The start of something new Weekly papers to hit reader mailboxes Thursday

Have you heard the news?

In late March, the Kane County Chronicle announced that it will be converting to a weekly format in print, beginning April 14.

That day, subscribers to the Chronicle will receive the new weekly newspaper in their mailboxes.

Members of the Kane County Chronicle team are looking forward to the new weekly papers hitting readers’ homes. The papers are going to be super thick and loaded with information about what will be happening during the week ahead.

In addition, the Kane County Magazine will be inserted into the papers once a month, offering readers even more information about local shopping, dining and entertainment.

We know this will be a big change for regular subscribers to the Chronicle, but we are confident that community members will embrace the new product. A weekly newspaper – with a strong, daily online presence – suits the lifestyles of an ever-growing number of people who are more technology-inclined and often busy with family, work and other obligations.

In addition, Shaw Media – the company that owns the Chronicle – has closed on its purchase of the Elburn Herald and Sugar Grove Herald weekly newspapers.

ST. CHARLES – Literacy Volunteers

Fox Valley is seeking volunteers to help Tri-Cities adults learn English.

A four-session tutor training workshop will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 12, 14, 19, and 21 at the St. Charles Municipal Center, 2 E. Main St., St. Charles. Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley provides texts, study material, and training so that anyone can be a tutor. Staff will help tutors develop teaching skills, craft curriculum, and gain exposure to teaching English to one adult learner at a time.

‘I think we need to put on the brakes’ Geneva budget battle to continue at special meeting

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen are expected to vote on the city’s fiscal year 2016-17 $91 million budget at a special City Council meeting Monday – but not until after they continue hashing out their differences.

The special meeting will take place after the end of the regular 7 p.m.

Committee of the Whole meeting.

The proposed spending plan is 1 percent less than what was budgeted the previous year, Mayor Kevin Burns said.

City staff responded to budget challenges by keeping operating budgets close to zero increases, continuing a hiring freeze and not providing education reimbursement, among other efforts, budget documents state.

Still, cost-cutting has dominated the budget discussion the past several meetings, with 5th Ward Alderman

Tom Simonian taking a lead role in challenging rising costs.

Simonian advocated reopening union contracts to get concessions on salaries and benefits. Burns had countered that his comments were “grounds for a hostile work environment.”

While Burns and 1st Ward Alderman Mike Bruno read portions of letters from city employees feeling the brunt of Simonian’s comments, Simonian responded with a written apology, as well as letters he received from constituents supporting his efforts.

Resident Terry Flanagan wrote that the city’s budget has been growing, while the tax base is shrinking.

“Have we created a hostile work environment? I don’t think so,” Flanagan wrote. “We have, however, created an expensive one and growing more expensive every year. I think we need to put on the brakes. ...The fact that the budget is balanced is cold

comfort when we are paying more for electric, sewer and water, trash pickup, and taxes.”

Flanagan is the husband of former 4th Ward Alderman Dorothy Flanagan.

Resident Dick Graff, also agreeing with Simonian, wrote, “It is time for reform and change.”

“The unsustainable pensions, contracts and expenses one day will devour us if we don’t change how things are done now,” Graff wrote. “We can’t tax ourselves into continued solvency, as some would choose, such as [a] sales tax hike and restaurant tax, etc.”

Earlier this week, aldermen voted 7-3 to defund the position of assistant city administrator/director of administrator services as a cost-savings measure in the new budget. First Ward Aldermen Tara Burghart and Bruno, and 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra voted no.

Assistant City Administrator Stephanie Dawkins will become the city administrator June 13. The city’s

online notice seeking her replacement states the salary range is from $93,225 to $132,688, depending on experience.

Aldermen also voted, 6-4, to remove the 2 percent restaurant tax – called the places for eating tax – from the new budget.

Fourth Ward Alderman Ron Singer, Burghart, Bruno and Maladra voted no.

Aldermen said they would prefer a fall referendum seeking to raise the city’s sales tax by a half-percent.

Dawkins warned that the loss of $300,000 anticipated from the restaurant tax has to be made up somewhere else or the budget is not balanced.

Aldermen said if voters do not approve, they would revisit the restaurant tax and amend the budget.

“The diversity of ideas with respect to the fiscal year 2016-17 budget are always welcome,” Burns said. “I hope that we can tamp down the division that has percolated these last few weeks and return to focusing on the goals and objectives that the community expects of us.”

‘IT’S A LOT HARDER THAN I THOUGHT’ Assisted living facility offers daily ballet for residents

bschory@shawmedia.com BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – Nine ballet students lined up to begin the next exercise, as their instructor told them to face her and be ready.

“Arms to the side, here we go – to the front and close, side and close, back and close and down and front,” Nanette Falcone said as her students followed her prompts to a recording of “The Skater’s Waltz.”

Welcome to GreenFields of Geneva, an assisted living facility in Blackberry Township in the Mill Creek subdivision near Geneva. Falcone, a former dance instructor to children, now teaches senior residents at GreenFields the moves in a weekly class, in addition to her duties as a community relations coordinator.

