Batavia facing up to river shore erosion Crumbling dam is major worry for city officials

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The waters of the Fox River are eroding the Batavia shoreline, presenting the community with a challenge it could not ignore.

That was the consensus Tuesday as the Batavia City Council waded into a discussion of how to begin planning for the future of the river.

Such a future likely will not include the crumbling century-old dam just north of the downtown.

“The dam is starting to fail,” City Administrator Bill McGrath told aldermen.

Removal or catastrophic failure of the dam would lower river water levels as far north as Fabyan Forest Preserve in Geneva, and potentially turn Depot Pond into a mudhole, officials from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources have said.

“The dam is quickly eroding, and once it’s gone, we’ll have a Riverwalk without a river,” 7th Ward Alderman Dave Brown said, referring to the Batavia Riverwalk which was constructed by volunteer labor in the 1990s.

The Batavia City Council has budgeted $50,000 this year to begin looking into the Fox River and related issues. The dam will be one item that is discussed. found that Batavia residents wanted to keep the concrete structure in place.

Without the dam, maintaining water levels in Depot Pond would require closing the mouth of the pond with a berm at its north end, McGrath said.

Beyond the problems posed by the failing dam, erosion of the riverfront up and down Batavia’s stretch of the waterway is creating worries, McGrath said.

“We have erosion next to the main electrical substation, which can’t be allowed to continue,” McGrath said.

While the goal would be to maintain the river banks north and south of the downtown in a natural state, the area between the bridge and the dam in the heart of the city offers opportunities for “urbanization,” McGrath said.

The City Council has budgeted $50,000 this year to begin its investigation. McGrath said possibilities include a citizen’s committee that would make recommendations to the council.

Ownership of riverfront

properties is a complex patchwork of both public and private entities, including the city, Batavia Park District, Kane County Forest Preserve District and local businesses.

Intergovernmental cooperation will be critical, McGrath said, adding that city and park district officials will be meeting this week.

Mayor Jeff Schielke said the city should not count on any financial help from the state of Illinois, but the challenge must be faced.

“Over the years, a lot of things have been done to enhance the river, but we’ve still got some stuff to do,” Schielke said.

Elburn trustees deny village administrator’s resignation

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Erin Willrett remains Elburn’s village administrator, at least for now.

Elburn trustees, by a vote of 4-2, denied a motion to accept Willrett’s resignation. Those who voted against the motion said they would not approve a separation agreement that ac-

companied the resignation.

They said the preference was that Willrett remain in the role until early May, when village appointments are made.

Willrett was not at the meeting. Officials said she was on vacation through Thursday. The item had been on the agenda for the Elburn Village Board meeting on Tuesday.

arek, Dave Gualdoni, Pat Schuberg and Jeff Walter voted against accepting the resignation. Ken Anderson and John Krukoff voted to accept the resignation and the separation agreement.

Maple Park police chief plans May retirement

ksmith@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – After 40 years of public service in Kane and DeKalb counties, Maple Park Police Chief Michael Acosta plans to retire in May. Acosta, 61, joined the Maple Park force as its leader in 2009 after in 31 years of work at the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, he said.

Under Acosta, the Maple Park police raised more than any department in the state in the Torch Run for Special Olympics fundraiser in two consecutive years, and mended what he felt was a disconnect between the community and local law enforcement.

Family matters, however, have encouraged Acosta to announce the retirement he had been considering for the past few months.

“My mother-in-law has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and is not expected to live long,” Acosta said. “So I started thinking you need to start enjoying life before your life is taken from you, because you don’t know how long it’s going to be.”

His time as police chief added an element of structure to the community, Village President Kathy Curtis said.

“Chief Acosta brought professionalism and stability to the Maple Park Police Department,” she said. “I think he’ll be best known for the relationships he built with the residents

and the businesses in Maple Park.”

From his first day on duty, Acosta’s energy was focused on repairing what he saw as a fractured relationship between the department and the community, starting with its children.

“The kids, when we first came in here, there was like a wall between us,” Acosta said.

“Now I have kids stop in my office and there will be five or six bikes outside stopping in to talk to the chief or the police officers.”

Acosta packed a room at Village Hall with arcade games, couches and a popcorn machine, so he could host a regular movie night with the community’s children and the police department.

The spot also served as a safe alternative for kids who might otherwise find themselves running with the wrong crowd, Acosta said.

“If we don’t reach our kids at an early age, like about 10 or 11, somebody else on the street will and that’s where the gangs come in and that kind of negative influence comes into their lives,” he said. “It’s not a problem in Maple Park, but to avoid that, that’s what we do. You want to get your children active in something soon.”

The hangout is supervised by volunteers and open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Although Acosta hopes to spend his retirement sleeping into the early afternoon at his Sugar Grove home, he plans to

stay involved with one of his favorite organizations.

