Having already planned our 2015 year of events and functions, we are in full swing working out the details of events for our chamber members.

This is a great networking event for our members.

At the end of February, we are looking forward to a combined effort from the chamber and the Young Professional Council (YPC) to host a fun way to cure cabin fever – the Bowling Bonanza.

Bowling, food, networking and fun will be at the second-year event. If you are interested in the YPC, this is a great event to attend, learn more and get involved.

Looking ahead to a hopefully warmer time, we have our second Business-to-Consumer Expo planned for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The WBC’s business luncheons are at various chamber restaurants, and the speakers are wonderful, informational resources,

including some that are local chamber members. This month, Cheryl Denz, president and owner of Riverview Counseling Services in St. Charles, will be speaking at Issaco Kitchen about “New Year’s Resolutions: Wellness, Balance, and Positive Mind.” This presentation will focus on the mindbody-spirit connection and how we can make wellness, balance and calmness our reality for 2015.

‘It’s so bright and inviting’ First Baptist Church of Geneva adds space for youth, special needs programs

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com GENEVA – First Baptist Church of Geneva on Sunday invited the public to take in its new space for youth programming and children with special needs.

Several couples and families walked through the two-level, 12,000-square-foot addition during a Sunday open house at the church’s west campus, 3435 Keslinger Road, Geneva.

The space, which first was open for Sunday services on Jan. 11, features a renovated children’s area, seven multipurpose rooms, a large dividable cornerstone room used by the junior high ministry, and two state-of-the-art rooms for children with special needs, said John Harper, the church’s director of facilities and information technology.

The west campus addition is part of the church’s larger expansion project called Growing to Serve. The addition will better allow the church to serve special needs families through two programs, Buddy Break and Masterpiece Ministries, Harper said.

Masterpiece Ministries serves special needs children during the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service at the church’s west campus, and assistance also is available by request during the 10:45 a.m. service, said Jaimie Valentini, the church’s special needs coordinator.

Buddy Break is a free respite program held about once a month in which the church cares for special-needs children and their siblings for three hours while their families and caregivers get some downtime.

The church started offering the national program about a year ago, and interest in it continues to grow. The church served 42 children during its most recent Buddy Break, Valentini said.

The Marinos have been members of the church since 2010 because it offers programming for children with special needs.

“It’s really blessed us just to watch [the church programming] grow,” Marino said.

The special needs rooms, one for ages 8 and younger and the other for ages 9 and older, also include a quiet room and a ball pit. The 9-and-up room

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Whether the issue was annexing nearly 200 acres of Peck Farm Park, or working on zoning amendments or historic preservation, Geneva Community Development Director Dick Untch was part of all of it in the city.

After nearly two decades as Geneva’s city planner, Untch, 65, retired last week.

He attended his final city meeting last week before clearing out his office Friday.

“I can’t believe it’s 17 years,” Untch told aldermen at the meeting. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ... I appreciate your open-mindedness, sense of equity and fair play in dealing with controversial issues that came up.”

He previously was a planning assistant at West Chicago and a planning and zoning official with the Winnebago County Regional Planning and Economic Development Department.

When his career began, Untch said planners met in back rooms without benefit of public input.

The process evolved into the public give-and-take that now is the hallmark of modern planning, he said.

“In the role that the community development director plays, there’s no way someone in my position can make things happen by themselves,” Untch said. “This is about good science. It’s about being able to collect data, analyze data, structure viable alternatives, plans and policy formation. So it’s about putting it all together. But you do that through a process of engagement, outreach, collaboration.”

velopment director helps to guide city council policy on growth and development – whether for the downtown or the overall comprehensive plan for the city, housing or bikeways, Untch said.

“I’m really proud of the plans that have been adopted by the City Council on my watch,” Untch said. “Because they were all the outgrowth of that type of planning, where you have many shifts in direction, many people are engaged. The planning processes ... by their nature, they tend to be very democratic. In that, the process is messy.”

Untch said he adapted to the public way planning discussions occurred.

“People have different ideas. They have contrasting opinions to the work that I’ve done on these plans, these communitywide plans,” Untch said.

And that is understandable, he said.

“We are adjusting property rights. We are telling people what ought to happen on their piece of ground in terms of development and construction in a way that helps make the city overall better,” Untch said. “So, it’s about balancing individual property rights and the common good. I’m really proud of that body of work.”

One example is a twoyear master plan developed for Geneva’s downtown, in which residents were invited to participate both in person and using online tools.

Untch was a part of many projects, including teardown-infill zoning regulations in the historic district so new houses fit in older neighborhoods, and development of the Geneva Business Park, Geneva Commons, Dodson Place, the corridor

design guidelines for the East State Street and a bikeway plan.

Untch, a Naperville resident, said he and his wife are looking forward to traveling and spending time with their five grandchildren.

Aldermen acknowledged Untch’s work.

“There are many people who can talk a lot, but few who can talk a lot and be worth listening to,” 1st Ward Alderman Mike Bruno said at a meeting. “The city is immeasurably better for your participation.”

Fifth Ward Alderman Craig Maladra said Untch handled controversial issues by not treating any one stakeholder as more important than another.

“You guided us from extremes of emotion to some … rationality,” Maladra said.

