Preschool programs prepare kids for kindergarten, beyond

By CAROL HAGGAS editorial@kcchronicle.com Kids. They grow up so fast these days. One minute they’re crawling on the floor and saying “mama” and the next they’re ready to start picking out back-toschool clothes.

For parents, those in-between years can be the most significant period of their child’s life, and experts agree that enrolling a child in a preschool program can provide preparation that goes far beyond what they’ll eventually encounter in the classroom.

The Council of Economic Advisers recently reported findings that children who were enrolled in preschool education could likely realize greater earnings potential as adults, while the National Institute for Early Education Research states that children with preschool experience enter kindergarten with better reading, vocabulary and math skills.

They also learn how to be better friends and classmates.

“Kids need the social experience with their peers,” said Krista Mulready, supervisor of early childhood and preschool programs.

“They need to understand how to take direction from a different authority figure than mom or dad.”

The St. Charles Park District offers preschool programs for children ages 2 to 5. Registration for fall 2015 sessions will begin in February for new enrollees.

Preschool programs offered by the St. Charles Park District are available for children ranging from ages 2½ to 5.

In the Twos-Plus preschool program, children will learn the importance of taking turns, walking in line and following directions during 90-minute sessions that meet twice a week.

Pottawatomie Threes preschool sessions meet in either two- or three-day schedules for 2½ hours, during which 3- and 4-yearold children are introduced

Whether it’s being encouraged to raise one’s hand before speaking or how to share a set of crayons, preschool children develop important social skills that will hold them in good stead once they enter the classroom – and throughout life.

“Sharing, patience, cooperation – these are hard concepts to communicate outside a classroom setting,” said Mulready.

“But our programs make them fun and rewarding so children will adopt them naturally and easily.”

to academic concepts, such as name recognition, colors, numbers and shapes. Children enrolled in Pottawatomie Fours and Fives preschool expand on these academic experiences by participating in projects involving science and language arts during two-, three-, or four-day sessions that also run for 2½ hours.

Parents who are interested in learning about the preschool experience are invited to attend one of two open house programs scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 24 or from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5. These annual open houses offer an opportunity for parents to introduce their child to a classroom setting in a stress-free way.

Preschool teachers are on hand to answer curriculum questions and introduce children to the kinds of art, academic and play activities that will await them.

“Parents can see the child’s immediate response to the classroom,” said Mulready, “and they’ll have a greater sense of confidence and familiarity once sessions start.”

More than $1 million in Batavia to survey subdivision residents about existing overhead electric lines upgrades planned for Kane County Courthouse

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Kane County building used by an estimated 170,000 people each year is illequipped to handle such emergencies as fires and medical situations requiring gurneys, officials told members of the County Board on Wednesday.

A $1.5 million investment in a new, larger elevator and life-safety upgrades at the Kane County Courthouse would provide a remedy.

The project, which could be done by the end of July, has the backing of Chief Judge Judith Brawka. She told the Administration Committee that the judges who work in the downtown Geneva facility are willing to endure three months without an elevator, as well as temporary courtroom changes.

“The Third Street courthouse still has a long life ahead of it,” she said in defense of investing in the century-old building.

The structure’s failings include the elevator, which is too small to fit a fully reclined gurney, and inadequate fire equipment, Geneva Deputy Fire Chief Mark Einwich said, noting a need for fire-rat-

ed doors at the stairwells and standpipes.

Standpipes would allow firefighters to connect a pumper truck to the building.

Under existing conditions, Einwich said, firefighters have to drag hoses in from outside, and getting water onto the fire could take 10 to 20 minutes after firefighters arrive, if not longer.

Although there haven’t been any significant incidents at the courthouse in recent memory – a fact Einwich described as fortunate – that shouldn’t preclude the county from planning for them, he said.

Operations Staff Executive Don Biggs presented the bids for the project, which has a total cost of $1.5 million.

Components include an elevator contract for $187,900 and a general trades contract for $875,000, he said.

Committee Chairman Ron Ford, D-Aurora, applauded Biggs for his work, as it took some research.

“I believe this is a worthwhile project,” Ford said.

“The timing is good.”

The committee forwarded the request to the Executive Committee with a recommendation of approval.

BATAVIA – The city plans to survey residents in the Colonial Village subdivision about whether they would like to see existing overhead electric wires buried as part of an improvement project. Colonial Village subdivision is off Route 31, near Lincoln Inn Banquets. Aldermen at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting debated whether the wires should be buried.

Wisconsin-based Power System Engineering Inc. prepared a report for the city looking at the advantages and disadvantages of replacing overhead wires vs. burying them. According to the report, the estimated cost of underground improvements would be about $1.2 million, compared to $481,437 for overhead improvements.

Batavia 1st Ward Alderman Michael O’Brien said he thought going with underground improvements would be the better way to go, but he took note of the project’s cost.

“We don’t have to do it

now, obviously,” O’Brien said.

Batavia Public Works Director Gary Holm told aldermen there was no rush to do the project.

“There is no drop-dead date,” Holm said. “It is functioning. There is nothing wrong with the existing infrastructure.”

Other aldermen also backed underground improvements, saying they would be more aesthetically pleasing than overhead wires.

