GENEVA BOUTIQUE OWNERS SHARE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE JORI & JUNE

T

wo women walking independently along their own paths eventually came together with a common interest.

Melissa Parkos and Juliet Polonus, owners of Jori & June boutique in Geneva, met while trick-or-treating with their kids. The two moms “gravitated toward each other,” says Parkos.

“I say that is when I developed my girl crush on her,” Parkos says with a smile.

Parkos had a treasured upbringing with inspiring and supportive parents. She spent her childhood in Minneapolis before climbing the corporate ladder in marketing and supply chain management – a journey that allowed her to

live in Shanghai, Istanbul and Mexico City before pausing for motherhood in Florida. Eventually her journey brought her back to the Midwest, but – this time – to Geneva.

She itched to work again, and it was that drive that immediately bonded her with the bohemian and creative spirit of Polonus.

Polonus is a self-proclaimed free-spirit with a solid background in retail, which ultimately led her to a job at Anthropologie in the Geneva Commons. It was while she was working at Anthropologie that she decided to start her own graphic T-shirt business, Behöva. That independence gave her the confidence to take the next step in her career – to open her own boutique.

Jori & June opened this summer, in the space once occupied by C’est La Vie by Sylvie. The store features women’s clothing and accessories that are “practical, comfortable, unique and affordable,” according to the boutique’s website.

The shop’s name, Jori & June, has quite a story, as well.

The “Jo” in Jori was inspired by Parkos’ mentor and stepfather, John – a sergeant in the Marines, who was killed by a suicide bomber in Baghdad.

The “ri” in Jori comes from the name of her son, Richard (her first pregnancy), who was a stillborn at 8 months old.

“Both were significant to me and represented the ‘past and the memories,’” she says.

The duo further explained that the Jori element in the store is expressed as, “more simple, chic and basic,” says Parkos, who seeks items that are universal and plain, but can be dressed up with accessories.

The “June” comes from the letters in her sons’ names, Parkos says. “They are the future – our hope.”

The “June” part of the store represents the freespirited woman.

“She will not shy away from patterns or colors; she sometimes is a little more daring and has a little bit of an ‘edgy’ side,” Parkos says.

fit ATHLETIC ATTIRE MEETS STYLE AT GYM CHIC

Owning a business has always been Nicki Turnbull’s goal, but – at the ripe age of 24 – the Geneva high school graduate has already checked that off her list.

Her athletic leisurewear shop, Gym Chic, officially opened on June 4 at 151 S. First St. in St. Charles.

Getting to opening day was an adventure within itself. The Wheaton resident wasn’t exactly sure what kind of business she wanted to own, but after attending Northern Illinois University to study communications and spending a few years in the sales industry, she had some ideas.

With an athletic background, Turnbull eventually realized that she wanted to be involved in the fitness and health world in some way. Since her aunt had previously owned a boutique in Wheaton, Turnbull realized the potential in opening a clothing shop, but didn’t have a particular interest solely in women’s clothing.

The shop currently carries around 25 brands, all of which are handpicked by Turnbull. She finds most of the brands online or by visiting trade shows, and she even took a trip out to L.A. to further her knowledge of the industry.

“It’s the Mecca of athletic clothing design,” she says. “ I went to designer houses where everything is created, and got to see clothes designed on paper to actual production. It was so cool for someone who has no background and experience in textiles.”

Not only does Gym Chic carry clothing, but also – recently – the shop started offering yoga classes hosted by Geneva’s Prana Yoga Center. Classes take place once a month and cost $10 each. Turnbull notes that if yoga participants pay to attend a class and end up buying something in the shop that evening, the $10 class fee will be credited to the purchase.

That’s when she made the connection.

“It is really fun,” Turnbull says. “We wanted to make more of a community environment. The classes get ladies in the store who have never heard of us.”

“I realized there was nothing in our area convenient to anyone interested in small niche athletic clothing,” Turnbull says.

Turnbull is in the store six days a week and runs everything on her own, but she is planning on hiring an associate in the spring.

She set out to open her own shop and enlisted the help of her parents.

“I feel like it’s similar to a lot of small businesses,” Turnbull says. “I do every single side of the business, from accounting to marketing and charitable donations. Everything has been something that I’ve taken on as a project.”

“You really don’t realize how much you don’t know,” Turnbull says. “I tried to use as many resources as I could. My dad is an optometrist and my mom is in medical sales, so both know business, but they’ve never opened a business before.”

It took some time, but eventually, Turnbull got the ball rolling.

“It was a lot of information to digest and a lot of trial and error,” Turnbull says. “Honestly, a part of me really likes it. I see it as a challenge.”

The shop has transformed into a hub for athletes and anyone interested in the latest yoga and athletic wear trends.

“Athletic clothing is at the height of its popularity,” Turnbull says. “It’s called ‘athleisure,’ which is the idea of the clothing you can put on after you go to yoga –more of a lifestyle clothing – but it’s still athletic performance fabric.”

Turnbull acknowledges that starting a business has been quite an adventure, but so far, so good.

“It’s a lot of work, but I really like it, and it allows me to learn the business from the ground up,” she says. “I have the knowledge now, and I can build off that.”

SEEKER OF JUSTICE As a public servant, Jody Gleason protects the rights of others

or 24 years, Jody Gleason has fought crime, sought to protect the rights of crime victims and has helped bring justice to the community as a part of the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

“We have challenging work, but it is very rewarding work,” Gleason says.

Gleason is an advocate for the rule of law and has been called a tenacious trial lawyer. She is the first assistant state’s attorney and a leader in the office, says Joe McMahon, Kane County State’s Attorney.

