Kaneland debates STEM school opportunity SUGAR GROVE – Kaneland School District 302’s participation in a STEM partnership school remains in question after board members debated the issue Monday night.

Administrators described the opportunity as unique.

Renee Goier, Kaneland’s interim superintendent, said the program at the John C. Dunham STEM Partnership School on the Aurora University campus is open only to districts that have students with Aurora addresses.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math.

“It is not available anywhere else in the state,” Goier said, calling it “a unique opportunity we are fortunate to have.”

She said a decision about whether to pursue participation in the school would need to be made by the next board meeting, which is Jan. 26.

The school was touted by state leaders before its creation. Then-Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn in a news release

Board members heard details from two Kaneland administrators – Sarah Mumm, director of educational services for those in kindergarten through fifth grade, as well as Mike Purcell, director of educational services for those in sixth through 12th grade. The school includes students in third through eighth grades from the East Aurora, Indian Prairie and West Aurora school districts.

The plan would call for Kaneland to have 50 students at the school, as well as two teachers. Board members said it wasn’t clear which

students would be eligible, as it wasn’t described as a gifted program.

“This is not IMSA prep,” Purcell said, alluding to the Aurora-based Illinois Math and Science Academy, adding instead that “this is a different way to learn.”

Board members debated the cost, estimated at $375,000. Board member Peter Lopatin asked whether it was the best way for the district to spend $375,000 on STEM programs. Another board member, Tony Valente, said the curriculum looked unremarkable and was similar to what already was being offered at Kaneland. Teresa Witt, the board’s vice president, said “it does sound like a gifted program.”

Officials mentioned that there were students of all levels in the program.

An Elburn resident, Mark Weintraub, was upset as board members spoke and raised his hand asking if he might comment. He was told he would have to wait

until the end of the meeting, and he waited hours for an opportunity to speak in a public comment period.

Weintraub said he is familiar with the school, and he said officials would be letting a rare chance slip away if they chose not to be involved.

He said he believes the cost would be lower, but even at $375,000, it would be worth it to offer an opportunity for students who would benefit.

He said the district houses the Fox Valley Career Center and also RTI programs that offer opportunity for a portion of the students. He said he wanted board members to “put political differences aside” and move forward with participation in the school, adding, “I would really hope it’s a unanimous decision.”

Kane County Board member Vazquez dies at 51

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County leaders on Tuesday mourned the loss of their colleague Jesse Vazquez. Board member T.R. Smith, who sat next to Vazquez, decorated his empty desk with mementos. He asked the veterans at the County Board meeting to turn toward Vazquez’s empty seat for a final salute. Vazquez, 51, was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He had served County Board District 8 since 2008.

Vazquez died late Monday night, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said. He said an autopsy was scheduled for today.

Batavia starts planning for street improvements

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Officials this year want to get a head start on planning for the city’s annual street program in order to save money.

“For the past few years, the paving and concrete work for the annual street program was done late in the season,” Batavia Street Superintendent Scott Haines wrote in a memo to aldermen. “Staff would like to start the program earlier in the year to take advantage of more favorable pricing by going out for bids at the end of January.”

As proposed, the work would begin in late April or early May and be completed by the end of June.

“Staff will inspect sanitary and storm sewers and make appropriate repairs prior to the commencement of construction,” Haines said.

Seventh Ward Alderman Dave Brown said he supported the move.

“I look forward to the future,” he said, in addressing Haines at Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

Several streets would receive minor resurfacing this year, including North Jefferson Street from West Wilson Street to Illinois Avenue; North Jeffer-

son Street from Illinois to North avenues; Illinois Avenue from North Jackson Street to Republic Road; South Harrison Street from Main to Walnut streets; Walnut Street from the old railroad tracks to the city limits; South Jackson Street from West Wilson to First streets; Church Street from North Prairie to Hamlet streets; North College Street from Church to Spring streets; and Bluestem Lane from Woodland Hills Road to Chillem Drive.

Haines told aldermen that after the new city engineer is hired, there will have to be discussions about the program for 2016 and beyond.

“There are several other streets not on this list that require major resurfacing or reconstruction, and the funding for that work will have to be determined,” he said.

“If I were to list all of his roles and responsibilities in the dozens of community organizations and initiatives, it could come close to being a dissertation because he was just that type of amazing and caring human being,” Weisner

stated. “… He proved that the best thing we can be in this world is a great example. That, he truly was, and he will always be remembered as such.”

County Board members seemed shocked by Vazquez’s unexpected death. Theresa Barreiro described him as a dear family friend, and Deborah Allan said he really cared about the people he represented.

“He was so tightly tied to his district,” Allan said, describing the Democrat as the “heart and soul with his area.”

