire at the house at 3004 Carlisle Lane on the

village’s far west side. No one was injured in the fire, North Aurora Fire Capt. Mike Klemencic said.

“No one was at home at the time,” he said.

A dog and a cat also were not injured, he said. When firefighters arrived, there was smoke and fire coming from a second-floor window of the house, Klemencic said.

The fire was confined to the master bedroom on the second floor, he said. Damage estimates are unknown, he said.

“There was extensive smoke damage to the second floor,” Klemencic said.

The fire was under control within 15 minutes of firefighters arriving on the scene, Klemencic said.

“Our guys got there quickly and kept it from going into the attic,” he said.

GENEVA – Geneva-based Penrose Brewing Co. will release its second set of bottled barrel-aged Wild ales Saturday, but – this time – the brewery is doing things slightly different.

Wild VII and VIII will be released at 11 a.m., similar to the Dec. 20 release of Wild V and VI, but the brewery will have Wild VII and VIII on draft in the taproom, available in 4-ounce pours, so more people will be able to sample the brews, according to the Penrose’s website.

Two arrested in St. Charles armed robbery

Jacob M. Fahey, of the 500 block of South 12th Avenue, and Rayshawn M. Vonperbandt, of the 200 block of North 15th Street, both of St. Charles, each will face charges of armed robbery, a

They were taken into custody Wednesday, more than two weeks after the Jan. 4 armed robbery at the Tobacco and Gift Store, 1556 E. Main

St., according to police.

Police reported the men approached a locked display case and attempted to force it open, after which they displayed weapons and demanded the keys and cellphone from the victim as he tried to call 911.

The men then removed items from the display case and left on foot, according to police.

Vonperbandt was arrested without incident during a traffic stop in the 200 block

of North Fifth Avenue in St. Charles for an unrelated traffic offense, according to police.

Fahey was taken into custody outside his residence. He reportedly fought with detectives and subsequently was charged with felony aggravated battery to a police officer and misdemeanor resisting/ obstructing a police officer.

Further information on the investigation was not immediately available Thursday afternoon from St. Charles

police.

Bond for Fahey was set at $130,000 with 10 percent to apply, and bond for Vonperbandt was set at $100,000 with 10 percent to apply, according to police.

Fahey and Vonperbandt remained in the Kane County Jail as of Thursday afternoon, according to online records.

A preliminary hearing for Vonperbandt is scheduled for Feb. 5, and Fahey’s preliminary hearing is Feb. 6, according to court records.

Winter Wonders event for all ages at Corron Farm

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com CAMPTON HILLS – Historic Corron Farm is hosting a Winter Wonders event 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the farm, 7N761 Corron Road, Campton Hills.

The entry fee is a donation of $5 an individual or $25 a family and includes a snowshoeing lesson every hour

by LL Bean, wagon rides, bean-boot toss and a snowball-throwing contest. Participants may make s’mores at two fire pits, and there will be a nature craft to make a simple bird feeder.

There will be opportunities to learn to shell corn and feed the farm’s goats.

Food and beverages will be available to buy from Cindy’s Creative Cuisine.

The event includes an appearance and nature story reading by the Snow Queen and her Snowman from “Frozen,” said Jayne Holley, cochair of the Community Relations Committee for Campton Hills.

The village, Campton Township and Campton Township Parks and Open Space are partnering with the Corron Farm Preservation Society for the Winter Wonders event, Holley said.

“Our thought was to provide a winter event to get people out of their houses and be able to enjoy things outside,” Holley said. “We just got a whole slate of fun activities and a lot of educational activities. It’s just a very cool place.”

All the activities are outside, but the farm will provide a warming area, and the caterer will provide hot sandwiches, beverages, coffee and doughnuts and baked goods for sale, she said.

The event also is serving as a fundraiser to replace the barn’s roof, which was built in 1835, she said. All proceeds will go toward that effort.

“We are really wanting to help Corron Farm with that roof,” Holley said.

