Area residents can learn more about the Blanding’s turtle, which is an endangered species, during a program Tuesday at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Drive, St. Charles.

editorial@kcchronicle.com One doesn’t have to go on a safari across the plains of Africa or trek through the Amazonian rainforest to encounter an endangered species. There’s one right here in St. Charles, and its survival is in the hands of a dedicated team of ecologists from the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County and our own staff at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center in St. Charles.

With its sunshiney chin and yellow-specked shell, the Blanding’s turtle is a cunning creature, but its looks are far from what people envision when they hear the term “endangered species.”

“People think of endangered species as Bengal tigers or exotic animals that live in the jungle,” said Lauren Kulinski, nature programs supervisor for Hickory Knolls Discovery Center.

“But people don’t realize that we have a huge endangered species list right here in Illinois.”

And the Blanding’s turtle is a member of that list – a dubious honor, to be sure.

To find out what caused the turtle to achieve that distinction and learn how the park district is participating in its protection, interested parties are invited to attend a “Meet the Blanding’s ... Turtles” program from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

by Dan Thompson, ecologist with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County, to discuss the Blanding’s Turtle Recovery Project, a multi-agency approach designed to help protect and increase the population of Blanding’s turtles in the area.

tive and allow participants to gain a personal perspective on a concept that is usually spoken of in global terms.

“People do wonder how an area like ours could have conditions that cause a species to be endangered,” Kulinski said. The program will examine the roles that development, loss of wetlands and the turtle’s own physical characteristics play in its inclusion on the Illinois endangered species list.

Winter is a particularly good time to learn about the turtle’s physical needs, according to Kulinski. Like a lot of other animals at this time of year, the population of Blanding’s turtles at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center is going into hibernation, a process called “brumation” that is essential for resetting their biological clocks.

“The turtles need to do this every year in order to grow and develop and get to the point where they are mature enough to breed,” Kulinski said.

Breeding Blanding’s turtles is the goal of the recovery program, but it’s one that takes dedication to careful monitoring and requires patience for the process of time. Blanding’s

turtles reach maturity when they are anywhere from 11 to 13 years of age, according to Kulinski. The population of turtles currently housed at Hickory Knolls is still young, most of them only about 7 or 8 years old.

“Our facility is set up so that when the time comes, we’ll be ready for them. We have sand where we can bury the eggs and the forest preserve can retrieve them for incubation,” Kulinski said.

The park district has been honored by the Illinois Parks and Recreation Association for its efforts in working with the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County’s Blanding’s Turtle Recovery Project.

From creating a 500-gallon aquatic habitat complete with waterfalls and beaches to outreach education programs like the one scheduled for January, making people aware of the presence of an endangered species within their midst is a key element of the park district’s involvement with the Blanding’s turtle.

“Every year we work with the Blanding’s turtles is a learning experience, not only for our staff but for the public, as well,” Kulinski

said. “Offering a program at this time of year gives us an opportunity to explain what’s going on, why it’s important and what to look forward to come spring when the turtles emerge from brumation.”

90-DAY GLAUCOMA Most people are familiar with glaucoma’s well-earned reputation for being a “sneak thief of sight” due to the facts that symptoms usually go unnoticed and the disease progresses slowly.

However, there is a form of glaucoma that can occur quite suddenly among generally older individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or some other cardiovascular problem. “Neovascular glaucoma” is often referred to as “90-day glaucoma.” This is because it develops nearly 90 days after some type of ischemic vascular event in which tissue may be deprived of blood flow or suffer a slow perfusion of blood supply and oxygen that prompts uncontrolled blood-vessel growth. Immediate treatment is needed for this “secondary glaucoma” to reduce inner eye pressure and inflammation.

P.S. Unlike the much more common “openangle glaucoma,” “closed-angle glaucoma” can develop very quickly and necessitate immediate treatment.

2015: LOOKING AHEAD

Outdoor upgrades coming to Kaneville Road extension, bridge among Elburn highlights ELBURN – By the end of 2015, there will be a few significant changes in the village.

Looking ahead to the new year, Village President Dave Anderson said he expects the Anderson Road extension, which includes a bridge to go over the train tracks in town, to be completed.

Also, the renovation of the village’s wastewater treatment facility soon will begin.

Anderson also said the village has grant money to rejuvenate part of the downtown area on Route 47, fixing curbs and Dave sidewalks and Anderson adding some features. The Elburn and Countryside Fire Protection District’s new station on Route 38 should be completed during the year.

And, he said, “things are starting to move” in the building department, and there could be new developments in 2015.

Of the Anderson Road project, the village president said a lot of work has been completed. He is hopeful it could be ready to go by the Elburn Lions Club’s annual Elburn Days festival in August.

Of the wastewater treatment facility, village leaders have stressed the necessity of the modernization, which will cause residents’ water bills to increase in the next few years.

For instance, the price would rise to $5.17 per 100 cubic feet in May 2015, up from the current cost of $3.82 per 100 cubic feet.

Anderson said the project isn’t meant to increase capacity.

“I can’t emphasize enough that it has absolutely nothing to do with any growth,” he said.

KANEVILLE – The village of Kaneville will look better in 2015 thanks to a few projects in the works, Village President Pat Hill said.

Donated trees from Kaneville Tree Farms will be planted next year along Merrill Road, Hill said. The trees will replace rotting trees that were cut down on Merrill previously.

The village still plans to replace sidewalks on Main

Street and Harter Road to improve walkability in the area. The plan is to replace sidewalks on at least one side of the street for the time being, Hill said.

“We’re goPat Hill ing to continue to save, continue to put in for appropriations so we can get going on that,” Hill said.

Residents can expect to see a second village road sign be installed. Village officials are working with Duntemann Turf Farms to place the sign on or near the farm property, Hill said.

Hill said the village also is trying to pursue grant funding to install a tornado siren.

She has reached out to Elburn officials for guidance on the project.

Construction, grand openings set for SG SUGAR GROVE – Village President Sean Michels expects development will continue in 2015, as Sugar Grove has many projects in the works, he said.

