St. Charles man dies in collision

eschelkopf@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – Investigators are looking into a twocar collision that killed a St. Charles man Monday morning near Batavia.

Karl Smith, 45, of St. Charles, was driving a 2005 Ford Expedition north on Route 25, just north of the intersection of Banbury Road, at 9 a.m. when his car spun out of control.

The Expedition crossed into the southbound lane and struck a 2005 Honda Accord, which was driven by Debra Berger, 60, of Batavia. She was taken to Delnor Hospital in Geneva with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The Expedition then veered off the road and flipped onto its roof, Kane County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Pat Gengler said. Smith was pinned in the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire personnel. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gengler said he does not know whether that stretch of Route 25 was icy at the time of the collision, but black ice was present on other Batavia area roads Monday.

St. Charles Tavern Association responds to city’s, police’s bar concerns

arhodebeck@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Steve Baginski, owner of The Beehive Tavern & Grille, understands the value small changes can have in addressing the St. Charles City Council’s concerns about the downtown nightlife.

He and most other downtown bar owners have banded together in recent months to do what they can to reduce over-serving and fights. Acting as the St. Charles Tavern Association, the bar owners have begun using hand stamps to track patrons’ bar-hopping; they have created a banned list for those patrons involved in fights, illegal activity or other disruptive behavior; and, among other actions, they’ve started to lock their doors at the 1:20 a.m. last call.

Although the latter change is small, Baginski said, it prevents the “last-call bar hop.”

The bar owners hope their initiatives will stave off the City Council’s threat of changing closing time from 2 to 1 a.m.

Mayor Don DeWitte proposed the reduction after an August weekend that required police response to several downtown fights involving intoxicated people.

Aldermen are expected to hear an update about the tavern association’s efforts and results this month. While the decision will be the council’s, DeWitte said, he would be inclined to take a wait-and-see approach.

“General feedback has been that the tavern association has made some strides in quelling some of the issues that had created this discussion to begin with, particularly issues related to over-service, altercations and after-hours violations,” DeWitte said.

“While those issues have not been totally eliminated, at this point it appears that they have been reduced significantly, and I think that’s based on the fact that the tavern association has been aggressive in addressing the issues the City Council had raised.”

“We’re as concerned about fights as they are,” Hoffman said.

“We really don’t want any of our patrons to end up in trouble, either,” Stone said.

The tavern association has improved communication between the city and bar owners as well as among themselves, members said. Instead of handling issues independently, they can compare notes and share solutions, modifying when needed.

Hoffman said it seems as though younger patrons have gotten the message to improve their behavior.

“Everybody knows this is the hot topic in St. Charles,” he said. “Everybody settles a little bit.”

Statistics likely won’t be compiled until later this month, Deputy Police Chief

Steve Huffman said. But police are seeing improved adherence to the rules, and the bar owners are cooperating with the police’s recommendations, such as how to prevent and deal with over-serving.

“Overall, we’re pleased with the work of the tavern association,” Huffman said.

DeWitte said he hoped the bars would take action and is glad they have.

With Rookies, Dawn’s Beach Hut, Ray’s Evergreen Tavern, the Filling Station Pub and Grill, Alley 64, Pub 222 and River Rockhouse also as members, the tavern association has nearly 100 percent participation among the downtown establishments.

“Nobody would do what we’ve done, step up the way we have,” Simpson said.

The Office and McNally’s Traditional Irish Pub have elected not to join. DeWitte said those establishments have been running “fairly clean operations” and have not had issues with fights, over-serving and after-hours violations.

they are eager for the negative attention to end.

“It’s not mayhem down here,” Stone said.

Getting blamed for every drunken driver is unfair because there are other places people consume alcohol, they said. Likewise, just because a fight may start outside their establishment doesn’t mean those involved were their patrons. And, they said, there always will be people who believe the rules don’t apply to them.

“We’re all doing every-

thing we can to run a good bar,” Hoffman said. He later added the negative attention has discouraged older, responsible patrons from going out at night.

Instead of feeling like the city’s red-headed stepchildren, association members said, they’d rather be given credit for the positives they bring to the community – such as numerous fundraisers, hundreds of jobs and businesses that help make St. Charles an entertainment and dining destination.

“We make this town a destination point,” Wojcik said.

While bar owners said they close before 2 a.m. on slow nights, they fear a mandated earlier closing time would lessen St. Charles’ appeal to those seeking evening entertainment. For example, a 12:20 a.m. last call would give nighttime moviegoers less time to grab a drink afterward, and that also could drive movie business to communities with later last calls.

Hoffman said it would be unfair to reduce their hours while maintaining the 2 percent liquor tax that was implemented in 2010.

Baginski, who took heat from aldermen during a tavern association update in November, said downtown Main Street has been liquor row for decades. He hopes the recent perception that the bars have an adversarial relationship with the city and police department will fade.

“We’re happy to work with them,” he said.

Geneva Chamber gears up for 2013 It takes me time to get used to a new date, not necessarily a new year.

Residents have attended meetings voicing concerns about the TIF financing, number of townhouses and, among other issues, the amount of traffic the development will generate.

Rogina said the neighbors’ concerns are real, and their opinions should guide decisions. He feared supporting Lexington Club would “create a bruise in the community that would remain a long time.”

Turner focused on fiscal aspects, saying this project won’t be free to the city despite assurances otherwise.

He doubted taxes generated from the development would equal the money spent on street plowing and emergency services.

ST. CHARLES – The legal dispute over an unpaid bill between the city of St. Charles and Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District was resolved.

The St. Charles City Council unanimously approved the settlement between the two parties at its meeting Monday “I’m pleased we were able to resolve it outside the court system,” City Administrator Brian Townsend said. “It’s not all of what we wanted, but it represents, I think, a beneficial agreement for both parties, and we look forward to moving on.”

The fire district provided fire services to its residents by contracting with the St. Charles Fire Department until it opened its own stations in May 2011.

St. Charles sued the fire district in fall 2011 for breach of contract after waiting more than seven months for the district to pay the remaining balance of a one-year, $1.8 million agreement for fire and rescue services. The city alleged the fire district owed $37,500 of the final contract.

The settlement states the fire district will pay the city half of that amount, or $18,750.