Tom Corron, who is chairman of the Corron Farm Preservation Society, said the

roof replacement and repairs could cost more than $100,000.

So far the society has raised about $35,000, and members are hoping for additional funds from grants, he said.

“Because of the holes in the roof, water got in and damaged some support beams, causing the sides to bow out a little,” Corron said.

The barn is 100 feet long, and during the farm’s working days, 50 dairy cows were in it at a time, Corron said.

Another aspect of the day’s events will be sharing the history of what farmers did in winter to care for their livestock and crops.

Even if the snow melts, the event will go on as planned, Holley said.

“When you live in Illinois, you do not know from winter to winter what you are going to have,” Holley said. “My neighbor built a snowman with holes where the buttons would be. We bought 25 fake snowballs for throwing at the snowman in case there’s no snow.”

for Aurora Election Commission

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Although it would be up to voters to decide to disband the Aurora Election Commission, Kane County officials are ready to address the issue.

“I’d like to see a transparent conversation about the elections in Aurora,” County Board member Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, said at the Public Service Committee meeting Thursday.

The Aurora Election Commission is responsible for election operations within the Aurora city limits in Kane, Kendall and Will counties.

It became a topic of conversation Thursday when 16th Circuit Court Chief Judge Judith Brawka, who appoints the commissioners to three-year

Suzanne Fahnestock Kane County supervisor of elections terms, explained a proposed memorandum of understanding between the county, the election commission and Aurora.

The document, which defines certain administrative and financial procedures, is the culmination of 18 months of work between three entities forced to work together, Brawka said. This is the first written agreement between the parties.

She said the document states that Kane County will provide its payments to the commission on June 15.

Suzanne Fahnestock, Kane County supervisor of elections, said the county contributes about $400,000 to the Aurora Election Commission. The city of Aurora’s share is at least that much but more, Brawka said.

Committee members recommended approval of the memo and said this would be a good time to address the future of the Aurora Election Commission. Several members questioned the necessity of having such an entity.

Because the commission was created by a referendum, a referendum would be needed to end it, Fahnestock said.

“It’s not as simple as it may sound,” she said.

The committee, which discussed the formation of a subcommittee to address the issue, agreed to place the topic on next month’s agenda.

Onesti: Arcada Theatre Aldermen approve agreement had ‘banner’ year in 2014 BATAVIA

for crosswalk improvements

The city’s engineering department has received a Safe Routes to School federal grant for crosswalk improvements at Hart Road, Raddant Road and Larkspur Lane/Wagner Road. The improvements also will include flashing beacons at the locations.

The $14,794 federal grant will pay for the entire project, Batavia civil engineer Andrea Podraza has said. Aldermen at Tuesday’s Batavia City Council meeting approved an agreement for the project.

In addition, Batavia plans

to apply for a $40,000 Kane County Community Development Block Grant to pay for a missing sidewalk along East Wilson Street.

“This is an essential link between the downtown and the regional trail along Kirk Road, along the Batavia Apartments,” Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening wrote in a memo to aldermen. “The new Speedway gas station to be constructed on the east side of Kirk Road will also benefit as they are going to construct a pedestrian crossing at Kirk Road per county requirements.”

The sidewalk project would cost $55,000, including $5,000 of in-kind, in-house engineering services, Buening said.

Onesti doubled that initial goal by hosting 100 shows at the theater, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles, last year.

“We had a banner year in 2014,” Onesti said on Tuesday during a presentation to the St. Charles City Council.

Onesti is president and founder of Onesti Entertainment Corp., which took over management of the Arcada Theatre in 2005.

This year – the 10-year anniversary of Onesti Entertainment Corp. – is shaping up to be a successful one.

By mid-January 2014, there were 24 shows booked.

As of Tuesday, Onesti said there were 67 shows

“Thanks for being an asset to St. Charles.”

Ray Rogina St. Charles mayor on Arcada Theatre’s successful 2014 booked at the theater for the year.

