New auto repair shop brightens Batavia

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – A new automobile repair business is brightening up an old commercial strip on North Route 25 in Batavia.

Karl’s Complete Auto Repair, 1109 N. Washington Ave., opened this year, sprucing up the building formerly occupied by D&S Auto Repair and Sales.

Owner and master mechanic Karl Schutzenhofer of Elburn has a pretty simple philosophy for his business.

“I want to provide people with honest and reliable auto repair,” Schutzenhofer said, “and to be able to tell them if there’s a safety problem.”

With five vehicle bays, the shop has plenty of room for Schutzenhofer to ply his craft. Schutzenhofer has much experience as a mechanic, and training in electronic engineering at DeVry University. After cleaning up a space he described as dingy and dirty, and painting the building in a bright color scheme, Schutzenhofer obviously is proud of his shiny new business.

“I just want to make it a place that’s friendly to everyone,” Schutzenhofer said.

“My dad always had a scary fast car,” the younger Schutzenhofer said.

He seems aware that many people can find themselves in a tough financial situation when faced with car repairs.

“If there’s a financial restriction, we

will get you running,” he said.

Library Fair kicks off National Library Week During the month of April, our nation celebrates humor, poetry, pecans and welding.

During the second week, April 10 to 16, we celebrate National Library Week to recognize the importance of libraries – school, private, special and public.

This year, the Batavia Public Library – along with libraries throughout the country – celebrates how “Libraries Transform” and invites the community to a Library Fair from 1 to 4 p.m. April 10.

Batavia, this is your library. Come in. Ask questions. Get answers. Find out how to use the many services the library has to offer and meet the professionals who enthusiastically serve you.

Employees from all of the library departments will be on hand, as well as members of the library board, Friends group and foundation board.

There will be trivia questions, displays, demonstrations and a video blast from the past (think Books Across Batavia 2002).

Do you have a treasured book that’s falling apart? The library’s Technical Services department will show you how to cure a number of book ailments.

Find out which department has the most employees and learn what makes Youth Services the fun place to visit.

If you can’t make it to the Library Fair, stop in during the week. On Monday of that week, Adult Services will help you find and print tax forms for free (some restrictions apply). Tuesday will be Youth Services Day – there will be a drop-in craft and scavenger hunt on the lower level from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

You can meet the library director and take a behind-the-scenes tour on that Wednesday (from 10 to 11 a.m., 2 to 3 p.m. or 7 to 8 p.m.). On that Thursday, we’ll celebrate Circulation Services, the hub of the library. And stop by the conference room for free

refreshments from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. that Friday.

Springtime on the Farm highlights season

editorial@kcchronicle.com Spring just seems to, well, spring forth more joyfully on a farm than most other places, and nowhere is that more evident than at Primrose Farm, 5N726 Crane Road, St. Charles.

Stop by from noon to 4 p.m. April 2 for a Springtime on the Farm afternoon of events, demonstrations and old-fashioned fun, as farm staffers prepare to usher in this season of growth and renewal.

Like farmers everywhere, the staff at Primrose Farm has an ever-growing roster of tasks to accomplish to get the farm’s livestock and grounds ready for the year ahead. Now that winter winds have abated somewhat and temperatures are on the rise, animals are actively looking forward to getting out of the barn and into the pasture. Seeds are standing ready to be sown into freshly furrowed fields, and household chores (think spring cleaning!) need their seasonal update.

the Farm event can hope to visit with the farm’s newest calf and get firsthand experience in various parts of the milking process, from separating cream to churning butter.

And, of course, farmers are think-

ing about the foods they will produce for a variety of farm needs.

Springtime on the Farm participants can help plant early-season crops, such as potatoes and pumpkins, and lend a hand in shelling corn from last fall’s harvest that is used to feed farm animals.

“It’s a great way to get to know the full workings of the farm,” Johns said.

“People can get real behind-the-scenes insights and have fun trying their hand at various tasks.”

While the Springtime on the Farm events and demonstrations go on all afternoon, visitors also can take a break and pop over to that day’s dropin program from 2 to 3 p.m. Regularly scheduled on the first and third Saturday each month, the “Hold Your Horses” program gives horse lovers a chance to mingle with the farm’s resident Belgian draft horses. Get up close and personal with these gentle giants and explore basic grooming techniques and learn about equine care practices.

The Springtime on the Farm event is free, and there is a $5 resident fee and $7.50 nonresident fee for the “Hold Your Horses” drop-in program. Interested visitors are requested to register in advance.

Geneva man charged in garage burglary

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – A Geneva man is being held in the Kane County jail on $500,000 bail on multiple felony charges relating to a late-night garage burglary.

The alleged incident took place March 18, and it resulted in the homeowner being stabbed with a utility knife, according to police reports.

Ronald D. Anderson, 42, of the 300 block of Brittany Court, Geneva, was charged with resi- Ronald dential burglary, armed D. Anderson violence, aggravated battery with great bodily harm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and aggravated battery with a mask,as well as one misdemeanor count of aggravated assault, according to police reports.

