‘Trees’ exhibit open at Peck Farm Park

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Urban trees soothe the senses and calm people down, they save money by reducing energy costs and increase income to retailers as trees increase how much customers spend, according to various studies.

Andi Dierich, of the Morton Arboretum’s Community Tree program, gave a short talk on the benefits of trees Saturday at Peck Farm Park in Geneva, celebrating the opening of the Geneva Park District’s “Trees of Illinois” exhibit.

Dierich said a tree census done in 2010 found more than 157 million trees in a seven-county area of Kane, DuPage, Cook, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will.

“They collected all this data; they brought it back in house,” Dierich said. “The census found that the trees in the seven-county census reduce energy costs by $44 million.”

The study found that urban trees remove about 677,000 tons of carbon a year – that is, they absorb 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide – and they remove about 18,080 tons of pollution from the air each year.

Trees also were found to affect home values by 6 percent in lower income areas, they create a sound barrier and their presence in urban areas

“People want to walk in areas where there’s trees lined along the streets,” Dierich said.

Trees also factor into car crashes, she said, as 1.9 percent of car crashes involve trees.

“And of that, when you look at injuries, it was extremely elevated,” she said, adding that trees are so sturdy, even when vehicles hit them.

The study also found that trees affect commercial districts, in that shoppers will linger longer and prefer to shop in areas that have trees.

“It does increase the amount of money people are willing to spend in shopping areas by 7 percent to 10 percent,” Dierich said. “So businesses can really thrive.”

Canadian celebration All-Canada Show wraps weekend run in St. Charles

The 31st annual event gave his relatively new organization – Take a Vet Fishing – the exposure it needed and wanted, he said.

“We’ll definitely be back,” the Bartlett resident said.

Held at Pheasant Run Resort in far-east St. Charles, the All-Canada Show featured more than 100 exhibitors and several seminars with such titles as “Bass, Pike, and Muskie – Oh Yeah!” and “Great Canadian Hunts.”

It ended Sunday and was the only All-Canada Show for 2014 because of a change in ownership, according to its website. In past years, the event would travel to other Midwestern cities, including Milwaukee and Indianapolis.

The four-day show bills itself as a place where people can plan and book their next trip to Canada, as it offers information on Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and, among other areas, British Columbia.

For Ken Klank of Geneva, Quetico was the destination.

“We’re planning a trip,” he said.

BATAVIA – The Just Food Initiative of the Fox Valley will host a free seminar titled “Allergies and Your Food: What’s the Connection?” from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 26, at Calvary Episcopal Church, 222 S. Batavia Ave., Batavia.

The event will be led by Dr. Erin Massey of St. Charles, who specializes in diagnostic tests and follow-up for people exhibiting allergic reactions, especially to foods.

A Sportfishing Spectacular Although most exhibitors were from Canada, some, like suburban-based PhotoTaxidermy, were local.

Mark Fiebig of PhotoTaxidermy said his company offers a less expensive, quicker alternative to traditional taxidermy. It turns photographs of hunters’ and fishermen’s trophies into a replica printed on a fabric/polyester removable adhesive, allowing people to peel and stick the trophies onto nearly any surface.

“We’re giving fishing and hunting enthusiasts another option,” Fiebig said, noting the All-Canada Show was a chance for him to partner with various lodges.

Garstecki – who participates in the Professional Musky Tournament Trail – spent the weekend telling at-

tendees about Take a Vet Fishing. Its one-day events – set this year for June 8 in Wisconsin and Sept. 28 in Minnesota – include four hours of fishing and a veterans memorial party.

Inspired by a friend in the Marine Corps, Garstecki started Take a Vet Fishing as a way to help veterans who are disabled or suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, he said.

As someone not in the armed forces, Garstecki said, this is his way of giving back.

He said he was encouraged at the All-Canada Show when veterans would stop by his booth and donate items, such as a hat.

“We’re doing the right thing for the vets,” Garstecki said.

Lottery tickets stolen at store, officials say

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com KANEVILLE – A customer cashing in on scratch-off lottery tickets at a Kaneville store last week stole a batch in front of the clerk, according to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report.

According to the report, a man entered Hill’s Country Store, 2S133 Harter Road, at about 7:20 p.m. Thursday to redeem $37 in winning scratch-off lottery tickets and sought to purchase $37 worth of The Good Life tickets, another scratch-off game.

While the employee counted the tickets, the customer reportedly told her he wanted the rest of the roll.

The clerk pulled out the tickets and put them on the counter, police reported.

The clerk was calculating how much the customer owed when he picked up the tickets and said, “We’re good, right?” according to the report.

The clerk reportedly told him that he owed more money, and he repeated himself, saying, “So we’re good then, right?”

Again, the clerk said,

“no,” but the man said, “OK,” and walked out with the tickets, according to the report.

He reportedly left in a newer, dark colored car that was last seen heading west on Harter Road.

After he left, the employee reportedly grabbed a calculator and figured out what he owed.

“She grabs the side of her head with both hands and put her head down,” police reported, describing security footage of the incident.

The tickets reportedly cost $1 each, and the store has to pay for those that were stolen, according to the report.

The report did not indicate how many tickets were stolen but noted the Illinois Lottery has been informed of the theft, and the stolen tickets are no longer valid.

The sheriff’s reported indicated the store would pursue charges if the offender was located.

The suspect was described as wearing a navy jacket and a Chicago Cubs shirt.

He had short hair and glasses.

Store owner Pat Hill declined to comment for the story.

Literacy groups seeks volunteers for program

GENEVA – The Geneva Park District is sponsoring a beginning beekeeping class, which will begin Jan. 21 and will continue for eight Tuesdays through March 11.