Smith said Vazquez would bring up ideas on issues that others wouldn’t think of.

“It made everybody think, and we’re going to miss that,” Smith said. “He’s going to be tough to replace.”

Two moments of silence were held on Vazquez’s behalf during the County Board meeting – one during the opening prayer and one before the final salute.

“One thing I know about Jesse is that he would want us to soldier on, being the proud Marine that he is,” Lauzen said.

County Board approves sale of Sixth Street School

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – The Sixth Street School property in Geneva is on the verge of changing ownership.

The Kane County Board on Tuesday unanimously approved a contract with the Geneva Public Library District, which will buy the former school site, 210 S. Sixth St. County Board Chairman Chris Lauzen said the purchase price is $1.5 million, plus up to $300,000 in demolition costs.

The contract indicates the county shall proceed to obtain bids for demolition work after both parties execute the agreement. The library will have the right to terminate the contract if the county fails to complete such work by Sept. 30, the contract states.

Geneva Library Board

President Bob Shiffler said the trustees are scheduled to vote on the contract Jan. 22.

He expects it will pass.

“I’m glad that we’ve been able to go through successful negotiations with the county,” he said.

The library has no current plans for the property, but officials are in the process of working on a space needs assessment that will help identify future needs, Shiffler said. He said the results will help the library decide which direction to take, such as moving to a new site or revising the existing building.

If a new building is needed, Shiffler said, patrons will want it downtown.

“This is the only site available downtown,” he said, noting that’s why the library pursued the deal with the county.

According to the contract, the closing is set for Oct. 8 at Chicago Title Insurance Company in Geneva unless otherwise agreed to by the parties.

The building currently houses the Regional Office of Education. Lauzen said the office is considering several options for its relocation.

‘HE IS THE REAL DEAL’ Gustafson’s retirement is the end of an era in Elburn

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – After watching Ken Gustafson spend decades working as a pharmacist in Elburn, one of his sons said it was wonderful to see his father finally relaxing and doing what he loved.

There his father was, out removing snow from neighbors’ driveways on a frigid winter morning in Elburn, “just because he could,” Jon Gustafson said.

In late December, Ken Gustafson, 66, retired from his position as a pharmacist at the Elburn Jewel-Osco. That ended a significant era in the village. Previously, Gustafson and his wife, Mary, had run Gliddon’s Drug Store in downtown Elburn, from 1982 through 2007, when Jewel-Osco came to town. Before that, they worked at Gliddon’s under Mary Gustafson’s father, Almer Gliddon, who bought the store in 1946.

Ken and Mary Gustafson went to work as pharmacists at Jewel-Osco. Mary Gustafson retired as a pharmacist five years ago at age 62, but she still works at the store. Ken Gustafson is done working there, but he left an impression. Linda Wiss, the store’s director of pharmacy, called him “absolutely one of a kind, absolutely the best kind there is.”

“He refreshed everybody,” Wiss said. “He is the real deal.

Nothing stops him from taking care of everybody. … He’ll take the time to take care of every single customer. I feel honored to have worked with him for 7½ years, and I am blessed to call him a friend.”

Mary Gustafson said pharmacies always had been a part of her life. Her grandfather, George Wilcox, ran Wilcox Pharmacy in Hampshire. Also, there were uncles involved in pharmacy, and, of course, her father. Ken

Ken Gustafson retired late last year as a pharmacist at Jewel-Osco in Elburn. That ends a nearly 70-year stretch of the family providing pharmaceutical care in the village. His wife, Mary, also was a pharmacist, as was her father, Almer Gliddon, who ran Gliddon’s Drug Store in Elburn. Gliddon bought the store in 1946, and – after he retired – Ken and Mary Gustafson ran it until May 2007, when Jewel-Osco bought them out.

Gustafson didn’t intend to go into pharmacy at first, having graduated from Northern Illinois University with a marketing degree. But in the 1970s, he met his future wife. They both worked at the St. Charles Chronicle, a predecessor to the Kane County Chronicle, and their desks were near each other.

After Almer Gliddon indicated he was “getting old,” Mary and Ken Gustafson both went to study pharmacy in St. Louis, understanding that Gliddon soon might be looking to retire. By 1981, Mary Gustafson was working at her father’s shop, and her husband was working at drug stores in the Tri-Cities area.

By 1982, Gliddon sold the store to his daughter and sonin-law, although he continued to work there for a time. But

for most of the next 25 years, Ken and Mary Gustafson were the only pharmacists in Elburn at their shop at 116 N. Main St. Their sons, Jon and Eric, said they spent as much time at the shop as they did at home. The entire family worked there, and an uncle worked in the same part of the building. The brothers said they loved their jobs, and they said it was an enjoyable way of life, but it did mean their parents couldn’t both take a vacation at the same time. Their parents both fielded calls after the store closed, and the brothers said they always did what they could to accommodate customers.

