had the chance to follow St. Charles East wrestler Anthony Rubino around a bit last week as part of a “Slice of Life” feature on what it’s like to be a high school wrestler. In my short time with him, his focus and determination stood out.

Anthony, a sophomore, is the third Rubino boy to wrestle at East and one goal seemed clear – to join brother Brandon on the wall of the wrestling room as a state champion.

Sheriff’s office: Streetlight shot out

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A utility worker repairing a streetlight in St. Charles Township this week discovered the lamp had been shot out, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

A township official reported the incident Tuesday.

The official told authorities the same light – which is at Essex and Park avenues – had to be replaced for the same reason last fall, police reported.

Police noted the damage might have been made by a

BB gun.

Days earlier, sheriff’s authorities responded to Essex Avenue near Fox River Drive for reports of a man shooting at icicles from his bathroom window.

Sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Pat Gengler said in an email that the incidents were not related.

“Essex stops and picks up, so it was not near the other incident,” he said.

The new tools for success Geneva businesses learn about using social media

ENEVA – Kristen Kaven, owner of Montage Salon and Spa in Geneva, was eager to upgrade the 5-yearold business’ profile online.

With some tutorials from Geneva, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and the Geneva Public Library, Kaven said the company’s website was upgraded, as was the Geneva Bride site. Geneva Bride is a consortium of 24 local businesses, including Montage, involved in the bridal industry.

“It’s helped a lot,” Kaven said of the continuing business education programs offered in Geneva. “I had social media training through the library. I not only used them for Facebook, but with help in different avenues to correspond with emailing.

There were several areas the library is helpful in. They are very knowledgeable in social media.”

With help, Kaven said the company was able to update its Facebook page and is now also on Pinterest, an online content sharing service.

“More people see you in general and kind of get the

word out about what you’re doing every time somebody likes or shares information,” Kaven said. “They might not have a direct need, but for friends, a mom or sister – it sends a chain reaction. The more you do stuff on it, the more you get back.”

And that is one of many ways the city, in partnership with the chamber and the library, is looking to help local businesses be more successful.

Kaven was one of more than 80 people who attended the Geneva Downtown Merchants meeting this week, co-sponsored by the city, the chamber and real estate developer ShoDeen, with featured topics on how to promote a business through social media. Kaven said the speakers helped her see how to use Pinterest and other social media to develop a company brand and define it online.

“You definitely walked away with a lot of different tips,” Kaven said.

“It was packed – not bad for 8 a.m. on a Wednesday in January when it’s cold,” chamber spokeswoman Laura Rush said. “That is why this is important – united we stand.”

Geneva Business Development Specialist Paul Evans said the city also offers periodic Frontline Training events, a customer service training program for employees on the “frontline” such as cashiers and sales personnel.

Other events include Merchant Open Houses, in which a downtown block is picked and stores stay open later and merchants go around to a host store to meet their neighbors, Evans said.

“You meet your neighbors and find out what your neighbor does or what products they have,” Evans said. “It’s about building relationships.”

Geneva Economic Development Director Ellen Divita said the city’s commitment to its business community is evident by the resources it commits to the economic development department.

“The business community creates our identity, who we are as a community,” Divita said. “It’s a financial benefit, a sense of place, and the financial element of a strong business community supports the tax base and takes the burden off taxpayers.”

NEW Geneva dancer headed HOT LISTING to state talent competition 470 000 $

Teen won contest at 2013 county fair

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com GENEVA – For years, Emily Schmid has finished among the best at the Kane County Fair Talent Contest, but in 2013, she broke through as the senior division champion.

Now, the 17-year-old Geneva High School senior has an opportunity to show she is among the top talents in the state. Schmid will compete Saturday at the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs Official Talent Contest State Competition in Springfield.

She will represent Kane County, along with Hampshire resident Daniel Souvigny, who won the junior competition.

Schmid is a dancer, winning with a performance set to the song “Titanium.”

Schmid wrote that her goal at the competition “is to perform my best and make Kane County proud.” She added that she plans to study nursing in college, but she would “plan to continue dancing through college and through the rest of my life. Whether performing for the community, competing or teaching students, I will never stop dancing because dance is a part of who I am.”

Last year’s Kane County representative, Elburn resident Nicole DiSandro, finished in first place at the state competition’s junior division.

Larry Rossi, the coordinator of the Kane County Fair Talent Contest, said in a news release that organizers were “very proud of Nicole and the pride it brought to all of us in Kane County” last year. He said “the judges were highly impressed with the quality of talent in our community.”

He gets 2 years of probation in case

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A St. Charles man accused of injuring his neighbor with a knife last year has pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Judge Karen M. Simpson accepted Edward E. Brubaker’s plea on Jan. 8, according to Kane County court records.

Records show the 52-yearold was sentenced to 24 months of probation and that an aggravated assault

charge against him was dropped.

Brubaker was charged with the felony following a stabbing incident that happened in June at an apartment in the 100 block of North 15th Street in St. Charles.

The fight Edward E. was with his Brubaker then-23-yearold neighbor, who was found in the apartment building with two long slash marks on his right side under his arm and a cut on his head, police have said.

The injured man was reportedly treated by emergency personnel at the scene.

Library officials plan management announcement No details given about statement coming Monday

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva Public Library officials said they would be issuing a public announcement Monday regarding the library’s management.

Esther Steel, the library board’s president, refused to be specific about the announcement other than to say it was about management.

“We are going through a process right now to put us in a position to release that press statement and make things clear for everyone,” Steel said.

“There will be a press release out by noon on Monday as to what has happened regarding the library’s management.”

At a special meeting this week, library trustee Susan Shivers disparaged library director Matt Teske, when the board majority voted to hire a temporary library consultant at $60 an hour for 15 hours a week. Teske earns $110,237 a year.

“I know it’s going to be painful for some people to hear this, but our director has been on the job six or seven years and either he can get it right by now or he cannot,” Shivers had said.

