Winter farmers market opens indoors at Gaetano’s Batavia

cmenchaca@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Interest in Batavia’s first winter farmers market was so strong that customers showed up about 30 minutes before the market’s 9 a.m. opening Saturday, its organizers said.

“We told people to go to Limestone Coffee and Tea ... and come back,” said Joi Cuartero, Batavia MainStreet executive director. “Limestone will be here, too, next week.”

Cuartero said about 90 people came to the first weekend of the Batavia winter farmers market, which was inside Gaetano’s Batavia, 15 E. Wilson St., Batavia. The winter market will be every Saturday through May 23 at the restaurant.

The market’s first-day selection included baked goods, meats, eggs, honey and more from 10 vendors.

Anne Veague and her husband, Rick, bought frozen chicken from Ferndell Farms and eggs from Burgin Farms at the market. The Batavia residents are frequent attendees of the city’s outdoor farmers market on River Street.

“I’m really glad they are doing this,” said Veague, co-founder of the monthly Waterline Writers event held at Water Street Studios in Batavia. “It’s nice to know we don’t have to stock up on things at the end of the fall if [the market] is going to continue.”

Gaetano and Wendy Di Benedetto, the executive chef and owner of Gaetano’s Batavia, respectively, offered Cuartero space for the market in the restaurant, which is not open in the morning when the market is held.

Gaetano DiBenedetto said he and his wife wanted to support the artisans and also Cuartero, who helped with some of the logistics in getting the restaurant open in Batavia. He is considering creating dishes with some of the farmers market products, and he and Cuartero will explore maximizing the space to see if additional vendors can join.

“Now the idea is to help them out even more,” Gaetano DiBenedetto said.

“The summer market is super successful,” Riesterer said. “The community embraces it, and makes its artisans feel welcome.”

Riesterer will sell more products in a forthcoming boutique and full-service flower shop called the Eclectic Garden. The business is preparing to open sometime in February at 323 Walnut St. in St. Charles.

Riesterer was one of the vendors who supported the idea of a winter farmers market in Batavia. Cuartero said the idea had been discussed for some time, but finding a location wasn’t easy.

St. Charles aldermen back business incentive program

By CHARLES MENCHACA cmenchaca@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles City Council committee Monday gave their support for a program aimed to help attract and partially support downtown businesses.

The Planning and Development Committee voted, 8-0, in favor of having staff prepare a resolution to authorize

the Downtown Business Economic Incentive Program.

Alderman Ed Bessner, of the 5th Ward, did not vote because he was acting as committee chairman in place of 1st Ward Alderman Dan Stellato, who was absent Monday. The proposed program will reimburse qualifying applicants on a 50/50 basis with an initial maximum of $10,000 for various eligible improvements, said Matthew

O’Rourke, the city’s economic development division manager.

The improvements can include installation of fire sprinklers and alarms, updating old plumbing and electric systems to comply with city codes and updating spaces to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, O’Rourke wrote in his staff report about the proposed program.

Properties that would be part of the program have to be within Downtown Special Service Area-1B, which includes a span of blocks closest to the Fox River on the east and west sides of Downtown St. Charles.

Additional awards of up to $15,000 would have to be approved by the City Council. Funding for the program could begin at $100,000 from the city’s general fund during

its 2015-16 fiscal year starting May 1, said Rita Tungare, the city’s director of community and economic development.

Alderman Ron Silkaitis, of the 1st Ward, asked whether the program could possibly be extended to bars and taverns so they are not excluded. City staff plans to take the committee’s comments and suggestions into consideration when drafting the resolution for the program.

Challenged Kaneland candidates Third tier parking deck to remain on April election ballot on schedule despite cold GENEVA – The three Kaneland School District 302 Board hopefuls whose candidacy for the April 7 election had been challenged will remain on the ballot, after rulings Monday by the Kane County Electoral Board.

Jerry Elliott and Dan Nagel of Sugar Grove Township, and incumbent Tony Valente of Sugar Grove, will remain on the ballot.

The three-member Electoral Board voted unanimously in a series of 12 hearings at the Kane County Clerk’s office in Geneva, finding in each case that neither the Illinois Election Code, nor the Illinois School Code, required candidates to list the township in which they reside on the nominating petitions.

Objectors Gale Pavlak and Lynn McHenry of Elburn and Peter Lopatin and Teresa Witt of Sugar Grove all cited Valente, Nagel and Elliott’s lack of citing their townships, as well as using the wrong form.

Pavlak, Lopatin and Witt are current school board members seeking re-election.

ences teacher at Kaneland High School.

In overruling their objections, the Electoral Board found that each candidate had substantially complied with requirements in listing their names, addresses and offices they were seeking.

After about half the decisions were voted on, Pavlak said she had expected the rulings to go as they did.

“There are no congratulations to be offered to anyone here because there wasn’t anything personal,” Pavlak stated in written comments she distributed.

“It’s procedural, and we’re passionate about doing things properly, with transparency. There are no personal winners and losers in making a reasonable objection. The integrity of the election is what is important,” according to Pavlak’s

statement.

Lopatin said if he had gone through all the nominating petitions of candidate Ryan Kerry of Elburn, he would have included him in his objection.

Lopatin said Kerry used the right form for several nominating petitions and he did not realize Kerry used the wrong one in others.

Elliott criticized the objectors as wasting taxpayers’ time and money to conduct hours of hearings.

In all, eight candidates are seeking four seats on the board, including Pamela Voorhees of Maple Park.

The Electoral Board was made up of Suzanne Fahnestock, director of elections for the clerk; Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon; and Karin Herwick, chief deputy for Circuit Clerk Thomas Hartwell.

