’ve had the opportunity during the last few weeks to get a behind-thescenes look at the Chicago Steel USHL team, which is now based at the Fox Valley Ice Arena in Geneva.

After visits with players and their billet families, attending school for a couple of hours with players Jake Nielsen and Austen Long, and going to a practice and a

couple of games, it all culminates in the Kane County Chronicle’s two-day series about the team, which will appear in the newspaper today and tomorrow.

I also got this bird’s-eye view of goalie Daniel Vladar waiting to take the ice before a game.

I learned that – above all – hockey is a family sport.

And the Steel is definitely a familyfriendly team.

Everyone is involved, and you almost need the entire family to lift one player’s hockey equipment bag.

Dewey Dash 5K event to use baseball theme

alagattolla@shawmedia.com ELBURN – The Town and Country Public Library’s annual 5K run will feature a baseball theme this year.

The library’s Dewey Dash is set for April 10 at the library, 320 E. North St., Elburn. A 1-mile event starts at 8:30 a.m., and the 5K follows at 9 a.m. Onsite registration starts at 7:30 a.m. Registration in advance will be done online at www.active.com. A link is available at the library’s website, www.elburn. lib.il.us.

The cost is $24 for the 5K. For the mile, the cost is $22 for those 18 and older and $12 for those 17 and younger.

The theme will be “Book It Around the Bases.” Glenn Kahmann, the library’s director, said participants are welcome to dress to match the event’s theme, but he noted it isn’t required.

The event features signs featuring quotes along the route, and Kahmann said those quotes will have a baseball theme.

Each year, the event serves as a fundraiser to help pay for improvements at the library. Kahmann said this year’s proceeds will go toward three new circulation computers and also for wireless device charging stations for use by patrons.

The event also features a spread of food for participants after the race.

Kahmann said that will continue. A new food vendor this year will be Jimmy John’s sandwiches, he said.

Kahmann started in his role last month, replacing longtime director Mary Lynn Alms. Alms and youth services director Dwayne Nelson retired on the same day last month. Kahmann said the search for a new youth services director is underway.

LOCAL BRIEFS St. George Catholic Church to host iconography workshop

AURORA – St. George Byzantine Catholic Church in Aurora is hosting an iconography workshop April 11 through 15 at the church, 720 Rural St., Aurora.

This is an introduction to the liturgical art of the Christian East by iconographer Phil Zimmerman.

There will be two icons offered during this workshop. Saints Cosmas and Damian, two brothers who were healing saints, and The Soul of Mary, an 18th century Spanish colonial retablo with a wood and gold leaf frame.

Painting and presentations will be held each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Great artistic talent is not required, and supplies are included in the $300 registration fee.

The registration deadline is Monday, April 4, but interested participants should register immediately as space is limited.

Registrants do not have to be parishioners of St. George.

Congressional Art Competition coming to 14th District students

CAMPTON HILLS – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, has announced the start of the 2016 Congressional Art Competition for high school students from the 14th District of Illinois.

The winner’s artwork will hang in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., for an entire year.

Each winner also receives a roundtrip ticket to Washington. Last year, Drake Swift of Batavia was chosen as the winner from the 14th District.

Entries for the competition are being accepted and must be submitted to Hultgren’s district office by April 15. The entry needs to be framed only if it is selected as the winner to be hung in the U.S. Capitol. The district office is at 40W310 Lafox Road, No. F2, Campton Hills.

Parents give St. Charles District 303 seeks input on St. Charles’ middle schools schools high marks KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE editorial@kcchronicle.com

ST. CHARLES – Parents have given St. Charles School District 303 its highest marks yet.

In the district’s annual parent satisfaction survey, 88 percent of the responses indicated parents were either “mostly” or “very” satisfied with their child’s school, according to a press release.

This tops the previous record of 86 percent, which was recorded in the 2014-15 year, the release states. It noted this was the fourth time in the last seven years that District 303 has reached a new high score in parent satisfaction.

Additionally, the release states, the number of responses – 2,504 – was the second-highest total since the survey began in the 1992-93 school year.

In the release, Superintendent Don Schlomann thanked the parents who took the time to complete the survey.

“While this is not a scientific survey, the high volume of responses brings us a valuable amount of data,

especially when parents take the time to add additional comments,” he stated in the release. “I read every comment that is generated by this survey.”

At the high school level, 87 percent of parents indicated they were “mostly” or “very” satisfied with their child’s school – eight points up from last year, according to the release. The release states the previous high score was 80 percent and recorded in the 2013-14 year.