Batavia 2nd Ward Alderman Alan Wolff said he would like to see the residents in the subdivision surveyed to get an idea of what they would like to see, and if they would be willing to help pay for underground improvements. He said going with underground improvements could improve the resale value of homes in the subdivision. City Administrator Bill McGrath said a survey could deliver scientifically sound results.

BUMPS ON EYELIDS That small bump that sometimes appears on either the upper or lower eyelid is caused by a blocked oil gland. A “chalazion” usually disappears in about a month without treatment. However, most patients seek treatment when a chalazion is large enough to block vision or looks unsightly.

The bump that characterizes a chalazion is caused by a blockage in the Meibomian gland on the eyelid, which produces oil in both the upper and lower eyelids. Chalazia are sometimes confused with styes, which, unlike chalazia, are caused by infections and are usually painful. In addition, chalazia are usually found away from the edge of the eyelid while styes are most often found right on the eyelid edge.

P.S. Home care for a chalazia includes a warm compress to the eyelid several times a day for about ten minutes at a time. If the chalazion does not heal after treatment, it can be surgically removed.

places $84.2M referendum on April ballot

NORTH AURORA – Voters in April will decide whether West Aurora School District can borrow $84.2 million in bonds to pay for building projects throughout the district, including to North Aurora schools.

The West Aurora School Board on Monday unanimously approved putting the question on the April 7 election ballot. The proposed list of projects would include constructing a four-classroom addition at Fearn Elementary School in North Aurora in order to eliminate two mobile classrooms at the school. The estimated cost of the addition is $1.4 million.

In addition, the referendum would help pay for installing air-conditioning throughout Schneider Elementary School and Goodwin Elementary School in North Aurora. Those schools currently are partially air-conditioned, said Tony Martinez, the district’s director of community affairs.

The estimated cost for air-conditioning improvements at Schneider and Goodwin is $3 million. In addition, West Aurora High School would receive $8.5 million in air-conditioning improvements if the referendum is approved. Only half of the high school currently is air-conditioned.

The district in 2013 closed schools early during a heat wave.

Other improvements proposed at West Aurora High School include a $4.9 million fieldhouse. A full list of improvements proposed throughout the district is on the district’s website.

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – Calling it a “bush-league attempt to try to get three people removed from the ballot,” Tony Valente said he felt “vindicated” after the Kane County Electoral Board on Monday ruled against objections that could have kept him and two other candidates off of the ballot for the April 7 Kaneland School District 302 Board election.

Three current board members – Gale Pavlak, Peter Lopatin and Teresa Witt – and Kaneland teacher Lynn McHenry filed objections to the candidacy of Valente, Jerry Elliott and Dan Nagel. Valente is a current board member. The objectors claimed the three candidates used an incorrect form on nominating positions, one that did not include a township.

But the electoral board ruled neither the Illinois Election Code, nor the Illinois School Code, required candidates to list the township in which they reside on nominating petitions.

Eight candidates are vying for four open positions – incumbents Lopatin, Pavlak, Valente and Witt and challengers Elliott, Nagel, Ryan Kerry and Pamela Vorhees.

Valente, talking after the board adjourned to go into executive session on Monday night at Harter Middle School, said the effort to remove the candidates was “a waste of time.” He said those on the electoral board – Joe McMahon, the state’s attorney for Kane County; Suzanne Fahnestock, director of elections for the county; and Karin Herwick, chief deputy for the county circuit clerk – were “three bright people who know the law. He said the board members who sought to remove him “did that like they do everything on the board. … They do things without doing research.” Despite Pavlak’s claim on Monday that the challenge “wasn’t anything personal,” Valente said he would “adamantly disagree. … It was absolutely personal.”

Lopatin, Pavlak and Witt responded to requests to comment by issuing written statements via email.

Pavlak, the board’s secretary, again claimed the objection was “not personal,” writing that in all capital letters.

“The nominating petitions that they used were not the correct ones,” Pavlak wrote.

“They did not indicate the township … that they live in.

They were the only three candidates that did not use the correct form.” She added, “obviously, we do our research,

otherwise we would not have known about which nomination petition was correct. Mr. Valente used the correct form four years ago when he ran the first time. Why didn’t he this time? Why didn’t the other two?”

Witt, the board’s vice president, wrote, “I find it ironic that [Valente] is claiming someone else didn’t do their homework regarding petition forms, when his own negligence caused him to file incorrectly.” She wrote that using the wrong forms “shows carelessness and a disregard for proper procedure.”

Valente also said such a challenge was an attempt to bully the candidates. Witt took exception to that.

“It is a tactic of real bullies to try to play the part of the victim,” she wrote. “The reality of our situation is that Tony is the only one on our school board who has exhibited bul-

lying behavior. Anyone who has attended a board meeting and has seen his disrespectful attitude and obstructionism can attest to this.”

Lopatin wrote that the challenge was not personal, adding that “the objection was about transparency and clarity. Perhaps future election guides will include more clear guidance to all candidates.”

Lopatin also took exception to Valente’s claims about the board members, writing “I know that my behavior on the school board has been thoughtful, engaged and respectful.”

“I do my homework and come prepared to school board meetings,” Lopatin wrote.

“My questions and comments are intended to help shed light, not just generate headlines. I invite the community to attend Kaneland School Board meetings and see for themselves.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles Police Department is hosting its annual Citizens Police Academy from March 17 through May 14, the department announced this week in a news release.

The Citizens Police Academy is meant to give residents and business owners a better understanding of how the St. Charles Police Department operates.