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Last week’s low temperatures stopped work on the third tier of the commuter parking deck, but the project will continue as planned, Geneva officials said.

Public Works Director Richard Babica said work crews lost time all last week because of extreme weather conditions, but believes they will be able to finish by the last week of January.

“We still have some wiggle room. … With a little cooperation from Mother Nature,” Babica said.

“I did receive an email from Matt Walsh reassuring me we would be parking cars Feb. 1,” City Administrator Mary McKittrick said at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting.

Walsh Construction Company is building the third tier

of the Third Street parking deck near the Metra commuter station at 328 Crescent Place.

Aldermen voted to recommend paying Walsh an additional $5,200 to install two more closed circuit TV cameras on the new ramp to the third deck.

Staff determined the new ramp created a blind spot on the second deck, thus requiring two additional cameras for a total of eight to be installed.

All levels of the parking deck are equipped with cameras to provide site security, officials said.

In a special City Council meeting following the Committee of the Whole, aldermen took final action to add the additional funds to Walsh’s contract, making it $4.6 million.

The parking deck has been closed since last summer to allow for the construction.

Christ Community Church celebrates 30 years On the Web

The message “I [heart] my church” was emblazoned on the weekend’s programs, on T-shirts and on an interactive timeline noting milestones in its 30-year history – an anniversary celebrated at the weekend services.

“Happy anniversary,” senior pastor Jim Nicodem said to those at the 11 a.m.

Sunday service in St. Charles Township. “We’re glad you’re here.”

What began with six families in 1984 has evolved from holding services in movie theaters and baptisms at a backyard pool to a church community with four campuses in multiple counties.

According to its most recent annual report, the attendance at outreach services – including Wow Weekends, Christmas and Easter – totaled 34,019 for 2013-14.

Local leaders, including St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina, and former Wow Weekend speakers, such as Nik Wallenda, offered congratulations in video messages.

Nicodem, who has been with the church from the beginning, said the founders

aimed to create a welcoming place for explorers – those who hadn’t yet committed their lives to Christ.

“If that’s you … you are warmly welcomed here,” he said.

bers Michelle and Jeremy Mejdrich said they became involved with Christ Community Church after taking their daughters to a VeggieTales show. Jeremy Mejdrich said he was impressed by the friendly, nonpressure atmo-

sphere and liked how the messages were relevant and easy to apply to their lives.

“God has used this church to bring his word to us in a relevant and real way,” he said.

Occasionally, Nicodem said, he will hear that some churchgoers believe the church puts too much emphasis on explorers and neglects mature Christ followers. Recapping last year’s topics, which included homosexuality, Nicodem asked the audience if that sounded like Christianity 101.

“We are far from catering strictly to explorers,” he said.

In closing, Nicodem suggested that Christ Community Church make country singer Toby Keith’s song “I Love This Bar” into its unofficial theme song. But, he said, the lyrics would substitute “church” for “bar.”

“I love my church,” Nicodem said. “This is a great place to be.”

Rauner: ‘We are in the midst of a government financial crisis’

By TIM JONES and ELIZABETH CAMPBELL Bloomberg News Bruce Rauner is a turnaround specialist who built his reputation taking over struggling companies and making them profitable. Now he’s tasked with fixing the finances of Illinois.

A Republican and firsttime public officeholder, Rauner took over Monday as governor of the state with the worst-funded pension system and the lowest credit rating among its peers, and more financial stress lies ahead.

Some government services, such as the corrections department, might run out of cash as soon as next month because lawmakers passed a 2015 budget containing a $2 billion revenue hole.

A $6.5 billion pile of unpaid

bills is projected to multiply, exceeding $21 billion in three years, according to the state’s budget office. That would be about 60 percent of the annual operating budget. There’s also the matter of a $111 billion pension deficit that’s squeezing other spending priorities.

“We are in the midst of a government financial crisis that has been building for decades,” Rauner said during his inaugural address in Springfield. “Its roots lie in bad decisions, bad practices, and bad management by state government. It is not a partisan creation. It is a truly bipartisan one.”

Rauner received a warm welcome from U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Winfield.

Hultgren issued a statement in which he stated he would “look forward to our brighter

future and offer Mr. Rauner my best wishes as he begins his term.”

“Our state has a magnificent history, an abundance of resources, and people who work hard and play by the rules,” Hultgren stated in the release. “It is our responsibility as their representatives in state and national government to serve them humbly, and help them pursue better opportunities for their families and communities. It’s time to put Illinois back on solid fiscal footing and restore its credibility among its neighbors.”

Rauner’s inauguration comes four years after the Democratic-controlled legislature approved income-tax increases intended to avert fiscal insolvency. Little has changed in Illinois, which has had its credit downgraded a

combined seven times since June 2010. The higher levies expired Jan. 1, and the specter of financial chaos that prompted the 2011 tax action has returned.

Rauner’s speech was short on specifics. He promised steps, including directing every state agency to freeze non-essential spending and to report on contracts signed since Nov. 1.

He comes to office after more than three decades in the private-equity business, retiring in 2012 as chairman of Chicago-based GTCR LLC, which invested more than $10 billion in about 200 companies.

As chief executive of the fifth most-populous state, he won’t have the luxury of time.

Investors and credit-rating companies are waiting for Rauner, the first Republican

chief executive elected in 16 years in Illinois, to produce a plan to restore financial stability. Campaign promises will clash with fiscal and political reality – he’ll be working with veto-proof Democratic legislative majorities.

“Illinois is in a death spiral and in desperate need of a turnaround,” Rauner said in an emailed statement on Friday.