Without the settlement, the parties were looking at a lengthy trial that would have started at the end of this month, said Ken Shepro, the fire district’s attorney. He said that would have involved more money, legal fees and time commitment on both sides.

“It seems as if both sides decided it was simply time to move on,” Shepro said.

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles City Council on Monday approved the proposed Lexington Club housing development and related tax increment financing funds in a vote that required a rare tiebreaker decision from Mayor Don DeWitte.

Opponents of the singlefamily home and townhouse project had brought signs to the meeting, but none were given the chance to talk before the vote. And, when the mayor called for public comment, he adjourned the meeting before one resident could make his way to the podium.

Brian LaVolpe spoke anyway, describing the vote as disgraceful.

After the meeting, LaVolpe noted the 7-2 decision the Planning and Development Committee cast in December against the proposed TIF. “We have no idea what changed their votes because nobody spoke but the two al-

“This vote tonight shows it’s really true,” she said.

LaVolpe agreed, noting he helped collect 400 signatures against the project.

“We felt disrespected that they didn’t look at us,” he said. “We did what we were asked to do.”

When he and his wife moved to Dean Street, they were told that those who live on Dean Street generally live there until they die.

“With this development coming,” LaVolpe said, “I don’t know if that’s going to be true any more.”

Health official: Follow three C’s during flu season

arhodebeck@shawmedia.com Tom Schlueter of the Kane County Health Department understands his advice for people during flu season is simple and trite.

But that doesn’t stop him from encouraging people to get a flu shot and follow the three C’s: cover your cough, clean your hands and contain the disease by staying home when you’re sick.

“It can be a challenge, but if we all stayed home when we were sick and didn’t spread the disease, fewer people would be out from work,” Schlueter said.

The need to follow this advice is highlighted by the cases already reported this flu season, Schlueter said. And the incidents of flu are likely higher than the reported numbers because many people don’t seek treatment from a doctor.

According to the health department’s influenza surveillance summary for the week of Dec. 23, 8.94 percent of hospital emergency room visits were for flulike illness, up from about 8.5 percent the week before. Children 4 and younger reportedly accounted for 34 percent of the week’s flu cases, and the 5- to 24-year-old group accounted for 35 percent.

Last year, emergency room surveillance peaked in midMarch at 4.02 percent, according to the health department.

Flu symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, headaches, fatigue and vomiting and diarrhea, although

those symptoms are more common among children than adults.

Adults can infect others a day before symptoms develop and up to a week after becoming sick. Flu viruses are believed to be spread mostly by droplets made when infected people cough, sneeze or talk.

Nationwide, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports incidents of influenzalike illness are nearing past peak levels during moderately severe seasons. It notes 29 states, including Illinois, are reporting high activity.

The CDC reports the number of people seeing their health care provider for influenzalike illness has increased from 2.8 percent to 5.6 percent in four consecutive weeks.

Last season’s relatively mild season peaked at 2.2 percent, according to the agency.

With the season’s peak typically occurring in February and March, people still have time to protect themselves with a flu shot. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become effective, Schlueter said, describing it as the best protection against the flu.

TheCDCrecommendsthose 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine yearly, although exceptions apply.

The health department offers a flu shot indicator map on its website, www.kanehealth.com/flu_shots.htm.

“We always say, ‘It’s never too late to get a flu shot,’ ” Schlueter said.

And, he repeated, follow the three C’s.

“Stop the flu,” he said. “It starts with you.”

BATAVIA – The Batavia City Council is applying for two county grants to fund sidewalk improvements and a river corridor redevelopment plan.

Aldermen Monday approved applying for a $170,000 Kane County Community Development Block Grant to fund about 3,300 feet of sidewalks near the central part of Batavia.

“The erosion not only takes away land, but the soils that are lost damage the river itself,” McGrath said in a memo to al dermen. “We are lucky enough to have a nice section of relatively shallow water which is a great environment for a variety of wildlife not seen elsewhere in the middle of urban areas.”

McGrath said officials also need to plan how the river can be better accessed and used.

Orchestra reaches out to music lovers

BATAVIA – Jim Kendros doesn’t expect everyone who attends one of his talks to suddenly morph into an expert on the musical classics.

But Kendros, a composer, performer and lecturer on period music, believes anyone willing to put in a little time can become an expert listener to music of all sorts.

Saturday, Kendros shared his enthusiasm and knowledge of music, mixed with a hefty dose of humor, with a gathering of about 50 people in the meeting room at Batavia Public Library.

The talk, sponsored by the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, came in advance of the ESO’s inaugural Batavia concert Thursday.

The orchestra, which usually performs in the Hemmens Auditorium in Elgin, is slated to perform Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” along with pieces from Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky, when it takes the stage at 7:30 p.m.

Batavia on Saturday as part of the ESO’s Listening Club feature, which promotes upcoming performances and orchestral music by educating potential consumers of the ESO’s music on the forms, movements, orchestration and other details that enrich performance pieces.

aptitude to appreciate this; you just need a desire to learn,” Kendros said.

He warned those attending Saturday’s talk that the knowledge they amass could lead to unintended consequences.

“From this day forward, you will now be considered by those in your social cir-

cles, by your friends, your family, your associates, as the resident expert on classical music,” said Kendros, drawing laughter from the audience.

Kendros centered his talk on pieces by Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky, drawing attention to programmatic elements in Vivaldi’s work

and the thematic structure of Tchaikovsky’s.

In Vivaldi’s piece, the composer used his four concertos – titled Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter – to provoke imagery in the minds of listeners, using violins to create imagery of wind, singing birds and a murmuring brook, while using other instruments – such as violas and cellos – to evince barking dogs or gentle French bagpipes in the backcountry.

Plucked strings also were used to represent the sounds of a crackling wood fire or snow and icy rain splashing against windows.

Kendros’ talk also included demonstrations of antique techniques for handling orchestral instruments.

Wendy Evans, manager of outreach and education for the ESO, said the ESO concert and talks are intended to reach out to Tri-Cities residents.

Should the concert prove successful, the ESO may look at Batavia as a site for regular appearances.

“There are a lot of music lovers down here, and the [Batavia Fine Arts Centre] is a beautiful facility,” Evans said.

Geneva teachers union leader: Complaint to be dropped

bschory@shawmedia.com GENEVA – Although the teachers union president said its unfair labor practice complaint against Geneva School District 304 would be withdrawn, no paperwork to dismiss it officially has been filed, officials said.