Though most students said they never took ballet before, the classes help keep them limber. The half-hour ballet sessions alternate with other forms of dance and movement, every day, senior fitness specialist Kristin O’Connor said.

“This is a part of our fitness program,” O’Connor said. “We do different styles of dance.”

Those include “fun moves” from Broadway shows, Irish jigs and country line dancing.

Extending their feet recently, students pointed their toes, tapped the floor, then followed Falcone’s directions to aim front and back, then to face the other way and repeat.

Vivian Hileman, 78, said she had never taken ballet before.

“I think it’s great – it’s a lot of stretching,” Hileman said. “But I’m also kind of a klutz. … The hardest part is balance.”

Carolyn Lemaire, 82, said this was her first time for ballet.

“Why? Because I hadn’t done it before,” Lemaire said.

Matt Meyer, a retired Church of the Brethren pastor, said he was taking the class for exercise and “all these women,” prompting his classmates to laugh.

Blanche Allen, 89, said she once danced in a ballet performance at a Moose convention in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1912.

“It was a thing our mothers made us do,” Allen said of taking ballet as a girl. “I do this [class] because of Kristin.”

O’Connor said Allen has been in her dance classes for two years, even doing Zumba – a type of dance workout – wearing bell skirts “and doing a lot of shaking.”

Helen Lyons, 86, said she never did ballet before.

“It’s a lot harder than I thought it would be,” Lyons said. “But it’s fun.”

Donna Wenhart, 78, said she had taken tap dancing as a child, but never ballet.

“I take this class because it’s a fun way to stay healthy,” Wenhart said.

“We have fun. We laugh. We don’t know we’re exercising.”

Kay Lovett, 78, also did not take ballet before, but was participating for the exercise. Lovett is a former Geneva Park District Board member and has a park named after her.

“It’s another form of exercise to keep the body moving and the mind going – the coordination and balance,” Lovett said. “We have different classes every day of the week. One day we do balance, another day … we do tai chi

movements.”

Barb Greenwald, 86, said the hardest part is following directions as to where to point which foot.

“But it’s fun … a good class,” Gre-

Then Falcone corrected her, saying: “It’s never too late to become a dancer.”

ST. CHARLES – A new Tri City Health Partnership initiative that targets patients with chronic diseases has gotten a $35,000 boost from the CVS Health Foundation.

The partnership, at 318 Walnut St. in St. Charles, provides free health care to low-income, uninsured individuals in central Kane County.

The grant will help it fund a variety of components of its Coordinated Chronic Care Initiative, including medical supplies, medications, educational materials and postage, Executive Director Shannon Watson wrote in an email.

“Access to quality medical care is fundamental for at-risk populations, such as those who are low-income and are without any health care coverage,” she wrote.

“The generous CVS Health Foundation grant will help TCHP continue to fulfill our mission of providing quality health care in an environment of mutual respect to members of the community without the ability to pay for services.”

Tri City Health Partnership was one of 46 free clinics and community health centers that received a grant, which was awarded as part of the CVS Health Foundation’s multi-year, $5 million commitment to address the need for more acces-

Although the initiative officially began Jan. 1, Watson wrote, patients with chronic diseases were identified in 2015.

She wrote that initial activities focused on improving education and encouraging healthy lifestyles.

About 41 percent of the partnership’s patients have a chronic disease, and many have diabetes and hypertension, Watson wrote.

She said that unmanaged or poorly controlled chronic diseases can lead to negative long-term complications, and people with an unmanaged chronic disease use emergency rooms at higher rates when manifestations of their disease require acute intervention.

The Coordinated Chronic Care Initiative should teach patients to better manage their illness, Watson wrote.

“This, in turn, should reduce emergency room visits and unplanned hospital stays while greatly improving health outcomes and quality of life for patients,” she wrote.

Klara Heather Anderson, 46, of London, England, died suddenly on Jan. 27, 2016.

She was born Nov. 27, 1969, in Red Bud, IL the daughter of Fred and Carol (nee Hawkinson) Anderson. She graduated from Batavia High School in 1987, Waubonsee Community College in 1990, and Northern Illinois University in 1994. In 2011, she received a Master of Science Degree from Queen Mary University of London. Heather dedicated her professional career to community/public health with an emphasis on sexually transmitted infections. She worked at Community Response in Oak Park, IL for seven years before moving to London in 2001. She then worked for the National Health Service until her death.

She is survived by her mother, Carol of Batavia, IL; two brothers, Thomas (Lizett) Anderson of DeKalb, IL, Andrew (Gretchen) Anderson of Evanston, IL; and six nieces and nephews Nathalia, Isabella, Paul, Axia, Olen, and Winston. She was beloved by her aunts, uncles, and cousins. She also enjoyed the companionship of scores of friends on both sides of the pond.

She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents, Oliver and Nancy Anderson and Clifford and Viola Hawkinson.

ST. CHARLES – Signal work is expected to affect traffic Tuesday at Dean Street and Randall Road in St. Charles.

According to a news release, the work – which includes the removal and replacement of traffic signal mast arms – requires closing Dean Street from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

There will be no access to Randall Road from Dean Street, the release stated.

