Ten will compete for Mr. Kaneland crown KANELAND CONNECTION Al Lagattolla

MAPLE PARK – Ten students from Kaneland High School will be vying for the title of Mr. Kaneland. The event takes place at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Kaneland High School auditorium, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park.

The event was created by the school’s student council “to raise money for the Kaneland Cares Fund to help those in need in our own Knight community,” according to a news release. Lori Grant, a student council co-sponsor, wrote in an email that the event has raised more than $30,000 since it was launched in January 2007.

Grant wrote that the goal is to raise $5,000. She added that the donations have been in the $4,000 to $6,000 range over the past few years.

Feb. 26 in the Kaneland High School auditorium, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park. The cost of admission is a bracelet that costs $5, and they can be bought from any member of the Mr. Kaneland court. Bracelets can be obtained by sending an email to lori.grant@ kaneland.org or sally.wilson@kaneland.org, and they will be available at the door.

Ten boys from the school will participate – Dean Divizio, Quarvonte Glover, Mace Jendruczek, Jarod Kovach, John Lim, Patrick Murphy, Michael Petrik, Diego Ruiz, Harrison Saylors and Tanner VanHorn.

Contestants will compete in categories such as formalwear, talent and casual wear, as well as a question-and-answer session.

“The talents this year range from stand-up comedy, ukulele playing, a jazz combo, singing, dancing and a taekwondo demonstration,” Grant wrote.

According to the release, points are earned for each category, but the majority of the points will be scored in the fundraising category. Participants have been collecting money for the event.

The cost of admission is a bracelet that costs $5, and bracelets can be bought from any member of the Mr. Kaneland court.

“It is indeed a light-hearted, fun, fast-paced event,” Grant wrote. “It is a fundraiser, so there will be additional opportunities in the evening to make donations to the Kaneland Cares cause.”

Also, Grant wrote that bracelets will be available to buy at the door on the night of the event. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

GENEVA – Kindergarten registration in Geneva School District 304 will be from 4 to 7 p.m. March 1. Each elementary school will register new kindergartners for the 2016-2017 school year.

Children must be 5 years old by Sept.

1, 2016, to register for kindergarten. Parents can register their children at their school, and appointments are not needed.

To expedite the registration process, the forms can be downloaded from the district website, geneva304.org, and completed in advance. District boundary maps are online, so parents can determine which school a child will attend.

In addition to the completed admissions paperwork, parents need to bring their child’s original birth certificate or a certified copy; two documents confirming residency in the district, such as a property tax bill, utility bill

or document from a closing or rental lease; and the parent or guardian’s photo identification, such as a driver’s license or passport.

Parents are encouraged to attend the admissions event because it helps district officials plan for space and staffing needs.

Parents unable to attend the event should contact the central office at 630463-3000 after March 1, but as soon as possible, to schedule a registration appointment.

LOCAL BRIEF Community dinner to be held

GENEVA – Friday is the next Free Third Friday Community Dinner at Fox Valley Presbyterian Church, 227 East Side Drive, Geneva. It will take place from 5 to 7 p.m.

FARMLAND VALUES Market strong for high-quality land

editorial@kcchronicle.com There is good news and bad news facing Kane County farmland owners this year.

The good news is values for high-quality land should hold steadier in 2016. But the bad news is a softer agricultural land market likely will continue throughout the United States with lower-quality land values expected to decline somewhat, according to Omaha, Nebraska-based Farmers National Co., the nation’s leading farm and ranch real estate company.

“Farmland values in Kane County are holding strong and still increasing in value when we look at the average sale price per acre between 2014 and 2015,” said Nick Westgerdes, a Rochelle-based FNC Illinois field representative.

Overall decreases in scattered Illinois farmland values tend to be more in the hundreds, not thousands, of dollars per acre, he adds.

Nevertheless, land values, in general, will remain historically high when compared with long-term trends, which might encourage new buyers to enter the market or existing investors to expand portfolios, according to the FNC.

Commodity price decline

Farmland values are beginning to experience small, incremental declines, primarily due to lower corn and soybean commodity prices, Westgerdes said, citing a recent consensus of most Illinois land brokers.