“I think the residents are going to be pleasantly surprised by all of the activity going on around town,” he said.

Michels said it is too early to share everything the village is working on, but one development residents should notice is the 60-unit apartment building for those 55 and older.

The building, which is on Ga-

lena Boulevard west of Route 47, is in its infancy stage, Michels said, but it should start taking shape in the next year.

“They’re just working on the walls right Sean Michels now,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said, the groundbreaking of another project – a 70-unit assisted living facility at Division Drive and Park Avenue – is anticipated for April.

The year should bring the

completion of other projects, Michels said.

Construction on the American Heartland Bank at Wheeler Road and Route 47 should be completed by the summer or fall, he said, noting a grand opening would follow.

The Sugar Grove Park District is also expected to open a new park on the Harter Middle School property in the spring, Michels said. He said the park has three ballfields, a playground and a tennis court.

Rt. 31 plan, historic preservation in store for Geneva GENEVA – The new year will bring opportunities to the city of Geneva, both physical and policy-wise, Mayor Kevin Burns said.

“I think first and foremost, the most exciting and most newsworthy will be two new members of the City Council,” Burns said. “We have contested races in the 1st and 4th Wards.”

Pat Lenski and Tara Burghart filed for the open 1st Ward seat, and 1st Ward Alderman Chuck Brown is not seeking re-election. James Radecki and Eleanor Hamilton are running for the 4th Ward seat. Current 4th Ward Alderwoman Dorothy Flanagan is not seeking re-election.

Radecki previously served as alderman.

In terms of policy, Burns said a comprehensive review of the city’s historic preservation ordinance will begin shortly after the new Kevin Burns year gets underway. The review will encompass definitions and landmarking property.

Burns said it would start with the Historic Preservation Commission.

In terms of physical opportunities, Burns said the city can look forward to completion of the third tier of the commuter parking deck, as well as the

outcome of its policy decision for a Route 31 road “diet.”

The road “diet” would reduce four lanes of the state route to two lanes between Elizabeth Place and the entrance of Fabyan Forest Preserve south of Fargo Boulevard. It also would have center turning lanes and bicycle lanes.

Another project is a state project to repave Route 31 from First Street to the western edge of the city – and beyond, Burns said. Also next year, debate will center on infill construction, particularly the corner of Route 31 and Stevens Street, Burns said.

The proposed redevelopment of the Cetron property, at

7 Richards St., to apartments by the Marquette Company should bring a lot of attention, Burns said.

“It’s just in the concept stage now,” Burns said. “There will be discussion and debate at the plan commission.”

Burns said he also expects to see continued expansion at the Delnor/Candence/Northwestern campus.

The Geneva dam will come under discussion in the new year, Burns said.

“There are three options – remain as is, redesign or remove,” Burns said of the dam.

The completion of the Route 38 and Kautz Road improvements is something the region will look forward to in

2015, Burns said.

Expectations are high for redevelopment along the Fox River in Geneva, principally the Mill Race Inn. It was bought by local developer ShoDeen, but nothing has been proposed for it yet, Burns said.

Business opportunities in general should be expanding in the city in the new year, Burns said.

“Every year beckons new opportunities and Geneva is no different when individual retailers open shop or expand,” Burns said. “We are open for business and we look forward to doing business with those who want to invest in our community.”

Batavia to get more retail, street fixes N. Aurora Activity Center BATAVIA – The city in 2015 is poised to see more retail development along with the expansion of its downtown streetscape program.

Streetscape improvements are planned for Houston Street in downtown Batavia to make it more accessible to pedestrians and bicyclists. The city has made streetscape improvements to Wilson Street and River Street in recent years.

The project is in the planning stages, Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke said. When it will start has not been determined.

“You’re going to upset the apple cart for a while for community events down there if you are going to tear it up,” he said.

Schielke said he would like the project to be done in the spring rather than in the summer, when community events such as Windmill City Fest are held along Houston Street.

“If we are going to do something, I would like to see it start in March and have it done by July,” Schielke said.

Schielke said the city will see additional retail development next year, including construction of a new Walgreens store in downtown Batavia.

Houston Street between Water Street and Island Avenue in downtown Batavia is set to get streetscape improvements to make the street more pedestrian and bicycle friendly. into a 14,500-square-foot building with a drive-thru just east of East China Inn in the same shopping center. Plans are to demolish the former Swanson’s Hardware store/Prairie Path Cycles store at 122 W. Wilson St. to make way for the project.

“The city’s totally got everything approved, as far as I know,” Schielke said. “I’m optimistic that we should see some activity there in this coming year.”

The current Walgreens store will remain open until the new store is done, he said.

“The Walgreens that’s there now will stay there until the night before they open the new store,” Schielke said. “They will close the old one at 10 p.m. and reopen the new one the next morning at 8.”

In addition, the interior of Sam’s Club, at 501 N. Randall Road, will undergo a major upgrade next year, Schielke said.

The store will remain open during the work, he said.

Construction should start soon, he said.

“They didn’t want to start anything during the Christmas season,” Schielke said.

NORTH AURORA – The village will see plenty of activity in the new year, including the demolition of the North Aurora Activity Center.

Trustees recently approved a $355,739 contract with Site Recovery Services Inc. to demolish the building at 1 N. Lincolnway.

The North Aurora Activity Center has been closed since March because of structural damage.

Trustees in May decided the building was not worth saving.

Demolition of the building is expected to start in early February, after the removal of asbestos and some underground storage tanks, village officials have said.

“We’d like to see something else grow there in the future, but we don’t have any plans just yet,” North Aurora Village President Dale Berman said. “But we’re certainly seeking out something for development there that would be good for the community.”

The new year will bring new development to the village. Motels of North Aurora wants to build a four-story, 92-room Fairfield Marriott

Inn and Suites hotel on Orchard Road in North Aurora, across the street from the North Aurora Auto Mall.

The developer also owns a Holiday Inn off of Orchard Road in Aurora.

