AFTER FIRE, A FRESH START FEET by Karen finds new home at Tranquility Spa and Wellness Center

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – When Emily Loveland first heard that a fire had broken out in St. Charles, she thought it was a horrible thing. Then she heard that the building had housed a business run by a friend.

“I was devastated,” Loveland said.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 5:38 a.m. Sunday at the building, which included 826 S. Third St. and 828 S. Third St. in St. Charles. Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said fire was discovered in the basement and quickly moved upstairs.

It included a residence, as well as three businesses – FEET by Karen Reflexology, Ameliorate Massage and The Snippery.

There were no injuries, but the structure was destroyed.

Loveland saw photos posted on Facebook by Karen Heftman, who ran FEET by Karen.

She said she was moved to call Beverly Miller, who owns the building that houses Tranquility Spa and Wellness Center at 113 N. Second Ave. in St. Charles.

Loveland, a chiropractor known as “Dr. Emily” to her clients at the Tranquility building, had kept in touch with Heftman, who last year had considered working at the Tranquility site before settling on the place at Third Street.

Loveland and Miller agreed that they would meet with Heftman about her joining their team. Heftman agreed, and now – less than a week after the fire – she will see clients from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays at the new location.

“It’s a very big deal,” Heftman said Friday. “I’m speechless. I’m grateful. I’m blessed.”

Miller said she thought of how it would have felt to lose a business in a fire.

“Dr. Emily came to me on Monday about what happened, and I said, ‘Oh my gosh, we just really have to

Miller said that Heftman will be a good fit for the Tranquility site, which features a day spa, two chiropractors, a yoga studio and an acupuncturist.

It can offer facials, massages, manicures, pedicures and counseling. Heftman practices reflexology.

“She has a wonderful skill and expertise,” Miller said.

“It’s a win-win situation.”

Heftman said it is a time for her to look forward. She said she hasn’t been back to the site of the fire since Sunday, but there are things she will miss, “little things you love – chairs, your garbage can, your banner, business card holders, crystals I had.”

She said she was thankful to hear from people who offered to help and said she was grateful for help from the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce.

She said she was “overwhelmed and overjoyed with the support and the well-wishing.”

Fermilab experiment a step closer to launch

By CHARLES MENCHACA editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Fermilab is one step closer to starting a large experiment after moving a 13-ton block underground Friday.

The block actually is a piece of the NOvA near detector, located 350 feet under the Fermilab campus in Batavia.

A crew Friday morning used a crane to lower the massive block down a large shaft.

The near detector at Fermilab will be used with another detector in northern Minnesota to conduct The NOvA Neutrino Experiment.

Neutrinos are among the most abundant particles in the universe, according to Fermilab.

The experiment will help scientists determine the role that neutrinos played in the evolution of the universe.

“The neutrino is a quiet light ... hard to detect,” said

Xuebing Bu, level 3 project manager for the experiment.

Bu on Friday stood with his fellow NOvA collaborators next to the other seven large blocks of the near detector.

All researchers get to the detector on a two-minute industrial elevator ride below ground level.

Bu explained that he and his fellow researchers have to use a particle accelerator like the one at Fermilab to produce intense beams with many neutrinos. By building up the volume of neutrinos, it will be easier for the big detectors at Fermilab and Minnesota to spot the infinitely small particles.

Researchers said they will send the neutrino beams underground straight through the earth and close to the speed of light to the NOvA far detector in Ash River, Minn.

The block moved Friday was the eighth and final block needed for the Fermilab de-

tector. The process to get it down to the underground facility took about 25 minutes, including attaching the crane and lowering the block onto a platform at the bottom of the shaft.

Once the block from Friday’s move is added at Fermilab, the researchers will begin to fill the entire detector with a liquid through which the particles will interact. Filling liquid and also adding electronic equipment to the detector likely will last through this spring, said Karen Kephart, assistant division head for Fermilab’s Particle Physics division.

The entire far detector in Minnesota will be complete and ready to operate this summer. It is more than three times as high and wide as the detector at Fermilab.

“They make you feel real small when you are standing at the bottom of them,” Kephart said of the detectors.

Officials making visits to select document management system

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Kane County officials involved in choosing a new electronic court case document management system have begun making site visits as part of the selection process.

Chief Judge Judith Brawka told the Kane County Board’s Judicial and Public Safety Committee on Friday that the in-person visits are a way to avoid past mistakes and make sure the chosen system will be able to meet the county’s needs.

“Whichever vendor we choose will be a great improvement from what we have,” Circuit Clerk Tom Hartwell said.

Officials at the various offices associated with the court system – including the county’s chief judge, state’s attorney and public defender – have pushed for years to replace the courts’ current systems, which they say are outdated and dysfunctional.

As part of the project, the Judicial and Public Safety Technology Commission is asking the county board to approve budget adjustments in

“We do this once every 15 years,” Hartwell said. “These negotiators do this every week.”

The transfer of $20,000 to the budget line for conferences and meetings also is being requested. This will go toward travel expenses to view other case management systems and vendors.

The requests were forwarded to the board’s finance committee for review.

Stastny was released after posting $150 bail, 10 percent of a $1,500 bond. He is to appear in court Jan. 21.

Pino also was charged with two counts of domestic battery. According to police reports, Pino threw a glass

of beer in his girlfriend’s face, striking her above the right eye while they were at O’Brien’s Pub, 12 N. River St., Batavia.

Pino is being held on $50,000 bond, but court records show a petition was filed to reduce the bond amount. His next court date is Thursday. A hearing on an order of protection is scheduled for Feb. 6.

Number of legislators respond to municipal needs

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com AURORA – A handful of state legislators addressed several issues to local governments this week at the Metro West Council of Government’s legislative dinner.

Held at Gaslight Manor Banquets in Aurora, the nonprofit organization represents municipalities in Kane, Kendall and DeKalb counties. Lawmakers who participated were state senators including Karen McConnaughay, R-St. Charles; Jim Oberweis, R-Sugar Grove; Linda Holmes D-Aurora; Mike Noland, D-Elgin; and Sue Rezin, R-Morris; as well as state representatives Mike Tryon, R-Crystal Lake; Mike Fortner, R-West Chicago; and Stephanie Kifowit, D-Aurora.

The legislators responded to concerns presented by local mayors regarding the protection of local government revenues, maintaining local control and public safety pension reform.

To the question about local

government receiving revenue shares from Springfield, in particular proposed cuts to the Personal Property Replacement Tax, Tryon said it was a difficult issue because the state deals with so many needs, especially for people who are disadvantaged.

“I can’t say Karen McCono to raising nnaughay your taxes so we don’t have to,” Tryon said.

Noland, who is vice chairman of the Revenue Comm i t t e e , s a i d Jim Illinois is the Oberweis “lowest-spending state in the nation, per capita. ... We have the fifth-largest economy.”

Noland recommended altering the state’s financial dynamic by instituting a fair tax or progressive tax, where those with larger incomes would pay a greater percentage in income

tax to the state so it can pay its bills, its pension obligations and deal with its deficit.

“We are going to have to do something,” Noland said.

McConnaughay said Kane was listed as having among the highest property taxes of counties in the United States.

“Who in their right mind would give us another dime when we have not shown we can manage money?” McConnaughay said, countering Noland’s comments.

McConnaughay said she supported local municipalities to make decisions about “whether the firefighter shows up and the students get safely to school ... and those in the legislature need to stay out of your way.”

Fortner said he did not see how lawmakers could change the share percentage tax revenue without involving the very municipalities which helped create the shared revenue source to begin with.

In addressing the concern of shared revenue, Oberweis said Illinois needed to change how

it attracts and keeps business because it lags behind other states with friendlier business and taxation policies.

“The worst thing to do would be to increase the taxes,” Oberweis said.

A tax increase, such as the one suggested by Noland, would increase the current level of exodus of business and residents, Oberweis said. He also chided Noland for using the term “fair tax” which is a trademarked term for a movement toward repealing income tax and relying on sales or consumption taxes instead.

To the issue of local control, Elgin Mayor Dave Kaptain questioned proposed legislation that would affect the creation of tax increment finance districts – development tools that use tax dollars in increments for public improvements.

“We have an old river town with great needs,” Kaptain said. “It’s not ‘one size fits all.’ ” Oberweis, Holmes and Fortner said they supported flexibility for local governments to

decide issues such as creating TIF districts.

McConnaughay said if a questionable TIF is created, “That’s what local elections are for. Face your voters. When you face your voters, that is the best system in the world.”

