hile kids and their parents were hunting for candy and treats, I was on the hunt for bunny ears while covering the Downtown Batavia Egg Hop. When photographing an assignment like this, I always try to capture an image

that would be the epitome of that event.

For me, on this particular day, I was in search of bunny ears and even the bunny himself.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning, as children and their families swarmed the Peg Bond Center at the Batavia River-

walk. Some little girls were dressed in their “Easter best,” and I was excited to see a lot of bunny ears in the crowd.

New Geneva antiques store features variety

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – For the 15 years she worked as a certified real estate appraiser, Carrie Tatone’s interest in antiques was a way to relieve stress. Then, her pastime became her job.

For the past seven years, the St. Charles resident was an antiques dealer at the Geneva Antique Market and at Amazing Grace Antiques in Elburn. On March 5, Tatone opened her own antique store, The Gathering, in the Berry House, 227 S. Third St., Geneva.

“It’s more than antiques,” Tatone said.

“We sell vintage, primitive, folk art …

rugs, runners and baskets and jewelry.”

Tatone said she has two other antiques dealers in her store. She said she studied art in college and brings her skill to the store.

“I think I’m different,” Tatone said.

“I’m not just piling it in there. I take and repaint furniture, and I’m bringing it back to life. I take old frames and make them into chalk boards. I repaint lamps and mix it in with the collectible stuff.

I try to have a decorative flair. … I buy brand-new rugs and mix that in with the furniture.”

Tatone said she has a special connection to the new and vintage jewelry she brings into the store. She is the fourth

generation in her family involved with jewelry.

“My great-grandfather and great-uncle were Cartier diamond setters and jewelry designers in the 1920s,” Tatone said.

“I grew up in the jewelry business.”

She co-owns the business with her husband, Joe Tatone, who works in road construction.

“My husband is still in construction, but he is my [antique] picker,” Carrie Tatone said.

She said she will schedule a grand opening later in April. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Information is available by calling 630-457-5024 or on Facebook.

St. Charles salon readies for summer opening

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Dean Courser wanted to find the right tenant for his real estate in downtown St. Charles, which previously housed Vertical Drop Ski and Patio.

He said he got his wish with Mixology Salon Spa – an upscale, multifaceted salon that is moving into 5,200 square feet on the building’s east end. “[It is] a great thing for downtown St. Charles,” Courser said.

At 116 W. Main St., the building sits at the corner of West Main Street and Route 31, about a block away from the Fox River. Vertical Drop, which Courser started in 1979, closed under a different owner in 2013.

Interior demolition for Mixology began Monday, co-owner Sue Henry said.

She is opening the salon with Phoebe Falese – the stylist and creative director – and is aiming for a summer opening, likely by Aug. 1, she said.

She said they are excited about the location.

“We wanted to be in the heart of downtown,” Henry said, noting they live in St. Charles and are looking forward to “being in the ground level of building up downtown.”

Henry said they hope the salon will capture more of the wedding business, which tends to go to Geneva.

“There’s nothing like this in the area,” Henry said, describing it as a “great asset.”

Mixology will be an Aveda concept salon and will have a dedicated retail space in front for the brand’s products, Henry said. She said services will include custom color – hence the name

Mixology – as well as manicures, pedicures, massages and facials.

But Mixology won’t be just for women, Henry said. Men will have their own area within the salon, she said, adding the business will accommodate young, up-and-coming male clients who also seek high-end salon services.

In addition to grooming services, Mixology will feature local artwork in a back room named 116 Gallery, Henry said, noting a partnership with Cultural Connection. Artwork also will be sold throughout the salon, she said.

CREATIVITY TAKES A NEW FORM Dungeons and Dragons club engages students through interactive storytelling

jbeltrano@shawmedia.com Quinn LaFave, a pirate, had just ferreted out a Cloak of Elvenkind from a pile of hay. The cloak grants characters invisibility in any natural environment. Members of the Dungeons and Dragons club at St. Charles East High School, Rookies in Dungeons, now were faced with a taxing task: who deserved the cloak more.

