Elgin man dead in single car crash KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE

St. Charles school district names next superintendent

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Jason Pearson – an administrator with St. Charles School District 303 since 2010 – has been named the district’s next superintendent, the district announced Thursday.

Pending school board approval Monday, Pearson will succeed Superintendent Don Schlomann upon his retirement on Jason June 30, 2017.

Pearson Until then, Pearson will continue his duties as the area assistant superintendent for the middle and high schools and also will serve as deputy superintendent during the 201617 school year.

He said he is thankful for the board’s clearly thought-out transition plan and described his new role as an outstanding opportunity.

“I’m honored and excited at the same time,” Pearson, 43, said.

According to Pearson’s proposed

contract, he will have an annualized salary of $148,270.95 from April 1, 2016, to June 30, 2016; an annual salary of $175,000 from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2017; and an annual salary of $220,000 from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018.

Board Vice-President Kathy Hewell said the personnel decision wasn’t rushed, as the board has been working on the issue for the last six to seven months.

The board didn’t conduct a nationwide search because members wanted someone from Illinois who understood the state’s finances and politics, board President Steve Spurling said.

He said it became “very obvious very early on” that Pearson was a great candidate, and the district risked losing him.

“Dr. Pearson is in demand from other districts,” Spurling said.

Noting District 303 has a “legacy of excellence,” Pearson said it is rare to work for a district like St. Charles and to follow a great leader like Schlomann.

Pearson said he doesn’t foresee immediate changes under his leadership

but expects the district will continue to respond to changes in education.

Pearson, who lives in Geneva, earned his undergraduate degree in music education from Belmont University and got his doctorate from Vanderbilt University.

He has worked as an elementary and middle school music teacher, a K-8 principal and a middle school principal.

“One of my best professional choices was coming to District 303,” Pearson stated in a release. “I consider myself fortunate to be able to continue serving a community that places such a high emphasis on education and also provides the resources for our students as this community does.”

Schlomann joined the district in the 2007-08 school year, which is considered a long tenure, Hewell said. In addition to his retirement, another top administrator – Becky McCabe, the area assistant superintendent for elementary education – plans to retire this year.

The board is expected to approve McCabe’s successor, Kristin Raitzer, on Monday.

St. Charles Fire Department plans ceremony for monument relocation

The monument recently was moved from its original space at Baker Memorial Park at Fifth Avenue and East Main Street to the redeveloped green space called Volunteer Plaza. The plaza is across from Fire Station 1 at 112 N. Riverside Ave. The relocation was requested in order to use and facilitate more of the monument and plaza area for ceremonies, including 9/11 remembrances, Memorial Day recognitions and fire department ceremonies for retirements, Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet said.

LOCAL BRIEFS Roadside safety check to be April 15 and 16 on I-88

NORTH AURORA – A roadside safety check is planned from 11 p.m. April 15 to 4 a.m. April 16 for westbound traffic on Interstate 88 at Route 31 in North Aurora, according to the Illinois State Police. The ISP has zero tolerance for impaired driving.

Officers will be watchful for drivers operating vehicles in an unsafe manner, driving with a suspended or revoked license, transporting open alcoholic beverages or driving under the influence.

The safety check is designed to keep roads safe by taking dangerous DUI offenders off the road. The project is funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety.

Kane Forest Preserve District to host story time programs in April

ST. CHARLES – The Forest Preserve District of Kane County has planned programs in its “Story Time at the Nature Center” series. Events take place from 10:30 to 11 a.m. April 15 and May 20 at Creek Bend Nature Center, located within LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles. During the program, staff from the St. Charles Public Library will bring books, finger plays, songs and more for children, from infants through age 5, to enjoy, along with their parents or caregivers.

After each program, all are welcome to enjoy the interactive exhibits in the Nature Center. The programs are free, however, advance registration is required.

Massage business gets nod in downtown Batavia City aldermen to take final vote April 18

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Despite some obvious misgivings, Batavia aldermen Tuesday gave preliminary approval for a massage business in the downtown business district.

However, they imposed restrictions designed to provide transparency: the front windows of the business must be completely unobstructed, with no curtains, blinds, tinting or furniture blocking the view into the building.