City planner David DeGroot, who has been with Geneva for six years, stepped into the community development director role Monday, officials said.

“His passion for the work that we do is what I will miss the most,” DeGroot wrote in

an email.

DeGroot wrote that the city has many planning and development issues in the coming year, including updates to the downtown zoning regulations and the historic preservation ordinance, continued implementation of the Downtown Station-Area Master Plan and implementation of the recently adopted Homes for A Changing Region Plan, DeGroot wrote.

“Dick embodied professionalism every day and has left rather large shoes for me to fill,” DeGroot wrote.

Jones also is a motorcycle enthusiast, owning both a Harley and BMW. “When you’re out riding more, that increases the chances that something will happen,” Jones said. “But if you ride a bike, you accept the risks – the inherent risks – in it. I don’t want to say it doesn’t matter to you, but you accept that.”

Milwaukee resident Steve Johnson still was recovering from an Aug. 1 motorcycle crash. He sat in a wheelchair with his left leg elevated, showing the criss-cross patchwork of 19 surgeries – so far.

Johnson said he drove to the show, and it was the first time he was able to operate a car since the crash. He was there to promote an organization called Biker Down. He said the organization helped him when he came home from a hospital stay, and now Johnson said he wants to start a chapter to cover southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

“We help a biker after they’ve gone down,” Johnson said. “Everything from coming and letting them what’s going to happen next to providing durable medical equipment that they can use when they get out of the hospital.”

ST. CHARLES – Jerry Martin – aka “Olde Skool,” according to a patch on his leather vest – perused a veritable ocean of motorcycle parts Saturday at the 31st annual Chicago Motorcycle Show at Pheasant Run in St. Charles.

Vendors displayed everything from handlebars and backrests to wheels and hubcaps and fuel tanks painted with everything from flames to skulls to howling wolves to scantily clad women.

And that was not counting leather biker-wear jackets and vests, patches, shirts, jewelry and bandanas, many items featuring skulls, skeletons, parts of skeletons and lots of bling.

Martin, 57, of Elgin, said he has been riding motorcycles since he was 15 years old.

“I’m here to shop for motorcycle parts,” Martin said.

“I have a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. I’m looking for a backrest.”

Martin’s foster brother, Chris Blake, 34, also known as “Ghost,” said he loved riding motorcycles and was in the market for a bike.

“It’s just the freedom of

getting out and being on the open road,” Blake said. “Being by ourselves, nobody else around.”

Both said they wear helmets when they ride.

Jill Stamate, 37, of Crown Point, Indiana, said it was her first time coming to the motorcycle show.

“I’m a big Harley fan, and so is my boyfriend,” Stamate said. “We decided to check it out and see what they’ve got to offer. ... Lots of vendors … parts, accessories, all kinds of stuff to look at. I’m pretty happy.”

Westchester resident Chris Grames sat astride a Harley accented with leather and skulls. Grames said he paints and creates accents for bikes.

“Flame work is pretty popular with Harley-Davidson, but he [the bike’s owner] wanted a pirate theme,” Grames said. “It was blue, and I painted it black and added the leather and pirates.”

Also drawn to the motorcycle show was Geoffrey Jones of LawTigers, an association of motorcycle injury lawyers “We help motorcycle accident victims get a good settlement,” Jones said. “It covers the property damage to the machine, the motorcycle and also bodily, physical injury.”

Enthusiasts pack Pheasant Run for motorcycle show

Campton candidates sue to get on April 7 ballot CAMPTON HILLS – Four Campton Hills candidates are suing Kane County Clerk Jack Cunningham in an attempt to be placed on the April 7 consolidated election ballot.

Trustee Harry Blecker, a candidate for village president, and three trustee hopefuls – incumbents Susan George and Laura Andersen and newcomer Michael O’Dwyer – filed court papers Friday, asking a judge to order Cunningham to put their names on the ballot. The lawsuit states Cunningham has a “statutory duty” to put their names on the ballot.

Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Lulves, the office’s civil division chief, wrote in a Jan. 9 letter that the certification for the candidates was not filed in time, meaning their names would not be printed on the primary ballot.

A hearing is scheduled before Kane County Judge David Akemann at 1:30 p.m.

Monday at the Kane County Courthouse on Third Street in Geneva. Because the offic-

es they seek are uncontested, no primary election is necessary, and their names should be on the April ballot, according to the lawsuit.

Interim Campton Hills Village Clerk John Strauss filed the candidates’ certification and the statements of intent for two write-in candidates on Jan. 5. Lulves wrote that both the certification and statements of intent were required to be filed by Dec. 18.

“Both documents are untimely filed and will be given no effect,” and no ballot would be prepared, according to Lulves’ letter.

Lulves cited the Illinois election and municipal codes, which address this type of delay: “An election authority has no duty to conduct a primary election or prepare a primary ballot unless a statement meeting the requirements of this paragraph is filed in a timely manner.”

Two write-in candidates, Steven Galloway for trustee and Nicholas Girka for clerk, have until Feb. 5 to file a notarized declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate, according to Lulves’ letter.

According to the candidates’ lawsuit, “local election officials everywhere could keep candidates from the ballot by simply refusing to certify them by the deadline. Candidates would be left with no remedy. ... It would be impossible for candidates to even sue their local election officials to force timely compliance with the statute.”