Shivers’ comments drew criticism from trustee Bob Shiffler.

“I think that comment was totally inappropriate,” Shiffler said.

Steel defended Shivers’ right to state her opinion, al-

though she disagreed with it.

“Susan has the right to voice her opinion, but it was not the tone or feelings of the rest of the board,” Steel said.

Teske said he could not comment on what statement would be forthcoming Monday. But regarding Shivers’ comments, Teske echoed what Steel said.

“All I have to say about that is board members have the right to say what they want,” Teske said. “I also feel I have the support of the majority of the board.”

As to the impact of her comments, Shivers said, “Everything I said in open session, I said in closed session.”

But Shivers’ critical opinion of Teske was not always the case. In January 2013, minutes show the library board majority approved a 2.5 percent pay increase for Teske. According to the minutes, “Trustee Shivers stated that she was voting ‘no’ purely based on finances. [Shivers] fully supports director Teske and thinks he is doing a fine job.”

“At the time, I felt he was overpaid for his qualifications,” Shivers said of her comments a year ago. “I have learned a lot more about the job he’s actually been doing.

I’ve learned more facts as to his fulfilling his job responsibilities.”

But Shivers would not be specific, saying it was discussed in closed session.

In Tuesday’s 5-1 vote with one absent, the board hired Marilyn Boria, the retired director of the Elmhurst Library, who served as a temporary interim director at Sugar Grove.

– Hurlburt (Burt) W. Haring, 88, of Cornell, Mich., and formerly of Elburn, passed away Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Aug. 14, 1925, in Marquette, Mich., the fourth son of Leslie and Florence (June) Haring.

Burt graduated from Escanaba (Mich.) High School in 1943, where he met and fell in love with Norma Sanville. Burt and Norma married on June 22, 1946. He farmed in Michigan until 1950, when they moved their young family to Illinois. There he farmed for a time before becoming a milkman for Riverview Dairy in St. Charles, and Ludwig Dairy in Elgin. He finished out his career working as a maintenance supervisor at The State Bank of St. Charles. They lived and worked in Illinois for 38 years before returning to Michigan to retire in 1988.

Burt was a devout man of God throughout his life. He taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and held many leadership positions both in Michigan and during his time at First Baptist Church of Geneva. During his lifetime, Burt had many interests and hobbies, including woodworking, stained glass, riding ATVs to hunt for wild mushrooms or raspberries, and in retirement, playing the harmonica both for pleasure and for leading worship.

Burt was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Vernon; one daughter, Cherie; and two daughters-in-law, Donna and JoAnn. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Norma (Sanville) Haring of Cornell, Mich.; four children, Dick Haring of Cornell, Mich., David (Melody) Haring of Sigel, Pa., Daren (Lori) Haring of Elburn and Christine Haring-Clausen (Jim Clausen) of Geneva; three brothers, Robert (Audrey) Haring of Grand Marais, Minn., G. Wilber (Elaine) Haring of Fairhope, Ala., and R. Kenyon Haring of Downers Grove; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren;

and many nieces and nephews.

DONALD H. McKAY Born: Sept. 14, 1920; in Chicago Died: Jan. 14, 2014; in Geneva GENEVA – Donald H. McKay, 93, of Geneva and formerly of Fontana, Wis., died peacefully at his home Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014. He was born in Chicago on Sept. 14, 1920, the eldest son of Harry and Julia McKay. On June 22, 1946, he was united in marriage to his late wife, Rosemarie. Together with their seven children, they moved to St. Charles in 1960 and made St. Charles their home for 40 years.

In 1947, he became co-founder and president of McKay Contractors Inc., an underground utility contractor that performed heavy construction throughout the greater Chicago metropolitan area.

He remained active in his business until his retirement in 1998.

He was a longtime member of Big Foot Country Club in Fontana, Wis., where he pursued his greatest passion, golf. He was an active member and officer of the Irish Fellowship Club of Chicago, as well as several other civic and charitable organizations in the Chicago area. He leaves behind his legacy of cherished family, coveted friendships and the myriad of lives he has touched.

He is survived by two sons, Michael (Natalie) of Fontana, Wis., and Donald J. (Debora) of St. Charles; three daughters, Kathleen (Thomas) McKay Breen of St. Charles, Mary (Louis) LaBuda of Batavia and Susan (William) Burgman of St. Charles; 20 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Louise. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemarie; and two sons, James of Miami, Fla., and William of St. Charles.

The Batavia Park District continues to seek feedback on the future of the Batavia Teen Center, at 27 N. Prairie St., Batavia. in 1996 and has offered a variety of programs, including an after-school program and summer camp. When interest dwindled at the middle-school level, the park district began to focus on high-schoolers with teen band nights.

To accommodate the bands and the audience, Bykowski said, performances were held in the Eastside Community Center at 14 N. Van Buren St. near the Teen Center house.

Batavia High School senior Andrew Martinez remembers going to the community center in sixth grade for activities on Friday nights, a program that still continues today.

He has never been inside the Teen Center.

Martinez said teen pro-

gramming likely would have more success in the community center than in the smaller teen center, which can host only about 20 students at a time.

“You’ve got to have a more open space,” said Martinez, who offers that very same thing as co-owner and CFO of the Wifflot Wiffle Ball Field on Batavia’s east side.

Even if teens have outgrown the center, it has not outgrown the Batavia Park District. The house could be used for other programs in different age groups, Bykowski said.

BATAVIA – The Batavia Park District has gathered some opinions already on the local teen center, but staff members want to hear more.

The district this week held its final round of focus groups with students to get feedback on the Batavia Teen Center, 27 N. Prairie St., Batavia.

Although no high schoolers participated, the district did hear from middle-school students who anonymously suggested movie nights, a “Family Feud”-style game show night and volunteer trips.

