AURORA – Marmion Academy, 1000 Butterfield Road, Aurora, will host its annual Veterans Day Observance Ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Alumni Hall gymnasium.

The Marmion JROTC Cadet Corps will honor all veterans, especially deceased alumni veterans of war, during the after-school formation and parade.

The public is welcome to attend.

Marmion’s fishing team to host annual fish fry drive-thru event

AURORA – Marmion Academy’s Fishing Team will host its drive-thru-only annual Fish Fry Fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 18.

Each meal includes three pieces of Sgt. Dotson’s famous fried catfish, french fries, hush puppies, cole slaw and a dinner roll. Each meal costs $12, and all proceeds will benefit Marmion’s fishing team. Meals must be purchased beforehand at marmion.org/fishfry.

BATAVIA – Batavia High School students will blend comedy and drama in “The Dining Room” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4 and 5, with a preview the evening before. The theater production will be performed in the Batavia Fine Arts Centre, whose manager, Dominic Cattero, directs the play.

“The Dining Room” was written by A.R. Gurney, and examines the culture of upper-middle-class Americans across generations by spanning the early 1930s to late 1980s through the bonds and breakages of 18 families, according to a news release.

Gurney creates a patchwork of interrelated scenes, some funny and some touching. The play is set in the dining room of a well-to-do home, a place not only for daily meals and special occasions, but for bonding, education and discipline.

BATAVIA – Here we go again. Another Batavia alderman is resigning, meaning that there will be a brief appointment to fill a City Council seat until the April 4 election.

Mayor Jeff Schielke said during an Oct. 25 committee meeting that 3rd Ward Alderman Kyle Hohmann is planning to move out of his ward and will submit a letter of resignation in time for the Nov. 7 council meeting.

Hohmann was not present at the committee meeting and could not be immediately reached for comment.

He already had announced he would not be a candidate for re-election to his council seat.

The Oct. 25 meeting was the first for new 1st Ward Alderman Scott Salvati, who was appointed to replace Carl Fischer, who moved to California. Now the council will use the same process that it used to appoint Salvati.

Although Schielke technically can make the appointment and then seek council confirmation, he uses a system in which aldermen conduct interviews with applicants in public, and then vote among themselves before the mayor announces the appointment.

Third Ward resident Elliot Meitzler, who has been attending city meetings and already was planning on running for the aldermanic seat in the spring, said he will apply for the appointment.

The 3rd Ward covers the northwest side of the city east of Randall Road. It includes the Braeburn, Carriage Crest and Crestview Meadows subdivisions, the Mill Street town houses and The Holmstad retirement community.

BATAVIA – The first thing that intrigues people about PechaKucha is figuring out how to say it.

The man who introduced the concept to Batavia, Batavia Public Library director George Scheetz, says “Petchaa Koo-chaa” is the correct way to pronounce what translates to chitchat.

PechaKucha is a presentation format created by a couple of architects in Tokyo to keep business talks brief. Every individual’s presentation consists of 20 slides, each shown for 20 seconds, for a total of 6 minutes and 40 seconds.

The slides are on auto-forward, so the presenter has to keep moving.

But what started as a way to keep their colleagues’ presentations short has expanded into informal, fun gatherings of people sharing ideas, works, thoughts and things that matter to them.

Thanks to Scheetz, Batavia has joined 900 cities around the world that have a PechaKucha chapter. He said he was introduced to the concept on a visit to Champaign, and fell in love with it.

“My first thought was we need this in Batavia,” he said.

Scheetz, together with Ken Mandat, guitarist and music instructor at Hix Bros Music, and with the help of numerous volunteers, founded the Batavia chapter a year ago. They held two sessions dubbed volumes at Riverview Banquets before they outgrew the facility, expanding from 128 people in the beginning to an average of about 200 currently. The Nov. 10 gathering again will be at the Batavia VFW’s Island View Banquets.