Noland cautioned that TIF legislation had some vagaries, recalling the Sears debate in his district when $17 million was offered in a TIF that cost Carpentersville District 300 money for their schools.

“Municipalities are not the only ones affected by this,” Noland said. “Somebody has to stand with those impacted by TIFs.” Tryon said the TIF legislation was created in the 1970s to address blight, something he did not see as a draw for development or redevelopment, where someone would invest $100 million. Tryon said lawmakers needed to update these development tools for today’s use.

All the lawmakers supported continuing pension reform for the state.

In 1975, Karen graduated from Elgin Academy in Elgin. Karen attended Suffolk University in Boston, and graduated in 1979 with an art degree. She was a teacher and librarian for School District U46 for many years. Also, she was a librarian in Wayne, Bartlett and Streamwood.

Karen was an active member of the Little Home Church by the Wayside, Dunham Woods Riding Club and Book Club and Pottawattamie Garden Club.

She is survived by her son, Paul Riley Hansen; two cousins, Steven and Christie; and her brother-inlaw, Steven Hansen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Hansen; and her parents, Claude and Elaine Riley.

Lucas graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1962 and attended Iowa Sate University in Ames, Iowa. He was a Vietnam veteran.

She was united in marriage to Laurance Risch on Nov. 11, 1945, at St. Patrick Parish in St. Charles.

Elsie was a longtime member of the Kane County Homemakers Extension. She loved the outdoors and especially walking, as she could regularly be seen on many long walks throughout St. Charles.

Elsie greatly enjoyed attending the Geneva Community Dinners held at Geneva Methodist Church. The greatest pride in Elsie’s life was becoming a grandmother, and she had a wonderful relationship with her grandson, Mitchell. She loved her short time at Arden Courts, where staff and residents treated her wonderfully.

She is survived by her daughters, Pat (Dave) Heun of Geneva and Holly (Terry) Hein of Sugar Grove; and her grandson, Mitchell Heun.

In addition to her parents, Elsie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Laurance; and her uncle, Frank Bogaerts.

The visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, at Moss-Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St.

Don’t let weather ruffle your feathers Temperatures have moderated slightly but, baby, it’s still cold outside. And wet.

Yet a remarkable set of adaptations, including feathers and oil glands, keeps birds like this male dark-eyed junco relatively warm and dry. Note the water beading on his wellpreened tail.

GOOD NATURED Pam Otto This latest weather blast has me thinking of winters gone by, particularly those of my childhood. Back then, girls weren’t allowed to wear pants to school unless it was winter and you lived a mile or more away from the school.

Since we lived just across the street, I spent many a day envying my friends who got to walk a mile or more in the cold, while also wondering whether the exposed skin between the bottom of my little pleated skirt and the top of my knee socks would get frostbite. (And if it did, would everyone want to see? Would my knees be famous? Would I be elevated to the status of Tragic Playground Legend, just like the kid that supposedly fell off the fire escape and landed on the bike rack, which is why it was dented?)

My point is, exposed skin in sub-zero cold is an unpleasant but undeniable fact of winter life here in northern Illinois. We humans have our ways of coping (using our vivid imaginations, for instance) and our wildlife neighbors have theirs.

Take birds, for example.

They have exposed knees too, but even in the worst weather are usually only a little worse for wear. A magnificent set of physiological and behavioral adaptations protect birds from extreme conditions in winter and throughout the year.

For one, birds have been bestowed with several different types of feathers,

each of which performs its own function. Contour, or exterior, feathers, function like the shell of a winter parka, shielding the bird from elements like wind and rain or snow. In between, semiplumes help contour feathers keep their shape, and filoplumes perform a sensory function that helps birds with preening.

For humans, preening is important but nonessential.

For birds, however, it can mean the difference between life and death. Preening, which for birds is the process of using the beak and tongue to clean and “comb” the feathers, serves to re-engage the small barbules that make up each feather. Preened feathers lay smooth, and provide better protection from cold and wind.

Many species also have special pores located on the back near the base of the tail.

Known as uropygial glands,

as well as oil or preen glands, these pores secrete oils which are then distributed during

preening to help feathers maintain their water-repellent quality.

Then there are the down feathers. Humans know about the insulating qualities of down via our down-filled coats, but for birds, down is the equivalent of long underwear. Situated between the contour feathers and the skin, down feathers trap warm air close to the body and insulate against the cold.

Birds are able to manipulate – or fluff – their down and contour feathers, thus allowing a measure of temperature control. When a bird looks “puffed up,” it’s fluffing.

Fluffed feathers have nearly twice as much surface area and insulate nearly twice as well.

Another amazing avian adaptation concerns those bare knees. Birds’ legs stay protected in winter, not with knee socks and pleated skirts,

During this process, arteries that carry warm blood from the bird’s body into its legs divide into many smaller vessels, as do the veins that carry cooled blood from the legs back to the body. Heat passes between these smaller vessels, cooling the “outgoing” blood and warming the “incoming” blood, thus helping to minimize heat loss via legs and feet.

Birds further conserve heat loss by restricting blood flow to the legs, standing on just one leg, or perching so that their feathers cover their legs and feet.

They take advantage of cover where they can, and they aren’t opposed to huddling – or, for you romantics, cuddling – to keep the cold away.

Shivering is another effective tactic for birds use to fight off cold. Rapid muscle contractions generate heat, but also require energy in the form of calories.

Reliable food supplies, in the form of seeds from native plants, or supplemental

sources like birdfeeders, help birds maintain their seasonal fat stores and keep those internal furnaces stoked.

Location and positioning are key, too. The next time an arctic blast comes our way, try taking a look at your bird neighbors. If you don’t see any, you’ll know they are holed up in thick brush, a tree cavity, inside snow-covered conifers or on the lee side of a solid structure like a tree trunk or a house.

If they do happen to be out where you can see them, you’ll notice that most are situated so that they’re facing into, rather than away from, the wind.

This strategy keeps the wind blowing over, rather than under, the contour feathers, and it helps prevent cold air from reaching the skin.

And therein lies a winter coping strategy we all can use: When temperatures are low and the cold winds blow, try not to let the weather ruffle your feathers.

Coroner’s goal: Accreditation Accomplishment would help boost office’s integrity, Russell says

By ASHLEY SLOBODA asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – As part of his efforts to bring professionalism and integrity to his office, Kane County Coroner Rob Russell said he hopes to accomplish something no other Illinois coroner’s office has achieved: Accreditation.

The International Association of Coroners & Medical Examiners awards accredited status to agencies fulfilling more than a hundred standards in the categories of investigations, facilities, forensics and administration.

Fortunately, Russell said, the Kane County Coroner’s Office will be evaluated under the original standards and not the recently updated, expanded benchmarks. Already, he and accreditation manager Joe Tomanek are concerned that the coroner’s facilities might not be up to par.

“It’s the facility that may hinder us from being accredited,” Tomanek said.

Now in his second year as coroner, Russell campaigned on promises that he would restore integrity to an office previously marked by controversy. Chuck West, the previous coroner, had been charged with official misconduct. West died before the case went to trial.

Last year, Russell began to rebuild and reconstruct the office with such efforts as generating and rewriting the

policy and procedure manual; finding proper resting places for cremated remains stored at the coroner’s office; and compling and cooperating with an in-depth audit conducted by the county’s auditor, according to a list of achievements he compiled.

“This office needs to breathe and grow beyond my tenure,” Russell said.

The first-term coroner also has advocated for better facilities, as those he inherited are inadequate, he said. Problems include asbestos in the floors, poor insulation, old plumbing and, he said, a lack of storage space.

Additionally, he said, it lacks features that a coroner’s office should have, such as a locker room and showers for those who work in the morgue, office space dedicated for forensic pathologists and a proper room for visitors.

“If you lost a loved one ... would you want to sit over here?” Russell said, comparing the visitors’ area to a dungeon. “I wouldn’t.”

Russell and Tomanek noted the facility – which is at the Kane County Government Center campus in Geneva – wasn’t built for coroner purposes. It previously was owned by the Society of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart seminary.

“This was a laundry facility,” Tomanek said.

Lauzen – who clashed last year with Russell over budget requests – declined to speak further for this story. He said he wanted to keep his comments confined to those he made during the December board meeting.

Re-evaluating the cost of autopsies, reviewing autopsies and defining the coroner’s investigation role with law enforcement were among the suggestions.

The bottom line, Lauzen said Friday, is “we’ll be working together for the next three years.”

Meanwhile, Russell has set nine goals for 2014.

They include obtaining more grant funding, establishing a Coroner’s Needs Assessment Group, continuing to educate the public about his office and obtaining accreditation.