To solicit more opinions, the park district plans to email a student questionnaire to households with middleschool-age and high-schoolage children. The district also might make arrangements to set up a table at Rotolo Middle School lunch periods, said Kristin Bykowski, Batavia Park District recreation supervisor.

Bykowski said the focus groups gave the district some insight, but not enough to make any final decisions about the teen center.

“Are they looking for big events and activities, or just a place to hang out after school?” Bykowski said.

OPINIONS The snow and cold – they really tire me Before last week’s deep freeze that kept faucets dripping and dogs in booties, there was snow. No one loved it more than sledding kids – and tire companies. The white-out pushed more rubber out the door than if it had hailed nails.

When driving on snowpacked streets felt like a go-cart’s slick track, I took our car to the nearest of a hundred thousand boxy look-alike tire stores. At the counter, I was talking to a young Johnny Depp impersonator, until I unfolded a consumer watchdog list of tire rankings, when Charlton Heston hip-checked Depp aside.

“That’s no good. Wouldn’t go with them,” Heston’s finger dismissed one brand after another. “They’ve got issues ….” Then, he tapped the firstplace – and most expensive –

Michelin Defender. “You want peace of mind, go with the Defender.”

Who doesn’t want peace of mind? It’s been my aim in life ever since the turbulence of adolescence ended when I turned 35 or 40.

“Let’s go with the Defender,” I said with wheel authority.

“Now,” Heston added, “do you want your new tires aligned?”

I thought, sure, put them on all pointing in the same direction. “Is that extra?”

“Run you, oh,” he mused as if I asked his favorite Christmas present, then disclosed the price.

“Let’s go with it,” I said with Gen. MacArthur conviction.

Told it would take an hour, I decided to wait. Heading to

RIVER TOWN CHRONICLES Rick Holinger the corner where faux leather couch and chairs crouched before a TV financial program along with one other customer, I quickly (15 minutes later) mastered the Starbucks coffee maker. When the person left, I turned the TV’s sound off and happily read a novel.

Soon, more folks arrived, but no one asked about or touched the sound. Instead, Depp and Heston would wander over to announce, “You could use a transmission flush;” “Your brakes are worn to point-three centimeters minus pi squared;” “Your wipers are torn to shreds.”

We tried to parry the inevi-

table, “OK, do it,” with, “Umm, can I see the brake?” “It really needs flushing?” “How torn are they?” We might as well have been questioning the density of Conestoga wagon axle grease.

Two hours later, Johnny Depp pronounced my car ready. Handing over my credit card, I realized something even more incredible than my bill – even though they looked bored as working gastroenterologists, no one waiting had turned up the TV’s volume.

A psychologist or philosopher might conclude that this Midwesterner cross section lived meek, modest and conforming lives, too cautious or polite to question or change the status quo. Count me in that number; remember, not until alone did I turn down the TV. No way would I presume

my needs should disrupt anyone else’s peace of mind – even though they might not.

Moreover, I agreed to buy the Michelin Defenders over the much-lauded, consumer-watchdog approved cheaper brand. Oh, advertisers know this too well – we often favor emotion over intellect.

I’m good with that. After all, who am I to think otherwise?

Lawmakers milking the farm bill THE WASHINGTON POST Down on the farm, the latest news is the battle over dairy policy that thwarts passage of a new five-year package of federal subsidies for agriculture – and the nutrition aid for low-income families that is attached to the bill. The conflict pits the Democratic-majority Senate, which wants to boost dairy farm incomes, in part, by limiting milk supplies, against the Republican-led House, whose leader, Speaker John Boehner, calls the Senate approach “Soviet-style.” This story of partisan bickering – true enough as far as it goes – does not quite do justice to the wasteful absurdity of the entire dairy-subsidy effort.

Each body’s version of the farm bill contains a new

“margin insurance” program that pays farmers when the difference between their operating income and their operating costs goes below a certain amount.

The Senate would add a “market stabilization program” to margin insurance. Basically, farmers who participate in the latter would agree to curtail production at times of low margins in return for full benefits.

The goal, of course, is to reduce supply when farmers’ margins are low, drive up prices and help producers at less cost to the government. This is the provision Mr. Boehner decries as Soviet economics – though it might be more accurate to call it a federally sponsored cartel.

Like most cartels, to the extent that it doesn’t punish consumers, it is vulnerable to cheaters

and free-riders, especially since farmers can often use modern forecasting tools to calculate market prices and operating costs in advance, as economists John Newton and Cam Thraen of Ohio State University have noted.

Neither bill contains a convincing explanation of why the dairy industry deserves government-guaranteed prosperity. The industry’s real problem is that it has become phenomenally efficient at producing huge quantities of a substance Americans no longer want as much as they used to – per-capita consumption of fluid milk is down 30 percent since 1975. The Agriculture Department expects that to continue.

Congress can write all the farm bills it wants, but it can’t repeal the law of supply and demand.

Saints, North Stars eyeing final meets as postseason approaches

By KEVIN DRULEY druley@shawmedia.com T. CHARLES – Final exams for District 303 students concluded when school did Thursday. Make no mistake, there was no extension for an evening session at the St. Charles North pool.

While the North Stars reveled in a 100-86 victory against crosstown counterpart St. Charles East, they also made sure not to assign too much meaning to the result with plenty of season still ahead.

“I think we might want to be a little bit farther than we are right now,” North Stars sophomore Stephan Hutchinson sad, “but we’re on the track to get there.”

Hutchinson and classmate Joe Myhre helped North to its latest checkpoint. Both athletes teamed up as part of the North Stars’ victorious 200-yard medley and 200 freestyle relays and also enjoyed individual success.

Hutchinson won the 100 freestyle in 50.71 – one-hundreth of a second faster than East’s Nick Wellman – while

Myhre, a transfer student from Indiana, took titles in the 50 freestyle (22.28) and 100 backstroke (55.59).