The class is open free of charge only to St. Charles residents, property and business owners and their employees and approved St. Charles high school juniors and seniors, the release states.

Participants will get to meet officers face to face and discover what daily life is like for them.

The academy will cover such topics as criminal and narcotics investigations, arrest and search procedures, courts, traffic stops, the K-9 unit, Taser, SWAT team, crime scene processing and many others.

The class meets from 7 p.m.

to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays for nine weeks starting March 17. Most of the classes are in the St. Charles Police Department training room, 211 N. Riverside Ave., St. Charles.

When possible, the academy curriculum makes use of both classroom instruction and outside demonstrations.

Students might get an opportunity to do the activity being demonstrated, such as processing a simulated crime scene for fingerprints or getting a radar reading on a moving vehicle, the release states.

The academy has an added benefit of being a sounding board on how the police department is meeting the needs of its citizens, according to the release.

The last academy class will be a graduation ceremony, which will include congratulations from St. Charles Police Chief James Keegan and St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina.

Noel grew up on the East Coast later moving to Chicago. He graduated from Drake University with a degree in accounting. He received his CPA and has been an entrepreneur for many years.

Noel really enjoyed golfing with his friends. However, his greatest joy

AURORA – Two 21-year old Aurora men have been charged with burglarizing and causing damage to Aurora Christian School, 2255 W. Sullivan Road, Aurora, in the early-morning hours of Dec. 31.

Shawn Lopez, of the 200 Shawn Lopez block of LRA Drive, and Avery Payne, of the 500 block of Manor Place, have been charged with burglary to a school.

Avery Payne Lopez also was charged with criminal damage to a school. All of the charges are felonies.

Surveillance stills were posted Tuesday morning on the Aurora Police Department’s Facebook page along with an appeal to the community for assistance in identi-

fying the pair, according to a news release from the Aurora Police Department.

Within hours, someone recognized the alleged burglars and contacted Aurora Area Crime Stoppers with their identities, the release stated.

Aurora Police Investigators, with assistance from the department’s community oriented policing officers, took Lopez and Payne into custody at around 5:50 p.m. Tuesday without incident at Payne’s home.

Police recovered a stolen laptop, charger, mouse, two pairs of athletic shoes, and a pair of basketball shorts that allegedly were taken in the burglary, which occurred at about 12:40 a.m. Dec. 31, the release stated. In addition to the stolen items, a smashed interior window, damage to two steel door, and other damage was located, according to the release.

Police believe Lopez and Payne gained entry to the school via a door that inadvertently had been left open earlier in the day. The total loss was set at $3,235, according to police.

Bond and court information for the pair is pending.

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Fox River and Countryside officials are reminding residents to call 911 when noticing smoke in their home after a residence in St. Charles Township was damaged Wednesday by fire, according to a news release.

Units from the Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District responded to 6N386 Riverside Drive about 6:07 a.m. for a possible structure fire reported by the homeowner, the release states.

Upon arrival at 6:13 a.m., firefighters reportedly saw a single-family ranch home with heavy smoke present from the exterior.

All occupants had fled the structure.

Fire was in the crawl space extending through the floor

into the living area, according to the release. It was under control by 6:30 a.m., the release states, and the fire was limited to the origin in the crawl space and the floor immediately above it.

The fire reportedly caused $10,000 in property damage and $5,000 in content damage.

It is under investigation.

The resident woke up about 4 a.m. and smelled smoke and was awakened again about 6 a.m. with heavy smoke throughout the home, according to the release.

The release indicates there were no smoke detectors present.

“Contact 911 if smoke is noted in your home at any time,” the release states.

“Make sure smoke detectors are present and operating on all floors of the home. Detectors should be tested monthly.”

Kane County Coroner Rob Russell announced Wednesday that he was named as a new member of two area organizations.

Russell was first asked to accept a position on the Policy and By-Laws Committee of the Northeast Multi Regional Training group, a continuing education organization for law enforcement in Cook and the collar counties, states a news release.

The group is responsible for implementing much of the law enforcement training in accordance with the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, the release states.

Russell also was asked to participate in U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk’s Anti-Heroin Task Force, which recently met in Chicago to support the implementation of the “Nasal Narcan Program” to all first responders, states the release.

Kirk has called on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to approve the nasal version of the life-saving drug for public use, citing the success of 32 saves in DuPage County since implementing the program, the release states.

“I am both humbled and excited to be asked to participate in both of these organizations and will do my best to contribute to successful outcomes,” Russell said in the release.

Russell hopes to assist Kirk with addressing the heroin epidemic through the task force. Russell previously worked with U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield, and U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, in their efforts to address the heroin problem in the county, states the release.

The Kane County Coroner’s Office recently became the first accredited coroner’s office in the state.

It’s cool because we’re ‘just friends’ During my winter break a few weeks ago, in between stuffing my face with leftover cookies and spending endless nights staring at a laptop screen, I somehow found time to leave my house. I managed to meet up with a ridiculously amusing guy friend of mine whom I had not seen since this past summer. We hung out on multiple occasions at local cafés and caught up by chitchatting.

Yet, whenever I returned home from spending time with him, my parents would usually get somewhat suspicious. Each time I’d have to explain to them how we’re “just friends,” or that he’s “like my older brother.” Not to mention, he has a girlfriend. Still, I had to remind my parents that what was going on was nothing more than two friends drinking coffee together. One time I even bought soup; how scandalous.

