LOOKING FORWARD Friendship Station Preschool to hold open house Tuesday GENEVA – Friendship Station Preschool will host an open house from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for parents interested in enrolling their children in the 2015-16 year. Annual motorcyle show rolls into town

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jerry Martin – aka “Olde Skool,” according to a patch on his leather vest – perused a veritable ocean of motorcycle parts Saturday at the 31st annual Chicago Motorcycle Show at Pheasant Run in St. Charles.

Vendors displayed everything from handlebars and backrests to wheels and hubcaps and fuel tanks painted with everything from flames to skulls to howling wolves to scantily clad women.

And that was not counting leather jackets and vests, patches, shirts, jewelry and bandanas, many items featuring skulls, skeletons, parts of skeletons and lots of bling.

Martin, 57, of Elgin, said he has been riding motorcycles since he was 15 years old.

“I’m here to shop for motorcycle parts,” Martin said.

“I have a Harley-Davidson Electra Glide. I’m looking for a backrest.”

Martin’s foster brother, Chris Blake, 34, aka “Ghost,” said he loved riding motorcycles and was in the market for a bike.

“It’s just the freedom of getting out and being on the open road,” Blake said. “Being by ourselves, nobody else around.”

Both said they wear helmets when they ride.

Jill Stamate, 37, of Crown Point, Indiana, said it was her first time coming to the motorcycle show.

“I’m a big Harley fan, and so is my boyfriend,” Stamate said. “We decided to check it out and see what they’ve got to offer. ... Lots of vendors … parts, accessories, all kinds of stuff to look at. I’m pretty

happy.”

Westchester resident Chris Grames sat astride a Harley accented with leather and skulls. Grames said he paints and creates accents for bikes.

“Flamework is pretty popular with Harley-Davidson but he [the bike’s owner] wanted a pirate theme,” Grames said.

“It was blue and I painted it black and added the leather and pirates.”

Also drawn to the motorcycle show was Geoffrey Jones of LawTigers, an association of motorcycle injury lawyers Jones also is a motorcycle enthusiast, owning both a Harley and BMW. “When you’re out riding more, that increases the chances that something will happen,” Jones said. “But if you ride a bike, you accept the risks – the inherent risks – in it. Milwaukee resident Steve Johnson was still recovering from an Aug. 1 motorcycle crash. He sat in a wheelchair with his left leg elevated, showing the criss-cross patchwork of 19 surgeries – so far.

Johnson said driving to the show was the first time he was able to drive a car since the crash. And he was there to promote an organization called Biker Down. He said

the organization helped him when he came home from the hospital, and now Johnson said he wants to start a chapter to cover southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

“We help a biker after they’ve gone down,” Johnson said. “Everything from coming and letting them what’s going to happen next to providing durable medical equipment that they can use when they get out of the hospital.”

Charlestowne 18 part of ‘Predict the Oscars’ contest KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The Charlestowne 18 Theatre will be part of Classic Cinemas’ annual “Predict the Oscars” contest for the 2015 Academy Awards competition. Nominees have been announced, and participants can pick their favorites to win. Oscar night is Feb. 22.

The Charlestowne 18 is at 3740 E. Main St., St. Charles.

Participants have until Feb. 21 to enter the contest at all Classic Cinemas locations. The grand prize winner will receive free movies for two for a year at any Classic Cinemas location, as well as a gift card valued at $200 and good at any of Chicago-area Francesca’s restaurant.

Entrants choose from among the nominees in the categories of best picture, best director,

best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, best supporting actress and best animated film. Each of the 13 Classic Cinemas locations will select one correct ballot for entry in the grand prize drawing.

The 12 second-place finishers will receive a movie pass for one for a year. Additionally, every correct entry will receive a pair of tickets to the Brookfield Zoo and a pair of movie passes to any Classic Cinemas location. Winning ballots will be drawn Feb. 23, to be contacted later that week.

Patrons can drop off completed ballots in the lobby of any Classic Cinemas theater.

Buddy Break is a free respite program held about once a month where the church cares for special needs children and their siblings for three hours while their families and caregivers get some downtime.

The church started offering the national program

about a year ago, and interest in it continues to grow. The church served 42 children during its most recent Buddy Break, Valentini said.

“We have families traveling 20, 30 miles for this,” Harper said.

Sally Marino and her family travel more than 20 miles from Hinckley to attend services at the church’s west campus. The Marinos have been members of the church

since 2010 because it offers programming for children with special needs.

One of Marino’s sons, Joey, 9, is part of the Masterpiece Ministry. He has cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder, Marino said.

“It’s really blessed us just to watch [the church programming] grow,” Marino said. “We’ve been very accepted and loved and cared for.”

Also, McGraw appointed three new officers to his staff – Jim Splittgerber as human resources officer, Greg Horodnic as marine safety officers and Lou DeMartelly as public affairs officer.

Jan. 25 at Great Lakes Naval Training Station. The ceremony will be presided over by senior officers of the auxiliary and Coast Guard. It is a formal ceremony with a brunch and music provided by the Navy Band. McGraw previously served as vice commander.