“She is an integral part of the effectiveness and strength of success to this office,” McMahon says. “She’s willing to roll up her sleeves and lead by way of example.”

Gleason’s uncle, who worked as a judge, inspired her to enter the field of law, she says. Gleason grew up in the small town of Elwin, located in central Illinois, and attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale for her undergraduate studies. For law school, she attended DePaul University in Chicago, which, Gleason says, was a big difference for a girl who had 47 people in her high school graduating class.

During law school, she was an intern at the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and, after graduation, she interviewed for a position with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

that helps younger attorneys by providing advice, counsel and support. The camaraderie of the state’s attorney’s office has been one of the best aspects of the work, Gleason says.

“Everyone will jump in and help everyone else out,” Gleason says. “Everyone is always willing to step up and help out, and that is really something.”

Gleason is a true example, McMahon says.

She stands up for those who cannot or are unable to stand up for themselves and takes on complex cases in pursuit of a just outcome.

“She is an extremely talented trial lawyer,” McMahon says.

Along with building a successful law career, Gleason and her husband have raised three sons and make a point of being active in the community. During her free time, she enjoys running, and has competed in a half-marathon in Naperville and the Chicago Marathon.

Gleason dedicated her fundraising efforts to Equine Dreams, a Sandwich-based nonprofit program that provides free therapeutic horseback rides for children and adults with disabilities.

With two of their children grown and the youngest finishing high school, for the last two years, Gleason and her husband have taken up another hobby – sailing. It has been a great experience, she says.

This month, we continue the tradition with Kane County Magazine’s Women of Distinction class of 2016.

We’re introducing our honorees in this issue, paying tribute to them at an event Oct. 26, and – in each month that follows – we will tell the complete story of every of these outstanding local residents.

As the cultural arts coordinator for the Geneva Park District’s Playhouse 38 Theatre, Pivaronas has helped to create the ultimate theater experience.

Playhouse 38 stages six to eight productions a year, and Pivaronas has developed an ensemble of dedicated actors who seek out the opportunity to return to the theater in order to work with her. In addition to stage productions, Playhouse 38 hosts workshops for students of all ages.

In her role, Pivaronas, of Bartlett, serves as director and educator, working with an ensemble of actors and backstage crews in costume, sound, music and set production.

She has an ability to make thoughtful connections with cast members and put those around her at ease.

With Pivaronas’ work, the young theater company has quickly become an important addition to the Fox Valley arts scene.

Recently, Playhouse 38 moved into a new, larger space, located at 321 Stevens St., Suite P, in Geneva.

Earlier this year, Geneva resident Tiffany Cornell took longtime dreams of starting her own company and made them a reality.

In February, she launched PTC Logistics, LLC – a third-party brokerage firm that moves goods across the country. In starting PTC, Cornell saw the business venture as an opportunity to align management of staff and operations with her vision for a company.

Despite facing obstacles and challenges, Cornell has worked hard to create her own company and has earned the respect of her peers.

In a few short months, Cornell and her small staff have worked hard, placing the company on the road to success, as projected sales are in good shape for the company’s first year, Cornell says. Beyond the sales figures, she helps her employees grow while also providing mentorship.

For Cornell, success is a mark of hard work and determination, as she has achieved goals at an age when many are still navigating through the early years of their careers.

In addition to running a successful business, Cornell is the mother of three young children.

Before joining the Geneva Park District in 2013, Pivaronas served for several years directing theater productions for the Bartlett Park District. She garnered theater experience working backstage at Willow Creek Church, where she helped prep performers during large production numbers and honed her managing skills.

EVALUATION SOLUTIONS, INC. Rise Jones, of Elgin, is the co-founder and executive director of Hamilton Wings, a nonprofit designed to address the needs of socially and or academically challenged youth and their families. The organization was started in 1996, and it uses the arts to promote self-awareness, self expression and leadership. Through Hamilton Wings, Jones has designed curriculum for schools and built community partnerships.

Her impact on education is just one dimension of her work in the community.

Jones has a doctorate in public policy analysis and her research focuses on areas of youth development, public health and work with underserved communities.

During her career, Jones has contributed to several programs, sharing her expertise and experience.

Whether she’s working as a consultant or performing research, Jones – who once served as trustee of the Elgin Community College board – is sought out for her ability to collaborate with others, and evaluate and develop solutions. She has coordinated a series of community forums, such as the Create, Innovate and Ignite series and summit, which uses creativity to bring awareness to community issues.

The person who nominated Jones as one of the Women of Distinction, used the words insightful, energetic and creative when describing her, and also said that she has the ability to bring out those qualities in others.

Additionally, Pivaronas is a skilled photographer, avid gardener and enjoys painting, remove, as well.

In 2002, Dr. Sarah Kimber of Geneva took leave from paid work and began working as a volunteer at Tri-City Health Partnership, where she serves as a physician to lowincome patients who are uninsured or underinsured. Ten years ago, Kimber’s dedication to the clinic and her patients led to her being appointed the clinic’s medical director. Over the years, with the clinic as a volunteer physician and as a volunteer medical director, Kimber has provided exceptional care. She shares her time and medical skills with those struggling in the community “Compassionate care has resulted in lives saved and health restored to the many in need in Kane County,” wrote the person who nominated Kimber as one of this year’s Women of Distinction.

Through leadership, Kimber sets a high standard for the more than 100 medical professionals volunteering at the clinic, and she believes that everyone has the right to quality health care.

Many in the community will recognize Diane Anderson for her work as a Realtor, helping her clients find and sell their homes.

Anderson has garnered recognition as a top agent in Batavia and in the Fox Valley, too.

But looking beyond her resume, one will see that her passion for making a difference in the community runs much deeper.