The Geneva Education Association had accused the school board of trying to intimidate teachers during this fall’s contentious contract talks.

Last month, the district filed its own unfair labor practice against the teachers union. The district charged the union had bargained in bad faith because its attorneys agreed to drop the charge if a contract was ratified – and

Young said the complaint would be dropped – but reluctantly.

“We did drop the unfair labor practice,” Young’s email states. “We needed to do this due to statements made by the [Illinois Education Association] attorney to the board’s attorney.”

School board President

Mark Grosso said he could not comment about the unfair labor practice complaint because the issue has not been discussed by the board.

“We have nothing formal,” Grosso said. “We just had email exchanges among attorneys.”

and the district’s unfair labor practice complaints at the next meeting, 7 p.m. Monday at Coultrap, 1113 Peyton St. Young’s email stated the teachers union was “not happy” to drop the complaint.

“The bigger issue is the respect and trust that has been damaged in the relationship between the Geneva School Board and the teachers by the board’s actions during negotiations,” Young said in her email. “A great deal of work needs to be done to mend this relationship and, unfortunately, the teachers have seen very little indication that the board is interested or willing to do that.”

Grosso said he could not comment about Young’s assertions.

At last, an effort to calculate economic value of art BLOOMBERG NEWS It is easy to think of art as a luxury. It enriches our minds and lives, and it allows us to express ourselves to the fullest, yet it is not essential to brute survival.

We value it, but beyond all measure. Art is priceless.

Perhaps these are reasons that assessments of economic activity often simply overlook the art world.

Consider, though, a few cold calculations.

Americans spend about $14.5 billion a year on the performing arts alone – everything from opera, dance and symphony concerts to circuses, magic acts and Las Vegas shows – a 2011 study by the National Endowment

for the Arts found.

And according to data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis, a branch of the Commerce Department, the performing arts – together with museums and sports activities (the bureau has traditionally grouped these into one sector) – contributed $70.9 billion to the U.S. gross domestic product in 2009. In that same year, the motion picture and soundrecording industries added $59.8 billion, and publishing contributed $147.7 billion.

In other words, art does have a dollar value – it’s just one that analysts haven’t fully added up. So, it is welcome news that the bureau will now measure the creative sector’s spe-

cific effects on the macroeconomy.

Thanks to a new partnership with the National Endowment, bureau researchers will make hard measurements of how much artistic and cultural activities contribute to GDP. Drawing from all good sources of data, governmental and private, BEA researchers will assess the number of people working in the performing arts, at museums, in book publishing, at architectural firms – every nook of the creative world. They will dig into the details on how much each part of the art world is growing or contracting, and how they all contribute to the economies of individual

states.

For instance, a preliminary study has found that performing arts contribute more value to states with large and diverse economies than to smaller states. In California, Colorado, Georgia, Texas and New Jersey, every additional dollar generated by the performingarts industry adds $1.25 or more to gross state product.

In Wyoming and South Dakota, in contrast, each dollar contributes only about 86 cents. That’s because in the less populated states, many things need to be imported from elsewhere – lighting, sound equipment, scenery, curtains – for the show to go on.

Even if the effect is

greater in more populous places, artistic efforts consistently stimulate the local economy.

This lends some evidence to the discussion about whether innovation and new ideas can contribute to economic growth at least as much as the investment of additional capital does. Such debates will be enriched by the new and better data to come.

No doubt economists and scholars of all kinds will find many other ways to puzzle over the numbers as they come in.

It’s safe to assume that, in general, the hard data will demonstrate that art is a bigger economic player than we thought.

Bellock said that if the federal government eventually reduces Medicaid reimbursement rates, Illinois will be stuck with billions of dollars in health care costs it can’t afford.

Hamos says she does not trust the federal government, either, but the Supreme Court has given states a clear answer about future “what ifs.”

“I think if this was just left to the feds … we would be just as cautious as you are,” Hamos said. “But the United States Supreme Court has laid out the basic tenants. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has said they cannot impose this on the states.”

State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, D-Chicago, says there is simply too much available cash to not open Illinois’ Medicaid rolls.

“We are already spending this money. This is just a cost shift, and finally getting a match,” Feignholtz said as she shepherded the Medicaid expansion plan through an Illinois House committee.

Illinois first approved a Medicaid expansion moratorium in 2011, and then again in 2012. Hamos’ requested expansion would end that moratorium.

The new proposal faces a tight deadline. If the Illinois Legislature fails to approve the proposal by noon Wednesday, it could be summer before lawmakers take up the issue.

Hamos says Illinois is finally trying to get ahead of the problem.

“This is going to take a while to get right,” Hamos said “So we need this expansion now.”

SPRINGFIELD – Not even the authors of Illinois’ latest pension reform proposal are in love with the idea.

State Rep. Elaine Nekritz, D-Northbrook, says the plan to tweak cost-of-living adjustments and increase employee contributions is “not an ideal solution.” State Rep. Dan Biss, D-Evanston, said the reform package is “not perfect,” but he pleaded with lawmakers to find some way to “support this legislation.”

The public-employee unions that don’t want Illinois legislators to overhaul the pension system don’t like the plan.

Illinois Federation of Teachers’ chief Dan Montgomery accused lawmakers of “plunging ahead with an illegal plan that, from our point of view, violates your oath of office.”

Illinois AFSCME boss Henry Bayer told lawmakers they are trying to take away what

has been “earned and is owed” to public employees.

But with time quickly running out in the lame-duck session, the less-than-perfect pension proposal is headed for a vote today in the Illinois House. Lawmakers have until noon Wednesday, when a new Legislature is sworn-in, to send a pension reform proposal to Gov. Pat Quinn.

The latest plan would freeze COLAs for all workers and retirees for six years.

Once reinstated, they would apply only to the first $25,000 of a retirees’ income, and workers would have to wait until age 67 to receive a COLA bump. Public workers would also be required to pay more for their retirement benefits.

But the plan does not include a cost shift that would have local schools and governments pick up more of the cost.

Illinois’ largest public employee unions – the Illinois Federation of Teachers, the Illinois Education Association, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal

Employees and the Service Employees International Union – are warning lawmakers that any reform to which the unions do not agree would be met with a lawsuit. The Illinois Constitution specifically protects public pensions.