Berman said there are plans to reopen the North AuroDale Berman ra Inn along Route 31, near Interstate 88.

“That’s owned by the Bank of China, and they’ve been working away at refurbishing it,” Berman said.

In addition, discussions about removing the dam in North Aurora will continue in 2015.

Village officials are studying whether to remove the dam near North Aurora Village Hall as a way to improve the quality of the Fox River.

“I think the board is pretty much in favor of the idea, but we’re not going to commit to anything until we have a study done to see what the impact is going to be on the entire area,” Berman said.

ST. CHARLES – Several proposed and in-progress projects can keep St. Charles a lively city in 2015, said its mayor, Ray Rogina.

City officials have been reviewing the latest Phase 3 proposal of the First Street redevelopment. The city’s Plan Commission on Dec. 16 recommended the plan for approval.

It includes three mixed-use buildings and a parking deck, Rogina said.

The plan covers the portion of the First Street site located south of the planned East Plaza and is generally located in the previously planned building footprint locations, according to a city staff report on the project. The plan is subject to City Council approval, Rogina said.

Another project that might go before the council again this year is an updated concept plan for the proposed Lexington Club subdivision. The plan was changed to include all single-family homes, and a council committee in December gave the developer some feedback about lowering the density on the site, Rogina said.

Rogina predicts that 2015 will continue the trend of new businesses establishing themselves in St. Charles. The first

CAMPTON HILLS – The new year in Campton Hills will see the finalization and rewriting of the village’s subdivision and zoning ordinance, Village President Patsy Smith said.

The process actually started in the fall and is expected to take a year, Smith said. The process is being paid for by a technical assistance grant provided by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, she said.

“We started by doing our own research and stakeholder meeting,” Smith said. “There will be public hearings. It’s probably going to be finished

sometime in the fall of 2015.”

Smith said village officials will continue their work on creating a final version of the village’s personnel manual.

Officials have Patsy Smith been working on that for more than a year. And there is a code of conduct in the works, she said.

“I’m hopeful our board will adopt a code of conduct before the end of my term,” Smith said.

Local chiropractor put on probation Charged with not properly evaluating, prescribing drugs

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com NORTH AURORA – The license of a North Aurora chiropractic physician has been placed on indefinite probation for a minimum of two years by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation following allegations that he failed to properly evaluate and prescribe medications, including controlled substances.

The department this week announced the action against Robert Boer, owner and president of Fox Valley Physician Services, at 23 N. Lincolnway, North Aurora. Under the consent order, Boer was fined $10,000, and his physician assistant license has been placed on indefinite probation for a minimum of two years.

In addition, his controlled substance license is suspended for 90 days starting today.

The department charged that Boer failed to properly evaluate and prescribe medications, including controlled substances, and to properly document the course of the treatment of one of his patients.

While Boer is on probation, he is prohibited from ordering, storing, prescribing and administrating ketamine to any patient of his practice, according to the order. In addition, he is required to hire practice monitors who will review the

charts of patients and submit independent quarterly reports to the department.

He is also required to complete additional continuing medical education credits related to addiction medicine and pharmacology.

Boer said the case stems from a 2009 complaint filed against him. At the time, he said the office was upgrading its record-keeping from paper charts to electronic medical records.

“There were records missing that I know we did,” he said. “It’s our standard to do the paperwork that they’re saying weren’t in the records.

We were in the middle of this transfer, and somehow some of those records were misplaced. We’ve always tried to stay on the best practice side of things. If they [Department of Financial and Professional Regulation] took a case from today, there would not be the same outcome. There would be no issues.”

Boer agreed to the conditions of the consent order.

“I really appreciate the fact that the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation is working hard to make things safer for patients, to make it harder for patients to abuse medications and to give providers tighter state regulations to work with, which really protect the provider as well,” Boer said. “Our office in 2014 probably ended up discharging somewhere between 40 and 60 patients for repeated abuse. It’s unfortunate that they won’t go and get the help [they need] from an addiction specialist.”

New sheriff: ‘I will unroll my game plan’

By BRENDA SCHORY bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – Kane County Sheriff Donald Kramer said he will announce leadership changes at a news conference at 11 a.m. Monday, in the office’s lobby, at 37W755 Route 38, St. Charles Township.

“It will be an open event,” Kramer said. “I will unroll my game plan to name my direc-

tors and reveal my organizational plan [that] I originally put it in place months and months ago.”

Kramer said while his opponent in the November election, Lt. Willie Mayes, had a 100-day plan, Kramer is offering a reorganization in his first 30 days. This will be followed in the next 60 days to work with his personnel about “what they want to do and what the issues are.”

As promised during his campaign, Kramer said he has made changes and reassigned some lieutenants to the patrol division, as well as having lieutenants on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the jail.

By ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Batavia resident Ron Rechenmacher on Wednesday dropped out of the 6th Ward race on the Batavia City Council to concentrate on a run for the Batavia School Board.

Rechenmacher had filed nominating petitions to run both for the Batavia School Board and for the 6th Ward on the Batavia City Council. Michael Russotto is now the sole candidate for the 6th Ward seat.

“I have a greater potential to help the community,” Rechenmacher said, in talking about his decision.

Because both Rechenmacher and Russotto had filed nominating petitions at the same time, a lottery was scheduled for Wednesday to determine ballot position. Rechenmacher withdrew from the 6th Ward race before the lottery was held.

Rechenmacher lost last year in a three-way race for the 6th Ward.

He is one of eight candidates running for three seats on the Batavia School Board in April.

Police: STC man fled two-car crash

Marco A. Perez-Velasco, 27, of the 1800 block of Covington Court, St. Charles, was charged Dec. 21 with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury – a felony – driving without insurance, driving without a valid license

According to police reports, Perez-Velasco was driving a 2005 Hyundai Sonata south in the 300 block of North RanMarco dall Road on A. Perezthe inside lane.

Velasco A 22-year-old Montgomery woman was driving a 2015 Saturn Ion south in the outside lane.