From the time her children were young, Anderson, a North Aurora resident, would volunteer for their school activities.

She lent her time to various groups, such as the Batavia Mothers’ Club Foundation, the Louise White parent/teacher organization and the Batavia High School sports boosters.

Over the years, Anderson’s volunteer work branched out when she started the Batavia Bunco for Breast Cancer fundraising event.

Anderson also has organized several fundraisers for CHIP IN Batavia and, just over a year ago, she joined the Batavia Woman’s Club, helping out with its largest fundraising event – a fashion show.

Considered “amazing, smart and dedicated,” by her nominator, Anderson continues to balance her work in the community, role as Realtor and involvement in her family-owned business – Dimark Construction – which provides home remodeling, design and construction work.

Outside of the clinic, Kimber devotes time to the community and the great outdoors.

She is a Kane County Certified Naturalist and enjoys leading indoor and outdoor education classes. She has led nature hikes and taught science-related programs, as well.

GAYLE BOWLING INSPIRATION SENIOR SHARED LIVING

Gayle Bowling of St. Charles had taken her own parents through the health care system and found herself wanting something more – a health care option that looked different.

It would take several years and plans before she would embark on a journey that led to her providing seniors with another option for care and housing.

Bowling created Inspirations Senior Shared Living, which includes two, private, houselike residences where as many as eight senior adults can live together and mix 24-hour care and assistance – as needed – with daily living. The staff manages the basics, such as cooking, cleaning and laundry. The residents consist of those who are independent and those who are in need of round-the-clock care. Physicians make home visits to care for the residents, rather than leaving the residents and their families to worry about transportation to doctors’ offices.

She finds fulfillment in being able to provide care and services, and is very “hands-on,” often spending time listening to residents share the stories of their lives. Her mission is to create a safe, home-like setting for the residents and provide companionship through communal living, rather than a more institutional setting.

Born and raised in St. Charles, Bowling and her husband raised their own family in St. Charles, as well. Many of the residents that Bowling cares for are people she has known throughout her life.

BATAVIA FOUNDATION FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE As an educator in Batavia School District 101, Nan Phillips was one of those people who always went above and beyond her responsibilities. Whether she was serving as the student council director or working as the school’s learning resource director, Phillips, who also resides in Batavia, was the person who knew every student’s name and always found a way to do more, which included seeking grants, helping the Parent Teacher Organization and organizing fundraisers.

After seeing reports that boys needed more encouragement to read, she developed a club called Boys, Books and Bologna to encourage students in third to fifth grade to read more. She initiated family read night at schools, and several other programs to encourage students to discover a greater love of learning.

When she retired from the school district, she didn’t go far. Soon she joined the Batavia Foundation for Educational Excellence, where she coordinated a grant committee and helped organize fundraisers. She was a key member behind the foundation’s Hall of Honor – a celebration of exemplary alumni and friends of Batavia Public School District.

When it comes to making a difference in the community, Melinda Kintz has – time and again – shown her commitment by utilizing her vast supply of energy and creativity.

For the last two years, Kintz of Batavia, has worked as the executive director of Batavia United Way. Before taking the position, she had served in several other organizations as a volunteer, leader and organizer.

She started Success By 6, a United Way program that supports families in need of financial assistance to send children to all-day kindergarten. She also has helped with the annual adopt-a-family programs, which support families in need during the holidays; and she has dedicated countless hours to CHIP IN Batavia, which supports underprivileged residents.

Kintz has been a leader with LivingWell Cancer Resource Center, ReStore and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Her positive attitude and persistence inspires those around her to work harder. When it comes to a project or a need in the community, Kintz goes beyond the basics in order to find ways to incorporate more people, business support and donations.

KRYSIA TSCHEREWIK KRYSSAGE WELLNESS

As a small business owner, there is an unending list of work to be done. Yet, Krysia Tscherewik finds ways to go beyond business as usual to aid in community affairs by sharing her knowledge of wellness.

Tscherewik is the owner of Kryssage Wellness, which provides clients with massage therapy, as well as other wellness services, including mental health.

After operating a business in Geneva for several years, she expanded into a larger facility in the St. Charles historic district. She is committed to her staff, has a strong work ethic and is dedicated to providing the best possible care.

Tscherewik, a West Chicago resident, often steps outside of her work to provide wellness in the community by teaching workshops to expecting mothers at a local hospital.

Her work has made an impact on the lives of countless individuals.

In the community, she donates her time and energy to other local groups, including the Batavia Woman’s Club and CHIP IN Batavia – a community group dedicated to helping support those in need in the community.

A career as a teacher, and her dedication to making local schools and the community a better place, has not only resulted in positive change in the community, but she also has inspired others to join her in the effort.

CREEKWOOD ASSOCIATES For the last 17 years, Kristen Kauke has provided clinical social work to youth and families in Kane County through her work in schools, as well as through her private practice. But that is just a part of the story.

Kauke wanted to extend her reach of wellness. She returned to the classroom to become a registered yoga teacher and enjoys teaching teens and adults the art of mindfulness. This summer, she brought her yoga classes to the residents of a youth detention center.

Kauke led the efforts in creating the St. Charles Regional Effort of the Campaign to Change Direction organization, which seeks to help increase education and awareness of mental health issues and teach others the signs of emotional suffering.

Kauke has impacted the lives of young adults in the community in other ways, too. She has served on the St. Charles Youth Commission for several years, and has worked as a Sunday school teacher and confirmation mentor at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She has donated her time and knowledge by serving on local mental health committees, and she also speaks about wellness at local and national events.

As an artist, Lynn Caldwell has hand-woven many beautiful pieces of apparel and marbled silk to display in art galleries and shows.