“We’ve proved a lot of people wrong, and we are excited for the future,” Onesti said.

After showing a roughly 5-minute video featuring footage from various 2014 performances, Onesti said what he was most proud of was the variety of shows.

The 2014 schedule included such acts as Kevin Costner, Engelbert Humperdink and Queensryche.

Even Ditka thinks football is too dangerous

By KAVITHA DAVIDSON Bloomberg News Legendary Bears coach Mike Ditka seems to have softened.

Or at least he has seemingly changed his stance on the lawsuit some of his former players brought against the National Football League alleging the indiscriminate dispensing of narcotic painkillers. It marks a significant shift in attitude for one of the league’s staunchest, oldschool voices and, if nothing else, should cause some fans to rethink their own views on player safety.

To recap: Last May, three members of the ’85 Bears Super Bowl championship team led a group of retired players in suing the NFL for the prac-

tice of team doctors prescribing excessive drugs to mask the pain from injuries. The suit claims the doctors were often less than forthcoming about the severity of the injuries while regularly ignoring manufacturer’s dosage recommendations. According to the players, they were not told of the debilitating side effects from such medications, and have suffered long-term disability and addiction.

At the time, Ditka responded by touting the same lines of personal responsibility and “that’s just football” that you’d expect from an NFL lifer. “The game of football has been too good to me,” he wrote in the Chicago SunTimes. “The meds thing ... I don’t know. If you don’t want to take them, don’t take them.

I don’t think anybody ever forces anyone to do anything.”

This line of thinking is common among the old guard of players, coaches and fans who believe the dangers of football have always been obvious and that any legal action against the NFL amounts to a post-retirement money grab.

But it ignores the numerous complaints that the league actively hid the consequences of head injuries and excessive medication. It also minimizes the implicit pressure to play through the pain regardless of health considerations.

Ditka at least acknowledges that while football may have been “too good” to him, it wasn’t for countless others.

On Tuesday night’s episode of HBO’s “Real Sports,” host

Bryant Gumbel discussed the lawsuit with members of the ’85 Bears, who describe an alarming rate of painkiller use and the debilitating damage they’ve suffered later in life. “I was eating 100 Percs a month just to function,” quarterback Jim McMahon said.

He added that he also suffered from suicidal thoughts, recalling teammate David Duerson, who shot himself in 2011 and requested his brain be studied for evidence of football-related trauma.

Ditka, too, tells Gumbel of the toll the game has taken on some of his former players, including former defensive tackle William “The Refrigerator” Perry – “a very fragile individual now,” in Ditka’s words. He acknowledges that painkillers were “plentiful,”

but still questions who deserves the blame – the coach, the team, the league or the sport? But at the very least, Ditka is laying off his previous stance of blaming the players, calling for the NFL to do more for them in retirement. (Ditka does his part for ailing retirees as president of the Gridiron Greats foundation.)

Notably, Ditka has joined the growing number of parents who wouldn’t let their children play football.

“That’s sad. I wouldn’t.

And my whole life was football,” he told Gumbel. “I think the risk is worse than the reward.”

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva boys basketball team seemingly snared every rebound Thursday night but still found itself in peril midway through the fourth quarter.

The Vikings, however, kept their composure and out-executed underdog Batavia down the stretch, pulling away at the end for a 57-47, Upstate Eight Conference River win.

It was a drastically different game than Geneva’s early-season, lopsided win in Batavia.

“They made us do some soul-searching in the middle of the game, and that’s a tough place to be,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “But I give our kids a lot of credit. They kind of hung in there when it didn’t look like things were going our way.”

While Batavia’s offense sputtered in the closing minutes, Batavia coach Jim Nazos was more bothered by Geneva’s plus-20 advantage on the glass, 34-14. While the heightrich Vikings (17-2, 6-1 UEC River) routinely excel in the rebounding department, Nazos was looking for a much tighter margin.