If all goes well, Tomanek said, the office could be accredited by July.

Accreditation should help the coroner’s office attract top talent and help it get more significant grants, Tomanek and Russell said.

“It’ll pay for itself many times over,” Russell said.

He noted the $3,500 accreditation fees are being paid for by a grant.

New voters The power to vote now is in the hands of many more Illinois residents, and some students at Batavia High School are among a new group of individuals learning that they will be able to cast ballots this year.

A new law went into effect Jan. 1 that allows 17-year-olds to vote in a primary election, so long as they will be 18 on the date of the related general election.

“Our democracy is strongest when more voters raise their voices at the ballot box,” Gov. Pat Quinn said when he signed the legislation in July.

“This new law will encourage young adults to take on their civic duties as soon as possible and make their voices heard in all Illinois elections.”

At Batavia High School, students learned about the new law Wednesday from director of elections

Suzanne Fahnestock. Seventeen-year-olds also could register to vote during the event.

Getting involved in the election process at a young age is important, as it helps instill a sense of citizenship and can lead to a better understanding of the election process and what it means.

It’s great that Batavia High School chose to teach its students about the new Illinois law, and we would encourage additional high schools in Kane County to host similar events.

The sooner the better – the next primary election will take place March 18, and the next general election will take place Nov. 4.

To the Editor: So, tell me – is it déjà vu all over again?

If I quoted some of the major headlines from a great many papers published virtually anywhere in the nation over the last week or so, most – if not all – would mention the snow and bitter cold that descended upon us.

This reminds me of the 1970s, a time when we were inundated with warnings of global cooling and how it was going to damage life on earth as we knew it, how the permafrost was going to move so far south as to affect some of our northern farming communities and their ability to grow crops, not to mention a shortened

But those in the Batavia area have the chance to voice their opinion on what types of activities and programs they would like to see offered in the community, as the Batavia Park District has been seeking feedback on its Batavia Teen Center.

Middle school students can share their ideas during a focus group meeting that will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Peg Bond Center, 151 Island Ave., Batavia High School students can provide feedback from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the same location.

This is a great opportunity for young people to speak up and provide input on what

they would like to see offered at the center, which opened in the mid-1990s.

The Batavia Park District is right in soliciting feedback from the very people who will – or are – using the center.

Young people with too much time on their hands often can wind up in trouble.

Providing them with programs that they actually want can go a long way in combating negative behavior.

In addition to the meetings, teens can submit feedback on the Batavia Teen Center’s Facebook page, on the Batavia Park District’s Facebook page and through forms available at the park district office, 327 W. Wilson St., Batavia.

These days, it’s global warming that is the so-called threat. Well, it’s 17 below zero as I write this, not gonna get

above zero for at least another day; O’Hare recorded an official 11-plus inches of snow; an expedition to the South Pole got locked in ice the other day (remember it’s summer down there now); Arctic ice was predicted to melt completely away in 2013 but instead the icepack grew by hundreds of thousands of square miles; and all the while this is going on, the atmospheric CO2 level broke the 400 ppm mark this past year, something we were warned could prove to be a point of no return regarding runaway warming.

Let me repeat my opening line – is it déjà vu all over again? Looks like it to me.

Whine, whine, whine Calling in about common sense.

How does that person call up and whine and complain that the Oswego School District was holding an institute day Jan. 6. Nature caused school closures because of extreme temperatures. No one to blame about common sense, and how he or she, the retired principal of 30 years, would have planned a better school calendar.

Well, now you can blame Mother Nature. Whine, whine, whine.

It looks weird Recently, in St. Charles, I had the pleasure of meeting two young, likable people in their 20s who had one thing in common – both had tongue piercings.

We must stress to the younger crowd that other tongue piercers have experienced infections, eroded gums, chipped teeth and hepatitis. Is a tongue piercing an indication of a stupid body mutilation? I’m sorry to say, but I think so. And it looks weird to see something on a person’s tongue.

You’ll have a ghost town I think Batavia might as well give up on age-related housing, especially since the majority of us who are over 55 can’t afford to stay here. We’re all looking to sell our homes because the

You’ve got to have some balance around sometimes, and it appears that the Batavia School District is only interested in spend, spend, spend, and tax, tax, tax. It never wants to give the taxpayers a break. So, take your senior housing or your age-restricted housing and stick it in your ear. Most all of us are going to be leaving Batavia, and you’ll have a ghost town.

Batavia has big plans, and they want financing from the city, which means financing from the taxpayers. Isn’t it wonderful that we can’t get a break from the school district, the city, the park district or anybody else, but these businesses, who have a lot more money than we have, can get any kind of money they want from us? It’s not right. It’s not fair. They ought to be able to sink or swim on their own. We haven’t gotten any payback from any of that TIF district downtown. It’s not right.

Many adorned their homes with lights, sang songs about snow, sleigh rides, a playful snowman and a saint, who morphed into a jolly old elf. Many exchanged gifts. Some were expensive.

Some were not. Some were overjoyed. Some were disappointed, especially the children who received a used gift or nothing at all. Somehow, in all this frenzy of gift buying and giving, we have mostly lost the true meaning of Christmas, which is the celebration of the birth of Christ. On that occasion, only the Wise Men brought gifts, and the angels sang peace on earth, goodwill to men. It was pretty low-key by comparison about what happens around Christmas and dominates our time and thinking today. If we scaled back our compassion of making Christmas a Bacchanalia, we might take a different view of what scriptures says and the six words the angels sang on that night. This, more than anything we can buy, is the most precious gift we can give to our children and to each other.

I’m calling about the snow on the sidewalk. Why can’t people shovel their sidewalk? I walk a dog in the residential area, and a lot of times, I have to walk in the street. It’s too difficult to walk on the sidewalk.

Even some of these big places, they don’t shovel the sidewalk.

It would really be nice if people would just shovel their walks for the pedestrians.

in maintaining the Depot Pond for ice skating. In years past, it seemed that there were numerous occasions when skating should have been allowed, but the red flag was posted. It gave the impression they didn’t want to be bothered. Last Saturday, it was open for skating. This was the day before the extreme cold set in, which should have hardened the ice all the more. The snow just prior to the extreme cold might have acted as an insulator, but it seems to me that the ice would not have suddenly become unsafe. But it’s Thursday, and the red flag is up, and it’s 19 degrees outside. I called the park district, and I was told that the ice was unsafe, due to water pockets. It was fine last Saturday.

How did it become unsafe during this recent cold record spell?

I don’t understand. If the park district finds maintaining this ice skating to be more trouble than it’s worth, please post a sign saying “no skating,” and be done with it.

Chamber seeks leadership in electronic age

By AL LAGATTOLLA alagattolla@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Jack Zaruba says the next executive director of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce must be prepared to lead the organization in the electronic age. Zaruba, president of the chamber’s board of directors, said the goal is to make sure the chamber is relevant in 2014 and beyond.

The chamber is seeking a new executive director to replace Roger Breisch, the outgoing executive director whose last day will be Jan. 31.

Zaruba said he had four resumes on his desk, and “all are qualified … all are excited about doing what we want to do.”

Last month, Breisch announced that he will be resigning as the organization’s executive director. At the time, he said that “chambers constantly need to be reinvented, and I’m not sure I’m the right guy for that,” although he said he was proud that membership in the chamber had increased

during his tenure.

Zaruba said it’s key for the chamber to “capture more of the business market than we have in the past.” He said the chamber is excited to be putting together a revamped website, which should be online in the next 30 days.

He said much has changed over the past 10 years. For instance, as a general contractor, he said he “can’t continue to advertise myself the way I did 10 years ago. … Yellow Pages are pretty much out.”

“We need to be more relevant to what’s going on to-

day,” Zaruba said. “Not that Roger wasn’t, but it’s just that things are changing fast. My goal is to be more responsive to that.”

He said a recent demographic study conducted by the chamber showed some areas that could be improved.

For example, of its 300 members, Zaruba said there is “a huge group of nonprofits in our group.”

“Are we generating any programs for them?” he asked. “No, not really. We’re going to try and focus on who we are serving.”

North’s leaders show the way past Geneva Callaghan hits four 3-pointers in Stars’ victory

By JAY SCHWAB jschwab@shawmedia.com GENEVA – St. Charles North’s speedy backcourt of Alec Goetz and Jake Ludwig made their share of plays in the open court, and they also commanded ample attention from Geneva’s defense.

That opened up vast operating space for forward Jack Callaghan, who delivered some of North’s biggest plays Friday as the North Stars earned a valuable Upstate Eight Conference River win against Geneva, 64-57.