Instead of benefit reductions, the unions want lawmakers to raise taxes on corporations to pay for Illinois’ $93 billion to $130 billion pension gap.

“We don’t have a benefit problem,” Cinda Klickna of the IEA said. “We have a revenue problem.”

Illinois’ pension woes go back years and can be partially blamed on lawmakers and governors who did not make the state’s full pension payment.

But House GOP Leader Tom Cross, R-Oswego, said the time for finger-pointing has ended.

“Many of the people … that are going to complain about this solution didn’t mind when the General Assembly didn’t make payments” Cross said.

SPRINGFIELD – The federal government is promising billions if Illinois expands its Medicaid program, but lawmakers are wary.

Illinois Health Care and Family Services Director Julie Hamos told a Statehouse committee Monday that Illinois could see more than $1 billion a year in reimbursements from the federal government by expanding Medicaid to cover childless adults who make about $15,000 or less a year.

These are the same people targeted for coverage by the Affordable Care Act. The money, Hamos said, “will go right back out to the (health care) providers and local governments who have been providing care for lowincome adults.”

Hamos said about one million people in the state don’t have health insurance. She estimates 520,000 of those people would become eligible for Medicaid under an expansion, and the rest would have to buy private health insurance through the state’s insurance exchange.

The federal government is promising to pay 100 percent of the costs for anyone covered by a Medicaid expansion from 2014 to 2017, and no less than 90 percent of the costs from 2017 until 2020.

But state Rep. Patti Bellock, R-Westmont, said there is no guarantee Illinois will see all of those promised dollars once President Obama leaves office.

“What happens in the outer years?” Bellock asked Monday.

“Will that be changed to maybe a 65 percent rate? I don’t know what will happen those years.”

Bellock also has questions about Illinois’ expectations that only a half million people will enroll into an expanded Medicaid program.

Unusual combo clicks for Derain Derain, Saints gaining momentum toward UEC River title

kdruley@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – St. Charles East sophomore Keone Derain has a Hawaiian first name but is of Filipino descent. It’s certainly not his least symmetrical combination.

Derain golfs in the fall and wrestles in the winter, forever seeking pins for the Saints.

Derain admits he could be more keen on the name’s meaning. While he knows it’s just an online search or a book flip away, he’d rather use his mitts for grappling, which is evident after an 18-4 start.

“I like to be really aggressive and hand-fight, but at the same time I still like to be really offensive and keep attacking,” Derain said. “Really offensive and technical is what I’ve always been striving for.”

That’s “offensive” as in assertive, not obnoxious.

You’d expect no different from someone with “God is the one who blesses us” attached to his name.

From the beginning of workouts, practice partners Ramon Lopez and Brad Kearbey noticed the 145-pound Derain always was pushing.

Lopez (152) and Kearbey (160) compete at heavier weight classes than their teammate, and that’s not always a built-in advantage.

After shuttling in and out of the varsity lineup as a freshman, Derain committed to making sure he had a permanent spot this season.

His record – blemished only against traditional state tournament contenders – speaks for itself. The Saints pipe up for Derain, too.

“I don’t know what he does, exactly, differently,” said Kearbey, a senior. “He’s pretty hard for me to take down.

There’s just something about the way he wrestles.”

With no influence on the planning of the offseason itinerary, the former state champion simply “came in and was handed what was there.”

Along with proven veterans such as Ryan Rubino (113) and Isaiah Vela (132), Potter also took stock of his emerging or almost-there talent. Turns out he logged the most mat time with Derain, who followed his father – former Glenbard North wrestler Romualdo – into the sport at an early age.

You can learn a lot about someone just from locking horns for a few days. It didn’t take long for Potter to discover Derain as “a pleasant surprise.”

“When I was able to start

getting on the mat with him I realized, ‘Hey, he’s kind of got a knack’ and I really like his attitude,” Potter said. “He can show stuff for me and do that, but his competitiveness is really what I think I like the best about him. He’s in-yourface and he’s going to come at you. I think in the past, his problem has been his lack of confidence. The good news is he’s just barely starting to get the confidence.”

Derain said he could feel a breakthrough approaching early, beginning with his runner-up finish at the Conant Cougar Classic during the season’s first weekend.

Conant senior Mitch Alexander eventually caught Derain in a low single-leg takedown late in the championship bout to secure an 11-9 victory. After that, Derain only resolved to put the match in his memory bank for a possible postseason meeting.

With the rest of the Saints – who can clinch an unbeaten run to the Upstate Eight Conference River Division title with a victory at Streamwood Friday – he has excelled in

league duals. Over the weekend, Derain joined Anthony Rubino (106), Peter Banks (220), Ryan Rubino, Vela and Lopez as individual champions at the Glenbard West Invitational.

“I’ve kind of always had the drive,” Derain said. “I’ve just got to keep working hard and getting better.”

Armed with the same approach in golf, Derain has competed for the varsity in each of his first two seasons.

He established career bests in both nine and 18 holes in 2012 with a respective 35 and 73 at Peoria’s Weaver Ridge Golf Club.

Teammates often joke with Derain about his unique double dip, but the mood’s far less light once the conversation reaches the mat room.

Could be the benefits of the “mental challenges” Derain derives from both sports.

“It’s not your normal mix, and I kind of laughed about that in the beginning myself,” Potter said. “Like, ‘Come on, you can’t be tough and be a golfer.’ But he’s proved that that’s not true.”

Whether her latest clientele sports swim caps or not, Tracy Ribeiro knows this much about her weekend handiwork: “You’re not going to be able to miss it,” she said. “Not when it’s bleached.”

Working alongside ME Salon owner Mary Ericcson on Saturday, Ribeiro, a stylist at the St. Charles shop, aided the St. Charles East boys swim team in the first stage of its ritual makeover for next month’s IHSA postseason.

Equal parts solidarity and serendipity – bleached blonde hair bears the closest resemblance to gold medals, after all – the bleaching measure is one shared by several teams.

Still, there can be some novelty attached, at least until the Saints shave their heads in a few weeks.

“It’s just funny to see a bunch of boys coming to get their hair done,” Ribeiro said.

Ribeiro, whose son, Gehrig, is a former East swimmer and water polo player, said about 40 Saints visited the salon.