Village President Patsy Smith had objected to the nominating papers of Blecker, Andersen, George and O’Dwyer. An Electoral Board dismissed the objections Jan. 2. In written rulings issued Jan. 6, the Electoral Board also stated the candidates’ names should be printed on the primary ballot.

According to the candidates’ lawsuit, however, when an Electoral Board decision is pending at the time of certification, the words “objection pending” is placed under the title of the office being sought and next to the name of the candidate.

Village attorney William Braithwaite blamed contradictions in the state statutes governing cities and villages.

“That’s the case. The statute governing cities cover the possibility after a filing date, contrary to the one covering villages,” Braithwaite said. “It’s completely inconsistent.”

As to the candidates filing nominating papers for the primary, rather than the consolidated election, Braithwaite said the primary never had been used in Campton Hills’ seven-year history.

“This whole procedure was unusual, to put it mildly,” Braithwaite said. “Let’s have a judge figure it out.”

Blecker said the legal maneuver to get on the ballot will cost the candidates thou-

sands of dollars out of their own pockets.

“We have been advised that we could sue to get damages or at least get our money back,” Blecker said.

“However, we would have to sue the village. ... It’s not good politically to sue the village and have it incur the cost. This has to come out of our pocket.”

Strauss said he filed the certifications after the Electoral Board ruled.

“It’s in the hands of the legal profession now,” Strauss said. “The judge will decide if there will be a primary or, if not, then whose names will go on whatever [ballot] we are going to have.”

He became Chief Engineer - Hydraulic Cranes, responsible for developing two hydraulic rough terrain cranes and four hydraulic truck cranes with capacities of 14 to 100 tons for both the United States and European markets.

She studied dietetics at George Washington University and eventually received her B.S. in Health Sciences from Western Michigan University.

She entered the U.S. Navy in 1941 and was stationed for a year in New Caledonia, where she met Andrew Grigsby, her eventual husband.

Together they enjoyed dancing, entertaining, travel, horticulture, and playing cards, particularly bridge. Mrs. Grigsby continued to play bridge into her nineties and was known to be a fierce competitor.

She is survived by her daughter, Jill Grigsby; and son-in-law, Everett Bull; daughter, Andrea Lillie; and son-inlaw, Bryan Clifford; and granddaughter, Janet Light; and grandson-in-law, William Hiesinger; and dear friend, Sandy Parsons.

The Grigsby family is extremely grateful to Eloise “Louie” Bael, Mary Eul, and all of Mrs Grigsby’s caregivers who provided loving companionship along with expert nursing care in her final months.

The district was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada, the release states.

The association’s award is the highest level of professional acknowledgment within the public finance profession, according to the release. This is the third year in a row that the park district has received this honor.

Holly Cabel, the park district’s director of parks and recreation, was selected as the winner of the Award for

Financial Reporting Achievement because of her primary involvement in preparing the district’s award-winning comprehensive report. Cabel was asked to submit portions of the park district’s financial information going back 10 years, as well as other financial data.

Reporting information from the past decade is beneficial because “it shows a good point of comparison, and when someone reads the audit [he or she] can get a full picture and better understand the financial picture of the district,” Cabel wrote in the release.

St. Charles residents can have confidence in the way financial records are being kept by the park district, the release states. “It shows we have done what is required by the [association] and have met their standards,” Cabel wrote.

was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report, the release states. Zhikuan Hu, the Technical Services Center manager for the association, points out that winners, such as the St. Charles Park District can be proud that their creativity and innovation will provide examples for other jurisdictions to follow and promote best practices in government finance, according to the release.

The Government Finance Officers Association is a nonprofit professional association serving about 17,500 government finance professionals with offices in Chicago and Washington, D.C., the release states.

A prospective business owner wants to open a tattoo parlor/art gallery in the Orchard Commerce Center west of Orchard Road, south of Orchard Gateway, North Aurora Community and Economic Development Director Mike Toth told village trustees.

This would be the village’s first tattoo parlor. While art galleries are classified as a permitted use in a B-2 business district, tattoo parlors are currently prohibited, Toth said.

Trustees at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting said they were open to the idea of allowing tattoo parlors as a permitted use in a B-2 district to accommodate the proposal.

“A lot of people have tattoos today,” North Aurora

Village Trustee Mark Guethle said. “The stigma of tattoos is different than it was years ago. I really don’t see it as a problem.”

Although Village Trustee Michael Lowery did not voice any concerns about the tattoo parlor/art gallery being proposed, he was worried about the village being inundated with tattoo parlors.

“Maybe we could put a limit on the number, similar to liquor licenses,” Lowery said.

The North Aurora Plan Commission on Feb. 3 is set to hold a public hearing on allowing tattoo parlors as a permitted use in a B-2 general business district. Village officials also are looking at additional rules for tattoo parlors that would prevent loitering in front of the business and would require proper disposal of biohazard materials. In addition, a parent or guardian would have to physically accompany anyone wanting to get a tattoo or body piercing who is under 18 years of age.

But now, instead of making meaningful reductions in the cost of underwriting the Europeans, we’re going to maintain having about 67,000 military personnel stationed there and add a squadron of F-35 fighter jets.