“He brought community pride to the community by working with the Special Olympics,” Curtis said.

In both 2013 and 2014 Maple Park took first place in the state by raising the most money for the organization.

“I have a small police department,” Acosta said. “I’m the only full-time guy and I have seven part-timers. We’re not a 24-hour police department, and we only have 1,400 people here in this town, yet in 2014 we raised the most [money] that they’d ever seen.”

As Acosta and his wife, Karen Acosta, prepare to settle into retirement with each other, the Village Board is in search of a new police chief, someone they hope to promote internally, Curtis said.

The board will decide by its Feb. 2 meeting if they will begin an outside search.

Acosta has just a few words of advice for whomever the board chooses.

“The community will tell you what their main complaint is,” he said. “People wave at you now. They like the police here.”

Report: Campton Hills leads state of Illinois in safety

According to its website, HomeSnacks – which uses data and analytics to deter-

mine the quality of life for places nationwide – based its rankings on the FBI’s 2014 Uniform Crime Report for 202 communities with populations of at least 5,000.

Three criteria were considered: violent crimes – murders, assaults, rapes, armed robberies – per capita; property crimes – thefts, burglaries,

motor vehicle thefts – per capita; and total crimes per capita, according to the report.

The analysis showed that those in Campton Hills have a 1-in-115 chance of being the victim of a crime.

The Tri-Cities and other neighboring communities also made the list. Geneva ranked 16th; South

Elgin placed 64th; St. Charles notched 81st; North Aurora fell at 91st; Batavia scored 98th; Aurora got 120th; and Elgin was 126th, according to the report.

Mount Vernon ranked as the most dangerous place, the study found, noting residents there had a 1-in-16 chance of being the victim of a crime.

HomeSnacks noted that the study just looked at where crimes occurred most, based on a city’s population.

“This report is not an analysis of the effectiveness of local police departments, nor does it reflect the fact that people from out of town may come into a community and cause a crime,” the report states.

ST. CHARLES – Two state construction projects on Route 31 are expected to affect travel in and around St. Charles, according to a city news release.

The Illinois Department of Transportation projects will affect Route 31 between Crane and Ferson Creek roads, and Route 31 at Silver Glen Road, the release states.

IDOT plans to replace the culvert under the road at Ferson Creek and widen and resurface the road, according to the release. It indicated utility relocation work has started. The project has a fall completion

date.

According to the release, the work at Route 31 and Silver Glen Road includes the installation of a traffic signal and widening and resurfacing Route 31 south of Silver Glen Road. Widening and resurfacing Silver Glen Road west of Route 31 also will be completed. The project has a summer completion date.

Traffic on Route 31 could be reduced to one lane at times during the work, the release states. Motorists should expect delays and plan for extra travel time.

Submissions for ArtsFest are due Feb. 14.

Set for the first weekend in March, ArtsFest aligns with Youth Art Month and Music in Our Schools Month, which are nationally recognized annual observances to emphasize the value of art and art education for children and to encourage public support for school art programs, the re-

POLICE REPORTS Kane County Sheriff • A resident of the 5N800 block of Route 25, St. Charles, reported Sunday, Jan. 17, that a barn on the property had been burglarized and was the latest in a string of incidents that made her believe someone might be trespassing on the property. Police reportedly found no signs of attempted forced entry.

• A Pace-Regional Transit Authority commuter bus was damaged in a hit-and-run accident about 3:05 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, while traveling south on Route 31 near Mooseheart Road in North Aurora. An oversized pickup truck similar to a heavy-duty

work truck reportedly struck the driver’s-side mirror. Repair costs were estimated at $300. The bus did not have passengers at the time of the incident.

Leannah, 23, of the 0-100 block of Grace Street, North Aurora, was charged Wednesday, Jan. 13, with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving without insurance, improper lane use and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after a crash in the 7N300 block of Route 31, South Elgin.

My early years were filled with frequent eye doctor visits, patching and wondering if I would need surgery. I can’t remember a time when I haven’t worn glasses, and from 15 months old and onward, they were simply a part of who I was.

I have two main issues with my eyes that require glasses to correct my vision. The first one is amblyopia, more commonly known as “lazy eye.” Basically, my brain doesn’t work properly with my eye, and – as a result – my vision is reduced and it’s difficult for my eyes to focus. The second is called strabismus, meaning one of my eyes doesn’t align with the other and turns in. As far as how these two conditions affect the way I see, I often have double vision without my glasses and have trouble with things like depth perception.

However, when I put my glasses on, it’s an entirely different story. I’m thankful to say that in contrast to my early years, my eyes are now quite stable. When I look through the lenses of my glasses, my eye that turns is held straight, and I can see clearly. I can do some things without wearing my glasses – for example, showering or going to get a drink of water in the middle of the night. But, for the most part, when I’m not wearing my glasses, I’ll get headaches and stumble around because it’ll be so difficult to see clearly. It’s made me appreciate the gift of vision, as well as recognize how lucky I am to have access to eye doctors who can help me see properly.