But some would say that her masterpiece isn’t something that can be placed on display or worn. For the last 10 years, as executive director for Fine Line Creative Arts Center in her hometown of St. Charles, she has increased programming, created new community partnerships and instituted opportunities for Kane county residents to discover their own inner artist.

Caldwell leads the Fine Lines outreach efforts, engaging residents in classes, gallery exhibits and events. From high school trips to company team building programs, Fine Lines has become a destination in St. Charles. Under her leadership, staff members have created free Fine Line Original Fridays, featuring artist trunk shows and live music.

There also is Fine Line Exploration Day, where visitors can take “mini,” introductory classes and experiment with different media.

As executive director, Caldwell has initiated and managed large changes and forged new partnerships with local organizations, such as the St. Charles Park District. Caldwell continues to teach classes and still makes time for her own art. She brings people together and shares a passion for the arts and artists.

ANNA BONICK

MIDWEST LABRADOR RETRIEVER RESCUE In some ways, Anna Bonick is a dog-human matchmaker. She helps people find a canine companion by offering help with the search, the adoption process, the training and more.

Bonick is a volunteer with Midwest Labrador Retriever Rescue and a former member of the group’s board of directors. As a volunteer, she performs an array of tasks and uses her skills and talents all along the way.

She takes wonderful photos of the Midwest Labrador Retriever Rescue dogs, which helps them to get noticed; she is active with social media to spread the work about available dogs; and she lends support to families as they train and settle into a new life pattern with their new companions.

Additionally, the Batavia resident has worked on fundraisers and even made television appearances with local news media to spread the word about dog adoption.

She also is a dog foster parent. And, when animals require medical assistance, she works hard to find solutions to benefit the dogs and provide the best care possible. Her persistence and dedication has served as an inspiration to those around her.

ANNUAL WALK MAKES STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER

Heather Ingo-Nutile was a busy mom and cheerleading coach when she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Triple Negative breast cancer at the age of 32.

“My family was in shock because I lived a very healthy lifestyle, but Triple Negative is genetic, and has nothing to do with lifestyle,” Ingo-Nutile says of the aggressive and deadly cancer. In a state of shock, the Elgin resident says she was grateful for the help from the American Cancer Society.

“They were the first to reach out, both to console me and let me know what resources were available,” she says.

Though her prognosis wasn’t good, Ingo-Nutile survived. Now 46, she’s following through on a promise she made during treatment to help others who are coping with life-threatening illnesses.

One way she’ll do that is through The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of Fox Valley on Sunday, Oct. 16, at East Side Sports Complex, 3565 Legacy Blvd., St. Charles. Proceeds from the walk will benefit the American Cancer Society’s support of breast cancer research, education and patient services.

The three-mile, non-competitive walk will follow portions of the walking path through the adjacent park.

“People can go all three miles, just one mile or none at all; that’s perfectly fine,” says Abby Weber, community manager for The Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of Fox Valley.

Onsite registration begins at 8 a.m.; the walk begins at 9 a.m.; and the closing ceremony begins at 10:15 a.m.

Throughout the morning, there will be special, family-oriented events, such as performances by a local dance group, singers, visits from Disney princesses, pink ribbon face tattoos, a photo booth and bounce house.

“We know how much kids love those,” says Weber.

Last year’s walk raised $98,000, and this year’s fundraising goal is $102,000.

As of Sept. 6, there were 115 participants registered, and more than $21,400 had been raised. Walkers can sign up individually, or as part of a team. Some teams are organized through community groups and workplaces, but “the majority of teams are in support of someone www.kcchronicle.com/magazine

The walk used to take place in St. Charles’ Pottawatomie Park, but it outgrew the site, Weber says. East Side Sports Complex will provide ample parking, more room for event tents and the wide flat path is accessible for participants of all ages.

While most of the fundraising walkers are teens and adults, day-of participants range in age from young children to seniors.

CANCER SCARE THE HOLISTIC APPROACH TO BREAST HEALTH

O

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Traditionally, it’s a time of year when we are asked to focus our attention on the rising incidence of breast cancer and the benefits of screening and early detection.

To me, as a holistic physician and healer, this poses a dilemma.

The campaign is meant to offer support for and sensitivity to women, but it also may engender fear. It is thought that there is little we can do to prevent breast cancer, so early screening is our best defense. If we diagnose breast cancer in its earliest stages, we assume we can save lives. However, several prominent breast cancer specialists around the country are raising questions about how to detect and treat breast cancer.

In “Why Doctors Are Rethinking Breast-Cancer Treatment” – a Time Magazine article published in October 2015 – Dr. Laura Esserman, coleader of the Breast Oncology Program at the University of California, San Francisco, stated that early detection of low-grade breast cancer has not resulted in a reduction of the death rate.

According to the article, early cancers are not likely to progress or may even regress.

Also, the majority of fatal breast cancers are not detected on routine mammograms, according to Dr. Shelley Hwang, chief of breast surgery at the Duke Cancer Institute. These thought leaders

are advocating new research to help determine better ways to screen for aggressive cancer, and ways to reduce any over-screening or overtreating of indolent cancer.

So, what do we do? I suggest that we make this October Breast Health Awareness Month, and look at the things we can do to prevent and clear breast cancers and pre-cancers. First, let’s unwind the fear, and then take positive steps toward breast health.

Thermography is a painless, non-radiation screening technique that can detect physiological changes in human beings, and could detect “activity” in the breast three to eight years before a mammogram. Starting

a breast care routine and monitoring with thermography can provide a proactive and positive approach to breast health.

First, they’ll ask you the “big three”: What is your lifestyle? What are your house conditions? And what is your budget? run-of-the-mill big box stores.

