Rewarded with knowledge Genealogy searchers find family connections can provide perspective

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com When Geneva School District 304 voters chose candidate Matt Henry for the school board in 2009, it’s possible that none of them thought there was anything special about his last name.

But there is something special: Matt Henry is a direct descendant – 12 generations removed – of patriot Patrick Henry, whose “liberty or death” speech March 23, 1775 at the Second Virginia Convention urged the colonists to raise a militia against the British.

He said the research started with his great-uncle, who studied the Henry family genealogy starting in 1761 – when John Henry I, cousin to Patrick Henry – was born in Virginia.

“More than anything else, it gives you a real sense of belonging,” Henry said, of knowing his family’s genealogy. “It’s really like a history lesson.”

Tracing one’s genealogy is, in fact, a history lesson, said Susan Lye, president of the Kane County Genealogical Society. The group, which serves the entire county, has been helping people in their searches for 38 years.

“It puts you in an understanding of worldwide historical events,” Lye said. “When you study your family history, you not only learn about an individual, you learn about the history of the time, the law, the religion, the culture, what was happening, the current events.

You can put structure around why the family did what they did.”

Many people search genealogy for medical history, looking for predispositions to diseases or conditions, Lye said. But either way, the information gleaned provides a well-rounded view of the world, Lye said.

“You can relate to world events and world cultures and get a better understanding of how the world works,” she said.

••• Betsy Jagiello of Geneva said she has been to Ireland twice seeking her heritage.

“It was kind of nice to go and see where the family comes from and do a little genealogy, see what our roots are,” Jagiello said. “We got records back to the 1520s on my father’s side.

Through doing that, I met cousins in Ireland that I talk to all the time.”

Her father’s people came to the U.S. in the 1880s.

“We had very little history

on my mother’s side,” she said.

“We did not know anything about her ancestors.”

Jagiello teamed up with her sister who began researching through the Daughters of the American Revolution in Georgia, where she had moved.

PrintLab helps Water Street Studio expand access to region

CHARLES – Kim Fredricks squeegeed a blast of bright blue ink across a silk screen, demonstrating how to pull a print that announced – appropriately – Water Street Studios PrintLab. For the uninitiated, it was like magic that a sweep of color on one side could produce a perfect print on the other.

Next up was St. Charles 2nd Ward Alderman Rita Payleitner, followed by Athena Hanson, also of St. Charles.

“I thought it was awesome,” Payleitner said. “I was surprised by how easy it is. I’m excited about bringing arts to the city and the city to the arts. We’re very excited about them being here.”

An oil pastel artist herself, Hanson was thrilled at the hands-on experience available Saturday at the new Water Street Studios PrintLab, 117 W. Main St., St. Charles.

Though it has been open for several months, the recent addition of a sign pointing the way down the stairs to a below-level space was cause for a celebration and ribbon cutting, as about 20 people attended, mingled and got to see some print work.

“I love it,” Hanson said.

“It’s neat. I’m definitely coming back and with my kids as well.”

Director of Development Jim Kirkhoff and a founding member of Water Street Studios, said it was part of the mission to grow as an arts organization to help the region.

“What PrintLab is, is a facility for children’s classes, as well as fine art printmaking,” Kirkhoff said. “But another really neat element of what it is, is a shared studio for artists who work in printing. ...

We’re really glad to be here.”

What PrintLab will provide for printmakers, Kirk-

hoff said, is access to expensive equipment that they can use for a monthly or annual membership fee.

Although Water Street Studios is based in Batavia, its mission is to develop the promotion of fine arts in neighboring communities, said Jill Kramer, general manager of

Water Street Studios.

“The PrintLab is important because it’s one of the only printmaking facilities outside of a university in the western suburbs of Chicago,” Kramer said. “It’s a facility that allows artists that are interested in pursuing that practice to come here and learn new techniques, continue with the techniques that they are already familiar with and are working with, without having to make a large investment in studio space [or] equipment.”

Kramer said printmaking in general is a democratic practice of art, usually done in groups, so having a central location like this brings people together.

“Printmaking is a process-oriented practice,” Kramer said. “Where in painting, you are putting an image on the final canvass.

Printmaking is – whether it is color-separating, cutting multiple blocks, etching multiple plates – printing is multi-process. Traditionally printmaking has been used for everything from social revolutions to rock-and-roll posters.”

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva Public Library Director Matt Teske is expected to resign this week, then be appointed as assistant director. A just-appointed part-time director would be named as interim director, officials said.

Teske’s resignation will signal the beginning of a search for a new library director, board President Esther Steel said.

Teske did not return a voice mail message seeking comment.

According to the agenda of a special meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, at 127 James St., Geneva, the board also will announce the retirement of its assistant director Peggy Carlson, effective on June 27.

