OUT AND ABOUT One Book, One Batavia campaign begins

BATAVIA – “Pride and Prejudice,” the classic tale of love and social commentary by 19th century novelist Jane Austen, is the One Book, One Batavia 2013 selection.

During February and March, Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave., will offer a book discussion and four programs inspired by the book and about its author.

A book discussion will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the library.

Copies of the book are available for checkout. At 2 p.m. March 3, the public is invited to spend time “In the Garden with Jane Austen” and with author Kim Wilson, who will discuss the role gardens played in the lives and loves of Austen and her characters. Eileen Shafer, author of Royal Teas with Grace and Style, will demonstrate a favorite ritual of Jane Austen’s era during “Taking Tea with Jane Austen,” at 2 p.m. March 10. On March 21, during Books Between Bites at noon, Diane Capitani of the Jane Austen Society of North America will examine the idea that money – not love – is what keeps the plot turning in “Pride and Prejudice.” Then, at 7 p.m., the library presents the One Book, One Batavia main event, “Jane Austen Speaks.” During this program, actress Debra Ann Miller’s portrayal of the author will delve into Austen’s personal life.

An evening with Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln

Parent University event in St. Charles

ST. CHARLES – St. Charles School District 303 is presenting a special edition of Parent University as part of a series of events during the district’s Suicide Prevention Week.

“Suicide Prevention: Teens at Risk, What All Parents Should Know” will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the District Administration Building board room, 201 S. Seventh St. It will be led by Denise Styer, clinical director for the Centers of Eating Disorders and Self-Injury Recovery Services at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital in Hoffman Estates.

She will explain why suicide needs to be discussed and will address related topics such as teen depression and anxiety, bullying, self-injury and how parents can become better at actively listening to their children.

Fermilab puts hands, brains to work at annual open house

By NICOLE WESKERNA nweskerna@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – From cryogenic marshmallows to homemade kaleidoscopes, there were plenty of hands-on science activities to choose from at Sunday’s family open house at Fermilab in Batavia.

Sue Dumford, docent with the Fermilab’s Education Office, said the annual event usually draws 1,500 to 2,000 people.

She said five high school groups participated Sunday in creating and administering science experiments to share with children in elementary school and junior high. At least a dozen Fermilab scientists also participated in showing different types of scientific experiments to families, she said.

In addition to some science shows, volunteers offered 18 hands-on experiments, including a magnet table, a gravity collider and “pull out the rug,” a game where children tried to pull a towel out from underneath an item without

the item moving.

That was one of the more exciting experiments, said Christoph Gaffud, 10, of Lombard. He and his mom, Maria Gaffud, had observed and participated in a few experiments before they took a Fermilab tour, which Christoph could finally take now that he’s 10.

“He loves physics and anything to do with science,” Maria Gaffud said. “This place is wonderful for him. He’s been wanting to see the accelerator.”

Christoph got to try a cryogenic marshmallow, which is a marshmallow dipped in liquid nitrogen made by Fermilab employee Jerry Zimmerman, who as Mr. Freeze puts on a cryogenics demonstration.

“It kind of feels like it’s cold at first, but then it’s crunchy and it starts melting,” he said.

Vipuli Jayesinghe and her daughter, Methuli Jayesinghe, 7, of Oak Brook checked out the shape shooter – a game in which a wooden shape was obscured by a pie tin while children guessed the shape of the wood by rolling marbles past it – while her 10-year-old

daughter took a tour.

“I didn’t think it was this interactive,” she said, adding she already had picked up some literature so her family could visit again next year.

Dumford said the family open house is a collaboration that’s sponsored by the nonprofit Fermilab Friends for Science Education organization, along with several high schools and Fermilab employees. She said the event is free to the public and is usually held the Sunday after the Super Bowl.

Dumford said ever since the Tevatron particle accelerator ceased operation in 2011, a lot of people have wondered if Fermilab is closed. She said that’s far from true, and that’s one of the reasons they host an open house.

“We want to let people know it is a viable laboratory with lots of cool stuff going on,” she said, adding that there are plenty of hidden gems, such as a dog-training area, a model airplane lab, cross country skiing paths and horse stables.

GENEVA – As she thought about it, Katlyn Eggar recalled several times that she and her husband, Justin, had danced together in public.

But none of them, she said, compared to the experience of taking the stage before hundreds of people, under the glare of the spotlight, with every eye in the room on one couple, as they performed a choreographed, practiced routine in a community-wide dance competition.

“I’m not nervous now,” Katlyn said, minutes before that competition began. “But I think I will be when it’s time to go out.