Glisson has served as operations officer. DeMartelly and Horodnic recently have transferred in from another division.

The auxiliary is the volunteer arm of the USCG and serves alongside regular Coast Guard personnel both on shore and on the water in all missions except combat and law

enforcement. Coast Guard missions that focus on recreational boating safety are assigned specifically to the auxiliary. These include public education, vessel examination, marine dealer visitation and public affairs.

The Kane County Flotilla is active in both on-the-water missions and recreational boating safety. A particular focus of the Coast Guard is on small boats and paddle craft.

The flotilla is an active supporter of the annual canoe race on the Fox River. Meetings are at 6:30 p.m. the first Monday of each month in the St. Charles Municipal Building, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles.

One of the benefits of the two special needs rooms is a large changing table in each of their bathrooms, Marino said. This is important because some older children with special needs need to be changed at times, she said.

The special needs rooms, one for ages 8 and younger and the other for ages 9 and older, also include a quiet room and a ball pit. The age 9 and up room has a large interactive touch-screen TV and a small trampoline.

St. Charles resident Carey Von Qualen took her two sons to see the addition after the open house was mentioned during Sunday services.

“It’s wonderful,” Von Qualen said. “It’s so bright and inviting for kids.”

GENEVA – First Baptist Church of Geneva on Sunday invited the public to take in its new space for youth programming and children with special needs.

Several couples and families walked through the two-level, 12,000 square-foot addition during a Sunday open house at the church’s west campus, 3435 Keslinger Road, Geneva.

The space, which was first open for Sunday services Jan. 11, features a renovated children’s area, seven multipurpose rooms, a large dividable cornerstone room used by the junior high ministry, and two state-of-the-art rooms for children with special needs, said John Harper, the church’s director of facilities and information technology.

The west campus addition is part of the church’s larger expansion project called Growing to Serve. The addition will allow the church to serve special needs families through two programs, Buddy Break and Masterpiece Ministries, Harper said.

One for the history books North Stars snap Saints’ 13-game winning streak

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Given the pair of lopsided beatings his St. Charles North boys basketball team absorbed from St. Charles East earlier this season, North coach Tom Poulin figured a history lesson was in order leading up to Saturday’s third meeting of the season.

“I actually was printing out the alltime results because I wanted to show the guys, you know what, we do win [against East],” Poulin said. “But this one right here will go down as good as any of them.”

Saturday’s 78-75 overtime triumph for North – thick with tension and clutch shots both ways – jumps to the top of the list of memorable crosstown showdowns, and likely enters the discussion among top North wins in program history.

Fittingly for North, heart-and-soul seniors Jack Callaghan and Jake Ludwig each buried 3-pointers during the final minute of the OT session, with Ludwig’s coming in the closing seconds to break the 75-all tie. After a timeout, East had only 2.1 seconds to work with and could not prevent North from snapping its 13-game winning streak.

“I wanted to shoot the jumper just because I’d been going to the rim all game, and I felt like they were going to key on that,” Ludwig said of his game-winner. “So I just saw the opportunity, and pulled up. … It felt good.

I’d missed a couple before. I needed to get some more legs under it, and it felt good.”

Callaghan’s long 3-pointer – coming after a crucial Johnny Davern offensive rebound – put North on top, 75-73, with 46 seconds to play in OT, but East senior point guard Cole Gentry tied it at 75 with 18 seconds left on a short jumper.

Poulin then allowed Ludwig and company to play through the growing din in North’s crowded gymnasium.

“I thought if I take a timeout, I’m going to draw something up to get it in Jake’s hands. It’s in his hands, let’s let them play,” Poulin said.

Ludwig and Callaghan played key roles in last year’s triple-overtime loss to Chicago juggernaut Simeon at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament, a performance that earned North’s program statewide cachet. Callaghan said Saturday’s result made this one sweeter.

Both teams were under heavy duress at different points of the fourth quarter. East led, 70-66, with 43 seconds left in regulation before Ludwig came to North’s rescue.

He made two free throws to bring his team within two, then stole an inbounds pass and zipped in for the tying basket with 25 seconds left.

Gentry missed a 3-pointer to win it, but the senior scored five straight points when the Saints (15-2, 7-1 UEC

River) faced a seven-point deficit midway through the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer that brought East within 63-61.

East senior forward Mick Vyzral then pocketed a pair of 3-pointers, each moving the Saints ahead by one point, and two Jake Asquini free throws and one from James McQuillan put the Saints in position to close out North.

East’s inability to do so hinged on subpar defense and rebounding, in Saints coach Pat Woods’ estimation.

“The bottom line is we didn’t defend as well as we have been defending, as well as we defended last night against Larkin,” Woods said. “We did not de-

fend well, and when you have kids like Ludwig out there who can make plays with the ball, shooters, I thought (Armon) Osborne was solid and Callaghan hit some big ones, so when you don’t defend well and you leave shooters wide open, as we usually get to do to other people, that’s what happens.”