Yune Zhou of Springfield plans to open Sunshine Massage in the vacant space at 11 E. Wilson St. The Batavia City Council’s Committee of the Whole approved a con-

ditional use permit for the business on an 11-1 vote.

The council will take a final vote April 18.

With several recent high-profile arrests for soliciting prostitution at massage establishments in St. Charles, aldermen were concerned with how Zhou’s business is to be monitored, and made clear that any code or criminal violations would result in revocation of the permit.

“I want to address the 800-pound gorilla in the room,” 2nd Ward Alderman Martin Callahan said. “What measures do we have in place to ensure that enforcement is in compliance with state law?”

Planning and Zoning Officer Joel Strassman said the city would re-

spond to complaints, but would not be making regular inspections.

Zhou’s plans call for a front entry and waiting room, three private body massage rooms and a communal foot massage area. There would be two or three licensed massage therapists working at the business.

Massage parlors make their plea in St. Charles after recent arrests

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Not wanting to wait for its regularly scheduled meeting, the St. Charles Liquor Control Commission held a special meeting Monday to begin its review of the massage establishments connected with recent arrests.

“We don’t want to delay this process,” said Mayor Ray Rogina, who

also is the liquor commissioner.

An undercover police operation on March 15 netted arrests at Best Massage, 2774 E. Main St.; Lotus Spa, 1700 Lincoln Highway; and Main Spa, 504 E. Main St. Two of three women were charged with prostitution, and two were charged with practicing massage without a license. Both offenses are misdemeanors.

Like liquor license holders, massage businesses accused of violating the terms of their license may be fined or lose their license.

Since the arrests, Police Chief James Keegan said Lotus Spa has closed, rescinded its massage establishment license and forfeited its lease with Shodeen.

Best Massage also pleaded guilty to its charges, but the ownership offered its side, claiming miscommunication was involved.

Rogina accepted the plea and said a decision would be issued within 10 days.

No-refusal operation nets 4 arrests in Kane

with an assistant state’s attorney to quickly obtain a search warrant to compel a DUI suspect to submit to a blood-alcohol level test.

Four DUI arrests were made, McMahon said. He said blood-alcohol contents were obtained for three of the four.

His goal is to have no arrests, he said.

McMahon said he wants people to enjoy themselves but to act responsibly, not just for their sake but for everyone else on the road.

This was the sixth no-refusal operation McMahon’s office has held on St. Patrick’s Day and the 20th overall, he said.

Cumulatively, he said, the no-refusal operations have resulted in 135 arrests, 44 of which were made through the St. Patrick’s Day efforts.

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said 17 police agencies from as far north as Algonquin and as far south as Aurora and Montgomery participated in his office’s latest no-refusal operation.

The Congressional Art Competition is an annual contest held by the Congressional Institute and is open to student artists who reside in the 11th Congressional District. Designer’s Desk Needlepoint goes for sale

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – After 10 years in Geneva, Pat Delp, the owner of Designer’s Desk Needlepoint Shop at 216 James St., said she has put both the building and the business up for sale.

“I’m going to retire,” Delp said. “I’m 76. It’s time to retire. It’s been a wonderful 10 years.”

Austin Dempsey of Batavia Enterprises Real Estate said the building is for sale or lease. Dempsey said he has already had several clients interested in the 3,656-square-foot building, which is listed for just less than $1.5 million.

“I had an offer on it, but it didn’t work out,” Dempsey said. “But we’ve had two restaurant clients interested and a couple retailers expressed an interest. It’s rare to find an opportunity to be interwoven in the downtown history in the heart of Geneva.”

Delp said she has more than a million items in her inventory covering all three floors – everything from embroidery floss and needlepoint patterns to beads and all of the equipment – so she hopes to sell the business.

Registration is underway for the 55th annual Mid-American Canoe and Kayak Race on the Fox River, according to a news release.

The race is set for June 5.

It will feature two lengths for paddlers to choose from: a 10-mile run starting in St. Charles and a 6-mile run from Batavia, the release states. It indicated both races will finish at McCullough Park in Aurora.

People of all ages and abilities may participate.

There are 11 canoe divisions, eight kayak divisions and one non-competitive division, according to the release.

GENEVA – The blue and silver pinwheels – 610 of them – on the front lawn of the Kane County Courthouse in Geneva spun furiously in a strong breeze Thursday, representing the number of abused and neglected children whom CASA Kane County served last year.

