or the last couple of weeks, as I gathered some of my favorite photos of the year, I reminisced about some memorable moments captured by our company’s staff photographers, freelancers and myself.

I’m often asked what my favorite assignment was or what my favorite photo is. To me, it would be like choosing a favorite child.

(Or, in my case, a favorite niece or nephew.)

Every moment is different. And I love my photos for different reasons. Either it’s because it was a difficult moment, one in which I was just glad to get something that visually told the story. Or it was a supremely happy moment, one in which it brings back great memories for me and makes me smile.

Most of all, however, it’s usually a split-second moment. Such as the one where Geneva basketball player Loudon Vollbrecht got a hand to the face. Sometimes, I don’t even see things like this in real-time, only during the editing process.

LOCAL BRIEFS Singles club plans activities

ST. CHARLES – Open to singles aged 40 and older, the St. Charles Singles Club has planned events, listed on the club’s website at www.stcharlessinglesclub.com. St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina expects that in 2016, the first building in a new First Street development project will be completed and occupied by at least one tenant. The project broke ground in 2015.

St. Charles expects progress and new businesses in 2016 ST. CHARLES – For 2016, St. Charles should expect progress on key properties – such as the First Street development – and a host of new businesses, including those giving life to shuttered spaces, Mayor Ray Rogina said.

The city – which celebrated the groundbreaking of First Street’s third phase in September – expects that the site’s first building will be completed and occupied by ALE Solutions within the year, Rogina said.

Construction on the site’s second building also might begin, he said, noting progress on the downtown property was “a long time coming.”

City officials expect to hear more about the Prairie Center, proposed for the former St. Charles Mall site near Route 38 and Randall Road, Rogina said. He said a concept plan will be presented to the St. Charles Plan Commission and the Planning and Development Committee within the first two weeks of January.

“My goal is to get the property developed,” Rogina said.

As for Charlestowne Mall, he said, leasing continues to be a challenge, but an announcement might come about one of the outlots. That news will be the developer’s to share, Rogina said, predicting it will be a “pleasant surprise.”

He said other expectations for 2016 include these openings: Fox Valley Volkswagen,

KANEVILLE – Kaneville officials in 2016 plan to continue seeking and saving funds for outdoor improvements to the village, its leader said.

The village hopes to accumulate enough funds over the next few years to fix subdivision cul-de-sacs, Village President Pat Hill said.

With limited and uncertain revenues coming from the state, the village is in a savings mode, Hill said.

“We’re still working on getting a tornado siren,” she said.

More development, retail coming to Batavia BATAVIA – The city of Batavia will continue to see progress in various downtown projects, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said.

A proposed Dunkin’ Donuts location with a drive-thru window is among the developments. The owners of the Shell gas station at Houston Street and Route 31 in Batavia have submitted paperwork for the business to open on the property, Schielke said.

This includes embracing appropriate change within the downtown and the East State Street corridor, which will yield success both for commerce and community engagement, Burns said.

Burns said the city’s “marching orders” often are directives that come from the community.

“And our role is to carry those out as best we can, in the environment we currently face,” Burns said. “Most challenging will be how we continue to provide the service our community has come to expect, in light of the failure of our colleagues in Springfield to do their job.”

Other issues that are “percolating” will define the kind of community Geneva wants to become, consistent with the city’s long-term goals and opportunities for more housing in the downtown, Burns said.

Other areas to promote commercial and residential redevelopment are along the Fox River – namely the former Mill Race Inn property – as well as filling vacancies on Randall Road, such as the former Dominick’s store, he said.

“According to our downtown master plan, ideally we’d like to see a portion [of the Mill Race Inn] redevelopment provide for sales tax revenue,” Burns said. “And whether that is stand-alone or mixed-use development, we’d have to wait and see what Shodeen Inc. will submit for review.”

Excitement from upcoming North Aurora projects in 2016 NORTH AURORA – North Aurora residents won’t have long to wait in 2016 before seeing change.

Village President Dale Berman said the community will begin the new year with new, blue street signs. They are replacing the red street signs, which are not allowed by the state, he said, noting some were fading anyway.

The village entryway signs also are undergoing North Aurora a makeover, Ber- Mayor Dale man said. He said Berman North Aurora is in the design phase for the markers, which are placed at major entrances.

Berman said the new year also should bring various developments to North Aurora.