Steel first had said the

library would make an announcement about the library’s leadership by noon Monday, then by 3 p.m. Steel said the agenda for the special meeting, which was received shortly after 5 p.m., would serve as the announcement.

“Lots of libraries run with two assistant directors,” Steel said. “It’s not a bad thing.”

Teske recently came under fire by board member Susan Shivers, who objected to having to hire Boria if the library already were paying a director. Shivers questioned the idea of appointing

Teske as an assistant library director.

“We already have an assistant director,” Shivers said. “We never needed two assistant directors before.”

Teske’s resignation letter still is being written, but it would be available to the board members on Wednesday, Steel said.

Asked whether Teske’s director salary of $110,233 would be reduced if the board agrees to have him be an assistant director, Steel said that would have to be determined at the special meeting.

Last week, the board agreed to hire Boria, a retired library director, as a part-time consultant for 15 hours a week at $60. Steel said as an interim library director, she would continue at those hours unless she told the board more were needed.

“We had the same greatgreat-great-grandfather on his dad’s side, his paternal grandmother’s side. He sent me photographs from a vacation in Florida, and it was so strange to see familiar faces on strange people.”

Jagiello said she likes knowing the family’s story.

“It’s your place in history, where your roots came from,” Jagiello said. “I had ancestors who traveled over on the boats. It makes you feel you are from good, strong stock.

Geneva library officials to consider later Sunday hours

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva Public Library officials will be considering a possible change in the hours it is open, depending on what the public wants, officials said.

The issue is on the agenda for the board’s meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at 127 James St., Geneva.

Board member Pat Lord asked for the item to be up for discussion based on what the Naperville Public Library recently did, which is to stay open from 1 to 9 p.m.

That library did a threemonth pilot program last year to see whether extended hours were necessary and whether that is what patrons wanted, Lord said.

“On weekends, when most people who work are most likely to have time to get to the library, the access to the library is the most restrictive,” Lord said in an email. “We’re open eight hours on Saturday, 9 a.m.

to 5 p.m. and four hours on Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. And anyone with children knows that often the weekends are taken up with getting them to various activities, practices and games.”

The cost with having the library open on Sunday is $375 an hour, according to staff calculations, Lord said. Although Lord said she was not proposing that the library change its Sunday hours, she said officials should look into it.

“It jumps out at me so clearly, the hours on the weekend are just too limited,” Lord said. “There are probably a lot of people who feel that way but we need to do a survey. We need to do input. We should explore what we should be doing.”

The library’s traditional 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. hours during the week affects people who work, she said, because they cannot come to the library until later.

“There are endless activities the kids are involved with and weekends

are frequently the time to do that,” Lord said. “Our hours are competing directly with those activities. To the extent we can make [the library] more accessible to people – that is the whole point.”

The Naperville Library District is larger than Geneva’s, Lord said, so they were able to change the Sunday hours without adding cost.

“If we could stay open … maybe we would be able to do it without costing additional money,” Lord said. “I sincerely think Naperville is on the right track with Sunday. A lot of students would use it on Sunday. Based on my experience, we need to do the research.”

Board president Esther Steel said officials have been considering extending hours on some days for a while now.

“This will be a discussion on what our neighbors may be doing and what we may or may not want to do,” Steel said. “It will be a very open-ended discussion.”

St. Charles signs on as RiverFest title sponsor

Even though the annual three-day event doesn’t start until June 6, they’re already locking down sponsorships and planning activities.

With the City Council’s approval last week, the city of St. Charles again will be the festival’s title sponsor.

In return, the city will get a benefit package that includes recognition on the festival program, a free boat entry in the dragon boat races and 100 passes to the sponsorship tent, according to city documents.

“We are glad to support this family-friendly festival that showcases our city and celebrates the wonderful amenity we have in the Fox River,” City Administrator Mark Koenen said in a written statement.

To commemorate 20 years of sand sculptures at RiverFest, organizers want to produce a set of note cards featuring the past 19 sand sculptures, Farris said. Community members are asked to share their photos with Pride of the Fox, she said.

Proposed Batavia restaurant requests financial assistance

Gaetano Di Benedetto, who owns Gaetano’s in Forest Park, wants to open a second, smaller version of the

restaurant at 15 E. Wilson St., Batavia, which formerly housed The Rhino Room.

The Di Benedettos are requesting financial support from the city in the form of a tax increment financing district grant and a low-interest loan.

According to a memo from Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston, it will cost more than $220,000 to convert the building into a full-service

restaurant, including kitchen equipment purchase and installation, interior decorating and the installation of a fire suppression system.

A proposed redevelopment agreement calls for the Di Benedettos to receive a $25,000 TIF grant from the city along with a $75,000, 60-month loan. The loan will carry an annual interest rate of 2.75 percent.