CASA stands for “Court Appointed Special Advocate,” and CASA volunteers advocate for abused and neglected children who are going through the legal process.

The pinwheels drew attention to the 13th annual CASA Hands Around the Courthouse observance inside the atrium, where new volunteers were sworn in and officials detailed what the agency has done for children.

Executive Director Gloria Bunce said the CASA program started in Cook County in the 1970s from a single judge “who could not even sleep at night because he knew not enough was being done in the lives of these neglected children.”

“And he said, ‘No more.’ It takes that one person – it takes that one CASA volunteer – to make a change so that our children know that they are valued,” Bunce said. “We are that proactive organization that stands up for the rights of abused and neglected children. …

We are the difference-makers.”

Bunce said, in 2015 there were 230,000 calls made to the state child abuse hotline – 800-252-2873 – including 4,000 for Kane County.

Kane County Chief Judge Susan Boles also spoke to the crowd, saying the annual event coincides with April being National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Before becoming chief judge, Boles had presided over abuse and neglect court.

“Although what brings families to that courtroom clearly is marked by sadness and concern, abuse and neglect court allows for – and promotes – hope,” Boles said. “There is nothing better than watching a family thrive through much needed services and support [and] watching a child blossom through consistency, love and support.”

Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said that during the past five years – in 96 percent of cases where charges were brought – the abuser is a family member or someone close to the family.

In papers filed Wednesday, Hastert’s lawyers asked Judge Thomas M. Durkin to spare Hastert time behind bars and give him probation instead, citing his deteriorating health and the steep price they say he has already paid in shame and disgrace, according to the AP. According to a court filing from his attorneys, Hastert is “profoundly sorry” for the harm he caused others decades ago. The attorneys also contend that Hastert “reshaped his life” many years ago. Hastert, however, does not acknowledge he sexually abused his students during his years at YHS. Hastert, who resides in Plano, was hospitalized last fall.

Prosecutors are expected to seek at least some prison time this week when they file their own sentencing papers, in which the government could also offer more details about Hastert’s actions that underpinned the banking charge.

Hastert left YHS in 1981 after he was sworn-in to his first of three terms as a state representative. He was elected to Congress in 1986.

At least four people have made “credible allegations of sexual abuse” against former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, according to a report Thursday in the Chicago Tribune, The Associated Press reported the newspaper has determined the identities of three accusers, all of them men whose allegations stem from when they were teenagers and Hastert was their coach at Yorkville High School more than three decades ago. One of the accusers is dead. The other two accusers have been described in court documents only as Individual A and Individual D. Individual A declined to make any comment when approached by the newspaper. Individual D spoke privately to the newspaper, according to the Tribune.

The newspaper did not name any of the men who are still alive and it said it did not know the identity of the fourth accuser and offered no details about that person, according to the AP. The AP previously identified the now-deceased accuser as Stephen Reinboldt, a team equipment manager at YHS, where Hastert worked as a

teacher and wrestling coach from 1965 to 1981. Individual A and Individual D, were popular standout athletes in Yorkville from well-known families, according to the Tribune report.

Reinboldt’s sister, Jolene Burdge of Billings, Montana, has told the AP her brother told her his first homosexual experience was with Hastert and that the sexual abuse lasted throughout his time at Yorkville. Reinboldt died in 1995.

The 74 year-old Hastert, who served as U.S. Speaker of the House from 1999 to 2007, is scheduled to be sentenced April 27 in federal court in Chicago.

He pleaded guilty last fall to violating banking laws while seeking to pay $3.5 million in hush money to ensure Individual A stayed quiet about unspecified past misconduct by Hastert against that person. According to court documents, Hastert managed to pay $1.7 million to Individual A in lump sums of $100,000 cash and abruptly stopped making the payments in 2014 after the FBI questioned him about the large cash withdrawals.

The AP noted key aspects of the case have been shrouded in secrecy, starting Hastert’s indictment by federal prosecutors last May 28. The sev-

Bond yields predict ‘new mediocre’ is here to stay

“In price is knowledge” was the dictum drummed into me by an editor when I first started writing about finance. The bond market is telling us that the outlook for growth and inflation is the worst it’s been for almost a year. And it’s also suggesting that central banks will fail to meet their key policy objective of pushing inflation back up to 2 percent.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde has adopted the phrase “the new mediocre” to describe the current economic backdrop.