“In 2012, the price of a bushel of corn averaged roughly $6.67. Today, the price is closer to $3.50 per bushel in many cases,” he added.

In 2014, there were 46 sales in Kane County, including land development sales, he said. The average sale was $24,900 per acre when including the premium paid for various land development sales.

If sales likely for development purposes aren’t included, the average sale value for agricultural land dropped to $9,500 per acre.

In 2015, there were 58 sales in Kane County.

Despite a state-wide trend of decreasing farmland value, values for high-quality Kane County farmland have remained steady.

Meanwhile, high-quality farmland in Kane County (B+ and A quality) averaged $11,400 per acre in 2015.

“There were nearly 21 total sales that were made up of high-quality land,” Westgerdes said.

Farmers still will want to buy land when the right parcel comes up for sale, Westgerdes said, but they are being forced to offer less compared with offers made several years ago “when we were coming out of some of the most profitable years we have ever seen in the farming industry,” he added.

Albright and other neighbors objected to the proposal last week, as they did in July at a Committee of the Whole. Pepper Valley residents said there already was too much traffic, and even with restrictions on when the drive-thru can be open, a Dunkin’ Donuts would just add to the congestion.

Kenyon also operates a dairy farm and farms 1,600 acres of corn, soybeans and hay.

ST. CHARLES – A fast-food restaurant in St. Charles hopes to add beer and wine to its menu.

Brown’s Chicken, 1910 Lincoln Highway, is seeking a liquor license from the city. Overall, it received a favorable response from the Government Operations Committee on Tuesday, but three aldermen – Bill Turner, Jo Krieger and Maureen Lewis – voted against it.

Owner Noel Esbjorn, who earlier addressed the Liquor Control Commission, said he wants to “keep moving forward” with the restaurant, which he opened three and half years ago.

If the St. Charles City Council approves the liquor license, Esbjorn said he would serve bottled beer and small bottles of wine.

Although the license allows for alcohol to be served until midnight, Esbjorn said the latest he might stay open is 10 p.m., an hour later than the current

Winifred L. Kreitzer, 95, of The Holmstad in Batavia, formerly of Aurora, passed away Monday, February 15, 2016, at Michealsen Health Care. She was born April 16, 1920, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Edward and Lillian Ruth (nee Drotts) Fahlstrom. She was united in marriage to Kenneth A. Kreitzer on June 28, 1947, in Chicago.

Winifred was a 1938 Hirsch High School graduate. Upon her graduation from high school, she worked for Ostberg Seed Co. in Chicago from 1938 until 1949 as a business accountant. She then was employed at Sears in Aurora, as their bookkeeper for 19 years until her retirement.

She was an active member of the Batavia Covenant Church, where she served as a former Sunday school teacher, choir member, church secretary and member of the Covenant Women.

She enjoyed traveling, gardening and was gifted in silk floral arrangements. She treasured her special times and baking cookies with her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her three daughters, Janice (Keith) Gustafson, of Aurora, Karen (John) Morelli, of Lutz, Florida, and Susan (Robert)

The time to understand the science of dating and relationships is now. The issue goes even beyond happiness or successful marriages. By investing in our relationships, we can live longer, are more likely to survive cancer, have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and enjoy several other health benefits.

By educating ourselves on what science says about relationships, we can enter into the scene with a clearer understanding of ourselves and the opposite sex. It flies in the face of the old saying “opposites attract,” but studies have found that most happily married couples actually share very similar backgrounds and lifestyles. Knowing

this might offer a better idea about the type of person you are looking for. Also, understanding how “the pill” can affect female attraction is a fascinating area of study that can have a large effect on happiness and even divorce rates.

Once you find Mr. or Ms. Right, it’s important to know the molecule that makes them and you tick. Levels of testosterone affect everything in a relationship – from kissing preferences, female orgasm and preference for the time of day for sex. Once you know that, you’ll want to know how sleep, exercise, music and game day can affect testosterone.

