Freezing temps welcome 2014

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com The Chicago-metro area, including Kane County, is headed for a deep freeze this week and through the beginning of next week, as Arctic cold fronts move in, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

Lake effect snow is expected today but more toward Chicago, said meteorologist Ben Deubelbeiss at the weather service’s Romeoville office.

“We’re forecasting a pretty intense band of lake effect snow, so if you’re traveling to the city, it’s not the best day for it,” Deubelbeiss said.

“We’re not anticipating anything that far west. If anything, it will be just light snow, nothing significant.”

But behind that weather

system will be frigid temperatures hitting the area starting tonight, he said.

“You’re looking at low temperatures through Friday morning of 12 and 13 degrees below zero with wind chills of 20 below zero,” Deubelbeiss said. “Friday temperatures will rebound into the low teens, but another cold front will come through on the weekend.”

Saturday will see another rebound into the low 30s with a light accumulation of snow, Deubelbeiss said, but temperatures will fall through the night and during the day Sunday to 8 or 9 degrees below zero.

The cold will persist in the single digits through Monday and Tuesday.

“It will be a very, very cold start to the new year,” Deubelbeiss said.

Fresh D’Lite closes

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After three and a half years of serving up fresh, low-fat, low-salt, healthy fare, Fresh D’Lite at Geneva Commons closed Tuesday.

Owner Paul Chaudury said he would be looking to relocate under another name in Chicago, Naperville, Oak Brook, Schaumburg – and possibly in downtown St. Charles.

“Fresh and low fat – that is our concept,” Chaudury said.

“Our learning was that America wants healthy food, but it must taste the best with fresh exciting flavors … we’re dialing up the flavor.”

Chaudury said his restaurant had the lowest salt level, 450 milligrams per meal, whereas most restaurants have 3,000 milligrams. And its entire menu featured items under 550 calories.

Although the restaurant sold 200 to 300 meals a day

“We want to do much bigger volume. If we go to Chicago, we can put one [restaurant] in every block.”

“After three and a half years, we learned so much.

We have learned that customers love our food,” he said. “Once you like this kind of food, you want to repeat all the time. But there is not enough population in Geneva like other cities. We want to do much bigger volume. If we go to Chicago, we can put one [restaurant] in every block.”

Chaudury said he had previously worked for Sara Lee and Con Agra for 20 years.

Brazill to retire from Arden Courts of Geneva

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Sharon Brazill, marketing director for Arden Courts of Geneva, an Alzheimer’s and dementia facility, will retire as of Friday, the company announced.

Brazill, who also is a Geneva Township trustee, has worked for Arden Courts since 2000, said executive director Pam Sebern.

“She started as administrative services coordinator when there was a trailer on an empty lot,” Sebern said.

Arden Courts changed part of its descriptive name to Memory Care Community about 18 months ago because

But there are countless others she’s talked to who have never moved into the building. If they cannot afford private pay, she has done referrals.”

Pam Sebern, executive director at Arden Courts of Geneva it serves people with all types of dementia, not just Alzheimer’s, Sebern said.

But there are countless others she’s talked to who have never moved into the building. If they cannot afford private pay, she has done referrals.”

Sebern said Brazill is wellknown for her expertise in helping families with demen-

tia and said “she’ll be sitting in a restaurant and someone will come up to her, asking questions.”

While Brazill is retiring from her full-time job at Arden Courts, Sebern said Brazill told her she will continue her work as a township trustee, with the Geneva Senior Center, on the Elderday Center board in Batavia, and with Central Kane County TRIAD, a cooperative of local police and of Geneva Township that works to help reduce crimes against the elderly.

Brazill could not be reached for comment.

Geneva Library Board expected to OK hiring of director’s adviser

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Library Board will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. today at 127 James St., where trustees are expected to approve the hiring of a temporary adviser to the director.

According to the agenda, the board is expected to take action after a closed session for personnel.

Board member Steve Andersson said that he expected the board majority would approve a contract with a person who would be an adviser to the library director, Matt Teske.

Teske was on personal leave for about a month,

from mid-November to Dec. 16, but now has returned, according to his voice mail.

“This would be for general advice on the continuing management of the library,” Andersson said. “Why? We are always looking for ways to continue to improve the library.”

Andersson said he did not know how much the temporary adviser would be paid, nor how long the person was to serve.

Board President Esther Steel did not return a voice mail message seeking comment.

Last month, the board had considered, then rejected, appointing an interim director during Teske’s absence.

Keeping streets clear of snow and ice requires more than salt and plows.

Those who help keep roadways clear in and around the Tri-Cities say other factors – including road temperature and the timing of predicted snow – affect their plans.

“The key to us fighting the winter season is that we realize each event is unique, and we adapt our strategy to that event,” said Chris Adesso, public services manager for the city of St. Charles.

For Elburn, which is limited by equipment and manpower, plowing snow becomes a timing issue, said John Nevenhoven, public works supervisor.

“If we have a half inch, it doesn’t make sense to mobilize everyone,” he said, noting he can put seven trucks on the road at once.

With heavier snowfalls, Nevenhoven said, his team will consider the anticipated start time, its expected duration and when it will be the most intense. Units are deployed accordingly, he said.

He prefers snowfalls that are shorter in duration than those lasting several hours because he only has one set of drivers, he said.

After eight, nine or 10 hours, he said, “I have to pull them off the street.”

Other than applying road salt when ice is expected, Elburn doesn’t have equipment to pretreat streets, Nevenhoven said.

St. Charles, however, can pretreat roads with brine – a mixture of salt, water and a commercial product that lowers the temperature range for which the brine is effective – several days before a snowstorm, but only in certain conditions, Adesso said.

The substance isn’t used when rain is forecasted, when pavement temperatures are

Three vehicles can apply brine, which is put on as many streets as possible, Adesso said, noting they almost always start with the main thoroughfares.

“It helps prevent a bonding of snow to the pavement sur-

face so we can actually plow it off,” he said.

In Geneva, the city has 12 large trucks with plows and salting capabilities and 10 smaller trucks with plows to supplement the larger trucks, communications coordinator Kevin Stahr said.

He said Geneva uses rock salt pre-wetted with liquid cal-

cium chloride.