Traffic on Randall Road will be allowed to continue through the intersection without stopping during the work period, the release states. It noted northbound traffic will only be allowed to access eastbound Dean Street from the right turn lane.

Southbound traffic will not be able

to access Dean Street, the release stated.

Motorists should use North 15th Street, Peck Road and Route 64 as alternate routes for east-west travel, according to the release.

In addition to the street closure, the release stated, temporary lane closures along Randall Road will be required.

Drivers should watch for flaggers and workers while traveling through

the construction zone, the release stated. It indicated motorists should expect delays and increased travel times.

The new traffic signals will include a flashing yellow left turn arrow, which will allow motorists to turn left after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians.

The superpowers of the mourning dove A few weeks ago at Hickory Knolls, we held a program called “SuperHeroes of Nature.” We looked at how real-life turtles’ talents compare to those of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, how the special skills of spiders stack up against Spiderman’s superpowers, and how bats’ ability to echolocate rivals any aspect of Batman’s genius intellect.

But today, looking back, I realize there’s a local animal we could have included in the program, but plumb forgot.

Mourning doves.

Surprising, right? I mean, when you consider all the hundreds of bird species that could possibly show up in our area, and then think about potential superpowers, would doves even make the list?

Peregrine falcons would, for sure.

They can dive after prey at speeds of more than 200 mph.

Woodpeckers would, too. They pound their heads against trees at a force 1,000 times that of gravity, and not suffer even a hint of brain damage.

I’m sure bald eagles would be listed as well, if for no other reason than they are big and majestic, and

But doves?

Quiet and unassuming, these birds often are associated more with peace than with battles of superhero proportions.

In fact, if a conflict were to arise with any animal other than their own species, these guys would probably lose. Big time.

Years ago when I worked at Red Oak Nature Center in North Aurora, we maintained a large platform bird feeder behind the center. Cardinals, chickadees and nuthatches were regular visitors, but it was the mourning doves that came out in droves.

On any given day we’d see doves feeding inside the feeder, doves basking on its roof, and doves gleaning seeds that had fallen to the ground below.

Their body temperatures measured 115 degrees F – higher than their normal 106 degrees F, but still within a range considered tolerable.

Given access to water – which doves can drink in prodigious quantities by sucking and swallowing, as opposed to scooping and swallowing like most other birds – doves can stay cooler, for longer, and with much less effort.

As our climate changes and global temperatures rise, knowledge of which species can withstand high temperatures, and how, will become increasingly important.

All would be well until a hawk flew by. Then, startled by the predator, most of the doves would take off in a rush of whistling, flapping wings.

Invariably though, one would remain behind.

Maybe it was too intent on preening, or otherwise not paying attention.

Maybe it held still on purpose, a tactic doves sometimes use when trying to camouflage as a means of avoiding detection.

Whatever its reasoning, it would disappear in a puff of feathers.

Hawk: 1, Dove: 0.

Time and again we’d say, whoops, that was the one that didn’t get the memo.

But, believe it or not, doves do have some amazing superpowers.

Their strong leg muscles allow them to push off and launch rapidly, while their pointed wings – shaped much like those of the falcons referenced above – allow them to attain

flight speeds of 55 mph.

Not quite faster than a speeding bullet, but impressive nonetheless.

Doves also have the ability to withstand high temperatures. Not fire-hot, like The Human Torch, but still considerably hotter than what we, and many other species, consider comfortable.

Avian biologists in the Sonoran Desert, where summertime temperatures routinely top 100 degrees Fahrenheit, recently compared the heat tolerance traits of mourning doves vs. Gambel’s quail, a common desert species.

Using special chambers, the researchers gradually increased the air temperature surrounding the birds from a comfortable 86 degrees F to a stifling 140 degrees F. While the quail got fidgety and started panting, the doves remained calm and collected. Amazing! But how do they do it?

The panting that the quail resorted to comes at a high metabolic price, and actually produces its own heat. The doves, by contrast, rely on a more passive means of cooling – allowing water to evaporate across

For blacks and Hispanics, a drop in the uninsured rate

Even as the leading GOP presidential candidates continue to pledge to obliterate Obamacare, and even as Congressional Republicans continue to promise an alternative to the law that may never, ever materialize, Gallup finds that the uninsured rate has plummeted yet again, to six points below where it was when Obamacare first took effect.

Crucially, two of the groups that have experienced the largest drop in the uninsured rate are blacks and Hispanics.

Among blacks, the uninsured rate has dropped 9.5 percentage points, and among Hispanics, it has dropped 10.4 points. So here’s a question: Could this be playing some kind of role in the argument between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders over the future of Obamacare – and, by extension, in the broader argument between Clinton and Sanders over how successful the Obama years have been, and what should come next?

The question of how to achieve universal health care has been central to that broader argument. Sanders tweeted Thursday that Obamacare has fallen well short of what needs to be accomplished: “29 million Americans have no health insurance and even more are underinsured with high co-payments and deductibles. That’s an embarrassment.”

