January is National Blood Donor Month Last weekend, I had the opportunity to give back.

My mom and I stopped by the Congregational United Church of Christ in St. Charles, which had Heartland Blood Centers on site conducting a blood drive. We were there to donate blood, and the timing was perfect as January is National Blood Donor Month.

As I’ve written in my column before, I’ve been donating blood since high school. To be honest, if a blood drive hadn’t been hosted at my high school while I was a student there, I don’t know whether it would ever have crossed my mind to donate – I think it was that early experience that got me into the habit.

I reflected on this while perusing the website for the American Red Cross, which states that people don’t need

“Some of us give blood because we were asked by a friend,” the site states. “Some know that a family member or a friend might need blood someday. Some believe it is the right thing to do.”

So, I would encourage readers to consider whether they are able to donate blood, particularly during the month of January.

Additional charges filed against former W. Dundee youth pastor

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Additional charges of possessing child pornography were announced Friday against a former youth minister at a church in West Dundee, officials said.

Chad A. Coe, 32, of the 500 block of Dundee Avenue, Elgin, was indicted Dec. 19 by a Kane County grand jury on six felony counts of child pornography.

Circuit Judge James C. Hallock unsealed the indictments, according to a statement released by Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon.

“He has pleaded not guilty,” said Coe’s attorney, D.J. Tegeler. “Everyone is presumed innocent, and he is professing his innocence.”

According to the indictments, between Sept. 19, 2011, and Aug. 13, 2013, Coe knowingly possessed six files on a computer disc containing video depictions of children whom he reasonably should have known were younger

than 18 years old.

The children depicted were nude and engaged in sexually oriented acts, officials said.

Coe has been released since his arrest Dec. 19 after posting $10,000, or Chad A. Coe 10 percent of a $100,000 bond.

His next court date is scheduled for Feb. 19. If convicted, Coe faces a sentence of probation or between 18 and 42 years in prison.

In June, Coe was charged with criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sex-

ual abuse, both felonies, according to the charges. He was released after posting $10,000 on that case.

At the time, Coe was director of youth ministry at the First Congregational Church of Dundee, in West Dundee, when he allegedly had sexual contact with the victim, who is younger than 18. Coe was in a position of trust and/or authority over the victim when the sexual contact occurred, officials said.

The felonies carry penalties of three to 15 years in prison, and he would have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life if convicted.

Head to open water to spot bald eagles GOOD NATURED Pam Otto I was chatting on the phone with my friend Barb the other night, and we were trying to come up with the names of all the Eagles: Don Henley …

Glenn Frey … Joe Walsh … that other guy ...

What I should’ve suggested – and what would’ve been way easier – is that we try to name all the places eagles are being seen these days: The ones in SEBA Park in South Elgin.

The ones at Mount St. Mary Park in St. Charles. The ones in Geneva, south of the dam.

And many, many more ...

Once federally endangered and teetering toward extinction, the bald eagle, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, has become an increasingly common sight in and around the Fox River Valley.

This trend is even more obvious right now, thanks to the harsh winter we and our neighbors to the north are experiencing.

Bald eagles are piscivores – fish-eaters – by preference

Be on the lookout for bald eagles. They can be seen more regularly around the area than in recent years. and so tend to inhabit areas near lakes or streams. But when the temperature drops, the water freezes and hunting for fish becomes difficult.

While other food sources like carrion may be adopted in the short run, a better long-term survival strategy is to head for open water. When a source

– like our Fox River – is identified, bald eagles from near and far come in to take advantage.

It’s hard to say exactly where the eagles we’re seeing call home, but one clue may lie in the fact that Wisconsin experienced record numbers of breeding bald eagle pairs and occupied nests in 2013.

Some of those birds have no doubt headed for open stretches of the Mississippi and Wisconsin rivers, but I’ll bet more than a few have made their way to Illinois, and our own Fox River.

Even if you’re not into

birding, it can be fun to go eagle-watching. For one thing, you don’t have to fuss much with field guides. Mature bald eagles are pretty unmistakable: Majestic white heads and tails standing in stark contrast to dark brown, almost black, bodies.

These guys are big, too.

They measure 30 inches from bill to tail and weigh almost 10 pounds, which is a lot for a bird. Their outstretched wings measure 80 inches, a span that is simultaneously impressive and hard to miss.

But if you’re one of those individuals who prefers more of a challenge to your birding endeavors, bald eagles deliver on that front, too. Immature birds look very different from adults.

First-year eagles are nearly all dark brown. Their bill and eyes are dark too. But in subsequent years, whitish feathers creep in among the dark ones and the birds take on a more mottled appearance. By age four, a young eagle looks very much like an

Interested in trying your luck at spotting an eagle?

Although you can sometimes find them away from the Fox River (I remember watching an immature bird at Nelson Lake Marsh in Batavia several years ago, pecking away at a dead fish frozen in ice) your best bet is to head for a free-flowing stretch of river.

Close by, current hot spots include SEBA Park in South Elgin; Mount St. Mary Park in St. Charles; Island Park in Geneva; the north Batavia Dam; behind Funway where the south Batavia dam was removed a few years ago; and the riffled, unfrozen segments between Montgomery and Oswego.

If you want to travel a little farther afield, head down to Starved Rock State Park. You can get decent views of the birds from the park’s namesake rock, but you can get even closer to the action at the Illinois Waterway Visitors Center across the river.

If you do head that way, whether it’s Bald Eagle Watch Weekend or not, don’t forget to look down as well as up. Along the shoreline under the trees on Plum Island, which is just downstream from the Waterway Visitors Center, you’re likely to see other notably large birds: great blue herons taking advantage of a free meal of fish chunks raining down as the eagles feed above.

Expect these greater-than-usual numbers of eagles to last until the spring thaw. Then, as waters begin to open up again, the birds will disperse and head back to their home ranges.

In the meantime, make some plans to get out and watch them soar, dive, perch and feed. It’s a great show, one you won’t want to miss. Plus, you can tell your friends you went to see a performance by Haliaeetus leucocephalus. Or, if you want, you can just call them the Eagles.

“You feel like walls are constantly being put up,” Schmidt said about her search for a job and the end of her unemployment benefits. But she said she might be close to finding a job.

Matt Mejia grew up in Joliet and worked as a carpenter and built homes until 2006.

Since then, he transitioned to commercial construction and development, but has been

unemployed since mid-September.

“If it wasn’t for major oil refineries and power plants, we’d be in dire straights,” said Mejia, who is supporting a wife and child. “At this point, my income is unemployment.”

Mejia said he felt lucky to have had his unemployment claim reopened, so he’s getting the benefits.

SMART Local Union 265 business representative Don Moran reminded the panel that it is not only workers who were affected by unemployment.

“The impact that this has had on families can’t be overstated,” Moran said. “To pull

a rug out from underneath them, it’s just unconscionable.”

Foster told constituents he is working on a resolution to extend the expired benefits, but the major step is for the Senate to pass the extension and put heat on House Republicans.

“They have a mindset now that unemployment insurance is for the undeserving poor,” Foster said, saying unemployment benefits were not a partisan issue before the Tea Party started influencing the Republican Party base.