It’s becoming more acceptable for younger adults of the opposite sex to be friendly with one another without it leading to something more. However, there still are some generations (such as my parents) who believe that there’s no such thing as opposite-sex friendships without some secretive meaning behind it all.

So, I’ve decided to tackle a tough question: Can guys and girls just be friends? Now, I’m particularly focusing on people who have one or two really good friends of the opposite gender, rather than on the obnoxious social butterfly.

I’d like to think that guys and girls can simply be friends with each other. Truthfully, I’m not sure if it’s possible. I believe men and women can “just be friends,” but there will always be at least one person that develops a physical attraction to the other sometime during a friendship.

A prime example is the guy friend I mentioned above. The two of us both admitted to having feelings for each other in the past.

In between all the fast food trips, intriguing conversations and goodbye hugs, spending immense time with someone of the opposite sex will cause anybody to fall head-over-heels for the other. Some sensations of stuttering words and rapid beatings of the heart may occur. Those tight knots in the stomach may come when two individuals initially meet, and occasionally it’s further into the friendship. Basically, there will always be one friend who develops some physical attraction to the other that either gets expressed or is never spoken about and is kept hidden (aka, “the friend zone”).

But in today’s culture, many couples in my age group meet by mutual friends anyway. They simply start off as nothing more than “just friends” and grow closer. To me, it seems that at least half of opposite-sex friendships usually have ulterior motives.

It’s evident that more teen and younger-adult relationships are emerging out of already built friendships, rather than meeting people out and about at a random club.

As a hopeless romantic, I like to think that the sweetest relationships that lead to marriage usually form out of solid friendships. After all, society is always pushing the idea that everyone should marry their best friend.

Words of postmaster general frame predicament THE WASHINGTON POST Any time an official retires after devoting 40 years of honorable public service to a single institution, it’s an occasion for thanks and respect. And it’s an occasion to listen carefully to what that veteran has to say upon his departure.

Case in point: the valedictory remarks of Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe on Jan. 6, which reflected the lessons of a lifetime as a U.S. Postal Service employee and manager. Mr. Donahoe’s words properly framed the predicament facing this financially distressed but vital agency as a basic test of democratic governance.

The problems facing the postal service and the changes necessary to address them are well understood, as Mr. Donahoe noted in his speech. The Internet has put the agency’s moneymaker, first-class mail, on a path of inevitable decline while it remains

burdened by an inefficient regulatory structure, unsustainable health and benefit costs and congressional micromanagement. Among the solutions are five-day mail delivery, shifting retiree health costs to Medicare and greater management freedom to revise infrastructure and develop new product lines.

The fundamental obstacle, Mr. Donahoe explained, is not conceptual or technical but political: the resistance to change by the various interest groups that benefit from things as they are, groups that wield significant clout on Capitol Hill.

The mailing industry, he noted, shortsightedly resists greater pricing flexibility for the postal service, even though “the ongoing lack of reform creates more pressure to raise prices – which is what happened this past year.” As for postal unions, Mr. Donahoe said, their “narrow” focus on preserving existing

jobs helps short-circuit the postal service’s attempts to operate more efficiently, such as the innovative retail partnership with Staples stores that was curtailed last year in the face of union protests.

So far, what Mr. Donahoe called the “myopia” of postal-related interest groups has prevailed in Congress, preventing the passage of bipartisan reform legislation aimed at restoring the postal service’s sustainability.

Without a more farsighted approach, the agency can, at best, expect to stagger along its current path of missed innovations and underinvestment. The new Congress has the power to revive the reform bill this year and thereby decide whether the U.S. Postal Service thrives and modernizes – or whether this foundational institution of the U.S. economy continues to crumble under the weight of special-interest politics.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Page to Stage: Writers group’s work brought to life Vero Voce actors to stage screenplays Jan. 16 and 17

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Batavia resident and St. Charles Writers Group member Don Lindman is anxious to see how the actors of the Vero Voce School of Performing Arts will bring his piece “The Accidental Presidency Anthology” to life on the stage.

“I’m intrigued to see how the actors will handle this,” said Lindman, a retired pastor who lives at The Holmstad retirement community in Batavia.

“My imagination says that this could be a really interesting presentation of my work. And I’m intrigued to see how that’s going to happen.”

Lindman’s piece is one of 18 selected writings from the St. Charles Writers Group that will be presented Friday, Jan. 16, and Saturday, Jan. 17, at Vero Voce, 951 State Ave., Suite F, St. Charles, as part of the event Page to Stage.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. each night, and tickets cost $10. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the St. Charles Public Library, where the St. Charles Writers Group meets twice a month.

St. Charles resident Virginia Kammerer, who is one of the original members of the St. Charles Writers Group, which was founded in 1995, said she also is excited to see how her short story “Glittering Generalities” will be transformed to the stage.

breaking out of that situation,” Kammerer said. “The ‘Glittering Generalities’ are all those things that her mother told her for years.”

Kammerer said being a part of the writers group has been beneficial.

“The critiquing is so right on,” she said. “They have helped so many writers become better and make their work not only good, but also salable.”

Page to Stage is the brainchild of Vero Voce owner Dennis Brown and St. Charles Writers Group member Randy Martin, who is making a documentary about the group.