“We’ve got a lot going on,” he said.

Hardware – a brewpub that is

under construction at the northwest corner of Orchard Road and Oak Street – is expected to open in the spring, Berman said.

He also expects progress on a gated, 300-unit apartment community named the Springs at Orchard Road, Berman said. He said the complex is planned for a site near Hardware, at the northeast corner of Orchard Road and Oak Street.

Other upcoming developments include a hotel across from the North Aurora Auto Mall on Orchard Road – a building permit has been issued – and a 55-and-older community on the former Fox Valley Golf Course along Route 25, Berman said.

He described it as an “exciting” time in the village considering the economic downturn in 2008.

“It’s exciting now to see everything turn around,” Berman said. “It makes the job really fun when things are moving up.”

Also, Michels said, residents in the Settlers Ridge subdivision should see their streets improved after the Sugar Grove Village Board approved a settlement of more than $2.1 million to complete work that was to be done by a now-defunct corporation in the area. Last month, the village issued a news release stating that a lawsuit had been ongoing since 2010.

Michels said that there will be several roads that will be repaved and improved, including Denny Road and Bliss Road, thanks to a grant.

Campton Hills to seek more outreach CAMPTON HILLS – The focus for Campton Hills in 2016 will be for the village to have more community outreach and to get residents more involved, Village President Harry Blecker said.

“Our big thing is going to be community outreach,” Blecker said. “We want to get more people involved and promote the village more for our businesses.”

Toward that end, February will see a civilian police academy, and the Community Relations Committee is scheduling an outdoor festival, he said.

“One of the biggest things in our outreach is our Economic Development Committee is scheduling more after-hours get-togethers, to get more businesses involved,” Blecker said.

“Our business district – it’s a hidden gem. We want to get more businesses in there and promote the businesses that are there.”

While things might be quiet and more routine at the moment, Blecker said officials will use the time to work on strategic planning. This will involve prioritizing for both short-term and long-term issues.

“We are not just sitting there because things are qui-

et,” Blecker said. “We’re looking at [next year] and five years down the road.”

Another change he said officials hope to announce in February is a new website at www. villageofcamptonhills.org.

“We’re not ready to put it out there publicly yet, because we are still building it,” Blecker said. “It’s going to have a lot of good information, and it’s going to be a lot easier to navigate.”

Blecker said other local leaders make themselves available to their constituents in informal gatherings, and he

plans to do the same.

“I’m not sure when, but we’re going to start having ‘Coffee with the Mayor’ – or with the board of trustees,” Blecker said. “So on a Saturday morning, we can have people come over for coffee and bagels, and they can talk to us and tell us their feelings and what they think.”

“I’d do coffee and a bagel – and maybe we’ll have doughnuts, too,” Blecker said. “I’m planning on several of those next year.”

completion nears ELBURN – In 2016, Elburn will see the completion of a significant project, as well as a new home for one of the village’s most prominent businesses.

Also, an area of Route 47, just south of Keslinger Road, potentially could become the location for new businesses.

The modernization of the village’s Dave w a s t e w a t e r Anderson treatment plant is expected in the spring. Village President Dave Anderson said its completion “will be a real plus for the community.”

Anderson said it had been 40 years since Elburn last addressed the wastewater treatment facility.

“It’s time,” he said.

By February, Ream’s Meat Market is expected to be moved to its new location at 250 S. Main St., the former home of Papa G’s restaurant.

The new building will

be about three times bigger than its current location at 128 N. Main St. The land at 1001 S. Main St., once thought of as a potential new home for the Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s Natural Resources Department, instead likely will be the site of new businesses, Anderson said. The area is on the east side of Route 47, near Keslinger.

Also, Anderson said the village might have to address storm water in the older sections of town – the northwest and southeast quadrants.

In the March election, Elburn will seek a boost to its sales tax via a referendum. Officials have said the money would be intended to help pay for projects the village otherwise might not be able to afford because police pension funds are coming from the village’s general fund.

Also during the year, building can begin for Shodeen Inc.’s Elburn Station development.

Valley Lodge Tavern shuts its doors in St. Charles

The last day of business for the St. Charles location of Valley Lodge Tavern was Sunday, owner Bill Stavrou confirmed in a message Wednesday.