The North Stars (12-7, 6-2 UEC River) showcased a much more well-rounded squad than in the first two meetings against East, with role players such as starting center Brendan McCarthy and reserves Osborne and Davern providing boosts at critical times.

Callaghan, though a forward, often positioned his teammates for success with slick passes that caught the Saints off guard.

“When they started doubling, that’s when we started to attack and found open guys for layups,” Callaghan said.

A monster performance from East’s Vyzral (24 points, 14 rebounds) was dampened by the outcome. Gentry had 22 points and Asquini added 11, including a trio of 3-pointers during the first quarter.

North, coming off an abysmal shooting night in a 36-point clunker Friday at Geneva, rediscovered its offensive rhythm behind strong nights from Ludwig (22 points), Callaghan (15), Osborne (14) and Mikey Schroeder (11).

Callaghan led North with 11 rebounds.

The win kept North’s conference hopes alive; the North Stars trail East and Geneva by one game each in the loss column. Maybe just as importantly, the North Stars regained the respect of their crosstown rivals after disheartening showings across the river at the Thanksgiving tournament and in the teams’ first conference meeting.

The possibility of a fourth meeting exists as both teams are part of the IHSA Class 4A Geneva Regional. But if this was the teams’ final meeting of the season, North couldn’t have asked for more delicious closure.

Poulin said his pregame message included challenging his players with the question, “What kind of men are you?”

“Can you open your chest up and give your teammate your heart?”

Poulin said. “That was kind of the pregame speech. It was just kind of gut it out and grind it out because they’re so good, you make one mistake, it’s three points or it’s a layup. It’s satisfying because the kids gave they all they had, and that’s what you have to do to beat a team like St. Charles East.”

While the disparity at the free-throw line rankled East coach Lori Drumtra, she had

widespread concerns about the Saints’ competitive spirit.

“It wasn’t just that,” Drumtra said of the free throw deficit. “That certainly helped them, to get to the line, but I’m disappointed with our lack of sense of urgency. A sense of urgency is missing.”

The St. Charles North girls basketball team played a more physical brand of basketball Saturday, resulting in favorable margins on the glass and at the free throw line as host North topped St. Charles East, 61-43.

The North Stars avenged an earlier loss at East by playing hard-nosed basketball, as evidenced by 31 trips to the freethrow line compared to 11 for East.

Senior wing Nichole Davidson was a frequent visitor to the stripe en route to a 20-point, 10-rebound night. She seemingly sought contact on every dash to the rim.

“We said we had to start being aggressive,” Davidson said. “Every time someone got the ball, our coach said drive to the hoop and get an and-one because one of our goals is we had to get a lot of and-ones and we had to get a lot of offensive boards, so everyone just did their best driving to the hoop.”

Junior forward Morgan Rosencrants also factored heavily into North’s toughness edge. She snared 15 rebounds to go with eight points, helping North pull away after taking a 32-30 halftime advantage.

North coach Sean Masoncup was especially heartened by his squad’s defensive tenacity in the second half, during which East managed only 13 points.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips girlfriend. I know they are sexually active.

I spoke to my son and asked if she’s on the pill.

He said her mom refuses to put her on the pill. I gave my son $10, had a long talk about unwanted pregnancy, and told him to buy a box of condoms every few weeks and bring me the receipt so I know the money is being spent on condoms.

My problem is, my friend disagrees with me about what I did. She accused me of encouraging them. If I had a daughter, I’d buy the pill for her, so why not pay for condoms for my son? Who is right and who is wrong here? – Missouri Mom Dear Missouri Mom: The girl’s mother may think that by not providing her sexually active daughter with birth control, she is discouraging her from having sex. Clearly that hasn’t happened. Of course you are right to make sure your son doesn’t impregnate his girlfriend. Neither one of them is ready for the financial and emotional responsibility of a child.

Something I’m unclear about is why your friend is trying to guilt you out of it, when she should be minding her own business.

That seems debatable – a blunder is still a blunder. It is true, though, that finding a clever play on the wrong deal is pointless.

In this deal, how should South plan the play in seven hearts after West leads a spade?

In the auction, North used two doses of Roman Key-Card Blackwood to learn that his partner had three key-cards (three aces or, as here, two aces and the trump king) and the diamond king. North bid seven hearts, expecting partner to win one spade, six hearts (the normal length of South’s suit for his overcall), three diamonds, two clubs and one club ruff in the North hand.

South, with only a five-card suit, saw the same tricks and a 13th with a second club ruff in the dummy.

So, he won the first trick with dummy’s spade ace, drew two rounds of trumps, cashed dummy’s club king, and played another club. However, East ruffed in to defeat the contract.

That was unlucky, to be sure, but there was a more clever line.

Do you see it?

When dummy’s trumps are powerful, think “dummy reversal.”

After winning the first trick, South should have ruffed a spade in his hand, played a trump to dummy, ruffed another spade high, returned to dummy with a heart, ruffed the last spade, led a diamond or club to dummy, drawn East’s third trump and claimed 13 tricks: one spade, four hearts, three diamonds, two clubs and those three spade ruffs.