“We’re not blaming one person or anything like that,” Nazos said. “Rebounding’s a team effort. If you don’t take care of the glass or even it up … you’re going to force yourselves to be perfect offensively.

You can’t beat great teams like that.”

The Bulldogs (13-10, 3-6 UEC River) took a 45-44 lead with 4:12 to go in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer from junior Canaan Coffey (team-high 17 points).

But Geneva senior Nate Navigato (25 points, nine rebounds) made a pair of free throws with 3:50 to go to put the Vikings on top, and a Mike Landi layup at the 2:22 mark made it 48-45 Vikings, who maintained the lead in the closing minutes.

His steal and transition finish while being chased by Batavia’s Chasen Peez – also drawing a foul – gave the Vikings a 44-42 lead with 4:33 to go in the fourth quarter and energized the home crowd.

“At first I was looking for someone coming down the court, but we were right at midcourt when I tapped it out,” Landi said. “I just tried to fake him, and it fell.”

Landi also put the Vikings on top to close the third quarter, 39-36, on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer. Landi has been hesitant to shoot from the perimeter but with the clock winding down, he had little choice. “[Ralston] just wants us taking high-percentage shots, obviously, and that hasn’t

been a very high percentage shot, lately,” said Landi, who scored 11 points.

Batavia’s had the clear upper hand in the schools’ football rivalry recently, and a strong start earned the Bulldogs a touchdown lead – 17-10 – after the opening quarter.

Batavia made 5 of 7 3-pointers in the opening quarter, two apiece from Coffey and Jacob Roberts.

By halftime, the Vikings edged ahead, 28-27, with a slick spin move for a layup by senior Pace Temple helping Geneva overtake the Bulldogs late in the quarter.

The Bulldogs have made clear strides as the season has unfolded but continue to be irked by their late-game struggles against top competition.

“You think about St. Charles North, you think about Conant, you think about

Geneva – you think about all these great teams we’ve played, and we’re right there,” Nazos said. “We’ve got to overcome the last hurdle.”

Peez scored 14 points and Roberts added 11 for the Bulldogs.

Ralston liked the defensive spark off the bench from forward Stephen Moyer and praised Landi for helping compensate for an off night for junior post Loudon Vollbrecht.

It all added up to an entertaining edition of the rivalry, with Wayne Messmer’s pregame national anthem perhaps drawing a few extra fans into a crowded gym.

“This was what Geneva-Batavia should look like,” Ralston said. “Obviously, we wish it was on a Friday night rather than a Thursday, but kudos to our fans and to their fans for coming out.”

GENEVA – Celebrated Chicago national anthem singer Wayne Messmer sauntered off Geneva’s contest gym court shortly after 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

Vikings girls basketball players commenced mimicking Messmer’s crispness moments later. And they didn’t even have to croon.

Geneva blistered Batavia on 64 percent shooting in the first quarter and shot 56 percent for the game to remain unbeaten in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division. No question, the Vikings’ 66-36 victory featured plenty of synchronicity for the hosts.

“Absolutely,” senior forward Janie McCloughan said.

“Everyone on this team feeds off each other. Someone makes a good basket, then someone makes a good pass and it just kind of rolls. And then, before you know it, everyone’s playing to the best of their ability.

Especially in an atmosphere like this, it’s awesome.”

Geneva (14-5, 9-0 UEC River) scored in numerous ways against the Bulldogs (11-12, 4-4), ultimately working from the outside in and back again.

Freshman guard Margaret Whitley (11 points) drilled three of the team’s seven 3-pointers and was instrumental in the Vikings’ 6 for 10 firsthalf effort from long range.

Sophomore post Grace Loberg, hardly tentative from a sprained left ankle suffered during a tight home win against St. Charles North on Jan. 16, figured she was 90 percent en route to contributing 15 points and eight rebounds.

Loberg also considered having a Willowbrook McDonald’s Shootout game the night after the North win a built-in boost.

