love getting to do new things, and photographing hockey is one of the best new things I’ve been able to do this winter.

On Saturday morning, I had

the chance to photograph the Fox Valley Hawks, a team compiled of players from Geneva, Batavia, St. Charles North and St. Charles East high schools.

It happened to be a unique

experience for them, too, as it was on the outdoor ice rink at MB Financial Park in Rosemont. The rink was tucked between several restaurants and shopping areas, and the

sunny, blue skies were a great backdrop to the game.

Continued from page 2 balanced budget and we are not increasing our tax levy,” he said, “but appreciate that we are redirecting funds that we have used to reduce our debt, and we are redirecting them to new personnel expenses.”

Board Chairman Chris Lauzen criticized Lewis for his timing, stating that “there’s nothing in this proposal in the amounts that are new” and provided a list of past budget discussion opportunities.

Several others also defended the raises for the 11 directors. The increases totaled $29,709 collectively. With the exception of a new employee who received a prorated rate, the raises were for 2.5 percent.

Deborah Allan, D-Elgin, and Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, noted how the directors went without raises when the recession hit.

“Now’s the time to fulfill our implied promise to those who helped us bear the brunt of that recession,” Frasz said.

Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin, said the board is responsible for making sure it has the right employees, and that the pay increases reward the directors’ work.

“We have to provide these people with raises to keep them here,” he said.

With the exception of Lewis, the raises received unanimous support.

John Hoscheit, R-St. Charles, who chairs the Finance and Budget Committee, said the vote doesn’t mean the board will ignore Lewis’ concerns.

“Those are issues we deal with and have been dealing with year after year,” he said.

“Our surplus is narrowing.”

asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – With a multitude of challenges facing those wanting to do business in Illinois, industry experts recognize attracting and retaining businesses in the state can be like fighting an uphill battle.

In a panel discussion at the 2016 Economic Forecast – an event hosted by the Kane County Chronicle – speakers on Thursday addressed the effects of the state’s months-long budget impasse on businesses as well as other factors, such as rising taxes, that might turn companies elsewhere.

But panelist Jerry Peck of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association said the situation isn’t entirely bleak. He said the state boasts several features, including natural water sources, transportation systems and educational institutions, that make it desirable.

“This is a great place to do business,” Peck told those gathered at the Eagle Brook Country Club in Geneva.

Now in its second year, the Economic Forecast aimed to

provide insight into where the economy is headed and the biggest opportunities and challenges industry experts see facing their fields.

Keynote speaker Nicole Martin, the CEO and founder of HRBoost, addressed the skills gap or, as she termed it, the talent deficit.

“The talent war is done.

The talent has won,” she said, highlighting issues associated with having a shortage of qualified workers, such as companies poaching employees.

Peck said the skills gap is “huge” in manufacturing and will only increase as baby boomers retire.

Manufacturers can address the problem by engaging more with high schools and community colleges as well as working to change the perception that the work environment is dirty, dark and dangerous, he said.

In addition to discussing statewide issues, panelists spoke specifically about Kane County and its communities.

BATAVIA – Some Rotolo Middle School students are working on a long-term project to give people better insight into local fallen heroes.

In 2014, students in Julia Schaeffer’s eighth-grade social studies classes began a virtual Kane County War Memorial that provides more information, where available, on the veterans listed on the Kane County Veterans Memorial at the Kane County Government Center in Geneva.

The project is available to view on a public website – sites.google.com/a/bps101. net/kanewarmemorial – and the students continually update it, Schaeffer said.

Students have added links to relevant information on the veterans, created interactive maps, uploaded pictures and more.

The idea for the virtual project came from a class discussion about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Schaeffer said. She wanted students to create a digital companion to the Kane County Veterans Memorial in the same way people created virtual versions of the Vietnam memorial.

“First, and foremost, I would like students to see that history happens to real people,” Schaeffer wrote in an email. “That some of the people who died at these battles, like Pearl Harbor and Okinawa, were loved ones of their neighbors in Kane County.”

The students have been able to provide references or hyperlinks for 149 veterans listed on the Kane memorial, including all eight Spanish-American War veterans, 86 World War I veterans and 55 Vietnam veterans, Schaeffer wrote.

County Veterans Assistance Commission.

Students are utilizing programs and various online resources to enhance the virtual memorial. Nathan White, 13, used CartoDB software to create a map for the World War I landing page.

Classmates Ethan Jonke, 13, and Cameron Green, 14, came up with the idea to use a QR code generator to create an image people could scan at the memorial so people can go directly to the virtual memorial on their mobile devices.

Jacob Zimmerman, superintendent of the Kane County Veterans Assistance Commission, said he will reach out this year to the Kane memorial’s sculptor, Guy Bellaver, to see how he thinks a QR code might be permanently added to the sculpture.

