Consumer Expo to take place April 16 in St. Charles The third annual Consumer Expo will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 16 at the Sportsplex, 1400 Foundry St., St. Charles. Pictured is a scene from last year’s expo.

The St. Charles Chamber of Commerce has just the thing to help you with all of those spring needs, the third annual Consumer Expo.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 16, the expo will be at the Sportsplex, 1400 Foundry St., St. Charles. The entertainment, sponsored by Rocket Fizz, includes wonderful, fun acts that will perform and keep you and your children entertained.

Some of these acts include Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles; and dance performances from 3rd Street Dance & Theatre Academy, Fred Astaire Dance Studio and the St. Charles Park District.

There also will be appearances from local mascots throughout the day. There will be face painting all day, provided by our sponsor, Colonial Café. The St. Charles Park District is the bounce house sponsor, so bring your kids to have some fun at this expo.

This year, the expo has partnered with the St. Charles Public Library, St. Charles Park District and St. Charles School District 303, and will have a section for the Early Childhood Resource Fair to celebrate “Youth Week.” These community partners will have information on all the offerings to children. They will also have developmental school screenings, storytime and hands-on activities.

Sweet time at maple sugaring event in St. Charles

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Rod Campbell on Sunday talked about how Native Americans collected sap from sugar maples, burning off the water until all that was left was sugar that they would eat and trade with other tribes.

“When the western European settlers came, they said, ‘Hey, that’s pretty cool. We don’t have to worry about moving sugar from the West Indies to Great Britain. We can make our own local sugar,’ ” Campbell said. “They couldn’t go to Jewel and buy it, obviously.”

Campbell, a volunteer with the Kane County Forest Preserve District, helped out Sunday during the annual maple-tapping festival, Maple Sugaring Days, at Creek Bend Nature Center in the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles.

A crowd of 517 attended the two-day event on Saturday, and even a drizzly cold rain Sunday could not keep families from attending to learn about how maple syrup is made. The district sold most of the 18 cases of of syrup brought

Campbell showed groups how Native Americans developed a spile from a hollow stick, which they used as a spigot to funnel tree sap into a bucket.

Later, immigrants used drilling tools to make holes in maple trees to collect the sap, he said.

Campbell said depending on the area, maple sugaring occurs only in a two-week period in the early spring.

Outside at a maple tree, volunteer Suzi Myers of St. Charles explained that on Saturday, which was warmer and sunny, sap flowed much more easily than it did on a cold, cloudy day like Sunday.

Huntley residents Pedro and Daniela Canache and their sons Daniel, 7, and Chris, 3, were among those learning about how maple syrup is made from sugar maple trees.

“It was very educational for the kids,” Pedro Canache said. “We didn’t

know much about how maple sugar is made before this. It was very entertaining – despite the rain. It was worth it for the kids. It was fun.”

Daniela Canache said they loved what Creek Bend Nature Center had to offer.

“It has educational programs for the kids all year long,” Daniela Canache said. “And we are more than happy to drive 20 miles to participate.”

Voters choose county, congressional, senate, presidential candidates

bschory@shawmedia.com Kane County voters will choose their party’s nominations in today’s primary races as they vote for nominees to run in the Nov. 8 general election.

Polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.

Kane County Chief Deputy Clerk and Director of Elections Suzanne Fahnestock said 18,231 early votes were cast from Feb. 29 through 3:45 p.m. Monday.

Early voting closed at the clerk’s office at 4:30 p.m. and at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin at 5 p.m.

Monday, she said.

Grace-period voting has totaled 830 voters so far, she said. Grace-period voting is when a person registers and votes the same day.

“The lobby is full of people,” Fahnestock said. “I’m very, very pleased.”

As to whether there will be long lines on primary day, Fahnestock said if that happens, her office would be ready and prepared.

“We are very pleased people are coming out to vote because we work so hard to put an election together,” Fahnestock said. “It’s great.”

