Aldermen kill effort to combine zoning board of appeals, plan commission

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – An effort to combine Geneva’s zoning board of appeals with its plan commission fell flat this week, as aldermen, voting as the Committee of the Whole, voted 6-3 not to recommend it.

Because the issue of creating a single planning and zoning commission was voted down at committee, it will not come before the council for further review, officials said.

The six who voted against it were 1st Ward Aldermen Charles Brown and Mike Bruno, 2nd Ward Aldermen Don Cummings and Richard Marks, 3rd Ward Alderman Dean Kilburg and 4th Ward Alderman Dorothy Flanagan.

The three who voted for it were 4th Ward Alderman Ron

Singer and 5th Ward Aldermen Craig Maladra and Tom Simonian.

Third Ward Alderman Dawn Vogelsberg was absent.

Mayor Kevin Burns said he was behind the movement to consolidate the two into a single body, to increase the efficiency of their work in that a p e t i t i o n e r Kevin Burns would not have to appear before two bodies.

Staff identified 20 cases that would have moved forward more efficiently if the two boards were one.

“I have always believed it is in our best interest to streamline where we can without jeopardizing the product we provide, and that

is service to the community, the citizen, developers and to create efficiencies for staff and the council,” Burns said.

“I believe this proposal accomplished all those goals.

The council felt otherwise.

That’s the end of it.”

Cummings said it was not easy for him to vote against the proposal.

“I understand the frustration people have to deal with any government office when have to go through several hoops,” Cummings said.

“However, with that, I am reluctant to consolidate power.

I think that bringing 17 or 16 eyes down to far fewer – seven people – leads to a lack of diversity in thinking.”

Cummings said there may be a better way to streamline the process for petitioners, but without lessening diver-

sity.

“It’s not this easy black and white issue,” Cummings said.

Maladra said the trend to combine the zoning board of appeals with a plan commission is readily seen in other communities.

His concern for Geneva, he said, is that the staff is not likely to be increased while it will face double the work as the economy continues to improve.

“They’re going to create packages for double meetings, and double the work ends up being a problem for us going forward,” Maladra said. “We have fixed financial and intellectual resources. At the end of the day, if our staff has to spend time – and I anticipate more and more demand as the economy improves – then we will have issues.”

Geneva library’s hiring decision draws trustee’s ire

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Geneva Library Board agreed to hire a temporary management consultant as a director’s adviser in a split vote in which a trustee blasted the current director Matt Teske and the other trustees for their action.

After an hourlong closed session during a special meeting Tuesday, the library board voted 5-1 with one absent to

hire Marilyn Boria at $60 an hour for 15 hours a week.

Trustee Travis Ketterman was absent and Trustee Susan Shivers voted “no.”

“I am extremely disappointed in the board’s decision,” Shivers said. “I know it’s going to be painful for some people to hear this, but our director has been on the job six or seven years and either he can get it right by now or he cannot.

And I am really not interested in continuing to pay a direc-

tor’s salary and needing to hire a management consultant to evaluate the operations and efficiencies of the library when I’m already well aware of the operations and efficiencies of the library.”

Shivers’ comments drew criticism from trustee Bob Shiffler.

“I think that comment was totally inappropriate,” Shiffler said.

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The single most consistent complaint Chief Judge Judith Brawka has gotten about the Kane County Judicial Center is its temperature.

The too-hot or too-cold temperatures – rooms can range from the 50s to the 90s – have been raised in union negotiations and on juror surveys, Brawka said. She noted someone even blamed his guilty conviction on a cold jurors room.

“It’s not someone saying, ‘I’m chilly,’ ” Brawka told

the Kane County Board on Tuesday morning.

Because the HVAC system is built into the facility in concrete, it is beyond general repair, Brawka said.

Replacing the temperature gauge or thermostat does not solve the problem, she Chris Lauzen said.

“It’s an unbelievably complicated system,” Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said.

He said estimates to fix the problem have ranged

from $500,000 to $1 million.

But before the county hires a company to overhaul the HVAC system, it wants an independent third party to conduct an assessment.

In an unanimous vote, the board Tuesday authorized a $39,865 contract with Hill Mechanical Services to perform a study that will help diagnose the HVAC problems at the judicial center, which is at 37W777 Route 38 in St. Charles Township.

“This is the only way to handle this type of situation,” said board member Ron Ford, D-Aurora.

asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A signage project for the Kane County Government Center that has been in the works for more than a year must wait some more for Kane County Board approval.

The board Tuesday was poised to approve the $47,399 project, which calls for updated signs on the Geneva campus, at 719 S. Batavia Ave., to make the property easier to navigate.

But plans to install a $13,000 monument sign visible to northbound traffic along South Batavia Avenue prompted board member Becky Gillam, R-West Dundee, to pull the item off the consent agenda.

According to county documents, the masonry monument sign would be nearly 5 feet tall and 8 feet wide with limestone details. With a monument sign

already at the government center’s entrance, Gillam questioned the need for a second one and proposed a black sign with white lettering instead.

Board member Mike Donahue, R-Geneva, said the proposed monument sign is more consistent with Geneva’s requirements regarding signs.

Gillam, however, received enough support from the board to remove the monument sign from the original motion to authorize a contract with ParvinClauss of Carol Stream. Because of the change, the item was sent back to the committee.

Board Chairman Chris Lauzen stressed that the signage project had been in the works for more than a year. A better time to raise such concerns would have been any time before the board meeting, he said.

A new year always brings resolutions, the most common of which is to lose weight and/or to become more fit.

This is a great goal for anyone any time of year, but where do people start? Once they get started, how do they stick with it?

A great way to build a foundation for lifelong fitness is to employ the expertise of a personal trainer. Through teaching proper techniques, monitoring activity movements and providing diverse routines, the personal trainer is a valuable asset to the beginner or intermediate client.

Conley Outreach sets kettle collection record The record-breaking year followed a season that netted about $4,000, Werdin Alfrey said.

