fter returning from an amazing holiday break, I was thrown into the task of getting art to illustrate our typical winter weather last week. After four days of snow and cold – and looking for people outside, either

toughing out the snow and cold, or enjoying it – I was already tired of the weather.

So, on Monday, as I saw a beautiful sunset appear, I decided to head out to LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles to see whether any-

thing exciting was happening.

I instantly saw Mel Zuehlke of St. Charles coming out of the woods and into the sunlight on his cross-country skis.

Judge to hear 2 motions next week in Geneva murder case

Aldermen discuss changing public comment portion of meetings

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP - A Kane County circuit judge on Thursday scheduled two hearings next week in advance of a Geneva murder trial set to begin Feb. 2.

A hearing on Kane County Public Defender Kelli Childress’ motion for a bill of particulars will be Wednesday, and a hearing on Kane County Assistant State’s Shadwick King Attorney Greg Sams motion in limine will be Jan. 22.

Childress is defending Shadwick King, 47, who was indicted in September on two counts of first-degree murder in the July 6 death of his wife, Kathleen. Her body was found on railroad tracks less than a half-mile from the Kings’ Geneva home, police said.

Childress on Jan. 8 filed for a bill of particulars to obtain more details regarding the state’s charges against King, according to court records.

The two indictment counts state that King “by means of asphyxia” caused his wife’s death. In the initial charging document, the state claimed that the act committed by King was “suffocation,” but that claim later was omitted in the indictment, Childress wrote in her motion.

A transcript of Grand Jury testimony appears to indicate the act committed by King was strangulation, Childress wrote.

King has not received any evidence that he strangled or suffocated anyone, nor has he received information that the alleged victim suffered a strangulation or suffocation, according to the motion.

“The lack of evidence disclosed leaves open the possibility of changing the theory over and over again, resulting in surprise to the defendant at trial,” Childress wrote in the

Sams’ motion in limine is also known as a request to a judge to prevent specific pieces of evidence from being part of a trial. He said he will have at least one other motion that he plans to file by Thursday.

Sams in open court on Thursday said one of the motions had to do with an expert witness the state plans to call in the trial.

Childress said there was a large amount of material to review for Sams’ motion, but her client’s demand for a speedy trial still remains.

The overall discovery material for King’s case so far amounts to more than 200 gigabytes, including 3,000 written pages, hours of video footage and thousands of photographs, Childress said.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting debated whether they should change the city’s policy on public participation at meetings. More than a year ago, aldermen switched the time that people can address aldermen on matters not on the agenda from the end of the agenda to the beginning.

“We just have to make some decisions and come up with a policy and stick to it,” 4th Ward Alderman Susan Stark said. “Staff would like to come up with a brochure.”

Second Ward Alderman Alan Wolff said he liked having public comments at the beginning at the meeting.

“Whatever we decide it to be, we should control it so it doesn’t become a free-for-all,” Wolff said.

Seventh Ward Alderman Drew McFadden also liked keeping public comments at the beginning of the meeting, saying it is more convenient to residents. However, 1st Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien said he thought public comments should be moved back to the end of the agenda.

“Listen to what it is we do here, then bring your arguments forward,” O’Brien said. “I would not like anyone to feel that they are unable to speak to us as a body. We should listen to the people we work for, the residents.”

The consensus of the board was to keep the public comments at the beginning of the meeting. As part of the proposed Batavia City Government Public Meeting Guide, City Administrator Bill McGrath said he will include such information as the difference between public comments and a public hearing.

DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER People and pets should be prepared

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com When the weather outside is frightful, Nico the long-haired Chihuahua wears his fleece and suede weather-resistant jacket with matching booties.

Coat and boots notwithstanding, the 5-year-old, 10-pound rescue dog will not stay outside more than absolutely necessary, said his owner, Michelle DiDomenico of Batavia.

“He makes a quick break for it,” DiDomenico said. “I’m ready for spring.”

With memories still fresh from last winter’s polar vortex and a recent week of intense cold, dressing properly for the weather is a must for both people – and animals – as winter remains in effect for several more weeks.

The fourth- and fifth-grade hallway at Wild Rose Elementary School in St. Charles reflected that point this week, as coats of every color were hung – orange, teal, purple, red, pink, green, striped, pink and blue plaids, rainbow and tie-dye.

Children also had boots of every type and color, as well as sequined earmuffs, flowered headbands and hats with ear flaps.

Principal Donna Clavelli said it all was necessary.

“If they’re going to play in

the snow on the playground, they need to have boots, snow pants, a winter coat, hat and gloves,” Clavelli said, delineating each requirement. “If they have only boots with no snow pants, they have to stay on the blacktop. If they have snow pants and no boots, they have to stay on the blacktop.”

Clavelli said the goal is to allow them to play, but to be sure they stay dry when they come back in. She said students were not allowed to play outside during the recent extreme cold weather, but this week, they could.

The Illinois Department of Public Health website advises dressing in several layers of lightweight clothing on cold winter days instead of one or two layers of thick or heavy clothing. The air between the layers is what acts as insulation to keep a person warmer, a concept with solid science behind it.

Assistant physics professor Ted Eltzroth at Elgin Community College wrote in an email that dressing for the cold means reducing the transfer of body heat “by conduction, which usually means using a gas for the insulating layer [that is] the air between layers.”