“I love it. I mean, you’ve got great teammates. I like my captains a lot. Good people,” Myhre said. “It was a good move.”

North competed at home for the first time in almost a month Thursday, but won’t have to venture out much between now and the state meet Feb. 28 to March 1 at Evanston.

The North Stars will travel to separate invitationals at Hinsdale Central (diving) and New Trier (swimming) on Saturday before an Upstate Eight Conference dual Thursday at Bartlett. After that, the team hosts its own invitational, the UEC meet and a sectional.

East finds itself in a similar situation, inasmuch as it doesn’t have to leave St. Charles until state. Saturday’s annual college events invitational at the Norris Center pool kicks off a homestand that includes duals against Neuqua Valley, South Elgin and Rockford Guilford before

the conference meet Feb. 8.

The crosstown showdown provided a fitting springboard for the season’s homestretch.

“Most of our meets so far, they’ve been pretty low-key, you know. More of the meets we go in and are like, ‘OK, we’re kind of going to smoke them on this one,’ ” Saints senior Will Shanel said.

“Here, you know, we came in, we knew we had to push.

The last couple weeks have been rough, tons of yardage, tons of practice. We had finals this last week, along with North. So everybody, both teams, East and North, we all brought the spirit. We definitely stepped up there.”

Athletes from both sides expressed pleasant surprise in the size of the crowd, which included more than just the usual offering of swimmers’ family members and girlfriends.

Wellman’s astronomy teacher, Julie Dowling, came to see the team compete, including Wellman’s teammate/ classmate Gage Harshbarger.

East’s individual winners included Nick Boryk (200 free,

1:49,44; 500 free, 4:59.52); John Tarpey (200 individual medley, 2:06.07) and Shanel (100 butterfly, 53.51; 100 breaststroke, 1:04.69).

Tyler VanGyseghem teamed with Shanel, Wellman and Boryk in the winning 400 freestyle relay to close the meet.

Ross Davis and Tim Steele (200 medley) and Benjamin Sherman and Collin Bawolek (200 free) were the other members of North’s winning relays, while North Star Mike Burke won the diving competition.

The North Stars prepared for a senior recognition dinner in the cafeteria Thursday after completing some cool-down yardage. Although one topic of conversation was clear, North was adamant it wouldn’t be the dominant one.

“We’re just going to have to look at this meet, see where we were. We did good,” Hutchinson said. “And we’re just going to have to move from there and try to keep progressing and getting better.”

“We just didn’t jell as a team. Our passes were kind of off and we didn’t come out ready to play, which is a key for us,” Geneva junior forward Janie McCloughan said.

“When we come out and we’re ready to play, then we usually really excel throughout the game. We just didn’t come completely focused, and that was a big issue for us.”

Vikings freshman center Grace Loberg was a notable absentee from the first Batavia-Geneva game. She hadn’t been promoted yet from the lower levels. Geneva coach Sarah Meadows opted for a bigger lineup after point guard Michaela Loebel, sidelined for most of last season with a torn ACL, experienced recurring knee problems that have put her senior season in peril.

“It’s awesome. It’s such an accomplishment. She deserves it more than anyone on this team,” Bayram said. “She’s worked so hard, and she was even saying to us, ‘[Tuesday] isn’t about me, it’s about our team.’ If it wasn’t for everyone around her, she said she wouldn’t be able to do it, so that means a lot.”

Had she fallen short of 20 points against the Saints, Fruendt would have been in position to reach the milestone tonight. As it stands, there remains plenty of drama set to unfold in the first half of the doubleheader.

North’s zone defense, shooting take care of Sabres

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com STREAMWOOD – The St. Charles North boys basketball team is warming up more and more each game to its matchup zone defense.

The North Stars have played matchup zone predominantly this season and it’s treated them well more often than not. It certainly did Thursday as North plowed past Streamwood, 70-27, in Upstate Eight Conference River play.

“When I first came back from my injury last week, it’s like the whole zone evolved from the beginning of the year,” North senior forward Erik Miller said. “It’s just so strong. We close out on shooters well. We take so much pride in that zone. It took me

about a week to even catch up to get on everyone’s level because they just keep getting better at it.”

The North Stars haven’t played this much matchup zone in the past but North coach Tom Poulin said the defense gives North a better chance against higher-end teams that might pose matchup problems if North played man-to-man.

Poulin said he reviewed a DVD on the matchup zone run by current George Mason and former Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt, and sprinkled in some of the principles of the legendary zone run at Syracuse under Jim Boeheim.

“We ran it a little bit last year against Larkin in the regional, and the kids loved it,” Poulin said. “We had it in all last year and we used it now

and then, and the returning players really liked playing it.”

North (11-5, 5-1 UEC River) won its fourth game in the past six days, and especially in the past two games, the North Stars’ defense has sparkled.

After holding Bartlett to 36 points in a win Tuesday, North was even stingier Thursday, albeit against the floundering Sabres (1-15, 0-6 UEC River).

The Sabres were scoreless in the third quarter and scored 12 of their 27 points when North was deep into its expansive bench in the fourth quarter.

“We need a bigger hoop, I guess,” Streamwood coach Paul Kowalyszyn said. “I don’t know. We had good looks. Missing layups and

everything. I told the kids at halftime, I don’t know what else I can tell you. You’re in the right spots. You’re getting good looks – you’re either passing them up, fumbling the ball or you’re missing the shots.”

Poulin is intrigued to find out what kind of adjustments teams make against North’s zone in the season’s final weeks.

“Everyone’s done something different in every game – they’ve attacked it differently,” Poulin said. “Now it’s going to be interesting when you see people for the second time, what they do.”

North made 9 of 14 from 3-point land in the first half, after which it led, 42-15. That was a modest lead compared to the 37-6 bulge at the 2:40 mark of the second quar-

ter after a Camden Cotter 3-pointer.