As traffic slowed, Perez-Velasco’s car struck the rear of

the woman’s car, according to police reports.

Perez-Velasco drove around her car on the shoulder, turned left on Wiliamsburg Avenue, then right on Bedford Lane, leaving the car at Bedford and Andover lane, according to reports. He left on foot, but police caught up with him while he was walking on Pepper Valley Drive and Deerfield Way. He told police he fled because he had no driver’s license, according to reports.

The woman was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva with neck injuries, according to police reports.

New Year’s really is best for making resolutions Bloomberg News A new year is here – a time for resolving to eat less, exercise more, work harder, give more, get your financial situation in order, make a long-delayed life change. Why do we make such resolutions?

The simplest explanation is that our highest aspirations for ourselves often conflict with our daily desires.

Resolutions are designed to give our aspirations the upper hand.

Valuable evidence in this regard comes from Hengchen Dai, Katherine L. Milkman and Jason Riis of the Wharton School, who investigated what they call “the fresh start effect.” At certain salient times – a new year, a new month, a birthday, a holiday – people really do refocus their thinking and even reorient their conduct.

weight. But when, exactly, do they think about dieting?

Using Google searches, Dai and his colleagues found that people look up the word “diet” a lot more at the beginning of the week, month and year. Such temporal landmarks – mere accidents of the calendar – turn out to have a much bigger effect on people’s searches than important news events do, such as reports of the successful trial of a diet pill.

Why do temporal landmarks matter so much? First, they provide a clear opportunity to step back from daily life and reflect. But there is a second factor. Dai and his coauthors contend that temporal landmarks open up new “mental accounts” that enable us to separate the past from the future. We make a sharp distinction between our past self (who ate too much and failed to exercise, or stuck with unrewarding

work or a bad relationship) and our current self (who has turned over a new leaf).

People’s behavior often stems from their sense of their own identity, and big changes happen more easily when they can convince themselves that their 2015 self is on a whole new path.

But how can we ensure that our resolutions actually stick? Behavioral economists have three answers: Make them easy and automatic; make them a matter of habit; and make them fun. A resolution is more likely to work if it is concrete and can be translated into a simple routine.

I can now officially say it: Happy 2015! Release the giant dropping ball, mass of glittery confetti and obnoxious noisemakers. The year that never seemed to arrive has now shown up on all of our doorsteps.

Come to think of it, for me, 2015 is going to be an enormous milestone. Not only will I turn 18 years old this year, but I also will graduate high school and begin college.

Wow, I can clearly remember as early as elementary school, how my peers and I were referred to as “The Class of 2015.” See, as a young, silly kid in 2005, this year seemed so foreign, but fast-forward 10 years and this is it. It’s here.

I’m fully ready to make this year spectacular. Even though it’s going to take me a month to finally stop dating my papers as “2014,” I promise you all, I will live up to my word.

Luckily, I have the perfect way to recall every tiny, pleasant occasion during the year. I have this method to document every moment of delight that I experience. Starting in 2013, I began a “mission” to build a memory jar. Sadly, I didn’t have a jar when I started, so I created a memory box.

Every New Year’s Day, I take out an empty box that will be filled up that year with tiny pieces of folded paper that contain written memories on them. Throughout my daily life, if there ever is a moment that makes me smile, no matter how minor it might be, I scribble it down on a piece of paper, date it, fold it up and place it inside my memory box. Although it’s obvious bigger memories won’t be forgotten, it often is the tiny instants of joy in life that most of us often forget. It’s times

During the year, I never read any message inside the box. On New Year’s Eve, I dump out the box of memories and read each slip of paper containing a thrilling remembrance. I often overlook just how much I’ve done throughout the year until I read these notes. This box allows me to look back at each message and grin again, just as I did when I originally wrote it.

Whether the note pertains to one person or a whole event, it simply is amusing to relive the happiness that’s written down a second time.

Therefore, no matter how old you are, I suggest you all try and craft your own memory jar (or box) for 2015. You can even make an entire family memory jar if so desired.

Whether someone gives you a nice compliment while at work or if you had a great day at the beach, jot it down on a piece of paper and toss it into the jar.

Hopefully, 2015 will be the start of something new for all of you. Whether that’s crafting a memory jar or sticking to a tricky resolution, I hope this year brings you all immense pleasure, good health and fortune.

MAKING THEM LAUGH Area natives part of Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Geneva native Bianca Shaw and St. Charles native Chris Fair will do their best to make people laugh next month as part of the 14th annual Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival.

The festival will run Thursday, Jan. 8, to Thursday, Jan. 15, at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave., Chicago. Shaw, a 2012 Geneva High School graduate, is part of the group Beer Bottle Aristotle. And Fair, a 2003 St. Charles East High School graduate, will bring his endeavor, The Laser Comedy Show, to the festival.

Kane County Chronicle reporter Eric Schelkopf had the chance to talk to both of them about the upcoming festival.

Q-and-A with Bianca Shaw Eric Schelkopf: You are going to be doing the skit “Batteries Not Included: A Sketch Revue for Throwback Toy Fans.” Have you been rehearsing?

Bianca Shaw: Yes. That was actually the first show we did last fall and winter. It’s an incredible show about Furbies and all the games people know and love from the ’90s.

Schelkopf: For people who come out to the show, what should they expect?

Shaw: Actually, what I like about our show is that I think it’s very creative and nostalgic. Maybe it’s because I’m a ’90s baby, but I find there’s something really magical about the ’90s in particular.

I just think the ’90s just got it right with toys and games and Furbies. I will say that the Furby is pretty creepy and awesome in the show.

Schelkopf: So, for you and your group to be included in the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival, that must be quite the honor for you?

Shaw: Oh, my goodness. This has been a

Schelkopf: Were there any teachers at Geneva High School that kind of inspired you to do what you are doing now?

Shaw: Lori Dowd – she was the drama director and drama club teacher. She helped me so much with my acting career and really helped me find my place in high school and on the stage. And she’s an incredible inspiration of mine.