Simply cuddling more after intercourse prolongs skin-to-skin contact, which increases another important molecule, oxytocin. Higher oxytocin levels increase relationship and sexual satisfaction. We are not above our biology – we should embrace it in an effort to live happier lives.

Washington can help bring an end to voter anger BLOOMBERG VIEW Democratic and Republican party elites have found common ground: panic over what happened in New Hampshire. For an antidote to their anxiety, they might consider changing the way they do business in Washington.

Voters in both major parties are demanding something, anything different from the dreary gridlock and acrimony that they’ve known for much of the past decade. Yet Washington appears impervious to the tremors rattling the presidential campaign.

President Barack Obama presented his $4.1 trillion budget to Congress earlier this month, and it was met with the usual verdict: dead on arrival.

The budget, which fleshes out Democratic priorities, is largely a symbolic exercise, since the White House and Congress struck a two-year spending deal last fall. Republicans are struggling to produce their own budget, and they seem unlikely to realize the dream of returning to an orderly appropriations process. True, there will be no government shutdown, which is something to be grateful for.

But it’s hard to find much solace in Washington’s stasis.

As usual, Washington’s perpetual antagonists appear to have agreed not to cooperate. Curiously enough, comity was a main theme of the speech Obama delivered to the Illinois state legislature on Feb. 10. “There are a lot of good proposals out there, and we have to work to find ones that can gain some bipartisan support,” he said.

In fact, Obama and congressional leaders have shown the capacity to find common ground when it suits them – as they did last fall when the spending deal came together.

And Obama and House Speaker Paul Ryan, taken at their word, actually have more than a few issues on which they appear to have areas of agreement: criminal justice reform, drug addiction treatment, poverty, trade, vocational training, visas for highly skilled workers, even tax reform.

If mainstream politicians of both parties are truly alarmed by the rise of Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, and the vague and troubling-isms that each represents, they can address the root cause and actually do something to blunt the insurgents’ advance: Make Washington work better.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Immediate fix for a chronic problem

To the Editor: Not very long ago, late April 2015, a few concerned staff members and parents from Kaneland High School reached out to Kane County Board member Drew Frasz. As the transportation chairman for Kane County, Mr. Frasz was suggested to us by our superintendent for business, Dr. Julie-Ann Fuchs. Dr. Fuchs has been a vital part of the ongoing communication and problem-solving for all roads leading to our Kaneland schools.

Fast-forward to a meeting at the high school over summer break, whereby Drew, Kaneland staff member John Pavlak and the two of us were able to come together and provide data from our SRO and dean of students; we were able to review the plan that Drew and his transportation team worked

out so that it would align with our vision of installing flashing lights and reducing speed limits. The Kane County transportation department did an amazing job of gathering data and noticed a definite spike in traffic that May – while school was in session – from the data they collected in June after students were on break.

We are happy to report that not only have we seen the flashing lights, but Drew and his team also have reduced the speed limit approaching our school zone from 50 mph to 45 mph, and, in case one forgets, the flashing light reminds travelers that – during school days and well into the evening for after-school events – they must reduce their speed to 35 mph. We also are pleased with the extra signs letting drivers know they are approaching Dauberman Road, a pivotal spot where most of the accidents

were a direct result.

Keslinger Road is a main artery from DeKalb to Elburn for the hundreds of Metra users each day. What was once a relatively small problem in slight fender-benders had become a constant problem within the population of our high school students. While the idea of installing a traffic light at Keslinger and Dauberman was thought to be the best solution, Drew was able to show us an alternative.

Thank you, Drew Frasz. It has been an honor working with you on this project, and we sincerely appreciate your willingness to listen to a small group of parents/faculty that just wanted to find an immediate fix for a chronic problem.

Consider senior forward Taylor Williams an extension of both the Vikings’ electricity and mindset.

Geneva cruised past the host Hilltoppers, 58-29, thanks in part to Williams’ physicality. It produced five points and one rebound in the first quarter, as well as an intangible mental edge.

“It was very key,” Williams said.

“I think we start better once we get going right off the bench. If we don’t get that start, we struggle a little bit, but definitely getting that fresh start was big.”