The middle schools got 89 percent of parents indicating they were “mostly” or “very” satisfied, up from the previous high score of 88 percent in 2014-15, the release states.

The elementary schools scored 88 percent – the record high – for the second consecutive year, according to the release.

The survey was conducted through the district’s website during the week of Dec. 7 to 16. All District 303 parents were asked to complete a survey at the proper grade level for each of their children who attend the district’s schools.

ST. CHARLES – Community members will soon have their chance to weigh in on St. Charles’ middle schools.

St. Charles School District 303 announced in a news release this week it will conduct three Summit 303 community meetings in April that are focused on facility issues at the middle schools.

The meetings are set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 14 at Thompson Middle School, 705 W. Main St.; April 18 at Haines Middle School, 305 S. Ninth St.; and April 21 at Wredling Middle School, 1200 Dunham Road, all in St. Charles.

“The purpose of the meetings is to gather community input on how the District 303 community can address middle school building shortcomings, such as outdated science labs, lack of air-conditioned classrooms, small cafeterias and aging mobile classrooms,” the release stated.

It noted the meetings will contain

the same content and may be attended by anyone in the community.

The school board is seeking to reduce the number of middle schools to two, which would annually save the district about $2.4 million in operational savings, according to the release.

It noted that the consolidation is made possible by declining student enrollment.

“Further, this consolidation could also require approval of additional funds through a bond referendum, which would be offset by the expiration of current bonds in 2018, and would still allow for taxpayers to see a reduction in the District 303 portion of their property tax bill,” the release stated.

The meetings will include a presentation about the middle school issues and will be followed by small group work in which participants determine how those issues might be resolved, according to the release.

The feedback will be presented to the school board on April 25, the release stated.

GENEVA – Geneva High School’s Robovikes team will be competing from April 1 to 4 in the Midwest Regional at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago.

It recently competed in the Iowa Regional at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls.

This year’s game is called First Stronghold, a medieval tower defender game. The Label Printers in Aurora will sponsor the Geneva team.

The Geneva Chamber of Commerce hosted a reception for new members March 22 at the Geneva Public Library.

GENEVA – For the fifth consecutive year, the Geneva Park District received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association for its comprehensive annual financial report, according to a news release.

The certificate of achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, the release stated.

“The district is extremely proud of this prestigious award and will continue to work to provide financial reports that demonstrate fiscal responsibility and transparency,”

Christy Powell, the park district’s superintendent of finance and personnel, stated in the release.

Governments are encouraged to go beyond minimum requirements to have comprehensive annual financial reports that reflect the spirit of transparency and full disclosure, according to the finance officers’ website, gfoa.org. Individual governments that succeed in achieving that goal are recognized.

The program’s goal is not to assess the financial health of participating governments, but to ensure that users of their financial statements have the information they need to do so themselves, according to the website.

GENEVA – Geneva Public Library officials closed Thursday on the purchase of the Sixth Street School property from Kane County, according to a news release.

Library board members had voted unanimously to purchase the two-acre parcel at 210 S. Sixth St., Geneva, for $1.5 million, plus $416,500 to cover the demolition cost for the former school building.

The building was razed last fall, according to the release.

“Purchasing this land is necessary for ensuring the library can grow and evolve to meet the needs of the community,” board President Bob Shiffler stated in the release. “Our goal is to provide a flexible, accessible and ef-

ficient facility, where the community can gather and that will support lifelong learning in an ever-changing environment.”

A company hired by library officials, StudioGC, will begin a preliminary building program to determine square footage opportunities for expanded library services at the Sixth Street site.

The board will share information as it becomes available, according to the release.

In spring 2015, the board began planning for the library’s future through a community-wide survey and six focus groups. Residents’ top concerns included having enough onsite parking; new and expanded services such as collaborative learning spaces, digital media creation and imaginative play space; more meet-

Costs prompt rowing club to break from forest preserve

asloboda@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A rowing club is abandoning plans to build facilities at a St. Charles Township forest preserve – a plan that neighbors publicly opposed.

The Saint Charles Rowing Club planned to someday move from shared facilities at Ferson Creek Park in St. Charles to Fox River Bluff East, which is near St. Charles North High School.

An agreement with the Kane County Forest Preserve allowed the nonprofit organization to make improvements at the site, such as installing docks and creating an asphalt drive and parking lot.

SHAW MEDIA A federal judge overseeing Dennis Hastert’s hush-money case has granted prosecutors’ request to delay the former U.S. House speaker’s sentencing until the end of next month, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

Judge Thomas M. Durkin has scheduled Hastert’s sentencing for at 10 a.m. April 27 at the Dirksen Federal Court building in Chicago.

