Delnor sees its first baby of 2015

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Delnor Hospital’s first baby of 2015, Makiko Takayama, was born at 9:25 a.m. Thursday, weighing 6 pounds, 14 ounces and measuring 19.5 inches.

She is the second daughter of proud parents Ricky and Jona Takayama of St. Charles, who also have Kelly, 4.

Both mother and baby are doing well, Ricky Takayama said.

Jona Takayama’s due date was Jan. 9, Ricky Takayama said.

Barely 3½ hours later, little Makiko Takayama was born.

Ricky Takayama said the labor for their first child was even shorter than that, about 10 minutes.

What was especially wonderful was that he was able to be there for his second daughter’s birth.

“I’m very excited,” Ricky Takayama said. “Because our first daughter was born in the Philippines where my wife is from, and I wasn’t there. This is the first one that I witnessed.”

Ricky Takayama said he showed his mother and aunt the new baby on Skype.

LOCAL BRIEFS Merb’s Candies issuing recall for caramel apples Merb’s Candies, a St. Louis, Missouri, firm, is issuing a voluntary recall of the Merb’s Candies brand Bionic Apples and Double Dipped Apples because they have the potential to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

Although no cases have been reported in Illinois, according to a news release issued by the Kane County Health Department on Tuesday morning, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has noted 30 illnesses in 10 states linked to an outbreak, and it has advised consumers not to eat commercially produced, pre-packaged caramel apples until more is known.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Forest Preserve District to offer program Jan. 15 ST. CHARLES – The Kane County Forest Preserve District will offer a program on Jan. 15 for those who have wrestled with the issues of conservation, preservation, hunting and wildlife. It is set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Brewster Creek Forest Preserve, 6N921 Route 25, St. Charles.

The Up in Arms program will examine these questions: Who hunts and why? Can a naturalist be a hunter? Can a hunter be a naturalist? What influences our opinions of hunting? What ethical dilemmas are involved in hunting? How can we face the challenges these issues present?

‘Little Naturalists’ programs planned

WHAT: The Forest Preserve District of Kane County has planned “Little Naturalists” programs for 4- to 5-year olds. The hour-long sessions are intended to help kids discover the wonders of nature through a variety of activities, including stories, nature hikes, songs, games and crafts, led by forest preserve district naturalists. The program is a drop-off one – parents, caregivers and siblings may enjoy the trails of LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve while their children are participating, or they can wait inside the nature center. Registration is $5 a child for each session.

Birders seek first sightings of the new year

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – The new year began bright, sunshiny, cold and windy, but the nip in the air would not stop a group of birders from taking its first bird walk of 2015 at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles.

About 15 people came out for the annual event – armed with binoculars and all bundled up against the cold. The walk was sponsored by Kane County Audubon and led by Nancy Schnaitman of Elburn.

“It’s more pleasant here in the woods out of the wind,” Schnaitman said as she navigated the group to a path between the trees.

“I think the birds celebrated too much the night before and

got drunk,” said Wally Koch, 58, of Aurora. “They had too much fermented berries, and now they’ve got hangovers.”

Audubon president Bob Andrini of St. Charles said birders should look for “whitewash,” where owls perch and relieve themselves. The telltale droppings on a tree would be a marker for an owl sighting.

“Basically, we’re looking for owl poop,” Andrini said, as birders craned their necks, scanning for whitewash.

Suddenly a bird flashed by – perhaps a cardinal – and then a birder called out a glimpse of a downy woodpecker.

Ward of St. Charles said she had not missed a New Year’s Day bird walk in at least 15 years – except for those canceled because of severe weather.

“I think it’s a great way to start the new year,” Ward said.

The next Audubon bird walk is at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Dick Young Forest Preserve/Nelson Lake Marsh, 39W115 Main St., Batavia Township. All of the group’s bird walks are open to the public.

2015 brings new state laws covering transportation, boating and more As Illinoisans begin a new year, they face 220 new laws that took effect Jan. 1, approved by lawmakers and Gov. Pat Quinn. The highlights cover various issues, from transportation to wild animals.

New transportation laws After lawmakers raised the speed limit to 70 mph on downstate interstates in 2014, they decided to do the same in 2015 for Chicago-area interstates under the Illinois Tollway Authority’s control. Another bill, sponsored by state Sen. Mike Noland, D-Elgin, now prohibits police from taking a person’s driver’s license as bond after pulling the person over for a minor traffic violation, such as speeding. Illinois was one of six states that allowed police to confiscate licenses for minor traffic violations, according to Illinois Senate Republicans.