She credited the successful year to having more volunteers – including church groups, schoolchildren, families and civic organizations – and more shifts worked.

“We were bound to bring in some more,” she said.

More surprising was the number of checks the organization received in the mail, Werdin Alfrey said. Usually, she said, those donations have amounted to a couple of hundred of dollars, but this year they surpassed $1,000.

The money will help people pay for “necessity of life” items, such as rent and utility bills, she said, noting the

“Kaneland’s decision not to continue with the consortium may impact the cost” for the remaining districts, he wrote. “The member districts will have to process through the impact of this on the consortium’s strategic plan.”

In the first phase of the project, in which the task was to study the issue and develop goals, the districts’ costs were proportional to their enrollments, and Kaneland, as the smallest district, paid the least. Kaneland Superintendent Jeff Schuler indicated that the second phase would not be priced in the same way.

“Everybody’s share in phase two is a lot closer in amount,” he said. Schuler said the district did not have an indication about pricing for the second phase until last month.

ELBURN – Carrie E. Petrie, 87, of Elburn, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at Oak Crest Retirement Center, DeKalb. She took her last breath as her daughter held her hand to complete her bridge between Earth and the heavenly gates.

Carrie was born April 22, 1926, on the family farm, in Blackberry Township, the daughter of Cecil L. and Helen G. (McNair) Gum. She graduated from Elburn High School with the Class of 1944.

Carrie was united in marriage

to Grover Petrie on Nov. 28, 1946, at the Elburn Congregational Church. Together, they were blessed with three children: Kenton, Neal and Cara.

Carrie worked during the early years at Robert’s Drive-In in Geneva, the Wasco Inn in Wasco, the Elburn Kountry Kettle and catered countless parties and dinners.

She was a charter member of the Daniel Simpson American Legion Auxiliary Unit 630, where she was past unit president and secretary for countless years. Carrie was chairman to many committees; her footprints leave a path of service that will be hard to follow. She was past president of the Kane County Council and past 11th District president.

She was a member of the Kane County Salon 63 of the 8/40 of which she was a Past La Petit Chapeau. Carrie was a member of the Quivera Club, the Elburn Community Congregational Church and the Union Congregational Church of Hackensack, Minn.

She is survived by her devoted daughter, Cara (Stephen) Bartel of DeKalb and her beloved granddaughter, Abigail; two sisters, Cecelia (Norbert) Lund of Sycamore and Elaine Johansen of DeKalb; one brother-in-law, Donald Westlake of Wheaton; many nieces and nephews and a lifetime of friends both in Illinois and Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Grover (2005); two sons, Kenton in 1974 and Neal in 2012; her sister, Helen Westlake; and one brother-in-law, John Johansen.

A celebration of her life will be Saturday, Feb. 22, at Elburn American Legion Post 630, 112 N. Main St., Elburn, starting at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to benefit Carrie’s favorite charities. SUGAR GROVE – The Kaneland School District 302 Board on Monday night voted against remaining in an online and blended learning consortium of school districts as the group moves into the second phase of its project.

Board members heard from Erika Schlichter, the district’s director of educational services for sixth through 12th grade.

Schlichter, Kaneland’s representative in the consortium, reported that the cost for the second phase would be significantly higher than what previously was expected – $96,450.

The board voted against moving to the next phase, by a 5-2 vote. Board members Gale Pavlak and Peter Lopatin voted to continue in the consortium.

Kaneland was to be part of the consortium, which also includes the Batavia, Wheaton-Warrenville, Naperville and Indian Prairie school districts.

The plan calls for the districts to work together to offer online learning opportunities, which Kaneland leaders touted as an opportunity to expand district curriculum.

Brad Newkirk, chief academic officer for Batavia School District 101, said in an email that Batavia’s school

Board member Teresa Witt said it was “unfortunate” that she could not support moving into the second phase. She pointed to cuts the district already has made, as well as ongoing negotiations with the teacher’s union. She told administrators that “I have faith in you guys to seek out opportunities.”

“We have a lot of balls in the air, and we don’t know where they are going to land,” Witt said. “We’ve eliminated things that didn’t come back. … It’s with regret that I don’t feel I can support it.”

Lopatin said he understood it would be difficult to spend money “on something we’re not sure about.” But he called on administrators to speak more on the vision for the plan, with enthusiasm.

“I would like a much more impassioned defense to the board,” he said.

Schuler said the opportunity would include expanding curriculum offerings beyond what could be offered now.

He said it would allow the districts to personalize the learning experience for students.

And he said it would provide “a new path” for learning, providing a chance for increased collaboration with students outside of the district.

PARKED ON SUNDAYS Car dealers fighting against Oberweis’ push to allow sales on Sundays

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, has submitted a proposal to allow car dealers to stay open for business on Sundays

Barca, who works as the executive manager at Al Piemonte dealerships, including St. Charles Chrysler Dodge Jeep, said Sundays were busy days.

But she said dealerships are better off being closed Sundays, as they are in Illinois, thanks to a law that went into effect in 1983. She said there was tremendous turnover and burnout in the business, and that the industry wouldn’t benefit if dealerships were able to be open Sundays, and she said that’s why the law was passed in the first place.

“It’s just not a good idea,” she said. “It really isn’t. It would be so hard for everybody involved.”

State Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove, has pushed to allow dealerships to open Sundays. He said making such a law is “just wrong policy, and I will fight that type of government abuse whenever I see it.” He said that since 32 states allow car dealerships to be open on Sunday, there should be no problem with having them open in Illinois.

He said the law is in place because “the dealers got together and used the government to prevent anyone from being open on Sunday.”

“These are self-interests,” Oberweis said. “They believe they will save money and save effort from not being open, and that’s not the way it works in a free market.”

According to www.cyberdriveillinois.com, violating the law is a misdemeanor, and it could cost offenders $1,500.