Second-seeded Geneva (23-4) asserted itself from the opening tipoff, scoring the game’s first nine points.

The Hilltoppers, clad in their white uniforms and representing the “home” slot on the scoreboard despite being the lower, No. 14, seed, did not register a basket until Grey Hayes converted a turnover into points with 4:22 remaining in the first quarter.

The Vikings’ response on their next possession encapsulated the flow of the game.

St. Charles North tops York, Geneva next

Boy, does the St. Charles North girls basketball team realize the reality of the Class 4A postseason.

Moments after clicking down the stretch to defeat York, 46-37, in Tuesday’s second Glenbard West Regional semifinal, the North Stars officially began discussing Thursday’s regional championship foe.

“Geneva’s going to be tough,” North Stars senior guard Kyla Helsel said. “Over my high school career, we’re 0-8 with them. But I’m going in with a positive outlook. I think it will be a good game because of this past experience of playing them so much.

We understand what they do, and they understand what we do. So it’s going to be a good game. It’s going to be a battle.”

Make no mistake, seventh-seeded North did its share of tussling Tuesday with the No. 10 Dukes, who turned heads during the final week of the regular season in an overtime loss to Upstate Eight Conference River Division co-champion Batavia.

The Bulldogs shared the league title with Geneva, which defeated North (22-8) twice during a one-week span last month, prevailing both times behind drive and discipline that lasted all four quarters.

Whether it was a self-described lack of urgency or effective defense from York (13-16), the North Stars started in an early hole in their postseason opener.

North went 2 for 12 from the field in the first quarter – including 0 for 3 from long range – while also struggling with turnovers. A 9-4 deficit after eight minutes proved to be surmountable, but its early effects still were evident.

“I feel like we kind of walked in there not really realizing that this could be our last game and kind of were like, ‘Oh, this is just another game,’ ” Helsel said. “But I think slowly, we realized this could be our last game together. We all picked it up, and I thought we finished well.”

Jakaitis recovered from early floor woes to hurt the Dukes from around the paint and baseline, offsetting the late, would-be heroics of York 3-point shooters Kristen Viola (nine points) and Kelly Polte (seven).

“We were finally getting the posts the ball at the right time with their seals,” Jakaitis said. “They were doubling down, so being able to rotate the ball really quick and look inside was really important.”

ver against its attack: double-teaming screen and roll plays.

“Once you get one, once you see a ball go through the rim, there’s a big difference,” North coach Sean Masoncup said. “There’s that mental edge.

And once we did that, we started playing well.”

Helsel, the program’s all-time leader in 3s, also finished in double figures with 11 points. Sophomore Grace Quinn, owner of a clutch, top of the key trey that provided a 10-point cushion with 1:47 to play, chipped in seven.

“I think that now, we’re starting to peak, and I’m interested to see what happens on Thursday,” Masoncup said. “Geneva’s a great team, you know, so all the pressure’s on them.

Austin Macias is a Sophomore with a record of 26-1 and he currently holds the school record for wins in a single season. This spring, he was a Greco State Champion. Austin took 2nd Place at Freestyle State.

This season Austin has reached the finals in four tournaments, winning three of them. He currently leads the team in Take Downs and Pins . Austin works hard on and off the mat and is considered a team leader.

Claire Jakaitis just became the fourth St. Charles North girls basketball in history to reach 1000 points on February 3rd against Streamwood. She has averaged 15 points a game and 7 rebounds for the season.

Earlier this season Claire signed her Division one letter of intent to play basketball at University of Loyola at Maryland. She is only the third girl in North history to receive a full scholarship to a division one university!

After some early-season struggles, David has become one of the most consistent scorers on Kaneland. He highlighted his good stretch with a 28-point, 14-rebound, five-block performance in the Knights’ win over Rochelle recently. David has made over 40-percent of his 3-point shots this season and close to 80-percent of his free throws.

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – To start its run in the Class 4A playoffs, the host Batavia girls basketball team set the tone in the regional semifinal for what it hopes to be a deep postseason run.