“I just keep telling myself that the main thing is for us to have fun.”

Saturday night, the Eggars, Allstate Insurance’s agents in Geneva, were one of six pairs to take to the dance floor at Eaglebrook Country Club on Fargo Boulevard, just east of Randall Road in Geneva, during the fifth annual Dancing with the Geneva Stars event.

The party and dance competition serves as one of the year’s big fundraisers for the Geneva Academic Foundation and the Geneva Cultural Arts Commission.

Saturday, more than 350 people bought tickets for the event, also contributing money each time they wished to cast a vote for any of the teams.

This year’s dancing couples included: • Kevin and Mary Keyzer, respectively, a process quality manager at Engineered Ceramics, and a teacher at Geneva High School; • Steve and Lynn Saunders, respectively, owner of Saunders Real Estate Solutions, and branch manager at First American Bank in Geneva; • Sam Hill and Dorothy Flanagan, each aldermen on the Geneva City Council; • Eric and Elizabeth Ott, respectively, owner of Geneva Running Outfitters, and a

All of the pairs were invited to dance by organizers of the event.

Kevin Keyzer said he would never have danced in the event, were it not for his wife’s enthusiasm.

“When I saw the smile it brought to her face, well, you do a lot of things to make your wife happy that you otherwise wouldn’t, you know?” Keyzer said with a laugh.

Once selected, each of the couples then were assigned to professional dance instructors by event patron, Linda Cunningham, founder of Geneva’s State Street Dance Studio.

The instructors had worked with the teams on their individual choreographed dance routines, as well as a group

dance, since last fall.

Adil Jaffer said the lessons and the practices required a large time commitment, but also brought enjoyment.

“It was more fun, I think, because of the time we got to spend together, just doing this as a couple,” Adil Jaffer said.

Justin Eggar said he knew what he was getting into before he and his wife were asked to participate, as they had attended the event the past few years.

“And I remember saying more than once, ‘We’re never doing that,’ ” Justin Eggar said, with a laugh. “And, well, here we are.”

Beginning at 8:15 p.m., the dance teams took the stage, each performing a different dance style to pop songs of the past and the present.

The Keyzers, for instance, performed a cha-cha themed routine to Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back,” while Hill and Flanagan performed a rhumba routine to “Stand by Me,” by Ben E. King.

The Eggars were selected

to perform a swing dance routine, and Katlyn said she was excited to have learned some swing steps.

She recalled a time she and her husband had attended a swing dance event in New

York City.

“It was a blast, but we couldn’t really swing dance,” she said. “Now, I’m looking forward to going back to something like that, and showing what we’ve learned.”

Marmion produces another healthy state haul

By KEVIN DRULEY kdruley@shawmedia.com PALOS HEIGHTS – Anthony Bosco, Johnny Jimenez, Jake Field and George Fisher are the lightest of Marmion’s seven wrestlers headed to next week’s IHSA Class 3A state tournament.

With their longstanding ties to the St. Charles North Youth Wrestling club, the quartet also carries the heaviest history.

Before seeing one another on the podium as the 3A Shepard Sectional concluded Saturday, Bosco (106 pounds), Jimenez (120), Field (126) and Fisher (132) – all of St. Charles – charted their teammates’ development.

“I mean, we’ve known each other since we were 5,” said Bosco, a junior, “and we’ve been pushing each other ever since then.”

St. Charles resident Alex Fritz (285) bookended the other side of the Cadets’ contingent bound for the University of Illinois’ Assembly Hall in Champaign. Teammates Trace Carello (145) and Cody Snodgrass (195) also will join them, along with Geneva senior 120-pounder Brad Martens.

A junior in search of his third career state crown, Jimenez claimed the first of Marmion’s two individual sectional titles. Fisher, a Michigan recruit, captured the other, the third of his career.

It’s the first 3A sectional crown in 3A for Fisher, who was a 2A state cham-

pion as a sophomore, but neither the new number – nor the competition – has fazed him since the Cadets moved up in class before the season.

“To be honest, I just go out there and wrestle. I don’t care which sectional is harder, which one is easier. I just want to wrestle,” Fisher said. “I just want to show everyone who’s No. 1 and who isn’t. That’s all I really care [about].

Doesn’t matter if it’s 1A, 2A or 3A. I just want to find out who’s the best.”

Top teams such as Sandburg, Marist and St. Rita offered plenty of competition to Marmion and the rest of the field.

The gauntlet made Martens, a return state qualifier, feel slightly more steeled in his accomplishment, especially after his recovery from an opening-round loss Friday.