Schelkopf: You have a pretty long resume, including being part of Moves Dance Studio in North Aurora.

Shaw: I danced with them from 2006 until 2008 or 2009. I was in their dance company.

Eric Schelkopf: You founded the Laser Comedy Show. Is some of what you do improvisation or do you have set ideas?

Chris Fair: For a normal show, I usually go out and I do mostly improvisation. But for the Chicago Sketch Festival, I take a show that I really like and I rewrite it.

Schelkopf: What did you get out of that

Schelkopf: So, what are you going to do for the

Schelkopf: What are the challenges? I guess you have to be a pretty good artist, for one thing.

Fair: Yeah. Writing backwards is a challenge. I learned it on the fly.

Some letters are hard to do backwards.

It’s actually just kind of funny when I get it wrong.

Schelkopf: It seems like the audience is pretty receptive to what you are doing. Why do you like doing what you do?

Fair: I like it because it gives me a chance to access all of my creative output.

I’ve been drawing since I was 3 years old, and I had been doing stand-up [comedy] for a number of years.

With this, I’m doing monologues, but at the same time, I’m drawing scenery and making every single scene in my laser show. I’m making my own little movie.

An Italian wine that’s worth the six-year wait Sagrantino and the region of Umbria, Italy, are excellent companions.

Sagrantino is an age-worthy Italian red variety that can be elegant and complex.

Official DOCG protocol, a system designed to classify Italian wines, requires it to be aged four years prior to its release.

Yet Tenute Lunelli has an extended time frame. In search of quality, its wine is released after six years. The Tenuta Castelbuono, Montefalco Rosso 2009 proved it’s worth the wait.

Winemaker spotlight Alessandro Lunelli built a reputation on Ferrari sparkling wines in Trentino. The Lunelli family bought property in Montefalco in 2001 and took a huge step in 2012 with the creation of a state-of-the art winery.

Shaped like a giant tortoise sell, the winery demonstrates their commitment to the region. While it is a stunning architectural masterpiece, the quality of the facility shows in the Tenuta Castelbuono, Montefalco Rosso 2009 ($35).

It’s a wine that is still young, but loaded with potential. The longer it was in the glass, the more it evolved. There are blackberry, plum and rustic licorice notes and tannins that have potential to mellow over

wines.

“After years of practicing organic techniques in the vineyards of the Tenute Lunelli, this year in Umbria we had the first harvest, which was officially certified organic,” he said.

“Being winemakers for three generations, our first focus is the quality of wines,” said Alessandro Lunelli, the winery’s family principal. “In order to achieve a collection of excellent products, all the steps from the vineyards to table have to be performed with topnotch expertise using innovative facilities and techniques.

In 2008, the underground part of the new winery, dedicated to the refining and aging process, was completed and ready to produce outstanding wines.

This winery was conceived to efficiently and optimally operate all the wine production processes to enhance the true characteristics of the Sagrantino and Rosso di Montefalco wines.

“Agreeing with Mario Soldati saying ‘wine is the poetry of the earth,’ we decided to create for our Sagrantino a very unique and poetic home: the Carapace. This sculpture-winery, designed by Arnaldo Pomodoro, was inaugurated in 2012. The Carapace is the world’s first sculpture where people live and work. It is a

When Lunelli describes the Umbrian countryside, he does so in romantic terms. The region’s unique location and geography is a perfect marriage enhanced by the family’s commitment to organic farming.

“Umbria is the only region in the center/south of Italy that does not border the sea, a unique position that makes it charming and magical,” Lunelli said. “The weather is rather peculiar for its latitude, with cold winters and very hot summers. In this region one can find harsh and hidden landscapes with a rich but difficult soil, which can produce outstanding and strong Sagrantino and Sangiovese red

On the palate there are clove, cinnamon and pretty warm spices. The tannins are racy, and a stream of minerality adds to a lingering finish of dark fruit and plums.

• Alto Moncayo, Veraton, Garnacha 2010 ($27.99): Another impressive vintage for a brilliant producer of Spanish grenache.

A delicate blackberry, raspberry and strawberry mix on the mid-palate are amped up by espresso and dark chocolate on a finish with muscular, dry tannins.

But he kind of felt like he was going to. “You’re used to having a fan right there, a foot away from the glass, and you use your peripheral vision, and you can’t quite judge it,” Bickell said. “You think the boards are closer than they really are.”

By JEFF DeGRAW editorial@kcchronicle.com PONTIAC – In a game of runs, streaks, scoring and no scoring, the St. Charles North boys basketball team came up one point short Wednesday in losing to Benet Academy, 41-40, in the semifinals of the 84th annual Pontiac Holiday Tournament.

With one minute remaining, North senior Jake Ludwig hit two free throws to give the North Stars a 40-38 lead.

Benet’s Colin Bonnett make a conventional three-point play, hitting the free throw with 42 seconds left to make the score 41-40 in favor of Benet.

North then held the ball looking for the game-winning shot. Ludwig drove from the top of the key, put up a shot with 4 seconds remaining.

The shot hit off the rim and Benet grabbed the final rebound.

“We got what we wanted at the end, finished with contact, it just didn’t go down,” North Stars coach Tom Poulin said.

“We played very well and I’m very proud of these kids.

Jake (Ludwig) had a great game. He got what he wanted at the end. He has had a very good tournament and has shown he can hold his own against some of the best in the state.”

North’s Pontiac run ended Wednesday night with a 62-55 loss to West Aurora in the third-place game. Ludwig scored 21 points for North (8-6), which closed the gap during the second half after the Blackhawks took a 32-20 halftime lead. Mikey Schroeder added 11 points for North in the game.

Against Benet, Ludwig scored 15 points to pace the North Stars, who were making their first semifinal appearance in the prestigious tournament since participating in 2011.

Jack Callaghan nailed a 3-pointer, and Ludwig made a jumper to end the quarter down 11-7.

The second quarter saw the North Stars play that defense Poulin talked about, limiting the Redwings to four field goals and nine points.