I definitely think there’s a bit of a stigma attached to glasses-wearers, from old children’s books mocking those

However, with this age of technology causing more vision problems and more people needing glasses, that negative image has definitely declined. That’s not to say I still don’t get little kids asking me why I have lines in the middle of my lenses (they’re called bifocals, kiddos) or people being dumbfounded as to why I don’t just take them off sometimes (I kind of need them to see ... ). But the increasing popularity of glasses as a fashion statement has contributed to the decreasing stigma associated with them, and – for that – I’m grateful.

My glasses have always been a part of my physical appearance, and even though it can be a hassle to maintain them from time to time, it’s worth it to be able to see clearly and perfectly. When you think about it, I have my glasses, while someone else might have their rainbow-dyed hair. Someone might be in a wheelchair; someone may have tattoos all over their body. We all have our “things,” some we choose, some that we don’t.

And as 4-year-old me once told a little boy who pestered and asked me why I wore glasses: “I like my glasses. They help me see, and they make me.”

Our “things” make us who we are. Why don’t we all try to “see” the good in what makes other people unique?

ANOTHER VIEW

Remember the vulnerable as well-to-do enjoy Internet benefits BLOOMBERG VIEW Much like the humans who invented it, the Internet is both wonderful and terrible. It creates and destroys, empowers and represses, edifies and stultifies – often at the same time.

A new report from the World Bank finds a few more things to worry about: The Internet disproportionately benefits the well-to-do, may worsen inequality, hasn’t boosted productivity as much as hoped, tends to favor monopolies, and is “far from sufficient” for alleviating poverty.

You might say that’s a pretty high bar for a technology that’s only a few decades old. Even so, the

report is a reminder that no technology is an unvarnished good, and progress has consequences – often quite unexpected ones.

The report is also clear on the Internet’s benefits.

But the authors warn, sensibly enough, taking full advantage of them requires things such as good infrastructure, prudent regulations, better education and responsive governance – the same things needed for any kind of development.

The notable wrinkle they add is that digital technology can amplify the effects of bad policy.

Poorly designed business regulation can give Internet companies excessive market power, thus inhibiting competition and harming consumers.

Failing schools become more of a liability when people have to compete with robots for low-skilled work. And unaccountable dictators find the Internet is an awfully convenient tool for control.

In short, the perils of digital technology – like much else in life – fall most heavily on the vulnerable.

This is still no reason to resist the Internet, as if you could, or to punish its purveyors. For all its faults, digital technology is still an extraordinary force for growth, inventiveness and problem-solving around the world.

But ensuring that its benefits are widely shared, and that its drawbacks are mitigated, requires some astute policy making.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Couple opens Romano Mercato Italiano in St. Charles

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Tony Romano grew up loving popular Italian foods like arancini and panzerotti. While many may ask what those foods are, Romano became accustomed to such items because he was born in Italy.

Authenticity always has been something that Tony and his wife, Isabella, have prided themselves on, even when they owned a fast food and pizzeria joint near O’Hare International Airport.

After selling that restaurant – and plans to move to the West Coast did not pan out – the Bartlett natives wanted back in the restaurant business. Thus, Romano Mercato Italiano was born.

“My husband has been making these types of foods his entire life,” Isabella Romano said. “We love this area, and – being from very close by – we decided to open up a place in St. Charles. We brought a lot of those authentic dishes that are a tradition from where Tony grew up.”

The delicatessen, located at 210 Cedar St. in St. Charles, is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The couple promised extended hours once the summer brings about nicer weather and an 80-person-capacity patio can be opened.

Romano Mercato Italiano, which officially opened Dec. 1, features a wide variety of items. From paninis to pasta and sandwiches to salads, there’s a good chance there’s something for everyone at the eatery.

But the pride and joy of the establishment all goes back to those two specialty items that Isabella Romano says have been “a huge hit.”

To start, arancini is an Italian rice ball, breaded and deep fried, and served with marinara sauce. There are two types on the menu – Ragu E Pisselli (ground

beef, peas and mozzarella cheese) and Ricotta E Spinachi (ricotta cheese, spinach and mozzarella) – and each order costs $2.50.

The panzerotti is a pizza puff, filled and deep fried. There are cheese, sausage and spinach options at Romano Mercato Italiano. Each costs $3.50.

Isabella Romano also said the paninis – which, like other menu items at the business, are homemade with meats that are sliced in-house – are items customers have raved about.

“We’ve been very, very happy with how this has started out,” she said. “A lot of our customers know us from our old place that we used to own and have come in for food here. They know our name and continue to support us, and it’s been great.”