A report his transition team released that day recommends spending cuts and tax changes as part of a plan to sort out the fiscal mess.

This year’s budget doesn’t have enough money to cover expenses through June 30 because lawmakers facing re-election two months ago didn’t extend the expiring tax increases, which would’ve generated about $5 billion of revenue next fiscal year.

closed on the properties last week and that Colburn did not want to say how much he paid for the properties. Adams said Colburn opened Preservation Bread & Wine about four years ago.

According to land records, 511-513 S. Third St., was owned

by Janet McCormick of St. Charles and Margaret McDonnell of Batavia.

“He’s been wanting to own it for a while,” Adams said of the building where his business was a tenant. “Serendipitously, the opportunity came.

And it did come with the Smuzi [Juice Bar] building. Preservation Bread & Wine is going to stay the same. But the other place will be a new concept.”

According to its Facebook page, Smuzi closed in August.

Costco hosts multi-chamber Alderman resigns Business After Hours event from City Council BATAVIA

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Aldermen will have to appoint someone to fill the vacancy on the Batavia City Council caused by Friday’s resignation of Batavia 5th Ward Alderman Steve Vasilion.

Vasilion, 59, was elected in 2013 after defeating Eldon F r y d e n d a l l Steve Vasilion for the 5th Ward seat. Vasilion said he resigned because of conflicts with his architectural firm, which he recently re-opened.

Because he has re-opened his practice, Vasilion said he cannot legally represent his clients before the city, such as in negotiating zoning issues or obtaining building permits, while also serving as an alderman.

His resignation was effective immediately.

“I have to be free to negotiate for the best interests of my clients,” Vasilion said.

He previously worked at a different local architectural firm, but he had no ownership

interest.

His term ends in April 2017. Aldermen at the Jan. 20 meeting plan to formally accept Vasilion’s resignation.

Details on the timeline that will be used to appoint a new alderman to fill out the remainder of his term also are expected to be announced at the meeting, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said.

Schielke said he was sorry to see Vasilion resign.

“He was a hard worker,” Schielke said. “He wanted to represent his constituents the best he could.”

Vasilion is the second alderman to resign in the past several months. In August, 1st Ward Alderman Garran Sparks announced he was resigning because he was moving to North Aurora.

In October, Carl Fischer was appointed to fill the seat, which expires in April. He will be running in the election in April against Carl Dinwiddie.

ST. CHARLES – Authorities have identified the man who died in an apartment fire Sunday in St. Charles.

David Hawksley, 60, of 104 S. Third Ave., was pronounced dead at 7:47 a.m. at the scene, according to a news release from Kane County Coroner Rob Russell. An autopsy was performed Monday, and Russell is awaiting further information. Toxicology samples were sent to the forensic laboratory for analysis, the release stated.

“From what I understand, he had cancer, and had trouble moving around,” Russell said. “At this point, there is no obvious sign of foul play, but we have to wait for the fire report.”

Fire officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire, St. Charles Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said. It was the city’s first fire connected to a

fatality in several years, Schelstreet said.

Firefighters arrived at 104 S. Third Ave. at 7:32 a.m. – two minutes after a resident in the downstairs apartment discovered heavy smoke on the second floor and called for help, Schelstreet said.

That man was able to exit safely, Schelstreet said.

Upon arrival, smoke was showing from a second-floor window, and firefighters found a fire in the second-floor unit, Schelstreet said. The fire was brought under control in about 15 minutes, Schelstreet said.

The loss was estimated at $50,000. Schelstreet said both rental units cannot be occupied.

No firefighters were reported to be injured.

The St. Charles Fire Department was assisted by units from Geneva, Batavia and West Chicago at the scene.

Units from Elburn and Fermilab provided coverage while St. Charles units were committed to the fire.

Rauner must make renovations Bruce Rauner has said he plans to live in Illinois’ 160-year-old executive mansion during the first legislative session of his tenure as governor, even though the historic building is in need of major renovations.

Much like the historic building Rauner plans to occupy, the government he now leads after becoming the state’s 42nd governor Monday also is in dire need of renovations.

Rauner, a Republican, will not be able to do it alone.

Democrats are firmly in control of both houses of the General Assembly. Rauner’s challenge will be in making legislative leaders understand that Illinois must become more business friendly. That they must make hard choices to set our financial house in order. That they must give Illinois the government it can afford, not the government they think people want.

Voters agreed with Rauner when he said he wanted the temporary income tax increase of 2011 to roll back as scheduled this year. Illinoisans are now keeping more of their money. There should be no backtracking on that.

However, the state needs a budget that is truly balanced. This year’s budget plan, which lasts through June, counted on the income tax increase being made permanent, and analysts have pegged the estimated shortfall at somewhere in the neighborhood of $2 billion. Next year’s budget could be $5 billion short.

Meanwhile, more than 10 percent of state employees had salaries greater than $100,000 in 2013, the most recent year for which data are available.

Rauner shouldn’t be expected to fix this overnight, but we would like to see a long-term plan to align state spending with revenue. It will require sacrifice, as well as streamlining, and the onus is on Rauner to ensure it is done equitably.

Rauner also must provide leadership on the issue of Illinois’ troubled public employee pension funds, with unfunded obligations to employees that now top $110 billion. Rauner’s predecessor, Pat Quinn, provided no leadership on this issue, which demands a new approach.

Leadership need not mean going it alone – it’s important to include stakeholder voices in the planning.

Unions, whose members rely on these pension funds for their security, should be invited to participate, or any future proposal will end up in court, too.