Zimmerman then plans to take whatever Bellaver’s recommendation is to the commission in the spring for final approval.

The commission members are pleased to see the students’ enthusiasm in history and hope more people follow suit, Zimmerman said.

Eamon Samsami, 13, led a group presentation on the virtual memorial in November to commission members.

When Schaeffer presented the virtual memorial as a way to fulfill a project requirement in the class, Samsami said he moved forward with it because he thought it would be a fun and unique activity.

“I’m going to keep working on it as much as I can,” Samsami said.

Other students, including Elizabeth Shiver, 13, took pictures of some of the local veteran headstones in area cemeteries. Shiver said she like traveling to places in Kane County she had never seen before.

Schaeffer hopes that residents will contact her class through the virtual memorial website if they are able to share more about any of the veterans on the Kane County memorial.

“We would be interested in adding pictures and other information,” Schaeffer wrote.

In “Memorial Park,” a 13-year-old boy, “trying to find a father figure to take the place of his absentee, war vet dad … stumbles upon an alcoholic, war vet clown in the park,” said Wehrwein, the play’s writer and a 2001 graduate of Kaneland High School.

“Memorial Park” will be performed at 7 p.m. today and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the

black box theater at Kaneland High School, which is located at 47W326 Keslinger Road in Maple Park.

“I wanted to have a visual representaNic tion of meeting Wehrwein strangers and clowns and kids – kind of weird,” Wehrwein said. However, he added, “You can’t always judge a book by its cover.”

“Not everything is as scary as it seems,” Wehrwein said.

There will be “talk back” sessions after each performance, featuring Aurora-based Mutual Ground and Breaking Free, as well as the Kaneland Community Partners for Healthy Youth.

Wehrwein will appear for questions after Saturday’s show.

Dripps-Paulson said the play is in line with the previous two winter theater productions at the black box theater – “The Diary of Anne Frank” last year and “The Laramie Project” two years ago.

“It really lends itself well to a more serious theater piece,” Dripps-Paulson said of the black box theater.

Jon Green, a Warrenville-based engineer working with Mehta on the project, pointed to a variety of proposed improvements, including an outdoor seating area; landscaping and new retaining walls for the sloping property; a new masonry trash enclosure; and screening to prevent vehicle headlights from disturbing neighbors.

But the neighbors were not impressed and told planners to plug a hole in the proposal.

Mehta and Duerr said the Dunkin’ Donuts would create about a dozen new jobs. About four people would handle the doughnut sales during the busy morning hours, Duerr said.

BATAVIA – A proposal for a doughnut drive-thru service at a Batavia gas station has been rejected by city planners who would not glaze over the numerous zoning variances requested by the business owner.

Harry Mehta, owner of the Shell of Batavia station at 108 N. Batavia Ave., wants to lease a portion of his building to Dunkin’ Donuts, which would operate a drive-thru lane and walk-up counter.

The Batavia Plan Commission on Wednesday voted, 4-2, against approval of a conditional use permit for the proposal, which next goes to the Batavia City Council’s Committee of the Whole with the negative recommendation.

Planners objected to the nar-

row width and tight turning radius for the drive-thru lane, and said that the lane would be too close to a next-door residential property.

“I have real concerns with your layout, and I don’t like what I see,” plan commission member Gene Schneider said.

“I don’t think this [is] the right use for this property.”

Located at the northeast corner of Route 31 and Houston Street on the edge of the downtown area, the gas station has seen fuel sales decline steeply in recent years and needs an additional attraction to bring in customers and revenue, said Batavia architect Steve Vasilion, who was representing Mehta before the commission.

ER doctor testifies of need for alcohol, drug treatment center

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – An emergency room doctor testified Thursday at a continued zoning hearing that a proposed alcohol and drug addiction treatment center near Campton Hills is needed in the community.

Maxxam Partners LLC is seeking a special use permit from the Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals to convert the former Glenwood School for Boys, at 41W400 Silver Glen Road, into a 120-bed private pay, luxury treatment center.

Dr. Stephen Holtsford, a resident of Campton Hills, an emergency room doctor at Delnor Hospital in Geneva, and who also serves on the Maxxam

Partners advisory board, said he was testifying “because this facility is needed in the community.”

“As an ER doctor ... not a day goes by when I am not confronted with a patient having issues with drugs and alcohol,” Holtsford said. “Trying to get those patients treatment is almost impossible. And hopefully, this is a small step [to help] in getting them treatment. ...

I’m only here [testifying] because I think it’s best for the community.”

At earlier hearings, officials and residents of Campton Hills, Campton and Plato townships testified against Maxxam’s proposal, saying its clients would pose a danger to their community if they left the facility in

search of drugs.

Holtsford also testified that he did not have a problem with Maxxam having a detoxification center because withdrawal symptoms are managed by medications that have been used for decades.