Romano Mercato Italiano plans to

add beer and wine to its menu before the end of the month. Both Tony and Isabella Romano also wanted to make mention of their “variety dinners” – dinners that are pre-made, but not fully-cooked, that need to be baked in the oven, where the customer can get the feeling that they themselves cooked the meal.

“You can just grab it and take it home,” Isabella Romano said. “It’s been great to see how the customers have taken those right away. We call them ‘take-and-bake’ and have really gotten a great response with those.”

bar as a guest.

An overbearing eccentric, Ray sleeps upstairs in the abandoned hotel full of ghosts from the past.

He describes himself not as a vagrant but an itinerant homesteader.

Ever the skeptic who sees coverups at every turn, Ray dismisses visual evidence of the first moon landing, contending it was fabricated by a Hollywood studio, and he expresses doubt that the assassination in 1963 of President John F. Kennedy was as

straightforward as government officials would have the public believe.

Regarding the terrorist attack that killed nearly 3,000 and destroyed the World Trade Center, Ray is a doubting Thomas who sees the heavy hand of the government hiding key details about the actual event and withholding possible foreknowledge days preceding the disaster.

Meanwhile, disquieting input from a mysterious stranger (Joey Banks as

Palmer) who stops for a drink at the bar unsettles Janet and has her reassessing her grasp on her understanding of 9/11.

Adam also ends up in a hot spot owing to some clandestine dealings.

After viewing “Yankee Tavern” audiences as well may find themselves having second thoughts as they question long-held assumptions about conspiracy theories.

ST. CHARLES – “Yankee Tavern,” by playwright Steven Dietz, has a field day exploring conspiracy theories.

And in the hands of director Bernie Weiler, this involving production provides a snappy start to Steel Beam Theatre’s 2016 season.

The taut play raises questions about events surrounding the tragic events of 9/11, kindling suspicion about who knew what and when leading up to the worst terrorist attack on the nation.

It also examines the evolving relationships of its four characters.

All the action takes place during 2006 in a rundown New York City neighborhood tavern on the ground floor of a decommissioned old hotel scheduled for demolition.

Adam (Benedict L. Slabik III), who inherited the tavern from his late father, is pursuing a master’s thesis, though he’s reluctant to discuss the conspiracy theories that form the basis of his studies.

Janet (Brenna Welsh), his fiancé, discovers how little she really knows about the man she plans to wed and is upset that the wedding invitations for Adam’s friends have all come back “addressee unknown” or “no such person.”

‘Always be the rock for people’ Sommer channels leadership before joining USMC

kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jeff Sommer sported his St. Charles East wrestling warm-ups during a recent senior night ceremony.

His attire in the fall of 2012 triggered his four seasons in the Saints’ mat room and his spot in the festivities alongside his parents, John and Denise.

Seriously. Sommer and East coach Jason Potter corroborate the exchange during Sommer’s freshman football season.

“At that time I was kind of debating whether I was going to go out for wrestling, and (Potter) pulled me aside and he was like, ‘You’re wearing a Tap Out shirt and you have a buzz cut; you have to go out for wrestling,’ ” Sommer said.

In six months, Sommer plans to wear the uniform of a U.S. Marine Corps recruit.

He enlisted in September, following the path of his older brother, J.J., who is part of the USMC Reserves.

Smiling, Potter wonders whether the program’s latest military enlistee wasn’t foreshadowing his post-graduation path four years ago.

“I don’t know if it’s the mindset of the person we recruit or the mindset of the people they recruit, but either way, it seems to be a pretty solid fit for some of these guys,” Potter said.

Sommer began wrestling in fourth grade but only dabbled in the sport growing up, considering himself not “that much of a good kid” as an eighth-grader at Thompson Middle School.

His rise to the role of Saints’ starter at 160 pounds, then, reflects a newfound wrestling passion and an undying worth ethic.

Entering this weekend’s Upstate Eight Conference tournament at West Chicago, Sommer is 18-13 in his first

He filled in at 152 and 160 pounds as a junior.

“The difference between him last year and this year is night and day,” Potter said.

“And a lot of that’s maturity, but … he finally understands that outworking people works in wrestling.”

Potter and many of his coaching brethren often preach the importance of earning the first takedown in a match. To be sure, Sommer has won that distinction throughout the season, but he more often tops opponents behind longevity and stamina.

A four-year career as

a football linebacker also helped Sommer cultivate his toughness, and perhaps even sprout a military moxie.

He remembers end-ofpractice conditioning or “punishment” running and the instinct that he couldn’t decelerate or shy away.

“I mean, I would be tired, but I was still kind of like, ‘I’ve got to keep going,’ and stuff like that,” Sommer said.

“I was always trying to help pick people up. So just that mentality of trying to always be the rock for people.”

Sommer has corresponded with recent former Saints wrestler Jordan Meadows, now a Marine, about his fu-

ture path. He also knows 2015 East graduate Blake Fialka is a Marine and potential resource.