Jon Gustafson lives in Elburn. He is studying to be a nurse. Eric Gustafson lives in Texas, where he is a police

officer. They both remember working at the store.

“I think as soon as I was tall enough to reach the cash register, I was in there as a clerk, stocking shelves and checking expiration dates,” Jon Gustafson said, adding, “it never really felt like work for me.”

He said he learned to have a sense of community. He would see friends and relatives all the time. But he wished he had been able to take vacations with both parents.

Eric Gustafson said when he was a fifth-grader, he started dusting some shelves, and “it turned into doing a little bit of everything.”

“Being that it was a small town, and being that it was so close to our home anyway, it was an extension of home,”

he said. “I have a lot of memories about that place. Being in town, close to our house, if you wanted to see mom or dad, that’s where you would go. … A lot of work was put in, but it didn’t feel that you were stuck at work.”

Ken Gustafson described it as a different time in the village. In the downtown area, there was his store, and Dave Anderson, now the village president, ran a grocery store.

And the store Ken Gustafson called the “survivor,” Ream’s Elburn Market, remains in downtown Elburn, as popular as ever.

Anderson called the Gustafsons “public servants in their business.” He mentioned how they gave out their home numbers so they could be reached after hours.

“They were, in my opinion, a prime example of hometown Americana,” Anderson said, noting the family members remain involved in village activities. Gliddon was a Village Board member, and his wife, Margaret, was a school board member. The Gustafsons are active in the Elburn Lions Club. Ken Gustafson is on the village’s police pension board. Mary Gustafson is on the planning commission.

Anderson said he was happy for them.

“They are great people,” he said. “I feel I have been blessed to have known folks like that.”

At their home, the Gustafsons spread out newspaper reports through the years, showing significant moments, such as the sale of the store to Jewel-Osco. While they said many considered that to be the end of an era in the village, they said it actually worked out well for them.

They were able to be employees at a place and take vacations together.

Wiss said it indeed was good for Jewel-Osco. The pharmacy manager said she learned a lot from the Gustafsons and worked closely with Ken Gustafson. Wiss said she has been at the Elburn Jewel-Osco store since it opened. She said she went to Gliddon’s before the store closed to meet with Ken Gustafson and “you get an immediate good feeling about him.

You can feel the warmth.”

“He is passionate about what he does, and he is dedicated to the community,” she said. “He is unbelievably generous, completely genuine. He is an all-around big-hearted guy.”

Neither Jon nor Eric Gustafson followed the path of pharmacy, although they said they both greatly respect their parents. Jon Gustafson said he did “really think about it and considered it.”

“After seeing how hard my father worked, the long hours … I know he loved what he did, but I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors, and standing behind a desk 10 hours a day didn’t appeal

to me,” Jon Gustafson said.

“My dad was gone before I would get up to go to school, and he would get home after I was in bed sometimes. …

He always prided himself on never making any mistakes.

That’s partially why he stayed a little bit longer. He put a lot of thought into it.”

The brothers said they were happy to see their parents be able to enjoy more time together after the store closed. But they both acknowledged the town likely forever changed at that point.

“It definitely felt like the end of the small-town feel, when my parents decided it was time to hang it up,” Eric Gustafson said. “It changed the small-town dynamic a little bit.”

Ken Gustafson said he understood that many people felt that way.

“You always feel kind of sad to see the end of an era,” he said. “But we’re at an age where we want to slow down a little.”

So, it’s back to plowing his neighbors’ driveways and, once it gets warmer, cutting their grass, too. Perhaps, he said, he’ll add a part-time job down the road. Wiss said she wasn’t surprised to hear that Ken Gustafson was keeping busy after retiring.

“He’s that guy,” she said.

“On his day off, he doesn’t know how to sit there with idle hands. He’s a really good guy.”

Kaneland teacher seeks former students for letters

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Judy Fabrizius is looking for 20 former students from her family and consumer science classes at Kaneland High School.

She wants to remind them of what they thought about their future five years ago.

“It’s a one-day diary,” Fabrizius said. “I tried to make it more personable and gave them an outline to use.”

The outline also seeks the details of their lives down to the color of their bedrooms and bedspreads, relationships with parents, siblings and friends, parents’ jobs and pets.

“The goal of this letter is to actually have them write everything they can think of because what they believe is so important,” she said.

“In five years, they won’t remember.”

The students turn in self-addressed, unsealed envelopes with a “forever” stamp on it, to which Fabrizius adds her own letter – an update on what Kaneland is doing five years later.