“The good news is that the recovery continues; we have growth; we are not in a crisis,” she said on Tuesday. “The not-so-good news is that the recovery remains too slow, too fragile, and risks to its durability are increasing.”

Bond market rates suggest investors see very little prospect of inflation in the coming years, and are therefore willing to put their money in government securities without demanding any return.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield is down to about 1.7 percent from the 2.3 percent level that prevailed when the Federal Reserve raised interest rates in December. That’s odd; long-term borrowing costs should be rising when a central bank is in tightening mode. The Fed said there might be two more rate increases in the pipeline this year; the bond market

suggests otherwise.

Higher central bank rates should mean consumer prices are expected to rise; bondholders should therefore demand higher returns to compensate for accelerating inflation eroding the value of their money in the future. But the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco reckons market-based gauges of inflation expectations aren’t showing that. “A substantial portion of the decline in these measures reflects a notable downward shift in investors’ medium- and long-term inflation expectations,” the bank said in a report published Monday.

This is important. Former Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke’s 2002 speech “Deflation: Making Sure ‘It’ Doesn’t Happen Here” asserted that “sufficient injections of money will ultimately always reverse a deflation.” But cranking up the printing presses to an unprecedented degree has thus far failed to stoke inflation; and the bond market shows investors don’t expect that to change.

That raises the uncomfortable possibility that the economic textbooks are misleading, the Fed was wrong to raise rates at the end of last year and that central banks are basically flying blind. Unless and until bond yields start to rise, central banks will continue to miss their inflation targets, and the risk of deflation will remain a threat to the global economy.

Robinson works as a high school custodian by night, yet on this evening, he fancied himself a steward of the Cougars’ past before their 2-1 loss to Clinton.

Robinson muttered about Adrian Gonzalez and Joe Borowski, among others. Then he lent his view on what unites them – beyond a uniform and display board, that is.

“They’re regular guys out of almost high school, walking around,” Robinson said. “Regular kids.”

“You’ll still get somebody in their teens, but that’s usually a kid who’s very special,” Benjamin said. “But even looking at the [Rookie League] roster last year, there’s a lot more older kids. I don’t know if they hang on to them because they are valuable, they can move up. They’re more mature if someone gets hurt two levels above

them. … So there is value in them, in that sense.

“When you start getting into a lot of those kids, then you’re basically saying you don’t have any young talent.

But I think the trend is kind of going that way, hanging on to kids a little bit longer.”

The Cougars, who project as a pitching-rich team, scored a run in their first time at bat. Reyes, who walked to lead off the inning, scored on catcher Luke Lowery’s one-out groundout back to Clinton pitcher Lukas Schiraldi.

Lowery later added the Cougars’ lone extra-base hit among their seven hits in the game, a sixth-inning double.

“You know, it was just nice getting out there with all the guys,” Lowery said. “We’ve got a good group of guys.

We’ve been playing together a little bit in spring training toward the end, and I think we’ve got a great group of guys.

It’s just that first game, just kind of getting the pregame jitters out. I think we fought all the way all the way until the end, and we were in that game the entire way.”

Left-hander Alex Young, a Carmel graduate the Diamondbacks drafted in the second round in 2015, is set to start for the Cougars when the brief,

two-game series concludes at 6:30 p.m. today.

Baseball America rates Young highly among D’backs prospects, but Christene Robinson, Frank’s wife, already had a hunch about Young and

his teammates before watching a single 2016 pitch.

“Seeing the enthusiasm of the players,” Christene Robinson said. “They just seem to really enjoy the game.

They do.”

Over the past two years, chances of snow on April 7 in the Chicagoland area were 0.7 percent (in 2014) and 0.0 percent (2015), according to Weather Underground’s weather history.

It’s seemed there were warmer and better days to play baseball in December and January than the past couple of days.

“I love the cold. But it was probably best that we didn’t play today,” said Holm, who was standing on the mound during his phone conversation with Genke. “The sleet was blowing in my face and I said, ‘Yeah, we probably shouldn’t play.’ Especially this early, you don’t want guys going down because of a weather-related injury.”