“I hadn’t played on it or walked on it, so it was kind of sore,” Loberg said. “So I was a little nervous. But once I started playing, it felt fine.”

Of course, she also proved a force inside at times. It all depended on Batavia’s ‘D’ as Geneva again relied on depth as it plays through injuries. McCloughan said she and teammates counted 12 significant injuries this season earlier this week.

“Ultimately, we just practice a ton of different scenarios in practice,” McCloughan said. “What to do if they’re in this or whatever, and just kind of prepare for any situation.

So I think that we are getting

better at reacting to what the defense is because we’re practicing more game-like situations, which I think is really helping our mindset with everything.”

On Monday, Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen lauded his team’s sound defensive acumen in a 37-30 win against Kokomo (Indiana) at Willowbrook. Batavia executed whatever defense Jensen called, a product of proper positioning and focus.

Geneva prompted Batavia’s first timeout after just 1:20, striking with early ball pressure and offensive precision.

Geneva eclipsed the 30-point

threshold midway through the second quarter en route to a 39-23 halfime lead.

The Bulldogs surpassed 30 points when leading scorer Hannah Frazier (16 points), hit a field goal with 6:11 to play.

“We wanted to mix it up more on defense, you know, and bounce back from man and zone, but we never really could get settled,” Jensen said.

“So we got stuck in zone a little more than I wanted, but even when we went man, we didn’t react well and anticipate some of the movements that we knew they were going to do.

“I’ve got to look back at what we’re doing, because like

I said, I think I just drastically misjudged. I thought we were really prepared. We just didn’t come out and have a very good game, unfortunately.”

Frazier did not attempt a field goal until 5:28 remained in the third quarter and scored 10 points after the break. Bethany Orman followed with six points.

Geneva, meanwhile, capitalized on connections even before it zeroed in from the floor. Ken Loebel, the father of former Geneva student-athletes Michaela and Alexa Loebel, is a branch manager at an investment firm Messmer serves as a founding partner.

NOTEWORTHY Bulldogs relish spotlight, spoils Batavia wrestlers ultimately embraced the stage that housed their Jan. 15 coronation as Upstate Eight Conference River Division champs.

Still, a not-so-funny thing happened on the way to the Bulldogs’ comfortable dual victory against Geneva at the Batavia Fine Arts Centre. Following a seasonlong script, they put grit over grandeur.

“That was definitely the point of conversation pretty much every day in practice,” junior 220-pounder Dylan Uzumecki said. “We tried not to wrap our heads too much around what’s going on, all the extras. We wanted to stay focused and come out as conference champs.”

As a result, Batavia accomplished a seasonlong goal, completing a 7-0 run through conference duals that reached an early crescendo with a Dec. 12 victory at St. Charles East, which entered the season with three straight UEC team championships.

“It’s big steps,” Bulldogs 145-pounder Nolan Adams said. “We’ve all been putting in lots of work in the offseason.

We’ve got a lot of camps going and all kinds of clinics and stuff.”

As for the venue, the BFAC earned strong reviews as nearly every seat in the theater was filled.

Montgomery-based Technical Theatre Services augmented the atmosphere

with professional lighting and video displays.

“I knew this was going to be interesting and whatever, and I know other teams have done this on the stage, but, you know, we dropped some serious money on this, and I just didn’t know what to expect,” Bulldogs coach Scott Bayer said. “And they delivered. It was a great experience.”

Vikings on the mend The Bulldogs welcomed more than a boisterous crowd against the Vikings.

They also had four starters back in the fold, giving the lineup a full feel for the first time in weeks.

Geneva, meanwhile, coped with its own injuries.

“Our [healthy] guys wrestled fine,” coach Tom Chernich said, “and our other guys didn’t wrestle six minutes. …

But we didn’t want to forfeit anything.

[Batavia] went through a lot of work, put on an excellent show, so we wanted to make sure all the kids got matches.”