She mailed out about 75 letters in November, and 20 were returned, so Fabrizius said she is turning to the local newspaper to see whether those students can be contacted so they can receive their five-year letters.

Engineering study to begin for I-88, Route 47 interchange

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com SUGAR GROVE – The Interstate 88 and Route 47 interchange project this year is entering a new phase of engineering work, but the finished product still is several years away, Village President Sean Michels said Tuesday.

The Sugar Grove Village Board in December unanimously approved an engineering agreement with Chicago-based Graef-USA Inc. to complete Phase I engineering on the interchange project, subject to attorney review, Michels said.

The engineering phase will involve completing a study for

full access at the interchange under the scenario of adding ramps to and from eastbound I-88, according to a village board report. The current interchange at I-88 and Route 47 is a half-diamond with access ramps to and from the west only.

Village officials have been working for years to secure funding and follow government regulations to upgrade the partial interchange to a full one.

Michels said people always ask him when the full project will be complete. His latest answer Tuesday was sometime between 2021 and 2023.

“I’m always pushing our staff and consultants to make up as much time as possible,”

Michels said. “[The interchange] doesn’t just benefit the village, it benefits the whole region, the whole area.”

The full interchange eventually will have tolls in both directions similar to the I-88 and Eola Road interchange, Michels said. Toll money will offset the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority’s projected contribution to the project of up to $10 million, which is half of the project’s estimated $20 million price tag.

The village expects the Federal Highway Administration to provide $5 million from previous Prairie Parkway funds and the Illinois Department of Transportation to contribute about $4 million. The village

and Kane County together will be responsible for paying about $1 million, or 5 percent of the project’s total cost, Michels said.

The first engineering phase could take up to three years to complete due in part to the

need for the interchange to be designed for future traffic models as opposed to current traffic patterns, he said.

The second engineering phase might take up to two to three years, followed by actual construction, Michels said.

Called a “road diet,” the plan would reduce traffic

lanes from four to two, plus a center turn lanes and bike lanes, after the Illinois Department of Transportation resurfaces Route 31 from Elizabeth Place south into Batavia this spring.

The potential lane reconfiguration, known as the “road diet,” would start just north of Fabyan Parkway and

end at Elizabeth Place.

The community is invited to two open houses at 7 p.m.

Jan. 28 and Feb. 4, at the Geneva Public Works Department, 1800 South St. After the public reviews the plan, the project consultant will give a presentation at 7:30 p.m., followed by audience questions at 8 p.m.

The Geneva City Council will take resident input at the two open houses into consideration before taking a vote on any possible Route 31 configuration changes.

Details about the IDOT resurfacing project will be announced closer to the tentative project start date in April, officials said.

Orlando spent many years working as a truck driver and was a member of Teamsters Local 705. He was a “jack of all trades”, putzing around fixing whatever he could find. Orlando was a wonderful man and tended to think of others’ needs before his own. He was a devout Catholic and a family man. Orlando enjoyed spending hours playing games with his family, especially his eight grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

She was born on October 13, 1928, in Ansonia, Ohio, the daughter of Celest and Mary (Stephen) Coryn. Shortly thereafter her family moved to New York City’s Upper West Side where Sidonie lived for nearly fifty years.

In New York, Sidonie studied painting and drawing at Columbia University and at the Art Students League in Manhattan. Sidonie was a talented painter and illustrator who worked in design and layout for Vogue Pattern Books and other fashion publications. She went on to illustrate many books for Knopf and other publishing houses, the most famous being her innovative illustrations for Julia Child’s celebrated works “Mastering the

The more than 450 drawings that Sidonie produced for Volume 2 were described by Mrs. Child as an “incredible achievement.” In 1981 Sidonie moved to St. Charles, her father’s birthplace. For many years she painted and taught in her studio on the east side of St. Charles.

In addition she was an active member of St. Patrick parish and worked in the parish office. For several years, Sidonie produced original artwork for the cover of the weekly parish bulletin.

Sidonie is preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her sister, Julie Coryn (Austin Hyde) of Media, PA; and several cousins in the St. Charles area.

Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 400 Cedar Street, St. Charles with Father Ryan Browning, celebrant.

10 St. Charles woman charged with felony drug possession

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles woman remained in the Kane County Jail on Tuesday afternoon on a $200,000 bond after she was charged in December with several counts of felony drug possession, according to court records.

Julie B. Welch, 50, of the 1200 block of In- Julie B. Welch diana Avenue, was charged on Dec. 23 after an investigation of her home by members of the North Central Narcotics Task Force.

Her next court date is set for Jan. 22.