Boating Legislation sponsored by state Sen. Julie Morrison, D-Deerfield, requires boaters towing a person to display an orange flag. The bill was in-

spired by Morrison’s nephew, Tony Borcia, a 10-year-old from Libertyville who died after a crash along the Chain O’ Lakes in 2012. Borcia fell off an inner tube being pulled by a boat on Petite Lake and died after being struck by another boat. The flag is meant to alert nearby boaters that a person is being towed.

Another law sponsored by Morrison allows police to seize the crafts of intoxicated boaters in certain cases.

It expands an existing law that made it illegal for parents to allow underage drinking at their home. The new law extends the prohibition to property owned by parents outside of their homes.

Animal protections Black bears, cougars and

gray wolves are now protected species in Illinois. Although still rare, the wild animals in recent years have been spotted around the state, including a black bear seen last summer in a field between Marengo and Belvidere, near Interstate 90. The new designation allows conservation officials to better protect the animals, as they make appearances in Illinois.

Children and health Kids younger than 18 who suffer from seizures now can qualify for the state’s medical marijuana pilot program with a parent’s consent. Another law requires retailers to sell e-cigarettes either behind the counter, in an age-restricted area or a sealed display case.

Lawmakers also expanded schools’ jurisdiction with cyberbullying in 2015. Schools can discipline students who bully others through personal phones and computers, along with school-owned devices.

Mark was also an avid local and Chicago sports fan. He certainly passed that passion on to his sons, as they spent countless hours attending and watching games together. Not lost on his family was the fact that he never missed any of his sons’ sporting events.

Throughout his life, Mark was a proud supporter and member of the VFW, St. John Neumann Catholic Church, and the Loyal Order of the Moose. If you ever spent time with Mark, you undoubtedly experienced his fantastic sense of humor. Even as his illness progressed, he still retained the ability to make us all laugh with his incredible wit.

His smile could light up a room and his laugh was contagious.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard William and Elsie (Johnsen) Lindgren; and brother-in-law, Roger Holdaway.

Mark is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 40 years, Mona (Ruane) Lindgren. New Year’s resolutions for our hometown roads You’re out driving. It’s 2015, a new year. So far, so good.

Until running into last year’s car-mangling structures, menacing conditions and annoying traffic lights. They squelch your Ghandi-cool, Starbucks-alert, NPR-knowledgeable internal George Clooney, releasing instead your finger-waving, tongue-cursing, brake/accelerator-pumping, external green-abbed Hulk.

You wish, “If only our communities would make some New Year’s roadway resolutions!”

Why not? Let’s start in Batavia, where Dimples Donuts meets the railroad tracks at the four-way stop where Prairie Street crosses East Wilson, a.k.a. the J.B. Nelson School backup. Every morning and afternoon, cars stretch out longer than a prairie coal train. Can you say, “Traffic light, please?!”

And Geneva, how about highlighting the median running along Williamsburg Avenue from Delnor Hospital’s entrance to Randall Road? From dusk to dawn, it’s practically invisible. Leaving Geneva Commons recently, I passed a luckless car stuck atop it, a turtle straddling a log, legs dangling, helpless.

Really, Geneva? No luminescent paint or warning sign?

REALLY? OK, St. Charles, now 15 years into the New Millennium, how about joining the rest of America by installing motion detector traffic lights? Or do you intentionally want to anger downtown shoppers, restaurant-goers and pub crawlers who, like me, often go elsewhere rather than wait for a green light when the nearest cross traffic inhabits Ohio and Nebraska?

Finally, West Chicago (with apologies to Carl Sandburg), you are Bumper Butcher for the Valley, Crash Maker, Stacker of Abandoned Vehicles, City of No Snowplows. They tell me you are callous, and I believe them, for I have ridden your ice-slick, snow-covered streets luring two-wheel drives into ditches and

One snowy night last November, my son found traction until crossing into West Chicago. “At least six or eight cars had slid off Route 59,” he said later. “I turned around and came home.”

My wife teaches in Wheaton.

For over 25 years she’s enjoyed a safe winter commute – except through West Chicago, where dangerous conditions on Route 38 force traffic to a crawl.