The homeowner, a 31-year-old man, heard a noise in his garage, according to police.

When he opened the garage, he saw

Anderson and got into a fight with him, according to police. The man was stabbed with two deep lacerations and was bitten by Anderson’s dog, according to police reports.

The homeowner told police he saw a man wearing khaki pants, a black jacket and black neck warmer pulled up over his nose.

He said the man was holding a bag of the homeowner’s tools, according to police reports.

The dog and Anderson ran off, and they were found by police during a search of the area, according to reports. Police Cmdr. Julie Nash said she could not say what type of dog Anderson had with him, but it was picked up by police and returned to the family.

The homeowner was treated at Delnor Hospital in Geneva for his injuries, according to police reports.

Anderson was found with minor cuts and abrasions from his scuffle with the homeowner but did not require medical attention, according to reports.

Anderson is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – Parents of middle and high school students in Batavia School District 101 will look forward to a $25 reduction in the registration fee next fall.

The Batavia School Board on Tuesday voted 5-2 to cut the fee for those students, because of savings being realized in the district’s Chromebook program.

For students at Rotolo Middle School, the new registration fee will be $140 each. For a Batavia High School student, the fee will be $168.50.

Two years ago, the district increased the registration fee for middle and high school students by $75, to help defray the

cost of new Chromebook computer devices for each student. After the district encountered problems with the devices, the vendor replaced them with upgraded machines, meaning that the existing models now being used by students are expected to last at least another year, school administration officials said.

However, the district continues to incur considerable costs in connection with the devices, chief financial officer Tony Inglese said, including software, subscriptions, Internet connections and filtering, as well as insuring and maintaining the machines.

“We’re not trying to recoup all of the costs,” Inglese said, adding later that the fee likely will have to be increased again

when the district needs to buy new devices for students.

Board members John Dryden and Jon Gaspar, who voted against the proposal, said the administration should be more specific about what school registration fees are designed to cover.

“Itemize the fees and let people know what they are paying for,” Dryden said.

“It can be done.”

Voting in favor of the fee change were board President Cathy Dremel and board members Jason Stoops, Chris Lowe, Tina Bleakley and Sue Locke.

The board’s action does not affect the registration fee for elementary school students, which will remain at $135 each, Inglese said.

North Aurora aims for a fireworks show in 2017

Steve Bosco, the village’s finance director, expects the budget for the show to cost around $15,000 to $30,000.

The contract for the fireworks will be voted on around the end of 2016 and could be finalized after that. The final cost will not be a part of fiscal year 2017.

According to Bosco, most shows book a contract for fireworks a year to nine months beforehand. Discussions regarding the event are not expected to continue until after Independence Day this year.

North Aurora Committee of the Whole members have been discussing the possibility of hosting North Aurora’s own Fourth of July fireworks show for the first time since 2009. It would discontinue the recent partnership the village has had with Aurora.

For several years, the village has been in a partnership with Aurora for Independence Day fireworks. The yearly show is at RiverEdge Park and features food and live music. North Aurora residents can attend the event by taking a shuttle bus offered by the village.

According to North Aurora Trustee Mark Guethle, the village’s show started to get expensive, and it was discontinued.

It ended up costing about $20,000 for the village’s final show in 2009. The fireworks co-op promptly began in 2010.

Committee members now want to

create a feeling of community for residents, apart from the city of Aurora.

Hosting a local fireworks show is one of the ways that will help establish the brand of North Aurora, Guethle said.

During the March 7 committee meeting, members discussed ideas for the event after residents’ recent interest in hosting the event, Village President Dale Berman said.

According to Berman, the finalizations of the event plan and budget will occur later this year. The show is expected to occur July 3, 2017, in order to not conflict with other cities’ fireworks shows.

“From our last Committee of the Whole meeting, we had made the feeling known from the board that we were going to continue this year with what we have done in the past, and work towards what we might want to do in the future,” Berman said.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Geneva aldermen unanimously recommended that staff see whether the city can get a 1 percent citywide sales tax increase question on the Nov. 8 ballot.

The 10-0 vote came this week after an hours-long discussion about the city’s budget issues, including cost cutting and finding more revenue.

The referendum would take a previous recommendation for an additional restaurant tax out of the budget as a revenue source, officials said.

“I will vote affirmatively for that,” 1st Ward Alderman Mike Bruno said

of putting it on the ballot. “If this is what we have to do to vet the question for its reasonableness, I will vote affirmatively for it.”

Fourth Ward Alderman Jim Radecki said he wanted a proposed 2 percent restaurant tax held off until the 1 percent citywide sales tax issue is settled.

“With the caveat that, as a group, we agree that if it cannot be placed on the November ballot, or that it fails, we will revisit the downtown sales tax and other alternate streams of income,” Radecki said.

The Geneva City Council will take final action on the committee’s recommendation.

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Aldermen dug in for more than two hours this week in a prolonged disagreement over budget and policy at a Committee of the Whole meeting Wednesday, which had been continued from the previous week.