Welch has been charged with several counts of felony drug possession and felony manufacturing/ delivering a controlled

substance. She also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.

The felony charges include unlawfully possessing with intent to deliver morphine, hydrocodone, amphetamine, hydromorphone, oxycodone, methylphenidate, diazepam, clonazepam, alprazolam, flurazepam and carisoprodol.

Hydrocone is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers, according to the website www.drugs. com.

Amphetamine is a stimulant and an appetite suppressant, the website stated, and stimulates the central nervous system (nerves and brain) by increasing the amount of certain chemicals in the body.

Welch also is being charged with a felony count of possessing with intent to deliver more than 30 grams of marijuana.

State’s attorney: Felonies down in Kane County

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – The number of felonies filed in 2014 in Kane County is down slightly from 2013 and show a larger decline over a five-year period, State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said.

There were 2,258 felony filings in 2014, down about 3 percent from the 2,329 filings in 2013, according to data McMahon provided from a State’s Attorney’s Office annual report preview on Tuesday during his monthly media briefing. The number of felony filings in 2010 was 3,158.

McMahon said there has been a nationwide decrease in serious and violent crime.

“This is not unique to Kane County,” McMahon said at the briefing. “I think our numbers are reflective of a broader trend.”

The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office is also seeing a decrease in calls to its felony screening unit that is comparable to the decrease in charge of felonies filed, McMahon said.

McMahon said he is a believer in diversion programs, and that the numbers are reflective of the use of programs in Kane County.

Other reasons for the overall decrease in numbers the past few years include community members seeing the consequences of high crime and violent crime rates, as

well as police departments proactively going into communities and keeping an ongoing dialogue with residents, McMahon said.

The number of misdemeanor DUI filings in Kane County also are down 28 percent – there were 946 filings in 2014 compared to 1,318 in 2013, McMahon said.

Many misdemeanor DUI cases are being filed under a local ordinance and tried under local prosecutors, McMahon said. Geneva and St. Charles are two of six municipalities that prosecute their own misdemeanor DUIs. The full State’s Attorney’s Office annual report will be released sometime before April, McMahon said.

As no examples were provided by Ms. Boelke about the twisting of the Constitution, may I point out the multitude of Republican attacks on voting rights of our citizens as guaranteed by this document as such.

voting rights and not to restrict them. This is clearly not the Republican view. Their strenuous efforts to suppress voting mocks our Constitution, and I find this despicable and un-American.

Ms. Boelke did mention the “heavy voting” for Republicans in the last national election. Overall, voting was actually extremely low. Voter turnout was the lowest in about 75 years, so – percentage-wise – Republican victories would appear to have some significance. However, it has been proven repeatedly that when voter turnout is low, Republicans often have the advantage.

Moreover, many of the Republicans that were elected were in red states and won by razor-thin margins over their opponents.

Concerning federal spending, please consult Article I, Section

7 (1787), in which all taxing and spending authority is delegated to the House of Representatives. Last time I checked, the Republicans were in charge of the national purse strings. This is how the House of Representatives shut down the government – they stopped paying the bills.

This misuse of legislative power for political purposes is alarming and contrary to the principles of governance as set forth in the preamble to the Constitution. Such conduct is not only reprehensible but treasonous and unpatriotic.

And, speaking of “billions” of taxpayers’ dollars, the national debt grew more quickly under President Ronald Reagan than Obama. Indeed!

Weber, Knights pound Plano Sophomore scores 26 points to trigger nonconference rout

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland punctuated Tuesday’s nonconference girls basketball victory against Plano by ostensibly flipping Reapers coach John Chernick’s commands.

When Chernick barked the occasional, “Run Reaper!” an imperative nod to one of the team’s offenses, a Knights player often darted in front of an entry pass, gained possession and advanced downcourt.

At that point, the words became “Run, Reaper,” an invitation for the visitors to give chase.

That sequence had a considerable shelf life as the Knights rolled, 78-45, and improved to 11-3.

“Oh, yeah,” Knights senior forward/guard Emily Grams said. “We’re trying to work our offense from our defense and just really push the ball and work hard. Yeah, just outhustle the other team.”

Kaneland converted that equation into a season-high offensive output against the Reapers (6-12), a team it eliminated in a Class 3A Plano Regional semifinal last February.

Rounding into form after missing much of December while recovering from a concussion and later illness, sophomore guard Morgan Weber sparked Kaneland with a career-best 26 points. Her previous high of 16 points came in her varsity debut last winter.

Weber drilled one 3 and had three free throws. The rest of her points came from the field, as she displayed persistence in transition, as well as a strong midrange jumper in the halfcourt game.

“When I reached 10 points, I was like, ‘I got this, I can score 20,’ ” Weber said.