••• Republican races among county-wide offices are for board chairman, with incumbent Chris Lauzen and challenger Ken Shepro; for auditor with incumbent Terry Hunt and challenger Craig Lee; and for coroner with incumbent Rob Russell and challenger Bob Tiballi.

Also for coroner, Tom Martinez and John Shoemaker are vying for the Democratic nomination.

In the Republican primary, incumbent Kane County Board member Susan Starrett is facing challenger Doug Sullivan in the 10th District, and incumbent Drew Frasz is facing challenger Jim MacRunnels in the 18th District.

Voters also will see contests in the 11th, 14th and 6th Congressional districts.

Jesse Maggitt, Jim Walz and John Hosta all are seeking the Democratic nomination in the 14th District.

The winner would run against incumbent U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, in November.

The Geneva Fox River Redevelopment Project Area covers commercial and multifamily residential properties and public open space along the river, officials said. According to the plan’s

map, it includes the area where the shuttered Mill Race Inn is located.

“We have completed the plan and placed it on file at City Hall and on the city’s website,” said Cathleen Tymoszenko, economic development director.

A tax increment financing district is a development tool municipalities use that diverts the increased assessed value of property and sales taxes for redevelopment.

Various mediums – including photography, sculpture, watercolor, music, dance, computer and pencil and paper – will be accepted, the release states.

Carole Beth Burnette, 77, passed away peacefully on Nov. 20, 2015, in South Carolina after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Beth was born in Springfield, IL spent her early childhood in Kewanee, and then moved to Evanston with her family in her early teens. It’s there that she put down roots and eventually enjoyed raising a family of her own. Beth moved to the Washington D.C. area to pursue her career in Association work where she began an interest in historic homes and American history. Ultimately, Beth moved back to Illinois to be near family, settling in Geneva, and finally retiring in St Charles.

During that time she performed charity work through her church and Tri-City Family Services. From early on Beth had a passion for camping, which she passed on to her children.

Alan James Read, age 85, of Indianapolis, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Rosegate Village in Indianapolis.

He was born on Feb. 20, 1931, in Geneva, IL as the son of Arthur and Edith (Petersen) Read.

He graduated from Batavia High School in 1949. He served in the Marines from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. Alan married Donna (Schiedler) on November 18, 1950, in Batavia, IL. He worked for Bostonian Shoes as the outlet director for 34 years before retiring in 1988. He also became co-owner of KOA Campgrounds for 10 years, that he owned with his wife. Mr. Read was a member of Cumberland Christian Church. He enjoyed traveling, camping and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alan is survived by his wife, Donna Read of Indianapolis; children, Marcia Wood of Indianapolis, Thomas Read of Ellington, CT, Laura (Scott) Clark of Santee, SC, Sandra (Jonathan) Myers of Tonganoxie, KS and Linda Read of North Aurora, IL; sister, Lois Laidig, of Ohio; 13 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

asloboda@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – In a cost-saving measure, the St. Charles school board on Monday unanimously approved a boundary change affecting more than five dozen elementary school students.

St. Charles School District 303 is expected to save about $150,000 annually through reduced busing and staffing costs by shifting two areas

currently assigned to Ferson Creek Elementary School to Corron Elementary School beginning in the 2016-17 academic year, staff said.

Staff noted the affected residents live in the Thornwood subdivision, which is within walking distance of Corron.

The 66 affected students may remain at Ferson Creek as long as their parents provide transportation.

The board did, however, discuss the possibility of providing transpor-

tation to those students for a limited time, such as the first year.

Noting that 15 of the 66 students will be fifth-graders next year, board member Corinne Pierog asked whether the district could use a smaller, less costly bus to transport those students to Ferson Creek.

Board member Kathy Hewell cautioned Pierog from assuming that only the incoming fifth-graders will want to stay at Ferson Creek. Parents of second-graders might want to re-

main at the school, she said.