Kyle Julian, an employee at Geneva Running Outfitters, said it is recommend that outdoor runners wear no more than three layers.

“The rule is to dress like it’s 15 to 20 degrees warmer because you don’t want your body to sweat too much,” Julian said. “If you’re running into the wind, the sweat will freeze.”

Julian said a base layer made of a synthetic or merino wool – not cotton – is recommended. The base layer is followed by an insulating or thermal layer that can be cotton, and then a wind- and water-resistant shell for an outer layer to keep out the wind.

“The cold temperatures are coming from that wind chill, and you want to be able to cut that wind and help keep you warm,” Julian said.

DiDomenico’s care of her little Nico fits with advice from Beth Drake, executive director of the Anderson Animal Shelter in St. Charles Township.

“There’s lots of breeds that are OK outside in extreme temperatures,” Drake said. “But short-haired and small dogs find it hard to be outside when it’s really cold. Even big dogs walking in snow can get snow packed up between their toes.”

Drake recommended booties for dogs, although it may take a while for the dogs to get used to wearing them on their feet.

“If you listen, your dog will tell you how tolerant he is of the cold,” Drake said. “If a dog is hesitant or stops in its tracks and lifts a paw, cut the walk short.”

Natalie Spelman, whose family owns Spelman Photo in Geneva, said her 2-year-old pit bull rescue dog Luigi wears winter boots and a coat for their daily walks in Chicago, where she lives.

County coroner faces $123K overage in 2014

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Kane County coroner’s 2014 financial problems continue to plague him in 2015.

The coroner’s office had a general fund overage of $123,464 in 2014, Auditor Terry Hunt told the Judicial and Public Safety Committee on Thursday.

He said the bulk of the extra expenses came from five areas: per diem ($32,220), autopsies ($37,705), DuPage County fees ($35,130), financial consulting ($7,600) and fuel ($7,212).

Coroner Rob Russell said he had every intention of bringing the committee a resolution about the overage, but action at the Finance Committee last year prevented it.

Russell at that time was seeking a $140,000 budget adjustment, but the motion died for lack of a second. Because of this, the resolution technically remains at Finance, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said, citing Robert’s Rules of Order.

The issue is of concern because some bills need to be paid, Russell said.

Hunt said the county pays for payroll and all related benefits, autopsies and all related expenses, and the DuPage County fees. Other items are being suspended for payment because of the overage, and the coroner’s “hands are tied” until the County Board approves a budget adjustment, Hunt said.

The overage includes about $17,000 in discretionary expenses, Hunt said.

Although the committee couldn’t take action, member Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora, suggested taking the $17,000 out of Russell’s 2015 budget.

In other news, Russell said plans to reopen the morgue by Thursday were hampered by an unacceptable installation of the new freezer and cooler. Operations Staff Executive Don Biggs said fixing the problems will likely take another 10 to 12 days.

“This is just the nightmare that will not end,” said Committee Chairman Cristina Castro, D-Elgin.

The morgue has been closed since June, when mold was found in the facility. It underwent renovations during the closure, and forensic operations were outsourced to DuPage County.

GENEVA – The Kane County sheriff’s decision to reduce the number of federal inmates at the jail has a potential $1.4 million impact, and County Board members want to know how that loss will be reconciled in the 2015 budget.

“No matter how you see it in your head, you’re [$1.4 million] short,” Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora, told Sheriff Donald Kramer at the Judicial and Public Safety Committee meeting Thursday.

The first-term sheriff – who vowed Thursday he will operate within budget and come in under budget this year – said the decision to reduce the U.S. Marshal prisoner count was because of inadequate staffing.

Staffing is down by at least 10 percent, he said. He said shortages are because of nine situations involving the Family and Medical Leave Act and several workers compensation cases.

To reduce the workload, he said, he was faced with two options: hire more people or reduce the inmate population.

He chose the latter and set the operational capacity to 547 inmates. The jail has 10 cell blocks, which can each hold 64 inmates, he said.

“I did what was necessary to protect the correctional facility,” Kramer said.

The county’s agreement with the U.S. Marshal’s Service wasn’t terminated, but the agency did take back 43 inmates, Kramer said.

Because the revenue per federal inmate is $88.32, the daily revenue loss of those 43 prisoners is $3,798, Executive Finance Director Joe Onzick said.

For the year, Onzick said, that would mean a loss of $1,386,276 – or 5.3 percent of the sheriff’s total 2015 budget. He said fully cutting the program would result in a $2.5 million loss, or 9.5 percent of the sheriff’s total budget.

If the $1.4 million in revenue can’t be replaced, Onzick said, $1.4 million in cuts must be made as soon as possible.

“We do not have any other alternative,” Onzick said.

Committee members expressed frustration that Kramer didn’t have a discussion with the committee before taking action and asked him how he plans to make up the lost revenue.

“I don’t want us to look at this 12 months from now and say, ‘Well, we weren’t over budget at that point,’ because technically we’re counting on

“It’s time,” Owings said.

“We could sell it to someone, but no one has offered.”

The Beadhive features beads made of Swarovski crystal, Czech glass, semi-precious stones, such as garnets and amethysts, seed beads, sterling silver and gold-filled clasps, as well as other supplies and tools.