For all that the bad weather that prevents players from getting to play games, Genke feels it’s extremely important to take advantage of the opportunities that these types of days present to teams.

Although it may look like very little when someone hits a home run or throws a shutout, the North coach expressed to his team that it’s vital to continue to get better whenever there’s a chance.

“It’s tough because the guys want to play, you know,” Genke said. “Anytime you get a win like we did (in the Batavia opener), you want to ride that and continue to stay hot. Being in Myrtle Beach and finally getting outside, but

Much the same can be said for Kaneland and coach Brian Aversa, who has taken the opportunity to have the Knights focus on things they struggled with in Myrtle Beach.

We’ve taken full advantage of these past couple of days and hopefully we can get out there soon and see that this work is starting to pay off.”

Arguably the best line about the weather and postponements Thursday came from Burlington Central coach Kyle Nelson, who tweeted from the Rockets’ baseball Twitter account saying that “Lake Burlington” had returned to center field. Oh, what a tease spring break trips have turned out to be.

After wearing short sleeves, taking team pictures on beaches and wearing sunglasses on the diamonds in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the St. Charles North, Kaneland and Burlington Central baseball teams, among others on spring break trips, returned home to weather this week that they couldn’t even expect.

It’s April. The thought of snow was somewhat laughable, yet since returning from trips, teams have been lucky to get even one game completed.

North has had back-to-back Upstate Eight Conference River Division games against Batavia canceled due to inclement weather after winning the series opener, 5-0, Tuesday.

“You’d love to be out there, but it’s not worth risking an injury,” North coach Todd Genke said Wednesday. “The guys are obviously chomping at the bit, but I talked with [Batavia coach Matt Holm] today and we feel this is an extremely important series for both teams and the

Knights lack ‘intensity’ in loss

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore girls soccer team maintained possession of the ball against Kaneland on Thursday in an early season Northern Illinois Big 12 East battle, limiting the potent Knights’ offense.

The Spartans got a first-half goal from Jenna Lewey and a second-half goal from Ella Holland for a 2-0 win.

In the 66th minute, the Knights had their best chance to score when Becca Richtman passed the ball across the middle, but ahead of the Kaneland attack. Sycamore’s Emma Stice cleared it before the Knights were able to catch up.

“I don’t think we brought the intensity, which is fine,” Kaneland coach Scott Parillo said. “Learning experience for us. We had those easy games, and today wasn’t an easy game. We didn’t match their intensity or anything like that. You’ve got to learn from that.”

After scoring 24 goals in their first four games, the Knights (5-1, 1-1 NI Big 12 East) have scored just one goal in their two conference games – the first a 1-0 win Tuesday at DeKalb.

“The competition has gotten better, plus we took two weeks off,” Parillo said. “We knew we were going to be rusty. But we just didn’t match their intensity today and we’ve got to learn from that.”

The Knights are back in action in the first round of the Pepsi Showdown, facing Glenbard East on Field 5 at Olympic Park in Schaumburg at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Lewey said the win gives the Spartans sizable momentum heading forward in conference play, which resumes Monday at DeKalb.

“Kaneland is probably the best competition in the conference, so to get a win over them is really big for us,” Lewey said.

The Spartans (7-1-1, 2-0) had a couple early shots against Kaneland goalkeeper Emily Chapman, but were unable to connect for the first 20 minutes. They ended up taking a free kick just outside the Kaneland box, and the shot was deflected to Lewey, who put it in for the first goal.

“Their keeper hit it off, and I just saw an opportunity to hit it in,” Lewey said.

The Spartans had two more chances immediately after the goal.

Shortly after, Coulibally fed Ella Holland a beautiful pass and Holland ripped it at the goal, but Chapman dived for the save.

Sycamore goalie Emily Cook made just two saves in the game, and the Knights didn’t so much as attempt a corner kick in the game.

“Our defensive line gets a ton of credit, not just winning the ball but working the ball out of the back, really finding our passes forward,” Spartans coach Dave Lichamer said.

Dominguez boosts Vikings

editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – Kyleigh Dominguez decided to play soccer her senior year at Geneva, and her teammates couldn’t be happier.

Dominguez’s recorded her sixth goal of the season in the second half Thursday to help the Vikings secure a 2-0 victory over Schaumburg in the St. Charles East Invite. Dominguez found the back of the Saxons’ net from the right side with 21:05 to play.