Sanders says that Obamacare (which he voted for) is a real achievement, but that we need to do better, arguing that we should transition to single payer in order to achieve the security of true universal health care and avoid the problems that continue to plague the current system.

Clinton has agreed that we need to get to universal health care, but says the system can’t withstand another epic war that

would uproot our health care system right now, and that building incrementally on Obamacare is the way to move toward universal coverage (though she’s been vague on how she’d accomplish that).

Clinton has tended to perform better – sometimes a lot better – among African-Americans than Sanders has, and she’s also won Latinos in states like Texas and Florida (though Sanders has proven surprisingly competitive elsewhere among them).

Nonwhites could play a key role in upcoming primaries in places like New York and California.

Polls have also shown that large percentages of nonwhites think Clinton, not Sanders, is the candidate who would best bring “needed change” to Washington, suggesting the possibility that nonwhites are more in sync with Clinton’s vision of incremental change than with Sanders’s more revolutionary promises.

As it happens, nonwhites, and particularly African-Americans, are not as keen on universal health care as are Democrats overall. A recent CBS News poll found that Democrats favor a single payer system by 62-29. But the CBS polling team tells me that African-Americans favor it only by 48-39 (Latinos are higher at 59-34).

Given the success of Obamacare in lowering the uninsured among African-Americans in particular – and given Clinton’s scaled down vow to build upon it, as opposed to Sanders’s call for replacing it with a new single payer system – you have to wonder whether this is playing some kind of role in the larger argument currently unfolding between the two candidates.

Be cautious near tractors this spring Farm-related deaths in Illinois reached 14 from July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015, according to the most recent Country Financial data. Since 2005, there have been 256 farm-related deaths.

Spring planting season is about to kick into high gear. As tractors and other farm implements traverse roads in Kane County’s farming areas during the next few weeks, we ask that you slow down to avoid becoming a statistic.

From July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015, roadway collisions were the second-leading cause of farm-related deaths, with five.

Only machinery rollovers or runovers killed more people in Illinois, with seven.

Since 2005, 53 people have been killed in collisions involving farm equipment, accounting for 21 percent of all farm-related deaths in that time period in Illinois.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture provides the following tips for motorists during spring planting season: • Pay attention and don’t drive distracted.

• When you see a slow-moving vehicle, slow down.

• If you have to pass, do so with extreme caution and only when you know it is safe.

• Be patient. A farmer can’t always move over to let motorists pass. If you can’t see the driver, the driver can’t see you. Farm machinery operators may not be able to see you because the large equipment or a load can block part of their rear view.

Farmers can play a role, too: • Avoid traveling on roads during peak traffic hours when moving farm equipment.

• When moving equipment, use escort vehicles that closely follow the farm equipment to afford the highest visibility and warning.

• Pull over to allow traffic to pass only when road and shoulder conditions are safe.

We can have a safe planting season on our roadways if everyone plays their part.

I’m responding to the Sound Off of “Marriage is far better.” She’s saying that the young ones that are 20 years old, they should go work in a bar or grocery store and don’t go for education. No, I say go for your education. I had to take early retirement because I did not have a college degree. I did not finish, and I’m a baby boomer. But the one thing good about with me is that I’m able to retire early, have a house and not worry about finances. Not everybody in this world can do that. If the ones that ... go for marriage [are] not happy in their life, they should find something else that will. Marriage – my husband has his own hobbies and I have my own. We’ve been married a very long time, and we’re happy. Yes, there’s ups and downs whether you’re single or married. But [don’t] tell someone to work in a bar or grocery store – that’s not money. You do that in college to help pay your tuition, so your parents don’t get the bulk of it. But to tell somebody to work in a bar or grocery store – it’s better to work in retail; it’s safer there. Thirty years ago, men were different than they are now. Follow your heart.

KIRK ROAD COMRADES Steel, Cougars ‘want to be good neighbors’

kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Hyperbole and a sixtenth-mile stretch of Kirk Road connect the home venues of the Kane County Cougars and Chicago Steel.

Both are equally vital components.

Naturally, neither a long home run nor a heat-seeking slap shot could feasibly travel to or from the Cougars’ Fifth Third Bank Ballpark and Fox Valley Ice Arena, home of the Steel. But the mere act of suggestion – at least the first few times – might prompt a chuckle, which stands as the bedrock of family-friendly entertainment.

The Cougars and Steel marketed their sports teams as such well before becoming neighbors with the Steel’s August 2015 relocation from Bensenville to Geneva. Going forward, they’re eager to further collaborate on that mission, ostensibly bridging the narrow gap between the ballyard and rink.

“I think for us, as we continue to position ourselves in the market, what we’ve found over the course of the year is one of the easier ways to explain who we are is to say we want to complement what the Cougars do so well during the summertime,” first-year Steel president Dan Lehv said. “And that really resonates with people in this area, because they love the Cougars here.”

Lehv, whose sports career began in Class-A baseball in the early 2000s – about a decade after the Cougars moved from Wausau, Wisconsin, in 1991 – happily extended the teams’ budding goodwill Friday afternoon.