Bead stores and small businesses in general suffered during the Great Recession in 2008, Owings said, and their shop was no different.

Owings said how the partners got started was a case of serendipity, with Owings getting the idea after visiting a similar store in Saugatuck, Michigan.

Matt Pioch, of the 40W800 block of Old LaFox Road in Campton Hills, was cited by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office for possession of a suspended driver’s license in St.

Charles, Hoffman said. Kane County Sheriff’s spokesman Pat Gengler confirmed a ticket was issued in the Tuesday incident.

Pioch was a passenger in a car that was chasing a 17-yearold girl in another car because the girl supposedly stole some medication from him, Hoffman said. The incident first was reported at 3:58 p.m. on Tuesday on Burlington Road north of Route 64 in Campton Hills, he said.

The cars headed east toward St. Charles and passed

through county jurisdiction, so the Kane County Sheriff’s Office became involved, Hoffman said.

Police caught up to the cars in the area of Dean and 17th streets in St. Charles, and some motorists observed multiple squad cars near the intersection past 4:50 p.m.

Items valued at $595 were reported stolen from an unlocked car parked in the 2600 Fargo Circle. They included $315 in winning lottery tickets, 15 prescription pills, a gym bag, gym shoes, yoga pants and gift cards.

A $120 pair of sunglasses and $100 golf club gift card were reported stolen from a car parked in the 1000 block

of Lewis Road. A digital camera valued at $100 and $30 in a change maker were reported stolen from a car parked in the 1900 block of Heather Drive.

A credit card and change in a cup holder were reported stolen from a car parked on the 1900 block of Allen Drive.

Four other vehicles reportedly were entered, but nothing was taken, according to police reports. Two cars were in the 600 block of Redwing Drive, one was in the 800 block of Redwing and one in the 2000 block of Heather Road.

OBITUARIES MAX H.R. KNOECKLEIN SR. Born: Sept. 7, 1920; in Germany Died: Jan. 14, 2015; in St. Charles, IL Max H. R. Knoecklein, Sr., age 94, of St. Charles, recently of Chatham, New Jersey, passed away peacefully in his sleep, in the early morning of Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Pine View Care Center in St. Charles.

He was born September 7, 1920, in Germany, the son of Karl and Julie (Herzog) Knocklein.

Max served his country as a medic and translator in the United States Army, during World War II. He later worked as a textile engineer for Eastman Kodak in New York. Max was a train advocate and enjoyed his expansive toy train collection.

He was a charter member of the Trains Collector Association of America. He also enjoyed playing the trumpet and piano. Max had a great sense of humor and will be dearly missed by those who loved him.

Max is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Margaret (Horton); sons, Karl (Meredith) of NY, David (Donna) of ID, George (Pam) of CT, and Max (Mary) of St. Charles; grandchildren, Julie, Katheryn (Welles), Teresa, Phillip (Loralee), Christopher (Ashley), Allison, and Matthew; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Wynter and Griffin; brother Herman (Betty) of NC; and many dear nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

THE WASHINGTON POST Education Secretary Arne Duncan tells a story that was distressingly familiar for children of color before the implementation of the No Child Left Behind law.

At his mother’s after-school tutoring program on the South Side of Chicago, he worked with a young man who thought he was headed to college. The student was on track to get his high school diploma – on the honor roll, in fact, with a solid B average.

But, Mr. Duncan discovered, his tutee also was functionally illiterate.

In those years, no one was held accountable for student achievement, and schools routinely ignored and concealed the problems of struggling students, especially poor black and Hispanic students. Returning to that way of operating should be unthinkable, but that is unquestionably what will happen if testing and accountability requirements are gutted from federal law.

Rewriting No Child Left Behind is a priority for Congress and the administration. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., chairman of the Senate education panel, aims to bring a bill to the Senate floor next month. Everyone agrees the law should be improved based on the experience of the past decade-plus. Some of its provisions are overly punitive or prescriptive. But its underlying principle is sound: Schools need to know whether students are learning, and they should do something about it when they aren’t. Writing that principle into law was a civil rights achievement that must not be undone.

The achievement is threatened by an unholy alliance between conservatives who oppose any federal role in education and teacher unions, which claim to favor progressive policies until those policies begin to bring accountability to the teaching profession. These opponents of the law would like to eliminate the requirement that students be tested annually in math and reading in grades three to eight and once in high school.

Mr. Alexander’s draft bill doesn’t take a stand on this, instead presenting a range of options in what the senator characterized as an attempt to start a dialogue about testing.

That dialogue should start with a fact: The law has worked. The performance of poor and minority students has improved in the past 10 to 15 years.

Any member of Congress should be embarrassed to even contemplate returning to an era when the absence of annual measurement allowed failure to be swept under the rug.

Charity chains and quarter-cart groceries Our family isn’t poor. Compared to the rest of the world, we live like Donald Trump.

The book “The Haves and the Have-Nots” states the poorest of Americans (with average annual incomes of $6,800) are richer than 68 percent of the world.

In contrast, Kane County’s median household income (according to MuniNet Guide) tops $71,000.

Together, my wife and I, parochial school teachers, exceed that figure, bringing home enough bacon to allow us to splurge on Trader Joe’s scrumptious Uncured Apple Smoked Bacon.