When will the president and Congress understand that we have limited resources, and taxpayers want to see

their tax money spent in the USA? Instead of operating as “the world’s policeman,” we should focus on rebuilding our decrepit infrastructure. While our airports, bridges, highways, ports and railway systems crumble, the Europeans ride high-speed trains, and we pay for the defense.

This is a shameful misuse of taxpayer dollars that needs to change if we’re to modernize our infrastructure, keep up with China, put millions of Americans back to work and reduce wasteful spending!

Government must play a role in closing the income gap THE WASHINGTON POST Glaring, and growing, inequality of wealth and income is one of the most troubling issues facing the United States and other democratic, capitalist societies. So far, this threat to social stability and political legitimacy has proved as intractable as it is worrisome. The lawmaker and the party that devise an effective solution could deserve a grand electoral prize.

Which brings us to the anti-inequality package that Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., the top Democrat on the House Budget Committee, unveiled last week in hopes of tilting federal fiscal policy toward the “99 percent” and reinvigorat-

ing his party’s message. Van Hollen’s “Action Plan to Grow the Paychecks of All, Not Just the Wealthy Few” is worth examining on its merits – and because it foreshadows some of the ideas and arguments that President Barack Obama will put forward in his State of the Union address today.

The representative’s plan is more ambitious than what the White House has in mind.

Over the next 10 years, he would use $1.2 trillion in loophole-closings and tax increases on the wealthiest 1 percent to fund an equal amount in tax breaks for households making less than $200,000. He would impose a 0.1 percent levy on financial transactions to raise revenue while discouraging

market-distorting computerized trading and “churning” of accounts; on the tax-break side, Van Hollen would create a $1,000 per worker “paycheck bonus” credit, among others.

Van Hollen deserves praise for thinking big about a big issue and for taking aim at the tax code’s undue preferences for investment income and the upward bias of credits and deductions more generally. A intriguing point is his suggested tax incentive for companies to shift spending from executive bonuses to wage increases.

It would be all too easy, of course, to note the many ways in which his plan might be politically unrealistic, starting with the fact that it hinges on getting the disputatious

European Union to coordinate its financial transactions tax with Van Hollen’s proposed levy so as not to drive U.S. financial business abroad. Van Hollen is surely right, though, to insist that policy should reward production more and speculation less.

Though commendably deficit-neutral in its own terms, Van Hollen’s concept (like Obama’s) has a big drawback: It spends all of the revenue from politically difficult tax reforms on politically popular tax relief for the middle class. Despite recent cyclical improvements in the federal deficit, the structural debt remains unsustainable in the view of the Congressional Budget Office. And it can’t

be addressed without at least some of the $1.2 trillion Van Hollen would tax from the rich and give to everyone else.

This is even harder to justify given that much of the benefit from Van Hollen’s proposal would flow to households that are decidedly not poor. Both substantively and symbolically, it’s a mistake to suggest that the United States can be made more egalitarian and more fiscally secure without asking anything of families making as much as $200,000 a year – nearly four times the median income. Government has a role to play in correcting skewed distribution of wealth and income, but its efforts should be focused on those who need help the most.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Regional champions look to maintain confidence

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com “Slow your roll” hardly registers as lane lexicon for any member of the St. Charles East boys bowling team.

“We want to win this year,” sophomore Dean Mudlong said. “I’m going to be very blunt about it, but we are able to win. It’s just a matter of fact if we can make our own shots.”

East accomplished the first phase of its three-tiered, state championship objective Saturday, earning the Westminster Christian Regional title at Hoffman Estates’ Poplar Creek Bowl with a team score of 6,101.

To be sure, that marked a satisfying accomplishment, but it’s also safe to say the Saints took stock of their regional score and realized 11 winning teams statewide fared better.

For a group that established a new IHSA record with a single-series score of 3,493 in a dual against DeKalb last month, crunching the numbers often comes instinctively.

Still, the Saints are careful not to grade themselves on too heavy a curve, even as the competition swirls from house to house.

“A lot of times, it really doesn’t seem like we’re bowling our opponent. It’s more like we’re bowling ourselves,” junior Cole Cartee said. “Because we’re trying to beat each other for high average on the team, and that kind of motivates us to bowl even better.”

The Saints finished third at last season’s regionals but were not among the top six schools at the Rockford Boylan Sectional and missed a berth at the state meet.

Dean Mudlong and his older brother, Aaron – whose parents, Cedric and Cindy, met at a Chicago bowling alley and never allowed their children to use bumpers – competed at regionals in 2014 alongside three players nearing graduation.

This past weekend, Saints coach Steve Dessauer used seven players – some bowled only one game – reinforcing East’s seasonlong depth.

“We’re pretty surprised by ourselves and how well we are doing, because we knew we were going to be good, but we didn’t expect ourselves to be up and above this good,” said Aaron Mudlong, a senior.

East welcomed the return of senior Rob Olsen, whose family moved back to St. Charles from Arizona before the school year, to team with classmates Aaron Mudlong and Dom Strauss.

Easily identifiable by his long hair, if not his average, Strauss goes either by “Jesus” or “Fabio,” pending the situation.

“He ponytails it,” Dean Mudlong said, “and then if he starts doing bad, he’ll take it out.”