Fifth Ward Alderman Tom Simonian pushed to eliminate funding for the assistant city administrator position and to maintain the city’s health and dental benefits cost at the 2015-16 levels for fiscal 2016-17. The Geneva City Council will take final action.

Aldermen voted, 7-3, in support of making the recommendations after a wide-ranging discussion over fundamental budget and policy issues. First Ward Aldermen Tara Burghart and Mike Bruno, as well as 5th Ward Alderman Craig Maladra, voted no.

With regard to not having an assistant city administrator, Bruno said it would be setting Stephanie Dawkins up for failure. Dawkins is the current assistant city administrator. She will step up to the city administrator position in June, when Mary McKittrick retires.

Burghart recounted several honors, awards and recognitions Geneva has received, saying it was the city’s employees whose work ethic is a big part of those accolades.

The aldermen’s wide-ranging discussion also covered insurance, equipment needs and overtime costs, and ultimately considering whether they should meet on Wednesday nights for continuing budget discussions.

Living the life of a ‘real’ college student

One of the perks – and downsides – of going to a community college is that I miss out on being completely independent and living on my own without my parents and siblings. As much as I would like to dream about living on my own, I still have about a year and a half to go before I adjust my lifestyle pattern.

I may cringe over the idea of moving away from my family now, but hopefully, I will soon be ready to move away from the home that I have been in for more than 15 years.

When it comes down to it, I cannot recall a time where my two older brothers and I have been left at home peacefully for multiple days without one parent present.

My mom was – and still is – a stayat-home mom, so she is always home, and my dad works from home most of the time. Nevertheless, while it may be a routine for some kids to come home from work or school without a parent being home, that is not the case for me.

Therefore, when my parents decided to go on a week-long trip to Florida in early March, my brothers and I were more than ready to finally have freedom and the ability to show off our adulthood without any parental supervision that we have so long hoped for.

However, my initial one minute of excitement wore off once my mom reminded me that I had to do all the dirty work that my brothers and I never really have to do due to my mom always being in the house.

Yes, I had to frequently use the washer and dryer (which are actually really easy); I had to load the dishwasher every other night, wipe down the kitchen countertops and table, get the paper every day and

What a thrill this all was, living as the independent adult that I am.

I basically turned into my mom the entire week while my brothers did nothing but take out the trash (thanks, guys).

However, by the end of the week, I was a pro at folding laundry and microwaving frozen foods and cooking SpaghettiOs. I felt proud of myself for taking up the lifestyle of a “real” college student, like someone who is currently going to a big university and living in a tiny box for a dorm room.

I had some basic training time to live away from my parents, while my other college friends were kind of just shoved into the world of cooking ramen noodles and washing their own clothes months ago.

While I appreciate everything that my parents do for me on a daily basis, it is nice to see that I was able to spend an entire week on my own without having the house collapse or starting a kitchen fire. I think I have succeeded in my training for the real world outside my little hometown.

‘FROM PAGE TO STAGE’ Amber Mak excited about the possibilities at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora

ccasey@shawmedia.com AURORA – Amber Mak always has had a passion for something new.

Whether it was figure skating competitively until the age of 15, getting the opportunity to work on the creative side of the Broadway production of “Chicago,” or even – more recently – being named the new works development Amber director at the Paramount Mak Theatre in Aurora, Mak has been drawn to that which opens up possibilities.

Originally from Kansas, Mak attended Northwestern University, majoring in communication studies and dance, and she worked at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater.

After spending time working on Broadway in New York, there was something about working in Chicago that was appealing.

Mak created her own company – called the FWD Theatre Project – with an initial goal to get new musicals and introduce them for one-night-only concerts in fun settings, such as wineries or concert halls.

She had also worked with Paramount Theatre as an actress, and she directed and choreographed its recent production of “Hairspray.” Between the Paramount’s familiarity with Mak’s work and her efforts with the FWD Theatre Project, she was offered the position of new works development director at the venue.

Mak caught up with Kane County Chronicle reporter Chris Casey to talk about her journey and her excitement for the future.

Why figure skating and what sparked the transition into theater?

Amber Mak: It’s certainly a different sport from what you’re used to growing up doing. I was always told I had this natural ability to skate. I wasn’t scared to fall. I was that kid that was up at 4 a.m. and skating by 4:30 a.m., went to school and got out early to be back at the rink for a couple more hours. It was really my entire life until I was 16. My brother was always the one involved

in theater, so I always went to theaters and skated to overtures of theater. I decided I wanted to be a normal teenager and be a cheerleader and join the theater program. I would have had to move away from family in Kansas to continue figure skating, so I gave it up. It was a hard decision and a huge part of my life, but my time with theater certainly helped fill that void.

Casey: Did you take anything away from figure skating that you may be able to apply to working in theater?

Mak: Absolutely. When I lived in New York, that was my side job. I taught figure skating, choreographed skating routines at Bryant Park in New York.

If I take anything away from figure skating for that long, it was definitely how it taught me how to fall down and get back up again, literally and figuratively.