“That is the equivalent of putting salt on steroids to make it work right away and melt the snow and ice,” Stahr said. “It also reduces the need for frequently repeated applications.”

Plowing begins once snow accumulations reach one inch, Stahr said. And, like other communities, he said, Geneva concentrates its snow removal efforts on more heavily traveled roads before moving to secondary streets, such as alleys and cul-de-sacs.

Stahr said residents can report any plowing or salting concerns through the “Report a Concern” link on the city’s website, www.geneva.il.us.

“Our requests are monitored on a regular basis, espe-

cially when facing a storm or special situation,” Stahr said.

Adesso said the St. Charles Public Works Department staff takes pride in the road conditions it is providing the city.

“It’s important to note that there’s a really thought-out process here at public works when it comes to snow removal,” Adesso said.

New, familiar faces populate GOP ballot for governor

By STEPHEN DiBENEDETTO sdibenedetto@shawmedia.com After the holidays, Illinois voters will be treated to another dizzying season – one that involves campaign ads, stump speeches and soundbites.

The March primary season has arrived. Republican voters in Kane County will soon decide a challenger to Gov. Pat Quinn from a crowded field of new and familiar faces. Elections generally favor incumbents, but many view Quinn as vulnerable since he narrowly won his first full term as governor in 2010.

With a legislature dominated by Democrats, Republicans also are eager to send their first candidate back to the governor’s mansion since former Gov. George Ryan left embroiled in scandal in 2003 that eventually sent him to prison.

Here’s a look at the four Republican candidates on the March 18 primary ballot vying to challenge Quinn in November.

State Sen. Bill Brady, R-Bloomington The downstate Republican came close to defeating Quinn in 2010, losing by roughly 32,000 votes. Brady won 98 of the state’s 102 counties but lost the most populous one – Cook County, State Sen. a t r a d i t i o n a l Bill Brady stronghold for R-Bloomington Democrats.

The state’s poor economic health and Quinn’s income tax hike support all favorably carried Brady into the final moments of the 2010 campaign. But Quinn’s campaign turned voters’ attention to Brady’s social conservatism, a political philosophy that doesn’t play well with some right-centered suburban voters.

Brady in this campaign has shied away from his socially conservative positions on issues such as abortion and gun control, and has focused on the state’s economy and financial health. He also

helped the recent pension reform deal pass the Illinois Senate.

On his campaign website, Brady indicates he would strictly cut government spending to try and balance Illinois’ budget. He would let the 2011 temporary income tax increase expire in 2015, an issue expected to dominate the gubernatorial race.

Brady first launched a bid for governor in 2006, finishing third in the Republican primary. The 52-year-old Bloomington native also helps run the family’s real estate business that has financially struggled since the economic recession.

State Sen. Kirk Dillard, R-Hinsdale The chief of staff to former Gov. Jim Edgar narrowly lost a chance to compete against Quinn.

Brady defeated the DuPage County senator by a mere 193 votes in the GOP primary four years ago. State Sen. Dillard will Kirk Dillard t r y t o r i g h t R-Hinsdale his campaign in 2014, but he already has a messaging issue. Dillard voted against the brokered pension reform in December, while his running mate, Sen. Jill Tracy, R-Quincy, voted for it.

Primary opponents have yet to seize on the inconsistency between the Dillard ticket, but the pension deal for candidates on both sides will likely be a reoccurring issue throughout the election.

Dillard, 58, brings decades of political experience as a statewide candidate, having served policy roles for both Edgar and former Gov. Jim Thompson. A Republican statehouse leader, Dillard has served 20 years in the Senate.

Dillard’s campaign focuses on economic and budget issues, according to his website. His “Destination Illinois” plan would make Illinois business friendly and shrink the scope of state government – all positions that resonate with typical Repub-

lican voters.

State Treasurer Dan Rutherford The Pontiac native is the only GOP candidate to hold statewide office, winning the race for treasurer in 2010 over Democratic candidate Robin Kelly.

Quick to tout his accom- Dan p l i s h m e n t s , Rutherford R u t h e r f o r d State treasurer appeared to be plotting a governor run after his 2010 victory. But he encountered early problems in the treasurer’s office, primarily with the botched promotion of the Bright Star college savings program.

He also faced criticism when thousands of recipients from a different college savings program received mailers with their Social Security numbers printed on the front.

Rutherford has tried to make a name as a taxpayer steward, cutting equipment and supplies while in office.

Rutherford has focused his

2014 campaign on the state’s fiscal woes while highlighting his statewide executive experience.

The son of pizza shop owners, Rutherford often mentions how he worked as a child and into college, graduating without any student loan debt.

He worked at ServiceMaster Company for 25 years, before retiring in 2010.

Venture capitalist Bruce Rauner The wealthy businessman from Winnetka spent big money ($1.5 million) on early TV ads this holiday season to introduce himself to Illinois voters.

As a firsttime candidate with deep Bruce Rauner pockets, Raun- Venture er has branded capitalist himself a political outsider, who will challenge the Springfield status quo and public unions in the mold of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

He also launched a ballot initiative to create term limits through a constitutional

amendment.

Rauner recently started a “Hammer and Shake” website and social media campaign that emphasizes his promises to hammer out the special interests in Illinois government and shake up Springfield.

But Rauner also has avoided talking in detail about his work as a venture capitalist.

His recently disclosed federal income tax returns show that he made $53 million in 2012 from various hedge funds and business partnerships.

Rauner’s business dealings at the Chicago-based private equity firm GTCR also helped Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel earn millions, after Emanuel left the Clinton administration to become an investment banker. The two have remained friends.

Going forward, Rauner likely will use his large war chest to increase his recognition with suburban and downstate Republican voters, while his primary rivals hammer away at his political inexperience and ties to powerful Chicago Democrats.

McArdle, founder of Pheasant Run, dies at age 88 ST. CHARLES – Edward McArdle, the man whose vision brought Pheasant Run Resort to St. Charles about 50 years ago, died at home in St. Charles on Monday. He was 88.

The family moved from North Riverside to Oak Brook in 1964. In 1979, Carl and Frances retired to the St. Charles area. For the last eight years she enjoyed living at Carriage Oaks in St. Charles. As a devoted family man, he enjoyed watching his sons participate in school sports. He was instrumental in organizing the Batavia Youth Baseball program.