Playing on their home floor, the No. 3 seed Bulldogs jumped all over No. 18 Addison Trail in the first quarter and cruised to a 65-35 victory on Tuesday.

“We started the way we needed to start. Every once in awhile, we have one of those where we kind of ease into things for some reason,” Batavia coach Kevin Jensen said. “But we started off fast and we started off shooting the ball well.”

The Bulldogs opened with an 18-2 spurt and another 14-3 run in the second quarter pushed the lead over 20 points before halftime.

Batavia’s all-time leading scorer, Hannah Frazier, led the charge for the Bulldogs (25-5) with 31 points and 11 rebounds despite playing less than three full quarters.

“It was really good for us because we had total confidence the whole game,” Frazier said. “There was never a moment we doubted, and that’s really important for us going into the postseason. We want

The Bulldogs made sure to feed Frazier early and often while she was still on the floor. Frazier was 9 of 15 from the floor in the first half to go with a 5 of 6 mark at the free throw line, accounting for 23 points in the opening half. That was four more than the entire Addison Trail (10-18) team.

If the game plan sounds simple, that’s because it was.

“Basically, just give it to Hannah every time we have the chance. Usually, good things happen from there,” Jensen said with a laugh.

While the outcome was decided very early on in the game, Jensen thought it was important to close out the game effectively, as he was still coaching his reserves as hard in the fourth quarter as he did in the first quarter.

“I told the girls at halftime that the two words I needed them to think about were ‘focus’ and ‘finish,’ ” Jensen said.

“The idea is continue to play well as long as we can. It doesn’t guarantee anything as far as Friday goes, but I sure as heck wanted to make sure we finished this game feeling good and didn’t back up into a win and let them get back into the game.”

The No. 3 seed Bulldogs will compete in the regional final on Friday against No. 11 Glenbard North after the Panthers topped Schaumburg, 46-37, on Tuesday.

Surging Saints move on to semifinals

editorial@kcchronicle.com BARTLETT – The St. Charles East girls basketball team began post season play Tuesday by becalming the Bison.

Now, the Saints need to tame the Tigers.

East beat Fenton in the teams’ IHSA Class 4A Bartlett Regional quarterfinal, 57-26.

The Saints victory, their sixth in seven games, advances them to tonight’s semifinal game against Wheaton Warrenville South, which is seeded fifth in the Schaumburg Sectional.

East, ranked 12th in the sectional, is up for the challenge.

“I think we are playing our best basketball, which we should be at this time of the year,” East coach Lori Drumtra said. ”I would definitely say were peaking at the right time.”

“They’re a great team, it’s all you need to say,” Fenton coach Tim Anderson said. “They’re an outstanding team.

The Saints wasted no time in taking the lead.

Fenton (3-26) scored first on a Courtney Susmarski free throw in the opening seconds of the game. Susmarski led all scorers with 14 points.

On East’s next trip down the court, Kelly Rinker canned a 3-pointer from the top of the key, putting the Saints in front, 3-1. They never trailed again.

The Saints (14-15) responded with a 12-0 run to end the period with a 21-9 lead.

East continued its dominance in the second quarter and end ed the half with a 34-14 advantage.

All 13 players suited up for the game saw playing time as Drumtra rested her starters for a majority of the game.

“On a night like tonight, everybody got in which is always good,” Drumtra said. “Starters get some playing time but they also get to rest their legs. It’s kind of quick turnaround and it’s a late game, so it’s kind of nice to be able to do that.”

Only two starters were on the floor as the second half began and they were soon replaced. East led, 45-19, at the end of the third quarter.

Reserve Ashley DiOrio led the Saints with 12 points. Starters Hannah Vitkus and Sara Rosenfeldt both chipped in eight.

Eleven Saints scored in the game, including sophomore callups Katherine Weinzirl and Nicole Jordan.

AURORA – The Rosary girls basketball team – the No. 7 seed in the Class 3A IMSA Regional – took care of No. 8 Plano as early as it could, grabbed a double-digit lead in the first half and never trailed.

As a result, the Royals defeated the Reapers, 54-37, in a quarterfinal game on Tuesday.