Mark your calendars How did we possibly get to 2014 already? Doesn’t it seem not that long ago that we were heading into a new millennium? Remember those eyeglasses where the zeros became the lenses and – each year after – they popped up again on Dec. 31? I even saw them again this past New Year’s Eve. If an idea is good and it works, why not stick with it?

Our events and festivals are more than good – they are great, and they have stood the test of time. Swedish Days is celebrating 65 years this year. Two of our other festivals are in their 30-plus years; one has surpassed 10 years; and another has been successful for the past six years.

Thinking about ways that we can enhance these events, while complimenting favorites already in place, is a never-ending topic in our office.

Producing high-quality festivals is always at top of mind and – in order to do that – there are many balls to juggle.

Fermilab Arts Series kicks off with brass quintet

Linda Sue Sloggett was born Dec. 26, 1951, in Aurora, the first child of John and Shirley Sloggett of Batavia. She graduated from Batavia High School.

Linda Sue was united in marriage to Blaine A. Lippert of Aurora on Oct. 9, 1971, after getting engaged in 10 days and married in three months. They joyfully renewed their wedding vows in Hawaii on their 29th anniversary, and were blessed with over 42 wonderful years of marriage.

Known as “Sue” to almost everyone, she was a wonderful and loving wife, terrific mother and grandmother. She was a great homemaker and cook, who enjoyed her family the most.

During the children’s school

years, she liked to attend their music (trumpet) events and their athletic contests. She was a Brownie leader and room mother.

Sue loved being “Grannie” with her grandchildren. “Sweet Sue” took care of everybody and her various employers benefited from her terrific people skills. She enjoyed decorating, and her default television channel was HGTV. She is survived by her husband, Blaine Lippert, East Moline; children (and spouses) Kristi (David) Mumma, Silvis and Jeff (Amy)of Lippert, Marion, Iowa; grandchildren Jordan, Collin, Brandon and Hallie Lippert in Marion, and Megan and Grace Mumma in Silvis; siblings, Harryette (Keith) Whittlinger of Penfield, N.Y.; John (Mary Phyl) Sloggett Jr. of Forest, Ind., and Dean (Mary Beth) Sloggett of Peoria, Ariz.; and her parents. She had a very special bond with “sister” Beth.

As a child, Sue had a paper route and then helped in her father’s insurance office. She worked at Jostens Rings, St. Charles, and First National Bank of Geneva, before becoming a mother. She babysat other kids in her home, sewed, stuffed

In the Quad Cities, she worked for Mel Foster Realtors in Davenport, Iowa, for one year and then worked seven years for Ameriprise Financial adviser Keith Judickas in Moline, until the brain cancer diagnosis.

Police: Man shoots icicles from house

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Authorities last week told a St. Charles Township resident he could not shoot at icicles from his bathroom window.

According to a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report, police responded to the 34W300 block of Fox River Drive in St. Charles Township on Friday morning because a resident saw a neighbor firing a gun out of his window.

The loud gunshots scared her dog, the resident told police.

The man, who lived in the 6N300 block of Essex Avenue, appeared to be shooting at icicles off an overhang at his house – not at anyone, police reported.

The man told police he was indeed shooting his .22-caliber revolver out the bathroom window at icicles. He reportedly claimed he was firing the gun in a safe manner because he was point-

Elburn Scholarship Fund to award grants ELBURN – The Elburn Scholarship Fund will award grants for studies at the college level. ST. CHARLES – St. Charles aldermen are resisting a proposed residential development that would result in the demolition of a city-designated historic landmark.

“I simply don’t support this,” 4th Ward alderman Jo Krieger said of a concept plan for Foxwood Square, the city block bound by South Fifth, Indiana, South Sixth and Ohio avenues.

The property includes the Raymond Judd House, 309 S. Sixth Ave., which the city designated a landmark in 2000.

City documents indicate it was named after the owner who lived there from 1902 to 1931 and is the only true example of Mission architecture in St. Charles.

SGC Builders is under contract to buy the house and the property’s remaining development sites.

On behalf of SGC Builders, Michael Ciampi of Michael Vincent Homes presented a concept plan for Foxwood Square during Monday’s Planning and Development Committee meeting.

Approved plans from 2007 allow the property to have 10 two-family units in five buildings and two condominium units in the Judd House. Since

then, two townhouse units have been built on the block’s northeast corner, according to city documents.

Under the new plan, the townhouse development would be completed to bring the number of residential units to 15, and the Judd House would be demolished.

The revised layout would, Ciampi said, allow for more parking and better access for emergency vehicles and garbage collection.

First Ward alderman Ron Silkaitis said he wanted an independent assessment done on the Judd House. He won’t move forward until he is told the building isn’t worth saving, he said.

“You are aware this is a landmark property,” he said.

His colleagues agreed.

Fourth Ward alderman Jim Martin said he and Krieger insisted Judd House remain when the original developer presented plans for the area.

“It’s inconceivable we could accept anything less at this point,” Martin said.

Because a concept plan was presented, no formal action was taken.

It was simply a chance for the developer to get informal input before proceeding with detailed plans and architectural drawings.

D-304 reopens talks on all-day kindergarten

By CHARLES MENCHACA editorial@kcchronicle.com GENEVA – Geneva School District 304 plans to once again put all-day kindergarten to a vote in February.

The District 304 Board on Monday heard a recommendation from the district’s kindergarten committee to implement a full-day kindergarten program for all students in the grade. Under the program, parents could still have their children participate in a half-day segment of the program, said Andrew Barrett, district director of learning and teaching.

Educators last recommended full-day kindergarten for Geneva in 2008, but board members decided against it because of a lack of funds and space.