“We try to have things that nobody else has,” Kathleen says. “We like to feature products that have value in both price and quality.”

Another lifestyle consideration is the furniture. If you favor pieces with floral designs or distinctive patterns, a neutral floor may suit you best, she says. If your furniture is more neutral, however, let your flooring be your statement piece, whether it’s hardwood in wide-width planks or a textured hook-and-weave carpet.

House conditions may narrow your flooring selection further.

If you have recurrent water or moisture issues, you’ll want to steer clear of hardwood and laminate, Rick says. Wood expands and contracts when it comes in contact with water, eventually buckling or producing gaps between planks.

Instead, tile or vinyl is your best bet for any room with moisture concerns, as those products won’t be affected by water, Rick says. Loose lay vinyl, in particular – which isn’t glued down or held

Luckily, if your heart is set on a wood floor look, there are newer luxury vinyl and porcelain tile lines that offer products that look just like wood, but without the drawbacks of the natural product.

Finally, the budget will largely determine what type of floor you purchase.

With the cost of installation included, tile floors from Tri-State can average around $15 a square foot, though some products cost more or less, Rick says. Solid hardwood floors average about $10 a square foot; laminate averages $7 a square foot; and vinyl comes in around $6 a square foot.

“There’s many ways to get the look you want with materials that will suit your purpose and last,” Kathleen says.

BEST BRANDS FOR EACH FLOORING TYPE Carpet may be the first word in Tri-State’s business description, but it is by far the only floor covering product the company offers.

In fact, it’s no longer the top flooring choice, Kathleen says. Ten years ago, 70 percent of Tri-State’s jobs were installing carpet; now, it’s 50/50 between carpet and other choices.

Customers are trending toward hard surfaces, such as tile and wood.

With that said, Tri-State has some of the best carpet selections available, including Karastan, a high-end brand that allows only a select number of showrooms to sell its product, Rick says.

Hardwood floors are always a popular choice, though board widths and materials vary with individual styles.

Classic hardwood floors usually come in 2 ½- to 3 ¼-inch boards, while wider widths – think 7 ½ to 9-inch boards – are trending, says Rick.

Similarly, hand-scraped boards fit well with the popular barnwood, rustic design theme, while smooth, shiny finishes better fit traditional homes, Kathleen says.

One of newest hardwood options comes from luxury brand Bella Cera, which offers randomwidth, solid hardwood flooring that is handscraped and hand-stained in Tennessee. It’s comparably priced to similar options, and many clients appreciate that it’s made in the U.S., Rick says.

Another trendy flooring choice is bamboo – technically a compressed grass product, not a hardwood – that has become extremely popular due to its hardness.

Tri-State carries Cali Bamboo Flooring, which claims to offer the hardest floors in the industry.

“It’s definitely trendy, but it has staying power,” Rick says. “It’s a renewable resource and the hardness of it … is off the scale … . And it’s pretty low cost compared to hardwood. It’s probably 30 percent less than traditional solid hardwood.”

Laminate is another hardwood alternative. The

scratch-resistant, engineered product is great for families with dogs or cats that easily can scratch hardwood surfaces.

Adding new, inexpensive flooring can increase the value – and visual appeal – of your property, often resulting in a faster, higher sale price.

Luxury vinyl doesn’t have to be a last resort option for those with moisture issues. Today’s printing technology has made vinyl unbelievably realistic, making it one of the fastest-growing segments in the industry, the Lenhardts say.

Tri-State recently worked with a family whose house sat on the market for nearly a year. After they installed new carpeting, however, the house sold in seven days.

Tri-State carries Karndean, which not only offers luxury vinyl tiles and planks but also leads the industry with an array of design strips, which can make a vinyl floor look like a custom tile or hardwood floor.

“It makes a really powerful impression and will help you sell your home,” Kathleen says of a flooring upgrade.

Tri-State also offers vinyl infused with COREtec technology. Old, traditional vinyl couldn’t be installed over uneven surfaces because any sharp edges would puncture through the thin material, Rick says. COREtec products, however, have a cork underlayment that allows them to be installed over imperfect floors, making them a viable option for many clientele.

Finally, large-format tiles are becoming more popular. While older homes often have 1-inch hexagon tiles, or penny tiles, customers now prefer larger tiles because there are less grout lines to clean, Kathleen says.

While travertine and porcelain tiles are great options for those craving natural, beautiful floors, understand that the installation is timeconsuming, Kathleen says.

Whatever your choice, know that the update will be worth it, she says.

“Floors make a big statement in any room,” she says.

Autumn splendor GIVING YOUR GARDEN A FANTASTIC, FALL SPRUCE-UP with MEAGAN PROVENCHER

A

s a mom, I count down the minutes until school starts (for obvious reasons).

But, while the kids are at school, I also have a bit more free time to work in my sorely neglected garden, and I enjoy sprucing it up for the fall season.

As Illinois residents, we are blessed to have four fabulous seasons. And – although each season may seem quite short – we actually have many more weeks of beautiful weather ahead of us to enjoy the outdoors.

Unfortunately, the neglect of my garden, as I

previously mentioned, has taken its toll. But, alas, I can save the garden and make it look fantastic for fall.

There are long-term and short-term fixes for sprucing up the garden. If you don’t have the time to rip out all of the overgrown mess, then just add some punches of color. If you have avoided your front door all summer because the Arborvitae have taken over, then let’s get drastic; if your landscape bones look good and you just need some fresh color, then let’s go with fall annuals. Regardless, it’s easy to get some color and bring back the excitement of fall.

¢ SHORT-TERM FIXES Mums, fall kale, pansies, sunflowers, black-eyed Susans, Swiss chard and more are starting to show up in the garden center. Great timing as my petunias are losing the battle and starting to look a little weary.