Surrounding states that don’t allow dealerships to open on Sundays include Wisconsin, Missouri and Indiana.

Those in the business say there are good reasons not to be open. They point to long hours for some who already work more than 10 hours a

day, some for six days a week.

They say that since banks aren’t open Sundays, arranging financing could be difficult.

“Buying a car back then wasn’t as complicated as it is now,” Barca said. “You maybe needed three or four documents to sign. … Now, it’s just like buying a house.”

Ryan Easter, general manager at Bob Jass Chevrloet in Elburn, said if there were complications with loans or banks that could not be resolved, customers could get upset. He said “we would be doing an injustice” in that

situation, adding that many customers arrive with the thought that they are going to go home in a new car.

Some say if the law were not there, there would be dealerships that choose to open on Sundays. That, they said, would force others to open, for fear of losing business.

Dave Sloan, president of the Chicago Automobile Trade Association, said it’s a “minor inconvenience” that dealerships aren’t open on Sunday. Easter said Sunday “is a time for family, a time of worship, a time [employees]

can do things in the community.”

Sloan said customers enjoy shopping at dealerships when there are no salesmen allowed, so they can look around with less pressure.

open, and that others would follow. But she doesn’t think it’s right. She said there would have to be finance staffers, management, porters and office staff, “it’s not just salespeople who would be here.”

“There would be no question, we would be open,” she said, but she added that she had another suggestion.

CARPENTERSVILLE – A part-time firefighter charged with punching a woman in the face multiple times has been on unpaid leave at both departments he works for since the altercation.

Jason S. Elders, 39, who w a s a r r e s t e d Jason S. a b o u t 1 2 : 3 0 Elders a.m. Dec. 22 in St. Charles Township, has been on unpaid leave from the West Dundee Fire Department and Carpentersville Fire Department since Dec. 24 and Dec. 26, respectively.

Elders was making $15.81 an hour at Carpentersville and $13.26 an hour in West

Dundee.

He faces misdemeanor battery charges in Kane County stemming from the physical altercation with the unnamed woman.

Witnesses told police Elders got on top of the 37-yearold woman and punched her in the face several times, Kane County Sheriff’s Lt. Pat Gengler said.

According to the police report, family and friends pulled Elders off the woman.

The incident is alleged to have occurred in the driveway of a home near where Elders had been attending a Christmas party earlier that night.

The woman was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva for injuries that were not life-threatening.

He will next appear in court Jan. 22 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

A plan for growth – renewing ‘fast-track’ procedures THE WASHINGTON POST The devastating impact of the Great Recession lingers on, as the unexpectedly poor Labor Department report on December job growth showed. The unemployment rate shrank three-tenths of a percent, to 6.7 percent, but mostly because 347,000 working-age people left the labor force altogether, while a mere 74,000 got hired. It doesn’t help matters that a disproportionate number of the jobless are long-term unemployed.

Fortunately, though, a bipartisan group in Congress is pressing ahead with at least one measure that could help the U.S. economy grow and create employment – leg-

islation to strengthen President Barack Obama’s hand in negotiations for expanded free trade with Europe and the Pacific Rim. We refer to a proposal unveiled Thursday by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., and Sens. Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, the chairman and ranking member of the Finance Committee, respectively. It would renew the “fast-track” procedures under which the House and Senate agree to vote on freetrade agreements without amendments or filibusters.

Those procedures were last approved in 2002 and lapsed in 2007. By expediting congressional consideration,

they streamlined past trade negotiations under both Republican and Democratic presidents, because U.S. trading partners knew that Congress couldn’t undo any deal they might strike with the executive branch.

In return for ceding some legislative prerogatives, Congress appropriately demands a say in setting negotiating objectives, as well as a measure of enhanced oversight of the talks as they proceed.

Congressional skepticism toward free trade, always strong among Rust Belt Democrats, has arguably grown in the 12 years since the last fast-track bill passed, due to the recession – and to the rise of the tea party, with its anxiety about ceding U.S.

Accordingly, the newly proposed bill adds such concerns as addressing trading partners’ currency manipulation to the formal list of U.S. negotiating objectives, and it creates House and Senate advisory groups to monitor and consult on the talks regularly. It also incorporates the same approach to meeting core labor and environmental standards that satisfied Congress when it was considering recent agreements with countries such as Peru and Colombia.

Yet the proposal does all of this without placing unduly binding limits on U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman’s latitude to cut the two deals he is pursuing

separately with the European Union and 11 Asia-Pacific countries, including Japan.

Of course, opponents of the bill see this flexibility as a bug, not a feature; the AFLCIO has denounced it, and Rep. Sander Levin, D-Mich., said he may introduce a rival bill. The Obama administration sounded a more favorable note; it will probably have to depend on mostly Republican votes to pass the legislation.

In return, the GOP is demanding that the president himself advocate fast track aggressively. It’s not an unreasonable request.

Obama could start by giving the issue a prominent mention in his State of the Union address.

State’s Attorney: Felonies down, abuse numbers up

By CHARLES MENCHACA editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Kane County saw a decrease in felonies in 2013, but also an uptick in abuse and neglect petitions, Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said Tuesday.

Felony, misdemeanor and DUI filings in the county are lower for 2013 compared to 2012, according to initial data from the State’s Attorney’s Office. There has been an increase over the same period in abuse and neglect petitions. McMahon previewed the findings of the State’s Attorney’s Office annual report during his monthly media meeting.

McMahon said there have been more referrals to the Kane County Child Advocacy Center in 2013 compared to 2012.

The office prosecutes allegations of sexual abuse involving those under age 16, abuse by a family member or anyone who is more than five

years older than the accuser.

McMahon did not discuss the specific numbers for 2013 because he had only preliminary data at this time. His office plans to release the 2013 year-end report with the final numbers by early next month.