Superintendent Don Schlomann agreed that the district doesn’t yet know how many students will decide to stay at Ferson Creek, and district-provided transportation can’t be limited to one grade level.

How one views the history book

My most important moment in school, at least in relation to what I do for a living, was when my high school U.S. history teacher, Al Ladendorff, encouraged our class to criticize the textbook.

I never had heard a teacher say that before. Could I really do it?

This led to a life of gleefully pointing out flaws in books, newspapers and television and to happy employment as a Washington Post reporter and columnist.

Arlington parent Hans Bader, a lawyer who knows what fun it is to challenge authority, is trying to encourage that same kind of critical thinking in his third-grade daughter, and in the rest of us. In a post on the Liberty Unyielding website – “Sugar-coated lies? My daughter’s politically correct history textbook” – he decries what he sees as big errors and false analyses in his daughter’s widely used history textbook, “Our World Far & Wide,”

“It is unlikely to achieve anything other than depriving kids of a solid grasp of their country’s history,” he said. “It depicts a nation in Africa that had little effect on the world as one of the world’s three great civilizations.”

Much of what Bader says will make many readers furious or sad.

That is how I felt when he asserted that the book’s inclusion of the ancient Mali Empire as a great civilization and its mentioning of such figures as Cesar Chavez as great Americans “may reflect a clumsy ham-handed attempt to make certain people (like minority children and residents of non-wealthy areas) feel better about themselves.”

My wife and I, both native Californians, think U.S. history textbooks ignore important events in the West. That’s not because we crave self-esteem but because we

think readers are getting a distorted view of our country and its history.

Millions of Americans, including me, have the same problem with textbooks that say little or nothing about Africa and important people who weren’t white.

Such discussions often become heated and personal, and they go nowhere because most of us don’t like yelling or being yelled at. I propose that we calm down and treat Bader and critics like him as neighbors and parents who mean well, even if their words sometimes drive us to distraction. Bader did, for instance, expose an error in the book about population growth in Roanoke.

How are our children going to learn to think for themselves if we explode at every disagreement? My view of “Our World Far & Wide” is different from Bader’s. I hope my grandsons are assigned the book when they reach third grade. And it doesn’t say that ancient Mali was “one of the world’s three great civilizations,” it says it was “one of the world’s great empires,” of which there were dozens. It makes a clear distinction between Mali and ancient Greece and Rome, “two mighty civilizations (that) have left big marks on the way we live.”

You can’t get everyone into a third-grade book that is just 64 pages long. We can have peaceful debates about who and what is most important. Research shows that parents and grandparents are the most effective teachers of children at that age, so Bader and I can add any lessons we want. Kids might not listen as carefully as we would like, but they will remember we had a disagreement with what they were reading.

That can inspire useful, if contrarian, thinking for the rest of their lives.

Traxler reflects on decorated career that ‘moved by so fast’

kdruley@shawmedia.com Nathan Traxler earned his first varsity wrestling victory for Marmion on the third Saturday of December 2012.

He spent the final two Saturdays of last month completing a would-be coronation as one of the top athletes in program history.

A 160-pound fill-in against Plainfield Central then and a 182-pound stalwart and two-time defending IHSA Class 3A state champion now, Traxler finally finds occasion to pause. The repeat Kane County Chronicle Wrestler of the Year hardly can believe he no longer will be a Cadet in a few weeks.

“It just feels like that first match was a couple days ago, you know,” Traxler said. “And having it be over already, it seemed like it moved by so fast. But it was a great experience.”

Traxler, a senior, finished his final prep season at 49-2. For the record, his last Marmion victory came via forfeit, as he represented the Cadets at 220 pounds in the Class 3A team dual state tournament championship against Oak Park-River Forest.

Although that weight might one day suit the lanky, 6-foot-2 Traxler, he doesn’t foresee it happening anytime soon. He competed at 182 in each of his four state series at Marmion, and figures to hover in that range when he enters Stanford’s program in the fall.