The initial plan called for waves of 10 athletes at a time.

Instead, the pack largely walked in at once.

Stylists deal in volume all the time, so the surprise wasn’t much of one, all things considered. Neither was the process.

“For bleaching, you mix the bleach, put it on their hair, let it sit for 20 minutes, let them have the hair get past orange and go to blonde,” Ribeiro said. “Some-

St. Charles East senior Kendall Stephens says he didn’t need a doctor to tell him what he already knew.

As last week unfolded with no progress to his beleaguered right shoulder, he and his family sensed that, this time, there would be no playing through the injury.

“I didn’t go to the doctor at all, I just knew my body,” Stephens said after Saturday night’s Saints win against Evanston. “It was hurting and it didn’t feel right. I gave it four or five days of rest and it didn’t change so I knew that I needed to have surgery.”

Stephens, a Purdue-bound shooting guard, played the first month-plus of the season despite suffering a torn labrum during preseason practice. He aggravated the injury Dec. 27 while trying to strip the ball away from a Stevenson player during a Proviso West Holiday Tournament game.

“It’s totally the worst motion you could possibly do for this injury,” Stephens said. “I was pulling back, tried to swipe it, and that’s when I hurt it.”

Stephens said he plans to have the procedure done through Fox Valley Orthopedics on Jan. 22. The expected recovery time of about six months would put Stephens in position to jump into preseason workouts leading up to his freshman season at Purdue.

East coach Pat Woods said Saturday that he still considers Stephens out “indefinitely, because until he has the actual surgery, who knows what’s going to happen the next couple weeks.”

But assuming there is no change of plans, Stephens – who was averaging about 18 points a game for the Saints this season – has played his last game for East, dealing a major blow to a program that is in the midst of one of its most promising seasons in years.

“No regrets,” Stephens said. “I think I had a great time playing for this first half of the season. It was great. Now I’ve got to go into manager mode, assistant coach mode. It is what it is, but I’m happy it played out the way it did.”

Woods said he was unsure where Stephens’ career points total landed with the Saints. A four year-varsity player, Stephens played his first two years under former Saints coach Brian Clodi.

“It’s been great,” Stephens said. “I’m glad I went to this high school. I met a lot of great people, a lot of great coaches with Coach Clodi and Coach Woods. I’m happy with where my career has been been at high school and I’m happy with where I’m about to head.”

broken wrist, but the three-year varsity point guard hasn’t been immune to the need to shake off some rust.

“Getting back in practice before we played, that kind of helped me a little bit, but until you really get into the games ... it probably took a couple games,” David said. “And then, everything’s kind of the same. You’re just kind of playing.”

David missed the season’s first six games before returning to lead the Knights to a comeback win Dec. 14 at DeKalb.

The Knights went 2-4 without David and are 6-2 since he returned.

“I feel like without Drew, we were missing a big part of our team, someone who can bring the ball up, and he’s been doing that since he was a freshman,” Kaneland forward John Pruett said. “I feel like now that we’ve got him back, we’re pretty good now.”

OK, it was mostly sweet to see the Saints’ little point guard give one of the best performances you’ll see anywhere in the Land of Lincoln this hoops season. The kid’s got a bright, bright future.

But it was also bitter in the sense that it showed just how dangerous this East team could have been come March with a healthy Kendall Stephens. With

Stephens, Washington, Adduci and Gentry, you have four kids playing at a very high level, and if the Saints get one of their bigs on a roll, they had a chance to be an extremely difficult out. Teams like that don’t often come around these parts. As it stands, it might take more heroics along the lines of what Gentry provided Saturday for East to reach its big goals this season.

East coach Pat Woods said there were multiple options for Gentry after receiving the final inbounds pass, but he expected the sophomore would have a decent opportunity to uncork a potential winner because the Wildkits figured to focus on East junior guard Dom Adduci, a more established scoring threat.

“When you’re having a night like [Gentry] did, the basket’s the size of the ocean, and everything you throw up is going in,” Woods said.

The Wildkits (7-9) led, 53-48, with 6:24 to play in the fourth quarter after a four-point possession that included a technical foul on Saints junior forward A.J. Washington.

But a corner 3 from Gentry and a pair of Gentry free throws allowed East (10-4) to tie the game at 53 with 2:50 to go.

Gentry again made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 55, with 1:15 left, and he then poked the ball away on defense to teammate Ben Skoog to give the Saints the ball

with the chance to take the lead.

After a Saints timeout with 48 seconds left, Gentry beat his man and zoomed in for a reverse layup to put the Saints ahead, 57-55, with 37 seconds remaining.

It was then Evanston’s turn to tie the game as Wildkits junior Jackson Mihevc drew a foul on Washington and made both free throws for a 57-all tie with 10.5 seconds to go.

After East moved the ball across halfcourt, Woods called timeout with 5 seconds left, setting up Gentry’s 3-pointer that was foreshadowed by the sophomore drilling a trio of 3s in the first quarter.

In addition to his six 3s, Gentry converted all six of his free throws on the night and made 3 of his 4 two-point attempts.

Evanston coach Mike Ellis said he was aware of the danger Gentry posed long before his hot start Saturday.

“There was a sense he was going to be a problem a month ago when I came and scouted them and told our kids [No. 44]

is a point guard,” Ellis said.

“Our kids were well aware of who he is. They’ve known for a month that I think he’s one of the best point guards in the state.”

Although Woods played 12 guys on the night, all 60 of the Saints’ points came from the starting lineup. Adduci scored 13 points and Washington had 10 points and nine rebounds. “[Saturday] it was Cole, I think [today against Glenbard West] it will be someone else,” Woods said. “We’re going to see, I think, a lot of different people step up throughout the rest of the season to kind of fill the absence and for us to move forward as a team.”

On Saturday, Gentry gave a performance that won’t soon be forgotten by anyone in the gym.

That includes Stephens, who confirmed after the game he is planning a Jan. 22 surgery to fix his torn right labrum.

“That was amazing,” Stephens said. “He played his [butt] off.”

ST. CHARLES – The St. Charles East boys basketball program needed a reason to smile.

Cole Gentry gave the Saints and their fans much more than a smile. The 5-foot-9, 145-pound sophomore incited bedlam Saturday night when his buzzer-beating 3-pointer capped a stirring individual performance in the Saints’ 6057 win against Evanston.