Plans are for the restaurant to open March 1.

Born Feb. 11, 1919, in Geneva, the daughter of Seth and Rena (Meredith) Peck, Marion married Oscar Behling on Feb. 11, 1956.

A Geneva High School graduate, Marion was a lifelong farmer who loved flower gardening and animals, especially raising her Merino sheep and Guernsey cows. She was a member of Kane County Farm Bureau and the American Guernsey Association.

She also enjoyed playing bingo and watching game shows.

Grading the details of Obama’s NSA speech THE WASHINGTON POST Since last spring, the country has engaged in a sharp and sometimes overheated debate about the National Security Agency. Last week, President Barack Obama took a step back and offered a usefully balanced view. He also proposed some reforms, most of which pointed in the right direction, but some of which were less useful because they were vague.

NSA analysts have “an extraordinarily difficult job, one in which actions are second-guessed, success is unreported and failure can be catastrophic,” he said.

They “know that if another 9/11 or massive cyberattack occurs, they will be asked,

by Congress and the media, why they failed to connect the dots.”

They have been doing this job without any known abuse of power. None of this is news, but it was valuable – to the country and undoubtedly to the people who do this work – to hear the president say so.

Obama also rightly paid respect to both sides of the debate. Those who defend the status quo “are not dismissive of civil liberties,” he said. By the same token, “those who are troubled by our existing programs are not interested in repeating the tragedy of 9/11.” Again not groundbreaking, perhaps, but important for the president to say.

Americans send sensitive personal information over electronic media every day that computers can easily gather and crank through.

This is not the world in which foreign intelligence policy was established in the 1970s, nor even when lawmakers reviewed it in the past decade.

People will naturally feel uneasy about what government can quickly learn about them and will demand limits.

“The challenge is getting the details right, and that’s not simple,” the president said.

That much is apparent from the reforms the president proposed, which attempt to strike a better balance between these competing equities, but which lack crit-

ical specifics. Obama said he favors new rules restricting the collection, warehousing and use of Americans’ communications picked up under surveillance authorities that are supposed to be aimed abroad. But he punted the formulation of those rules to the director of national intelligence and the attorney general.

Obama endorsed eliminating the government’s bulk collection of phone records while preserving its capability to learn from those records, but he didn’t map out how that will work. He asked lawmakers to create a panel of attorneys who could argue “significant” cases independently of the government before the secretive Foreign

Intelligence Surveillance Act court, but he didn’t explain who would decide which cases were “significant.”

Missing entirely was any reference to needed reforms to cordon off Americans’ data stored on cloud services such as email and online word processors, to which badly outdated federal law fails to afford common protections.

Also missing was a discussion of how much the NSA should be meddling with Internet encryption standards, about which U.S. tech companies care deeply.

The president struck a productive tone on Friday.

But it will take a lot more time, it seems, to engage in the unsimple task of filling in the details.

ST. CHARLES – Brides-to-be gathered in the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center on Sunday to get ideas and meet vendors for their big day.

A total of 12 vendors were on hand to display their services, which included food, DJs, photography, jewelry, flowers and more.

The expo brought in 45 separate families on Sunday, up from 19 during its first event in 2013, said Tricia Claypool, the center’s wedding and event coordinator.

Claypool attributed the growth in attendees to the inclusion of the expo in the latest St. Charles Park District winter brochure and also mentions of the event in local media.

The center did not really start promoting itself as a wedding venue until 2012, and then an expo site until 2013, Claypool said. The center can host a variety of events, including wedding ceremonies, with seating for 125 people in the main exhibit hall.

There also are the conference-style Twin Leaf rooms east and west, which together can hold about 160 people.

“After several of the events that we had, we then decided that we

needed to have the expo to draw attention to the venue and also local businesses,” Claypool said.

Chris Bethel of St. Charles is considering Hickory Knolls as the rehearsal wedding dinner site for her son, who is marrying Bridget Orkfritz of Elgin. Bethel came to the Sunday expo with her daughter, Lindsay Hutchins, and Orkfritz to also look into a caterer for the dinner.

Orkfritz said she hasn’t done too much wedding planning yet, so she enjoyed visiting with the vendors.

She is leaning toward having a photo booth after meeting with Tiffany Kufer of Wheaton-based Best Booth Plus.

Other vendors included Sue Peterson Designs Unlimited, which returned for a second straight year at the expo. Owner Sue Peterson handed out sample bouquets for the guests and answered questions about color trends and average prices for flowers.

Wedding budgeting is one thing that newly engaged Missy Sulita of Naperville is learning. She completed her first expo visit at Hickory Knolls on Sunday with her friend, Kelly Olen of Aurora.