“I don’t know; I just feel comfortable at that weight,” Traxler said.

“I’m comfortable with the guys that I’m wrestling. I mean, I’ve gotten bigger through the years just doing the weights more, but I just feel at home at that weight. It’s where I’ve felt the best in high school, so far.”

“So far” merely was a reflexive ending to an answer. Traxler wrestled his final individual tournament bout at Marmion on Feb. 20, defeating Sandburg junior Patrick Brucki, 9-3, for the individual state championship in Champaign.

A week later, Traxler helped the Cadets to a runner-up finish at the dual team state tournament. He earned a first-period fall at 220 in a quarterfinal against Montini before sitting out a semifinal rout of Providence to allow

For Traxler, stretch-run adjustments amounted to simplicity. He focused on finishing shots and not allowing opponents to tie up his legs if they tried to get easy leverage against his longer bottom half.

by first-period fall – en route to Champaign.

Two falls and a major decision opened his state tournament run before Traxler encountered Brucki. The title bout was scoreless after one minute, but Traxler soon used his agility and reach advantage to build a 4-1 lead after the first period.

A few minutes later, the referee raised Traxler’s hand and presented him to the crowd as state champion.

Another Saturday as a Cadet, another dose of elation.

DARIEN – It took the Fox Valley Hawks two full periods and 38 seconds to take their first lead in Game 2 of the Illinois Suburban Hockey League Cougar Cup finals on Sunday evening.

That lead lasted all of 15 seconds.

Then, in just another blink of the eye – 28 seconds to be precise – the DuPage Stars had the lead for good at the Darien Sportsplex.

The Stars staved off elimination with a 7-4 victory to tie the best-ofthree series at 1. The decisive Game 3 is set for 3 p.m. Saturday at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville.

“There’s nothing you can do there.

That’s a good hockey team,” Hawks coach Phil Gabrielsen said. “I have nothing bad to say about our team.

That goalie was sophomore Theodore Morrissette, who didn’t play in Game 1. He made 31 saves, including a penalty shot late in the third period.

“We know they’ve got some big scorers and he came up big,” Stars coach Chaz Davis said. “We were happy about that.”

Fox Valley (26-9-4) trailed 2-0 late into the second period, but its offense came to life in the final five minutes of the period, getting goals from Josh Gadow (St. Charles East), Evan Anderson (East) and then from Brock Williams (Kaneland) with only 24.4 seconds remaining to tie the game at 3.

“It was an odd man rush and a twoon-one and Morgan York (East) had the puck,” Williams said. “He kind of lost it in crossing the blue line and it went in the corner and I just happened to throw my stick at it and redirect it.”

Jake Hummel (Kaneland) wasted no time in giving the Hawks something to celebrate after a brief intermission between periods. He scored less than a minute into the third period with Gadow and Trevor Kurtzhals (St. Charles North) assisting.

“We had drawn up a faceoff play and Josh (Gadow) pulls it back to T.K. (Kurtzhals) and he takes a low shot,” Hummel said. “I got the rebound and it worked.”

John McCarthy followed with unassisted goal 28 seconds later and the Stars recaptured the lead and seized momentum.

“In the first game, we had the biggest meltdown we’ve had all season,” Davis said. “And we’re usually resilient because we have players who can score and they understand that any game can turn on the dime, so you’ve

got to keep a level head. I think we learned our lesson and steered clear of the big icebergs and bounced off the small ones.”

Anthony Spano gave the Stars an insurance goal with 10:58 remaining, while Morrissette thwarted York’s penalty shot with 4:37 left to maintain the two-goal advantage. Michael Schuten sealed the game with an empty-netter with 14.7 seconds remaining.

“We just might’ve given them a little too much space, but I was impressed with how we came back from being down and climbing back into it,” Gabrielsen said. “Now we’ve got to see if we can do what we need to do on a neutral site. It’s going to be an interesting week leading up to (Game 3) and we’ll see what we can do.”