Offensively, four North Stars scored, in hitting for 22 points and taking that 29-20 halftime lead.

Neither team scored in

the first four minutes of the third quarter. Benet then put together a 9-2 run over the last half of the quarter to pull with two, 31-29, entering the final quarter.

“We can’t have a quarter like that third quarter for us. That was unacceptable to only score two points,” Poulin said.

“But that was one heck of a basketball game. Back and forth most of this one, I’m sure it was fun to watch. Overall, we played fantastic on the defensive end. They are a very

good team but we hung right with them.”

For the game, North shot 37 percent from the field, including a 6-for-16 performance from the 3-point line. The North Stars outrebounded the Redwings, 24-21. There were only 14 turnovers in the game with North having eight.

Hammer ended with eight points and five rebounds and Callaghan chipped in seven points.

Bonnett lead Benet with 19 points and Dan Sobolewski added 13.

NOTEWORTHY More the merrier for Geneva The font size on page 6 of the East Aurora Holiday Tournament program shrinks noticeably for the Geneva roster compared to the other teams listed.

I’ve been always of the mindset if there’s a kid we feel can help the program, I would rather have him in a uniform, being in practice, working hard than not.

“It’s nice we’re able to keep this many guys. So far it’s worked out for us. It’s helped us weather some injuries and still keep some continuity in our practices, some competitiveness to it.”

Ralston recalled one year when he coached at Grant when he had 20 players on his team, but acknowledged this year’s bench is among the largest of his coaching career.

“I think it’s rare that you keep this many, but I think part of it was that we had kids who were juniors that we think can be competitive players next year,” Ralston said. “If they’re a good basketball player and they can help us, I want to keep them around. We’ll be honest with them and tell them you’ve got to buy into a role this

year and live with it and there’s nothing guaranteed in the future, but if you want to be part of the program … we want you to be part of the program.”

Fortunately for Geneva’s deep pool of reserves, the Vikings project to win enough games in lopsided fashion that there should be a decent amount of playing time to go around.

Ralston said the team is operating well with the expanded roster.

“I have to give my assistants, Scott Hennig and Rob Wicinski, a tremendous amount of credit,” Ralston said. “They make sure we don’t just have guys stand out and watch and be observers of our practice. They do a great job of making sure if a guy’s been out three or four reps, OK, you guys jump in, you guys get out. They do a phenomenal job of handling that.”

Biancalana said. “Until they go through it, (that’s when) you kind of process, ‘OK, this is what coach means.’ ” The loss was only DeKalb’s second of the season, and the other teams heading to the Geneva Regional – Geneva, St. Charles North and Batavia – also are above .500.

“Truth be told, that regional may have four out of the top five teams in the entire sectional, and we’re all stuck in the same regional,” Biancalana said. “So, I mean, it’s going to be a dogfight.”

probably one of our top pitchers now.’ ” Working to earn a spot isn’t new for Caliri. It’s a mentality she said she experienced at North when having to fight her way onto the varsity team.

“At North, I wasn’t on the varsity team until I was a senior, so I’m kind of used to trying to earn my spot,” she said.

“That’s kind of the big thing for them is you have to earn your spot and show what you can do.

And I’ve always tried to do that.

You have to show your talents, and you can’t just expect to get what you think you deserve.”

This offseason has been about trying to get better ahead of her junior year. She said she has a statistical goal of trying to get her ERA under 2.00. And perhaps she might have a new weapon with which to do that.

“I’ve definitely been pitching a lot during this winter break and trying to work on my rise ball, which I don’t usually throw a lot. That’s probably my least favorite pitch, but I’m trying to work on it more so maybe I can use it in the season.”

Working with that chip on her shoulder has worked well for Caliri up to this point. To do even better than before, she’ll have to forget about just how great things have gone and try to earn her spot all over again.

It’s said pitchers need to have short memories.

It’s usually not said about good stuff. But it’s exactly that – the good stuff – that Shannon Caliri is trying to forget.

Caliri, a junior pitcher on the softball team at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as well as a former St. Charles North North Star, had a great 2014 season. She went 14-5 with a 3.48 ERA for the Stritch Wolves, striking out 69 batters and earning all-conference honors.

But if she’s going to do it again in 2015, she needs to approach the season like she did the last, when she was just trying to prove she belonged in a featured role.

“I think going in I’m going to try to keep getting better and have the mindset that I didn’t have such a great season,” Caliri said. “I know I did have a pretty good season last year, but I always want to achieve more.

So just got to act, basically, the same as last season and try to do my best.”

Caliri said the big difference between her freshman season and her breakout sophomore season was just getting over the nerves of being a first-time college student. Being away from home and family meant it wasn’t exactly like the softball she played for much of her life.

Her cheering section was smaller. But the desire to show her coach what she could do meant harder work and better results.

“I think getting over nerves was probably a lot of it,” she said. “And overcoming the fact that I think my coach thought I was maybe more of our thirdstring pitcher. But I wanted to show what I could do, so by the end of my sophomore year, she actually told me, ‘You’re

Accorsi will help Bears – if they let him We had spoken a few times on the telephone, but I first met Ernie Accorsi in person in a cemetery somewhere in Saddlebrook, New Jersey.

It was New Year’s Eve, 2002, two days after the death of Joel Buchsbaum on the morning of the final Sunday of the NFL regular season.

Joel is a legend in the industry, the greatest independent talent evaluator ever, and was a trusted resource to scores of NFL executives until his passing.

Joel did all of his work over 24 years at Pro Football Weekly. He was an only child, a true eccentric and a bit of a recluse who left only his mother, Fran, behind.

In addition to a valued co-worker, Joel was like a brother to me, and Fran had almost no one else, a cousin or three, so I flew to the Buchsbaum home in Brooklyn and rode with Fran in the limo to

the cemetery that New Year’s Eve day.

I always knew Joel was well-connected, but I had no idea how well-connected until I got out of that limo.

We were somewhere off the beaten path in Jersey, and the ride had taken forever.