There are many other issues. Cronyism is alive and well in state hiring. Although they’ve fallen, the state’s workers compensation rates remained seventh-highest in the nation in 2014, and the highest of any state in the Midwest. The state continues to prorate its financial aid to public schools and universities, leading to budget deficits and high property taxes.

Unlike his predecessors, Quinn and Rod Blagojevich, we hope Rauner makes Springfield his home while he serves as governor.

There are plenty of issues there to keep him busy.

Say yes to Keystone, put politicized issue to rest BLOOMBERG NEWS At this point, Keystone XL has more value as a political issue than as a pipeline. That’s why President Barack Obama should just approve it already and put this absurdly politicized issue to rest.

True, the president has said he will veto the current congressional effort to force approval of the pipeline, but his objections seem more bureaucratic than substantive. And last week, the highest court in Nebraska, through which Keystone will run, quietly opened the door to allow him to approve the project through the proper channels.

To reiterate: The pipeline from Alberta, Canada, to the U.S. Gulf Coast is neither a threat to Earth’s climate (as its opponents claim) nor a boon to employment (as its proponents argue). The construction is expected to create only about

10,000 temporary jobs; only a few dozen permanent employees will be needed to run the thing once it’s built. And the pipeline’s actual impact on the environment is minimal.

What’s more, with the price of oil hovering around $50 a barrel, the economic rationale for the pipeline is shaky. Nonetheless, the wisdom of allowing TransCanada Corp. to build the pipeline remains as sound as it ever was: In the long term, it can make the United States more energy-secure.

As an immediate side benefit, U.S. permission could also be used to help coax Canada into a climate agreement with the U.S. The Keystone XL has been a hot-button issue for some environmentalists, in part because extracting oil from tar sands creates more pollution than drilling for oil. But the pipeline would be a net gain for the climate if it could help

prod Canada to cut carbon emissions.

Finally, there is the reality that, even if the Keystone pipeline is never built, Canada’s oil won’t stay in the ground. Even as oil prices have dropped over the past several months, extraction from the Alberta oil sands has continued. And even if $50-a-barrel oil causes some producers to slow production, oil prices will inevitably rise again, making oil-sands extraction economically viable.

This crude will get to market via rail and ship – as it has been – and possibly via pipelines that are in the works to Canada’s east and west coasts.

Keystone will not create many jobs for the U.S., and its delivery of 830,000 barrels a day won’t keep the price of gasoline low. But the U.S. still needs to import oil – and better to get it from Canada than, say, Venezuela. Obama has no good reason not to say yes.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

BACK IN THE GAME Grudzielanek takes helm as Cougars’ manager

The Cougars were in their second season in Geneva when Grudzielanek manned shortstop for the 1992 Rockford Expos. On April 9, he’ll preside over the first game of Kane County’s 25th anniversary campaign in his first managing job of any kind.

Grudzielanek realizes baseball has endured its share of changes since his 15-year Major League career ended in 2010.

He acclimated himself to many of them while networking at the recent winter meetings in his hometown of San Diego, and the Cougars’ new parent club, the Arizona Diamondbacks, liked what it heard.

“It’s kind of hard to get your name out there and say you’re serious unless you personally get out there and go face-to-face,” Grudzielanek said. “I think that’s the best way to do any kind of business. Reconnected with quite a few guys and worked it out a little bit.”

Grudzielanek admitted he “totally needed a break” after his playing career ended.

He didn’t want to miss more moments with sons Brody, 8, and Bryce, 12.

But as the boys grew older, Grudzielanek, 44, felt an itch to return to organized ball – not that his sons’ travel teams he helped coach were in disarray.

Current D’backs first base coach Dave McKay served the Cardinals in the same capacity.

In 2006, Grudzielanek won a Gold Glove as the Kansas City Royals’ second baseman with D’backs farm director Mike Bell’s father, Buddy, as his manager.

Several other staff members brought ties with “Grudzie,” whose overall baseball acumen – namely for the game’s coveted, gritty little things – quickly eased concern about his lack of coaching or managing experience.

“They rave about him.

His work ethic, his baseball knowledge,” Mike Bell said.

“To get a guy like Mark Grudzielanek, with his playing resume, his work ethic and passion for the game, you don’t get that very often

anymore. So we were very fortunate.”

Said Grudzielanek: “It was a chain reaction that was awesome. Very humbling.”

Grudzielanek played under several Hall of Fame or otherwise well-regarded managers during his career, including Felipe Alou, Davey Johnson, Jim Tracy, Dusty Baker and La Russa.

He’s spent much of the past few days pondering his style.

Men’s basketball: Missouri at Kentucky, 8 p.m., ESPN Kentucky survived a pair of overtime games to stay unbeaten, but those tougher-than-expected wins loosened the Wildcats’ hold a bit on the top spot in the AP Top 25.

The top-ranked Wildcats (15-0) were atop 63 of 65 votes cast Monday, ending a run of five straight weeks as the unanimous No. 1.

Kentucky beat Mississippi at home in overtime in its Southeastern Conference opener then won in double OT at Texas A&M.

Cougars pitching coach Doug Bochtler, a one-time Grudzielanek opponent in their playing days and an occasional golf partner since, has seen first-year managers excel in the D’backs system. There are four this season. Bochtler worked with managerial rookie Robby Hammock at Rookie League Missoula (Montana) in 2013.

Two years later, Hammock is preparing to manage at Double-A Mobile (Alabama).

“In many respects, I think the baseball will be the easiest part for Grud,” Bochtler said.

“I think the hardest part will be, ‘What time does the bus leave?’ and, ‘When is batting practice?’ and, ‘What happens when a guy breaks curfew?’ … That’s going to be the kind of stuff there’ll be a learning curve with.”