Additional school building space is one of many factors that have changed in the last six years – another being the implementation of state common core standards that are specific to kindergarten. Barrett said students will be better poised to meet the standards under a fullday model.

“We believe it’s the best opportunity … to support all of our kids,” Barrett said.

A full-day kindergarten program might cost the district about $1.14 million annually, which is $352,650 more than the cost to maintain its current halfday program, which includes additional services for at-risk students and students with individualized education plans.

The committee also explored the possibility of providing a tuition-based, full-time kindergarten program to parents that wanted more than just half-day programming for children.

Financial estimates were not provided on Monday for such a model because the district is not certain how much demand there might be for such a program.

“I’d rather at least have the option of the tuition model if that was a happy medium that they could find,” Geneva parent Brian Maloney said outside of the meeting. He attended the Monday meeting because his two sons, ages 3 and 5, will be future kindergarteners in the district.

Bob McQuillan, a Geneva TaxFACTS founder, also attended the meeting. He said the district should wait until the state mandates full-day kindergarten.

“I think that by saying the state is going to mandate it, it’s an excuse for them to approve it,” he said.

Residents are invited to attend the next regular school board meeting on Jan. 27 to share their opinion on a fullday kindergarten program. The district will then make a formal recommendation and request board action at its Feb. 10 meeting, Barrett said.

School officials plan to post information about the proposed kindergarten programming on the district website today.

OPINIONS LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The intelligent candidate To the Editor: If I understand Walt Zlotow’s letter concerning Bruce Rauner’s candidacy for governor (Kane County Chronicle; Dec. 27, 2013), he is saying that anyone who is intelligent and has the interests of our state at heart (unlike our current governor) should not run for office because they are wealthy.

Actually, I think most people would want to vote for the candidate who is intelligent, has the well-being of the state at heart, is astute in handling financial matters and wants to establish term limits, thereby eliminating career politicians. He would be the best governor we have had in years!

Tenure decline obscures deeper college problems BLOOMBERG NEWS Like tweed jackets and same-sex dorms, academic tenure is fast becoming a relic of the past.

In 1975, almost half of all teachers at U.S. colleges and universities either had tenure or were in line for tenure; by 2011, that share had fallen to one-fourth. Now, almost two-thirds of instructors are part-time adjuncts – most of them poorly paid – or graduate students.

Reasonable people can disagree on the merits of tenure, which protects professors from summary dismissal.

The more pressing question is whether the system that is replacing it makes sense for students or society as a whole.

Students go to college to

learn, obviously, and society benefits from both the training they receive and the research they help conduct.

The issue, then, is not how to save or end tenure. It’s how to restore teaching to its rightful position in U.S. higher education.

It’s not as if top universities aren’t lavishing attention on their tuition-paying customers. It’s just that a falling share of money is going toward teaching. Spending on student services has been growing almost twice as fast as spending on teaching costs. The share spent on nonacademic functions, such as alumni and public relations, also is growing faster.

This change may not have been conscious, let alone deliberate. It is a consequence of declining state funding,

growing competition for students and a perceived need for a more flexible curriculum.

Like most changes made under pressure, this one is not all good. Administrators may like the ability to fill more positions with cheaper and easy-to-replace nontenured teachers. When fouryear colleges increase their use of part-time instructors, however, graduation rates fall. The reason isn’t clear – though it probably has something to do with their relative lack of office hours (for adjuncts, both offices and hours are often in short supply) and their relative lack of familiarity with the latest research (because they’re less likely to be doing any of that research).

comp-lit/post-doc student is not necessarily a matter of public concern. It is concerning, however, if fewer Americans are seeking careers in one of America’s most successful industries.

All of which brings us back to the question of how to make an academic career more attractive to students, and to make teaching a more important part of an academic career. Tenured faculty members can help by insisting their nontenured colleagues receive equal institutional support – allowing them to participate in department meetings, for example, or get money to attend conferences, or receive support for submitting research grants.

Meanwhile, colleges and universities can adopt new contracts that occupy a mid-

dle ground between tenure for life and annual renewal.

Multiyear contracts, as some schools are offering, are one option.

The federal government also has a role to play. It can discourage overreliance on adjunct professors by making the share of part-timers at any given school a component of the new university scorecard announced by President Barack Obama last year.

Ideally, a generation from now, U.S. colleges and universities will still be the envy of the world, and teaching will remain at their core – both in principle and in practice.

In that sense, what’s less important for schools is to protect the status of individual teachers as much as the profession itself.

T. CHARLES – Smucker’s Uncrustables peanut butter and jelly sandwiches feature images of gold medals on the box, but that’s not the reason St. Charles East sophomore Anthony Rubino eats them.

Forget any would-be osmosis from a company that sponsors the U.S. Olympic team. Uncrustables contain only 210 calories and just enough protein – six grams a snack – to almost be considered nutritious.

Low-cal, light foods are the currency of high school wrestlers such as Rubino, a 113-pounder who spent the past week dining on Uncrustables and other typical lunch table unmentionables in a bid to remain unflappable on the mat.

He’s as riveted by junk food as the next teenager, yet finds himself passing more often than not because his sport is beholden to a scale.

“Your mouth just waters, kind of, thinking about it.

And you’re just so tempted to eat it,” Rubino said, “but you don’t want to, because you know you’re going to be that much over weight.”

In theory, Rubino could gorge on just about anything he wanted given the on-the-go nature of wrestling workouts, plus the additional early morning weight training sessions with his father, Tony, several days a week.

The IHSA even offered an assist last week, as the severe winter weather that canceled classes Jan. 6 and 7 provided a weight allowance of 4 pounds. Athletes receive only a 2-pound growth allowance under normal circumstances.