Attorney Kevin Carrera asked Holtsford if he knew that 22 of the 23 detoxification sites in Illinois were at hospitals.

“Is that because detoxification is better handled at a hospital?” Carrera asked.

“I don’t have an opinion,” Holtsford said. “I’m not an addiction specialist.”

If more time is needed to hear testimony, additional hearings are scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, officials said.

“They’ve been successful in being creative,” she said.

Regarding real estate, panelist Austin Dempsey of BEI Properties said 2015 was one of the better years for residential real estate, and he expects that strength to continue.

However, he said, the commercial side doesn’t seem as promising.

“It’s a tough commercial market out there,” Dempsey said, noting much depends on location.

asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Casiello family’s plans to open a restaurant in the former Al Capone’s Hideaway and Steakhouse property remain at a standstill as it awaits a liquor license.

The Kane County Liquor Control Commission on Thursday tabled consideration of Hideaway 64’s application for 60 days, so a traffic study can be done.

Jeremy Casiello, a representative from the planned restaurant, told the commission that his family doesn’t want to invest time and money into the St. Charles Township site when it doesn’t know whether it will get a liquor license.

“It is going to be a large investment,” he said, noting plans for renovation, down to the studs.

Shirley Schiedler Mortensen passed away peacefully at William Beaumont Hospital, in Royal Oak, Michigan, on December 13, 2015.

Shirley was born and raised in Batavia, and graduated from Batavia High School in 1948. She went on to attend Aurora University, where she met her husband, Martin. After his Navy service, they settled in Michigan.

She was a substitute teacher for the Lamphere School District, and also was an organist for several Lutheran churches in the area. She received her LPN from Shapero School of Nursing, and her RN from OCC. She worked as a nurse for William Beaumont Hospital in Royal

Commissioner Deborah Allan, D-Elgin, noted the residents’ concerns and asked Casiello about the possibility of conducting community outreach. He said such meetings previously were held, and he is open to conducting another one.

Casiello referenced the good track record the family’s other establishments – Alley 64 in St. Charles and Palatine and The Dam Bar and Grill in Geneva – have with their respective communities.

“This isn’t our first time doing this,” he said.

He described the commission’s decision to table the matter as “pretty disappointing.”

A lot of people are calling, asking for jobs, he said, adding Hideaway 64 will create at least 30 jobs for the community.

Donald Trump is repaying a debt to Sarah Palin

Returning to the political stage this week to endorse Donald Trump, Sarah Palin showed she is, well, still Sarah Palin. With every sentence, a mouthful of gobbled words, misplaced modifiers and mixed tenses, all delivered in a high pitch, she accomplished the parlor trick of missing the point while going too far: “He’s got the guts to wear the issues that need to be spoken about and debate on his sleeve, where the rest of some of these establishment candidates, they just wanted to duck and hide. They didn’t want to talk about these issues until he brought ’em up. In fact, they’ve been wearing a, this, political correctness kind of like a suicide vest.”

Suicide vest references aren’t as bad as allusions to the Holocaust, but they’re still not advisable.

There were more unparseables as she took after President Barack Obama, returning as always to his early career as a community organizer.

The biggest beneficiary of the Palin revival may be “Saturday Night Live.” By giving the former Alaska governor so big a stage, Trump may be conceding that he’s never going to get anyone serious to endorse him.

But Palin also should be a reminder that political careers can end just as quickly as they rise.

A supernova who exploded and dissolved as a vice presidential candidate, the controversial governor who randomly fired people she didn’t like and pushed the Bridge to Nowhere quit her office 17 months early. She set about launching the Mamma Grizzly brand, featuring her husband, the First Dude, and their band of unruly children: the Kardashians, but with a penchant for dressing moose and catching salmon.

AMENDMENT

In a short time, her opinions weren’t as sought after and she faded from television. These days, news comes from tabloids covering her family’s brawls (the latest incident: the arrest on Tuesday of her son Track for domestic violence and possession of a firearm while intoxicated).

It’s hard to measure her political popularity now. Had the Trump event in Norwalk, Iowa, on Wednesday morning drawn a huge crowd because she was supposed to be there? (Inexplicably, she was a no-show at that rally but turned up with the Donald at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the afternoon.) Is the Trump gambit the equivalent of an off-Broadway tryout to reprise her role as a vice presidential candidate?

Trump probably doesn’t believe the Republican ticket lost to a community organizer in 2008 because the running mate couldn’t name a Supreme Court nominee or a newspaper. Instead, he may blame the non-war hero John McCain for the debacle.

In Alaska, Palin’s star has collapsed upon itself. When she talked about running for the seat of Sen. Mark Begich in 2014, one poll found her favorability rating in the state was upside down: Only 39 percent approved of her. A Public Policy Polling survey found that 54 percent of likely Alaska voters had an unfavorable view of their former governor.