Objections in the case must be filed

by April 8, according to the AP. Hastert’s sentencing was previously scheduled for April 8.

Food for thought: Marquette price “Geneva Say NO to MARQUETTE Apartments.”

These yard signs have blossomed on Geneva lawns. A proposal to fill the razed Cetron factory space and beyond with Marquette apartments and retail stores has residents railing about an invasion more threatening than an alien spacecraft.

A park would be nice, but the land promises revenue-rich income for the city. So why did the phalanx of people objecting to Marquette on March 10 need a venue large enough to accommodate a Donald Trump rally?

With all the pushback, why did Marquette Companies, according to published reports, keep most parts of the five-story building intact, merely lowering the height five feet, and cutting only 17 apartments and 16 parking spaces?

That’s like taking the letter T off TRUMP on the tower; it only pumps up the rumpus.

More questions fester.

The Marquette project will rise less than half a block or so from Geneva’s historic district, near Peyton and 6th streets. Even though not bad looking, do we really want something as big as the behemoths contiguous to I-88 squatting in downtown Geneva, which zoning changes need to accommodate?

Couldn’t Marquette at least shrink its total design to three stories – keeping the 200 units they said they need to be financially solvent – by placing the parking underground?

Moreover, although a traffic study reports Marquette’s impact would be minimal, why do letters to the plan commission strenuously question those findings?

Then there’s Marquette’s potential for generating the projected property tax revenue. Can they attract the targeted millennials with incomes over $75,000, willing to pay about $1,500 to $2,000 monthly rent? Are there enough area jobs to keep them local? They might commute, but would Pop-Tart popping young people, who a study showed didn’t eat cereal because it took too much work to prepare, train or drive to the city?

What about alternative designs,

RIVER TOWN CHRONICLES Rick Holinger like townhomes with garages backing up to an alley? Or attractive two-story apartments for retirees, baby boomers leaving their houses for more affluent families to enjoy?

Maybe Marquette won’t consider such low-density designs because they wouldn’t generate enough needed revenue to pay for studies of the property’s possible toxicity and presumed remediation. Might a Geneva library study already exist, showing cleanup financially formidable, a reason the library abandoned the site? Could the bank foreclosing on the property have the study tucked away, impervious to FOIA requests?

Most importantly, do aldermen hear their constituents’ uproar? Should our representatives cave to their leader(s), regardless of deafening objections?

Michael Olesen, Geneva restaurant and tavern owner opines: “The people, collectively, know what is best for the community. They have made it clear that the scale and scope of Marquette is not the best fit for Geneva. The city must recognize, acknowledge and respect its citizens’ concerns.”

Finally, could the foremost reason for Marquette revolve around the city wanting to seize home rule in order to increase the general fund? Is it only coincidence that the Marquette project would spike the population toward that sought-after, golden, 25,000-citizen ticket?

Question: Do those encouraging Marquette have ulterior motives? If so, Genevans can rightly protest, “This little piggy went to Marquette.”

Paul Ryan, bystander THE WASHINGTON POST

Declaring that “we shouldn’t accept ugliness as the norm,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, delivered a fine speech Wednesday on the tenor of the nation’s politics, calling on political leaders, as well as ordinary Americans, to aspire to a more reasonable debate. Unfortunately, Ryan did not directly confront the chief threat to that goal: GOP front-runner Donald Trump.

Ryan’s lofty oratory alone will not clean him or his party of Trump’s moral tarnish.

On their own, Ryan’s words were quite commendable. He argued the business of political leaders was to propose policies and put the quality of their ideas to the test. He warned against “playing to your anxieties” or “playing the identity politics of ‘our base’ and ‘their base.’ ” He said politicians should not “resort to scaring you,” and Americans should not presume that those who disagree with them do so in bad faith.

He also admitted he was wrong to write off a large piece of the country as “takers” in the 2012 presidential election.

Unfortunately, the nation’s political discourse has deteriorated considerably since 2012. There may be many reasons for this, including large structural and demographic forces to which politicians respond

but over which they have limited control. Yet there is little doubt that Trump has not only exploited emerging divisions but also enthusiastically pried them open.

While Ryan warns against playing identity politics and appealing to people’s anxieties, Trump this week continued to exploit fear of Muslims and illegal immigrants, calling to “close up our borders,” warning that immigrants “could be ISIS” and arguing, with scant evidence, that the Belgium terrorist attack might have been prevented if Western authorities had tortured a captured extremist.