Again, Grudzielanek recalls his own MWL playing

career with good humor, a helpful tool considering he batted .246 in 128 games.

He’s eager to relive the day-to-day grind of early bus departures and half a summer spent on the road.

“As a kid, when you’re 20 or 21 or whatever you are, it’s just so much fun to be in that mix, playing baseball every day,” Grudzielanek said.

“And to have that and play from the heart and play hard is kind of what you miss a little bit when you get to the big leagues. Because a lot of guys kind of do their thing.

“I always kid around out here. I tell the guys that are like, ‘Oh, congratulations,’ I say, ‘The only difference between the big leagues and where I’m going to coach is that my guy’s going to run hard to first.’ So we’ll keep it going. We’ll see what happens.”

The Cougars ended a two-year player-development contract with the Cubs in September but retain a connection to the North Siders in Grudzielanek, who batted .312 in 202 games with the Cubs from 2003 to 04.

Grudzielanek was 33 and playing second base for the Cubs during Game 6 of the 2003 National League Championship Series at Wrigley Field, a night that’s difficult to discuss without mentioning

With the Cubs leading, 3-0, and five outs away from their first World Series appearance since 1945, Bartman, a fan seated down the left-field line, deflected a foul ball that left fielder Moises Alou appeared ready to catch.

The Florida Marlins rallied for eight runs in the eighth inning to take control of the game. They won the series a night later and captured the World Series shortly thereafter. It’s been 11-plus years, and only one thing has changed for Grudzielanek.

“I can sleep better,” he said, “but it’s a situation I’ll never forget. Obviously, it was history, it was a big part of what happened. Whether or not it affected winning or losing, we still had Game 7

to come back and win. And it’s tough to swallow, again. I mean, my biggest memory is Moises out there in left field and how frustrated and angry he was because he had it dialed in, and not to get an opportunity to see if that would have been a catch or not is where your thought goes.

“I mean, God, that was such a huge play. … In my mind, I think if he makes that play, I think we win it … win it in 6, but again, we had Game 7 to get it done, too.”

For the moment, there’s much better postseason juju at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The Cougars didn’t lose a playoff game there in September, and are primed to welcome a few returning Northwest League champions to their ranks in 2015.

That leaves Grudzielanek ready to take the reins and return to the clubhouse culture for the first time since his final game for the Cleveland Indians in 2010.

“For somebody who played the game like Mark – who was a good baseball player, good hitter, good defender … who could do a lot of little things as well as impact the game himself, I think anyone who could do those things has a natural edge,” Bell said. “Now it’s just up to him to develop the way he wants to as a manager.”

WEST CHICAGO – In its final action before Wednesday’s Upstate Eight Conference varsity position night, the St. Charles East boys bowling team topped visiting Geneva, 3,405-2,942, at Bowling Green.

“Another really great match against another really good program,” Saints coach Steve Dessauer said.

“Once again, St. Charles East really did well.”

Rob Olsen contributed a 279 game and 717 series to the Saints’ balanced attack, which also included a 682 series from Cole Cartee.

Geneva’s Mitch Spencer had the team’s high game (236) and series (618).

The conference season is set to conclude at the position night, set for the Glendale Heights Brunswick Zone.

All teams will roll three more games to determine the final results and regular season averages.

Regionals start Saturday.

“We’re looking at just one loss on varsity still,” Dessauer said. “High expectations. Bowlers are going to bowl well, stay calm. We’re ready to roll.”

Just when brothers Bennett and Chandler Fuzak had grown acclimated to the vast open spaces of Geneva’s contest gym, a conflict sent their most recent boys basketball game to much less cavernous surroundings.

The Vikings defeated Upstate Eight Conference River Division rival Larkin in the Mack Olson gym Saturday night after the school hosted the annual Newbill wrestling tournament earlier in the day.

Larkin initially was scheduled to visit Friday, but the game was postponed when School District U46 canceled classes because of cold weather.

The Fuzaks, who transferred from Wheaton Academy during the summer, drew heavily on Geneva Summer League experience and a handful of informal workouts this winter.

“This season we’ve had two or three shootarounds in there, and really at the beginning of the year,” Bennett Fuzak said. “Other than that, we haven’t been in it much this year, so yeah, it was a different atsmosphere.

A little different than usual.”

With respect to the hoops classic “Hoosiers,” of course, the rim rests 10 feet above the ground at the Mack Olson and contest gyms, as well as all other regulation courts.

To that end, Bennett Fuzak, a 6-foot-7 junior, delighted when his older brother, a 6-10 senior, rose for a fourth-quarter dunk.

“I was really excited to see him get one down,” Bennett Fuzak said. “It definitely got us going. It gets everyone energized, so it was good to see him get that.”

On a different night, perhaps another of the Mack Olson gym’s tenants – the Geneva girls gymnastics team – might have hoisted score placards as a nod to the feat.

The Vikings lost their fourth straight game Saturday, falling, 64-55, to Gary (Ind.) West Side at the Chicagoland Invitational Showcase at Fremd.

Although its uncharacteristic skid has put Geneva in the unfamiliar situation of trying to snap a losing streak, coach Sarah Meadows’ message to her team was clear.

“We’re not a bad team,” Meadows said. “We’re playing some competitive teams that Jeff Krage for Shaw Media are only going to help us when Geneva coach Sarah Meadows instructs her players during Saturday’s we get to the postseason, when game against Gary West Side at the Chicagoland Invitational Show- we play St. Charles North, when we play [St. Charles] case in Palatine. The Vikings lost, 64-55.