We normally shop the community’s retail stores, lured by all sizes and colors seductively displayed, a rhododendron aroma, and One Direction piped in. What’s not to like, from local villages’ downtown shops to Chicago Premium Outlets; from the Geneva Commons to Von Maur? I can’t resist Kohl’s 15 percent to 30 percent scratch-off sales, or the multi-pocketed shirts and pants at Dick’s and Gander Mountain.

So, don’t pity me when I tell you how much I love browsing The Salvation Army, Goodwill and the bag-your-own-groceries Aldi. I get a kick out of paying almost nothing for something that elsewhere I’d pay a relative fortune for, even if the shirt’s slightly faded or the

So, why do I feel ashamed admitting this, like an alcoholic confessing to going on a bender?

Because there’s a stigma attached to shopping charity chains and box-displayed grocery stores.

Before going in, I consider donning Groucho glasses or a clone trooper helmet. Pawing through a rack of XL shirts, I’m wary that friends might spot me through the front window and think “NOCD” (Not Our Class, Dearie), or even wander in, mistaking The Salvation Army for Joseph A. Bank.

Or maybe they go in to satisfy their own guilty pleasure, buying new or like-new for 10, 20, even 50 times less than retail. Today, cheap is chic.

Moreover, it’s fun. Visiting The Salvation Army’s new megastore at Randall and Route 38, I tried on a pair of boots first owned by Bigfoot. I could wear them for ice fishing or riding out a tsunami. New, they’d have gone for more than $150. A torn piece of paper, handwritten in crayon, safety-pinned to a boot’s tongue, announced: $2.06.

I figured the 6 cents covered the

decorative blue paint drops on one toe.

Checking out, I exclaimed, “Great boots!”

“Cheaper,” the cashier said, and we laughed.

That’s the other thing: Employees working these stores have personalities. They show emotion.

They quip.

But wait! There’s more! Fellow shoppers become instant friends, as if lifelong members of the same club. Whether directing someone to men’s hats or paying forward Aldi’s 25-cent shopping cart, you share the ineffable bond of outliers.

One request. If we run into each other at the post office, and you recognize a small thread leaking out the same buttonhole of the shirt you gave to Goodwill, don’t say anything to spoil my mood.

Just compliment my sartorial taste as if it were yours – which it is – and move on.

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Michael Doranski forgot his cue before a large Batavia Fine Arts Centre gathering Thursday night.

Or did he?

In the theater, an iconic song from “Annie Get Your Gun” begins, “Anything you can do, I can do better.” Doranski might have been reprimanded if this were a high school production, but in reality, he more than delivered as Batavia’s wrestling team clinched an Upstate Eight Conference River Division title on the biggest stage this side of next month’s state meet.

So what if Doranski’s younger brother, Dylan, earned a fall 11 seconds faster in the previous bout at 113 pounds? Both flurrying, first-period victories – in 20 and 31 seconds, respectively – established a crucial early tone as the Bulldogs threw decorum out the window in a 43-14 win.

One week from tonight, the BFAC, as it’s colloquially called, will host “Ballroom with a Twist.” Wrestling already is replete with those, among other body contortions, so call Thursday “Regular Season Wrestling with a Capacity Crowd.”

And color athletes from both Batavia (7-0 UEC River) and Geneva (5-2) giddy.

Montgomery-based Technical Theatre Services provided lighting and video. The treatment included an overhead display of the action in the center circle of the mat. If the Bulldogs and Vikings tangled on the outer edges, all that was shown was the large gold Batavia “B” at the center.

Batavia’s ordinary wrestling duals in the adjacent gymnasium feature a few theatrical elements of their own.

Most of the lights go dim, leaving only the mat illuminated to create an arena-like atmosphere. Before each bout, Bulldogs athletes traditionally hear a snippet of personally selected music as they

Bulldogs coach Scott Bayer recalls the casual introduction of the idea to wrestle in the BFAC, pitched a few years ago. It finally evolved into a reality this season, with some aspects of the event mirroring a play.

The Batavia athletic department spent “a good amount of money promoting and marketing” the dual, Bayer said. An official poster tabbed the night “The Event,” and also promised a de facto undercard.

Batavia’s drumline performed after a handful of students vied for a Visa gift card in a dress like your favorite BHS teacher costume contest.

A sumo costume match featuring members of both schools’ athletic coaching staffs preceded the night’s first bout, a 19-6 major decision victory for Batavia’s Josh Fischer against James Warwick at 106 pounds.

Although the audience included dozens of youth wrestlers from the Batavia Pinners program, as well as parents well-versed in the ways of the mat, public address announcer Brian Drendel opened the uh, show, by offering a refresher course on team scoring.

There were victories by all varieties save the technical fall, a five-point team tally awarded for defeating your opponent by at least 15 points.

Batavia rolled to a 19-0 lead when Seth Winkle followed Fischer and the Doranski brothers with a 3-2 decision against Ryan O’Brien at 126.

Geneva’s Colin Parsons answered with a major decision at 132, giving the Vikings their first points. Mike Huck (major decision, 145) and Brock Perry (decision, 152) helped Geneva tighten the team gap to 22-11, but the Bulldogs responded to seize control.