The Knights, of course, countered with speed, but also enjoyed a size advantage that included 6-foot-3 junior center Bailey Crimmins down low.

“We were moving the ball pretty well inside and out. We were running. So we were happy with the way we played,” Knights coach Ernie Colombe said. “That’s kind of how we’ve been practicing. We push the ball hard in practice. So I’m

really happy with it; 78 points, what can you say?”

A broadcast of the game aired on a TV monitor in a hallway outside the gym, minus sound. To watch it would have been to marvel at modern technology, but the act also would have subtracted considerably from the ambience.

Although the Knights’ pep band was not in attendance, Kaneland’s cheerleaders remained vocal while Chernick and assistant Al Gruidl followed suit from the bench.

“We’re trying to adopt a real fast-paced, aggressive style,” Chernick said, “and again, to their credit, they forced us to work to get shots. We’d like to shoot a lot quicker than that and make it a transition game.

To some extent, I thought the tempo was good for us, but we just gave up too many easy baskets to them, which was not being in the right spots defensively.”

Kaneland hopes to keep things stirring Friday night against visiting Northern Illinois Big 12 East rival Yorkville. Two of the Knights’ losses have come in league play.

“I think anyone in our conference can beat anyone else on any given night,” Grams said, “so we’ve got to be ready to play at all times.”

North’s Bergren chooses swiftly A whirlwind recruitment yielded peace of mind – and a return to his roots – for St. Charles North football senior Jordan Bergren.

Bergren said Minnesota State’s coaching staff only pursued him the past few weeks but it was long enough to convince the 6-foot-4, 225-pound defensive end that Mankato, Minnesota is the place for him.

Bergren offered the Division II national runner-up Mavericks his verbal commitment on Monday.

“I’ve been in the recruiting process for about two years now and over the past two months, I realized it was coming to an end and I really needed to start thinking about it and deciding,” Bergren said. “When it all came to a conclusion, it was just a good time. I didn’t wait too long so I’d lose the [scholarship] offer and I didn’t pick too soon so I’d regret my decision.

“Over the entire course, I’ve had people helping me out. ... I don’t think I’d have been able to make the right decision for myself if I didn’t have all those people supporting me.”

Bergren credited his football coaches at North, local recruiting consultant Tracey Bosch and Speed School trainer Joe Giustino with helping him secure a college football future.

PREP ZONE Jay Schwab Minnesota State’s deep postseason push limited the time coaches could devote to recruiting but Bergren said offensive coordinator Jason Eck and defensive coordinator Jake Dickert swung into town a couple weeks ago and met Bergren over lunch.

Bergren scheduled a campus visit for the ensuing weekend, combining the trip to check out another Minnesota option, St. Cloud State. He said the trip hooked him on Minnesota State.

“I know the program has done well for itself the last few years in their conference,” Bergren said. “I know they’ve had a very solid, winning record and know the coaching staff there seemed like good guys I was going to be coached by and led by. It was just the program as a whole, and not just the record, that made me want to be there.”

Plenty of family history in the state of Minnesota should ease Bergren’s transition.

He lived in Minnesota as a little boy before the family relocated to St. Charles, and a grandfather still resides there.

Plus, his older brother, Jake

Bergren, is a senior baseball player at the University of Minnesota. Jake Bergren might stick around the state for a while after his expected graduation in the spring.

“He gave me good advice [on recruiting],” Bergren said of his big brother. “I took some of it to heart but still realized whatever my choice was, it had to be mine.”

Bergren was the Upstate Eight Conference River co-defensive player of the year and a First-Team Chronicle All-Area selection as a senior, leading the 7A playoff participant North Stars with 14 sacks.

Bergren also has played baseball at North but said he might concentrate on football training this spring.

Wieties to run at Army: Batavia senior cross country/ track and field standout Ryan Wieties has committed to run collegiately at Army.

Wieties was among the top 100 runners in this year’s IHSA Class 3A state meet, clocking a time of 15:21 at Peoria.

He also excelled during track season in the half-mile, qualifying for the state meet in the 800 and 4x800 relay.

St. Charles North players laud the team’s energetic style under second-year coach Sean Masoncup.

Apparently, that vigor’s on reserve even when Masoncup’s hands are tied.

With the North Stars missing classes Jan. 7 and 8 because of cold weather school cancellations, team captains scrambled to organize a workout Jan. 8 at the St. Charles park district.

A night later, the North Stars handled host Batavia in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play, citing their shoot around for helping them navigate the obligatory early rust phase.

“It was beneficial because we knew how big this game was, and we weren’t going to come in and take it lightly,” senior guard Ashling Davern said.