It was a graveside funeral and there were maybe a dozen to 15 or 16 friends and relatives there. As I walked with Fran to the grave, I noticed four men standing together about 30 feet or so back from the gravesite and the rest of the mourners.

As I focused on them, I realized it was Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli from the New England Patriots, Joel Bussert, director of player personnel for the NFL, and Accorsi.

Until that moment they had all been voices on the phone, so I made my way over to introduce myself and thank them for being there for Fran.

qualified to find an excellent GM and head coach for the Bears, he is a special individual who treats everyone with respect and is as loyal and honorable as anyone you ever will meet.

All of his GM jobs were with family ownership groups – the Irsays, Modells and Maras – so he is perfectly suited to understand the McCaskey family dynamic and work with it effectively.

The only way this relationship is likely to fail is if George McCaskey allows Ted Phillips to make the final recommendations and decisions, or if he insists on doing it himself.

The Bears will succeed with these hires if Accorsi is allowed to make it happen.

Reports: Bears reach out to 3 assistants for coaching vacancy

On Wednesday, the NFL Network reported the Bears will interview Seahawks defen-

sive coordinator Dan Quinn on Friday. Quinn, who has run the Seattle defense for the past two seasons after Gus Bradley left to accept the head coaching job in Jacksonville, is reportedly also set to meet with the 49ers, Jets and Falcons, according to media reports.

On Tuesday, the Bears requested permission to interview Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase and Car-

dinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles for the coaching vacancy, according to multiple reports.

Like Quinn, both assistants are widely expected to be popular choices among teams searching for new coaches.

According to reports, the 49ers and Falcons both have requested to speak with Gase, who has been with the Broncos for the past six seasons.

Gase has been the offensive coordinator in Denver for the past two years after working as the Broncos’ quarterbacks coach for two seasons (2011-12) and as receivers coach the two previous seasons before that.

Because the Broncos have a first-round bye in the playoffs, Gase would be available for interviews Friday and Saturday of this week, according to NFL rules applying to the availabil-

ity of assistant coaches under contract.

Bowles, on the other hand, could not interview until next week with the Cardinals playing in this weekend’s NFC wildcard game against Carolina. On Tuesday, the Arizona Republic reported every team in need of a coach – including the Bears, 49ers, Falcons, Jets and Raiders – has contacted the Cardinals seeking to interview Bowles.

Diagnosing RA requires ruling out other diseases Dear Doctor K: My doctor suspects I have rheumatoid arthritis, but she wants to test me for several other disorders, including lupus and gout. Why? Dear Reader: Several other diseases can cause symptoms and joint changes that are similar to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), including lupus and gout. That’s probably why your doctor is ordering the tests. She suspects you have RA, but she won’t know for sure unless she rules out these other diseases.

RA is an autoimmune disease. The body’s immune system attacks healthy tissue, primarily the tissue lining the joints. This causes swelling, pain, redness and stiffness in the joints. RA can affect other tissues throughout the body as well.

Accurately diagnosing RA, especially in the early stages, can be difficult. A physical exam, your symptoms, blood tests and imaging tests can all help. But before finalizing the diagnosis, your doctor may want to rule out other possibilities, including: • Lupus, an inflammatory

The joints involved in lupus often are the same ones affected in RA. • Scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that causes skin to thicken, tighten and look shiny. Some people have rheumatoid-like arthritis; others have a combination of arthritis and tightening of the tendons. People with scleroderma have certain antibodies in the blood that can be detected with a blood test.

• Sjogren’s syndrome, also an autoimmune disease. Immune system cells tend to attack the tear and saliva glands, causing dry eyes and dry mouth. The disease may also cause joint pain and swelling that mimics RA. • Gout. This form of arthritis develops after tiny crystals of uric acid accumulate in joints,

causing the joints to become swollen, red and very painful. It really hurts: I speak from experience as a doctor and a patient.

• Pseudogout, similar to gout, but results from deposits of certain kinds of crystals (made of calcium pyrophosphate) in joints.

Long-standing pseudogout can resemble RA. Joint fluid may be examined under a microscope to verify the presence of calcium crystals. Blood tests may also be needed.

• Osteoarthritis. The joint pain of osteoarthritis can be similar to that caused by RA. However, there are significant differences between other symptoms and the causes of the two conditions.

In my experience, a diagnosis of RA is usually pretty straightforward. But before leaping to that diagnosis, a doctor should do the testing required to look for other causes.

Mom needs professional help Dr. Wallace: My mom and I used to be really close, but everything changed six months ago. My father was killed in an automobile accident and my mother has become a different person. Although I miss my father very much and have some bad days, I try very hard to act normal most of the time.

But now my mother seems to have fallen apart. She has really become withdrawn and she has even quit her part-time job. She never goes out of the house anymore, not even to the store or our own backyard. She doesn’t even act like a mother any more. If I am hungry I have to make my own meals and if we run out of food she has me go to the store. She just gives me the money and tells me to buy whatever I want to eat, and she barely eats.

I’m 17 and the only child and I don’t know what to do. I wish all of my readers a very happy and healthy 2015.

Each year the International Bridge Press Association gives awards for excellence in various categories. The personality of last year was Patrick Huang from Chinese Taipei.

He first represented his country internationally at the senior level at age 15, in the Far East Championships. That was a record until beaten by 14-year-old Agustin Madala, who played for Argentina in the 2001 South American Championships.

Huang also led Chinese Taipei to the final of the most prestigious event of all, the Bermuda Bowl World Team Championship, in 1969 and 1970.

Huang is one of the best and most-liked players of all time.

The diagramed deal occurred during a world individual championship, and Huang was the only player to find the right defense.

South was in four spades. West led the diamond queen. What did Huang (East) do?

At all of the nine tables, South was in spades, five times in game and four times in a partscore.

At eight tables, East took the first trick with his diamond ace and returned a diamond.

The declarers won with their king and played three rounds of clubs. In a moment, South ruffed a club in the dummy and took 10 tricks: five spades, one heart, one diamond, two clubs and that club ruff.