Members of the community sign up to speak, for a total of eight or nine presentations in an evening. There is a mandatory “beer break” halfway through the talks, which encourages interaction between the presenters and among the people in the audience.

“There’s so much energy in the room,” Scheetz said.

He said he has been amazed at how well the concept has resonated with people in the community. There is music and food during the break, and he said that people really seem inclined to talk with one another.

“It makes for a fun night,” Scheetz said.

He said that people from all walks of life volunteer to speak, including artists, business people, directors of nonprofit groups, as well as retired people.

Most people speak about what they’re passionate about.

NORTH AURORA – Three Aurora men now charged with felony theft were caught after police observed them in the act, North Aurora Deputy Police Chief Scott Buziecki stated in an email.

It was 10:15 a.m.

Oct. 30 when police in an unmarked car observed a gray pickup truck pull behind Arthur a closed business in Braaksma the 200 block of Poplar Place, the email stated.

As police watched, two of the men jumped a fence, took large sheets of metal and slid them under the fence where the third man John loaded them into their Braaksma pickup truck, Buziecki’s email stated.

The men then drove away from the business – and police promptly stopped them.

After a subsequent i n v e s t i g a t i o n , a l l John Parsons three were linked to similar thefts also in the 200 block of Poplar Place on Oct. 2, Buziecki’s email stated.

Each was charged with felony theft, police announced in a news release. They were held in North Aurora Jail until an Oct. 31 bond hearing, the email stated.

Those charged were: • Arthur D. Braaksma, 45, of the 1100 block of Watson Street, Aurora, whose bail was set at $15,000, requiring $1,500 or 10 percent bond to be released.

• John D. Braaksma, 48, of the 1000 block of South Union, Aurora, whose bail was set at $15,000, requiring $1,500 or 10 percent bond to be released.

• John C. Parsons, 52, of the 900 block of Loucks Street, Aurora, whose bail was set at $10,000, requiring $1,000 or 10 percent bond to be released.

If convicted, the felony theft charge is punishable by two to five years in prison and fines of up to $25,000.

As of the afternoon of Oct. 31, all three were held in Kane County jail and scheduled to appear in court Nov. 10.

The Sky music store owner Steve Warrenfeltz to talk about music. Instead, Warrenfeltz talked about what it was like to grow up as an “Army brat,” with both of his parents serving in the U.S. Army. He and his family constantly moved to different places, including overseas, and friends were always coming and going. He said it wasn’t easy.

Warrenfeltz said he loved the experience of participating in PechaKucha. He said that with people of diverse backgrounds giving the talks, he learned so much and had so many revelations.

“It brings different people together, sort of like a cultural exchange,” he said. “I learned things about people that I never knew.”

He is excited about the possibilities that these exchanges could bring about, and sees PechaKucha as a way to bring communities closer together.

Other presentations that stand out for Scheetz include a father who talked about adopting two of his children, and a woman who spoke about her family’s experiences in a Japanese internment camp.

Batavia resident and architect Steve Vasilion will be one of the presenters for the Nov. 10 volume. Vasilion has lived in Batavia for 20 years. He and his wife, Laura, have a blended family of five adult children. His presentation will be about things he holds dear.

Steve Vasilion’s mother died in July of this year. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and nine days later she was gone. He said that before her diagnosis, she had been incredibly healthy and vibrant. Her passing was a shock.

He said his talk will touch on his mom and the impact her death has had on him.

The evening’s master of ceremonies will be radio personality Scott Mackay of The River. Food will be offered by Pal Joey’s and Batavia Popcorn Depot, and beverages by the hall. For information as well as recordings of previous presentations, visit pechakucha.org/ cities/batavia.

“Just to let them know that our grandpa was in the war, and we’re doing it because he passed away … and we wanted to let them know that they are not forgotten and we really appreciate it,” she said.

Heather said the cavity-free duo will give away all the candy they’ve collected for the care packages, and the siblings are determined to meet their goal, adding, “Both my kids have big hearts.”