Potter, a St. Charles High product, was teammates with Kevin Milligan, who later competed at the Naval Academy, during the late 1990s.

“We tend to have at least one or two a year in the military,” Potter said.

Sommer still aspires to a business degree, and it’s possible he will pursue it before enlisting in the Marines, should he be awarded an ROTC scholarship for which he’s applying.

“The Marines is my plan, but I still want to go to col-

lege and get a business education,” Sommer said. “I still want to try to get a higher education, but still, the Marines is kind of calling me.”

Sommer said he came to that realization over the summer, balancing his feelings with a family military past that includes his brother, a grandfather who served the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and an uncle with an Air Force background.

His mohawk earlier this school year notwithstanding, Sommer typically keeps his hair short.

Team beats Batavia on senior night

ST. CHARLES – It’s rare an audience gets to see the work the St. Charles co-op puts in at the St. Charles Gymnastics Academy.

While the team does hold its practices at that venue, it only gets one opportunity a season to host a meet there – Wednesday against Batavia – which also brings about its senior night.

Though there was room to improve, the St. Charles co-op wasn’t going to let that opportunity go to waste as it defeated the Bulldogs, 138.900131.150, Wednesday night in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division dual.

“This is always the girls’ favorite meet,” St. Charles coop coach Amy Wojdelko said.

“This is the time they like to shine and show the work they have put in.”

St. Charles North senior Dani Buoy took third in the all-around scoring (34.750), including taking third in the vault (9.1), uneven bars (8.8) and floor exercise (9.1).

Though there were a few slip-ups for the St. Charles coop, particularly on the balance beam, Buoy said it helped to regain composure in an environment that they know very well.

“It’s our home gym, so we’re very comfortable here,” Buoy said. “We just wanted to go in like we do in practice and have fun and do our job. There were some falls and those kinds of things, but I mean I think tonight went pretty well. It’s all about repetition at this point in the season, so I think we will be all right.”

Wednesday marked the final regular season meet of the season for the St. Charles coop, with the next competition being the conference meet at Oswego, a week from Saturday.

North, said having the home meet provides some extra motivation with the home crowd and comfortable surroundings. Not that the team doesn’t normally get ready to perform how it should, but meets like Wednesday’s provide a bit more of a boost.

“We like the extra motivation during this meet,” Kellenberger said. “All of our family and friends are here and I feel like, I don’t know, that helps us get a little more pumped up and ready to go. It really makes it that much more fun performing in front of all of them.”

On a night where the seniors were honored beforehand, it was a sophomore duo that ended up making the biggest impact for the St. Charles co-op. Emma Grace Redmond-Mattucci (first place in all-around) and Grace Levita (second) also were a big rea-

son why the team had the fate it did in the dual.

Redmond-Matucci (36.250 all-around) took home first in the vault (9.2), uneven bars (9.2) and floor exercise (9.45), while Levita took first on the balance beam (8.6), and second in both the uneven bars (8.95) and floor exercise (9.25).

For Batavia, there was a great sense of optimism despite the team loss. Senior Megan McGee, who has gradually gained back confidence from a broken fibula last season, showed once again why she is a threat to make a run into the postseason.

Taking fifth overall, McGee made her biggest impact on the vault, soaring to a firstplace finish with a score of 9.2.

Though McGee’s team wasn’t on the winning side of the dual, she does see her team headed in the right direction at this point in the season.

That optimism includes her own performance.

“That’s what they tell me,” McGee said with a laugh when asked if she feels as good about her level of performance as she did before the injury.

“I’ve been working back to my normal skill level and I’m getting there quicker than I’m expecting. I definitely think

as a team we can improve ... there’s always room. But everyone seems to be getting better with each practice and that’s what you want to see.”

Wojdelko certainly knows there’s work to be done for her side – despite the win – but she undoubtedly wanted to make sure to let her girls enjoy their moment Wednesday night.

Former St. Charles East wrestler Keone Derain has noticed plenty of differences in moving from his high school days to his first year at Elmhurst College.

Derain said he’s already learned a lot in his freshman season with the Bluejays, but the differences between wrestling at the high school level and wrestling at the college level have stood out the most.

“A big thing for me was just the change in intensity,” he said. “In high school, you’re taught more skills, push the pace. But as soon as I got to college, I found out you don’t have to be a great wres-

tler to be good. The guys who can pick up the intensity and keep moving when they’re tired. That’s one of the things I noticed the most, not being afraid to get tired and scoring and taking advantage of your opportunities.

“It kind of opened my eyes.

I was like, ‘OK, this is what it’s like to wrestle at the next level.’”

While he’s still getting settled into the next level, Derain said a big advantage for him is the Elmhurst College coaches.

He gets a lot of advice and a lot of motivation both during practice and during matches.