Casey: Your excitement for this new works development director position is evident. What’s the most exciting part for you?

Mak: My excitement really lies in the abilities of the Paramount Theatre. It was a gigantic yes from me when offered the position because the possibilities are endless here. We have an incredible staff and technical crew – they are such great people. It’s really exciting trying to find an idea and see it bloom. It’s something that excites me to see an idea in its infancy to a full production on the Paramount stage. As we say in the business, “From page to stage.” It’s thrilling for all of us, and we are extremely hopeful that we’re able to take [the] community along on the journey. Not everyone gets to see a musical grow, so we hope that we get to share with it with the Aurora community and Chicagoland area.

You know your starter at a restaurant looks good when it attracts the eyes and interrupts the conversations of other diners on its way to your table.

That was the case when a coworker and I stopped into The Finery & Blacksmith Bar in downtown St. Charles for dinner on a recent weekday.

I was jazzed to check out the restaurant, having read much about it in this newspaper.

As former Kane County Chronicle features editor and current Kane County Magazine editor Kara Silva wrote in October 2015, a few months after the restaurant opened: “David and Juliette Reyes of West Chicago opened The Finery, sharing the culinary stage as owners and working the kitchen in tandem. Classically trained in French cooking, the duo has created a contemporary, American menu that focuses on seasonality, finesse with flavors and locally-sourced ingredients.”

After reading such descriptions about the restaurant, I was intrigued, to say the least.

So, back to that starter.

My coworker and I ordered the Cheese and Charcuterie board, which – on this day – came with blue cheese from Point Reyes, California; handdipped ricotta with local honey; an Anabasque sheep milk cheese from Wisconsin; house-made lamb terrine; prosciutto di Parma aged 600 days; South Cider Goose Salumi; and other items on which to nibble ($19).

On its way to our table, the board drew the attention of other diners, which made for a fun moment.

The starter was a great way to lead into dinner after a long day at work.

“The Cheese and Charcuterie options were a great mix of creamy and hard cheeses, and the house-made lamb terrine was lovely,” commented my coworker.

To further enhance the meal, my coworker and I each ordered a glass of wine.

I ordered the 2014 Vinum Cellars pinto noir ($9), while my coworker ordered the happy hour “red pour,” which cost $5.

Choosing an entree was an enjoyable experience at The Finery, as the menu offers many tempting options.

Among our server’s recommendations was the Country Pheasant with

black truffle, risotto, confit purse and pesto ($26), which is what I selected.

Meanwhile, my coworker placed an order for the Pressed Pork Belly with roasted acorn squash puree, maitake mushrooms, green harissa and a stout braise reduction ($19).

The Country Pheasant was a wonderfully delicious dish – the meat was so tender, the risotto cooked just right, all blending together well with the other ingredients. And the presentation was pleasing to the eye.

My coworker said the Pressed Pork Belly was perfectly cooked, “with a crispy skin and just enough fat-to-meat ratio to make it taste really rich and decadent. She added that the acorn squash puree was “absolutely delicious.”

We capped off our meal with coffee. And we also ordered a brownie that included vanilla gelato, as well as orange and raspberry flavors ($7).

From the friendly and informative greeting we received from The Finery’s host, to the excellent service provided by our server, our visit to the restaurant was an exceptional one.

A future visit might include another order of wine from The Finery’s extensive wine list, or one of its hand-crafted cocktails or brews. And – with its seasonal menu – the restaurant will surely have more fantastic food to try in the future.

Art of detecting can be difference between success, failure Sometimes, even the wine detectives do a bad job detecting.

Last year, in Detroit, we paid for a license to sell wine in Michigan and appointed a small distributor that appeared interested in selling Cardinal Rule to restaurants and wine shops.

But – after the introductory sales meeting with the distributor staff, tasting the wines and making key presentations – nothing much happened.

So, we re-doubled our efforts assisting the distributor that was working to sell the wines in Detroit, Lansing and Grand Rapids, thinking that most of the potential would be in the larger

THE WINE DETECTIVES Tom Minnerick markets. And we did have limited success making placements (usually six or 12 bottles at a time). But we gained important visibility.

However, after we left and returned to Chicago, sales activity slowed and eventually collapsed. So, now we really had to become super sleuths to discover what the real problem was.

We called a couple of the distributor sales people to offer additional help, and – through some clever questioning – discovered the distributor had switched emphasis to selling craft beer instead of wine.

We have recently selected a new distributor that, after exhaustive scrutiny, we discovered sells only premium wines. In Michigan, since a wine brand can only be represented by one distributor, you have to transfer inventory to the new distributor. We also have to pay the old distributor a dollar amount equal to the profit they “earned” on your brand the previous

year in order to persuade them to “release” it. I know this sounds stupid, but every state has unique laws governing the distribution of wine and spirits.

Sometimes, you have to be a better wine detective when selecting a partner to do business with!

ccasey@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – It was an unusual feeling for the St. Charles North girls soccer team as it began its spring training.