“Some places can be very crowded and large,” Olen said of other expos. “The amount of vendors here is the right size.”

Applications sought for Citizens Police Academy in STC

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is seeking applications for its annual Citizens Police Academy, and this year, participants will learn even more.

The academy – which will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from March 18 to May 15 – is a week longer this year because of feedback from past participants, Officer Bill Tynan said.

“We’ll try it this year and see how it goes,” he said.

The Citizens Police Academy aims to give the public a better understanding of how the St. Charles Police Department operates.

Participants will learn about such topics as criminal and narcotics investigations; arrest and search procedures; traffic stops; and the K-9 unit.

Hands-on activities include a night on evidence collection – participants should be able to dust for fingerprints, for example – and trying out a handheld speed gun, Tynan said.

Instructors include a

judge, an assistant state’s attorney and police officers, he said.

“Typically, the officers that teach a class don’t get to meet with citizens face-to-face in an environment that isn’t surrounded by some sort of law enforcement activity,” Tynan said.

The academy is open and free to St. Charles residents, approved St. Charles high school juniors and seniors, and St. Charles business owners and their employees.

Classes will be from 7 to 9 p.m., and most will be in the police department training room.

A graduation ceremony, which includes congratulations from the police chief and mayor, is planned for the last class.

Applications are available in the St. Charles Police Department front lobby, 211 N. Riverside Ave., St. Charles, and at www.stcharlesil.gov under “Crime Prevention.”

The deadline is March 4.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Batavia lost its sixth girls basketball game of the season Monday, ultimately struggling to match Joliet Catholic’s athleticism in a McDonald’s Shootout matinee.

The Bulldogs absorbed loss No. 6 of the 2012-13 season in late December, so in some respects, players could feel at peace about falling, 63-55, to the unbeaten Angels.

Still leading the race to unseat rival Geneva as Upstate Eight Conference River Division champions, Batavia (14-6) hung around against the Class 3A state contender. Ideally, the Bulldogs will channel the experience when the Class 4A postseason begins next month.

“We’ve got to dig deep and try to pull one out here,” Bulldogs senior guard Liza Fruendt said. “All of our what, six losses, have been really competitive every time. So I think this will only help us in the end, and it’s going to help us in our conference play, mostly.”

Joliet Catholic (19-0) boasted a formidable reputation even during pregame introductions. The public address announcer hailed three underclassmen starters as “considered by many” to be among the nation’s top prospects at their respective grade levels.

One known commodity, 6-foot senior Jasmine Lumpkin, is headed to Michigan State.

The Bulldogs heard the accolades shortly after their own intro – Fruendt went as “Leeza” for the game’s early stages – but didn’t flinch. With Fruendt (Missouri State) and senior forward Erin Bayram (Boston University) also bound for NCAA Division-I schools, why should they?

With several college coaches looking on, Batavia sophomore forward Hannah Frazier struck for a career-high 25 points and added 15 rebounds.

Liza Fruendt, Batavia senior guard ed there was “still a lot of meat on the bone there,” lamenting not getting Frazier a few more touches as the Angels fronted the post.

“They were definitely really great athletes, all of them, and they have a lot of size,” Frazier said. “But I think with me and Erin – and a lot of our small girls play bigger than they are – and with Jensen preparing us all week, we were able to play physical.

And we weren’t intimidated.”

Ditto for the Angels. Like many in attendance, they had heard the buzz surrounding Fruendt’s 51-point outburst Friday night against Geneva.

“Oh yeah, I was aware she was a great player. So we just had to take her our of her rhythm a little bit with our pressure,” said Lumpkin, who guarded Fruendt most frequently.

Fruendt scored 17 of her 22 points after halftime, including Batavia’s first 13 of the third quarter.

“She got it going a little bit in the second half,” Jensen said. “She’s just one of those players … that is going to do her best to make sure we don’t lose a game.”

A Frazier basket with 4:20 remaining in the third quarter brought Batavia to within 43-

40, but the Bulldogs came no closer.

Batavia went scoreless for the first 2:56 of the fourth quarter. Sophomore Nicole Ekhomu (19 points) and Lumpkin (17) finished in double figures for Joliet Catholic, which outrebounded Batavia, 54-35, and matched the Bulldogs with 10 steals.

“Our defensive pressure really allowed us to get this win,” Lumpkin said.

The Bulldogs remained in their locker room for a few minutes after the coaches left.

They won’t see the Angels again until another possible shootout or nonconference game, but they won’t cast aside lessons from this meeting, either.

“In the beginning, everybody was just so focused and locked in. You could just tell we came ready to play,” Fruendt said. “I think as the game went on, we stayed that way even as we fell behind.”

with them really a full season since freshman year, so it’s awesome.”