“So we knew that we needed to be focused, so it was just good to be together.”

On Saturday, with a game under their belt and their stamina recharged, the North Stars capped the first day of the Chicagoland Invitational Showcase at Fremd with an overtime victory against Fenwick.

Junior Claire Jakaitis drilled the winning shot off a set play with two seconds remaining.

“Everyone’s really excited.

We’re hoping to have a really good postseason,” Davern said. “Everyone’s just very focused in practices. The big thing is we’re getting excited for each other and we’re picking each other up when we get down, and then we have big stretches.”

Kaneland • Junior • Boys Basketball Why he was selected: Helped lead Kaneland to consecutive wins against DeKalb and LaSalle-Peru Kaneland junior forward Ryan David’s ascent has been one of the most encouraging storylines this season for the Knights, and David’s strong play continued in wins Friday against DeKalb and Saturday against LaSalle-Peru.

David, who scored a combined 32 points in the wins, is the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week.

He spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab about the successful weekend; the following is an edited transcript: How big was that DeKalb win?

It was a huge win, being able to get us back into the conference race. Everyone on the team did extremely well, coming out and playing with a lot of energy to pick up a big win like that, and Dylan (Vaca) being able to make those clutch free throws.

What’s clicking for you this year offensively?

We just started simplifying things, breaking down to the basics, making simple passes, setting good screens, finding the open man, taking open shots, crashing the boards. Just the simple things to get it done.

What’s a part of your game besides scoring you take the most pride in?

I’m going to have to say probably defense. I take a lot of pride in my defense, being able to shut my man down, winning that 1-on-1 battle that you have with him.

If you had to pick one teammate to help with some difficult homework, who would it be?

Probably Jake Gomes. He’s probably one of the smartest kids on our team.

Marian Hossa didn’t really have a word for it. So standing in front of his locker stall, Hossa grabbed an imaginary hockey stick and animatedly began illustrating one of the things Brandon Saad does so well.

Using a reporter as a dumbstruck defenseman, Hossa pantomimed how Saad can execute something of a full-speed crossover dribble on ice – faking to one side of the defender, freezing him, then throwing the puck to the other side and basically jumping over the guy to regain the puck and power past him.

“Not many players you see [who] can do it in the league,” Hossa said. “And he’s one of those who are able to do it.”

There really isn’t a word for a lot of the things Saad does so well. That’s what makes him a rising star in this league. And it’s why he’s so often compared with Hossa – the consummate two-way, all-around player who can make all the splashy moves, yet who also does all the little things away from the puck that make all the difference.

It certainly doesn’t hurt that Saad spends most of his shifts alongside Hossa and Jonathan Toews, two of the league’s premier 200-foot players.

“It’s a great spot to be in,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said.

“Those two guys, you get to see what it takes to be a pro, you get to see the preparation that goes into it, Brandon the importance Saad of every shift. … I think it’s a great opportunity for him, and I think he’s been real good as we’ve gone along here.”

Marian Saad is playHossa ing his best hockey since his revelatory work in the Western Conference final, when he had four goals and five assists with a plus-7 rating in seven games. He has five goals in his past eight games, and has been stellar away from the puck, as well.

He’s fourth on the team with 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists) on the season.

He had a pair of goals Friday in Edmonton, twice crashing the net and putting in rebounds from his linemates on 2-on-1s. That’s the blueprint for the 22-year-old Saad, whom Quenneville has repeatedly said can be a premier power

forward in the NHL. Saad has made no secret of his admiration for Hossa’s game, but it’s not really a mentor/mentee kind of relationship. Hossa doesn’t sit down with Saad before and after games and delve deep into the details of the game, breaking down the finer points of defensive positioning and offensive awareness.

It’s more of a watch-andlearn kind of thing. When Hossa was a young player, he learned by watching Ottawa teammate Daniel Alfredsson from up close, and Colorado stars Peter Forsberg and Joe Sakic from afar.

Saad has two guys right next to him from which to learn by osmosis.

“It’s obviously a great spot to be in,” Saad said. “I’m playing with two great players every night, and I can learn a lot from them.”

Saad will be a restricted free agent in July, and contract negotiations won’t begin until the season’s over.

He’s due a massive raise from his entry-level deal worth $894,167 a year. And even with the salary cap crunch looming, there’s no doubt general manager Stan Bowman will lock in Saad for years to come.

If it were just about points, Saad would be worth plenty.

But it’s all the hard-to-quantify little things that make him so valuable.

“He’s getting better and better, at such a young age,” Hossa said. “He’s going to be a dominant player in the league.”