Huang, anticipating this, took the first trick and shifted to a trump.

When declarer conceded a club trick, Huang led his second spade to kill the ruff.

South was held to nine tricks, giving Huang and his partner a cold top.

Dear Monty: We are selling our home with an experienced agent. Several occurrences have us questioning the agent’s value; missed or late for appointments, pricing advice refuted by a professional appraiser and more. We have read and been told only to deal with an experienced agent, that we shouldn’t let new agents “practice on us.” Do you agree with this assessment? – Kevin and Maggie D. Dear Kevin and Maggie D.: This is one of the real estate industry’s most prevalent myths. The notion that experienced real estate agents are the only choice for the consumer is just wrong, yet many “experts” hold and promote this mistaken belief.

Another reason the myth persists is that “experienced” agents often are the culprits for spreading this word.

Almost anyone can gain a license to practice real estate. The real estate industry has low barriers to entry; minimal education and testing requirements, extreme fragmentation and low entry point costs.

To receive a real estate license, most states require

between 50 and 80 hours of pre-license training and testing. Post licensing, licensees are subject to state required training and also voluntary training opportunities. THE WASHINGTON POST Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams, joined Washington Post staff writer Jura Koncius recently for an online chat.

Here is an edited excerpt.

Q. Is it really a smart investment to paint kitchen cabinets, or just bite the bullet and replace them?

I like the look but wonder whether, after painting and then replacing countertops, will the paint finish really last? What specific paint do you recommend for this?

A. If your cabinets are still in good shape and you like the style, then painting is a very viable option.

The most important thing is proper preparation of the surface and using a product that dries very hard.

I’m ashamed to admit that the walls have had only white primer on them for years as I’ve been struggling to find the “perfect” color to bring the walls to life. I went to a model home and loved the paint color, which was Sherwin-Williams’ Cottage Cream, a soft yellow with a hint of beige. However, that house had a ton of natural light. Will that color work in my dark room? My furniture is light cherry, with tan carpet.

I like the wood, but I do feel it can look a little dated. I never see trim done in natural oak these days. Since there are so many trees, the inside of the house often doesn’t get much light. The house is about 1,000 square feet, and I’d like to go with a light paint color throughout former job that can meet or exceed the standards for real estate training.

A. Wool Skein is a great color, but it can have a green hint to it, so be sure you like that tone.

You also could try Softer Tan or Moderate White, both neutral and natural with a little less green.

I always suggest painting a sample first, either on the wall or on a separate board.

With the potential to be warm or cool, light or dark, gray has replaced beige and off-white as the new neutral color in home decor.

The 1980s are back again: Dhurries are in

“Flat-weave rugs were popular in the mid-century and used by people such as the Eameses [Charles and Ray] and [Le] Corbusier,” said Laura Schneider, a spokeswoman for 1stdibs. “Now that that type of furniture is very much in fashion, these rugs are coming back into fashion, too.”

Anna Matthews, a designer based in Washington, said she thinks dhurries are a great way to add color and vibrancy to a home.

“To incorporate the smaller shapes of vintage dhurries, I like them layered over a sisal rug,” Matthews said. “This trick works wonders in a casual foyer or in a living room under a coffee table.”

In the 1980s, dhurrie rugs from India, with their bright colors, geometric designs and sturdy flat weaves, were all the rage.

In 1983, one of the first things my husband and I selected for our new apartment in Washington was a $499 red and white 9-by-12 foot dhurrie rug from the Kellogg Collection. I wish I still owned it.

Dhurries sort of disappeared in the 1990s (I gave mine away), but they’re back.

Today, affordably priced dhurries are showing up at retailers including West Elm and Anthropologie, bringing this versatile, reversible floor covering to a new generation.

“Dhurries are wonderful rugs and look beautiful in many settings,” said Pam Green, owner of the home decor store Kellogg Collection, which recently brought dhurries back into the inventory of its four stores.

Dhurries, which have been woven for hundreds of years, are the reason that Green opened her original Kellogg store in Washington in 1982.

She had seen dhurries featured in design magazines such as House Beautiful, and she found the look both fresh and classic.

Yet she couldn’t find one for sale in the nation’s capital.

She traveled to India and started importing them herself.

“Our customers were really taken with their great patterns and colors, including many pastels,” Green said.

Eventually the market became flooded and she discontinued them. But Green said the simpler prints and stripes of today’s dhurries (I like the quatrefoils) have a more casual look that resonates with today’s lifestyles.

“People are buying them for dens and bedrooms, and our younger customers are using them all over the house,” she said.

Finding a quality mattress Whatever degree of firmness you like, you want your mattress to be top quality. Look for higher density of nontoxic foams and dual innerspring construction, which prevents sagging.

In the case of memory foam mattresses, look for higher weight and density and nontoxic foams. Focus only on a

memory foam mattress that allows for the most efficient air circulation within the mattress. Memory foam mattresses are a rising choice with consumers, as they offer the elimination of pressure points or discomfort that can contribute to the “tossing and turning at night” to find a comfortable sleep position. A well-handcrafted memory foam mattress also eliminates “motion transfer,” the annoying transfer of motion from one side of the bed to the other that can come from sleeping next to a restless sleeper.

Also look for coil-on-coil construction. The lower coil unit should offer a connected, hourglass-shaped, steel support base while the top coil unit features an individually wrapped, pocketed coil system that contours and responds to your body, eliminating most motion transfer.

As for where to get a good mattress, a study by the Research Triangle Institute may help. It found many people feel “rushed” by in-store salespeople.

As a result, online mattress purchasing is on the rise.

If you go that route, look for a mattress that’s delivered and set up in your home. A boxed compressed

mattress may not recover to full size and, while some manufacturers fold mattresses for home delivery, a high-quality mattress should not be able to be rolled up. Make sure the manufacturer uses top-quality foams and that the company is mandated to follow proper guidelines. Nonmandated foams from other countries can contain dangerous carcinogens, linked to a variety of health concerns.