“Senior year, these could be my last matches ever and I pulled them out,” Martens said. “This year, my mentality is different. I feel like I’m a lot more focused.”

Batavia will be without a state qualifier for the first time since 2001 after three senior captains fell one victory short of wrestling back to the thirdplace bout. The top four sectional finishers in each weight class advance to Champaign.

The Bulldogs’ fourth senior pillar and co-captain, Mickey Watson, already had been eliminated when he watched Joel Shump (126), Charlie Smorczewski (138) and Jon Wagner

(160) lose by no more than four points.

Shump and Wagner fell by a point each, with Shump losing, 7-6, in overtime to Jake Vales of Sandburg.

Shump, 40-3, entered last week’s Naperville Central Regional final with 37 wins to open the season before suffering his first loss in the title bout.

“They all wrestled really well, really hard today,” Watson said of his teammates. “I mean, with how much work we put in, it’s not like it’s not worth it.

It could have gone either way.”

Marmion advanced just more than half of its sectional qualifiers. Last week, 13 Cadets moved on from Naperville Central, where Marmion captured a team crown and a berth in the Hinsdale South team dual sectional after the individual state meet, which begins Thursday.

Many Cadets are multiple qualifiers, including Fritz, who’s aiming to place for the first time in four trips.

“I’ve felt stronger lately and hopefully that can happen,” he said.

Whether they hailed from the lighter side of the lineup or the heftier one, the Cadets credited their practice partners for helping them advance.

Half of the 14 weight classes will be represented in Champaign, with the rest of the lineup shouting from the stands along with family and friends.

“This is the hardest time of year you work for,” Jimenez said.

He’s not the only Cadet who knows the feeling.

Looked like the Kaneland boys had the Northern Illinois Big 12 East by the throat. Maybe not.

The Knights still have a good chance to tie or win the conference outright but they sure didn’t do themselves any favors by losing to a down-in-the-dumps DeKalb team on Friday, at home no less.

The Knights might well have to win one of their last two conference games, both on the road against decent teams (Morris and Rochelle), to win the conference.

Kaneland has struggled to score points for much of the season, which gives a team a pretty thin margin for error when it comes to defense, rebounding and tracking down loose balls. So the Knights got bit by the Barbs, giving some of the other teams in the conference new life.

The Knights have been a streaky bunch this season, and after losing two games to way-under-.500 teams this week, West Chicago and DeKalb, you have to wonder if one of them not-so-pretty streaks is at hand.

Sly’s sure the Knights aren’t thinking that way, and they’re still in darn good shape to win the conference.

But any notions of putting the conference away early in February now appear out the window.

Also, Sly wants to give a shout out to UEC River champion Larkin.

Naturally, woulda been nice for one of our Tri-Cities teams to win the conference, but the Royals showed they were the class of the conference this year, and they deserve to call themselves champions.

And congrats also are in order to the Geneva girls. Very impressive win over Neuqua on Friday, even with some help in the form of clanked Neuqua freebies. That St. Charles East Regional next week is going to be a must-see event.

If East wins, the Saints will advance to face Batavia in a 4A regional semifinal on Tuesday night.

The state meet will take place this weekend at Assembly Hall in Champaign, with Marmion and St. Charles East expected to lead the way for the area in Class 3A. This is the powerhouse Cadets first year competing in 3A after excelling in 2A in past years.

‘Hope’ abundant for Adduci, Saints after win over Bulldogs

ST. CHARLES – Dom Adduci’s mother, Jill, put forth a tremendous effort off the court.

Dom did the easy part – relatively speaking at least – in playing an excellent game on the court.

It all came together for a special night for Adduci, a junior guard for the St. Charles East boys basketball team, and the Saints, who walloped Batavia, 57-28, Saturday on East’s Hoops for Hope night to fight cancer.

A variety of fundraisers were tied to the game, including T-shirt and raffle sales, to generate revenue for the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. Jill Adduci was the ringleader of a well-supported push to coordinate the event.

Players on both teams dedicated the game to somebody in their lives who was affected by cancer. In Adduci’s case, that somebody is his mother.

“I think four years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and it was her idea to come up with this whole thing, and the plan for the night to donate for cancer and everything,” Adduci said. “I

felt like I was playing for her and everything we did was for her, so it was really special for me, definitely.”

The teams each wore matching, light blue Hoops for Hope T-shirts in warmups and big swaths of the crowd was also decked out in the shirts.

East coach Pat Woods and his assistants wore special shoes for the event.

“We always talk about as a teammate, being selfless, and giving up yourself for the good of the team, and tonight we tried to make it a cause bigger than that, something that goes outside of basketball,” Woods said. “ … It was a great night tonight. I thought we had great support from the fans, our parents did a great job coordinating and all that.