Matt Bohorski (160), Jake Birkhaug (170) and Derek Nutley (182) edged their Vikings counterparts by no more than three points. The nine team points created a 31-11 Bulldogs advantage and clinched the outcome.

Dylan Uzumecki (220) and Mitch Krusz (285) punctuated Batavia’s win with falls in the night’s penultimate and final bouts.

The next critical step for the Bulldogs is to raise their game against some of the tougher teams in the conference, such as their Tri-Cities rivals.

“I think they’re all great teams and I think we are capable of hanging with them, it’s just mentally we need to be ready for the games,” Batavia point guard Bethany Orman said. “Like the first quarter, we were kind of slow, and in those games, we can’t have slow first quarters against teams like that. We just need to be focused and ready to go right in the beginning of those games, and I think the odds might be in our favor if we do that.”

Orman made three 3-pointers on the night; she and Shea Bayram scored nine points apiece for the Bulldogs.

West Chicago attempted a whopping 19 free throws during the fourth quarter as Batavia’s reserves brought the game to a physical conclusion against an attack-minded Wildcats offense.

KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland wrestling team challenged Geneseo in a home matchup Thursday, but ultimately fell short, 32-28, in a Northern Illinois Big 12 dual.

The Knights’ victories included a major decision from Austin Parks at 195 pounds.

Kaneland opened a 9-0 lead after an overtime victory from Matt Redman, and still led, 12-10, after George Strang was victorious at 145.

West Chicago 45, St. Charles North 21: North senior Ethan Fredericks won by fall at 170 pounds, while classmates Conrad Noverini (132) and Steve Collins (145) also were victorious on senior night.

“We had a couple injuries and things, so we had a couple starters out so shuffled those around,” North Stars coach Ben Hummel said. “Then it was senior night, so we tried to move things around to get all of the seniors matches. We had a good group of five guys to recognize.”

Chris Ting (126) and Quentin Clehouse (152) are North’s other seniors.

WEST CHICAGO – After watching his Batavia girls basketball team limit West Chicago to four points during the second quarter Thursday, Bulldogs coach Kevin Jensen liked his team’s chances of remaining in command.

The second half reinforced Jensen’s optimism as Batavia cruised to a 56-33 Upstate Eight Conference River victory.

Of West Chicago’s two baskets in the second quarter, one came in the closing seconds, bringing the Wildcats within 27-14.

“Quite frankly, when we get ahead, our defense has been pretty solid where it’s hard for teams to [come back],” Jensen said. “I told them at halftime, I said I hope our offense gets better, but I don’t know how much it has to get better because I’m not sure we’ll allow more than 30 points tonight, and if it weren’t for those free throws at the end, we wouldn’t have.

“So I think that’s part of the putting [teams] away. Some people hear

putting away and they’re thinking scoring. I hear putting away and I’m thinking, yeah, we scored, but putting the locks down where they’re not getting a whole lot on offense.”

Considering how dominant Batavia (10-11, 4-3 UEC River) was for most of the night, the Wildcats’ 10-9 advantage after the first quarter was a head-scratcher.

Jensen said the Bulldogs’ sluggish Hannah Frazier start mostly had to do with figuring out ways to involve standout forward Hannah Frazier (20 points, eight rebounds) in the post without floating dangerous passes into traffic.

“When teams just decide to absolutely surround Hannah early, it just took our guards a little bit to kind of get their feet under them,” Jensen said. “But we also took a lot of decent shots that were good shots that didn’t fall at first, and we shot some of the same ones in the second half that fell.”

Stars align for STC veterans, Hawks As military men past and present, Charles Strohmaier and grandsons Steven, Kevin and Brian can relay numerous travel tales.

On Sunday, the men are set to add a rather notable shared excursion to a place not far from their home base in St. Charles.

The Blackhawks will honor the family during the national anthem before a 5 p.m. game against Dallas at the United Center as part of the club’s partnership with the United Service Organizations. Typically, one veteran and one active military member are recognized, but the Strohmaiers presented a unique case.

Because of the looming Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday weekend, Charles and Susan Strohmaier’s three sons each will be able to return home to accompany their 87-year-old grandfather, a World War II veteran.

“They’ve given so much of their time and dedication to this country,” said Charles Strohmaier, the boys’ father, who has a different middle initial than his own dad.

Together during the holiday season, the family gathered to watch the Blackhawks when it could.

“They’re all avid Hawks fans,” the younger Charles Strohmaier said. “Like anything else in Chicago.”

The Blue Demons went 161-4 this past season, with their only loss coming in their final game, an NCAA tournament match against Wisconsin. But until then, it was 20 straight games without an “L,” and Frasca, a freshman, was right in the middle of all of it.

“Coming in as a freshman and having the season that we did, it was absolutely incredible,” Frasca said. “It’s a season that any freshman would dream of.”

Being a freshman goalkeeper on a team as experienced and successful as DePaul means Frasca didn’t see any onfield action during the season.

But the Rosary alumna was certainly along for the ride and said her and her teammates took upon themselves for the bench to play a positive role

in cheering on the rest of the team.

“Even though I didn’t get on the field, I felt I was just as much a part of the team as anyone else,” she said. “Being at practice, supporting everyone, traveling, I definitely that DePaul really made it feel like home. For all the freshmen that didn’t get a chance to play, the bench was Lauren Frasca so supportive.