Despite committing a flurry of costly second-half turnovers, the Vikings (11-4) were within striking distance late in the fourth quarter.

After opening the final period down, 48-40, Geneva worked the ball into the paint and slowed down Gary West Side point guard Dana Evans (game-high 28 points) just enough to pull within two points with less than three minutes left in the game.

Senior forward Janie McCloughan scored eight of her team-leading 27 points in the final quarter.

McCloughan dominated the paint early in the quarter, as she had two putback lay-ins and an easy layup set up by a sharp cut to the basket to slice

into Gary West Side’s lead.

She later sank a pair of free throws to push the score to 55-53, but that was as close as Geneva would come to catching up.

The Cougars (8-5) scored nine unanswered points before sophomore center Grace Loberg hit a pair of free throws with one second remaining.

McCloughan echoed Meadows’ take on the Vikings’ outlook. “[Coach] Meadows was saying the locker room, she firmly, firmly believes that these games are going to pay off,” McCloughan said. “Especially come postseason, to get this experience now, even though we’re not finishing, it’s practice and we’re hoping that [with] the hard work in practice and this experience that in the postseason we’re going to be able to finish these games.”

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Pace Temple endured one final, frustrating stretch of inactivity before logging his first minutes of the Geneva boys basketball season.

Good thing it lasted a mere 2:17. The Vikings’ senior point guard and defensive ace admitted to something far beyond antsiness as he missed the team’s first dozen games with a left knee injury.

“I don’t really like sitting still in general,” Temple said, “but it’s a lot easier to watch your team win, which we did a lot of.”

Temple had a hand Saturday in helping Geneva to more of the same, contributing eight points and plenty of energy in 57-45 win against Larkin in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play.

Geneva (11-2, 4-1 UEC River) surrendered what had been a comfortable first-half lead in the final stages and trailed by two points at the break in a game played in the Mack Olson gymnasium because of a wrestling tournament conflict.

kings coach Phil Ralston helped the Vikings steer their way back to a winning course against the Royals (12-5, 4-3).

“At the end of the half, coach was really getting to us to pressure them on defense, make them uncomfortable,” Geneva junior Bennett Fuzak said. “So when we came out … we kind of stopped their offensive game.

Our defense led to some great offense. So it put us on a pretty good run.”

Larkin relied on its own momentum swing to take a 25-23 lead at the break.

Despite scrambling to shoot just 36 percent in the first half, the Royals enjoyed enough success from long range to stick around, making 4 of 10 3s. Larkin ended the half on an 11-0 run, doing much of its damage against various ballhandlers with Temple fighting foul trouble.

“It was kind of like, do you bite the bullet? Do you roll the dice?” Ralston said. “And I’m not much of a gambler. You’re not going to see me hanging out in Elgin or Aurora. I just don’t like playing bad odds. So we just

kind of just grinned and beared it and just tried to get to the end of the half. But I thought our energy the second half was tremendous.”

Buffalo-bound senior wing Nate Navigato topped the list.

Navigato scored each of his game-high 17 points in the second half on 5-of-6 shooting, plus a 5-for-8 effort from the free-throw line. Fuzak (12 points) and Loudon Vollbrecht (10) joined Navigato in double figures.

“He’s a good player. He’s a good player,” Royals coach Deryn Carter said of Navigato. “A couple times, he caught it while we were running and jumping, and I may have made some bad calls on that. It’s tough to keep him bottled up the whole game, you know, but it is what it is. He’s a good player. He made some big shots in that third quarter.”

When Navigato wasn’t connecting, Vollbrecht often found himself in position for the rebound. He had 13 to complete a double-double, prompting Ralston to compare him to “a vacuum cleaner underneath the basket.”

Mick Vyzral made his presence felt early for the Saints. Vyzral scored seven of his 14 points in the first quarter to help East jump to a 16-5 first-quarter lead that would continue to grow in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division game.

Vyzral also finished with eight rebounds, a team high.

“We just wanted to come out and play good, show some good energy, get through it and come away with the win.

Everybody played, too, so that’s great,” Vyzral said.

Jake Clodi took advantage of a little extra playing time to heat up. Clodi started the game cold, missing his first three shots, but exploded by making all five of his attempts after the half.

The senior guard finished with 13 points, scoring seven

in the third quarter and six in the fourth.

Cole Gentry also chipped in a team-high 15 points to go with two rebounds and four assists.

However, the Saints (14-1, 6-0 UEC River) only made 35 percent of their shots in the first half, including just 21 percent from 3-point range, leaving some room for improvement.

Sounding like a coach himself, Clodi said, “We did start off a little rough, but there is nothing you can do.

If you’re playing hard, shots will start to fall.”

The Saints improved drastically in the second half, hitting 22 of 36 shots, including six of 10 from long range, with all 6 makes coming from either Clodi or Gentry.

The Saints also made an impact on the boards, enjoying a 43-23 rebounding advantage.

Saints coach Pat Woods is looking for improvement next week, as East awaits key conference challenges from Larkin and Geneva.

Is Teryl Austin the next Mike Tomlin?

That’s the question Bears general manager Ryan Pace must try to answer as Austin, the Lions defensive coordinator, on Tuesday will become the fourth known candidate to interview for the club’s head coaching vacancy.

The comparison between Tomlin and Austin is apt because Tomlin spent one season as a defensive coordinator, in 2006 with the Vikings, before becoming the Super Bowl-winning coach of the Steelers.

Before his year in Minnesota, Tomlin was Tampa Bay’s defensive backs coach from 2001 to ’05, earning a Super Bowl ring under Jon Gruden.