Brown owns Vero Voce with his wife, Dawn Harkins.

Vero Voce also puts on an one-act playwright festival

every year in February.

“I said to Randy, ‘Why doesn’t the writers group do their own little show here, so they get a feeling for how their words feel being spoken as opposed to being read,’” Brown said. “And there seemed to be a lot of interest, and so it came about.”

Brown is one of the actors featured in Page to Stage. He is thrilled to be part of the production.

“Taking the words that someone has put down on a page and making them come to life is outstanding fun,” Brown said. “It’s completely different to having them read. One of my favorite things about any show is watching the process, how a play or indeed a piece of written material changes as it goes through the rehearsal process and comes out to the end to what you actually see on the stage.”

Appropriately enough, Martin’s short story “Books” also will be part of Page to Stage. He is excited about the upcoming production.

“I don’t think this has ever been done before, the way we are doing it,” Martin said. “[Brown] is not just putting on plays, he’s taking poetry, and the actors are doing poetry.

Who could think a poem could be interestingly put on? And he did it.”

The actors themselves are also happy to be part of Page to Stage, such as 10-year-old Madeline Hotham of Batavia.

“I like the short plays,” she said. “They’re really interesting.”

Rick Holinger, who founded the St. Charles Writers Group and moderates its sessions, said Page to Stage represents a unique opportunity for the members of the group. Holinger also is a columnist for the Kane County Chronicle.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to take their writing to the performance level,” Holinger said. “We have semi-annual readings at the writers group in which the members can read their own works, but this involves professional actors and actresses performing their works, dramatizing their works. So, it’s a great opportunity for us.”

Two of Holinger’s works are part of Page to Stage, “Murder Around The Round Table” and “Don’t Take This Personally.”

Like Vero Voce’s playwright festival, Brown said he sees Page to Stage becoming an annual event.

“I definitely think we can do this on a yearly basis,” Brown said. “I’m sure that there’s many pieces that come out of the writers group over a year’s time, and I don’t see any reason we shouldn’t do this again. I think it’s a wonderful idea.”

Winemaker builds layers of flavor in sauvignon blanc When reached by phone just five days before Christmas, Hugh Chapelle wasn’t working on his holiday shopping.

Instead, the winemaker at Quivira was making a quick supply run. Bottling was taking place at the winery.

Yet, on what could be a frantic day where even the tiniest bit of minutiae is under scrutiny, Chapelle defined his philosophy in the vineyard and barrel room in a wide-ranging discussion.

“It’s a little more nerve-racking because there are a lot of little details to attend to,” Chapelle said about bottling day. “At harvest you can be more creative. But once the wine is bottled, the work is done.

There are no more blends or tweaks that can be made.”

While bottling day has a unique set of challenges, so – too – does being married to a winery chef, who had just one request when Chapelle was named winemaker at Quivira.

Winemaker spotlight Hugh Chapelle wanted to build layers in the Quivira Sauvignon Blanc Fig Tree Vineyard, Dry Creek Valley Sonoma County, 2013 ($24).

He did just that and kept a promise he made to his wife, Sandra.

“When I took the job at Quivira, my wife told me that whatever I do, don’t mess up the sauvignon blanc,” Chapelle joked. “Some winemakers are too afraid to pick early and get green and grassy flavors. But I am inspired by the grassiness and minerality of wines from Sancerre, France.”

The Quivira sauvignon blanc is as complex as they come. The fruit was harvested in phases.

That is why it exhibits low-sugar characteristics of fresh cut green grass and hay notes, while it also has the tropical fruit flavors and floral aromas typical of fruit harvested at high-sugar levels.

There was some whole cluster inclusion in the press, and contact with the grape skins was only done for a few hours. Fermented in stainless steel and aged in neutral French oak and acacia wood, the Quivira sauvignon blanc has Asian pear and crisp Granny Smith apple flavors.

It’s a pale straw color in the glass and has a tart peach note on the finish to provide a fuller mouthfeel.

Few sauvignon blanc’s made in California exhibit such a wide spectrum of flavors.

Quivira also has a Dry Creek Sauvignon Blanc ($15) which is an excellent value wine with orange blossom,

Fox Valley Repertory will open its 2015 theater series with Douglas J. Cohen’s musical “No Way To Treat a Lady,” beginning Thursday, Jan. 15, and running through Sunday, March 8.

UNCORKED James Nokes lemon and pineapple flavors. Once again, it’s a grassy note that really stands out.

Just as the sauvignon blanc is unique, so – too – is the zinfandel.

Quivira, Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley, 2011 ($22) had baked, blackberry jam, black cherry and warm black olive note flavors. There are roses on the nose. It’s not super jammy and the tannins are very streamlined, which provides an easy going mouthfeel. While the trend in zinfandel has been robust, full-throttle, high-alcohol wines, Quivira has stunning restraint. At 80 percent zinfandel, there also are petite sirah, carignane, cabernet sauvignon and syrah in the final blend.

“It’s a zinfandel made by a former pinot noir winemaker,” said Chapelle, who previously made the Burgundian varietal at Flowers on the Sonoma Coast and at Lynmar Estate in the Russian River Valley. “One of the things that attracted me to Quivira was the old-school style zinfandel. It was like a claret. While other zinfandels went overripe and jammy, [Quivira] always held out.

They embraced the old world-style field blend.”