In step with Dessauer’s assertion that “there’s a new guy leading us just about every day,” the Saints appreciate that safety blanket just as well.

“It’s good to know, too, if you falter, that you have teammates that are able to pick you up,” Dean Mudlong said.

The Mudlong brothers vied with Larkin’s Adrian Kyles for the top average in

the Upstate Eight Conference, a league the Saints won with relative comfort.

Kyles and the rest of his Larkin teammates will join East at Saturday’s Stevenson Sectional at Lakeside Lanes in Mundelein, alongside conference counterparts Geneva and South Elgin.

As usual, the Saints will look to maintain their confidence while also realizing the reality of their latest clean slate.

“We didn’t know we were breaking a record at first [in December]. We just knew we were all doing well,” Aaron Mudlong said. “That’s all we knew. If we’re all doing well, we know we’re going to shoot a high score.”

And if Fabio shows up in the box score, so be it.

that shake out during spring training,” Bochtler said. “I”ll have my eyes on certain people that we’re projecting to go toward over to Kane County, but when I get the kids and they’re officially mine, it’s a little bit different.”

Bochtler is especially noted for his ability to teach the changeup. He’s helped big leaguers past and present with the pitch, including Jason Frasor, Trevor Hoffman and Johan Santana.

“My last few years as a player, I was basically a coach in Triple-A, so it wasn’t a real stretch for me to get into coaching,” Bochtler said. “I guess it was a little bit more difficult to get back in than I would have thought. But I got in my first year trying. There’s a lot of guys wanting to get back coaching who have a difficult time getting in just because there’s so few jobs, you know.”

‘W’ flag redux: Cougars manager Mark Grudzielanek won’t

know the makeup of his first club until at least two months from now, but he’s at least certain of one thing.

He plans to put a premium on playing winning baseball, a philosophy that runs counter to his own minor league experience in the Montreal Expos system from 1991 to 1994.

“I don’t think I ever heard that before back in the day when I played,” Grudzielanek said. “I don’t think that was an issue. They really didn’t care about winning back then.

So when you go out there and have that drive for these kids, and you can push these kids in a way, I think it’s awesome and beneficial for them in the long run.”

Competing as a Cubs affiliate, the Cougars won a franchise-record 98 games last season, including a 7-0 postseason run to the Midwest League title. Several new Cougars figure to tout their own 2014 championship pedigree. Arizona’s

New Cougars pitching coach Doug Bochtler admits “I don’t have a coaching job because of my playing career,” a run that lasted parts of six seasons with four clubs.

Instead, it’s an intense dedication and diligence to his craft that piqued the parent Arizona Diamondbacks’ interest.

Each offseason, Bochtler fans the flame while working with pitchers from pre-teen through college age at the Cherokee Baseball and Softball Academy in Knoxville, Tennessee. He even credits the experience for enhancing his effectiveness with aspiring major leaguers.

“Coaching is communicating, and it’s communicating the knowledge I have to the players that are entrusted to me,” Bochtler said. “The more people you work with, the more people that you see, the

more ways you learn how to communicate effectively. You also don’t get stuck in the same old thing of, ‘This worked for the last five guys I had.’ You have to make it work for everybody.”

Bochtler enters his fifth season with the D’backs organization with a sound understanding of the Midwest League.

Last season, he was pitching coach of the South Bend SilverHawks, since renamed the Cubs after Kane County and South Bend essentially swapped affiliates. South Bend’s 3.49 ERA ranked fourth in the 16-team MWL as the club, not unlike the Cougars, dealt with a heavy dose of roster moves.

In that regard, Bochtler figures he’ll work with some 2014 retreads in Kane County, although he doesn’t waste much time on guesswork before spring training begins in March.

I’m the youngest kid in my grade,” Pickard said. “I thought I was going to be 6-2 or 6-3, but then I kind of just kept growing.”

Pickard’s game had to evolve with his changing stature. In Monday’s Martin Luther King shootout finale at Wheaton Warrenville South, Pickard showed signs his game is growing, too. He scored a career-high 19 points in a 64-54 loss to Bartlett in the last of the Cadets’ four games of the shootout.

Pickard’s breakout performance was sorely needed for Marmion, which was without standout forward Jake Esp, who sprained an ankle earlier in the day in a loss to Plainfield South.

The Cadets (9-9) finished 1-3 at the tournament, having split games Saturday with a loss to York and a win against

Schaumburg.

Against Bartlett, Pickard grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with his offensive outburst, helping keep the Cadets competitive against the favored Hawks (14-6). He showed an inside-outside game that Marmion coach Joe Currie expects will continue to develop.

“He’s a perimeter player trying to learn how to play post because he’s grown so much,” Currie said.

Pickard, who came out for football for the first time as a senior to gain strength and coordination, said he’s come to embrace being a big guy.

“I like playing inside,” Pickard said. “A lot of my points I get put-backs and garbage points. Adding those little garbage points are kind of key. … I’m still working on my post moves and trying to translate that into my game.”

The Cadets were competitive throughout the first half against Bartlett but the Hawks surged ahead by 23 points early in the fourth quarter. Marmion, however, forced Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith to re-insert some

starters late with a spirited push, closing to within 6053 on Jordan Glasgow free throws with 55 seconds left.