The North Stars connected on 13 3-pointers for the game, including a 4-for-5 showing beyond the arc for senior Alec Goetz (team-high 12 points).

Miller (11) and reserve guard Nathan Didier (eight) were also among the 13 North Stars to score in the game.

North’s fifth game in eight days will be its most anticipated as the North Stars seek a regular season sweep against crosstown rival St. Charles East on Saturday night at East.

“We have to have our best performance on both ends of the floor,” Poulin said. “It’s not just going to be defense or not just going to be offense.

We have to have our best performance to beat them at their place, so we’ll see.”

An undercard this isn’t.

While today’s Geneva-Batavia girls basketball game may open the hers-and-his doubleheader at Geneva, fans would be wise to treat the 5:45 p.m. tipoff as if it were primetime.

The Bulldogs enter play with a 5-0 Upstate Eight Conference River Division record, while the three-time defending league champion Vikings are 4-1 and eager to vault closer to the front of the race.

“I think that it’s going to be a blast, because I think both of us are playing really well right now,” Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen said. “They seem to have it clicking. Even coming out of Christmas with the losses, I feel like we’re playing well.”

Four of Batavia’s five conference victories have come by at least 20 points, with the only true close call coming in a 5951 home win against Geneva in December.

Since that loss to open conference play, Geneva has defeated River foes by 22, 13, 27 and 18 points. The Vikings remember what went wrong against Batavia and are poised not to repeat it in front of a

By MARK LAZERUS Chicago Sun-Times Andrew Shaw’s story, told and retold countless times during his dizzying rise from afterthought to NHL stalwart, is all about persistence and peskiness in the face of doubters and opponents alike.

Twice passed over in the NHL draft, too small to make an impact, too tough a lineup to crack – none of it stopped Shaw from becoming a 22-year-old with a $4-million contract and his name on the Stanley Cup, a streak of blood forever oozing out of his obliterated right cheek in Blackhawks lore.

So who’s going to tell him he can’t become a top-six forward on the most offensively gifted team in the league, a guy who could be the answer Patrick Kane and Joel Quenneville have been looking for at second-line center?

Actually, for the Hawks’ sake, maybe somebody should tell him that.

“I’ve always hated being told what to do,” Shaw said. “So I kind of just try to make my way by proving people wrong.”

Two games into Quenneville’s latest second-line experiment, Shaw is looking quite comfortable between Kane and Brandon Saad. After posting one goal and no assists in his previous 13 games as the third line foundered, Shaw has a goal in each game, plus an assist.

Shaw is known more for his scrappy play and antagonistic style, but with 13 goals, 11 assists and a permanent home on the Hawks’ top power play unit, he’s proving offensive in more ways than one.

“I think a lot of guys get stereotyped,” Saad said “Regardless of thinking he’s … a grinder, whatever you want to call him, he definitely has some skill.”

That said, with Kane on his right wing and Saad on his left, it’s not Shaw’s job to score goals. His job is to do the dirty work in the corners to fetch

them the puck, to crash the net and clean up their rebounds, and to focus on defense so they don’t have to. His job isn’t to score points, it’s to allow Kane and Saad to score points. Whatever he gets is a bonus.

“It kind of jells well,” Saad said. “Even though he’s not the typical playmaking center, he still can make plays. And playing with playmakers like Kane, it helps both of us with him working hard and going to the net.”

Shaw’s rise to the second line is reminiscent of Dave Bolland’s last year – a checking-line guy thrust into an unlikely offensive role.

It didn’t work out with Bolland, who proved far more effective in a bottom-six spot, particularly in the playoffs. And while the Hawks could wind up missing Shaw’s presence further down the lineup come the postseason, Quenneville had nothing but good things to say about his first two games in his new role, and suggested that it could become a permanent home for him.

Of course, aside from Jonathan Toews lining up at center on the top line every night, nothing is guaranteed in Quenneville’s lineup. Just last week, he touted Marcus Kruger as a possible answer at second-line center, only to bump him back down to the fourth line by the end of his first game there. So while Shaw called it a “privilege” and said that he very much wants this to become a “long-term thing,” he knows better than to ever get comfortable in a role.

“Real short leash,” he said.

“I can’t take the foot off the gas.

I’ve got to keep going and keep pushing myself, and keep improving game in and game out.”

It’s a big chance for an unlikely star. But while Shaw even admits to surprising himself sometimes with how far he’s come, his never-ending quest to prove himself has made him greedy – in the best possible way.

jcowley@suntimes.com WASHINGTON – No word on whether Jimmy Butler drove the team bus to the airport Wednesday night and then flew the charter from Orlando to Washington D.C., but it wouldn’t come as a surprise.

After all, the third-year player set a franchise record in the triple-overtime win over the Magic, playing 60 minutes.

“I’m sure I’m going to hear about it,” coach Tom Thibodeau joked afterward.

If there’s one aspect of Thibodeau’s coaching that is often under the microscope, it’s the heavy minutes he’s put on certain players since taking over before the 2010-11 season.

That was evident during the 2011-12 season when former Bulls forward Luol Deng led the league in minutes played with 39.4. Deng was again atop that category last season at 38.7, and Joakim Noah was right there through the first two months of last

season until plantar fasciitis limited him in the second half.

With Deng traded to Cleveland almost two weeks ago, Butler seems to have been anointed the new minutes warrior, but the coach had actually been a bit softer with handing out the minutes this season, with Deng 13th in the league at 36.4 minutes a game.

Even with the heavy workload Wednesday, Butler was averaging 34.2 minutes a game, so the Magic game was more aberration than anything else. And Butler’s teammates appreciated every second he played.

“I feel like we should definitely bake Jimmy a cake for playing 60 minutes,” Noah said. “I’m really happy for him that he made a franchise record. No, seriously, though, there’s nothing better than that feeling of getting on the bus and you’ve won. Even guys who say, ‘Oh, I don’t care.’ But [Orlando players are] driving home [after the game] and they’re [upset].