Preceding his masterful but singular NFL coordinating job overseeing the NFL’s No. 2 scoring defense in Detroit in 2014, Austin coached the Ravens’ defensive backs from 2011 to 13, and won a Super Bowl under John Harbaugh.

Austin held the same position in Seattle from 2003 to 06,

and in Arizona from 2007 to 09.

Austin is 49 years old, while Tomlin was 35 when he landed in Pittsburgh.

As you can see, the Bears’ next interviewee actually has a fuller résumé than Tomlin did.

The main reason Austin is considered a fast riser in league circles Teryl Austin and reportedly has interviewed with Buffalo, Atlanta and San Francisco is because of his immediate success in Motown. Did he inherit a lot of defensive talent – far more than the Bears have to offer?

Duh. The Lions have All-Pro players at all three levels.

But is he ready to oversee an entire program? Has he built the necessary relationships to construct a winning coaching staff? Do players respond to his methods? The folks in Detroit seem to think so.

He’s lauded in league circles for his planning and attention to detail. I’m told he has a strong relationship with the front office – which Pace has already identified as being critical.

Some Bears fans will clamor for someone with previous head coaching experience – particularly given the stillgreen Pace. I can’t argue given the organization’s track record for almost exclusively tabbing first-time guys.

But just going off what I hear, Austin is ready. Similar opinions exist with Todd Bowles and Dan Quinn, both of whom have already met with the Bears.

Today, it’s Austin’s turn to make his case, and everything you’ve just read likely will be included.

Over the holiday break Canaan broke the York Jack Tosh Holiday Classic tournament record for most 3 point field goals made.

Senior, Abby Novak, averaged 15 points, 12.75 rebounds and 2.25 blocks at the Montini Christmas Tournament.

The IHSA will be under new leadership in January 2016.

Longtime executive director Marty Hickman announced Monday he will retire effective Jan. 15, 2016, after heading the association since 2001.

“I have known for some time that the 2015-16 school year would be my final year,” Hickman said in a statement.

“It was just a matter of figuring out the timing. Given the experience and continuity of our current staff and Board of Directors, I felt comfortable stepping aside a year from now.”

The announcement came after Monday’s IHSA board meeting. Hickman joined the IHSA in 1991 as an assistant executive director before being promoted to associate executive director in 1999.

He had previously served as the principal at Monmouth High School and Bluffs Jr.-Sr.

High School, Westmer Secondary School.

“Growing up, I didn’t know enough about the IHSA to dream about working here, but for the last 24 years I have lived the most challenging and rewarding job imaginable,” Hickman said.

“I will be forever grateful to the individuals that gave me this opportunity, including the Marty Hickman teachers and coaches at New Berlin High School who taught me lessons that helped me well beyond my days in school. As I reflect on my tenure here and look forward to my final year, I can say with absolute certainty that my life has been enriched by working for the Illinois High School Association.”

The IHSA said the timeline for naming Hickman’s replacement would be announced at an upcoming board meeting.

BY TERRY KOVEL KOVELS.COM Mysterious antiques and collectibles often appear in shops and shows. Price is then decided by how unusual the collectible is, how attractive it is and how it can be used. A recent auction offered this statue of half of a lady, from the waist down. The statue is life-size, 3 1/2 feet tall. The legs are dressed in tights, boots and a cloth skirt. There is a purse that has jewelry and brothel tokens from the Silver Dollar Hotel in Denver. Those who go to casinos probably know that this is an old base for a special type of slot machine. The base-and-slot-machine pair is known as the Prairie Rose Saloon Brothel Lady. She is dressed in 1880s style, but Prairie Rose was a famous cowgirl from the early 1900s, known all over the world. She performed in the Irwin Brothers’ Wild West Show.

In 1917, she went out in a blizzard to check on her animals, got lost and died.

Her body was found years later. It is not surprising that the Lady was sold at Morphy’s Victorian Casino Antiques auction along with many other gambling collectibles. Price: $3,000. *** Q: I have my parents’ kitchen table.

I’ve used it all my life. Markings under the table and leafs look like “AbrahamRichardson Mfg. Co., Beaver Falls, PA.” I can’t find any information on the company. Can you help?

A: Your table was made by IngramRichardson Manufacturing Co., not Abraham-Richardson. The company was founded by Louis Ingram and Ernest Richardson in 1901. It made porcelain enameled signs, sinks, refrigerator linings, walls, license plates and other items. The company was sold in 1965

and closed in 1967. Kitchen tables with enameled tops were very popular in the 1930s-’50s. They are still very useful, and sell for about $350-$500 if the enamel is not chipped. *** Q: I own a tennis racket that belonged to my uncle, who served in the military during World War I and died at age 26.

One side of the handle is marked “Greenwood,” and the other side, “A.G. Spalding Bros.” Please tell me what it’s worth.

A: Albert Goodwill Spalding (18501915) played major league baseball from 1871 to 1878. He and his brother, J. Walker Spalding, founded their sporting goods company in Chicago in 1876.

By the mid-1880s, the company’s products included tennis rackets. Spalding introduced its Greenwood model racket in 1905. Antique and vintage wooden rackets are collectible. We have seen the Greenwood model for sale at prices ranging from $90 to $190. Spalding still is in business, but it no longer makes tennis rackets. *** Q: I have an antique scale made by The Computing Scale Co. of Dayton, Ohio. It has a barrel-shape top with a glass dial. The numbers from 1 to 60 are on the bottom of the dial. There are numbers for pounds and prices in the dial.

There is a flat, round glass “tray” that the item can be placed on to weigh it. Can you tell me anything about it?