The Cadets, however, came no closer.

Glasgow led the Cadets offensively in both games Monday, scoring 23 points in the 63-50 loss to Plainfield South and 20 more in the Bartlett game. Currie credited the brawny guard with helping keep the team afloat after losing Esp, whom Currie hopes could return by this weekend.

“It is a challenge because you’ve got to try to manipulate some other lineups,” Currie said. “ … When you take 18 points a game out, that’s tough numbers to fill, and 6½ rebounds. So those are hard things to recover. To Jordan’s credit, even when [Esp] went down, Jordan said ‘You know what, guys, jump on board, and I’m going to take us where we can go.’ ” Marmion, however, struggled with its perimeter shooting against Bartlett while the Hawks made 11 3-pointers, including 6 of 7 from beyond the arc by forward Robby Jimenez.

LAKE FOREST – The best thing about John Fox being the new coach of the Bears is 10 seconds into his introductory news conference Monday, it was clear that he is the kind of guy you’d love to hang out with at the corner tavern and knock a few back, gals and guys invited.

Not once in nine years with Lovie Smith or two seasons with Marc Trestman did I ever get the impression that we might enjoy hanging out.

Lovie wasn’t a bad guy, but he was never truly at ease with the media or fans, and things got progressively worse as his coaching tenure wore on.

Personally, I really like Trestman and former general manager Phil Emery, probably in part because of their awkwardness, and awkward is the only way one can objectively describe their public personas.

Why does this matter?

The stroll through the rose garden and current honeymoon the Bears are enjoying isn’t going to last forever.

Ask Fox’s predecessors.

They aren’t a playoff team that was general managed and coached to a 5-11 record. They are a 5-11 team with overrated talent in several areas, and GM Ryan Pace and Fox now have to set about the difficult task of fixing that.

There will be potholes, molehills and possibly even a mountain or two to climb along the way. Over the past decade when things got tough, Bears fans got angry, and Smith and Trestman usually just made things worse.

Fox is a savvy veteran of these wars, and I got the impression as I watched him say hello Monday that in another life I could see him occasionally calling in to an all-sports talker to share an opinion or two.

Great news guys: It seems as though Fox is one of us, a trait almost never found in an NFL coach.

Pete Carroll has it, the Harbaugh brothers, Chuck Pagano and Bruce Arians do, too, and by the way, what else do they all have in common?

I think this is going to be fun.

Here is what Fox said

I wasn’t on the receiving end, but I still feel for the other guy.

“But that’s OK. Like I said before, this is a competitive game. We know what we’re signing up for. I tell my players all the time, we’re under attack. You can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen.

It’s what we sign up for. It’s why we’re compensated so well for what we do.

“I explained to my wife one time wondering what time I’m going to be home. I said, ‘Honey, I’ll get a paper route. I’ll be home a lot, but we’ve got to move.’ I was younger and not as mature when I said that.”

Let’s worry about Super Bowls later. For now, I think we’re really going to like this guy.

The St. Charles North girls basketball team played a more physical brand of basketball Saturday, resulting in favorable margins on the glass and at the free throw line as host North topped St. Charles East, 61-43.

The North Stars avenged an earlier loss at East by playing hard-nosed basketball, as evidenced by 31 trips to the free-throw line compared to 11 for East.

Senior wing Nichole Davidson was a frequent visitor to the stripe en route to a 20-point, 10-rebound night.

She seemingly sought contact on every dash to the rim.

“We said we had to start being aggressive,” Davidson said. “Every time someone got

Stars snap Saints’ 13-game winning streak

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Given the pair of lopsided beatings his St. Charles North boys basketball team absorbed from St. Charles East earlier this season, North coach Tom Poulin figured a history lesson was in order leading up to Saturday’s third meeting of the season.

“I actually was printing out the all-time results because I wanted to show the guys, you know what, we do win [against East],” Poulin said. “But this one right here will go down as good as any of them.”

Saturday’s 78-75 overtime triumph for North – thick with tension and clutch shots both ways – jumps to the top of the list of memorable crosstown showdowns, and likely enters the discussion among top North wins in program history.

Fittingly for North, heartand-soul seniors Jack Callaghan and Jake Ludwig each buried 3-pointers during the final minute of the OT session, with Ludwig’s coming in the closing seconds to break the tie at 75. After a timeout, East had only 2.1 seconds to work with and could not prevent North from snapping its 13game winning streak.

“I wanted to shoot the jumper just because I’d been going to the rim all game, and I felt like they were going to key on that,” Ludwig said of his game-winner. “So I just saw the opportunity, and pulled up. … It felt good. I’d missed a couple before. I needed to get some more legs under it, and it felt good.”

Callaghan’s long 3-pointer – coming after a crucial Johnny Davern offensive rebound – put North on top, 75-73, with 46 seconds to play in OT, but East senior point guard Cole Gentry tied the score at 75 with 18 seconds left on a short jumper.

Poulin then allowed Ludwig and company to play through the growing noise in North’s crowded gymnasium.

“I thought if I take a timeout, I’m going to draw something up to get it in Jake’s hands. It’s in his hands, let’s let them play,” Poulin said.