Moving on Riding a four-game winning streak and having played consistently solid basketball throughout the season, losing Saturday’s rivalry showdown to St. Charles East by a 90-55 margin had to feel surreal for St. Charles North.

North coach Tom Poulin, though, is hopeful the sour night can be channeled constructively going forward.

“We will be better because of tonight, honestly – not just a typical coaching cliche,” Poulin said after the game.

“We saw what happens when

we don’t work defensively with everything you have.

Because it’s harder to play that zone than it is to play man-to-man. You’ve got to push yourself harder, and we didn’t do that. If we don’t do that, you can get embarrassed.”

The East matchup capped a five games in eight days stretch for North. Poulin declined to use that bustling period as an excuse for North’s play Saturday, but is hopeful the upcoming break – North doesn’t play again until Jan. 30 at Elgin – will be useful as the North Stars aim to sharpen their competitive edge, especially defensively.

St. Charles East and St. Charles North both boast high-end guard duos, with East featuring Dom Adduci and Cole Gentry and North riding Alec Goetz and Jake Ludwig.

While understanding it’s a team game, Gentry acknowledged the two backcourts going head-to-head provided extra motivation for Saturday’s crosstown rematch.

Ludwig and Goetz have deservedly drawn rave reviews for their play this season, with one statewide talent evaluator – Roy Schmidt of Illinois Prep Bulls-eye – recently tweeting his belief that Goetz and Ludwig are the most underrated backcourt combination in the state.

“Me and Dom all week, I’ve been sending Dom text messages of the tweets about them and stuff, just to keep in mind, we’ve got to be ready, and we’re good, too, we can play with them,” Gentry said. “I think [Saturday] we showed … they’re playing really well, give them credit, they’re both amazing players, but I think me and Dom are just as good. I don’t think there’s any reason why we can’t outplay them. I think we showed why we’re highly touted, too.”

Geneva guard Justin Durante is happy he’s playing well this season, but even moreso, he’s happy to be playing, period.

Durante, a senior guard, missed most of his sophomore and junior seasons after undergoing concussions. Quirkily enough, both concussions took place Nov. 30 – during a practice sophomore year and during a home game against Batavia as a junior. Last year’s concussion against Batavia ended his first season on varsity.

Durante considered making it through Friday’s home game against the rival Bulldogs healthy a landmark.

“This game is kind of like a stepping stone for me to get over, to get past this game without any injuries,” Durante said.

The Vikings consider Durante a hard-nosed, utility-style player who gives the team a little bit of everything, and plenty of grit. His willingness to play with what coach Phil Ralston termed “reckless abandon” heightens Durante’s risk of injury, but so far this season, his bad luck finally has subsided.

Durante has come off the bench and started at various points, and is part of a solid backcourt rotation with Chris Parrilli, Cam Cook and Pace Temple for the 14-4 Vikings.

“It’s a dream come true, finally, to play basketball, so far for a full season through,” Durante said. “I haven’t had any injuries. So it’s just been unbelievable to be out on the court, play with my teammates finally. I haven’t played

in 17 games, and that was tonight,” Poulin said. “We have to remember who we are. We’re a team that plays harder than the other team and a team that plays together moreso than our opponent, and that was not the case tonight.”

North swimmers find depth, balance St. Charles North toasted its boys swimming seniors with a banquet after Thursday’s narrow home victory against St. Charles East.

The night came complete with speeches, inside jokes and catered food, but before all that, there was a metaphor.

From poolside, North Stars coach Rob Rooney lauded the accelerated leadership of core seniors such as Ross Davis, Nick Ross Davis Traxler, Collin Bawolek and Nathan Bawolek and Tim Steele, who have helped the program’s transition more Rob Rooney smoothly than expected.

“It’s been a year of growth with this group of boys, and I think that they’ve been Noah Roberts looking to find their own identity, and I think [Thursday] helped develop that as we move toward the end of the year here,” Rooney said. “It’s always different every year when you lose a graduating class. This group has been great Indians, and now they’re learning how to be chiefs, in a sense, their senior year.”

North lost several stalwarts from last season’s eighth-place state finishers, a team that also won the Upstate Eight Conference and sectional titles.

While Rooney knew sophomore Stephan Hutchinson was a reliable commodity and sensed transfer sophomore Joe Myhre also had potential, he needed the upperclassmen to take the reins.

“They’re going to taper great. They’ve worked very hard,” Rooney said. “I’m extremely proud of how they reacted and how they did.”

Last season, there was an appreciable talent gulf between the senior class and the rest of the team. This season has produced a different atmosphere as the entire group seems to be progressing at the same level.

North hosts the Upstate Eight Conference meet and an IHSA sectional next month, which only figures to add to the North Stars’ budding comfort level.

