Canadian celebration All-Canada Show wraps weekend run in St. Charles

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jay Garstecki expects he’ll return to the All-Canada Show.

The 31st annual event gave his relatively new organization – Take a Vet Fishing – the exposure it needed and wanted, he said.

“We’ll definitely be back,” the Bartlett resident said.

Held at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, the All-Canada Show featured more than 100 exhibitors and several seminars with such titles as “Bass, Pike, and Muskie – Oh Yeah!” and “Great Canadian Hunts.”

It ended Sunday and was the only All-Canada Show for 2014 because of a change in ownership, according to its website. In past years, the event traveled to other Midwestern cities, including Milwaukee and Indianapolis.

Taxidermy said his company offers a less expensive, quicker alternative to traditional taxidermy. It turns photographs of hunters’ and fishermen’s trophies into a replica printed on a fabric/ polyester removable adhesive, allowing people to peel and stick the trophies onto nearly any surface.

“We’re giving fishing and hunting enthusiasts another option,” Fiebig said, noting

the All-Canada Show was a chance for him to partner with various lodges.

Garstecki – who participates in the Professional Musky Tournament Trail – spent the weekend telling attendees about Take a Vet Fishing. Its one-day events – set this year for June 8 in Wisconsin and Sept. 28 in Minnesota – include four hours of fishing and a veterans memorial party.

Inspired by a friend in the Marine Corps, Garstecki started Take a Vet Fishing as a way to help veterans who are disabled or suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, he said.

As someone not in the armed forces, Garstecki said, this is his way of giving back.

He said he was encouraged at the All-Canada Show when veterans would stop by his booth and donate items, such as a hat.

“We’re doing the right thing for the vets,” Garstecki said.

GENEVA – Urban trees soothe the senses and calm people down, they save money by reducing energy costs and increase income for retailers as trees increase how much customers spend, according to various studies.

Andrea Dierich, of the Morton Arboretum’s Community Trees program, gave a short talk on the benefits of trees Saturday at Peck Farm Park in Geneva, celebrating the opening of the Geneva Park District’s “Trees of Illinois” exhibit Dierich said a tree census done in 2010 found more than 157 million trees in a seven-county area of Kane, DuPage, Cook, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will.

“They collected all this data; they brought it back in house,” Dierich said. “The census found that the trees in the seven-county census reduce energy costs by $44 million.”

The study found that urban trees remove about 677,000 tons of carbon a year – that is, they absorb 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide – and they remove about 18,080 tons of pollution from the air each year.

Trees also were found to impact home values by 6 percent in lower income areas, they create a sound barrier and their presence in urban areas had a calming effect on residents and visitors, she said.

“People want to walk in areas where there’s trees lined along the streets,” Dierich said.

Burlington Central sweeps Kaneland in boys-girls twin bill

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com BURLINGTON – Burlington Central boys basketball coach Brett Porto sported a bright, blue blazer for “Pack the Place” night Saturday, an ensemble ripe for teasing from his players.

Central senior guard Jacob Schutta wasn’t taking the bait.

“It gives us energy in the locker room,” Schutta said with a smile about his coach’s flashy threads. “It gets us going on a special occasion.”

The Rockets reciprocated, riling up their large crowd by running Kaneland off the floor in a 67-43 rout. The win capped a Central sweep of the doubleheader after the Rockets’ girls team pounded Kaneland, 54-33.

The boys result marked the

largest margin of defeat on the season for the Knights (8-5), who did not respond well after an emotional, last-second win against Morris the night before.

“I think we could have been a little mentally tougher, a little more focused coming in,” Kaneland coach Brian Johnson said. “But that can’t be an excuse. We have six seniors on our team, five who have played a lot of minutes.

We need to come out and we need to compete.”

The Rockets also played Friday, and were coming off a win against Richmond-Burton. Central (12-4) had little trouble regrouping to face the Knights.

Four Central starters finished in double figures, led

by Schutta’s season-high 17 points on 4 of 4 shooting from 3-point land.

“Once that first one goes in, it just builds the confidence, and you keep going from there,” Schutta said.

Central also received solid contributions from seniors Brett Rau (12 points), Reed Hunnicutt (11 points, seven rebounds) and big man Duncan Ozburn (10 points, eight rebounds).

The Rockets led, 33-23 at halftime, and padded their lead to 16 points by the end of the third quarter. Soon after, Johnson replaced all five players as a concession to a clunker of a performance.

“They’re a good team, without a doubt,” Johnson said of Central. “I think they’re a very good team, and we showed what our deficiencies are.”

Ty Carlson, fresh off his game-winner on Friday, led the Knights with 13 points

while John Pruett added nine.

Porto hoped the largely uptempo performance “sets the standard” for the way his squad is capable of clicking.

“Brian does a great job, and for us to match [Kaneland’s] effort and fight, and I think we exceeded it at certain points, I think it speaks volumes for the team,” Porto said.

The girls game wasn’t much closer as the Rockets (14-2) streaked to a 17-6 lead after the opening quarter and were never seriously threatened.

Central forward Sam Pryor was effective inside early and then found her perimeter shooting stroke, draining a trio of 3-pointers in the second half. Pryor scored a gamehigh 21 points and had 10 rebounds.

Kaneland (9-9) took rushed shots and struggled from the

free throw line but produced a silver lining in its own double-double performer, post threat Kelly Wallner. Wallner, donning goggles, led Kaneland with 15 points and had 10 of her 14 rebounds by halftime.

“And they’ve got a strong inside game,” Kaneland coach Ernie Colombe said of Central. “They’ve got three or four kids in there, so she’s really working hard.”