Ludwig and Callaghan played key roles in last year’s triple-overtime loss to Chicago juggernaut Simeon at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament, a performance that earned North’s program statewide cachet. Callaghan said Saturday’s result made this one sweeter.

“This is probably better because it’s our rivals on our home court,” Callaghan said.

“It’s kind of poetic justice

because Simeon hit one 3 all game, and that sent it into overtime, and I had one [made 3-pointer to put North ahead].”

Both teams were under heavy duress at different points of the fourth quarter.

East led, 70-66, with 43 seconds left in regulation before Ludwig came to North’s rescue.

He made two free throws to bring his team within two, then stole an inbounds pass and zipped in for the tying bas-

ket with 25 seconds left.

Gentry missed a 3-pointer to win it, but the senior scored five straight points when the Saints (15-2, 7-1 UEC River) faced a seven-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer that brought East within 63-61.

East senior forward Mick Vyzral then pocketed a pair of 3-pointers, each moving the Saints ahead by one point, and two Jake Asquini free throws and one from James McQuillan put the Saints in position to close out North.

East’s inability to do so hinged on subpar defense and rebounding, in Saints coach Pat Woods’ estimation.

“The bottom line is we didn’t defend as well as we have been defending, as well as we defended last night against Larkin,” Woods said.

“We did not defend well, and when you have kids like Ludwig out there who can make plays with the ball, shooters, I thought (Armon) Osborne was solid and Callaghan hit some big ones, so when you don’t defend well and you leave shooters wide open, as we usually get to do to other people, that’s what happens.”

The North Stars (12-7, 6-2 UEC River) showcased a much more well-rounded squad than in the first two meetings against East, with role players such as starting center Brendan McCarthy and reserves Osborne and Davern providing boosts at critical times.

Callaghan, while a forward, often positioned his teammates for success with slick passes that caught the Saints off guard.

“When they started doubling, that’s when we started to attack and found open guys

for layups,” Callaghan said.

A monster performance from East’s Vyzral (24 points, 14 rebounds) was dampened by the outcome. Gentry had 22 points and Asquini added 11, including a trio of 3-pointers during the first quarter.

North, coming off an abysmal shooting night in a 36-point clunker Friday at Geneva, rediscovered its offensive rhythm behind strong nights from Ludwig (22 points), Callaghan (15), Osborne (14) and Mikey Schroeder (11). Callaghan led North with 11 rebounds.

The win kept North’s conference hopes alive; the North Stars trail East and Geneva by one game each in the loss column. Maybe just as importantly, the North Stars regained the respect of their crosstown rivals after disheartening showings across the river at the Thanksgiving tournament and in the teams’ first conference meeting.

The possibility of a fourth meeting exists as both teams are part of the Class 4A Geneva Regional. But if this was the teams’ final meeting of the season, North couldn’t have asked for more delicious closure.

Poulin said his pregame message included challenging his players with the question, “What kind of men are you?”

“Can you open your chest up and give your teammate your heart?” Poulin said.

“That was kind of the pregame speech. It was just kind of gut it out and grind it out because they’re so good, you make one mistake, it’s three points or it’s a layup. It’s satisfying because the kids gave they all they had, and that’s what you have to do to beat a team like St. Charles East.”

In 18th-century England, most women married when young, had children and learned to cook, take care of the house and children, make textiles or at least create bedding or clothing, and be her husband’s helper when needed. Hester Bateman was an exception. She married a man who made gold chains. He died after they had six children. He left the metal-working tools to his wife in his will so he must have known what a skillful silversmith she was. Hester became a registered silvermaker in 1761 using the mark “HB” in script. By 1774 she was in her own business with two of her sons.

They used the latest methods and made their silverware from thin sheets of silver rather than the Sheffield plate type made by others. They stayed with traditional styles and made everything from tea caddies to inkwells. Hester retired in 1790, and died in 1794. She was the first well-known female silversmith in England, and her work has always been popular with today’s collectors. I knew about the pioneering woman. While in college I looked for, bought for $15, and still have a pair of Hester Bateman silver sugar tongs. It was one of my first antiques. Brunk Auctions in Asheville, N. C., sold a Bateman teapot in the fall of 2014, for $2,832. *** Q: In 1960 we bought a queen-size birch bed and dresser marked “Cal Shop.” I can’t find any information about the maker or value. Can you help?

A: The trademark “Cal Shop” was owned by California Furniture Shops, Ltd., which was based in Los Angeles.

It was in business from at least the late 1940s into the 1970s or ‘80s. Your bedroom set would sell as used furniture if it’s in excellent shape. For almost 50 million years, manatees have grazed the earth’s tropical lagoons, rivers and bays. In Florida alone, there were once thousands of manatees. But now there are less than 3,000 in Florida. They are in danger of becoming extinct.

The warm, shallow waters where manatees live are disappearing or becoming polluted. This loss of habitat is another reason manatees are endangered.

In 1981 singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffet and Bob Graham, who was then governor of Florida, started the Save the Manatee Club because manatees were put on the international endangered wildlife list.

The goal of the club is to protect the habitats where manatees live and reduce manatee deaths due to human interaction.

On their website you can watch manatees on their web cam during the season. The scars on their bodies identify individual manatees.