A sign seen Thursday morning on the front door of the tavern, at 109 W. Main St. in St. Charles, stated that the lodge is closed and thanked patrons for their business.

The tavern began serving customers on April 14. It had some success in Kane County, but it started to drain staffing and operational resources from the other Valley Lodge Tavern locations in Glenview and Wilmette, Stavrou said.

“It just made sense to do this,” he said of leaving St. Charles.

The Tavern’s St. Charles location previously was open as McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub, which closed April 4 after more than 16 years in business. Tavern investors bought the McNally’s site in

2014 and decided to test the strength of the Tavern brand by converting the pub into the Valley Lodge Tavern, Stavrou said.

The St. Charles tavern menu included fish, burgers, ribs, steaks, salads, beer, wine and more.

Stavrou said he has an ongoing business relationship with Maurice McNally, who has expressed interest in the 109 W. Main St. location.

Because of ongoing discussions, McNally said he could not yet talk in detail about the future of the site.

S T . C H A R L ES T O W NSHIP – The former St. Charles dean’s assistant accused of sexually assaulting a student is asking the court to let him use the “reasonable mistake of age” defense, according to Kane County court filings.

Christopher A. Lee, 30, is charged with four felony counts of criminal sexual assault and one count each of misdemeanor distribution of harmful material and misdemeanor obscenity. He pleaded not guilty in August.

Through his attorney, Lee has filed a motion asserting that denying him the mistakeof-age defense would be unconstitutional.

The filing listed hypothetical instances in which a mistake-of-age defense would be allowed, including sexual situations involving a 45-year-old and a 13-year-old and a person one day shy of turning 17 and a 9-year-old.

In Lee’s case, the charges stem from consensual sex with a student older than 17 but younger than 18, the motion states. It noted that 17 is the age of consent in Illinois.

“It is very important to note that Illinois, by statute, allows the mistake-of-age defense,” a filing states. “Since this de-

fense is allowed, it must not be arbitrarily and irrationally denied to defendant Lee.” The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office disagrees.

In court filings, it asserts that Lee’s position at St. Charles North High School precludes the mistaken age defense.

The defense is “trying to shift the attention to the idea that this is a crime based solely upon age while ignoring the remaining elements that the defendant was a person of trust, authority or supervision to the victim,” according to a filing by the state’s attorney’s office.

Lee was in his first year as a dean’s assistant at North and had been an assistant basketball coach for the last five seasons. He has since been fired.

“There is a distinct rational goal of the state of Illinois to prevent sexual exploitation of minors by persons who may be in a position of power and to protect them from any undue influence by those in power trying to use that position to engage in sexual conduct with these minors,” according to the state’s attorney’s filings.

A hearing on the matter is set for 11 a.m. Jan. 21 at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles Township before Judge Judith Brawka.

La Galerie to close, owners to retire

“We just figured it was a good way to spend the time together,” John Carlson said on Thursday.

The Carlsons still will be together this year, but in a warmer climate. They plan to close their business, La Galerie, 219 W. Main St., St. Charles, sometime in September and then move to Naples, Florida.

John Carlson hopes to sell many of the 7,000 paintings they have purchased over the years before retirement. The artwork is between 50 to 70 percent off until the business closes for good in September, John Carlson said.

Judie Carlson said she and her husband have enjoyed the art and the customers. The couple first opened La Gal-

erie in 1987 at the former St. Charles Mall site near Route 38 and Randall Road before moving to downtown St. Charles in 1994.

John Carlson said his wife is “100 percent the boss” in the gallery, but that he does lobby for and against purchasing art with her when necessary.

“We never take anything from consignment, we only buy,” John Carlson said. “We own everything that we have.”

The Carlsons do not plan to have a quiet retirement. Judie Carlson plans to take up a parttime job, and John Carlson will work on a couple new business ventures, including an online business with a friend and an art restoration service.

Two new laws mean bad news for people who believe that pouring an alcoholic drink or a cup of coffee is just too much work.

Senate Bill 67 made powdered alcohol illegal in Illinois. It joins 24 other states that have likewise banned it, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

People who want to buy powdered caffeine still are OK, provided they are adults. Senate Bill 9 limits it to people 18 years and older.

DUI

One new law cracks down on repeat offenders, while another gives the worst offenders a chance at regaining limited driving privileges.