While Ryan calls for focusing on substance, Trump has run a uniquely substanceless campaign, telling us Monday that his solution to inner-city poverty was “giving them spirit.” While Ryan attacks gutter politics, Trump defended his comments on the size of his hands and other organs by saying he “had to do it” because Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, “started it.”

Given the gaping divergence between Ryan and Trump on essential civic values, it is a wonder that these two men remain in the same party.

It is more than a wonder – it is a shame – that Ryan has not repudiated Trump and promised to oppose him.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

St. Charles North girls water polo coach Nick Engel said it plain and simple. He has built his team around playing aggressive defense and forcing other teams into mistakes, which is the exact mentality the North Stars carried into Thursday’s contest against St. Charles East.

North scored the game’s final two goals in the third quarter and, after a scoreless final frame, defeated the host Saints, 6-4.

“You can always play good defense,” Engel said. “No matter how gifted physically you are, it’s about giving that extra effort. Offense can come and Through 13 matches this season, go throughout the season, but we pride ourselves on our defense.”

North (8-5) has allowed five or more

goals just twice, one being a hardfought defeat at the hands of Naper-

ville North, 5-4, on Wednesday.

Engel was happy to see his team bounce back just before its 12-day layoff during spring break.

“It was nice to see the girls finish today,” Engel said. “It could have been easy to be down after the loss yesterday, but I’m glad the girls came ready to play.”

East (5-4) wasn’t completely out of the contest, actually leading, 2-1, and seeing the game tied at four with under two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Saints coach Stephanie Ter Bush has seen her team progress as the season has gone on and was very proud of the way East adapted to the flow of the game.

“I think it took us a little bit, especially defensively, to get into the game,” Ter Bush said. “I think once our defense got settled, we were able to contain them much better. We usually have very good, strong shooters and I think today was just an off day for us.”

Steel’s high school set balances course load, junior hockey away from home

kdruley@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Chicago Steel left wing Max Zimmer graduated early from Wheaton North in January, earning fanfare among younger teammates if not an organist’s celebratory rendition of “Pomp and Circumstance.”

“It’s definitely been a challenge,” said Zimmer, a Falcon by way of Medina, Minnesota, “but I think over the years, I’ve kind of realized that you have to put just as much time into school as you do into hockey.”

Welcome to Zimmer’s recently bygone world, one that still shelters six members of the Geneva-based Steel of the United States Hockey League and presents time management obstacles as harrowing as a 5-on-3 penalty kill.

bus ride to or from a road game, or save it for Sunday? Eat lunch in the car during the commute from school to Fox Valley Ice Arena, or chow down during the few minutes at your locker before practice starts?

There are no wrong choices, simply a bevy of them, each one weighed against separate but equally long-standing missions that routinely uproot players from home at a young age.

“I’ve been dreaming of playing at a higher level since I was, like, 5,” said center Alex Frye, a South Elgin junior.

“I’ve always been real into hockey.”

Although Frye lives locally with his billet family, the Guevaras of West Chicago, he hails from Clarkston, Michigan, a village between Flint and Detroit. A USHL opportunity provided the pull for leaving home. The United States’ lone tier-I junior hockey league

affords more than 95 percent of its players the opportunity to play NCAA Division I hockey, climbing one step closer to a chance at the NHL. Frye speaks with his parents daily and sees them during occasional visits for Steel home games, or when the club plays in Plymouth, Michigan, about a 45-minute drive from Clarkston.

Although juggling a course load before early afternoon practice occupies enough time for the Steel’s high school set, the team realizes building a bond with its billet, or host, families helps soothe the crunch, not add to it.

Frank Binetti of Geneva and his wife, Laura, have housed Steel forward and Geneva senior Jake Nielsen since before the season started in late September. Binetti beams when discussing the effect of that development on his children – 13-year-old son

Tino, 10-year-old daughter Gianna and 6-year-old twin sons Luca and Frankie.

All but Gianna play for Fox Valley Ice Arena-based Cyclones Amateur Hockey Association club teams.

“At first it was, ‘Wow, we’ve got this big star hockey player living downstairs,’ ” Frank Binetti said. “Now it’s kind of moved to more of a brother-sister type of relationship. They’ll razz each other back and forth. It’s a comfortable feeling for my kids with him.

Even though he’s a USHL hockey player, really, they don’t see that anymore.

All they really see is a bigger brother at this point.”

Nielsen, from the Milwaukee suburb of New Berlin, Wisconsin, possesses another item befitting an older sibling: a car. In addition to an airtight resolve, it’s an all-too-valuable tool for Steel players.