Brian Harks became only the program’s second-ever head coach as Ruth Vostal retired after 15 seasons in charge of the North Stars.

But a new face, one that is quite recognizable with Harks touting a lengthy beard, does not mean that the expectations change for a program that has won 13 straight regional titles.

Brian “The girls know the expectations are high in this program, and Harks they place those high expectations on themselves,” Harks said. “That’s part of what makes this group special. It’s fun as a coach to have that motivation, be intrinsic and have them be their own biggest critic and motivator. When it comes naturally, you know the girls understand what it means to play here.”

It’s convenient for Harks to have assisted under Vostal over the last seven seasons and to remain in touch today. To have someone that can relate to the program’s successful arc was a reassuring feeling to the team, especially the seniors.

Harks added boys head coach Eric Willson as an assistant, as well as standout and 2012 graduate Lisa Manski to the junior varsity staff.

Megan McEachern returns as a threat up top, while goalkeeper Jenny Scara will be relied upon to make some big saves, especially during UEC River play. If Batavia’s defense holds up, coach Mark Gianfrancesco has to like his team’s chances to compete in the River Division.

It will be a feeling-out process for coach Megan Owens and the Vikings this season. A strong start (Saturday’s 9-0 victory over Rosary) got Geneva’s confidence high to begin the spring, but the Vikings seem to always measure their season by matchups with Tri-Cities rivals Batavia, East and St. Charles North. Geneva will need to beat one of those three to get to where it wants to be this year. Defender Briar Schwardt and freshman forward Jenna Dominguez are two to keep an eye on.

KANELAND Last season: 19-4-0 overall, 6-2 Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference East Division. Lost to Peoria Notre Dame, 4-1, in Class 2A DeKalb Supersectional.

It will be hard for Kaneland to not have high expectations after its 2015 postseason run. A trip to the supersectionals, one win away from state, gave the likes of seniors Kiandra Powell and Gabby Cano, among others, some valuable experience heading into their final season with the Knights. Kaneland’s defense looks extremely strong to start the year, but a tough conference schedule will test the Knights’ back line.

Morgan Rerko, St. Charles North, sr., MF Rerko was a unanimous selection as captain among her teammates and is expected to be one of the North Stars’ leaders. Her strength on the ball is reminiscent of former North Stars Hanna Durocher and Lizzie Parilli, both of whom had very successful senior seasons.

Gabby Cano, Kaneland, sr., D Cano, a Kane County Chronicle First Team All-Area selection last season, returns as the anchor of the Knights’ defense. Entering Wednesday, Kaneland had yet to allow a goal in three matches played this season. Cano and her fellow defenders will play a big part in Kaneland’s success.

Allison Chesterfield, St. Charles East, sr., GK Chesterfield, or “Gator” as she is known to coach Paul Jennison, is an established presence in the net. Many of the Saints’ successful seasons in past years have featured very low goals-against figures. Chesterfield allowed just 11 goals in 18 games played last season, posting a 0.61 goals-against average.

Megan McEachern, Batavia, sr., F McEachern remains a big threat at the top of Batavia’s attack. Though the Bulldogs have a number of newcomers that McEachern will have to familiarize herself with, coach Mark Gianfrancesco can expect her to be the team’s leading threat this season.

Briar Schwardt, Geneva, sr., D Schwardt returns as one of the more experienced players on a Geneva team that has 10 underclassmen on its roster this season. The Vikings have had players able to put the ball in the back of the net in the early going, but Geneva’s defense, led by Schwardt, will be crucial to its success through the Upstate Eight Conference River Division season.

Kiandra Powell, Kaneland, sr., F Powell wasted no time starting her senior season off with a bang. On Saturday, she tallied a hat trick against Hampshire, bringing her goal total to five in the team’s first three games. Her ability to strike the ball is second to none and coach Scott Parillo can expect opposing teams to try and shut Powell down in order to beat the Knights.

Hannah Kolb, St. Charles East, jr., F Kolb returns as one of the Saints’ leaders. Despite being slightly overshadowed by some of the standout seniors of East’s 2015 team, Kolb will play a big role in the Saints’ attack this season.

Gia Wahlberg, St. Charles North, so., F Wahlberg burst onto the scene as a freshman, earning a spot on the Kane County Chronicle’s All-area first team last season. She scored 18 goals and added 13 assists for a North Stars team that played for a sectional championship.

Chantel Carranza, St. Charles East, so., F/MF Carranza was another underclassman that surprised folks with her 2015 play. Most of her contributions came from her speed and skill on the ball, but the sophomore will most likely be asked to play an even bigger role in putting the ball in the net this season.

Jordan King, Burlington Central, so., F King already has scored seven goals through the Rockets’ first three games. She made a big impact for Burlington Central last season.

However, one game into the Vikings’ 2016 campaign, Kate Geary is already blazing her own trail.

Her stellar defensive play helped the Vikings top Kaneland, 11-9, in a cold, wet and windy six-inning slugfest Wednesday that was shortened due to darkness.