He enjoyed his retirement years, spending special times with his wife, sons and beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For many years, he attended Bethel Baptist Church in St. Charles, where he served as a deacon.

He was a member of the Batavia VFW Post #1197.

He is survived by his three sons, Gary (Dee) Ritchason, Terry (Beth) Ritchason and Byron (Lisa) Ritchason, all of Batavia; seven grandchildren, Tracy, Lisa, Jenny, Neil, T.J., Kara and Danny; and four great-grandchildren Zachary, Katy, Alex and Sam. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia.

McArdle also owned other properties in Illinois, Florida and the Virgin Islands. Norris said McArdle owned the Wagon Wheel in Rockton, Ill., the Royal Orleans in New Orleans and bought the old Dallas airport for a fleet of planes he leased out.

“He was a very unique, special person,” Norris said.

“He was not all roses. He had a very strong personality [and] would raise his voice regularly with people he would be negotiating with. He’d pound on the table. He was always wheeling and dealing. It was an experience to know him.”

“He wanted to disconnect from St. Charles and be in DuPage County,” Norris said.

Closing a food stamp loophole THE WASHINGTON POST “Heat and eat” sounds like the instructions on a package of microwaveable noodles.

Recently, however, the phrase has taken on new significance as the nickname for a loophole in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, that costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars each year – and gives an otherwise vital component of the social safety net a black eye.

SNAP benefits vary according to a recipient’s monthly income and expenses. If you can document costs for utilities such as heating, your benefits go up accordingly.

However, some recipients have no utility bills, since the cost is included in their rent. In such cases, the rules allow states to factor in a payment from the federal Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program in lieu of a utility bill.

And a LIHEAP payment of as little as $1 a year can leverage significant extra food stamp payments. So more than a dozen states and the District of Columbia have adopted the practice of issuing token LIHEAP payments to food stamp applicants

– heat and eat.

While technically legal and undoubtedly well-intended, this maneuver results in many people receiving money based on utility expenses they did not actually incur.

To be sure, SNAP benefits hardly pay for a luxury diet, and current law calls for the total cost of the benefits to decline from $76 billion in fiscal 2013 to $65 billion in 2023.

Yet at a time when the Republican-controlled House already is calling for nearly $40 billion in cuts to SNAP over the next decade, heat and eat looks less like a clever way to help the poor and more like a political gift to SNAP’s perennial opponents.

A proposal under discussion by House and Senate farm-bill negotiators would curtail this misuse of SNAP at a savings of $8 billion over the next decade. Basically, the plan would establish a minimum LIHEAP payment – $20 a year – to qualify for enhanced benefits, which is more than the states that currently play the heat-and-eat game would be willing to pay.

Only 4 percent of all SNAP families would see a benefit reduction; crucially, none would lose basic eligibility.

14 things I am looking forward to in 2014 When discussing vacation plans, holidays and ugly sweaters in AP lit, my teacher reminded us that, as seniors, we would be entering the calendar year that would bring one of the biggest changes of our lives.

We all got quiet, some a little freaked out, others excited and ready to start anew. I have to admit, I’m partial to the first group, but I know that this year will be great no matter what happens!

Here are some things that will surely leave their mark on 2014: 1. Starting college.

Enough said.

2. The return of “Downton Abbey.” I’ve got my DVR set

and the tea water boiling.

Will you bring the biscuits?

3. My band trip to Kansas.

Even though Kansas isn’t the coolest locale, a long weekend hanging out with friends, listening to – and playing – great music will be a blast. Insane amounts of barbecue, coffee and ChapStick will be consumed.

4. Continuing to live longer than the Mayans predicted. We made it past 2012 and through 2013, so there’s no stopping us now!

5. Justin Bieber’s retirement. Long rumored and well deserved. Maybe he’ll find some time to shop for belts or actually learn how to sing.

6. Wearing my marching

Just one more parade on St. Patrick’s Day! I will miss making plume jokes, but I think I’ll survive.

10. That T-shirt quilt my mom has promised me. An Ackerman family tradition upon high school graduation, my sisters’ were almost done at this point. Mine has yet to be started, and I’ll definitely need a blanket in my dorm.

11. New mall in STC – so long, Charlestowne; hello, Quad. This facelift can’t come fast enough.

12. Turning 18. I’ll win the

biggest lottery in history on my first try, I can just feel it.

13. Graduating high school. Never again will I be forced to be around so many yoga pants and iPhones in one enclosed space.

14. Buying more shoes – a new year brings 365 more days that I will have to wear shoes. Old ones will wear out, and new ones will have to replace them. It’s a sacrifice we all must face.

‘Guitar Chief’ helping supply instruments to children

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jerry Gendron of St. Charles remembers when he picked up a guitar as a kid – he had to overcome strings that were too high on the neck for his smaller hands, as well as play through bloody blisters on his fingers.

“I know that’s enough to discourage younger players who don’t have what it takes to overcome that difficulty,” he said.

So, he decided to start restoring guitars to make them easier for younger musicians to play. Through his eBay website, and Facebook page, titled “Guitar Chief,” Gendron has been selling and marketing restored guitars that are more affordable for families with children who want a guitar that’s manageable for younger musicians to play.

“I clean them up, buff them, polish them, put new strings on them, straighten the neck,” he said. “Every one of them is different. I put them in a condition that, for less money than a brand new one, the guitar [is] going to play better than a brand new one.”

Gendron, who by day is a financial advisor in Geneva, said he uses the funds from his restored guitar and string instrument sales to purchase other instruments to restore or donate to music programs in the Geneva, Batavia and St. Charles school districts.

Gendron said he’s contacted 80 band, jazz band, orchestra and choir teachers in Tri-Cities school districts in hopes of working with them in the future to coordinate instrument donations or to offer more affordable instruments to children whose families may not have the budget to buy or rent them brand new.

Proceeds also go toward donating instruments to Tri-Cities school districts.

The idea to restore instruments came when his daughter started playing violin. He said instead of spending hundreds of dollars to purchase a new violin, he purchased one for $50 that he was able to restore.