“One of the keys we said to this game is you could not let Goetz and Ludwig have their way with you, and they pretty much did,” Geneva coach Phil Ralston said. “But a lot of that went back to our transition defense, which was not very good tonight.”

Goetz (18 points), Callaghan (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Ludwig (14 points) – North’s top players on the season – all came to play, with Callaghan finding his perimeter shooting stroke that has been slow to come around this season.

Callaghan buried three of his four 3-pointers in the third quarter as the North Stars and Vikings jostled for the lead, with North toting a 48-46 edge into the fourth.

“They were hedging a lot [on screens] so it just opened up the pop, so I was just wide open, and I got my confidence back,” Callaghan said.

North (8-5, 4-1 UEC River) gradually padded its lead in the fourth as Geneva’s offense stalled for more than four minutes to open the final quarter.

The North Stars led, 58-51, after a Camden Cotter layup, but the Vikings made one last, unconventional push to keep the outcome in question. The Vikings crashed the offensive glass hard in

Goetz then split a pair of free throws to make it 6057, and the Vikings’ Justin Durante missed a corner 3-pointer that could have tied it. Goetz made both free throws after corralling the rebound to restore a two-possession buffer with 22 seconds left.

“We’ve got to box out on those,” Callaghan said. “If we do that, it’s not even close down the stretch. If you want to take a positive out of that, if we box out, we’re probably up by 10 at the end of the game, maybe 12. But yeah, we’ve got to box out better.”

The Vikings’ post players struggled, with both Mike Landi and Loudon Vollbrecht fouling out after combining for three points.

Vollbrecht also was assessed a technical foul that contributed to a second quarter surge for North.

The teams’ first meeting of the season loomed large for both teams, which sought to remain within close range of conference-leading Larkin.

“Very disappointing to be in that position in the confer-

ence – we’re midway through the season, and we’re just .500,” Ralston said. “Outside of conference, we’ve got one loss … and some of those are against some pretty darn good teams. I don’t have a good explanation for our situation in conference but we now need other teams in our conference to help bail us out to give us a shot at this thing.”

Senior center Garrett Johnson added eight points for North, which welcomed back starting forward Erik Miller from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for almost a month.

North only had three practices in the two weeks since the Pontiac tournament because of a planned post-tournament break plus the weather-dictated school postponements early this week.

North coach Tom Poulin thought the layoff was evident during a first quarter after which Geneva led, 15-11.

“That was our main theme at the end of the first quarter – we were just playing,” Poulin said. “And we were still right there, but we were just playing. If we started to compete, we felt like we’d be OK, and I thought that’s what happened.”

Still, Geneva planned proactively for any Loebel absence – extended or not – by immediately promoting Loberg, a 6-2 force who starred at outside hitter during the volleyball team’s breakthrough run to a sectional title in the fall.

Loberg quickly emerged as a scoring threat as she helped Geneva through holiday tournament play, and the extra practices since only have boosted her comfort level.

“Absolutely. We’re jelling really great. She’s such a good athlete that she just got it so soon,” said Vikings junior forward Janie McCloughan, who scored a team-high 21 points. “I don’t know anyone else who could adjust as quickly as she did to the pace of varsity, and she’s doing just great.”

Loberg added nine rebounds, and joined Morgan Seberger with 15 points. Seberger helped diversify the Vikings’ otherwise transition-heavy attack with three 3s. Her 3-pointer with 1:51 remaining in the third quarter gave Geneva a 51-21 lead.

Ashling Davern added nine points for North, which has a week off before its conference road trip continues with visits to Streamwood and St. Charles East next weekend.

“We’re going to be all right, OK, once we get everything going. And we’re fine,” Masoncup said. “But today was a nice learning experience. It actually was a good thing. We needed it. We had a nice long talk and we’ll go from there.”

GENEVA – Geneva girls basketball players and coaches uttered “so long” enough times Friday night that one might have drawn an unpleasant air without proper context.

No, the Vikings weren’t obnoxiously wishing anyone goodbye after hosting St. Charles North in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play. “So long” simply served as the Vikings’ most common self-description.

Being “so long” allowed Geneva to irritate North with its 1-2-2 diamond press, the ultimate gateway to a 61-43 victory in which the Vikings led by as many as 30 points.

“Our team is long, so we just have to try to get as many touches on the ball as we can and use that to our advantage to get steals and make points,” Geneva freshman post Grace Loberg said.

Continuing with the length theme, North (8-10, 2-3 UEC River) met for an extended period of time in the visitors’ locker room after committing 29 turnovers and struggling to build on its momentum from a split in the recent Dundee-Crown Charger Classic.

Then again, the return of 6-foot-2 senior center Liz McNally – initially thought to be out for the season with spinal nerve damage – quickly turned coach Sean Masoncup’s postgame demeanor.

Her size should attract attention in the paint and help junior forward Nichole Davidson (game-high 24 points) operate in more space on the perimeter.

McNally, who played limited minutes Friday as she rebuilds her stamina, was cleared for partial duty last week and for full basketball activity two days ago. Her spine is not fully healed.

“She’s just basically toughing it out, because it can’t get worse,” Masoncup said. “It’s

3-point assault carries Batavia to first River win

By DENNIS D. JACOBS editorial@kcchronicle.com STREAMWOOD – Canaan Coffey quickly put an end to any suspense to who would claim its first Upstate Eight Conference River Division victory Friday.

Coffey hit a pair of 3-pointers as the Batavia boys basketball team jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead en route to a 69-46 victory over Streamwood. Coffey got the bounce on another 3 from the top of the key with three seconds left in the opening quarter to extend the Batavia lead to 18-8.

“It felt really good,” Coffey said of his shooting stroke. “Actually, in the fall, I dislocated my shoulder, so I had to wear a brace, Canaan Coffey and this is the first game without it. I practiced this week without it and it felt real good.”

Plenty of other Bulldogs (6-9, 1-4 UEC River) were feeling good shooting from long distance, as well. Six different Batavia players made 3-pointers, as the Bulldogs sank a total of 12 shots from beyond the arc.

“We have that capability,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. “We do have pretty good shooters. Canaan came out early and hit some. Danny [Pieczynski] can hit them.

Obviously, Micah [Coffey] can hit them.”

Pieczynski hit a pair of 3-pointers early in the second quarter to push Batavia’s lead to 15 and Micah Coffey buried one from the left corner with two seconds left in the first half to put the Bulldogs up, 39-17, at the break.

Batavia had no trouble getting open looks against Streamwood’s man-to-man defense.

“The way they defended our offense, we could fade a lot, so we could get out by the 3-point line,” Canaan Coffey said. “Our 3-point shooters

were just knocking it down today. It was contagious.

Everybody else kept hitting.

We were just having fun out there. It was awesome.”

The Bulldogs hit their first six shots from the field in the second half, including 3-pointers by both Canaan and Micah Coffey, and Tyler Lovestrand to open up their largest lead of the night, 5321.

After that, Batavia starters saw little action, but the bench kept up the hot shooting. Junior Chasen Peez hit a 3 in the third quarter and senior Alex Bala scored another at the start of the fourth.

Meanwhile, the Sabres (112, 0-5) struggled on offense against Batavia’s man defense.

Streamwood went the opening 6:30 of the game without scoring from the floor and made four field goals in the first half.

“I thought defensively we were pretty good about being in the right spot,” Nazos said.

“I thought our pressure on the ball was really good. Being able to ball pressure and making them uncomfortable helped out a lot.”

The Bulldogs forced 21 turnovers. That was just four more than they committed, but most of those came late, as Nazos emptied his bench.

Batavia had just five turnovers in the first half.

The Streamwood cause was not aided by having two starters in foul trouble.

Sophomore Jacob McGlone fouled out with 3:11 left in the third quarter after scoring 10 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

Junior Cole Seger spent much of the game on the bench and eventually fouled out early in the fourth quarter.

Canaan Coffey led a balanced Batavia attack with 13 points. Pieczynski added 11 and Tucker Knox scored 9, all in the first half.

Antonio Harris led Streamwood in scoring with 17, win 10 coming in the fourth quarter.

BOYS BASKETBALL: ST. CHARLES EAST 83, ELGIN 50

Adduci scores 40 on Elgin

By JAKE POWERS jpowers@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East senior guard Dom Adduci has found that extra time in the gym pays dividends come game time.

Adduci scored a career-high 40 points Friday, including 32 in the first half, to lead St. Charles East’s boys basketball team to an 83-50 victory over Upstate Eight Conference River foe Elgin.

East coach Pat Woods stressed that Adduci’s performance was a direct result of the amount of effort he puts in in practice.