“The team chemistry is building,” Hutchinson said, “and it’s more of a motivational, cheer feeling to the whole meet.”

Roberts South Dakota-bound: Aurora Christian senior two-way standout Noah Roberts on Monday committed to play his college football at South Dakota, an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision school.

Like many of his teammates, Roberts, a defensive back/wide receiver, missed time because of injury during his senior season, but was a key contributor to the Eagles’ successive Class 3A state championships in 2011 and 2012.

Located in Vermillion, S.D., South Dakota is nicknamed the Coyotes and finished 4-8 in 2013. The Coyotes are set to open the 2014 season on Aug. 30 at Oregon.

STC East hits high gear, routs North

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles North boys basketball coach Tom Poulin can’t recall an opponent ever raining 16 3-pointers on his team, nor can he recollect 90 points being hung on his North Stars in regulation.

But Poulin has a theory on why that dubious trivia surfaced Saturday, after St. Charles East embarrassed the visiting North Stars, 90-55.

North showed up to play a game. East laced ’em up with much more in mind.

“We came and played St. Charles East,” Poulin said.

“And they came to kick our butts.

“They came to send a message and blow us out and get some payback and things like that. They came to win and compete with everything they have, and we showed up to play the game.”

East entered the season boasting a deep reservoir of perimeter snipers. On Saturday, all that promise was delivered upon in astounding fashion as East canned eight 3-pointers in each half, rolling off the fingertips of six different shooters.

Saints coach Pat Woods perhaps stated the obvious in calling East’s performance one of the best he’s seen in his three years on the job.

“That’s what people don’t realize, we have so many kids that can shoot the ball,” Woods

said. “And the way I play, I give them the green light.

They had their confidence going, and shots were falling.”

East senior guard Dom Adduci, coming off a 40-point bonanza last time out against Elgin, hadn’t cooled off much, scoring 18 points in the first half, including a 25-foot-plus strike to give East a 20-5 lead late in the first quarter.

It was a walk-on-water night for the Saints in just about every way imaginable, including buzzer-beating 3-pointers by Manibog for a 50-22 halftime lead and from Cole Gentry for a staggering 68-33 advantage to close the third quarter.

Gentry didn’t feel himself when the teams met the first time at North, a 68-58 North Stars victory in December.

At the time, Gentry was still bothered by back trouble that dogged him during the offseason, but Saturday, he was the difference-maker the Saints expect, splitting double teams with regularity and accounting for nine of East’s 23 assists to go with eight points.

“The key is to attack their wings and make them make a decision, and tonight everybody made the right decisions kicking it out, and we were just finding everybody and hitting shots,” Gentry said.

In addition to Gentry’s resurgence, East enjoyed a morale boost with the return of 6-foot-7 senior David Mason, who made his season debut off the bench after undergoing foot survey in November.

As much progress as the Saints made from Round 1 to Round 2 against the North Stars, Adduci recognized Saturday’s performance offers no guarantees if the teams were to meet for a third time in regionals, a realistic prospect.

“Basketball definitely has its ups and downs,” Adduci said. “Some nights you’ll be on, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world, and some nights you’ll just have a bad game.

We recognize that. We fight through the highs and the lows.

Credit to our team for battling through those tough losses we had early on and getting to where we are now.”

Adduci scored 23 points before sitting for the entire fourth quarter. Senior forward AJ Washington scored all 10 of his points in the first half while junior guard Jake Clodi scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of 3-pointers. East was 16 for 29 from 3-point territory on the night. Jake Asquini and Manibog made 3 of 4 from beyond the arc.

North’s heralded guard duo of Alec Goetz (17 points) and Jake Ludwig (12) paced the North Stars, but Poulin said his team was “stuck in mud” at both ends of the floor.

“We allowed the ball to get to the high post and the lane, which just collapses you, consistently, and we haven’t done that all year,” Poulin said.

Now East and North each have two conference losses.

Both teams have one game remaining with Larkin, the UEC River’s lone unbeaten team.

Gentry said treating the huge crowd Saturday to such a sizzling performance could pay dividends in the coming weeks for the Saints.

“It’s big just to keep generating the support so now when we play Larkin coming up or Geneva coming up, we still have that many people here, because we really feed off the crowd,” Gentry said.

Chris Pine is latest incarnation of ‘Jack Ryan’

By DANA BARBUTO More Content Now It’s hard to focus on anything but Chris Pine’s striking baby blues, but the “Star Trek” captain proves to be a serviceable action hero as the fourth incarnation of the late Tom Clancy’s famed CIA analyst Jack Ryan.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also stars as a Russian baddie, “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” looks great – especially in Imax – and has its share of exciting action scenes, but there’s not much going on below the surface.