There’s no better feeling than winning a basketball game.

It’s the best.”

And while Butler’s performance was inspiring, almost lost in the win was what Noah did, and what he’s done since

Deng was traded .

The All-Star center played 49 minutes in the Magic win, scoring 26 points, grabbing 19 rebounds and dishing out six assists. In his past five games, Noah was averaging 15 points, 15 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.8 blocks, while playing 38.2 minutes a game.

“There are not many players like him,” Thibodeau said of Noah. “His all-around defense, every aspect from the rebounding effort to seeing things early, seeing how they’re developing. But probably the most important thing is to make two, three and four efforts on the same play. Often times, I don’t know how he gets to the ball, but he gets to the ball. That helps unite and inspire your team.”

“The thing right now about his offense that has made him so good is he’s making quick decisions and they’re right on the money. No holding the ball, just a quick decision, and I think that’s helping the team a lot.

“He has a great will to win.

No matter what’s going on in the game. Even when things aren’t going his way, when the game is on the line he is going to find a way to make something happen. That’s important.”

The St. Charles East wrestling team completed what coach Jason Potter called “step one of many” Thursday, defeating Elgin, 53-15, to complete an unbeaten run to the Upstate Eight Conference title.

The victory against the Maroons was the Saints’ sixth conference triumph in as many tries. East accomplished the same feat last season.

“That’s always something we’re going into the

season trying to do. It’s nice to have that down,” Potter said. “Wrapping this up also means we’re approaching the end of the year, and I think that’s got the kids just as excited.”

East’s highlights included top-of-the-lineup victories from freshmen Joe Ruffino (major decision, 106 pounds) and Anthony Benjamin (fall, 113).

ing to attract young fans. But will the promise of a visit to “Clark’s Clubhouse” suffice to keep your five-year-old at the ballpark for nine innings?

Wouldn’t you be better off with another soft-serve ice cream in a miniature batting helmet? More to the point, baseball’s demographic problem won’t be solved by someone walking around in a cuddly costume. Instead, it might consider speeding up games, which weren’t always so painfully slow.

We’re still months away from Clark’s big-league debut and already he’s the subject of such intense ridicule that the Cubs felt compelled to issue a statement in his defense. The team is standing by its new mascot. Which I suppose is better than standing in front of him, given that HE IS NOT WEARING PANTS. This is just one of the strange details that make Clark so freaky

looking. There’s no science to sports mascots, but you know a good one (Mr. Met!) when you see one. With his blank stare, gaping maw and backwards cap, Clark looks like a cheap, slightly disturbing knock-off of the (depressingly) generic Berenstain Bears.

A soulless, cheesy mascot is perhaps not the cure to what ails the Cubs franchise, which finished last season with 50 home losses, the most in team history. Attendance was the lowest in 15 years.

There’s not a whole lot of reason to think the team will be much better in the near future. Their minor-league system is short on developed, high-end prospects. Even if the Cubs wanted to try to buy a pennant, they probably wouldn’t have much luck.

Baseball’s free-agent pool is going to be pretty shallow for the next few years.

Cubs, seem to feel the problem isn’t the team, but the old-fashioned park in which they play. After threatening to move, they managed to persuade the city to approve a massive renovation of Wrigley Field, which will include the addition of a Jumbotron.

The Ricketts are also pushing for the Cubs – the only Major League team that still plays most of its home games in the afternoon – to play more night games. Some might argue that it’s about time the team joined the 21st century. But it looks to me like the Cubs are busy squandering the only things they have going for them: History and mystique. At this rate, they’ll soon be just another normal, bad baseball team.

The Cubs rolled him out this week, complete with a weird origin myth on the team’s website: Clark, evidently, is the great grandson of the actual black bear – this part is true – named Joa who lived in a cage outside Wrigley Field for part of the 1916 season before being shipped off to the Lincoln Park Zoo that September.

I’ll let the Cubs’ marketing department take over from here: “When Joa retired to the Lincoln Park Zoo, he delighted the young bears with hundreds of amazing Cubs stories, and Clark was hooked!

He dreamed of making his great-grandbear proud and playing for the Cubs – even though he’d never even seen a game. Then one day, Clark heard the roar of the crowd

coming all the way from Wrigleyville. Determined to finally see the Cubs in person, he followed the sound to Wrigley Field, just in time to see the Cubs raise the W flag. Inspired by Clark’s enthusiasm and love of all things Cub, the team invited him to continue the family tradition and become their official mascot!”

It’s hard to know where to start. I guess, from an ethical point of view, Clark is a vast improvement over Joa – to say nothing of the hunchbacks, little people and mentally disabled individuals who baseball teams used to trot out as mascots. No actual bears were harmed in this costumed marketing strategy. Clark’s primary purpose, according to a study that led to his creation, is to make Wrigley more “family-friendly.”

The telephone blues It is time to throw the telephone out the window, even at the risk of getting a burst of cold air.

Dumping it into the river can be an alternative. Too much aggravation.

For example, I called a local health-care facility; talked to four different people; and got put on hold twice before accomplishing my business.

I also called the out-oftown nursing home where a relative has been a longtime resident – it was his birthday.

When I asked for him by name, the reply was, “Who?” After spelling the name twice, I was transferred to the desk on the first floor.

“Not here,” she said.

So, the operator rang the second floor. After a dozen rings, there was no answer.

The operator agreed to page him. No response.

So, she rang the second floor again. The voice on the line asked me to identify the person and, after doing so, the voice said: “He’s right here. Do you want to speak to him?”

After an admittedly sassy response, he declared, “You have a bad attitude, lady.”

Clearly the telephone itself gets a reprieve. Here’s a “go jump in the river” to my protagonists.

On another note, the four corners of West Main Street

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry and Second Street, the center of my world in those good old days of the ’50s, have been completely transformed.