“He’s such a good kid, and what people don’t know about him is that he’s a gym rat,” Woods said of Adduci. “He’s always shooting, so there’s a reason why he’s able to find the basket the way he does, because he puts the time and effort that a lot of kids don’t into making them.”

Adduci opened the game with three consecutive 3-pointers to open a Saints lead that would hold for the remainder of the game. Ad-

duci added an additional four points in the quarter, but Elgin guard Isaiah Butler contributed 10 points of his own in the opening period to keep the Maroons (5-10, 1-3 UEC River) within striking distance.

Entering the second quarter ahead, 18-13, East (10-7, 4-2 UEC River) quickly established a presence in the paint by way of forward AJ Washington.

Washington Dom Adduci kicked off the quarter with a dunk off of a feed from guard Cole Gentry, and then converted on a reverse layup set up by a Mick Vyzral entry pass.

Adduci took over the second quarter from there. He hit four 3-pointers in a row after Washington’s baskets and finished the quarter with 19 points. East looked to get the ball to Adduci on almost every possession for the rest of the period after he made it clear that he had the hot hand.

“We did a great job as a team moving the ball and penetrating in the gaps,” Adduci said. “All of our guards, our bigs, did a good job playing inside out. Credit to them for finding me and having the confidence in me to pass the the ball and find open looks.”

Woods was pleased with Adduci’s efficiency, something that is rarely seen in such a high-scoring performance.

“He was better than 50 percent [shooting],” Woods said. “That’s what I’m probably the most happy with. To be able to score 40 points and shoot 8 for 16 from 3 and better than 50 percent from two, that means he’s taking a lot of good shots.”

Adduci’s second quarter scoring put the Saints up, 48-27, heading in to halftime.

East was able to dig deep into its bench in the second half to coast into the easy conference win.

After Adduci’s 40 points, the Saints were led by Washington (13 points), Jack Bronec (nine) and Gentry (eight).

By JARED BIRCHFIELD editorial@kcchronicle.com MAPLE PARK – A Ty Carlson basket with less than a second left in the game saved a Kaneland boys basketball victory as the Knights edged Morris, 42-41, on Friday in Northern Illinois Big 12 East play.

Trailing by a point with 5.3 seconds to play, Cole Carlson inbounded the ball from the Morris baseline with a half-court pass to John Pruett. Pruett saw Carlson alone under the basket and fired the ball to him, and the senior put the ball in the hoop.

“It was awesome,” said Ty Carlson, who led all scorers with 18 points. “Great awareness by John. I was suppose to be by the 3-point line to get open for a shot. I crashed and went inside and John found me.”

The play capped a frantic 71 seconds of basketball in which a Kaneland six-point lead, 40-34 transformed into a one-point deficit.

“Tough loss. That’s two years in a row we lost at the buzzer by a point to them up here,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said.

With 1:11 left in the game, Mor-

ris’ Sam Allen sank two free throws to cut Kaneland’s lead to 40-36. The senior guard then drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner with 42.7 seconds remaining to pull the Redskins within a point.

Using a trapping defense, Morris (9-3, 2-1 NI big 12 East) forced a Kaneland turnover and took the lead with 27 second left to play on a Tanner Sampson basket.

Neither team was able to cash in on trips to the free Ty Carlson throw line in the last 20 seconds.

After Morris missed the front end of a one-and-one, Kaneland rebounded the ball and called a timeout to set up the last play.

The Knights were expecting to inbound the ball from midcourt but the referees indicated the throw in had to be from the baseline.

“I was confused,” Kaneland coach Brian Johnson said. “But we ran the same play that we wanted to run on the sideline. I thought Cole made a great pass. Ty made the right cut to the bucket. John made

the right pass and we were lucky to win.”

“On the road to battle back from down six to take the lead, I thought our guys did a decent job,” said Blumberg. “We just didn’t have a free throw, didn’t defend the sideline and over-pursued, and gave up a layup.”

Kaneland (8-4, 2-1) led most of the night. The Knights held an 8-7 lead after the first quarter and increased their lead to eight points at the half, 19-11.

Morris rallied in the second half and narrowed the gap six points by the end of the third quarter, 31-25.

The Redskins tied the contest at 31 all two minutes into the final quarter on a Austin Patterson basket.

Patterson was Morris’ high scorer with 16 points, include four 3-pointers.

Kaneland responded with a 9-3 run. Ty Carlson scored seven of the points and Drew David contributed a basket. David, playing in his 85th varsity game for a new school record, scored eight points.

Pruett scored 14 points for the Knights and Jake Walker chipped in 10 for Morris.

BOYS BASKETBALL: ST. FRANCIS 53, AURORA CENTRAL CATHOLIC 39

St. Francis pulls away from Aurora Central Catholic

By JAY KAFER editorial@kcchronicle.com AURORA – The St. Francis boys basketball team rolled to a 53-39 victory Friday night against Suburban Christian Conference foe Aurora Central Catholic.

St. Francis (6-5, 3-1) never trailed the entire game after Zach Prociuk scored on the Spartans’ first offensive possession of the game.

Aurora Central Catholic (1-11) was able to hang tough with the Spartans throughout the course of the first half, and kept within striking distance heading into halftime, down 26-22.

However, St. Francis turned things around in a big way in the

second half, extending its lead to 13 by the end of the third quarter.

St. Francis forward Adam Hart, who grabbed 13 rebounds, said a greater focus from his teammates after halftime.

“We just came out more mentally prepared in the second half,” Hart said. “We were more focused and also being able to outrebound them, both offensively and defensively, was a key to being able to pull away late in the [third] quarter.”

St. Francis coach Bob Ward was impressed with several aspects of his team’s play.

“Defensively, we got better as the game went on,” Ward said. “We did a great job guarding their shooters.

They shoot the 3-pointer so well, but we did a good job getting hands in the faces of their shooters. Inside scoring was also a big factor.”

Prociuk led the Spartans with 15 points while post players Kilian Brown and Hart scored 11 and nine points respectively.

St. Francis’ defense held ACC to 2 of 14 on 3-point shooting.

ACC featured a balanced scoring attack with 10 different players finding the scoring column. The Chargers were led by Brett Czerak and Nick Faltz, who both scored seven points.

Senior center Sean Anger made his season debut for the Chargers after recovering from a broken collarbone.

AURORA – Playing without fouled-out point guard Mike Sheehan for the final quarter-plus Friday night, the Marmion boys basketball team turned to anyone who was willing to contribute.

Several Cadets answered the call in a 6256 win against Suburban Christian Conference Blue rival Aurora Christian, including Jake Esp, who led the team with 18 points.

“This was a toughness win for us,” Marmion coach Ryan Paradise said. “We played well together and never lost our composure.”

Sheehan scored 14 points for Marmion (69, 1-1 SCC Blue), which used balance to help cancel out twin 18-point efforts from Johnathan Harrell and R.D. Lutze of the Eagles (9-7, 1-3). The Cadets led, 30-22, at halftime.

“We had a cushion the whole third, fourth quarter,” Paradise said. “It wasn’t pretty down the stretch, but we hit some free throws in big spots and got some stops when we needed to.”

Rosary girls basketball sophomore Taylor Drozdowski has grown accustomed to battling taller forwards this season, and is having some success doing it. In Thursday night’s 47-40 win against Aurora Central Catholic, Drozdowski scored 13 points, including an inside basket that gave the Royals a 42-38 lead with 1:13 to play in the game. Drozdowski spoke with Chronicle sports editor Jay Schwab after the game for this week’s Weekend Chit-chat, in which she discussed the rivalry win, Rosary’s loss of standout Megan Conlin to an ACL tear and the season’s stretch run.

What’s it like playing ACC, just from a mentality standpoint?

It’s tough. They’re a tough team to play, and we always look forward to it. It’s one of

our top games of the season.

It’s always a good game.

Neither team was really shying from collisions. Is it a game that you just know you’re going to come out a little bruised and banged up afterward?

Yeah, you definitely know you’re going to come out a little bruised, but it’s worth it in the end. Bruises are just a little aftermath. It’s nothing.

What’s it been like for you

guys regrouping after Conlin got hurt?

We’ve had to make a lot of adjustments. … She’s a really big part of our team, and we miss her. I just wish she could play with us again, but we’re adjusting.

You guys have about a month left in the season.

What’s the mindset for what you guys are trying to get out of the final month?

If there something you’ve had to change with your role in particular?