The Kane County Chronicle is taking a closer look at Chicago Steel junior hockey players in high school in a two-part series. Today focuses on the players’ daily lives. Part two on Saturday will focus on their interactions with billet families.

to campus, the trio often walks to visit guidance counselor Amy Winslow, with whom each remains close.

That’s the luxury for players who have spent most of the season with the Steel. Recent acquisition Austen Long, who began the season with Tri-City (Nebraska), has experienced a crash course in assimilation since joining the team and the Geneva student body in February.

Long’s curriculum includes history, personal finance and English along with PE and a study hall. He shares several classes with Nielsen and calls that an extreme benefit. Having a familiar face around only augmented the transition from Kearney (Nebraska) High School, which, unlike Geneva, uses the block schedule.

“They sent my transcripts over, and I just started fresh,” Long said.

First-year Steel housing coordinator Erin Keohane works as a liaison between school districts, players and the Steel to ensure such seamlessness.

For the past three seasons, the Riverside-based Keohane formed a billet family with her husband, Brian, and four children when the Steel operated from The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

Naturally, Keohane is well-versed in scrambling, too. The Steel relocated from Bensenville to Geneva during the summer, played a preseason tournament in Russia soon after and did not have a full staff in place until 18 days before the season opener.

That’s not exactly the ideal situation for preliminary meetings between players and prospective billet families, nor for a high school student to get accustomed to new surround-

ings before classes start. Keohane already had a working relationship with South Elgin and Wheaton North from past Steel seasons but was glad to find cooperation from Geneva School District 304 and West Aurora School District 129.

In future seasons, she hopes to add St. Charles School District 303, which Keohane said is rife with Cyclones families who could benefit from hosting young role models for their own children.

“We definitely have learned a lot in how to handle the school situation and what the kids absolutely must come with to get it rolling sooner than later,” Keohane said. “Because you don’t want the kids to miss school. They’re going to miss so much with just the travel schedule alone.”

Tuesday’s visit to Waterloo (Iowa) marked the sixth and final of the Steel’s weekday games this season, but – as players attest – competing in the late afternoon on a Sunday before a multi-hour bus trip takes a toll, too.

If need be, the bus doubles as a study room before players carouse or recharge their batteries.

“A lot of people don’t think of it that aren’t playing the game; they don’t think about the academics part, but it’s actually a really big deal,” said Kiersted, a resident of Elk River, Minnesota. “Coach Muse will check in with us weekly, see how our grades are and see how school is going. If you don’t have good grades, you won’t be able to play in college, which is where most of us are heading in the next few years.

It’s good to have a head start on it in high school.”

He considered himself lucky.

Many players Muse now coaches for the Chicago Steel don’t enjoy that luxury, which behooves the 33-yearold father of two young daughters to extend his off-ice tutelage, too.

“We try to establish a pretty opendoor policy here with the players,” Muse said. “I think that’s important at this level, where they feel comfortable not just asking me questions, but asking anybody on our coaching staff questions.”

Unlike assistants Dallas Steward, 36, and Peter Mannino, 32, Muse did not play in the United States Hockey League, which affords more than 95 percent of its players the opportunity to compete in NCAA Division I men’s hockey.

Although that reality might steer some Steel athletes elsewhere in the locker room, Muse certainly maintains an authority on the college game, having served as a Yale assistant for six seasons before joining Chicago this summer.

Muse recalls a few conversations with players about the rigors of being away from home, but largely finds most of the roster is comfortable with it. A healthy helping of weekend games allow families to come watch their children.

“In comparison to other sports, yeah, junior hockey is unique in terms of the sports. You don’t see that [separation],” Muse said. “Football, basketball, you might see post-graduate years at prep schools or private schools, but you don’t have anything like this in any other sport.

“It’s also, though, it’s a culture that these players grow up in. They know that that’s one of the levels they’re striving to. Whether it’s high school or midget hockey, you know, this is kind of that next step, so they see that coming. It’s not a surprise when they get here. These guys, prior to getting here, they were working hard to be able to get to this level.”

Which only creates plenty of shop talk in the locker room.

“When you get a chance to pull a guy aside and tell him a little story here or there, you hope it rubs off and allows him to see what he can get to,” said Mannino, a former goaltender with six career NHL appearances. “It’s a lot of fun. This game’s a lot of fun.”