The Vikings will host the UEC tournament beginning today and are optimistic about getting healthy as regionals loom in two weekends.

Until then, Geneva’s veteran core has helped maintain the morale in the mat room.

“My seniors, I feel real good about,” Chernich said. “Mike Huck’s going to be a state qualifier. Austin Chaon. They’ve

both had a lot of tough matches. Colin Parsons looked great at the Newbill [Invitational]. Brock Perry wrestled well.

NAPERVILLE – Buoyed by boisterous fan support and what coach Tawny Powers called “eight incredible seniors,” the St. Charles East competitive cheerleading team earned its third straight Upstate Eight Conference River Division title Thursday night.

“We get to keep the trophy this year and keep it home with us, so that’s definitely something that we’re proud of, to hopefully keep this tradition climbing,” Powers said.

East clipped runner-up Streamwood in the eight-team event at Neuqua Valley, as Powers lauded the contributions of seniors Emily Daley, Miranda Doria, Arielle Gardner, Alyssa Karamitsos, Marissa LaGioia, Olivia Lutz, Alexia Stelmar and Peyton Zylke once more.

By BRIAN SANDALOW For the Chiacago Sun-Times CHICAGO – Pau Gasol’s first season with the Bulls has gone better than anybody expected. On Thursday he was rewarded.

Before the Bulls’ game Thursday against the San Antonio Spurs, Gasol was announced as one of the Eastern Conference’s three front-court starters for the NBA All-Star game. Gasol, 34, entered the day second on the Bulls with 18.7 points a game and while leading them with an average of 11.4 rebounds.

His 24 double-doubles led the NBA, and on Jan. 10 his 46-point, 18-rebound game against Milwaukee was the NBA’s first 46-18 performance in almost four years.

The all-star appearance will be Gasol’s fifth, and first since 2011. It will also be his first appearance as a starter after garnering 974,177 votes.

“I think he’s earned it. I think he’s played at an extremely high level the entire season,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “He’s been strong on both sides of

the ball.”

Gasol signed a three-year contract with the Bulls in July, leaving the Lakers after spending parts of seven seasons with the Lakers. One of the teams that courted Gasol was the Spurs, and though coach Gregg Popovich was disappointed to lose him, he has no problems Pau Gasol with the veteran’s new home.

“I’m thrilled he’s in the East,” Popovich said. “We tried to convince him to come to San Antonio and he chose Chicago. He made a good choice. He fits right.

“If we weren’t going to get him I certainly didn’t want to see him on another team in the West, that’s for sure.”

Gasol will start for the East, alongside LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, John Wall and Kyle Lowry at the Feb. 15 allstar game in New York. Jimmy Butler finished fifth among Eastern Conference guards with 455,756 votes, slightly ahead

of sixth-place Derrick Rose’s 379,994.

Out and out: As expected, Joakim Noah missed his fourth straight game with a right ankle problem. Somewhat more surprising was the absence of Mike Dunleavy, who was a game-time decision after taking part in the morning shootaround but missed his 11th straight with a jammed right ankle.

And Thibodeau doesn’t seem to have much of a guess about when Dunleavy might be back or if he could play Friday night in Dallas.

“Your guess is as good as mine,” Thibodeau said.

Without Dunleavy, Butler’s been forced to play more small forward instead of his natural shooting guard, and Thibodeau has liked what Butler’s done there.

“Whatever we need he provides, whether it’s scoring, defense, rebounding, playmaking,” Thibodeau said. “He’s invaluable to our team.”

Butler did start at shooting guard Thursday, with Tony Snell opening as the small forward.

Pressure on Toews to ‘draft’ Hawks

Cooper feeling good about pickups

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com Duncan Keith isn’t begging Jonathan Toews to be a high draft pick at Friday’s All-Star game fantasy draft.

Brent Seabrook isn’t lobbying, either.

Corey Crawford’s not angling for a job.