“I think I was a little lucky to score,” Dominguez said. “Things ran through and my sister (Jenna) passed me the ball and I shot. I was surprised it went in.”

Already committed to Cincinnati through her performances with her club team, Dominguez decided to play with the Geneva team for the first time as a senior.

“Having my sister on the team and everyone else on my club team playing high school, I really didn’t have a choice,” Dominguez said.

Dominguez, who had a hat trick against Streamwood on Monday, has been chosen to play on the U17 Mexican Women’s National Team. She

will represent Mexico in the 2016 U17 Women’s World Cup. Dominguez helped the Vikings stay unbeaten on the season (5-0-1). Geneva played Naperville Central to a 1-all tie Wednesday night.

Geneva coach Megan Owens was pleased with her squad’s effort and the shutout victory in the Vikings’ second game in as many days, and third game in four days.

“We had tired legs. So I am happy with the results,” Owens said.

She was pleased with the Vikings’ ball control throughout the contest.

“We dominated possession the whole game,” Owens said. “We controlled the game. I am very happy with how we played. We had games on back-to-back days. I am pleased with how we responded.”

Geneva got on the scoreboard late in the half when senior Briar Schwardt scored on a penalty kick.

With 4:11 to play in the half, Schaumburg (1-6) was called for a handball in the box and Schwardt converted on the opportunity to give Geneva the lead.

Geneva will face the tournament host Saints at 5 p.m. Saturday. Dominguez expects it to be a tough contest.

North’s Waslawski remains steady in circle

ccasey@shawmedia.com Jillian Waslawski won’t forget the final start of her freshman girls softball season.

One win away from a trip to the IHSA Class 4A state tournament, St. Charles North fell to Oak Park-River Forest, 14-7, in a Rosemont Supersectional game. OPRF was one of the few teams that was able to solve Waslawski.

There has yet to be a sophomore slump for Waslawski, who has guided the North Stars (2-1) to two wins in three starts to start the season.

“Jillian really picked up right where she left off,” North coach Tom Poulin said. “She’s gotten stronger as the games have gone on and that’s what we need from her. When we have needed the defense to make plays behind her, we have gotten it.”

Although North lost a couple of key pieces to last year’s team to graduation, including Jillian’s sister, Kaitlyn, any time Jillian Waslawski takes the mound, Poulin and assistant coach Thijs Dennison like the team’s chances to win.

Lambert shines early: After dealing with an injury for much of last baseball season, St. Charles North pitcher Jack Lambert came into this season optimistic.

After throwing six shutout innings against Batavia on Tuesday, one of the more rare opportunities could present itself to North coach Todd Genke after back-to-back cancellations.

A three-game Upstate Eight Conference River Division series started Tuesday with a 5-0 North Stars victory, and is set to conclude with Game 3 on Monday after resuming today.

That would put both starters from that game, Jack Lambert (North) and Glenn Albanese (Batavia) on five days of rest. Should either pitcher feel they are able to pitch, would Genke or Bulldogs coach Matt Holm throw them twice in this unusual, spread out three-game set?

“It’s certainly enticing,” Genke said. “We feel comfortable about every arm we have on our roster, but if Jack felt rested and ready to go, I don’t see why you couldn’t throw him again. We’re confident in any guy we put out there and feel like we have a good game plan for our pitchers.”

“Lambert might be the best pitcher we see all season,” Batavia coach Matt Holm said. “I’m sure we’ll see Lambert again. I mean, why wouldn’t we? He looked very strong. We have to take a look at ours because you can’t temper the rotation too much

Steel salute teachers as season nears end

kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – If 95 percent of the Chicago Steel’s inaugural USHL season in Geneva has elapsed and three games still are remaining, how many games are there in a season?

To be sure, many of the distinguished guests at today’s Teacher Appreciation Night game against Muskegon (Michigan) at Fox Valley Ice Arena could arrive at the answer. Steel forward Alex Frye, a South Elgin student from Michigan, might also tell you it’s “60” if he weren’t so contemplative.

“I mean, I don’t want the season to be over, but it looks like it’s getting to the end,” Frye said. “The boys will still be together for a little longer, stay in touch after the season, as well.”