He said in some cases, it costs a family $300 to $400 just to rent a violin each year. He plans to donate 15 restored vi-

olins to Anderson Elementary School and Lincoln Elementary School in St. Charles.

“I’m set up to donate instruments where there’s a need,” he said.

Gendron said in addition to restoring and donating string instruments, he acts as an adviser for families who have nev-

er purchased a musical instrument before and may need some guidance in learning what to buy. He said most families will need to spend at least a few hundred dollars for a guitar that’s playable for younger musicians without any adjustments.

“There’s gotta be a lot of musicians, or potential musicians,

that could really blossom if they could overcome the instrument they’re playing on,” he said. “Unfortunately, so many of these instruments are blown out of the factory without any quality control.”

Gendron said both his love of music and working as a mentor through his alma mater, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, inspired the move to restore, sell and donate used instruments. He said especially with the recession, many families might struggle to afford instruments.

“Music has brought so much joy in my life,” he said. “What a shame for somebody not to have that same experience.”

Voca People, an ensemble performing vocal theater that combines a cappella and beat box vocals to create the sounds of an orchestra, will perform the day after Poi Dog, on Saturday, April 19.

“They are aliens from the planet Voca, and they don’t talk using words; everything is musical expression,” Jarvis said, adding that the group will reproduce songs by musicians Madonna and Queen without the use of musical instruments.

RiverEdge Park’s season will kick off in June with a craft beer festival. It will announce its concert tour lineup at the end of February.

The types of acts to be expected during RiverEdge Park’s second season include country rock, pop rock and “giant, classic rock headliners,” said Jarvis, who also does marketing for RiverEdge.

Similar to last year, the Blues on the Fox festival – Friday, June 27, and Saturday, June 28 – will kick off the concert schedule.

The focus, this year, also is being spent on widening the array of offered events to families and couples, Jarvis said.

The “Grease” sing-a-long movie in the park will make a comeback this season, with a

new addition to the mix – the cult classic “Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

“Last year, we had ‘Grease’ movies in the park, and, like, 1,000 people showed up … lots of people showed up in costumes,” Jarvis said.

Jarvis said between RiverEdge Park and Paramount Theatre more than 300,000 people visited downtown Aurora last year, “and [2014] should be an even bigger year.”

“It’s an exciting time,” he said.

On the theater front, Albright Theatre in Batavia will round out its 40th anniversary 2013-14 season in June.

As an ode to Albright’s history in performance art, box office manager Jeannine Collins said, “We [chose] six shows [and] of the six shows, five of them were things that had been done over our 40 [years].”

The remaining shows of the season include the MA-rated drama “Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf” running Saturday, Feb. 15, through Tuesday, March 15; the comedy “The Curious Savage” running Friday, May 2, through Saturday, May 17; and “Love Rides the Rails” running Friday, June 13, through Saturday, June 28.

The dawn of a new year also brings a fresh lineup of entertainment.

Concerts with band Cheap Trick and actor/musician Kevin Costner are just a couple of the headlining tours coming through Kane County in 2014, but it’s an act that has yet to be revealed that could garner the most attention.

“We’ve got an artist who is big enough that we’re bringing them in for seven consecutive days of shows, and we will probably sell out every single show,” said Jim Jarvis, vice president of marketing for Aurora’s Paramount Theatre.

Jarvis said performances will take place in late August, and the artist’s identity will be unveiled Saturday, March 1.

The Paramount Theatre also will present its next big Broadway show, “42nd Street,” which tells the story of a small-town girl who moves to New York City to make it big on Broadway. “[The show] has a big, giant orchestra … nobody does that,” Jarvis said, adding that it also features the biggest tap number in Broadway history.

“We have like 29 cast members, and each cast member has six pairs of dance shoes now. It’s huge. It’s a family show, and it has a great message.” “ 4 2 nd S t r e e t ” o p e n s Wednesday, Jan. 15, and runs through Sunday, Feb. 9.

choice of French or sweet potato fries, baked broccoli or cole slaw.

Seasoned with a cinnamon, vanilla, sugar and caramel salt spice blend, the sweet potato fries were excellently executed, offering a tinge of sweetness that, rounded out the saltiness perfectly.

My dining companion, who was thrilled she had the option to order vegetables to accompany her burger, felt inclined to order the Blues burger ($12), a delicate layering of sautéed

Of the many blue-cheesecentric burgers my dining companion has sampled at other establishments, she said Prime Bistro was one of the few that actually uses bluecheese crumbles – and not just the dressing. A small attention

to detail not lost on her.

We ordered the Cali Fries – which pay homage to the owner’s California roots – although they are nowhere near as healthy as one would imagine a California-inspired dish to be. A thick layer of tangy Thousand Island dressing and shredded cheese covered the salted fries, which were

intertwined with grilled onions and topped with crunchy green onions. We devoured the dish in minutes, not because there weren’t enough for two ravenous diners but because of the combination of flavors that made my taste buds sing.

Prime Bistro offers another French-fry infused dish – the Honey Sweet Potato, which is sprinkled with cinnamon, brown sugar and doused in honey.

The bistro also serves up appetizers or bar food for sports fanatics wanting to munch while taking in a game.

Options include an assortment of flavored wings, such as garlic butter, hot, ranch and barbecue; beer-battered onion rings, mozzarella sticks; and jalapeño poppers. All orders can be made in half or full sizes.

In addition, Dakan – having owned a pizzeria in California – offers a bevy of flatbread pizza options, including Hawaiian, Buffalo Chicken, Meat Lover and Chili Cheese Fries pizza, to name a few.

The restaurant was empty for lunch on Dec. 20, but it may have something to do with the turnover of the building and, possibly, its location. It’s seated on the outskirts of St. Charles’ main drag and hasn’t updated its signage just yet.

But give this place a chance. Whether it’s pub grub on game day, lunch with friends or taking advantage of half-price burger Mondays, Prime Bistro’s burgers are worth sinking your teeth into.

ST. CHARLES – The Prime Bistro logo depicts a plump patty nestled between two buns with a steak knife holding it all together. Its concept is clear – burgers are the specialty.

Formerly River Rockhouse, Prime Bistro is a sports bar and burger joint with a selection of flatbread pizzas, sandwiches and salads.