While anger is a normal emotion, the problem with a hair-trigger temper is that people who fly off the handle often shoot themselves in the foot. That’s why it’s important to develop tools to recognize, control and channel anger effectively without exploding.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips A first step in doing that is to analyze what may be setting you off. Does being overtired, hungry or not feeling up to par cause you to lash out? Feeling vulnerable has been known to make people feel angry and has negatively affected relationships. Anything I should know ahead of time to be prepared?

Dear Reader: The first thing many new users of hearing aids notice is that sounds seem strange. Think of how different your own voice sounds when you listen to a tape recording of yourself.

You may also be more aware than ever before of your footsteps, your car’s motor, the sounds you make as you chew your food, and just about any other environmental noise. Many hearing aids can be adjusted to lower the volume of unwanted noise. But more important, with time, your brain will get better at tuning it out.

You may also find that the hearing aid doesn’t do one of the things you’d most hoped that it would: understand every word in a conversation. Remember that hearing every word isn’t necessary. The goal is to follow conversations easily in different environments. Continue to rely on the visual cues that you’ve been using to understand words, like lip movements, facial expressions and hand gestures.

Getting used to a hearing aid

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff takes time, usually at least a month to six weeks. But it may take as long as several months.

If you don’t notice a marked improvement by the end of the first month, however, your hearing aid may not be right for you.

While you’re adjusting to your hearing aid, remember these tips: • Start off with one-on-one conversations, which are the easiest ones to understand. Gradually work up to conversations with two or more people.

• Realize that understanding conversations in noisy places, such as restaurants and parties, will be difficult at first. With time and practice, your ability to hear in these settings will improve.

Watch the person who is speaking so you can pick up gestures and other visual cues. Position yourself close to the person who is speaking.

• Install a telephone amplifier at home to help you hear telephone conversations.

• If using the phone is a problem, consider email or text

messaging instead.

• Finally, wear your hearing aid. The more you use it, the faster you are likely to adjust to it, and the better your hearing will be.

I’m often surprised by how some of my patients resist my suggestion that they get a hearing aid. They remember what hearing aids used to look like: large, unattractive objects stuck inside the ear, visible to everyone. They’re concerned that a hearing aid will make them look old.

They also have heard that hearing aids don’t improve the most common problem they have: hearing conversations in noisy places. They’ve heard that hearing aids may make the voice of someone speaking to them louder, but that they also make the noise louder. So it’s not easier to hear conversations.

Today’s hearing aids are tiny and often invisible. They also are a lot better at amplifying a voice nearby without similarly increasing the noise.

Dr. Wallace: Just before Thanksgiving I met a new guy at my cousin’s wedding. He asked me to dance and we hit it off right away. We started dating, and now we are seeing each other exclusively.

Lately, he has been acting a bit possessive to the point that he wants to influence what I wear, what I eat and how I wear my hair. It started when I got my hair cut and he said I should let it grow back to longer hair because it looks more feminine. Now he has started telling me what colors look best on me and even suggests that I lay off the goodies because I look like I’ve gained weight. For Christmas, he gave me a turquoise sweater because he thinks I should wear more “colorful” clothes.

But I don’t particularly care for the color. He also wants me to start using nail polish to match my clothes, but I really prefer a neutral shade I’m starting to have mixed feelings about his small demands. Sometimes it bothers me, but I think I still like him.

Dr. Wallace: My parents were born and raised in Japan, and they demand that I study hard and get all As. I’m a conscientious student and when my grades were mailed home I received five As and one B-plus, but this wasn’t good enough for them. I

I love living on the farm with my grandparents. My mother said it was my decision and she would respect whatever I decide. Would I be considered selfish if I didn’t move in with my mother?

Blockages can be dangerous in bridge. If it is, say, declarer’s singleton ace opposite dummy’s king-queen-jack, usually declarer should cash his ace as quickly as possible, then work out how to reach the dummy to cash those winners.

Other blockages are less easy to anticipate. In this deal, how should South play in three no-trump after West leads the spade king?

Declarer seems to have nine tricks: one spade, one heart, two diamonds and five clubs. In clubs, the textbooks say that a 3-2 split happens 67.8 percent of the time.

What can possibly go wrong?

The original declarer took the third trick with his spade ace, cashed his club ace and led his club three to dummy’s king. When East discarded a diamond, South crossed to his hand with a diamond and led the club nine, but when West did not cover with his jack, the suit was irreparably blocked.

It is true that East might have played the club 10 from, say, J-10-x.

But it could not have cost South to lead his club nine on the second round to dummy’s king. Then, when East discarded, South could have returned to his hand, led the club three to dummy’s eight and made the contract.

When declarer is playing a spot card from his hand, it is often better to play the second-lowest rather than the lowest. Occasionally, that will even unblock a suit.