Soon after the Cougars announced the postponement of their scheduled game against Clinton (Iowa) because of inclement weather, the Steel offered any Cougars fan with a postponement ticket free admission to the Steel’s game against Muskegon (Michigan) on Friday night.

Before Mother Nature intervened, Friday stood as the only scheduled

date in which the Cougars of the Class-A Midwest League and the Steel of the United States Hockey League played home games on the same day.

That occurrence might have repeated itself later this month, but the Steel, whose regular season concludes Sunday afternoon, are eliminated from USHL playoff contention.

Lehv and Cougars general manager Curtis Haug both acknowledged a smooth, early working relationship between the organizations and foresee partnerships of more substance “coming down the line,” Lehv said.

In some respects – and to borrow Lehv’s imagery – the Steel could merely wave hello to the proverbial neighborhood welcome wagon at the

start.

The Steel finalized their front office staff just days before the 2015-16 season opened Sept. 26. The final out of the Cougars’ 2015 season came Sept.

10, in the Midwest League playoffs.

On the flip side, the Cougars began their 26th season of baseball in Geneva on Thursday, three days before the end of the Steel’s first season down the street.

“We as an organization would be crazy not to take advantage of the Cougars’ insight into the market and to follow their lead into the things they’ve done so well over the last 25 years,” Lehv said.

In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the same ownership group operates the USHL’s Stampede and the Canaries of the American Association, an independent baseball league. Employees often work for both teams.

Geneva and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, are the lone cities with both Midwest League and USHL franchises. Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, home of hockey’s RoughRiders, is located adjacent to Perfect Game Field, where baseball’s Kernels play. There’s a shared auxiliary parking lot, and until last season, Kernels employees operated concessions at RoughRiders games.

“We greatly respect each other,” said Jason Shaner, a corporate sales employee for the RoughRiders who does freelance pitch tracking work for the Kernels. “We do have some crossing dates.

“It’s a good-sized market for Iowa, but for a major metro, we’re fighting for some of the same people to come to our games. And we all kind of have a different angle.”

Lehv ultimately believes the Cougars and Steel are mutually inclusive in sharing the core fan base of families seeking affordable entertainment year-round.

That the Cougars are affiliated with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Steel are a non-affiliated, Tier I junior hockey team shouldn’t matter.

Just point the car toward the intersection of Kirk Road and Fabyan Parkway and brace yourself for a good time. You might even see a future star athlete in the making.

The Steel have two seasons remaining on their initial lease and have made numerous improvements to their facility at Fox Valley Ice Arena, including a 5,500-pound, team-financed, high-definition scoreboard. They hope to treat fans to playoff hockey under the big lights at this time next spring.

Should that occur, Cedar Rapids figures to offer a blueprint for easy, midApril synergy. This week, Shaner said RoughRiders and Kernels officials were “working through” ticket discount details for a piggyback situation on April 16 in which the Kernels play at 4:05 p.m. and the RoughRiders host a playoff game at 7.

Had the Cougars played Friday and the game time at least matched Thursday’s 2 hours, 55 minutes, a fan might have high-tailed it from the ballpark to the rink in time to see most of the third period. First pitch was scheduled for 6:30 p.m., one hour before puck drop at Fox Valley Ice Arena. As it happened, the organizations worked in cooperation anyway. It was sports seventh heaven between teams six-tenths-miles apart.

GENEVA – The Chicago Steel began their final weekend of the regular season Friday night against the Muskegon Lumberjacks at Fox Valley Ice Arena, one last grueling stretch of three games in as many days.

So far, so good.

The Steel (25-26-3) jumped all over the Lumberjacks (27-25-7) with a pair of first period goals and controlled the game defensively to take a 5-1 victory. In his final game with the Steel on the season before moving on to the U18 World Championships for Team Slovakia next week, Samuel Bucek doubled his season total with a pair of goals.

“We had great passing and a lot of great opportunities. We’re very happy with five goals,” Bucek said. “We had a good pre-scout before the game, so we know what Muskegon is playing like. We had a great system by coach [Dan Muse], and had an aggressive forecheck. We did a great job.”

Just 83 seconds into the first period, Steel defenseman Billy Sweezey got on the board on the team’s first shot of the game. After Max Zimmer worked his way into the corner, he hit Sweezey with a pass while streaking in unchecked from the blue line.

Sweezey hesitated only for an instant before lifting a backhanded wrist shot in the upper corner of the net for just his third goal of the season.

On one of their three power plays of the first period, the Steel padded their

lead with another quick strike. Chicago won the faceoff and immediately found Haralds Egle pushing toward the net. With just one defender to beat, Egle slipped a pass under a Lumberjacks defender’s stick and found a wide-open Bucek on the other side of the net. The winger easily put it away just 10 seconds into power play to give the Steel a two-goal advantage. “[Egle] gave me a great pass,” Bucek said. “It’s very exciting [to score]. I want to have that feeling more and more.”

Getting on the board early is paramount against the Lumberjacks. Muskegon is 17-1-1-3 when leading after the first period, but the Steel were sharper from the initial puck drop before a crowd of 925.