To add insult to scary roads, West Chicago, you’re also soaking the Holingers. At night, when virtually unnoticeable, your red-light camera enforcement installations ambushed both my wife and son when slowing, not stopping, before turning right on red. A hundred bucks a pop.

Hmm. I wonder if your camera enforcement enthusiasts memorized each Big Brother Is Watching location, certain to follow the letter of the law there – but maybe fudge elsewhere?

How about sinking that blood money into more salting and plowing? If you’re truly interested in traffic safety, clear surfaces protect drivers better than a camera flash.

Now, dear reader, it’s your turn; encourage your hometown officials to act on these resolutions – or offer your own worst-case scenarios.

That way, we’ll all prosper from a happier – and safer – new year.

The ultimate punishment THE WASHINGTON POST The United States made progress on the death penalty in 2014, applying the ultimate punishment more sparingly than before. But it can’t be said to have been a good year.

Dozens of people still were sentenced to die, even as a handful more of inmates on death row were exonerated. The mechanics of state-sanctioned death also were in the spotlight, as botched executions turned gruesome.

According to a year-end count from the Death Penalty Information Center, the country sentenced 72 people to death this year, the fewest number in 40 years, down from a high of 315 in 1996. The nation

also conducted the fewest executions in 20 years, killing 35 people. That’s down from the 1999 high of 98 executions. As usual, just a few states were responsible for the vast majority: Missouri, Texas and Florida killed 28 people. Oklahoma, Georgia, Arizona and Ohio executed another seven inmates between them.

All states should end the death penalty within their borders. The risk of executing the innocent, evidenced by the seven men who were exonerated this year, is unacceptable.

The financial cost of administering death penalty systems also is too high. Either consideration overwhelms arguments about the punishment’s

usefulness as a crime deterrent.

But states that nevertheless continue to put people to death should at least make the punishment’s administration as fair and humane as possible. That means declining to execute if proper procedures, qualified staff and necessary equipment are absent. It means ensuring that strong legal protections are in place: The institutional presumption should be that the death penalty is to be applied only in truly exceptional circumstances. It also means that governors should use their authority to grant clemency in cases where there is any hint of doubt – or any room for mercy.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

“It’s a lot easier to watch your team win than to watch them lose because then people are like, ‘Oh, we need to get you back, it’s a different game,’ ” Temple said. “Those are two good teams we lost to. Who knows if I was out there what the result would have been, but you definitely

The Geneva boys basketball team went 10-2 in the 2014 portion of its schedule, yet the Vikings are seeking to raise their level for the stretch run.

The return of senior guard Pace Temple could be a big part of setting that improvement in motion.

Temple missed the Vikings’ first 12 games with an MCL tear suffered during the Geneva football team’s Class 7A quarterfinal loss to CaryGrove. He expects to make his basketball season debut in the Vikings’ next game Thursday at Elgin.

In Geneva’s losses to St. Charles East and Neuqua Valley, too many turnovers and struggles defending the 3-point line hurt the Vikings.

Along with helping shore up those areas, Temple showed during last year’s run to a sectional final that he can be an explosive scorer from the perimeter and in transition.

Still, Temple has played relatively little basketball since last March, mostly focusing on football training during the summer. Considering that rust to deal with – not to mention building back confidence in his left knee – Temple is glad to have almost two full months to play before the postseason arrives.

“My expectations are the only thing that should be really lacking is maybe my feel for the game a little bit, being out that long and playing with some guys I haven’t had the pleasure of playing with yet,” Temple said. “So maybe my feel for the game and conditioning, those are two things my expectations aren’t too high with, but other than that, I want to come back and be a very similar player to what I was.”

Temple said he’ll likely play with a knee brace, at least initially.

“I’ve been in the gym a lot,” Temple said. “I’ve been wearing a brace but I’ve been

As frustrating as it’s been for Temple to miss the first six weeks of the basketball season, he also was heartbroken to be sidelined for most of the Vikings’ football playoff loss at Cary-Grove. His injury came during the first half after taking a hit while trying to run in a two-point conversion following a botched point-after snap.

The injury looked at the time that it could be even worse than it turned out to be.

“Honestly, the first thing that came into my head was this isn’t good. The second thing is I need to run off the field to show I’m good because at that point it was more of a fear of this could be taking me out of the game, which obviously it ended up taking me out of the game, but I wasn’t really thinking ‘Oh, no, this is my ACL,’ it was more ‘Oh, no, this could take me out of the game.’