One day after word spread that East star Kendall Stephens plans to have seasonending surgery this month, Gentry served notice that the program’s upward trajectory will not come to a screeching halt in Stephens’ absence. His game-winner, which came out of a timeout with 5 seconds remaining, gave him an improbable 30-point night.

Gentry canned all six of his 3-pointers on the night and, perhaps most remarkably, scored all 15 of East’s points in the fourth quarter.

Regarding the final shot,

Gentry said “If you’re confident, you know you’re going to make that shot if you get it. That’s just how I went into that situation.

“I just figured, Kendall’s not here, why not me. Somebody’s got to step up, why not myself. I knocked it down. It was a good feeling.”

Judging by the scene that unfolded, it was a lot better than good.

When his relatively clean look from near the top of the key dropped, Gentry sprinted to the opposite end of the floor, where he was mobbed by teammates and other euphoric members of the student body.

Gentry, who started Saturday but has come off the bench much of the season, is mostly known for his ballhandling and distributing prowess at this stage of his varsity career. His previous scoring high on the season was 12 points.

“It was a pretty big jump,” Gentry said. “I think it’s the most I’ve ever scored. Once it got going, I didn’t want to

ST. CHARLES – The Geneva girls basketball team fired a lot of shots from virtually pointblank range Saturday afternoon and withstood a deadly long-range aerial attack by St. Charles North to win an Upstate Eight Conference River league battle, 61-49.

The Vikings (10-8, 4-2 UEC River) had little trouble getting the ball into the low post to 6-foot senior Sami Pawlak (21 points, 14 rebounds) and 6-foot sophomore Abby Novak (16 points, six rebounds).

“We thought we’d have some mismatches,” Geneva coach Sarah Meadows said.

“Sami is a strong post player.

She can catch and go right to the basket. She did a nice job with that [Saturday].”

The Vikings also took advantage of the size of 6-foot point guard Sidney Santos, posting her up at times. Santos also did a nice job running the offense, particularly in the final eight minutes, when she scored eight of her 14 points to help Geneva pull away from a 41-41 tie at the start of the fourth quarter.

“I am starting to get more comfortable and everyone on the team is starting to get more comfortable with their roles,” Santos said. “This half of the season, we’re ready to show that, yeah, we’ve had our ups and downs, but Geneva’s nothing to sleep on.”

Pawlak scored the first eight points of the game for the Vikings as they rolled to an early 12-2 lead. A driving bas-

ket by Santos put Geneva up 24-10 with five minutes left in the second quarter, but that’s when sophomore Sam Novak began almost single-handedly bringing the North Stars (5-13, 2-4) back into the game.

Sam Novak, a 5-5 guard, came off the bench to score 20 points. She connected on four 3-pointers in the first half, including one two seconds before the halftime buzzer that pulled

North to within 29-24.

“She’s had a pretty strong winter,” North coach Colleen Backer said. “She had a strong tournament at Dundee-Crown, too. She’s really been working a lot on her defense – a ton.

She’s a good shooter. She’s a scorer. She’s always been a scorer, but she’s working really hard on her defense to get her there on the floor.”

That’s not to say Sam No-

vak has been neglecting her offensive skills.

“I came in early to shoot, which I like to do before games,” she said. “[Saturday], Geneva, it’s a big game, so I just thought that I really wanted to have a lot of confidence going in and just really turn it up. When our team is down, I feel they need me coming off the bench, so I just do my best.”

Sam Novak hit a 3 from the right wing early in the third quarter to tie the game at 29.

The Vikings went back up by six when Santos put back one of her seven rebounds, but a 3 from Alex Silverman and a pair of free throws by Sam Novak tied the game again at the end of the quarter.

“They were so hot,” Meadows said of the North Stars.

“We gave up six [3s] to [Novak] and at least three to [Silverman]. Defensively, we’ve got to get better. We put in a new zone and we’ve just got to work on it a little more. It’ll get there.”

The Vikings also re-instituted their diamond full-court press for part of the game, which Meadows and Santos agreed gave the team a spark.

Knights sweep Burlington Central in doubleheader

sports@daily-chronicle.com MAPLE PARK – Kaneland basketball teams used accurate free-throw shooting and overpowering defense to sweep Burlington Central during Pack the Place Night on Saturday.

The girls team connected on 31-of-39 free throws to defeat the Rockets, 56–53, in overtime.

The boys’ team outlasted Burlington, 38-30. Both boys teams managed a total of six baskets in the second half of the game.

“It was ugly,” admitted Kaneland boys coach Brian Johnson. “ I like our defensive effort [Saturday] and that’s the

best defense I’ve seen [Burlington] play. I think we should feel real lucky we came away with a win [Saturday night].”

The girls game could have been called “Free Throw Fest” as the Rockets (14-3) also took frequent trips to the free-throw line, scoring on 25 of 33 attempts.

“We’re not the biggest team, so we have got to be aggressive on offense and one of the ways we measure that is how many times we get to the free-throw line,” said Kaneland girls coach Ernie Colombe. “So going to it 39 times [Saturday] shows a change from last night. We had a tough loss and only got two free-throw attempts.’

Kaneland’s Emma Bradford (12 points) was fouled while attempting a shot with 27.9 seconds left in regulation. She converted both free throws to give the Knights (10-6) a 44-42 lead.

On the Rockets’ next possession, Alison Colby was fouled with 7.4 seconds to go. She connected on her two free throws to tie the game.

The Knights were unable to get a shot off before time expired.

Kaneland scored 10 of its 12 overtime points from the freethrow line, with Sarah Grams sinking six of them. Her first two at the start of overtime put the Knights back in front, 46-44.

Her last four cemented the win.

“Pressure is what you put on yourself, so I just looked at it as any other free throw,” Grams said.

The senior guard scored 10 points on the night, all from the

charity stripe. Ashley Prost also scored 10 points.

In contrast, the Kaneland boys (8-6) made only one free throw in the first half as both teams struggled on the offensive side.

The Edwardian period of furniture design falls in the years between Victorian and Art Deco. It is named for King Edward VII of England, who reigned from 1901 to 1910.