Having personal transportation allowed Nielsen to visit home for a few days this month when coach Dan Muse awarded the Steel a weekend off amid an especially grueling stretch in the 60-game regular-season schedule. More than that, however, it keeps Nielsen mobile during fluid weekdays in which he must attend classes at Geneva until shortly after noon, commute to Fox Valley Ice Arena for practice, then return home to eat dinner, finish homework and, if time permits, unwind.

The car also is handy when Nielsen can allow himself to spread his social wings. He attended a few Geneva boys basketball games during the season after meeting a Vikings player or two in his physical education class.

“It’s been fun,” Nielsen said. “I’ve made a couple more friends than I had earlier in the school year, hung out with them outside of school.”

True to the accelerated maturation level he must harness to balance his busy lifestyle, Nielsen also works well with adults.

“I get on a personal level with my teachers because of how much [class] we miss, so I’m always communicating with them when I’m going to leave, what assignments I’m going to get done,” Nielsen said. “Most teachers know me around the halls.”

At West Aurora, the administration is familiar with its three Steel players, too, and not because of any routine roughhousing.

Kaneland’s returners out for more success

ecarifio@shawmedia.com MAPLE PARK – The Kaneland softball team started the new season without pitcher Angie Morrow and catcher Paige Kuefler, and with a new coach, Mike Kuefler.

That’s something of a shake-up from the Knights’ IHSA Class 3A third-place finisher in 2015, but neither graduation nor transition seems to faze the current group.

“All of these girls are still hungry and every one of them still has that common goal,” Mike Kuefler said.

“Enough of them tasted that trip downstate last year that even for the newcomers, they understand what these girls want to do.”

Kuefler, a former program assistant, said he’s not looking to change much about what the team does. He’s coached travel teams for the past 10 years, five as a head coach.

said, have played for his travel team at one point.

The other change will be in the circle, where Courtney Davis takes over for Morrow, a Wisconsin freshman who went 15-2 with a 1.34 ERA with 140 strikeouts in 110 innings in 2015.

“It’s definitely going to be a lot of work, and we have a large game schedule, so it will be a lot of games,” Davis said. “There’s a little nerves, but I’m excited mostly.”

Meg Cohrs led the 2015 Knights with 10 home runs, 38 RBIs and a 1.526 OPS while hitting .443 as the team’s third baseman.

“She’s non-stop bat,” Mike Kuefler said. “We’ve leaned on her for three years now; we’re looking forward to that fourth one.”

Cohrs said this season’s Knights squad is capable of matching the run of the 2015 team.

“I think we can go as far as we did last year because I’m confident in our team,” Cohrs said.

North Stars in seventh heaven Stars hit defensive quota in their win

editorial@kcchronicle.com ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles North boys water polo team’s lucky number is seven, according to its coach, Chris Cloy.

It was true on Thursday afternoon.

Not only was seven the number of goals the host North Stars allowed in their 12-7 win over St. Charles East, but in addition, it was the cap number of North’s leading scorer – Nathan Bawolek, who found the net five times.

“The boys have a goal of giving up only seven goals in a game. Seven or under is their magic number,” Cloy said. “We hit it right on the head today.

It has shown in the last several years, that if we give up only seven goals, we put ourselves in a position to win some games.”

North also reclaimed hometown

boys water polo bragging rights. Last season, the Saints squeaked out a 7-6, double overtime victory over the North Stars.

“It was a fantastic win,” said North’s Sam Lilly, who scored three goals. “It was a painful loss last year, so it is nice to bring it back around this year.”

The North Stars (3-7) used a stifling defense to force Saints turnovers.

“Coach Cloy always says that the defense leads to the offense,” Bawolek said. “I think that was the biggest part.

We played a good, strong press defense and caused turnovers, which led to goals.”

North also capitalized on East fouls, scoring four goals on power plays.

“The 6-on-5 is something we worked on the last two weeks in practice and going in on four out of five [power plays] today was a really good way to jump start our spring break,” Cloy said.

The North Stars (3-7) scored first on Zachary Smith’s goal at the 6:07 mark of the first quarter.

East’s Andrew Roberge responded nine

seconds later with the first of his four goals to tie the game, 1-1.

Jack Williams regained the lead for North with the team’s first power play goal with 5:17 left in the first quarter.

Bawolek scored three more times to give the North Stars a 5-2 lead after the first period.

North scored four goals to East’s one in the second period for a 9-3 lead at halftime. Lilly scored two of his three goals in the quarter.

East (6-2) tightened up its defense in the second half, giving up only two goals, but was only able to score one.

Ethan Braham scored for the Saints with 14 seconds left in the third quarter, but Noth still led, 11-4, entering the fourth.