It’s interesting that Chapelle has a background making pinot noir, as grenache can share similarities in flavor profile and finicky nature during the growing season.

With a pinot noir-like nose, Quivira’s grenache has cherry pie and strawberry flavors. There are hints of rosemary and thyme in a wine that is rich, yet balanced with youthful tannins.

Wine 101 Next up for Quivira is a multiyear program to make an estate wine from Goat Trek Vineyard, which overlooks Dry Creek Valley between 1,100 and 1,300 feet.

“We’d like a signature red blend to come from there,” Chapelle said.

“But, it’s a younger site and is a work in progress.”

‘Lady’ opens Fox Valley Repertory season PLANIT KANE planitkanenews@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Fox Valley Repertory will open its 2015 theater series with Douglas J. Cohen’s musical “No Way To Treat a Lady.”

“No Way To Treat a Lady” will be previewed Thursday, Jan. 15, through Friday, Jan. 23, and the show will open Saturday, Jan. 24, and continue through Sunday, March 8. Showtimes will be 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays. Special Thursday performances will take place at 8 p.m.

Jan. 15 and 22 and 2 p.m. Jan. 29, Feb. 12 and 19, and March 5. The show is rated PG-13.

Based on the best-selling novel and Academy Award-winning movie by William Goldman (“The Princess Bride,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”), “No Way to Treat a Lady” received its successful off-Broadway world premiere in 1987 at the Hudson Guild Theatre in New York, according to a news release.

The musical is directed by John Gawlik, with music direction by Jeffrey Poindexter and choreography

by Christie Kerr.

“Each year we look at several different scripts to consider as part of our season,” said Gawlik in the release. “We like to explore newer works that haven’t been produced yet in the Fox Valley area, and this show fits the bill perfectly. It’s a funny, musical-comedy thriller set in the gritty

New York City of 1970. The score is terrific, and with just four actors playing multiple roles, it’s a real treat to watch.”

Four actors play 17 roles in “No Way to Treat a Lady,” a story that follows detective Morris Brommell, who chases a murderous master of disguises through New York City, unraveling a tale involving detectives, mothers and socialites, states the release.

The cast includes Kellie Cundiff (previously in Fox Valley Rep’s “Sisters of Swing”), Christopher Davis, Carol Rose (previously in “Sisters of Swing” and “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?”) and Ryan Naimy (previously in “Christmas on Broadway” and “Forever Plaid”).

The rest of Fox Valley Repertory’s 2015 theater series will include “Unnecessary Farce” (March 26 through May 24), “The Bikinis” (June 11 through Aug. 16), “Maybe Baby It’s You” (Aug. 27 through Oct. 25) and “A Christmas Survival Guide” (Nov. 5 through Dec. 27).

Season subscriptions start at $80 for five show-only tickets. Tickets to “No Way to Treat a Lady” cost $32 for Friday and limited Thursday performances; and $42 for Saturday and Sunday performances.

With the state series approaching – regionals begin the week of Feb. 2 – Beitzel, a

fourth-year varsity member, has new rhetoric material with which to work.

The delivery, however, remains the same.

“She’s really calm. She’s always positive. She’s always smiling,” Grace Ginsberg said.

As Hostman can attest, Beitzel has personified those qualities since well before knowing what perseverance was.

If St. Charles North is going to emerge from this weekend as a serious contender in the Upstate Eight Conference River race, the North Stars will have earned the distinction.

Dates with powerhouse opponents Geneva (11-2, 4-1 UEC River) on Friday and St. Charles East (14-1, 6-0) on Saturday should be a tell-tale for the North Stars’ conference ambitions.

North (11-6, 5-1) has yet to face Geneva this season but has played the Saints twice – once in Thanksgiving tournament play, once in conference action. The Saints won both of those early-season meetings by double digits.

North visits Geneva at 7:15 p.m. Friday and will face East at home at 6 p.m. Saturday.

“It’s going to take everything we have, mentally and physically, just because they are two outstanding teams both having really good years, so it’s going to take everything we have,” North senior guard Jake Ludwig said.

The North Stars were 2-4 after six games, with two of those losses coming against East. The North Stars have tweaked their rotation and played much better basketball in recent weeks, and coach Tom Poulin said he is “very excited” to measure that improvement against Geneva and East.

“This group always has responded well to challenges,” Poulin said. “They’ve responded well when they’ve felt like they needed to prove something. This is a massive challenge for us. You have two state-ranked teams and on top of it, it’ll go a long way in determining a conference champion. It’s not the end of the race but it’s a huge weekend as far as that’s concerned.”

North is outsized against many opponents but that will be the case to an extreme against the towering Vikings. Against East, one of the challenges will be keeping Ludwig on the floor. In the first game against East this season, a hard fall slowed Ludwig after a hot start, while foul trouble sidelined Ludwig for an extended stretch of the second matchup.

Ludwig is intent on avoiding cheap fouls this time, which can be difficult when defending slippery Saints guard Cole Gentry.

“I have to be smarter mentally this game and not make it too personal,” Ludwig said.

Poulin acknowledged facing Geneva and East on consecutive days is not ideal, but given the high stakes, this is no week for moping.

“I’d rather have a day or two to prepare [in between],” Poulin said. “Definitely you’d rather have practice, but that’s not the way the schedule worked out, so we have to take the challenge head on and give it our best shot, from the coaching staff all the way through the roster.”