“But I think Republicans will negotiate when they hear the stories of their own unemployed constituents.”

JOLIET – Ann Marie Schmidt is the single mother of two children, both of whom have a rare kidney disease.

That makes her life tough enough, she said. But adding the fact that she is unemployed because of an illness and a long-term disability doctors won’t acknowledge, it creates a situation of uncertainty that brought her to tears Friday morning.

“I have zero income now,” Schmidt said, claiming her unemployment insurance ended with the federal emergency unemployment compensation program on Dec. 28. “So it’s kind of hard to make it.”

Schmidt was one of four unemployed workers who spoke to union leaders and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, in a panel discussion on unemployment in the state and Will County on Friday at Teamsters Member Hall.

Foster led the discussion and told panel members about his disappointment that Congress has not extended the unemployment program, which led to the end of unemployment insurance for 1.3 million people nationwide.

The federally funded unemployment assistance program was created June 30, 2008, and it was modified several times, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration. The American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 extended the program’s expiration date to Jan. 1, 2014.

U.S. Senate members have been working on an extension after it expired, but the House of Representatives has been hesitant to work a deal, Foster said.

“It’s a huge source of frustration for me that this is being blocked,” Foster said, referencing House Republicans’ unwillingness to bring a proposal to extend unemployment benefits.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, said he recognizes the economy isn’t growing or creating enough jobs to get people back to work, spokesperson Patrick Ptak said. But Kinzinger thinks

the best form of assistance to the unemployed is enabling the creation of new, well-paying jobs through pro-growth policies.

“Should a fiscally responsible agreement that extends the emergency unemployment U.S. Rep. program pass Bill Foster the Senate, Rep. Kinzinger will consider it,” Ptak said.

While the United States’ workforce is at 6.6 percent unemployment, Illinois has a 8.3 rate.

Police say there is zero tolerance for violating handicapped parking laws

Parking in a handicapped space without a disability license plate or placard can cost motorists at least $250.

Locally, drivers have been ticketed in such locations as the 400 block of East Railroad Street in Elburn; the 0-100 block of North Dugan Road in Sugar Grove; and the 100 block of North Fifth Street, the 100 block of First Street and the 800 block of South Randall Road in St. Charles.

In St. Charles, the community service officer conducts parking enforcement and

monitors handicapped spaces on public streets and public parking lots, said Erik Mahan, commander of traffic and special events for the St. Charles Police Department.

During busier times, such as holidays, some officers will check for violations at shopping centers, Mahan said.

He noted citizens also call the police department to report violations, including those on private property.

“We’re always looking for voluntary compliance,” St. Charles Interim Police Chief Steve Huffman said, adding handicapped spaces are marked for a reason. “They need that type of access.”

From 2011 to late 2013, the St. Charles Police Department issued 213 tickets, of which 77 were voided.

Huffman said the police department will void tickets for those who forgot to display their placard. The Geneva Police Department follows the same practice, Cmdr. Eric Passarelli said in an email.

“There are many times that an officer will observe a vehicle parked in a handicapped spot and not be able to locate the appropriate handicapped placard,” he said. “The officer will then issue the parking ticket. Later, the motorist will arrive at our [police department] and show that they have a valid placard that they failed to display or [it] had fallen, etc., and the ticket will be made a warning. This happens very frequently.”

According to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office, these are the penalties for misusing the handicapped parking program: n The minimum fine for parking in a handicapped space without a disability placard or license plate is $250. Municipalities may increase the fine to $350. n Unauthorized use of disability plates or parking placards can result in a $600 fine and driver’s license suspension for a first offense. n The fine for physicians who knowingly falsify a disability application is $1,000 for the first offense and up to $2,000 for the second. n The following crimes can result in a Class A misdemeanor charge for the first offense, a fine of up to $2,500 and a one-year driver’s license suspension: using a dead person’s disability license plate or placard; altering a placard; possessing a fake, fraudulent, lost or stolen placard; duplicating or manufacturing a placard; and selling or distributing a fraudulent placard. A second offense could result in a Class 4 felony charge. violations, 297 were switched to warnings.

Fewer people were ticketed in Elburn and Sugar Grove.

The Elburn Police Department issued 15 tickets from 2011 to 2013, and the Sugar Grove Police Department issued three during the same period.

Lt. Pat Gengler, spokesman for the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, reported a similar situation to Campton Hills’. It issued no tickets, he said.

“We are mostly unincorporated and don’t have many, if any, parking lots that have handicapped parking spots,” he wrote in an email. “And we don’t have staff to patrol incorporated parking lots.”

The Batavia Police Department did not respond to a Freedom of Information Act request before deadline. A phone call seeking comment also was not returned by deadline.

Should an unauthorized vehicle park in a handicapped spot, he said, his officers likely would take a zero-tolerance stance.

“That’s one pet peeve that every officer holds dear,” Hoffman said.

That’s because police want to help those who need help, and people who have handicapped placards physically need help, he said.

“You don’t just get a disability placard by going to the local store,” Hoffman said.

Those obtaining a placard or disability license plates will require certification from a licensed physician, physician assistant or advanced practice nurse that the applicant has at least one of six qualifying medical conditions, according to the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office.

Those include certain cardiac conditions, the use of portable oxygen and the inability to walk unassisted.

Those severely limited in their ability to walk because of an arthritic, neurological or orthopedic condition also qualify.

“The Parking Program for Persons with Disabilities is vital to many Illinois residents with disabilities to help them maintain their independence and stay active,” Secretary of State Jesse White said in a brochure about the program.

On Jan. 1, the fine for drivers misusing disability placards increased from $500 to $600. The fine for physicians falsifying disability applications also increased, from $500 to $1,000 for a first offense and up to $2,000 for a second.

White said in a written statement that the higher fines are meant to discourage misuse and abuse of the program.

BOLINGBROOK – The frozen body found in a field Tuesday has been identified as a Geneva man who walked away from a nearby hospital in November.

Tattoos and a medical band confirmed the identity of Jeffrey Talley, 50, shortly before an autopsy was performed Friday by the Will County Coroner’s office.

About 8:45 a.m. Tuesday a surveyor conducting an environmental survey found a body lying in a field off the 1000 block of Windham Parkway – near the north frontage road of Interstate 55, police said.

Bolingbrook Police Lt. Mike Rompa said Talley discharged himself from Adven-

tist Bolingbrook Hospital on Nov. 10 “against the medical staff’s advice” and walked away. Talley’s last known contact outside the hospital was with a Geneva resident who later reported him missing to poJeffrey Talley lice.

Rompa said Talley’s death did not appear to be the result of foul play but the police investigation would remain open until the Will County coroner’s tests were completed.

Talley’s body was taken to the morgue where it would alternate between a refrigerated unit and room temperature in four-hour intervals over the next few days to safely defrost, Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said.

8POLICE REPORTS Batavia • Erica L. Thomas, 33, of the 400 block of Penn Avenue, Aurora, was charged Tuesday, Jan. 14, with theft. According to police reports, Thomas, an employee of Walmart, 801 N. Randall Road, removed $240 in cash from the register while checking people out. The store’s loss prevention department reported the theft, police said.