Regardless of his motivation for bringing her on, Trump is unwittingly acknowledging the debt his seemingly unstoppable ascent owes to Palin. She laid the ground for Americans to embrace a candidate almost entirely lacking knowledge of the issues and running mostly on personality. He doesn’t need Palin to sell him to his crowds. He does need to thank her.

STC optimistic for full-strength lineup come postseason

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Spending your senior season watching the sport you love is not an easy thing to do.

St. Charles East senior Devon Ross has had to do just that in her final go-around as a member of the St. Charles coop gymnastics team.

Along with newcomer Mychaela Guy, a sophomore at St. Charles North, Ross has had to sit out with injuries, but the team has strong optimism that both will compete during regionals.

“We’re obviously not full strength right now,” St. Charles co-op coach Amy Wojdelko said after Wednesday’s dual meet win over Batavia.

“Right now, with Dev and Mychaela out, we just have to hope for the best and hope to get as close to a full-strength lineup as possible.”

Ross (shin stress fractures) has missed the past week, while Guy (sprained knee) will have been out for month if she doesn’t compete in the conference meet Jan. 30 at Oswego.

In their absence, the likes of senior Dani Buoy (North), and sophomores Emma Grace Redmond-Mattucci (North) and Grace Levita (North) have tried to pick up the slack.

It was hard to be frustrated or upset with a senior night performance that found the co-op on top of Batavia on Wednesday night, but Wojdelko knows the team is far from where she’d like it to be.

We need to stay on the beam ... bottom line. It’s not a lack of effort, though. The girls have worked extremely hard all season, but at this point, the execution is huge.”

Wojdelko was quite optimistic to have Ross and Guy back, probably not for conference at Oswego, but more than likely for regionals at Geneva on Feb. 2.

“That’s the plan,” Wojdelko said about being at full strength for the postseason.

“You’ve got to hope for the best and hope for full strength, having the girls back by regionals, especially. That’s all we can do.”

Buoy, on the other hand, has tried to make the most of her senior season. The North senior took third in the vault, uneven bars and floor exercise Wednesday night in the final regular season meet of her

high school career.

She also knows what this team is capable of with everyone in uniform.

“I definitely think we have a lot of potential with this group. We want it,” Buoy said.

“If we can get healthy for this final push here, we could do it.

We could do some really good things.”

Not just Buoy, either. Although Wednesday was their chance to show off the hard work they have put in at the

St. Charles Gymnastics Academy all season – with their lone home meet – fellow North senior Courtney Kellenberger wants to make sure this senior class leaves its mark.

“We know things are getting down toward the end,” Kellenberger said. “We just want to make our final statement ... throw that final punch, you know. We’re doing everything we can to make sure it doesn’t end sooner than we want.”

problem at times for East, with 17 turnovers, a much higher number than Woods expects.

However, Woods also credited the Sabres Thursday night, saying Streamwood took advantage of a lot of those mistakes, as well.

“I credit Streamwood because they play hard and don’t stop playing,” Woods said. “We just need to be better for playing for 32 minutes, no matter who we are playing. It’s been happening all year ... whether it’s taking plays off or not taking care of the ball, it has to get better.”

It wasn’t by the biggest of margins or in the prettiest of fashions, but Hondlik, Ford and the Saints continue to march on and weather the storm. The win keeps East in the conference title race, as it remains two games back of Batavia’s 6-0 start in conference.

Another loss could drop the Saints out of that discussion, and they are well-aware of that.

“The goal since Day 1 has been a conference title,” Hondlik said. “Every time we come out here, these games are huge.

We can learn from tight games like this. I feel like we have had so many. But we need to realize that we won and that’s the most important thing.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North girls bowling team rolled a season-high series in Thursday’s 3,093-2,776 loss to West Aurora at St. Charles Bowl.

Alyssa Byers (649 series) and Claire Sebastian (616) paced the North Stars with respective season highs to help North challenge the Blackhawks, who finished fourth in the IHSA state meet in 2014-15.

Batavia girls hoops to host “Winter Warm-Up” BATAVIA – The Batavia girls basketball team, in conjunction with the Batavia High School Interact Club, is collecting donations of coats, hats gloves, etc, for its “Winter Warm-Up” program.

While many boys basketball teams wait until the postseason elimination games to have that mentality, St. Charles East has gotten a head start on just that.

The Saints found themselves in another battle with Streamwood Thursday night, but experience paid off and East got back on the wining track, 65-54, to pick up a big Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory. “”It’s been like that all year,” East coach Pat Woods said. “It’s been that survive and advance type mentality for us almost every game, it feels like. With what we have had to go through, a win is a win and sometimes you have to take it as just that.”

It did seem as though East (98, 4-2 UEC River) was going to cruise early, thanks to senior forward Zach Hondlik’s strong start. He scored nine of his 17 points in the first quarter to help the Saints build an early 10-point edge.