In 2012, the State’s Attorney’s Office authorized 2,602 felony cases. The office also filed 1,373 misdemeanor DUI cases, according to its 2012 annual report. The Child Advocacy Center in 2012 conducted 285 investigations and closed 271 investigations, including those initiated in prior years, the report said.

McMahon also discussed laws that would have some impact on the State’s Attorney’s Office, including the introduction of medicinal marijuana in the state. The law will change DUI prosecutions if the offender charged has a medical marijuana registration card that allows them to consume marijuana, McMahon said.

Before this year, prosecu-

tors had to prove only that an offender had any amount of cannabis in his or her system beyond a reasonable doubt for a driving under the influence of drugs charge. If the offender is in possession of a valid medical marijuana card, that state has to prove actual impairment, McMahon said.

“Just because someone has a registration card doesn’t mean they can drive under the influence of cannabis,” McMahon said at the meeting. “It’s still illegal for them to drive if they’re impaired by the presence of cannabis in their system.”

If the offender doesn’t have a medical marijuana card, then the existing law applies, McMahon said.

As for concealed carry, the State’s Attorney’s Office received access this week to completed applications. The office will work with Illinois State Police to check local applicants and pass along any objections when they are identified, McMahon said.

Papa G’s site stirs buyer, investor interest

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ELBURN – Whenever real estate broker Brett Rodgers shows the now-shuttered Papa G’s at 250 S. Main St., Elburn, he said four or five more people will just pull into the parking lot and ask to see it, too.

“We are proactively trying to find the right fit,” said Rodgers, a broker with Marcus and Millichap’s, a national commercial real estate and investment firm. “Its closure left a hole. It was a destination restaurant for the area.

We would like to see a refreshed restaurant concept go

in there with the same type of service.”

Papa G’s is 7,464 square feet on 1.41 acres and is being offered for sale at $990,000.

The one-story building was built in 1987 and has 100 parking spaces, according to the company’s information Rodgers said Papa G’s shut down in September because of too much debt coupled with a turndown in the market.

“The location supports a strong business there – 20,000 cars go by every day. It was just more of a financing issue than the core business,” Rodgers said. “They were running a good amount of sales,

even when they closed. The previous debt on it was just too much to sustain the business.”

According to Kane County property records, Papa G’s previous owner defaulted on a loan of nearly $2.52 million. Amresco Commercial Finance of Boise, Idaho, acquired the note and foreclosed on the property, records show.

Rodgers said he represents Amresco in trying to sell the property.

“He was up against a soft market with a different set of financing,” Rodgers said of the previous owner. “Now, it’s a much lower overhead

Rodgers said he also has a personal connection to Papa G’s.

“I grew up in St. Charles, graduated in 1989, so I have a vested interest in seeing a good fit there,” Rodgers said.

The Papa G’s property was previously known as Hanson’s Back 80 Restaurant, Rodgers said, and it was purchased and converted to Papa G’s in the early 1990s.

Rodgers said he has met with a half-dozen serious would-be buyers who have the ability to buy the proper-

ty, as well as at least two calls a day of possible new owners or investors who are interested.

“It was fully renovated and ran as a successful operation for nearly 20 years,” Rodgers said. “Our hope is that a new owner for the property can come in with a fresh business or restaurant concept that will benefit from a lower overhead level and in an improving economy to run a successful business from the site.”

T. CHARLES – A young Batavia girls basketball fan meekly voiced a polite request for unwitting senior guard Liza Fruendt midway through Tuesday’s fourth quarter.

“Could you please try to dunk it next time, Liza?” the little boy said.

Fruendt had just streaked from one end of the floor to the other with a breakaway layup, scoring her 29th and 30th points of the night and the 1,602nd and 1,603rd of her career – extending a program record she set against St. Charles East.

Fruendt joked about working the dunk into her repertoire shortly after a 63-41 Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory against the Saints. The truth is, she has ascended past Katie Issel to become the program’s alltime leading scorer in large part because of what preceded the layup, her final action of the night.

“I’m being able to pick off passes more, and that leads to transition, which leads to more buckets. It just makes the flow of the game really easy,” Fruendt said. “Sometimes, when scoring 30, I’m like, ‘How did I do that?’ you know. You don’t really remember, because it’s just transition. Getting up and down. Those easy buckets.”

Batavia (13-5, 5-0 UEC River) remained atop the conference standings behind harrassing pressure defense against East (9-10, 3-3), which was without senior point guard Amanda Hilton (knee) for the second straight game.

Saints coach Lori Drumtra said the team expects to learn of Hilton’s long-term prognosis today.

“If she comes back, of course, that’s wonderful news.

If she has to sit out a little bit longer, we kind of have to figure it out,” Drumtra said.

The Bulldogs hope to maintain their intensity when they visit Geneva on Friday.

Batavia earned its first victory against the Vikings in nearly six seasons in early December.

“This week, we have to have two good practices going into that game,” Batavia senior forward Erin Bayram said. “I think our main thing is just going to be focus and effort. If we have those two things, I don’t think that they can stop us.”

Fruendt wasted little time

in what proved her final pursuit of Issel (1,593 career points), letting fly from 3-point range moments after Bayram – her best friend who said Fruendt “deserves this more than anyone” – corralled the opening tip.

Fruendt clapped her hands for the ball on several early possessions en route to a 1 for 4 start from the field, but coach Kevin Jensen worked to keep things light. Before Fruendt even broke into the scoring column, sophomore Bethany Orman banked in a 3 from the right wing 1:23 into the game.

“You didn’t call that!” Jensen yelled from the bench.

By the time she got going, you could sense Fruendt almost willing a few of her shots in the basket.

There she was, drilling a 3 from the top of the key moments after East drew to within five points midway through the second quarter. About two minutes later, Fruendt scored five points in a short span, hitting a 3 before stealing the ball from Claussner and racing to the other end of the floor for a layup.

Fruendt matched Issel with 20 points at halftime, then secured the record for herself with a left-handed layup with 2:48 to play in the third quarter. Jensen immediately called timeout.