And the season that we did have was just awesome, and to be a part of something like that is unbelievable.

“Coming in as a freshman, as a goalie especially, it’s hard to find your spot on the field, considering there’s only one that plays. So it’s important to always be positive and never stop working in practice, on and off the field. Everyone

ON CAMPUS Vinnie Duber worked so hard to get their time on the field, and when you don’t get that time, you don’t stop working. And I thought that the atmosphere that the bench provided for everyone else that worked hard enough to play on the field was awesome.”

Being on the bench didn’t mean a divide with those teammates who did get a lot of playing time. Frasca used her roommate, Elizabeth Endy, who was one of the featured players, as an example of how that supportive attitude was shared by everyone on the team.

“My roommate, who was the center-back, she played 90 minutes every game … and she wasn’t a girl to come around

and say, ‘Oh, I played so much and you didn’t.’ She was so supportive of everyone, not only me but everyone that didn’t play as a freshman,” Frasca said. “I thought it was cool like that.”

Frasca said there’s no better motivator for her own future success than the success she got to witness first-hand this season. She’s doing everything she can to eventually become an integral part of the Demons’ continued march to program prosperity.

“I think this offseason, I’m working on getting stronger, running more and picking up my fitness to be a contributor on this team,” she said. “And then next year I’m hoping to be in the backup position and have my coaches be just as confident to put me in in case our starter had an injury or something, I would want them to look at me with just as much confidence to know I’ll get the

job done.

“As a freshman this year, just to see what the team success was, it’s like next year you want to do this better, you want to make it to the second round of NCAAs. I hope my senior year, I leave everything I have on the field, just like the seniors did this year. I think the seniors really did set an example with how hard they worked from their freshman year. Four years ago, DePaul was nowhere near where they are today, and I think it does take four years of hard work and motivation to really finish how they did.

And I think by my senior year, DePaul could be twice as better, and I’m hoping that we are.”

Like that old Beatles song, this refrain swells up from Bears fans and armchair rebuilders of Chicago’s lousy NFL team.

If recent Broncos coach Fox is named the Bears’ coach soon, the love-fest is won because he’s the darling of the day. After a 5-11 season, a second pitiful year of no defense and the firing of just about every coach who helped stir the pot of toad eyes and frog warts, the Bears are ready to cook.

Or so it seems.

Lots of teams have gone from underachieving to deep in the NFL playoffs from one season to the next after making some critical changes and acquisitions. We’ll mention the New England Patriots here. They went from 5-11 in 2000 to Super Bowl champs in 2001.

Sure, you can bring up the fact a quarterback named Tom Brady threw only three passes for the Patriots as a rookie in 2000 and 413 in 2001.

You can mention that. And I’ll say, yes, that’s what I’m talking about.

Dramatic change can happen overnight, provided you

get some real drama infused.

Which is what the Bears and their fans are hoping new general manager Ryan Pace and prospective veteran coach Fox can bring.

Hence, the love affair.

Blooming like puppy love, with hormones clouding common sense.

Let’s remember the way we fall in love with coaches, players and managers, then forget they existed. Whatever happened to Mike Shanahan, the former coach who was everyone’s darling a month ago?

Hmmm?

Todd Bowles, the Arizona Cardinals’ defensive coordinator? Quietly gone to the New York Jets. Jim Harbaugh?

Took millions to join the “amateur game” at Michigan.

Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn?

Nowhere yet, but he reportedly is the Atlanta Falcons’ top candidate.

These were all hot Bears prospects. But now it’s Fox, and he might be worthy of all the love. He knows the game.

He has been around. He has taken two teams to the Super Bowl. He became available suddenly and unexpectedly when he and the Broncos parted ways Monday.

We have flavors du jour in Chicago, many of whom are duds or never show up (thankfully). Remember the coveting of NBA star Carmelo Anthony? Of Japanese pitching sensation Masahiro Tanaka?

Or NHL goalie Ryan Miller?

Or manager Ryne Sandberg?

Dusty Baker?

The guy who never has lost a game for your team is the one who is most coveted. So it goes. And dream fellows actually work out occasionally. I’d put pre-injury Derrick Rose in that category. Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. Tom Thibodeau. (We were in love with him, weren’t we?)

But here’s what Fox will confront if he signs with the Bears and comes down from the pedestal upon which he has been placed, the throne that drove the doomed John Keats to write: Still, to hear [his] tender-taken breath, And so live ever – or else swoon to death.

First, Fox must deal with a quarterback who is either a

leech on the program or a misunderstood skill player. Jay Cutler sits in the middle of this franchise like an Easter Island dummy.

Who is he?

Nobody knows, even after six seasons.

Cut him and wacky-butgreatly skilled receiver Brandon Marshall, and the Bears will have to pay out many millions of dollars to them – along with the millions they owe fired coach Mark Trestman and fired general manager Phil Emery.

Keep Cutler and Marshall, and Fox will have his hands full trying to create a new air of winning. Moreover, if Cutler is sent packing, the search for a new quarterback might take years.

Then there’s the vague Bears culture that permeates everything. It comes from being a family-owned operation, one that never has let an outsider fully wrest operational control from the

McCaskey clan, with Ted Phillips there as some sort of Godfather-style consigliere.