In the beginning of the season I played a 4/3 position, and normally I played the 3 because Megan was a 4 but when she got hurt I got moved down to the 4. I’m one of the shortest littles 4s in the league, so I’ve got to be tough down there. It’s a big adjustment, but I’m making it for the team.

What’s it like playing for coach (Jessie) Wilcox? She’s a younger coach so I imagine you guys find her pretty relatable?

We can so relate to her. I love her. She just fits in with

We’re just trying to make our second half of our year better. We had a rough time in the Oswego tournament so we came back after break and regrouped. Then we played Montini. Now we’re just regrouping, [and beating ACC] is the start to a great second half.

We’re just looking forward to regionals and all that stuff.

Do you have any family history at Rosary?

No. I’m the first one to go to Rosary. My mom went to Oswego, and my dad went somewhere up north.

And are you enjoying it?

I love it. Absolutely love it. It’s my favorite. I’m so glad I went here.

Piechota becomes third D-I recruit for Batavia baseball Jacob Piechota trusts that the Western Michigan baseball coaches will be smart about keeping his arm healthy.

That impression is part of what emboldened the Batavia senior left-handed pitcher to verbally commit to the Broncos earlier this week.

Piechota said Western Michigan’s coaches stressed how serious they are about innings limits, taking proactive training measures to stave off injury and responding to cues about how their pitchers are feeling.

“I really, really liked the foundation the coaches had and what they taught,” Piechota said. “They really focus on keeping their players healthy. No pitchers have had any major surgeries, which I really like. They keep their players healthy.”

Indiana also showed some interest in Piechota but was taking a wait-and-see approach, Piechota said.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder already has raised his fastball velocity from the upper-70s to the mid-80s in recent months while referring to a velocity program from the National Pitching Association.

“I’m still doing that, and it’ll hopefully keep increasing my velocity,” said Piechota, who could also compete for time at first base in college.

Piechota said an assistant coach at Western Michigan noticed him while he was competing at a travel tournament at Notre Dame in July with Team Pro Player.

He’s made a pair of trips to the Kalamazoo, Mich., campus since, and plans to

take an official tour of the Mid-American Conference school in the coming weeks.

One of Piechota’s instructors with Pro Player, Ken Raines, was a former pitching standout at Western Michigan, while ProForce Sports Performance owner Chris Browning – with whom Piechota trains – played college football at WMU. “He’s really excited about my commitment,” Piechota said of Browning, a Batavia graduate. “He kind of, not swayed me, but reassured me I was doing the right thing. He loved the campus and loved the atmosphere.”

Piechota was one of the key arms as a junior for the Bulldogs, who finished 27-7 after being upset by Hoffman Estates in a regional semifinal.

Piechota could ascend to Batavia’s ace this spring for a pitching staff that also could feature fellow lefty Evan Acosta and Colby Green, with Eustace likely serving as the Bulldogs’

closer.

Batavia’s senior class already includes five college recruits – the D-I trio, plus Green (Upper Iowa) and infielder Andrew Siegler (Judson University).

“I’ve played with them since I was 8 years old and always knew there was something special about our class,” Piechota said.

“I knew we’d be really good once it came to high school.”

Piechota’s older sister, Caitlin, plays college volleyball at Western Carolina.

Nebergall to Bowling Green: Geneva boys soccer senior Beck Nebergall has committed to Bowling Green, according to his club program, Campton United.

The versatile Nebergall scored eight goals and had three assists in the fall for the Vikings. Bowling Green also competes in the MAC.

Some Hall voters do vote for them, believing I suppose, that in a morals-free, un-subpoenaed world, everybody is a cheater. I don’t. I will never vote for the obvious dopers.

But these three men before us now – a lefty pitcher, a righty pitcher, a huge slugger – seem pure. We’ll never know anything for sure anymore. But these guys seem to

Maddux and Glavine, then with the Braves, made their famous, hilarious – and far too prescient – TV ad for Nike in 1998, stating, before being shot down by Heather Locklear, “Chicks dig the long ball!’’ Also in that ad was the Cardinals’ Mark McGwire, hitting long balls and flexing his biceps on a billboard like the hero he never was.

Juicer McGwire got just 11 percent of the Hall votes this year. He’s sinking fast from a 23.7 percent high in 2010 and soon will likely join cheater/home-run hitter Rafael Palmeiro and drop below the 5 percent mark and exit the ballot entirely.

Palmeiro and McGwire have 1,152 home runs

between them. Incredible.

And they’ll never get voted into the Hall. Because, at some point, rules must mean something. Which brings us back to Glavine, Maddux and Thomas.

Their stats are overwhelming and great, as they need to be. As Hall President Jeff Idelson will say of the 211 player plaques in Cooperstown: roughly one player out of a hundred – of the 18,000 players who have worn major-league jerseys – are voted in.

Do the math. That’s like one Hall of Famer for every millionth kid who picked up a ball or bat in the sandlot.

But more than that, in this dubious era, Glavine, Maddux and Thomas have brought back some faith in, let’s just call it integrity.

Thomas, who had his wife and five kids in attendance, said afterward, “I’ve talked with Hall of Famers, and they say our legacy is what we own. They don’t want

anything tainted in Cooperstown. They’re harsh about it.’’

Of himself and PEDs, he said, “At any early age I said, ‘I will not do that to my body.’ Never tempted.’’

Maddux and steroids?

The mind snickers. Six feet tall, about 185 pounds, with a portion of that being beer gut, Maddux looked like Mr. Peepers in a ball cap.

Yes, looks have become important in this You-Figure-Out-The-Roiders Era, which, by the way, isn’t over.

Maddux said he hoped to retire as a Cub, but that little San Diego deal at the end was too good to pass up.

“Wrigley Field, when the wind’s blowing in, it’s a beautiful thing,’’ said perhaps the smartest right-handed pitcher in history.

Hawks rookie backup goalie Raanta is all smiles CHICAGO – Antti Raanta watched fellow Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford toward the end of Friday’s practice and waited his turn to take the net.

He waited.

And waited a little more.

Bingo.

Crawford vacated his spot in the crease and greeted his backup with a fist bump.

Which is to say, a glove bump.

This is how goaltenders greet each other.

“Something stupid like the goalies usually do,” Raanta, 24, said with a smile after the end of practice at Johnny’s IceHouse West.

“That’s usually the best part of the day, when you go to the ice and have fun there.

It’s only like 45 minutes, an hour, so you just try to keep going hard but keep on smiling and keep on having fun.”

In a new role on a new team in a new country, Raanta is having fun.

And just as McCown quickly bonded with Jay Cutler, Raanta has become fast friends with Crawford.

“When I first met Corey, I knew he was going to be a great guy,” said Raanta, who signed a one-year deal in June after starring in Finland. “Of course, after last season, I watched a couple tapes about him. So I knew he has good speeches, also.”

Bleepin’ right, Chicago.

Yet the funny Finn also has good perspective to go along with his sense of humor.

On Friday, Raanta entered the Hawks’ locker room to see a dozen or so reporters and TV cameras surrounding Crawford. The

Hawks will head north to visit the Montreal Canadiens today, and Crawford (a Montreal native) is scheduled to start in net, so it made for an easy story of the day.

Raanta didn’t seem to mind the fact that no cameras stopped in front of his locker. Likewise, he has had no problem serving as Crawford’s fill-in, during which time he has posted a terrific 11-1-3 record with a 2.27 goals-against average in 16 games.

By comparison, Crawford is 17-7-5 with a 2.49 goalsagainst average in 30 games.

He missed several weeks in December because of a groin injury but reclaimed his starting job upon returning Jan. 2.

“I wasn’t expecting that I was going to be the first guy straight away,” said Raanta, who aspires to have a long career in the NHL. “Of course, you have to earn the minutes, and you can’t expect anything else if you’re

not working hard and you’re not showing the team and showing the coaches that you’re stopping the pucks. …

“Everything is new, so I just try to get my game to the top level all the time and try to learn new things. Every time when we play, even if I’m on the bench, I see new things on the ice.”

Now that he’s in the U.S., Raanta sees new things just about everywhere he goes.

“The different language is the huge thing,” Raanta said.

The roads aren’t so bad.

In Finland, people also drive on the right side of the road.

“Driving is pretty easy here,” Raanta said, “if you just watch where you’re

going.”

As for how Chicago compares with Raanta’s hometown of Rauma?

“I’m going to say it’s a pretty huge city,” Raanta said. “Like, if I go to my hometown, it’s 38,000 people.

I can go to O’Hare and see that many people in one day.

“But it’s been really nice.

The city, every day is a new day. You can go to restaurants, you can find new places to go.

“To a small-town kid, it’s pretty nice to live in Chicago. And everybody is nice here.”