“For me, my coaches, they work with me a lot, and they’re able to help me work high, on four-point moves and stuff, my offense, to help me get where I have to be and just turning up the intensity,” Derain said. “They tell me, ‘Keep moving, keep moving.

The general transition to college life has gone well for Derain, who lauded his increased independence, as most first-year college students do.

He said he was pleasantly surprised in both the academic and social realms, adding that the latter was made easier by the closeness of his teammates.

And that aspect of the transition was made even easier thanks to the presence of a couple more St. Charles natives on the team. Tim Noverini is a St. Charles North grad, and Alex Fritz went to Marmion. Derain talked about knowing Noverini from his high school days and that he continues to look up to Noverini, a junior.

Just at the start of his collegiate career, Derain is looking to keep improving as time goes on, saying that the stuff he’s learned is already starting to pay off on the mat.

“I wrestle a lot of tough kids, but right now, I’m just learning a lot and it’s really starting to pay off this time of year,” he said. “Right now I’m just looking to keep on getting better.

“I’m learning a lot of small things every day that’s starting to add up to the big picture.”

22 Research lacking on health

advantages of organic foods Dear Dr. K: Many of my friends buy only organic foods. But are they really healthier than non-organic?

Dear Reader: Organic crops are grown without most synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Organic animal products are free of antibiotics and hormones. Many people believe these foods are better for them. But we really don’t know they are.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture regulates the organic industry with strict standards. The soil where crops are grown must be inspected and shown to be free of most manmade pesticides and fertilizers. The crops cannot be genetically modified. Animals raised on organic farms receive no antibiotics or growth hormones. They are given feed that has been grown organically. And they are able to roam around outside. Processed organic foods cannot contain synthetic additives. Only foods that are 95 percent organic are certified with a “USDA Organic” seal.

There have been several studies comparing the nutritional content of organic and non-organic foods. They have found foods grown either way are quite similar in terms of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates.

According to the USDA, organic foods have fewer pesticide residues than conventionally grown foods. But the amounts of pesticide residues in non-organic food fall within the level for safe consumption.

Similarly, we don’t have enough information yet for a verdict on animal products. Does the lack of hormones and antibiotics in organic animal products make them healthier? We don’t know.

I spoke with registered dietitian Kathy McManus, director of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard-affiliated Brigham

If you do want to go organic, McManus suggests starting with produce. Try buying organic versions of foods on the “Dirty Dozen” list.

This annual list reveals which conventionally grown foods are most likely to contain pesticide residues. This year’s list includes apples, celery, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, nectarines, peaches, potatoes, snap peas, spinach, strawberries and sweet bell peppers. All of these should be washed before you consume them, even if they are organically grown.

Fruits and vegetables that typically do not appear on the Dirty Dozen list are those that have a thick skin that is removed before eating. By removing the skin or peel, you also remove most of the pesticide residue. As a result, it’s less important it be organic. Examples of the “Clean 15” include bananas, avocados, grapefruit and eggplant.

Why don’t we know if organic foods are healthier? Such a study would be very hard to conduct.

The research team would have to recruit thousands of people. Those people would be assigned at random to either eat organic foods or not. They would have to follow their assignment every day, for many years.

Then there’s the expense. Such a study would cost tens of millions of dollars. And, in my opinion, the U.S. government already is not providing sufficient funding for medical research.

Parents object to daughter’s correspondence with convict Dr. Wallace: My best friend’s brother has served six months in prison for armed robbery.

He was sentenced to four years, so he is in for another three and a half years. My friend told me he is very lonely. Since I also know him, she has asked me to write to him and I told her I would. I wrote to him, but then a friend of her brother’s, who also is in prison, wants to be a pen pal with me, too.

I told my parents about this and they said it is fine to correspond with my friend’s brother, but they won’t allow me to be a pen pal with this other guy. They think it is not a good idea for a 17-year-old girl to be writing to a stranger in prison.

Prisoners do enjoy receiving mail. Many churches encourage some adult members to be pen pals with inmates.

You should check your local church to see if they have such a group.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and basically a good kid. I get above-average grades and plan on attending college. Eventually, I want to study law and become an attorney.

I’m not a wild kid, but I’m also not a prude. I will never do drugs, but I’m tempted to try a small amount of alcohol. I know I would never get drunk, but there are times when I’m at a party and feel like a ninny when someone offers me a drink and I tell them, “Thanks, but I don’t drink.”

My folks are both social drinkers, but I’ve never seen either one of them drunk and I doubt I ever will. My mom takes a small amount of wine and my dad will drink a beer, but only on special occasions. I have never seen either of them even tipsy, and they never drink at home at all.

Nameless: I personally feel the world would be a much better place if it were void of alcohol. Some people can control how much they drink, but many cannot.

Don’t get caught up in peer pressure. You are not a ninny when you tell someone you don’t drink. In fact, it shows you have courage, independence and good sense.