What Phillips knows, we’ll never know. So be it.

Fox would have to work with Pace, almost a quarter-century younger than he is, and find all the right assistants. Not easy. But that vibe running through Halas Hall might be the most difficult thing to oust. Since renegade coach Mike Ditka was fired after the 1992 season, the Bears have been to the playoffs only five times.

Then-Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt was the hottest thing going in early 1993. The Bears “won” him, and he went 40-56 in six seasons with them.

Be careful whom you love, folks.

And how far you dream.

For the first time in its history, Northern Illinois will host a major college championship.

The school and the NCAA announced Thursday that the 2017 men’s and women’s golf championships will be at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, the home course for the Huskies.

“This is great news for NIU Athletics, for our very good friends and partners at Rich Harvest Farms and for the entire region,” NIU athletic director Sean Frazier said in a statement. “In 2017, we will welcome the very best college golfers and college golf teams in the country to play an outstanding golf course and to compete for a national cham-

pionship. This is what it is all about! I know that NIU, along with Jerry Rich and his staff at Rich Harvest Farms, will do everything we can to provide a fantastic championship experience for the student-athletes.”

The women’s championship will be May 18 to 24, 2017, with the men running May 25 to 31.

NIU Director of Golf and men’s coach Tom Porten said hosting the NCAA Championships is an important step forward for the Huskies’ golf programs.

“Thanks to the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Golf Committees for giving us this wonderful opportunity,” Porten said in a statement. “It has taken a team effort, led by Sean T. Frazier, Ryan Sedevie and [Director of Facilities] Matt Gonzalez, working with the Rich Fami-

Case in point: My spouse, Mister Z, has been nurturing a scraggly, 6-inch white beard, long hair and bushy eyebrows.

He came home last week with a nicely trimmed look thanks to a visit to Evolve Salon Suites (located in the small strip of businesses just north of the Randall Road Jewel in St. Charles).

Hairdresser Kimm took on the challenge.

(She is Phil’s cousin and so, in that long relationship, he trusts her skills and motives.)

Z had his hair almost long enough to emulate Willie Nelson’s braids. Now he looks more like George Carlin.

I kind of liked the Gabby Hayes look and his chuck wagon style of cooking.

To complete the transition, he stopped for a carry-out lunch – something different. To my delight, he went past all the open spaces behind the Jewel and found Salsa Verde on the Lincoln Highway side.

He had been instructed to bring home a salad to combine with the Lithuanian cheese I had ordered. Right on with the chicken salad he selected. The three-fold, take-home menu promises good things to come.

In the interest of free speech and freedom of the press, I have something to say. Oh, I just started that way to tease my editor.

Really, no big deal.

JOAN KNOWS Joan Arteberry It’s a confession. I tried my best to support Ohio State for the sake of the Big Ten. I watched the game until it was clear the Buckeyes would win. Then I turned off that broadcast and scanned for “Law and Order” re-runs.

It’s just that OSU has a practice of biting my Badgers. Where can I turn? Are the Cubs really on the rise?

Condolences to the family and co-workers of Sue Byrum. The office of the Kane County State’s Attorney and the public it serves will miss her capacities.

St. Charles student to receive Horatio Alger scholarship KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE neighbors@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles East High School student was selected as one out of 106 people nationwide to receive the 2015 Horatio Alger National Scholarship.

Justin S. Bell of St. Charles was chosen by the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, according to a news release.

The Horatio Alger scholarship program is one of the nation’s largest privately-funded, need-based financial aid programs, the release states. The annual scholarships recognize students, who – in the face of adversity – have exhibited a commitment to continuing their education and serving

their communities.

“Our 2015 national scholars are proof that, with great dedication and perseverance, one can overcome the most difficult adversity,” David Sokol, Horatio Alger Association chairman, said in the release.

“With help from the association, this group of talented young people will have the opportunity to pursue their own version of the American Dream. The Horatio Alger scholarship recipients maintain an average grade-point average of 3.7 and a mean SAT score of 1,263, which is more than 250 points above the national average. Scholars come from households with an average

annual income of $15,000 and – because of Horatio Alger Association – each recipient is awarded $22,000 to apply toward the tuition of the college or university of his or her choice.

Scholars also will have access to resources, including assistance for the selection of and preparation for college, and access to guidance and crisis counselors, as well as mentoring programs.

Each new national scholar also will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., this spring to attend the Horatio Alger National Scholars Conference and participate in college-preparedness and other educational sessions.

Recipients will also attend parts of the association’s annual three-day Horatio Alger Awards Induction Ceremonies.

NEIGHBORS BRIEFS Marmion senior honored with service award Marmion Academy senior Blake Turcich of Geneva was one of 10 local students honored with the 2014 Ted Brattin Civic Youth Award. The annual award is presented to Fox Valley youth ages 13 to 19 years old, who – like Brattin – have shown outstanding leadership and selfless service to the community. The award Blake Turcich was presented at a luncheon hosted by the Rotary Club of Aurora in December.

Turcich has volunteered since grade school, states a news release.