Another Stanley Cup championship is a legitimate possibility for the Hawks in 2014. Raanta provides a reliable backup plan if Crawford goes down.

Life is good, Hawks fans.

NEW YORK – They walked into the Vanderbilt Room at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, and it all just looked right.

Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, Frank Thomas – the newly elected 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame members – took their seats at the dais for this first news conference before their official induction into the Cooperstown shrine in July.

“Obviously, I’d like to thank the writers for picking me,’’ said Maddux, winner of 355 games, four Cy Young Awards, 18 Gold Gloves. “I appreciate it. Very humbling experience, like Tom said.’’

Yes, Glavine had started by thanking the writers.

And Thomas would say, “For me, I’ve got to thank the writers. I’m overjoyed, overwhelmed.‘’ Thank you, fellows. We’ll take that. I’ll take that.

And thank you for being who you are.

But they may be saving the best act for last.

What if the Sox come from nowhere to land Masahiro Tanaka? What would that do for general manager Rick Hahn’s reputation?

Not to mention interest in what was an almost unwatchable team last summer.

Or for the joy of elbowing out the Cubs, first thought to be a bigger player in the Tanaka sweepstakes?

The Sox have surprised before. Hahn was an unexpected winner for the best free-agent hitter this offseason, Cuban first baseman Jose Abreu.

Abreu, almost 27, signed for $68 million over six years.

On Thursday, Hahn, executive vice president Ken Williams and manager Robin Ventura met with Tanaka and his representatives, the first step toward making a run at the best free-agent pitcher, Tanaka, the 25-year-old sensation from Japan. Williams told the Sun-Times’ Michael

Sneed on Wednesday that he had traveled to Los Angeles on important Sox business, presumably for Tanaka.

More teams, a dozen for sure, are competing this time, though, and Tanaka will likely receive at least $100 million.

That is a ton of money for a pitcher, but the Sox wouldn’t feel strapped after shedding plenty from last year’s payroll by trading Jake Peavy and Alex Rios and giving Paul Konerko a large pay cut. Tanaka, like Abreu, fits Hahn’s stated goal for sustained, longterm success because he’s young, and he wouldn’t cost a first-round draft pick.

While the Sox have budgeted increased spending on the draft and international scouting and signings, there also is an extra $26 million in TV money coming every team’s way in shared revenue from MLB’s Central Fund.

After meeting with Tanaka, the Sox released a statement and said they would have no further comment on discussions until Tanaka makes a decision.

“The meeting was exploratory in nature,” Hahn said.

“It was an opportunity for

us to sit down with Masahiro and discuss how he potentially fits our vision ... for the next several seasons.”

While one major-league source with close ties to the Sox was skeptical Thursday about the Sox’ ability to outbid big spenders such as the Dodgers and Yankees, another major-league source can envision chairman Jerry Reinsdorf – who has said there is room in the budget – spending the money.

“They have been very quiet, but that could be a sign,’’ the source said. “They played possum a bit on Abreu. They should be in on this guy if they really like him – they have the money available. But he makes sense for a ton of clubs, so money will be a big factor.”

Tanaka, whose mastery of a split-finger fastball helped him compile a 24-0 record and 1.27 ERA in Japan last season, reportedly had meetings set with the Dodgers, Angels, Yankees, Diamondbacks, Cubs and Sox. The Blue Jays and Mariners, among others, are likely in play, too.

Rosary High School Sports Boosters will hold its 34th Annual Super Bowl Party at 3 p.m.

Feb. 2 at the Turf Room in North Aurora, 1033 Kilbery Lane (near Randall and Orchard).

The event will include miniraffles, a $5 raffle, a silent auction, the “Lotto” drawing, plenty of boards, and of course the ability to watch the big game on more than 25 flat screen TVs. The Lotto drawing is $50 a ticket and $12,000 will be awarded in cash prizes. Campton Hills boys v’ball completes inaugural season KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE The 1999 and 2000 boys’ teams finished their first season participating in the Midwest Developmental League and showed well for the club. The boys played clubs from Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois. The learning curve was tough, as the boys had to become skilled at competing at the highest levels in the region, within a short time span.

Even though the playing level was high, and the competition fierce, the emphasis was on player development throughout the season. Teams played to win, but not at the expense of teaching players the proper way of executing the game. Teams played out of the back, players connected multiple passes, the technical range of players was solid and relevant coaching points could be heard. Every club Campton Hills faced also

showed respect for the game with tremendous sportsmanship.

The club-based model of the NPL-MDL was instrumental in helping the players learn more techniques and improve skill sets throughout the year. By watching the other team’s matches, the players had the opportunity to learn more. The boys could observe players in their same position, with the exact same responsibilities. With both teams traveling together, the program strengthened the bonds between players on different teams and created a positive dynamic amongst all the players.

Campton Hills is looking forward to adding the older boys’ teams in MDL, for the rest of the winter and spring seasons. MDL will continue to strengthen players within the club, allowing boys to see how a player at 17 performs, along with providing them a path of where they can grow.

Illinois Heat, a club volleyball team located in North Aurora, has added Maggie O’Reilly (top picture) and Hailee Colby (bottom) to the 14U national club team. O’Reilly, an eighth-grade student at Holy Cross School, has played volleyball with Club Fusion as well as her school. Colby, an eighth-grade student at Rotolo Middle School, has played volleyball for two years at Rotolo Middle School and has been active in several camps. O’Reilly will be a middle blocker for Illinois Heat while Colby will be an outside hitter. The two participated in the club’s tryouts in October to earn their spots. Illinois Heat will compete against other 14U teams in tournaments that run through June.

Weather not the only thing chilling Batavia residents Wow, it just got a lot cooler in Batavia, and I’m not just referring to the weather. I was planning to write about how much we enjoyed our extended vacation from school – especially Monday, when the kids and I learned how to make snow by tossing boiling water into the insanely frigid air. Neato!

But then I woke up Thursday morning to news of comments reportedly made by our school district’s former superintendent that left me positively chilled.

The specter of a 13 percent tax-levy hike, unanimously passed by the Batavia School District 101 Board in December, inspired numerous pre-vote emails to the board from concerned citizens, including this one from apparent levy supporter and former Batavia school superintendent Dr. Jack Barshinger. Barshinger retired last June.

And, as you yourself say, did you really “often” employ these quotes when referring to us? Really? This is disheartening, to say the least.

Sadly, Barshinger’s aren’t the only unfortunate comments made by someone with former ties to the school board in advance of its decision.

Former school board member Kathy Roberts also engaged in name-calling: “These gadflies are not interested in the children of Batavia. They will never be satisfied until their school taxes are reduced to zero … .”

I don’t suppose Barshinger and Roberts ever imagined that their insulting comments would see the light of day. But they did, thanks to Sylvia Keppel, a Batavia resident and “Lower the Levy” organizer who unearthed them during her recent review of many emails – many of which, it turns out, were actually written by those opposing the levy – made available to her following her Freedom of Information Act request.

What we have here, among other things, is a beautiful illustration of that thing I’m constantly telling my kids –don’t commit to writing anything you wouldn’t be truly proud to see published in the newspaper or forwarded to your mother.

This isn’t about whether or not I agree or disagree with the levy. This is about the sad truth that these toxic attitudes, and this way of viewing and modeling how to be in what can, at times, be challenging relationships with teachers, staff and residents – whether the issue is curriculum conundrums, taxes or turf – has a way of trickling down to our educators and, eventually, to our children.

Name-calling? Really? Think what happens in the board room has no bearing on the playground? Think again.

Too cool for school, indeed.

British actor Ralph Fiennes talks Dickens, ‘The Invisible Woman’

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now British actor Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes had long established himself in front of the camera before stepping behind it. Known for tackling a wide variety of parts – from Amon Goeth in “Schindler’s List” to Lenny Nero in “Strange Days,” from Justin Quayle in “The Constant Gardener” to Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter series – Fiennes went the director-actor route in 2011 in a screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Coriolanus.”

Now he’s at it again, both directing and starring in “The Invisible Woman,” the based-on-fact story of a lengthy affair between the married author Charles Dickens (Fiennes) and the much-younger actress Nelly Ternan (Felicity Jones).

Fiennes, 51, spoke about acting and directing and Dickens in Toronto.

Ed Symkus: Not many people knew this woman existed. How did you find out about her?

Ralph Fiennes: I first came across this as a screenplay by Abi Morgan, which was based on a book by Claire Tomalin, in its relatively early stages, and I became fascinated by the story. I was relatively ignorant of Dickens, and of this love affair. After Dickens’ death, Nelly married again, and the idea that someone keeps within themself the history and the markings of an intimate relationship – which they kept secret – was what moved me to make it.