“This is a problem you guys will have to address with what to do with magic or empowered items,” Taylor O’Neill, the club’s founder and dungeon master, said. “So this is up to you guys to decide. You could gamble on it; you could roll and whoever gets the highest number gets it; you could do finders keepers … .You guys got to figure out a system that works for you.”

The discussion became extensive when the club’s members attempted a consensus. Torie LaFave, who plays a half-elf ranger/cleric, decided to keep the cloak for future use, as the decision had already taken up too much valuable time.

Rookies in Dungeons has seen a growing amount of interest lately, and according to O’Neill, the club experienced an increase of curious students late spring the past year and a much larger wave in October and November.

“We had 15 people, which is insane because your average group is like four or five,” O’Neill said. “It was constantly changing who was there. I think we had like three or four people who were constants who were there almost every meeting, and now it’s settled down [to] the same people every time.”

The club meets every other Tuesday in The Getaway, East’s student-run restaurant. It has met a capacity at around nine recurring members.

Dungeons and Dragons is a stationary role-playing game, fusing sci-fi with fantasy. The game has been popular since the late ‘70s, especially during the ‘80s, but then dwindled in popularity after getting a reputation of being a satanic cult, said Jacob Stewart, the local club’s adviser.

“It lost a bit of its cult representation since the ‘90s,” Stewart said.

The game now is gaining a beloved reputation by many of the East club members and Stewart because it is a channel for creativity. A majority of the club’s members already wish to pursue storytelling and writing. The

“I’m actually using it as a kick-start for the story I’m trying to write, and I’m using the mythology that I made for the story here, and it’s my way of trying everything out,” O’Neill said. “I know other people are using it as basis for some short stories that they’re doing.”

The idea of the game is to create an ongoing and never-ending story, also known as a campaign. Each edition of the game helps build and expand that story and is a different flavor of storytelling, said Christian Metzger, who plays a dwarf fighter. There are five published editions of the game; each is different in its own way.

“It’s preference,” Metzger said. “If you want to use a dessert example, if you are conditioned to eating chocolate, you will prefer eating chocolate.

First edition for [O’Neill] is like chocolate, but for fifth edition it’s like vanilla.”

The club’s current campaign is based off of the rules and maps provid-

ed by the first edition of Dungeons and Dragons, published in the ‘70s. It is the same booklet that O’Neill’s dad used to start his own high school club.

“The campaign booklet basically is a laid-out story; it’s like a small novel,” Sam Schatz, who plays a monk in the game, said. “There’s maps and illustrations and charts and statistics everywhere. It starts out usually with the first couple of pages … a story about the world, and the next pages are what you’re going to encounter in the certain parts of the map.”

Every edition is a new set of rules and maps. All you need to play are the set of rules provided by each edition and a set of various multisided dice.

The rest is up to an individual’s story-telling and fast-paced strategy-making, O’Neill said.

The role of the dungeon master is to provide the maps, monsters, rules and statistics to the characters.

An interior map is drawn by O’Neill on a dry-erase board in the corner of the room. For the characters, creat-

ing the map is a progressive process, but O’Neill knows what is behind every corner. What she does not know is how each player will interact with the world.

“It’s very stimulating with creativity. It makes you think on your feet,” O’Neill said. “You open the door, and there’s an ogre. What do you do? And I try to keep it real time, so I won’t let you sit there for 30 seconds and do pros and cons and figure out what works best. You got to answer me right away. … It definitely gives you this sense of action.”

She provides the background of the story. The other members, and their dice, create the storyline and the outcome of each situation faced.

In the middle of the game, Jaiden Jaquith had just rolled a pair of 10-sided dice. One die contained two-digit numbers – zeroes attached to the digits one through 10 – the other die had single digits.

The resulting roll of the dice leads to different outcomes in situations during the game. For example, when the players found the hay in the middle of the game, the dice were rolled to see if Jaquith’s character noticed anything mysterious about the hay.

“I got a 46, which is pretty middle-road, so there’s just something weird about it,” Jaquith said.