• Adam C. Benner, 22, of the 1000 block of Hanover Drive, Batavia, was charged Monday, Jan. 13, with possession of less than 2.5 grams

of marijuana.

• A spare tire and rim valued at $300 were reported stolen Monday, Jan. 13, from a vehicle parked in the 600 block of Carriage Drive.

• Mona A. Gabney, 41, of the 42W900 block of Hughes Road, Blackberry Township, was charged Sunday, Jan. 12, with aggravated assault, obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest. According to reports, police were called to the 400 block of Chestnut Street in connection with a dispute.

was arrested after flailing her arms and legs at officers. Police said Gabney resisted arrest by attempting to pull away and refusing to be fingerprinted at the police department booking area.

• David Payrits, 18, of the 1300 block of Fagan Road, Batavia, was charged Sunday, Jan. 11, with urinating in public.

• Carmen G. Rosario, 38, of the 700 block of Cypress Drive, Aurora, was charged Sunday, Jan. 12, with retail theft at Kohl’s, 251 N. Randall Road.

• A 96-year-old resident of Mi-

chelson Health Center, who became agitated while being assisted by an employee, pushed the caregiver on Saturday, Jan. 11. According to police reports, a second caregiver was called and also pushed into a wall.

Police said they took the resident to an area hospital for a psychological evaluation and the caregivers were treated on the scene for bumps, but no charges were filed.

• Two boys, ages 15 and 17, were charged with battery Friday, Jan. 10, at Batavia High School, 1201 Main St., Batavia. Police said the boys had a fight in the main hallway of

Mill Creek kids raising funds for new Ronald McDonald House

tion is raising $6 million over two years to pay for the facility. Chris King, spokesman for Cadence, said Mill Creek is the only school participating in the fundraising so far.

The new Ronald McDonald House will be 18,000 square feet and will be able to accommodate 12 families. Groundbreaking is scheduled for March 18, and construction is expected to take about 11 months.

The new facility will be the fifth in the Chicagoland area and the first in the region connected to a nonacademic medical center.

BLACKBERRY TOWN SHIP – Mill Creek Elementary School students are collecting spare change to help build a new Ronald McDonald House in Winfield.

The students are partnering with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana and the Cadence Health Foundation. The new Ronald McDonald House will be built across the street from Cadence Health’s Central DuPage campus in Winfield, officials said. Delnor Hospital in Geneva is part of the Cadence Health system.

Ronald McDonald Houses provide a place for families to stay at little or no cost when they have hospitalized children who are receiving treatment, according to its website, www.rmhc.org. Families can have home-cooked meals, private bedrooms and children’s playrooms while staying at Ronald McDonald Houses, which are now in 58 countries.

“Cadence Health [Foundation] has provided us with little boxes that turn into little homes,” Mill Creek Principal George Petmezas said. “The student council has taken the lead on this, passing them out to all the students. They take them home and collect any change they can find, fill it and bring it back here. Any money we collect will go to Cadence Health for the Ronald McDonald House.”

The students’ goal is to

raise $5,000 by the end of the school year. The spare change fundraiser will go through the end of February, Petmezas said, then students will decide other fundraisers to do, including during their annual fun fair.

Petmezas said he and other schools’ principals and officials were invited to an informational presentation this summer on the project.

Students chose to embrace it, he said, not only because it is a good cause, but also because a student at the school has cancer.

Answers needed on Geneva library leadership As the Geneva Public Library District enters a period that could shape its future, strong leadership and clear communication will be necessary. The library’s board faces decisions that must be made soon to ensure that.

It’s important that the board’s leaders deliver on a plan that there will be an announcement soon concern-

ing management. Director Matt Teske recently took seven weeks of board-approved leave, and board members recently agreed to hire a temporary management consultant as the director’s adviser.

Esther Steel, the library board’s president, said a statement will be made Monday that will “make things clear for everyone.” That’s neces-

sary. There is some division on the board, as Trustee Susan Shivers voted against hiring the adviser, who will be paid $60 an hour for 15 hours a week.

Teske earns $110,237 a year.

The adviser, Marilyn Boria, will work as an independent contractor, and trustees said the district will not have to pay her benefits or insurance.

The uncertainty comes

during a period in which the library’s leaders could be determining options for the future. In 2013, the library board decided not to proceed with the purchase of the Cetron property at 7 Richard St. in Geneva. But a new building for the library remains a topic of discussion. Leaders have talked about the need for increased space, as well as better parking

options.

If options are being considered, officials must be ready to act when necessary.

What duties will the adviser perform? How long will she be in the role? Who will help determine the library’s future home? The library district’s residents will want answers, and they deserve them. It’s their library.

To the Editor: Government offices, schools and many private-sector businesses in Illinois and across the country will take Monday off in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. While this is an honorable gesture to pay tribute to a trailblazer of the civil rights movement, I want to encourage everyone to take a moment Monday to reflect on the immeasurable contributions and philosophy of Dr. King – a great man and visionary who stood for equality, rejected discrimination and segregation, and who did so in a nonviolent fashion.

I first met King when I was a student at Alabama State College – now Alabama State University – in Montgomery, Ala., in the early 1950s. Coming from Chicago to Montgomery brought challenges and frustrations due to the racial climate in the south. African-Americans were prohibited from drinking at certain water fountains and using certain washrooms; weren’t allowed to choose which seat on a bus to sit on; and were banned from eating at many restaurants. African-American students faced the inequality of a segregated school system.

During my time at Alabama State College, I attended a small church in northern Montgomery where King served as pastor. Dr. King the man, as

well as his philosophy of equality and charitable behavior, made such an impression on me as a college student and have served as a prominent influence in my life to this day. King demonstrated how one man with a dream could impact society and improve the quality of life for untold millions.

I established the Jesse White Tumblers 54 years ago as a way to give back to the community and help those in need of guidance. I became a teacher and a public servant in large part to help others. The influence of King on my life cannot be overstated. In fact, I cannot imagine having become the first African-American to hold the office of Illinois Secretary of State without King’s influence on me and on greater society.

I espouse several philosophies in life that emulate Dr. King. Never discriminate against or dislike someone because of race, creed or color. Do something good for someone every day. And when you become successful in life, give back to those less fortunate.

On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I urge everyone to reflect on the impact that Dr. King has had on their lives and how each of us can strive to better promote fairness, compassion and nonviolence toward others.

This is for the lady who complained about the sidewalks not being shoveled. I do believe there was a warning for people not to be outdoors because it was too cold to shovel. And she was smart to walk on the street. They were plowed real nice. The sidewalks that were shoveled had ice on them, and they were very icy for about a week.

How can the Geneva Library Board get away with siphoning off $900 a week off our hard-earned money? They are giving $60 an hour for 15 hours a week, for a consultant to our library director, who already makes over $100,000 a year.

This is $900 for less than two days’ work. Please, somebody look into this.

Petty and mean-spirited I was unhappy to read in the Jan. 15 paper that once again Susan Shivers had something negative to say about director Matt Teske.