Steel goaltender Daniel Vladar wasn’t challenged often Friday night, recording only 24 saves on the night, but it was his offense that carried the heavy load. Marc Johnstone added a goal to push the Steel’s lead to 3-0 in the second period. Zimmer and Bucek added insurance goals 71 seconds apart in the third period to reach the 5-1 final.

Chicago has been particularly effective against Muskegon this season, finishing with a 4-1-1 record against the Lumberjacks with a plus-12 goal differential.

This was the third straight victory for the Steel, and the club has been showing resiliency despite not being in contention to make an appearance in the USHL playoffs, which start later this month.

Hardy, ‘very young’ Saints gain vital experience

Especially when you’re used to winning.

Take St. Charles East sophomore badminton player Emma Hardy, for example. Hardy tried out for the Saints badminton team her freshman year, enjoyed it and had a fair amount of success. But, there was little pressure.

In Friday’s 13-2 nonconference loss to Glenbard West, many Saints moved up a spot in the lineup, including Hardy jumping into the No. 1 singles spot for the first time.

“I never expected to be this high up, ever,” Hardy said. “I tried out freshman year with no pressure just looking to make the team and not caring about my position. I really wanted to make varsity this year, and it’s been a lot. I love the sport, though.”

Losing matches hasn’t been the easiest thing to deal with for Hardy, especially Friday when she forced a third game – by winning Game 2, 2119 – against Glenbard West’s Maha Qureshi after losing Game 1, 21-10.

Although Hardy lost, 21-13, in Game 3, East coach Tricia DeNorio has continued to preach to her young squad that the experience of playing one of the better teams on its schedule in the Hilltoppers is much more important at this stage than results are.

“They’re not used to losing, honestly,” DeNorio said. “We have a strong program here, but are just very, very young as a team. The girls are getting better and better as the season goes on, and yes, we did lose today, but the girls battled and are learning to play the game better each and every day.”

In fact, the improvement that Hardy has shown since her first days on varsity not only have caught DeNorio’s eye, but those of her fellow teammates.

Hiral Patel, one of four seniors and one of two singles winners Friday for the Saints (Megan Spencer was the other), said she has admired the kind of player Hardy has become.

“I look up to her a lot,” Patel said.

“She’s really good and has gotten so much better since the beginning.”

Stressing that experience is more important than results is one thing, but DeNorio actually getting the girls to believe that is a completely different animal.

One reason the East coach sees Hardy as a program leader for years to come is because of their talks during breaks in between games.

“With Emma, she not only listens, but you see her go out there and do it.

You tell her what she needs to do and when she comes off, she says, ‘Wow it worked.’ She definitely takes what you have to say and acts on it.”

A lot of that is the ability to take corrective criticism at a young age, but it also has to do with the fact that Hardy is determined to be a good badminton player.

Since “falling in love with the game” during her freshman year at East – admitting she tried out because she had nothing to do during the spring season – Hardy began to take lessons at Midwest Badminton Club in Woodridge.

“She’s playing No, 1 singles as a sophomore,” DeNorio said. “Her junior and senior year, she going to be an outstanding player. Her dedication outside of the season is great, and she sees how hard teams’ No. 1s are working and knows what she has to do to get to that level.”

Although it may be difficult to see now, DeNorio believes the results from that “Hardy” work are just around the corner.

Geneva senior Bryan Callaly entered the baseball season as the ace of the Vikings’ pitching staff and has not disappointed. The 6-foot-7, 210-pound right-hander has three of Geneva’s six BRYAN wins on the mound this season, including a five-inning shutout of StreamCALLALY wood in his latest start on Thursday GENEVA – a 10-0 Geneva win. In the latest edition of the Weekend Chit-chat, Callaly, BASEBALL a Southeastern Community College (Iowa) commit, caught up with Kane facilities, including the football and County Chronicle sports reporter basketball facilities.

Chris Casey to talk about the season The weather was a little nicer there, thus far and what the Vikings are capable of accomplishing this season. An huh?

Oh, for sure. It was 60 degrees or edited transcript follows:

Community College in August, the pitching coach there told me I need to focus on keeping my weight back and separating my hands earlier. I was dragging my arm a little bit, so that’s something I have focused on improving on.

How was the team’s spring break trip to Nashville (Tennessee)?

Honestly, we just play for each other and have fun. There’s no real downside this year. I feel like we have it all.

CHIT-CHAT

It was a lot of fun. It’s always fun going out of town and staying in hotel with friends and teammates. We finished 3-1 and played some really good teams. I think that trip will help us a lot not only on the field, but being able to bond and have fun together builds chemistry.

What was your favorite part of the trip?

What’s been key to your fast start on the mound?

My defense has been unreal. I have a sophomore catcher (Josh Rose) who throws out everyone, I feel like, and the rest of the infield is mostly seniors and hardly ever make errors. When you have that behind you, it gives you confidence on the mound.

It’s always strong. Batavia has a great team, St. Charles North has a bunch of Division I kids. St. Charles East is always good. There’s no easy games. You have to come to play every day.