“But then definitely took a deep breath, and it was a relief when [the doctor] said to me and when my parents came in, ‘I checked his ACL about five times; it’s not the ACL, it’s not the ACL,’ so that was definitely a sign of relief and some good news in a bad time.”

Temple, a wide receiver/ defensive back in football, received a Division I scholarship offer from Wyoming before the season. He said he remains in contact with Wyoming and is still hopeful of additional D-I offers materializing; Dayton and Butler are among his other suitors.

“I’m definitely open to all different levels,” Temple said.

“I do my best in anything when I’m pushed and I think at the D-I level, that’s obviously where I would be pushed most and where I could grow the most as an athlete.”

What’s the plan for Jay Cutler tops the list; where should the Bears go another

And forget, even, the obvious: “Who are you going to hire to coach?”

When the Bears brass – chairman George McCaskey, president Ted Phillips and advisor Ernie Accorsi – interview four general manager candidates, there are questions they’ll need answered.

Here are five big ones:

1. What’s your plan for Jay Cutler?

McCaskey said he was a “big fan” of his quarterback, both personally and professionally, “but all of the personnel decisions are going to be up to the new general manager and the new head coach.”

It stands to reason, then, that Bears management has the stomach for parting with Cutler, be it through trade or release.

But would you?

Cutler’s $15.5 million salary in 2015 is already guaranteed. But if Cutler is on the roster on the third day of the league season – March 12 – $10 million of the $16 million owed him in 2016 becomes guaranteed, too.

Your future bosses said they have Super Bowl aspirations this upcoming season.

Are your odds better with Cutler or the oh-so-unimpressive list of free-agent quarterbacks?

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com WASHINGTON – Standing in the middle of a baseball clubhouse with a dozen cameras in his face, shortly after playing an outdoor hockey game in front of 42,832 fans, Niklas Hjalmarsson was just glad it was all over.

“It’s been kind of a circus around here for the last couple weeks,” Hjalmarsson said.

“Can’t wait to go into the locker room and sit in the players’ lounge and not have a camera in our face.”

The circus left town Thursday night, as the Blackhawks headed back to Chicago for a return to the indoors and a return to normalcy after a gutpunch of a 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals at Nationals Park in the Winter Classic.

Former teammate Troy Brouwer scored the game-winner with 12.9 seconds left as Jonathan Toews sat in the penalty box with a scowl on his face after a hotly contested hooking call with 1:13 left in the game.

It was a ticky-tack call, but it followed a similarly weak call that went the Hawks’ way, as Matt Niskanen was sent off for boarding two minutes earlier. The Hawks couldn’t capitalize on that power play – just as they couldn’t score on a critical 91-second 5-on-3 power play in the second period – and the Hawks felt it was a makeup call. By the time Toews was called for the hook, the Hawks had six power plays, the Capitals just two.

The Winter Classic had loomed large throughout the past month or so, even as the Hawks tore through a tough schedule, going 13-2-1 leading into the game. And it was quite an event, the two teams entering the rink via an icedover “reflecting pool” in front of a fake U.S. Capitol building in center field. But once Billy Idol was done performing, and the two teams decided the sun glare was bearable, it was largely just another hockey game.

And just like in the previous three, the Hawks fell behind early. Eric Fehr pounced on a Brent Seabrook misplay at the blue line and beat Corey Crawford on a breakaway at 7:01 of the first. Five minutes later, after the teams switched sides to even out the effect of the sun, Alex Ovechkin scored on a Mike Green rebound to

make it 2-0.

But as they did Monday night against Nashville, the Hawks rallied. Patrick Sharp scored on the power play less than two minutes after Ovechkin’s goal, and Brandon Saad put in a feed from Toews to tie it 3:15 into the second period.

Toews became the all-time leading scorer in outdoor games (he’s been in three now) with two goals and three assists.

As the sun went down, the tension rose. And with Toews in the box, Ovechkin’s stick shattered and a delayed penalty was called on Saad. The momentary distraction allowed Brouwer to pick up the loose puck, wheel around and fire it past Crawford for the victory – one that still wasn’t sealed until Braden Holtby made a big kick save on Patrick Kane in the final seconds.

“The finish couldn’t have worked out any better,” Brouwer said.

Well, it could have for the Hawks. But now they get back to business as usual. And not a moment too soon.