Geary made a running catch on a deep, bases-loaded drive to center field by Kaneland’s Mary Clausen with two outs in the top of the fifth inning to keep the game tied at nine. On a ball over her head, Geary was able to turn and haul the ball in, ending the inning. Kaneland had already scored four runs in the inning and would have likely scored three more without Geary’s heroics.

“I was able to get a good read on it,” Geary said.

“It was an excellent feeling to make the catch. … I knew they were good hitters.”

Geneva coach Greg Dierks couldn’t speak highly enough of Geary’s catch.

“That’s the defensive play of the game,” he said “They already had four runs in. That would have made it seven. That wound up being the difference for us.”

Geary, a sophomore, took over ownership of the No. 7 Geneva jersey after her sister graduated and headed to Miami (Ohio) to play softball. Offensively, Kate Geary added a double, single, two runs scored and reached base once via error.

“It was great to win our first game of the year,” Geary said.

Geneva pitcher Emily Plocinski retired the Knights (1-2) in order, on three groundouts, to secure the Vikings victory. It was the only 1-2-3 inning of the game.

STC East product stays busy as Augustana senior ON CAMPUS James Nokes Annie Martines was caught offguard as she prepared for the outdoor portion of her final collegiate track and field season.

Even though she’s had a decorated career on and off the track, the St. Charles East alumnus and Augustana senior hurdler/sprinter was shocked when she found out she’d received the Jack Swartz Award from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin for the 2015-16 winter sports season.

“I was surprised and excited when I heard I’d received the award,” said Martines of an award which can be given to student athletes that earn a varsity letter and have a grade-point average of 3.50 or better. Swartz was the commissioner of the CCIW until he died in 1998.

“There are a lot of standout athletes in the winter,” Martines added. “I for sure thought a basketball player or wrestler would receive the award.”

As an eight-time CCIW indoor and outdoor placewinner, Martines had all the athletic credentials.

She’s also a two-time team captain that was voted Most Valuable Performer her junior season by teammates. Her best finish was also the second-best time in Augustana history for the 400-meter hurdles. It was during the outdoor portion of last season when she posted a time of 1:01.48 in the Augustana Midwest Twilight Qualifier in May. Last season, Martines’ teammates also voted her as recipient of the Erica Vortman Spirit Award.

She has carried a 3.66 GPA and is a communication sciences and disorders major. Augustana sports information director Dave Wrath nominated Martines for the Swartz Award.

For the past three years, Wrath has got to know Martines well because she has worked in the athletics department as a student-athlete recruiting coordinator.

“When I looked at the list, Annie just jumped out,” Wrath said. “Over her career, she’s done exactly what the award embodies.

“Annie is the poster child for what we want from our student athletes at Augustana. She is engaged in activities on campus. She works in the athletics office as a recruiter

She plans to enroll at Louisiana State next school year to pursue an advanced degree in speech language pathology. “I always wanted to go the medical route,” Martines said, “because it is so fast-moving and you are always on your feet.” and is tough as nails when it comes to being a competitor.”

While she has a goal to go under a minute in the 400 hurdles, Martines was close last year and would ultimately like to qualify as an All American in her senior season. As she looked back on the move from running track for the Saints, fear of the extra 100 meters in the collegiate event stood out.

“At first I thought there was no way I could make the transition from 300 to 400 meters in the hurdles,” Martines said. “In high school I was dying at 300 meters.

But, the extra distance really helped me. I’ve got a kick at the end. I think about being comfortable and strong at the end because I know it’s painful in those last 100 meters for everyone.”

With Augustana set to open the outdoor season when it hosts the 75th annual Vikings Olympics on April 1 and 2, Martines can’t wait to get to the bigger track.

“The indoor season is a chance to get the rust off and build up strength and endurance,” said Martines, who added she prefers the longer, more challenging distances featured in outdoor competition.

“The 400-meter hurdles is my favorite event and indoors it’s only a 60-meter event.”

Next school year, Martines plans to enroll at Louisiana State, where she will continue her educational career and seek an advanced degree in speech language pathology. She wants to make a career of working with patients who redevelop their speech as they recover from a stroke.

“In clinical work, something just clicked when I worked with older patients,” said Martines, who added much of her class will head into a career working with young children as they develop their speech.

“I always wanted to go the medical route because it’s so fast-moving and you are always on your feet.”

Martines already is a special events intern for the Quad City Chamber of Commerce, an Augustana clinical intern for the Center for Speech, Language and Hearing, holds a place on the executive board of the Office of Student Life and is a peer leadership mentor.

Mix in track and field and a job in the athletics department and it’s been a fast-moving career for Martines.

Kaneland girls soccer remains perfect KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE

MAPLE PARK – Lousy weather against a budding rival wasn’t enough to slow down the Kaneland soccer team on Wednesday, as the Knights beat Rosary, 4-0, to roll to their fourth straight win to open the season.

The Knights (4-0) opened the scoring with a goal from Holly Collingbourne, assisted by Kiandra Powell in the 13th minute.