The sprawling space is anchored by a hive of flat-screen TVs surrounded by a colossal bar. Reclaimed wooden planks scaling the interior walls give the lofty space a rich and textured contrast to the sleek bar top and soft, cushy booths. The square footage continues onto the covered back patio, which is great for dining al fresco during the warmer months.

The burgers are assembled using grass-fed beef, which is apparently half the cholesterol of a normal burger and also houses some of the “good” fatty acids found in olive oil, Prime Bistro owner Matt Dakan stated in a previous story the Kane County Chronicle published when the restaurant first opened in September.

The burgers are half-priced all day long Mondays, and there are plenty of crafty combinations from which to choose. The Cali burger comes with avocado, Swiss cheese, mixed greens, tomato and ranch; The Cowboy comes topped with onion rings, Applewood bacon, cheddar cheese and is smothered in barbecue sauce; and the Oooo it’s Hot! comes with Monterey Jack, pickled jalapeños, grilled onions and jalapeño cream cheese poppers, to name a few.

I narrowed in on the Mushroom Swiss burger ($12), which comes stacked with a heaping pile of sautéed mushrooms atop a melty, Swiss cheese-layered burger patty. The bun is buttered and spends a little time on the grill itself, giving its edges a slight charcoaled crunch to each succulent bite. As advertised in the logo, the burger came skewered with a steak knife.

Career Development Services helps students find their destination Sometimes deciding on a career path is not as easy as it seems, especially for college students. It is important for students to understand that choosing a major or a career is not an event, but a developmental process. At Elgin Community College, we like to encourage our students to make the Office of Career Development Services one of their first stops on campus.

Being a student is stressful enough. We want to help take the stress out of choosing a major by providing students with the services and resources they need.

Our students can expect to receive career counseling, which includes assessments and career exploration, as well as assistance with job search skills, such as résumé writing, interviewing skills, and assistance with their internship and job search.

We understand the importance of working with each student starting the first day they step on campus. We teach students how to set academic and career goals, and create a plan that will ensure they reach those goals. By developing a relationship, our students know their success is our goal, too. Like most community colleges, most of our services are free.

With the ever changing demands of our economy, keeping up with industry expectations is crucial.

United Center game against Geneva to begin challenging stretch

T

he Kaneland boys basketball team heads into Saturday’s matchup against Geneva at the United Center on a high note.

The Knights (7-3) dropped their first game of the Plano Christmas Classic, but then strung together three consecutive wins to earn a ninth-place finish at the tournament. More importantly, however, Kaneland built momentum heading into a tough stretch of its schedule.

Coach Brian Johnson structured the schedule to match his team up against some of the top competition in the area.

“We’re gonna have a good test here on Saturday against Geneva, who’s in my opinion one of the better teams in the state of Illinois,” Johnson said. “And then you throw on top of that Morris who’s going to be in the championship [at Plano] and then Burlington Central, after that, who’s in the final four.

We’ve got a tough schedule, and it was made that way for a purpose.”

The matchup against Geneva (12-3), which will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Center, was a long time in the making. Johnson, who is in his fifth season as Kaneland’s coach, jumped at the opportunity to play at the venue.

“My first year, we did the same thing with [Geneva], and then with the conference change and their schedule, we kind of delayed it,” Johnson said. “Then last year, (Geneva coach) Phil (Ralston) approached me about playing the game, so it was a no-brainer.”

Johnson knows his team will have their hands full with a tough Geneva team that is coming off a tournament championship at the East Aurora Holiday Tournament.

Senior forward John Pruett is looking forward to renewing the old Western Sun Conference rivalry. He said the team has been looking forward to the game all year, both because of the opponent and the change of scenery.

“We used to play Geneva,” Pruett said. “They were our rival. Geneva is a premier team in the area and the state.”

The rivalry game will be further amplified by the

opportunity to play on NBA hardwood.

“I’ve been ]to the United Center] before for a (Bulls) game and it’s crazy,” Pruett said. “I could only imagine how it’s going to be playing on the court.”

Pruett has to wait a few more days before the dream of competing at the arena will become a reality.

Johnson views the game as a strong step for Kaneland’s basketball program.

“It’s cool, the kids love it,” Johnson said. “My goal this year was to bump up our schedule and do some things

that were neat that the kids can remember.”

Given the way the two teams have been playing as of late, the matchup is looking like it will be a memorable one.

Pruett, along with senior guard Ty Carlson, have emerged as leaders for a Kaneland team that has had to play recently without guard Dylan Vaca and 6-foot5 center Jacob Gomes, both out with injuries.

Johnson hopes to have Vaca (wrist) and Gomes (ankle) back by the end of the month.

In the meantime, Pruett, Carlson and Co. will look to build on their final three games at Plano and establish a consistent high level of play, something Johnson said the Knights have been lacking.

Johnson hopes that his team will recognize Saturday’s game as a model for how the postseason games will shape up.

“We’re trying to get a regional atmosphere,” Johnson said. “Granted, the United Center’s not going to be packed, but it’s still a big gym. It’s going to be an awesome experience, the boys are all excited about it.”

ON CAMPUS Dennis D. Jacobs played only 16 minutes before re-injuring the meniscus. She decided to take a medical redshirt for the season to allow the knee to fully heal.

“I think that was the best decision I could have made because I needed that extra time to get the knee where it is now,” Yelle said. “Knock on wood, I haven’t had a problem with it this year. It’s feeling as good as it ever had.”

She said the only physical problem the knee has given her is occasional stiffness after games. The point guard has been productive, averaging seven points and three rebounds a game while shooting 52 percent from the field, including 55 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.

“The season started out pretty well for us,” Yelle says. “We won our first three games. We hit a rough patch for awhile now. We’re trying to get into the right mindset and start winning again.”

“I think it’s just getting back into the swing of things,” she said. “Each game I feel like I’m improving.”

The uncertainty Yelle felt heading into the season was increased by a change in coaching staffs, but Yelle said the transition has gone well after the Bobcats fired Semeka Randall on March 11.

“I really enjoy playing for this coaching staff. I think they’re going to do great things for the program,” she said. “I was ready for the change. I think the program needed a better fit. … I was definitely apprehensive about it at the same time because I had hardly played.”