Once practices resumed Wednesday – on the eve of a stretch that featured three straight days of competition – Rubino was unfazed. He

“With guys like Anthony,” Saints coach Jason Potter said, “there’s no such thing as a day off.”

Sundays come closest.

Rubino confessed to “pigging out” Sunday night after a day that began innocently enough – with a piece of fruit for breakfast and a run through the neighborhood. He later went to, gulp, Panda Express and ordered his favorite, orange chicken.

A meal most of his peers wouldn’t think twice about doesn’t necessarily give Rubino disruptive pause; there are wrestlers, runners and other endurance athletes out there who don’t hold back on soda consumption and keep Skittles in their lockers.

In the long-term, however, Rubino knows empty calories are prone to hold him down.

Regardless of what dinner his parents and older brothers – both former Saints wrestlers – are eating at the family table, he usually opts for rice and a piece or two of fish.

QUICK READ Kevin Druley don’t usually recruit Illinoisans during Bishop’s recent campus visit. The school hasn’t had the best luck luring recruits from far out of state, and its most recent Illinois product didn’t stay long.

The Bishops eliminated any potential trepidation by marketing Brandon, a wide receiver, straight to Minnesota-Duluth, which contacted Bishop on Dec. 21, the same day he sent the video. The school offered a scholarship

at the end of Bishop’s visit this past weekend.

“It was kind of like fate because they had been recruiting kids since junior Brandon year and then Bishop they just heard about me and call me in,” Bishop said.

Bishop, also a track athlete at Kaneland, will return to the Knights Anthony lineup this Thielk spring and could expand on his usual repertoire of sprints.

He’s happy to be back in full health after suffering a concussion – along with a strained neck and back – near the end of the Knights’ first-round Class 5A playoff victory against Hampshire in November.

Bishop sat out Kaneland’s Round 2 loss at Joliet Catholic.

“I’m 100 precent and I’m ready to go out and play football,” Bishop said.

Thielk led Class 6A state champion Batavia with 107 tackles, including 14 for a loss. His standout season also included 8½ sacks, two fumble recoveries and three interceptions. Thielk picked off passes in the state semifinals and the state championship game.

Minnesota State is also among the schools all-state Batavia senior running back Anthony Scaccia is considering, along with Butler, Drake and Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Rubino enjoyed a rare breather as wrestlers from the Saints’ freshman and sophomore teams toiled for a few more drills Wednesday afternoon. Even as he sat along the wall, however, Rubino lent imagery to his ultimate goal.

A listing of the Saints’ all-time state champions is presented chronologically in a two-tiered panel display along the far wall. The top row includes portraits of Potter and younger brother Christopher, also a Saints assistant, who both won a pair of titles at 171 in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Wrestling binds the brothers just as much as it has bruised them. Last season, Brandon lost out on what his dad called “puppy love” when a college girlfriend fumed over his decision to watch

Three years earlier, Anthony’s heart pounded with possibility when he watched Brandon from a similar perch at the University of Illinois’ Assembly Hall.

“It’s pretty amazing. I still think about it all the time, you know. I want him to feel that experience,” Brandon Rubino said. “Being in the tunnel with everyone. The state champs.

It was pretty wild. Pretty wild.

But yeah, I never thought it would inspire him like it did.

Trying to help him out as much as I can.”

Anthony Rubino, 24-4 so far this season after qualifying for sectionals as a freshman, finishes his extra work with sprints. He has built his stamina from two to seven minutes, and soon will begin decelerating from seven to two as next month’s state series approaches.

At Saturday’s Batavia quad, he encountered one wrestler who likely will present a state series roadblock. West Aurora junior Carlos Jacquez defeated Rubino, 7-2, scoring a late takedown to provide the final margin.

Jacquez earned his first two takedowns when Rubino was on the verge of scoring, offering optimism as the season approaches its stretch run.

“I like where he’s at right now. He’s in there. I think that’s a kid he can beat to get on the podium downstate,” Potter said. “That’s one of the kids we have to beat in order to get that done. If we were nowhere near scoring on him, that could be frustrating, but we’re eyelashes away from getting those takedowns.”

Rubino also defeated Batavia’s Michael Doranski and accepted a forfeit against Schaumburg. Later that night, he and several teammates went bowling at Bowling Green in West Chicago, one of a handful of off-the-mat activities the Saints regularly use to unwind.

“It’s really important knowing pretty much every guy and actually being friends with them, hanging out with them,” Rubino said.

Besides, it usually requires a group effort to resist snack bar fare.

Big improvement for big man At 6-foot-9, Burlington Central senior Duncan Ozburn is hard to miss on the basketball floor.

This year, Ozburn is being noticed more and more for the right reasons.

Ozburn is among the area’s most improved players, as Kaneland found out first-hand Saturday in the Rockets’ 67-43 win.

Ozburn had 10 points and eight rebounds against the Knights, converting 5 of his 6 field-goal attempts.

“He’s gotten so much better from this time last year,” Kaneland coach Brian Johnson said of Ozburn. “He has improved immensely. I haven’t seen improvement out of a kid like that at the schools I’ve been. In that year span, he’s gotten a lot better. He’s hard to guard.”

The Rockets have plenty of scoring options, meaning they don’t have to force-feed it into Ozburn possession after possession. Four Central players scored in double figures in the Kaneland win.

Still, Rockets coach Brett Porto said the team intends to consistently keep the 210-pound Ozburn included in the offense.

“We like getting him touches because it just dictates problems,” Porto said.

“You’ve got to double team, you’ve got to front him or play behind. He does a great job of reading defenses, finding cutters, finding the open shots. And then he’s done a really nice job this year to get his post game up, where he’s got some nice moves. He puts a lot of pressure on defenses.”