The Steel relocated from Bensenville in the summer of 2015 and were just days removed from finalizing their front office staff at Fox Valley Ice Arena when they opened the regular season with a 5-1 victory against the Team USA national team development program on Sept. 26.

A flurry of midseason roster moves followed a handful of fall transactions.

“We all enjoy it,” defenseman Matt Kiersted said. “We’re grateful for the facilities that we have. We have the lounge with coaches and ping pong and TV. Guys will stay for a couple hours

after practice and hang out and talk.

Kiersted and Frye are among the six Steel players attending Fox Valley high schools this school year, balancing academics with playing in the lone Tier 1 junior hockey league in the United States. Max Zimmer graduated from Wheaton North early.

As part of tonight’s festivities, seven

educators from Geneva School District 304 will participate in a simultaneous, ceremonial puck drop before the game begins at 7:30 p.m.

Jake Nielsen, of Wisconsin, and fellow forward Austen Long, a Minnesotan, are Geneva seniors. Nielsen has grown especially fond of his physical education teacher, Tom Chernich, who also coaches Geneva wrestling.

“I love Chernich,” Nielsen said.

“He’s a good guy.”

Homecomings: Muskegon defenseman Graham Lillibridge attended Geneva High school as a freshman and sophomore before signing a tender with the Lumberjacks this season. Tonight marks his third game before friends and family at Fox Valley Ice Arena. He attends Mona Shores High School in Norton Shores, Michigan, and stays with a billet family.

Fellow defenseman Grant Gabriele played 32 games with the Steel this season – and six with Omaha before that – before joining the Lumberjacks in his second trade of 2015-16.

“I love the kids in Chicago. I talk to them all the time,” Gabriele said. “I had a lot of fun when I was there, so I definitely keep in touch with those guys.”

Garfield Farm Museum will host a lecture on herb gardening at 1 p.m.

Sunday, April 10.

During the program, Samantha Bamberger, a museum volunteer, will discuss the origins of herbs, as well as the differences between them and spices. In addition, a small hands-on demonstration for learning how to plant and transplant herbs will take place.

The course is intended for beginning and intermediate gardeners. There is a $10 donation for the class, and reservations are required by calling the museum at 630-584-8485 or emailing info@ garfieldfarm.org.

Garfield Farm Museum is located 5 miles west of Geneva off of Route 38, on Garfield Road. The 374-acre site is a historically intact, former 1840s’ farm and teamster inn being restored as an 1840s’ working farm museum by volunteers and donors from around the country.

SUGAR GROVE – Waubonsee Community College has been ranked among the best community colleges in the state by www.schools.com.

The college was ranked fourth among community colleges in Illinois, states a news release from Waubonsee.

Options for knee replacement Dear Dr. K: I am going to have my knee replaced. What types of artificial knee joints are available?

Dear Reader: The knee is a joint formed by the bottom end of the thigh bone and the top ends of two bones of the lower leg. When the ends of the bones that form the joint become damaged, they can be removed and replaced. That’s total knee replacement, and it is major surgery.

The damaged parts of the bones that form your knee joint are replaced with an artificial material that is shaped like your bones should be. That will allow your knee to again do all the things it needs to do: bend, twist and bear your weight. The artificial material will be attached to the healthy bone above and below it.

Once you have decided to have a total knee replacement, your surgeon may discuss with you several choices. One choice the surgeon needs to make is which artificial material to use for your new knee.

Options include different combinations of hard polished metal, hard ceramic and tough, slick plastic: • Metal-on-metal. These implants were developed to last longer than other implants. But metal-on-metal implants may cause inflammation and pain. Worse, they may shed harmful microscopic bits of metal into the bloodstream.

• Polyethylene. The major drawback to this type of plastic material has been wear.

Tiny pieces of the plastic flake off, provoking the immune system cells in the bone to which the plastic has been attached. Turning on the immune system cells produces substances that weaken bone tissue. As a result, the implant pulls away from the bone and has to be replaced. Manufacturers have modified the plastic to make “crosslinked” polyethylene. The newer materials may be more wear-resistant.

You and your surgeon also will have a choice of cemented or cementless implants.

Most total knee replacements today are done with cement. They use acrylic cement to quickly glue the implant to the healthy bone above and below it.