Coach Mark Smith’s Rockets are known as a terrific defensive team, so Kaneland has plenty of company in struggling to find its offense against the Rockets.

“It’s a combination of them playing good defense and us being a little inexperienced there,” Colombe said.

Shelby Holt and Alison Colby added nine points each for Central.

“We really stressed freethrow shooting during practice because early in the season our free throw percentage really wasn’t very good, but we worked on it a lot and now we’re pretty good,” Goetz said.

St. Charles East girls hoops wins minus Hilton KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East girls basketball team knocked off Elgin, 51-37, on Saturday despite playing without leading scorer Amanda Hilton.

Hilton experienced knee discomfort and played limited minutes in Thursday’s loss to Streamwood.

East coach Lori Drumtra said Hilton’s outlook is uncertain, saying the team will “find out what the story is on Monday.”

Drumtra said Katelyn Claussner adapted well to making the start at point guard against the Maroons.

“On Thursday night we kind of had to throw her in there, and just when you’re maybe not thinking about it and you have to try and fill in there, we struggled a little bit,” Drumtra said. “But tonight I thought she played really, re-

ally well and ran the offense well. I even had Kyra (Washington) play the point a little bit, as well.”

Still, the Saints (9-9, 3-2 Upstate Eight Conference River) would love to be at full strength with three conference games looming in the coming week, including matchups against Batavia and St. Charles North.

AURORA – Heading into halftime leading by only two points Saturday, the St. Charles North boys basketball team needed to find a way to pull away from East Aurora.

The play of senior guard Jake Ludwig gave the North Stars some added separation from their opponent early in the second half.

Ludwig was involved in the first four scoring plays for North in the third quarter, sparking the North Stars’ 7564 Upstate Eight Conference crossover win.

Ludwig added three baskets of his own, with an assist to teammate Alec Goetz as well.

Goetz finished with 30

points to finish as the game’s high scorer.

The strong start to the second half gave North the momentum it needed to cap off a 2-0 weekend after winning Friday at Geneva.

“I wouldn’t trade [Goetz and Ludwig] for any other backcourt,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “They work well together and they do a great job of taking what the defense gives them.”

Heading into the fourth quarter, the North Stars (9-5) had their lead built up to 4940, with the lead getting as large as 14 at one point early in the fourth.

But with the 3-point shooting ability of East Aurora (411), the Tomcats remained in the hunt.

I hope you will continue the work that you’re doing because there is great need for it.

If your letter makes just one person stop and think twice about WHY he or she would deliberately hurt or diminish someone else, it will have been worth the space in my column because sometimes those scars can last a lifetime.

Dear Abby: I recently lost a niece.

She had struggled with substance abuse and was away at college when she died.

I believed in what a wonderful person she was and could be, and often sent her cards of encouragement.

When my sister and her husband went to retrieve her belongings, they mentioned that she had my cards around her room.

I had hoped that her parents would give them to me, but three months later, they have not. Would it be wrong for me to ask for them? – Loving Aunt In The South Dear Loving Aunt: Please accept my sympathy for your family’s loss. The cards may not have been offered because your sister and her husband are experiencing the depths of grief. While it would not be “wrong” to ask if you can have them, don’t be surprised if they refuse to let them go – at least for the time being.

Having the possessions their daughter surrounded herself with may be important to them right now as a way of feeling closer to her.

Dear Abby: You said in your Nov. 14 column on bullying that you hadn’t received a single letter from anyone who had bullied others. Well, I was a bully.

As a young girl I’d tease and taunt, and when I was older I used sarcasm as a way to bully. I was involved in an abusive relationship in my 20s.

With support and counseling, I was able to stop being abused and being abusive.

I learned the feelings I had repressed – shame, fear and low self-worth from a childhood of sexual and physical abuse – were misdirected at the people around me instead of at my abuser, my father, as they should have been. I’m not saying this is an excuse for the hurt I inflicted on others, but for me there was a correlation.

I’m now in a loving and supportive relationship.

We have raised our children to be kind, thoughtful and confident individuals.

I’m involved with an organization supporting nonprofit programs in our community that empower abused children, reach out to the sexually exploited and help women experiencing domestic violence.

Because of the life I lead now, I have been able to let go of the negativity and shame of being abused, but the shame of being abusive stays with me.

I hope the people I hurt have forgiven me and have been able to move forward.

But I will never know for sure.

Thank you for allowing me to share my story.

To start this week, for a change of pace, let’s have some golf trivia questions. First, how far did the longest drive go on the PGA tour last year?

Having been asked that question, you are probably expecting today’s deal to be a grand slam, the longest drive in bridge.

Instead, though, here is a small slam. However, if you played it during a tournament and went down, it would make the drive home feel very long.

South is in six spades. West leads the diamond two. How should declarer plan the play?

South had a textbook threespade opening: a good seven-card suit and some 6-10 high-card points. North used Blackwood, hoping his partner had the spade ace and a minor-suit king, which would probably have made seven no-trump laydown. When South denied an ace, though, North had to be content with six spades.

(Yes, he should have signed off in six no-trump, to avoid a potentially fatal minor-suit lead. But that would have ruined the story.)

The careless declarer would win the first trick and immediately play a trump. But East would win with his ace and give West a diamond ruff.

Leading a low card usually guarantees at least one honor in that suit. South, though, can see all five diamond honors.

So, he should fear that the lead is a singleton. Before playing a trump, declarer should cash dummy’s top hearts and discard his remaining diamond. Then he can lead a trump and claim shortly thereafter.

District Contract Manager (DCM)

The DCM will manage the distribution within a geographic area for ACI Midwest, LLC responsible for negotiating contracts with Independent Contractors, managing delivery fees, and achieving service targets.