Oh, the Cubs, for sure.

Kaneland girls track eyes breakthrough QUICK READ Kevin Druley Boys and girls track and field athletes and coaches consider the Illinois Prep Top Times meet the unofficial indoor state championship.

There’s nothing ambiguous, however, about the swagger the Kaneland girls derived from last month’s competition at Illinois Wesleyan’s Shirk Center in Bloomington, namely the Knights’ relays.

Kaneland, which is set to open outdoor season when it hosts the Holmes Invitational today, won the 4x800-meter relay (9:42.55) and 4x400 (4:01.37) at Top Times and also is bullish about its 4x100 and 4x200 quartets.

“They’ve accomplished so much on their own in the last couple years, and now that they’re back and they’re together, I think there’s an air of confidence among them,” said Knights assistant coach Keith Snyder, who’s in charge of relays and sprints. “That they know they’re talented, they know they’re good and they work hard at it.

And then if the cards come together and we can stay healthy, which is always kind of a big ‘if’ with us, we can all be there in May and they can do some pretty special things.”

12 Conference meet and state series, and it’s approaching at a mad dash.

Kaneland returns several lynchpins from the 2015 team that finished fifth in the IHSA Class 2A state meet, including the runner-up 4x400 team that ran 2.32 seconds behind champion Morgan Park’s pace.

As with every spring, there have been tweaks due to early-season injuries, but don’t expect to see the leadoff combination of Nicole Sreenan to Allie Heinzer disband.

“We really like the idea of putting two of the best 400-meter runners in the state at the beginning, just getting out and having a lead and making people catch us,” Snyder said. “And then having confidence that we know we’re going to anchor with Jamie Martens at the end.”

Becca Richtman also was part of the 4x400 Top Times relay, which may

yearn for the friendly confines of the Shirk Center again as the Holmes meet progresses.

“We’re excited,” Snyder said, “but we’re hoping we get a little bit warmer weather so we can show how fast we are.”

Exploring different types of strength I am so proud of my son. At 17, he won first place in his age and weight class (198 pounds, raw classic division) in the 2016 APF/AAPF (American Powerlifting Federation) Illinois State Championships in Sycamore last Saturday.

But until they called Noah’s name during the awards ceremony, I had no idea he was even a contender!

And, apparently, nor had he. (In fact, he’d been sitting with his teammates as the ceremony began when he realized he needed to use the restroom – sorry, kid – so he stood up to slip out, but then his name was called, so he had to turn around and go receive his trophy! Ha!) He’d been thrilled simply to achieve his goal of breaking 1,000 pounds in competition (his combined total for the day, of his squat, bench press and deadlifts, was 1,017 pounds), but hey, trophies are awesome, too.

And so is his coach.

Carlos Martinez, coach of the Misfit Power Team at River West Family Fitness in Batavia for three years, is a nationally ranked powerlifter recognized by world record holders as one of the greatest coaches in the business. One of Noah’s idols, Ernie Lilliebridge Sr., a holder of numerous world records in

“You’re a very lucky guy to have Carlos as a coach,” Lilliebridge remarked when he and Noah had a chance to visit Saturday afternoon.

“He’s one of the best you could have.”

Indeed, Carlos has been a good mentor to my son – and has become a dear friend of our family. I’m a huge safety-first kind of mom, of course, but Carlos also inspires Noah to reach – and to dig deep. But I’m not gonna lie, I do worry. I’m always relieved when these meets are over – and I’m not the only one.

It’s hard to beat the look of relief on your boy’s face when he knows he’s achieved his goal (he broke the 1,000 pound mark in competition with his first deadlift attempt on Saturday!), or the pride in a mother’s heart when she knows her boy knows how.

What pleases me most about this win, and, in fact, about Noah’s strength, is that it’s more than just

Indeed, he now knows, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he CAN do whatever he sets his mind to doing – no matter what it is.

He now knows that he can feel passionately about something, create a plan for meeting a goal, stick with it, manage unforeseen ditches and detours (and, yes, even the occasional dessert) and be proud of the end result.

Even, as it happens, if someone else,

by some subjective or virtual margin, technically edges him out for “the win.”

And that’s way more valuable than any trophy.

• 1⁄2 lb. andouille or other smoked sausage, chopped • 1 lb. fresh pork sausage, removed from casings

(This lets the pot heat uniformly, preventing hot spots, which are likely to burn.)

the onions and let them caramelize for about 15 minutes to build more flavor.

I add the bell peppers late to save as much of the color as I can.

Add the celery and garlic, and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally so that everything cooks evenly.

Next add the rice, thyme, cayenne and bay leaves to the pot and cook, stirring often, for about 3 minutes. Increase the heat to high and add the tomatoes and stock. Bring the liquid to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium low, cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

While the rice is cooking, season the shrimp with salt and pepper.

• Stick to a regular schedule. Take walks or exercise at the same time each day, preferably early in the day. Eat an early dinner and go to sleep at the same time each night.

• Schedule appointments, trips and activities in the morning. Limit obligations in the late afternoon hours.