One law, created by House Bill

3533, increases to five years the amount of time that a repeat DUI offender has to be on a restricted driving permit, and drive with a breath ignition interlock device, before he or she can apply to the Illinois Secretary of State’s office to get full driving privileges restored.

The law was inspired by the DUI arrest of a repeat offender who struck and killed a 17-year-old Wonder Lake girl in 2003. He had gotten his license back a year before his 2014 arrest.

Another law, created by House Bill 1446, allows drivers who have had their licenses permanently revoked after a fourth DUI conviction to obtain a restricted driving permit after five years if he or she demonstrates a minimum of three years of sobriety and has completed rehabilitative treatment. The offender’s car must be fitted with an interlock device.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Education funding at issue

To the Editor: The end of the year is a customary time to reflect upon what went right during the year and to make plans for improving what didn’t go so well.

Because I serve on a number of House education committees, I have been thinking about our educational system – from early childhood to college. I will be holding one of my Educational Advisory Council meetings later in January to review the year and invite you to participate in the discussion.

One of the first issues that comes to mind is state funding. While elementary and secondary schools received more state funding this year, colleges, universities and students with MAP grants have received no state funds since June.

There are increasing discussions in Springfield about a new K-12 funding formula based on student needs and an awakening to the value of investing in higher education for our state economy.

Schools across the state have transitioned to new learning standards, and our teachers have responded with significant effort and coordination. The standards set goals, but it is up to the classroom teacher to prepare the lesson plans to achieve them. Instruction includes more consistent guidance in problem-solving, reading and analysis.

The state also discontinued two traditional standardized tests and introduced the new computer-based Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test.

The move went smoothly in some districts, while others struggled with not enough computers and technical issues. Based on feedback, the test certainly needs improvements if it really is to become a reliable tool for student assessment and guidance for modifying instruction.

Another of the educational topics worth reviewing is preparation of our students for high school, college and career.

A number of community colleges have been working with high school faculty to better prepare students for college and have shifted to co-requisite and parallel remediation. Incorporation of a number of best practices helps more students progress toward a degree and finish in less time and cost.

Happy (what? really?) new year 2016 “Happy new year!”

This time of year, the salutation slips off the tongue like rain off a Cubs hat. However, I wonder if we overrate – or even understand – happiness. Does it wait at the end of our American dream like a pension check promising better days? Does it knock daily, questioning why we spend too much time on airplanes and in offices?

I’m no philosopher, but I like to play one in my column by asking questions I can’t answer. Or, rather, I do, but without scientific evidence. What can lab rats reveal about happiness?

Turns out, a lot. Harvard professor Daniel Gilbert, on “The Late Show,” offered Stephen Colbert ways to improve his happiness, naming first, “spending a little more time with people you love.” Other suggestions included reflecting on what you’re grateful for; taking care of your health; and making others happy.

In Gilbert’s book, “Stumbling on Happiness,” research shows everyone’s happiness differs because the feeling is totally subjective. We can’t assume what will make someone happy. The person with the gorgeous spouse, giant Christmas bonus, Hilton Head beach house and garage housing a Lexus sedan, two-seat-

Happiness is like taste: You can’t argue it, as in whether a joke is funny (such as saying “Donald Trump” in mixed company), or whether cooked spinach should be outlawed (without a liberal amount of butter and/or cream sauce). Only YOU know when you’re happy – even when you’re not aware of it.

Sound illogical? I agree. But writing this column, I’m absorbed in listening to the rhythm of the sentences; asking if one word sounds – or better clarifies an idea – better than another; and trying to pull disparate ideas together seamlessly, while totally unaware of how fast time is flying.

It’s what I love doing. Ministers,

priests, rabbis and swamis enjoy transcendence in prayer; athletes, when stepping onto the field or varnished gym floor, lose themselves in physical movement.

OK, if happiness can steal upon you unconsciously, can it – like a bad cold – also be contagious?

Recently, at Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo’s Christmas sound and light show, my family promenaded through animal houses and blinking light extravaganzas timed to 30-second Christmas carol snippets. The mood felt communal, euphoric, everyone tuned to the same seasonal joy.

Driving home, my son, Jay, said, “It’s so nice seeing so many people happy.” According to Gilbert, Jay couldn’t intuit the feelings of a crowd ages 9 months to 90. But did we feel good “oohing” and “ah-ing” along with everyone else? You bet; if it were a cold, we’d have caught it.