Collingbourne added an assist on the Knights’ third goal, finding Lauren Ortiz in the 66th minute. Two minutes later, Taylor Zitkus came up with her second assist of the game, hitting Paige Guyton with a pass for the game’s final goal.

“We started out a little slow because of the weather and some other factors,” Collingbourne said. “But we [started] doing good in catching passing and finishing our goals. So the end result was good.”

In the 54th minute, Zitkus played the ball ahead to Powell, who had surged past the defense for Kaneland’s second goal.

28 Diabetes treatment protocol changes Dear Dr. K: In a recent column you said doctors are not trying to lower blood sugar as much as they used to in people with diabetes.

My husband’s doctor always tells him “lower is better” when it comes to his blood sugar.

Can you explain?

Dear Reader: When I was in medical school, and for many years thereafter, “lower is better” was what doctors believed. We knew people with diabetes could develop severe, even fatal, complications if their blood sugar got very high. Plus, we had powerful blood-sugar-lowering treatments available.

On the other hand, there was a limit to “lower is better.” Too much of a good thing could be a bad thing: Overtreatment could push blood sugars too low – dangerously low.

Sustained very low blood sugar can produce confusion, coma and death. So we measured blood sugars frequently, with the goal of having blood sugar as low as it could go without causing bothersome symptoms.

That was the goal because studies many years ago had shown such “intensive treatment” reduced some types of complications of diabetes. Doctors speak of two types of complications of diabetes, both involving blood vessels. The first is disease of small blood vessels (called microvascular complications), which affects the eyes, kidneys and nerves. The second is disease of the large blood vessels (called macrovascular complications), which causes heart disease, strokes and peripheral artery disease.

An analysis of randomized trials involving almost 35,000 people with diabetes found intensive treatment had a benefit: It led to a more than 10 percent reduction in small blood vessel complications.

Most doctors assumed if intensive treatment lowered small blood vessel complications, it also would lower large blood vessel complications. However, over the past 40 years, the evidence has been quite mixed.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Many studies show people with higher blood sugars are more likely to have large blood vessel complications, such as heart attacks and strokes. So you might think intensive lowering of blood sugar would reduce the rates of large blood vessel complications.

But that’s not necessarily true.

The way to see if it is true is through large, randomized trials. In these studies, some people with diabetes (chosen at random) were given intensive treatment that kept their blood sugars very low. Others were treated less intensively and had higher blood sugars. These studies all have abbreviated names. The best known are VADT, ACCORD and ADVANCE. Unfortunately, these trials did not demonstrate a benefit from intensive treatment compared to less intensive treatment. And more patients in the intensive treatment group have suffered from the complications of blood sugar that is too low. Worst of all, in one of the studies (ACCORD), the rates of premature death from heart disease and from all causes were higher in the intensive treatment group. Too much of a good thing might have been fatal. One possible reason is the low blood sugar may have triggered a dangerous heart rhythm.

So, while lowering blood sugar with treatment definitely improves health, there are limits. Today, I and many other doctors do not treat blood sugar as intensively as we used to.

In other words, the notion people who have been drinking are protected from injury because they are “relaxed” is false, according to University of Michigan Medical Center researchers.

“Alcohol worsens any injury resulting from an impact – it renders the person more vulnerable,” said Patricia Waller, director of the U of M Transportation Research Institute and a research scientist in the Department of Psychiatry.

“You can have a designated driver who is completely sober and hasn’t touched a drop, but if someone else runs a traffic light and you’re in the front seat, the chance of your being injured or killed is higher than if you had never been drinking,” Waller said.

Still, the myth “drunks are safe” persists, she said. “Even

If the baby sitter doesn’t know the man, she’s wise not to take a chance. And you and your husband would do well to respect such a decision.

I do hope you rethink your decision not to use this girl again as a baby sitter. What matters is she did a good job and your children liked her.

Taking a basement to a whole new level

The Washington Post Like many families who live in older, urban homes, Andrew Selee and Alejandra Vallejo dreamed of renovating their dark, dingy basement. But it wasn’t until a flood two years ago ruined a stack of favorite books that they jumped into action.

The couple and their 8-year-old daughter, Lucia, had already been feeling short of space. They had started going to open houses near their 1916 Washington rowhouse, as they didn’t want to move far from the neighborhood they loved. At one property, they saw a beautifully finished basement that was integrated with the rest of the house.

They realized that a clever, kid-friendly redesign of their own lower level could give their house a new lease on life.

“We were looking for more space in our old house that didn’t have lots of options for expansion,” Selee said. “We needed a space to live in and enjoy, part playroom, part office, part gym and part family room so we could all be together. It seemed a tall order for a very small space. It actually didn’t seem realistic, but we were hopeful.”

The latest indoor plant trend should have deer everywhere prancing with joy: Tropical staghorn ferns have antler-like fronds that – when affixed to a vertical surface – mimic a taxidermied buck.

“A lot of people who live in apartments want to bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor,” said Tom Hammond, a garden designer and woodworker who sells mounted staghorns at Ginkgo Gardens in Washington. “There’s a gravity toward these for certain people.”