But back came the Sabres.

After trailing by nine at halftime, Streamwood (4-17, 1-6) dwindled a once 13-point East advantage down to nothing as it

knotted the score at 40 heading to the fourth quarter.

J.T. Ford – who scored a team-high 18 points – hit a crucial 3-pointer after a three-point play from Evan DiLeonardi and a long ball from Zach Mitchell to start the final period. In the blink of an eye, East was back up by nine and never looked back.

“We were playing flat and I think we just had to get our heads back in the game,” said Hondlik of a third quarter in which East was outscored, 169. “Once we stopped turning the ball over and found the open guy, things kind of turned around.”

Ford scored 12 points in the fourth quarter, helping keep Streamwood at bay. The Sabres never came within seven points after his 3-pointer.

The 6-foot-4 senior guard knows when his team moves the ball and makes the extra pass, the results are usually positive.

“We got better looks to start the fourth quarter,” Ford said.

“That comes from moving the ball a lot better, getting in the lane and kicking to the open guy. We also took care of the ball much better. All of those things kind of go hand-in-hand and helped us get back on track.”

The quest to bring the Rockets’ wrestling program its first state title has driven him.

Whether it’s waking up ear- Austin ly for weight Macias training sessions, drilling hard in the mat room at after-school practices or staying late to get extra cardiovascular conditioning, Macias again has risen to the upper echelon of the rankings in his sophomore season.

But don’t tell him about his ranking. He’s focused on bringing a trophy back to Burlington Central.

“I like to represent my city,” said Macias, who is ranked No. 5 at 120 pounds in Class 2A by Illinoismatmen. com. “Other schools wanted me to go there, but I felt like this was my home. This is where my whole family went.

I went here to put Burlington Central on the map and make my town proud.”

Macias had been on Burlington Central coach Vince Govea’s map since grade school. His character stood

Even though Macias bypassed the 113 pound weight class after wrestling at 106 last year – a 39-3 season that included regional and sectional titles and culminated in a state berth – he hasn’t had a steep learning curve.

“Austin wants to do it for his town and his community,” Govea said. “He’s proud to be at Burlington Central. He’s got a real sense of community and knows we’ve never had a state champion before. That’s his ultimate goal.”

Last season, Macias’ goto move was a double leg takedown. At 106 pounds, he could load up and overpower his opponents. While he had a strength advantage, there was a tradeoff when he competed at the lower weight class.

In order to maintain his weight, Macias felt he lost some strength and was prone to getting too worn out.

“I like to get in there and beat on guys. I wrestle with the attitude no one is going to outwork me,” Macias said.

“At state last year, I didn’t feel great at 106 pounds. This year I wanted to feel good all year.

At 120 pounds I feel stronger, faster and bigger. But the guys I’m going up against are also stronger.”

As the strength edge he held over opponents has evened out, Macias’ strategy has seen an adjustment. He still wants to be a high-octane wrestler who wears out opponents through a high work rate, but he looks more frequently to hit a high crotch move.

In addition to the adjustment of his move set, Macias adopted a new mindset. Because Macias (23-1) entered last year’s state tournament ranked No. 2 on Illinoismatmen.com, he’d calculated the entire bracket before he took the mat.

He’d fictitiously placed himself in the semifinals and said a lack of focus caught up with him in the quarterfinals and led to a loss. Macias was a match short of placing at state, and said being ranked No. 2 was actually a mental burden. While he said he hasn’t looked at the rankings this year, he’s “heard” he’s not ranked as high.

Without undue rankings expectations, he’s wrestling free and easy on the mat.

NOTEWORTHY Saints drive for five

Newcomers and veterans alike have fueled St. Charles East’s remarkable run in the Upstate Eight Conference tournament.

So it goes should the Saints earn a five-peat in the event when competition descends on West Chicago this weekend.

Ten athletes earned top-five finishes to lead the 2014-15 team’s charge to a crown, and although several return, another cast of fresh faces stands primed to join the cause.

“Individual tournaments, you kind of tailor your lineup there for individual success, but I think this one, we might approach it a little bit differently to try to see if we can win it again,” Saints coach Jason Potter said. “That’s obviously our goal going into the conference tournament is to try to win the thing. We’ve got to make sure that we’re full and we’re healthy.”

East’s usual suspects include topof-the-lineup staples Joe Ruffino (106 pounds) and Anthony Rubino (126).

Rubino, a Northern Illinois-bound senior, won 43 matches and placed fifth in Class 3A as a junior.

Among the stable of freshmen stepping in, 220-pounder Justin Hull gains added attention considering his weight class. Potter, a former Saints athlete before becoming a coach, knows it’s novel to have a freshman excelling at 220 the way Hull has.