ES: So, you hadn’t read Dickens before?

RF: I had read “Little Dorrit” and I had seen some Dickens films, but I hadn’t ever been on an English literature course, and I had never chosen to go through the canon of his work. I think maybe that was a plus, because I came to this open. I read Abi’s script and then Claire’s book, and became fascinated by him, and then I read some of the books that I thought were closer to the time that he was meeting Nelly.

ES: It’s fairly common for a director to see a script in its early development, but not so much for an actor. Did it help you as an actor?

RF: What is great is that as an actor I can attempt to read the dialogue with the writer – with Abi – and to start to play out the scenes and to test and to sort of feel where the scene is going. She was really into that. Sometimes directors will very much embrace a method to bring actors in to do exactly this, to let the actors improvise, to let the actors suggest changes in the writing and let things emerge.

ES: What does Ralph Fiennes the actor think of the director, and what does Ralph Fiennes the director think of the actor?

RF: Ralph Fiennes the actor is very difficult. He’s very moody, tempestuous, storms off the set (laughs). And Ralph Fiennes the director is also very difficult, and fractious (laughs again).

ES: What are your thoughts on Dickens now that you’ve done this film?

RF: I think it was difficult for Dickens to come to terms with what he was doing. I think it was difficult for both of them. As far as leaving his wife, I think he was possibly in denial about the level of cruelty, and it was difficult for Nelly

– how did she come to accept to be the mistress of Dickens? I think you can see within some of his books that he had huge extremes of emotion within him.

I think what we tend to perceive is the Christmas card Dickens – the smiling, jolly, family man, the father figure. But when you read about Dickens, or read his later novels, you can identify a man in anguish.

ES: How did you go about dealing with the sensationalism of the story?

RF: I think it was very important not to overly sensationalize it. I wanted to find the right balance in Dickens. I was wary of the quick leap to judgment that some people would make: “Oh, Dickens was a scoundrel!” I thought yes, maybe, but there’s a whole spectrum of Dickens. He was very loyal to his friends, incredibly generous, devoted to social causes where he really delivered on them, and he wrote these amazing books. And then at home he possibly was a difficult father figure.

But I wanted to try and indicate or suggest all of his sides.

Dear Abby: My husband and I are a young couple, married almost two years. He recently told me he isn’t happy with me anymore and that he may want to leave. He won’t tell me why.

He says he doesn’t know why.

It was a complete shock to me. He refuses to seek marriage counseling and has dealt with a lot of depression for which he won’t seek help, either. We have a child, and I am now pregnant again. It hasn’t changed his thoughts about leaving.

What should I do for myself and our children? What can I do to help my husband change his mind? Because your husband won’t see a counselor about your marriage or do anything about his depression, then YOU should. And when you do, start figuring out a “plan B” for how you will support your

The reason for your husband’s ambivalence will become apparent in time. You may love him deeply, but for your sake and that of your children, it’s important you stay calm and rational.

Dear Teen: Your parents probably push you because they want you to get a college education. Good grades, various activities and a talent for sports can make you a more attractive candidate.

There are ways to tell your parents to ease up without saying, “Get off my back.” Your message might be better received if you said to them what you wrote to me: “I know you want what’s best for me. I don’t want to disappoint you. But I’m a human being and I sometimes make mistakes. I love you, but the pressure is getting to me.”

It’s not hostile, and they may hear what you’re saying without becoming defensive.

Some viruses are resistant to anti-viral drugs Dear Doctor K: What is a virus?

And what makes viral illnesses so difficult to treat?

Dear Reader: Viruses are a very simple kind of germ. They are smaller and simpler than other common germs, such as bacteria and fungi. They cause illnesses ranging from mild – like the common cold – to potentially fatal. This includes diseases such as smallpox, influenza, Ebola and HIV. When viruses infect our cells, they take over a cell’s “machinery.” The cell can’t carry out its normal life-sustaining tasks.

Instead, the host cell becomes a virus-manufacturing plant, making viral parts that reassemble into whole viruses and infect other cells. Finally, the host cell dies.

(I’ve put an illustration showing how a virus takes over a host cell on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

You ask why viral infections can be so difficult to treat. Not all are. And there are different reasons why some are, indeed, hard to treat.

Many common viral infections get attacked and eliminated by our immune system. For many of these infections, like those that cause the common cold, we don’t actually have (or need) anti-viral drugs.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Other common infections can be eradicated by the immune system in some people, but not in others. In that latter group, anti-viral drugs can assist the immune system in winning the war and eradicating the virus.

The viruses that cause hepatitis B and C are examples.

Still other viral infections have tricks that make it impossible (currently) to eliminate them.

Neither our immune systems nor anti-viral drugs can get rid of them, and they remain with us for the rest of our lives. Sometimes they remain “asleep” in our bodies, causing no damage. Other times they periodically awaken and cause symptoms; a cold sore caused by a herpes virus is an example. Anti-viral medicines sometimes can keep them dormant, or make them go back to sleep.

Another reason that some viral illnesses are hard to treat is that sometimes it’s not the virus that makes us sick; it’s our immune system. Our immune system is like an army. When it attacks a virus, it uses lots of artillery.

Unfortunately, that artillery can also damage our own tissues. The symptoms from many viral infections are the “collateral damage” done to us by our own immune systems.

Finally, viruses reproduce so rapidly that they have plenty of opportunity to change their genetic stripes with each new generation. This allows them to develop resistance to whatever drugs or vaccines we throw at them.

Who is winning the war, we or our viruses? Over the past century we have eliminated or greatly reduced many viral illnesses through developing vaccines and anti-viral drugs. On the other hand, completely new viral infections have emerged, such as HIV. And the remarkable growth in global travel has made it easier for viral infections to spread.

So, I’m not sure if we’re winning the war. But I am sure of one thing: Without medical research, we would have little chance of winning. And in my opinion, we’re not spending enough on research.

We are both 19, high school graduates and we have good-paying jobs.

We love each other and will till the end of time.

There is only one concern. We are first cousins. His father and my father are brothers.

A lot of people are telling us that first cousins shouldn’t marry because children born out of this kind of marriage could be mentally disabled.

I’ve also heard that this isn’t true. Enlighten us, please. – Peggy, Ames, Iowa Dear Peggy: I checked with my personal physician and was told that the chances of your baby being mentally deficient are higher than normal, but still slim. If “normal” parents have a mentally deficient child once out of every 1,000 births, first cousins would have one chance out of every 900 births. Those are very favorable odds.

I’m popular, get good grades in school, have a perfect shape and I’m considered to be very good-looking. My only flaw is that I’m too short.

I’ve been told by modeling schools that models need to be at least 5 feet 8 inches tall. I’m not that tall and I’m through growing. Is there any other job in fashion that would be similar to modeling? – Ashleigh, Portland, Ore. Dear Ashleigh: This is a very popular question with the girls. Every week I get three or four inquiries about the requirements for being a model. I can understand why, because it is a glamorous job and pays extremely well for those lucky enough to reach the top.

Should parents be permitted to be chaperones at school-sponsored dances? – Paula, Richmond, Va. Dear Paula: No! Parents should be invited as guests to spend some time (20 minutes) to see for themselves what school dances are and how they are supervised.

The supervision of all school activities should be performed by credentialed school employees for legal reasons.

It wouldn’t be fair for a parent to be asked to break up a disturbance if one occurred or to make a decision on improper student behavior.

South was a tad cautious when he rebid two clubs, not three clubs. It is true that three would have been a slight overbid, but with such good clubs, it would have been acceptable.

It was normal for North to pass over two clubs. Over three clubs, though, he would have continued with three hearts, and South would have signed off in three no-trump with his spade stopper. Note that as the cards lie, three no-trump is unbeatable.

Even if West is psychic and leads a diamond, declarer can win on the board and play on hearts.

(And, yes, on another subject, some Wests would risk a takeout double over one club, hoping that if partner advances in diamonds, he has good length there.)

The defense against two clubs is instructive. When West leads his heart ace, East drops the seven, starting a high-low (echo) with his doubleton. West cashes the heart king, then leads the heart eight, his higher remaining heart being a suit-preference signal for spades. East ruffs and shifts to the spade queen.

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s assume South covers with his king. West wins with his ace and carefully cashes the spade 10. Now, with every sidesuit trick taken, West leads his last heart. When East ruffs with his club jack, it effects an uppercut. South overruffs, but now West collects the sixth defensive trick with his club 10.