“You want to enjoy the moment, but you also want it to be kind of over,” Fruendt said.

“So I could just enjoy the rest of the game. I don’t have to think about it. But it’s a cool thing, you know. It doesn’t happen that often.”

Batavia’s deep attack, including Bayram (14 points) and sophomore forward Hannah Frazier (12), kept the Saints honest against Fruendt defensively.

East countered with 11 points from Kyra Washington and eight apiece from Chloe John, MacKenzie Meadows and Hannah Nowling.

Drumtra lamented the Saints’ overall offensive struggles, which included a 3 for 9 effort from in the field in the third quarter. In addition to Fruendt, those added up as Batavia pulled away.

The Cadets went scoreless for the first five minutes and the only five points they scored in the first quarter came from senior guard Michael Murphy off the bench.

“We were not ready to play,” Marmion coach Ryan Paradise said. “We had unforced turnovers. I think we had 13 at halftime. … We were forcing things that weren’t there on the offensive end.

Guys were just kind of tripping over their own feet. I don’t know what it was, but we certainly didn’t deserve to win tonight.”

The Cadets trailed 23-11 at the half, but started to make a run late in the third quarter behind the play of junior guard Jordan Glasgow. He scored on a baseline drive with 29 seconds left in the period to pull Marmion within 10. He hit a pair of free throws seven seconds later to cut the deficit to single digits, then came up with a steal and fed the ball to Maryanski, who passed it to Jacob Esp at the free-throw line for a shot at the buzzer that hung on the

front of the rim for a second before falling in.

Johnson protested the official’s decision to count the basket and was given a technical foul for being out of the coaching box. Maryanski made both of the ensuing foul shots and suddenly the Kaneland lead was just 38-34 heading into the fourth quarter.

Glasgow, who scored all 14 of his points in the second half, hit a 3-pointer from the left wing at the start of the final period to make it a onepoint game.

“We knew they were going to make a charge,” Carlson said. “Marmion’s a great team. We knew that coming in. We just tried to stay composed with John, one of our main ballhandlers, out. Drew was doing a great job controlling the pressure and we just held on and got the win.”

Danny Bicknell pulled down 10 rebounds for Marmion to help the Cadets win the battle on the boards, 24-22.

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Although the pace of Tuesday’s night game was less than exciting, the St. Charles North boys basketball team came out on top of the low scoring contest with Bartlett, 44-36.

The teams combined for only 17 baskets in the first half of the Upstate Eight Conference crossover game.

“We’re not going to make excuses about a Tuesday night in finals week. We played the game at Bartlett’s pace,” North coach Tom Poulin said.

“I thought they took away certain parts of our transition game and we didn’t do a real good job of identifying what they were giving us. We were able to pull out a W so we’ll

take and run with it.”

The North Stars (10-5) led 12-7 after the first quarter and limited the Hawks to only two baskets in the period.

Bartlett (10-7) made efficient use of its shots in the second quarter. The Hawks sank six baskets in the second eight minutes with five of them beyond the 3-point arc giving them a slim 24-23 lead at half time.

Bartlett’s Ryan DiCanio made five of his team’s second quarter baskets, draining four treys in row. His last 3-pointer, just before the buzzer, gave Bartlett the lead. The junior guard led all scorers with 16 points.

North increased the tempo of the game in the third quarter and retook the lead. Two free throws by John Davern

with 1:50 left in the quarter put the North Stars ahead, 3028. The North Stars defense again limited the Hawks to two baskets.

“I think it was a matter that they shot really well in the first half and the second half they didn’t hit their shots,” North Stars guard Jake Ludwig said.

The junior was North’s top scorer with 15 points.

“We pushed the ball a little bit better towards the end of the third,” Poulin said. “And we trapped a little bit out of the zone which we had success with.”

Bartlett pulled with three points halfway through the fourth quarter on a basket by Justin Busch, 38-35.

On North’s next possession, a put back basket by

reserve Garrett Johnson, returned the lead to five points.

Johnson scored eight points and pulled down eight rebounds.

“Garrett plays hard and does a real good job of understanding his role and doing what we need him to do for us to be successful,” Poulin said.

“We had a rhythm there

in the second quarter and knocked down some shots,” Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith said. “In the second half we missed good threes. We had good looks, but we just didn’t knock them down.”

Jack Callaghan scored nine points for North. Robbie Jimenez tallied eight points for Bartlett.

AURORA – The Kaneland boys basketball team somehow survived losing a 15-point lead, losing its leading scorer to five fouls, and missing a shot on its final possession of the game to escape Marmion’s Alumni Hall with a 4947 nonconference victory Tuesday night.

The Knights (9-5) led, 3722, with two minutes left in the third quarter, but the Cadets (7-10) went on a 15-1 run over the next three minutes to pull within one. Marmion finally tied the game at 47 with 48 seconds left on a 3-pointer from the top of the key by Michael Sheehan.

Kaneland took a timeout to draw up a play for the last shot and point guard Drew David found 6-foot-3 senior Tyler Carlson on a backdoor cut. Carlson missed the shot, but was able to grab the re-

bound on the other side of the rim.

“Coach [Brian] Johnson had a great play call there,” Carlson said. “Drew made a great pass. I missed the first one but I jumped back and got the second one.”

The “second one” came from the free-throw line as Carlson was fouled on the rebound. He hit a pair of free throws with 1.3 seconds left to give Kaneland the win.

“Ty’s been clutch all year long,” Johnson said. “It really started at [the] Plano [Christmas Classic] when he’s been feeling it and it’s kind of rolled all the way through. He made some big free throws and was playing a position and a play we usually run for John [Pruett] and he was able to execute on that.”

NOTEWORTHY After bumps, Knights eye NI Big 12 East run If there’s good news to accompany Kaneland’s 44-41 loss Monday night at Plano, it’s that the Knights held a fourth-quarter lead against a team that is hosting a Class 3A regional next month.