Jaquith, who joined in the fall, plays a drow ranger, an elf who was born beneath the earth. When he joined the campaign, the team had to develop a storyline that included his character.

“I became a ranger up in the North … I eventually traveled down South and met all these fools in a tavern,” Jaquith said.

Characters are split into different classes and categories based on their acquired abilities, such as fighter, monk, cleric, thief and barbarian.

“I went home that night and built three characters with fully fleshed-out backstories,” Jaquith said. “It is so much fun for me to go back and create more or even just develop the ones I’ve already made. And coming here, being able to use those characters and knowing that I am just for all intents and purposes that person that I made, feels wonderful.”

The club is currently traveling in the same party. It recently received a job from a church to investigate an abandoned building that contains monsters and ghouls, Jaquith said.

Schatz plays a monk, a carried character, who is an accessory to the group.

He has the ability to talk to animals.

But Schatz does not get to do much combat after receiving a curse that left him once unable to control his own character.

“Why I come to D&D is not to play the game, but more just to hang out

with other people,” Schatz said. “I like being here … I like having big laughs.”

Rookies in Dungeons was developed last February by O’Neill and her creative writing workshop partner, Torie LaFave. The club’s origins began in O’Neill’s creative writing class. Then marching band members joined. The club eventually brought in a variety of students once it was established.

“I would never meet any of these other students who would be interested in this because we don’t have any common connections,” O’Neill said.

“But we end up seeing each other and realize we have this connection, and then we start to realize other connections.”

Metzger said that the club provided him a unique outlet for friends. When he moved to this area from Texas, it was hard for him to find an established group of friends.

“We connected, and then we actually got closer and became friends through these wild adventures that we had,” Metzger said. “I think that it’s made me more outgoing and confident as a person, and it’s helped me develop more of a social life that I didn’t have before.”

The club’s adviser, Stewart, said the game is a great benefit. Students can build skills to help tell stories and solve problems. Other teachers and staff members also have shown a keen interest in the game.

O’Neill believes this interest is not isolated to just St. Charles East. If there are a large number of interested students there, other schools should have a club integrated to create a social and creative outlet for their students, O’Neill said.

O’Neill, a junior, plans to teach younger players the role of dungeon master and keep the club revolving.

“I want people to be able to pretend … but express something that they want to be, or something that they’ve never been before,” O’Neill said.

Enda M. Allison, age 94, of St. Charles, formerly of Chicago and Downers Grove passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at Inspirations Senior Living surrounded by her family.

She was born May 3, 1921, in Chicago, the daughter of Joseph and Ann (O’Malley) Mortimer.

Enda enjoyed sewing, reading, and cooking. She especially loved traveling with her husband. Her favorite pastime, however, was spending time with her family and she will be dearly missed.

She is survived by her children, Patricia of San Francisco, Lloyd (Rita) of Chicago, James (Mary Ann) of Elgin, Jerome (Eneida) of Florida, Kathleen Cooney of Bloomingdale, and Mary Ann (Steve) Smunt of St. Charles; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

bschory@shawmedia.ocm GENEVA – After 42 years at the Geneva Fire Department – including 20 years as the chief – Fire Chief Steve Olson announced his retirement Thursday, effective June 30, according to a news release.

Olson’s retirement follows the recent retirement announcements of Geneva City Administrator Mary McKittrick and Police Chief Steve Mexin.

Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns said Thursday that information about Olson’s replacement would be made Friday.

“Chief Olson has made an indelible impact on the fire department, the city and our community,” Burns said. “He is the epitome of selfless leadership.”

Geneva’s fire department remains the envy of other communities, Burns stated in the release.

“I am proud to have worked alongside such a dedicated public servant, and gratefully acknowledge the many sacrifices he and his family have made over the years,” Burns stated in the release.

Olson was hired in 1974 as a paid on-call firefighter. After being promoted to fire lieutenant in 1978, he joined the department on a full-time basis the following year, according to the release.

His career ascension included being named captain in 1982, deputy fire chief in 1986 and fire chief in 1996. He

oversees a combination department of 26 full-time firefighter/paramedics and more than 40 paid on-call firefighters, the release stated.