Happily.

‘A really successful year’ Karkos, of Batavia, shining in goal

By STEPHEN GORDON editorial@kcchronicle.com Aaron Karkos, a senior at Batavia, does not exactly strike you as the typical hockey goaltender type. At 5-foot-7 and less than 200 pounds, he does not typically strike fear in his opponents.

But don’t let that fool you.

With his Fox Valley Hawks team sporting an overall record of 13-4-2 Aaron and Karkos Karkos boasting a goals-against average of 2.42 and a save percentage of just more than 90 percent, things are going pretty well this year.

And people have started to notice.

Karkos, along with teammates Trevor Kurtzhals, Josh Gadow and Brian Bracken, will be participating in the Illinois Suburban Hockey League All-Star game at 8:15 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Darien Sportsplex.

“It’s been a really successful year for me so far,” Karkos said. “It’s been as successful a season as it was last season for me. It’s hard for me to put a finger on why it’s been so good this year. I think one thing was I have been doing better at poke-checking the puck away from opposing forwards, and I’ve been coming out of the net more to challenge shots more this season and also (advancing) the puck up the ice, as well.”

Karkos, who is in his third season at the varsity level for the Hawks – a club team combining players from both St. Charles schools, Batavia, Geneva and Kaneland – admits his offseason work was not as

“Two season ago, I played in a four-on-four league and it really helped me a lot,” he said. “This year, I only played sparingly and it was noticeable at the start of this season, and it has taken me a while to get to where I need to be physically. I do stand out as a goalie, I think, because I stand up more in the net.”

Karkos said some of his best games this season have been in losses, when the Hawks have played upper division teams such as the combined teams of the Kings from the ISHL North Central Division.

“We played them early in the season and lost, 6-0, to them,” Karkos said. “But I faced 50 shots and I was really

in a zone. It got to the point where I was just on such a roll making save after save. I can tell when I have had a good game versus a game where I will stop like 20 shots but let two get by me and then dwell on those two I gave up because I could have stopped them.”

During a typical game, Karkos said he makes so many ingame adjustments based on the pace of the game.

“I honestly cannot count the amount of little adjustments I have to make so I can see the puck, stop the puck, move the puck. And that’s before being able to make sure I can see the puck at all times,” he said.

Those hockey adjustments he makes during a game actually started when he was 6.

Karkos, who is the youngest of four children in his family, remembers trying to play as a defenseman, but told his mom he really wanted to play goalie and would not let go of that notion, then playing the position for the next 12 years.

Before a game, most players will blare hard rock music in the locker room, but that’s something Karkos really doesn’t want any part of.

“Yeah, I can’t listen to that,” he said. “I put my headphones on and listen to the Dave Matthews Band just to try to calm myself down before a game because I am so amped up to play.”

When not on the ice, Karkos enjoys playing the guitar or looking at college options such as Illinois State, where

he hopes to play club hockey for the Redbirds.

“Aaron plays a very old school style of goaltender,” Hawks assistant coach and goaltender coach Pete Garvey said. “Technically, his balance on the ice is outstanding.

What’s even better is that he gets in position so quickly to make that second and third save easily because of his great positioning in the net.”

“I think I am my own worst critic,” Karkos said. “I don’t think I have ever really loved anything else but hockey and playing goalie. I’ve had no regrets playing this sport and have loved every minute of playing on this team. People who don’t play for us are really missing out.”

Resilient Cadets embrace break Marmion recovers from loss, finishes 3rd in tournament

By CHRIS CASEY ccasey@shawmedia.com It would be easy for someone to look at the final score of Marmion’s Chuck Dayton Holiday Classic semifinal game against Geneva and say the Cadets did not play well by any stretch.

A 55-28 defeat was not a pretty stat line, and neither was the 20 percent shooting from coach Joe Currie’s Cadets. But Marmion’s coach said it wasn’t a lack of effort of taking bad shots.

“We just didn’t make shots,” Currie said of the loss to the Vikings. “Credit and hats off to Geneva for making us think about our shots,

but bottom line is you’re not going to win too many games shooting around 20 percent.

It’s just not going to happen.”

Currie said he challenged his team to forget about both that result and the way it shot with another game looming for third place against West Chicago. The Cadets flipped a switch.