“He just keeps getting better and better and better,” Potter said. “He understands his limitations, being a freshman at that weight, and he’s been doing an awesome job. … It’s pretty impressive.

He’s only beating juniors and seniors.

He doesn’t run against any freshmen at 220. I’d be surprised if there were very many of them at all.”

North Stars ‘step up’

East and crosstown rival St. Charles North have shared a handful of tournaments before conference, but the programs will not tangle in a UEC River dual until Jan. 29.

The North Stars program has contin-

ued growing under third-year coach Ben Hummel, and this season traditionally have filled 11 of 14 weight classes for conference duals.

“Hopefully, at the conference tournament we’ll continue to have guys step up,” Hummel said.

Chad Reynolds, a conference champion at 160 last season, has missed most of the season with a separated shoulder but is eager to bring hardware back to the North Stars’ mat room after returning last week.

“Our practices have really started to get intense toward the end of the year, which is really good,” Reynolds said.

“You always want everyone to start really focusing at the end of the year and not sidetracked and thinking about other stuff.”

Reynolds cut one weight class this winter and will compete at 152.

“It was a little hard at first, but now that I’m constant there, it’s been going good,” Reynolds said.

MARMION’S MIDDLEMEN What happened: The middle of Marmion’s lineup proved especially effective in a 54-15 victory against visiting Montini on Jan. 15.

A.J. Jaffe started the trend with a fall at 145 pounds before Trace Carello (decision, 152), Nate Jimenez (technical fall, 160) and Matt Ferraro (major decision, 170) followed.

HITTING REWIND

Until Jan. 15, Marmion’s wrestling past never had included a dual meet victory against Montini. Things changed for the good with several potential future Cadets on hand. On Grade School Night at Marmion, the Cadets’ A.J. Jaffe earned a fall at 145 pounds to give his team an 18-15 lead.

The Cadets did not lose another bout after that, topping the Broncos, 54-15.

COMING ATTRACTION The state series is on the horizon now that conference tournament weekend has arrived. St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Batavia and Geneva are bound for the Upstate Eight Conference meet at West Chicago. For Kaneland, it’s a trip to DeKalb to vie for Northern Illinois Big 12 bragging rights.

Marmion and St. Francis, meanwhile, will head to De La Salle for the Chicago Catholic League meet.

GETTING AHEAD Powerball lottery hype passes; on to other topics

Not much was said about that really loud ripping sound, as so many of us dispensed of our Powerball tickets and accompanying lists of benefactors.

My strategy had been to consider a large Lithuanian-style bacon bun, made with the good-stuff filling in the middle and approachable with various-sized bites.

I had actually reserved some small bites of prize money for some of you folks for sticking with this old dame through the years.

I used to have the leverage to declare, “Drinks on the house,” down at what is now the Second Street Tavern.

My fantasy was to once again be the generous and slightly oblivious life of the party.

Let me report a really big bite of the bun was to go to an urgent and compelling cause – pursuit and prevention of animal cruelty.

It’s kind of complicated to get to the point of those helpless/defenseless critters, such as the one chained out in the neighbor’s yard.

We start with the food chain that presents us with roast beef, pork chops, bacon, the finger-licking chicken, the holiday bird, milk, eggs and cheese.

We know the process, yet have closed off any mindful-

Then there are those critters that are at the bad end of a chase through the woods.

They are celebrated for their guile, at least.

Critters that invade where not invited – in the attic, under the deck and walking down the street – get close to that whole notion of property, that which is necessarily protected.

What follows then is the ownership of domestic animals and the accompanying supposition of the right to do privately what might be challenged in public.

Up until lately, cruelty – such as leaving an animal out in the cold or suppressed in the heat – has been disapproved o but not a breaking of the law.

One had to be a “busybody” to intervene and rescue the critter. Now, the laws have outlined the obligations for pet owners to provide humane treatment and have outlined violations and punishments, such as fines.

So I am suggesting the fresh approach to rally against these ignorant or defiant owners.

We can be “busybodies” who are armed with the loving intentions to rescue these creatures – and backed by an arm of the law.

There are, not surprisingly, studies that infer that people who have an ownership cloak to justify cruelty to animals have questionable relationships with children.

This is clearly not absolute, yet does open the conversation.

Finally, busybodies, these precious domestic animals need to be out of our shelters and into new homes with families.

We’re kind of full with sibling cats George and Gracie and Bucky (his face is so Badger-like), who were rescued and have ownership issues of their own.

Best we can do is beat the drum.

Back to the 7-Eleven, Mister Z. Get some more lottery tickets so we can give a big bite of the bacon bun to those busybodies.