As a board member, I would think it her duty to support and better the library, not criticize it openly. If she has a problem with the director, she should speak with him and her fellow board members directly, and offer sound solutions. Instead, she criticizes with no solutions.

I agree there are some changes that need to be made. But Ms. Shivers’ behavior was unprofessional, petty and mean-spirited.

I look forward to the end of her tenure on the board.

I appreciate their help. They were so good to me. And for this lady to stand with me all that time, it was very nice. I truly appreciate it. I thank the Lord. His angels are busy, and they are everywhere.

Watch where you jog I live in an apartment complex in St. Charles, where joggers run behind cars. There was a day last year, when I placed my car in reverse and realized I was too far out on the main road. When the traffic allowed me to go, I pressed the gas pedal and I backed up. To my surprise, my car was still in reverse. I sat in my car, shaking with disbelief. What if joggers or walkers were behind my car? Please, do not walk or run behind a car when the car motor is running. I could have killed someone.

Also, please do not jog on Route 31, north of Salerno’s restaurant. One moment of distraction by a driver, such as changing a radio station, can kill the jogger. You are putting your life at risk. You are also upsetting conscientious drivers who really do care about you.

Please jog or walk far from the danger of moving cars.

I was wondering if anybody knows if anybody does snowplowing for Batavia and St. Charles. I have friends in Batavia who need snowplows for the driveway. I have friends in St. Charles in need of driveways plowed out. I don’t see ads in the Chronicle about snowplowing, or any other papers.

If anybody knows of anybody who does snowplowing for residential areas, tell them to put an ad in the paper, or in the area where people make the comments. They are senior citizens and they’re stuck in the house and they don’t have anybody to plow the driveway.

Fruendt’s career-high 51 points pushes Bulldogs closer toward league crown

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Shortly after delivering one of the top “Where were you when…?” moments in Batavia girls basketball program history, Liza Fruendt pondered the whereabouts of her shoes.

Summoned to speak for herself and the 51 points that helped lift Batavia past Geneva, 75-68, in a key Upstate Eight Conference River Division game Friday, Fruendt addressed the bedlam in bare feet.

If there’s a next time between the Bulldogs and Vikings this season, perhaps Geneva might petition for 32 minutes of Fruendt without her kicks. Then again, the way things are going for Batavia, you never know.

“We’ve all been coming in before practice, staying after practice. Honestly, it’s just transition,” Fruendt said. “I know I keep repeating myself.

It’s just we’re getting up and down the floor so easy and just passing so well that it’s just becoming transition and easy buckets. It’s a little repetitive, but…”

Say no more. Geneva (12-4, 4-2 UEC River) and the rest of the conference can attest.

Fruendt scored 30 points in Tuesday’s rout of St. Charles East in which she passed Katie Issel to become the Bulldogs’ all-time leading scorer.

On Friday, Batavia (14-5, 6-0) moved closer to dethroning three-time defending River champion Geneva behind a career-high outburst that topped Fruendt’s previous standard of 37, set against Rich South last month.

At one point, Fruendt stepped back to hit a deep 3-pointer – one of six treys on the night – in obvious improvisation. Grinning, Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen turned to Geneva forward Abby Novak, who was waiting at the scorer’s table, and made a quip about great coaching.

The Bulldogs all expressed astonishment when Jensen revealed Fruendt’s final scoring total in the locker room after the game. Jensen spoke unofficially, but said it was probable Fruendt had set a

girls program record. He later tweeted that former standout Corey Williams holds the boys single-game mark with 56 points in 1992.

While she rightfully reveled in her accomplishment – who wouldn’t? – Fruendt

stressed the importance of the outcome above all. Before this winter, the Batavia had not defeated Geneva in six seasons. Now the Bulldogs boast a regular season sweep.

“I think it’s most meaningful knowing we beat them twice in the regular season.

We’ve never won on this floor and it’s our last time playing here, you know,” Fruendt said. “I’ll never forget it.”

Last weekend, Fruendt texted Jensen a score that these days carries almost as much cachet as Friday’s final and 59-51 – Batavia’s margin of victory when it defeated visiting Geneva in early December.

Trinity 56, Whitney Young 52 signified a six-degrees-of-separation kind of thing. Batavia had pushed Trinity at the Montini Christmas Tournament last month, and here was Trinity getting leverage of its own against a program with six consecutive Class 4A final four appearances – including two state titles.

“Really, when I saw the outcome of that game, I was extremely surprised,” Bayram said. “And it just motivated us to be like, ‘All right, we lost to Trinity by two. What else can we accomplish this season?’ It was just kind of like a fire in our belly and made us want to work that much harder.”

The Vikings featured four double-figure scorers – Morgan Seberger had 18 while Grace Loberg, Janie McCloughan and Sidney Santos added 14 apiece – but still couldn’t take sustained control.

A pair of Seberger 3s in the last minute of the first half helped Geneva pull to within 38-30 at the break. Moments earlier, a Fruendt trey had pushed Batavia’s lead to 15.

Throughout the game, fans nudged and asked one another how many points they thought Fruendt had.

The answer shouldn’t be forgotten for awhile, even though Fruendt herself did a double take at the first mention of “51.”

“I was just kind of like, ‘Whaaat?’ ” she said. “I literally had no idea.”

As poorly as his team played offensively, Batavia coach Jim Nazos thought the Bulldogs’ lack of aggressive defense set the tone.

“There’s a lot of parts to an outcome like that in the first half,” Nazos said. “We were almost afraid to be ourselves and go all out and really get to a certain point and pressure the ball a certain way, be at a certain spot right now. Yeah, there were some shooting lulls that played a part in that, some turnovers and some things, but I really believe it’s the first part that leads to the second.”

Geneva, which whipped the Bulldogs, 68-47, in December, never gave the visiting Bulldogs fans much to cheer about, aside from a Tucker Knox dunk in the third quarter. A foul-intensive second half was largely uneventful.

“We went into the locker room all pumped up and excited on adrenaline, obviously,” Geneva senior Justin Durante said. “We come out holding them to just single digits in the first half, which is amazing in itself. In the locker room, we were all

going nuts. We just tried to calm down and say we’ve got to keep it up, keep up the intensity, don’t get screwy.”

Navigato contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds while teammates Cam Cook and Parrilli added 11 points each

for the Vikings.

GENEVA – The wins are piling up for the Geneva boys basketball team just like last year, but unlike last season, so have been the points for the opposition.

While the Vikings have enjoyed plenty of success this season, coach Phil Ralston has taken note of climbing field goal percentages and points a game for opponents compared to last year, and his unease spiked last week when a shaky defensive outing was costly in a loss to St. Charles North.

One week later, the Vikings’ renewed defensive focus was evident as Geneva had an easy time Friday against rival Batavia, winning, 57-44.

The Bulldogs had only nine points at halftime, as the Vikings’ student section made sure to point out.

“We studied them, we watched film on them and we’ve already played them once,” Geneva junior forward Nate Navigato said.

“We knew all their sets, and we just really executed it tonight.”