“We’re playing with a different lineup today because we are missing a few people,” said East coach Tim O’Grady.

“When that happens, it takes a little bit of time to adjust.”

The Saints scored three goals in the last three minutes of the match, two on power plays, to end the scoring.

Part of the off day for East shooters was thanks in large part to that North defensive pressure, led by nine steals from Brittany Veto.

The senior stayed with two of East’s better shooters in juniors Sarah Sandecki and Sienna Schulte. The pair combined for two of the Saints’ three goals, but joined the entire East attack in struggling to find a rhythm Thursday.

“I think both teams played strong defense,” Ter Bush said. “Our shooters

had an off day today, and that happens.

I’m just happy that the girls don’t hang their heads or get mad when they make mistakes. At the beginning of the season, they would get mad at themselves and it would affect them for a while.

That’s not happening anymore, which is good to see.”

Sarah Gibson led North offensively with three goals, but also contributed on the other end of the pool with four steals of her own.

Senior Monica Guyett patrolled the middle of the North Stars’ attack and scored a goal of her own, as well.

Engel said he thought his girls

Claire Rich made five saves in goal for the North Stars, who won’t be back in action until April 5 – an away game against Barrington – while the Saints head to Vernon Hills on Wednesday.

Marklund’s 20th annual Top Hat Ball broke all attendance and fundraising records, raising more than $600,000 in net proceeds, states a news release from the organization.

“We are so grateful to the many generous sponsors and the more than 650 attendees who participated in making this the best Top Hat Ball in Marklund history,” said Jeannine Zupo, Marklund’s director of special events, in the release.

Marklund, founded in 1954, is a nonprofit organization that provides residential, therapeutic and educational services to children and adults with severe developmental disabilities. Based in Geneva and Bloomingdale, it serves families from throughout Chicago and the suburbs.

Held last month at the Marriott Chicago Downtown Magnificent Mile, this year’s Top Hat Ball event was intended from the start to be particularly memorable, as it featured a “spectacular” Knight in Camelot theme, the release stated.

“And what a night it was! Dueling jousters, ladies in waiting and knights in shining armor mingled among the guests, while a live owl and hawk, wandering monk, sword-in-the-stone ice sculpture and an impressive castle and topiary garden all added to the ambiance,” the release states. “As a fitting start to the evening program, Bud and Binna Porter of St. Charles, event co-chairs, were knighted for their generosity and leadership to the event.”

Silent and live auctions featuring vacations to Europe, Atlantis, the Caribbean and Cancun; sporting event packages; and even tickets to the MTV Video Music Awards contributed to the fundraising success. Generous on-the-spot donations made during the event’s “Fund-in-Need” portion of the event – where guests make donations from $20,000 to $100 – also

pushed the totals above past records, according to the release.

The evening also celebrated longtime Marklund supporter Karen Golden, who was named 2016 Friend of the Year. An active volunteer for Marklund since 1992, Golden, a resident of Naperville, joined the Marklund Board of Directors in 2000, serving as board chair from 2003-10. She has helped cultivate numerous new donors to the organization. In addition, she has served on the Top Hat Ball committee since 2004 and was event chair from 201315.

“Over the past 24 years, she has made significant personal contributions to Marklund, and continues her commitment to the ongoing work of the organization,” states the release.

“When you see the work that they do at Marklund, it compels you to act, to support and to help our kids,” Golden said in accepting her award. “I have gotten more out of Marklund than I could ever possibly give back.”

As a major fundraiser for Marklund, the Top Hat Ball has come a long way from its inaugural year when a few hundred guests “Danced Among the Dolphins” at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, raising approximately $80,000, states the release. Since then, the event has continued to grow, while keeping its goal of raising funds to support the care of those served at Marklund.

United Airlines and Viking Travel Services held major sponsorship roles, serving as the official airline and travel sponsors for the event. Among the other major sponsors were Carol and Mike Donahue of Geneva, Porter Pipe & Supply Co. of Addison, Fitch Healthcare of Wheaton, and Zimmerman Ford of St. Charles.

Waubonsee Community College associate professor of history Amy Powers has been appointed to the American Association of Community Colleges Faculty Council. Her term runs until June 30, 2018. The AACC is the primary advocacy organization for the nation’s 1,200 community colleges, states a news release. As a member of the AACC Faculty Council, Powers will lend insights and leadership to the association staff’s decision-making process for representing the interests of all of its member institutions.

Powers’ first meeting with the council will take place April 8 in Chicago. She has taught classes at Waubonsee since 2003. She obtained a Ph.D. in history from Northern Illinois University in 2007 and has earned a master’s degree in history from John Carroll University and a bachelor’s degree in history from Grove City College.