Dean M. Barrett of St. Charles has been elected to the board of directors for King-Bruwaert House, a continuing care retirement community in Burr Ridge. Barrett recently retired as the senior vice president and global marketing officer for McDonald’s Corp. in Oak Brook, states a news release. A graduate of Northern Illinois University, Barrett earned a bachelor’s degree in communications/political science. He also attended the University of Chicago and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business to take strategic management and business classes. He currently serves on the Northwestern Medical Foundation Board and previously served on the Cadence Foundation Board.

Parksite Inc., which is based in Batavia and “continues to revolutionize the building industry,” has announced the appointment of Ron Heitzman to CEO, succeeding George A. Pattee, who will remain chairman of the board. “With close to 17 years of proven leadership as president and CFO, Ron is a natural fit,” said Pattee in a news release. “His industry knowledge, background and strong relationships are a perfect mix to lead Parksite.” Nationally, Parksite has nine locations and more than 400 employee-owners. “Our commitment has been, and will always be, to create demonstrable value for our customers, our suppliers and our shareholders,” said Heitzman in the release. “Growth and sustainability are important to all of our stakeholders, and we will deliver both.”

Colton Janes has been appointed state director of operations for Aqua Illinois. In his new role, Janes will oversee operations for all three service regions in Illinois and support plans for continued growth within the state, according to a news release. Janes previously served as the central area manager for Aqua North Carolina, where he managed nearly 400 water and wastewater systems across 10 counties. Aqua Illinois provides water and wastewater service to more than 63,000 homes and businesses in Kane, Cook, DeKalb, Boone, Champaign, Kankakee, Knox, Lake, Ogle, Vermilion, Will and Winnebago counties.

Greg Lind of Geneva has been appointed to the Northeastern Illinois Agency on Aging Advisory Council as a Kane County representative. He will serve the remainder of an unexpired term – until April 2018 – and then will be eligible for a full three-year term on the council, states a news release from the agency. Lind is retired after a career in personnel and project management, and he now is an active volunteer with The Salvation Army’s Golden Diners program, according to the release. Chartered in 1974, the Agency on Aging is a nonprofit agency dedicated to combining resources, leadership and expertise on aging in Kane, DuPage, Grundy, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties.

20 Right kind of chewing gum lowers risk of tooth decay Dear Dr. K: Why do dentists recommend chewing gum? Doesn’t gum cause cavities?

Dear Reader: Dentists don’t recommend just any chewing gum. They recommend sugar-free gum, specifically gum that contains xylitol, a sugar-free, no-calorie sweetener made from the bark of birch trees. It may actually lower your risk of tooth decay and cavities by interfering with the growth of harmful mouth bacteria.

Bacteria in your mouth eat sugar or starch that is found in the foods and beverages you consume.

Fueled by this energy, they grow, multiply and form plaque. That’s the bacteria-laden film that covers your teeth between brushings. Bacteria eating sugar and starch give off acidic waste that attacks tooth enamel. This acid in the plaque sets the stage for tooth decay, cavities and gum disease.

But bacteria in the mouth can’t digest xylitol.

That’s why this sweetener inhibits the growth of mouth bacteria and reduces the production of plaque and destructive acids. Xylitol may also prevent the production of a substance that helps plaque bacteria stick to teeth.

University of Minnesota researchers studied the effects of chewing gum on mouth bacteria.

They asked one group of volunteers to chew gum sweetened with xylitol for five minutes after each meal. Another group chewed a gum with sorbitol, another sugar-free sweetener.

A third group didn’t chew gum at all. After three months, the number of bacteria in the saliva of xylitol-gum chewers was lower than in the other two groups.

To reap these benefits, chew a piece of xylitol gum three or four times a day for at least five minutes. Sugarless gum with-

Carbohydrate-containing foods, including bread, cereal, rice, other grains, beans, fruits and vegetables, contain sugars and starches that feed the bacteria that live in your mouth. However, these foods are part of a healthy, balanced diet.

But there are other types of starches and sugars that promote cavities and are not part of a healthy diet. For many reasons, not just preventing dental problems, it’s best to minimize them in your diet: • Sticky sweets such as honey, molasses, chewy candy or raisins.

• Slowly dissolving sugars, such as those from slow-melting hard candies.

• Starch and sugar combinations, such as those found in cookies, cakes and other sweet baked goods.

Finally, if you eat sweets before bedtime, be sure to brush before heading to bed. Otherwise, the sugar will stay in your mouth and on your teeth overnight.

If you have had many cavities, or gum disease, you might talk to your dentist about using sugar-free gum with xylitol after every meal. Also ask your dentist about the value of these practices: • Brushing your teeth after every meal; • The best toothpaste for you; • Whether the tap water in your community is fluoridated.

A person must ask for help to change Dr. Wallace: I read your column regularly, and every now and then I am reminded of myself as a teen and, in fact, a recent letter could have been written by me when I was 16.