New coach Bob Boldon came to Ohio after three years at Youngstown State, where he transformed a team that had gone 0-30 in the season before his arrival into a squad that went 23-10 in his third season at the helm.

After missing much of her freshman season and virtually all of last season because of injury, Kat Yelle wasn’t going to waste any time getting into the action this season for the Ohio University women’s basketball team.

The 5-foot-7 guard from Geneva scored nine seconds into the Bobcats’ season opener against Xavier.

“That was a great feeling,” Yelle said. “[Coach Bob Boldon] drew that play up … for me to post up the girl who was guarding me, who was like 5-3.”

Yelle said scoring right away helped calm her nerves.

“I was definitely nervous for the first game,” she said.

“I truly hadn’t played in a full game since my freshman year and it was very nerve-wracking.”

Yelle started the first 11 games of her freshman campaign for Ohio, but her season was cut short by a torn ACL and meniscus in her right knee. Last season, she

New coach looks to turn Ohio around after stint at Youngstown St. • YELLE Continued from page 21 “Our new coach, he’s really positive with us,” Yelle said. “To me, being a player here the past two years with a different coach, they’re just two different styles. The big difference is his positivity.”

The rebuilding job Boldon faces at Ohio is perhaps only slightly less daunting than the task he had at Youngstown State. The Bobcats were 6-23 overall last season and won just one league game in 16 tries.

Yelle said turning the program into a winning one Kat Yelle won’t be easy for Boldon or the players, but she has faith it can happen in her remaining time at the school.

“I think we can be great this year,” she said. “We’ve got to come together as a team and really focus on all the little things – rebounding, cutting down turnovers.”

The Bobcats gained some valuable experience this season with nonconference games against a pair of teams ranked in the top ten nationally – Louisville and Maryland. The Cardinals blew out Ohio, 90-33, on Nov.

21 in Louisville. Yelle said the Bobcats were too much in awe of the competition and the environment at the start of that contest.

“It hit us at the end of the game, we finally started getting out of that shock and awe factor,” she said. “It made playing Maryland easier. …We thought we could play with them and we did for awhile in the first half.

I thought we played great, actually.”

The Bobcats played even with the Terrapins for the first 10 minutes of the game before Maryland pulled away for an 84-60 victory.

That game was part of the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico on Thanksgiving weekend.

“The Puerto Rico trip was a blast. The first day we got there we went to a rain forest,” Yelle said. “Puerto Rico was actually very enjoyable. We got some time on the beach … It was like a vacation with basketball.”

After two years of disappointment, Yelle certainly deserves to start enjoying her college basketball career.

NOTEWORTHY Cadets go deep at Dvorak Ten of the 12 Marmion wrestlers who entered the Dvorak Tournament at Machesney Park Harlem this past weekend were place-winners.

“Everybody scored points for us. That was a big accomplishment and we’re very happy with that,” Cadets coach Ryan Cumbee said.

“Everything is preparation for the big state tournament, and this is a great test, being one of the toughest tournaments in Illinois.”

Senior 126-pounder Johnny Jimenez, a St. Charles resident, paced the Cadets’ third-place team finish with a breezy run to the title. He scored two technical falls and two major decisions in his four bouts, including

a major-decision victory against Glenbard North’s Jon Marmolejo in the title match.

Jimenez, a Wisconsin recruit who is pursuing his fourth state title, entered the weekend with three losses as the Cadets continue a daunting schedule that includes challenging tournaments throughout the midwest.

“The kid’s not used to losing,” Cumbee said, “so for him to come back and dominate the way he did at Dvorak was quite impressive.”

Marmion’s other top placers included runners-up Anthony Bosco (113) and Nathan Traxler (182) and third-place finishers Trace Carello (152) and Nick Ferraro (170).

The Cadets still are waiting to field a full lineup. Talented sophomore Riley DeMoss

is out for the season, while classmates Mikey Callahan (132) and Lucas Warren (220) also are working back from injuries.

Jahns returned to Kaneland’s mat room and has said he does not intend to remain as coach beyond this season.

Semper fight Hello, old friend Saturday’s dual between visiting Kaneland and Plano will reunite Knights coach Monty Jahns with former assistant and pupil Jeremy Kenny.

Jahns presumably transferred control of the program to Kenny, a fellow former Knight, when Jahns retired as coach in March. Kenny later was recommended and accepted as Jahns’ successor, but ultimately left for an opportunity as a three-sport Plano assistant (football, wrestling, track) when he gained full-time employment in District 88.

Geneva junior 170-pounder Austin Chaon has tangled with a few former Vikings during winter break, as high school, college and military intercessions overlap.

Yes, one of Chaon’s recent practice partners is Geneva alumnus Mike Villanueva, now a Marine.

“Oh, yeah. He’s a lot more built than he was,” Chaon said. “He doesn’t look too different [otherwise].”

East coach Jason Potter called the move an investment for the future from the start, but the team’s present at Dvorak wasn’t too shabby.

Bears’ final loss elicits special kind of hurt CHICAGO – Losing hurts.

But losing to the Green Bay Packers? In the final minute?

To end your season?

That’s a whole ’nother level of sports heartbreak. And it happened to the Bears. At the hands of the Packers. Again.

No wonder the Soldier Field speakers blared a sad song in the waning moments of the Bears’ 33-28 loss to their oldest rivals. The outcome lifted the Packers into the playoffs as NFC North champions, while the Bears turned to face a painful offseason that could include many difficult personnel changes.

The lyrics filled the ears of stunned fans after the Packers’ game-winning score.

“You had a bad day,” echoed the song by Daniel Powter. “The camera don’t lie.

You’re coming back down, and you don’t really mind. You had

a bad day. You had a bad day.”

For the Bears, it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

Any football fan will tell you that the line between winning and losing is razor thin. One ill-timed mistake can separate contenders from pretenders in the NFL. That’s why it was tough to see Bears general manager Phil Emery make the rounds in a quiet locker room after the game. One by one, Emery visited with his players, placing an arm on their shoulder and offering some brief words of encouragement.

Some Bears players were so upset that they had not yet removed their pads more than 20 minutes after the final whistle. Others were so distraught that they leaned forward and braced themselves against their lockers, heads down, eyes shut.