Dr. Wallace: Our teacher told us students in Japan are much better at their studies than we are here in the U.S. Does this mean they are smarter than we are? And if they are smarter, why are they smarter? My parents think maybe it’s because of their diet. – Leha, Portland, Oregon Leha: Students in Japan,

have, on the whole, better study habits than our students, mainly because families in Japan place a greater emphasis on education.

Add to this the fact students in Japan spend about 60 more days a year in the classroom than our students do.

This doesn’t mean the Japanese students are “smarter,” but it does mean they spend more time studying and learning.

In this deal, South is in four spades.

West leads the club ace, and East correctly drops the queen to show the queen and jack. (It could not be a singleton queen here.) When West continues with a low club, East wins with his 10 and shifts to the heart nine.

How should South try to attain his goal of 10 tricks?

This deal features a secondary problem. If you were North, what would you respond after partner opens one spade, and West makes a takeout double?

Over West’s double, North might jump to four spades. This is a slight underbid, but it could keep the opponents out of the auction, and a slam is unlikely given West’s double. North’s alternative is to respond two no-trump, which shows at least game-invitational values with four or more trumps. Here, South would rebid four spades.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend, “Jimmy,” and I have been together for two years. After about four months, out of necessity we moved in together and it was great.

The Washington Post TOKYO – Just in time to make good on your New Year’s vow to get organized, Marie Kondo, the self-described “crazy tidying fanatic” who has sparked the world with her joy for decluttering, has a new book to help you clean up your act.

Kondo’s “Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up” will be published in the United States. A sequel to her international bestseller, “The Lif-Changing Magic of Tidying Up,” it offers a more detailed and in-depth course in her methodical program to get rid of things that don’t “spark joy.”

The new book includes illustrations of how to fold everything, including parkas, underwear and socks, as well as Marie Takahashi/The Washington Post pictures of perfectly organized A self-described “crazy tidying fanatic,” Marie Kondo has a new book drawers. Kondo is a celebrity in Japan – she regularly appears on television here, and her four books in Japanese have sold a total of 2.2 million copies. Her surname has become a verb – “I just kondoed my closet” – and when Time magazine named Kondo one of the 100 most influential people of 2015, actress Jamie Lee Curtis called her a “modern-day ‘Marie Poppins.’”

Kondo’s approach of keeping only what you need and organizing it in the most space-saving way seems perfectly tailored to tiny Japanese apartments. More surprising, even to Kondo, is her popularity in places such as America, where people typically have more space to spread out their belongings. (“The Life-Changing Magic” has sold more than 1.6 million copies in North America.)

“In America, people live in big houses, but they tend

to have too many things, and that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are happy,” Kondo said during an interview at her office in central Tokyo. (It is not kept according to the KonMari method – a dishcloth was hanging by the sink, a real nono.) “So that’s another reason I think my book translates.”

Also, the focus on clearing your head as well as your house has tapped into a global trend: mindfulness.

“I think one of the reasons it’s been so popular is because I talk not only about physical decluttering but also about decluttering your mind, too,” Kondo said, sitting ramrod-straight next to a bunch of pink flowers that matched her skirt. “My method of decluttering reveals what’s most important in your life. So it doesn’t matter whether you’re in Japan or overseas, this method shows clearly what’s important to you.”

Kondo, 31, has always been a neat freak. As a child, she would pore over her mother’s magazines, reading articles on tidying and organization, and, as a teenager, she read every book available in Japanese on the subject. She became so obsessed with decluttering, she said, that she had a nervous breakdown in high school.

That got her thinking about how to make tidying a happy process. By deciding what to keep rather than what to discard, Kondo said she can help people create a “bright and joyful future.”

Although she said she does not practice Shintoism, Kondo had a part-time job at a shrine while she was in high school, and her method incorporates Shinto ideas of order and personifying objects.

“For many people in Japan, it’s natural to think that things have souls and that you should show gratitude when you use them,” she said.

This method means you will have to declutter only once and then just maintain it, Kondo said, claiming a zero “rebound” rate.

Some of Kondo’s suggestions will make people who are already struggling to find a work-life balance sigh. Writing about infusing mealtimes with joy, Kondo notes a recent fad in Japan in which grated radish is molded into crazy animal shapes. Who has time for that?

But, Kondo said, such efforts are worth it. Decluttering once will save busy people time over the long run. Kondo estimates that she spends 20 minutes a day folding clothes – she doesn’t watch television while folding, but concentrates on the folding and talking to the clothes – and said this is when she has some quiet time to herself.

In response to questions she received after publishing “The Life-Changing Magic,” Kondo said that items that are necessary but not necessarily joyful – such as funeral clothes and those screwdrivers – should be “showered with praise” and recognized for the way they make life simpler. In her home, Kondo removes the labels from her laundry detergent and

themselves of their husbands.