To me, that intersection was the gateway to all that any mall would provide – Gartner’s Bakery, the National Bank, Bagge Drugs and Larson and Johnson’s Men’s Clothes. In a shorter walk than the mall, there was a movie theater, super market and mom-and-pop grocery stores, more banks, drug stores, a couple of hardware stores, candy stores, jewelry stores and a cab stand with a monkey.

Familiar name such as Colson’s, Kroger’s, A&P, Broman’s, Essig’s, Rehm’s, Klick and Worthley, Block’s, Niemen’s, Mack Brother’s.

Jerry Fisher and George Simon migrated up and down the street.

There were several taverns, but – for the most part – the patrons behaved themselves and made use of the indoor toilets.

Recall Palable Lounge, the Walnut Room, Three Deuces, Roman’s, Martin Johnson Roman’s, and around the corner, there was Triest’s, Frohlings, Carlson’s and my

favorite – The Oasis.

Must not forget the record store and the original Blue Goose. Thinking back – it WAS a mall. We just called it “downtown.”

Finally, a farewell to our neighbor and friend, Elsie Risch.

She was the descendant of another friend, widely – and affectionately – known as Harriet the Belgian Queen.

My best memory of Elsie is the daily walk passed our house with her dog. More than once she brought over her spare perennial plants to share.

I shall look forward to the appearance of her BlackEyed Susans in the spring and think of her smiles and generous heart.

Have to go now, the phone is ringing. Don’t ask me who is calling. The caller ID is likely to say “number unavailable,” “private caller,” “out of area” or a name I don’t recognize.

The caller, with no prior greeting or identification will ask for my spouse.

Open that window. Here comes the phone!

This vehicle comes in four flavors, Sport, Latitude, Trailhawk and Limited. Prices, respectively, are $24,995, $26,495, $29,495 and $29,995. All share a 2.4-liter, 184-horsepower inline four-cylinder engine mated to a nine-speed shiftable automatic transmission.

Except for the Sport, a 3.2-liter, 271-horsepower V6 engine is optional. The models can be two- or four-wheel-drive, except for the Trailhawk, which is strictly 4WD. The Sport is basic with 17inch steel wheels. The Latitude exchanges the steel for alloy wheels and adds, among other features, roof rails, fog lights, body color door handles and mirrors and tinted glass.

The Trailhawk is a real off-roader with undercarriage skid plate protection of vital engine and transmission parts, tow hooks and a locking rear differential. It adds sportier exterior trim, satellite radio and an 8.4-inch color touchscreen.

The Limited foregoes the off-roading equipment, or most of it, and concentrates on pleasures such as keyless pushbutton ignition, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, cargo

A Latitude arrived for a week of testing. First and second impressions were that this is a comfortable, zippy, capable, practical vehicle with some but not all of the desirable power features. Seats, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and liftgate are manual. The power liftgate came with the test Latitude, but it was one of a dozen items in a

$1,995 option package. That package also included remote start (nice on cold days and nights), power driver’s seat, rear backup camera, keyless ignition, dual zone climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, automatic headlamps, satellite radio, garage door opener and a rear cargo cover and net.

Jeep Cherokees are like the iconic Wrangler in that they are equipped for off-roading.

It can be modest off-roading or more serious off-roading, and that is where the Trailhawk comes in. But, even the tested Latitude came equipped with the electronics to change the gear ratios depending on terrain. The range of gearing

covered sand, mud, snow and climbing a hill. The tested Latitude had no trouble off-roading through Midwestern piles of snow or going up a relatively steep snow-covered incline.

Ground clearance is 7.9 inches and, although the suspension in the Latitude is not as tuned to off-roading as that in the Trailhawk, it performed well during the few off-roading experiences during the test week.

The Latitude’s 225 tires are wide, and they are mounted on 17-inch painted aluminum wheels.

The 4,044-pound, fourwheel-drive Latitude averaged 23.1 miles per gallon during the test week. The Environ-

mental Protection Agency rates the vehicle at 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined.

Besides the 17-inch tires and wheels, exterior highlights of the Latitude included halogen projector headlamps, LED daytime running lamps and LED tail lamps.

Major interior features include the power windows (express driver), door locks and exterior mirrors. There is a 12-volt outlet in the lighted and carpeted cargo area and another in front. Cupholders are lighted and that is nice at night. No fumbling when trying to put a hot cup of coffee in a holder.

The sound system includes AM-FM radio, five-inch touchscreen, voice command with Bluetooth, USB port in front center console bin, audio jack input for mobile devices, vanity mirrors on front visors, cruise control, intermittent wipers and air conditioning.

Safety features include airbags not only in front and overhead for the two seating rows, but also on the sides of front and rear rows. Also, there are two knee bags.

Other safety elements include keyless remote entry, traction and stability controls, trailer sway damping, tire pressure monitoring system, seatbelts and headrests for five, child-safety door locks, rear child-seat tethers and anchors, and sensors that detect a rollover so vehicle mechanicals can respond accordingly (cut power, tighten seatbelt tensioners, for example).

This vehicle has hill start assist, which means the driver does not have to play with the brake when stopped in traffic on an incline.

Warranty coverage is three years or 36,000 miles, and five years or 100,000 miles on the powertrain and for roadside assistance.

By ANN HORNADAY The Washington Post When the 2014 Academy Awards nominees were announced early Thursday, all ears were attuned to the expected names. Jared Leto, Lupita Nyong’o, Cate Blanchett, Matthew McConaughey and Bruce Dern given nods in their respective categories?

Check.

“Gravity,” “American Hustle” and “12 Years a Slave” dominating nominations for acting, writing, directing and best picture?

No big surprises there, and all as it should be.

Then, you cry. No nomination for Robert Redford for his astonishing one-man show in the gripping seafaring thriller “All Is Lost”?