It’s easy to “flip” your pots for fall, and it will only take you an afternoon. Take some photos of your pot with you to the garden center to make the process even quicker. (I know that I can never remember how big my pots are!) Mums are huge, so they take up a big portion of my pots, but I love to sneak in some cabbage and blackeyed Susans. All of these plants will tolerate the cold weather and hang in there until I switch to my holiday greens.

If you wish to have mums in your garden, and want them to come back each year, plant them in the ground now versus waiting until November when they are done flowering. Fortunately, mums are very inexpensive so I just throw them away each year, as my color tastes are fickle from year to year.

¢ LONG-TERM FIXES I’ve noticed a lot of “tired” landscapes this year. It’s hard to say why, but I’m sure that life, in general, has a lot to do with it. Many maintenance headaches come from old plants that were improperly sited in the first place.

Ignoring them for a few seasons makes it even worse. (Raise your hand if you have some sort of overgrown shrub or evergreen taking over your dining room window.)

Even if your budget is limited, you can still do some fixing this time of year.

Most foundation plantings are easy to rip out and inexpensive to put back in. You also can do some of the work yourself to save on labor. If 34 | OCTOBER 2016 | KANE COUNTY MAGAZINE

Mold invasion Fighting the battle of bathroom ventilation

Mold likes moisture.

Every time someone takes a steaming, hot shower on a cold, fall morning, the bathroom fills with a fog of moist air, creating the perfect environment for mold to grow. Moisture in the air collects on the ceiling and walls and can be collected to form tiny drops of water that can penetrate bathroom walls, ceilings and even cracks and crevices around electrical outlets and molding. Damp wood, paperfaced wallboard, paint resins and paper-faced fiberglass insulation make the ideal food for dreaded mold.

One of the best ways to fight bathroom mold is to properly install a vent fan. The fan must be ducted to the outside of your home, and you should use a spray foam or caulk to seal leaks around the opening for the fan in the ceiling. It’s also important to cover the fan with attic insulation.

The bathroom fan’s job is to move the fog of moist air to the outside of your house before it condenses and penetrates materials that become ideal food for mold when wet. Today’s homes cannot pass building codes without a bathroom fan installed. It is referred to as “active ventilation.”

But just because a bathroom fan is installed, even properly, doesn’t mean it will do its job to prevent moisture from collecting on the ceiling and walls.

It can only do its job when you turn it on during bathing and showering. And it must be kept on until all the moist air has been moved outside.

If you notice that your bathroom fan is moving moist air into your attic, then you need to make a change.

Allowing moist air to blow into the attic only serves to encourage mold to grow in another places inside your home. Moist air in the attic will condense and collect on the wood rafters.

A properly-installed bathroom fan is the best way to fight bathroom mold.

Three tips for the fight against bathroom mold 1. Turn the bathroom fan on each time you enter the bathroom and flip the light switch on. If the fan is controlled by the same switch that operates to bathroom’s main light fixture, the fan will always be on when someone is bathing or showering, whether it is needed or not.

2. Install a fan that is controlled by a humidistat. This handy device measures the humidity level in the bathroom. When the humidity reaches a preset level, the humidistat will turn the bathroom fan on. It also will turn the fan off when the humidity level drops to the preset level.

3. If mold is already a problem, you need to make sure you have a properly installed bathroom fan that is moving moist air OUT of your home. Next, get rid of the mold! Check out the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s guide for mold cleanup by visiting www3.epa.gov.

In order to garner a positive first impression, homeowners can create great curb appeal by having a nicely manicured lawn and garden, but – when it comes to creating a cozy respite for you and your loved ones to enjoy – the exterior is only the beginning.

A home’s interior often is aimed at instilling personal peace, pleasure and relaxation.

When upgrades and improvements are made to a home, they are not only enjoyed by the homeowner, but they also can increase the value of the home.

Currently, there isn’t a particular trend on what improvements people are choosing to make on their homes, says Sue McDowell, owner of McDowell Remodeling in St. Charles, but “they’re remodeling again, which is great.”

“People have confidence again to invest money in their homes by doing some of the things they wanted to do but held off on when home values went down,” she says. “It’s really good to see people investing in their homes again.”

The problem some homeowners seem to have is that they don’t know how to implement their ideas or have so many ideas that they don’t know where to begin.

With so many options for remodels, from the kitchen and bathroom to the basement or a hobby room, it’s difficult to know where to start.

“Because of all of the different homes we see, we really are able to share a lot of ideas with our clients,” McDowell says. “When we meet with people who have talked to other companies, they tell us that we had ideas that no one else has, which is a compliment.”

On the hunt for festive fall brews

Fall is here, and seasonal brews have begun cropping up in bars and restaurants across Kane County.

Local establishments are celebrating the season with a variety of festive fall options, including everything from pumpkin-flavored ales to Oktoberfest special releases and darker lagers. These types of seasonal beverages continue to gain popularity with each passing year.

“As the drinking public becomes more educated and interested in nuanced flavors and are expanding their palates to try more adventurous beers, they’re catching on to the seasonal drinking trend, as well,” says Jeff Cagle, operating manager at Penrose Brewing Company.

The Geneva brewery is releasing two seasonal beers this fall. One is the Wet Hop IPA, which will be released this month.

“What makes the Wet Hop IPA special is that it uses fresh, whole cone hops that we put into our brew less than 24 hours

after the hops have been harvested,” says Cagle. “This wet-hopping with fresh hops produces a greener, fresher flavor of hop.”

The second is the Coffee Navette, a malty black ale mixed with coffee. Penrose works with a variety of different roasters from Intelligentsia, Dark Matter and FreshGround Roasting in Geneva.