Ralston said opponents have averaged almost 10 points a game more this season than last, and are shooting more than 40 percent from the floor compared to about 35 percent a year ago.

That’s been a puzzling development considering the Vikings boast quality individual defenders in Chris Parrilli and Pace Temple, not to mention ample size in the paint.

For whatever reason, however, the Vikings’ collective defensive identity has been lacking – until Friday.

“We felt we had to have a real hard look at what we do and how we’re doing it, and maybe refocus,” Ralston said.

The Vikings (14-4, 4-3 UEC River) held Batavia (6-10, 1-5 UEC River) to 4-of-19 shooting from the floor in the first half while converting 14 of 19 of their own shots offensively.

It added up to a 31-9 halftime

Cole, others to be enshrined in the St. Charles East Hall of Fame tonight (Class of 1987, football and boys basketball) will be honored before today’s 6 p.m. tipoff of the East-North boys basketball game.

“I think it’s kind of somewhat rare that somebody that plays a new sport at a new school, very first year there, and all the sudden this many years later [the school] is inducting you to the hall of fame,” Cole said.

“The sport wasn’t established and so it’s really kind of hard to figure out what expectations would be with something brand new, but we kind of picked it up fairly quickly with having a good coach, and that really got us going in the right direction.

We had a great group of players that wanted to learn and wanted to win.”

Cole played high school soccer as an underclassman in New Jersey. At that time, soccer was only a club sport

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab in St. Charles, so he arrived in the Midwest considerably more polished than most of his new classmates.

“Trying to kind of compare New Jersey to here, that’s kind of difficult because out there [soccer] was established,” Cole said.

“Kids played all the time.

Kids grew up playing soccer.

I think Tri-Cities [youth] soccer only started a couple years before in 1977. Soccer ended up being fairly new back then. It wasn’t popular in this particular area.”

Cole was a forward for the Saints and at Waubonsee Community College, and was a team captain at both schools. He then walked on to the men’s soccer team at

Western Illinois, becoming a defensive starter for the Leathernecks.

St. Charles High did not have a soccer conference to compete in when Cole was in high school.

“There wasn’t anyone for us to play against,” Cole said. “Now to see that Tri-Cities rivalry is pretty awesome. … I’m proud to be part of it from the beginning.”

The 50-year-old has remained influential on the local soccer scene well into adulthood.

Cole was a founding member of the St. Charles Celtics, a summer team for local soccer enthusiasts that has played at various spots – the Kane County Fairgrounds, a field behind the Kane County Government Center, Good Templar Park and now East Side Sports Complex – for more than 30 years.

He also is active in indoor leagues at the Sportsplex.

“I’m still doing OK – not too bad,” Cole said. “I can still put the ball in the back of the net. Certainly as you get older, it slows you down a little bit, but what I’m looking forward to is the league I’m playing in is getting ready to have an over-48 league. That’s perfect for me.”

Cole, who lives in Batavia, runs Gary Cole Design, which does graphic design for businesses, websites and, no surprise, has helped design materials for various local soccer groups, such as the Celtics and the annual St. Charles high school alumni tournament.

Gary Cole moved with his family from New Jersey to St. Charles in time for the 1979-80 school year, which proved to be fortuitous timing in the Saints’ efforts to launch a new soccer program.

Cole arrived at St. Charles High for his junior and senior years, the first two years the Saints fielded IHSA-sanctioned soccer teams. He was a solid contributor as a junior and the team’s leading scorer as a senior, helping the Saints go 13-6-2 in the 1980 season under coach Tim Dailey.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE STREAMWOOD – Forward Morgan Rosencrants scored 18 points and point guard Kyla Helsel played despite dealing with a migraine headache Friday as the St. Charles North girls basketball team topped Streamwood, 44-36.

North coach Sean Masoncup saluted the commitment shown by Helsel, who he said was in clear discomfort during and after the game.

“It was a real gutsy performance because she knows we don’t have another point guard without her,” Masoncup said.

Helsel distributed eight assists for North (9-10, 3-3 Upstate Eight Conference River).

“It was a heck of an effort from her, and Morgan played well,” said Masoncup, whose team faces rival St. Charles East today at East.

DeKalb 41, Kaneland 25: At DeKalb, DeKalb forced Kaneland (9-11, 2-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) into turnovers and forced shots throughout the night with its strong 2-2-1 press.

The Knights still were still able to stay in the game in the early going thanks to five points from senior center Kelly Wallner, who finished with a team-high eight. “[We had] a lot less turnovers,” Kaneland head coach Ernie Colombe said of what changed in the second half. “If you take care of the ball, you give yourself a chance.”

Rosary 46, Walther Christian 28: At Aurora, Rachel Choice had 17 points and Quincy Kellett added 12 points, five assists and four steals for Rosary (9-9, 4-2 SCC).

“[We had] a lot less turnovers. If you take care of the ball, you give yourself a chance.”

Ernie Colombe Kaneland girls basketball coach St. Edward 72, Aurora Central Catholic 62: At Aurora, ACC whittled a 22-point deficit to seven in the third quarter, but ultimately was unable to come back in the Suburban Christian Conference game.

Kalie Soris scored a career-high 19 points for the Chargers, while fellow junior Gabi Alfaro added 17.

MAPLE PARK – For the third time in four games, a clutch fourth-quarter shot kept the Kaneland boys basketball team in the game.

Ty Carlson’s 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in the fourth quarter of Friday night’s matchup with Yorkville tied the contest at 49.

Kaneland was unable to carry the momentum into overtime, as the Foxes prevailed, 64-60, in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East game.

After Carlson’s basket, Yorkville’s Josh Bondurant missed an open layup and Carlson snared the rebound.

Knights coach Brian Johnson called a timeout with 0.2 seconds left to set up a shot. Kaneland was unable to score before time expired.

Bondurant (20 points) led Yorkville’s scoring surge in overtime, scoring 11 of the team’s first 13 points, including two 3s. The Foxes made only four baskets all night from beyond the 3-point line.

The teams traded the lead throughout the night.

Kaneland (9-6, 2-2 NI Big 12 East) led, 14-10, after the first quarter. Yorkville led, 28-27, at halftime on a Dakota Gette trey at the buzzer.

Kaneland retook the lead late in the third quarter on a Carslon basket. A John Pruett bucket just before the buzzer gave the Knights a 39-36 lead starting the fourth quarter.

Carlson and Pruett provided most of the Knights’ offensive power. Pruett led all scorers with 27 points, despite sitting out part of the second quarter with a bloody nose after a collision with Yorkville’s

Kyle Domar. Carlson scored 17 points “I think John and Ty really fought hard for to keep us in the game,” said Johnson. “We need to execute better and stay more disciplined with our defense to win tough games like this one.”

Free-throw shooting kept the Foxes in the game in the second half. Yorkville (9-8, 2-2) managed only four baskets in the third and fourth quarters.

The team sank 13 free thows in the two quarters.

“I give them a ton of credit for how strong they were on the free throw line and how they executed down the stretch,” Johnson said.

Drew David scored eight points for the Knights.