He has been a summer camp counselor at Camp Soar, where he works one-on-one with a severely handicapped camper for a week every summer. Turcich also started “Polishing Pals,” a volunteer program of which he and other volunteers go to area nursing homes to polish the residents’ shoes, states the release.

Dear Abby: My husband, “Fred,” lost a lung to cancer 14 years ago due to smoking. He is one of the lucky ones to survive a deadly cancer.

Even though he has only one lung, he continues to smoke “secretly.” I have begged, offered in-house treatment, anything to get him to stop, to no avail. What is troublesome is that Fred is in denial. For the last several weeks, he has blamed his coughing and wheezing on “allergies.” He also chews nicotine gum nonstop. It’s expensive, but he uses it to get his nicotine fix when he’s around me, our family and friends.

I am angry, frustrated and sad that Fred has chosen cigarettes over having a chance to live, enjoy his grandchildren and grow old with me. Sometimes I think he doesn’t deserve to still be on this earth because he disregards his health after nearly dying from

Infectious urethritis improves quickly with antibiotics Dear Doctor K: The doctor says I have urethritis. How did I get it?

Dear Reader: Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. Urethritis is quite common, both in men and women. It is more common in younger adults, because they are more likely to be sexually active with multiple partners.

Urethritis is usually caused by one of two types of sexually transmitted infections: Gonococcal urethritis is caused by the bacteria that cause gonorrhea. Gonorrhea is sometimes called clap. Gonorrhea infections are passed from person to person during sexual activity. This includes vaginal, oral and anal intercourse.

Non-gonococcal urethritis is caused by all sexually transmitted bacteria other than gonorrhea.

The most frequent cause is a particular type of bacteria called Chlamydia trachomatis.

You can prevent both of these infections by: • Not having sex; • Having sex with only one uninfected partner; • Consistently using male latex condoms during sexual activity.

Much less often, urethritis results from a physical injury

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff from something like a urinary catheter. Or it may occur because of exposure to a chemical in an antiseptic or a spermicide that causes irritation of the lining of the urethra.

Urethritis usually causes pain or burning during urination and an urge to urinate more frequently. Another symptom is redness around the opening of the urethra.

Men with infectious urethritis may have a yellow discharge from the urethra. Women are less likely than men to have symptoms from gonorrhea and chlamydia.

If you have infectious urethritis, you will be treated with antibiotics. Do not have sex until your antibiotic treatment is complete.

Otherwise, you could spread the infection to your partner. (Your sexual partner or partners should be treated with antibiotics as well.)

Many people have gonorrhea and chlamydia at the same time.

So, if you are treated for gonorrhea, your doctor will probably also treat you for chlamydia. That means you may need to take two types of antibiotics.

Once you start taking antibiotics, infectious urethritis improves rapidly. Even without treatment, symptoms usually go away within three months. However, people continue to remain infectious and spread the bacteria to others, even when they have no symptoms.

Urethritis caused by injury or chemical irritation is rare. You do not need any specific treatment for this type of urethritis. The symptoms will go away if you avoid whatever it was that caused the problem. In the meantime, your doctor may prescribe medication to ease your symptoms.

The bacteria that cause both gonococcal and non-gonococcal urethritis can spread if they are not diagnosed and treated – from a woman’s cervix to her fallopian tubes, for example. There, they can cause permanent scarring and infertility. They also can spread through the blood to other parts of the body, including the heart, liver and joints.

So, if you have symptoms of urethritis, take them seriously and contact your doctor.

Dr. Wallace: A boy invited me to go with him to a dance sponsored by his church and I said I’d go with him. He’s cute and fairly popular, so I was looking forward to having a good time.

He has reneged on both promises. I love him and I know that he loves me, and I pray every night that he will quit.

Most people are aware of the medical problems that are associated with smoking. I wonder if they are aware of the other problems related to smoking? According to the Palo Alto California Medicine Foundation, studies show that onehalf of all infant deaths from fire are caused by fires started by cigarettes.

Dr. Jeffrey Sacs, a Centers for Disease Control epidemiology researcher in Atlanta, Georgia, discovered that cigarettes are the leading cause of death from fire for all ages, cradle to grave.

Dr. Wallace, please print my letter. I want my husband to return smoke-free or at least not smoking in our home. – Young Mom, Ft. Pierce, Florida Dear Mom: Let’s hope your husband will honor your request and reunite with his family. Family unity must be preserved regardless of the sacrifices that must be made! It is possible that your husband and you could come to a temporary compromise by agreeing that he will not smoke while in the apartment and will go outside to light up until he overcomes his tobacco addiction.

As you can see, the auction ground to a halt in two spades, but declarer had no difficulty in winning 11 tricks, losing only to East’s pair of aces.

As soon as the deal ended, North said, “I bid two spades because I assumed my partner had only 11 points.”

It is true, partner might have had only 11, but as we can see, there was no law against his holding more than that, up to 17 or so.

North should have invited game and let partner make the final decision. If South had only 11 points, maybe three spades would have gone down, but if South had any extras, at least they would have reached their making game.

Yes, in this instance, South was not totally guilt-free. He should have tried for game with three clubs over two spades. For example, remove the diamond ace from the North hand, and four spades is still a wonderful contract. But North was more culpable than South.

Bid the value of your hand and let partner worry about his. With a fit, be optimistic; with a misfit, be cautious.