“Our Coffee Navette is one of our more popular seasonal releases that we put out each year,” says Cagle. “This is a good beer for fall, as we are introducing bolder, more roasty flavors as the weather turns cooler.”

Gammon Coach House in Batavia also is serving up plenty of autumn options.

“It’s very important for us to have a lot of seasonal beers,” says owner Jon With.

“This is a perfect time of year for all the Oktoberfest-type beers.”

t’s not difficult to find a coffee shop these days, but not all coffee shops are made the same. For now, forget the chains and generic coffee roasters, because Kane County has plenty of mom-and-pop shops that are transforming the coffee scene and raising the bar for competition everywhere. ¢ ARCEDIUM COFFEEHOUSE 60 Indiana St. | St. Charles 630-444-0610 For Celeste Walker and her husband, Dennis, coffee has always been an essential part of their lives, so it seemed pretty natural for the couple to open a local shop of their own.

The duo is about to celebrate eight years of owning Arcedium Coffeehouse, and they just celebrated their fifth consecutive year of being named “best coffee house” in the Kane County Chronicle’s Best of the Fox contest.

“I’m truly sincere when I say it’s the most humbling experience each and every year,” Celeste Walker says. “For us, it’s just really our greatest compliment because it comes from the people who were here for every day – our customers.”

Arcedium works with a coffee importer out of New York that works with coffee growers around the world, and they roast everything at the shop daily. The Walkers have a focus on quality coffee and espresso, and some fan-favorites include the Cinnamon Crème Latte, Crème Brûlée Latte and Aztec Mocha.

“I think our espresso drinks are by far our most popular drinks of anything we sell,” Celeste Walker says. “Food was really an afterthought for us. Our passion and the whole purpose was coffee.”

That doesn’t mean they don’t take their food seriously, though. Walker notes that everything is made from scratch, and that they carve their own meat for sandwiches.

“For me, when the decision was made to do this, what was really important was to develop a place for the community to come together,” Walker says. “I felt then, and I still feel, it’s something lost in our society. I feel like we’ve accomplished that goal.”

with a pumpkin spice latte; and, of course, the homemade pumpkin spice latte.

“Our pastry chefs make a pumpkin spice mixture every morning that has real pumpkin in it,” Sommerfeld says. “No one else does a homemade one like this.”

Another local favorite is the gelato, which is all homemade. Graham’s 318 even offers a gelato affogato – gelato with an espresso shot.

“We have a lot of regulars that come in all the time, and a lot of them leave feeling better than when they came in the door,” Sommerfeld says.

“We really want to be a fence of the community and allow people to leave with a lasting experience.”

IN THE FALL, INDIANA ART COLONY OPENS PRIVATE STUDIOS TO THE PUBLIC

T

hrough the month of October, visitors to Brown County, Indiana, can get a glimpse behind the scenes of one of the most robust artistic communities in the country. The annual Back Roads of Brown County Studio Tour gives the public a glimpse into the studios and workshops of artists throughout the county. This year marks the 15th anniversary of the southern Indiana event.

The free, self-guided tour begins Oct. 1 and runs through Oct. 31. The tour showcases 14 studios and 22 different artists. These artists represent a wide range of style and practice a variety of media, including pottery, painting, jewelry, sculpture, photography, metalwork and more.

The area has longbeen a thriving community for artists of all kinds.

“This is a pretty unique spot,” says Chris Gustin, a local weaver and one of the original organizers of the tour. “It was founded as an artists’ colony in 1908, and it has continued to be a hotbed of artistic creativity.”

During the tour, visitors will get a chance to interact with artists and observe them at work.

They also may end up getting a more handson experience. Gustin’s weaving studio – a workshop she and her husband built near their home – contains more than three tons of yarn.

She allows guests to try their hand at weaving on one of her 16 looms.

The studio tour allows people from around the country to not only discover Brown County, but its artists and the work they create, too.

“It brings a new awareness to the type of art that is being created in this area,” says Gustin, adding that the tour can bring anywhere from 400 to 500 visitors to her studio each year.

This type of exposure is invaluable to many of the Brown County artists. Many artisans have artwork and products for sale throughout the month.

“The tour will bring in people that would not normally make the trip out here,” says Gustin. “It has definitely improved my business in the past 10 years.”

For many artists, the tour is a good way to supplement or replace traveling to art shows. These shows typically charge for a booth and only provide limited space. The Back Roads Tour allows artists to showcase a wider range of their work. This is especially helpful for Gustin, who has hundreds of rugs and other woven pieces in her space.

Participants on the tour also will get to experience another one of Brown County’s greatest assets: natural beauty. The route takes visitors through the area’s rolling hills at the peak of autumn splendor. A detailed map guides the way and most studios are located

about 10 minutes apart.

One point of interest is the T.C. Steele State Historic Site. As the first artist to settle in Brown County, Steele was an impressionist painter well-known for his Indiana landscapes. He is widely considered to be the most prominent member of Indiana’s Hoosier Group painters. His home and studio are open to the public and decorated with many of his original works.

Knowing what life is like for man’s best friend is the focus of the Center’s new “Canine Intuitions� program, which will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16.

Whether you’re a first-time dog owner or have lived with dogs your entire life, this program offers a little something for everyone. The course is full of important tips about nutrition, training, behavior, grooming and socialization. If you are a dog-owner, your “best friend� must stay at home, but a visiting canine will be in attendance to help with the class.

The park district also is offering another animal-related activity from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Sunday, Nov. 6, when children (and parents, too) will have the opportunity to read to their favorite book to some Hickory Knolls animals, such as Peter rabbit, Ollie the lizard and more. Also joining in the event will be therapy dogs from around the area.