• Take a late afternoon rest. Just putting his feet up and closing his eyes for a short respite can help preserve your husband’s energy and prevent end-of-day fatigue.

• Prevent overstimulation by reducing noise from televisions or stereos.

• Reduce food and beverages that contain caffeine or restrict them to early morning hours. Caffeine can stay in his system for as long as 16 hours and interrupt his sleep. Poor quality sleep also may contribute to sundowning.

• When he begins to feel symptoms, he should either rest or do something familiar that relaxes him, such as reading the newspaper.

• Fortunately, sundowning is not usually a sign of a serious underlying problem. But because it can lead to falls and fractures, try some of the things you and your husband can do yourselves.

If they don’t help, ask his doctor if testing of his intellectual function might be required. But I’ll bet that won’t prove necessary.

Dear Dr. K: My husband and I are in our early 80s. Sometimes in the evening he is agitated, confused and just quite a handful to deal with. The doctor says he has “sundowning.” What is it, and is there anything I can do?

Dear reader: Some older people have trouble concentrating, grow agitated or even confused and become especially fatigued at the end of the day. This phenomenon is known as “sundowning” because its effects tend to coincide with sunset – usually occurring in the late afternoon into the evening, then settling down late at night.

Sundowning behavior is quite common in people with dementia. However, it also can occur in older people without dementia.

Sundowning is more likely to occur in an unfamiliar environment in a dark place. In a previous column about sundowning, I described a patient who never experienced it at home. However, sometimes when she and her husband traveled, it would happen in a hotel room at night. Sundowning occurs quite often in hospitalized patients.

Sundowning needs to be taken seriously, because it can lead to falls and fractured bones as people get out of bed in their confusion and trip over something.

While my family is atheist, we know this family is devoutly Christian. Recently, after I mentioned in conversation we “weren’t religious,” they invited us to their church for service. I diplomatically declined, but it felt awkward having told the mom our non-beliefs.

Since then, this family invites us to church constantly, and the mom routinely brings up Scripture while we’re talking. I feel like they are trying to convert us. I’m hurt that the respect we have extended to this family isn’t being reciprocated. How do I let her know she’s being disrespectful to me and my family’s beliefs without jeopardizing the friendship between our families? – Atheist In The South Dear Atheist: I can’t guarantee the woman won’t take offense, but it’s less likely if you refrain from using the word “disrespectful.”

Try to remember she thinks she’s offering you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. It might be gentler if you told her in light of the fact you are an atheist, you find what she’s trying to do to be “hurtful.”

Continue to politely refuse her invitations to attend her church. If she’s in the habit of quoting Scripture in normal conversation, you will have to grit your teeth and tolerate it.

(Remember, we all have freedom of expression.) But I can’t guarantee you always will remain as close as you have been, not because she’s hurt you’re not interested in being converted, but because at some point you may find her behavior so annoying you will end the relationship.

Teen not interested in cheerleading tryout afraid to disappoint mom Dr. Wallace: Our school soon will be having cheerleading tryouts for next year’s cheerleading squad. My mother was elected head cheerleader when she was in high school and she has been pushing for me to become a cheerleader at my school.

The only problem is I really don’t want to be a cheerleader.

For guys, binge drinking is defined as consuming five drinks in rapid succession. Girls are considered binge drinkers if they knock back four in a row. Binge drinkers are 10 times as likely to drive after drinking as other students, 7 times as likely to have unprotected sex and 11 times as likely to fall behind in their studies, according to a survey conducted by the Alcohol Studies Program at Harvard School of Public Health.

Of the more than 17,000 students surveyed on 140 campuses nationwide, almost half (44 percent) of the students who drank said they had binged at least once. Nineteen percent said they were frequent bingers, having done so at least three times in a 14-day period.

Motorcycle Swap Meet SUNDAY, APRIL 10 A few weeks ago, we looked at the Michaels Cue-Bid. It is the last of my conventions that should be in (almost) all pairs’ repertoires.

When the opening bid is one of a minor, if the next player bids two of that suit, it shows at least 5-5 in the major suits. When the opening bid is one of a major, if the next player bids two of that suit, it promises at least 5-5 in the unbid major and either minor. It is a great convention when the employers win the auction, but when they end up on defense, they have given declarer an accurate map of the deal -- as in today’s example.

West’s two-spade cue-bid showed hearts and a minor. North doubled to indicate a good hand. Then, when South did not double three hearts for penalty, North took a shot at four spades.

How should South play after West leads the heart king? (It is rarely right to lead a singleton with only one trump.)

This contract needs careful timing.

South should win the second heart trick with his ace and draw two rounds of trumps, getting the expected bad news. Undaunted, declarer takes dummy’s top clubs, happy to see West discard. South ruffs a club in his hand, ruffs a heart in the dummy, ruffs a club, plays a diamond to dummy’s ace, and ruffs dummy’s last club.

South’s 10 tricks are two spades, one heart, one diamond, two clubs, three club ruffs in hand, and one heart ruff in the dummy. Both opponents win the last two tricks, West with his red-suit tops and East with his high trumps.

We say that South eloped with his trumps.