In talking about the candy drive, she said her daughter told her: “‘Mom, I just want to make one person smile.’”

The Operation Gratitude website at operationgratitude.com/operation-gratitude states it sends care packages filled with food, entertainment, personal care and handmade items, plus letters of appreciation to veterans, first responders, new recruits, wounded heroes, their caregivers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home.

BATAVIA – Two children who miss their grandfather, a Vietnam veteran who lived with them during his last illness, found a sweet way to pay tribute to him and to active and former members of the military and their families.

Overlapping the Halloween season, they set up a collection box near their home’s driveway, where a 20-foot inflatable black cat marked the spot for donors to drop off wrapped candy and gum through Nov. 2.

They planned to ship the items Nov. 3 to Operation Gratitude, which sends out care packages.

They designed their own fliers and started ringing doorbells in their surrounding neighborhoods to spread the word.

“A girl just came and dropped off 10 pounds [of candy] because of the flier,” Abby Anderson said in a phone interview. “It’s really nice.

Abby said they hope to collect 50 pounds of candy through their project.

Stoffel named fire lieutenant; Robinson joins police department

editorial@kcchronicle.com BATAVIA – The Batavia fire and police departments made personnel moves that were recognized with swearing-in ceremonies before the Batavia City Council on Oct. 17.

Firefighter Greg Stoffel was promoted to lieutenant, filling a vacancy created by a retirement.

Stoffel has served the Batavia department since 1997. He is a certified Firefighter III, fire ground officer and emergency medical technician.

The fire department has 23 full-time firefighters and 27 paid on-call firefighters.

Austin Robinson was hired as a police officer. He is a graduate of Marmion Academy and Western Illinois University, and has worked security at Presence Mercy Medical Center

in Aurora.

The Batavia Police Department has about 40 sworn officers.

Both Stoffel and Robinson were sworn in before aldermen at the council’s regular meeting, with Mayor Jeff Schielke Greg Stoffel administering the oaths.

Water Street unveils commissioned works

rtomell@shawmedia.com BATAVIA – The long-awaited unveiling of collaborative works by two artists commissioned by Batavia Enterprises took place this fall at Water Street Studios.

A crowd gathered to hear Kerri Ann Hoskins Branson and Christopher Cudworth explain the inspiration behind the paintings that are now part of a permanent collection.

Their art graces the newly restored hallway for an east entrance to Water Street Studios off the more convenient parking lot, all part of a project spurred

by Austin Dempsey, vice president of Batavia Enterprises and a founder of the Batavia Arts Council.

“I’m proud to be part of the Water Street Studios experience,” Dempsey said, calling his company’s readapted building a special piece of history.

“We’re fortunate to have this colony of [high-caliber] artists here.”

BATAVIA – The Batavia United Way annually organizes a Day of Caring to help senior citizens in Batavia rake their leaves.

This year’s event will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 6, and will help both seniors and people with disabilities.

The group is looking for lawns to rake, as well as groups, businesses and community members who would like to help. Yards will be raked only, and volunteers will not do mowing, weed pulling nor window washing.

Branson and Cudworth, resident artists at Water Street, were commissioned to create a set of solo paintings reflecting the atmosphere and history of Batavia and its historic buildings.

Branson’s work hangs in brick alcoves inside the hallway. Her paintings feature highly textured surfaces created using liquid metals that react with one another during her painting process. It’s just one of the mediums for the former model and stuntwoman, most recognized for her portrayal of Sonya Blade in the “Mortal Kombat” video game, according to her artist biography.

Cudworth created a series of six

Batavia-focused paintings around the topics of nature, history, commerce, community, progress and the arts, each depicting its own narrative in a loving homage to the community.

To recognize the Dempsey family’s support of Water Street Studios, the main gallery will be named in their honor, and a naming ceremony fundraiser is planned at 5 p.m. Nov. 11 at which people will be encouraged to become a Guardian of the Gallery.