Although it might sound puzzling to some, Gaspari’s recent decision to remove himself from the coaching equation at Batavia for new horizons at Aurora University will allow his Mike Gaspari counterparts to move about the Bulldogs’ program more freely, too.

Gaspari, 59, officially joined AU coach Rick Ponx’s staff as quarterbacks coach this

month after a three-decade run at Batavia, first as head coach and then as offensive coordinator.

“It all had to do with the younger guys who were coaching and not getting an opportunity as long as I was there,” Gaspari said. “As great as it was and as much as I could have gone on and continued, the past few years didn’t always feel right because of that.”

Gaspari went 135-122 in 26 seasons as Batavia head coach from 1985 to 2010. He qualified for the playoffs 14 times in his final 20 seasons after a 1242 run from 1985 to 1990. The Bulldogs earned playoff berths in each of his four seasons as offensive coordinator, as well, including an IHSA Class 6A state championship in 2013.

“I think the key thing was getting John Fox hired – that was a tremendous help for us to change the culture in the building,” Elway said after that season. “Many times when you go through a streak that we went through, the hardest thing to change is the culture and trying to get the winning mentality back in the players’ minds.

“I think that’s what John did a tremendous job with. We won a lot of close gams. A lot of times when you go through losing streaks, that’s the hardest thing to do. Ponx, a longtime assistant at NCAA Division III programs Ohio Northern and North Central College, consulted Gaspari in early December after finishing 1-9 in his first season as AU head coach.

“I was planning to call him in and ask how do you turn a program around,” said Ponx, who recruited Gaspari’s son, Noel, a 2012 Batavia product, to North Central.

More than satisfied by that part of the discussion, Ponx made like his playbook and took a shot.

“I just thought it was going to be a conversation,” Gaspari said. “I never thought a job offer was going to evolve from it.”

Gaspari, who retired as Batavia athletic director after the 2010-11 school year, deliberated with his family and Bulldogs coach Dennis Piron, a longtime former assistant and family friend.

The men serve as godfathers for one another’s sons, and the deep ties, to be sure, eased the conversation.

“When you’re a guy and you’re 60 years old and you get an opportunity to move to the next level, it’s pretty rare,” Gaspari said.

Actually, Gaspari won’t reach that age milestone until March, but reiterated his wishes to remain close to the community and program for birthdays to come.

If AU is home on the same weekend as Batavia, don’t be surprised to see Gaspari at Bulldog Stadium on a Friday night – just not in that familiar press box perch he enjoyed as offensive coordinator.

Mooseheart improved to 8-3 on the season with a lopsided final score reminiscent of many it recorded during last year’s romp to the IHSA Class 1A state championship as the Ramblers thrashed Paw Paw on Wednesday, 66-30.

Hameed Odunewu, the lone returning starter from last year’s squad that featured three players 6-foot-7 or taller, said the Ramblers are embracing their clean slate.

“It’s not so much following up [from last year], it’s kind of making a name for ourselves,” Odunewu said. “There’s a lot of stuff that people say about last year’s team but none of those guys are here. These are different guys.

“We went through a whole offseason listening to ‘Oh, they’re a different team, they don’t have the same guys.’ We have a chip on our shoulder. We have something to prove. We’re not coming here saying we’re the defending state champions, we’re coming in here saying we’re a new team, and we have something to prove. We have to show everybody that, hey, we’ve still got it.”

went from a perimeter-oriented wing to the team’s tallest player, added to what’s been a splendid senior season, scoring a gamehigh 19 points to go with 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.

“He has been double-double like almost every night for us,” Mooseheart coach Ron Ahrens said.

Asthma ‘action plan’ will help during an emergency Dear Doctor K: My son was recently diagnosed with asthma.

His doctor wants to put together an asthma “action plan.” What is that?

Dear Reader: Asthma is a complicated and serious disease. It can behave differently from hour to hour and from day to day. A person with asthma needs a plan for what to do at each stage of the disease. I’ll describe the elements of the plan in a minute, but first a little background on asthma itself.

Asthma assaults the lung’s airways. The airways are the tubes through which the air you breathe enters and leaves your lungs.

During an asthma attack, the airways get narrower as the muscles surrounding them constrict. The airways also become inflamed, and mucus fills the narrowed passageways. As a result, the flow of air is partially or completely blocked.

A mild asthma attack may cause wheezing, difficulty breathing or a persistent cough.

Symptoms of a more severe attack can include extreme shortness of breath, chest tightness, flared nostrils and pursed lips.

Two types of medications are used to treat asthma: controllers and relievers. Controllers – usually inhaled corticosteroids – are medicines taken regularly to

Relievers, or “rescue” medications, are used just during asthma attacks. They stop or reduce the severity of the attack by relaxing the muscles around the airways to improve airflow. Bronchodilators are often used as rescue medications. (I’ve put an illustration showing how medications treat asthma on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Everyone with asthma should have an asthma action plan. This is a written plan that details what you need to do to control your asthma. It also explains what to do when you experience asthma symptoms or in case of an emergency. You may feel that you already know this information, but when you or a loved one is struggling to breathe, it helps to have a set of written instructions to refer to.

Asthma action plans are often divided into “zones.” You should be able to tell what zone your son

is in from his symptoms. The action plan will tell you what you need to do in each zone. For example: • Green Zone: Doing well.

No coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath; can do all usual activities. Take prescribed long-term controller medicine.

• Yellow Zone: Getting worse.

Coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath; waking at night; can do some, but not all, usual activities. Add quick-relief medicine.

• Red Zone: Medical alert! Very short of breath; quick-relief medicines don’t help; cannot do usual activities; symptoms no better after 24 hours in yellow zone. Get medical help now.

People live with asthma for many years and come to know a lot about it. So a written asthma action plan may seem unnecessary. But in my experience, people who suddenly get sick sometimes forget to take the steps they know they should. A written asthma action plan can be a valuable reminder at a moment of trouble.

Is ‘because I said so’ effective?

Dr. Wallace: You stated that parents should not tell a teen “because I said so” when responding to why a request has been denied. I disagree.

Parents are the boss and in control, and when I tell my two kids “because I said so” that’s all there is to it. If they utter one word after they have been told this, they get put on restriction for a week. Believe me when I tell you that “because I said so” is effective. Just ask my kids. – Mother, Crown Point, Indiana Dear Mother: I believe fully that parents are the boss and need to be in control of their children, but I also know there are many ways to be an effective parent.

While the “because I said so” philosophy apparently works with your children, at least on the immediate level of exerting your will in specific circumstances, the children miss the benefit of your reasoning and, thus, a chance to learn. “Because I said so” seems like a method of last resort, when you’re too tired or impatient to explain yourself further.

Let’s say your daughter asks permission to go to the mall with several friends and is told no and she asks, “Why not?”

You reply, “Because I said so.” Mary asks her mother the same question and is told no.

When she asks why, her mother answers that she doesn’t think the mall is a good place to hang out because it isn’t fair to the shops in the mall to have a bunch of teens milling around with very little money to spend.

In both cases the teen is not permitted to go to the mall, but I feel that Mary can deal with the disappointment better than your daughter.

She realizes her mother respects her enough to

Dear Nameless: Every country in the world is plagued by illegal drug use, but the problem in the United States far outdistances the problem in other countries.

Consider this: The U.S. has about 6 percent of the world’s population, yet we consume an unbelievable 60 percent of all illegal drugs. That is an overpowering and disgusting statistic!

Ralph Richardson, one of the best thespians ever, said: “Actors are the jockeys of literature. Others supply the horses, the plays, and we simply make them run.”

When a cast takes its bow, I always think that the playwright ought to be there, too. But if the actors are bad, the play will not work.

However, the key word in Richardson’s observation for today’s deal is “others.” Bridge is full of “normal” plays, which work most of the time. But when an “other” play is needed, that sorts out the experts from the less capable.

This deal occurred in a private game. North-South were using the weak no-trump, in which an opening bid of one no-trump shows 12-14 points. So South’s rebid indicated a strong no-trump, 15-17 points. This had an effect on the opening lead of West, who preferred the spade four, an unbid suit, to a heart, dummy’s bid suit.

(Note that if South had opened one strong no-trump, North would have used Stayman, South would have denied a four-card major and North would have jumped to three no-trump. Then West surely would have led a heart.)

East took the first trick with his spade king and stuck to the standard script when he returned his second spade. But South won in his hand, played a diamond to dummy’s king, returned to his hand with a spade and played three more rounds of diamonds.

He had nine tricks: three spades, one heart, four diamonds and one club.

Could East have found the fatal heart shift at trick two? It was tough.

Three ways to save money in 2015 NAPSI Good news for some homeowners looking to save money: Utility costs are your biggest housing expense after the mortgage, but there are more ways than ever to save on energy bills. Homeowners who act now can save thousands in the years ahead.

1. Connected home bliss.

Beyond the convenience of controlling your home appliances from a smartphone, the ability to preset your dishwasher or adjust your heating to run during low usage times can save hundreds each year.

Programmable thermostats alone can trim about $180 a year from your bill by reducing your heating or cooling when you need it least, according to Consumer Reports.

Studies also show that the more you know about your energy usage, the more likely you are to conserve.

2. Swap and save. Nearly half of your home’s energy use can come from products you plug into the wall.

But hundreds of products,

As you heat your home this winter, the experts at the York brand of heating and air conditioning recommend the following: 1. Perform regular maintenance. Clean air filters, seal any duct leaks, make sure registers are clear of obstructions and check your insulation. The Environmental Protection Agency reports that improper insulation can reduce system efficiency by as much as 30 percent.

2. Hire a qualified technician to inspect and service your home comfort system. The technician will make sure your system is working properly and at peak efficiency. As a rule of thumb, heat pumps and oil-fired furnaces need annual tune-ups, while gas-fired equipment can be serviced every other year.

3. Consider replacing an older, inefficient furnace or heat pump. A knowledgeable technician will be able to recommend a new, more efficient replacement system, such as Energy Star− qualified equipment that can help save you money on energy bills.

Efficiency is measured as annual fuel utilization efficiency for furnaces and heating seasonal performance factor for heat pumps. The higher the AFUE or HSPF, the more efficient the unit and the less energy it requires to heat your home.

4. Adjust your thermostat. By lowering it just a few degrees in cooler temperatures, you can help your heating system work less to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

5. Think about installing a programmable thermostat. Programming your thermostat to accommodate your family’s time away from home and sleeping schedule will help to ensure that your system is operating only when you need it.