Coinciding with the growth of the city, Olson helped bring the fire department into the modern era with the construction of two fire stations, including a new headquarters station and the purchase of updated vehicles and equipment, according to the release.

Olson also initiated a community-based automated external defibrillator program that assisted local businesses and organizations in acquiring the devices along with training, installation and maintenance, according to the release.

Olson developed the successful in-service company inspection program that ensures the department annually inspects all commercial properties and introduced the use of laptop computers in fire vehicles to provide critical building information to responding firefighters and paramedics, according to the release. It added that Olson also helped lead the department through an exhaustive process that resulted in the department becoming an internationally accredited agency in 2001, a status it has successfully maintained through the subsequent 15 years.

A lifelong Geneva resident, he and his wife, Beth, have three daughters, all of whom graduated from Geneva High School.

Geneva woman, 85, critical but stable after being hit by car

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – An 85-year-old Geneva woman was in critical but stable condition Thursday morning after she was struck by a car Tuesday near a shopping center in Geneva.

She was to undergo surgery Thursday, according to an email from Geneva Police Cmdr. Eric Passarelli The woman initially was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva before being flown to Advocate Good Samarian Hospital in Downers Grove, Geneva police reported in a news release.

The accident happened at 7:22 a.m.

Tuesday in the 2500 block of Miller Road. The woman was walking south near the entrance to the Shops of Randall Square, the release states.

According to the release, a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt was traveling east on Miller Road, and the 26-year-old driver, a Geneva man, didn’t see the pedestrian in the road, and the woman was struck by the car.

Geneva police, as well as the Geneva and Batavia fire departments, responded to the scene, which was about 190 feet west of Merchants Drive, the release said.

What an open convention could cost Republicans

Over the last 30 years, every national party convention has been a fully scripted, multiday advertisement for the presidential ticket, which was determined weeks or even months before the delegates gathered.

This time could be different, at least for the Republicans, who could have a real fight on their hands if neither Donald Trump nor Ted Cruz has 1,237 bound and loyal delegates before the convention begins in Cleveland on July 18. In that case, there will be an “open” or “contested” convention, in which the delegates will have to select the nominee – perhaps after extended fights over the rules, the platform and even which delegates legitimately were elected in some states.

Ed Kilgore, who knows the nuts and bolts of the infomercial-style national party conventions of the past, has a terrific piece detailing the mechanics of an actual deliberative, decision-making party convention.

Or, to put it another way: Imagine hours of second-tier Republican politicians speaking unvetted on national television about whatever they want. What could go wrong?

Potentially ugly gaffes aside, however, a central problem with a contested convention is the opportunity cost – the squandering of the chance to unite voters. As John Sides wrote in 2012, conventions tend to bring public opinion in line with the “fundamentals” of the election – that is steer sentiment about such things as the state of the economy and the president’s popularity.

That usually works by delivering enough information to take voters to positions they were going to adopt anyway.

Remember, even in a year with competitive nomination fights in both parties, and in which Donald Trump has received far more attention than any normal candidate, lots of voters haven’t engaged with the

election yet. For example, a little more than 900,000 votes were cast in the Arizona primaries on March 22, far fewer than the 2.3 million cast in the 2012 general election in that state. Those relatively inattentive voters typically have weaker ties to their party or may be independent.

As a result, such voters are less likely to be swayed by purely partisan cues (“Vote Clinton because she’s a Democrat”). However, they may be open to less explicitly partisan approaches – a Democrat (even if she calls herself an independent) may be receptive to rhetoric about diversity, openness and equality.

A Republican (even if he calls himself an independent) may respond to rhetoric about free enterprise and tough foreign policy.

So when a party convention delivers several days of information about the nominee, many of the least-attentive voters tune in enough to identify the candidate with the qualities they like. In short, the typical convention achieves one campaign effect that political scientists have found really does matter in presidential elections: matching moderately (or less) attentive voters with candidates.

Even a messy Republican convention with no clear winner until the end could deliver that effect.