Pine follows in the footsteps of Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck as Ryan, and this installment serves as his origin story. We first meet him as a student at the London School of Economics on day of the Sept. 11 attacks. Next, he’s a promising young lieutenant in the Marines, forced out by a near-death helicopter crash. After rehab, where he meets longtime flame Cathy (Keira Knight-

ley, with not much to do but adopting an American accent), Jack joins the CIA, working undercover as a compliance officer at a big-time Wall Street financial house. He soon uncovers a Russian terrorist plot to cripple the U.S. economy and blow up Wall Street.

The action shifts from New York to Moscow and back again, as Jack, aided in his quest by his wise old CIA boss played by a grumbly-voiced Kevin Costner, is charged with saving the world and his girlfriend from harm.

What transpires is stuff you’ve seen before in this franchise and others of its ilk. Veteran scribe David Koepp (“Angels and Demons”) and newcomer Adam Cozad are the first to write a Jack Ryan screenplay not based on a Clancy novel. That might be why their reboot lacks any depth whenever the gunfire, car chases and explosions subside. The characters, too, are all cookie-cutter: Costner’s the “mentor;” Knightley’s the “girl in peril;” there’s a few ill-fated thugs, a Russian terror-

ist (Alec Utgoff) and the icy Kremlin official (former ballet star Mikhail Baryshnikov).

It’s a credit, however, to Pine and Branagh for making the inferior material better than it should be. Pine, the kind of guy for whom tailored suits were invented, brings a lot of charisma to the role (“Like a Boy Scout on a field trip,” Costner’s character teases.)

Branagh (the actor) makes Russian oligarch Viktor Cheverin a formidable villain. Branagh (the director) moves the action along at a brisk pace (there’s a ticking bomb, after all!) delivering a taut film that isn’t afraid of its own shadow.

• “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and intense action and brief strong language. The cast includes Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, Kenneth Branagh and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Grade: B.

Vets deserve thanks even when it’s unwelcome The number of babies born Dear Abby: I just read the letter from “Twice Bitten in Washington,” who had thanked veterans for their service to our country and received several negative responses. I’m a retired vet, dying from Agent Orange poisoning. I served two tours in Vietnam, and when I returned from Nam, I was called a baby killer, spat upon and refused taxi service because I was in uniform.

America has had a change in attitude since the Vietnam War. Today, many folks appreciate what the military is doing. I have been thanked several times while wearing my Vietnam Veterans hat and it makes me feel great, to the point my eyes water.

Tell “Twice Bitten” to continue thanking the military vets. It means a lot, especially to vets like me. Sure beats being called a baby killer. – Vietnam Vet Dear Vietnam Vet: I received many letters like yours from Vietnam vets who were also not thanked for their service when they returned home. Dear Abby: I would like to offer “Twice” an explanation for the reaction she received. I served two tours in Iraq and lost some good friends. When vets return home from war, home is a scary place.

The life we lived and breathed is no longer. After spending so much time fearing the unknown and protecting ourselves physically and emotionally, we can’t stop.

Many of us came home feeling guilty that we lived while others died – ashamed that we might not have done enough, that we should have been the one who was laid to rest, that maybe if we had looked harder, fought harder, we wouldn’t have lost a soldier.

When I returned home, I reacted the way “Twice” described. I was resentful that someone would take the time to honor me, but not

the friends I lost. It was a long time before I realized that by honoring me with their sincere thanks, they were honoring every soldier we have ever lost. Now when I am thanked, I shake hands, I hug, and I thank them for their respect. – Brandon In Indiana Dear Abby: As a soon-to-be-retired career Army officer, I am one of those who feel awkward when people thank us for doing our jobs.

The Army was a career I chose, knowing the hardships and what would be asked of me. Exercise is the best feel-good step you can take Dear Doctor K: When I’m tired, the last thing I want to do is exercise. But my wife says that exercising will actually boost my energy. Is she right?

Dear Reader: Listen to your wife. It may sound strange, but in order to get more energy, you have to do the very thing you don’t feel you have enough energy to do – exercise.

There are at least four ways that regular exercise makes you feel more energetic.

For starters, when you exercise, more energy-producing mitochondria form in your muscle cells. Mitochrondria are the cellular powerhouses that convert glucose, fat and oxygen into the substance that cells use for energy. So, while exercise burns energy, it also enables muscle cells to produce more energy.

Any type of regular exercise also creates more tiny blood vessels. Those vessels bring more oxygen (and glucose and fat) to every one of your cells. Aerobic exercise, which makes you breathe deeply and increases your heart rate, gets the most oxygen circulating.

Exercise also affects levels of hormones and chemical mes-

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff sengers. When you work out, your body releases epinephrine and norepinephrine. In large amounts, these stress hormones cause the energy-draining fightor-flight response. But in the modest amounts induced by exercise, they make you feel energized.