A: Your scale has a history that connects it to IBM. Julius Pitrat of Gallipolis, Ohio, invented the first computing scale in 1885. It figured the price of an item by combining the weight and the price per pound. Edward Canby and Orange Ozias bought the patent and founded The Computing Scale Company in 1891.

For many years, black Americans were treated differently from white Americans. Black children could not attend the same schools or use the same drinking fountains that white children used.

In the 1950s and 60s, thousands of Americans worked together to change these unfair laws. ADVICE Search low-cost options for counseling Dear Abby: In many advice columns it is often suggested to “seek professional help,” such as a psychologist or psychiatrist. This is a practical solution, but most often quite expensive, to the point of being prohibitive.

Where else can one turn to find assistance that will be practical, ongoing and cost-effective rather than something that immediately throws up a roadblock to wellness?

– Detoured By Finances Dear Detoured: Some of these suggestions might be helpful: 1. Contact a university medical school if there is one in your community, and ask to speak to the Department of Psychiatry.

Ask if it has an outpatient clinic.

If it does, inquire there. If not, ask if someone on the staff deals with problems like the ones you’re experiencing.

2. If you live in a town with a college, find out if it has a graduate school. If so, does the graduate

Handling grief differs from person to person Dear Doctor K: My spouse passed away last year, and I am still grieving. Is this normal?

Dear Reader: By coincidence, I’m writing this reply to your question on the 51st anniversary of my father’s death. He died very young. This is a sad day – at least for me, this grief never fully ends.

Grief is not a mountain to be climbed and then descended with a map in hand. It differs greatly from one person to another, and from one culture to the next. In America, there can be pressure, often from well-meaning family and friends, to attain “closure” by the time a year has passed. The truth, though, is that grief doesn’t neatly conclude at the one-year mark.

The more important someone was to your life, the more opportunities there are for happy and sad reminders that underscore your loss. The other evening, for example, my wife had placed a glass of wine near the edge of the dinner table. When I saw it, I instinctively moved it away from the edge.

Then I realized that my father was very compulsive about this.

When my sister and I were young, whenever we had placed a glass of liquid near the edge of the table,

Feelings of sadness, abandonment, loss and even anger are especially likely around birthdays, weddings, the anniversary of the death, and holidays or other occasions you might have shared.

A familiar scent, song or likeness can also trigger feelings of grief.

All of this is entirely normal.

So, depending on the strength of the bond that was broken, grief can be lifelong. Usually, though, grief softens and changes over time.

The raw, all-consuming shock of early grief will eventually begin to lessen. Gradually, at your own pace, you will find yourself adjusting to your loss and slipping back into the routines of daily life.

The following tips may help you to get through this difficult time: • Establish a simple, daily

schedule. A familiar routine can help restore a sense of normalcy and make grief more manageable.

It lends structure to the day at a time when life seems unfamiliar and out of control.

• Maintain a regular sleep schedule. When you’re grieving, sleep can be particularly important at helping maintain emotional balance. Grief is exhausting, and sleep can represent a relief from the emotional pain of loss.

• Keep up with your exercise.

A simple walk, a bike ride, yoga or a harder workout can ease agitation, anger and depression.

Exercise can serve as a distraction when you need a break from grief. Exercise can also help lift spirits by releasing mood-elevating hormones, relieving stress and promoting a sense of well-being.

• Finally, give yourself permission to grieve. Healing won’t happen on a schedule. Be patient with yourself. And if you need a break from grieving, that’s OK, too.

Parents make teen wait to date Dr. Wallace: When should a young lady be allowed to date? I’m a very mature young lady completely capable of going out on a date and enjoying the company of a young man. When I bring up the subject of dating (I’ve been asked out several times), my parents say I must wait until my 16th birthday.

What’s so important about March 2, 2015?

Does it mean that at the stroke of midnight I suddenly have the ability to know how to conduct myself in the presence of a young man? I am a very good student, have impeccable morals, attend church regularly, babysit regularly for our family doctor and am secretary of the sophomore class at school. Yet I’m not yet ready to attend a G-rated film with someone of the male gender, and then stop off for a snack afterward.

Tell me, Dr. Wallace, is the first second of your 16th year on earth the magic time when immature teens are turned into trustworthy adults?

Parents should be ready to stop whatever they’re doing and devote their full attention to their child the moment they get an inkling that he or she has something important to talk about.

Make yourself comfortable so the teen will feel the same way, and always maintain good eye contact.

Generally, it is more helpful to assist your teen in thinking through his or her personal beliefs, values and feelings, rather than asserting your own values. If a parent goes on at length about her own opinions, she may be lecturing rather than listening.

When you need to know certain information, you should elicit it by asking open-ended questions such as, “Tell me more about the party,” rather than saying, “There better not be any alcohol served at the party.” When your teen feels comfortable and not threatened with intimidating questions, you’re more likely to obtain quality information.

Also, his hand had six losers (one spade, two hearts, two diamonds and one club), which is the normal number for a game-try after this start to an auction.

Declarer has five potential losers in his hand: one spade, one heart, two diamonds and one club. He will have to ruff his two diamond losers in the dummy, but the first trick is critical.

Suppose declarer wins with his heart king, cashes his diamond ace and ruffs a diamond – what next?

He is stranded on the board.

However he exits from the dummy, the defenders can win the trick and play two rounds of trumps to stop the second diamond ruff.

Declarer must win the first trick with dummy’s heart ace.

Then the play proceeds: diamond to the ace, diamond ruff, heart to the king, diamond ruff, trump.

The defenders have no answer.