Ultimately, conventions always present the nominee as a winner – and that will be the case at the end of an extremely contentious process, too.

Still, it’s also possible that the convention effect will be diluted if the signal is muted – say, if instead of delivering several days of praise for the nominee, the gathering showcases several days of infighting and intrigue. In that event, we simply don’t know whether the unifying effect would be delayed to some other point in the election cycle.

As recruiting heats up for Class of 2017 athletes, two-way lineman Isaac Hawn and receiver Griffin Hammer both expect and hope to make a decision on their future before their senior football seasons begin Hammer has offers from – in no particular interest order – Western Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Toledo, Wyoming, Central Michigan, Illinois and Ball State. “You got to love it,” Hammer said of going through the recruitment process. “It’s pretty interesting learning about each school, and the pros and cons of each one. I’m not really leaning one way or another, yet. I’m still waiting to see and go over all my options and see how it pans out.”

The 6-foot-4 Hammer, who hauled in a team-high 35 catches for 463 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior in 2015, didn’t give an exact date range for his decision, but Hawn would like to have a decision by July.

He also has a few more options, as of Thursday. Hawn, a 6-6, 270-pound lineman, has a total of 15 offers, with several others visits and interested schools in the wings.

Hawn’s offers include those from Army, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Columbia, Cornell, Eastern Michigan, Harvard, Illinois, Illinois State, Miami (Ohio), New Mexico, Northern Illinois, Princeton, Western Michigan and Wyoming. He also has visited Minnesota, Duke and North Carolina State.

“It’s an honor to meet all of the coaches,” Hawn said. “To learn about their programs is helping me find the best fit for me. I think it’s still very open at this point, but, like I said, I just want to make sure I find the best fit for me, wherever that may be.”

It was a feeling Zach Kirby knew well.

Two years ago, as a freshman at North Central College, Kirby was a NCAA Division III men’s track and field All-American. But the St. Charles North grad wasn’t sure he’d get back to the national spotlight his junior season alongside an inexperienced group of teammates.

When the North Central 4x400 meter relay team finished fifth in 3:18.88 at the Division III indoor nationals March 12 at Grinnell College in Iowa, Kirby became an All-American for the second time.

Salisbury University (Maryland) won the event with a time of 3:16.69.

The Cardinals enter the outdoor season ranked No. 6 in D-III men’s track and field by the National Team Computer Rankings released Tuesday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

North Central opens its outdoor season at Saturday’s Wheaton College Invitational.

“It felt awesome to be an All-American again,” said Kirby, whose relay squad includes Batavia alumnus Peyton Piron, Daniel Spaccapaniccia and Ben Nordman. “I knew we had a strong team, but that we were young.

We knew we wanted to go after it hard to see if we had what it takes.

Our team motto is ‘Compete and have fun.’ We let everything else go and just focused on the process and it paid off.”

With Piron among three underclassmen on the Cardinals’ 4x400 team, Kirby has taken the leadership mantle and payed forward the lessons he learned in his first two seasons in the program.

The Cardinals had posted the seventh-fastest time in the nation headed into the meet. Because of their practice habits, Kirby said they were able to execute on the big stage.

“Experience is so important,” Kirby said. “When I was a freshman, the guys took me under their wing.

They taught me when to move in a race and when to compete. I learned to visualize when to make a move in the race. This isn’t high school and you can’t get by on talent alone. It starts in practice where every day during workouts, a different person is taught how to lead. When we get to a meet we are all confident because we’ve done it so many times before in practice.”

When Piron trains, he does so with a mature approach. As he prepared for

As the race draws to a close, Piron feels his best moments have yet to happen.

“I’ve always had the kick, the extra gear to shift into,” said Piron, a freshman who played football and ran track for his father, Dennis, who doubles as coach of both sports at Batavia. “When I reach 300 meters, something just gets into me. I get a rush of adrenaline or some hulk strength. At nationals, I never got boxed in or trapped. I kicked like I had

been doing since my sophomore year in high school.”

Even though Kirby and Piron’s high school teams compete in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division, their paths never crossed during their prep days because there’s a two-year grade level gap. Today, their relationship runs deep after Kirby hosted Piron’s campus visits.