Some experts say it is not just the years that the furniture was made but also the design that makes it Edwardian. Some claim influences from earlier periods and say that a combination of Georgian, Victorian and Art Nouveau created the new Edwardian style. Collectors have to rely on appearance, since it is so difficult to know exactly when a chair was made. Designers working after 1901 created a chair that looked lighter in weight than a Victorian chair and used pastels rather than dark colors. Fabrics and wallpaper with flowers became popular. Chairs had scrolled backs and legs, similar to Art Nouveau designs but thinner and less “tangled.” Bamboo and wicker were introduced, and many pieces were made of lightweight wood and mother-of-pearl inlay.

Seats were made with thin padding and thin fitted cushions. It has not been a popular style with collectors, but it’s enjoyed by decorators and homeowners. Today both period and reproduction pieces are a good buy. Most are made of solid wood, not plywood, and use upholstery fabrics of damask, silk or other natural materials, not modern synthetics. A 1910 Edwardian settee sold for $344 at a Doyle New York auction this year. Chairs sell for a few hundred dollars. Sofas go for less than $500 at auction. *** Q: My friend who gave me her old upright piano also gave me the antique piano shawl she always draped over the piano. It’s 52 inches

square and appears to be black silk crepe. It’s reversible and covered in embroidered pink roses. The fringe around the whole shawl is 15 inches long, with smocking around the edge of the fabric. Is the shawl valuable?

A: Many piano shawls like yours were made in Spain in the 1890s.

They sell for $50 to $100 if they’re in very good condition, with full fringe and without holes. *** Q: My mother-in-law gave me one of her old alligator purses. It’s in great shape and has a label inside that reads “Rosenfeld.” Have you heard of that maker? How old is the purse?

A: Harry Rosenfeld was an American designer active from the 1930s into the ‘70s. His designs were made by several different manufacturers. The bags were sold at high-end department stores and at Harry Rosenfeld Handbags, a shop on Madison Avenue in New York City. Rosenfeld designed bags in all sorts of styles, using all kinds of materials. But it is likely that your alligator purse dates from the 1930s, ‘40s or ‘50s, when alligator bags were at the peak of their popularity. The value of your bag depends not only on designer and condition, but also on style. It could sell for less than $100 or more than $300. *** Q: My dad owned a funeral home in Cincinnati and liked collecting antiques. He left me his collection of paperweights made by Crane & Breed, a Cincinnati coffin manufacturer. The paperweights include an Egyptian sarcophagus, Scottie dog, alligator, camel, frog, turtle, bear, sailboat and ghost. I don’t want to sell them, but I’d like to know how old they are and what

A: Crane & Breed took over a Cincinnati coffin-manufacturing business in 1854 and stayed in business until 1973. The company held several patents on coffins and coffin parts, and sold coffins to funeral homes in several states.

Today collectors know about Crane & Breed mainly because of its collectible paperweights. From the late 1800s into the early 1900s, the company gave away promotional bronze novelty paperweights to funeral homes and their employees.

Today, the sarcophagus paperweight sells for close to $400, but most of the others are going for less than $20.

A: Your plate was made as a memorial to President James A. Garfield, who was assassinated in 1881. The center picture is a bust of Garfield. The pattern is called “Garfield Drape,” but it’s sometimes called “Canadian Drape.” It has been attributed to Adams & Co. of Pittsburgh, but more recent research suggests that it may have been made by Burlington Glass Works of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Perhaps that’s how it got the name “Canadian Drape.” The pattern was first made in the 1870s. After Garfield died, memorial plates in that pattern were made with his bust in the middle.

The only connection to Vermont is that Vice President Chester A. Arthur, who became president after Garfield’s death, was born in Vermont. Different versions of your plate were made. Some include the words “Born Nov 19, 1831, Shot July 2, 1881, Died Sep 19, 1881.”

The Readers’ Writers: Ellen Marie Wiseman chooses heavy historical period for debut novel

Unfortunately, her life after the war has been extraordinarily hard, too. But she’s really proud of me for getting my novel published, and it makes me beyond happy to bring some joy into her life.

GateHouse News Service Ellen Marie Wiseman didn’t exactly choose a light period of history for her first novel, “The Plum Tree.”

In fact, I was a bit cautious when I saw a portion of the story takes place in the Nazi killing factory of Dachau.

The inspirations for “The Plum Tree” are the real-life experiences of Wiseman’s mother and grandfather, German citizens who had been caught up in events not of their making or support and just tried to survive while millions around them died. Suddenly, Wiseman’s novel took on a life beyond the pages.

“The Plum Tree” is a romantic suspense tale set against the backdrop of World War II Germany and the nightmare of the Nazis.

The author isn’t afraid to grapple the horror of the period, and yet, the story itself is one of courage and promise as we follow Christine Bolz, a young German working for a wealthy Jewish family.

The son, Isaac Bauerman, opens her eyes to a world of music, literature, and the magical beauty of love. This is the compelling story of Christine’s journey from innocence, to awareness, and, ultimately, to a voice that refuses to be silenced.

Wiseman has captured the terror-ridden experiences of the era and interwoven a very believable love story through a combination of superb prose, attention to detail, and memorable characters. DK: Will your next book stay in the historical genre, or will you switch gears?

EW: I love history, so

I think my novels will always have a touch of the past.

Right now I’m working on a story that goes back and forth in time, from the mid 1990s to the late 1920s.

I think fiction that incorporates history is a great way to ask ourselves how we would have reacted under challenging conditions, be it WWII or the Great Depression.

Ellen Wiseman: Once I dis-

covered my love of writing, I started daydreaming about being published. But making up stories was more of a hobby, a luxury I afforded myself whenever I had time.

Then the idea for “The Plum Tree” came to me, and I knew it was the novel I had to write.

From the very first paragraph, my intention

was to try to get it published.

I felt like it was a story that needed to be told. Thankfully, my dream came true.

DA: How did your mother react when you told her you were writing a book inspired, in part, by her life?

EW: She was surprised

because she doesn’t think she’s that interesting. But once I started asking more questions, I think she started to recognize how extraordinary her experiences were. When she read “The Plum Tree,” she said it was overwhelming, like reliving everything. I think it made her realize how strong she

honored to have “The Plum Tree” out in the world, and I hope everyone enjoys reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

I know there are millions of books to choose from, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for picking mine.

I hope “The Plum Tree” will remind everyone that although at times it may seem as though fate conspires to break us, our only true destiny is that which we create for ourselves.