VIEWS Tom Musick Bears linebacker Lance Briggs wanted to escape. With his stare fixed on the carpet, he pulled a rolling suitcase and refused to stop and speak with reporters.

Other players spoke softly about narrowly losing a winner-take-all game.

“This is going to hurt,” cornerback Tim Jennings said.

“It’s hard, man” defensive tackle Stephen Paea said. “We do this for each other.”

On the opposite side of the stadium, Packers players celebrated like happy children.

Some players snapped pictures with their cellphones to capture the moment.

What was it like when the

Packers first entered the locker room after the game?

“Oh, my God,” defensive lineman Ryan Pickett said. “[We were] just excited, man.

Jumping around. Everybody was happy, man.

“It’s our journey. We made it. Now we get to erase our slate, start a new one, and play ball some more in January.”

So close were the Bears to enjoying this moment.

So close were the Packers to a long, quiet offseason.

“You can describe it a lot better with your writing,” Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk said. “You guys are professionals. I’m not smart enough to really put it into words. I wish I was.

“But it was nuts. It’s been crazy, this whole run.”

As Hawk spoke, the image of Emery visiting with his players proved hard to shake.

Those players will part ways this week and disperse to their hometowns across the country, and dozens soon might learn that they will not be coming back.

It’s nothing personal.

“This is the NFL,” Paea said. “If you don’t do your job, they make changes.”

Surely, the Packers could empathize as NFL brethren.

Surely, some part of them could feel badly for the Bears.

Right?

“No,” Pickett said with a grin. “There’s not one part of me that feels for the Bears.”

Then he laughed.

It was the deep, belly laugh of a 6-foot-2, 340-pound man.

It was a winners’ laugh.

CHICAGO – The tangled web of the Jay Cutler narrative was supposed to be straightened out Sunday.

His last game on contract, a 33-28 thriller won by the Packers, was going to make it clear. Play well, Good Jay, forget your 1-7 record against Green Bay, and all is OK. Play poorly, Bad Jay, throw a few picks, and it’s time to go.

“The speculation is, ‘Let’s see how he does in this kind of stage,’ ” coach Marc Trestman said after the game. “I thought Jay played well enough for us to win tonight.”

But the web twisted even more during the game as fans and media sought the answer to the beaten question: Who is he – Good Jay or Bad Jay? The answer, though, lies

in the question itself.

He is who he is.

In the first half, his offense showed the bad as it stalled on four three-and-outs, although it also showed the good.

On his second drive, an eight-play, 80-yard series, Cutler stormed downfield, completing three passes. He topped it off with a 4-yard throw to running back Matt Forte through the cold, misty air, giving his team a 7-0 lead and its only points of the first half.

Cutler couldn’t control much of what happened after that, though.

He couldn’t control Alshon Jeffery fumbling a precise pass in the second quarter, setting up a Green Bay field goal.

He couldn’t control that the defense allowed 20 second-half points, or that he

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com When coach Marc Trestman and general manager Phil Emery evaluate defensive coordinator Mel Tucker and the Bears’ defense, they’ll have to decide how much injuries played a factor in the defense’s debacle.

According to the NFL’s official stats, the Bears used 265 unique lineups on defense, which is not abnormal – they used 275 in 2012. But with so many starters going down, the Bears used their most common defensive lineup only 3.42 percent of the time, sixth-fewest in the league, and had 15 different starting lineups.

However, that lineup (35 plays) was only seen primarily in Week 17 – it’s the nickel defense look with Jeremiah Ratliff, Lance Briggs, Shea McClellin, Isaiah Frey and the rest of the regular starters – so that group is a bit of an anomaly.

The notable lineup that shows how the Bears’ defense was completely hampered by injuries has 11 players we didn’t see together the past 13 weeks of the season.

The Bears ran 32 plays with their Week 1 base defense: Julius Peppers, Corey Wootton, Henry Melton, Stephen Paea, D.J. Williams, James Anderson, Briggs, Tim Jennings, Charles Tillman, Major Wright and Chris Conte. That group allowed 1.94 yards a carry on 17 runs and 2.59 yards a play.

When Melton tore an ACL, then Williams a pectoral muscle and Tillman a triceps, the unit deteriorated. For the first three weeks, though, it was effective. The run defense was ranked ninth in the league.

For comparison purposes, the base defense with McClellin, Landon Cohen, Jon Bostic, Khaseem Greene and Zack Bowman played 15 snaps together, and allowed an ugly 11.36 yards a run play.

That same base defense, but with Tillman in for Bowman and Paea in for Cohen, allowed 15.36 yards a rush on eight run plays.

The defensive formations that had at least seven plays with Melton in the lineup did not allow more than 4.7 yards a carry. The six most-used formations that had Williams at middle linebacker each allowed fewer than 3.8 yards a carry.

Melton’s backup, Nate Collins, played well before he tore an ACL in Week 5. Teams didn’t rush for more than 3.75 yards a carry against the five most common defenses with Collins in the lineup.

By season’s end, with Melton, Collins and Williams all on I.R., and Briggs having missed seven games, the Bears were allowing 5.3 yards a pop.

The fact that the Bears defended the run better with those interior players in the lineup is not a surprise, but the difference between certain formations is staggering.

For those calling for vast changes to the defense, such as a new coordinator or switching to a 3-4, there is some evidence – albeit, only three games – where this group performed well.

And, with this new, high-scoring offense, the Bears don’t need to have a top-10 defense to be a contender.

‘47 Ronin’: Keanu Reeves stars in dull retelling of Japanese fable

By MARK JENKINS Special to The Washington Post One of the defining fables of pre-modern Japan, the tale of the 47 ronin has been filmed many times in that country. Yet somehow no previous director thought to include rampaging supernatural beasts, a shape-shifting witch or Keanu Reeves.

Those last three are prominent in “47 Ronin,” Hollywood’s first stab at the samurai tale. It’s big and brawling yet often dull, with about as much genuine Japanese character as a food-court teriyaki stand. The cast is mostly Japanese, but chosen from the small list of actors with recent credits in mainstream American movies.