Cementless implants have surfaces with small holes in them. The healthy bone grows into the implant to form a solid attachment, and no cement (glue) is required.

Despite early hopes, cementless implants have not proven to be more durable than cemented implants. There also is a “hybrid” option that uses a combination of cemented and cementless attachments.

Another decision is between a fixed-bearing or rotating knee platform. A fixed-bearing knee prosthesis is the most common type. In a rotating platform prosthesis, the polyethylene insert can rotate slightly. This allows for better movement and reduced stress and wear.

The best implant design for you will depend on many factors, including your weight, bone quality, age, occupation and activity level. The surgeon’s experience with a particular model or brand often enters into the decision, too.

That is why it is imperative she knows, in the meantime, she is loved and wanted.

Sometimes the seeds we try to plant as parents, of honesty, decency, the value of hard work and good citizenship, fail to sprout until later than we expected. But they will sprout and flourish in time.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a student athlete, and I have softball practice every day after school. I’m in the 11th grade and, so far, I’ve only received one B since I’ve been in high school. All my other grades have been A’s.

When we have practice, we all do our very best because we like

to win. Lately, I’ve been exhausted after practice, and I come home and take an hour nap after dinner before I do my homework. Then it usually takes me two hours to complete all of it.

My problem is I seem to have trouble concentrating on my homework after taking my nap.

I often read something and then can’t remember what I’ve read.

adequate amount of nighttime sleep. It’s extremely difficult to maintain good study habits without enough rest, according to a study conducted by the University of Colorado.

The study revealed a nap before you begin your homework seriously can impair your ability to remember what you’ve read.

Students were advised not to nap before studying unless ample waking time (at least an hour) is still available before hitting the books.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY I need some advice about Jeanne quitting smokPhillips ing. I am the father of an only child and husband to a wonderful wife. But for some reason, I have not been able to find the motivation to quit. I know smoking is bad for my health, and I don’t want to endanger my child’s health any longer.

I have tried the gum, the patch and even prescription meds. My willpower just isn’t strong and I can’t quit, no matter what I try.

I need the right inspiration. Can you help me stop this nasty habit? – Sick Of It In Missouri Dear Sick Of It: I’ll try. As a former smoker, I’ll share what worked for me. Cold turkey.

First, clean house. Get rid of all the cigarettes you have stashed at home, in your car and at your workplace. Yes, even the pack you “forgot” in your jacket pocket.

Realize your body is saturated with nicotine, and it must be flushed out. Drinking lots of water for the first month will help you accomplish that.

Then, choose one day when you will go entirely smoke-free. Understand going in you will crave your “fix.” When that craving hits, if you must put something in your mouth, chew (non-nicotine) gum, go brush your teeth or eat a crunchy vegetable (carrot sticks, celery). If you can manage to do this for just one day, you can do it for another one. And then another, etc.

Accept you are an addict and your “sobriety” is something you will have to cling to with determination. Eventually the impulse to grab a cigarette will fade, but every now and then you may have an urge to smoke that comes out of left field. When that happens, get up and walk out of the room. By the time you return, the urge will have subsided. Mine did.

And one more thing – if you fall off the wagon (and you might), think about watching your child graduate from high school or college, getting married and playing with your grandchildren. Your chances of doing those things will be better if you’re not a smoker.

Then get back on that wagon and start over again.

That’s how I quit, and the third time I did it, it worked. (Clearly, I do not have willpower of cast iron.) If I can do it, believe me, so can you. Please write again in six months and let me know you’re tobacco-free, too. I’m rooting for you.

In textbook Jacoby Forcing Raise, the opener’s rebids are strange; they are available on the Internet. But you can Keep It Simple, Sensible, by making natural rebids, or, as South does here, jumping to game with a minimum.

How should South play in four spades after West leads the heart nine?

On a bad day, declarer might lose one spade, two hearts and one club.

Before he plays from the dummy at trick one, he concentrates on the lead. Since a nine is top of nothing, East has the heart ace-jack. To freeze out that suit, South must call for dummy’s queen. East wins with his ace, but cannot return the suit without sacrificing a trick there.

Suppose East shifts to a club.

West wins and leads the heart eight, but South takes the trick, draws two rounds of trumps, then plays off dummy’s club winners to discard his heart loser.