Take away an 0 for 18 run from the field down the stretch, and Kaneland likely would have defeated Plano.

Instead, the Knights lost, 44-41, and again were left scratching their heads about another prolonged cold spell.

On a balanced team where coach Ernie Colombe contends, “I would say we don’t have a superstar,” lapses must be few and far between. While Brittany Kemp (11 points), Caroline Heimerdinger (nine) and Morgan Weber (seven) offered options against Plano, the Knights still faded down the stretch.

Colombe largely has been encouraged with the team’s resilience despite a 9-10 start. Several players assumed bigger roles in the rotation after projected sparkplug Vanessa Gould, a sophomore forward, suffered an early knee injury. Gould since has been lost for the season after microfracture surgery last month.

“She’s a big loss for us, but I think the kids have responded by working hard and trying to fill her role,” Colombe said. “We knew it wasn’t going to happen overnight, but we think we’re getting better.”

outings included a 21 for 40 effort in a home win against Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Morris and going 12 for 24 against Plano.

Kaneland remains optimistic about the conference race with seven NI Big 12 East games remaining, beginning with Friday’s visit to DeKalb.

“We hope if we can keep improving, we’ll be right in the thick of things again,” Colombe said. “There is no easy night in conference. I think it’s still up for grabs right now.”

With that stretch in mind, Geneva coach Sarah Meadows tabled any “looking ahead” talk until the Vikings handled visiting St. Charles North this past weekend.

“They’ll have plenty of stuff on their lockers and they’ll hear plenty of stuff (this) week,” Meadows said.

Geneva was without dynamic freshman center Grace Loberg in the first Batavia game, as she had yet to be promoted from the lower levels. Loberg quickly emerged into a scoring threat, and only has refined her roles on offense and at the top of

Geneva’s 1-2-1-1 diamond press since then.

“We’ve had I don’t know how many practices, but I’ve been able to learn the plays more,” Loberg said. “I knew the first time I didn’t know all of them, so I’m learning more now, and they’re really helping me fit in.”

The Bulldogs followed the Vikings a handful of times down the stretch of last month’s Montini Christmas Tournament, giving them the snippet of a scouting report from which to work. It’ll be fun to see

how much Friday’s game is played out in the post.

This could be the first of many encounters between Loberg and Batavia sophomore Hannah Frazier, who had some big moments in this rivalry a season ago.

The 6-foot Shead played basketball for the Saints as an underclassman before stepping aside to escalate her track training. Shead said she misses basketball “a little bit,” but stands by her decision, noting that basketball season overlaps with the start of indoor track.

In October, Shead took an official visit to Notre Dame.

She enjoyed the trip but needed time before making what she called “a very tough decision” because of her affection for some of the other schools recruiting her.

“It’s a very beautiful campus,” Shead said. “I really liked the team. They were all very nice and friendly, and the coach was great. It seems like he had very good vision for the future and for me.”

Light at end of tunnel: St. Charles East boys basketball standout Dom Adduci would be looking forward to Saturday’s rivalry matchup with St. Charles North no matter what, but the circumstances this week amplify his anticipation.

In the midst of finals week – and Adduci is a conscientious student, ranking in the top 10 percent of East’s senior class – the prospect of lacing ’em up against North is helping Adduci stave off the final-week blues.

“It’s a little stressful but it’s not too bad,” Adduci said.

“The big game on Saturday is definitely something to help us push through finals and definitely something to look forward to after that.”

Jordan Shead finalized a glamorous decision in decidedly unglamorous fashion – with an email.

Last week, the St. Charles East senior verbally committed to the Notre Dame women’s track and field program by sharing her intentions via an email correspondence with Fighting Irish sprints coach Alan Turner.

Businesslike enough, but then again, Shead knows a no-nonsense college career awaits her at a school like Notre Dame, especially with Jordan Shead a formidable major such as biology in mind.

“It’s going to be a pretty big challenge, I’ve heard, from when I visited the girls on the team majoring in that,” Shead said. “They say it’s pretty hard, but I really enjoy it, so I don’t think it’ll be that bad.”

Shead finished fourth in the 400-meter run at the IHSA Class 3A Girls Track and Field State Meet as a junior, clocking in at 55.56 seconds.

She’s hoping to better that time and place this season, which begins with the start of indoor workouts next week.

Shead said Notre Dame is primarily interested in her for the 400 but the 200 and 800 are also considerations.

“Over the summer I did club track [with the Aurora Flyers] and I didn’t PR over the summer, but I really worked on getting strong and building a good base,” Shead said. “I’ve just been working hard in the offseason in building up, so it’s looking pretty good.”

With longtime Saints stalwart Britney Williams graduated, Shead’s leadership on East’s powerhouse 4x400 relay and throughout the team will be all the more crucial.

Shead said she chose Notre Dame over Dayton, Loyola and Wisconsin. Her father, Corey, is a big Notre Dame football fan, and has taken Shead to Irish games in the past.

Adduci has had plenty of big games in his Saints career, but this was like no other. The Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about his monster game and Saturday’s upcoming showdown with St. Charles North. The following is an edited transcript: Was Friday the hottest you’ve ever been?

Yeah, you know that first half was definitely something. It’s the first time it’s ever happened my entire life. I was feeling hot in warmups and I’ve been shooting in the gym a lot to try and get my 3-point shot where I want it to be. When I was

hitting those shots, the basket just felt like an ocean. … It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me, definitely. To score that many points, it was just exhilarating.

Were you aware you had the 32 points at halftime? … I tend not to look at the scoreboard and not look at our [individual] points. I’m focused on the score for our team and how the team is doing so I wasn’t really aware. … But when I looked at half, I was like [‘Oh my gosh.]. … I’ve scored a lot of points in the past, but nothing to that caliber.

For the rematch with North, what do you guys have to do better this time than the last time?