A reading expert from the St. Charles Public Library will get the event rolling with a short group story time.

Films for your scary movie marathon

Autumn is upon us, and you know what that entails: cooler weather, fall colors, football, the Major League Baseball playoffs, Halloween and pumpkinflavored everything. But there is one other notable fall feature to enjoy – horror films.

While they can be viewed and feared any time of year, they tend to take on a spookier, more immersive, and entertaining atmosphere during October.

So, which scary movies are some of the best? Turn out the lights, crank up the volume and let us make some suggestions.

“HALLOWEEN” (1978). The John Carpenter original is the perfect horror film and has yet to be outdone. (And don’t forget to watch “Halloween II” right after!)

“DRACULA” (1931). What’s Halloween without classic monsters?

Bela Lugosi as the famous count is the greatest of them all.

“THE SHINING” (1980). The isolated, atmospheric classic from Stanley Kubrick. Jack Nicholson’s completely loony performance is one of the best you’ll ever see.

Frozen in fear Santa’s Village goes dark for a grown-up Halloween, with help from horror experts at Fables Studios

Imagine, if you dare, your favorite childhood memories cast into the shadows by demons and ghouls of every nightmarish sort. That’s just what you’ll get as Fables Fright Nights arrives, haunting the once cheerful grounds of Santa’s Village AZoosment Park in East Dundee.

Gleeful laughter and innocent fun give way to shrieks of horror and dreadful sights. White with fear, you’ll cower as you attempt to traverse what once was the most nostalgic of family destinations, home to beloved and jolly old elves, and now a haven for unnamable terrors.

When visitors arrive at the park, not one haunted house or single building awaits, but an entire compound filled with one fright after another, from the sinister Krampus, the ancient Christmas demon who punishes the naughty… to the scariest of scarecrows, who “come alive” under the blood moon to offer up a sacrifice.

It’s all the seasonal creation of a band of mischief makers led by Peter Tomeczko, owner of Fables Studios.

“Ever since I was a child, my father and I used to decorate the house for Halloween,” Tomeczko says. “We went every year to see a local animatronic show, put on by a neighbor in our town. At age 13, I attended a behind the scenes tour of a local haunt and found out they were OUT & ABOUT

Although a resuscitated version of Oktoberfest in Batavia does not quite internalize this quirk, the riverside town is not afraid to bow to the time-honored, early autumn tradition of savoring beer, sausage and yodeling. Expect all that and more at the Batavia MainStreet festival, set for Friday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 8, in the city’s downtown.

The first day of the festival will include a Sam Adams beer stein hoisting contest and a yodeling contest, which will take place behind the musical backdrop of the Chicago-based Johnny Wagner band, whose quintet is no stranger to entertaining large crowds with German music – or donning lederhosen.

Speaking of lederhosen, those who participate in the German spelling bee might even be asked to spell the word for “leather shorts with H-shaped suspenders.” The spelling bee is set for 5 p.m. Oct. 8, a few hours after

Stein-holding and yodeling contests and sporadic renditions of another Oktoberfest staple, “The Chicken Dance,” will take place both days.

Event sponsor Samuel Adams will help keep tabs on the stein hoisting competition, whose winner might be wise to train his or her wrists, because Batavia Oktoberfest is one of 10 nationwide Sam Adams-sponsored feeder festivals for the Caesars Palace Oktoberfest in Las Vegas. The Batavia winner will advance to the national championships at Caesars Palace, where another victory would earn him or her a trip for two to the 2017 Oktoberfest in Munich.

Yes, that means it’s possible for an expert stein handler to be in Batavia one October and Bavaria, Germany the next.

Still, Batavia Oktoberfest organizers don’t anticipate much daydreaming from their own festivalgoers, as they will be surrounded by beer, bratwurst, schnitzel, horns and German dancing.

A NIGHT TO PAWS GALA

By Anderson Animal Shelter Featured Sponsor DePaw University Canine Campus For over thirty years Anderson Animal Shelter’s Gala Dinner and Auction has been a tradition in the Fox Valley. The gala is the shelter’s premier fundraiser and each year celebrates the work that this nonprofit organization accomplishes in our community.

A Night to Paws generates thousands of dollars that directly impacts the lives and futures of the animals in their care. The success of the shelter and this event is directly related to the support received from individuals who attend as well as corporate supporters and sponsors.

Event organizers are especially excited about this year as the shelter is celebrating 50 years of service.

In addition to the anniversary milestone, the shelter has seen significant change and growth, which makes this an exciting time for the organization and everyone involved.

“We are extremely proud of our accomplishments,” said Beth Drake, Executive Director. “A tremendous amount of hard work, dedication and passion has made our changes and forward progress possible.”

Located on over 5 acres in South Elgin, Anderson Animal Shelter is a publicly supported organization and offers a number of programs and services to the community.“We are now one of the most progressive animal welfare organizations in the area and are positioned for even more growth.”

The shelter has seen adoptions increase significantly over the past few years, along with humane education programs and community outreach events. You can find Anderson Animal Shelter almost every weekend out in the community showcasing adoptable pets or helping to spread the word of its mission. Events such as the gala

are important fundraisers for the organization.

The evening promises to be elegant and enjoyable while raising much needed funds to support the shelter’s mission. An ensemble of the well-recognized chamber choir The St. Charles Singers will present a mix of duets, quartets, solos and ensemble singing as a part of the evening’s entertainment. Jeffrey Hunt founded the choir in 1984 and serves as music director. The St. Charles Singers perform three to four concert series per year at their home venue, Baker Church, St. Charles.

They also perform in and around Chicago and internationally.

You don’t want to miss out on this special event, for an equally special cause. Tickets are now on sale to the public.