Miller back in mix St. Charles North becomes all the more dangerous with one of its top athletes back in the lineup.

was nonetheless eager to insert the 6-3 Miller back into the starting lineup. A three-sport athlete, Miller also was the starting quarterback on North’s football team and is a standout jumper in track and field.

“His athleticism, his length, his ability to get on the boards and run the floor really makes us better,” Poulin said.

The development of players such as Tyler DeMoss and John Davern in Miller’s absence should bolster the North Stars’ depth for the stretch run.

“We’ll be better as [Miller] shakes some of the rust off and gets comfortable out there,” Poulin said.

Raging River The Essig Report, which ranks the 339 teams that play in Class 3A and Class 4A conferences in Illinois, has four UEC River teams ranked among the top 45: Larkin (11), St. Charles North (40), St. Charles East (42) and Geneva (45).

North’s strength of schedule – buoyed by its participation in the Ron Johnson Thanksgiving Tournament and the Pontiac Holiday Tournament, in addition to the UEC River’s strong rankings – is ranked 12th in the state.

I think floor is my best event and it’s all about the landings and staying under control.”

Ginsberg also placed in all four events for Geneva, tying for first in the vault (9.4), placing second in the bars (9.4) and second on the floor (9.45) while setting a school record on the beam with a 9.7.

“I think a 9.5 was my high earlier in the season; I was surprised but the judge told me she was really impressed,” Ginsberg said. “It’s exciting especially as a freshman to see where we can go. Getting high scores and breaking school records is just boosting our confidence.”

GENEVA – Senior night at the Mack Olson Gymnasium proved to be not just a celebration of seniors for the Geneva girls gymnastics team.

Coming off a win Saturday at the Lincoln-Way East Invitational with a year-best mark of 146.15, the Vikings team bested that mark Monday by outdueling the St. Charles co-op, 146.2142.5.

Leading the charge for the Vikings were seniors Dominique Brognia and Claire Scatterday, along with freshman standout Claire Ginsberg.

Brognia capped the win for the Vikings with a 9.45 in floor while Ginsberg placed second with a 9.35.

The senior-freshman trio placed in all four events to help Geneva post its best score of the season, something not lost on coach Kim Hostman.

“I’m really happy – I wanted us to hit a 146 tonight regardless of the outcome, and we just try to focus on us,” Hostman said. “We just have to keep progressing on and improving our score. The girls really try to focus on our goals each week and so far our accomplishments have been amazing.”

St. Charles had a strong start to the event as Rachel Dugan placed first in the bars with a 9.55. Besides a strong showing in the vault that saw Dugan tie Ginsberg for first and Cathryn Gotlund take

third, St. Charles was nearly shut out off the top spots with just a Sidney Copeland third place in the floor, along with Dugan’s first in the bars.

“We have a lot of girls who are just getting back from injuries and are getting back in the lineup, so we’re feeling pretty strong,” Dugan said. “I was definitely really nervous for bars; that was the one event coming in that I was most nervous for. Getting that out of the way first, but most importantly hitting it, that was big for me.”

The turning point in the meet came in the second rotation as Geneva placed Ginsberg (9.7), Brognia (9.45) and Scatterday (9.25) atop the scoring.

Meanwhile, only Copeland (9.2) broke the 9.0 mark as three St. Charles competitors fell off the beam during their routines. That left St. Charles coach Amy Lill wanting more.

“I’m a little pleased with tonight but we have a lot to work on,” Lill said. “I’m very pleased with all of my girls tonight. Next week we don’t have any meets which will be really nice so we can work on some things and get ready to go into conference.”

Parks has been reliable in the middle of the Knight’s lineup, including a win by fall against Geneva and a pair of victories at the Richmond-Burton quadrangular.

A high-scoring guard, Fruendt has been a consistent force for the Bulldogs throughout the season, including a 37-point outburst against Proviso East at a tournament in Oswego.

Smith helped South Elgin to a 6-3 start to the season, averaging 20.4 points per game during that span. He shot 39 percent from 3-point land and chipped in 5.8 rebounds per game.

Navigato is averaging 20.5 points per game and 7 rebounds. He was the MVP of the East Aurora Holiday Tournament and made the game-winning shot versus Kaneland to win at the United Center.

“Your calves are burning, your thighs are burning,” said Hawks forward Kris Versteeg, a seven-year NHL veteran. “But it’s more in your forearms.”

The Hawks work on all sorts of drills during practice, but few are as fun to watch as the rapid-fire drill. A player steps into the slot, readies his stick, and fires dozens of shots into an empty net as assistant coach Jamie Kompon continues to feed passes.

The play of senior guard Jake Ludwig gave the North Stars some added separation from their opponents early in the second half. Ludwig was involved in the first four scoring plays for North in the third quarter, sparking the North Stars’ 75-64 Upstate Eight Conference crossover win.

Ludwig added three baskets of his own, with an assist to teammate Alec Goetz as well. Goetz finished with 30 points for the contest to finish as the game’s high scorer.

The strong start to the second half gave North the momentum it needed to cap off a 2-0 weekend after winning Friday at Geneva.

“I wouldn’t trade [Goetz and Ludwig] for any other backcourt,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “They work well together and they do a great job of taking what the defense gives them.”

Heading into the fourth quarter, the North Stars (9-5) had their lead built up to 49-40, with the lead getting as large as 14 at one point early in the fourth.

But with the 3-point shooting ability of East Aurora (4-11), the Tomcats remained in the hunt.

East Aurora made six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter alone, with three of those coming from Kejuan Davis (24 points).