“It’s a fun process, it was a great experience,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said.

“I think that if we could have left here with a point, we would have been a lot happier.”

Versteeg was in the slot when a shot by Washington’s Eric Fehr hit him in the left hand. He immediately left the game and went to the dressing room and didn’t return.

“We’ll know more tomorrow,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “He could be out for a bit.”

The last time Quenneville said a player would be “out for a bit” was when Patrick Sharp was injured Nov. 4 in Montreal. Sharp wound up missing five weeks.

Versteeg has nine goals and 18 assists in 33 games this season, forming a dynamic and productive second line with Brad Richards and Patrick Kane. Marcus Kruger saw time in his spot in the third period. The Hawks have Joakim Nordstrom on the roster, but also could recall a player from Rockford to replace Versteeg.

Powerless: The turning point of the game came midway through the second period, when consecutive penalties by Tom Wilson and John Carlson gave the Hawks 91 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play. They didn’t get a single shot on goal.

“That’s always – you don’t score on 5-on-3s, you generally don’t win,” Quenneville

said. “And that ended up being the result.”

A perfect microcosm of the 5-on-3 was when Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith passed it back and forth to each other several times, until Keith finally tried a one-timer, only to have his stick break.

“I just think we were waiting for the perfect chance to shoot,” Toews said. “We didn’t shoot the puck enough. … We were making the passes and being overly cautious, and we didn’t just make plays.”

Top of the chart: Toews became the all-time leading scorer in outdoor games with his assist on Brandon Saad’s second-period goal. Toews has two goals and three assists in three games. Sharp had tied him at four points (two goals, two assists) earlier in the game with his goal.

Home cooking: This was the seventh Winter Classic.

Washington is the second home team to win, and the first to do so in regulation.

“I didn’t know that stat, but with everybody’s family and friends around, it can be difficult to really focus on the game,” Fehr said. “There’s so many things going on, on the side. … I think our team handled that part of it very well.”

Sharp shooters: Sharp had 10 shots on goal, and 15 shot attempts in the game.

Alex Ovechkin had 13 shot attempts, but only four of them were on goal – including a post and a crossbar in a one-minute span early in the third period.

‘Marching along together’ in the new year I thought I had prepared for the new year. I had ordered another version of my Pekingese dog calendar for myself.

On another site I ordered a raccoon calendar for Mister Z. Not only that, I added a 12-month calendar of various zebras, which he deserved for the caring things he does. The bushy beard not withstanding.

Now I learn that my dog calendar has been canceled.

So, I propose that we scan for sweethearts – the kind who have been married 50 years or more. They are smiling and holding hands. Satisfaction and serenity emanate. No hint of any turmoil. The caption reads: “Let me call you sweetheart.”

March is the month that Caesar worried about. Lots of wind and rain.

In St. Charles the Irish and their parade loom large, so let’s get a long shot as the floats and bands progress down Main Street.

Here are some suggestions: Could the bands organize alumni participants? Uniforms not needed. Just school color ski caps.

Also, wouldn’t it be cool if various

other ethnic groups could be placed in the parade? Consider appropriate vehicles: Belgians on a giant pigeon float and Polish and Lithuanian buddies with an accordion band doing the polka. Come on, friends. What vehicles for the Germans, Swedes, Hispanics, Asians and other neighbors?

Unitarian Universalist Society brings joy to boys at youth center KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com The Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva celebrated the holiday season with boys Dec. 20 at the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles.

Continuing an annual tradition that dates back almost 25 years, 15 church members hosted a party at the center for 24 boys who don’t otherwise receive visitors during the year.

“These boys don’t have families who visit them and don’t get holiday gifts, so this party is a very special day for them – a day that shows that someone still cares,” said church member and party organizer Jean Pierce in a news release. “One boy told me, ‘I don’t know when was the last time I had a brownie.’

That really touched me and captures what this party is all about.”

Church members were joined by six members of Transitional Alternatives, an Aurora-based agency providing counseling and assistance to inmates to enable their successful transition back into society, according to the release.

Attendees enjoyed a morning of holiday treats and refreshments, and worked collaboratively on several group activities. Transitional Alternatives’ Keith Knazze spoke about the possibilities life can hold for the boys after they are released from the center.

Dear Abby: I am recently divorced and now seeing a wonderful woman who is pretty much everything I was looking for except for a couple of issues, which concern going out to eat – which we do often. Not once has she offered to pay for a meal.