Also, one of the best parts of this journey is hearing from readers, so please write. I’d love to hear from you.

Curvature of penis not likely to disappear over time Dear Doctor K: A few months ago, I noticed that my penis had developed a bend in it. It hurts when I have sex, and it’s embarrassing. Is there a treatment?

Dear Reader: What you describe sounds to me like Peyronie’s disease. This condition causes a curvature of the penis. It can also cause pain with erection, and it may interfere with sexual function. The pain often is more of a problem at the beginning of the condition than later. Even if the bend in the penis remains, the pain often resolves.

In Peyronie’s disease, inflammation and scar tissue form along the shaft of the penis. No one is certain why this occurs. It may be triggered by repeated mild trauma during sexual intercourse.

In some men it goes away, but in most it doesn’t. However, when it remains, it doesn’t always interfere with sex or cause other symptoms. It just looks funny.

People with Peyronie’s disease may have genes that cause them to form scar tissue more readily.

They are more likely than other people to also suffer from a condition called Dupuytren’s contracture, in which scar tissue builds up in the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff You may feel the inflammation and scar tissue as a painful lump or area of unusual firmness. In many men, the scar tissue is not evenly distributed throughout the shaft of the penis.

If it is more on one side, as it usually is, the scar tugs on the shaft, causing the penis to bend or shorten. This is because it prevents the penis from expanding normally. Men with Peyronie’s often have difficulty achieving a firm erection.

Treatment is available for cases that cause pain and interfere with sexual function. The best results have come from oral pentoxifylline and injections into the scar tissue with one of three drugs: verapamil, interferon alpha-2b and collagenase.

Pentoxifylline acts on the immune system to quiet inflammation and the associated formation of scar tissue. Other options include carnitine and vitamin E (sometimes with colchicine), taken by mouth. But these therapies are not usually effective

in men with moderate to severe curvature.

High-intensity ultrasound and radiation therapy have been tried, but there is no strong evidence of their effectiveness.

Corrective surgery may be an option if your symptoms are very bothersome or disfiguring and persist for more than one year. In a typical procedure, the inflamed or scarred portion of tissue is removed from the penis and replaced with a graft taken from another part of the body.

This surgery often works well.

However, mild curvature of the penis may remain. In addition, sexual function or shortening of the penis may not improve following surgery.

For this reason, surgeons sometimes implant a penile prosthesis during surgery. In some men, a prosthesis alone is enough to straighten the curvature and improve sexual function. If you decide to consider surgery, be sure to discuss all options with your doctor.

Dr. Wallace: Our grandson lost his life in California because of a fatal disease – drugs.

He was a kind and gentle young man, but, unfortunately, he took the wrong path in life. He thought that he would start a new life out West.

He kept in touch with his family through letters and phone calls. But, unfortunately, he couldn’t conquer his addiction. He was in rehab several times and was lined up for his first rehab in California.

I guess he decided to have one last fling, and it cost him his life. He entered a drugstore and demanded drugs.

The owner shot him four times, and he dropped dead on the floor.

This was the path he chose, and his family knew that this terrible day was a possibility, but it doesn’t make it any easier to lose him. He was loved by all in his big family.

I still hurt so much from his death. Today in church, I tried to hum during a hymn, but it just brought tears. I just don’t feel like singing yet.

Please use my letter to warn teens of the evils of drug addiction and tell them that it all starts with trying drugs for the very first time. – Grandmother, Whiting, Ind. Dear Grandmother:

Dr. Wallace: My two best friends were busted for shoplifting.

I guess they went on a “shopping spree,” but didn’t have any money.

I know they have stolen things from the mall before, but they never got caught. I’ve been with them when they ripped off stuff, but, luckily, I was out with my boyfriend when they got nabbed.

These two girls and I have been good friends ever since elementary school.

Now my parents are telling me I can’t hang around with them anymore. I don’t think that’s fair. They didn’t rob a bank or commit murder.

All they did was swipe a few things from a company that makes millions of dollars by overcharging customers for their stuff.

What can I do to get my parents to realize that they overreacted?

You don’t have to rob banks or be a murderer to be a bad influence.

Stealing is a crime.

Dear Abby: My husband and I are on an extremely tight budget since I lost my job and he was forced to retire early because of health issues. We have a nice home (paid for) and older vehicles, and we have no complaints about our lifestyle other than being more penny-conscious to cover our basic expenses.

We receive numerous wedding invitations from our grown children’s friends, whom we have known and loved since they were all in high school together. Our problem is what to do about a gift for them when we don’t have the money for one. We love to attend the weddings and receptions, but I feel bad about not taking a gift.

That will leave the door open for them to invite you to come anyway. However, if they don’t, send a card extending your good wishes.

Dear Abby: My husband, “Arthur,” and I are planning a trip. One stop will be to see some friends of his, “Mac” and “Annie,” from years back. I am dreading the visit.

Last year, Arthur had a heart attack. I called some of our closest friends to let them know he was in the hospital. One couple knew Mac and Annie and told them about his illness.

Mac and Annie then called me and yelled at me for “allowing” my husband to get ill. I hung up, but they called back when I was at the hospital and left another hate-filled message on our answering machine. Not wanting Arthur to get upset, I erased it and never told him.

As I mentioned yesterday, defenders should identify their target, the tricks that they need to defeat the contract. Then they should pull the trigger – play the necessary cards.

In this deal, how should West have defended against three spades? He led the heart ace: three, nine, five. He continued with the heart king: six, four, seven. What should he have shot next?

South’s jump to three spades was game-invitational, guaranteeing at least a six-card suit.

Since East had played highlow in hearts, West knew that South had begun with three hearts. So, West could see four tricks: one spade and three hearts. But where was the fifth winner?

If West shifted to his club, took the next trick with the spade ace, and gave his partner a heart ruff, perhaps he could receive a club ruff in return. However, from the bidding East could not have two spades.

Instead, West had to gain a trick with the diamond king. But if South had the diamond ace and queen, East had to lead the suit.

How could West get East on lead?

Right – he led his heart jack (not the two, which East might have read as a suit-preference signal for clubs, indicating that West was void in that suit). East, thinking that South still had the heart queen, ruffed. And when South played a low heart, East correctly understood his partner’s play. East shifted to the diamond jack – down one.