Fortunately for St. Charles North, the North Stars always had an answer on the offensive end to counter the Tomcats’ 3-point shooting, most notably coming from the free throw line.

The North Stars shot 17 of 19 from the line in the fourth quarter, led by Goetz, who was a perfect 10 for 10, to help North ice the game in the closing minutes.

“We really stressed free throw shooting during practice because early in the season our free throw percentage really wasn’t very good, but we worked on it a lot and now we’re pretty good,” Goetz said.

Jack Callaghan (15) and Ludwig (12) also were in double figures scoring for North.

It’s hard to say exactly when the drill will pay off.

Maybe the rapid-fire moment will arrive today – this is not a test – during the Hawks’ game against the Colorado Avalanche, a young team with a promising future. Or maybe a Hawks shooter will accept a pass and fire a shot that could decide the outcome

Friday against the Anaheim Ducks or Sunday against the Boston Bruins, two legitimate obstacles to the Hawks’ goal of back-to-back championships.

Hawks coach Joel Quenneville would love to see such a moment.

The Hawks remain atop the Western Conference’s Central Division at 30-810, but they had gone winless in four out of five games before bouncing back Sunday against Edmonton.

“The next three games are all good tests for us,” Quenneville said. “We want to make sure we have a real good homestand here [that] can put us back in a better spot.”

If shooters are in the right spot, the Hawks could be in a better spot.

Thibs vs. GarPax: Loser is Bulls Someday, Tom Thibodeau will simply vanish from Chicago. The only thing left will be the last, faint echo of his ragged voice as he heads to his next job.

No goodbyes. No farewell news conference. No full-page ad in the local newspapers thanking fans.

That’s how I expect it to end. Badly? Oh, absolutely. And the Bulls will be the worse for it.

What I’m laying out here goes well beyond the saying that every coach is hired to be fired. No NBA coach stays forever. We all know that.

But there has been too much rancor between Thibodeau and the Bulls’ front office over the past few years, too many whispers about his future and too many clenched jaws around the team to think he’s going to make it through anywhere close to the four years on his contract. He’s in the first year of an extension he agreed to in October 2012.

The latest rumor might seem like a wild one, but my guess is that it didn’t materialize out of thin air.

“There are rumblings around the

VIEWS Rick Morrissey Chicago Bulls’ offices these days that Tom Thibodeau already has a deal in place to coach the Knicks next season,” the New York Daily News’ Mitch Lawrence wrote recently.

How’s that for a declarative sentence? But experience tells us that reports like these have roots somewhere. Between the offseason firing of assistant Ron Adams against Thibodeau’s wishes to the recent trade of Thibs’ favorite player, Luol Deng, you have to wonder when the coach is going to say he has had enough.

It’s hard to believe that the Knicks would risk a hefty tampering fine for negotiating with Thibodeau. But it’s not hard to believe Thibs has let other people know his frustration in dealing with Bulls vice president John Paxson and general manager Gar Forman.

And it’s not hard to believe GarPax is sick of Thibodeau.

It doesn’t have to end badly, of course. The two sides could find a mediator or a marriage counselor who can convince them not to blow a good thing. But it sure seems to be headed down a one-way street.

I don’t happen to believe that Bulls management wants the team to tank the season in order to get a better lottery pick. The best revenge for Thibodeau has always been winning, and this is no different. Going into Monday’s game against the Wizards, the Bulls had won five straight games, three straight since they traded Deng to Cleveland. No Deng or Derrick Rose? No problem.

Short of management trading Joakim Noah, the Bulls are going to make the playoffs in the weak Eastern Conference, which is a contest to choose the tallest Chihuahua.

Wait, they wouldn’t trade Noah to spite Thibodeau, would they?

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Canes were used not only to aid in walking, but also as part of European and American fashionable dress in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many canes had an extra function, too. Some held swords, guns, flasks, telescopes, cameras, fans, seats, perfume, poison, drugs or hidden papers. Many had silver, gold or jeweled handles or even handles that were modeled heads of presidential candidates. Elegant but fragile handles were made of porcelain. In the late 19th century, the famous Meissen porcelain factory in Germany made elaborate cane handles that look like small figurines. They were shaped to be easy to hold and carried, but would break if dropped or hit. Few of these cane handles have survived, and they often are sold without the cane shaft. A three-quarter figure of a woman extending into a curved cane handle was auctioned by Cowan’s Auctions of Cincinnati in October 2013.

The handle, with Meissen’s blue crossed-swords mark inside, sold for $800. *** Q: I own an old wooden desk with a flip-down top hiding several pigeonholes. A paper sticker on the back reads “Maddox Tables.” Please tell me something about the maker and the desk’s value.

A: Maddox Table Co. was founded in Jamestown, N.Y., in 1898 by English immigrant William Maddox. He had invented

several furniture-making and finishing machines before he started his own company. The company made tables, desks, secretaries and other case furniture. The company was sold in 1919 and again in 1978. It closed in the mid-1980s. Your desk, if in good condition, is worth $400 or so. ** * Q: I have an 8-by-10-inch painting by A.E. Hayes. I have been told that it’s an example of “tin foil art.” It’s in a very old frame and the back is sealed with old tape. If I remove the tape, I’m likely to ruin the painting. Can you tell me how this painting was done?

A: Your painting is a piece of “tinsel art,” which is a form of reverse-painting on glass. It was popular from about 1850 to 1890. Most tinsel paintings were of flowers. The painting was done in reverse order. Flowers or other foreground details were painted on the glass first and then the background was painted. Pieces of crumpled foil were added to unpainted parts of the picture. Then the picture was framed with the clear glass in front, the foil in the back.