Vladar earns USHL nod

GENEVA – Chicago Steel goaltender Daniel Vladar was named CCM/USHL goaltender of the week Monday for the period ending March 14.

A third-round selection of the Boston Bruins in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Vladar went 2-0 during a weekend sweep of the Team USA national development program at Fox Valley Ice Arena, stopping 53 of 55 combined shots. He also stopped all five Team USA shootout attempts in Saturday’s victory. Vladar, an 18-year-old from Prague, Czech Republic, ranks second in the USHL in goals-against average (2.08) and save percentage (.926).

The metal iceboxes are not as expensive. *** Q: I have a heart-shaped dish our family tradition claims was used for very special ice cream sundaes at a soda fountain about 1930. It had special meaning for my grandparents who kept it displayed on a shelf in the living room. I wonder if you know anything about its special use. Was it for special occasions? The original heartshaped dishes had a grapevine or a hearts-and-flowers design pressed into the glass. The signature of the inventor of the dipper, John Manos, was also part of the design. New heart-shaped glass dishes sell for just a few dollars today. The 1925 dishes sold wholesale in a set of 24 dishes and a dipper for $8.28. In recent years, a single dish has auctioned for about $1,000. *** Q: I bought two large cups with handles with a shield mark. Inside the shield there is a horn with the words “Porcelaine” above it and “De Sologne, LaMotte” and the number “3” below. The pattern is a pretty splay of pink flowers and green leaves and the rim inside is gold-gilt palmettos. The shield itself is all in gold. I can’t find any-

thing like it. Can you help?

Get a clue to the age of an antique from part of the style, like a ball and claw foot on a Chippendale chair of the 18th century, or a hammered aluminum bowl of the 1930s. But sometimes the style is unfamiliar and even the use is a mystery. The most daring designers of the 1920s era were making Art Deco pieces with geometric designs, symmetry and a streamlined look. But some artists created their own styles and even used unique pieces of metal or other unusual materials. Oscar Bach (1884-1957) was born in Germany and studied painting and metallic arts. He became artistic director of a firm winning awards for his designs.

He used the signs of the zodiac, mythological figures, grapevines, masks, grotesque figures and other designs from the past. Jewels adorned some special-order boxes and book covers. In 1911, he moved to the United States to join his brother. They formed the Oscar B. Bach Studios and marked almost all of their work with that name. Most of his metal work was made to order. After Bach had an unfriendly split with a partner, not his brother, he was upset to learn the ex-partner continued to use his designs, selling the metal work with no name or a new name. This has caused confusion for today’s collectors. But the quality and originality of Bach’s

work can be identified by experts.

A strange iron table and chair “in the manner of Bach” sold at Cowan’s Auctions in Cincinnati in the winter of 2015. It has a marble top on an iron cabinet with enamel painted doors and extra tall, thin legs. The front is decorated with brass panels of nudes and a clue to its use. Each figure is holding a telephone receiver.

The matching chair with dragons and a spire on the back also is of twisted iron and brass. Another clue, the telephone stand or table is a furniture form that was in use from about the 1915 to the 1960s.The piece is not marked, so it sold for only $450, much less than an authenticated work

by Bach. Even if the new owner does not need furniture to hold a phone and note pad for a seated pers on taking a call, the Bach-like stand and chair will be a conversation piece. *** Q: I’m looking for information about an old icebox with the name plate “Ice-Way Approved Refrigerator with corkboard insulation, built especially for the ice industry.” When was it made and what might it be worth?

A: Ice-Way refrigerators were sold under the brand name “Leonard” and were made by the Grand Rapids Refrigerator Company. The company was founded

by Charles H. Leonard in 1881 as the Leonard Refrigerator Company. At first it made wooden icebox cabinets. Electric refrigerators were made in 1918. Leonard Ice-Way refrigerators were made in several styles and sizes. They

24 Consult doctor before quitting alcohol Dear Dr. K: My husband has a problem with alcohol. He finally has decided to quit, and has set a date for his final drink. How will his body react once he stops? Is there anything we can do to help ease his withdrawal symptoms?