We definitely have to handle their zone a little better on

offense but our main factor is definitely limiting Alec Goetz and Jake Ludwig, their great guards and some of the best guards in the area. Our big battle is going to be the battle on the glass. We really need to handle defensive rebounding as well as offensive rebounds. If we do that, I really feel like we can beat them.

If you had to pick one teammate to help you with some tricky homework, who would it be and why?

Definitely David Mason because he’s just an overall smart kid. We’re both in a bunch of the same classes but David is really smart with everything. He’s the go-to guy on the team. If we need help we always ask Dave because Dave always seems to have the right answers.

The smart and unconventional lawyer who runs his Los Angeles practice from the back seat of a Lincoln Town Car takes on a vulnerable client accused of murdering a prostitute in “The Gods of Guilt,” a new and enjoyable “Lincoln Lawyer” legal thriller by the great Michael Connelly.

As Connelly shows in “The Gods of Guilt,” the cards are stacked against the defense attorney in many ways. There’s an innate assumption of guilt, for starters. Then there are the formidable and hostile foes – police, prosecutors and the aggrieved. You have to have a thick skin and a contrary nature to build a defense and stay positive. Mickey Haller and his cadre of innovative investigators are the perfect foil to a punishing criminal justice system.

The accused is Andre La Cosse, said to be a “digital pimp.” He sets up prostitutes with various websites that appeal to a range of tastes in order to attract greater numbers of clients. From the prostitutes he collects a percentage of each client’s fee.

He’s enterprising, homosexual, slight of stature and, Haller realizes almost immediately, innocent of the charge of murdering his client Gloria Dayton.

One of her clients has a commercial property with large, unoccupied offices. Haller and his crew use an empty space in the mornings for meetings. They must adjourn quickly, however, before the ear-splitting rock bands start practicing. As for the Lincoln Town Car with the printer and fax machine on a shelf in the front seat, it is so renowned that a movie gets made about Haller. This real-life movie, which stars Matthew McConaughey, is referenced a few times in the book to humorous effect.

Mostly, though, “The Gods

of Guilt” is a deadly serious story of investigation and courtroom cunning. The gods referenced in the title are the 12 jurors who ultimately pronounce judgment.

La Cosse, Haller’s client, is a poor candidate for jail and his health declines precipitously as his incarceration and the trial proceeds.

By the time the trial nears completion, he is fighting for his life. Despite his vilified profession, he’s a sympathetic, caring character and we want him found innocent and quickly. The situation is dire.

It becomes clear that there are people, possibly aligned with

law enforcement, that have a stake in La Cosse’s guilt. Witnesses are turned and Haller’s own staff become targets of a deadly hunt.

Haller’s tactic is to prove reasonable doubt. There are other people who might have wanted Dayton dead. She was used as an informer against a merciless drug cartel. Haller has to get the support of a powerful but incarcerated cartel leader who was framed, possibly by the same suspects who may have killed Dayton. The case is sufficiently complicated to show Haller’s prowess at deduction – and Connelly’s deft plotting.

Haller can be tough, but he’s got a big, messy soft spot. He fights for his innocent client, forsaking sleep and even his usual nightcaps. Years earlier, he gave the murder victim, Dayton, $25,000 to start a new life in Hawaii. She may have been reaching out to him with postcards when she was murdered. And he’s wracked by sadness by the estrangement of his teenage daughter. She is disgusted by the way he used technicalities to free a client who then caused the death of a friend of hers. This incident caused her much personal grief as well as humiliation at school.

Michael Connelly is also author of the Harry Bosch detective series, also set in Los Angeles. This is Connelly’s 26th book and, to the credit of this hard-working and talented author, it holds up with the best of them.

Dad wants to learn how to control emotions Washing one’s hands Dear Abby: I’m a dad in my 30s and I have a problem. I have been battling anger issues since I was a kid. I have been finding myself getting more and more worked up with my kids. When they misbehave, I lose it and yell at them. It is the way I was raised; however, I feel even worse afterward.

I really want to break this habit. I don’t want the only memories my children have of me to be images of my red face and buggedout eyes hollering at them. Do you have any guidelines I can follow to get a better handle on my anger? – Loud Dad In West Virginia Dear Loud Dad: Yes, I do. And I’m glad you asked me because it’s important that you find other ways of relieving your frustration than taking it out on your children. It is not only counterproductive, it is extremely destructive.

When a bigger person yells at a smaller person, the message is often lost because the smaller person (in your case, your children) simply shuts down out of fear that physical violence might follow.

Sometimes when people are angry or frustrated about other things, they can lose control of their temper. In situations like these, it is important to evaluate

the source of what might really be irritating you before misdirecting your anger at someone who is blameless.

There are healthy ways of dealing with anger and frustration.

Developing the control to express emotions verbally without being abusive or calling names is one of them. Another is to say a prayer (“Please Lord, don’t let me lose my temper!”) before opening your mouth. Leaving the room or going for a walk can be helpful.

Unhealthy ways that should be avoided include getting into your car when you are angry, or using alcohol or drugs to calm you.

My booklet offers many other suggestions for dealing with anger and frustration, and I hope it will be helpful to you. However, if it isn’t, then you should discuss your problem with a mental health professional. It’s important to get a handle on your feelings so your children won’t grow up thinking that verbal abuse is normal.

Sexually active women must find right birth control pill Dear Doctor K: I’ve recently become sexually active and I’m planning to go on the pill. But there are so many different types of birth control pills. Which one is right for me?

Dear Reader: I don’t know enough about you to give an answer that’s right for you. From my general remarks about these pills, I’m hopeful you can pinpoint the ones that seem right for you – and discuss them with your doctor.

Birth control pills can be divided into two basic categories: combined pills and minipills.

Most birth control pills are combined pills. They contain a combination of two types of female sex hormones: the hormone estrogen and a progestogen (a group of hormones that includes progesterone). Minipills contain a progestogen, but no estrogen.