Mick Sullivan, an all-tournament team performer, led the Cadets to a 25-point first quarter and finished with 17 points and eight rebounds in leading Marmion (8-6) to Wednesday’s 65-56 win – a result that finished closer than the game played out to be.

“The guys realized that there was still something to be salvaged from this tournament,” Currie said. “Third place was still on the line and the guys took that to heart.

Marmion finished 25 for 50 from the field, and held West Chicago to 19-of-69 shooting from the field, including a rough 7-for-41 effort from long range.

Currie also implemented something defensively that he felt made a difference.

With the Cadets facing their aforementioned fourth game in five days, a usual man-toman pressure attack turned into some zone play. It proved effective.

“The legs were just tired,” Currie said. “We like to get after people and pressure them all the time, but it was clear our legs were a bit tired. With the way Geneva shoots from the outside, we thought trying to play some zone (Tuesday) would probably not have been the best idea. (Wednesday), it worked out and the guys earned this finish.”

Hunter Weber added a team-high 18 points in the win Wednesday night, as well.

Those tired Cadet legs will get a week’s rest before Marmion is back in action against Chicago Catholic League foe DePaul Prep on Jan. 8.

by Emily Mueller and Lina Mikulionis.

Based on the beloved story

by L. Frank Baum, “The Wizard of Oz” follows the travels of the character Dorothy – from her home in Kansas, all the way down the yellow brick road to the Emerald City.

Featuring a cast and crew

of more than 50, the musical performed at St. Peter included songs such as “Over the Rainbow,” “If I Only Had a Brain,” and “We’re Off to See the Wizard.”

According to a new release, “The entire cast and crew shined with talent.”

Members of the cast included Kaitlyn Crowell (Dorothy), Aaron Beck (Scarecrow), Aden Morvice (Tin Man), Max Hallmann (Lion), Angelina Messina (Toto), Grace Jaeger (Wicked Witch), Karolina Schubert (Glinda), Blaise Fulco (Professor Marvel/Oz), Anna Morvice (Auntie Em) and Anthony Consentino (Uncle Henry).

During its annual holiday luncheon, the Batavia Women in Business group raised $1,400, which was donated equally to the Batavia Access Toy Drive and Batavia United Way’s Adopt A Family program.

The more than 100 attendees at the luncheon also filled multiple tables with toys for the toy drive and donated hundreds of dollars in gift cards, according to a news release.

Roy Bailey, director of the

Batavia Access Toy Drive, noted that 265 families were scheduled to “shop” for toys through the toy drive this year, states the release.

Melinda Kintz, executive director of Batavia United Way, said 85 families were sponsored through the Adopt A Family program. The nonprofit organization coordinates with Batavia School District 101 to ensure that those who need help the most are included, the release states.

The luncheon took place Dec. 8 at the Fox Valley Country Club in North Aurora.

But it’s not only older adults who run the risk of dehydration. And it’s not just a summertime problem. Working outside, exercising or just enjoying the sun in any season can speed up the loss of body water. Illness with fever, diarrhea or vomiting can lead to dehydration. Dr. Wallace: I’m a 16-yearold girl who has earned a bad reputation. I did a lot of things in the past I’m not proud of and I’m sorry for my “sins.” The problem is that all the kids at my school know about my past.

Girls avoid me like the plague and guys call me names or call me on the phone to ask me out for only one thing – sex.

I live with my mother who has been divorced twice and recently married her third husband. He seems all right, but he does have a drinking problem. I would like to move out of this town and get a fresh start. My grandmother is aware of my troubled past and has encouraged me to move in with her. They can be mended, but it takes much longer. I’m happy for you that you have begun this process. Doing so requires a great deal of courage even when most people are pulling for you. But when your whole school seems to be against you, the task can be formidable.

I don’t often recommend that a young person leave a parent and move away from home, but in your case I think this is best. With Mom’s third husband having a drinking problem, I don’t think you’ll get the support you need at home.

When you do leave, just make sure you keep in close contact with your mother. She needs you.

Dr. Wallace: I’ve got a huge problem. Joshua and I have been dating for over four months and everything was going just great.

He’s 16 and I’m 15. When his family decided to buy the house directly across the street from ours I was very surprised. They

moved in three weeks ago and already my dad and his dad got into a huge argument because his dad parked his camper on our side of the street directly in front of our house. It boiled over and then my mom and his mom got into an argument and it ended up with the two women swearing at each other.