“I just thought overall it was a great night, and of course it helps that we won, too. That makes it even a little bit better.”

That part of the evening was hardly in question after the Saints jumped to a 16-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Saints forced 13 turnovers in the first half and had the Bulldogs’ offense under duress virtually the entire game.

Quick, active hands and

purposeful traps by East (15-8, 8-3 UEC River) bothered the Bulldogs (10-13, 4-7 UEC River), who, like the Saints, were coming off a conference road win the night before.

“Taking care of the ball, first and foremost, has to happen,” Batavia coach Jim Nazos said. “But St. Charles East did a really good job of making sure that didn’t happen.”

Adduci fed off the evening’s emotions in constructive fashion, scoring half of his 20 points in the opening quarter. Sophomore guard Cole Gentry added nine points and senior forward Ben Skoog pulled down eight rebounds to lead a strong Saints showing on the glass.

Junior guard Micah Coffey scored 10 points to pace the Bulldogs.

Despite his quality performance, Adduci considered his mother the real star of the night.

“She was constantly talking about it, calling different people, getting everyone involved, the cheerleaders, Jersey Mike’s, all the sponsors,” Adduci said. “I give all the credit to her. It was amazing how hard she worked for it, and it definitely came all together.”

But then I start up again. How can quit this ugly habit? – Manic in Grandview, Mo. Dear Manic: You have a problem that I’m told is shared by one in 12 adults.

There is more than one solution for it, and the common denominator in all of them is MOTIVATION. Some helpful suggestions submitted by readers in years past: 1. “What helped me to finally stop at age 45 was that I sat down and tried to figure out why I kept biting my nails. I finally realized it was because I couldn’t stand the feel of a rough nail catching on the fabric of my clothing.

“Now I keep emery boards, from coarse to fine, beside my favorite chair, in my purse, in my glove compartment and by my bed. If I feel a snag, I immediately smooth the offending nail. It has eliminated my need to bite.”

2. “My high school teacher included some interesting lessons in personal hygiene in his biology class. One day, he asked us to scrape under our fingernails and look at what we removed under a microscope. Seeing face to face what had collected under there was enough to stop me from biting my nails. I haven’t chewed them in nearly 30 years.”

3. “What stopped me was a job I landed as a teenager. I became an usher at a movie theater. My job required wearing a uniform, including white gloves. Not long after I landed the job, I noticed I had nice nails. The gloves were what did it.”

Dear Abby: Valentine’s Day is approaching, and I wanted to write concerning those of us who are single by choice, by circumstance, because of the death of a spouse or divorce.

This holiday was set aside to celebrate love and lovers, but it can be a lonely time for people who find themselves without a significant other.

Valentine’s Day is so commercialized that one is bombarded by ads for gifts, candy, etc., from every angle, which only enforces one’s aloneness. The message is subtly sent – but received loud and clear – that an individual without a partner is worthless.

I would like to urge your readers this year to include those who are alone through divorce or widowhood in their celebration of this day.

Make it a day on which they too can feel special, loved, and a part of things rather than isolated, forgotten and alone.

And don’t stop there. All holidays can be lonely for those who have lost loved ones. Include these people in your holiday plans. You will be blessed by sharing, and they will be uplifted to know someone cares. – Solo in Texas Dear Solo: Thank you for your letter. Readers, if you’re feeling down because you don’t have a special valentine, the surest cure for the blues is to do something for someone else. Call someone who’s alone to say, “I’m thinking about you.”

I assume that was produced by a scriptwriter – but no doubt Leno’s delivery was equally important.

Unless you are in an event where overtricks can be important (pairs or board-a-match), you should play your contracts as safely as possible. And if you succeed in a particularly tough deal, it will feel like a home run.

This three-no-trump contract would result in an out for many declarers at the table. How should South play after West leads the club nine?

North’s three-heart rebid promised five or more spades, four or more hearts and at least game-forcing values. (However, if North had six spades and only game interest, he might have jumped straight to four spades, keeping his heart suit hidden.)

West did not want to lead!

Eventually he chose the unbid suit.

South has eight top tricks: three spades, one diamond and four clubs. And those spades will surely provide at least one extra winner. But if declarer cashes his spade ace and plays a spade to dummy’s queen, he is called out – his contract has no chance.

Instead, South should finesse dummy’s spade 10 on the second round. When it wins, he rounds the bases to home. But even if the 10 loses to a potential jack with East, dummy’s three remaining spades will be high and a run will be scored.