“At North Central, we are built upon tradition,” said Kirby, who also played football and basketball at North and one year of football at North Central. “We’ve got a whole new ballgame now that we are outdoors. We’ve got to deal with the

weather and all new teams. We are ready to hit the ground running.

The indoor season was a confidence builder for us. We know what we can do. There’s no pressure, we like to compete and there’s no better sport to do that in than track and field.”

Both Kirby and Piron said they hope to improve upon their fifth-place finish in the outdoor season. They’ve still got two years together to better the mark.

Hawks scouting official bullish on USHL

kdruley@shawmedia.com Blackhawks vice president of amateur scouting Mark Kelley realizes many United States Hockey League players still are in their teens, but he equates the USHL with college hockey, anyway.

“We think the league meets the players’ development needs,” Kelley said, “and by that, I mean it gives players a time to develop at their own pace.

“The league’s evolved quite a bit. …

The quality of the play, the quality of the coaching, the stature of the franchise, the stature of the league as a whole. I think now, it matches up with any junior league across the planet.”

The lone tier I junior hockey league in the United States, the USHL descended upon Geneva’s Fox Valley Ice Arena during the summer of 2015 when the Chicago Steel relocated from The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

Beginning with today’s 7:30 p.m. against Bloomington, the Steel will play five of their final six regular-season games in Geneva.

Could fans be watching a pro prospect in their midst? It’s likely. More than 95 percent of USHL players compete for NCAA Division I men’s hock-

ey programs, and some are drafted by NHL teams before entering the college ranks.

One such case is Dennis Gilbert, a Notre Dame freshman defenseman the Blackhawks selected in the third round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft after Gilbert spent the 2014-15 season with the Steel.

“We spent a lot of time watching him last year,” Kelley said. “It was convenient being right in Chicago. ..

It’s convenient to have a team in Chicago, and I think it’s important for the league to have a presence in Chicago.”

Long drive, quick bond: Defenseman Jared Hippman, a Joliet Catholic senior from Bolingbrook, commutes longer than most teammates when the Geneva-based Cyclones Amateur Hockey Association Midget 18U club team practices or plays at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

After accumulating multiple seasons with the team, however, he feels nearly as close as the core group of players who have skated with one another since their developmental days.

This week’s Youth Tier II national tournament in Amherst, New York, forged the team together for another run, as well.

“Just having the feeling that, ‘Hey, we’re going to nationals with the best

16 teams in the nation right now,’ you know,” Hippman said. “I mean, we have the chance to be national champions. Yeah, it’s going to be awesome.”

Small world: Fox Valley Ice Arena counts a handful of tenants, with the Steel becoming the latest one during the summer of 2015.

True to the credo that the hockey community is a small community, there’s an interesting overlap at South Elgin High School, where Cyclones winger Derek Struwing shares classes with some of the Steel players who attend school there while staying with billet families.

“They’re good guys. … I mean, everybody’s heard of them,” Struwing said. “Everybody as school says hi, that kind of thing. They seem to be geared for hockey.”

Six Steel players are enrolled in Fox Valley high schools after roster moves streamlined that total in February. Forward Alex Frye, a South Elgin junior from Michigan, is the youngest of the group.

Frye’s billet dad, Brian Guevara, coaches a Cyclones squirt team and works with goalies throughout the program.

“He knows what the hockey life is about, so he’s pretty understanding about it,” Frye said.

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina – The trio of Aly Jesionowski, Courtney Davis and Meg Cohrs combined for a no-hitter, as the Kaneland girls softball team defeated Princeton, 19-5, in five innings to close out its trip to Myrtle Beach on Wednesday.

Davis and Hannah Theobald combined to go 7 for 9 with a double and seven RBIs for the Knights (5-2).