But that doesn’t mean Toews doesn’t feel at least a little schoolyard pressure heading into Friday night’s selection show, when he and Columbus’ Nick Foligno will pick teams among the 40 available players.

“As long as nobody gets picked last, it’ll be all right,” Toews said. “I don’t think you can let a teammate be in that position. That’s the only thing I’m worried about.”

That Toews – and not, say, Sidney Crosby or Steven Stamkos or Alex Ovechkin – was chosen to be the face (and name) of one of the teams speaks volumes about his standing in the league. But the honor means a little work for Toews, and a little pressure, too.

This is only the third fantasy draft since the league switched formats for the 2011 All-Star

game. Besides picking his team along with assistants Ryan Getzlaf and Rick Nash, Toews also will decide Saturday morning which of his players participate in which events at that night’s skills competition. And there’ll surely be some lobbying to deal with there.

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville might be watching while enjoying an apres-ski in Colorado.

He’s curious as anyone to see how Toews, Jonathan the consumToews mate captain, handles being a coach and general manager.

“I don’t know if he can afford the pay cut,” Quenneville said. “I think he’ll be all right, though.”

Patrick Kane is an assistant for hometown favorite Foligno, adding a little juice to the proceedings.

In 2011, Kane was an assistant for Nicklas Lidstrom’s team, and Kane made sure Lidstrom made Toews sweat a bit – not selecting his buddy and roommate until the eighth

round.

The duo twisted the knife in Toews a bit by picking former teammate Dustin Byfuglien in the seventh round. Then Patrick Sharp went with the next pick before Toews finally got the call.

Still better than being picked last, however. Toronto’s Phil Kessel still has never lived that one down. Being Mr. Irrelevant in a 40-person draft of nothing but all-stars is no great shame. But you can be sure it won’t be a Hawks player in that position, even if Toews does decide to have a little fun with his teammates.

“As long as you don’t put a guy in a position where he feels too embarrassed,” he said. “I think that’s the only thing that would get on anyone’s nerves.”

And for the record, there are no players Toews would feel uncomfortable playing with.

Even if a bitter rival – say, Joe Thornton – were in the draft pool, Toews doesn’t think it would be an issue.

“Guys do a good job of leaving it on the ice and not carrying it over and making things awkward socially at some of these things.” Toews said.

Hollywood Casino makes donation to Mooseheart KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com The Hollywood Casino in Aurora recently made a donation of $17,363 to Mooseheart Child City and School.

The donation will help fund the school’s renovation project and underwrite the costs of the Mooseheart Holiday Lights Program, according to a news release.

The money was accumulated through a donation for the Holiday Lights Program by Hollywood Casino, as well as a donation from patrons who participated in the casino’s “Cash 4 Kids!” scratch-off contest. The contest took place during three Thursdays in December, when casino customers visited the casino promotions area to make cash donations for a scratch-off worth up to $5,000 in cash, states the release.

A check for $5,000 was presented to Gary Urwiler, executive director of Mooseheart, by Rafael Verde, general manager of the Hollywood Casino in Aurora, at the casino’s corporate office Jan. 13.

In return, Urwiler presented a “Valued Sponsor Appreciation” plaque to Verde immediately following the check presentation.

Founded in 1913, Mooseheart is supported completely through private donations. Mooseheart is currently home to more than 210 students, ranging in age from preschoolers to high school seniors, and its headquarters are located on the Mooseheart campus. Since its founding, Mooseheart has operated a complete, accredited kindergarten-through-high-school academic program, including art, music, vocational training and interscholastic sports, according to the release.

During the Christmas season, the ministry wanted to reach out to homeless people on the streets of Chicago by delivering bags filled with a warm shirt, wool socks, gloves, a blanket, thermal underwear, a vest, flashlight, hard candies, a Subway or McDonald’s gift card, Christmas card and a sack lunch.

Addiction risk from powerful painkillers is usually low Dear Doctor K: My doctor has prescribed prescription painkillers – opioids – for my severe back pain. They relieve my pain, but how can I reduce my risk of becoming hooked?