To make matters worse, Joshua and I got into a huge argument last night because he was defending his parents and I was sticking up for mine. The argument ended when Joshua told me he never wanted to see me again. I assume that means our relationship has ended, all because he moved close to me and our parents couldn’t get along.

Dear Dr. K: I’m in my 80s. At my last checkup, my doctor emphasized how important it is to stay hydrated. Can you explain why?

Dear Reader: Drinking fluids is crucial to staying healthy and maintaining the function of every system in your body. That includes your heart, brain and muscles. Among other things, fluids carry nutrients to your cells. They flush urine and bowel movements, both of which contain body wastes, out of your body.

If you don’t drink enough fluids, you run the risk of dehydration.

This happens when your body loses too much water – through sweating, for example. Warning signs include weakness, low blood pressure, dizziness, confusion or urine that’s dark in color. Even minimal dehydration can reduce your physical and mental capabilities.

Your body is very good at keeping you from becoming dehydrated.

When the fluid in your body starts to get low, your kidneys make less urine (assuming your kidneys are healthy). However, in hot weather your body sweats – and you can lose a lot of fluid that way. The reason your body sweats is that the evaporation of the sweat from your skin cools the body.

Older adults like you are at particular risk of becoming dehydrated. That’s especially true during summer when it’s hotter and people perspire more.

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Julian Seifter, a kidney specialist and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.

He explained that older people don’t sense thirst as much as they did when they were younger. Or age may have weakened the ability of the kidneys to hang on to water. In particular, your heart, brain and kidneys are more vulnerable to the low blood pressure that often

Dear Readers: It’s 2016! A new year has arrived, bringing with it our chance for a new beginning.

Today is the day we have an opportunity to discard destructive old habits for healthy new ones, and with that in mind, I will share Dear Abby’s often-requested list of New Year’s Resolutions – which were adapted by my late mother, Pauline Phillips, from the original credo of Al-Anon: Just For Today: I will live through this day only. I will not brood about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. I will not set far-reaching goals or try to overcome all of my problems at once.

I know that I can do something for 24 hours that would overwhelm me if I had to keep it up for a lifetime.

Just For Today: I will be happy. I will not dwell on thoughts that depress me. If my mind fills with clouds, I will chase them away and fill it with sunshine.

Just For Today: I will accept what is. I will face reality. I will correct those things that I can correct and accept those I cannot.

Just For Today: I will improve my mind. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration. I will not be a mental loafer.

Just For Today: I will make a conscious effort to be agreeable. I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my path, and I’ll not speak ill of others. I will improve my appearance, speak softly, and not interrupt when someone else is talking.

Just for today, I will refrain from improving anybody but myself.

Just For Today: I will do something positive to improve my health. If I’m a smoker, I’ll quit. If I am overweight, I will eat healthfully – if only just for today. And not only that, I will get off the couch and take a brisk walk, even if it’s only around the block.

I hope all of my readers have a happy and healthy 2016.

To start the year, let’s look at the winner of last year’s Keri Klinger Memorial Declarer Play of the Year award from the International Bridge Press Association.

The deal arose during the final of the World Open Pairs in Sanya, China.

The declarer was Espen Lindqvist from Norway.

After West’s one-heart overcall and North’s two-diamond response, South’s four-club rebid was a splinter, probably with a void given that his partner’s single raise made a slam very unlikely.

Against five diamonds, West led the spade 10. When that held the trick, he continued with the spade queen.

What did declarer do?

Lindqvist won with his spade ace, ruffed a spade in the dummy, discarded the heart three on the club ace, ruffed a club with the diamond 10, and led his last spade. When West followed suit, South ruffed with the diamond queen.

Then he ran the diamond nine, ruffed another club (to leave West with only hearts), and cashed his last two trumps, the ace and king.

Everyone was down to three cards.

East had kept two hearts and the club king; dummy held the heart 10-six and club six; West retained the heart K-J-8; and South had the heart A-Q-9.

Now declarer led his heart queen and unblocked dummy’s 10. West took the trick but had to lead from his heart jack-eight into Lindqvist’s ace-nine.

That was a terrific performance, taking full benefit from West’s ill-advised overcall with a weak hand, opposite a passed partner, and vulnerable.