With the win, Rosary (14-15) will face No. 1 seed Sycamore in the semifinal at 6 p.m. today. Plano ended its season at 11-18 overall.

“We can’t wait (to play Sycamore),” Rosary head coach Don Rasich said. “There’s no pressure on us whatsoever. I’ve watched them a couple times, and they are a great basketball team. It will be a challenge, but we’ll be up for it.”

Against Plano, Rosary scored the first nine points of the game and led, 13-9, after the first quarter.

The Royals took their first double-digit lead of the game at halftime, 33-23, on a bucket from Maura Van Bogaert with 6.6 second left in the first half.

“We expected more to start this game,” Rasich said. “I knew there were going to be jitters, but we were too complacent. ... but then we got

The Royals kept the double digit lead throughout the entire second half, even though Plano ended the third quarter on a 7-0 run. Entering the final quarter, Rosary led, 42-33.

Rosary started the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run for its largest lead of the game, 50-33, after a bucket from Aubrey Fisher with 5:29 left in the game.

Lauren Smith led the Royals with 13 points, finishing in double figures along with Van Bogaert (12 points) and Sophia Kramer (10 points). Plano was led by Rylie Loux’s 12 points. “(Rosary did) a nice job of getting out to our shooters,” Plano coach John Chernick said. “We had opportunities. We just didn’t get them in.

As a group, we didn’t shoot the ball well.”

Veteran Geneva football coach Rob Wicinski, who has compiled a 120-88 career record in 20 seasons with the Vikings and Niles North, will be inducted into the Illinois High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame on April 2 during a luncheon at Champaign’s Hilton Garden Inn. Wicinski, whose prep coaching career began as an assistant with his alma mater, Ottawa, has devoted himself to IHSA football for three decades. He helped transform Geneva from a struggling program into a flourishing one, helping the Vikings to a berth in the Class 7A state championship game in 2008.

Wicinski’s first season as Geneva head coach came in 1999. He is among 16 inductees in the IHSFCA Hall of Fame Class of 2016.

Beebe will receive a commemorative golden anniversary football as part of the NFL’s recognition of the 50th Super Bowl this month. School officials will present Beebe and his family with the ball at the assembly before placing it on permanent display at Kaneland.

After the assembly, Beebe will sign autographs of his book, “Six Rings from Nowhere,” which will be available for purchase. The book costs $20, and Beebe will donate $6 of each purchase to Kaneland. St. Charles East freshman 113-pound wrestler Justin Benjamin is one of four Saints who will represent the program at the IHSA state tournament at the University of Illinois’ State Farm Center in Champaign. Competition begins Thursday and continues through the finals Saturday night. Benjamin, the Kane County Chronicle-St. Charles Bank & Trust Athlete of the Week, finished third at sectionals and enters state with a 31-10 record. Here’s an edited transcript of his conversation with Chronicle sports editor Kevin Druley:

So I thought that was pretty cool, too.

Take me through your wrestling background.

I started in fifth grade. … I moved from Woodstock. I was a football player and I grappled, so my football coach told me to wrestle. So I tried it out. … I moved to St. Charles in seventh grade.

What will you work on most in practice in the lead-up to state?

I need to work on my moves on the top.

What else should I know?

Dear Abby: There is a topic I haven’t seen addressed in your column, namely being sexually abused by a spouse.

I ended my marriage because my husband was waking me at 2 a.m. demanding sex. He expected me to have sex only a week after I had our baby, although my doctor had said I should wait six weeks.

If I thought something he wanted me to do was degrading, he insisted I do it anyway.

It amazes me the subject of spousal abuse isn’t mentioned in premarital counseling. No one seems willing to acknowledge this kind of abuse exists.

Is there even a “survivors” network or support group to cope? I went to individual counseling, but it didn’t help me.

I think it would be helpful if society would acknowledge this kind of thing does happen. I also think those who offer premarital counseling should be required to discuss the warning signs of a sexual abuser. – The Ex Mrs.

No one has the right to coerce a partner into doing something she or he doesn’t want to do, whether it’s done through physical violence or relentless verbal abuse.