The original story pivots on vengeance, but also things that give Hollywood hives, such as patience and discipline. Noble Lord Asano is goaded into a confrontation with devious Lord Kira. Asano attacks Kira, and as punishment is required to commit seppuku (ritual suicide). His 47 loyal retainers – now ronin, meaning masterless samurai – pretend to accept the judgment. But secretly they plan Kira’s doom, knowing that success must be followed by their own seppuku.

This version incorporates much of that plot but juices it with magic.

Working for Kira (“Battleship’s” Tadanobu Asano), smirking sorceress Mizuki (“Pacific Rim’s” Rinko Kikuchi) bewitches Asano into attacking him. Retribution is plotted by Oishi (“The Wolverine’s” Hiroyuki Sanada) and Kai (Reeves), a “half-breed” who was raised by tengu, one of the many varieties of form-changing critters in Japanese lore.

Outsider Kai is initially rejected by the samurai but is adored by Mika (Ko Shibasaki), Lord Asano’s daughter. She’s going to be married to Kira, which might be one reason lovestruck Kai is keen to join the revenge scheme. The probability of seppuku reduces the likelihood of happily-ever-after for the couple but adds a “Romeo and Juliet” element to a script

“47 Ronin” toggles between landscapes that appear European – shot in Hungary – and CGI backdrops that resemble China more than Japan.

The result makes such anti-historical movies as “The Last Samurai” look fastidious by comparison.

Still, “47 Ronin” doesn’t look bad, and the heroes’ final assault is wellstaged. But it frequently lags, and most of the actors – aside from Kikuchi, but including Reeves – deliver the English-language movie’s dialogue as if they learned it phonetically.

Despite the references to Japanese legend, the film’s principal influence is all those recent mash-ups of fairy tales, horror flicks and action pictures. (Co-scripter Hossein Amini helped write one of them, “Snow

White and the Huntsman.”) When “47 Ronin” makes an absurd detour to an island occupied by Dutch traders, the sequence plays like something from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series.

Ultimately, the movie just doesn’t justify its outrageous bid to turn a solemn tale of self-sacrifice into swaggering global-marketplace entertainment. A notoriously troubled production, “47 Ronin” reportedly cost upwards of $225 million. Yet it contains about 10 yen worth of cross-cultural acumen.

• “47 Ronin” received one-and-ahalf stars out of four. The film is rated PG-13 and contains intense sequences of violence and action, some disturbing images and thematic elements. It runs 119 minutes.

Woman considers adoption of sister’s baby Dear Abby: My sister “Nicole” faked several pregnancies to keep her boyfriends around until they wised up. She is now really pregnant by a married man.

Nicole has a long criminal history and has been in and out of jail for various offenses.

She’s now facing drug charges that could land her in jail for the next 10 or 15 years. If she’s found guilty, my mother will get custody of the baby so it won’t have to stay in foster care.

Pregnancy with twins can be challenging Dear Doctor K: I just found out I’m pregnant with twins. How will this pregnancy be different from my last one?

Along with double the diapers and late-night feedings, you’ll experience double the love, laughs and fun. But, yes, you will have to deal with some challenges.

In the United States, twins occur in one out of every 35 births. Twins can be fraternal or identical. Fraternal twins occur when two eggs are fertilized. This produces two embryos; they are not identical, and may not even be the same gender. In fact, fraternal twins are genetically no more similar than other siblings.

In contrast, identical twins develop from a single egg that cleaves, or splits, after it is fertilized. The two halves of the cleaved egg separate, creating two embryos that are genetically identical.

A multiple pregnancy differs from a singleton pregnancy in several ways. For example: • Pregnancy symptoms, such as morning sickness and breast enlargement, may be more severe.

• You’ll gain a substantial amount of weight. Pregnancy is the one time in most women’s life that a doctor suggests that they

• Twins are more likely to be born with low birth weight (less than 5.5 pounds).

• You’ll be at increased risk for developing anemia due to

deficiencies of iron and certain vitamins. That’s why women carrying twins are prescribed relatively high doses of iron and folic acid supplements.

• You’ll also be at increased risk of developing high blood pressure and high blood sugar during pregnancy, a fatty liver, and blood clots in the veins of your pelvis and legs. Having said this, these complications are still unusual and can be treated.

Your doctor will use ultrasound throughout your pregnancy to monitor the growth and development of the fetuses. Ideally, both babies should have similar growth and weight gain.

Ultrasound also provides valuable information about the position of the fetuses. This information is especially important at the time of delivery. It can help determine whether it will be safest for you to deliver vaginally or by cesarean section.

So, this pregnancy may well be somewhat more challenging than previous pregnancies. But you’ll have two wonderful children.

Girl’s self-esteem is bruised over break up Dr. Wallace: Michael and I had been a twosome for over seven months. For the first couple of months, we had great times together, but then things changed and I no longer looked forward to going out with him.

Last week, I made up my mind to end our relationship. I spent hours concocting a final farewell so I wouldn’t let him down too hard.

Even though I was dumping him, I sort of felt sorry for him and wanted our separation to be as painless as possible.

In yesterday’s column, I described how Peter Fredin from Sweden analyzed an auction to deduce the look of the other three hands, then drove into a laydown slam that was missed by his opponents in a team match.

Today, here is my favorite call of last year. It happened too late for the International Bridge Press Association awards, but is surely a front-runner for this year’s.

It was originally described by Marek Wojcicki, for many years the coach of the Polish open team. The deal arose during last October’s Cavendish Invitational Pairs in Monaco.

Look at only the West hand, which was held by Bartosz Chmurski. With neither side vulnerable, your partner opens three clubs (some 5-9 high-card points with six strong or seven respectable clubs) and South overcalls three hearts. What would you have done? What do you think Chmurski did?

At two tables at least, West psyched with three spades. However, one East could not take a joke. After North-South reached seven hearts, East sacrificed in seven spades. This was doubled and down 12 for minus 3,200!

Most players bid some number of clubs, but 17 of the 29 pairs reached a grand slam. (Seven no-trump was reached twice, seven hearts 13 times, and seven diamonds twice.)

Chmurski did best of all. He doubled three hearts for penalty! He planned to run to clubs if North redoubled, but North thoughtlessly passed. Three hearts doubled and made with four overtricks was worth only 930, not even as good as a small slam with an overtrick.