Exercise also boosts levels of compounds called endorphins. These are the “feel-good” chemicals that lift your mood. An elevated mood in itself can be an energy booster.

Finally, regular aerobic exercise almost guarantees that you will sleep more soundly – and good sleep is essential for feeling refreshed. Exercise is the only proven way to increase the amount of time you spend in deep sleep, the type that particularly restores energy. The more deep sleep you get, the less likely you are to awaken in the middle of the night, and the more rested you’ll feel the next day.

So, it does sound paradoxical, but it’s true. Regular exercise can improve your energy even if you

don’t feel you have the energy to exercise. But be smart about it.

I’m an early riser. I feel a lot more like exercising when I wake up than I do at the end of the day. For many of my friends and patients, it’s just the opposite.

They’re late risers who have to be at work by 9 a.m., but don’t feel they’re really awake until later in the morning. (They don’t mention this observation to their boss.) They exercise at the end of the day.

But I hope you won’t think of exercise as a tedious routine.

Instead, look at exercise as a surefire energy enhancer you can tap into at will.

You’ve heard repeatedly in this column (and elsewhere) that regular exercise is good for your health. It lowers your risk of many serious diseases. But, frankly, most of us find it easier to take action to achieve some benefit now, not 30 years from now. Regular exercise will make you feel better now.

to teenagers has declined Dr. Wallace: Our health teacher said that, lately, the number of babies born to teenage mothers in the U.S. has been decreasing steadily. I find this hard to believe. I, personally, am aware of four classmates who are unmarried and gave birth to a baby.

Has there really been a decline of teen births lately and, if so, why? – Nameless, Dallas, Tex. Dear Nameless: The number of teenage girls giving birth has dropped 10 percent from 2009 to 2010, and the drop had been dropping significantly (by 45 percent) since 1991 for teens ages 15 to 19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From 1988 to 2008, the abortion rate among 15 to 19-year-olds fell by 59 percent as reported by the Guttmacher Institute.

The major reason why there is a marked decline in teen pregnancies is that teens today are less sexually active, believe it or not. From 1991 to 2011, the percentage of high school students who have had sex fell from 54 percent to 47 percent.

And, according to the CDC, of those teens who are sexually active, some 80 percent say they used contraception, and the consequences of unwanted pregnancies have declined.

The Department of Health and Human Services has found 31 different, but effective, sex education programs that produce positive results, and the Department has been promoting them.

However, the biggest single factor is that today’s teens are smart about sex and pregnancy. It’s very important that the percentage of childbirths to unwed teen mothers has been decreasing, but this

It’s still shocking that, according to the CDC, more than 300,000 teenage girls gave birth in 2012 with 80 percent of the pregnancies unintended.

Dr. Wallace: My name is Robert and I want to be called Robert. I applied for a part-time job at a paint company.

I like the job, and I like getting paid. But I don’t like being referred to as Bob. I put down Robert on my job application, but when I went for an interview with the owner, he said, “Hello, Bob,” I cringed, but I didn’t correct him for obvious reasons. When he introduced me to the other workers after I was hired, he introduced me as Bob. Now everybody calls me Bob. Should I tell the workers to call me Robert? I hope you say yes, because I’ll start as soon as you give the word.

I’ll run copies of your column and hand them out to my co-workers, including the owner. – Robert, El Paso, Tex. Dear Robert: There’s no need to make that much of an issue of it.

When someone addresses you as Bob, simply say, “Actually, I prefer Robert.” Your boss was just being friendly by using the shorter, more familiar form of your name.

In most deals, the exact order in which you play the tricks does not matter too much. Occasionally, though, you have to follow a specific sequence, or you can be defeated by accurate defense.

Which applies in today’s deal? South is in three no-trump after East opened one spade.

West leads the spade nine and East overtakes with his 10. What should declarer do?

Although East has only 11 high-card points, his hand is worth opening. He has length in the majors, an easy two-heart rebid, and if he finds a fit with his partner, his hand has only seven losers (two spades, two hearts, one diamond and two clubs), which is the normal number for a minimum opening bid with a five-card suit.

South starts with only six top tricks: two spades and four clubs.

He might be able to get three more tricks from diamonds, but if he has to lose two diamond tricks, East will establish and run his spade suit to defeat the contract.

Instead, South should impale East on the tines of Morton’s Fork. Since East is marked with the missing aces, declarer should play a club to dummy’s jack, then lead the diamond nine.

If East wins with his ace, South takes two spades, four diamonds and four clubs for an overtrick. Or if East ducks his ace, declarer wins with his queen and leads the heart king from his hand to collect two spades, two hearts, one diamond and four clubs.