You can also adopt a real manatee through the club and help protect those manatees at one of three locations in Florida.

Dear Abby: I came out of the closet when my son was 4. I thought I had taught him not to judge because of a label. He’s now 30, with a wife and two adorable children who own my heart.

When my granddaughter was born, my partner and I were at the hospital and have visited with them often and they with us. However, after my grandson was born last year, my son quit speaking to me.

I have asked him numerous times what the issue is. His response is: “I have to protect my children from people who are gay. I don’t want them to know anyone who is gay.”

His wife and her family are very religious, and I feel this is the real reason.

You can’t force your son and his wife to have contact with you if they don’t want to.

Leave open the possibility

that they may, over time, reconcile their love for you with their faith.

For your own emotional well-being, it’s important you find other outlets for your maternal instincts and go on with your life because any child would be blessed to be a part of it.

Sadly, a large number of LGBT young people are rejected by their parents when they come out. These kids would benefit greatly from having a positive adult mentor like you.

Dental checkups are necessary even for faithful flossers Dear Doctor K: I take good care of my teeth, brushing and flossing regularly. Do I still need to have regular dental checkups?

Dear Reader: Even if you brush your teeth three times a day and floss daily, regular checkups with a dental professional are a must. For most people, two checkups per year are enough.

That’s what I have. Routine visits usually include a professional cleaning, an exam and possibly X-rays.

Professional cleaning rids your teeth of tartar. This thick stuff can build up in places that are hard to reach with a toothbrush. Or in places that are easy to reach with a toothbrush – if you don’t regularly use a toothbrush!

If tartar is not removed, it can lead to cavities and tooth decay. During the cleaning, the dentist or hygienist might use a small metal instrument with a bladelike end to scrape off tartar above and below the gum line. He or she may also use an ultrasonic vibrating device to shake loose plaque and tartar. The dentist or hygienist will polish your teeth with a lightly abrasive paste and finish up with a flossing.

After your teeth are clean,

The dentist will check for gum disease by examining your gums for swelling and redness and by measuring the spaces between the teeth and the gums.

Your dentist will test how your upper and lower teeth come together. He or she will look for evidence of tooth grinding, or problems with the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. The dentist will also check for signs of infection and oral cancer. Finally, your dentist will look for clues as to whether problems in your mouth are actually symptoms of other diseases in the body.

Virtually everyone who visits the dentist will have X-rays taken at some point. Teeth, bones, fillings and restorations appear

lighter because they block more of the X-rays than soft tissue. Decayed or swollen, pus-filled areas around teeth appear darker than healthy teeth.

X-rays are valuable for uncovering problems in places that can’t easily be seen – cavities inside and between the teeth, for example. They can also show wisdom teeth that have failed to come through the gum and bone deterioration below the gum line.

For me, regular cleaning of the teeth has almost always been a pleasant experience – with one notable exception. The dental hygienist had escaped from Communist Czechoslovakia. She liked to talk, and, given the circumstances, I couldn’t say much in reply.

That day, she was talking about all of the reasons she hated the Communists. With each new reason, she cleaned the teeth by the gum line a little harder. I blame the Czech Communists for making my mouth sore.

Dear Teens: Does a firstborn child have a higher IQ (intelligence quotient) than brothers and sisters born later? This debate has been ongoing for centuries.

In 1973 a study of 400,000 men in Holland found that the first-born child had the highest IQ and the IQ scores decreased from first-born children through younger brothers and sisters.

A later study conducted by a Norwegian group using Norwegian government and military records compared first-, second- and third-born men. The study, published in the journal Science, analyzed a database of a quarter million men born between 1967 and 1986 and found that firstborn men performed better on a military intelligence exam than second-born and third-born men by an average of 2 and 3.2 IQ points, respectively. But the findings also discovered that second-born men with an elder brother or sister who died at a young age showed intelligence equal with first-born men.

This suggests that when a child has the parents as a “captive audience” without interference of a sibling, that parental attention is more important in IQ ratings than birth order.

What does all of this really mean? Probably very little, if anything. It’s been proven that parents with higher IQ scores have children who have higher IQ scores, regardless of the number of children they have. The same correlation is true for children whose parents have lower IQ scores.

But don’t get fooled thinking that only those with high IQ scores are the ones who succeed in life. Those who succeed are those who reach their potential.

Her stepfather is a well-known criminal attorney, and her mother is a veterinarian. My friend has her own car and tons of clothes. She also seems to change boyfriends every two or three weeks, and never lacks for dates.

Yet with all of this, she tells me that one of these days she’s going to commit suicide. When I ask her why she feels that way, she says she really doesn’t know. I’ve known my friend for over two years. When I first met her she was a happy-go-lucky girl, but not anymore.

Why would someone who appears to have everything think of killing herself?

– Nameless, Denver, Colorado Dear Nameless: Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young adults, but someone who talks of suicide may not actually want to kill herself. Talking about suicide – or even attempting it – may be no more than a signal that a major problem exists.

When a teen says, “I wish I were dead,” she is really saying she wants to live, but is very unhappy, according to Dr. Lillian Beard, professor of Child Health and Development at George Washington University.

But all threats of suicide must always be taken seriously. Suicide claims young people from all socioeconomic levels, from very rich to very poor.