A young girl asked for your advice about a young man she was dating who had three nasty habits – smoking, drinking, and abusing drugs. She had never been involved in any of these kinds of dangerous habits, and she sincerely thought she could influence him to stop all three of them. Since she is a regular reader of your column, I would like to share some of my own life experience with her and hope you will print my letter.

When I was a teenager, I also thought I had the power to help someone change his ways. When I was 16, I was dating a guy who was 18. He was heavily into cigarettes, marijuana, alcohol and even cocaine. Many times he did not show up at school on a Monday because he was bombed from the weekend. My parents told me he was nothing but a loser and tried to get me to stop seeing him; but I ignored their advice, because I thought my love could change him.

First, I tried to get him to eliminate cocaine, because it was the worst, in my opinion.

I told him if I ever caught him with cocaine again I would stop seeing him. I thought after he quit cocaine, the other three would be easy, and he would soon be free of all of it.

Unfortunately, he did not stop

He had several serious altercations with the law, and finally ended up in a halfway house. My parents were right.

I finally came to the conclusion that I couldn’t make him change, because his love of drugs was stronger than his love for me.

I was terribly disappointed and frustrated that I could no longer help him, but he was the only one who could turn his life around. – Eve, West Chicago,

percent. A person can change his negative lifestyle and become a model citizen, but first he must admit that his lifestyle has an abundance of flaws and he must want to change it for the better.

In most cases, the person must ask for help. Rarely can those addicted to various substances overcome the addiction alone. A good source of help is the 12-step program offered by Alcoholics Anonymous.

Dr. Wallace: I’m in the eighth grade and I’m a good athlete. I will play football when I’m in high school. I think I’ll try out for an end position because I’m pretty fast and I can catch the ball. My dad said that I could

go out for football, but that he wants me to play defensive back because he said that offensive players get hurt a lot more than defensive players do.

I think he’s just making this up because he was a defensive back when he played football in high school and he wants me to follow in his footsteps. I think defensive players are more likely to get hurt, don’t you? – Kyle,

is a contact sport, and even with the best and most sophisticated protective gear, players can suffer injuries. Several years ago, the National Athletic Trainers Association conducted a study of injuries incurred by high school football players. Data was gathered from 123 schools.

Maybe your dad read the report. It reported that offensive players received 55.5 percent of the injuries, compared to 35.8 percent for defensive players, and 8.7 percent for special team members. Running backs were injured the most. Interestingly, 61 percent of all high school football injuries occurred during practice.

Hip/thigh/leg injuries were the most common (17.3 percent), followed by forearm/wrist/hand (15 percent), knee (14.5 percent) and ankle/foot (14.2 percent). All other injuries totaled 39 percent.

Football, indeed, is an extremely physical sport.

In my Christmas Competition, you had to plan the play in four hearts after West led the diamond 10.

You win with the ace, draw trumps, and lead your remaining diamond.

If West plays low, put in dummy’s seven.

Then you cannot go down! Suppose East returns a diamond. You discard a spade from hand, cash the spade ace, ruff a spade, return to dummy with a trump, ruff the last spade, and play a club to the jack. You must either get a club trick or benefit from a ruff-andsluff.

If West puts up the diamond eight or nine at trick four, win with dummy’s king and lead the diamond seven.

If East covers, discard a spade.

Here, again, you make the contract by eliminating spades and endplaying East in clubs.

Or, if East plays a low diamond, you ruff and continue with the spade jack.

If West does not cover, you play low from dummy and once more will get home.

Or, if West covers with the spade queen or king, you win with the ace and lead back a spade. If East wins that trick, you are safe.

At the worst, West takes this trick and shifts to a club.

Then you must hope that West has one of the high clubs (as you must if hearts are 3-0).

Dear Abby: We recently lost our dog, a 13-year-old springer spaniel, to old age.

His passing has left a huge hole in our hearts and lives.

We miss his companionship, his personality and the structure that caring for him brought to our lives. We’re 51 and 60, own our home and are financially secure.

Some of our friends are discouraging us from adopting another dog. They say we travel too much. Last year we spent 12 weeks away from home. When we travel, we hire a trusted pet sitter to move into the house and attend to all our dog’s needs.

Our pet always seemed happy and healthy when we returned.

I anticipate that we will continue to travel a similar amount in the future, but I’m not sure we will enjoy coming home to a house that has no dog to welcome us back. Abby, should a retired couple who travels adopt a dog? – Pet Lover in Mexico Dear Pet Lover: At ages 51 and 60, if you and your husband are in good health, I see no reason why you shouldn’t adopt another dog if you wish. Consider adopting one that is no longer a puppy. Shelters and rescue organizations are good places to adopt an older dog that needs a loving home.

Dear Abby: My neighbor complains of cars honking at 8 in the morning. I have done this only three times when I have taken my son to school.

I wait in the car for him, but if he’s late by a couple of minutes, I’ll honk.