Kyle Shimp chipped in 14 points for Yorkville, while teammate Cedric Payne scored 11.

East’s Hilton out for season: At St. Charles, St. Charles East coach Lori Drumtra confirmed senior guard Amanda Hilton is out for the season with a fractured kneecap.

Hilton injured her knee at the Saints’ Christmas tournament last month, and it continued to bother her into the new year. The results of a recent MRI revealed the fracture, which will not require surgery.

Hilton, a four-year varsity basketball player and Nebraska soccer recruit, surpassed 1,000 career points in November.

not only with the weight issue, but also tendinitis in both shoulders and elbows.

“It hasn’t been so bad so far,” Bradberry said of his season. “I’ve had a little bit of an injury which has prevented me [from doing better], I think, but so far it’s not so bad. I got second at the Newbill [Invitational]. I’ve got conference next week and I’m looking to do the best I can.”

Scoring major decisions for the Vikings were Nick Anderson at 120 pounds and sophomore Alex Crowe at 170.

“I thought we wrestled well up and down the lineup,” Chernich said. “Our 160-pounder went up to 170.

He’s a younger kid and did a nice job.”

Shawn MacDonald (113), Ryan O’Brien (126), and Colin Parsons (132) all won decisions for Geneva.

North’s only other victory of the night came from sophomore 138-pounder Jake Chantos, who turned Jordan Soto just long enough in the third period to pick up two back points for a 4-3 victory.

“The season’s been going pretty good,” Chantos said.

“This is my first year on varsity, so it’s pretty tough, but I’m getting used to it and getting better through good competition.”

North coach Ben Hummel was pleased with the effort put forth by his squad against a good Geneva team.

“The scoreboard doesn’t necessarily show it, but I felt like our kids wrestled hard,” he said. “I actually feel like a lot of the things we worked on in practice this week, they took out there on the mat tonight. They wrestled more aggressive and didn’t back down at all.”

ST. CHARLES – The Geneva wrestling team wrapped up a second-place finish in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division Friday night with a 59-9 victory at St. Charles North.

The Vikings (20-3, 5-1 UEC River) had pins from juniors Mike Huck (145 pounds), Brock Perry (152) and Mitch Bradberry (182).

Bradberry was involved in an entertaining back-andforth struggle early in his match with Gavin Thatcher.

Bradberry jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but Thatcher scored a reversal and takedown before the end of the first period to pull within 6-4.

“We both got into some weird positions,” Bradberry said. “I got reversed when I was on top. I made a mistake and he came over on top.”

In the second period,

Bradberry got an early reversal which led to his pin in 2:41.

“He weighed in at 169-anda-half today,” Geneva coach Tom Chernich said. “That’s him trying to keep his weight up.

He can only wrestle 182.

He’s not alMitch lowed to wresBradberry tle 170, yet he weighed in 2½ pounds lighter than the weight class below. But because of the system we have, he now is punished and has to wrestle guys that are weighing probably 184.”

Chernich said Bradberry is a hard worker who lifts a lot of weights, which makes it difficult for him to keep his weight up even by eating more than three solid meals a day.

How was the meet as a stress-reliever, being at the end of finals week and all?

Yeah, you know, I was talking a couple days ago.

You know, the swimming’s the easy part for me, so I was looking forward to coming to this meet. I was kind of done with the finals mindset.

It’s good to get in the water, because when you’re in the water, you never think about school, surprisingly. So you kind of just get to [unwind].

He placed a close second in the 100-yard freestyle before collaborating with East’s winning 400 freestyle relay in the final event of the night in a meet that marked the first big event of the second half of the season.

Brady-Manning no contest in stat that matters

By MIKE WISE Washington Post I usually deplore Superman vs. Hulk juvenile sports arguments – mostly because the rhetoric often ends up denigrating an all-time great just to prove that another is just a smidge more special.

But I can’t stay away from Sunday’s AFC Championship matchup: Old Man Tom Brady vs. Paleolithic Peyton Manning, for the deed to Dodge.

Something about old gunslingers makes us tune in, no?

This game is being cast as pro football’s octagon: you know, the whole, “Two QBs Enter, One Leaves,” as if the result will not only decide a Super Bowl berth but also will settle a decade-and-a-half-long debate over which quarterback has the greater legacy.

I’ve got news for the promoters: This fight is already over.

It’s Brady. It’s always been Brady. And whether Manning’s favored Denver Broncos prevail or not Sunday against the New England Patriots, it will still be Brady.

This is not about quarterback ratings or NFL MVP awards, of which Manning has a record four. The most crystallizing, defining measure of a quarterback is this: whether he can perform at his best at the most crucial moment of his given season.

Manning, 37, has superior career passing and touchdown numbers, but those will never trump these: Brady, 36, has won twice as many playoff games and two more Super Bowl trophies. And he’s been to three more Super Bowls and four more conference championship games.

Even the best statistical argument for Manning in my mind – his 51 game-winning drives, which is tied with Dan Marino for the most in a career – falls short. Brady has led 42 such drives, but six have come in January or February, three of them in the Super Bowl.

That’s not merely clutch for his era. That’s historically money.

Manning is the NFL’s top pitchman earning $12 million a year from partners like Reebok, Sony , Buick, DirecTV and Papa John’s. $38.3 million: Earnings from salary and endorsements for Brady between June 2012 and June 2013.

He ranked eleventh in our annual list of the world’s highest-paid athletes. $134 million: Career earnings (not including endorsements) for Brady, third highest all-time. $207 million: Career earnings (not including endorsements) for Manning, the most in NFL history.

three in January – including “The Catch” to Dwight Clark against Dallas in the 1981 NFC Championship (which Brady actually saw in person as a 4-year-old Bay Area kid) and the 1988 Super Bowl to beat the Bengals.

Of Marino’s 51 game-winning drives, four came in January. John Elway had five in January, and Brett Favre and Drew Brees had three each in January.

Of Manning’s 51 game-winning drives, just two have come in January: his signature win against the Patriots in 2006 that the Colts parlayed into a Super Bowl win and another against a 6-10 Titans team on the last day of the 2010 regular season.

Bottom line: Manning’s greatest hurdle Sunday really

isn’t Brady; it’s overcoming his own failings in January, including the four times his team entered the postseason as the AFC’s No. 1 seed and lost at home. He has won the big one once. That’s it.

Manning will always be considered the better pure passer and mastermind behind the line. But Brady will go down as the greater competitor in meaningful games, who made better decisions when the season hung in the balance.

When all of Manning’s numbers and awards are calibrated, this is not an argument but merely a manipulation of statistics to support a weak thesis: that a quarterback with more yards and touchdowns is simply better.

Brady doesn’t have to beat Manning for the third time in

four conference title games to be thought of as the more accomplished quarterback. If the Patriots knock off Denver, he is on his way to scaling Montana and Elway, the only two of ahead of him in my all-time, top-five pantheon right now.

Fact: Brady and Montana are the only two players in NFL history to win the NFL Most Valuable Player and Super Bowl MVP awards multiple times. If Brady wins two more games this season, he will have as many world titles as Montana.