In other action in Myrtle Beach, the Kaneland baseball team picked up its first victory of the season by beating Myrtle Beach (South Carolina), 4-3. The Flannigan Rifles Drill Team at Marmion Academy in Aurora placed first in the Cpt. Homer L. Clendenen Memorial Drill Meet, which took place March 19 and 20 at Concordia Lutheran High School in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

Led by this year’s team commander, John Callahan of Geneva, and executive officer, Jake Miller of West Chicago, the Flannigan Rifles won the event for the 11th time, taking the coveted Commander’s Trophy for the third consecutive year. In the Armed Division, Callahan accepted the first-place Champion’s Trophy for the team. Miller was awarded first place for Top Overall Commander of the entire meet.

The Armed Regulation Platoon, commanded by Miller, placed first; Armed Exhibition (X) Squad, commanded by John Tate of St. Charles, placed second; Armed X Platoon, commanded by Julian Chaney of Montgomery, placed first; and the Armed Color Guard, commanded by Callahan, placed third.

Technique relieves muscle tension Dear Dr. K: A friend mentioned something called the Alexander Technique, which is supposed to help relieve tension. Can you tell me more about it?

Dear Reader: I didn’t know much about the Alexander Technique until I received your question. So I did some homework. I consulted with Dr. Eva Selhub, who is an internal medicine doctor and clinical associate at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine.

The Alexander Technique is named for a Shakespearean actor named Frederick Matthias Alexander. In the 1890s, he set out to discover why he often lost his voice when he performed. He realized onstage, he contracted the muscles in his upper body so strongly his entire posture changed. He wondered if his voice loss could result from his disrupted posture.

His guess turned out to be correct. When he was able to release the tension in his muscles with a variety of movements, his voice loss resolved. He also was able to change his habit of contracting his neck.

These discoveries have been codified into the Alexander Technique (AT). Today, AT teaches people how to let go of tension in the body. This enables the body to move with ease and minimal effort.

AT is used to treat a variety of conditions, from musculoskeletal pain and breathing problems to voice loss and sleep disorders. Many musicians, dancers, singers and actors use AT to help enhance their performance.

You don’t have to be a performer to benefit. For example, just using your smartphone frequently can cause problems that may benefit from the technique. Here’s what I mean: Your vertebrae were designed to support your head looking straight ahead. But if you constantly look down to check your smart-

AT can teach you how hold your phone and how to position your head. Ultimately, you will learn to re-establish better posture and ease in your body.

Research supports the use of AT to help treat neck and back pain. One recent study found AT lessons led to significant reductions in neck pain over 12 months, compared with usual care. Another study found AT lessons plus exercise helped relieve chronic or recurrent back pain more effectively than standard care or massage.

If you’re interested in AT lessons, the American Society for the Alexander Technique can help you find an instructor.

In addition, many complementary and alternative medicine practices have therapists familiar with the technique. If not, they usually can route you to people in your community who can help.

Some doctors have dismissed the Alexander Technique because they label it “alternative” medicine. However, other doctors have subjected it to scientific evaluation – and found it valuable. That’s the more reasonable and constructive approach to any medical practice, when a large number of people have found it has helped them.

you and your boyfriend to look beyond your mother’s experience and perhaps seek spiritual counseling. If you want to build a life with your boyfriend, the next step to take is marriage.

Dr. Wallace: I made a huge mistake by leaving my diary on my dresser when I went to school last week. In it I wrote about my first experience with my boyfriend. When I came home from school, both parents were waiting for me. My mother pulled my hair, and my dad called me filthy names. Now I’m grounded for a long time and not allowed to see my boyfriend any more.

I can accept these decisions, but now both my mother and father are calling me names so filthy I can’t tell you what they are. I admit I made a huge mistake when I lost my virginity, but being all but abandoned by my parents is very difficult for me to accept. Please help me. –

West, not deaf to the auction, led the heart six. East won with his jack (bottom of touching honors when playing third hand high), cashed his ace and king, then led his last heart.

What should South have done?

Who had the spade queen? The clue was East’s initial pass. If he had the spade queen as well as all those heart honors, he surely would have opened the bidding. So South ruffed the fourth heart with his spade ace, then ran the spade jack through West. When the finesse worked, declarer took a second spade finesse, drew West’s last trump, and claimed.