The picture was backed with cloth or paper and sealed with a piece of cardboard or thin wood. When the painting was hung, the foil glimmered in the glow of candlelight or gas light.

Most tinsel pictures were done by young women for their own homes. Perhaps A.E. Hayes was one of these women. Good early tinsel paintings sell for $100 to $500, depending on size, subject and condition.

This porcelain cane handle must have been used carefully to remain unbroken for over 100 years. The woman figure was made by the Meissen porcelain factory of Germany. It sold for $800 at an October 2013 Cowan’s auction in Cincinnati.

*** Q: I inherited an old cider press from my uncle. Stenciling on it reads, “The Higganum Mfg. Corporation Manufacturers, Higganum, Conn., USA.” It still works. We made cider with it the other day. Can you tell me anything about its history and value?

A: Higganum Manufacturing Co. was founded by brothers George and Thomas Clark in 1867. The company made cider mills, wine presses, lard presses, wagon jacks and agricultural equipment. It was incorporated by about 1880. In 1892, the company was renamed Clark Cutaway Harrow, after its most successful product. Several of the factory buildings burned down in 1914, but the company continued to operate for several more years. The rest of the property was sold in 1942. Your cider press was probably made in about 1880, before the company name was changed. Value: About $100.

violin he said was very valuable because it was a genuine “Mittenwald.” Stamped inside the instrument it reads, “Joan Carol Kloz, in Mittenwald, An. 1788.” I searched the Internet and found that Johann Carol Klotz (17091769) was a violin maker in Mittenwald. However, the names are spelled differently on my violin and the date doesn’t fit.

A: Millions of violins supposedly made by famous German makers are fakes made in the early 1900s. Authentic old violins are very rare. Several members of the Klotz family made violins in Mittenwald, which has been known for its violin makers since the late 17th century.

The date on your violin is a problem since Joan (Johann) died in 1769. To find out if your violin is authentic, first show it to a professional violinist and ask if it appears to be a fine old violin.

Then have a reputable musical instrument dealer or appraiser look at it. You will have to pay for an appraisal, but authentic old violins made by members of the Klotz family are rare and sell for thousands of dollars.

The words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. helped to change the world. His words still inspire people today. He was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. His father was the minister of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, as was his father before him. Because Martin and his father had the same name, the family called him M.L.

When M.L. was young, he played with all the children who lived in his Atlanta neighborhood.

But when they reached school age, the white children went to a school for white children only, and M.L. was sent to a school for black children.

After the first day of school, M.L. and his white friends were never allowed to play together again.

At the Golden Globes, sloppy gets it done

By HANK STUEVER The Washington Post Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards show was pretty much everything viewers want the Golden Globes to be – from its humorous informalities down to some of the inexplicable winners (we’ll get to Jacqueline Bisset in a sec) of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s nearly meaningless film and television awards.

Nobody had an acceptance speech ready. Nobody could get to the stage in a timely manner. The red carpet was accidentally soaked before the show in dirty drain water. Men showed up with fancier hairdos than the women. The Breathalyzer results were just north of handcuffable. This is all we ever really ask for from any awards show – something to look at and laugh off.

Big winners included “American Hustle” (for best comedy or musical film and for actresses Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence); AMC’s “Breaking Bad” (for best TV drama and for lead actor Bryan Cranston); and Fox’s comedy “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (for best TV comedy and lead actor Andy Samberg).

“Twelve Years a Slave” won best film in the drama category; Cate Blanchett won best actress (drama) for her work in “Blue Jasmine”; Matthew McConaughey won best actor (drama) for “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler delivered even better co-hosting work than they did last year; the great jab of the evening came in their opening monologue when Fey, referring to the astronauts-in-peril movie “Gravity,” said, “George Clooney would rather float away and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.”

And Poehler (who won her own Golden Globe, for her starring role in NBC’s “Parks and Recreation”) did a hilarious bit as “Randy,” Fey’s “illegitimate son” forced to don a tuxedo and serve alongside Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick’s daughter as “Mr. Golden Globes.”

The evening’s oddest moment came barely 15 minutes in, when Bisset won a best actress award for Starz’s little-noticed broadcast of the British Jazz Age miniseries “Dancing on the Edge.” It was the first of the evening’s bizarre pauses, while the 69-year-old actress

At a loss for words, Bisset soon found some, reaching back across decades of apparent show-biz hurt and neglect, to the chagrin of the person at the control board tasked with muting out bad words. (And missed bleeping out the nefarious S-word.)

Bisset’s goofiness seemed to set a tone – say what you want, do what you want – it’s the Golden Globes and nobody really cares and the award choices might not make conventional sense. Tremble and sputter your way through it. Pause. (Pause again. Pause yet again.) Climb over and past those tightly packed tables to get to the stage.

Make fun of the HFPA in funny, fake foreign accents. Ignore the orchestra cue midway through your incomprehensible acceptance speech and then really ignore the orchestra cue.

Emma Thompson walked out in stocking feet to present the best screenplay award (Spike Jonze won it for “Her”) and pointed to the red-soled bottoms of the Christian Louboutin heels in her hand: “This is my blood,” she faux-complained.

The only place the Golden Globes show ever stumbles (besides those years when the host bombs) is when some of its participants and recipients attempt to momentarily steer it in a

serious direction, confusing it with fancier events: Steve Coogan brought the real “Philomena” onstage to briefly remind us of the Irish women who were forced to give up their children for adoption; U2’s Bono accepted the award for best original song (from the movie “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”) and hectored us about still not having seen it.

One of the night’s more memorable moments was serious and touching, as Diane Keaton accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her lifelong (and awards-show averse) friend Woody Allen. She took the opportunity to salute how he writes characters for women.