LOCAL BRIEFS Geneva Park District to hold Earth Day Celebration on April 23

GENEVA – The Geneva Park District will have a free Earth Day celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 23 at Peck Farm Park, 4038 Kaneville Road, Geneva.

Participants can celebrate Earth Day with the Natural Resources Committee of Geneva and the park district. This free family-friendly event will feature a green market with local merchants, rain barrels and compost bins for sale, a bicycle tune-up shop, free paper shredding, electronicchair massages, health screenings, games for children and more.

Weather affects arthritis symptoms Dear Dr. K: I swear my arthritis pain gets worse on cold, wet days. My husband is skeptical. Is it possible the weather could affect my symptoms?

Dear Reader: I hear from my patients all the time the weather affects their arthritis symptoms. But is it true? If so, how does that work? And is there any scientific evidence to explain it?

I spoke to my colleague Dr. Robert Shmerling. He is clinical chief of rheumatology at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He noted people have been asking these questions for many years without finding good answers. Here’s what we do know.

There are many potential weather factors that could affect arthritis symptoms, including humidity, temperature, precipitation and barometric pressure. Studies have examined the effects of these weather factors, but the results have been inconclusive.

In some cases, they were contradictory.

Two recent studies have shed more light on this question. Both found the weather does indeed have an impact on arthritis symptoms.

In the first study, Dutch researchers enrolled 222 people with osteoarthritis of the hip. They compared their reported symptoms with a variety of weather variables.

They found over a two-year period, pain and stiffness were slightly worse when barometric (air) pressure and humidity were higher.

The second study included more than 800 adults with osteoarthritis of the hip, knee or hands. In this study, changes in weather did not affect symptoms, but higher humidity was linked with increasing pain and stiffness. This was especially true in colder weather.

Now what? In other words, how is it helpful to know if specific characteristics of the

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff weather have a clear impact on arthritis pain and stiffness? After all, it’s not as if all patients can pick up and move to a more arthritis-friendly climate.

Information is useful even if it doesn’t immediately lead to a new treatment or prevention strategy. For example, identifying a link between a particular type of weather and joint symptoms might help us understand the causes and mechanisms of arthritis symptoms. And that might lead to better treatments or strategies.

It also might help to understand why some people feel worse in certain circumstances while others notice no change (or even feel better) in those same environments.

Those results could help us understand subtle differences between types of arthritis or the ways individuals respond to them.

Your question also reminds me of something I’ve said before in response to other questions. When studies show something is true for the average patient, it does not necessarily mean it’s true for every patient.

Their bodies might be different in some way we do not yet understand.

Even if the studies I mentioned did not find the weather affected the arthritis pain of the average patient, I’d believe a person – like you – who swears the weather affects her arthritis pain. No one can know your pain like you can, and no doctor should dismiss it.

Dr. Wallace: I’m responding to the 16-year-old girl who wanted to take diet pills because she felt she was overweight at 5 feet 6 inches tall and 118 pounds.

I’m also 5 feet 6 inches tall, but I weigh 128 pounds, and I just turned 17. Unlike this girl who wants to take diet pills, I am very happy just the way I am, and I look very nice in my clothes. I think the trend to be super-thin is causing a lot of girls to become anorexic and unhealthy.

My advice to the girl who wrote is – Don’t ever consider diet pills. A good diet, exercise and a positive outlook do wonders for a healthy body and

with an obstetrician, and he confirmed the father’s state of intoxication at conception would

not affect the health of the fetus.

A woman who uses alcohol, drugs or tobacco during pregnancy can put her unborn child at risk of premature delivery, low birth weight and even miscarriage. Since you are committed to your child’s well-being, I know this is behavior you will avoid.

Dr. Wallace: I know pimples shouldn’t be squeezed because this can cause infection and even scarring. How about blackheads?

Since the skin would not be broken when the blackhead is removed, is it safe to remove them?

I have several large blackheads on my forehead and around my nose. This causes me to cover them up with makeup and I’m sure that’s not the best thing to do. – Nameless, Michi-

gan City, Indiana Nameless: According to the

late Dr. Alan Shalita, who was chairman of the dermatology department at the State University of New York Health Science Center, carefully removing blackheads can make the skin look better without damage.

However, he warned when the removal is performed improperly, squeezing can cause a rupture below the skin surface, leading to inflammation.

To be perfectly safe, Dr. Shalita suggested extraction should be performed only under the supervision of a dermatologist.