The plant is an epiphyte, meaning it grows symbiotically on a host tree.

Staghorn ferns (and other epiphytes like them, including orchids and bromeliads) don’t need soil to survive, but rather gather nutrients from the air and rainwater, which carry healthy organic matter from the plant’s surroundings to its roots.

Because they most often grow vertically, using a tree as support, staghorn ferns are well suited for mounting.

Distinct, relatively easy to care for and easy to make yourself, staghorn ferns affixed to a wooden surface are a 20-minutes-or-less DIY project that costs less than $30.

Continued from page 2 exposed pipes. It included a makeshift home office, an exercise machine, a futon, a play area filled with toys, stacks of boxes and luggage, and sagging shelves stuffed with plastic storage bins.

When the group gathered at the dining room table, Vallejo produced a wish list she and her husband had come up with for their dream basement: spa shower, double home office, dog washing sink, toy storage, minibar, fireplace, guest room capability, fitness area and space for hundreds of books.

One of Vallejo’s friends who came to the meeting was dubious when she heard the litany of requests. She quipped that Lukauskis was a designer, “not a magician.” They all had a good laugh, but Lukauskis wasn’t deterred. “I realized we would have to maximize [the space], inch by inch,” Lukauskis said. “I told them: ‘I love challenges, and I won’t say no. I will try and resolve every issue.’”

An 8-year-old friend of Lucia’s came up with another room for the list: a tiny playhouse under the stairs where kids could hang out “and hide from their moms.”

Tips from a pro on renovating your basement Here are five suggestions from designer Johana Lukauskis if you are considering a renovation of your basement.

1. Do a health inspection. Hire a professional to inspect and remediate your space, especially if you have an old house.

Basements are particularly prone to dampness and mold. Discuss any family health issues you may have. This is the time to take care of long-term problems.

2. Choose materials wisely. Build with materials that prevent mold growth. Avoid carpet and wood floors in basements.

These can encourage mold down the road, which may trigger allergies.

3. Maximize storage with built-ins.

Lukauskis installed bookshelves in the was able to add about 150 square feet to the existing 600 by incorporating and insulating a storage area under the exterior front stairs and carving out the playhouse under the interior stairs. The work also entailed replacing the HVAC system and upgrading electricity and plumbing.

But the first thing Lukauskis did was to arrange for a professional inspection for mold and asbestos. An inspector took samples all over the basement, found a bit of both and

project that were extra deep so two rows of books could fit on each shelf. Other storage cabinets were built in throughout the basement wherever there was a bit of space.

4. Use doors to define spaces. Choose your doors carefully, and if possible, use them to let light through. In this project, Lukauskis chose frosted sliding doors, pocket doors and French doors with small windows.

5. Install a heated floor. This saves energy and makes a basement feel cozy.

Each room can have its own thermostat. She used the Ditra-Heat electric floor-warming system with 12-by-24-inch porcelain tiles. removed it. Vallejo said it’s made a big difference in sinus and respiratory issues for the family.

Lukauskis created a series of small rooms and added more light. She used white paint punched up with bright accent colors and installed recessed lights. The home office has desks with lots of shelves plus a small gym; the entertainment lounge has deep library built-ins plus a fridge, microwave and a cafe table with stools; Lucia’s playroom (decorated with a cherry

blossom tree wall decal) has a futon that can serve as a guest bed; the hallway has built-in storage closets; the bathroom offers a steam shower and a custom-made vanity with a quartz top and stone vessel sink; and the laundry room has a high-efficiency washer and dryer, utility sink (Freckles the dachshund comfortably gets a bath in it), and a drying rack.

Lukauskis kept to a tight budget for furnishing the space, shopping mostly at Ikea. She used indoor/outdoor fabrics and washable slipcovers to keep it kid- and dog-friendly.

The family uses the space in many ways: hosting Super Bowl parties, enjoying the fireplace while reading, hosting out-of-town guests on the futon. “It’s so versatile,” Vallejo said.

Selee is usually there working in the morning and brewing a cappuccino before he leaves for the office. In the afternoon, Lucia and her friends descend on the playhouse, and in the evening, Vallejo might use the exercise equipment and take a relaxing steam shower.

The flood now seems like a bad dream.

“We all have our own space down there, and yet we are also there together,” Selee said.

“Our basement went from being an afterthought to the central living space of our home.”

Step 9: Hang your fern on an area of your wall where it gets plenty of light, usually near a south-facing window, and where you can easily reach it to take it down to water it. Staghorns thrive in humid environments. Run it under warm water in the shower for 10 to 20 minutes every other week, with some light misting in between to mimic tropical weather patterns. Do not detach it from the board.

The magazine looked at the sales results of all real estate agents in the metro area and then ranked them by total sales for the year, states a news release. It then compared that ranking to the one done a year earlier.

In terms of which agents saw their ranking increase the most in 2015, France had the fourth biggest gain, advancing 1,927 places.

France noted that her business relies heavily on working with past clients and others referred to her by those clients.