“Woody’s women [characters] can’t be compartmentalized,” she said. “They are in fact the hallmark of Woody’s work, but what’s even more remarkable is absolutely nothing links these unforgettable characters — except the fact that they came from Woody’s mind. And there you have it.”

Which is about all the genuine sentimentality a decent Golden Globes telecast can bear.

Soon enough, the Golden Globe Awards show did something it does every year, something I love most in any awards show: It not only ended on time; it also ended one minute early.

When it comes to Golden Globes, sloppy gets it done.

Light therapy can help overcome seasonal affective disorder Dear Doctor K: I have seasonal affective disorder so I dread the approach of winter. What can I do?

Dear Reader: Here in Boston, it can get dark before 4:30 in the afternoon. For some people, the shorter days of this time of year bring on seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also known as winter depression. People with SAD tend to develop symptoms every year. They start gradually in late autumn and build up during the winter months. For many, relief may not come until the longer days of spring.

Like other forms of depression, SAD produces sadness, lethargy and fatigue, loss of interest in people and activities, impaired concentration and irritability.

SAD also leads to oversleeping and overeating. (Most other forms of depression produce insomnia and weight loss.)

Only one drug, bupropion (Wellbutrin), is approved for SAD. But selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and other antidepressants are also effective.

Another treatment, known as light therapy, is at least as effective for treating SAD as antidepressants. Light therapy involves sitting close to a fluorescent light

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff box for 30 minutes each day. The light is much more intense than the light produced by an ordinary light bulb. Proper light boxes provide 10,000 lux. (The “lux” is a measure of light intensity. By way of comparison, indoor light is about 100 lux. A bright sunny day is 50,000 lux or more.)

Bright white light acts on cells in the eye’s retina. The retina connects to a part of the brain that helps control circadian rhythms of sleep and wakefulness. Scientists believe these rhythms may become disrupted in SAD. Light treatment is relatively safe and side effects are uncommon. Some people become irritable, develop headaches or their eyes are bothered by the brightness of the light box. Reducing the time of each light box session, or sitting somewhat farther away from the box, can often correct that problem.

If light therapy is done in the later part of the day, it can cause insomnia in some people when they go to bed several hours later.

The obvious way of dealing with this problem is moving light therapy to earlier in the day.

Some people with SAD have also suffered from bipolar disorder earlier in their lives. There is some evidence that light therapy may provoke recurrent attacks of bipolar disorder, particularly the manic (hyperactive) phase of the illness.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not test, approve or regulate light box devices. Before buying a light box, ask which wavelengths it emits, to avoid any that may be harmful. For example, blue light may be more effective for SAD than full-spectrum white light. Theoretically, certain wavelengths of blue light might damage the retina. However, I’m not aware of any evidence that this occurs with light box therapy.

Finally, a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a good diet and a strong social network, is also likely to help you cope with SAD.

Dr. Wallace: I’m 18, and my boyfriend is 20. He is kind, considerate, compassionate and just a wonderful human being.

I love him and love to think that someday he will be my husband and the father of our children. We have been together for over a year.

The only concern I have, and it’s a huge concern, is that he drinks too much. His father is an alcoholic, and I believe my boyfriend is, too.

I’ve done everything I can think of to get him to lay off alcohol, but nothing has been effective. I’ve never seen my boyfriend drunk, but I’ve seen him tipsy many, many times.

To make matters worse, he has been known to drive after he has been drinking.

When I bring up the subject, he either says, “I don’t want to talk about it,” or “I can handle my alcohol.

The easy way out for me is to tell this guy it’s either alcohol or me, and then walk away when he chooses alcohol – because he would.

But I just can’t do that. I love and care for him much more than I should.

I’m trying my very best to get him to stop drinking, or at least to stop driving after drinking.

If that happened, then we might have a life together.

I’m going to keep trying to help him until I conclude that

Someone who is an alcoholic is an alcoholic for life.

There is no cure for alcoholism. But an alcoholic can, and many do, live alcohol-free lives. If that ever becomes your boyfriend’s wish, he should get involved with Alcoholics Anonymous.

This wonderful organization can assist him in living a sober life.

Since you love this guy, you might find it difficult to remove him from your life. If that’s the case, don’t allow him to convince you that he can “control” his drinking pattern by himself, because he won’t.

Don’t marry him until you are 100 percent positive that he is an alcoholic who has firmly decided to live an “alcohol-free life” forever because he loves you more than he loves alcohol.

Please remember that being married to a “drinking alcoholic” guarantees that your life will be one filled with tears, heartache, sorrow and misery.

This deal has instructive points for both sides. The auction went as given. Note, in particular, East’s pass. Yes, West might have had a three-suiter with a heart void, and a contract of four spades would have either made or been a cheap save when four hearts doubled was making.

But it is the percentage action to pass when balanced. It is usually easier to win four tricks than 10.

West led the spade ace: five, two, three. What happened after that?

Since East’s low card denied the spade queen, West anticipated that South had begun with queen-doubleton. So, West could see four probable tricks. However, his partner rated to have one of the minor-suit kings – but which one?

When West cashed the spade king, East made a suit-preference signal. Because he held the diamond king, he dropped his spade eight. (With the club king, East would have followed with his four.)

Now West led a low diamond.

East won with his king and shifted to the club jack. The defenders took two tricks there. South, down to eight trumps, ruffed the next play and cashed the heart ace to drop the king and get out for down two.

Did you notice South’s error?

He should have played his spade queen at trick one. Then it would have been dangerous for West to continue with the spade king, lest South ruff, cash the heart ace, get to dummy with the heart queen, and discard two losers on the spade jack and nine.

There were a surprising 11 five-putts on the PGA tour in 2013.