I make good money, but she is not financially strapped by any means. While I can live with her not paying, what annoys me is she rarely says thank you after a dinner date.

Once, she ordered a to-go selection to take home to her daughter. I paid for it, but again got no thanks. When we arrived at her house, she gave the food to her daughter without mentioning that I had bought it for her.

Depression may be caused by several medical conditions Dear Doctor K: I’ve been feeling down and moody lately, but nothing out of the ordinary has happened in my life. And I’ve always been a happy and positive person. Could something other than depression be affecting my mood?

Dear Reader: Depression is a common problem, and it often is not recognized by either the person suffering from it or that person’s doctor. In fact, I think undiagnosed and untreated depression is one of the most important health problems in the developed nations. It generates enormous emotional suffering – on the part of the depressed person, and that person’s family, friends and co-workers. It also leads to lost productivity.

But while under-diagnosed depression is a big problem, “over-diagnosed” depression also is a problem. Mood disturbances can be caused by a variety of medical conditions or medications. Indeed, this may be true in up to 15 percent of all cases of depressed mood. When the medical condition is treated, or the medication stopped, the mood disturbance goes away.

Yet doctors sometimes misdiagnose such cases as “depression.”

Among the best-known medical conditions that can cause a depressed mood is a thyroid hormone imbalance. Too

Nutritional deficiencies, such as a lack of vitamin B12, can mimic depression. Heart disease has also been linked to depression.

The following medical conditions also are associated with mood disorders: • Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Huntington’s disease • Stroke • Certain hormone deficiencies, such as Addison’s disease • Certain immune system diseases, such as lupus • Some viruses and other infections, such as mononucleosis, hepatitis and HIV • Cancer.

Sometimes, it’s hard to tell which came first, the medical condition or the mood changes.

Each of the above conditions can cause a depressed mood, and the stress of a serious illness can trigger depression.

A doctor can help tease out whether mood changes occurred on their own, were caused by a medical illness or were the result of the medical illness. To

do so, he or she will consider your medical history and the results of a physical exam and other tests.

If depression springs from an underlying medical problem, the mood changes should disappear after the medical condition is treated. But in many cases, though the episode may be triggered by the medical illness, the depression becomes an independent problem. Therefore, treatment must also address the depression directly.

Medications can also cause a depressed mood by directly impacting brain circuits that regulate mood. On my website, AskDoctorK.com, I’ve put a detailed list of the medicines that most often affect a person’s mood.

Your doctor can help sort out whether a new medication, a change in dose or drug interactions might be causing your problems. Or whether, like millions of other people, you are suffering from depression.

Insurance companies set their rates to compensate for the percentage of accidents a group has.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration reported the drivers between the ages of 16 to 24 (the youngest age group) had the highest percentage of accidents and were involved in 16.7 percent of fatal alcohol-related collisions in 2013.

Three major factors that plague younger drivers are the lack of driver experience, thinking they are invincible and youthful exuberance.

Many insurance companies refuse to insure young drivers regardless of their excellent driving record.

The winner of the Richard Freeman Junior Deal of the Year award from the International Bridge Press Association last October was Bob Donkersloot, a 19-year-old from the Netherlands.

Donkersloot (South) was in four spades. After West led the diamond nine, what did declarer do?

In the auction, North’s fourclub rebid showed four-card spade support, at least game-going values and some sort of club control.

Donkersloot realized that he needed the trump finesse to work and that the opening lead had to be a singleton. (West would have led the jack or ace if he held a doubleton.) So there was a risk that East would take dummy’s diamond queen with his ace and give his partner a diamond ruff. Then a heart shift through dummy’s king, with East holding the ace, would give the defenders the first four tricks. Was there any way to divert the apparent destiny of the contract?

Donkersloot found a fantastic play at trick one – he called for a low diamond from the dummy.

East automatically won with his jack and cashed the diamond ace.

West, not smelling a rodent, did not ruff and shift to a heart. And then the contract could not be defeated.

South won East’s club switch in the dummy, discarded a heart on the second high club and conceded a heart. A moment later, declarer ruffed a heart in his hand, took the trump finesse, drew trumps and claimed.

Now to come clean. This clever play proved unnecessary at the table because West held the heart ace. The contract was unbeatable.

But that does not detract from Donkersloot’s imaginative play.