Dear Reader: Alcohol withdrawal refers to the changes the body goes through when a person who has been drinking heavily for a long time suddenly stops.

Alcohol has a slowing effect on the brain. In a heavy, long-term drinker, the brain almost continually is exposed to this depressant effect of alcohol. In response, the brain adjusts its own chemistry to compensate. It does so by producing larger-than-normal amounts of stimulating chemicals.

If a person suddenly stops drinking alcohol, the brain still is bathed in the stimulating chemicals – but no longer has the alcohol to slow it down. It’s like a car with the gas pedal floored that has lost its brakes. Not surprisingly, most withdrawal symptoms occur when the brain is overstimulated.

The symptoms of alcohol withdrawal occur in a predictable pattern after the final drink. Not all people experience all symptoms: • Tremors (shakes). These usually begin within five to 10 hours after the last drink and typically peak at 24 to 48 hours. Along with tremors (trembling), they include a rapid pulse, an increase in blood pressure, rapid breathing, sweating, nausea and vomiting, anxiety or a hyper-alert state, irritability, nightmares or vivid dreams and insomnia.

• Alcohol hallucinosis. This symptom usually begins within 12 to 24 hours after the last drink, and may last as long as two days once it begins. If this happens, a person sees, hears or feels things that are not real.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff • Alcohol withdrawal seizures. Seizures may occur six to 48 hours after the last drink. It is common for several seizures to occur over several hours. The risk peaks at 24 hours.

• Delirium tremens. This is the most dangerous form of alcohol withdrawal. This condition occurs in about one out of every 20 people who have withdrawal symptoms.

Its peak intensity is usually four to five days after the last drink.

People suffering from delirium tremens are very agitated and have hallucinations. In my experience, they often see animals that aren’t there – domesticated and wild. They have very rapid pulse, rapid breathing, high blood pressure, very high fevers and profuse sweating.

They may get severely dehydrated, and their body minerals can get dangerously out of balance. If untreated, delirium tremens can be fatal.

It sounds as though your husband is planning to quit at home. Before he does, he should consult with his doctor. The doctor might think it is safer if he is in a medical setting. If not, the doctor can give him advice and prescribe medicines to make withdrawal symptoms more tolerable. If your husband experiences severe vomiting, seizures or delirium tremens during withdrawal, let his doctor know – but also get him to a hospital. When the girl was 7, she was sent to live with her grandmother in the country, and she has lived there for five long years. They obviously have bonded because the girl and her grandmother love each other very much. The girl wrote her mother recently remarried and now wants her back. The girl is confused and doesn’t know what to do. You told her to return to her mother.

That is bad advice. Even though the girl said she loved her mother, she probably loved her grandmother more. I’m sick and tired of parents dumping their kids off for a grandmother to raise, (without funds no less) and then taking them back whenever they darn well please.

I think the mother is very selfish. Where was she when the girl needed to be fed, needed a bed, needed medical care? She was nowhere to be found. Why does she think she can raise the girl better than the grandmother?

And doesn’t anyone care about the grandmother’s feelings?

I’m 82 years young, and I can raise a child a heck of a lot better than many of today’s mothers.

Regardless of how it enters the body, cocaine is a powerfully addictive drug. As a snorter, your boyfriend is hardly safe, and if I were you, I’d look elsewhere for a future husband.

His life will be out of danger only if he vows to give up cocaine entirely and enters a rehab program. Once he’s been drug-free for a year, it might be possible to reconsider him as a suitable husband and father of your children.

When East actually played low, West led another club. South won, played a spade to dummy’s ace, and led another spade. West cashed her diamond queen to hold South to 10 tricks. But minus 430 was still a top.

West should have played low on the first spade, because if South had held the king, he would have cashed that honor first.