These are the basic principles of the KonMari method: First, dump everything you own of a certain category – start with clothes, then move to books, etc. – onto the floor to force a decluttering “shock.”

Then go through them, deciding whether each item “sparks joy.”

“When deciding, it’s important to touch it, and by that, I mean holding it firmly in both hands as if communing with it. Pay close attention to how your body responds when you do this,” she writes in the new book. “When something sparks joy, you should feel a little thrill, as if the cells in your body are slowly rising. When you hold something that doesn’t bring you joy, however, you will notice that your body feels heavier.”

Anything that doesn’t meet this bar gets chucked.

Then, decide where to store each item you are keeping and always put it back in its place.

Kondo has a way to fold everything – down to plastic shopping bags – so that each item can stand upright, saving space and making everything visible.

(But be careful not to squeeze your underwear in too tight or they won’t be able to breathe.)

6 Realtor group collecting for Hug A Soldier SHAW MEDIA The Realtor Association of the Fox Valley Community Outreach Committee has announced the fourth annual Valentine’s Day Hug A Soldier initiative.

After sending more than 1,000 valentines to deployed military soldiers in 2015, committee chairwoman Betty Rylko shared that “the impact [of] a little love sent overseas is worth the time spent making valentines and collecting conversation hearts,” a news release stated.

After connecting with a friend stationed in Iraq on Facebook, Rylko took to the Geneva-based real estate association to rally support beyond the holiday season in December, the release stated.

“We spend a lot of time during Christmas sending care packages and well wishes,” Rylko said in the release, “but what about the soldiers

The Realtor Association of the Fox Valley is accepting donations of candy hearts and valentines from individuals, schools, church groups and any other supporters of the U.S. armed forces. [who] do not celebrate during December?”

A call for valentine donations and boxes of conversation hearts went out the first week of January to the Realtor Association of the Fox Valley, and the Community Outreach Committee continues to look for supplies from anyone who loves a member of the military, ideally to double its efforts in 2016, the release stated.

The Realtor Association of the Fox Valley is accepting donations of candy hearts and valentines from individuals, schools, church groups and any other supporters of the U.S. armed forces.

After collecting donations, the Community Outreach Committee will host a packing party for members of the Realtor Association of the Fox Valley at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 25. Members of the association include area real estate agents, appraisers, lenders, attorneys and association staff.

The Washington Post In the recently published “Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up,” celebrity organizer Marie Kondo goes into minute detail about all of her decluttering directives.

The book is a follow-up to last year’s global sensation “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” Here, Kondo wrote of the many items keeping homes in a state of disarray, clogging everyday life and robbing one of joy. She struck a chord in a chaotic world, and her ideas became known as KonMari.

The first book initiated a flurry of questions from her

tidying disciples about how exactly to achieve minimalist joy.

The new book has detailed recipes for more joyful living through her KonMari method, with a little bit of feng shui thrown in. She shows how to fold underwear and how to thank items for their service as you shove them into a garbage bag. She said that sorting through her family’s photos was one of the hardest things she has ever done.

Her space-saving approach appeals most to urban dwellers living in tiny apartments.

American families living in the suburbs in a four-bedroom house with a two-car garage (or any family with a crowded attic, basement or storage

unit) might have a harder time achieving Kondo’s goal of “once-in-a-lifetime special event of tidying-up.” Ditto anyone who shops in bulk at Costco.

With ultimate respect for Kondo’s goal of beauty, simplicity and perfect closets, here are a few concepts I just can’t get behind: • Cut photographs out of coffee table books. Kondo said that if you only like certain photographs in a beautiful book, it’s OK to snip them out and put them in a clear plastic folder. (Many of us were taught never to cut up a book.) I’m left to assume that I should then toss the mangled book. Hopefully, after looking at the photos at a later time, she writes, you

will wonder why on earth you saved them and will eventually toss them, leaving you with no trace of that darned book.

• Cover the eyes of your

stuffed-animal friends when relegating them to the trash.

Some may be hesitant to part with their tubs of Beanie Babies or the teddy bears that once sat in a baby’s nursery.

But blindfolding each animal before tossing? “Once their eyes are hidden, stuffed toys and dolls look much more like objects, and that makes it far easier to part with them,” Kondo said.

• Obsess over bathroom storage. She admits that keeping the bathroom and all of its accessories tidy is very challenging. Kondo hates

tacky labels on things such as deodorizing sprays and toilet cleansers (“loud and ugly,” she writes) and suggests you try to remove them. Good luck with that. I agree that storing toilet paper rolls in a basket or box is a nice idea, but covering them in a cloth is going a bit far.

• Spend joyful hours wearing vintage school uniforms. Kondo said that if you are really attached to your school uniform, you should put it on and wallow in the sweet memories of your youth. Then you can hold onto the memories but let the plaid skirt and blazer get stuffed into the donation bag. Meanwhile, there’s one problem. Who can still fit into their clothes from high school?