Outrage! No Tom Hanks, who delivered such a subtle tour de force in “Captain Phillips”? The nerve! No Oprah Winfrey or Forest Whitaker for their superb performances in “Lee Daniels’ The Butler”? Robbed, I tell you, robbed!

No love for “Inside Llewyn Davis,” other than deserved nods for sound mixing and cinematography? (The film’s brilliantly satiric ditty “Please Mr. Kennedy” should have been a shoo-in for best original song but was deemed not original enough due to its sly nods to previous ’60s folk songs.) No “Stories We Tell” in the lineup for best documentary?

Oh, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

You exist to make us crazy.

Granted, in a year as strong as 2013, there are bound to be heartbreaks once the winnowing process begins. But Thursday’s shutouts were notable, especially

Surprisingly, Robert Redford did not get an Academy Award nomination for his one-man show in the gripping seafaring thriller “All is Lost.” the near-complete zotzing of “Saving Mr. Banks,” a paean to Hollywood studio big-footing (er, collaboration) that only earned one nomination, for original score.

Emma Thompson, who many predicted would be recognized for her tart portrayal of “Mary Poppins” author P.L. Travers, went un-lauded, her spot presumably on permanent hold for Meryl Streep.

Still, having nominated nine films for best picture, surely the Academy could have come up with a 10th in such a strong year. What a perfect way to honor “Fruitvale Station,” Ryan Coogler’s stunning debut featuring a quietly electrifying lead performance by Michael B. Jordan — or at least “Saving Mr. Banks,” “Blue Jasmine” or “Inside Llewyn Davis.”

Vitamins, diet may help slow macular degeneration Dear Doctor K: My ophthalmologist has told me I have “dry” AMD. What is this? What can I expect going forward?

Dear Reader: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the small part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. The retina is the back part of the eye. As light enters your eye, the lens of your eye focuses the light on the retina.

The retina then sends signals to the back of your brain. It’s there that your brain translates those signals into vision – the image of the things you are looking at.

People with AMD often develop blurred or distorted vision.

They cannot clearly see objects directly in front of them. Eventually they may develop a blind spot in the middle of their field of vision.

In the earliest stages of AMD there often are no warning symptoms. (That’s one reason regular eye exams are important.) If the condition progresses to intermediate AMD, you may begin to notice blurring in the center of your vision. At the advanced stage, the blurred area increases, making it hard to read or even recognize people.

AMD rarely occurs before the age of 55. It then becomes more

AMD occurs in two main forms: dry and wet. You mentioned you have the dry form – as do the vast majority of people with AMD. Some cases of dry AMD progress to the more serious wet form of the disease. Wet AMD can cause sudden vision loss.

The less-common AMD is called “wet” because the blood vessels in or underneath the retina start to leak fluid, which causes further damage to the retina.

Currently, the only treatment for dry AMD is vitamin supplementation combined with a well-balanced diet that includes dark green leafy vegetables and several servings of fish per week.

Research shows that high doses of antioxidant vitamins and minerals can slow (and sometimes prevent) progression from intermediate to advanced AMD. You should also monitor your condition by regularly testing yourself at home with an Amsler

grid test. You focus your eyes on a central dot on a grid. (The lines near the dot may appear wavy or be missing because of your AMD.) Routinely test each eye and contact your doctor if you notice any changes. (I’ve put an illustration of the Amsler grid test on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

Quitting smoking and wearing hats and sunglasses to block the sun’s blue wavelengths – which may promote AMD – may help reduce the severity of the disease.

If you have already lost some vision to AMD, low-vision aids can help. Examples include magnifying glasses, text-to-speech conversion software for your computer, audiobooks, and “talking” watches or alarm clocks.

A patient of mine who was an avid reader developed AMD in her early 70s. Unfortunately, reading became very difficult.

For her, audiobooks and text-tospeech conversion of newspaper articles she accessed from electronic Internet subscriptions made a huge difference in her life.

Dear Nameless: Peyote is considered an illegal drug and comes from the peyote cactus, which grows in the Southwest U.S. and Mexico. Certain Native-American tribes have been using peyote in religious ceremonies for centuries.

Several years ago, the U.S. government gave the OK for peyote use in the religious services by members of Native American tribes who live in the U.S. Peyote is not permitted to be used by any other U.S. citizen.

Peyote can be smoked, or chewed and swallowed. Its prime purpose is to cause the user to hallucinate. The major dangers of this drug are psychosis, psychological dependence, paranoia and the instigation of irrational, potentially

Dear Abby: When my husband died, he didn’t have a lot of possessions. He died without a will, so what little he had is now with me. My problem is my mother-in-law keeps asking that I return things she gave him.

I wouldn’t mind if she has them, but she has been giving them to his children, who hated him and were rude and disrespectful. They neither called nor came to see him during his long illness. They didn’t even bother to come to his funeral.

A deal to declare or to defend

CELEBRITY CIPHER

In golf, there is usually more than one way to hit a shot to the green – assuming, of course, you are skillful enough to do that.

In bridge, many deals give only one side a chance to do something meritorious: declarer or the defense. But sometimes both sides will have an opportunity, although one side might require the other to err. That applies in this deal.

Would you prefer to declare or defend in three no-trump after West leads a diamond to dummy’s bare ace?

If you like to declare, look at only the North-South hands and plan the play.

Alternatively, cover the West and South hands. At trick two, declarer leads the club king from the board. How would you, East, defend?

South starts with only six top tricks: two spades, one heart and three diamonds.

The other tricks must come from clubs, but dummy is short of entries. South should be happy to lose two club tricks and to do it as quickly as possible. So, at trick two, he leads a low club from the board. After that, everything is under control. If the defenders must get two tricks in a suit you wish to establish, make them take those tricks as quickly as possible.

If South makes the mistake of starting with a club honor at trick two, East can defeat the contract by ducking, letting declarer take the trick.

Then South lacks the dummy entries to establish and run the suit.