The estrogen in combined birth control pills prevents ovulation, the release of a mature egg from a woman’s ovary. Combined birth control pills also thicken cervical secretions, creating a barrier that makes it difficult for sperm to get into the uterus. They produce changes in the tubes that carry the egg from the ovaries to the uterus. And they make it hard for a fertilized egg to implant

Combination birth control pills are 98 to 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy. The more estrogen, the better the birth control effect. Unfortunately, the more estrogen, the higher the likelihood of side effects such as high blood pressure or headaches.

Minipills do not prevent ovulation as effectively as combination pills because they don’t contain estrogen. They mainly act by thickening secretions of the cervix and making it hard for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus. They are about 98 percent effective. Minipills need to be taken exactly as directed.

Even missing one pill can greatly reduce their effectiveness.

Combination birth control pills are available in three subtypes: monophasic, biphasic and triphasic. Monophasic pills contain a constant amount of estrogen and progestogen. With biphasic and triphasic pills, the dose varies over the course of the month.

For most women, monophasic birth control pills are a good first option. They work as well as the more expensive and more complicated biphasic and triphasic products.

Minipills are a good option if you have a reason to avoid estrogen. The most common reasons are a tendency to develop blood clots, smoking and current breastfeeding. That’s because estrogen increases the tendency for blood clots. In smokers, even if they’ve never had a problem with blood clots in the past, starting on estrogen increases the risk for clots – and of the heart attacks and strokes caused by them.

Estrogen reduces the amount of breast milk, so estrogen-containing birth control pills normally are not recommended in women who are breast feeding.

It may take some trial and error to find the best birth control pill for you. Try to achieve the right hormonal balance – just enough to prevent pregnancy, but not enough to cause side effects.

I know it’s the flu season now, and since I am very involved with a lot of school and family activities, I really need to stay well. Do you have any information on whether or not anti-bacterial soap is necessary for washing your hands? – Tommy, St. Louis, Mo. Dear Tommy: A doctor in West Virginia also responded to the column on hand washing. He sent me the following excellent advice that will help you stay active and healthy: Dr. Wallace: I’m glad that you inform your readers that the best way to avoid catching a cold or the flu is to wash one’s hands frequently (at least four times daily) especially before eating.

Please allow me to inform your readers of the proper hand-washing technique. Warm water is not required, and any soap will do the job.

Rubbing soapy hands for a minimum of 20 seconds is necessary. It’s the friction of rubbing the hands together that is most important.

Wood County elementary students in our state of West Virginia were encouraged to wash their hands frequently as a project started by St. Joseph’s Hospital in Parkersburg.

During the project, absenteeism fell by 1 percent. This doesn’t seem like much, but 125 more students a day were in the classroom being educated rather than being home and sick in bed!

Health professionals agree that proper hand washing is the best preventive medicine for children, teens and adults. Besides colds and flu, other ailments,

Before you answer that question, what does South’s two-spade rebid show?

It indicates a hand too strong to pass out two hearts, but too weak to jump to four hearts.

North has a useful spade queen, four trumps (a ninecard fit is much better than an eight-carder) and an ace. Yes, he has only seven high-card points and 4-3-3-3 distribution, but since his hand has those three pluses, he should jump to four hearts.

Agreed, on a bad day, declarer will lose three diamonds and one heart, but the odds make this game worth bidding, and it succeeds here.

KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla ELBURN – For years, Carrie Petrie worked to place flags at cemeteries to honor veterans on Memorial Day, a task that would take her hours each year.

Then, at the village’s annual Memorial Day ceremony, she would read the names of the veterans who had died.

She would recite “In Flanders Fields” at the event and played a key role in the ceremony for more than 60 years.

Petrie had said her father served in World War I, and her late husband, Grover, in World War II, and she embraced her Memorial Day tasks.

Petrie died Thursday at the age of 87.

Her greatest legacy will be the decades spent making certain that Memorial Day got the dignity it deserved, but that was only one of the many tasks she would handle in her years in the Elburn area. Village President Dave Anderson said Tuesday that, “she is, in my opinion, a classic Elburnite.”

A celebration of Petrie’s life is set for 3 p.m. Feb. 22 at Elburn American Legion Post 630, 112 N. Main St., Elburn.

Petrie was a charter member of the Elburn American Legion Auxiliary. On Poppy Day each year, Petrie worked on Main Street in Elburn, collecting donations and passing out poppies.

“For a long time, she collected at Kountry Kettle on Poppy Day,” Anderson said.

“She was always there at 5:30 a.m., and in the past few years, she had to have a chair.

She was there this past summer.”

Anderson praised Petrie’s work.

“From a patriot’s standpoint, she was at the very top of the list for the country, for

the state and for the community,” Anderson said. “She was very, very active in the legion auxiliary. She set up the kitchen in the community legion building. She was just a superior individual, and she was also very strong-willed, but in a positive way.”

Anderson recalled Petrie’s time working at Robert’s Drive-In in Geneva.

“Carrie was at times not only the waitress,” he said.

“She was the cook and the cashier, all at the same time. She was an extremely organized person.”

Petrie last year stepped down from her role on Memorial Day because

of health concerns. Just last month, she donated a Christmas tree for use in the village’s Christmas Stroll celebration.

She is survived by a daughter, Cara, and her granddaughter, Abigail. She was preceded in death by two sons.

According to her obituary, a memorial has been set up to benefit Petrie’s favorite charities. Checks may be made to the “Carrie Petrie Memorial” and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119.

Education in Action 2nd Grade Holidays Around the World Last month, the second grade students at Kaneland McDole Elementary enjoyed learning about different winter holidays celebrated around the world. The countries focused on were China, Israel, Italy, Mexico and Sweden. The students were taught different traditions that can take place during the winter season. Each second grade classroom was a different country, and students brought a passport and scrapbook to document their learning. As a souvenir, each child created a craft that represented the holiday.