Fact: Brady and Elway are the only two quarterbacks to lead their teams to five Super Bowls. If Brady takes the Patriots to a sixth this season, he

Fact: No quarterback has more wins in playoff history than Brady’s 18 wins against 7 losses. Montana went 16-7.

Brady has 31 more regular-season wins than Montana and has a higher career passing rating.

Fact: Montana’s greatest receiver during his Super Bowl years was Jerry Rice, only the greatest receiver ever. Manning’s was Marvin Harrison, soon to be a Hallof-Famer. Brady’s greatest receiver during his three Super Bowl victories was Troy Brown. (Randy Moss, bless his straight-cash-homey heart, was just passing through.)

Fact: Manning is 10-11 in the postseason.

For Manning’s professional sake, I hope the Broncos blow out the Patriots and the game is decided before the fourth quarter. I hope for all concerned legacies involved that the game is over long before the final few minutes and that Manning becomes one of the three oldest quarterbacks to win it all after Elway won at 38 years old and Johnny Unitas won when he was 37.

Because if it is remotely close with three minutes left, I will take Brady over Manning 10 times out of 10 – in January, in February, wherever. (We’re talking Peyton Manning here; Eli has stolen two Lombardi Trophies from Brady.)

“The next two weekends we have two of our most important competitions coming up, our conference competition and sectionals,” coach Amy VanWagenen said. “The girls know what it takes to place well at these competitions and they are working harder than ever to stay

at the top.”

The team is coaches by VanWagenen and has 18 members of eight seniors, four juniors, five sophomores and one freshman.

A high-scoring guard, Fruendt has been a consistent force for the Bulldogs throughout the season, including a 37-point outburst against Proviso East at a tournament in Oswego.

Smith helped South Elgin to a 6-3 start to the season, averaging 20.4 points per game during that span. He shot 39 percent from 3-point land and chipped in 5.8 rebounds per game.

I’d just dropped Posey off at home after his trip to the animal hospital, where my budding veterinarian and I learned that he may have a heart murmur. A possible sign of kitty cardio-myopathy, this may require a diagnostic echocardiogram and medication – and perhaps, lead to an early death for our beloved Maine Coon. A lot of unknowns, but some grief, nonetheless.

It was kind of late to throw dinner on the table, but I figured I’d find something healthy and novel at their nifty taste-test station. But then I smelled the irresistible aroma from the grill of a nearby burger joint and got take-out instead. Know what I mean? Dang it. (Note to self: No way, no how, do you attempt a TJ’s visit at dinnertime.)

Had I not already been dressed for the gym, however, I might not have made it at all. One of my dear offspring slammed the door when I quietly insisted that a coat was necessary, which rattled my nerves.

Sometimes that’s all it takes to throw us off, isn’t it? (No excuse for it, but perhaps, now that I consider the possibility, I may not have been the only one feeling “gross.”) I did indeed sweat out the grease – and my frayed nerves, at the gym, which is where I drafted this column.

Because, you see, after I got off the Stairmaster (where columns sometimes percolate) and started my crunches I spotted a piece of dog hair dangling from my sneaker. So, I reached up to yank it – you know, because it was bugging me – and it turned out to be one of MY gray hairs.

And, like one of those never-ending scarves magicians pull out of their hats, it was much longer than I’d anticipated. Seems it was attached to a ginormous tuft of other “stuff” (dog hair? cat hair? God-only-knows what?) that had been lodged in my sneaker. So. Gross.

I HAD to get up and go throw it away (I couldn’t just leave said tuft of random stuff lying beside me on the floor of the busy workout room, could I?).

Once on my feet, too giggly and my focus too far gone for more crunches, I texted column notes to myself. Then I headed straight to Trader Joe’s (no detours) to buy chocolate and coconut and other ingredients

for the no-bake energy bites I spotted this week online.

I needed energy and had a hunch that the kids and I needed a little bit of fun mixed into our after-school snack. If you and yours are anything like me and mine, you do too, so I’ve reprinted the recipe. (See no-bake energy bites at right.)

Here’s a quote by an unknown author that I stumbled upon this week that also made me smile.

“On particularly rough days, when I’m sure I can’t possibly endure, I like to remind myself that my track record for getting through bad days so far is 100 percent. And that’s pretty good.”

Moral of the story? I’m sleeping in my gym clothes. But I’m not giving up chocolate.

Yeah, bring it on.

Optional: My friend Mary suggested adding shredded coconut, and we do believe she’s right. We found that tossing the bites in the coconut makes sweet sense, as they’re quite sticky otherwise.

We also added 1/3 cup crushed macadamia nuts because, well, why not?

8WEEKEND LIFE BRIEFS Environmental Commission to present Green Night Out BATAVIA – The Batavia Environmental Commission will present “Green Night Out at the Movies: The Future of Food” at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday, Feb. 8, in the Council Chambers at Batavia City Hall, 100 N. Island Ave., Batavia.

The event will feature a green-themed movie, free popcorn and drink (for those that bring a reusable cup and bowl) and a post-film discussion about the movie “The Future of Food.”

control the world’s food system.

A bill to require the labeling of genetically engineered foods has been introduced in the Illinois State Legislature and is slated to go up for a vote in the spring.

ST. CHARLES – When 73 million viewers watched as The Beatles “crossed the pond” and hit the Ed Sullivan stage live on Feb. 9, 1964, it was an iconic pop culture moment.

DK: Your love, appreciation and knowledge of animals cover many species. Why did you choose a dog for your first fiction story when you could have gone a more exotic or unexpected route?

KK: I chose a dog because I adore

Kristin von Kreisler is a wellknown voice for animals. Her novel “For Bea,” the memoir of her beloved beagle once rescued from a medical laboratory – and who became Kristin’s personal inspiration for helping animals – captivated readers.

Her work has appeared in numerous periodicals including the Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor and Reader’s Digest. Her articles have found homes in anthologies and textbooks. Yes, textbooks.

She’s taught English and journalism, and she currently resides with her husband in Bainbridge Island, Wash.

In her latest novel, “An Unexpected Grace,” Kristin has shifted her focus to fiction in order to tell the story of two survivors who won’t get past what has brought them together. Lila Elliot survived a shooting rampage that left many of her co-workers dead.

What she left in the bloody office was her ability to trust and live without fear.

Grace survived abuse, but the Golden Retriever can’t seem to find the key to wanting to recover. Both need courage, both need to move on, both need to learn to trust all over again. One of them will have to make the first move, and I promise that move won’t come from where or how readers think it will.

DA Kentner: The obvious question – You are so well known for your nonfiction work, why jump into the fiction pool? The water there can be deep and dangerous.

Kristin von Kreisler: Deep and dangerous water, yes. But very pleasurable! I’m so glad I dove right in, though making the change several years ago was complicated. A publisher had offered me a contract to write another animal nonfiction book, and I kept trying to get myself to sign on the dotted line. But something was stopping me, though I wasn’t sure exactly what. One day as I was walking along a street in Seattle and brooding about the contract, a question suddenly came to me. If you

dogs. It’s as simple as that. I’ve had dogs since childhood, and I can’t imagine life without them. I also believe that dogs have much to teach us if we only open our eyes and see.