Dear Reader: Simply being aware of the risk of addiction is a good first step in ensuring that you do not become addicted to prescription painkillers. I’ll explain a little bit about painkillers.

Then I’ll describe some steps you can take to prevent addiction.

Opiates are natural painkillers. They come from the seedpod of the Asian opium poppy plant.

They include opium, morphine and codeine. Your brain also makes its own natural painkillers, called endorphins.

Opioids are created by manmade chemical modifications of opiates. Examples of opioids include heroin, oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet) and hydrocodone (Vicodin).

Opiates and opioids are very effective painkillers. They bind to a group of receptors called opioid receptors. It’s like a lock and key: The opiate or opioid is the “key,” and when it attaches to a receptor (the “lock”), your pain is lessened.

There are opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord and in the gut. They also are on the white blood cells that are a key part of the immune system. We’re not

The natural painkillers that your brain makes (endorphins) also attach to these receptors.

When a person is badly injured, the brain releases these natural painkillers to try to reduce the pain.

Opiates and opioids reduce the intensity of pain signals reaching the brain and reduce feelings of pain. They can also produce a feeling of well-being and euphoria.

Most doctors consider it appropriate to prescribe opioids for chronic pain caused by cancer or for end-of-life pain.

But the use of opioids to treat other long-term problems, such as chronic back pain, arthritis or migraine headaches, is controversial. Some doctors worry that patients might become addicted. Other physicians argue that narcotics are safe prescribed in low doses for limited periods of time.

In truth, the risk of opioid addiction among people with chronic pain is low. But there are exceptions. Some people are born with a greater tendency to

become addicted. Anyone with a personal or family history of drug abuse or mental illness is at increased risk of addiction.

If you haven’t already done so, discuss with your doctor your treatment goals, how to take the medication safely and what side effects you can expect.

The following tips, from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, can further help you prevent misuse of prescription medications: • Keep your doctor informed about all the medications you take. This includes over-thecounter drugs.

• Take your medication only as prescribed.

• Read the information provided by your pharmacist before taking your medications.

• Discuss your medication with your doctor or pharmacist.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions if you are unsure about its effects.

• Throw away any unused pills once your back pain improves.

By working with your doctor, you can gain the relief these powerful painkillers provide while minimizing your risk of becoming addicted.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 20-year-old, self-sufficient female and share an apartment with my best friend who also works for the same company that I do.

A few weeks ago I met a really nice guy at a company party. We really hit it off and found out that we had a lot in common. He asked for my cell number and called to ask me out three days later. We went to dinner and a movie and had a great time. He asked me out several more times and I thought I may have found someone that I would like to get serious with.

1. How should South plan the play in seven spades after West leads the heart jack? Trumps are 1-1.

South starts with 12 top tricks: seven spades, three hearts, one diamond and one club. He would prefer not to have to take a finesse. Declarer should discard a club from his hand at trick one, draw the missing trumps, play a club to his ace (maybe West has a singleton king), cross to dummy with a trump and discard his last two clubs on the pair of heart winners. Then he ruffs a club in his hand.

If the clubs are 3-2, South plays a trump to dummy, ruffs another club, leads a diamond to dummy’s ace, and pitches his last diamond on the now-high club seven.

If West holds king-fourth of clubs, declarer runs his trumps for a show-up squeeze on West if he also has the diamond king (see the diagram). If East started with king-fourth of clubs, South will have to take the diamond finesse.

2. Suggest an auction. This is difficult, so I accepted anything sensible, even if it ended in six spades. In the given sequence, two no-trump is the Jacoby Game-Forcing Raise, and three hearts shows a singleton or void.

Then there is a lot of control-bidding (cue-bidding). Over five hearts, South, knowing that surely North would have control-bid five clubs (not five hearts) if he had that king, jumps to six spades.

North might well raise with so many extra values – but then again, he might not.