When there is forced sex in a marriage, the name for it is marital or spousal rape. Like any other kind of rape, it is not an act of love but a way of asserting control and dominance.

Talk to people you know to get a recommendation. Good practitioners get good results and generate positive referrals.

Find out if a medical center in your area has an alternative or integrative medicine program. Such programs typically offer massage by qualified practitioners: people licensed to practice in your state and certified by a national organization such as the American Massage Therapy Association (www.amtamassage.org).

When I was just beginning medical practice, I learned a valuable lesson. A woman in her mid-80s told me she had trouble sleeping. I told her about the various ways to improve her “sleep hygiene,” such as going to bed and getting up at the same time each day, not watching TV while in bed, etc.

When I saw her a few months later, she said a massage therapist had cured her sleep problem – and implied my advice hadn’t done much good. What was keeping her up (as I would have known, had I asked her more questions about her sleep problem) was chronic back pain. That was resolved with massage – and she slept like a baby.

Dear Dr. K: My back is always sore. A friend suggested massage therapy might help. Massages are expensive, so I want to make sure there’s some evidence behind this. Is there?

Dear Reader: Massage used to be considered an indulgence. But now it’s recognized as a legitimate therapy for some painful conditions – including back pain.

Therapeutic massage may relieve pain in several ways. It may relax painful muscles, tendons and joints, or relieve stress and anxiety. It even may change the way the brain processes pain signals.

Many types of massage are available in the United States, with Swedish massage being the most common. It involves long, gliding strokes and kneading of the major muscle groups, as well as friction, gentle rhythmic slapping and vibration. Other massage techniques include deep-tissue, pressure-point, Thai and neuromuscular massage. (I’ve put a table describing different types of massage, and what they involve, on my website, www.askdoctork. com.)

Massage therapy also can involve varying degrees of pressure. Massage doesn’t have to be painful to be therapeutic, so be sure to tell your therapist what type of touch you prefer (light touch, firm pressure, hard pressure).

Massage should not be the only treatment you use for back pain. Instead, use massage in addition to standard care. That includes taking anti-inflammatory pain relievers, staying as active as possible, getting physical therapy and giving your body time to heal. When added to the mix, massage can reduce pain and speed your return to normal activities.

My daughter told no one and kept the secret from age 12 to 15 so the family would stay together. I

was totally unaware of this. We had a beautiful home, nice cars and a good income. She told me he threatened her all this would be gone, so she sacrificed her emotional stability instead of causing the family to be “ruined.” This went on until she became ill, both physically as well as emotionally.

After visiting several doctors and spending a lot of money on therapists, she finally told me what was going on. I was totally unaware and completely devastated about this, and immediately took action to do everything possible to start my daughter’s recovery from this. The two of us still are receiving professional counseling.

Her stepfather now is spending time behind bars, and he soon will be my ex-husband. My daughter and I never want to see or hear from this pervert ever again. – Mom, Jackson, Missis-

At the bridge table, exceptions keep the game alive. For example, you have J-9-6-4 in the dummy opposite A-Q-10-7 in your hand. To play that suit for four tricks, you should finesse through your right-hand opponent. It gives you a 50-50 shot at avoiding a loser. Instead, to lead the jack and then to put up the ace wins only when lefty has a singleton king, which has an a priori probability of just under three percent. Mathematically, it is a crazy play. But can you think of any reasons why it would be the right play?

Now look at the North-South hands in today’s diagram. South is in four spades. West cashes the club ace and club king before shifting to a heart. How should South continue?

In the bidding, South’s two-club cue-bid was totally artificial, indicating at least 12 points. The rest of the auction was natural.

I can think of three reasons not to finesse in that suit. The first is fanciful: if you know righty will always cover an honor with an honor, regardless of its stupidity. The second will be the theme of tomorrow’s column.

This deal exhibits the third. Dummy has 14 points and declarer has 13.

That leaves only 13 for the opponents, but West opened -- he must have the spade king. So, there is no point in taking a losing finesse; you never know, you might get lucky and drop a singleton king.