I’ve learned important lessons from my dogs about loyalty, kindness, patience and courage. Grace teaches all those things to Lila, the woman who adopts her in my novel. I hope readers will learn from Grace, too.

DK: I almost sense a desire to expand into romance. The location you reside, the scenes around your home life (living on an island, the ocean, ferries, seals, etc.) scream for it. Has that thought crossed your mind?

KK: Yes, it’s crossed my mind.

In Kristin von Kreisler’s latest novel, “An Unexpected Grace,” she has shifted her focus to fiction. don’t want to write nonfiction, why not write fiction? How about a novel about an animal? In that instant, I knew I’d found what I was meant to do. The freedom was delicious. There was nothing to do but dive into the unknown fiction pool, and I’ve never regretted it.

DK: I have to ask, what was the inspiration behind Lila and Grace? The insight/life you give them is incredible.

KK: I knew I wanted to write an animal novel, but I wasn’t sure what it should be about. Then one afternoon after picking up my mail at the post office, I saw a bumper sticker that said, “Grace happens.” I have always loved the idea of grace, which I define as the unsought, undeserved good that comes to us. And I thought, Grace! What a great idea for a story!

I decided to write about a dog named Grace, who would become a grace in someone’s life. From that simple beginning, the story evolved. It’s not just about the grace of Grace the dog,

I suppose that romance will come into some of my stories because it’s a beautiful thing – and you’re right about my island being a special place.

But romance won’t be the major purpose of my books because my interest is always in the animals and their ability to heal us and influence our lives. If the animal’s story fits in the context of romance, then I welcome it. Animals first, romance second.

DK: With this new venture, are you stepping away from, or at least slowing down, your work in animal welfare?

KK: I am committed for life to helping animals in any way I can. That means being open to whatever comes my way in the form of a needy creature or of a request for me to serve in some capacity. I feed birds and squirrels and rescue lost dogs and kitties. When invited, I give talks on writing about animals and on animal compassion and emotion. I’ve served on boards of animal welfare groups, organized an animal photo exhibit for our local wildlife shelter, and “manned” booths for animal charities at fairs. Certainly, I am committed to answering all the calls for help that I can manage. That’s part of my vocation.

Music can promote healing and ease stress Dear Doctor K: I believe music helped my mother recover after her stroke. Is there a connection between music and health?

Dear Reader: The ancient Greeks certainly thought so. They put one god, Apollo, in charge of both healing and music. Recent medical studies seem to confirm what the Greeks thought. Music seems to slow heart rate, lower blood pressure and reduce levels of stress hormones. It can also provide some relief to heart attack and stroke victims and patients undergoing surgery.

How does music exert these benefits? Some research suggests that music may promote the brain’s ability to make new connections between nerve cells.

Another idea is that it works its magic through its rhythms.

Humans are rhythmic beings.

Our heartbeat, breathing and brain waves are all rhythmic. The human brain and nervous system are hard-wired to distinguish music from noise and to respond to rhythm and repetition, tones and tunes.

Not long ago I had a vivid example of that. I was late to attend a concert because of a noisy traffic jam with lots of honking. I parked the car and entered the theater.

The concert had already started,

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff and the music was louder by far than the sound of the traffic I had just left behind. But despite its volume, the sound of the music made me feel instantly at peace.

I had left a world of disordered noise, and entered a world of ordered sound.

As you suspect may be true of your mother, there is some evidence that music can help with stroke recovery. One study enrolled 60 patients hospitalized for major strokes. All received standard stroke care. In addition, one-third of the patients listened to recorded music for at least one hour a day, another third listened to audiobooks, and the final group did not receive auditory stimulation.

After three months, verbal memory improved 60 percent in the music listeners, compared with 20-30 percent in the audiobook group and to the patients who did not receive auditory stimulation. In addition, the music listeners’ ability to perform and control certain mental operations improved by 17 percent. The pa-

tients in the other two groups did not improve at all.

Music therapy also is used to help patients with balance and coordination. A program designed to train older adults to walk and perform various movements in time to music helped improve their gait and balance when compared to their peers.

I introduced a friend with severe Parkinson’s disease to a friend who was a singing teacher.

I thought singing might help him cope with his disease. When my friend with Parkinson’s disease would find himself “locked” and unable to walk or use his arms much, he would burst out singing a few notes of an aria – which unlocked his legs.

Finally, music can relieve stress. It can improve mood, even in people with depression. And it can lower heart rates, breathing rates and oxygen demands in patients who have recently suffered a heart attack.

Music not only “has charms to soothe the savage breast.” It also helps us to heal.

Teen questions agreement to trade chores for good grades Dr. Wallace: My mom and dad are divorced, and my mom and I lived, until recently, in an apartment. My mom said that if all my grades were B’s or better, I wouldn’t have to do household chores.

For the past year, I’ve kept my grades up, so I didn’t have any chores to do. This also gave me more time to do my homework.

Last month, my mother married her boss at work, and we have moved into her new husband’s house.

He has two daughters.

One is my age, and the other is two years older.

My stepfather seems nice, and so do my stepsisters. They all have gone out of their way to make me feel at home.

Both of my stepsisters have household chores to do.

My stepfather asked me what chores I had when mom and I were in the apartment, and he was surprised when I told him I didn’t have any. I told him that my mom and I had an agreement that as long as all my grades were B’s or above I wouldn’t have to do any chores. Then he said his daughters both were honor students, but they had household chores to do. He said it was up to me to decide if I wanted to continue not doing chores or join in with the other girls and be assigned chores.

He told me he would not be upset if I chose not to do chores because he would honor the agreement my mom and I had.

I talked to my mom and she said it was up to me to make that choice.

I don’t know what to do.

Dear Jacob: For most people, complexion problems start and end during the teen years, but according to Dr. James Fulton, founder of the Acne Research Institute, acne can cause problems for some adults until their late 30s. A few people battle acne their entire lives.

You should visit a dermatologist now. You don’t have to sit around hoping your acne will disappear. With proper treatment, your acne problem will, in all likelihood, improve dramatically or be eliminated in a short period of time.

Today’s deal was chosen as the best-played of the day. It was declared by the Earl of Caithness, who was in four spades. West led the diamond king. When East started a high-low with his 10, West cashed his diamond ace and persevered with the diamond queen. How did Caithness continue?

North, Lady Blackstone, made a game-invitational limit raise of three spades. These days, in the tournament world, jump raises in competitive auctions are pre-emptive. North would have cue-bid three diamonds to show spade support and at least game-invitational values.

If South ruffed the third diamond low in the dummy, East would overruff, and later declarer would lose a club to go down one. Alternatively, if he ruffed with dummy’s spade queen, that would promote a trump trick for the opponents if spades were breaking 3-1, also resulting in down one.

Caithness saw the solution.

At trick three, he discarded a club from the board – a textbook loser-on-loser play. Then, after drawing trumps, South ruffed his club loser in the dummy to take five spades, two hearts, two clubs and that ruff.
